‘Charging Trump was no option’

U
S Special Counsel Robert Mueller said that charging President Donald Trump was “not an option” for his team of prosecutors due to the Justice Department guidelines that prohibit charging sitting US President with a crime. Mueller on Wednesday made his first-ever public statement about his investigation into the alleged Russian interference in the 2016 US presidential election, Xinhua reported. “Charging the President with a crime was not an option we could consider,” Mueller said, adding that “it would be unfair to accuse someone of a crime when there could be no court resolution of the charge.”
BRIEFS ‘Trump tearing down hard-won civil rights’ NEW YORK: Former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said President Donald Trump’s administration was tearing down hard-won civil rights”. “We’ve seen a surge in hate crime across America -- shootings and arson at synagogues, mosques and churches, Americans targeted because of their race, religion or sexual orientation,” Clinton, the 2016 Democratic presidential nominee, said while delivering the commencement address at the Hunter College. “And instead of standing up against bigotry and white supremacy, this administration has too often worked to tear do hard-won civil rights.
‘Need to correct trade imbalance with Japan ‘
TOKYO: Visiting US President Donald Trump on Monday said that he needs to correct a “tremendous” trade imbalance with Japan, suggesting there may be a major announcement on the issue in August. “Trade-wise, I think we will be announcing some things probably in August that will be very good for both countries,” Kyodo News quoted the President as saying following the meeting between Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe here. He added that both countries will work to rectify what Trump sees as a lack of fairness in his country’s economic relationship with Japan.
“The report is my testimony”, Muller said referring to his inverstigators’ 448-page report

“If we had confidence that the President clearly did not commit a crime, we would have said so,” he said. “We did not determine
whether the President did commit a crime.” “The Constitution requires a process other than the criminal

India removed from US currency monitoring list, China stays IANS, WASHINGTON
T
he US Treasury Department has removed India from its currency monitoring list of major trading partners. In its semi-annual report to US Congress on International Economic and Exchange Rate Policies, the department on Tuesday removed India and Switzerland from the currency watch list of countries with potentially questionable foreign exchange policies. India, along with China, Japan, Germany, Switzerland and South Korea, was placed in the bi-annual
Steven Mnuchin.
currency watch list in October last year. The US, however, continued to keep China on its watch list. “Treasury continues to urge China to take the necessary steps to avoid a persistently weak curren-
cy,” said US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin in a statement. Mnuchin stated that China’s renminbi had fallen against the dollar by eight per cent over the last year. He also noted that China’s trade surplus with the US had also widened. Besides China, the currency watch list also included Japan, South Korea, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Malaysia, Vietnam and Singapore, according to the department’s latest report. However, the department, in its report, has declined to designate China or any other major trading partner as a currency manipulator.
Mueller added. “That is the office’s final position.” “The report is my testimony,” Mueller said in his on-camera appearance, referring to his investigators’ 448-page report. Mueller, who didn’t take questions from the reporters, said he would prefer not to publicly testify before Congress about his 22month probe. In quick response, Trump tweeted: “Nothing changes from the Mueller Report. There was insufficient evidence and therefore, in our Country, a person is innocent. The case is closed! Thank you.” Mueller also announced Wednesday that the special counsel’s office was officially closed and that he would be resigning from the Justice Department as special counsel to return to private life.
China military to replace Windows SAN FRANCISCO: In the thick of trade tensions between the US and China, Chinese officials have decided to develop a custom operating system (OS) that will replace Windows on computers used by the Chinese military to avoid hacking risks. The decision, while not been made official through the government’s normal press channels, was reported this month by Canada-based military magazine Kanwa Asian Defense that said that Chinese military officials would not jump from Windows to Linux but instead develop a custom OS, ZDNet reported. China fears US hacking tools could get into any device.
Pompeo likely to visit India to explore growing ties ARUL LOUIS, NEW YORK
A
s Narendra Modi gets into his second innings as Prime Minister, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is likely to visit India in June to discuss the path ahead for India-US relations. State Department spokesperson Morgan Ortagus said on Tuesday that “Pompeo will have a very robust discussion on a range of issues” with Indian leaders but did not say when. According to sources in New Delhi, Pompeo was likely to visit India ahead of the June 28-29 G20 summit in Osaka, Japan, when US President Donald Trump and
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. (Photo: IANS)
Modi are scheduled to meet. Pompeo would lay the groundwork for their meeting.
“India is a great ally and partner of the US,” Ortagus told reporters in Washington. The US “will work
closely with Modi, as we have many times”. After Modi led his ruling coalition to a sweeping election victory, Trump had said that he sees “great things” for India-US relations. During his phone call to congratulate Modi, the two leaders agreed to meet on the sidelines of the Osaka summit. Despite the ties that have grown closer during Modi’s and Trump’s first terms mainly centerd on the Indo-Pacific region and the subject of fighting terrorism, there are several issues on which the two differ. One of them is Iran, which cropped up during Ortagus’ media briefing.

