TRUMP OFFICIALLY LAUNCHES RE-ELECTION CAMPAIGN US president terms it as ‘the greatest political witch hunt in the history IANS, NEW YORK
V
eering between incumbent and insurgent, US President Donald Trump trumpeted the economic gains during his two years in office but also portrayed himself as an outsider as he hit out against the political establishment and the inquiries against him during the official launch of his 2020 re-election campaign. Displaying his trademark flamboyance, Trump tried to make the attacks on him an attack on the 20,000 supporters packed inside a sports arena in Orlando, Florida, and his fervent backers elsewhere. “They tried to take away your dignity and your destiny,” he said of the Democrats reminding them that his 2016 rival Hillary Clinton had called his supporters “deplorable” and “irredeemable”.
BRIEFS USMCA ratification: Trump praises Mexico WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has congratulated his Mexican counterpart Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador on the ratification of the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement in the Mexican senate and called for the American Congress to do the same. The USMCA is a new trade deal between the three neighbouring countries that is set to replace the 1994 North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), reports Efe news. “Congratulations to President Lopez Obrador - Mexico voted to ratify the USMCA today by a huge margin,” Trump tweeted. “Time for Congress to do the same here!”
Obama’s Clean Power Plan dropped WASHINGTON: The Donald Trump administration has rolled back former President Barack Obama’s Clean Power Plan to limit carbon emissions and force the transition toward less polluting forms of energy. The new directive, dubbed “Accessible Clean Energy” and announced by Environment Protection Agency chief Andrew Wheeler , instructs the individual states to develop their own plans for power plant emission standards but does not include reduction targets for the states, Efe news reported. —IANS

Immigration was threaded through his 75-minute speech as he railed against illegal immigration and the Democrats for in essence advocating an open border policy, but promising reforms to
enable merit-based immigration of people who could contribute to the country while cracking down on those here illegally. The speech was thin on foreign policy, except for rebuilding the
military, getting China to be fair on trade and standing up to Russia. Russia came up frequently, but in the context of the inquiry into the allegations of collusion between him or his 2016 election campaign with Moscow. He denounced it as “the greatest political witch hunt in history”, which a President should never undergo. He said that $40 million was spent on it and it only served to clear him of the accusations. In a replay of the 2016 campaign, Trump went after Clinton, the Democrat who lost to him, as the crown chanted “Lock her up” as they had then. The US President raked up the 33,000 or so emails she had erased and a private server that she used illegally. He said the emails may yet be found and that she should be prosecuted.
Fed leaves interest rates unchanged WASHINGTON: The US Federal Reserve has left interest rates unchanged as officials weighed mixed signals on the Jerome Powell health of the US economy and the impact of trade tensions. The Federal Open Market Committee, the Fed’s policy-making committee, decided to maintain the target range for the federal funds rate at 2.25 per cent to 2.5 per cent, the Fed said in a statement on Wednesday after concluding a two-day policy meeting, Xinhua reported. The central bank noted that the US labour market “remains strong” and economic activity “is rising at a moderate rate” since May, while indicators of business fixed investment “have been soft” and uncertainties about the economic outlook “have increased.” The meeting came as market participants are expecting the Fed to lower interest rates later this year. —IANS

During the call on Tuesday, Trump said he looked forward to meeting Xi again during the upcoming Group of 20 (G20) summit in the Japanese city of Osaka later this month, and conducting in-depth discussions on bilateral ties and
issues of common concern, reports Xinhua news agency. The US side, Trump added, valued its economic and trade cooperation with China, and hoped that the teams on both sides can conduct communication, and find a way to resolve the current dispute as soon as possible. Trump said he believed the entire world hopes to see the US and China reach an agreement. For his part, Xi said some difficulties have recently occurred in

ald Trump pulled Washington out of a nuclear deal in May last year and resumed energy and financial
sanctions on the Islamic Republic. The US in the past weeks has continuously deployed military assets to the region on the pretext of “Iran’s threat.” The latest move was on Monday when Pentagon announced to send about 1,000 additional troops to the Middle East. The tensions between Washington and Tehran have been rising due to the attack on two oil tankers last week in Gulf of Oman as well as Iran’s threats of not complying with the 2015 Iran nuclear deal. Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said in a broadcast speech on state television that US efforts to isolate Iran have been unsuccessful.

Gujarat court on Thursday sentenced sacked IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt to life imprisonment in a three-decadeold custodial death case, finding him guilty of murder. Jamnagar District and Sessions Court Judge D.M. Vyas also awarded similar penalty to police constable Pravinsinh Jhala.
The verdict came after the Supreme Court last week rejected Bhatt’s application seeking fresh examination of witnesses in the case, contending that this was key to arrive at a proper judgment. The ex-officer had challenged a decision of the Gujarat High Court against this plea. The state government had meanwhile submitted in the Supreme Court that the trial court had reserved its ver-

Create atmosphere of trust, Modi tells Imran IANS, NEW DELHI
P
rime Minister Narendra Modi has told his Pakistani counterpart Imran Khan that his country needs to create an “environment of trust, free of terror, violence and hostility” for the two neighbors to have “normal and cooperative relations”, which India seeks. Modi wrote this to Khan in response to his congratulatory message earlier this month on his becoming the Prime Minister again. External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said at a media briefing here on Thursday that the Prime Minister’s letter made no mention about talks and termed as “fake news” the reports appearing in Pakistani media.

