IANS, NEW YORK
even Indian-origin kids, along with an American, have been declared co-champions of the US National Spelling Bee after the tie among the eight couldn’t be broken even after 20 rounds of the finals. The unprecedented decision to declare eight co-champions was taken last week after the organizers ran out of their selection of difficult words to challenge them further. The 10-year monopoly of Indian-origin children was finally broken with a non-Indian girl from Alabama, Erin Howard, becoming a co-champion.
The seven Indian-origin winners (with the final word they spelled correctly in parenthesis) are Rishik Gandhasri (auslaut), Saketh Sundar (bougainvillea), Shruthika Padhy (aiguillette), Sohum Sukhatankar (pendeloque), Abhijay Kodali (palama), Christopher Serrao (cernuous) and Rohan Raja (odylic). The winners, who will each get $50,000 and a trophy, were the last ones standing from among the 562 contestants drawn from across the US and abroad. In the past only two co-winners were declared - most recently Indians in 2014, 2015 and 2016 -

ashington and London had the “greatest alliance the world has ever known” said US President Donald Trump at a joint news conference with outgoing British Prime Minister Theresa May earlier this week. The press conference followed talks between Trump and May at 10 Downing Street. May said they had a “great relationship” that they should “build on”, the BBC reported. Amid the Trump-May talks, protesters gathered in central London to voice their opposition to the US President’s visit. Opposition Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn urged the US President to “think on about peace” as he addressed protesters in Westminster. nature and history of trade negotiations between the two countries”. The trade war between the world’s two largest economies worsened after Trump in May accused Beijing of reneging on its promises and slapped additional tariffs on the Chinese goods worth $200 billion. China accused Washington of being “solely” responsible for the scuttling of talks. No official trade talks have been scheduled since the last round ended in May. Special stature granted to Shah
According to the new list of Cabinet Committees, the Prime Minister is heading six Committees, while Home Minister Amit Shah is heading two Committees and is part of all the eight Committees IANS, NEW DELHI
P
rime Minister Narendra Modi has reconstituted the Cabinet Committees, in an exercise which reflects the special stature granted to Home Minister Amit Shah, who has been made part of all the eight panels while BJP veteran and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is a member of only two. During the Modi government’s first term, the then Defence Minister was the member of three out of six Committees -- the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs and the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS). However, in the present NDA government, the Defence Minister
Modi, Xi to meet next week at SCO summit BEIJING: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will meet Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) meet in Bishkek, India’s envoy to China Vikram Misri said on Thursday. This will be Modi’s first meeting with Xi after being re-elected as Prime Minister following his party’s stunning victory in general elections last month. The two leaders are likely to take stock of the bilateral ties and discuss regional and international issues. “In recent years, India and China have been able to build a very mature and stable relationship. The informal summit between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping in Wuhan last year was a milestone and has been instrumental in taking our relations to a new height,” Misri said. “It is worth mentioning that last year, our leaders met four times on the sidelines of different multi-lateral meetings. Next week, they are again meeting in Bishkek on the sidelines of SCO Summit,” the envoy said at the inauguration of Synthite’s third plant at Wucheng in China’s Shandong’s province. Synthite, an Indian extraction company which has made deep forays into the Chinese market, already has two plants -- in Xinjiang and Beijing. Besides Xi, Modi will also have a one-on-one with Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin at the twoday summit beginning in Kyrgyzstan from June 13. Modi will not meet Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan at the event. —IANS
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, which makes appointments to key positions, consists of only PM Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah.
is in the CCEA and CCS and not in the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs, which decides on political matters.
Significantly, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, which makes appointments to key positions like CVC and CBI Director,
consists of only Modi and Shah. Among the eight committees, two are new ones which will oversee investment and employment. According to the new list of Cabinet Committees, the Prime Minister is heading six Committees, while Home Minister Amit Shah is heading two Committees and is part of all the eight Committees. Shah heads two Committees -Cabinet Committee on Accommodation and Cabinet Committee on Parliamentary Affairs. The Prime Minister heads the Appointments Committee, CCEA, Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs, CCS, Cabinet Committee on Investment and Growth and the Cabinet Committee on Employment and Skill Development.
Union Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is also part of seven Committees. She is part of Cabinet Committee on Accommodation, CCEA, Cabinet Committee on Parliamentary Affairs, Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs, CCS, Cabinet Committee on Investment and Growth and the Cabinet Committee on Employment and Skill Development. Union Road Transport and Highway Minister Nitin Gadkari is also part of three Committees. Gadkari is part of two Committees as its members in the Cabinet Committee on Investment and Growth and CCEA. He is special invitee in Cabinet Committee on Employment and Skill Development.
RBI turns accommodative to boost growth IANS, MUMBAI
H
ome and auto loans are set to become cheaper as the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) went for a hat-trick of rate cut on Thursday by lowering key lending rate for commercial banks by 25 basis points (bps) to 5.75 per cent, the lowest in the past nine years. This is the third reduction in repo rate in 2019. The RBI in April lowered its key lending rate by 25 bps to 6 per cent. Before that, in February, the MPC had voted to lower the repo rate by 25 bps to 6.25 per cent. Besides, the RBI changed the monetary policy stance from neutral to accommodative. The significance of the move can be gauged from the fact that the RBI has reduced its

