ahul Gandhi announced on July 3 that he has resigned as the Congress President and that he was to blame for the party’s rout in the Lok Sabha elections where it could win only 52 of the 542 seats. In an open letter made public on his Twitter account, Gandhi, son of UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, also said that the BJP’s sweeping election win proved that the RSS’ aim of capturing the country’s institutional structure was now complete. “As President of the Congress party, I am responsible for the loss of the 2019 election. Accountability is critical for the future growth of our party,” he said in a letter that was put on his Twitter account

MUMBAI: A Mumbai Magistrate on July 4 granted bail to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on a personal bond of Rs 15,000 in connection with a defamation case filed by an RSS worker, a party leader said. The surety amount was provided by former Mumbai MP Eknath Gaikwad who accompanied him to the hearing. Earlier, during the course of the short hearing, Gandhi pleaded ‘not guilty’ to the charges levelled against him by a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) worker who accused Gandhi of linking the RSS with the murder of Bengaluru-based journalist Gauri Lankesh in 2017. —IANS

which no longer described him as the Congress President. “It is for this reason that I have resigned as Congress President.” The letter said: “Rebuilding the party requires hard decisions and numerous people will have to be made accountable for the failure of 2019. “It would be unjust to hold others accountable but ignore my own responsibility as President of the party.” Gandhi said that while it was important for someone new to lead the Congress, “it would not be correct for me to select that person”. Earlier in the day, Gandhi told reporters: “I have already submitted my resignation and I am no longer the party chief. “The Congress Working Committee should convene a meeting at the earliest and decide on a new party chief.”

Gandhi announced on May 25, two days after the Lok Sabha election results became known, that he would resign as the Congress chief after the party was drubbed. Gandhi was himself defeated in Amethi in Uttar Pradesh but won from Wayanad in Kerala. In his four-page letter, Gandhi said the RSS, the BJP’s ideological parent, had succeeded in capturing the country’s institutional structure. He sought to question the role of the Election Commission in the 2019 Lok Sabha battle. “A free and fair election requires the neutrality of a country’s institutions — an election cannot be fair without arbiters, a free press, an independent judiciary and a transparent Election Commission that is objective and neutral,” he said.

Gandhi was in Mumbai to attend a defamation case filed against him by a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) activist Dhrutiman Joshi. At the hearing, the Congress MP from Wayanad pleaded “not guilty” to the charges and was granted bail.

Border-wall spending blocked

A court blocks US President’s plan to shift $2.5 billion from the military budget to erect a border wall IANS, WASHINGTON

Last week, the federal district court in Oakland, California, which heard the suit, made permanent its injunction blocking the reallocation

A

federal appeals court in San Francisco blocked US President Donald Trump’s plan to shift $2.5 billion from the military budget to erect a border wall, saying that attempt to divert money appeared to be a violation of federal law and the Constitution’s delegation to Congress of the power to appropriate funds. Rejecting administration arguments that the public interest necessitated such spending, the US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit said that those aims are “best served by respecting the Constitution’s assignment of the power of the purse to Congress, and by deferring to Congress’ understanding of the public interest as reflected in its repeated denial of more funding for border barrier construction”. immediately respond to a request for comment. The administration sought to move the funds from the Defense Department to the Department of Homeland Security to build the barrier in portions of Arizona, Cal-

ifornia and New Mexico, Efe news reported. A provision of the 2019 military appropriations law allows the Defense Secretary to transfer funds “for higher priority items, based on unforeseen military requirements”,

as long as “the item for which funds are requested has (not) been denied by the Congress”. Two non-profits -- the Sierra Club and the Southern Border Communities Coalition -- filed suit against the reallocation in Feb-

ruary, alleging that the wall project would inflict environmental harms and reduce the quality of life along the border. Last week, the federal district court in Oakland, California, which heard the suit, made permanent its injunction blocking the reallocation. Wednesday’s ruling affirmed that decision. Judges Richard Clifton, a George W. Bush appointee, and Michelle Friedland, an Obama appointee, formed the majority. While Judge Randy Smith, also appointed by Bush, dissented.

‘No citizenship question in 2020 census’ Trump to nominate Waller, Shelton to Fed Board

HP Inc, Dell, Microsoft and Amazon are considering to move “substantial production capacity out of China”, says a report.

US tech giants plan to move production out of China NEW DELHI: In yet another fall-out of the ongoing US-China trade war, tech giants like HP Inc, Dell, Microsoft and Amazon are considering to move “substantial production capacity out of China”, threatening the country’s position as the world’s technology powerhouse. According to a report in Nikkei Asian Review on Thursday, HP and Dell who make notebooks in the Chinese cities of Chongqing and Kunshan are both looking to move up to 30 per cent of their laptop production out of the country. Microsoft may move some Xbox gaming console production while Amazon could shift production of its Kindles and Echo speakers. “Other PC makers like Lenovo Group, Acer and Asustek are also exploring production outside of China,” said the report. The new US tariffs would hike local taxes on laptops, smartphones and game consoles, adding significant costs for the companies that

would eventually be passed on to the consumers. “Multiple sources said the situation was still too uncertain, while rising costs in China were also prompting manufacturers to examine alternatives,” the report added. Apple is already mulling the option to move up to 30 per cent of its smartphone production from China. China currently is the world’s biggest producer of PCs as well as smartphones. Foxconn Technology and Inventec have already moved some production out of China to other countries like Taiwan and Mexico, said the Nikkei report. Amazon and Nintendo are reportedly exploring Vietnam as an alternative, while Microsoft is eyeing Thailand as well as Indonesia. Although US President Donald Trump says that talks with China to end the ongoing trade war have “already begun,” the road ahead is full of thorns. —IANS

T

he US Department of Justice has said that the Trump administration will not add the controversial citizenship question to the 2020 census, days after the Supreme Court blocked the question’s inclusion for the time being. “We can confirm that the decision has been made to print the 2020 Decennial Census questionnaire without a citizenship question, and that the printer has been instructed to begin the printing process,” Xinhua quoted the Department of Justice attorney Kate Bailey as saying in an email sent to groups challenging the question. Former Obama White House lawyer Daniel Jacobson shared a screenshot of the email on Twitter. Kelly Laco, spokesperson for the Department of Justice, confirmed that the question will not appear on the census. The Supreme Court ruled last Thursday that the Trump administration did not give an adequate reason for adding the question to the 2020 census and sent the issue back to the Department of Commerce, which oversees the Census

WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has said he intends to nominate Christopher Waller and Judy Shelton to the Federal Reserve Board. Trump made the announcement on Twitter. His decisions came as both former nominees, economist Stephen Moore and pizza-chain executive Herman Cain, withdrew themselves from consideration, Xinhua reported. “I am pleased to announce that it is my intention to nominate Christopher Waller, Ph. D., Executive VP and Director of Research, Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, Missouri, to be on the board of the Federal Reserve,” Trump tweeted, adding that prior to his current posi-

Bureau, for further explanation. “If judicial review is to be more than an empty ritual, it must demand something better than the explanation offered for the action taken in this case,” Chief Justice John Roberts wrote in the court’s 5-4 majority opinion. He joined with the court’s liberal wing in delivering the ruling. The Trump administration had planned to ask all recipients a citizenship question on the 2020 census for the first time since 1950, claiming the question is needed to

tion, Waller served as a professor and chair of economics at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana. “I am pleased to announce that it is my intention to nominate Judy Shelton, Ph. D., US Executive Dir, European Bank of Reconstruction & Development to be on the board of the Federal Reserve,” the US President said in a subsequent tweet. He said Shelton is a founding member of right-wing advocacy group Empower America and has served on the board of directors of Hilton Hotels. The seven-member Fed Board now has two vacancies. Whoever is nominated by the president needs to be confirmed by the Senate. —IANS

enforce the Voting Rights Act. Those who oppose the question’s addition argue that the move will lead to an inaccurate population count since it will cause immigrants and non-citizens to skip the question or the census altogether. The data obtained from the census, which is conducted once a decade under the Constitution, is used for the allocation of congressional seats and the distribution of billions of federal dollars to states and localities over the next ten years.

Pick new Congress chief: Rahul Gandhi said that while it was important for someone new to lead the Congress, it would not be correct for him to select that person

Few have courage like you do: Priyanka on Rahul’s resignation NEW DELHI: A day after Congress President Rahul Gandhi stepped down from the party post issuing his resignation on a public platform owning responsibility for the party’s national election debacle, his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra tweeted: “Few have the courage that you do”. Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday posted a long letter on Twitter conveying his decision and asserting that he

had resigned as “accountability is critical” for the future growth of the party. “Few have the courage that you do @rahulgandhi. Deepest respect for your decision,” tweeted Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi, and re-tweeted her brother’s post. Gandhi had first disclosed his decision to quit on May 25, just days after the national election verdict that delivered a straight rout for the party.

MUMBAI: A day after he quit as Congress President, Rahul Gandhi on July 4 vowed to continue fighting “10 times more” than what he did in the past years. Speaking to media persons briefly, unmindful of standing in the rain, he said: “I am with the poor and the farmers.” “My fight will continue. I will fight 10 time more than I did in the past five years,” Gandhi asserted, indicating an

aggressive stance in the future. On his resignation as Congress President, he said he had stated in his letter released yesterday whatever he wanted to say.

NEW DELHI: Amid a leadership crisis in the Congress, senior leader Motilal Vora on July 4 said he will check with General Secretary K.C. Venugopal for possible dates of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting. Asked who will lead the party as the interim chief following Rahul

Gandhi’s resignation as Congress President, Vora said: “I will check whether the seniority will de decided on the basis of age or tenure.” Vora’s remarks came a day after Rahul Gandhi formally announced his resignation as the party chief, owning responsibility for the Congress rout in the Lok Sabha elections. —IANS

R

ahul Gandhi announced on July 3 that he has resigned as the Congress President and that he was to blame for the party’s rout in the Lok Sabha elections where it could win only 52 of the 542 seats.

Rahul gets bail in RSS defamation case MUMBAI: A Mumbai Magistrate on July 4 granted bail to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on a personal bond of Rs 15,000 in connection with a defamation case filed by an RSS worker, a party leader said.

Is Pakistan sincere in its crackdown against Saeed? IANS, NEW DELHI/ ISLAMABAD

E

ven as Pakistani authorities have booked Mumbai terror attack mastermind and Jamaat-ud-Dawa chief Hafiz Saeed and 12 other leaders of the charity, that is a front for the Lashkar-eTaiba, for terror financing, India would be watching the developments closely to see whether Islamabad is sincere in its action against terror this time. Islamabad’s move comes in the wake of a stern warning from the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) — which asked Pakistan to act on terror financing or be downgraded to the black list — and also as the International Monetary

Hafiz Saeed

Fund approved a $6 billion financial package for the cash-strapped country. It also comes ahead of Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan’s

upcoming visit to the US where he is to meet President Donald Trump. Saeed has been placed under house arrest in the past, let off after some days and then allowed to move around freely and spew venom against India. India has time and again conveyed to Pakistan that dialogue cannot resume unless Islamabad shows sincerity in cracking down against terror groups operating from its soil. Saeed, the founder of Lashkar-eTaiba (LeT) — a US-designated terror outfit — was placed under house arrest in September 2009, but was cleared of all charges a month later and allowed to move freely. In January 2017, Saeed was

placed under house arrest for disturbing peace and security, but was released in November the same year. Following India’s repeated requests for Saeed’s extradition, the US State Department in 2012 announced a $10 million reward for information leading to his arrest and conviction. On July 3, the Punjab Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) registered 23 cases relating to terror financing and facilitation against Saeed. The CTD, which registered the cases in five cities of Punjab, declared that the JuD was financing terrorism from the massive funds collected through non-profit organizations and trusts.

SECURITY AGENDA FOR MODI 2.0 India, located in one of the most geo-politically stressed regions of the world, faces multiple challenges to its security and, consequently, its economic growth

KAMAL KUMAR, NEW DELHI

I

ndia, the worlds largest democracy, has again elected a government brutally strong in numbers with no encumbrances of coalition politics to peg it down from its intended goals or the fulfillment of its pre-election promises. That the recent dance of democracy in India witnessed unparalleled, abusive recrimination, with political discourse having sunk to unimaginable depths hardly added to Indias image as a civilized democracy. Undisputedly, the BJP romped home exclusively on the platform of national security, a factor which must not be forgotten as the serious task of nation building now beckons the Narendra Modi government 2.0. India, located in one of the most geo-politically stressed regions of the world, faces multiple challenges to its security and, consequently, its economic growth. Crucial aspects of security preparedness for the nation must emerge from an all-encompassing national security doctrine. For its holistic formalization, the government must take into confidence all stakeholders/institutions within the nation concerned with security. Even service chiefs have generally been ignored by earlier governments in consultations on matters of national security or nuclear policies should not be emulated by this government.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi. (File Photo: IANS)

