t has been a style of contrast in campaign by Congress President Rahul Gandhi and his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who is the party’s star campaigner for the ongoing Lok Sabha elections. While Rahul has adopted an aggressive no-holds barred approach in attacking Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government, mainly over the Rafale issue, Priyanka has hardly mentioned the fighter jet deal matter directly. Rahul’s attack against the Prime Minister, with the repeated “chowkidar chor hai” jibe, is along the expected lines as the Congress chief has been highlighting the controversial defense deal. “Rahul is pursuing a no-holds barred approach and attacks the Prime Minister directly as he is expected to be doing so by virtue of the party position that he has,” said a party strategist. The Congress President’s main focus is to present Modi as pro-

rich while reiterating that the Congress cares for inclusive growth. Priyanka, on the other hand, has targeted the Prime Minister without naming him and has instead centered her campaign around his “unfulfilled” promises. She has also tried to defuse the Prime Minister’s references to Pakistan and the Nehru-Gandhi family.

distress and women seeking better law and order situation,” he said. Citing examples, party leaders said Priyanka took a dig at the Prime Minister by saying that the leader had time to travel to the US and Japan but did not visit a poor family in his parliamentary constituency Varanasi, which he promised to develop on the lines of Kyoto. Further, she tried to defuse references to Pakistan saying the Prime Minister had gone to eat Biryani there. “Priyanka smartly countered the attacks on late Prime Ministers Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi by saying if the BJP leaders were real nationalists, they should respect all martyrs as both Indira and Rajiv gave up their lives for the country. This way she was able to bring up the family references before the young voters,” said a senior AICC functionary. Priyanka’s subtle political messaging is quite different than Rahul’s rough and ready approach and suits the personalities of both the leaders, some party managers said.

he phenomenon of film actors joining forces with politicians is not a new thing. In the South, it happened much earlier while the Hindi film actors took the cue a bit late. One of the reasons the Hindi film industry kept away from politics for long was that the rulers and, as such, politicians were seen as enemies of film folk. Not one, there were many Swords of Damocles hung over the film industry by the rulers and usually used as tools. If at all, film folk wanted to be part of politics, the only option was the ruling party. The ruling party was well armed with excise duty (on prints), import duty on film raw stock (India kept making the highest number of films but never did anything about setting up a manufacturing unit for raw film), there were last minute income tax raids a day before a producer’s film was due to release, blocking censor certification and so on. So, when the film men’s move to politics started, it was all towards the Congress. Starting Sunil Raj with Patel Dutt and followed by the likes of

Barr refuses Mueller testimony

The standoff raises the prospect that the Attorney General could be held in contempt of Congress IANS, WASHINGTON

US Deputy Attorney General Rosenstein resigns

U

S Attorney General William Barr has refused to testify to the Democratic-led House Judiciary Committee on his handling of the Russia inquiry. Barr had previously objected to a plan for lawyers to ask questions at Thursday’s hearing, the BBC reported. Committee chairman Jerrold Nadler accused the White House of a “complete stonewalling of Congress”. The standoff raises the prospect that Barr, America’s top legal official, could be held in contempt of Congress. On Wednesday, Barr was grilled by a Senate panel about his decision to clear President Donald Trump of obstruction of justice. His defense of his actions before the Republican-led Senate Justice Committee came after Special Counsel Robert Mueller — who led the investigative hunt for links between the 2016 Trump campaign and Russia — expressed frustration over the report summary. Mueller is expected to testify to Congress later this month.

BRIEFS Brotherhood to be tagged terror outfit? WASHINGTON: The Donald Trump administration is pushing for designating the Muslim Brotherhood a foreign terrorist organization, according to officials familiar with the matter. The Muslim Brotherhood, set up in 1928 in Egypt, has for decades used violence to pursue its goal of a society governed by Islamic law. It renounced violence in the 1970s and embraced democracy, although some of its off-shoots and former members continued to engage in terrorism.

Plan for sweeping changes to asylum WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has announced a plan for sweeping immigration changes that take direct aim at migrants seeking asylum. The memo issued on Monday evening for the Attorney General and Homeland Security Secretary outlines a series of measures to address the situation along the border with Mexico, CNN reported. The measures include adjudicating asylum applications within 180 days of filing; requiring a fee for asylum applications and work permit applications. —IANS

A Department of Justice statement said Nadler had placed conditions on the House Judiciary Committee hearing that were “unprecedented and unnecessary”. The department said that the planned move to have attorneys question Barr was unnecessary because most of the committee members were themselves lawyers. However, Nadler told reporters

he believed that Barr was afraid to testify on Thursday given “how dishonest he has been”. “We plan on subpoenaing him if he decides not to show up. He can run but he can’t hide,” he said. “I hope and expect that the attorney general will think overnight and will be there as well,” he added. He testified for the first time on

WASHINGTON: US Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who appointed Robert Mueller as special counsel two years ago over investigation into the possible ties between President Donald Trump’s campaign and Russia during the 2016 US elections, submitted a long-expected resignation letter to Trump on Monday. His resignation is effective May 11. “I am grateful to you for the opportunity to serve; for the courtesy and humor you often display in our personal conversations; and for the goals you set in your inaugural address: patriotism, unity, safety, education and prosperity,” Xinhua quoted

Wednesday since the release of Mueller’s 448-page report. The special counsel did not establish any collusion between the Kremlin and the Trump campaign. However, the report did not

The Federal Open Market Committee, the Fed’s policy-making committee, decided to maintain the target range for the federal funds rate at 2.25 per cent to 2.5 per cent,

the central bank said in a statement on Wednesday after concluding a two-day policy meeting. The Fed noted that the labor market “remains strong” and economic activity “rose at a solid rate” since March, while growth of household spending and business fixed investment “slowed” in the first quarter, Xinhua news agency reported. The Fed reiterated that it “will be

WASHINGTON: Two people were killed and four injured after a man walked into a classroom at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNCC) and opened fire, authorities said. Three of those injured in the Tuesday incident were in critical condition while the fourth had less serious injuries, UNCC Chief of Police Jeff Baker was cited as saying by CNN. The police disarmed the suspect and took him into custody.

Biden lays economic plan in 1st speech as 2020 candidate IANS, WASHINGTON

F

ormer US Vice President Joe Biden used his first address as a 2020 Democrat presidential candidate to sketch out his economic plans, vowing to rebuild the countrys middle class in a state that helped hand President Donald Trump the White House three years ago. Appearing in a Teamsters hall in Pittsburgh on Monday, Biden scorned corporate greed, pledged to revive unions and said the minimum wage should be lifted to $15 an hour nationwide, The New York Times reported.

Former US Vice President Joe Biden

“Everybody knows it... The middle class is hurting,” Biden said. “The stock market is roaring, but

you do not feel it. There was a $2 trillion tax cut last year, but did you feel it? Did you get anything from it? Of course not. It all went to folks at the top.” He also centered his message squarely in his birth-state, telling a few hundred supporters who greeted him with “We Want Joe” chants that Pennsylvania is key to Democrats’ chances of reclaiming the White House. “If I’m going to beat Donald Trump in 2020, it’s going to happen here,” said Biden, noting that his party has “had a little bit of trouble” in the state — a reference to Hillary Clinton’s 2016 loss in

Pennsylvania. Biden is making his third bid for the presidency. Taking on the President directly, Biden said: “Donald Trump is the only president who has decided not to represent the whole country. “The President has his base. We need a President who works for all Americans.” Meanwhile, Trump slammed the Vice President in a tweet on Monday, saying he was elected because of the failures of President Barack Obama and Biden. “They didn’t do the job and now you have Trump, who is getting it done — big time.”

