MENTAL HEALTH COPING STRATEGIES DURING A PANDEMIC AND AFTER

A

“The coronavirus can significantly affect the mental health of people as social distancing and self-isolation are recommended. The government has told us to stay at home and only go outside for food or health reasons, staying six feet away from people and washing hands properly is essential. This suggests that our social activities will no longer be available to us. That is the time when boredom may strike in, and one may also get bogged down mentally,” commented Dr Bangar.

Donald Trump signs into law bill to punish China over crackdown on Uyghur Muslims

Trump pleaded with Xi for help in reelection, says former security adviser

The Uyghur Human Rights Policy Act, 2020 holds accountable the perpetrators of human rights violations and abuses such as the systematic use of indoctrination camps, forced labour and intrusive surveillance to eradicate the ethnic identity and religious beliefs of Uyghurs and other minorities in China, Trump said.

US President Donald Trump.

HiIndia Newsdesk US President Donald Trump has signed into law a legislation that condemns the

gross human rights violations of Uyghur minority groups in China’s restive Muslimmajority Xinjiang region, paving the way for imposing sanctions against senior Chinese

officials. However, a section of the Act purports to limit his discretion to terminate inadmissibility sanctions under the Act, he said on Wednesday. “In some circumstances, this limitation could be inconsistent with my constitutional authorities,” Trump said. Reacting to the development, the Chinese foreign ministry in Beijing slammed the law, saying it “maliciously attacks” China’s policy in the Xinjiang region. China will “resolutely hit back and the US will bear the burden of all subsequent consequences”, it said in a statement after Trump signed the Act into law.

US President Donald Trump with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping.

HiIndia Newsdesk President Donald Trump virtually pleaded with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping at a G-20 summit for help in his reelection, former US national security adviser John Bolton has claimed in a new book. The White House has said the forthcoming book by Bolton is “full of classified information” and the Department of Justice has sought a temporary restraining order blocking its release. Excerpts from the book, “The Room Where It Happened: A White House Memoir”, were carried by The New York Times, The Washington Post and The Wall Street Journal on Wednesday. Published by Simon & Schuster, the book is slated to hit the stores on June 23. Bolton was fired by the president last year.

Donald Trump renews US secretary of state condoles threat to cut ties with China death of Indian soldiers in face-off The world’s two largest economies have been at loggerheads over the handling of the coronavirus pandemic and China’s move to impose security legislation on Hong Kong, among multiple points of friction that have worsened this year.

HiIndia Newsdesk President Donald Trump on Thursday renewed his threat to cut ties with China, a day after U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer told Congress he did not see decoupling the U.S. and Chinese economies as a viable option. “It was not Ambassador Lighthizer’s fault (yesterday in Committee) in that perhaps

Court rejects Trump bid to end young immigrants’ protections HiIndia Newsdesk The Supreme Court on Thursday rejected President Donald Trump’s effort to end legal protections for 650,000 young immigrants, a stunning rebuke to the president in the midst of his reelection campaign. For now, those immigrants retain their protection from deportation and their authorisation to work in the United States. The outcome seems certain to elevate the issue in Trump’s campaign, given the antiimmigrant rhetoric of his first presidential run in 2016 and immigration restrictions his administration has imposed since then.

I didn’t make myself clear, but the U.S. certainly does maintain a policy option, under various conditions, of a complete decoupling from China,” Trump said on Twitter. The world’s two largest economies have been at loggerheads over the handling of the coronavirus pandemic and China’s move to impose security legislation on Hong Kong, among multiple points of friction that have worsened this year.

HiIndia Newsdesk The United States secretary of state Mike Pompeo has condoled the death of the 20 Indian Army soldiers, who were killed in the recent face-off with Chinese troops in Galwan Valley of eastern Ladakh. “We extend our deepest condolences to the people of India for the lives lost as a result

of the recent confrontation with China. We will remember the soldiers’ families, loved ones, and communities as they grieve,” Pompeo tweeted. Before this, the US said it is “closely monitoring” the situation between India and China after a violent face-off between troops of the two countries at the Line of Actual Control and had extended support to a peaceful resolution of the current situation. “We are closely monitoring the situation between Indian and Chinese forces along the Line of Actual Control. Both India and China have expressed a desire to de-escalate, and we support a peaceful resolution of the current situation,” a state department spokesperson said on Thursday.

China’s acts on Indian border meant to take advantage of Covid distractions: US official HiIndia Newsdesk China opening multiple fronts like the one on India border may be because of Beijing’s assessment that the world is distracted due to Covid-19 pandemic and it may advantage of it, a top American diplomat said Thursday. Assistant Secretary for East Asian and Pacific Affairs David Stilwell made the remark, adding the Trump administration is closely watching the Indo-China situation. The latest Chinese activities with India is similar to Beijing’s past activities on India

border including Doklam, Stilwell told reporters during a conference call.

Assistant Secretary for East Asian and Pacific Affairs David Stilwell made the remark, adding the Trump administration is closely watching the Indo-China situation. “One explanation for (China) creating multiple fronts like this is an assessment in Beijing that the world is distracted and is focused entirely on survival right

(now), recovering from the corona pandemic, which then possibly is seen as an opportunity to take advantage of the distraction,” Stillwell said. “I’m not going to offer an official US Government position on that, but there are numerous explanations out there for that (in the public domain),” he said, responding to a question on the aggressive Chinese behaviour with its neighbours, including India. “What we’re doing, we’re obviously watching the India-China border dispute very closely,” Stillwell said.

Ladakh isn’t South China Sea, will not allow status quo to change: Official HiIndia Newsdesk The commanding officer of the PLA battalion deployed in eastern Ladakh and his second-in-command died in the violent faceoff between Chinese and Indian soldiers in the Galwan area of eastern Ladakh on Monday, people familiar with the developments said on Friday. China has confirmed that the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) suffered casualties but has dodged repeated questions from international media about details of the clash. Twenty Indian soldiers including a colonelranked officer were killed in the violent scrap, the first Indian casualties in a clash with the PLA in 45 years.