growth forecast from 7.2 per cent to 7 per cent in 2019-20. RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das said the central bank would ensure that the transmission of the reduced
repo rate was faster and higher. In the absence of complete transmission of lower lending rates, consumers pay higher EMIs and the corporates’ repayment bur-
den also remains high. The decision to reduce the repo rate was taken by the RBI’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) at its second monetary policy review of the ongoing fiscal. As per the monetary policy statement, the main considerations behind the MPC’s decision were decline in private final consumption expenditure (PFCE) and moderation in exports. At present, high interest rates and liquidity constraints have demoralised auto, home and capital goods buyers. Even the high frequency indicators suggest moderation in activity in the service sector. Accordingly, a lower repo for commercial banks, will reduce interest cost on automobile and home loans, thereby ushering in growth.
Pakistan Foreign Secretary prays at Jama Masjid IANS, NEW DELHI
A
mid tension between New Delhi and Islamabad after Pulwama terror attack and the subsequent air strike in Balakot, Pakistan Foreign Secretary Sohail Mahmood on Wednesday offered Eid prayers at the 17th century Jama Masjid here, diplomatic sources said. Mahmood, who arrived here on Tuesday night on a three-day private visit to India, is scheduled to return to Pakistan with his family on Friday, the sources said. Mahmood took part in the Eid
prayers with his children who study in Delhi. Mahmood was Pakistan’s High Commissioner in India before taking charge as Foreign Secretary in April this year. He then had said that Pakistan was hoping for “re-engagement” with India after the Lok Sabha polls which were concluded on May 23. Mahmood had emphasized on “sustained engagements and structured dialogue” as only option to understand mutual concerns and ensure peace, prosperity and security between the two countries.

His visit, even though private, is seen as new initiative from Pakistan to resolve the issues between the regions, but it was not yet clear if he would be meeting political leaders in Delhi. The Modi government is clear that terror and talks can not go together. However, an initiative from Pak-
istan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan wishing Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the electoral victory of Bharatiya Janata Party was seen as a positive step for the ties between the two countries which dipped to a new low after a ghastly terror attack in Kashmir’s Pulwama in which 40 CRPF personnel were killed on February 14.

Innovation holds the key to India’s job crisis
The renewed mandate should be used by the Modi regime to liberate the country from the malaise of corruption. (Photo: IANS)
India needs to work upon strengthening of industry-academia linkages
Modi 2.0: India needs security, development Masses understood two basic needs of citizens — economic improvement and security against external threats D.C. PATHAK, NEW DELHI
T
he sweeping victory of Narendra Modi and his party in this General Election - that went far beyond any conventional poll arithmetic - was transformational in the sense that for the first time the Indians at the grass roots level believed that the promise made by a leadership earlier had been sincerely pursued by it. Prime Minister Modi had post- 2014 called for ‘sabka saath sabka vikas’ and declared that he would put the ‘nation first’ in handling the issues of governance. The development schemes that he announced aimed at benefiting the common man regardless of rural-urban distinctions and what is truly modernistic - using the power of technology as a great equalizer. In a long time Indian masses understood the two basic needs of citizens in a democracy - economic improvement and security against external and internal threats - and felt reasonably assured that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was selflessly geared to working for both. Now that the Modi regime is in place, it would do the Prime Minister good if he straightaway got down to completing what he had
set out to do - and reassemble a team that worked on his missionoriented grid. The kind of majority Modi is now presiding over would not allow much room for ambiguity in policy making or flaws in the execution of development projects. Further, our defense forces have to have a seamless liaison with the paramilitary that protected the country from the enemy operating on our own soil.
Article 355 is there to deal with an exceptional situation where the state government was just not able to control political violence In an overall perspective, five areas stand out for organized and sustained action by the new government. First, Prime Minister Narendra Modi owed his 2014 victory to the expectations of the people that he would deliver a death blow to big time corruption indulged in by leaders in public life - almost always with the collusion of bureaucrats or public servants. The renewed mandate should be used by the Modi regime to chase
out the corrupt wherever they are and liberate the country from the malaise of corruption. Secondly, the law and order situation in India has remained unsatisfactory in recent years. The spread of political violence in some states has tended to affect the play of democracy during and outside of the election period. The Centre has no reason to remain uninvolved. Article 355 of the Constitution is there to deal with an exceptional situation where the state government was just not able to control political violence. The third crucial area of governance relates to the delivery of development projects in time whether they belonged to the Centre, state or the local bodies. Fourth is the handling of the challenge relating to the condition of ordinary farmers. The farmer must get the market price of whatever he had produced. Politicians only think of a system of ‘doles’ for farmers which does not help. Finally, the long range solution of the problems of education and health must be found on an urgent footing - these should be declared as areas of strategic importance at par with Defense and Internal Security to provide for an effective oversight of the Centre on them.
The country needs to enhance its competitiveness, that is its productivity levels, to overcome such a limitation. (Photo: IANS) AMIT KAPOOR, NEW DELHI
I
ndia’s unemployment rate at 6.1 per cent of the total labor force during 2017-18 is at a 45-year high. But the trend of joblessness is not something new for the Indian economy. It has been a long-standing reality for the country due to its factor driven (labor arbitrage) pattern of growth. Even during the high-growth years between 2004 and 2009 - India’s historical best in terms of growth only a million jobs were created in the entire five-year period when more than a million jobs were needed each year, as per a study conducted by the Planning Commission. So, the Indian economy has a structural reason for its lack of a job-creating capacity. The country needs to enhance its competitiveness, that is its productivity levels, to overcome such a limitation. Both US and China have become economic superpowers by working along similar lines. If the country can develop a competitive advantage over other nations through innovation, it becomes difficult to be upstaged by another economy on the world stage. But India’s innovation policies have a series of challenges that it needs to address first. The first issue that India needs to work upon is the strengthening of its industryacademia linkages. There are two specific roles that universities are intended to play knowledge creation and knowledge transfer. In India, the latter is often overlooked.
The Indian government can possibly address this issue by providing a platform for collaboration between industry and academia that would foster greater knowledge creation and dissemination. The second challenge in India’s approach towards innovation arises from its low investment in research and development. India’s R&D expenditure is low not only compared to the mature economies but also compared to emerging economies. India invests 0.67 per cent of GED in R&D while mature economies like US, Japan etc invest around 3 per cent of their
India’s R&D expenditure is low not only compared to the mature economies but also compared to emerging economies GED. The impact of this low investment in research and development is quite evident in the lack of world class R&D infrastructure facilities in India. The third challenge lies in the country’s IPA regime. The two main aspects of India’s IPA regime that are at the core of conflict between the government and the industry are: Section 3(d) of the Patents (Amendment) Act of 2005 and the propensity to grant compulsory licenses. It is important for the Indian government and the industry to chalk out a plan of action that will be beneficial for both the innovators as well as the general public.