Jaish chief Azhar declared global terrorist, India hails move

China had been blocking Azhar’s listing despite a strong push by the US, UK and France, saying it did not have enough evidence to brand Masood an international terrorist

‘Push for bounty on Azhar’s head’ NEW DELHI: The Congress on Wednesday welcomed blacklisting of Pakistan-based JeM chief Masood Azhar as a global terrorist and said the government R. S. Surjewala should push for announcement of bounty on his head as was done by the UPA government against LeT chief Hafiz Saeed. In a statement, Congress Communications in-charge Randeep Singh Surjewala said that designation of Azhar as a global terrorist was only the first step and that Pakistan must be forced to dismantle the entire terror infrastructure operating from its soil. “All wanted terrorists like Masood Azhar, Hafiz Saeed, Dawood Ibrahim, Haji Mohammad Yahya Mujahid, Abdul Salaam and Zafar Iqbal thriving on Pakistani soil and involved in heinous terror attacks in India must be forthwith deported to India and brought to justice,” he said. —IANS

I

n a huge diplomatic victory for India and a blow to Pakistan, the UN Security Council on Wednesday declared Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) chief Masood Azhar as a global terrorist, a move that was being blocked by China for nearly 10 years. Soon after the sanctions committee that deals with Al Qaida and its affiliates voted on Pakistanbased Azhar’s designation placing him under stringent sanctions that includes a freeze on his assets and travel restrictions, Pakistan announced it would comply with the mandate. The decision of the UNSC’s 1267 Sanctions Committee came about two and a half months after the JeM carried out the ghastly terror attack in Kashmir’s Pulwama killing 40 CRPF personnel, an incident which, however, did not find a mention in the resolution adopted. India welcomed the decision — which comes while the country is in the middle of the general election — saying it was a “step in the right direction to demonstrate the international community’s resolve to fight against terrorism and its enablers”.

Sexual harassment case: CJI appears before probe panel NEW DELHI: Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi on Wednesday appeared before the in-house committee led by Justice S.A. Bobde, looking into allegations of sexual harassment against him by a former staffer of the Supreme Court, said an official source familiar with the proceedings. The source said the committee had asked the Chief Justice Gogoi to appear for the in-camera proceedings. “He met the committee regarding the allegations leveled against him,” said the source. The woman, who has alleged sexual harassment, withdrew from the proceedings of the committee on Tuesday. In a statement to the media, she expressed serious reservations over the panel, saying it was “an in-house committee of sitting judges junior to the CJI and not an external committee as I had requested.” The committee comprises Justices S.A. Bobde, Indu Malhotra and

Indira Banerjee. The panel was reconstituted after the woman objected to the inclusion of Justice N.V. Ramana on the committee, as he was apparently a Ranjan Gogoi close friend of the Chief Justice. Justice Ramana immediately withdrew from the panel, and he was replaced by a woman judge. In the three hearings scheduled until Tuesday, the woman said she felt “quite intimidated and nervous” in the presence of the three judges of the Supreme Court. The woman, in her statement to the media also said during the panel’s hearing on April 26, the judges told her that it was neither an in-house committee proceeding nor a proceeding under the Vishakha Guidelines and that it was an informal proceeding.

External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said that the action is “in accordance with India’s position and in line with the information that India has shared with the members of the Sanctions Committee regarding terrorist activities” of Azhar and the JeM. “India stands vindicated”, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley tweeted, adding: “... This marks a high point for the Prime Minister’s (Narendra Modi’s) foreign policy”. China had been blocking Azhar’s listing despite a strong push by the US, UK and France, saying it did not have enough evidence to brand Masood an international terrorist. It had put a

JAIPUR: Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Wednesday that it was a proud day for India after the United Nations (UN) declared Jaish-eMohammad (JeM) chief Masood Azhar a global terrorist. In a huge diplomatic victory for India, the UN Security Council (UNSC) on Wednesday declared Pakistan-based JeM chief Masood Azhar a global terrorist, a move that was being blocked by China for nearly 10 years. “This is the result of the joint efforts of 130 crore Indians,” Modi said while addressing an election rally here. “The international community stood beside India in its fight

“technical hold” on the proposal four times, the latest being in March. After the resolution was adopted, China said it ended its objection after India shared fresh evidence. “After careful study of the revised materials and taking into consideration the opinions of rele-

In a sop to Pakistan, spokesman Geng Shuang added that the international community should recognize that “Pakistan has made enormous contributions to fighting terrorism”.

Cyclone Fani moves up India’s coast IANS, NEW DELHI

P

rime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday reviewed the preparedness for cyclone ‘Fani’ and instructed Central government officials to maintain close coordination with officials of the affected states to ensure preventive measures, a government statement said. Chairing a high-level meeting, Modi also asked the concerned officers to take effective steps for relief and rescue operations, as required. The meeting was attended by Cabinet Secretary P.K. Sinha, Principal Secretary to the PM Nripendra Mishra, Additional Principal Secretary to the PM Pramod Kumar Mishra, Home Secretary Rajiv Gauba, and other senior officials from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and the Prime Minister’s Office.

The Prime Minister was briefed on the likely path of the cyclone, and the ongoing precautionary and preparatory measures being undertaken, said the statement. “These include provision of adequate resources; deployment of teams from NDRF and the Armed Forces; arrangements to provide drinking water; and standby systems to restore power and telecom services.”

Cyclone ‘Fani’ is expected to make landfall on the Odisha coast between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. on Friday, an officer said. Speeding over west-central Bay of Bengal, ‘Fani’ moved north-northeastwards at about 16 kmph and lay centered about 360 km south-southwest of Puri (Odisha), 190 km south-southeast of Vishakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh) and 550 km south-southwest of Digha (West Bengal).

Priyanka stays subtle

While Rahul Gandhi directly attacks Narendra Modi during political campaigns IANS, NEW DELHI

I

Congress General Secretary (Uttar Pradesh East) Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.

t has been a style of contrast in campaign by Congress President Rahul Gandhi and his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who is the party’s star campaigner for the ongoing Lok Sabha elections.

Rahul has adopted an aggressive no-holds barred approach in attacking Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government “This is Priyanka’s style. She takes on the Prime Minister without naming him and getting into a direct confrontation but delivers the punch,” said a strategist involved in her campaign. “She has focused on social justice by highlighting the plight of youth due to lack of jobs, farmers suffering from widespread rural

distress and women seeking better law and order situation,” he said.