Combat capabilities of the Armed Forces take painfully long to achieve. It is no secret that India, confronted with an unenviable challenge of facing a two-anda-half front war (China, Pakistan and internal security) either individually or collusively - has been, for some years, ill-prepared. The new government must seriously factor in all endemic shortcomings which plague India’s security preparedness - be it shortage in budgetary allocations, bureaucratic sluggishness, corruption, as

alleged, in some defense deals, or any procedural shortcomings. All inherent problems confronting modernization of the Armed Forces will have to be systematically ironed out with alacrity. The allocations in the last budget were woefully around 1.59 per cent of the GDP. This must be raised to 3 per cent as recommended by successive parliamentary standing committees on defense. It is worth factoring that China spends nearly 7.5 per cent of its huge GDP on defense, impover-

ished Pakistan over 5 per cent, while the US spends 4.5 per cent of its GDP. Whether it be jet fighters (LCA/MMRCA/AMC/additional Rafales) or the depleting submarine fleet in our aging Air Force/Navy arsenals, the government must tide over all financial and bureaucratic hurdles to deliver to the services the wherewithal desperately required for the nation’s security. Lessons from the recent Balakot air operations need to be analyzed. The IAF must pursue its

re-equipping plans with conviction regarding the optimal mix between the fighter bombers/multirole/interceptor aircraft it requires. Somewhere, it appears unclear. Regrettably, India is the largest importer of armaments in the world. The new government must take measures to cut down arms imports by determinedly encouraging establishment of an indigenous industry to produce state-ofthe-art weaponry and equipment. Genuine public-private partnership in India, giving adequate impetus to the “Make in India” program, must be ensured. In today’s globalized economies there is merit in inviting major arms corporates to set up industry in India in collaboration with our Defence PSUs and private industry. The continuation or otherwise of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act in disturbed areas will have to be re-visited, keeping the current situation in mind. Both in Jammu & Kashmir and Naxal afflicted regions, there has been a spurt in terrorist activities; thus, coordinated and determined counter insurgency and counter terrorist policies are sinequa-non. Importantly, India’s nuclear preparedness, in the light of its NoFirst-Use policy, the alarmingly growing Pak nuclear arsenal and likely Pak-China collusion against India will have to be thoroughly analyzed and prophylactic measures adopted.

US out, Australia in when it comes to education Several recent developments and government policies suggest that the US is no longer the melting pot it hoped to be, nor is it welcoming of foreigners

Graduates are seen at the campus of University of Sydney, Australia. (Xinhua/Bai Xuefei/IANS)

AMIT DASGUPTA, NEW DELHI

A

ustralia is fast emerging as the preferred higher education destination for meritorious Indian students and there is credible speculation that it would challenge the traditional preference for the US before long. There are various reasons behind this. First, perceptions about the US have undergone a dramatic change. Several recent developments and government policies, including reportage of incidents of continued attacks against migrant and non-white communities, suggest that the US is no longer the melting pot it hoped to be, nor is it welcoming of foreigners. The usversus-them attitude has taken deep root triggering a sense of pervading nationalism and fostering a culture of intolerance. This is unfortunate because the US stood

for certain values that it appears to no longer uphold. Australia, on the other hand, with its commitment towards cultural diversity and embrace of multiculturalism offers a significantly welcoming living experience. Second, while the US, most certainly, is home to some of the most outstanding universities, such as, Harvard, MIT, Stanford, Princeton, Yale and others, most students gravitate towards lesser known universities. The attraction of the US was never for education but rather to live and work in the US. Big homes, two gas-guzzling cars and vacationing in Disneyland, the Grand Canyon or Las Vegas was the American dream that the best and the brightest Indians craved for. This dream lasted for several decades making the US the sought-after higher education destination.

Third, the discovery of Australia for under graduate and post graduate studies is a relatively recent phenomenon. There are four Australian universities in the world’s Top 50 as per the recent QS international rankings with UNSW jumping two places this year. With over 60,000 students on campus, one-third of who come from 150 countries, UNSW Sydney offers a unique learning and living experience that leverages global education with employability. It offers education at scale without compromising on quality. Finally, India-Australia relations are growing at a stable and predictable pace. There is increased understanding among the people and governments of both countries. With Washington, on the other hand, India is the relatively disadvantaged partner understandably because of the asymmetries in the relationship.

Mallya gets reprieve, can appeal extradition

The fugitive Vijay Mallya.

He moved High Court in a bid to stop against being sent to India IANS, LONDON

T

he UK High Court has allowed Indian business tycoon Vijay Mallya, charged with fraud and money-laundering back home, to appeal against his extradition to India, local media reported. Mallya, whose extradition order had been upheld by the Westminister Magistrates’ Court last year and his appeal against it rejected earlier this year, had moved the High Court in a last-ditch bid to stop against being sent to India. According to the reports, had his appeal failed, he would have been on his way back home shortly. In the hearing earlier this week,

IN BRIEF Nirav’s sister’s bank account frozen NEW DELHI: In a blow to fugitive diamond jeweller Nirav Modi, the Enforcement Directorate said the Singapore High Court has Nirav Modi ordered freezing of a bank account of Rs 44 crore related to his sister Purvi Modi and her husband Maiank Mehta. A senior ED official told IANS: “The Singapore High Court has ordered the freezing of the balance of $6.122 million (Rs 44.41 crore) in the bank account maintained in Singapore by Pavilion Point Corp, British Virgin Island, a company beneficially owned by Maiank Mehta and Purvi Modi on our request.” The bank account was attached by the ED under the money laundering act.

Man charged with killing wife, in-laws, aunt NEW YORK: An Indian-origin man has been charged with killing his wife, her parents and her aunt in a shooting rampage that had created fears of anti-Sikh violence in the US state of Ohio. West Chester police Chief Joel Herzog announced on Tuesday the arrest of Gurpreet Singh on four charges of murder, according to WCPO TV in Cincinnati. It reported that Butler County Prosecutor Mike Gmoser intended to seek the death penalty. —IANS

his lawyer Clare Montgomery argued that Mallya was being targeted on political considerations and had been “deliberately set up as a lightning rod of public anger at India’s bad debt”. It was unlikely he would get a fair trial in these circumstances, she added. She also argued that Chief Magistrate Emma Arbuthnot, who had cleared Mallya’s extradition last year, had made “very serious errors of fact and law”. The 63-year-old Mallya, chairman of now defunct Kingfisher Airlines, left India on March 2, 2016 after defaulting on loans amounting to Rs 9,000 crore. He has repeatedly denied fleeing, and said that he is ready to pay back

the money he owed to the Indian banks. India had in 2017 filed for Mallya’s extradition. A consortium of 13 banks, led by the State Bank of India, has initiated loan recovery proceedings against him in a special court in Mumbai under the Fugitive Economic Offenders Act. The Enforcement Directorate had also moved the Special Prevention of Money Laundering Act Court last year to get Mallya declared a “fugitive economic offender” and confiscate his properties, estimated at more than Rs 12,000 crore.

