US TECH GIANTS CRITICISE TRUMP’S DECISION TO SUSPEND WORK VISAS Trump’s visa suspension ‘mildly negative’ for Indian IT firms, says rating agency ICRA

U

S president Donald Trump signed an executive order suspending the various categories of visas for immigrants till the end of this year. But the move, a domestic rating agency said, is a “mildly negative” development for the Indian IT companies. “The temporary suspension of issuance of fresh H-1B visas and L-1 visas (intercompany transfer) till December 2020 in view of the impact of Covid-19

pandemic on the US economy and employment will be mildly negative for the Indian IT services sector,” ratings agency Investment and Credit Rating Agency (ICRA) said. The agency said that the petitions of India-based companies saw a 63 per cent decline in approval last year, compared to 2015. It said that only 6,855 H1-B visa applications were approved. The agency attributed the decline sponsor employer’s inability to establish that the position is a specialty occupation, inability to substantiate a valid employer-employee relationship and lack of evidence of specific assignment at third party sites for the entire visa durations requested. As a result, companies are relying less on such visas and building up domestic workforce in

the United States, the ICRA said. “Cloud computing, digital services and automation are being used to reduce the reliance on manpower.” However, the ICRA said, Trump’s decision will hamper execution of projects in the pipeline and new projects, and also dent margins because of higher local hiring activity. Trump has directed his officials to separately overhaul the H-1B programme to turn it meritbased by prioritising highest paid applicants. The suspended work visas included H-1B, H-2B for low skill workers, some categories of J visas for cultural and education workers and L-1 for intra-company transfers. They were intended to ensure Americans had the first shot at jobs in the aftermath of record

Now is not the time to cut our nation off from the world’s talent or create uncertainty and anxiety. Immigrants play a vital role at our company and support our country’s critical infrastructure. They are contributing to this country at a time when we need them most

Trump to extend pause on immigration visas in interest ofAmerican workers, says White House job losses caused by Covid-19 related lockdowns, and are expected to free up 5,25,000 jobs. The decision came as Trump od seeking re-election in the presidential election scheduled for November this year.

China used Covid-19 to lash out in every direction: US Senator HiIndia Newsdesk

Stating that China continues its premeditated military incursion along the border with India, a top American Senator has alleged that Beijing has used the Covid-19 pandemic to lash out in every direction. “China in particular has used the pandemic to lash out in every direction. They’ve antagonized and harassed Taiwanese, Malaysian, Vietnamese, and Indonesian vessels in the South China Sea; and used every tool in their shed to coerce Australia into silence about Covid-19,” alleged Senator Jim Inhofe, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee. “And now 20 Indian soldiers are dead – some killed by what are essentially baseball bats with spikes – as China continues its premeditated military incursion along the border with India,” Inhofe said on the Senate floor

Senator Jim Inhofe, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee said China and Russia do not disclose their original defense budgets.

in support of the National Defense Authorization Act of Fiscal Year 2021. The National Defense Authorization Act for 2021 is all about sending a message to China and Russia, he said. It says, “There is no way you can defeat us — so don’t even try.” “We know that the way we preserve peace is by demonstrating our strength. We have the best military in the world — and our enemies need to know that. But we can’t rest on our laurels. We must implement the National Defense Strategy because our comparative military advantage is at risk right now. China and Russia are catching up to us — and quickly,” Inhofe said.

As US reopens, Covid-19 cases hit new high; Trump administration downplays Several states like Arizona, Arkansas, the Carolinas, Mississippi, Tennessee, Texas and Utah have recently reported new highs in the number of coronavirus patients hospitalized.

HiIndia Newsdesk The United States reported more than 39,000 new coronavirus cases on Thursday, its highest-ever single-day count as the government relaxed restrictions and is downplaying the threat of the deadly virus. According to the Washington Post, experts believe there is a troubling lack of consistent, unified messaging from President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence. They have downplayed the danger and denigrated effective disease defences such as mask-wearing, testing, and social distancing. Churches, beaches, and bars are filling up with people and so are hospital beds, the report said. The counties home to Dallas, Phoenix, and Tampa all reported record-high averages on at least 15 straight days in June. The hardest-hit states are California, Texas, Florida and those that thought they had the virus under control, like Utah and Oregon. “I think the politicians are in denial,” said Kami Kim, director of the Division of Infectious Disease and International Medicine at the University of South Florida.

NYC judge rejects Trump family Protesters raise demand to remove statues of slave kneeling before Lincoln effort to halt tell-all book HiIndia Newsdesk

A New York City judge has dismissed a claim by Donald Tr ump’s brot her that sought to halt the publication of a tell-all book by the president’s niece, saying the court lacked jurisdiction in the case.Surrogates Court Judge Peter Kelly said the claims were not appropriate for his court, where disputes over estate matters are settled. The motion filed earlier this week sought an injunction to prevent Mary Trump and the book’s publisher, Simon & Schuster, from releasing it, as scheduled, in July. Mary Trump is the daughter of Fred Trump Jr., the president’s elder brother,

who died in 1981. An online description of her book, Too Much and Never Enough: How My Family Created the World’s Most Dangerous Man,” says it reveals a nightmare of traumas, destructive relationships, and a tragic combination of neglect and abuse”. Robert Trump’s lawyers filed court papers arguing that Mary Trump and others had signed a settlement agreement that would prohibit her from writing the book. The settlement decades ago included a confidentially clause explicitly saying they would not publish any account concerning the litigation or their relationship, unless they all agreed.

US reviewing its global force posture to counter China’s threat to India: Pompeo

China trying to foist war-like situation along LAC, says India

"We're going to make sure we're postured appropriately to counter the PLA. We think that the challenge of our times, and we're going to make sure we have resources in HiIndia Newsdesk place to do that," Pompeo said.