When movies intertwine politics While popular film stars are joining ruling NDA, a section of film people branded it intolerant VINOD MIRANI, XXXXXXXX

T

he phenomenon of film actors joining forces with politicians is not a new thing. Starting with Sunil Dutt and followed by the likes of

BJP's Lok Sabha candidate from Gurdaspur Sunny Deol during a public rally in Gurdaspur, Punjab. (Photo: IANS)

Amitabh Bachchan, Rajesh Khanna and so on, who joined the bandwagon. I think the filmmakers got bolder after 1977, in the post emergency period. Dev Anand along with some like-minded industry folk had also gone ahead and formed a political party (The National Party) to contest elections to be able to put forward the film people’s views. This era also coincided with a new generation of film men, the educated

and the aware lot. Sunil Dutt was among the first ones to join electoral politics. Quite a few actors who joined politics were disillusioned quickly and gave up after a while. Amitabh Bachchan, Rajesh Khanna, Dharmendra, Govinda were those who called it quits. Those who were inducted through the Rajya Sabha, seemed least interested except for Jaya Bachchan. Raj Babbar is the one who has become the true blue

politician, changing parties and surviving; from the Janata Dal to Samajwadi Party to Congress. Things started changing a bit since the emergence of a stronger opposition to the ruling Congress as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged as a party to contend with. Filmmaking and all things about films is a business of instincts. Somehow, since the emergence of the BJP, more and more film people seem inclined towards the party and this time it is not only the stars. It may sound a bit odd but, of late, most of the film people either joining the party or advocating their cause is the BJP! And, those joining the BJP are not joining because they are either scared of the ruling party or want favours done. Of late, even the films that are being made and are working at the box office are those promoting social issues and nationalism. That is in keeping with the national mood (as said earlier, film folk have great instinct). But, things have changed now. Film folk are no longer moving to politics as an alternative when their film career is over. Looks like they are no longer scared or shy of com-

ing into the open. For example, Vivek Oberoi, who has played Modi in a biopic, claims to have been approached by any and every party to contest elections. There is no reason to believe his claims. As against that, Sunny Deol has been roped in by BJP in place of his father, Dharmendra, to defend Gurdaspur constituency, represented by the late Vinod Khanna. From the look of it, the BJP seems to be getting more saleable stars (in the film industry, they are the ones who matter). Coming back to film folk, this election got into news vis a vis the film industry because of some 600 people like Naseeruddin Shah forming a group to promote anti-Modi sentiments! The problem with this lot is that none of them has a popular appeal. Also, they have no explanation for why they want Modi to be defeated! They just wanted Modi out. While the popular film stars are joining the ruling NDA, a section of film people has branded it as intolerant. What is surprising is that most of these people have no assignments nor have anything to do with the government, directly or indirectly!

Leaders of uprising will face justice: Maduro In a video message, Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido called on the country and the Army to force Maduro from power IANS, CARACAS

V

enezuelan President Nicolas Maduro said on Wednesday that the judiciary “is looking for” those responsible for the military uprising his government put down earlier this week and that those involved “sooner rather than later” would pay for their acts with prison. “They are fleeing from embassy to embassy,” Maduro told thousands of supporters gathered near the Miraflores presidential palace, referring to opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez, whom he did not mention directly. “The judiciary is looking for them and sooner rather than later they will pay by going to prison for their treason and their crime,” he was quoted as saying by Efe news. Lopez on Tuesday circumvented the almost 14-year sentence he was serving in his home and joined the head of the opposition-controlled Parliament, Juan Guaido — whom more than 50 governments have recognized as Venezuela’s interim President — in urging the armed

forces to turn their backs on Maduro. In a video message broadcast on Tuesday, Guaido had called on the country and the Army to force Maduro from power. Dozens of demonstrations and clashes were reported in Caracas and across the country on Tuesday. More than 50 people were injured during the second consecutive day of street protests on Wednesday, bringing the total of

Axed UK Defense Secretary denies role in Huawei leak LONDON: Gavin Williamson, sacked as Britain’s Defense Secretary by Prime Minister Theresa May for allegedly disclosing plans to allow Chinese telecommunication giant Huawei to help build the UK’s 5G network, has denied leaking any information from the National Security Council. His comments have come amid calls for a police inquiry into it. Opposition MPs say there should be an investigation whether the Official Secrets Act had been breached, the BBC reported. Williamson was quoted in several newspapers on Thursday as saying he was the victim of a “vendetta” and a “kangaroo court”. He told Sky News he “swore on his children’s lives” that he was not responsible for the leak. He also posted a letter on his Twitter account on Wednesday “strenuously” denying that he was the source of the leak. Downing Street, however, said it had “compelling evidence” and the matter was closed. The inquiry into the leak began after the Daily Telegraph reported on the National Security Council’s confi-

dential discussions, including warnings from several Cabinet members about possible risks to national security over a deal with Huawei. At a meeting with Williamson on Wednesday, May told him she had information that suggested that he was responsible for the unauthorized disclosure. In a letter confirming his dismissal, she said: “No other credible version of events to explain this leak has been identified.” In response, Williamson, Defense Secretary since 2017, wrote he was “confident” that a “thorough and formal inquiry” would have “vindicated” his position. —IANS

injured since Tuesday morning to over 120, while 168 people have been detained, according to human rights NGO Foro Penal. A 24-year-old man died in clashes in the central state of Aragua. Maduro also said that US President Donald Trump was deceived when he was told that he (Maduro) intended to abandon the country and flee to Cuba after the military uprising led by Guaido.

Meanwhile, Guaido said that he will continue liberating the country’s “political prisoners” after he claimed that he had made efforts to get Lopez out of house arrest. “We’re going to continue liberating the political prisoners,” said the opposition leader to hundreds of supporters in eastern Caracas, near Petare. “We’re stronger, more determined,” he said, having on Wednesday received backing from opposition supporters on the streets after the failed military uprising. Guaido also said that he would speak “with any official” who helps him get Maduro out of office and set up a transitional government that would call free elections. “We are going to continue in the streets until we secure the freedom of Venezuela.” He received an additional boost from the international community on Wednesday after the Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia in the US ruled that only Guaido could legally represent the state of Venezuela on US territory.

IS chief cites Sri Lanka attacks in video LONDON: A man, appearing to be the Islamic State leader’s Abu Bakr Al Baghdadi, has appeared in a video posted on the terror group’s media network, vowing more attacks in revenge for loss of the “caliphate’s territory”, reports said on Monday. In the video, Baghdadi, who has not been seen after announcing the “caliphate” across his group’s conquered parts of Syria and Iraq in 2014, admits defeat at the group’s last stronghold in Syria and refers to the regime changes in Algeria and Sudan where long-time rulers have been forced to step down, the BBC reported. The video also mentions the Easter Sunday carnage in Sri Lanka - which the IS has claimed responsibility for, but in audio form towards the end of the video with no image of Baghdadi alongside, which indicates it might have been added later. The 18-minute video, which IS says was shot this month, was posted on the group’s al-Furqan media network. “The battle for Baghouz is over,” says Baghdadi, an 47-year-old Iraqi whose real name is Ibrahim Awwad Ibrahim al-Badri and was last heard in an audio recording last August, says in the video, referring to the group’s last territory in violence-torn Syria which the Kurdish militia claimed to have re-captured. “There will be more to come after this battle,” he is heard saying. —IANS

Japan welcomes Emperor Naruhito IANS, TOKYO

J

apan on Wednesday welcomed its new Emperor Naruhito who pledged to fulfil his role as a “symbol of the state and unity” and said he would follow the course charted by his father at a ceremony to formally recognize his accession to the throne. The 59-year-old was speaking as he officially began his reign on Wednesday in a short but symbolic ceremony at the Imperial Palace. He was joined on the dais by his wife, Empress Masako. Naruhito succeeds his father, 85year-old Akihito, who abdicated citing his age and failing health. According to semi-mythological tradition, Naruhito is the 126th consecutive Japanese Emperor. In his speech, Emperor Naruhito paid tribute to his father while pledging to show the same devotion to his people, the BBC reported. “(Akihito) showed profound compassion through his own bearing. I swear that I will reflect deeply on the course followed by the Emperor Emeritus and fulfil my responsibility as the symbol of the state and of the unity of the

people of Japan.” He technically became the Emperor at the stroke of midnight when his father’s reign came to an end — marking the start of the new Reiwa era, which roughly translates to “beautiful harmony”. Earlier in the day, he symbolically took possession of the sacred imperial regalia — a sword and a gem — that have been passed down through the generations. No female members of the imperial family were permitted to attend the ceremony after the government controversially decided to honor precedents set by previous accession rites.