“There is no change in the situation or our position...It is an established diplomatic protocol that whenever someone writes to you, you respond. The Prime Min-
ister received letters from several foreign leaders and he responded,” Kumar told reporters, adding the June 12 letter to Khan was keeping in with that protocol.
He said Modi wrote to Khan that, “We want normal and cooperative relations” and for that Pakistan needs to “create an atmosphere which is free of terror and violence”. When asked to comment on reports in Pakistani media which claimed that the Indian Prime Minister had expressed readiness to hold talks, the MEA spokesperson termed it as “distortion” and “fake news peddling”. To another question, Kumar said, “There is no change in our position. We have said Pakistan has to take action against terrorism, which is irreversible.” Khan had written a letter to Modi earlier this month, congratulating him on becoming the PM and saying that there should be dialogue to resolve the outstanding issues between the two countries.

Bengal in center-stage for wrong news What is happening in West Bengal is spreading to other states like Delhi, Maharashtra and Hyderabad. AIIMS doctors in Delhi are looking after patients wearing a helmet JAYANTA GHOSAL, NEW DELHI
N
obel laureate economist Amartya Sen repeatedly said that for the development of the country, primary necessity is primary health and education services. If health is not given importance then a country or a nation cannot prosper. The backbone of a country is the development of these two. Jyoti Basu was the Chief Minister of West Bengal when Prasanta Sur was the state Health Minister. I can still remember that time, there was anger across the state about the mismanagement of hospitals. Health is a kind of service that solution to grievances of patients is not easy for the government. There is a problem of demand and supply. But it is not that the leader of the ruling party has no role to play in the health sector. I saw the movement of doctors and protesters against Sur. When looking at government hospitals in Kolkata, I started going to hospitals one by one as a young journalist. I saw the condition of patients’ beds in hospitals. There were blood stains on pillows. There was no blood in blood banks. I went to a hospital late at night and

saw various types of businesses running there. When junior doctors started the movement in 1984, Jyoti Basu and his government said the doctors would not sit in discussions. But, in the end, Jyoti Basu had to sit down under pressure to negotiate. On that day I was in Kolkata and today in the national capital of
Delhi -- three decades have passed but the situation has not changed as yet. Now what is happening in West Bengal is spreading to other states. AIIMS doctors in Delhi are looking after patients wearing a helmet. This is the symbolic movement of junior doctors. It was found that the movement spread to Hyder-
abad, Maharashtra and other states. This time around, many issues came up during the movement of junior doctors in Kolkata. Firstly, regarding the movement of doctors, it is not very desirable that the matter has become a laboratory of Trinamool versus BJP politics. Initially, there was no need for Chief
Minister Mamata Banerjee to come to the doctors. And when the Chief Minister came, everyone started the slogan - ‘We want Justice’. Mamata Banerjee need not have got so angry on hearing those chants. The BJP is desperate to bake the bread of politics in this movement. No surprises there. Once the Trinamool Congress had done exactly that. But the BJP has not entered the movement directly. Besides, the protesters could also go against the BJP because these doctors are not from the BJP. No flag of any political party was seen there. Junior doctors are not lumpen or mafia and not anti-social either. They represent the urban intellectual comprising meritorious students. But Mamata Banerjee said that the agitation was being run by outsiders. Mamata Banerjee is concerned about Hindu politics. Hence, she is more aggressive. Now the biggest weapon of this attack is the Bengali nationalist protest against religious polarization. It has been announced that those in Bengal will have to speak Bengali. In 2019, what will be Mamata’s success using a political weapon? Politics became bigger than the problem of medical service.
Radicalization comes closer home
Salafism and Wahabism both represent the same degree of Islamic extremism except that the latter is staunchly anti-West as it carries the history of first Jehad D.C. PATHAK, NEW DELHI
T
here are fresh Intelligence warnings about Islamic radicals attempting to enter into India through the sea route off the coast of Kerala. Investigations into the horrendous terror attacks made on Easter Sunday congregations in and around Colombo, resulting in a huge loss of life and limb, are meanwhile unraveling the scale of foreign and domestic planning as well as resource mobilization that had gone into that covert offensive. The Islamic radicals chose soft targets but gave a message loud and clear that they were set to take on their US-led adversaries outside of the two theatres of ‘war on terror’ - Syria and Afghanistan. The Colombo blasts are linked with the geo-political scene of South Asia and India must now go deeply into all that could possibly threaten the future of peace on the

