n the 44th anniversary of the Emergency, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday paid tributes to “all those greats who fiercely and fearlessly resisted” it, adding that the country’s “democratic ethos successfully prevailed over an authoritarian mindset”.

The Emergency refers to the period from June 25, 1975 to March 21, 1977, when then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had declared a state of Emergency, a political environment leading to the suspension of election and curbing civil liberties, on the nation.

n a significant ruling, the Bombay High Court on Thursday upheld the validity of reservations in education and government jobs granted to the Maratha community under the Socially and Educationally Backward Class category, but reduced the quantum from 16 per cent.

The verdict was greeted with outburst of celebrations among Marathas all over the state, giving a fillip to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party-Shiv Sena combine, barely four months before the assembly elections.

Arshad Khan was injured during the Fidayeen attack on the K.P. Road in Anantnag town on June 12.

He was shifted to AIIMS Delhi where he succumbed to his injuries on June 16.

INDO-US TRADE IRRITANTS: NEGOTIATION NOT RETALIATION

Both countries can identify products on which there can be mutual market access without any major negative fallout on their economic interests

ince the US announcement of its withdrawal of benefits to India under the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) on March 4, 2019, there is speculation that Indo-US trade relations may plunge into a downward spiral. Mark Linscott, Former Assistant US Trade Representative for South and Central Asian Affairs and Senior Fellow, Atlantic Council cautioned that “this action could be a first step in a series that might follow, with a cumulative effect of creating significant new tension in the bilateral trade relationship”.

Tulsi Gabbard, Democratic presidential aspirant, among several other influential US lawmakers, had urged the Donald Trump administration not to allow any sort of political misrepresentation of the US announcement of GSP withdrawal until general elections in the country were over. Such an understanding would provide more flexibility to respective governments on both sides to resume talks effectively before the US decision is enforced.

Second, both countries can identify products on which there can be mutual market access without any major negative fallout on their economic interests. The US should look at products which it is importing from China but can be easily imported from India, through necessary adjustments in technical regulations.

Similarly, India should look at products which are otherwise being imported from China and can be imported from the US. This would help both to reduce their respective trade deficits with China and could significantly boost the growth of their bilateral trade.

rime Minister Narendra Modi has done well to push India’s campaign against Pak-instigated terror in Kashmir and elsewhere to a new level internationally by bilaterally telling President Xi Jinping of China at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit at Bishkek in Kyrgyzstan that India could not engage Pakistan in talks unless that country took ‘concrete action’ against terrorism.

China is a founder of SCO and President Xi has on more than one occasion described Pakistan as its ‘all weather friend’ — China reportedly did not want Indian Prime Minister to raise the issue of terror at the summit.

In a swift move, however, India’s Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale addressed a news conference announcing to the world how Modi had taken up the issue of Pak-sponsored terror with the Chinese President and conveyed to the latter India’s firm stand.

At his subsequent address at the summit, where Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan was also present, Modi called for concerted action to hold accountable countries that were sponsoring, aiding and funding terrorism.

Without naming Pakistan he was able to shame that country for resorting to state-sponsored terrorism. He urged those who were putting up with the menace because of some political consideration to ‘come out of their nar-

Tamil Nadu to get third desalination plant IANS, CHENNAI

amil Nadu Chief Minister K. Palaniswami on Thursday laid the foundation stone for the 150 MLD-desalination plant near here.The project involves an outlay of Rs 1,259.38 crore, the government said.

Currently, there are two desalination plants each with a capacity of 100 million litre per day (MLD) catering to the 10 lakh residents of North Chennai and nine lakh residents of South Chennai.

According to the government, the new plant that would come up near the existing one on 10.50 acre at Nemeli on East Coast Road expected to go on stream in 2021 and would cater to nine lakh residents.

While Cholavaram (full capacity 1,081 mcft), Redhills (full capacity 3,300 mcft) and Chembarambakkam (3,645 mcft) lakes that supply water to Chennai have run dry.

