After WHO row, US is Trump unveils plan to probing China lab link reopen states in phases
As Covid-19 continues to spread across the US, President Donald Trump has given governors guidance on reopening state economies in the coming months.
Donald Trump with China’s Xi Jinping
U S P r e s i d e nt D o n a l d Tr u mp’s administration is urging an investigation into the origins of the coronavirus pandemic, saying that the US doesn’t rule out that it came from a laboratory researching bats in Wuhan. China’s foreign ministry hit back saying the WHO has said there is no evidence that the coronavirus was made in a lab. The fresh row erupted a day after Trump announced a hold on US funding for the
WHO as it had failed in its duties, after which China said it would make up for the lack of American financing to the global health body. Trump, asked about the laboratory theory on Wednesday, said that “more and more, we’re hearing the story” and that the US was “doing a very thorough investigation”. Trump has repeatedly blamed China and the WHO. Beijing has said that the virus was likely transmitted to humans late last year at a Wuhan “wet market” that butchered exotic animals .
HiIndia Newsdesk The new US Space Force is building an arsenal of as many as 48 groundbased weapons over the next seven years designed to temporarily jam Russian or Chinese communications satellite signals in the opening hours of a conflict. The first system, made by L3Harris Technologies Inc., was declared operational last month after years of development, and the Space Force has taken delivery of 16 of them. The service is also developing a new system, known as Meadowland, that’s lighter-weight, capable of adding updated software and able to jam more frequencies.
Since its formation last year as the sixth branch of the US military, attention has focused on the Space Force’s defensive duty in safeguarding US satellites and on organizational questions about its budget and its relationship with the Air Force. Less has been disclosed about its offensive role, which centers on Meadowland. “Nothing else we’re doing in Space Force is offensive in nature, where we are actually going after an adversary,” said Lieutenant Colonel Stephen Brogan, a unit head in the combat systems branch of the Air Force Space and Missile Systems Center, which is managing development and procurement.

HiIndia Newsdesk President Trump laid out a three-phase process for governors to lead their states out of economic lockdown even as his scientific advisers described a “new normal” in which the public would have to remain constantly vigilant for outbreaks of the novel coronavirus. The guidance leaves decisions in the hands of governors but lays out a series of checkpoints, starting with a decrease in confirmed COVID-19 cases over a 14-day period, before restrictions are lifted.“We’re starting our life again,” said
Trump during his Thursday evening coronavirus press briefing. “We’re starting to rejuvenate of our economy again in a safe and structured and very responsible fashion.” The president has made clear at times his impatience with public health officials who have cautioned against moving too fast. There was fresh evidence of the economic cost of closing nonessential businesses, with new jobs figures showing that an additional 20 million people filed for unemployment benefits.

The United States has provided nearly USD 5.9 million in health assistance to India to slow the spread of COVID-19, the State Department said Thursday. The amount is being used to help India hinder the spread of the disease
by providing care for the affected, disseminating essential public health messages to communities and strengthen case-finding and surveillance, the State Department said. The assistance is also being used to mobilize innovative financing mechanisms for emergency preparedness and response to this pandemic. “This builds on a foundation of nearly USD2.8 billion in total assistance, which includes more than USD1.4 billion in health assistance, the United States has provided to India over the last 20 years,” it said in a update of the US efforts in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

China’s virus-hit economy shrinks for first time in decades
China’s economy shrank for the first time in decades in the first quarter of the year, as the virus forced factories and businesses to close.
HiIndia Newsdesk The world’s second biggest economy contracted 6.8% according to official data released on Friday. The financial toll the coronavirus is having on the Chinese economy will be a huge concern to other countries. China is an economic powerhouse as a major consumer and producer of goods and services. This is the first time China has seen its economy shrink in the first three months of the year since it started recording quarterly figures in 1992. “The GDP contraction in January-
UK to remain locked down for at least 3 more weeks
HiIndia Newsdesk As the death toll from Covid-19 in the UK rose to 13,729 on Thursday, the British government extended the lockdown by at least three more weeks in the hope that social distancing and other restrictions will continue to have impact. Also, the number of coronavirus cases in the UK rose to 103,093, while 861 new fatalities were reported. Foreign secretar y Dominic Raab announced the extension amid signs that the curbs are having some effect. Ministers and experts said lifting the lockdown or a return to normalcy would not be feasible until the mass availability of a vaccine for the virus.
March will translate into permanent income losses, reflected in bankruptcies across small companies and job losses,” said Yue Su at the Economist Intelligence Unit.Last year, China saw healthy economic growth of 6.4% in the first quarter, a period when it was locked in a trade war with the US. China has seen average economic growth of around 9% a year, although experts have regularly questioned the accuracy of its economic data. Its economy had ground to a halt during the first three months of the year as it introduced large-scale shutdowns and quarantines to prevent the virus spread in late January.