Kerala diaspora likely to get voting rights IANS, THIRUVANANTHAPURAM

C

hief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan informed the Kerala Assembly that his government will initiate discussions on how best the Kerala diaspora could participate in the upcoming local bodies elections. Vijayan, earlier this week, said

this after the Deputy Leader of Opposition M.K. Muneer asserted that it’s high time that the Kerala diaspora, who has been the backbone of the Kerala economy for several decades, should get their right to exercise their franchise. Munner said: “The situation today on diaspora voting rights has been cleared by the Lok Sabha and

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.

even the judiciary. Today in Canada and the US, their diaspora have the privilege of taking part in elections, even while they are out of the country. “So I request the Kerala government to see how best we can allow our diaspora to take part in elections, when the local bodies polls take place next year. We can look into options like proxy or even postal votes for them,” said Muneer. According to the latest figures, there are 2.1 million migrants from Kerala across the world, of which a good majority will be able to exercise their franchise if given opportunity.

T

he first Budget of the Modi 2.0 government on Friday sought to fire all engines to revive private investment and boost consumption offering a slew of tax concessions to companies, raise public spending for infrastructure and ensure credit flow for business expansion. Presenting her maiden Budget in Lok Sabha, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman noted the role of private sector in the growth story and termed India Inc as job-creators and also the nation’s wealth-creators. The statement seemed to be aimed at bridging the trust deficit between the government and the private sector. In line with prescriptions given in the Economic Survey, the Minister stressed on private sector-led investment, jobs, exports and consumption. Infrastructure would continue to be the key focus area with the government intending to invest Rs 100 lakh crore in infrastructure in next 5 years. Besides proposing to relax various rules for foreign and NRI investment into the country, Sitharaman

Further, the Union Budget has attempted to keep consumption level robust by taking much-needed step to tackle crisis in the shadow banking sector. The Budget 201920 proposed that government will give one-time six month credit guarantee for the purchase of assets of high rated NBFCs up to one lakh crore. The move is set to ensure flow of capital for well-performing NBFCs. In order to boost credit, the Finance Minister proposed to provide Rs 70,000 crore to public sector banks.

Industry leaders hail ‘transformational’ Union Budget IANS, NEW DELHI

H

ailing the Union Budget 2019-20 as “transformational”, industry leaders on Friday said it offers a lot for farmers and the common man. Speaking to IANS, Vineet Agarwal, Managing Director, Transport Corporation of India Limited (TCIL) said the Budget is encouraging for farmers and offers affordable housing to the people. “The Budget is nice for farmers as there is encouragement in various fields, including agricultural entrepreneurship. This is also nice for the common man as it is talking about affordable housing,” Agarwal, also Vice-President, Associated Chambers of Commerce and

Industry of India (ASSOCHAM), said. Calling the Budget “transformational”, Balkrishan Goenka, Group Chairman, Welspun Group and

President, ASSOCHAM said the Budget is good for farmers as it talks about agriculture infrastructure. “One of the main issues before

the farmers is lack of infrastructure. There is no proper infrastructure for food grains. The Budget is good for farmers from this point of view,” he told IANS. He also said Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s maiden budget is a mega investment-oriented initiative with a strong focus on scaling up rural infrastructure and demand along with a slew of tax simplification measures, aimed at boosting growth, and maintaining a high level of fiscal discipline. At an interactive session organized by ASSOCHAM, Goenka said the Budget is aimed at taking the Indian economy to USD five trillion by 2025. He said, in the Budget, the government has focused on affordable

housing with higher tax benefits to end users, start ups, sustainable development, and ‘Make in India’. It also gives a firm assurance of ease of living for common citizens and businesses by tax authorities, he added. “The initiatives like e-assessment, inter-changeability of PAN and Aadhaar, and digital payments would make a big difference to tax payers. “Likewise, the increase in the threshold for lower corporate tax of 25 per cent to Rs 400 crore annual turnover would encourage higher investment which would also get a boost from proposals like further liberalization of FDI norms in sectors like insurance intermediaries and aviation,” Goenka said.

HK crisis: Britain warns China Violence escalated in Hong Kong when the protesters earlier this week stormed Hong Kong’s Legislative Council and vandalized the interior of the building IANS, LONDON

B

ritish Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt on July 4 again warned China against “repressing” violent protesters in Hong Kong and asked it to listen to the “root causes” of demonstrators’ concerns. “The way to deal with that violence is not by repression, it is by understanding the root causes of the concerns of the demonstrators that freedoms that they have had for their whole life could be about to be undermined by this new extradition law,” he told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme. Tensions between the UK and China have risen since Hunt backed demonstrators in Hong Kong who have been protesting against a controversial extradition

18 Islamic State militants killed in Iraq BAGHDAD: A total of 18 Islamic State (IS) militants have been killed in operations by Iraqi security forces and airstrikes by international US-led coalition aircraft, the Iraqi military said. In Iraq’s western province of Anbar, four IS militants were killed and their vehicle destroyed when paramilitary tribal fighters raided their hideout in Akashat area in the desert near the border with Syria, the media office of the Joint Operations Command (JOC) said in a statement on Wednesday, Xinhua reported. bill, which critics say could be used to send political dissidents to mainland China. Violence escalated in Hong

Kong when the protesters earlier this week stormed Hong Kong’s Legislative Council (LegCo) and vandalized the interior of the

building. Beijing on Tuesday condemned the demonstrators and called on local authorities to restore social order. Following the chaos, Hunt said on Tuesday that China must “honor” the commitments mentioned in the Sino-British agreement signed when Hong Kong was returned to Beijing as an autonomous region. He warned Beijing that the UK would always put its principles before commercial interests, as he urged China to honor the “one country, two systems” agreement over Hong Kong. China had slammed the Foreign Secretary for his “shameless” remarks and said it has formally complained to the UK over Hunt’s statement. Beijing also warned the UK not to “interfere in its domes-

tic affairs” and labelled it hypocritical”. Hunt ratcheted up the row on Thursday by repeating his concerns and saying the UK was keeping its options open on how it would respond. “Hong Kong is part of China, we recognize that. We are simply saying that we also have an agreement with the People’s Republic of China and we would expect that to be honored. “China is a country that has benefited massively from the application of a rules-based international system. And so to not to honor this very important agreement between the UK and China, of course, would have consequences for China as well as for the UK,” the British Foreign Secretary said.