The Minister for Regional Revitalization, Satsuki Katayama, was the only woman present on the occasion. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe later welcomed the new Emperor on behalf of the nation. “We are determined to create a bright future for a proud Japan filled with peace and hope at a time when the international situation is changing dramatically,” he said. Chinese President Xi Jinping was among several world leaders to sent their congratulations. Kyodo news agency quoted Xi as saying Japan and China had “a long history of friendly exchanges”.

ndian-American Hirsh Singh has announced that will seek the Republican nomination for US Senate in 2020 against Democratic New Jersey Senator Cory Booker. Singh, a director for Hi-Tech Systems in New Jersey, said in a Facebook post: “Help me fix Jersey. Spread the news, we’re here to win. Today, I launch my campaign for US Senate. For the People of New Jersey. Let’s remove Cory Booker.” The Republican has already filed documents forming his campaign committee with the Federal Election Commission, The American Bazaar reported. This is not Singh’s first innings in politics; in fact, this is his third bid for the public office. Last year, he lost in the Republican primaries to Seth Grossman when, he ran for the 2nd Congressional District seat. Before that, in 2017, Singh ran in the Republican primary for the governor. Singh is an engineer by profession and is from Atlantic City. According to The Shore News Network, Singh has picked up the endorsement of

Singh is the first Republican to announce challenge to Booker, who is also running for President. On his newly launched website, Singh announced: “We the people of New Jersey are suffering from political extremism and out-of-control egos. Our representatives have forgotten who they serve. Our economic engine is choking and our infrastructure is crumbling. Together, we will rebuild the state.” Singh has been extremely critical of Booker’s policies. Singh holds an engineering degree from the New Jersey Institute of Technology. He has worked with several top government organizations, including NASA, the Department of Homeland Security, the Federal Aviation Administration, the Pentagon, and the US military.

n Indian man has been charged with two counts of kidnapping, assault and theft in the US after he drove off in a sexagenarian’s car from outside a hospital with her two grandchildren inside the vehicle. Dalvir Singh, 24, a heroin addict, was taken into custody and charged with two counts of kidnapping, felonious assault for dragging Nita Coburn, 69 and grand theft, the Middletown Division of Police said in a statement. The elderly woman was injured in the late last week’s incident as the car dragged her while she was trying to stop Singh. The kids, meanwhile, jumped out of the car, CBS News reported. The police hailed the woman’s 8year-old grandson as a “hero” for saving his 10-year-old sister from the suspect’s grasp by pulling her out of the car as Singh took off in it. back seat. As Coburn helped the woman into the emergency room, Singh hopped into the driver’s seat

and took off with the car - with the kids still in the back. The boy thought quickly and was able to open the door to escape. The girl began to jump out of the car as well but the Singh grabbed her hoodie to keep her from getting out of, the police said. “As she tried to get away, her little brother grabbed hold of her and pulled her away from the kidnapper and they both tumbled out of the vehicle as it was moving,” it said in the post. Coburn didn’t realize her grandchildren had escaped since they’d rolled out of the passenger side while she chased the car on the driver’s side, the police added. The post said the car dragged her as it “accelerated at a high rate of speed” and she was “forced to let go”. Middletown Police Chief Rodney Muterspaw lauded the boy, saying: “This little guy is a hero. No question. He pulled his sister out of the car with no concern for his own safety. That is incredible at his age.”

Wadia fiasco can hurt Kings XI New IPL rules can affect Kings XI Punjab in the Indian Premier League after Ness Wadia’s sentence in Japan BAIDURJO BOSE, NEW DELHI

K

ings XI Punjab co-owner Ness Wadia being sentenced for drugs possession while on a skiing holiday to Japan could mean trouble for the Indian Premier League team. As per the Operational Rules of the cash-rich league, no team official involved with the league can act in a manner which brings disrepute to the team, the league, the BCCI or the game on or off the field. If guilty, the persons action can even lead to suspension of the team. While the matter is required to be first sent to the commission for investigation, the commission will then forward its finding to the ombudsman. Citing the manner in which Chennai Super Kings (CSK) had to bear the brunt for the acts of the team principal, a senior BCCI functionary said that KXIP could be in deep trouble. “The KXIP are unfortunately looking at suspension as a best case scenario and termination as a worst case scenario due to the conviction of an owner in a criminal case of drug possession. “No less than the Lodha panel had suspended the CSK for two years because their team official was accused of betting. In this case we

Bajrang eyes Indian support at NY event NEW DELHI: World no. 1 Bajrang Punia has requested the Indian diaspora in New York to come to the Madison Square Garden as the wrestler Bajrang Punia is all set to become the first Indian to fight at the iconic place. Bajrang, who was nominated by the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) for the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award on Tuesday, took to Twitter and requested the Indians to come in big numbers on May 6 when he will take on two-time US national champion Yianni Diakomahlis. “I want to request all Indians and wrestling lovers in NY to come to Madison Square Garden on May 6 to encourage me. I am the first Indian to be invited by the American Wrestling Association to fight at Madison Square Garden,” he said.

have an owner convicted of drug possession by a criminal court. If he was a state cricket official he would have stood disqualified from holding office automatically. “This also exposes the discriminatory provisions of the new BCCI constitution which is draconian for a state association but doesn’t put any restriction on a franchise official even though IPL performances clearly matter more for selection to the Indian team than Ranji performances,” the functionary told IANS.

As per the IPL Operational Rules accessed by IANS, clause 14 of section 2 of the IPL Operational Rules state that each person subject to the operational rules shall not, whether during a match or otherwise, act or omit to act in any way which would or might reasonably be anticipated to have an adverse effect on the image and/or reputation of any Team, any Franchisee, any Player, any Team Official, the BCCI, the League and/or the Game or which would otherwise bring any of the

foregoing into disrepute. It further state that the ombudsman and the commission may suspend a team or franchisee from the league if any person representing the team/franchise breaches clause 14 of section 2. While adjudicating in the IPL betting matter against CSK and Rajasthan Royals, the Lodha panel had taken into consideration section 4, rule 1.1 of the Operational Rules, which puts strict obligations on each franchisee that its team officials

complies with the regulations. This was to ensure that cricket should be played not only within the laws, but also within the spirit of game and nothing was done by its representatives (Team Officials), players and etc on the field or off the field which is contrary to the spirit of the game or which adversely affects the reputation of the game. This saw the Lodha panel not just ban CSK team principal Gurunath Meiyappan and RR coowner Raj Kundra for life from any matches conducted by BCCI, but also suspended CSK and RR for two years. It is this precedent that is set to haunt the KXIP since CSK had been suspended for two years despite there being no adverse finding of misconduct against any player or the team. In fact, even as per the Lodha report, RR was suspended for Kundra’s act of bringing the game into disrepute by betting and the three players’ case wasn’t the focal point in deciding the quantum of punishment. Whereas, in this particular case, a team owner has actually been convicted of a criminal offense. A BCCI executive said that it was strange that no statement had been made on such a matter by CEO Rahul Johri.