J.P. Nadda set to be BJP President Fifty nine-year-old Nadda is a Rajya Sabha member who is known as a master strategist in his party IANS, NEW DELHI
W
ith BJP organizational architect Amit Shah set to join the Cabinet, the decks are being cleared for the baton to be handed over to outgoing Health Minister J.P. Nadda as the new President. Nadda is expected to work closely with Shah even after the latter demits office for the election whirligig simply doesn’t end. Once the Union Budget is out of the way on July 10 (in all probability), then sometime in September this year, three states will go to the polls — Maharashtra, Jharkhand and Haryana. Nadda will then oversee the election campaign strategy. Thereafter there is a possibility of polls in Jammu and Kashmir and even a
Another Trinamool MLA joins BJP NEW DELHI/KOLKATA: West Bengal’s ruling Trinamool Congress on Wednesday suffered another jolt as one of its prominent Muslim faces, MLA Monirul Islam, joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Islam, elected from Labpur constituency, and several office bearers of the Trinamool Congress in Birbhum district joined the saffron camp at the BJP headquarters in Delhi in the presence of its General Secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya and senior leader Mukul Roy. Other TMC leaders to defect include Gadadhar Hazra, a former Trinamool MLA, Asif Iqbal and Nimai Das. Iqbal and Das are district office bearers of the party. A state minister, however, played down the defection, saying it was “not a matter of concern”. After their formal induction, Vijayvargiya accused Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of practising politics of “terror” in the state and claimed she had lost the faith of the people as well party cadres. “People of West Bengal now have faith in Prime Minister Narendra Modi and they feel he can do all-round development of the state,” he said. Alleging that Trinamool’s Birbhum district chief Anubrata Mondal earned Rs 20 crore a month by extortion, Islam said his defection to the BJP was a protest against Mondal’s illegal activities. People rejected Mondal in the Lok Sabha polls as Trinamool lost in five Assembly segments in the district, he said, even though West Bengal’s ruling party won both Lok Sabha seats in Birbhum. —IANS

highly wobbly Karnataka where the coalition appears to be skating on thin ice. Early next year, the battle for Delhi will gain precedence over everything else.
Fifty nine-year-old Nadda is a Brahmin and a Rajya Sabha member who keeps a low profile but is also parliamentary board secretary of the BJP. Nadda is known as a
master strategist in his party. The party had given him charge of Uttar Pradesh in the recently concluded hustings. The party bagged 62 out of 80 Lok Sabha seats. Apna Dal bagged two against a caste calculus driven combine of BSP and SP. Educated at St. Xaviers School, Patna, Nadda thereafter did his B.A. from Patna College, Patna University and LL.B. from Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla. He is three time MLA in the Himachal Assembly. He came to the upper house from Himachal Pradesh and was appointed Minister in 2014. He now has to meet the exacting standards set by Amit Shah. With the BJP securing a fresh beach head in the south in Telengana where it has won four seats along with 23 in Karnataka, Nadda is expected to focus on operation south to expand

A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi told Coordinator Prateek Hajela: “Don’t cut short the process just because you have to meet the deadline of July 31.” The court said: “There are media reports how claims and objections are being dealt by the officials involved in the NRC. And the media is not always wrong. They are right sometime. Please make sure there are no loopholes in the process and it is done properly.” The court queried the Coordinator on the apparent possible

tion of final Assam NRC draft was non-negotiable and it should not be met at the expense of those who have filed claims for inclusion of their names in the NRC. “They should be given procedural chance to present their case,” the court said.

ith Congress President Rahul Gandhi adamant that he will not withdraw his resignation, he remains, in parallel, furious with the old guard Ashok Gehlot, Kamal Nath and P. Chidambaram (Gehlot’s son Vaibhav lost while Kamal Nath’s son Nakul and Chidambaram’s son Karti won) - who were busy pushing their children in the recently-con-
cluded hustings and “not working for the party per se”. However, better counsel is now prevailing where he has accepted that he will lead the Congress party in the Lok Sabha where its strength, from a paltry 44, has gone up to 52, an increase of a mere eight MPs. Sonia Gandhi will remain UPA Chairperson and the family/dynasty will distance itself from day-to-day affairs of the party. An interim Working President