US hostile despite talks: North Korea IANS, UNITED NATIONS

N

orth Korea has accused Washington of being “hellbent on hostile acts”, days after US President Donald Trump and regime leader Kim Jong-un held a historic meeting and agreed to resume nuclear talks. Nortk Korea’s delegation to the UN said on July 3 that the US was “obsessed with sanctions” while responding to an allegation that Pyongyang had breached a cap on refined petroleum imports.

The delegation’s remarks come in response to a joint letter sent by the US, France, Germany and the UK to all UN member states that called for further sanctions on Pyongyang, the BBC reported. The letter reportedly asked all members to send expatriate North Korean workers home. The development comes after Trump met Kim on June 30 in the heavily fortified demilitarized zone which divides the two Koreas and the two sides agreed to set up teams to resume stalled negotiations on

countries in recent times. North Korea also accused Washington of attempting to “undermine the peaceful atmosphere” on the Korean peninsula.

W

ith plans of forging a “strong naval cooperation” in the Indo-Pacific region in mind, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, US President Donald Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Friday discussed ways to jointly build infrastructure and ensure peace and security in the maritime zone. The three leaders decided to make the summit meetings under the Japan-America-India (JAI) format an annual affair to “ensure successful cooperation in multiple areas, including maritime security, quality infrastructure, and advancing peace and prosperity in the Indian Ocean and Pacific region and beyond,”

according to a White House statement. The leaders “reaffirmed the critical importance of strengthening USIndia-Japan cooperation to reinforce

shared core democratic values, which promote global security and prosperity,” the statement said on the trilateral meeting. The deliberations among the

three leaders on trilateral military cooperation assume significance in view of China’s assertiveness in the recent times in the region. China, in order to demonstrate its growing global ambitions, is rapidly expanding its navy and is expanding its footprint in the Indo-Pacific region, including by building infrastructure in several countries dotting the maritime zone. To counter the growing Chinese assertiveness, the US has been pushing India to assume a bigger role in the region, particularly in the maritime zone which stretches from Africa to the west coast of the US. “Today’s meeting of the JAI (Japan, America, India) Trilateral was a productive one,” Modi tweeted.

3 killed, 24 missing in dam burst Ratnagiri (Maharashtra): At least three persons were killed and another 24 missing after a small dam burst near Bhendewadi hamlet after a torrential downpour, an official said here on Wednesday. The incident happened when the Tivare Dam, which had started overflowing after heavy rain, breached soon after, Resident Deputy Collector Datta Bhadakawad told IANS. As water gushed out creating a flood-like situation, at least seven villages downstream were inundated and a dozen houses in Bhendewadi with 14 families which were washed away. Teams of the fire brigade and NDRF from Pune and Sindhudurg, besides local volunteers, have launched rescue operations. Top civil and police officials also rushed to the spot. The dam was built in 2000 and people in the area claim they had informed the district authorities of its leakage two years back.

39 people were killed as relentless and record rain left Mumbai paralysed

Rain wreaks mayhem in Maharashtra IANS, MUMBAI

A

t least 39 persons were killed across Maharashtra as relentless rain created mayhem and left Mumbai paralysed with the country’s commercial capital being pounded by record rainfall, officials said. Offering no respite, heavy showers are expected to continue most of this week, the weather office said. Battered with over 375 mm rain, the highest July rainfall within a 24hour period since July 1974, Mumbai has received around 35 percent of its average annual total rainfall.

As a precautionary measure, the state government declared a public holiday in the city and the city administration ordered all schools and colleges to be shut while the Education Department postponing all examinations scheduled for Tuesday. Many parts of Mumbai city and its suburbs, as well as towns in adjoining Raigad, Thane and Palghar districts, turned into huge tracts of muddy water, witnessing people struggling to safety in waist-deep water. Small vehicles were submerged, and several tempos, trucks and heavy vehicles stranded on the roads adding to traffic snarls.

The inundation also stopped local and long-distance trains in their tracks and stranding thousands as road traffic, trains and flights were hit for hours. At least 150 BEST buses in Mumbai were also submerged and stranded at various locations since this morning, but operations continued near-normal with diversions and cancellations of services. The Central Railway had stopped its services since early Tuesday as tracks were underwater in many places, especially Sion, Chunabhatti, Kurla, Bhandup and many commuters waded through the flood waters to reach their destinations.

After nearly 15 hours, the CR resumed full services around 5.15 pm, though the Western Railway managed to trudge along with delays and cancellations. Domestic and international flight operations were hit at Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport due to heavy rains coupled with a SpiceJet aircraft with 167 passengers overshooting the runway and getting stuck in soft mud. With the stuck plane blocking the main runway, at least 55 incoming flights including 26 international were diverted, 13 go-arounds, 18 incoming flights including four international cancelled and 24 departures including

four international cancelled, said a spokesperson for Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL). A 150-metre long ramp was being built to push the stranded aircraft and clear the runway, but it was expected to take another 48 hours till the alternative (shorter) runway is operational. As parts of Mumbai experienced a lull in rains for a few hours this afternoon, thousands of harried people rushed out of their homes to buy stocks of vegetables, fruits, groceries, milk from local markets, despite the higher rates being charged. The rain also caused a spate of fatalities.

Mumbai paralysed by record July rainfall IANS, MUMBAI

R

eceiving the record rainfall, Mumbai was paralysed, with most roads getting clogged and local train services, the financial capitals lifeline, virtually coming to a standstill. Flight operations at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport were also hit severely due to heavy rains and a SpiceJet aircraft blocking a runway after overshooting it shortly before midnight. The Maharashtra government declared a precautionary public holiday on Tuesday in Mumbai, with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis requesting people to stay indoors unless they have absolutely important work outside. The BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) declared a

holiday for all schools and colleges, and the state government expanded it to include other parts of coastal Konkan region. Mumbai received 375 mm of rainfall on Monday, making it the maximum July downpour that the

city has seen over a 24-hour period, breaking the record of 1974. The Central Railway (CR) suspended services at several spots between Mumbai-Thane and suburban train services were disrupted on the Western Railway due to

incessant record rain, officials said. Long-distance trains from different parts of India, expected to reach Mumbai, have also been stranded at various locations en route, details of which were awaited. Till Tuesday noon, at least 55 incoming flights were diverted, including 26 international. There were 13 go-arounds, and cancellations of 18 incoming flights including four international and 24 departures including four international, said a spokesperson for Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL). Road traffic also continued to be sluggish for the second consecutive day in the city and the suburbs as many areas were waterlogged and the subways in Andheri, Jogeshwari, Vile Parle and Dahisar flooded.