There is only 18 mcft water left in Poondi reservoir (against a full capacity of 3,231 mcft), according to the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board.

illions of people joined Prime Minister Narendra Modi and performed Yoga as the country observed 5th International Day of Yoga on June 21.

Modi performed yoga along with around 30,000 people in Ranchi for around 45 minutes at the Prabhat Tara ground.

Addressing the participants, Modi said, “Yoga has always been associated with peace and harmony. I thank people for adopting Yoga. I urge people to embrace it.”

He also spoke in English for a few minutes to reach out to the global audience.

Stating that “Yoga is beyond caste, religion, region and any boundaries”, the Prime Minister suggested, “there is a solution to alcoholism and diabetes in Yoga”.

While the Prime Minister was participating in Ranchi, the President participated in an indoor event in Parliament along with others.

President Ram Nath Kovind, who took part in an indoor event in Parliament, said in a tweet: “On #InternationalDayofYoga best wishes to all practitioners of yoga across the world. Yoga is India’s gift to humanity; it holds the key to healthy living and to that fine balance between mind and body. Do become a part of the celebration of yoga.”

He said besides the energy security, India’s concerns relate to its large diaspora present in the Gulf region, regional stability and trade.

He said India and the US have a “common ground” in the context of ensuring that global energy supply should remain predictable and affordable.

“India is the world’s 5th largest economy and 85 per cent of its energy requirements are imported, large part of it from the Gulf,” Jaishankar underscored.

eople who take cholesterol-lowering statins may be at twice the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, says a new study.

Statins are a class of drugs that can lower cholesterol and blood pressure, reducing the risk of heart attack and stroke.

More than a quarter of middleaged adults use a cholesterol-lowering drug, according to estimates.

The study, published in the Diabetes Metabolism Research and Reviews journal, found that statin users had more than double the risk of a diabetes diagnosis com-

pared to those who didn’t take the drugs. Those who took the cholesterol-lowering drugs for more than two years had more than three times the risk of diabetes.

“The fact that increased duration of statin use was associated with an increased risk of diabetes something we call a dose-dependent relationship - makes us think that this is likely a causal relationship,” said the study’s lead author Victoria Zigmont, a graduate student at the Ohio State University.

“Statins are very effective in preventing heart attacks and strokes. I would never recommend that people stop taking the statin they’ve been prescribed based on this

study, but it should open up further discussions about diabetes prevention,” Zigmont added.

Researchers found that statin users were 6.5 per cent more likely to have a troublingly high HbA1c value - a routine blood test for diabetes that estimates average blood sugar over several months.

“Although statins have clear benefits in appropriate patients, scientists and clinicians should further explore the impact of statins on human metabolism, in particular the interaction between lipid and carbohydrate metabolism,” said co-author Steven Clinton.

The study included 4,000 nondiabetes.

Meet and Greet Dinner Gala Banquet for International Gujarati Film Festival

BY A STAFF WRITER EDISON, NJ- More than 150 invited guests from the Indian community in tristate area attended meet and greet dinner gala banquet which was held on Friday, June 14, 2019, at 7 p.m. at TV Asia Auditorium in Edison, New Jersey. After a grand success of first edition at New Jersey in August 2018 with more than 4,500 attendees, the second edition of The International Gujarati Film Festival was held in two cities in the USA from June 7-9, 2019, at Los Angeles, California and from June 15-16, 2019, in Edison, New Jersey.

Two superstars of Gujarati films and young, talented actor Malhaar Thakar and actress Monal Gajjar along with few prominent movie directors and producers were among the dignitaries attended the meet and greet evening. International Gujarati Film Festival (IGFF) which aims to promote the Gujarati Cinema and Culture on world across by organizing the film festival in the U.S. since last year. IGFF serves the community of Gujarati cinema by putting forth the immense talent and help attribute splendour to the populace which has long been underappreciated. Through a series of awards, the festival also provides filmmakers with the opportunity to indulge with a professional network and help grow their knowledge of the international cinematic trends.