the BJP’s footprint and become truly pan Indian. A confident Nadda during his first visit to Lucknow after being appointed Uttar Pradesh election in-charge in January this year had exuded confidence that the BJP will win 74 Lok Sabha seats out of 80 in Uttar Pradesh and downplayed the SP-BSP alliance in the state for the general elections. At a meeting with senior office bearers of the party, Nadda, had predicted that the BJP would register a handsome win in the Lok Sabha polls and all records will be broken. In the 2014 general elections, the BJP had won 71 Lok Sabha seats in the state and two other went to its ally — the Apna Dal. The BJP won 62 against a tough opposition while the alliance only managed 15.
Gehlot: BJP trying to trip opposition governments JAIPUR: Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Thursday accused the BJP of trying to dismantle the opposition parties governments in West Bengal, Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh. Gehlot tweeted: “Even before the swearing in ceremony of newly-elected BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) government, they are trying to disturb and dismantle the state governments of the opposition parties including West Bengal, Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh.” Gehlot, however, extended his wishes to Prime Minister Narendra Modi who is set to swear-in later in the day for his second term in office. —IANS
Chauhan could be one of the Vice Presidents. Given that the Congress has 23 MPs from the south, it appears that a south Indian will helm the party for the time being. Or alternatively, cut the umbilical cord with the past and appoint Jyotiraditya Scindia as the Working President and have the youth brigade around him to turn the party’s fortunes around. The recent rout which has seen the Congress draw a blank in 16 states, two Union Territories and as many as eight Chief Ministers and the leader of the party in the Lok Sabha losing is its darkest chapter yet. In the ensuing vacuum, Treasurer Ahmed Patel, once Political Secretary to Sonia Gandhi, is back holding the reins.

he parliamentary election in the world’s largest democracy was watched by all countries, big and small, for reasons that are not far to seek: the likely impact on India’s rising profile at the global level, the manner in which an extraordinary amount of dirt was kicked up by the opposition - itself divided by caste, creed and region - against the Modi government making the outsiders wonder about the levels to which the public discourse could dip here and the unparalleled scale of management of the polls in a country of India’s size that was once again tested for the Central Election Commission’s competence and firmness. The results denote, first and foremost, a triumph of democracy which would get India a deeper respect from the democratic world and give an enhanced sense of assurance to the international community at large that the voice of peace and development would be strengthened. Incremental reforms a must do for next government The new government needs to evalute reasons that might be currently hindering the investment process TAPONEEL MUKHERJEE, NEW DELHI
A
s the new government takes office, it is time to reflect on some of the most critical areas that need attention to boost the investment and business climate in India. While structural reforms around land acquisition and labour laws remain on the top of the agenda, the new government would do well to focus on implementing incremental policy changes and addressing gaps in the various sectors that would significantly boost the investment climate. Incremental reforms refer to a slew of smaller steps that help facilitate investment into the critical areas of financial services, energy, transportation and real estate amongst others.
In an economy of the size, diversity and complexity of India, facilitating change through incremental steps has a significant role to play. Smaller steps will allow the government to gauge the effect of policy changes through a feedback mechanism, which in turn will assist the government in improving and altering the policy, when required, in the right direction. Changes and tweaks to policy in India will have a significant multiplier effect in an economy of the size of India. True that comprehensive structural reforms have the advantage of being “big bang” events, but incremental policy changes can be game changers once their effect is viewed over an extended period. It is vital that incremental is not confused with “small”. The government must continue
on the path of improvement for strategies that have yielded positive results over the last few years, like the transparent auction mechanism for renewable energy, newly introduced Infrastructure Investment Trust (InvIT) mechanism for fundraising, and auctions to monetise infrastructure assets. These innovative and successful policy changes must continue, and more importantly, the learnings from these must be applied to other sectors. For instance, can the government bring further clarity around auction rules, revenue sharing, and asset sales to help India boost energy exploration in India, especially in the light of India’s increasing dependence on Petroleum, Oil and Lubricant (POL) imports? Could the first Toll-Operate-Transfer (TOT) highway auc-

tion conducted by the NHAI lay a template to boost infrastructure fundraising in other sectors for the government? These are questions worth pondering over by the government. The government needs to evaluate reasons that might be currently hindering the investment process. A slowdown in the investment process is not necessarily a problem if done for the right reasons. But, for
instance, in sectors where a slowdown has been seen such as a series of auctions in renewable energy that did not find takers and the liquidity crisis that the NBFC sector is facing, there needs to be a reassessment of existing policy. But the aim must not be to just tide over the current issues but to create mechanisms that improve the system to reduce and eventually avoid the problem going forward.