The US is reviewing its global deployment of forces to ensure it is postured appropriately to counter the People’s Liberation Army, given the increasing threat posed by China to Asian countries like India, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Thursday. Pompeo made those remarks in response to a question during the virtual Brussels Forum 2020 of the German Marshall Fund. “We’re going to make sure we’re postured appropriately to counter the PLA. We think that the challenge of our times, and we’re going to make sure we have resources in place to do that,” Pompeo said. The force posture review is being done at the direction of President Donald Trump, as part of which the US is reducing the number of its troops in Germany from about 52,000 to 25,000, he said. Pompeo said that the force posture would be dictated by the ground realities. “In certain places there will be fewer American resources. There’ll be other places – I just talked about the threat from the Chinese Communist Party, so now threats to India, threats to Vietnam, threats to Malaysia, Indonesia, South China Sea challenges, the Philippines,” he said.

HiIndia Newsdesk India has accused China of turning the bilateral relationship clock back to 1990s by trying to foist a war-like situation along the 3,488-kilometre-long Line of Actual Control (LAC) through its aggressive military posture in East Ladakh. Short of saying that Xi Jinping, who is also commander in chief of the PLA, had literally torn the 1993 peace and tranquility agreement to shreds, the Modi government has served a diplomatic ultimatum on him with serious consequences on the bilateral ties. The 1993 agreement signed during Narasimha Rao-Jiang Zemin era makes it amply clear that the military forces have to be kept to a “minimum level” along the LAC.

‘Distressing allegation’: Bhutan rejects reports ‘I am Indira Gandhi’s granddaughter’: Priyanka dares UP on irrigation water stoppage to Assam HiIndia Newsdesk Bhutan on Friday rejected the media reports claiming that it has stopped the supply of irrigation water to farmers in Assam, terming them “totally baseless” and a “deliberate attempt” by vested interests to cause misunderstanding with India. In a statement, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Royal Government of Bhutan, said that since June 24, 2020, there have been several news articles published in India alleging that Bhutan has blocked water channels that supply irrigation water to Indian farmers in Baksa and Udalguri districts in Assam adjoining Samdrup Jongkhar district.

Assam announces 14-day complete lockdown in Guwahati HiIndia Newsdesk Following a spurt in Covid-19 cases in Assam, a 12-hour night curfew will be imposed across the northeastern state 7 pm onwards on Friday and a 14-day complete lockdown in Kamrup district, which includes the Guwahati city, from Sunday midnight. Out of 762 coronavirus cases recorded in Guwahati since June 15, 677 have no travel history, though many had come in contact with returnees from other states, Assam Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said. With India registering 407 deaths and 17,296 coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, the total number of infections crossed the 4.9 lakh-mark to

reach 4,90,401 including 15,301 fatalities, 1,89,463 active cases, and 2,85,636 people who have been treated and discharged so far. On Thursday, the number of recoveries was 96,173 more than the number of active cases. The Centre announced it will be sending a team of experts to Telangana, Maharashtra and Gujarat — three states with high positivity rates that are considered critical in the efforts against the pandemic. Sources said experts may also be sent to Tamil Nadu and West Bengal, which are also seen as requiring advice and assistance on clinical management. The Centre is already closely monitoring the Covid-19 situation in Delhi, the city with the most number of cases.

govt to act against her

The Uttar Pradesh child rights panel and Agra district administration had sent notices to Priyanka Gandhi, accusing her of posting “misleading” tweets on Covid-19 situation in the state. HiIndia Newsdesk Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi has dared the Uttar Pradesh government to take whatever action it wants against her, but she will keep highlighting the truth. “As a public servant my duty is towards the people of Uttar Pradesh, and that duty is to bring the truth in front of them. My duty is not to propagate the government propaganda. Uttar Pradesh government is wasting its time in trying to threaten me. Take whatever action you want to, I will keep highlighting the truth. I am the granddaughter of Indira Gandhi, not an undeclared spokesperson of the BJP like some leaders,” she tweeted in Hindi on Friday. Gandhi has been attacking the Uttar Pradesh government in various issues, including the spread of the coronavirus disease in the state. On Sunday, the Congress leader in a Facebook post cited a media report to claim that 57 girls tested positive for coronavirus at the state-run child shelter home in Kanpur, with two girls being “found” pregnant, including one HIV+.

aniniu Laizer earned ÂŁ2.4m ($3.4m) from the country's mining ministry for the gemstones, which had a combined weight of 15kg (33 lb). "There will be a big party tomorrow," Mr Laizer, a father of more than 30 children. Tanzanite is only found in northern Tanzania and is used to make ornaments. It is one of the rarest gemstones on Earth, and one local geologist estimates its supply may be entirely depleted within the next 20 years. The precious stone's appeal lies in its variety of hues, including green, red, purple and blue. Its value is determined by rarity - the finer the colour or clarity, the higher the price. Mr Laizer mined the stones, weighing 9.2kg and 5.8kg, last week, but he sold them on Wednesday during a trading event in the northern region of Manyara. Until now the largest Tanzanite rock to be mined weighed 3.3kg. President John Magufuli phoned in to congratulate Mr Laizer on the find. "This is the benefit of small-scale miners and this proves that Tanzania is rich," the president said. Mr Magufuli came to power in 2015 promising to safeguard the nation's interest in the mining sector and increase the government's revenue from it. Mr Laizer, 52, who has four wives, said he would slaughter one of his cows to celebrate.

Paris's Eiffel Tower reopens as restrictions further lifted in France HiIndia Newsdesk Paris [France],: The Eiffel Tower, one of the main symbols of France, reopened on Thursday after having been shut for three months due to COVID-19 restrictions introduced by the government in midMarch, the official site announced. "The Eiffel Tower opens on June 25th for tours up to the 2nd floor, by stairs only from June 25th to 30th, then by elevator also from July 1st," a statement read. France is continuing to emerge from a two-month lockdown over the coronavirus epidemic by the further reopening of public places and various facilities. In particular, museums and other cultural attractions have started to gradually resume operations since the beginning of June. However, as the virus is still active in so-called red areas of the country, certain health measures remain in effect, including hygiene rules and a ban on mass gatherings.