A road caved in near a construction site in Chandivali and locals claimed that some people may have been washed away in the incident. A few vehicles and autorickshaws were stuck in the cave-in, which was at least 10 feet deep, said a local resident Pradeep Menon. “In the past 12 hours, the city has received an unprecedented 300 to 400 mm rain, the highest in the past decade. The existing drainage systems are unable to cope with such a heavy downpour, coupled with a high tide this afternoon,” Fadnavis told mediapersons. The Indian Navy deployed rubber boats and a team of naval divers from INS Tanaji, armed with lifebouys, life-jackets and food packets, rescued around 1,000 people stranded in Kranti Nagar slums of Kurla.

hether it is Dangal, Stree, Luka Chuppi and the upcoming Jabariya Jodi — actor-singer Aparshakti Khurana is gradually making his space in Bollywood, and making his presence count. The radio jockey-turnedactor says he had to wait patiently for the best offers to come his way. Aparshakti’s kitty is full with films like Street Dancer 3D, Kanpuriye and Sidharth Malhotra-starrer Jabariya Jodi. Looking back at his journey so far, the actor told IANS: “Initially, after the success of Dangal when I hoped that a lot of offers will come my way, many a times people (casting directors) couldn’t place my face for a character as they had a strong image of the village boy I played in Dangal. finally good roles are coming my way.” Recounting an incident, he said: “It was the screening of Dangal. During the interval when people came out, I asked them how did they like it. Some of them just said,

‘Where were you in the film?’ “When I said, ‘Sir, I am playing the brother of Geeta and Babita... I am playing Omkar’, they said that I look very different from a village boy in real life. “I took it as a compliment but

later when I realized that that image was limiting casting directors to place me in any other role, I was a little upset. It was 2016 then.” Aparshakti, brother of actor Ayushmann Khurrana, was also a part of films like Badrinath Ki Dulhania, Happy Phirr Bhag Jayegi and Rajma Chawal” among others. However, the actor is quite happy with everything that is happening in the present time, as he is doing big banner films and also released his first single Kudiye ni recently. “I always loved music, but when I was struggling in my acting career, music took a backseat. Now I am in a good space. I am enjoying my acting”. “I will keep writing music side by side, and when a song is ready to share with my listeners, I will do that,” he said.

‘Article 15’ film: A hard-hitting, eye opener

ood morning India! Director Anubhav Sinha’s Article 15, is a hard-hitting, wake-up call to those who unknowingly and unwittingly indulge in caste and political polarization. It offers nothing new, but it mirrors our society to the core and reminds us that our Constitution is under threat and that we are living in ruthless and dangerous times. The title of the film centres around Article 15 of our Constitution, which is about Right to Equality. It prohibits discrimination of Indians on basis of religion, race,

This coolly passionate film mostly deals with Ayan’s thoughts rather than his life. It provides an involving examination and analysis of the ideas and ideals that consume his every waking moment, which is beautifully captured by his interaction with Aditi. Also, he brings to the fore that Article 15 of the Constitution is way more than mere words to him when he counters his senior (Nassar) who tries to suppress him, during an inquiry. court in Mumbai on Wednesday granted anticipatory bail to Kerala CPI-M leader Kodiyeri Balakrishnan’s son Binoy Kodiyeri in a rape case, but levied stiff conditions. The order was pronounced by the Dindoshi court after being deferred four times. Among the conditions were that Kodiyeri, who is underground for a week now with a Mumbai police team which visited Kerala but were unable to trace him, should present himself before the Oshiwara police every Monday for the next one month, deposit a sum of Rs 25,000 and furnish one surety.

He should also hand over his blood samples, if asked by the police probe team. The court also directed Kodiyeri to see that he does nothing to influence the case or the witnesses

He should also hand over his blood samples, if asked by the police probe team and also stopped him from travelling outside the country, without taking the court’s permission. However, counsel of the victim, a 33-year-old Mumbai-based woman who alleges that Kodiyeri sexually exploited her for several years on the promise of marriage,

told the media that they will appeal the decision in a higher court. According to the FIR filed at the Oshiwara police station in Mumbai’s Andheri, they also have a child. The woman registered the complaint on June 13 after she came to know that Kodiyeri was already married. According to her complaint, she entered into a relationship with Kodiyeri while working at a dance bar in Dubai in 2008 and now has an eight-year-old child with him. She said that till 2015, he even used to send her money every month, for which she has already produced documentary evidence. Despite the CPI-M’s national and state leadership, including the

In a statement issued here, Stalin referring to news reports said it was joyous to read that Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi is in favor of translating Supreme Court judgements in regional languages. As a result of this initiative there will be an opportunity to get the Supreme Court judgements in five regional languages including Kan-

The case related to alleged loss caused to the Tamil Nadu Housing Board (TNHB) while getting a residential plot allotted. The case was registered on July 23, 2011 on a complaint filed by petitioner Shankar. The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) probed the case.

Trump briefly steps into N. Korea

China calls Trump-Kim meeting ‘constructive’

U

S President Donald Trump on Sunday became the first sitting American leader to step foot into North Korea after he briefly entered the country before holding a bilateral meeting with Pyongyang’s Kim Jong-un at the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), that divides the two Koreas. Trump, who was on a two-day visit to South Korea, first walked toward the Military Demarcation Line (MDL), which divides the truce village of Panmunjom, also called the Joint Security Area. Then Kim showed up and approached Trump, reports Yonhap News Agency. They shook hands and crossed the line together into the northern side. They posed for photos before walking across it into South Korea. Trump told the media that it was a “great honour to cross that line (DMZ)”. This was the first time for leaders of the two nations to hold a meeting at Panmunjom since the Korean War ended with the Armistice Agreement in 1953. Kim, meanwhile, deemed the meeting “as a historic moment”, adding that the crossing reflected his decision to open a new future in Pyongyang-Washington relations. They were later joined by South Korean President Moon Jae-in. The three leaders walked into the Freedom House, a building on the

UN welcomes dialogue UNITED NATIONS: UN SecretaryGeneral Antonio Guterres has welcomed the announcement that the US and North Korea will resume workinglevel dialogue. “The UN Sec- Antonio Guterres retary-General welcomes the meetings in Panmunjom involving the leaders of North Korea, South Korea and the US, particularly the announcement that the North Korea and the US will resume working-level dialogue,” Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for Guterres, said. “The Secretary-General fully supports the continued efforts of the parties to establish new relations towards sustainable peace, security and complete and verifiable denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula,” he said. — IANS

Kim described the meeting as a historic moment, saying the crossing reflected his decision to open a new future in Pyongyang-Washington relations.

southern side. Kim and Trump were seated together for joint press availability and apparently held closed-door bilateral talks.