The PLA battalion lost its commanding officer and his deputy in the violent face-off in Ladakh’s Galwan area, according to information available with South Block

“This was the first clash of its kind on the Line of Actual Control because India has the capability and the will to stand up to an aggressive China,” a top military commander told Hindustan Times. Chinese trops, which had mobilised soldiers along the Line of Actual Control and set up a stand-off with India for nearly six weeks, refused to back down in line with the understanding reached between top commanders of the two armies on June 6. What started off as an argument between local commanders of the two sides on June 15 evening after the PLA attempted to build a structure on the Indian side during the de-escalation process soon spiralled into a full-blown fisticuffs.

These soldiers were returned on the LAC after hectic negotiations between the two sides, including three rounds of talks at the Major General level from Tuesday to Thursday, officials told. Supreme Court asks Centre to fix Covid-19 test rates across country HiIndia Newsdesk Taking note of dissimilarity in Covid-19 testing rates across states, the Supreme Court on Friday asked the Centre to decide on the issue, and said all states should set up a panel of experts to inspect hospitals to ensure proper care of patients. A bench comprising Justices Ashok Bhushan, S K Kaul and MR Shah, which would pass the order later, observed during the hearing that there should be uniformity in rates charged across all states. It indicated however that the court will not venture into the fixation of the charges which will be taken care of by the Centre. It said the court may also consider passing an order for installation of CCTVs in hospitals to ensure monitoring of patient care.In the last week of May, the Indian Council of Medical Research removed the price cap of Rs 4,500 for the real-time polymerase chain reaction test used to detect coronavirus disease (Covid-19).

Mahatma Gandhi’s statue in WHO hopeful Covid-19 vaccines could be available Amsterdam vandalised: Reports before end of this year

A 75-year-old man saw the daubs on Wednesday and called the municipality. “I have lived here for forty years and I have never experienced this. I have been watching the statue for years,” the man said.

Addressing a press briefing from Geneva on the latest coronavirus drug trial findings, the top WHO scientist also said that clinical trials have now definitively shown that anti-malarial drug hydroxychloroquine does not have an impact on preventing deaths from COVID-19.

As far as the use of hydroxychloroquine for prevention of COVID-19, either before or after exposure, the last word is not yet out. There are some big trials going on.

Turkey makes masks mandatory in Istanbul HiIndia Newsdesk Turkish authorities have made the wearing of masks mandatory in three major cities to curb the spread of COVID-19 following an uptick in confirmed cases since the reopening of many businesses. The governors of Istanbul, Ankara and Bursa announced the mask rule late Wednesday in line with a recommendation by the country’s scientific advisory council. Masks are now obligatory in 47 out of 81 provinces. The statements said masks would be worn in all public spaces. Turkey is seeing an upward trend in the daily number of infections after the government authorized cafes, restaurants, gyms, parks, beaches and museums to reopen.

Thursday said that the agency is optimistic and hopeful that the COVID-19 vaccines could be available before the end of this year. Addressing a press briefing from Geneva on the latest coronavirus drug trial findings, the top WHO scientist also said that clinical trials have now definitively shown that antimalarial drug hydroxychloroquine does not have an impact on preventing deaths from COVID-19. In reference to a future vaccine against the deadly virus, she said there are about 10 candidates which are in human testing phase and at least three of them are entering the new promising phase-three stage which proves a vaccine’s efficacy.

On Ladakh border incident, China official asked 6 questions. Answers none

HiIndia Newsdesk India and China have agreed to deal with the “serious matter” triggered by the violent clash between border troops in eastern Ladakh’s Galwan Valley on Monday in a

“just” manner, the Chinese foreign ministry said on Thursday. “Both sides (India and China have) agreed to deal with the serious matter caused by the conflict at the Valley in a just manner, jointly observe the commander level talks consensus and deescalate the tensions as soon as possible and safeguard the peace and tranquility,” Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson, Zhao Lijian said at the regular ministry briefing on Thursday. Zhao took six questions on the border incident but managed to skirt it all by repeating statements and not revealing China’s casualty figures.

custodial killing of African-American George Floyd, according to media reports. The statue of Gandhi on the Churchilllaan in Amsterdam was covered with red paint and the pedestal has ‘racist’ and an abbreviation for an expletive against the police chalked on it, Metro, the Dutch newspaper, reported. According to alderman Rutger Groot Wassink, the municipality will file a declaration for daubing. “Obviously, we are opposed to any form of vandalism and daubing of these things is completely unacceptable,” the city official was quoted as saying by the AD.nl. “It is logical that we will file a declaration, the image will be cleaned,” Wassink said.

China passes draft of controversial Hong Kong security law HiIndia Newsdesk China’s ceremonial legislature on Thursday passed a draft of a national security bill for Hong Kong that has been strongly criticized as undermining faith in the semiautonomous Chinese region’s legal and political institutions. The National People’s Congress’ Standing Committee reviewed the bill that covers four categories of crimes: succession; subversion of state power; local terrorist activities, and collaborating with foreign or external foreign forces to endanger national security.

Nepal map Bill now law, Canada’s Sikh lawmaker calls MP India says disappointed a ‘racist’; removed from Parliament

HiIndia Newsdesk Nepal set itself on a collision course with India Thursday after the Upper House unanimously cleared a constitution amendment Bill, endorsing the country’s new map that includes territories with India. President Bidhya Devi Bhandari gave her assent to the Bill within hours of its passage in the Rastriya Sabha. This deepens the boundary row with India which has already rejected Nepal’s claim to the areas of Kalapani, Lipulekh and Limpiyadhura in Uttarakhand, saying it is

“violative of our current understanding to hold talks on outstanding boundary issues”. In New Delhi, sources said the government was “disappointed” at the manner in which Kathmandu did not try to create a “conducive atmosphere” and “positive situation”, despite the feelers for talks. The onus, sources said, was on the Nepal government. In the Rastriya Sabha, 57 of the 58 members — except the Chairman — voted ‘aye’ in favour of the Bill. Chairman Ganesh Prasad Timilsina certified the House resolution. The Bill, passed earlier by the House of Representatives, gives Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli the constitutional mandate to “reclaim” the territories from India as promised. “We must have these areas under our administrative control,” said Radheshyam Adhikary, member of the Opposition Nepali Congress in Rastriya Sabha.