Trump to extend pause on US tech giants criticise immigration visas in interest of Trump's decision to American workers, says White House suspend work visas HiIndia Newsdesk

Washington D.C. [USA: US President Donald Trump will prolong a ban on US employment permits to year-end and broaden it to include H1-B visas used widely in the tech industry to ensure American workers take first priority as the nation starts recovering from the economic effects of the coronavirus pandemic, the White House said on Monday. "President Trump is extending the pause on new immigrant visas through the end of the year to ensure we

continue putting American workers first during our ongoing coronavirus recovery," the White House said. "President Trump is building on this measure with an additional pause on several job-related non-immigrant visas--H-1Bs, H-2Bs without a nexus to the food-supply chain, certain H-4s, as well as Ls and certain Js--preserving jobs for American citizens," it added. The statement also noted that many workers have been hurt through no fault of their own due to coronavirus and they should not remain on the sidelines while being replaced by new foreign labour. The new policy is "extending and expanding" on Trump's April pause on issuing new green cards, which will continue beyond the initial 60-day period until the end of the year, according to a senior administration official. The move would free up 525,000 jobs, making a dent in the high unemployment rate caused by the coronavirus pandemic, the official added.

Microsoft president Brad Smith said the timing of Trump's decision was bad, and added that immigrants were playing an important role at this time of crisis. The White House, earlier in the day, announced that the restrictions were put in place to ensure American workers get first priority as the nation starts recovering from the economic effects of the coronavirus pandemic. The order freezes new H1-B and H-4 visas, used by technology workers and their families, as well as L visas for intracompany transfers and most J visas.

His remarks will however have no bearing on England’s u p c o m i n g Te s t series against West Indies,

We’ve been round it many times with our scientific friends. “At the moment, we’re still working on ways to make cricket more Covid-secure but we can’t change the guidance yet.” Johnson announced a raft of measures to relax the lockdown in England, but recreational cricket was not one of them, dealing a blow to the country’s non-professional leagues. Clark said half of summer cricket has been lost and asked the PM if the game could be resumed now.

Covid-19 pandemic:

Depression and anxiety rise among NEW MOMS

Experiencing depression and anxiety during pregnancy and the postpartum period can have detrimental effects on the mental and physical health of both mother and baby that can persist for years.

he likelihood of maternal depression and anxiety has substantially increased during the coronavirus crisis, according to a study published in Frontiers in Global Women’s Health. “The social and physical isolation measures that are critically needed to reduce the spread of the virus are taking a toll on the physical and mental health of many of us,” said Dr. Margie Davenport of the University of Alberta, Canada, who co-authored the study. For new moms, those stresses come with side effects. “We know that experiencing depression and anxiety during pregnancy and the postpartum period can have detrimental effects on the mental and physical health of both mother and baby that can persist for years,” said Davenport. Such effects can include premature delivery, reduced mother-infant bonding, and developmental delays in infants. The study surveyed 900 women - 520 of whom were pregnant and 380 of whom had given birth in the past year - and asked about their depression and anxiety symptoms before and during the pandemic. Before the pandemic began, 29 percent of those women experienced moderate to high anxiety symptoms, and 15 percent experienced depressive symptoms. During the pandemic, those numbers increased - 72 percent experienced anxiety and 41percent experienced depression. Because lockdown measures have affected daily routines and access to gyms, researchers also asked women whether their exercise habits had changed. Of the women surveyed, 64 percent reduced their physical activity since the pandemic began, while 15 percent increased and 21 percent experienced no change. Exercise is a known way to ease depression symptoms, so limited physical activity may result in an uptick in depressive symptoms. Indeed, the study found that women who engaged in at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity a week had significantly lower symptoms of depression and anxiety. The findings are somewhat limited given the fact that researchers could not survey women before the

The women surveyed could only offer their pre-pandemic symptoms in hindsight. Also, while the researchers asked women about their symptoms using validated measures, only mental health care professionals can validly diagnose an individual with depression or anxiety. The study was specifically interested in the impact of COVID-19 on new moms, but Davenport says maternal mental health is a critical issue no matter the time. “Even when we are not in a global pandemic, many pregnant and postpartum women frequently feel isolated whether due to being hospitalized, not having family or friends around or other reasons,” she said. “It is critical to increasing awareness of the impact of social (and physical) isolation on the mental health of pregnant and postpartum women,” Davenport added. Increased awareness makes diagnosis and treatment the ultimate goal - more likely.

Yoga may help ease When to wear a mask depressive symptoms and when you can skip it

In today’s scenario, it is important for everyone to realise that mental health is equally as important as physical health. It is something which should never be ignored as it can leads to an unhealthy life. Yoga is one of the key to lead a happy and prospers life.

T

his International Day of Yoga, more and more studies and research discussing the many benefits of yoga are being published, especially it’s benefits on mental health. Mental illness is not something

new to this world, but in times of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and ensuing lockdown put in place to curb its spread, it has become grave. With people increasingly living isolated lives for the last three months, the situation is getting worse day by day. With millions of recorded cases and deaths, the infectious disease has seen a rise in depression, anxiety disorder, domestic violence and sexual abuse, with cases reported from across the country. According to research published online in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, depression is the leading cause of disability worldwide, affecting more than 340 million people. And depressive symptoms often go hand in hand with other mental health issues, such as generalised anxiety and psychotic disorders. A recent study concluded with a systematic review and meta-analysis of existing research suggests that yoga may help ease depressive symptoms in people with other mental health issues. While sharing his experience on Yoga, Sourabh Tiwari, Assistant Professor, Manipal University Jaipur told ANI, “I was never a Yoga person, but during the early days of lockdown I was frustrated and disturbed. I was not able to concentrate on work, I decided to start Yoga and morning walks. This getting up early in the morning and doing Yoga helped me a lot in achieving my mental peace.”