The Iranian leader said that negotiations are the “US tactics to complement its pressures policy on Iran”, Xinhua reported. Iran possesses the “necessary tools” to confront US pressures, he added. Iranian authorities have stressed
that Tehran will not sit for negotiations under Washington’s threats or sanction pressures. Following US President Donald Trump’s decision to quit the historic Iran nuclear pact on May 8, the United States reimposed sanctions, which had been lifted under the accord, against Iran and vowed to inflict punishments on nations and institutions that have business links with Iran. Trump’s administration has called for renegotiation of the Iranian 2015 nuclear deal as well as Tehran’s developing missile program and its regional role. People illegally immigrating from Canada to the US is a twist to the perceptions that President Donald Trump’s America is hostile to immigrants and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Canada welcomes them. Many immigrants in US lose jobs WASHINGTON: Hundreds of immigrant laborers in the USA who can’t prove their legal status are being forced to quit after their employers received ‘no-match letters’ from the Social Security Administration (SSA), according to media reports. ‘No-match letters’ are sent out when the SSA detects discrepancies between its records and the information provided by employees on their W-2 tax forms. In some cases, however, the discrepancies could be due to administrative or date-entry errors. The SSA announced earlier this year that it would resume the practice of sending ‘no-match letters’ to employers after a sevenyear hiatus. Out of fear of being hit with federal sanctions, employers receiving the letters have chosen to do a “cleanup” of their labor forces, Efe news reported. “These measures put employers in an alarming situation,” immigration activist and analyst Carmen Cornejo said. —IANS

INDIA SET FOR MODI 2.0 President Ram Nath Kovind administered the oath of office and secrecy to PM Narendra Modi at a ceremony at the forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhavan IANS, NEW DELHI
N
arendrabhai Damodardas Modi, who led the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) to a spectacular victory in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, on Thursday took oath as the Prime Minister. President Ram Nath Kovind administered the oath of office and secrecy in Hindi to Modi at a ceremony attended by thousands of people at the forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhavan. With representation to different states and various caste and social groups, Modi has sought to broaden BJPs reach through the composition of the council of ministers with some first-time MPs making the cut even as nearly half of his previous cabinet has been replaced. The composition of the council of ministers reflected BJP's emergence as a principal pillar of national politics as most of the states got representation. The Modi government sworn in on Thursday has 20 first-time union ministers including BJP chief Amit Shah, former Foreign Secretary S. Jaishankar and two former chief ministers Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank and Arjun Munda. Shah has joined the ministry after leading the BJP to a string of election victories. Jaishankar, one of the longest serving foreign secretaries, played a key role in shaping Modi's foreign policy during his first term, which saw a significant growth and expansion of India's ties with key countries, particularly

the US and the Arab nations. He was the Foreign Secretary from January 2015 to January 2018. Nishank again won from Haridwar Lok Sabha seat and his inclusion gives representation to Uttarakhand in the Union Council of Ministers. Former Jharkhand chief minister Arjun Munda had played a role in BJP's growth in the state and has won the Lok Sabha poll from Khunti. Pratap Chandra Sarangi, BJP MP from Balasore in Odisha, received the loudest applause as he took oath as a minister. He is known for a simple lifestyle and using bicycle as a mode of transport. With J.P. Nadda not part of the council of ministers, Anurag
Thakur, apart MP from Hamirpur and son of former chief minister Prem Kumar Dhumal, will represent Himachal Pradesh in the cabinet. He has been made a minister of state. The BJP won 25 of 28 seats in Karnataka despite a Congress-JD(S) alliance and two senior party MPs from the state have made it the council of minsters for the first time - Suresh Angadi from Belgaum and Pralhad Joshi from Dharwad. BJP MP from Secunderabad in Telangana G. Kishan Reddy is also a first-time minister. Kailash Chowdhary, who defeated former Union minister Jaswant Singh's son Manvendra Singh in Barmer, was also sworn in as a minister.
Rattan Lal Kataria's name has been a surprise inclusion in the list. Kataria defeated former union minister Kumari Selja in Ambala. Giving greater representation to West Bengal where the BJP recorded a very impressive performance, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inducted Debosree Chaudhary, party MP from Raiganj, as a minister of state. Other new ministers include Bihar BJP chief Nityanand Rai, Rameshwar Teli, who has been reelected Assam, Renuka Singh Saruta, BJP MP from Sarguja in Chhattisgarh, Som Parkash and former IAS officer who has been elected from Hoshiarpur in Punjab. From Maharashtra, Sanjay Shamrao Dhotre, BJP MP from