Japan declares nationwide state of emergency
A nationwide state of emergency has been declared in Japan due to the country’s worsening coronavirus outbreak.
HiIndia Newsdesk The move allows regional governments to urge people to stay inside, but without punitive measures or legal force. The state of emergency will remain in force until 6 May. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe had previously declared a month-long state of emergency in seven regions. Speaking at a special meeting of medical experts, Mr Abe said: “Areas where a state of emergency should be carried out will be expanded from the seven prefectures to all prefectures.”
Africans in China: We face coronavirus discrimination
Africans in Guangzhou have complained that they have been forced from their accommodation
In early April, online rumours began to circulate that parts of the city where Africans live and trade were under lockdown after two Nigerians who had tested positive for the virus escaped. Chinese media reported that a Nigerian
patient had attacked a Chinese nurse. The health commission began widespread testing of African nationals. The local authority says it has tested every African national in the city for the coronavirus. It found that 111 of the more than 4,500 Africans in Guangzhou tested positive. “They just came with their ambulance and medical team and took us. All they said was that it was Chinese law and an order from the government,” said Hao*, a businessman from Ivory Coast. By some estimates there were more than 200,000 dwelling in the city. Some settled for the long term. Many overstayed their visas.
As the number of infections in Japan has increased, criticism of Mr Abe’s response has grown louder. One poll shows 75% of people think the prime minister took too long to declare a state of emergency in Tokyo. After a recent spike in cases in the capital Tokyo, experts warned that the city’s emergency medical facilities could collapse under the pressure. Officials in Tokyo have also urged people to work from home. apan’s two emergency medical associations also issued a joint statement warning that they were “already sensing the collapse of the emergency medical system”.

Brazil’s Bolsonaro fires health Two dozen Rohingya died on drifting minister after virus dispute boat; 382 rescued: Bangladesh
Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro speaks to journalists about the new coronavirus at Planalto presidential palace in Brasilia, Brazil.
HiIndia Newsdesk Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro fired his health minister on Thursday after a
series of disagreements over government efforts to contain the new coronavirus. “I just heard from the President Jair Bolsonaro the news of my dismissal from the health ministry,” Luiz Henrique Mandetta posted on his verified Twitter profile, adding that he wished success to his replacement, who is yet to be named officially. Mandetta, a doctor, garnered popular support for his pandemic response that included promotion of broad isolation measures enacted by state governors. Bolsonaro, for his part, repeatedly characterized the virus as a “little flu,” said shutting down the economy would cause more damage than confining only high-risk Brazilians, and touted the yet-unproven efficacy of an antimalarial drug.
In this handout photo released by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency shows a wooden boat carrying suspected Rohingya migrants detained in Malaysian territorial waters off the island of Langkawi, Malaysia.
HiIndia Newsdesk At least two dozen ethnic Rohingya died on a ship that was drifting for weeks after failing to reach Malaysia, Bangladesh coastguard officials said on Thursday, after 382 starving survivors
were rescued. A human rights group said it believed more boats carrying Rohingya, a Muslim minority group from Myanmar, were adrift at sea, with coronavirus lockdowns in Malaysia and Thailand making it harder for them to find refuge. The Bangladesh coastguard said the ship was brought to shore late on Wednesday.” They were at sea for about two months and were starving,” one of the coastguard officials told Reuters in a message. The 382 survivors on board would be sent to Myanmar, the official said. Video footage showed a crowd of mostly women and children, some stick-thin and unable to stand, being helped to shore.

I just can’t see it happening,” Border said.

Without these numbers, how can health care systems and workers prepare for what is needed?” asked study researchers Dr Arni S.R. Srinivasa Rao from Augusta University in the US. Better numbers also are critical to better protecting the population and overall pandemic preparedness, the researchers said in the paper published in the journal Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology.