Indian sub continent. A disquieting trend here is that the numerous groups of Islamic fundamentalists in the region that earlier existed in parallel with the radicals operating under the umbrella of Al-Qaeda or ISIS, are giving their silent endorsement to the latter’s
call for Jehad. There is no criticism of the radicals - who are Wahabis - from within the Muslim world beyond an occasional repeat of the parroted line that ‘terrorists were not true Muslims’. It is a matter of deep concern for India that there is a rapid rise
of Salafism in the region, which in terms of extremism can match Wahabism. Salafism basically calls upon the Muslims to go back to the fundamentals of Islam that prevailed in the puritanic period of the Pious Caliphs and shun the ‘unIslamic’ practices that had developed under the influence of other religions. It is opposed to the tradition of Mazar and Dargah worship that Sufism had brought with it in some distant past. This is the transition that is now visible in Kashmir in particular. Salafism derives from al-Salaf the companions of the Prophet. As already mentioned, Salafism and Wahabism both represent the same degree of Islamic extremism except that the latter is staunchly anti-West as it carries the historical memory of the first Jehad of the modern period that some leading Ulema, including Abdul Wahab of Arabia, had launched in the Nineteenth Century to oppose
the Western encroachment on the Muslim lands. Islamic radicals of today are still motivated by that recall and consider the US-led West and their allies as their prime enemies. The Sri Lanka blasts highlight the new reality that the Salafi outfits including Lashkar-e-Toiba as also Hizbul Mujahideen of Pakistan. India is a democratic republic that uses two powerful instruments of secularism - development of all and protection of law for every citizen. India has no place for this form of extremism entering the arena of politics. The bulk of all communities in India shares the common problem of livelihood and economic uplift. Social media scan should be stepped up to detect exposure to Islamic radicalism and outreach to parents expanded to help a timely correction of young minds trapped by it.

epresentatives of opposition movements in Hong Kong on Thursday gave an ultimatum to Chief Executive Carrie Lam to permanently withdraw the controversial extradition bill or be prepared for new protests. Pro-democratic opposition newspaper Apple Daily called for fresh protests from Friday if Lam did not accept the demands by 5 p.m. on Thursday, a call which is being widely followed on social media. One of Hong Kong’s most prominent student activists, Joshua Wong, 22, who is widely known for his leading role in the 2014 pro-democracy “Umbrella” protests, told Efe news that they

did not issue the ultimatum but were backing it. “We have not set a deadline, but we will support and support what others do. This movement does not have a leader right now,” said
The ultimatum, which calls for protesters to surround the government’s headquarters on Friday in acts of civil disobedience if the demands are not met, has been supported by associations of university students and pro-democracy lawmakers. On Tuesday, Lam at a press conference offered her “most sincere apology to all people of Hong Kong” and asked its citizens to give her another opportunity so that her government could rebuild trust. The extradition bill has been met with opposition from various sectors of society on grounds that Hong Kong would lose its judicial independence and according to human rights organizations, it would allow activists, non-profit workers and journalists to be tried in a Chinese judicial system.
Pakistan court rejects Nawaz’s plea for bail IANS, ISLAMABAD
T RIYADH: A Saudi Arabian Minister has slammed a UN special rapporteur’s report claiming that there was credible evidence that Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and other high-level officials were individually liable for the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, saying the allegations were baseless. Reacting to the report by UN extrajudicial executions investigator Agnes Callamard, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Member of the Cabinet Adel Al-Jubeir (in picture) told Saudi Press Agency on Wednesday that it “regrettably, presented many unfounded accusations, including the violation of a number of international conventions, and is totally unacceptable to the leadership of the Kingdom”. Khashoggi, a Washington Post columnist and a critic of the Saudi Crown Prince, was killed and reportedly dismembered in October 2018 at the Kingdom’s consulate in Istanbul by a team of 15 agents sent from Riyadh. His body has not been found till now. the young activist when asked about the call for protests. “A lot of movement is expected in the next two weeks,” he added in reference to fresh protests demanding Lam’s resignation, the
release of those who have been detained in demonstrations and the complete withdrawal of the legislation that would allow crime suspects sent to mainland China to stand trial. “The government should begin listening to people and less to political leaders,” he warned. Meanwhile, Bonnie Leung, the spokesperson of Civil Human Rights Front, a coalition of about 50 organizations, told Efe news that “there are lots of actions initiated by different groups and individuals in the civil society” and added that her organization “would like to join them”. “But as we always stress, CHRF wants to do our best to make sure all participants will be safe legally and physically during any actions,” she said.