His motion also called for other accountability measures related to the RCMP, including a full review of the use of force by members and the training officers get, according to the report.

HiIndia Newsdesk Canada’s Indian-origin Sikh MP Jagmeet Singh was removed from Parliament after he called a lawmaker “racist” for denying

approval for a motion calling out systemic racism in the police force, according to a media report. The New Democratic Party (NDP) leader said that he stands by his words even after he was removed from the House of Commons for calling Bloc Quebecois House Leader Alain Therrien a racist for denying the approval needed for a motion calling out systemic racism in the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), CTV News reported. “I don’t back down from standing up to racism. I don’t think it benefits for me to call people names, I was angry at the moment and I stand by it,” Singh told reporters after the incident on Wednesday. “In that moment I got angry, but I am sad now, because why can’t we act? Why can’t we do something to save peoples’ lives? We can do something, and why would someone say no to that?”, he said. Singh then rose, and said in French: It’s true, I called him a racist.

Government further eases restrictions on OCI cardholders’ entry into India

UAE airlines operating charter flights for repatriation of stranded Indians

The Union Home Ministry of India has eased more restrictions on the entry of Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card holders with new rules issued last Friday. Those now allowed entry into India include: Minor children who hold OCI cards and whose parents are Indian nationals OCI card holders who wish to come to India on account of family emergencies like critical medical conditions of immediate family members or death Married couples, where one spouse is an OCI cardholder and the other is an Indian national Students who are OCI cardholders, where at least one of their parents is an Indian citizen or an OCI cardholder Additionally, the government has also allowed the following foreign nationals to travel to India: Foreign nationals who are minor children where at least one parent is an Indian citizen or an OCI cardholder Foreign nationals married to Indian citizens Foreign nationals who are single parents

Dubai, Jun 17 : Major UAE airlines are operating charter flights on behalf of companies and community groups for the repatriation of Indians stranded in the Gulf country due to the travel restrictions imposed in view of the coronavirus pandemic. Several companies and community groups have chartered repatriation flights with the UAE airlines, with some of them operating the first international flights to some destinations in India, the Gulf News reported. The special repatriation flights arranged by the Indian government under the Vande Bharat Mission are operated by Air India and Air India Express while some private airlines from India will soon be joining the mission. However, the pace of the repatriation mission, dubbed to be the largest in the history, gathered more steam after the Indian government allowed private airlines in the UAE and India to operate charter flights on behalf of companies and community groups.

Punjab CM hails first Sikh woman Kerala Oppn sees red over Covid graduate of US Military Academy negative certificate from expats

Second Lt. Anmol Narang

HiIndia Newsdesk Chandigarh– Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh, here on Sunday, complemented Anmol Narang for becoming

the first observant Sikh woman to graduate from the US Military Academy. “I congratulate 23-year-old Anmol Narang who on Saturday became the first observant Sikh to graduate from the US Military Academy at West Point,” the Chief Minister tweeted. “Anmol, the entire Punjab is proud of you. God bless!” he added. “I am excited and honored to be fulfilling my dream of graduating from West Point,” said Second Lt. Anmol Narang. “I am showing other Sikh Americans that any career path is possible for anyone willing to rise to the challenge.”

HiIndia Newsdesk Thiruvananthapuram, June 13 (IANS) Congress and BJP leaders on Saturday reacted sharply to a new Kerala government order which insists on a Covid negative certificate from all those who are arriving from abroad on chartered flights. This new order will become applicable from June 20.Leader of Opposition Ramesh Chennithala said it was surprising that the Pinarayi Vijayan government which passed an unanimous resolution in the Kerala Assembly to bring back all the Kerala diaspora without any testing, has now come out with a totally different order. It was on March 12 that the Kerala Assembly

passed the resolution, after the Union Civil Aviation ministry demanded a Covid negative certificate from those who were coming from Italy and South Korea. “This new guideline is not applicable to those coming on Vande Bharat flights. It’’s sad that those coming on chartered flights are those who do not have any money and now with this new direction they will have to spend from their pocket. This is totally unacceptable and this irresponsible order should be withdrawn,” said Chennithala. “What’’s even more surprising is that the Covid negative certificate should not be older than 48 hours before the flight departs.

At a virtual press conference on Monday, DMK president M K Stalin commented on the government’s method of containing the pandemic in the State.

HiIndia Newsdesk Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palanisamy Monday announced complete lockdown in four districts – Chennai, Chengalpet, Kancheepuram and Thiruvallur – from June 19 to June 30 following a surge in Covid-19 cases The decision was taken by the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister after he chaired a review meeting with the expert committee of health professionals constituted by the government as well as with the Tamil Nadu Health department officials and other ministers. Edappadi said under the National Disaster Act of 2005, the four districts, which are worst affected due to Covid-19, will go under a complete lockdown for a period of 12 days. The CM

Stalin took a jibe at EPS by saying that only two days earlier, EPS had said that news regarding a complete lockdown was a rumour but now, the Chief Minister has implemented it from June 19.

also announced Rs. 1,000 cash support to all ration cardholders in these lockdown areas. After EPS’ lockdown announcement, DMK chief M K Stalin criticised the decision. In a tweet, Stalin said, “The AIADMK government should come out of the belief that by implementing lockdown alone we can succeed the novel coronavirus. By doing more tests, contract tracing and necessary treatments alone we can prevent the spread of the virus.” Stalin even took a jibe at EPS by saying that only two days earlier, EPS had said that news regarding a complete lockdown was a rumour but now, the Chief Minister has implemented it from June 19. “He does not know what is happening in his government. I hope that at least this lockdown will be implemented properly”, he added.