Sushma dropped from new Modi government
Also missing in the new Council of Ministers were Suresh Prabhu, J.P. Nadda, Uma Bharati, Radha Mohan Singh and Maneka Gandhi among others SIX WOMEN IN MODI’S MINISTRY
Sushma Swaraj IANS, NEW DELHI
I
n a major surprise, Sushma Swaraj, one of the senior-most leaders of the BJP, was among several ministers of the previous Council of Ministers to be omitted from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s new government which was sworn-in on Thursday. Also missing in the new Council of Ministers were Suresh Prabhu, J.P. Nadda, Uma Bharati, Radha Mohan Singh, Birender Singh, Maneka Gandhi, Mahesh Sharma, Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, Jayant Sinha, Manoj Sinha, K.J. Alphons, S.S. Ahluwalia, Vijay Goel, Ananth Kumar Hegde, Ram Kripal Yadav, Anant Geete and Anupriya Patel and some others. Sushma Swaraj, the 67-year-old veteran leader who has served the party and its governments in various key positions for decades, was

conspicuous by her absence in the new Cabinet. Although the reasons for her omission were not immediately clear, but it could be due to her illhealth. Sushma Swaraj, who was External Affairs Minister during the previous term of Modi government, did not contest the Lok Sabha elections this time, declaring that her health did not permit her to enter the fray and campaign. During her tenure as the External Affairs Minister, she was very popular among the Indian diaspora and the compatriots stranded anywhere on earth. Just one tweet tagging her about any problem any Indian faced anywhere and she would immediately swing into action and activate the Indian mission in those countries for help. tion during the UPA government from 2004 to 2014, Sushma Swaraj was the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha and a successful one. Along with her, Prabhu, who held the key portfolios of Railways and then Commerce and Industry and Civil Aviation, also did not find a place in the new Council of Ministers. Nadda, who was the Health Minister in the previous term, also was absent from the list of ministers this time. However, there is speculation that he could be made the BJP President, to succeed Amit Shah who has been included in the Cabinet. Radha Mohan Singh, the Agriculture Minister in the previous government, was also not among those who took oath today, like Manoj Sinha, the former Minister of State for Railways and Commu-
nications. Sinha had lost the elections from Uttar Pradesh’s Ghazipur. Another significant omission was former firebrand BJP leader Uma Bharti, who held the portfolio of Water Resources initially in the previous government before she was given Drinking Water and Sanitation Ministry. Birender Singh, the Rural Development Minister in the previous government, was also dropped, as was Maneka Gandhi, who had been the Woman and Child Development Minister. Rathore, a former Olympian who was Sports and Information and Broadcasting Minister, also did not figure in the list of ministers. Mahesh Sharma, the Minister for Tourism and Culture in the previous government, was left out this time.

Bollywood bids adieu to Veeru Devgan Veeru Devgan breathed his last at a hospital here due to age-related issues and cardiac arrest IANS, MUMBAI
Veeru directed actions, fights and stunts for top actors like Dilip Kumar and Rajesh Khanna
V
eteran Bollywood action director Veeru Devgan, father of actor Ajay Devgn, died at the age
of 85. Veeru Devgan breathed his last at a hospital here due to age-related issues and cardiac arrest. A large number of Bollywood personalities attended the funeral at the Vile Parle Crematorium here in the evening. A runaway lured by love for the world of glamour and films, Veeru came from Amritsar to Mumbai to become an actor but went on to become an acclaimed action choreographer with over 80 films under his belt. Though his own dream of working as a mega-actor remained unfulfilled, his son Ajay made it big in Bollywood and is ranked among the most successful and versatile
BRIEFS Ranveer to play Gujarati in new film MUMBAI: In the midst of working on 83, actor Ranveer Singh has signed up another film. He will play a Gujarati in Yash Raj Films’ (YRF) Jayeshbhai Jordaar, to be helmed by debutant writer-director Divyang Thakkar. The actor calls it a “miracle script”. The project, a humorous entertainer set in Gujarat, is being produced by YRF’s homegrown producer Maneesh Sharma, who also discovered Divyang, and it will go on floors this October. He has worked with top filmmakers like Rohit Shetty and Zoya Akhtar.
Remo’s film to hit screens next year MUMBAI: Remo D’Souza’s upcoming directorial Street Dancer 3D has got a new release date. It will now hit the screens in January 2020 instead of the end of this year as planned. Street Dancer 3D was slated to release on November 8, 2019, but the film’s makers issued a statement on Monday saying that it will now release on January 24, 2020. The team of Street Dancer 3D, produced by Bhushan Kumar, Divya Khosla Kumar, Krishan Kumar and Lizelle D’Souza, are currently shooting for its second schedule in Dubai. Last week, its lead actor Varun Dhawan got emotional on the sets. He broke down while performing on a sad number. It also stars Shraddha Kapoor, Prabhudheva and Nora Fatehi.