Sharif was sentenced in Decem-

India against hasty US deal with Taliban ARUL LOUIS, UNITED NATIONS
A
s a new round of negotiations between the US and the Taliban is to start in Qatar, India has cautioned against a hasty deal with the terror group that is dictated by a Washington timeline rather than the best interests of Afghanistan. Speaking at the Security Council on Wednesday, India’s Permanent Representative Syed Akbaruddin also said that shutting down terrorist safe havens in Pakistan must be a precondition for a peace agreement to go forward. While welcoming the international efforts for ending the Afghanistan civil war, he said: “We see that some may be driven by a

sense of an urgency with timelines which are, perhaps, not intrinsic to the needs of the Afghan people.” He also warned that terrorist organizations cannot be allowed to
negotiate from a position strength that is guaranteed to them by the sanctuaries given to them by Pakistan. Akbaruddin, however, diplomatically did not name the US or Pakistan, but his message to them was clear. “As the way forward is chalked out, we cannot ignore that groups enjoying support and safe havens carry out violent and terrorist activities from across borders,” he said. “They cannot be allowed to negotiate from a place of advantage.” “The sanctuaries and safe havens provided to terror networks have to be addressed for genuine and sustainable peace. The terrorist activities of the Taliban, Haqqani Network, Islamic State (IS), as well as
Al Qaeda and its proscribed affiliates, including the Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed, need to end.” Washington has been trying to forge a peace deal with the Taliban so that US President Donald Trump can keep his election promise of ending American involvement in Afghanistan and bringing the troops home as the campaign for next year’s election heats up. The pace of negotiations have accelerated recently and a key round of negotiations between the Taliban leaders and Zalmay Khalilzad, the US Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation, is scheduled to start this week in Doha.

In addition, there exist common myths and traditions binding the two nations together even when full nationhood had not yet been achieved. The friendship between W.B. Yeats of Ireland and India’s first Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore is well documented. There was even an attempt by the British to suggest that Geetanjali (‘An

Today the Indo-Irish connection is vibrant with Ireland’s Prime Minister Leo Varadkar being of Indian origin.
The irony of the Brexit issue is the economic windfall as a result of companies and business shifting out of London to either Ireland or Netherlands. While Ireland does not have the advantage of Rotterdam which is the Gateway to Europe, it offers hugely competitive business alternatives in a friendly English-speaking environment. Coming out of the Eurozone crisis, the Irish economy is booming with GDP growth at 4.1 per cent. Ireland is ranked among the top countries in the world to do business. Inflation remains consistently below the EU average and is supported by a weak pound sterling since the Brexit process. There are several other advantages. Ireland allows companies
barrier-free access to Europe’s 500 million consumers. The EU’s free trade agreements and the ability to attract multinational staff allow companies to trade across Europe from a single location. There is approximately 34,000 Indian-origin population in Ireland, of whom about 20,500 are people of Indian origin (PIO) and around 13,500 are non-resident Indians (NRIs). The bulk of the community is into healthcare, IT and engineering positions. The community is well regarded locally and has integrated well into Irish society. Many Indian companies are expected to shift to Ireland in the remaining time-frame leading up to October 31, 2019, which is the final deadline for Brexit.

Goans should stop eating fish: Ex-CM IANS, PANAJI

dding to the raging controversy over formalin-laced fish being sold in Goa, Nationalist Congress Party MLA and former Chief Minister Churchill Alemao has urged Goans to boycott eating fish during the monsoon months, claiming the fish imported into the state from Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh were laced with formalin. “A lot of formalin-laced fish has been already stored in Goa in cold storage facilities. For the months of June and July do not eat fish. It is a personal request. The fish being sold in Goa is laced with formalin,” Alemao told a press conference in Margao town, located 35 km south of Panaji. Alemao also said, that most of the fish imported into Goa is from

Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, where there are few cold chain facilities, as a result of which the product is sprayed with formalin before being sent to Goa, which
takes around 48 hours by road. “It is cheaper for them to spray formalin than to keep changing ice every few hours...” Alemao said, while warning locals against eating
fish because of the carcinogenic qualities of formalin, or formaldehyde - a chemical used primarily in morgues to preserve cadavers. Citing a laboratory report, the Congress party alleged last week that formalin use to preserve fish was rampant in Goa, and urged the BJPled coalition government to increase efforts to rein in the menace. State Health Minister Vishwajit Rane has, however, rubbished the allegations, claiming that all fish coming into the state from neighboring areas was being scanned for use of formalin by the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) teams. The controversy involving use of formalin in fish erupted in July last year, after an FDA team found traces of formalin in fish being sold in a South Goa fish market during a raid.