Asiya linked directly with ISI

I
ntensive questioning of Kashmiri separatist leader Asiya Andrabi reveals that she came in close contact with Lashkare-Taiba kingpin Hafeez Saaed through a serving Pakistan Army officer. The officer happens to be a relative of Andrabi, the leader of Dukhtaran-e-Millat, presently being interrogated by National Investigation Agency (NIA) along with two other separatist leaders. A science graduate from Kashmir University, she hit the news headlines when she unfurled a Pakistan flag and recited the Pakistani anthem in Srinagar four years ago. The brain behind this brazen act of Andriba was of Hafiz Saeed. Sources in the NIA said that Andrabi’s nephew is a captain rank
China launches rocket from sea BEIJING: In a first, China on Wednesday successfully launched a rocket from a sailing ship into space, showcasing its prowess in the field. A Long March-11 solid propellant carrier rocket blasted off at 12.06 p.m. from the mobile platform in the Yellow Sea off Shandong Province, Chinese news agency Xinhua reported. It is China’s first space launch from a sea-based platform and the 306th mission of the Long March carrier rocket series, the stateowned news outlet said. officer in the Pakistan Army. Her other close relatives are also having links with Pakistan Army and its intelligence agency ISI. Andriba also has relatives in Dubai and Saudi Arabia through whom she
received regular funds used for subversive activities against India. The case (RC-10/2017) registered by the NIA against Andrabi suggests that Saeed, the Amir of Jamaat-ud-Dawa and mastermind
behind terror outfit Lashkar-eTaiba, was funding her for aggravating the law and order situation in the valley. Intelligence inputs reveal that hawala operators linked with Lashkar operatives in Saudi Arabia and Lahore played a key role in providing a cash flow to Andriba. The money was distributed to stone-pelters and supporters of Hurriyat who organized violent protests against the government in Srinagar and other parts of the valley. Sources said that besides Andrabi, separatist leaders Shabir Shah and Masarat Alam are also being interrogated by the NIA sleuths. The three separatists, currently lodged in Tihar Jail, faced an investigation conducted by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the
NIA for receiving funds and conniving with terrorists of organisations such as Hizbul Mujahideen and the Lashkar. The case is personally being monitored by National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, who spearheads the Centre’s strategy in the Valley on the terror front. In its charge sheet last year, the NIA has revealed separatist leaders received money from an ISI operator. The operator had been close to officials in the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi and was also linked with a source in Dubai. The money trail from across the border is now being investigated by the ED. The ED also has ample evidence against the separatist leaders who received funds from the ISI to create chaos in the Valley.

fghanistan President Ashraf Ghani said that he will visit Pakistan on June 27 in an effort to improve bilateral relations that are often hampered by mistrust and reciprocal accusations. In his message to mark Eid-ul-Fitr, Ghani said he agreed to visit Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan after he met him last week on the sidelines of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation meeting in Saudi Arabia, Tolo News reported.
“I hope the visit will be positive,” he said. The Afghan leader said that though he had a productive meeting with Khan in Saudi Arabia, there was still a need of practical steps. “‘Introductory’ meetings are not required, there should be practical meetings.” Kabul has accused Pakistan of harbouring Taliban militants who launch attacks inside Afghanistan, but Ghani said he was hopeful that years of mistrust can be replaced by mutual trust and cooperation