action-cum-emotion stars. Veeru directed actions, fights and stunts for some of the top actors Dilip Kumar, Rajendra Kumar,
Rajesh Khanna, Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Vinod Khanna, Anil Kapoor and others, said Tina Films Associate Director
Ramya V. Iyer. “He was in great demand from the top actors. During the shooting of Himmatwala, Veeru was not
available for directing the action scenes and the director wanted to hire Tinu Anand. However, Jeetendra spoke with Veeru and convinced him to come and take up the film,” veteran Bollywood filmmaker A. Krishnamurthi told IANS. Iyer said he had the knack of bringing new techniques in action scenes and kept upbreast with everchanging technological advances in the world of action. He could make the most impossible and hair-raising action scenes appear simple and actors used to observe him closely at work.
Hrithik Roshan’s ‘Super 30’ now set for July 12 release IANS, MUMBAI
H
rithik Roshan-starrer Super 30 has a new release date, finally. It will hit the screens on July 12. Super 30 had earlier landed in a clash with actress Kangana Ranaut’s Mental Hai Kya on July 26, but Hrithik urged the makers of his film to shift its release date to avoid a “media circus”. Shibasish Sarkar, Group CEO, Reliance Entertainment, which has backed the film, tweeted: “‘Super
30’ now on July 12, 2019.” The film has been getting delayed for one reason or another. Earlier, Super 30 was to release on January 25, the same date as Kangana’s Manikarnika: The Queen Of Jhansi. But Super 30, based on the life of mathematician Anand Kumar who trains students for IIT-JEE in Bihar, did not see the light of the day on that date due to pending production work after director Vikas Bahl was named in the #MeToo movement.
Later, it was rescheduled for a July 26 release. But the makers had to give up on that date as well after Kangana’s Mental Hai Kya was moved to this date. Hrithik had then said in a statement: “So as to not allow my film to be desecrated by yet another media circus, I have decided to shift the release date of my film Super 30 in order to save myself from the personal trauma and toxic mental violence this would cause. “Despite the film being ready, I

have requested my producers to shift and announce the next suitable date as soon as possible,” added the actor, who has had a personal clash with Kangana in the past.
Modi biopic not historical, but mythological
T
his is not the Narendra Modi biopic that we’ve all been waiting for. The one that shows this powerful, wellmeaning, sincere statesman taking hard decisions and taking on opponents like a lion in a jungle of craven wolves. No. This is not even a biopic. It is a mythological saga, a passionate pauranic paean to the powerful Prime Minister who took his teaselling childhood to a glorious Himalayan summit beyond ‘Chaina.’ Seen in that dazzling hagiographic light, this film is not so offensive. Vivek Oberoi handles the principal role with a certain amount of flair and decency. His eyes speak

more than a thousand words. Lamentably, this is a film that believes in the power of verbal lamp-posts. Every self-glorifying thought that
this celluloid holographic Modi feels must have a verbal counterpoint. Every rhetoric and retort, every aphorism that our PM has uttered or not uttered (the line between fact and fiction in this ersatz biopic is non-existent) is given the status of a large hoarding. You have to be blind to miss the message. PM Narendra Modi is very clear about its agenda. And Vivek obliges with overt obsequiousness. In one sequence, he
communicates on metaphysical ideas with his spiritual guru (played by Suresh Oberoi) which ends with the guru declaring his shishya ready for politics. For a brief interlude, I thought I was watching Karate Kid. Tragically, Vivek is in awe of the character he plays, thereby robbing even the genuine moments, like those shared with his mother (a severely under-utilised and overwigged Zarina Wahab) of their shine. What shines through is the resilience of a filmmaker — far more intense than anything that PM Narendra Modi has ever attempted in his political career — to venerate the subject of the ostensible biopic. — Subhash K Jha

The actor has taken a career turn to do Article 15, an investigative drama about discrimination. “After doing good box office numbers with four back-to-back films, as an artiste and as an actor, you get the courage to do a film which has a certain social responsibility that can make the nation think,” Ayushmann said in a statement.