P

hysician and infectious disease specialist Muge Cevik, who has been a prescient guide to relative risks, pointed out to me that maskwearing should be informed by other studies on how the virus spreads. A consensus is finally starting to form that there’s a negligible risk outdoors away from other people, and that very brief encounters pose very little risk, such as people walking, running or cycling past you. Common sense would suggest that if an activity poses negligible risk, then wearing a mask offers only a negligible benefit, and should be optional. Mask wearing is likely to do the most good in settings where people have little choice

but to interact in enclosed spaces — grocery shopping, riding public transportation, ride-sharing, getting a haircut, or seeing a doctor. Also in this middle category is gathering outdoors in large groups — such as at a protest. If most protestors wear a mask at all times, this will likely reduce transmissions. Cevik, who works at the University of St. Andrews in the U.K., pointed out that the six-foot rule applies best outdoors, while in badly ventilated indoor settings, aerosol particles might accumulate and put people at risk even if they never get that close to others. And length of exposure matters a lot, so bus drivers, haircutters and store clerks face a much higher risk than their customers.

Why sufficient sleep is important Diabetes could contribute to infertility, warn experts

G

etting enough sleep is key to good health, as researchers say that insufficient sleep increases the risk of serious problems, including cardiovascular disease. The team of researchers from Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) have identified a previously unknown mechanism by which sleep protects against the buildup of arterial plaques, providing a potential treatment option. Their study described the mechanism between brain, bone marrow and blood vessels, by which insufficient sleep increases inflammatory white blood cells known to be major contributors to hardening of the arteries, reports Xinhua.

New drug to delay ageing discovered NEW YORK: Researchers, including one of Indian origin, have developed a new drug that can delay ageing demonstrated by declining muscle mass, strength and function. In the study, researchers from the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) at Galveston identified a protein called Nicotinamide N-methyltransferase (NNMT) in muscle stem cells that appears to be responsible for the age-related dysfunction. They developed a small molecule drug, NNMT inhibitor (NNMTi), which when prescribed to aged mice could limit NNMT’s effects as well as significantly increase muscle size. —IANS

“We have discovered that sleep helps to regulate the production in the bone marrow of inflammatory cells and the health of blood vessels and that, conversely, sleep disruption breaks down control of inflammatory cell production,

leading to more inflammation and more heart disease,” said co-author Filip Swirsk. “We have identified how a hormone in the brain known to control wakefulness controls processes in the bone marrow,” he added.

NEW DELHI: Diabetes, commonly described as a “lifestyle disease”, can contribute to infertility in both women and men, warn health experts. “Diabetes can cause infertility in both men and women. Both sexes are at equal risk of infertility,” SK Wangnoo, endocrinologist at Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, told IANS. Infertility affects up to 15 per cent of reproductive-aged couples worldwide. According to an estimate by the World Health Organization (WHO), the overall prevalence of primary infertility in India is between 3.9% to 16.8%. “Diabetes in men dam-

ages DNA of the sperm and leads to reduced number of sperms and reduced motility of sperms which leads to infertility. Although having diabetes does not necessarily make men infertile, it could make them less fertile,” added Roopak Wadhwa, Consultant at Fortis Hospital, New Delhi. While, diabetes in women is associated with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and other autoimmune diseases that can lead to infertility. “Diabetes causes a lack of glucose control which, in turn, can make fertile egg’s implantation in the uterus difficult...” Wadhwa said. —IANS

Breast cancer: Is mammography test necessary? IANS, NEW DELHI

A

woman under 40, with no known breast cancer risk or visible symptoms of the deadly disease, need not take regular mammography tests, say health experts. According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a mammogram is an X-ray picture of the breast, used as a screening tool for the detection of early breast cancer in asymptomatic women. “If a woman doesn’t have symptoms of breast cancer then regular mammography tests before the age of 40 are not recommended,” Ramesh Sarin, Senior Consultant (Surgical Oncology) at

If there is any lump in the breast, then mammography should be done. (Photo: Pexels)

Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, New Delhi, told IANS. If there is any lump in the breast, then mammography should

be done. “Those with increased risk (which is decided by clinician analysing multiple parameters) can begin screening at a younger age

around 25-30 years,” added Upasna Saxena, Consultant (Radiation Oncology) from HCG Cancer Centre in Mumbai. In mammography, each breast is examined separately and compressed against the film to obtain maximum visualization of masses or calcifications. “This helps identify masses or lumps that are smaller than the size that can be felt on examination. Hence, they help in early detection of breast cancers. But at the same time all masses seen on mammography are not cancerous,” Saxena informed, “Mammography is to be avoided in pregnant women as the foetus will be at risk even with minimal doses,” Saxena noted.

Jersey is very close to my heart. It’s a remake of a Telugu film with the same title. The story is very beautiful. It’s very interesting. We want it to reach maximum audience. Dreams do come true, I’ll say. I remember, after college, I went all alone to watch Farhan Akhtar’s Bhaag Milkha Bhaag. That time I thought to myself that one day I will work with these two (Farhan and Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra) or at least, meet them. I remember I even sent Rakeysh sir a message from my old Facebook account. I don’t know if he ever read that message. As an actor, I’m blessed that I’m getting the opportunity to play different characters. I can’t believe this is happening. 2019 was really lucky for me. I have been a huge fan of Madhuri Dixit since childhood. She is titled as Bollywood’s expression queen. I learned from her. I respect her. I adore her. And I really look up to her. All the sequences (in the song) where I’m expressing through eyes is what I’ve learnt from her. I’m so blessed to have received so many compliments for the song.