“Prime Minister Imran Khan reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to a peaceful and stable Afghanistan. He also underlined Pakistan’s firm support for an Afghan-led and Afghanowned peace process for political solution in Afghanistan,.
Search on for 8 missing climbers in Nanda Devi peak IANS, NEW DELHI/LONDON
A
search is underway for seven climbers — four Britons, two Americans and an Australian — and their Indian liaison officer, who went missing a week ago during an expedition to the Nanda Devi peak in Uttarakhand, CNN reported on Sunday citing local authorities. The group was attempting to scale Nanda Devi East, one of the highest and most difficult to climb peaks in India at just over 24,000 feet tall, Uttarakhand District Magistrate, Vijay Kumar Jogdande, told CNN. The missing eight were part of a larger team of 12, who set off from the village of Munsiyari on May

13. But 12 days later, on May 25, only four of the group returned to base camp, said Uttarakhand’s
Senior District Official, R.D. Paliwal, said the report. The entire group was supposed
to reach its base camp on May 26, according to Jogdande. The base camp is located at 19,685 feet above sea level. According to CNN, the company which arranged the expedition, Himalayan Run & Trek, waited a few days after the remaining members of the team failed to arrive before alerting authorities of their disappearance on May 31, Jogdande said. The missing Indian liaison officer is from the Indian Mountaineering Foundation, based in New Delhi. The UK Foreign Office said in a statement it was in contact with Indian authorities following reports that the climbers were missing. Australia’s Department of For-
eign Affairs and Trade also said it was “providing consular assistance to the family of an Australian that may be among a group of trekkers missing in the Nanda Devi area of India”. Meanwhile three search teams have reached the first base camp, which is 25 km below the peak. Another team, equipped with medical and civil supplies, was said to be on its way. A military aircraft was also expected to be sent to help with the rescue effort. It was unclear whether the climbers went missing during their ascent or descent, or the cause of their disappearance, CNN said. The incident follows the deaths of 11 climbers on Mount Everest this year.

ramila Jayapal, a Democrat from Washington DC, has become the first South Asian American woman to preside over the US House of Representatives. Jayapal, who was first elected to the Congress in 2016, tweeted she was “beyond proud” to preside over the House and serve in the most diverse Congress in the nation’s history. The Indian American Congresswoman also shared a clip of Tuesday’s session where she was seen presiding over the House as a temporary Speaker. House Democrats rotate for the ceremo-
nial position of presiding over the chamber. “Today, I became the first South Asian American woman to preside over the US House of Representatives. Beyond proud to serve in the most diverse Congress in our nation’s history and to hold the gavel today,” Jayapal tweeted. The 116th Congress broke records with women and lawmakers crossing racial and religious barriers, including an all time high for Asian American lawmakers. A record number of 17 Asian Americans serve in Congress, with 14 in the House and three in the Senate.
7 Indian-origin kids named US Spelling Bee champs IANS, NEW YORK
S
even Indian-origin kids, along with an American, have been declared co-champions of the US National Spelling Bee after the tie among the eight couldn’t be broken even after 20 rounds of the finals.
In the past only two co-winners were declared - most recently Indians in 2014, 2015 and 2016 -

major sports event and a big audience. The contest is sponsored by the media company, EW Scripps. The Spelling Bee is open to students in eighth grade and below.
DUBAI: UAE-based Malayalis have expressed concern for their loved ones back home, as a Kerala youth tested positive for the Nipah virus, leading to a number of traders and travellers taking precautionary measures, the media reported. Besides a Kerala youth being treated for testing positive for the Nipah virus (NiV), state Health Minister K.K. Shailaja on Wednesday revealed that three nurses who treated him, a friend and another person have been kept in isolation. A total of 311 people from Thrissur, Paravur in Ernakulam district, and Thodupuzha in Idukki were also under observation. Sharjah resident Sridevi Rajendran, who is from the same town as the infected victim, told the Khaleej Times: “He was in the same school as my son. We are very worried about the situation back home, and my son is there as well. Since there is no clarity as to where the virus has originated, people are generally tensed.” The Nipah virus is transmitted from animals to humans; through contaminated food; or directly between people. It infects a wide range of animals and causes severe disease and death in people, making it a public health concern, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
Jaishankar follows Sushma in Twitter response to Indians IANS, NEW DELHI
E
xternal Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has begun continuing his predecessor Sushma Swaraj’s practice of being active on Twitter to address the problems of Indians abroad. Sushma Swaraj, during her tenure, was known for her instant response on any request for Indians posted on her Twitter handle, especially from those in distress in foreign lands. Jaishankar, who took charge last week, had then tweeted that he was “proud to follow the footsteps” of Sushma Swaraj. “My first tweet. Thank you all

maSwaraj ji. “We at Team @MEAIndia continue to be at your service 24x7.
Happy to be leading the effort with my colleague MoS Muraleedharan ji @VMBJP,” he had posted. As Indians abroad raised their problems, Jaishankar asked the nearest Indian mission concerned to help. As a woman on family trip to Germany and Italy reported her family members’ passports have been stolen, Jaishankar replied the Indian Embassy in Rome and the Consul-General in Munich will extend their full support to the family, and marked the respective Indian missions. To Vineet Nair who stated that he and others have been trapped in Oman, Jaishankar replied: “Our
Embassy in Oman is trying to resolve this. Please continue to stay in touch with them @IndEmb_Muscat.” A 1977-batch IFS officer, Jaishankar served as Foreign Secretary from 2015 to 2018 before succeeding Sushma Swaraj in the second Narendra Modi government. Considered to be an expert on China and US, his appointment is expected to bring into play his vast experience in managing foreign affairs. According to Jaishankar's former colleagues, it is the first time in the history of the Indian Foreign Service (IFS) that a retired Foreign Secretary has been directly made Foreign Minister.