have become something of a wardrobe classic. They are universally stylish and everyone owns a pair. They are the go to jeans for low-key days. For a chic and stylish look, pair your high waist skinny jeans with a bustier top or a fitted crop top. Layer them with a smart casual blazer and stilettos for a soiree or a fancy evening. Culottes: Culottes epitomise the versatility and stylishness of the modern city girl. With a wider silhouette and mid-calf length, denim culottes are the ‘street style stopper’ of the season. Braces won’t guarantee happiness, self-confidence SYDNEY: Braces can help you get straight teeth but it may not always bring happiness and self-confidence, a study suggests. Published in the journal Orthodontics and Craniofacial Research, the study followed 448 13year-old kids from South Australia in 1988 and 1989. By the time that they turned 30 in 2005 and 2006 more than a third of them had received orthodontic treatment. “The study, examined if having braces lead to a greater level of happiness or psychosocial out-
comes, later in life. There was a pattern of higher psychosocial scores in people who did not have orthodontic treatment meaning people who hadn’t had braces fitted were significantly more optimistic than the ones that did have braces,” said Esma Dogramaci, Professor at the University of Adelaide. “Those who didn’t have braces had varying levels of crooked teeth, just like those who had braces treatment — ranging from mild through to very severe,” Dogramaci said. —IANS
Downward tilt makes you look dominant IANS, TORONTO
R
esearchers have found that tucking the chin and lowering the head by just 10 degrees makes people seem more dominating. The study, published in the journal Psychological Science, shows that facial features are not the only source of this information, we also draw social inferences from the head itself. “We show that tilting one’s head downward systematically changes the way the face is perceived, such that a neutral face, a face with no muscle movement or facial expression, appears to be more dominant
when the head is tilted down,” said researchers Zachary Witkower and Jessica Tracy of the University of British Columbia. This effect is caused by the fact that tilting one’s head downward leads to the artificial appearance of lowered and V-shaped eyebrows, which in turn elicit perceptions of aggression, intimidation and dominance. Subtle shifts of the head can have profound effects on social perception, partly because they can have large effects on the appearance of the face, said the researchers. For the findings, the research team designed a series of studies to
investigate whether the angle of head position might influence social perception, even when facial features remain neutral. In one online study with 101 participants, the researchers generated variations of avatars with neutral facial expressions and one of three head positions: tilted upward 10 degrees, neutral or tilted downward 10 degrees. The results showed that participants rated the avatars with downward head tilt as more dominant than those with neutral or upwardtitled heads. Ultimately, these findings could have practical implications for our everyday social interactions

Heavy red meat eaters at increased risk of death Replacing red meat with other protein sources, such as eggs and vegetables, over time may help you live longer IANS, NEW YORK
I
ncreasing red meat consumption, particularly processed red meat, is associated with a higher risk of death, researchers warned. A study published in the journal BMJ shows that replacing red meat with other protein sources, such as eggs and fish, whole grains and vegetables, over time may help you live longer. For the study, a team of researchers from Harvard University looked at the link between changes in red meat consumption over an eight-year period with mor-
tality rate during the next eight years, starting from 1986 to the end of follow-up in 2010. They used data for 53,553 US registered female nurses, aged between 30 and 55, and 27,916 male health professionals in the US, aged between 40 and 75, who were free of cardiovascular disease and cancer at the start of the study. Every four years the participants were given a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) where they were asked how often, on an average, they ate each food of standard portion size in the past year. They were then divided into five categories based on their changes in
Poor oral health linked with liver cancer risk LONDON: Poor oral health is associated with a 75 per cent increased risk of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), the most common form of liver cancer, a study suggests. Published in the United European Gastroenterology Journal, the study investigated the association between oral health conditions and the risk of a number of gastrointestinal cancers, including liver, colon, rectum and pancreatic cancer. Models were applied to estimate the relationship between cancer risk and self-reported oral health conditions, such as painful or bleeding gums, mouth ulcers and loose teeth. “Poor oral health has been associ-
ated with the risk of several chronic diseases, such as heart disease, stroke and diabetes”, said the study lead author Haydee WT Jordao from Queen’s University Belfast. Of the 469,628 participants from the UK, 4,069 developed gastrointestinal cancer during the (average) six-year follow up. In 13 per cent of these cases, patients reported poor oral health, said the researchers.
red meat intake. During the study period, the total number of deaths from any cause reached 14,019 (8,426 women and 5,593 men) and the leading causes were cardiovascular disease, cancer, respiratory disease and neurodegenerative disease. After adjusting for age and other potentially influential factors, increasing total red meat intake by 3.5 servings a week or more over an eight-year period was associated with 10 per cent higher risk of death in the next eight years. Overall, reducing red meat intake was associated with a lower risk of death.
‘Personal care products dangerous’ IANS, NEW YORK

arents, take a note. Researchers have found that personal care products such as shampoo, lotion and nail polish in the hands of young children can quickly lead to poisoning or chemical burns-like life-threatening situations. Published in Clinical Pediatrics journal, the study found that more than 64,600 children below five years of age, were treated for injuries related to personal care products between 2002 and 2016 in the US. “Kids this age can’t read, so they don’t know what they are looking at. They see a bottle with a colourful label that looks or smells like something they are allowed to eat or drink, so they try to open it and take