OUT OF THE BOX Experts suggest excessive drinking amid lockdown can weaken immune system
P
lanning to welcome the lockdown extension orders with a drink in your hand? Well, better to drop the idea as the recent study reveals that excessive drinking while staying indoors can have a negative impact on your immune system. “People drink because it mellows them,” Fox News quoted Dr Shannon Sovndal, an ER doctor and author of ‘Fragile’ as saying. “Well, alcohol has a similar effect on the immune system, making it slow and lethargic,” he added. As he explained the effect of alcohol consumption has in our body, he added that having one drink a day, light drinking, will likely only have a minimal effect. On the other hand, he added that heavier drinking can “dampen” all of your body’s systems, including the immune
system. A report by Fox News earlier said that the immune system may see a brief boost about 20 minutes after “peak intoxication.” However, 2 to 5 hours after getting drunk, that boost fades and the immune system significantly slows down.Researchers have also noticed that a reduction in the white blood cells, which are important to immunity, along with an increase in proteins that reduce the immune system’s effectiveness. Excessive drinking makes it harder for the body to resist disease, according to The Mayo Clinic’s findings. The Clinic also suggests that drinking heavily can have high chances to be prone to developing pneumonia, which is now a common illness developed among the people who suffer from severe symptoms due to COVID-19.
More screen time has hardly any impact on social skills among new generation: Study
C
ontrary to speculations, a recent study has suggested that more screen time has little impact on young people today, and are just as socially skilled as those from older generations. Led by the team from Ohio State University, the researchers compared teacher and parent evaluations of children who started kindergarten in 1998 -- six years before Facebook launched -- with those who began school in 2010 when the first iPad debuted. Results published in the American Journal of Sociology showed both groups of kids were rated similarly on interpersonal skills such as the ability to form and maintain friendships and get along with people who are different. They were also rated similarly on self-control, such as the ability to regulate their temper. In other words, the kids are still all right, said Douglas Downey, lead author of the study and professor of sociology at The Ohio State University. “In virtually every comparison we made, either social skills stayed the same or actually went up modestly for the children born later,” Downey said. “There’s very little evidence that screen exposure was problematic for the growth of social skills.” Downey conducted the study with Benjamin Gibbs, associate professor of sociology at Brigham
Young University. The idea for the study came several years ago when Downey had an argument at a pizza restaurant with his son, Nick, about whether social skills had declined among the new generation of youth. The ECLS follows children from kindergarten to fifth grade. The researchers compared data on the ECLS-K cohort that included children who began kindergarten in 1998 (19,150 students) with the cohort that began kindergarten in 2010 (13,400 students). Children were assessed by teachers six times between the start of kindergarten and the end of fifth grade. They were assessed by parents at the beginning and end of kindergarten and the end of first grade. Downey and Gibbs focused mostly on the teacher evaluations, because they followed children all the way to fifth grade, although the results from parents were comparable. Results showed that from the teachers’ perspective, children’s social skills did not decline between the 1998 and 2010 groups. And similar patterns persisted as the children progressed to fifth grade. In fact, teachers’ evaluations of children’s interpersonal skills and self-control tended to be slightly higher for those in the 2010 cohort than those in the 1998 group, Downey said.

Choosing stethoscope over the crown
INDIAN-ORIGIN MISS ENGLAND REMOVES CROWN, CHOOSES STETHOSCOPE TO FIGHT COVID
C
hoosing stethoscope over the crown, Miss England 2019, Bhasha Mukherjee, has returned to work as a doctor as the world battles with coronavirus pandemic. According to CNN, she was a junior doctor with a specialisation in respiratory medicine, before being crowned as Miss England in August last year. The beauty queen, who has her roots in India’s Kolkata city, had taken a career break from the medical field. She had paused her medical career for some humanitarian work that she was offered by several charities and was on a tour to different countries including India. “I was invited to Africa, to Turkey, then to India, Pakistan and several other Asian countries to be an ambassador for various charity work,” CNN quoted her as saying. She had been in India at the beginning of March for four weeks.
During her stay as an ambassador of the Coventry Mercia Lions Club, the 24-year-old had visited several schools and had donated stationery and other items to the needy. Mukherjee then returned back UK as the situation worsened there with the coronavirus spreading at a fast rate. She then contacted the hospital and asked them that she wanted to rejoin. According to CNN, the Miss England beauty pageant winner said that she felt wrong to be wearing the crown while people around the world were dying from the virus. “When you are doing all this humanitarian work abroad, you’re still expected to put the crown on, get ready... look pretty. I wanted to come back home. I wanted to come and go straight to work,” CNN quoted her as saying. “I felt a sense of this is what I’d got this degree for and what better time to be part of this particular sector than now. It was incredible the way the whole world was celebrating all key workers, and I wanted to be one of those, and I knew I could help,” she added. As the beauty queen has a recent travel history, she is currently in self-isolation and will return to work once her quarantine period is over. She was crowned as Miss England 2019 in August last year. According to World Health Organisation, 13,53,361people have been affected by coronavirus and over 80,000 people have lost their lives to it. (ANI)

And if you have to employ a shopping cart, then use the sanitizer to wipe the handle. 4. Don’t spend too much time in the supermarket or grocery shop. 5. If you have flu-like symptoms, then avoid going out. 6. Don’t let the elderly in your family go out for grocery shopping as they are at high risk.

Make working out at home easier and more effective Working out at home is not as easy as it sounds. But these golden rules will help you make the most of it and be ready to hit the gym when the time comes.
1
. Follow a schedule to stay motivated Yes, it is very hard but also very important to stay motivated, especially when it comes to exercise. The best thing you can do is stick to your earlier routine. Stick to the time that you used to work out at and keep at it. Following a schedule is very important, so sleep on time and wake up on time.
4
. Don’t forget your pre-workout meal Yes, that’s important too! So what if you are working out at home… you are still working out right? Therefore, it is important to not skip your pre-workout snack. A few almonds, an apple, water, or a banana and you are good to go.
5
2
. Use a yoga mat to cushion your back Even if you don’t have a back problem, we recommend you to do your pilates or core exercises on a floor mat. You can also make use of a carpet or a folded bed sheet to cushion your back. This is important if you want to avoid back issues.
3
. Don’t stick to the basics and try new things out. Working out at home can be very boring. Which is why, you need to keep trying new things like Zumba, Pilates, and so on. And now that there are a whole lot of tutorials available on Google and social media platforms-and live sessions on social media are happening left, right, and centre-it’s easier than ever before.
. Do your stretches and cardio right Don’t mess with your warm-up and cardio routine. Yes, we understand that you don’t have access to a treadmill or a cross trainer, but you can always try other alternatives like burpees, onthe-spot running, jumping jacks, and skipping. . Don’t skip that sports bra and tights There is a reason why you wear active wear while you work out. So, even if you are doing it at home, it is very important for you to dress properly otherwise chaffing is going to bite you in the ass and thighs!

