WHO should be ashamed of itself, it Trump threatens new tariffs on China as is like a PR agency for China: Trump US mulls retaliatory action over Covid-19

The Trump Administration has launched a probe into the role of the WHO on coronavirus, and has temporarily suspended the US’ financial assistance to it.

HiIndia Newsdesk US President Donald Trump Thursday said the World Health Organization should be “ashamed of ” itself, as he likened it to a public relations agency for China. The Trump Administration has launched a probe into the role of the WHO on coronavirus, and has

temporarily suspended the US’ financial assistance to it. “I think that the World Health Organization should be ashamed of themselves because they are like the public relations agency for China,” Trump told reporters in the East Room of the White House. The United States, he reiterated, pays the WHO almost USD500 million a year and China pays them USD38 million a year. “Whether it’s a lot more, it doesn’t matter. They shouldn’t be making excuses when people make horrible mistakes, especially mistakes that are causing hundreds of thousands of people around the world to die.” “I think the World Health Organization should be ashamed of themselves,? said the President.

More than 3.8 million laid-off workers applied for unemployment benefits last week as the US economy slid further into a crisis that is becoming the most devastating since the 1930s. Roughly 30.3 million people have now filed for jobless aid in the six weeks since the coronavirus outbreak began forcing millions of employers to close their doors and slash their workforces. hat is more people than live in the New York and Chicago metropolitan areas combined, and it’s by far the worst string of layoffs on record.

HiIndia Newsdesk U.S. President Donald Trump said on Thursday his hard-fought trade deal with China was now of secondary importance to the coronavirus pandemic and he threatened new tariffs on Beijing, as his administration crafted retaliatory measures over the outbreak.

Trump has touted his tough stance on China trade as a key differentiator from Democratic challengers in the presidential race.

US President Donald Trump did not mince words at a White House event on Thursday, when asked if he had seen evidence that gave him a “high degree of confidence” the virus came from the Wuhan Institute of Virology.

HiIndia Newsdesk U.S. President Donald Trump said on Thursday he was confident the coronavirus may have originated in a Chinese virology lab, but declined to describe the evidence, ratcheting up tensions with Beijing over the origins of the deadly outbreak. Trump did not mince words at a White

House event on Thursday, when asked if he had seen evidence that gave him a “high degree of confidence” the virus came from the Wuhan Institute of Virology. “Yes, yes I have,” he said, declining to give specifics. “I can’t tell you that. I’m not allowed to tell you that.” The Chinese state-backed Wuhan Institute of Virology has dismissed the allegations, and other U.S. officials have downplayed their likelihood. Most experts believe the virus originated in a market selling wildlife in Wuhan and jumped from animals to people. Tr u mp h a s s h ow n i n c r e a s i n g frustration with China in recent weeks over the pandemic, which has cost tens of thousands of lives in the United States alone, sparked an economic contraction and threatened his chances of re-election in November.

Trump’s sharpened rhetoric against China reflected his growing frustration with Beijing over the pandemic, which has cost tens of thousands of lives in the US alone, sparked an economic contraction and threatened his chances of re-election in November. Two U.S. officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said a range of options against China were under discussion, but cautioned that efforts were in the early stages. Recommendations have not yet reached the level of Trump’s top national security team or the president, one official told Reuters. “There is a discussion as to how hard to hit China and how to calibrate it properly,” one of the sources said as Washington walks a tightrope in its ties with Beijing while it imports PPE from there and is wary of harming a sensitive trade deal.

Trump’s ‘Operation Warp Speed’ aims to rush coronavirus vaccine

HiIndia Newsdesk The Trump administration is organizing a Manhattan Project-style effort to drastically cut the time needed to develop a coronavirus vaccine, with a goal of making enough doses for most Americans by year’s end. Called “Operation Warp Speed,” the program will pull together private pharmaceutical companies, government agencies and the military to try to cut the development time for a vaccine by as much as eight months, according to two people familiar with the matter. As part of the arrangement, taxpayers will shoulder much of the financial risk that vaccine candidates may fail, instead of drug companies.