a swallow. When the bottle turns out to be nail polish remover instead of juice, or lotion instead of yoghurt, serious injuries can occur,” said the study co-author Rebecca McAdams from Nationwide Children’s Hospital in the US.
The study found that most injuries from these products occurred when a child swallowed the product (75.7 per cent) or the product made contact with a child’s skin or eyes (19.3 per cent). These ingestions and exposures most often led to poisonings (86.2 per cent) or chemical burns (13.8 per cent). According to the researchers, the top three product categories leading to injuries were nail care products (28.3 per cent), hair care products (27.0 per cent) and skin care products (25.0 per cent), followed by fragrance products (12.7 per cent). “Since these products are often stored in easy-to-reach places and are not typically in child-resistant containers, it is easy for kids to reach and open the bottles,” McAdams said.
Evening exercise as good as morning workout: Study IANS, LONDON
C
ontrary to popular perception, researchers have found that evening exercise is as good as a morning workout. The study published in the journal Cell Metabolism shows that the effect of exercise may differ depending on the time of day it is performed. “There appear to be rather significant differences between the effect of exercise performed in the morning and evening and these differences are probably controlled by the body’s circadian clock,” said
The researchers have measured a number of effects in the muscle cells.
Jonas Thue Treebak, Associate Professor at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark.
“Morning exercise initiates gene programmes in the muscle cells, making them more effective and
better capable of metabolizing sugar and fat. Evening exercise, on the other hand, increases wholebody energy expenditure for an extended period of time,” Treebak said. For the study, the research team examined mice and found that exercise in the morning results in an increased metabolic response in skeletal muscle, while exercise later in the day increases energy expenditure for an extended period of time. The researchers have measured a number of effects in the muscle cells, including the transcriptional
response and effects on the metabolites. The results show that responses are far stronger in both areas following exercise in the morning and it is likely to be controlled by a central mechanism involving the protein HIF 1-alpha, which directly regulates the body’s circadian clock. Morning exercise appears to increase the ability of muscle cells to metabolize sugar and fat and this type of effect interests the researchers in relation to people with severe overweight and type 2 diabetes.

ith the availability of attractive data plans and higher video consumption among young users, monthly data usage per smartphone in India rose to 9.8 gigabytes (GB) at the end of 2018, the highest in the world, according to a Ericsson report on Wednesday. Monthly data usage per smartphone would grow at 11 per cent to reach 18 GB by 2024 from 9.8 GB in 2018, said the Ericsson Mobility Report. The mobile data traffic a month in India was expected to increase at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 23 per cent to 16 exabytes (EB) by 2024 from 4.6 EB in 2018, it added. subscriptions are expected to grow during this period,” Nitin Bansal, Head of Ericsson India and Head of Network Solutions, South East Asia, Oceania and India, said in a statement. The total mobile subscriptions in the world was around 7.9 billion in the first quarter of 2019, with 44
million subscriptions added in the quarter. However, in India, the number of subscriptions declined by 14 million, mainly due to introduction of a minimum regular recharge amount by some large operators to tackle low-paying users and increase average revenue per user (ARPU), the report added. The number of smartphone subscriptions is forecast to reach 7.2 billion in 2024. At the end of 2018, there were 5.1 billion smartphone subscribers globally, 99 per cent of which were for 3G and 4G, said the report. The smartphone subscription in India would reach 1.1 billion by 2024, growing at 11 per cent, whereas the mobile broadband subscription in the region might grow at 13 per cent to 1.25 billion in 2024 from 610 million in 2018.

users across products -- aiming to create another stable revenue stream and make cryptocurrecnybased payments mainstream. It is, however, unclear how regulators worldwide would take this as cryptocurrency market has been unregulated so far and several countries, including India, do not accept it as legal tender.

Twitter removes precise US ban will cost Huawei $30bn: CEO location tagging on app IANS, SHENZHEN
SAN FRANCISCO: Micro-blogging site Twitter has decided to eliminate the option of letting users add their precise location details like latitude and longitude as part of their tweets. “Most people don’t tag their precise location in tweets, so we’re removing this ability to simplify your tweeting experience,” Twitter Support posted on Wednesday. However, the company said users would still be able to add precise location tags in tweets captured through the app’s camera.
“You’ll still be able to tag your in tweets through our updated camera. It’s helpful when sharing on-theground moments,” the company added. While the announcement gathered several newer reactions, comments and opinions, some users stuck to their demand asking the micro-blogging site to add the abilility to edit tweets on the platform. Undocumented Immigrants will Receive NY Driver’s Licenses
BY A STAFF WRITER NEW YORK, NY- A bill that would permit undocumented immigrants to obtain driver’s licenses passed in the State Assembly Wednesday. Green Light NY, formally known as the Driver’s License Access and Privacy Act, passed by an 86-47 vote and now awaits a vote in the state Senate. It’s unclear when that vote might take place as the legislative session ends June 19. The bill would allow undocumented immigrants access to the “standard” license, one of three license types the federal government will unveil in October 2020. Historically, undocumented residents in New York were allowed to have driver’s licenses if they passed the required tests and proved their residency. In 2001, former governor George Pataki reversed the measure via executive order. Currently, only 12 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico allow undocumented immigrants to have driver’s licenses. Supporters of the legislation launched a statewide lobbying effort this spring. At a rally held in Riverhead in March, more than a hundred people marched down Roanoke Avenue to Main Street and then east all the way to Route 58, ending at the Department of Motor Vehicles parking lot. Organizers said that allowing all New York residents, regardless of immigration status, access to driver’s licenses would improve public safety, provide a boost to the state’s economy and allow immigrants to navigate their communities without fear. Data from the Fiscal Policy Institute suggests that 51,000 undocumented Long Islanders could be impacted by the bill and the state could recevie an estimated $57 million in new revenue. Under the legislation, undocumented license applicants must pass a driving test and be made aware of traffic laws to help ensure they are operating registered, inspected and insured vehicles. Increased fees generated from new licenses would continue to be earmarked for the dedicated Highway and Bridge Trust fund, which helps fix transportation infrastructure, officials said. Assemblyman Anthony Palumbo (R-New Suffolk) did not support the measure. South Fork Assemblyman Fred Thiele (I-Sag Harbor) cited public safety as his reason for supporting the bill. He also noted that public transportation isn’t widely available on the East End.