US Open to be played behind closed doors, announces New York Governor

Lionel Messi scores as Barcelona tops Leganes in return to Camp Nou

The decision to host the tournament comes as many tennis stars have shown their apprehensions of going ahead with the US Open.

New York [USA], (ANI): US Open will be

played from August 31 to September 13 behind closed doors, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced on Tuesday.

HiIndia Newsdesk Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on Wednesday suspended team doctor Madhu Thottappillil for a social media post on the death of 20 Indian Army personnel during a clash with Chinese troops in eastern Ladakh. CSK said in a tweet on Wednesday that the tweet by the doctor had been made in personal capacity and that he had been suspended from the team. “The Chennai Super Kings Management was not aware of the personal tweet of Dr. Madhu Thottappillil. He has been

suspended from his position as the Team Doctor,” the statement read. “Chennai Super Kings regrets his tweet which was without the knowledge of the Management and in bad taste,” it added. Thottappillil has been with the team since the IPL’s inception and is a specialist in sports medicine. On Tuesday, after reports came in of Indian casualties during the violent face-off in Galwan Valley, Thottappillil had posted a tweet on the Army jawans in which he mentioned PMCares. He later deleted the tweet. In the worst flare-up on the Line of Actual Control in more than five decades, twenty Indian Army personnel, including the commanding officer of 16 Bihar, were killed Monday night in violent clashes with Chinese troops in the Galwan valley of Ladakh where disengagement of troops on either side was underway.

HiIndia Newsdesk

Cuomo has also said that the United States Tennis Association will take precautions to protect players. He also said robust testing will be conducted to ensure that the tournament goes ahead smoothly. “The @usopen will be held in Queens, NY, without fans from August 31 to September 13. The USTA will take extraordinary precautions to protect players and staff, including robust testing, additional cleaning, extra locker room space, and dedicated housing & transportation,” Cuomo said in a tweet. The decision to host the tournament comes as many tennis stars have shown their apprehensions of going ahead with the US Open. Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios also said that the decision to go ahead with the US Open is a selfish move, given the current situation on coronavirus pandemic.

HiIndia Newsdesk In its first match without fans at the 99,000-capacity Camp Nou Stadium since the Spanish league was suspended because of the coronavirus, Barcelona defeated Leganés 2-0 Tuesday with a goal by Lionel Messi. Ansu Fati also scored as Barcelona overcame a slow start against its last-place opponent to open a five-point gap to Real Madrid ahead of the rival’s home game against Valencia on Thursday. Fati opened the scoring just before halftime and Messi converted a 69th-minute penalty for his league-leading 21st goal. It was also his 699th career goal for club and country.

CSK suspends team doctor Prajnesh Gunneswaran for tweet on Ladakh clash faces tricky US Open choices Prajnesh Gunneswaran, ranked 132 in the world, is expected to make the main draw of the final Grand Slam of the year, but he is conflicted about traveling to the Flushing Meadows.

HiIndia Newsdesk Opening of a slot in a Grand Slam main draw should ideally bring cheer to Prajnesh Gunneswaran, ranked No 132 in the world. But the Covid-19 world is a tricky one to negotiate while making choices that would’ve once seemed commonplace for India’s no 2 singles player. Like the upcoming US Open which is dividing the tennis community right down the middle. The United States Tennis Association (USTA) is expected to go ahead with the US Open as planned, but the prospect of a

resumption of the tour isn’t straightforward. “The US is still not fine yet. It’s not a great decision,” says Prajnesh, who played in the main draw of all four Grand Slams in 2019. “It’s a good thing for the tour to restart. But it is tricky because not everybody can play because there will be some who can’t participate because maybe they aren’t allowed to travel (by their respective governments). It’s a complicated time, but (organisers) have the perspective that they need to run the tournament maybe for the sake of the money that they make from it as an organisation.”

Rishabh Pant immensely skilled but needs to be groomed: Syed Kirmani Syed Kirmani does not approve of the ‘makeshift wicketkeepers’ approach, which the Indian cricket team has stuck to by making KL Rahul keep wickets so that, and in captain Virat Kohli’s words, ‘the team can strike good balance.’ HiIndia Newsdesk As for Kirmani, he feels Pant had his opportunities but given he couldn’t do much, maybe it’s time to polish him a little more before he could become part of Indian squads. “Yes, he did not capitalise on the chances provided to him,” Kirmani says. “Wicketkeeping is the most thankless and difficult job in cricket and I believe Pant has to be properly groomed. I agree that talent has to be encouraged, but mind you, in every profession, talented and promising youngsters have to be under the study of experienced seniors. Otherwise a lot

of water will go under the bridge by the time the youngster comes up to the expectations. “Pant is immensely skilled. That skill will bloom and flourish with experience, it cannot be overnight. It will take a minimum of two seasons if one is a quick learner.” Pant’s struggles paved the way for the return of Wriddhiman Saha, who Kirmani finds the most impressive of the lot. Battling one injury after another, Saha played his first international match for India after 22 months last October, and the way things panned out in New Zealand in February, he would stick around a little longer.

eing inactive can be the strongest risk factor for disability as one ages. The new study details the benefits of performing light physical activities and its importance for older people. Understanding the benefits of moving more often and engaging in even lighter forms of physical activity is important for older adults’ health. These types of physical activity may be easier for older adults to practice regularly, especially those who are frail. A team of researchers was interested in studying how participating in these different intensities of activity, and whether a person spreads their physical activity throughout the day, affects the chances for developing a major mobility disability. The participants in the study were older adults who had challenges with physical function and who participated in the Lifestyle Interventions and Independence for Elders (LIFE) study. The researchers published their study in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society. The LIFE study examined whether a long-term exercise program could improve a major mobility disability. For the purposes of the study, the researchers considered that participants had a

“major mobility disability” if they were unable to walk 400 meters (about one-quarter of a mile, or five city blocks). The people in the study ranged in age from 70 to 89 years old. Before the study, participants got less than 20 minutes of exercise a week, were able to walk 400 meters in less than 15 minutes, and were determined to be able to safely participate in the study. The participants were divided into two groups: an exercise group and a group that received health education with no exercise. By the sixth month of the study, the participants in the exercise group performed an additional 40 minutes a week of moderate to vigorous exercise, which they continued after 12 months and 24 months. The researchers found that the intensity of physical activity, as well as the way that physical activity is spread throughout the day, should be matched to each individual’s physical health to minimize their likelihood of developing major mobility disability.