Hundreds protest in Michigan as governor NYC subway system to halt seeks to extend emergency powers service every night for disinfection

Protesters congregate inside the Capitol Building after the “American Patriot Rally on Capitol Lawn,” protest

HiIndia Newsdesk Hundreds of protesters, some armed, gathered inside Michigan’s state Capitol in Lansing on Thursday objecting to Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s request to extend emergency powers to combat COVID-19, an appeal Republican lawmakers there have opposed. The protest appeared to be the largest in

the state since April 15, when supporters of President Donald Trump organized thousands of people for “Operation Gridlock,” jamming the streets of Lansing with their cars to call out what they said was the overreach of Whitmer’s strict stay-at-home order. The slow reopening of state economies around the country has taken on political overtones, as Republican politicians and individuals affiliated with Trump’s re-election promoted such protests in electoral swing states, such as Michigan. Many people at Thursday’s “American Patriot Rally”, including militia group members carrying firearms and people with pro-Trump signs, appeared to be ignoring state social-distancing guidelines as they clustered together within 6 feet of each other.

The massive cleaning undertaking is unprecedented in the New York subway system that daily ferries millions of riders across the city’s five boroughs and suburbs, going as far as Connecticut.

HiIndia Newsdesk In an unprecedented cleaning effort undertaken to control the spread of the deadly coronavirus, the New York City will shut down its 24-hour transit system — the largest in the US — from 1 am to 5 am daily to disinfect the subway

network, commuter trains and buses. New York, the epicentre of the coronavirus pandemic in the US, is gradually beginning to see decline in the number of daily hospitalisations, ICU admissions and fatalities. The state has more than 300,000 confirmed virus cases and over 23,600 people have died do far. “This is going to be one of the most aggressive, creative, challenging undertakings that the MTA (Metropolitan Transportation Authority) has done,” New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said at his daily press briefing on Thursday. “It’s going to require the MTA, the state, the city, the NYPD to all work together. It’s not that easy to stop train service. You have to close down stations, you have to make sure people don’t walk in, then you have to figure out how to clean all these trains and all these stations,” he said.

Guterres was responding to a question on whether any UN official had spoken to any North Korean official about the health and whereabouts of Kim. “We have no information about the situation of Kim Jong Un,” Guterres said during a virtual press briefing. There have been unconfirmed reports that Kim is not in good health. The rumours began after he missed the April 15 commemoration of the 108th birthday of his grandfather, North Korea founder Kim II Sung.

Sultan of Oman Haitham bin Tariq Al Said

HiIndia Newsdesk Venezuela on Thursday published a list of new price controls for 27 basic food items, fixing the price of eggs, some cuts of meat, and sausage above the monthly minimum wage President Nicolas Maduro set for the inflation-stricken country this week. The move marked the return of strict state economic controls, after more than a year of relaxation in the face of U.S. sanctions. Maduro’s socialist government is now seeking to calm inflation in the face of a collapse in crude prices, fuel shortages and a national lockdown to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

HiIndia Newsdesk Oman’s Finance Ministry has asked all state-owned companies to replace foreign workers with qualified local Omanis, as part of efforts to develop the national workforce, news agency Reuters reported. The circular issued by the Finance Ministry said that the replacement of expats with Omanis will need to be done in a “speedy and organised manner”, Times of Oman reported. The move is part of the government’s “Omanisation” policy, which strives to improve the number and quality of jobs available for Omani citizens. More than a third of the 4.6 million

population in Oman are expatriates, including a sizeable number of Indians. There are about 7.7 lakh Indians in Oman, of which about 6.55 lakh are workers and professionals. Thousands of Indians are working as doctors, engineers, chartered accountants, teachers, lecturers, nurses, and managers, among other professionals. The financial condition of Oman has strained on account of low oil prices and the coronavirus-induced economic slowdown. Two weeks ago, the country had urged private firms to ask non-Omani employees to “to leave permanently”, although it barred them from trying to lessen the economic burden of the Covid-19 crisis by firing Omanis.