Telangana: Congress cries ‘murder of democracy’ NEW DELHI: Hours after 12 out of its 18 MLAs in Telangana met the Assembly Speaker requesting a merger with the Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS), the Congress on Thursday described the development as a “daylight murder of democracy”. Addressing a press conference at the party headquarters here, Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera said: “The way the people’s mandate and democratic norms are being butchered, it’s a daylight murder of democracy.” “Just because somebody is in power, has access to resources and can control agencies does not mean he can misuse his power,” Khera said. “These Congress MLAs were elected after the voters rejected the TRS. This is the murder of people’s mandate. India may ignore it today, but it will never forget disrespect of mandate,” he said. Under the Anti-Defection Act, defectors need a two-third majority to seek merger with any party. Of the total 19 Congress MLAs in the Telangana Assembly, 12 have shifted loyalty to the ruling TRS. The development came a day after Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) chief N. Uttam Kumar Reddy resigned from the Assembly after he was elected to the Lok Sabha from Nalgonda in the
after. The preliminary findings of these five, do not point to anything serious, but, we will wait till the final results come,” said Shailaja. It was on Tuesday that the youth tested positive and since then the state Health Department has
recent elections. This brought down Congress’ strength to 18 and the defectors required 12 MLAs to seek Congress Legislature Party’s (CLP) merger with the TRS. Earlier the CLP in the state Legislative Council merged with the TRS in a similar manner. If this happens in the Assembly too, the Congress will lose the status of state’s main Opposition party. A party needs one-tenth of the strength of a House to have the main opposition status. The TRS won 88 out of the 119 seats in last year’s Assembly elections. Hrithik shines in ‘Super 30’ trailer Actors Aditya Srivastava and Pankaj Tripathi also find prominent space in the trailer IANS, MUMBAI
N
ot all superheroes wear capes... Some hold chalks and books. A glimpse of the Super 30 trailer shows how Hrithik Roshanhas slipped into the role of Patnabased mathematician Anand Kumar, who helps fulfil the dreams of a group of underprivileged children to become engineers and scientists. “Raja ka beta raja nahi banega. Raja woh hi banega, jo haqdaar hoga,” Hrithik says in a heavy voice in the trailer. He sheds light on the prevailing issue of class disparity in the Indian education system and how deserving students sometimes end up losing opportunities.
BRIEFS Singer Ruma Guha Thakurta dead KOLKATA: Celebrated Bengali singer-actress Ruma Guha Thakurta died at her residence here on Monday following old age related problems, family Ruma G Thakurta sources said. She was 84. Founder of the Calcutta Youth Choir (CYC), which played a stellar role in popularizing gana sangeet or mass songs in Bengal, she showcased her talent in a number of Hindi and Bengali movies working with celebrated directors like Satyajit Ray, Tapan Sinha and Tarun Majumdar.
Deepika wraps up her film ‘Chhapaak’ MUMBAI: Actress Deepika Padukone has completed the shooting for her upcoming film Chhapaak, based on the life of an acid attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal. Deepika took to social media and wrote: “It’s a wrap on the most precious film of my career. ‘Chhapaak’.” The cast and crew has posed for a memorable group photograph, which Deepika shared along with her post. Her husband and actor Ranveer Singh shared his excitement for the film: “Can’t wait to witness the magic.” Directed by Meghna Gulzar, the film will release on January 10, 2020. It also stars actor Vikrant Massey. Chhapaak has been mainly shot in Delhi and Mumbai. —IANS

The trailer of Super 30, produced by Reliance Entertainment, has launched. From being a tuition teacher at a coaching centre for VIP students
to leaving the lucrative job and starting his own coaching centre and teaching underprivileged students for free, Hrithik -- as Anand Kumar -- is seen fighting to bring a
change in the education system. In the two-minute trailer, the 45year-old actor is mostly seen wearing loose shirts and pants. The trailer promises strong dialogues and storyline, but Hrithik, who has gone de-glam for the role, seems to struggle with getting the Bihari accent right. Actors Aditya Srivastava and Pankaj Tripathi also find prominent space in the trailer. Hrithik, who has played a superhero in the Krrish series, took to Twitter to unveil the trailer: “It’s the ideas that make a nation. It’s the people who empower it. Presenting one such story from the heartland of India.” Queen director Vikas Bahl has helmed the film, which also features actress Mrunal Thakur. It will
release on July 12, after shifting its date two times. Earlier, Super 30 was to release on January 25, the same date as Kangana’s Manikarnika: The Queen Of Jhansi. But “Super 30” did not see the light of the day on that date due to pending production work after director Bahl was named in the #MeToo movement. Later, it was fixed for July 26, ending up in a clash with Kangana’s Mental Hai Kya, but Hrithik did not want a “media circus”. Just a few days ago, Vikas was given a clean chit by the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) of Reliance Entertainment which probed an allegation of sexual harassment made against him by a former employee of the now disbanded Phantom Films.
‘Fans in China very keen on Indian films’ IANS, MUMBAI
A
ctress Yami Gautam, who is back after a visit to China for the premiere of her film “Kaabil”, says she was surprised and overwhelmed to see the level of interest in Indian cinema in that country. China has emerged as a huge foreign market for Indian films over the years. Yami and Hrithik were in Beijing for the film’s premiere and experienced fans’ love first hand.
Yami told IANS: “I had only read and heard about the genuine love in China people had for our films. To be there and experience it in person was both joyous and overwhelming, both in the best ways possible. Fans there are hugely interested in the films, they know everything about us as actors, our work, our films, our songs... everything. And that wasn’t something I expected.” The overwhelming part of the visit was to see the absolute craze and the warmth of the fans.