Celebrity fitness expert Ranveer Allahbadia advises people with respiratory disorders or heart issues to go easy. “Best is to do your cardio workouts at home,” he says, while asserting that exercising with masks depends on factors like its thickness and material, as well as your fitness. “You can jog wearing a mask. Though it obstructs breathing, but it shouldn’t result in acute emergency,” opines Delhi-based Dr Piyush Aggarwal. Agreeing to it, another Delhi-based doctor Ayush Goel says, “While exercising outside, wearing a mask is necessary. Remain cautious and focus on home workouts.”

Population-wide face mask use could push COVID-19 transmission down to controllable levels for national epidemics, and could prevent further waves of the pandemic disease when combined with lockdowns.

Population-wide face mask use could push COVID-19 transmission down to controllable levels for national epidemics, and could prevent further waves of the pandemic disease when combined with lockdowns, according to a British study on Wednesday. The research, led by scientists at the Britain’s Cambridge and Greenwich Universities, suggests lockdowns alone will not stop the resurgence of the new SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, but that even homemade masks can dramatically reduce transmission rates if enough people wear them in public. “Our analyses support the immediate and

universal adoption of face masks by the public,” said Richard Stutt, who co-led the study at Cambridge. He said combining widespread mask use with social distancing and some lockdown measures, could be “an acceptable way of managing the pandemic and re-opening economic activity” before the development of an effective vaccine against COVID-19, the respiratory illness caused by the coronavirus. The study’s findings were published in the “Proceedings of the Royal Society A” scientific journal. At the onset of the pandemic, scientific evidence on the effectiveness of face masks in slowing transmission of respiratory diseases was limited, and there was no data on COVID-19 since it was a previously unknown disease. But, prompted by some new research in recent weeks, the World Health Organization said on Friday it now recommends that everyone wear fabric face masks in public to try to reduce disease spread. In this study, researchers linked the dynamics of spread between people with population-level models to assess the effect on the disease’s reproduction rate, or R value, of different scenarios of mask adoption combined with periods of lockdown.

“EXTREMELY LONELY” SUSHANT SINGH RAJPUT COULD NOT HANDLE BOLLYWOOD’S CUTTHROAT WAYS Shah Rukh Khan, Akshay Kumar, Ranbir Kapoor, they all have their own favorite houses which produce these movies. There is nothing wrong with that but Sushant Singh Rajput should have realzed that you have to be a part of the system to change the system. You should not have given up. That’s what he did which is so unfortunate. One year without movies, you are actually in the dumps.

By Mayank Chhaya

34-year-old movie star ostensibly leading life of glamor and adulation suddenly dies leaving those who knew him, knew of him and knew about him flummoxed and heartbroken. The apparent suicide death by hanging of the actor Sushant Singh Rajput in his Mumbai apartment on June 14 has yet again underlined the subterranean struggles of those who lead a very public life. In a country where daily tragic deaths of ordinary people make no news or social media grief fest, Sushant Singh Rajput’s sudden death touched and affected many hearts. Shantanu Guha Ray, the well-known New Delhi-based investigative journalist and writer, offers a damning perspective on what preceded Rajput’s death. Ray is the India editor of the Central European news and a winner of the prestigious Ramnath Goenka Priuze for excellence in reporting about cricket. He is an author of five critically acclaimed books, including ‘Mahi’, a biography of the cricketer Mahendra Singh Dhoni, ‘Target’ about the National Spot Exchange Limited payment crisis, ‘Fixed’ about match fixing in cricket, ‘Found Dead’ about mysterious, unsolved urban murders, and ‘Diamonds: The India Story’. Ray spoke to the new Indian American radio station based in Chicago, Cincinnati and New York Bharat FM’s morning show ‘Suhani Subah’. Excerpts from his interview. Q: What do you think preceded Sushant Singh Rajput’s death? Shantanu: He was extremely lonely for almost a year. He was completely out of films. He did some small films or web series such as those 25 minutes to an episode for streaming services. Those also did not get him great success. ‘Chhichhore’, his last movie, did reasonably well. It did not go to the skies but what really pulled him down was the fact that there was an underlying message that nobody should touch him. Some of the big movie houses dumped him because he always took a stand. He was seen as a rebel without a cause. They quietly dumped him. The message was don’t touch this guy, he is a troublesome youngster who has to be listened but ignored. It was very clear. If you see the Twitter handles and the kinds of abusive language people in India are using against Karan Johar, you will realize where the levels of venom have gone. They are all blaming him for not standing with him (Rajput) when some issues came up with Yash Raj Films and not impressing upon Aditya Chopra that there were times when Sushant Singh Rajput should have been released to work in other banners. It’s like loaning a footballer from one club to another club for one or two matches. It can always happen. People do that for some mutual benefit but it did not work in the case of Sushant Singh Rajput. Q: So you are saying this contractual stranglehold destroyed his career. Shantanu: Complete. Lock, stock and barrel.