Malaysia to reopen most businesses 5G signal now available ahead of schedule Monday on Mount Everest peak

A man collect supplies over barbed wire in the coronavirus locked down area of Selayang Baru, outside of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The lockdown was implemented to allow authorities to carry out screenings to help curb the spread of coronavirus.

HiIndia Newsdesk Malaysia will allow most economic sectors and business activities to reopen Monday, days before a two-month lockdown is scheduled to end. After coronavirus infections fell sharply in recent weeks, Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin says there is a need to revive the economy as the country has lost 63 billion ringgit (USD 14.7

billion) since a partial lockdown began March 18. It is due to end May 12, but Muhyiddin says most businesses, including restaurants, can open their doors beginning Monday with strict social distancing rules and health guidelines in effect. That includes health screening for staff and customers, and registering details of visitors. In a televised May Day speech, Muhyiddin said mass gatherings will still be banned, which means places such as schools, cinemas and worship houses will stay shut, and group sports are prohibited. Muhyiddin also said Muslims cannot return to their villages to celebrate the end of the fasting month, as interstate travel will remain banned. He urged Malaysians to embrace the new norm of life amid a cautious approach to ending the lockdown. Daily infections have dropped to double digits in the past two weeks, with Malaysia now reporting 6,002 infections and 102 deaths.

The building of 5G infrastructure is in tandem with the measuring of the height of the peak, which officially started on Thursday.

HiIndia Newsdesk Climbers to Mount Everest from the Chinese side can now enjoy high-speed 5G coverage after the world’s highestaltitude base station started operation in the remote Himalayan region of Tibet, the state media reported on Friday. Built at an altitude of 6,500 metres, the base station which became operational on Thursday, is located at the advance base camp of Mount Everest, the world’s highest peak, according to state-run telecom giant China Mobile.

The base station, along with another two that were previously built at altitudes of 5,300 metres and 5,800 metres respectively, realises the full coverage of 5G signal of Mount Everest on the north ridge as well as the summit, Xinhua news agency reported. Located at the China-Nepal border, Mount Everest has an altitude of more than 8,840 metres, with its north part located in Xigaze prefecture of Tibet Autonomous Region. 5G is the fifth generation of wireless communication technologies. In addition to faster speeds, 5G offers greater bandwidth and network capacity, paving the way for a future of driverless cars, more connected devices and high-definition connections for virtual meetings and telemedicine. The building of 5G infrastructure is in tandem with the measuring of the height of the peak, which officially started on Thursday.

He is not well.” It is learnt that he was in ICU for almost a week. Rishi Kapoor had returned to India in September last year after almost a yearlong cancer treatment in New York.

“Our dear Rishi Kapoor passed away peacefully at 8:45 am IST in hospital today after a two-year battle with leukemia. The doctors and medical staff at the hospital said he kept them entertained to the last. He remained jovial and determined to live to the fullest right through two years of treatment across two continents. Family, friends, food and films remained his focus and everyone who met him during this time was amazed at how he did not let his illness get the better of him. He was grateful for the love of his fans that poured in from the world over. In his passing, they would all understand that he would like to be remembered with a smile and not with tears. In this hour of personal loss, we also recognise the world is going through a very difficult and troubled time. There are numerous restrictions around movement and gathering in public. We would like to request all his fans and well-wishers and friends of the family to please respect the laws that are in force. He would not have it any other way.”