“People sang songs for us despite the language barrier and the love they showered.... They actually came to meet us with gifts, having followed us on social media and keeping a track of what we like in real life. The intimacy with which
they know about us was surprising and very heart-warming,” she added. On the work front, Yami has been busy shooting for Bala, in which she is working with Ayushmann Khurrana.
‘Bharat’ a flawed but monumental achievement
I
t’s easy to be dismissive of a film that has no formal structure, one which doesn’t compartmentalise life’s flow but chooses to go with it. The flow, I mean. But then again, it takes almost three hours of playing time for us to realize that “Bharat” is no small achievement. Like Sultan before this, Director Ali Abbas Zafar doesn’t hesitate in blowing open Salman Khan’s image of the Superstar who always plays variations of himself. In some of the sequences in this episodic endearing oddball off a film Salman invests genuine emotions. Watch him closely in the sequence where he is reunited with his sister whom he has lost in the tumult of India’s Partition in two badly divided halves. Salman achieves great heights of emotionalism in that beautifully written

chunk of cinema. Of course it helps that Tabu plays his sister in that highly emotional sequence. Tabu can bring out the best in anyone. The rest of this interesting often brilliant but uneven film is not as articulate as one would like it to be.
Much of the adventures that Bharat and his faithful sidekick Vilayati (Sunil Grover, funny and engaging) go through seem strangely incongruous: shrill notes of a symphony that never quite reaches a crescendo. The journey seems to have plenty of genuine emotions. But the sleeping dogs are aplenty. That entire oil-rigging episode seems rigged and thoroughly undercooked. Why take the protagonist’s journey into such a distance where it becomes difficult to tell what he was looking for in the first place? Some moments meant to be the acme of
hilarity just fall flat writhing on the ground. For example the way Bharat pacifies Somalian pirates on board a ship (don’t ask what he’s doing there) with Amitabh Bachchan songs is embarrassing in its out-oftune humour. It’s commendable that this oneman show (with some surprising room made for two other characters played by Sunil Grover and Katrina Kaif) actually takes a pause to honour men from Indian history like Jawaharlal Nehru, Sachin Tendulkar, Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan and, ahem, Manmohan Singh who at time when the Congress I is rendered nulled, is praised for his economic reforms. Watching “Bharat” I felt a strange stirring of hope and joy. The film spreads a sunshine across its tapestried universe. —Subhash K. Jha

AB de Villiers had offered to play WC JOHANNESBURG: Former South Africa batsman AB de Villiers had offered to come out of retirement for the ongoing World Cup, but AB de Villiers it was turned down by Cricket South Africa. According to a report in ESPNcricinfo, the offer was made by de Villiers in May, just a day before South Africa selectors announced their final 15-member squad for the prestigious quadrennial event. However, South Africa team management declined the offer with a thinking that a recall would, among other things, be unfair to the squad that had been together for the past year since de Villiers announced his retirement. There were two main reasons why the team management decided not to accept de Villiers’ offer. First, he had retired in May 2018, exactly a year before the World Cup was scheduled and, therefore, he did not fulfil the selection criteria, which included playing South African domestic cricket or international cricket in the intervening months. Secondly, it was also felt that recalling the 35-year-old would be unfair on the players who had been performing in his absence. Fakhar Zaman (36 off 40) and Imam-Ul-Haq (44 off 58) put up an opening stand of 82 runs before Moeen drew the former out of his crease in the 15th over with a delivery that drifted in from around the wicket. The turn took the ball past the batsman and wicket-keeper Buttler took the bails off in a flash.Moeen then dismissed Imam six overs later, thanks to a brilliant catch by Woakes. After his dismissal, there were no significant partnerships as they fell two short of the 350-run mark.