India, England retain top spots in Tests, ODIs IANS, DUBAI

I

ndia and England have retained their top positions in the team rankings for Tests and ODIs, respectively, after the annual update in which series results from 2015-16 are removed, and outcomes from 2016-17 and 2017-18 are weighted at 50 per cent. India’s lead over New Zealand in the ICC Test Team Rankings has narrowed from eight to two points and England remain at the top of the ICC ODI Team Rankings with their gap over India reduced to just two points in an expanded table. In the Test rankings, India were on 116 points and New Zealand on 108 before the update. But India’s 3-0 win over South Africa and 2-1 win in Sri Lanka being purged as part of the 2015-16 season sees them losing three points while New Zealand’s two 2-0 defeats to Australia being removed sees them gain three points. In the only change of positions on the table, England have overtaken Australia to fourth position

Virat Kohli.

and are on 105 points. Australia are on 98 points after dropping six points as they had won four of the five series in 2015-16, no more part of the calculations. In another significant movement, the gap

between seventh-placed Pakistan and eighth-placed West Indies has trimmed from 11 to two points. In the ODI rankings, England have retained the No. 1 ranking but to go into the World Cup as

the top-ranked side, they will need to beat Ireland in an upcoming one-off ODI and then beat Pakistan 3-2 or better in a home series, or lose to Ireland but then beat Pakistan 4-1 or better. South Africa have overtaken New Zealand at the third spot while another change in positions sees the West Indies moving ahead of Sri Lanka to seventh place. No team has dropped out of the top 10, thus ensuring that the World Cup will see the 10 top-ranked sides in action. Three of the four teams awarded ODI status at the end of the World Cricket League Division 2 will join the rankings once they have played the requisite eight qualifying matches. However, PNG join the rankings immediately having played several ODIs prior to April 2018. The Netherlands, who already had ODI status, will need to play two more ODIs to achieve a ranking. The annual update for the ICC Men’s T20I Team Rankings will be made on May 3.

voter turnout of 64 per cent was witnessed at 72 Lok Sabha constituencies spread across nine states which went to the elections on Monday in the fourth phase. The turnout in 2014 in these seats was 61.48 per cent. The polling percentage improved in Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Bihar while it was less in West Bengal and Odisha and marginally less in Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand compared to the last election. It was somewhat better in Rajasthan. The poll percentage is expected to go up once all the votes cast are taken into account. The voting percentage was 69.50 per cent in the first phase, 69.44 per cent in the second and 68.40 per cent in the third phase. Senior Deputy Election Com-

RANCHI: Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Thursday alleged that the Narendra Modi government has waived Rs 5.5 lakh crore loan of the industrialists in the last five years but has not done enough for farmers, youths or traders. “Narendra Modi has not worked for the farmers, youths, traders rather he worked only for 15 people in last 5 years and waived their Rs 5.5 lakh crore loan,” Rahul Gandhi said at a rally at Simdega district of Jharkhand. Prominent leaders of the Grand Alliance for the first time shared a dais in the state after the poll alliance was announced. “Modi’s government diverted Rs 35,000 crore MNREGA rural job fund to Nirav Modi. They reduced right to food fund. Modi has promised two crore jobs but employment could not be generated. “If Narendra Modi can lie, why can’t Congress speak truth?” he added. —IANS

constituency in Jammu and Kashmir where 10.5 per cent people exercised their franchise compared to 36.84 per cent in 2014. The seat is witnessing a three-phased election. Of the states that went to the polls, Rajasthan saw a voter turn out of 64.5 per cent for 13 seats that went to the polls compared to 64. 48 in 2014. It was 65.77 per cent in six seats of Madhya Pradesh (64.84 in 2014), 63.39 per cent in three seats of Jharkhand (63.82 in 2014), 76.44 per cent in eight seats of West Bengal (83.38 in 2014), 58.82 per cent in five seats of Bihar (56.18 in 2014), 58.23 per cent in seventeen seats of Maharashtra (55.58 in 2014). In Odisha, where polling was also held for 41 assembly seats alongside six Lok Sabha seats, the voter turn out was 68 per cent compared to 73.75 per cent in 2014. In 13 seats of Uttar Pradesh, the polling percentage was 57.58 per cent compared to 58.39 per cent in 2014.

he Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is facing a tough challenge from the Mahagathbandhan (MGB) on seven of the 12 seats in Uttar Pradesh in the next phase of the Lok Sabha polls. Polling will be held on 14 seats, the highest so far in the state, in phase 5 on May 6. The BJP had swept this central region winning 12 seats while the Congress had retained Amethi and Rae Bareli, the Gandhi family strongholds. If the votes polled by the MGB constituents Samajwadi Party (SP) and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) in 2014 -- when they had contested separately -- are taken into account, the BJP’s road to victory will become tougher in at least seven seats which it had won last time. If SP and BSP are able to hold on to their committed voters, the going will be tougher for the BJP in Bahraich, Mohanlalganj, Sitapur, Kaisarganj, Kaushambhi, Banda and Dhaurahra. The BJP can effectively tackle the MGB factor in Gonda, Faizabad, Lucknow, Barabanki and Fatehpur. The phase is crucial for the Congress as well, as fate of several of its leaders is on line, including party president Rahul Gandhi and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi. Prominent young Congress leader Jitin

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is facing a tough challenge from the Mahagathbandhan (MGB) on seven of the 12 seats in Uttar Pradesh.

Prasada is facing a tough battle in Dhaurhara, a seat he has represented twice in the past. Another senior leader P.L. Punia’s son Tanuj is locked in a multi-cornered battle in Barabanki. However, there is a twist in political tale on some seats compared to 2014. In Bahraich, Sadhvi Savitri Bai Foole, who had won on a BJP ticket in 2014 is contesting as the Congress candidate. In Barabanki, the BJP has not given ticket to sitting MP Priyanka Singh Rawat and gone for MLA Upendra Rawat. The MGB has fielded four time MP Ram Sagar Rawat from this seat. Even though considered to be an SP stronghold, the BJP seems to have an advantage in the Baraban-

ki battle. The party had got 45,4211 votes in 2014 compared to BSP’s 1,67,150 and SP’s 1,50,284. The Congress’ P.L. Punia had polled 2,42,336. With Congress remaining out of MGB, it is advantage BJP. Voting will also be held in politically sensitive Faizabad in Awadh from where the BJP has fielded sitting MP Lallu Singh, who will face tough challenge from MGB and the Congress. Apart from taking on the MGB in the rest of the seats, the BJP is giving tough fight to Rahul Gandhi in Amethi. Gandhi had defeated Smriti Irani of BJP by 1,07,903 votes. He had got 46.71 per cent votes and Irani polled 34.38 per cent. BSP candidate Dharmendra

LUCKNOW: Even as the top leadership of Congress and SP trade charges in the heat of elections, Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Thursday addressed a meeting of the Samajwadi Party, organized in Unchahar in Rae Bareli. The meeting had been organized by SP MLA Manoj Pandey. It is noteworthy that the Samajwadi Party and the Bahujan Samaj Party are not contesting the Rae Bareli and Amethi seats and are supporting the Congress here. Priyanka Gandhi thanked the SP for supporting the Congress and helping in the fight against communal forces. The Congress leader denied that she had said anything about Congress putting up candidate to cut into votes.

Pratap Singh had got 57,716. This time, it is a direct contest between Congress and the BJP. The battle for Sonia Gandhi, though appeared to be smooth, who had polled 5,26,434 votes and had won with a margin of over 3.5 lakh against her rivals Ajay Agrawal of the BJP and Pravesh Singh of BSP. BJP has fielded ex-Congress leader Dinesh Pratap Singh against her.