Diego Maradona asks for Hand of God to end pandemic HiIndia Newsdesk A decision to restructure Argentine football that will save Diego Maradona’s club from relegation was dubbed another Hand of God moment on Tuesday, but the former striker said the divine intervention he wished for was to beat the coronavirus pandemic. The Argentine Football Association voted to suspend relegation for two seasons on Tuesday, saving the Maradona-coached Gimnasia club, who are currently bottom of the league, from going down. “This happened to us today and many people are calling it a new Hand of God,” said Maradona, who dubbed his notorious hand-assisted goal against England in the 1986 World Cup as the Hand of God. “But today I am asking for that hand to do away with the pandemic so people can get back to living their lives, with health and happiness,” he added. Maradona said he disagreed with the decision to suspend relegation for two years but called the favourable ruling “a prize.”

Ingredients

*Pinch of ginger |*Pepper |Turmeric | Cinnamon | Cloves 500ml | Water *Honey, if needed

Feeling hungry after a heavy dinner? Here’s what you need to know

Method

Boil all the ingredients together. Let it boil till it becomes half. Switch off the flame. Sieve it. Add organic honey if you like. too. This can make you feel tired for the rest of the day. When there is a crazy surge in the blood sugar levels, your body sends you all kinds of signals. But then, when the level goes back to normal a time, you feel excessively hungry and ravenous — making you follow the cycle of eating more. Studies have been conducted on this subject, and according to one such study published in the journal Nutrients, we don’t really consume a lot of healthy food when we binge-eat. This makes the pancreas produce more insulin than necessary. This, in turn, can make the blood sugar level drop drastically, making you feel famished the next morning. It can also make you feel excessively thirsty. So, you need to first gulp down glasses of water so your body can replenish itself and not mistake it for hunger.

Tons of sanitizer: Indian Origian Retailer Charged with Hourding, Gouging BY A STAFF WRITER NEW YORK, NY- : An Indian-origin man has become the first person to be charged under the US’ Defence Production Act (DPA) during the ongoing coronavirus pandmeic with hoarding personal protective equipment (PPE) and price-gouging. Federal Prosecutor Richard Donoghue said that Amardeep Singh amassed critical personal protective equipment during a public health crisis and resold them at a huge mark-up. This “places him squarely in the crosshairs of law enforcement armed with the DPA”, he said. The DPA was invoked by President Donald Trump on March 18 to make it illegal to hoard scarce medical supplies and sell them at excessive prices during the COVID-19 pandemic. Singh obtained 5.6 tonnes of PPE, according to the prosecutor’s complaint filed in a federal court on Long Island. He had earlier posted an online video apology saying: “This was unintentional. For me to make a dollar on a couple hundred masks, it’s not the intention for me to become rich overnight.” Singh, who is also known as “Bobby Singh” and “Bobby Sidana”, runs a network of five sneakers and clothing businesses in New York suburbs on Long Island, according to the prosecution. He collected various PPEs like N-95 filtering facepiece respirators, face masks, surgical masks, face shields, gloves, coveralls and medical gowns as well as clinical-grade sanitising and disinfecting products and

thermometers starting in March when the pandemic began hitting New York, the prosecution said. The court complaint said that he sold gloves at a mark-up of 1,328 per cent. He had received 40 shipments of disposable face masks weighing more than 1.6 tonnes, 14 shipments of disposable surgical gowns weighing more than 2.2 tonnes, six shipments of hand sanitiser weighing more than 1.8 tonnes and seven shipments of digital thermometers weighing about 150 kilogrammes, according to the complaint. Postal inspectors, who executed a warrant, seized 100,000 face masks, 10,000 surgical

gowns, nearly 2,500 full-body isolation suits and more than 500,000 pairs of disposable gloves from his store and warehouse, according to the prosecution. Some of the PPEs had been sold by him to a children’s organisation and to several senior citizens’ organisations. He had earlier been issued a notice by the local consumer affairs authority for allegedly selling N-95 respirators illegally. New York Attorney General Leitia James had also issued a cease and desist notice about selling hand sanitisers and other disinfecting products, at “unconscionably excessive prices”.