Soon enough, it started looking like a concept I would like to develop. It’s a comedy, my favourite genre,” Richa said in a statement. “The premise is hilarious. Jacqueline Fernandez on her depression: Lived on my own, have learned to deal with issues “I think those (dull) days happen all the time. It is also because we are in an industry where every day there is a speculation or rumours, and then there is social media. You have access to so much information on what people think about you, say about you, it is on public platform.” She added, “I don’t verbalise it but sometimes just having people around is nice. I might not to them about my problems, I rarely do except with my therapist. But at the same time, just having people around you forget about these problems. It is good and important to have people around.”

Zoom in on the problem Can Huawei’s three new flagship phones lure Android users?
Too popular too soon, the free app became riskier to use
I
n the wake of the lockdown, Zoom, a video communication service, has had a meteoric rise in popularity. So much so that it is on its way to becoming the generic term for video conferencing. Apple’s App Store has ranked it Number 1 among all free apps. Just as employees started holding meetings from home and school and college lectures went online using Zoom, reports appeared of huge security breaches in the service. Important conferences were “Zoombombed” with racial slurs and pornographic images.
Zoom was also accused of leaking data, including LinkedIn profiles as well as encryption keys to Facebook and Instagram. Recorded videos of confidential meetings turned up online. Apparently, video calls made on the app were not end-to-end encrypted as claimed. All this led to companies such as Elon Musk’s SpaceX dropping Zoom like a hot cake. Nasa, one of SpaceX’s biggest customers, also prohibited its employees from using Zoom. The biggest users of Zoom, the school districts in New York City and Nevada’s Clark County, have also banned or disabled Zoom.
H
ardly any gadget launches are taking place now due to the coronavirus pandemic. But Huawei has gone ahead with the introduction of three new flagship smartphones — the Huawei P40, Huawei P40 Pro and P40 Pro+. And frankly, they are very interesting. Not only because of the spec sheet but how the company is trying to chalk out a path away from Google. The Chinese company’s 2019 device P30 Pro was easily one of the best smartphones in the market. The new trio makes no compromises when it comes to hardware. The wait-and-watch game involves whether the world is ready to embrace apps that are Android alternatives. Soon after US President Donald Trump banned the company from doing business with his country, Google announced it would comply, meaning it would end access to the full version of Android and Google Mobile Services to Huawei.
Gadget watch A tab that doubles as a car stereo
Samsung Galaxy Z Flip Samsung bucked the trend of brands pushing out slab-like devices in 2019 with the foldable Galaxy Fold and, in 2020, quite literally flips the concept with the Galaxy Z Flip. While it is undeniably premium priced, the Z Flip feels like a step in the right direction for foldables.
Sheer flaunt value
Gone is the intimidating and somewhat bulky size of the Fold — the Flip when folded becomes this small, somewhat thick but altogether fun form factor that slips easily into any pocket. It opens up into a bright 6.7-inch OLED panel and stays open at any angle all the way back, which makes for fun applications like hands-free video calls or pictures, or simultaneously using two apps split across the top and bottom halves. In use, it’s much like any Samsung flagship from last year — a Snapdragon 855+ chip, 8GB of memory and 256GB of fast UDS 3.0 storage takes care of anything you throw at it, though not using the latest Snapdragon 865 does mildly take the sheen off a bit — really, what you’re paying a premium for is the experience and exclusivity that comes with a foldable. The wide/ultra-wide 12MP shooters take good images for the most part but are outclassed by the latest S20 series. The 3,300mAh battery supports 15W fast charge and wireless charging/reverse wireless charging. Of course, likely the biggest reason you’re considering this — sheer flaunt value.
T
he hunt for a new audio system for my 14-year-old car had me flummoxed. I had no idea of the number of decisions one needs to take — whether one simply wants to play music or also other media, if one wants really powerful bass and so on, not forgetting the system’s compatibility with the car. Finally, I settled for Pioneer India’s combo set of SPH-T20BT and SDA-835TAB. The latter is a detachable receiver-cum-tablet. The 8-inch touchscreen tab can be operated irrespective of whether you are in the front or back seat. The tab is compatible with music files and smartphones. So you can connect your phone, even iPhone, with built-in Bluetooth or connect your pendrive to the USB port and will have a world of infotainment in your hands. Two tweeters — tiny speakers, about the size of a door knob — are mounted on the dashboard at the corners. Two more speakers are mounted on the front doors but there are none at the back. That does not, however, impair the listening experience. Connect your Bluetooth with the tab and you’re set to take calls from the tab even as the music plays on. The touch interface allows a smooth transition from navigation to music to the phone. The only thing I had a problem with is the fact that the small mic attached to the right of the windscreen, above the driver’s seat. This means if you are not driving — and I don’t — you cannot take your calls on the system. The first evening after the music system was installed, I unmindfully stepped out of the car and towards my house with the tab in my hands. The gentleman at the steering wheel was none too pleased but it was the melting of his frown into a smile that made my day. The FM/AM radio continued uninterrupted and he found that he could turn the volume to full blast (something I do not allow) with the physical volume buttons on the tablet mount cradle.