England off to impressive start It was some disciplined bowling by the hosts which helped them garner an impressive 104 run win against South Africa IANS, LONDON
Brief scores:
O
pener Quinton de Kock's valiant 68 run effort and Rassie van der Dussen's half-century went in vain as South Africa succumbed at 207 runs in reply to England's 311 in the tournament opener of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 at the Kennington Oval here on Thursday. It was some disciplined bowling by the hosts which helped them garner an impressive 104 run win as Jofra Archer picked three wickets while conceding 27 runs from seven overs while Liam Plunkett and Ben Stokes also supported him by bagging a couple of wickets each as the trio dismantled the Protean middle order. Chasing the target, South Africa openers de Kock and Hashim Amla (13 off 23) started cautiously, putting 10 runs on board in the initial three overs before the latter was hit by a Archer delivery in the fourth over and had to depart. Aiden Markram (11 off 12) then added 26 runs with de Kock before departing as Archer's delivery took a thick edge and Joe Root made no mistake in collecting it at the slips. Archer again jolted the Proteans as he packed back skipper Faf du Plessis (5 off 7) in the 10th over, leaving the visitors at 44/2.
Rahul’s ton at number four ‘positive’: Kohli CARDIFF (ENGLAND): India skipper Virat Kohli heaped praise on K.L. Rahul who struck a brilliant century against Bangladesh in the second warm-up game, saying his form was the “biggest positive” India would take into their first match of the World Cup against South Africa on June 5. On Tuesday, Rahul scored 108 runs, which included 12 fours and 4 sixes during the course of his 99-ball inning, as India defeated Bangladesh by 95 runs at the Sophia Gardens. BCCI chief selector MSK Prasad had nominated Vijay Shankar for the no. 4 spot. —IANS
ENGLAND 311/8 (Ben Stokes 89, Eoin Morgan 57; Lungi Ngidi /66) beat SOUTH AFRICA 207 all out (Quinton de Kock 68, Rassie van der Dussen 50; Jofra Archer 3/27) by 104 runs
It was a stunning one-handed catch from Ben Stokes that stole the limelight on the opening day. (Photo: ICC)
De Kock and Dussen then anchored South Africa's innings with a crucial 85-run partnership, taking their side past the threedigit mark in 20.1 overs. Breaking up the developing partnership, Plunkett came with a major breakthrough in the 23rd over as he sent back a well-settled de Kock when South Africa were at 129. With the addition of just 13 runs, South Africa lost Jean-Paul Duminy (8 off 11) and things
turned worst for them when incoming batsman Dwaine Pretorius also departed after contributing with a run. South Africa then suffered a middle-order collapse as Dussen, Andile Phehlukwayo (24 off 25), and Kagiso Rabada (11 off 19) also fell. South Africa could only manage another 79 runs in 39.4 overs even as Amla returned to the middle but couldn't do much as he too departed on individual score of 13 runs.
Ben Stokes then performed the last rites as he accounted for the wicket of Imran Tahir (0). Earlier, failure of the England batsmen to convert starts saw them post 311/8. Riding on fifties from Jason Roy (54), Root (51), Eoin Morgan (57) and Stokes (89), the hosts ensured that the failures of Jonny Bairstow and Jos Buttler didn't hurt them too much. The South African bowlers though put on a quality show in the second
half of the innings to claw their way back into the game. Winning the toss, South Africa skipper du Plessis decided to bowl and legspinner Imran Tahir reposed the faith shown in him by his skipper as he sent back Bairstow off the second ball of the opening over. The first spinner to open the bowling in the history of the World Cup, Tahir used the googly to great effect as he took the edge of the bat and de Kock did the rest. The early dismissal of Bairstow (0) brought Root to the crease and with Roy for company, the Englishmen started to stitch a partnership. Not just focusing on the boundaries, both Roy and Root looked to keep the scoreboard ticking as they reached 60/1 in the first 10 overs. Putting on a quality 100-run partnership, it looked like the duo would run away with the game when Phehlukwayo dismissed Roy against the run of play, caught by du Plessis.
Dhoni’s warm-up ton the lucky charm Kohli needs IANS, NEW DELHI
I
t was a vintage Dhoni on display against Bangladesh in the second warm-up game as he scored a brilliant hundred and helped India register a morale-boosting 95run win at the Sophia Gardens before the World Cup opener. On Tuesday, Dhoni, who came into bat when India were in a spot with 102/4, smashed a 78-ball 113, which contained seven sixes and helped his team post a gigantic 359/7. It was only poetic justice that he brought up his 100 with a six in
the 49th over of the innings as skipper Kohli cheered on from the dressing room with teammates for company. The 37-year-old also shared a crucial 164-run partnership with K.L. Rahul (108) and made sure that the Men in Blue did not suffer from yet another embarrassing batting collapse like they did against New Zealand. However, Dhoni’s century in Cardiff might prove to be the lucky charm which Virat Kohli needs to win the coveted World Cup trophy. In 2011, Dhoni, who was captaining the side in the World Cup,

had scored a century in the warmup game against New Zealand. He had scored 108* off just 64 balls (11 fours, 3 sixes) and helped India post 360/5 on February 16 in Chennai.
The Men in Blue had won that match by 117 runs and eventually raised the Cup defeating Sri Lanka in the finals at the Wankhede in Mumbai.