BJP begins talks with Jagan The party chief Amit Shah is said to have begun backchannel talks with Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy for a possible alliance post verdict IANS, HYDERABAD

G

earing up for the postpoll scenario, where it may need support from non-NDA parties, BJP has begun backchannel talks with YSR Congress Party, which may emerge as a kingmaker in the event of a hung Parliament. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chief Amit Shah is said to have begun backchannel talks with Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, whose YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) is likely to bag majority of 25 Lok Sabha seats in Andhra Pradesh. According to sources, the talks are on over Jagan’s charter of demands with Special Category Status (SCS) to the state topping the list. Other demands could include number of ministries for YSRCP and the financial and other assistance the state would get from Delhi. However, there was no confirmation from YSRCP leadership about the backchannel talks. Party leaders

said they were not aware of any talks between Jagan and Shah. The final four phases of the poll, started on April 29, is described as the real election for BJP.

Out of 240 seats that are at stake in these phases, BJP had bagged more than 160 in 2014 polls. If things do not move its way in these crucial phases, the BJP may have to look for support from oth-

ers, especially someone like Jagan, given the number of seats his party is predicted to win. The BJP leaders, however, feel that some of the demands put forth by Jagan as a precondition

Why New Delhi seat is important... NIVEDITA SINGH, NEW DELHI

TN CM K. Palaniswami.

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K. Palaniswami wondered why Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) chief M.K. Stalin gets worked up when disciplinary action is sought to be taken against ruling party legislators. Speaking to reporters in Coimbatore, Palaniswami said it was not known why DMK was interfering in the ruling party’s disciplinary action against its own legislators. On April 26, All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) chief whip S. Rajendran had submitted a petition to Assembly Speaker P. Dhanapal to take action against three legislators for their anti-party activities. Rajendran said the party had proof of their prejudicial activities and hence the petition was submitted to the Speaker. Photographs of the legislators with the Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK) General Secretary T.T.V. Dhinakaran had also been submitted.

for support were outlandish. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) raids on YSRCP leader and industrialist K. Raghu Rama Krishna Raju in an alleged Rs 947 crore bank loan default case on Tuesday assumed significance in this backdrop. The BJP apparently wanted to send a message to Jagan. It is an open secret that BJP and YSRCP have had good relations, especially after Telugu Desam Party (TDP) walked out of National Democratic Alliance (NDA) over its refusal to accord SCS to Andhra Pradesh. In fact, one of the reasons Chief Minister and TDP president N. Chandrababu Naidu cited for severing ties with BJP was the latter cosying up to his rival Jagan Mohan Reddy. Frequent appointments given by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Jagan and his other party leaders had angered Naidu. Realizing that their party is already on a weak turf in Andhra, both Modi and Shah during the couple of rallies they addressed trained guns on Naidu but avoided criticizing Jagan.

C

all it a coincidence or whatever. Since 1992 by-elections, a party which wins the Lok Sabha constituency, forms government at the Center. In fact, out of all the 16 general elections and two by-elections since 1951, a party which won the seat formed the government at the Centre 13 times. The Constituency, which came into existence in 1951, always witnesses a high profile contest. In the 2014 elections, the seat was bagged by the BJP whose candidate Meenakshi Lekhi got 4,53,350 votes (47.02 per cent) votes, while Ashish Khetan from AAP got 2,90,642 votes (30.14 per cent) and Ajay Maken from Congress came third with 1,82,893 votes (18.97 votes). In the 2009 and 2004 elections, when the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) formed the government at the Centre, the New Delhi seat voted for Maken. The Congress leader won the 2009 election against BJP’s Vijay Goel by 1,87,809 votes in 2009, and in 2004 he won the election against BJP’s Jagmohan by 12,784 votes. In 1998 and 1999 Lok

Sabha elections, when the BJP-led NDA formed the government at the Centre, the electorate here elected BJP’s Jagmohan, who defeated Congress leader R.K. Dhawan both times. Interestingly the margin of victory both times was around 30,000 votes. In 1996, when the constituency gave mandate to Jagmohan of the BJP, which emerged as the single largest party in the Lok Sabha and formed a government at the Centre. The government, however, collapsed in just 13 days as it could not muster the required majority on the floor of the House.

Jagmohan, a former Governor of Jammu and Kashmir during the peak of militancy, defeated actorturned-politician Rajesh Khanna of the Congress by 58,315 votes. In 1991 elections, when the Congress formed the government at the Centre with P.V. Narasimha Rao as the Prime Minister, BJP leader L.K. Advani was elected from New Delhi constituency. He, however, resigned from the seat as he had won from Gandhinagar in Gujarat, too. And in the by-election that followed in 1992, the seat was won by Rajesh Khanna who defeated BJP’s Shatrughan Sinha.

Before 1992, there was no such trend, although out of the nine Lok Sabha elections and one by-poll held between 1951 and 1989, such a scenario was witnessed six times. In the first Lok Sabha polls in 1951, the case was opposite. While the Congress won the General elections with a landslide victory by bagging 364 of the 489 seats and 45 per cent of the total votes polled, the New Delhi voted for Kisan Mazdoor Praja Party’s Sucheta Kriplani, who defeated Congress’ Man Mohani Sehgal with 7,671 votes. Of the total 1,02,175 votes, Kripalani got 47,735 votes. In the second General election in 1957, Kripalani again won the election but this time she was contesting on the Congress ticket and her party formed the government at the Centre as well. However, the constituency saw a by-poll in 1961 where Balraj Madhok of Bharatiya Jana Sangh (BJS) got elected, while the Congress formed government at the Center. This time, the seat will see a triangular contest. While the BJP has named its sitting MP Lekhi, the Congress has named its two-time MP Maken and the AAP has named 43-year-old Brijesh Goyal.

‘Avengers Endgame’ hits Rs 240 crore in India

The last of the superhero series has earned $1.05 billion globally and was expected to cross the $2 billion-mark next weekend IANS, NEW DELHI

A

vengers: Endgame”, the final part of the superhero series, has clocked Rs 240 crore in India within sixth days of its release, inching closer to Rs 250-mark in India and ready to breach Vicky Kaushal’s ‘Uri The Surgical Strike’s box office collection which earned Rs 244 crore. Avengers: Endgame has earned $1.05 billion globally and was expected to cross the $2 billion mark next weekend. On Tuesday, the film eclipsed the lifetime earnings of Black Panther ($1.347 billion) and Avengers: Age Of Ultron ($1.405 billion) to emerge as the eighth highest grossing global movie of all time. The star-studded film “Avengers: Endgame”, which has Hollywood biggies like Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo and Chris Hemsworth suiting up as the world’s favorite superheroes, minted a “historic” total of Rs 104.50 crore (net box office collection) in India in just two days of its release. It released in Hindi, English, Tamil and Telugu across 2,845 screens in India. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted on Sunday: “‘Avengers: Endgame’ is rewriting record books. Puts up a

historic total on Day 2. Eyes Rs 150 crore + weekend. No biggie from Hindi film industry has achieved the target so far.” Comparing it to filmmaker S.S. Rajamouli’s magnum opus “Baahubali 2”, Adarsh wrote: “‘Baahubali 2’ (Hindi) rewrote the rules of the game exactly two years ago. Almost everyone felt that the

records attained by the film will remain unchallenged for a long, long time. But ‘Avengers: Endgame’ is challenging it right now.” “‘Avengers: Endgame’ shatters the myth that a massive screen count is the key to collect big numbers on Day 1/weekend. ‘Avengers: Endgame’ has released in 2,845 screens, but its occupancy is much,

much higher than Hindi biggies that open in 4,000+ screens,” he added. “Avengers: Endgame”, the 22nd film of Marvel Cinematic Universe, marks the end of an era that revolved around mighty heroes like Iron Man, the Hulk and Captain America. It is helmed by the Russo Brothers -- Joe and Anthony.