Talking about how Jacqueline is managing work during the lockdown, the actress stated, "Lucky for us we have zoom now so we can do our conferences and not have to physically be around and in offices to actually get our meetings done. During his virtual appearance on Jimmy Fallon’s show, the 55-year-old actor said he didn’t truly understand racial discrimination until he moved from Kansas City, Missouri, to the suburbs. “That was when a lot of bullying started when I was at school, and it definitely predicated on race. That’s when it started to be clear that the cops were not on ‘Team Don’ and there was a different treatment,” Cheadle said. He further said that there have been many moments when he has even had “guns put to my head”. “I got stopped more times than I can count and guns were put to my head. I always fit the description… I used to finish their sentences. They’d go, ‘We’re stopping you because…’ and I’d go, ‘Fit the description. I know’,” the actor added. Given his own experiences, Cheadle said the killing of Floyd didn’t come as a surprise to him. “This is not something that was new to me, once all these videos started coming out. Things that we knew very well were happening. They just weren’t being filmed,” he added.

ARM Macs will be MacBook Pros and an all-new iMac

A

pple is set to unveil its long-awaited Mac transition from Intel to ARM processors today at its online WWDC 2020 keynote, and analyst Mingchi Kuo has issued his predictions for the first Macs that will use the new Apple-designed processors. His research note was reported on by MacRumors, 9to5Mac, and AppleInsider. First of all, Kuo says the last new Intel-based Mac ever will be a brand new iMac design with thinner bezels and a 24-inch display. This iMac

is said to be planned for a release in Q3 2020, but an ARM version will follow it in the first quarter of next year. The first ARM Mac is likely to be a 13-inch MacBook Pro in Q4 2020 or Q1 2021, Kuo says; the form factor is believed to be similar to the current model. Production of the Intel version will reportedly cease once the ARM model is introduced, though there’s no word on whether the same will be true for the iMac. Kuo also believes a new ARM-based MacBook design will start production in mid-2021.

Google Meet now has a ‘meet.new’ shortcut for quickly starting new video conferences

G

oogle is expanding its .new browser shortcuts to Google Meet, its video conferencing service that the company has heavily expanded in recent months due to a huge influx of users looking to stay connected in COVID-19 quarantines, via 9to5Google. Like the company’s docs.new, sheets.new, or slide.new shortcuts, typing “meet.new” into your browser will automatically open a new Google Meet session. It’s a small addition,

but a useful one for anyone who uses the tool a lot.Additionally, like with the Google Docs shortcuts, users can append numbers to designate between multiple accounts, so you could create a menubar bookmark of “meet.new/1” for your personal account, and “meet.new/2” for work. Google first launches its .new shortcuts back in 2018 for its G Suite tools; last year, the company announced that it would be expanding the system to third-party companies, including Spotify

way to hold our leaders accountable and how we address many of the issues our country is grappling with.” These contentious issues include Facebook’s own policies on political speech. It allows politicians to lie in paid adverts to users and has turned a blind eye to threatening posts from President Trump, a policy that has attracted widespread criticism, including from the company’s own employees and presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden. In an open letter written to Zuckerberg published last week, Biden said the company’s decision to allow misinformation from politicians “[poses] a threat to free and fair elections.”

Amazon is ending support for its Dash Wa n d , a n A l e x a enabled device that let shoppers scan grocery barcodes and order household essentials from their homes. In an email to users, the company said the devices will no longer be supported as of July 21st. Shoppers can still use other Alexaenabled devices to add items to a shopping list, the company noted. Released in 2017, the Wi-Fi-enabled Dash Wand was a few inches long and made out of white and black plastic, an update to Amazon’s original Dash devices. In a 2017 product review, Verge editor Nilay Patel said the Dash Wand was “a fun toy and it certainly makes adding things to your Amazon cart easier.” After giving them away to Prime members practically for free, however, Amazon didn’t do much else with the Wand. The company killed its physical Dash buttons last year. To dispose of a Dash Wand, check out Amazon’s recycling program. Vogue’s first black cover model opens up on racism in the fashion industry

J The first black Vogue cover model Beverly Johnson recently spoke about racism and discrimination in the fashion industry.

Beverly Johnson

ohnson went on to talk about how discrimination on the basis of race limited her to a “significantly lower compensation than white peers.” She revealed having been “reprimanded for requesting black photographers, makeup artists and hairstylists for photo shoots.” he 67-year-old also referenced Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, who recently sent out an e-mail to her employees, apologising for not doing enough to elevate black editors, writers, photographers, designers and other creators. “I know that it is not enough to say we will do better, but we will — and please know that I value your voices and responses as we move forward,” Wintour had written. Johnson mentioned that Vogue’s previous efforts to be more inclusive have been one-off instances that could not lead to any real change in the industry or at the magazine. She cited one such incident where singer Beyonce advocated for a black photographer Tyler Mitchell to shoot her September 2018 Vogue cover. This made him the “first black photographers to shoot a Vogue in its 125-year history”, Johnson wrote. She added, “But Mitchell’s cover was a oneoff, not a spark. Since then, there have been no black photographers who have shot a Vogue cover.”

Without sustainability, fashion will become irrelevant:

don’t believe we have the luxury of a future where sustainability isn’t at the heart of every action. Fashion as an industry must make sustainability the default – it will become completely irrelevant otherwise. At House Of Anita Dongre, every decision from manufacturing to the choice of lighting in the office factors in our progress towards carbon neutrality. Our processes have always put the planet first but having this time allowed for greater focus on issues that deserve immediate attention globally: – Shift focus to a ‘Circular Fashion Loop’ to get closer to a zero-carbon and water footprint as a brand. – Evaluating vendors and partnerships by their carbon-

neutrality. We need everybody to effect change. – Post-pandemic, restoring an employment balance, and supporting the economy will remain key. To us, this means doubling down on our existing efforts of financially empowering rural women, the support of traditional Indian art, and spearheading animal welfare. The entire industry is going to follow stringent safety norms, it’s going to be a new way of working. At House Of Anita Dongre, we’re re-configuring our operating procedures to bring as few people into the workplace as possible. Easier said than done as a manufacturing and retail business. I strongly believe that it is young designers and consumers who will bring change. In the last three months, the world has seen the reality of how much better life would be if we lived sustainably — the evidence is around us in the clean air,