Tips to prevent eye irritation while working on YOUR LAPTOP
Do not use your laptop in a dark room with only the light of the screen or it may add to the strain on the eyes. tips to take care of your eyes while working from home, suggested by Dr Sethi: 1. Take a break every 15-20 mins or a maximum of one hour, from the screen. This involves opening and closing your eyes consciously and looking away from the screen for about 15-20 seconds. Try and focus your vision on some distant object. 2. Taking a break from the laptop screen does not mean you can spend the time on your phone or watch television or read a book. The idea is to give some rest to your eyes. So you can utilise the time by listening
to some music or talking to somebody. 3. This is the season of allergies, said Dr Sethi. So, in case you are facing some irritation, itching, watering or redness in the eye, it is advised that you contact a doctor who can prescribe some anti-allergic drop. With doctors now providing consultation over the phone or video calling, seeking medical advise should not be difficult. In case of just redness of the eye, which is a symptom of eye strain, you can apply lubricating eye drops available at the pharmacy. But do not use any kind of eye drops without consulting the doctor.
Time Out becomes ‘Time In’: Magazine rebrands itself
4. If you wear glasses, keep them clean. Avoid touching your eyes too much as it a potential portal of entry for coronavirus, said the doctor. 5. Exercise for some amount of time daily. This will improve circulation in the body and the eye, keeping them healthy. 6. Do not lie down while using your laptop or reading a book. Do not work on your laptop in a dark room with only the light of the screen or it may add to the strain on the eyes. When you are working, sit at the table in an upright position to avoid back pain.

BAPS Hindu Mandirs Across North America Lit Blue to Honor First Responders, Healthcare Heroes BAPS NEWS RELEASE NEW YORK,NY-As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to evolve, on the frontlines of this pandemic stand a group of individuals whose heroism was not fully appreciated before this crisis – the first responders. Doctors, nurses, paramedics, public safety officers and others risk their lives on a daily basis to ensure the well-being of the public at large. BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS), a worldwide Hindu organization, and the caretakers of six traditional stone mandirs (Hindu place of worship) in North America located in the greater metropolitan areas of Atlanta, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, and Toronto as well as Robbinsville, New Jersey, has decided to honor these brave individuals who now risk their health to stem the impact of COVID-19, according to a press release. Starting on Mar. 29, 2020, BAPS has been lighting these landmarks in blue as a gesture of gratitude to those men and women working tirelessly in healthcare and public safety. In addition to lighting the mandirs blue, BAPS Charities has also donated over 18,000 N95 respiratory masks during the critical early days of the pandemic to some of the hardest hit hospital systems in New York, New Jersey, and Canada. During these challenging times, the organization is hosting weekly webcasts for each age group in order to provide a sense of spiritual continuity. In related news, AP adds from Lucknow, India: Rukmani Sharma fears the virus that has turned the world upside down. But as a devout Hindu, she also fears for her soul. COVID-19 restrictions mean that the 71-year-old woman won’t be allowed to go to
temple to celebrate the birthday of the Hindu god Ram, and she says she’s “feeling guilty.” Hindus around the world were in the midst of a nine-day period called Chaitra Navaratri that began with what for many is considered the Hindu New Year to culminate with the festival of Ramanavami. Normally there is fasting, masses worshipping together, offerings in temples and festivals. But this year, celebrations and prayers are home-bound events and if there is group worship, it’s livestreamed because India is in a government-ordered 21-day lockdown. People are allowed to leave their homes only for essentials. Religious gatherings are explicitly banned.
Yogi Adityanath, chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, urged devotees to stay home. “No one should come to temple. This is a time of crisis and people should realize that prayers from home are as acceptable as prayers offered in temple,” Adityanath said. Hindus in the U.S. are also following social distancing protocols. Normally, Suhag Shukla would be scrubbing her Philadelphia home more intensely than usual, a sign of the renewal the holiday signifies. There would be guests and temple worship. But the temples are closed, and the bells that worshippers ring when they enter are silent. Her family’s prayers are confined to the altar in their home and worship and celebrations are
happening in cyberspace. “Normally, in the absence of a global pandemic India would have been seeing a lot of celebrations,” said Shukla, executive director of the Hindu American Foundation. That would entail special foods and sweets, prayers and rituals and gatherings of guests and family. “You would also be planning on joining your community at a local temple to celebrate as well.” With temples closed, Facebook and Zoom have become the way to connect for a religion where connection to all things is imperative. Shukla said it is important during a time of “unprecedented anxiety and uncertainty” that people have a way “to continue to commune with the Divine in kind of a sense of community.”