the discretion of E4E Relief. All contributions made to the Fund will go to providing monetary grants to the loved ones of eligible healthcare workers and volunteers who lose their lives battling COVID-19, including spouses, domestic partners, children and parents. The Fund expects to begin taking grant applications in May. New York Life invites any individuals and institutions who would like to join the effort to visit www.braveofheartfund.com to learn more and make a donation. The Fund will be administered through E4E Relief, a subsidiary of the public charity Foundation For The Carolinas, working in partnership with New York Life and Cigna. E4E Relief has nearly 20 years of experience in helping compassionate companies respond to large and small crises, such as natural disasters and family emergencies, allowing employers to quickly care for their most important resources – their people. In the past five years, E4E Relief has received more than $200 million in donations and awarded more than $90 million in charitable grants, supporting relief efforts for 4 million people worldwide. The New York Life Foundation has already pledged more than $5 million to support local and national nonprofits in coronavirus-related efforts, including the Center for Disaster Philanthropy’s COVID-19 Response Fund, CDC Foundation, First Book, and Business Roundtable’s Project HOPE.

community news VHPA Statement on the lynching of Hindu Sadhus in Palgarh, India

FRIDAY,01 MAY, 2020

BY A STAFF WRITER CHICAGO, IL- World Hindu Council of America (VHPA) strongly condemns the lynching of Hindu sadhus (ascetics, monks) in Palgarh, India. The monks and their driver were traveling through the area when a murderous mob of over a hundred lynched the sadhus. 70-year-old Kalpavrishka Giri Maharaj and 35-yearold Sushil Giri Maharaj along with their driver, 30-year-old Nilesh Telgade were murdered. The sadhus were associated with the Juna Akhara , one of the oldest Sanyasi Parampara (ascetic lineage) religious traditions when they were on their way from Mumbai to Gujarat to pay final respects to their Guru , who had passed away recently. The murder of these sadhus is the latest in a series of events where Hindus have been targeted in India with impunity. The videos shockingly depict the local police handing over the sadhus and their drivers to the mob and meekly watching, as the ghastly deed is carried out. Ajay Shah, Executive Vice President of VHPA said, “We believe that the mob

lynching of sadhus is the result of decades of Hindu-hate, propagated by those who seek to break the Hindu society through terrorism and conversions. We implore the Hindu society to recognize these threats that are often global, and unite to preserve the universal Hindu values and Hindu way of life. The silence of India’s self-proclaimed “intellectuals” is even more jarring. A mere unsubstantiated allegation against Hindus brings out the loudest anti-Hindu voices in the national and international media.

However, this brutal killing of sadhus has not even registered a mild condemnation. The VHPA, which has been consistent in upholding the value of all human lives as important, calls upon all the faith-based organizations, intellectuals and media to recognize that Hindu lives matter.” Utsav Chakrabarti, VHPA’s Director of Awareness and Advocacy added: “The brutal events of Palghar show that despite being a majority in India, Hindus face threat from radical and extremists who find political patronage and economic support in many countries around the world. It is unfortunate that mainstream media outlets in the US continue to show their bias by ignoring violence targeting Hindu communities. A memorial should be erected in honor of the Sadhus at Palghar, the localities where they were murdered should be renamed after them.” The World Hindu Council of America demands that the state Government of Maharashtra set up a time-bound inquiry by an impartial commission and prosecute the criminals to the fullest extent of the law.