Amma’s Chicago Area Visit on July 11-13, 2019 BY A STAFF WRITER CHICAGO,IL World-renowned humanitarian and spiritual leader Sri Mata Amritanandamayi Devi (Amma) will conduct her 32nd annual summer tour of North America, beginning in Seattle on June 06 and concluding in Toronto on July 18. Amma will visit 10 cities during the tour: Seattle (Bellevue), Bay Area (San Ramon), Los Angeles, Santa Fe, Dallas, Atlanta, Washington D.C. (Arlington), New York, Boston (Marlborough), Chicago (Elburn), and Toronto. Programs include guided meditation, devotional singing, and a spiritual talk by Amma offering practical solutions for personal fulfillment as well as the most pressing challenges facing today’s world. Program attendees also can receive Amma’s darshan—a spiritual blessing in the form of a physical motherly embrace. To date, Amma has embraced well over 35 million people globally. Amma’s programs are run entirely by volunteers. Funds raised from retreats as well as from the sale of food, books, and gifts -available at the programs- directly support the humanitarian projects of “Embracing the World”, Amma’s global network of charities. Embracing the World projects
Sri Mata Amritanandamayi Devi (Amma)
include orphanages, homes for the homeless, scholarships for poor children, hospitals, disaster relief, and microfinance-powered initiatives for women. Amma has been conducting spiritual programs in her home country of India since the mid-1970s. At the request of people in
Europe and the United States, she began giving similar programs outside India from 1987. Amma says that her life is dedicated to trying to awaken love and compassion within individuals all over the world. Amma feels these qualities are essential for world peace and harmony. “In today’s world, people experience two types of poverty: the poverty caused by lack of food, clothing, and shelter, and the poverty caused by lack of love and compassion,” Amma says. “Of these two, the second type needs to be considered first because if we have love and compassion in our hearts, then we will wholeheartedly serve those who suffer from lack of food, clothing and shelter.” Mata Amritanandamayi (AMMA) | 2019 North American Tour Page 2 CHICAGO PROGRAM INFORMATION: (Four free public programs) • Thursday, July 11 - 7:30 pm to 3:00 am (approximate) • Friday, July 12 - 11:00 am to 11:00 pm (approximate) • Saturday, July 13 - 10:00 am to 2:00 pm (approximate) & “Devi bhava” from 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. (approximate) Venue: MA Center Chicago, 41W501 Keslinger Rd, Elburn, IL 60119. 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi Celebrated in Skokie BY A STAFF WRITER CHICAGO, IL: World Environment Day and to commemorate the 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, Members of Gandhi Memorial Chicago [GMC], supported by the Consulate General of India [CGI], Chicago and in partnership with the Village of Skokie at Gandhi Statue in Heritage Park at McCormick Blvd’ Tree Planting Event was on Wednesday, June 05, 2019 at 11:30 noon. United Nations had declared June 5, 2019 as the Environment Day and urged the citizens of the world to plant as many trees as they could around them. The GMC determined that the surrounding of the statue of Mahatma Gandhi, in the Skokie Sculpture Park, would be an ideal place to celebrate this event. As the event began, Hon. George Van Dusen, Mayor of Skokie, arrived right on time at Gandhi statue at 11.30 a.m. The CGI and the Consulate staff had already arrived. Amidst a gathering of score of guests, the Master of Ceremony, Shri Satish Chander,
started the program with the singing of ‘Raghu Pati Raghav Raja Ram’. He also guided the enthusiastic crowd to the whole-hearted loud slogan of ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’. This Mayor addressed the crowd followed by CGI who spoke about the significance of Environment Day. From thereon, the Skokie Forester Cathy
took control of the proceedings. She had pre- selected five spots in the ground around Gandhi statue to plant two shady and three flowering trees in the area. Refreshments, tea and water bottles served to the guests. Dr. C.M. Modi, MD, Chairperson (GMC) happily interacted with the guests.
Two Indian American Pennsylvania doctors found not guilty on drug charges
BY A STAFF WRITER MOON TOWNSHIP, PA. — After 9 day trial, A federal trial ends in ‘not guilty’ verdicts for two local Indian American doctors Dr. Krishan Kumar Aggarwal, of Moon Township, Pennsylvania, and Dr. Cherian John, of Coraopolis, Pennsylvania, . The pair faced more than a dozen combined charges for unlawfully prescribing Suboxone. Both doctors had prominent, long-time practices in Weirton. Dr. Cherian John is a cardiologist, practicing for the last 33 years. Dr. Krishan Aggarwal has seen patients for 42 years as a physician. Both, on donated time, worked for Suboxone clinics in an effort to combat the drug epidemic in the Ohio Valley and Pittsburgh areas, but the government questioned their intent. “Dr. Aggarwal is 75 years old. Most people would be riding off in the sunset and retired. He lost a nephew in India to drug addiction,” said Aggarwal’s attorney, Mike Nogay. “ His motives were pure and altruistic...The jury saw that.” The defense called 19 witnesses to the stand. Nine of them were patients who gave credit to both doctors for changing their lives in a positive way. Two experts in the drug field also testified. The doctors were found not guilty on 14 combined charges. “Notwithstanding the verdict, we remain steadfast in our intention to prosecute matters which we believe, based upon the evidence, support prosecution. Jury trials are an adversarial process and do not provide guaranteed results. Though we disagree with the jury in this case, the jury has spoken and that is part of the process, which we have the utmost respect for. Our team worked very hard and this verdict will not deter our efforts on the opioid front,” United States Attorney Bill Powell said.