Movie actors votes with pride

MUMBAI: The Bachchans, the Roshans, the Khans, the Devgns and a stream of other Bollywood celebrities voted in the fourth phase of the Lok Sabha elections here in Mumbai on Monday and urged others to step out and make their vote count. Megastar Amitabh Bachchan stepped out with wife Jaya, son Abhishek and daughter-in-law Aishwarya to cast their votes, looking cool and calm in white. Filmmaker Rakesh Roshan also turned up with his wife Pinky, daughter Sunaina and son Hrithik in tow. Hrithik’s former father-in-law Sanjay Khan came out to vote with his son Zayed and daughter Farah Khan Ali. Actress Kareena Kapoor Khan brought along her two-year-old son Taimur Ali Khan to cast her vote. Adding some color and drama to a polling booth here was Ranveer Singh, who sported eclectic sunglasses and bright clothes. Kangana Ranaut wore a sari, and even Urmila Matondkar, the Congress candidate from the Mumbai North seat, chose a desi avatar to cast a vote. While star candidates like Urmila and Sunny Deol are fighting elections, the BJP used Bollywood’s soft power and engaged celebrities like Aamir, Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar, Deepika Padukone, A.R. Avengers Endgame: Unmissable but disappointing package

E

ntering the cosmic universe of the Marvel super-heroes as they all assemble in a swaggering spectacle of strength and temerity, Ais like a child being put in a middle of the largest toystore in the world and told he can buy any and everything he wishes. The child is so confused by the big treat he forgets why he was there in the haven for escape in the first place. The extravagance of this epic-designed non-epic is meant to salute one last hurrah of the great superheroes who all have their individual mass followers. A Imagine what happens when they all come together under the same roof Yeah, just imagine! Firstly the scriptwriters must be credited for their audacity, if not their ingenuity. To write some-

thing that accommodates more than a dozen super-heroes without toppling over into the abyss is no mean achievement. Avengers Endgames doesn’t topple over. But just about. It manages to keep its head above the water as the propulsive but not compelling storytelling ambles through what looks a gallery of emphatic episodes that spotlight the ‘cool’ proportion of the characters without making any genuine effort to understand why these superheroes find themselves becoming irrelevant in comparison with the supervillain. The harder the superheroes try look relevant the less we are impressed. Thanos (played with majestic gravity by Josh Brolin) the villain is the reason why we have all gath-

Thanos is a villain by default. He believes the world needs more than a slew of super-heroes to make it relevant. And he is right. And there lies the problem in this posh but pale sendoff to the beloved Marvel super-heroes. Its lineup of heroes(which includes many cameo appearances by beloved heroes, male and female,

whom we may have forgotten) seems like a bunch of over-the-hill do-gooders who could do with a long break from saving the world. And they are getting, it seems. These super-heroes are no match to the magnificent rhetorical heft and tonal supremacy of Thanos. And they know it. The narrative therefore revels in their underwhelming presence enjoying their post-prime existence. They throw

barbs jokes and taunts at one another. Chris Hemsworth’s Thor is shown to be potbellied beer-guzzling former idol, now idle. ‘Avengers Endgame’ is a surge of temporal spectacle that begs to be supported by something more than mere idol-worship. What we get is not so much the end of an era as a marathon farewell episode to a saga that is clearly in the mood for a reinvention. —Subhash K Jha

But it is her sensual yellow sari with a ‘pallu’ twisted like a rope and thrown over her shoulder, that has caught attention. Award-winning textile designer Gaurang Shah feels the essence of the sari has got completely diluted. “Well, everyone one has a choice to reinvent, but that doesn’t mean you do away with essence that made sari a beautiful attire for generations,” he said.

ollege going boys who often attend parties or go to bars for drinks are more likely to be sexually aggressive compared to those who do not, says a new study. “We found that it wasn’t alcohol use, per se, that leads to sexual aggression,” said Michael Cleveland, Associate Professor at Washington State University. “But the combination of alcohol and the setting that the drinking takes place in had a major impact on the number of reported aggressive tactics used,” Cleveland added. A group of over 1,000 college males participated in a survey for the research. The survey was conducted by email or online. “We

“Our findings looking at the eating habits of students during exam periods confirm this stress-induced dietary deterioration hypothesis,” said Nathalie Michels, lead researcher from Ghent University in Belgium. The results are based on an anonymous online survey of 232 students (aged 19-22 years) recruited from Ghent University and other universities in Belgium. The researchers investigated the relationship between exam stress and change in dietary quality, and whether these associations were modified by psychosocial factors such as eating behaviour, food choice motive, taste preference, reward/punishment sensitivity,

impulsivity, coping strategies, sedentary behaviour and social support. During the month-long exam period, participants found it harder to stick to a healthy diet, and only a quarter fulfilled the WHO recommended 400g of fruit and vegetables a day. “To fight against stress-induced eating, prevention strategies should integrate psychological and lifestyle aspects including stress management (like emotion regulation training, mindfulness, yoga), nutritional education with techniques for self-effectiveness, awareness of eating-without-hunger, and creating an environment that stimulates a healthy diet and physical activity”, Michels elaborated.

Shun these 4 triggers to limit smartphone addiction WASHINGTON: Researchers have decoded four common triggers for the compulsive use of smartphones which, if addressed, can help shun the screen addiction. The four triggers for habitual smartphone use are: During unoccupied moments, like waiting for a friend to show up; before or during tedious and repetitive tasks; when in socially awkward situations and when people anticipate getting a message or notification. “For a couple of years, I’ve been looking at people’s experiences with smartphones and listening to them talk about their frustration with the way they engage with their phones,” said study co-author Alexis Hiniker,

Taller kids at higher risk of kidney cancer

Kids who grow from average to above average height has an eight per cent increased risk of renal cell carcinoma IANS, LONDON

H

eavier and taller children are more likely to develop kidney cancer as adults than their average-sized peers, warn researchers. “We know that overweight in adulthood is associated with an increased risk of renal cell carcinoma (RCC). We also know that cancers take many years to develop. We therefore had a theory that already being overweight in childhood would increase the risk of RCC later in life,” said lead author Britt Wang Jensen from Bispebjerg and Frederiksberg Hospital in Denmark. RCC is the most common form of kidney cancer found in adults. For the study, the researchers included 301,422 individuals from the Copenhagen School Health Records Register born from 1930 to1985. The weights and heights were measured at the ages seven to 13 years, and body mass index (BMI) was used to categorize the children

as normal-weight or overweight, suggested by the International Obesity Task Force. During a median of 32 years of observation, 1,010 individuals (680 men) were diagnosed with RCC. Among men and women, significant and positive associations were observed between childhood BMI and height, respectively, and RCC risk. Children who grew from average

to above average height had an eight per cent increased risk of RCC, the study said. “Our findings that heavier and taller children have increased risks of RCC open the door to new ways to explore the causes of kidney cancer,” Jensen said. The study was presented at the European Congress on Obesity being held in Glasgow, Scotland from April 28 to May 1.