AAPI Launches Plasma Drive from Patients Cured of COVID-19 BY A STAFF WRITER NEW YORK, NY-Responding to the deadly coronavirus pandemic, among its other initiatives the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin, the largest Indian American medical association in the United States, has embarked on yet another mission. “While COVID-19 continues to disrupt life around the globe, AAPI is committed to helping its tens of thousands of members across the U.S. and others across the globe, as concerned physicians witnessing the growing COVID-19 pandemic and its effect on our society, healthcare system and economy, AAPI has launched the Plasma Drive from patients who have been cured of COVID-19 and are now with no corona-virus related symptoms for at least the past two weeks,” Dr. Suresh Reddy, president of AAPI, announced last week. Dr. Seema Arora, chairwoman of AAPI’s board of trustees, pointed to some of the other effective initiatives by AAPI that include: Offering regular tele-conference calls which have been attended by over 3,000 physicians
from across the United States; collaborations with other national international and government organizations such as Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, Indian Embassy in Washington, DC, National Council of Asian Indian Americans, GAPIO, BAPIO and Australian Indian Medical

Indian American Teen Co-Signs Letter to President Trump Seeking Swift Action on Anti-AAPI Hate Crimes BY A STAFF WRITER NEW YORK, NY-Since its official launch March 19, the Stop AAPI Hate reporting center has received over 1,100 reports of coronavirus discrimination from Asian Americans across the country, the Asian Pacific Policy and Planning Council announced April 3. In light of these escalations, on March 23, OCA Asian Pacific American Advocates, a national advocacy organization, wrote a letter to President Donald Trump urging him establish a task force via executive order in order to investigate and protect the civil rights of AAPIs in collaboration with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Justice. initiative that works alongside immunization coalitions and teens worldwide through various social media platforms. Having read stories of hundreds of teen victims of hate, protesting in frustration on social media platforms, especially on reddit.com, and
Twitter, Parsa reached out to OCA. Parsa stated in a press release that he is honored to “represent teen voices alongside other eminent organizations from various cultures and communities standing in solidarity against hate.” He is now working with Maddie Schumacher, OCA’s senior policy and advocacy associate, to send out the message that school officials and training also need to be a part of the solution. Parsa, the co-founder of teenopinions.org, a blog for teen voices, is using the platform to appeal to all communities to show solidarity and support in these difficult times, added the press release. “It is my appeal to everyone out there, irrespective of the communities we belong to: Speak up in forums you are part of, acknowledge the rampant issue, and show support. Our joint voices matter in healing those impacted, in drowning out the hate, and in making authorities take swift action,” said Parsa.

The four-county Sacramento region surpassed 1,000 confirmed COVID-19 cases on Monday. Health officials in those counties have reported a combined total of 36 deaths. The United States on Saturday overtook Italy for total reported fatalities linked to COVID-19, the disease caused by the highly

the leadership of Dr. Sudhakar Jonnalagadda, president-elect of AAPI; Dr. Sajani Shah, chairwoman-elect of AAPI’s board of directors; and Dr. Ami Baxi. The Task Force on Masks has been busy securing resources and identifying the hospitals and sending the supply of Masks/PPE directly to those in needed. Dr. Anupama Gotimukula, vice president of AAPI, said in a press release that the Red Cross is seeking people who are fully recovered from COVID-19 and may be able to donate plasma to help current patients with serious or immediately life threatening COVID-19 infections, or those judged by a healthcare provider to be at high risk of progression to severe or life-threatening disease. People who have fully recovered from COVID-19 have antibodies in their plasma that can attack the virus. The Red Cross has been asked by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to help identify prospective donors and manage the distribution of these products to hospitals treating patients in need.
SureStay Plus Hotel in Coralville Offering Free Stay During COVID-19 Emergency to Medical Professionals
BY A STAFF WRITER CORALVILLE, IA - A hotel in Coralville is giving doctors and nurses a place to stay during this COVID-19 emergency. The SureStay Plus Hotel off of 1st Avenue is letting them stay there for free. The offer is for any medical staff at the University of Iowa Hospitals, the Iowa City VA or Mercy Iowa City. With no events going on in the area, the hotel’s owner says she has plenty of room to house more people. They’re reserving 25 rooms per night for medical professionals. The hotel owner, Shradha Patel, who is also a nurse at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, says this gesture is the least she could do for her coworkers. “After a full day’s shift, you get tired, and right now, we want to keep our distance from our family, especially if you’re working with the hospital. So, we’re offering the free nights because we want to make sure that you’re safe and your family is safe,” Patel said. Medical workers wanting to take advantage of the offer just need to call and they’ll make that reservation. The hotel is offering one free night per person per week. And they are asking medical professionals to show their badge to verify who they are. The hotel is also offering up its shuttle service for free, taking workers between the hotel and hospitals. The shuttle runs daily from 5:30 a.m. until 7:30 p.m.