“We just had a very, very good meeting with Chairman Kim,” Trump said after parting with the North Korean leader at the DMZ.

Following the bilateral talks, Trump told the media that he agreed with Kim to restart talks after nuclear negotiations stalled earlier this year. Following the bilateral talks, Trump told the media that he agreed with Kim to restart talks after nuclear negotiations stalled earlier this year after the two leaders met for a second time in Hanoi, Vietnam. Kim and Trump first came face-to-face during their historic summit last June in Singapore.

Trump added that the teams would begin working and meeting over the next two to three weeks. The American side will be represented by US special representative for North Korea, Stephen Biegun. Trump has also invited Kim to Washington, but it was not immediately clear if the latter has accepted the invitation.

BEIJING: The Chinese government said the meeting between the US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un at the inter-Korean border was “constructive” and something that must be welcomed. “It was a constructive meeting that had positive outcomes and it is especially important for the DPRK (North Korea) and the US for restarting working-level conversations in the near future,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang said at a press conference this week. He said that Chinese President Xi Jinping’s recent state visit to North Korea underscored the importance of resolving political issues affecting the Korean Peninsula. The meeting between the leaders of the US and North and South

Korea on the border “serves the common interest of all parties and the international community”, Geng added. “We hope both sides can see this as an opportunity, meet each other halfway, explore effective ways to resolve each other’s concerns and work for more progress in denuclearization and political settlement of the peninsula.” The meeting has provided impetus to revive denuclearization talks, which have been stagnant since the failed Hanoi summit between Trump and Kim in February. The unscheduled meeting came just nine days after Xi’s first state visit to Pyongyang, an event hailed by North Korean state media, which highlighted the strengthened ties between the two nations. — IANS

If Kim accepts the invitation, it would be the first time a North Korean leader will visit the US. The Trump-Kim meeting was confirmed earlier in the day by South Korean President Moon Jaein at the Presidential Palace here during a joint press conference with his American counterpart, Yonhap reported.

Trump arrived at the Presidential Palace after attending a “business leaders’ event” on Sunday morning with the heads of some South Korean conglomerates. During his previous visit to South Korea in November 2017, Trump pushed for a DMZ trip with Moon by chopper. But it was cancelled due to bad weather.

‘WH Press Secretary scuffles with N. Korean guards’ IANS, WASHINGTON

N

ewly-appointed White House Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham was reportedly bruised in a scuffle with North Korean guards as US President Donald Trump met Pyongyang leader Kim Jong-un. A video of the incident shows Grisham inside the Freedom House in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), that divides the two Koreas, on Sunday pushing an aide as some North Korean security guards tried to prevent members of the American press pool from entering the room where Trump and Kim were meeting. White House and foreign affairs correspondents tweeted about the encounter, saying Grisham got into a struggle with North Korean guards to ensure reporters had access to the meeting. In a Twitter post, CNN’s Jim

White House Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham.

Acosta said: “New WH Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham got into a scuffle with the North Koreans to move members of the WH press

pool into position to cover Trump and Kim, I’m told. Grisham was a bit bruised. Source called it an all out brawl.”

CNN’s Allie Malloy tweeted: “Grisham was seen on camera pushing back North Koreans who were blocking US press. Shouting “Go! Go!” as she created a path for press to join the Trump-Kim meeting.” Trump on Sunday made history by becoming the first US President to set foot into North Korea. The US President and Kim two met for nearly one hour at the Freedom House on the South Korean side of the DMZ. This was the first time for leaders of the two nations to hold a meeting at Panmunjom since the Korean War ended with the Armistice Agreement in 1953. Kim called the meeting a “historic moment”, adding that the crossing reflected his decision to open a new future in PyongyangWashington relations. ndia’s batting in the last 10 overs at the Edgbaston Cricket Ground might have given hope to some fans of a Bangladesh fightback, but two things they forgot -- the experience of the Indian bowling attack and the slowness of the wicket. After all, this was the same pitch where India played England on Sunday. Chasing 315 for a win, Bangladesh folded up for 286 as India not only won the match by 28 runs, but also qualified for the knockout stages. Defending 314, in-form Shakib Al Hasan (66 runs off 74 balls) was the only real threat for the Indian bowlers as the Bangladesh batsmen

IN BRIEF Pro Kabaddi season 7 to begin on July 20 MUMBAI: The seventh edition of the Pro Kabaddi League will begin on July 20, organizers said in a statement. “To improve the overall experience for spectators and television viewers, PKL Season VII will commence each of its city-legs on Saturdays and matches will begin at 7:30 pm throughout,” Anupam Goswami, CEO, Mashal Sports, and League Commissioner, said. The league will go on from July till October, the statement added.

Charged England end India’s winning streak BIRMINGHAM: The stage was set for a vintage M.S. Dhoni finish as India needed 104 off the last 10 overs with the former India skipper just in and warming up at the Edgbaston Cricket Ground earlier this week. But his attempt to take the game deep saw India left with 57 needed off the last 18 balls.

iddle-order Indian batsman Ambati Rayudu has announced his retirement from all forms of cricket. Speaking to IANS, a senior BCCI official confirmed that Rayudu had written to the BCCI announcing his retirement from all forms of cricket. The right-handed batsman scored 1,694 runs at an average of 47.05 with a top score of 124* in the 55 ODIs he played for India. He scored three centuries and 10 fifties and had a strike rate of 79.04. In six T20Is, he scored 42 runs at an average of 10.50. Besides, he also

played 97 first-class matches in which he amassed 6,151 runs. Rayudu was not included in the

15-member squad for the ongoing World Cup. Despite being named in the reserves, he was not called up in

the squad after Shikhar Dhawan and Vijay Shankar suffered injuries and Rishabh Pant and Mayank Agarwal were, instead, named as their replacements. After he again missed a spot in India’s World Cup team, Iceland Cricket in a bizarre tweet on Tuesday, offered the 33-year-old permanent residency in their country so that he could play for them. After his initial WC snub, Rayudu had expressed his displeasure and questioned the selectors’ decision to pick Shankar over him with a tweet that mocked a statement by head selector M.S.K. Prasad who said that “Shankar gives three dimensions” to the team.