USCIS Issued Statement on Supreme Court’s DACA Decision

USCIS NEWS RELEASE WASHINGTON, DC — U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Deputy Director for Policy Joseph Edlow issued the following statement on today’s Supreme Court decision on the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program: Today’s court opinion has no basis in law and merely delays the President’s lawful ability to end the illegal Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals amnesty program. “DACA was created through an Executive Branch memorandum after President Obama said repeatedly that it was illegal for him to do so unilaterally and

despite the fact that Congress affirmatively rejected the proposal on multiple occasions. The constitutionality of this de facto

amnesty program created by the Obama administration has been widely questioned since its inception. The fact remains that under DACA, hundreds of thousands of illegal aliens continue to remain in our country in violation of the laws passed by Congress and to take jobs Americans need now more than ever. Ultimately, DACA is not a long-term solution for anyone, and if Congress wants to provide a permanent solution for these illegal aliens it needs to step in to reform our immigration laws and prove that the cornerstone of our democracy is that presidents cannot legislate with a ‘pen and a phone.

Religious Leaders Urge Las Vegas Casino to Remove Statues of Hindu and Jain Deities and Apologize BY A STAFF WRITER LAS VEGAS, NV- In a remarkable interfaith gesture; Christian-Hindu-Buddhist-JewishJain religious leaders have urged the Las Vegas casino Mandalay Bay to remove statues of various Hindu and Jain deities from its Foundation Room night club, calling it highly inappropriate. Nevada’s Greek Orthodox Christian Priest Stephen R. Karcher, Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, prominent Buddhist Priest Matthew T. Fisher, well-known Jewish Rabbi ElizaBeth Webb Beyer, and renowned Jain leader Sulekh C. Jain; in a joint statement in Nevada today; said that placing highly revered Hindu and Jain deities to adorn a casino night-club was very disrespectful, out-of-line, and could be disturbing to the adherents of these faiths. Karcher-Zed-Fisher-Beyer-Jain urged William Hornbuckle and Paul Salem, Acting CEO and Board Chairman respectively of MGM Resorts International, parent company of Mandalay Bay Casino, to offer a formal apology to Hindu and Jain communities for this insensitivity. Rajan Zed, who is President of Universal Society of Hinduism, pointed out that Hindu deities Lord Ganesha, Lord Shiva, goddess Saraswati, etc.; were meant to be worshiped in temples or home shrines and not to be thrown around loosely in a casino night club for dramatic effects or mercantile/ other agenda. Such denigration of sacred deities was hurtful to the devotees. Sulekh C. Jain stressed that pratima (statue) of Lord Mahavira belonged in a temple for veneration and not to be misused or mishandled by the patrons of a night club. He suggested that the Mandalay Bay Casino could donate it to a Jain temple and the Jain community would gladly pay for its transportation. Karcher-Zed-Fisher-Beyer-Jain further said that they, the faith leaders, were for free

Chicago to Move to Phase Four of “Protecting Chicago” Reopening Framework: Announced by Mayor LIghtfoot MAYOR’S NEWS RELEASE CHICAGO, IL – Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot and the Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) today announced that Chicago is on track to transition to phase four of the “Protecting Chicago” framework on Friday, June 26, alongside the rest of Illinois. The guidelines are aligned with the State-issued guidelines, with additional specificity included for Chicago’s context, which has experienced a different arc of COVID-19 than other parts of the state. Phase four – ‘Gradually Resume’ – will allow additional businesses and public amenities to open with limited capacities and appropriate safeguards. Although progress has been made in order to move to phase four, all residents should continue to abide by important guidance including: physically distancing and wearing a face covering; limiting non-business, social gatherings to 50 persons for indoor events and 100 for outdoors; staying at home if you are considered vulnerable, feel ill or have come into contact with someone with COVID-19; and getting tested if you have symptoms. “The service and sacrifice made by Chicagoans from every corner of our city and every walk of life has allowed us to safely reach the point where we are now,” said Mayor Lightfoot. “It includes the incredible work done by our healthcare professionals, first responders, and essential workers who have cared for our residents and kept our city running. Everything we’ve done to meet this moment has been the direct result of the hard work and sacrifice of our residents, which has not only saved the lives of thousands of Chicagoans over these past three months, but also helped lay the groundwork for the transformative recovery that will follow.” The following industries will open for the first time at the beginning of phase four in Chicago: Indoor seating in bars and restaurants, Museums and zoos, Performance venues, Summer camps / youth activities Phase four will also include adjustments to other industries that have previously reopened, and detailed information can be found at chicago.gov/reopening. To allow businesses and

organizations to prepare for the next phase, Mayor Lightfoot, in partnership with CDPH, industry leaders, labor leaders, and public officials from around Chicago, released an additional set of industry-specific guidelines for businesses, employees, and customers to follow as the city moves into phase four. Industry-specific guidelines include details such as how businesses can encourage healthy interactions between workers and customers, how to maintain safe working spaces and conditions, and how to design and monitor workplace operations to create flexibility and maintain safety for employees and customers. To inform businesses of the new guidelines for phase four, the Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection (BACP) will hold a series of educational webinars this week. Webinars will be held for newly reopening industries such as arts/performance venues and museums and industries that will be following new guidelines in phase four, such as health and fitness centers and personal services. To register and learn more, visit chicago.gov/ businessworkshops. The COVID-19 data in Chicago continues to trend positively and the city is on pace to meet the metrics to move into phase four: Continued decline in the number of newly diagnosed COVID-19 cases, across all raceethnicity groups. These numbers have continued to steadily decline since peaking in early May,