Oura Smart Rings Being Used by ER Docs to Better Predict COVID-19 Infections Founded by Indian American Entrpreneur’s
BY A STAFF WRITER SAN FRANCISO, CA- Some 2,000 emergency medical workers in San Francisco, California, are tracking their temperature and other vitals using the Indian Americanfounded Oura’s smart rings in an attempt to limit the spread of COVID-19. Harpreet Singh Rai-founded Oura and researchers from U.C. San Francisco hope to use that data to develop an algorithm that will predict the onset of COVID-19 and help contain the virus. Oura ring Workers at UCSF Medical Center and Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital are wearing the devices, and Oura has asked another 150,000 users to share their data, the report says. The rings aren’t exactly comprehensive trackers, but they do record body temperature, heart rate and other vitals. In the near term, they could alert medical workers if they have a fever or impending illness, not just COVID-19. By the fall, when some expect the coronavirus to resurge, UCSF and Oura hope to have an algorithm
The Oura Ring fits comfortably and stylishly on their finger
that will detect early symptoms of the virus, so that people can more effectively selfquarantine, according to the report. The ring could allow users to do the same. But it would require that they hand over medical data, which opens up data privacy concerns. There is some indication that this could work, though. Thanks to the Oura Ring, a Finnish business executive noticed that his temperature was higher than normal (about 100.4 Fahrenheit) and his heart and breathing rates were slightly increased.
While he reportedly felt normal otherwise, he had just been traveling in a coronavirus hotspot, so he was tested. The results were positive for COVID-19. Without the ring, he wrote on Facebook, he would not have noticed those changes, according to the report. Oura’s primary product, the Oura Ring, is the world’s first wellness ring. The Oura Ring tracks how your body responds to your lifestyle by analyzing your sleep, activity levels, daily rhythms and the physiological responses in your body, according to its website. Personalized for the user, the Oura Ring fits comfortably and stylishly on their finger and guides you towards better sleep, recovery and readiness to perform. Oura has users in over 60 countries, and several top universities, research organizations, sleep clinics, and companies are utilizing the data and insights Oura provides, the company says. Raised in Michigan by Punjabi parents, Rai has always felt drawn to international travel, and continued this trend by opening his company in Finland with additional locations in Iceland and San Francisco, it said.

Police saw two people doing nail care inside Royal Nail Spa, 3658 Center Road. Moterist Died After Blew Through Red Light in Brooklyn
Facebook Sued Indian American Sofware Architecdt Over Deceptive Ads Related to COVID-19 USCIS NEWS RELEASE SAN FRANCISCO,CA – Facebook April 9 filed a lawsuit against an Indian American software architect, Basant Gajjar, who allegedly violated the company’s policies by providing “cloaking software and services designed to circumvent automated ad review systems, and ultimately run deceptive ads on both Facebook and Instagram.” Gajjar operated under the name ‘LeadCloak’ and provided ad-cloaking software designed to push fake news and scams related to COVID-19, cryptocurrency, pharmaceuticals, diet pills and fake news pages. Some of cloaked websites also included images of celebrities. LeadCloak’s software also targeted a number of other technology companies including Google, Oath, WordPress, Shopify, and others, claimed Facebook in its lawsuit filed in federal court in California. “Cloaking is a malicious technique that impairs ad review systems by concealing the nature of the website linked to an ad,” Facebook said in a statement April 9. “When ads are cloaked, a company’s ad
review system may see a website showing an innocuous product such as a sweater, but a user will see a different website, promoting deceptive products and services which, in many cases, are not allowed,” explained Jessica Romero, director of Platform Enforcement and Litigation at Facebook. According to Gajjar’s brief profile available on the Internet, he is a digital marketer, SaaS expert, and founder and system architect at LeadCloak.com. Gajjar earned a bachelor’s degree in management information systems, general,
from California State University-Sacramento and a bachelor’s degree in computer science, also from California State UniversitySacramento. In addition to the lawsuit, Facebook said it has taken technical enforcement measures against Leadcloak and accounts that “we’ve determined have used their software, including disabling personal and ad accounts on Facebook and Instagram.” “This suit will also further our efforts to identify Leadcloak’s customers and take additional enforcement actions against them.”