The program started with welcome and history and objectives of IGFF described

by Dr. Tushar Patel of Ohmkara & OHM Charities, a leading non-profit organization under the leadership of business entrepreneur and community leader Mr. Pinakin Pathak to promote Gujarati language, art and music in the USA and across the world and one of the sponsors of meet and greet. Shah provided excellent history of cinema and gave the eye opening statistics about films across the world and mentioned the importance of why a support and funding

The feature films reflected some wonderful films which is a testament of high-class productions and superb work from the talented actors and directors of Gujarati films. Kunal Wadhwani, Northeast region in-charge of Shemaroo provided information on how Gujarati films have impacted U.S. market and how far have Gujarati films came in a mainstream in the last decade. Chetan Chauhan, marketing in-charge of IGFF introduced all celebrities who came from India to include two young actors Malhaar and Monal and coordinated a wonderful question and answer session on Gujarati films which was very well organized and well received by the audience. Some of the other prominent individuals from local organizations, media and businesses who attended the event included Madhy Rye, Piyush Patel, Kanubhai Chauhan, Rathin Mehta, Ashish Desai, Kaushik Vyas, Sudhir Vaishnav, Kaushik Amin, Vijay Thakker,

IGFF has one goal, to show that a Gujarati Cinema has the potential of creating scripts and movies which can stand shoulder to shoulder with any other movie industry. 20th Anniversary Celebrated by Hindu Temple of Lake County

BY A STAFF WRITER GRAYSLAKE, IL- The Hindu Temple of Lake County, Grayslake, IL held a two-day grand celebration with much pomp and show on Saturday, Jun 22 to Sunday, Jun 23, 2019 to mark the twelfth anniversary of the installation of the idols in the temple, and Dhwajarohan with hundreds of devotees.

In Hinduism, the 12th year signifies completion of Maha Kumbha cycle. The Punar Sthapana Puja and Homam were performed with utmost devotion and chanting of all the Vedic Hymns, Mantras, and rituals to revitalize and seek energies and spiritual vibrations for all the Pran Pratishtha deities and the temple complex to purify our material and spiritual well-being as we seek to receive blessings of the Gods.

On 22nd morning, at 9:30am, the anniversary program started with Lord Ganesh Puja, Samohika Sankalpam, Kalash Sthapana, and Raksha Sutra followed by the Dhwaja Pujan, Shobha Yatra (Parikrama) of Kalash and Dhwaja around the temple.

The Dhwajarohan (Flag hoisting) and Sthapana of Kalash at the Yagna Place were performed with much commitment and enthusiasm. Three Homams that represented Vishnu, Shiva, and Shakti Swaroopams were led by Pt. Ganesh Ji, Shri Yogesh Pandey, and Pt. Anil Joshi Ji. Later in the afternoon, a Samohika Satyanarayana Puja was performed for the welfare and prosperity of the temple, community, all the devotees and every living creature in the Universe. Two passengers from the Mercedes were transported to a hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening. The driver of the Mercedes fled on foot and has not yet been arrested, reports have said.

Friends of Ali set up a GoFundMe page to help with the costs of transporting Ali and his belongings to India, as well as funeral expenses.

At time of press, the $60,000 goal set had been surpassed.

Lyft also issued a statement on the passing of Ali.

An Indian American Lecturer at UChicago Honored by William Pollak Award for Excellence on Teaching

BY A STAFF WRITER CHICAGO, IL- An Indian American lecturer at the University of Chicago, Shipra Pa r i k h , i s t h e recipient of the ‘2019 William Pollak Award for Excellence in Teaching.’

Shipra Parikh Parikh, a full-time lecturer at the university’s School of Social Service Administration, was honored at the school’s Hooding ceremony June 14.

The award at the School of Social Service Administration is given to a member of the SSA faculty for exemplary graduate teaching. Given annually from 1995 until 2003, the award is now presented every other year.