f you are finding it hard to deal with the pressure at the workplace, there is more reason to worry. New research has found that work stress and impaired sleep are linked to a threefold higher risk of cardiovascular death in employees with hypertension. “Sleep should be a time for recreation, unwinding, and restoring energy levels. If you have stress at work, sleep helps you recover,” said study author Karl-Heinz Ladwig, Professor at Technical University of Munich, Germany. “Unfortunately poor sleep and job stress often go hand in hand, and when combined with hypertension the effect is even more toxic,” Ladwig said. The study included around 2,000 hypertensive workers aged

25-65, without cardiovascular disease or diabetes. Compared to those with no work stress and good sleep, people with both risk factors had a three times greater likelihood of death from cardiovascular disease, showed the findings published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology. People with work stress alone had a 1.6-fold higher risk while those with only poor sleep had a 1.8-times higher risk, the study said. In the study, work stress was defined as jobs with high demand and low control — for example when an employer wants results but denies authority to make decisions. “If you have high demands but also high control, in other words you can make decisions, this may even be positive for health,” said Ladwig.

Familial breast cancer may Drugs show promise to prevent stroke be preventable by medication IANS, LONDON

VIENNA: Breast cancer passed down in families may be preventable by the medication Denosumab, which is undergoing a five-year study in Austria. The Austrian Breast and Colorectal Cancer Study Group is leading the work as it examines the drug’s effectiveness on 2,950 patients with a hereditary disposition to this particular form of cancer, according to an Austria Press Agency report. Speaking at a press conference on

Thursday, Professor Christian Singer from the Vienna General Hospital said the study will also examine the effects of Denosumab on healthy women who have a mutation in the BRCA1 gene, reports Xinhua news agency. These women have a 1.8 per cent chance of developing breast cancer each year, or about an 80 per cent chance during their lifetime. In addition, they have a 50 per cent chance of developing ovarian cancer.

Smartphone, AI may help detect DR NEW YORK: Equipping a smartphone to capture retinal images and using artificial intelligence (AI) to interpret those may help overcome barriers to ophthalmic screening for people with diabetes, says a study. Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a condition that can lead to permanent vision loss if not detected early. At the 2019 annual meeting of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, researchers from Kellogg Eye Center revealed that combining a smartphone-mounted device

that takes high-quality retinal pictures with AI software might offer a solution for better screening of DR. The key to preventing DR-related vision loss is early detection through regular screening,” said Yannis Paulus, lead researcher and Assistant Professor from University of Michigan. According to Paulus, also a vitreoretinal surgeon at Kellogg Eye Center, “the key is to bring portable, easy-toadminister, reliable retinal screening to primary care doctors’ offices and health clinics. —IANS

wo drugs, in use for treating heart disease and angina, have shown promise in an early trial in preventing stroke and dementia caused by damage to small blood vessels in the brain. The drugs — cilostazol and isosorbide mononitrate — were tested in a group of patients in Britain. The results published in the journal EclinicalMedicine showed that patients tolerated the drugs, with no serious side-effects, even when they were given in full doses or in combination with other medicines. “The results of this trial show promise for treating a common cause of stroke and the most common cause of vascular dementia, since currently there are no effective treatments. Further trials are underway,” said lead researcher Joanna Wardlaw, Professor at University of Edinburgh in Britain. Damage to small blood vessels in brain is responsible for around a quarter of strokes. It is also a common cause of memory problems and dementia. At present, the only way to reduce risk of the disease is

by controlling blood pressure and cholesterol, stopping smoking and managing symptoms of diabetes. For the study, researchers recruited 57 patients who had experienced stroke caused by damaged small blood vessels, known as a lacunar stroke. They took the two medicines either individually or in combination for up to nine weeks, in addition to usual treatments aimed at preventing further strokes. They completed health questionnaires and had regular blood pressure checks, blood tests and brain scans. The findings suggest

the drugs are safe for use in stroke patients, taken alone or in combination, at least in the short term. There were also signs that the treatment helped improve blood vessel function in the arms and brain, and may improve thinking skills, but researchers stressed further studies to test this. Experts believe the findings pave the way for larger studies to check if the treatment can prevent brain damage and reduce risk of stroke and vascular dementia. A larger study, called LACI-2, is underway, said a statement from University of Edinburgh.

Success is a unique journey – often made possible by a supportive community. That’s why U.S. Bank spotlights community partnerships and celebrates influencers who have opened doors for the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community this AAPI Heritage Month. The celebration comes to life through sharing stories, fostering a sense of community and supporting business growth. Sharing stories: In celebration of AAPI Heritage Month, U.S. Bank is helping community members tell their stories through the Wing Luke Museum. The Wing Luke Museum and U.S. Bank go back more than 15 years. Implementing a unique, nationally recognized approach, the museum leverages direct input from everyday community members who curate exhibits that celebrate their stories. “In addition to our 10 display galleries, our building is actually a historic hotel where Chinese, Japanese, Filipino and other Asian immigrants lived when they first came to America,” said Julie Salathe, director of grants and sponsorships. “Visitors can take guided tours in the historic half of the building.” U.S. Bank employees also volunteer at events including the summer JamFest. U.S. Bank has made a new $5,000 donation to support the Wing Luke’s Teensway workshops, in addition to existing grant funding. Fostering a sense of community: Through a brand-new partnership, U.S. Bank will sponsor senior citizen activities in May in Chicago, including financial education, hands-on learning and group activities to

help seniors overcome the social isolation they often experience after moving to the United States. “Our partnership with U.S. Bank is ideally aligned,” said Selma D’Souza, executive director of the Indo-American Center in Chicago. “Both of us have a shared goal to strengthen the community, and we need U.S. Bank support, including their volunteers, to make our programs successful.” Supporting business growth: In Los Angeles, U.S. Bank’s near-decade-long partnerships with the Asian Business Association (ABA) and the Asian Pacific Islander Small Business Program (APISBP) create opportunities for the AAPI community all year long. For nine years, U.S. Bank has made ABA programming possible to fuel the success of the Asian business community. “We are very proud to partner with U.S. Bank to further our mission and showcase emerging businesses,” said Dennis Huang, ABA executive director and CEO. “With their support, we allow our community to gain economic opportunities and advancement where they are often overlooked – by sharing information about access to capital, real estate development, minority certification and business succession planning, and empowering women-owned businesses.” U.S. Bank and APISBP celebrate 10 years

BY A STAFF WRITER CINCINNATI, OH- A family member found the four -- a man and three women -- wounded Sunday night in the apartment in West Chester Township, roughly a 25-mile drive north of Cincinnati, police said. The man who found them called 911 and told a dispatcher that his wife, mother, father and aunt were down and bleeding. Herzog, speaking to the news media on Monday, said it

didn’t appear any of the four had fired a weapon. Officials in two countries say they don’t believe it was a hate crime Police have said they’re trying to figure out a motive in the killing. But officials in Ohio as well as in India, where the family had roots, have said the killings did not appear to be a hate crime. Herzog said it appeared all four lived at the Ohio apartment, along with some children. The children were not at the apartment at the time of the killings, and are safe with relatives, Herzog said. Divers returned to a pond near the apartment as part of a property-wide search for clues and Investigators are sweeping an apartment complex in a suburban community in Ohio seeking clues to learning who killed three women and a man found dead in their home and why. Police said there was no new information available.