Americans Must Fight History’s Oldest Virus as we Battle the Newest
BY A STAFF WRITER CHICAGO,IL- We only have to look at the heroic actions of our first-responders, health care professionals, charities, and community volunteers during the novel coronavirus pandemic to remind us that crises can bring out the best traits in our fellow Americans. Sadly, however, they can also bring out the worst. That is why we need to remain vigilant in the fight against hate, misinformation, and scapegoating. Law enforcement, civil rights organizations, and media outlets are reporting that there is an increase in hate crimes against Asian Americans - of all backgrounds - due to the completely mistaken and wrongheaded beliefs that they have culpability for the novel coronavirus pandemic. While it’s clear the Chinese government did not disclose key information about the initial outbreak of the coronavirus in Wuhan, we need to remember that it is the people of China who were the first victims of this policy. Now Asian Americans of all backgrounds are becoming the targets of harassment, insults, and violence. A man in Texas faces attempted murder charges for attacking an Asian-American family of four in a supermarket and stabbing three of them, including a two-year old and a six-year-old, claiming they were responsible for spreading the novel coronavirus. Websites are seeing an uptick in reports on hate incidents. The website Stop AAPI Hate has fielded over 1,100 hate incident reports in the past two weeks, including incidents in Illinois. Such scapegoating is particularly galling when one considers that 17% of doctors and 10% of nurses in our country – those putting their lives on the line to help protect the public from the virus– are Asian American. Asian Americans are not the only community experiencing hate and discrimination during this time. The African American, Latino, and Jewish communities are all seeing an
LA Leaders Stand with Asian American Pacific Islander Angelenos Against Racism Related to Coronavirus
uptick in being targets of misinformation and scapegoating. Additionally, the African American and Latino communities have been enduring a systemic, unacceptable disparity as it relates to their ability to access quality, affordable healthcare which is being exposed to a greater degree during this pandemic. Jews are all too familiar with disease-related scapegoating throughout history. During the Black Plague in Europe in the Middle Ages, Jewish people were scapegoated and killed mercilessly by fanatics across the continent. Over 600 entire Jewish communities were destroyed. Many killers claimed that Jews had poisoned wells to spread the plague, or that the plague was a Jewish plot to decimate Christian communities. Never mind that Jews died in horrific numbers during the plague as well. Sadly, modern anti-Semites are right now on the internet weaving similar misinformation theories blaming Jews for spreading the novel coronavirus. Indeed, the Simon Wiesenthal Center just turned over a list of some 45 channels on social media platforms like Telegram and Gab to US Attorney General Barr and Homeland Security
that promote lurid dangerous misinformation theories linking Jews to the pandemic and urging those suffering from the novel coronavirus to go to synagogues and mosques to spread the deadly virus. Working together with all people of good faith, we will hopefully soon be beneficiaries of a vaccine to stop the pandemic. But no one has yet come up with a cure for history’s oldest virus—hate. We must reject any and all efforts seeking to conflate justified anger at the Chinese communist government with anger towards Asian Americans. This is the height of hypocrisy, and insulting to the many Chinese Americans who fled to our country specifically to escape repression by the Chinese government. We should never blame immigrants from any country for the actions of a foreign government they have no control over. And we must reject the anti-Semites who are always lurking for times of crisis, anger, and uncertainty to spread their cancerous hatred of Jews. What can we do to fight hate in Illinois and protect our neighbors? The most important
3 Indian-Americans show recovery after transfused with plasma from recovered COVID19 patients BY A STAFF WRITER HOUSTON,TX- Three Indian Americans who were hospitalized in critical condition for Covid-19 in Texas are showing signs of recovery after being transfused with plasma from recovered Covid-19 patients, hospital sources have said, according to a PTI report. With a possible vaccine for Covid-19 not expected for months, physicians around the country are experimenting with this new treatment, though they are not sure if it is fully effective. The treatment, said the PTI report, injects antibody-rich plasma from people who have recovered from the novel coronavirus into people who have severe cases of Covid-19, the disease caused by the virus. Antibodies are proteins in the blood that fight specific bacteria and viruses. Five patients at Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center in Houston, Texas, have been treated with convalescent plasma, said Dr. Ashok Balasubramanyam, vice president of academic integration and associate dean of academic affairs at the Baylor College of Medicine. The school will also be conducting a clinical trial within a couple of weeks, the report added. The three patients, IT professional Rohan Bavadekar, Dr. Lavanga Veluswamy and Sushm Singh, are being treated at St. Luke’s Medical Center, and are showing positive signs of recovery; they are now waiting for more donors for new rounds of plasma transfusion. Last week, the FDA appointed the Mayo
action you can take is to report any acts of hatred to the proper authorities. If you see or experience an incident, call the Illinois Attorney General’s Office civil rights hotline at 877581-3692 or send an email to CivilRights@ ATG.State.IL.us. Please also submit reports to the national Stop AAPI Hate website. If you experience an anti-Semitic incident or come across anti-Semitic remarks on social media please email SWCMidwest@Wiesenthal.com. Also, continue to check in on your neighbors – regardless of their background. The COVID-19 pandemic has taught us that we are all in this together. Let’s be sure we don’t allow the bigots to exploit this crisis. By showing we care about each other, we can emerge from this pandemic stronger and more united than ever. Clinic to lead and coordinate the effort and evaluate the treatment’s effectiveness. Doctors have also been trying to treat Covid-19 patients with hydroxychloroquine, a drug typically used to treat malaria and lupus that has shown — in limited research — potential to speed recovery. But there are risks: Administered in high doses, the drug can cause heart arrhythmia and cardiac arrest, said Dr. Kristin Mondy, chief of the division of infectious disease at the University of Texas at Austin’s Dell Medical School. Hydroxychloroquine has bigger safety concerns
than convalescent plasma, Mondy noted. Meanwhile, India’s Ambassador to the U.S. Taranjit Singh Sandhu said in a tweet that days after the Indian government lifted a ban on the export of the anti-malaria drug hydroxychloroquine, a consignment of the drug arrived in the United States April 11. The consignment of hydroxychloroquine from India reached Newark airport, Sandhu said. “Supporting our partners in the fight against COVID-19.