Parikh, who provides bilingual (Spanish/ English) psychotherapeutic outpatient services focusing on developmentally, culturally appropriate, and systemic abuse-focused treatment of youth and their families, also serves as the clinical supervisor of the school-based mental health services at Enlace, a communitybased, grassroots organization in the Little Village community of Chicago, according to her profile on the university’s website.

She has experience doing clinical social work in community-based agencies and hospice centers abroad. As a clinical consultant and trainer, she is serving a variety of arts and social service organizations to pursue a more anti-oppressive client-based and responsive staff agenda, it said.

Prof. Pollak was a faculty member at SSA for 26 years, from 1976 to 2002, and also served as associate dean and deputy dean for the faculty.

BY A STAFF WRITER NILES, IL- Niles Township High School District 219 Community Relations Executive Assistant Rosamin Bhanpuri was honored as the Lincolnwood Human Relations Commission Person of the Year at the Village of Lincolnwood Board of Trustees Meeting June 18. The Human Relations Commission honored Bhanpuri both for the work she has done in the Lincolnwood community as a representative of D219 as well as for her contributions to a number of volunteer efforts.

In presenting the award to Bhanpuri, Human Relations Commissioner Jennifer Costantino said, “Rosamin has a true love for Lincolnwood and the larger Niles Township community, as well as for the people who live here. She encourages people to get to know each other and to learn each other’s stories.

She believes that everyone has something valuable to contribute to the community, and helps individuals identify and act on ways they

can make Lincolnwood and Niles Township better places to live.”

Among her other contributions, Bhanpuri was recognized for coordinating the programs and activities for Coming Together since its inception in 2010. This township-wide program builds bridges of knowledge and understanding between people of different groups and ages. Each year Coming Together highlights a different topic, with an emphasis on literacy, cross-cultural awareness and community-building. Bhanpuri also serves on the Lincolnwood Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and is an active member of Lincolnwood’s Multicultural Task Force.

Village President Barry Bass said he appreciates Bhanpuri’s “innate quality to greet people with a smile, and your positive energy, which makes people feel comfortable and makes them feel recognized and important.

BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO,IL - The University of Chicago in Illinois June 3 announced that four graduate students, including Indian American Varun Ahluwalia, have been named the 2019 winners of the Wayne C. Booth Prize for Excellence in Teaching.

The prize, also given to Gregory Rassolov, Brooke Weigel and Alexander Wolfson, is awarded annually to graduate students for outstanding instruction of undergraduates.

Before coming to UChicago for the Harris School’s Master of Public Policy program, Ahluwalia was a public servant back in India.

He worked in diverse roles in the federal government, from an early position with the central police force to his most recent job as the deputy accountant general for the northern province of Punjab, the university said.

Though he has a background in mechanical engineering, Ahluwalia has focused his studies at UChicago around economics, teaching the economics core sequence to undergrads and a microeconomics course to business students at Chicago Booth, it said.

“I hope to eventually earn a Ph.D. in public policy and economics, building a foundation of theory that can inform public policies in India,” the prize recipient noted.

BY A STAFF WRITER SAN JOSE, CA-The family of Kiran Pabla, the 24-year-old Indian American student who was killed in 2015 in a hit-and-run accident by two drivers who were racing against each other on Yerba Buena Road, will now receive a settlement from the city of San Jose, Calif.

The Bay Area News Group reports that Pabla’s family is set to receive a “$750,000 settlement from the city of San Jose, along with a pledge that it will evaluate and improve guardrail safety on the speedy thoroughfare.”

Pabla was out jogging around noon Jan. 26, 2015 on Yerba Buena Road toward Silver Creek Road in San Jose, five blocks away from her home, when she was killed after two cars, driven by 19-year-old Gabriel Becerra Esparza and Manuel Maldonado Avalos, crashed while racing, pinning Pabla to a tree. Pabla died at the scene After the two cars collided, Esparza’s Nissan Altima hit a group of parked AT&T trucks before pinning Pabla against a tree, according to the Bay Area News Group report, which added that Pabla’s family sued the two drivers, the city, and AT&T. As per report Both drivers and AT&T paid out undisclosed amounts to the family.