se menstrual cups, biodegradable sanitary napkins or organic tampons to ensure you are environment-friendly during menstruation, suggest experts. Anupriya Kapur, Founder, Imbue and Deep Bajaj, Founder of PeeBuddy and Sirona, have shared some tips that can help you remain hygienic during periods. Biodegradable sanitary napkins: Use biodegradable or cotton sanitary napkins or tampons during menstruation. They are good for your skin and lessen the itchy feeling and rashes. v Switch to a sustainable ecofriendly menstrual hygiene products like a menstrual cup or organic tampons. vagina, try reusable panties/cloth pads. v Don’t dispose your sanitary waste in plastic bags. Instead, wrap it in bio-degradable paper or use Oxodegradable sanitary disposal bags. For your own hygiene:
Switch to cotton underwear: Cotton is a breathable material and absorbs moisture. Try to restrict the number of hours spent in a lacey or satin underwear. Get out of sweaty clothes: Wet or damp clothes multiply the risk of
bacterial infection in the intimate area. Take a shower and change into fresh and dry clothing post gym/working out or post any form of physical activity. If you can’t shower after swimming or working out, at least change out of your bathing suit or sweaty clothes. Don’t forget to change your pad and tampon: With the invention of high-absorbency pads and tampons, it’s easy to forget how important it is to change them regularly. But it’s important to change pad or tampons every three-four hours. Never use two pads simultaneously: Some women who experience heavy flow, tend to use two sanitary pads at one go to control the flow and prevent staining of clothes. This, however, is a bad idea as it can cause infections in the vaginal region. Stick to one and keep changing it often if the flow is more.
Violent video games dangerous for kids IANS, NEW YORK
K
ids exposed to violent video games are more likely to pull the trigger in reallife situations, as compared to those who do not indulge in such gaming habits, researchers have warned. dren aged between 8-12 years who were assigned to play three different versions of the game Minecraft. The first version was violent and required players to kill monsters with guns while the second required players to kill monsters with swords. The third version was non-violent, with no weapons or monsters. After 20 minutes of game-play, the kids played with other toys in another room that included a cabinet with two disabled handguns, said the researchers.

MUMBAI: There is good news for those who are single, but not straight. In a major step towards inclusivity, dating app Tinder has now started allowing users in some countries, including India, to share more information about their sexual orientation on their profile whether they are heterosexual, gay, queer, asexual or bisexual. To add more information about sexual orientation on Tinder, users can simply visit “Edit Info” within the app. After tapping “Orientation,” they will be able to select up to three terms that they feel best describe their sexual orientation. From there, users can also select whether to display their sexual orientation on their profile. The update is in response to user feedback as well as a study conducted by the app, which found that the majority of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender plus other (LGBTQ+) respondents in India were interested in more options or easier ways to express their sexual orientation on dating platforms. The study also found that 73 per cent of Indian LGBTQ+ adults believe online dating and social media have benefited their community positively over the last five years and more than half of the respondents said they have identified as LGBTQ+ online before formally coming out. “At Tinder, we recognize the diversity of our user base and want them to feel empowered to express themselves authentically,” said Taru Kapoor, General Manager-India, Tinder and Match Group.
sliders, cross body bag, tote bag and keep your style quotient high. Are you an adventure junkie and want to stay stylish? Lay your hands on comfortable blue or pink sneakers or white sports shoes paired with shorts, T-shirt, backpack and sunglasses to complete the sporty and chic look. Worried about the body odor? Abdulla Ajmal, Consulting Perfumer at Ajmal Perfumes, tells how to keep the smell away. “Summer perfumes usually are citrus-based that cool the skin and envelope the wearer in fresh uplifting aroma. The summer sun can agitate the fragrance, causing it to evaporate faster rather than sticking to your skin. Thus, it’s ideal to carry your summer fragrance in your bag and keep reapplying throughout the day.

HIV patients at higher CVD risk
The heart disease risk occurs due to interactions between risk factors such as diet, lifestyle and tobacco use IANS, NEW YORK
H
IV patients are at a significantly higher risk of suffering from heart and blood vessel diseases as compared to those without the infection, according to a new scientific statement. In the statement, published in the Circulation journal, the researchers indicated that the heart disease risk among HIV patients occurs due to interactions between traditional risk factors, such as diet, lifestyle and tobacco use; and HIVspecific risk factors, such as a chronically activated immune system and inflammation characteristic of chronic HIV. "Considerable gaps exist in our knowledge about HIV-associated

‘Even 25 cups of coffee a day not bad for heart’ IANS, LONDON
T SYDNEY: Elderly people who take anti-depressants or opioids are more than twice as likely to suffer a fractured hip after a fall, a new study has found. The study, published in Australian Prescriber journal, revealed that the risk of fracturing a hip was significantly higher among those who were taking multiple psychotropic medicines -- mood and consciousaltering medications that are used to treat conditions ranging from depression to dementia, Xinhua news agency reported.
Treatment Advocacy Project. "On average, people living with HIV who are over 60 years old have 3-7 medical conditions, including heart attacks, strokes, heart failure, kidney disease, frailty and bone diseases and many take 12-15 medications daily," Levin added. The researchers insisted that more research is needed for informed decision-making and effective CVD prevention and treatment in the aging population of people living with HIV. "There is a dearth of large-scale clinical trial data on how to prevent cardiovascular diseases in people living with HIV," said Feinstein. The researchers emphasized on the importance of a healthy lifestyle that includes smoking cessation and adequate physical activity.
here is good news for those who like their cup of coffee every morning. Drinking coffee, even up to 25 cups a day, is not as bad for arteries and heart as previously thought, says a study. The researchers found that drinking coffee was not associated with stiffer arteries as previously thought. Arteries carry blood containing oxygen and nutrients from heart to rest of the body. If they become stiff, it increases heart's workload and raises the chance of heart attack or stroke "Despite the popularity of coffee worldwide, different reports could put people off from enjoying it. While we can't prove a causal link in this study, our research indicates coffee isn't as bad for arteries as previ-