All papers in India are full of this angle and they are repeatedly saying this. There is more to it now. His father wants a CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) probe. His brotherin-law wants a CBI probe. They are saying it is possibly murder because they feel if a man is found hanging his tongue comes out but the cops are saying died because of asphyxia. They have ruled out murder. But then it would be very interesting to see if there is an additional probe into this. Q: It seems his disenchantment with his career led to his death whether it was suicide or otherwise. Shantanu: Absolutely. Bollywood is the world’s largest zone for movies. They produce two movies a day. So that means 700-800 movies come out Bollywood. Lots of money ride on it. Corporate houses have gone in. Once Steven Spielberg showed interest. I don’t know what happened to that, his deal with Anil Ambani but there is a tremendous amount of money riding on Bollywood. So everybody wants the largest slice of the pie. When actors grow old, they open up their own production houses which handle movies. So what they do is do a cameo for ten minutes and everything else is done by his house. Shah Rukh Khan, Akshay Kumar, Ranbir Kapoor, they all have their own favorite houses which produce these movies. There is nothing wrong with that but Sushant Singh Rajput should have realzed that you have to be a part of the system to change the system. You should not have given up. That’s what he did which is so unfortunate. One year without movies, you are actually in the dumps. Q: Rajput was deeply into astronomy apart from physics being his passion. He had a simulator built in his apartment. Also, he organized a trip of ten children to NASA. Shantanu: There is glamor, glitz, money, fame…all kinds of interviews, cameras, flashlights. And suddenly everything stops and you are just alone. You are in your tenth or 12th floor apartment looking at the stars and asking your friends let us take ten kids to NASA. You will have to blow up your money. Taking kids to NASA means an average cost of 200,000 rupees for kid, which is two million rupees. That means you are blowing two million to take 10 kids to NASA for an experience which is very noble. It shows a great heart. It also shows he actually had no work. So he looked at the stars, called friends, put them on the simulator and they would look at the galaxy. That’s all fine and there is a peculiar term for that in India—timepass—but in reality you are far away from work. Q: You wrote an acclaimed biography of the former Indian cricket captain Mahindra Singh Dhoni. Rajput was acclaimed for his performance as Dhoni in a biopic about him partly drawn from your book. How do you think Rajput did and how did it define his career? Shantanu: The movies like MSD work in bits and patches. It won’t get you great mileage because the Dhoni story was already over in 2011 when India won the world cup. After that Dhoni has been in and out of the team. New

captains have come. So for somebody to link you with Dhoni film would be asking for too much. ‘Sonchiriya’, which he really hoped would do well, ended up as a lemon. Nobody touched it. Add to that big banner movies went away from his hands really bothered him a lot. Q: Where do you think the blame lies—the system or the individual? Shantanu: Both because it is the individuals who make the system. A system does not generate on its own. People who make the system stayed away from him. They did not back. ‘Paani’ which he (Rajput) was really hoping on…. I personally know the story of ‘Paani’ when Shekhar Kapoor wanted help from Coca Cola, if Coca Cola could bankroll this ‘Paani’ venture. Coke backed out and ‘Paani’ dropped. So chances of Sushant Singh Rajput acting in a movie where it shows the water wars failed. So unless big guys back you, you are not on the big scale. Q: The movie world is a cruel world in many ways. Shantanu: It is very cruel. It is a huge ladder. It gives you great opportunities to climb and once you are the top suddenly you realize you will have to reinvent another ladder to go further up or else you fall. Rajput could not handle Bollywood’s cutthroat ways.

It can always happen. cross Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, social media users have unfollowed those who are being accused of fuelling nepotism in the film industry. Between Monday night and Tuesday evening, actor Kangana Ranaut saw an increase in Instagram followers (from about 2 million to 3.2 million and counting) while Karan Johar’s profile registered a rapid drop (from 11 million to 10.9 million, which was within 20 mins on Tuesday afternoon). The numbers are changing dynamically as you read this story, since social media users are enraged by the non-recognition of outsider talent in Bollywood. While Karan Johar has lost followers by the minute on Instagram, Kangana Ranaut has gained followers over night. “Kangana has always spoken for what’s right. In fact she

Was it suicide or planned murder?

Kangana Ranaut blasts

Kangana Ranaut’s team shared an explosive video of the actress talking about Sushant Singh Rajput’s death. In the video, she is once again seen exposing the Bollywood mafia.

K

angana can be heard saying Sushant didn’t get his due. She exposed the propaganda of the film fraternity and the journalists who underestimated the actor gave him the false impression that he is worthless. Kangana asked, “How can a person who’d scored a scholarship to Stanford University be mentally weak? Why wasn’t his debut performance in Kai Po Che acknowledged?” Kangana listed his successful films and continued, “Why did a terrible film like Gully Boy win all the awards when a spectacular movie like Chhichhore was ignored?” Kangana said: “He was a rank holder. How can his mind be weak? If you look at his last few posts, he is clearly saying, literally begging, ‘Watch my films. I have no Godfather. I

will be taken out of the industry’. In his interviews, he had expressed why the industry wasn’t accepting him. So is there no foundation of this incident?” Kangana even revealed that she gets messages from people who tell her not to take any wrong step in life. “Why do they want to put in my mind that I should commit suicide. But in Sushant’s case, he accepted it. He was called worthless and he agreed,” she said. The Manikarnika actor said that the same people who wrote about Sushant’s alleged drug use find Sanjay Dutt’s addiction cute. It is important to give talent their due. And if celebrities are struggling with personal and mental health issues, the media should try and emphasize with them, rather than making it difficult for them!”

ony showed off its PlayStation 5 console design last week and briefly teased the OS, now Sony’s VP of UX design at PlayStation, Matt MacLaurin, is promising an overhauled user interface for the PS5. Describing the new software interface as a “very interesting evolution of the OS,” MacLaurin says it’s a “100 percent overhaul of the PS4 UI and some very different new concepts” in a LinkedIn thread. “As it’s UI it’s practical first, but it’s a whole new visual language and a complete rearchitecting of the user interface,” explains MacLaurin. The new PS5 OS is “more subtle than flashy, but no pixel is untouched,” he adds. MacLaurin says the team will show off the new OS soon, after Sony briefly teased part of it during its PS5 games stream. The PS5 OS was shown as part of several Easter eggs throughout Sony’s event last week, culminating in the hardware reveal. The Galaxy S20 Plus BTS Edition looks like Samsung’s regular flagship, but with a unique iridescent purple exterior (the color is heavily associated with the K-pop group) that has a BTS logo on the back and the band’s heart iconography on the camera array. The BTS Edition of the phone also includes BTS-inspired Android themes, along with a preinstalled copy of the Weverse app (a social media platform used by BTS band members to communicate with fans and share content). Lastly, photo cards of the band are included in the similarly BTS-themed box. The BTS Edition Galaxy S20 Plus and Galaxy Buds Plus will be available on Samsung’s website and Amazon starting on July 9th — the seventh anniversary of the BTS ARMY fan collective — with preorders beginning on June 19th.