When Actor Nana Patekar Gave Wings To A Boy’s Dream! BY AASHU PATEL LOS ANGELES, CA- We all dream. Only a few of us have the courage to follow our dreams. Only a handful of us, have the support we need to pursue our dreams. The story of Mann Bipin, a young Indian drummer who leaped up to the hallways of fame is heart-touching. A young boy hailing from a middle-class family in India made a name for himself internationally because of his talent and the support of a successful person who believed in his talent. Celebrated Indian actor Nana Patekar, brought about a turning point in Mann’s life. Mann who is currently based in Los Angeles started drumming from the young of two. He was commended for his speed, power, style, and grove and soon he won the hearts of people. In India, his father had a band called “The Beaterzz.” Mann played as the lead in this band and became known for it. When he was eleven, he began his education in drumming from Mr. Pankaj Sharma and went on to graduate from the Musicians Institute in Los Angeles. One day, as Mann was performing, Indian actor Nana Patekar saw him and was impressed. Patekar told his manager and Mann’s father Mr. Bipin Chunawala, “Mark my words, your son is going to be a star.” Patekar did not just stop at appreciation. He sponsored Mann’s education at the Musicians Institute - the institute that has been instrumental in making Mann the musician he is today. At the Musicians Institute, Mann was awarded as “The Best Player of the Year” in the very first year of his education at the institute. He played for renowned Jazz guitarist Marcus Miller and for Lars Deutsch (Emmy Award winner and Oscar-nominated film score composer) with pop artist Paloma Rush. He also played with Phrimaphaa Khornrojjachawin (nokphrima) who has multiple awards to his name like the KPN Award (2009) in Thailand,

the Best Singer award in the R&B genre at the World Championship of Performing Arts 2016, the second prize at the International Festival White Night of Saint Petersburg, and with May Patcharapong, who is an internationally acclaimed bass player at the popular Saxophone pub in Thailand. B SMART about Hepatitis BPregnancy and Vaccination
BY ASIA HUMAN SERVICES CHICAGO, IL: Are you pregnant? You may be at risk of passing on Hepatitis B to your child. One way the disease is transmitted is through birth, mother to child. Therefore, while Hepatitis B screening and vaccination is important for everyone, these precautions are even more necessary for pregnant women to protect their children. Hepatitis B, a serious liver disease, can also be transmitted through blood and other bodily fluids. About 1 in 3 people worldwide (two billion) have had the infection in their life. Many do not realize they have it, but it is still damaging their livers. The liver is a key body organ, performing hundreds of vital functions, from clearing waste to absorbing nutrients. Hepatitis B can permanently damage the liver, even leading to liver cancer or failure. Even without outward symptoms, a
Indian Origin Man Charged with Possession of Child Porn
simple blood test can tell whether you have hepatitis B. Based on this test, the health provider will tell you whether you should seek treatment, get vaccinated, or are already immune. Hepatitis B can be either acute or, if it last for more than 6 months, chronic. Chronic hepatitis B cannot be cured, but only managed to prevent liver damage. Only about 10% of adults develop chronic hepatitis B while 50% of children and 90% of infants do. Therefore, if you are pregnant, it is very important to get screened and vaccinate your children, so they do not get chronic hepatitis B. Hepatitis B is easily preventable and treatable. Don’t risk your child’s health!

BY A STAFF WRITER BELCAMP, MD- Police have arrested a Harford County man Wednesday on charges of possessing child pornography following a roughly threemonth investigation. Sandeep M. Patel, 29, of the 1300 block of Cranesbill Court in Belcamp, is charged with eight counts of possession of child pornography. Patel was arrested at his residence without incident and taken to the Maryland State Police Bel Air Barrack for processing, according to a state police news release. In February, detectives from the Baltimore County Police Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force began an online investigation involving the possession of child pornography. Detectives discovered a person online actively pursuing child pornography files, and traced it to an address in Harford County. In April, the case was transferred to an investigator assigned to the Maryland State Police Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force. At approximately 6 a.m. Wednesday, Maryland State Police, assisted by Homeland Security Investigations, served a search warrant at the identified address. During the search, a preliminary forensic review of Patel’s electronic devices revealed multiple child pornography files, police said.