Department of Justice Announces Disruption of Hundreds of Online COVID-19 Related Scams FBI NEWS RELEASE WA S H I N G T O N , D C - Fe d e r a l authorities announced today that an ongoing cooperative effort between law enforcement and a number of privatesector companies, including multiple internet domain providers and registrars, has disrupted hundreds of internet domains used to exploit the COVID-19 pandemic to commit fraud and other crimes. As of April 21, 2020, the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) has received and reviewed more than 3,600 complaints related to COVID-19 scams, many of which operated from websites that advertised fake vaccines and cures, operated fraudulent charity drives, delivered malware, or hosted various other types of scams. To attract traffic, these websites often utilized domain names that contained words such as “covid19,” or “coronavirus.” In some cases, the fraudulent sites purported to be run by, or affiliated with, public health organizations or agencies. Fraudulent websites that spoofed government programs and organizations to trick American citizens into entering personally identifiable information, including banking details. Websites of legitimate companies and services that were used to facilitate the distribution or control of malicious software. Multiple federal agencies have worked to analyze the complaints, investigate ongoing fraud, phishing, or malware schemes, and assemble vetted referrals. Agencies have sent hundreds of these referrals to the private-sector companies managing or hosting the domains. Cybersecurity researchers have also made important contributions by developing sophisticated tools to identify malicious domains and refer them for mitigation. Law enforcement is actively reviewing leads, including those referred by private firms, to verify unlawful activity and quickly pursue methods for disruption.

Representative image

Shortly after the IRS notified the public of web links to apply for the COVID-19 related stimulus payments, the FBI identified a number of look-alike IRS stimulus payment domains. These lookalike domains are often indicative of future phishing schemes and in order to minimize the potential fraudulent use of the these domains, the FBI alerted numerous domain registries and registrars to the existence of these look-alike URLs. “The department will continue to collaborate with our law enforcement and private sector partners to combat online COVID-19 related crime,” said Assistant Attorney General Brian A. Benczkowski of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division. “We commend the responsible internet companies that are taking swift action to prevent their resources from being used to exploit this pandemic.” “ Wo r k i n g a l o n g s i d e o u r l a w enforcement partners and the private industry, the Civil Division’s Consumer

Protection Branch is taking action against all manner of COVID-19 consumer scams,” said Assistant Attorney General Jody Hunt of the Justice Department’s Civil Division. “Disrupting Internet-based fraud schemes is an important part of our effort to protect consumers from financial loss and health-related harms.” Numerous Justice Department components are working to combat COVID-19 related crime nationwide. TIPS CAN HELP TO PTOTECT; The following tips can help protect individuals and businesses from being victimized by cyber actors: Independently verify the identity of any company, charity, or individual that contacts you regarding COVID-19. Check the websites and email addresses offering information, products, or services related to COVID-19. Be aware that scammers often employ addresses that differ only slightly from those belonging

to the entities they are impersonating. For example, they might use “cdc.com” or “cdc. org” instead of “cdc.gov.” Be wary of unsolicited emails offering information, supplies, or treatment for COVID-19 or requesting your personal information for medical purposes. Legitimate health authorities will not contact the public this way. Do not click on links or open email attachments from unknown or unverified sources. Doing so could download a virus onto your computer or device. Make sure the anti-malware and anti-virus software on your computer is operating and up to date. Keep your operating system up to date as well. Ignore offers for a COVID-19 vaccine, cure, or treatment. Remember, if a vaccine becomes available, you will not hear about it for the first time through an email, online ad, or unsolicited sales pitch. Check online reviews of any company offering COVID-19 products or supplies. Avoid companies whose customers have complained about not receiving items. Research any charities or crowdfunding sites soliciting donations in connection with COVID-19 before giving any donation. Remember, an organization may not be legitimate even if it uses words like “CDC” or “government” in its name or has reputable looking seals or logos on its materials. For online resources on donating wisely, visit the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) website. Be wary of any business, charity, or individual requesting payments or donations in cash, by wire transfer, gift card, or through the mail. Do not send money through any of these channels. If you think you are a victim of a fraud or attempted fraud involving COVID-19, call the National Center for Disaster Fraud Hotline at 1-866-720-5721 or email at disaster@leo.gov. If it is a cyber scam, submit your complaint through https:// www.ic3.gov.