Computex 2020 is officially canceled Tesla reportedly adding USB-C ports The next Computex will be held in June 2021

Computex 2019 drew nearly 43,000 visitors from 171 countries, organizers said. It’s not the only annual tech trade show to cancel its 2020 installment.

After initially postponing it from June to September, organizers have now canceled Computex 2020 due to the ongoing impact of the coronavirus pandemic. The show will miss a year, like many other tech conferences that were planned for 2020. The next Computex event is slated for June 1st through 5th, 2021. The pandemic and the resulting travel restrictions to help curb its spread meant many participants would not have been able

to attend a show in Taipei in September, the organizers explained in a blog post. Taiwan has been hailed for isolating coronavirus patients and imposing travel restrictions relatively early compared to the rest of the world, resulting in fewer than 500 total cases and seven deaths from COVID-19. Computex 2019 drew nearly 43,000 visitors from 171 countries, organizers said. It’s not the only annual tech trade show to cancel its 2020 installment. MWC canceled its 2020 show in February, and E3 was canceled in March around the same time Google canceled I/O 2020. Some other shows, like Facebook’s F8 developer conference, opted to go with pared-down, virtual versions of their annual gatherings.

As first reported by Drive Tesla Canada, the features were already available in Tesla’s Model Y, and the carmaker began adding them last month to its Chinese-made Model 3 vehicles. The Model Y, which Tesla began delivering to US customers in March, comes standard with the Qi wireless phone charger, but until now, it’s only been available to Model 3 vehicles as an aftermarket add-on, according to Elektrek . Tesla lowered the prices of its Model 3, Model S, and Model X in North America last month, as well as the prices of the Model S and Model X cars sold in China. Its Chinese-produced Model 3 cars didn’t see a price reduction.

Mental health coping strategies during a pandemic and after

“The coronavirus can significantly affect the mental health of people as social distancing and self-isolation are recommended. The government has told us to stay at home and only go outside for food or health reasons, staying six feet away from people and washing hands properly is essential. This suggests that our social activities will no longer be available to us. That is the time when boredom may strike in, and one may also get bogged down mentally,” commented Dr Bangar.

Social distancing can help curb the spread of coronavirus, but, do you know that it can lead to loneliness? It can also trigger a depressive episode.

State Sen. Villivalam Vote-by-Mail Law Will Make Voting Safer and Easier BY A STAFF WRITER CHICAGO , IL– Governor JB Pritzker today signed legislation ensuring that all Illinoisans will be able to safely cast their ballots in the November election. “Given the COVID-19 pandemic, my colleagues and I worked to find ways to keep people from congregating in enclosed spaces, standing in long lines for hours, or otherwise risking their health in order to exercise their right to vote,” said State Senator Ram Villivalam (D-Chicago), a chief co-sponsor of the measure. “By designating Election Day as a state holiday and creating an expansive vote-by-mail program, it will allow a greater number of people the opportunity to vote without having to worry

about missing work or school.” Under the new law, those who voted within the last two years or registered to vote after the 2020 primary election will be receiving an application for a vote-by-mail ballot.

Additionally, it designates Election Day 2020 as a state holiday, allows for drive-by voting, extends early voting, and allows more people to serve as election judges. People who aren’t automatically sent an application will still be able to apply for a vote-by-mail ballot through the State Board of Elections’ website. “Allowing people to vote by mail or go in person to vote early are two great options to allow people to maintain a safe physical distance from each other,” Villivalam said. “Participation in the election process shouldn’t be a life or death decision.” The law, Senate Bill 1863, takes effect immediately..

City of Chicago Announces Eligibility Expansion for COVID-19 Testing at Six City-Run Sites

MAYOR’S NEWS RELEASE CHICAGO, IL – The City of Chicago today announced a citywide eligibility expansion for residents to get tested for COVID-19 at six City-run testing sites and is encouraging anyone who has had a recent high-risk exposure to be tested, which includes participation in protests that have happened throughout the city and country over the past several weeks. The City is also encouraging all residents to continue self-monitoring as the City continues to cautiously reopen and residents continue prudently expanding their social circles. These new measures aim to ensure that any Chicago resident in need of testing can be accommodated and further increase the amount of testing per day citywide. “As our city’s industries and public spaces cautiously reopen, we must remain steadfast in our fight against the COVID-19 virus, especially in light of the rising case levels we’ve seen in other areas nationwide,” said Mayor Lightfoot. “We encourage all Chicago residents who think they may need to be tested to visit one of these six sites, as well as learn more and pre-register online. We still have a long way to go with this pandemic and we all have a part to play in keeping ourselves and our communities healthy and secure during the months ahead.” Diagnostic testing for COVID-19 is free for all residents and available based on the

eligibility requirements below. The City strongly encourages anyone who thinks they may need to be tested to visit one of the sites. Workers onsite can accommodate several language needs in order to provide the best experience and educate residents coming to the testing sites. No questions will be asked about citizenship status, and no documentation related to citizenship will be requested. First Indian American Sikh Woman to Graduate from U.S. Military Academy BY A STAFF WRITER WEST POINT, NY- Scripting history, Anmol Kaur Narang has become the first Indian American Sikh woman to graduate from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. She is now commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Air Defense Artillery branch of the United States Army. Due to Covid-19 delaying graduation, members of the class commissioned May 23 during an oath of commissioning ceremony from remote locations. “I am excited and honored to be fulfilling my dream of graduating from West Point tomorrow,” Narang stated in a press release issued by the Sikh Coalition and distributed by Press Release Point. “The confidence and support of my community back home in Georgia has been deeply meaningful to me, and I am humbled that in reaching this goal, I am showing other Sikh Americans that any career path is possible for anyone