Why Fall Prevention is Important: Falls are Major Threat to the Health BY A STAFF WRITER CHICAGO, IL- Falls are a major threat to the health and independence of older adults. Each year, one in three older adults aged 65 and older experiences a fall, and people who fall once are two to three times more likely to fall again. Falls can be devastating. Falls are the leading cause of nonfatal injuries among older adults. One out of ten falls causes a serious injury, such as a hip fracture or head injury, which requires hospitalization. In addition to the physical and emotional pain, many people need to spend at least a year recovering in a long-term care facility. Some are never able to live independently again. Understanding fall risk factors Falls are not an inevitable consequence of aging. However, falls do occur more often among older adults because fall risk factors increase with age. A fall risk factor is something that increases a person’s chances of falling. This may be a biological characteristic, a behavior, or an aspect of the environment. These risk factors include: Biological risk factors – Muscle weakness or balance problems – Medication side effects and/or interactions – Chronic health conditions such as arthritis and stroke – Vision changes and vision loss – Loss of sensation in feet Behavioral risk factors – Inactivity – Risky behaviors such as standing on a chair in place of a step stool – Alcohol use Environmental risk factors – Clutter and tripping hazards – Poor lighting – Lack of stair railings – Lack of grab bars inside and outside the tub or shower – Poorly designed public spaces. Usually two or more risk factors interact to cause a fall (such as poor balance and low vision) (Rubenstein and Josephson 2006). The more risk factors a person has, the greater their
chances of falling (Tinetti et al., 1986). Home or environmental risk factors play a role in about half of all falls (Bergen et al., 2008). Understanding these risk factors is the first step to reducing older adult falls. Over the past two decades, researchers around the world have identified fall risk factors and used randomized controlled trials (RCT), to test fall interventions. RCTs are considered the “gold standard” for evaluating an intervention’s effectiveness. The results of these studies show that reducing fall risk factors significantly reduces falls among community dwelling older adults—that is, people living independently in the community. Many older adults, as well as their family members and caregivers, are unaware of factors or behaviors that put them at risk of falling. They are also unaware of actions they can take to reduce their risk. Fall risk factor assessment is rarely part of an older adult’s routine health care, even if they have had a fall or fall injury. All older adults should be encouraged to seek an individual fall risk assessment from their health care providers, especially older adults with a history of falls and/or with mobility or
balance problems. Who are at highest risk for falls. A fall risk assessment is covered in the annual Medicare Wellness Visit. To help older adults better understand their fall risk, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Injury Center helped develop the Stay Independent brochure. This is a validated fall risk self-assessment tool that can be used in clinical or community settings to raise awareness about fall risks as well as help older adults begin to discuss this sensitive topic with their health care providers. The Stay Independent brochure is available at: www.cdc. gov/STEADI. Additional research reveals that a physical therapist-prescribed exercise program targeting balance and strength can be effective in improving a number of balance and related outcomes in older people with mild balance impairment. Physical Therapy Solutions is offering a FREE FALL RISK ASSESSMENT consultation, please call: 847-240-2000 to schedule your consultation (this is a limited time offer). Physical Therapy Solutions is the only facility in the northwest suburbs of Chicago with
a comprehensive balance and fall risk program along with a strengthening program. Assisted with a medical history from your doctor, we can perform specific tests to determine your ability to maintain your balance as well as your risk of falling. Our computerized equilibrium tests can evaluate the sensory and motor parts of your balance system. Sensory tests assess inner ears, eyes and sense of touch in your feet and joints that contribute to balance control. Our motor tests will measure your ability to execute coordinated movements, both voluntary and involuntary, to maintain your balance. All of these tests will help define the cause of your balance problem and are the foundation of devising a unique, individualized program for you. We utilize a state-of-the-art balance machine and our balance therapy programs have a 98% balance improvement success rate.