even as testing has increased, a sign that the outbreak has remained in good control locally as industries have begun cautiously reopening. Continued decline in the number of COVID-19 hospitalizations, deaths, and emergency department visits. Continued decline in percent positivity (the percentage of people tested who are positive), which is now down to approximately 5%. The goal to move into phase four had been less than 7%. This is also declining across all race-ethnicity groups. Adequate hospital and ICU capacity, which are currently more than adequate and continue to improve as COVID-19 hospitalizations decline. Adequate testing capacity, and specifically conducting at least 4,500 tests per day, which represents the ability to test 5% of Chicago’s population each month. The city is back above this mark after testing disruptions due to street protests and inclement weather. Adequate response capacity, with at least 90% of new COVID-19 cases being assigned for investigation within 24 hours. This metric has been achieved To move into phase four, Chicago had set a requirement of stable or declining cases along with a goal of reaching fewer than 200 new COVID-19 cases per day, which it has now achieved, with a current 7-day average of 167 new cases per day. Based on the city’s population and national metrics from the CDC, this will move Chicago from a highincidence to a moderate-high incidence level. “The data continue to show that we’re making progress and we’ll be ready to move into phase four later this week,” said CDPH Commissioner Allison Arwady, M.D. “However, we still have a lot of COVID-19 cases here in Chicago; we’re just now moving from a high-risk to a medium-high-risk city for COVID-19 spread, based on our numbers, and we need to move ahead cautiously. I can’t emphasize enough the need for people and businesses to continue to abide by the public health guidance so we can avoid the spike in cases we’re seeing in other cities and states that

Three Indian-Origin Family Members Found Dead in Backyard Pool in NJ BY A STAFF WRITER EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ- Three Indianorigin family members, including an 8-year-old girl, have been found dead in the backyard pool of their recently purchased home in New Jersey, police said. 62-year-old Bharat Patel, his 33-year old daughter-in-law Nisha Patel and her 8-year-old daughter Sacchi were found unresponsive in the above-ground pool June 22 afternoon by East Brunswick police responding to a 911 call from neighbors who heard screams. Police Lt. Frank Sutter told reporters police performed CPR when they arrived, but all three victims were pronounced dead at the scene. The tragic ordeal began when the child — identified by neighbors as Sacchi Patel — jumped into a 6- or 7-foot-deep section of the above-ground pool at the family’s recently purchased house in East Brunswick on Monday afternoon, as per report. An aunt who was watching the girl called for help, and the child’s 62-year-old

re-opened before us.” If and when Chicago continues to make progress against COVID-19, capacity restrictions will be loosened further within phase four. For example, right now, while Chicago is still at a moderate-high level of new cases, there is approximately a 15% chance that a gathering of 50 Chicagoans will include someone with active COVID-19 infection. This is concerning because many people may not have symptoms but can still spread COVID-19, which is why keeping a 6-foot distance and wearing a face covering is so important. Once Chicago has fewer than 100 new cases per day, the city will move to a moderate-incidence level by national standards, and gathering sizes and capacity limits can more safely increase. CDPH will continue to follow the same health metrics to help guide the City’s decisionmaking process, with easy color-coding: Green – Go: cautious progress, continued progress or advanced progress Yellow – Caution: pause and monitor Red – Stop: may need to reinstate certain restrictions Currently, the city is in green for all metrics. The City recently launched a data dashboard here where individuals can explore these metrics. The new data dashboard was prompted by the desire to make community-level data more accessible, particularly for African American and Latinx residents who have been most impacted by the outbreak. The Racial Equity Rapid Response Team, which was launched by the City to be responsive to these communities, wanted a clearer understanding of the change in the COVID-19 outbreak by race, ethnicity, and neighborhood. The dashboard can be accessed from the ‘Latest Data’ tab on the COVID-19 website. It was developed in partnership with community groups, the CDPH Office of Epidemiology and Slalom Consulting, with support from the Civic Consulting Alliance, and will be constantly updated so community organizations and residents are encouraged to continue to provide input.

New York Continue to have Positive NY Coronavirus Tests Below 1 Percent

Representative image BY A STAFF WRITER NEW YORK, NY New York City, Long Island and the Hudson Valley continue to have very low rates of infection, according to the latest state data. “The COVID-19 pandemic isn’t over, and as we reopen New York safely and incrementally, the state government will continue to provide timely information so that New Yorkers can make educated decisions for themselves and their families,” Cuomo said in a news release Sunday. “Yesterday, less than 1 percent of COVID-19 tests conducted in the state were positive, which means we continue to be on the right path toward defeating the virus.” He offered data about the continuing COVID-19 cases statewide: Hospitalizations: 1,142, The governor also confirmed 664 additional cases of the coronavirus, bringing the total to 387,936 cases in the state.

Mayor Lightfoot and BACP Announce New Program to Provide PPE For Chicago’s Taxicab Industry MAYOR’S NEWS RELEASE CHICAGO,IL – Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot and Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection (BACP) Commissioner Rosa Escareno today announced the launch of a new program that offers subsidies to all Chicago’s taxicab medallion owners so that they can purchase the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) they need to operate safely in Chicago. Under the program, the City is making available $200 per taxicab per year for reimbursements for face coverings, gloves, disinfecting products, partitions and other PPE products and service. Today’s launch builds on the City’s ongoing efforts to support safe and reliable public vehicle transportation throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. “Chicago’s paratransit residents rely on our taxicabs to stay connected to jobs, education and opportunity,” said Mayor Lightfoot. “Through this new program, we can further ensure Chicago’s public vehicle transportation industry has the resources and support they need to keep operators, employees and customers safe during this difficult time.” Distributed from the City’s Accessibility Fund, the subsidies provided to Chicago’s taxicab owners could total up to $800,000. Licensed Taxicab Medallion Holders and Taxi Affiliations are eligible to apply here for reimbursement today through a form which can be found on BACP’s website. To be eligible, taxicabs must be in good standing with the PACE Taxi Access Program (TAP), through which paratransit customers travel via taxicab at reduced rates for trips originating within the City of Chicago. Applicants can receive reimbursement of up to $200 per taxicab for PPE. Items eligible for reimbursement include but are not limited to:

Representative image Masks, Gloves, Hand Sanitizer, Cleaning Products and Services, Plastic or Vinyl Partitions Partition Installation Costs “Chicago’s taxicabs have long been an essential service, particularly for passengers with disabilities,” said Rosa Escareno, BACP Commissioner. “This latest effort removes a financial burden on taxicabs while ensuring that drivers have the protection they need to keep themselves and their passengers safe.” For many paratransit passengers, the PACE Taxi Access Program (TAP) is essential as their primary means of mobility. All City of Chicago licensed taxicabs are available to accept and transport certified paratransit passengers through TAP and all are required to install and maintain technology to accommodate payments and service through this program. To provide relief for residents during the COVID-19 outbreak, PACE has temporarily eliminated paratransit passenger fees for the Taxi Access Program. “Chicago’s taxi industry is a critical

component in the City’s efforts to provide more accessible transportation options for people with disabilities,” said Laurie Dittman, Acting Commissioner of the Mayor’s Office of People with Disabilities. “Even throughout this unprecedented time, Chicago is making every effort to not only ensure our residents with disabilities have access to transportation but also that the Wheelchair-Accessible Vehicle (WAV) medallion holders have the PPE they need to stay safe.” Earlier this week, BACP announced that the department has entered into a contract for Curb Mobility, LLC (CURB) to manage the City’s Centralized Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV) Taxicab Dispatch Service. Beginning July 1, 2020, passengers can request a WAV taxicab ride by calling 1-888-WAV-CABS (1-888-928-2227) or by downloading the CURB app. Passengers will also be able to make in-app electronic payments for their rides via the CURB app. For more information, including steps on how to download the CURB app, visit gocurb.com/ChicagoWAV. “As a Chicago taxicab owner and operator, I am thrilled to be able to take advantage of the $200 reimbursement program that BACP is offering,” said George Kasp, taxicab medallion owner-operator. “Personal Protective Equipment is essential to my ability to continue doing my job safely and responsibly.” As part of the City’s relief efforts for the taxicab and rideshare industry, the payments for Ground Transportation Tax and other business taxes have been deferred through the crisis, with the resumption of collection activities phased in over the next few months. Public Vehicle licenses that have expired or will expire between March 15 and June 30 will have until July 30 to

renew. BACP has also created a direct subsidy for WAV taxicabs by increasing the annual subsidy for vehicle maintenance by $1,000, increasing the WAV driver leasing subsidy from $15 to $25/hour. “We are glad to see the City of Chicago Department of BACP stepping up to protect & assist the taxicab industry and their customers by providing PPE funds,” said Jong B. Lee, President of Sun Taxi Association. “Chicago is taking positive steps toward recovery and the PPE funds will go a long way in stopping the spread and protecting passengers in the vehicles. Everyone needs to do their part, so that we can continue to move forward and get back to being safe.” To assist taxicabs and all business owners secure affordable PPE supplies from verified sources, the City has partnered with local startup Rheaply to launch “Chicago PPE Market”, a program that will facilitate access to PPE for Chicago’s small businesses and nonprofits. Chicago-based organizations will be able to connect with a network of local manufacturers and suppliers to access protective shields, reusable face masks, hand sanitizer and other products at cost-controlled rates via chicagoppemarket.com. Buyers can register for the Chicago PPE Market here and then check their email for a link to access the online platform. To use the Chicago PPE Market, buyers browse available listings for reusable face coverings, hand sanitizer, and protective shields; request to purchase specific PPE based on their desired quantity and the advertised price; and communicate directly with the supplier through the in-platform messaging feature to agree on payment and pick-up or delivery details.

BY A STAFF WRITER WILLIAMSVILLE, NY- When Indian American anesthesiologist Amarjit Virk was fired by Williamsville, N.Y.-based MapleGate Anesthesiologists in May 2013, he sued, claiming that the company breached his employment contract and violated his civil rights when it terminated his employment, according to a June 8 court document obtained by Bloomberg Law. Maple-Gate denied these allegations and asserted a number of defenses, including that they had cause to terminate Virk’s employment when his hospital privileges were precautionarily suspended after a patient’s death. The arbitrator engaged by the parties to resolve their dispute ruled largely in Virk’s favor and awarded him $2,686,864.57 in total damages. The arbitrator determined that Virk, a board-certified anesthesiologist and employee and shareholder of Maple-Gate Anesthesiologists, P.C., failed to prove that Maple-Gate discriminated against him due to his race, age, disability, or national origin, but concluded that there was a “general animosity toward Dr. Virk and a desire to oust him from the Maple-Gate practice.” As to Virk’s breach-of-contract claims, the

arbitrator found that he “sufficiently proved” that Maple-Gate terminated his employment in breach of his employment contract and hence the nearly $2.7 million in damages. Maple-Gate challenged the arbitrator’s findings, saying he “exceeded his powers and manifestly disregarded the governing law.” But U.S. District Court Judge William M. Skretny did not think so and ruled that the final award must be confirmed. “He spoke up and his partners resented that,” Gerald T. Walsh, Virk’s attorney, told The Buffalo News. “Instead of supporting him, they saw it as an opportunity to get rid of him.” Walsh told the publication that Virk was doing really well when he joined Maple-Gate in 2000 with the hope of becoming a partner in the practice. The problems began years later when Virk, who was born and raised in India, started complaining about unlawful discrimination and speaking up for other Asian doctors at the practice, Walsh told the Buffalo News. “I think that came back to haunt him,” he said. “He had a great career. He never had a problem. And then something happened with the partners.