willing to rise to the challenge.” Narang will complete her Basic Officer Leadership Course at Fort Sill in Lawton, Oklahoma, after which she will head to her first posting in Okinawa, Japan, in January 2021. A second-generation Indian American born and raised in Roswell, Georgia, Narang had an early appreciation for military service due to her maternal grandfather’s career in the Indian army, as per the press release. After a gradually growing interest in military

service during high school, she began her application for West Point the afternoon after her family visited Pearl Harbor National Memorial in Honolulu, Hawaii. She attended one year of undergraduate study at the Georgia Institute of Technology before transferring to West Point, where she proceeded to study nuclear engineering and pursue a career path in air defense systems. “I am immensely proud of 2LT Narang for seeing her goal through and, in doing so, breaking a barrier for any Sikh American who wishes to serve,” said U.S. Army Captain Simratpal Singh, a family friend of Narang’s. “The broader acceptance of Sikh servicemembers among all of the service branches, as well as in top tier leadership spaces like West Point, will continue to benefit not just the rights of religious minority individuals, but the strength and diversity of the U.S. military.

FDA Issued an Emergency Use Authorization for COVID-19 Test and Warning Letter to EUCYT Lab, LLC

FDA NEWS RELEASE WASHINGTON, DC- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today announced the following actions taken in its ongoing response effort to the COVID-19 pandemic: This week, the FDA issued an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for Cue Health Inc.’s Cue COVID-19 Test. This test is authorized for use at the Point of Care, that is, in patient care settings, operating under a CLIA Certificate of Waiver, Certificate of Compliance, or Certificate of Accreditation. Point-of-care testing means that results are delivered to patients in patientcare settings, like hospitals, urgent care centers, and emergency rooms, instead of samples being sent to a laboratory. This approach gives patients more immediate access to test results. The FDA issued a warning letter to EUCYT Laboratories, LLC, for, among other things, marketing an unapproved exosome product for the treatment or prevention of COVID-19. There are currently no FDA-approved products to prevent or treat COVID-19. Testing updates: To date, the FDA has authorized 135 tests under EUAs, which include 114 molecular tests, 20 antibody tests, and 1 antigen test. The FDA, an agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, protects the public health by assuring the safety, effectiveness, and security of human and veterinary drugs, vaccines and other biological products for human use, and medical devices. The agency also is responsible for the safety and security of our nation’s food supply, cosmetics, dietary supplements, products that give off electronic radiation, and for regulating tobacco products.

Gov. Cuomo Announced NY Sees Lowest Daily Death Toll from COVID-19 Since Pandemic Peak

Gov. Andrew Cuomo

BY A STAFF WRITER NEW YORK, NY — New York saw its lowest daily death toll from COVID-19 since the peak of the state’s coronavirus pandemic, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Sunday. There were 23 deaths attributed to the new coronavirus on Saturday, which Cuomo called the “lowest number ever” during a news briefing. Saturday’s death toll marks a dramatic decrease from the 799 deaths recorded on April 8, which claimed the grim record as New York’s deadliest day in the pandemic. Hospitalizations statewide reached 1,657 patients on Saturday, the lowest number since March 20, according to Cuomo. Meanwhile, the state is testing about 50,000 people a day for the virus, and Cuomo is extending the open enrollment period for the state health insurance exchange to July 15. “We are making really great progress,” Cuomo said. Yet Cuomo warned of a possible uptick in cases of the coronavirus as New York begins to reopen, as is happening in 21 states across the U.S. that have rolled back their lockdown measures, an Associated Press analysis found this week. Cuomo threatened to halt — or even reverse — reopening measures in regions where residents and business owners are flouting state rules restricting social gatherings and requiring face coverings and social distancing. The state has received 25,000 complaints of businesses violating reopening plans by allowing large gatherings or not enforcing socialdistancing and mask requirements, Cuomo said, warning that bars and restaurants violating the rules could get their liquor licenses revoked. Manhattan and the Hamptons accounted for the most complaints, though Cuomo didn’t share the numbers for those regions. Cuomo also castigated police officers for not wearing masks and urged them to do more enforcement of open container laws and social distancing rules outside bars and restaurants where New Yorkers are congregating. There are now 383,324 confirmed cases of the coronavirus in New York, including 694 new cases statewide and 385 new cases in New York City.

Partiers Maskless Crowd For Outdoor Drinking, Dining in Astoria, NY BY A STAFF WRITER ASTORIA, NY — Crowds of people drinking and dining on the sidewalks of Astoria are drawing ire for flouting social distancing rules and forgoing masks. The city’s 311 hotline received dozens of complaints Friday and Saturday in the two ZIP codes that cover the main commercial drags of 30th Avenue and Broadway. 130th Ave., was the subject of seven complaints Friday of loud music and customers not social distancing. George Ballis, owner of The Grand, said he’s tried asking the crowds to disperse — but that he gets a profanity-laced earful in return. Ballis said he’s doing the most he can: He cleans and disinfects the restaurant weekly, makes his employees wear masks and has his bouncers try to get people moving. Across the street from The Grand, partiers outside Blend Astoria racked up eight complaints Friday and Saturday of loud music and a lack of social distancing and face coverings. Another three complaints listed 30th Avenue in general, where videos posted on

as previous generations did for ours. Here in Chicago, we will always champion the contributions our immigrant and refugee communities have made throughout the life of our city—DACA or otherwise—and continue to make every single day. So while we are pleased with this decision, we also call on Congress to act and pass legislation that will provide permanent, stable status to so many of these same neighbors and friends. And so long as I am Mayor, I will continue to do everything I can to support these communities, lift up their stories, and fight to ensure their rightful place in the country we all call home.