ous studies would suggest," said Kenneth Fung, who led the data analysis for the research at the Queen Mary University of London. For the study, involving 8,000
people in Britain, coffee consumption was categorized into three groups. Those who drink less than one cup a day, those who drink between one and three cups and
those who drink more than three. No increased stiffening of arteries was associated with those who drank up to this high limit when compared with those who drank less than one cup a day, said the researchers. "Although the study included individuals who drink up to 25 cups a day, the average intake among the highest coffee consumption group was five cups a day. We would like to study these people more closely in our future work to help advise safe limits," Fung said. "This research will hopefully put some of the media reports in perspective, as it rules out one of the potential detrimental effects of coffee on our arteries," said Metin Avkiran from British Heart Foundation, UK.
‘Women with stomach cancer live longer than men patients’ IANS, LONDON
R
esearchers have found that female patients with oesophagus and stomach cancer are likely to survive longer than male patients, but experience more nausea, vomiting and diarrhea during therapy. The findings of a latest UK study could potentially help in managing patients and also highlight who are more at risk against specific side effects. "We tend to use a standard treatment approach for managing oesophageal and stomach cancers. What this research suggests is that there are significant differences between male and female patients

not only in how they react to chemotherapy but also how long they survive following treatment
for their cancer" said study lead author Avani Athauda from Royal Marsden Hospital in Britain.
"For female patients, it may be worthwhile providing additional awareness and counselling for gastrointestinal side effects when prescribing chemotherapy," Athauda said. For the study, the researchers conducted an analysis on data taken from four previously published large randomized trials conducted primarily in the UK. Patients in the trials had been allocated to receive chemotherapy before undergoing surgery to remove the tumors. In the analysis of over 3,000 patients (2,668 male patients and 597 female), the researchers found female patients were significantly more likely to experience nausea
(10 per cent versus 5 per cent), vomiting (10 per cent versus 4 per cent) and diarrhea (9 per cent versus 4 per cent). Female patients were also significantly more likely to live longer than male ones following treatment for their cancer, said the study. "This is a significant finding based on a large scale data set, and furthers our understanding about two types of cancer that affect almost 16,000 people each year in the UK alone," said David Cunningham, Professor at the University of London. The study is scheduled to be presented at American Society of Clinical Oncology's(ASCO)annual meeting in Chicago.

BY ASIA HUMAN SERVICES SECAUCUS, NJ- Quest Diagnostics says nearly 12 million of its patients may have had their personal, financial and medical information breached. American Medical Collection Agency, a billing collections service provider, informed Quest Diagnostics about the data security incident. According to the company, someone had unauthorized access to their systems between last August and this past March. American Medical Collection Agency (AMCA), a billing collections service provider, has informed Quest Diagnostics that an unauthorized user had access to AMCA’s system containing personal information AMCA received from various entities, including from Quest. AMCA provides billing collections services to Optum360, which in turn is a Quest contractor. Quest and Optum360 are working with forensic experts to investigate the matter. On May 31, 2019, AMCA notified Quest and Optum360 that the data on AMCA’s affected system included information regarding approximately 11.9 million Quest patients. AMCA believes this information includes personal information, including certain financial data, Social Security numbers, and medical information, but not
laboratory test results. AMCA has not yet provided Quest or Optum360 detailed or complete information about the AMCA data security incident, including which information of which individuals may have been affected. And Quest has not been able to verify the accuracy of the information received from AMCA. Quest is taking this matter very seriously and is committed to the privacy and security of our patients’ personal information. Since learning of the AMCA data security incident, we have suspended sending collection requests to AMCA. We are committed to keeping our patients, health care providers, and all relevant parties informed as we learn more.

Waqar Ahmed
BY ASIA HUMAN SERVICES CENTENNIAL, CO- A sexual assault and harassment lawsuit leveled last year against Centennial, Colorado, business incubator Innovation Pavilion and its Indian American founder Waqar Ahmed has been dropped amid a settlement agreement. The lawsuit was filed in May 2018 by Suzy Gutierrez against the incubator and Ahmed. As part of the settlement, Ahmed must make monthly payments to Gutierrez until October 2020, court documents said, according to the report. The amount of each payment, however, was not disclosed. Gutierrez, a former Innovation Pavilion employee, alleged Ahmed sexually assaulted her multiple times and used business trips
“to try and cultivate a sexual relationship” with her. The case, first reported by BusinessDen, resulted in Ahmed’s resignation as CEO. He released a video in response to the lawsuit in which he claimed his relationship with Gutierrez was consensual. The company dissolved months later, the report notes. Another former employee also told BusinessDen last May that she was sexually harassed by Ahmed. Ahmed founded Innovation Pavilion in 2011 as a coworking and event campus for startups. The company’s operations at its Centennial campus at 9200 E. Mineral Ave. ceased last year, and Ahmed’s plans to open campuses in other cities — including Joliet, Illinois — never came to fruition, the report said.