Bairstow, who scored a matchwinning 111 against India in Edgbaston on Sunday, cracked 106 off 99 balls (15x4, 1x6) as Jason Roy also struck his second fifty in a row

by scoring 60 off 61 balls (8x4). England posted 305/8 in 50 overs after electing to bat first. Bairstow became the first-ever English player to score two backto-back hundreds in World Cups. It was also his third successive in ODIs against New Zealand. Chasing 306 for victory, New Zealand gave a poor account of themselves, losing wickets at regular intervals and never really posing any threat. For the Kiwis, who were 186 all out in 45 overs, wick-

World of Peace and Unity: Sant Rajinder Singh ji Maharaj

CHICAGO,IL - The World was meant to be a Garden of Eden and a heaven of bliss. The world we see before us is vastly altered from the world of yesterday. We live in an age in which we have made tremendous progress in the areas of science and technology. Despite our technological and scientific advances, the world is still aflame with fires of war. We find strife and dissension throughout the world. We find countries at war. Many nations are embroiled in internal conflicts. The peace of world, for want of proper understanding, hangs today by a very slender thread. Daily we hear accounts of suffering and inhumanity. The social injustices and economic inequalities rampart everywhere, have made people sceptical of God and distrustful of each other. The armed peace, the perpetual fear and inherent happiness in which we live, is not an ideal state to be desired. We may wonder how God, who has made such a beautiful world can tolerate the tremendous suffering of His creations. Today the world is crying out for a better understanding for peace and freedom from conflict. If we could return to our true state and realize we are soul, we would find lasting peace and ecstasy. If we could tap deeply within ourselves, penetrating beyond the outer form of this physical body and mind, we would find a spring of eternal peace and happiness. When we examine our day-to-day life, we may question how it is possible to realize our true self and God. The idea of real and lasting inner peace is not a mere ideology, but can be turned into an actual reality if one could but introvert and peep within to know his real self. This can be achieved only through close contact with some Godman or Spiritual Teacher, who is not only well versed in theory but

Sant Rajinder Singh ji Maharaj

also in practice of Science of soul. The art of inverting our attention from the world outside to that within is popularly known as Meditation. Through meditation we can tap into the fountain of bliss, light and joy within us and return to our original state of unity with God. The divine Light and Sound awaits us at the seat of the soul, between and behind the two eyebrows. Scriptures and mystics referred to this point as the third or single eye. The Bible says, “If thine eye be single thy whole body shall be full of light.” It is difficult to describe - using the limitations of human language - the absolute ecstasy one experiences when we become united with the God. Through meditation we can transform ourselves into ambassadors of God’s love and Light on earth. As the soul journeys into

the beyond and experiences its relationship with God, it has a great realization. It sees each living thing, whether human, animal or plant as a part of God. It sees that there is soul in every living thing. Once we experience that we are all a part of God, we begin to see God’s light shining in all. We see all creation as children of the one Parent. This is a profound realization that brings about fundamental changes in the way we live. We develop love for everyone and every living creature. We begin to love all people equally. We develop tolerance and patience towards those around us. We develop the sublime qualities of compassion and understanding. There is peace, satisfaction and harmony which fill us completely. The soul achieves its ultimate fulfilment and rests eternally in joy and happiness. One by one, step by step, all human beings will find that they can attain true happiness and personal fulfilment by merging their souls with God through the process of meditation. In this way we can bring about peace and unity on our planet. Peace and unity begin within each of us. When we merge in God and see the light of God in every being, we truly realize the unity. If we truly wish to achieve human unity, we must first experience it ourselves. Then only we will be able to spread the fragrance of unity wherever we go. Others will be inspired by our example and will begin to emulate us. There would be an atmosphere of peace and tranquillity in the world. World peace can only become a reality when each of us individually has peace in our own circles. If we bring peace into our individual spheres, the effect will be cumulative, and it will contribute to world peace. Each of us must do his or her own small part to bring about the fulfilment of the noble dream.

Doctor Prescribed Controlled Substances After License was Revoked BY A STAFF WRITER S TA N F O R D , PA - A St a m f o rd d o c t o r w a s arraigned on charges related to the distribution of certain prescription drugs. Dr. Ajay Ahuja, a Dr. Ajay Ahuja primary care physician, was arrested by Stamford police along with his office manager Rana Purvi, at his office. It came after a lengthy investigation by the Drug Enforcement Administration. According to Capt. Richard Conklin, the doctor had his license to prescribe controlled substances revoked in February. He also had to pay a $200,000 fine. “This investigation reveals even after that, he continued to prescribe controlled substances,” said Conklin. The revocation came after the DEA concluded Dr. Ahuja prescribed excessive amounts of controlled substances and didn’t maintain adequate patient charts to justify his actions. Ahuja’s attorney Glenn Gazin says his client just hadn’t fully mastered record keeping. Law enforcement said the doctor continued to write prescriptions for medications like Suboxone, Adderall, and Clonazepam one week after the revocation went into place. Gazin argues Dr. Ahuja made a mistake – misunderstanding when the revocation went into effect. Dr. Ahuja’s license to prescribe other medications was not affected by the DEA decision. Dr. Ahuja and Rana Purvi are both charged with illegal distribution of a controlled substance. The doctor’s bond was lowered to $100,000 at his arraignment. Purvi posted bond Wednesday night and will be arraigned next month.

BY A STAFF WRITER NEW YORK, NY — An Uber driver has been sentenced to prison for kidnapping a female passenger. Twenty-five-year-old Harbir Parmar, of Howard Beach, was sentenced Monday to three years in prison, followed by three years of supervised release. On Feb. 21, 2018, Parmar, who was working as an Uber driver, picked up a female passenger who wanted to be driven from New York City to White Plains, New York. While Parmar was driving, the passenger fell asleep in the backseat. Parmar then changed her destination to an address in Boston, Massachusetts. When the woman woke up, they were in Connecticut. She asked to be taken to White Plains or the nearest police station, but Parmar instead left her on the side of an interstate in Branford, Connecticut. The victim went to a nearby convenience store for help. Parmar also pleaded guilty to wire fraud charges. Authorities say for more than a year, Parmar would send Uber false information about his customers’ destinations and false cleaning fees. As part of his sentence, he has been ordered to pay $3,642 in restitution and forfeiture.

community news Executives of Staffing Companies Charged with Visa Fraud 4

29

FRIDAY,05 JULY, 2019

BY UNITED STATES DEPT.OF JUSTICE NEWARK, N.J. – Four executives of two information technology staffing companies have been arrested on charges of fraudulently using the H-1B visa program to gain an unfair advantage over competitors, U.S. Attorney Craig Carpenito announced today. Vijay Mane, 39, of Princeton, New Jersey; Venkataramana Mannam, 47, of Edison, New Jersey; Fernando Silva, 53, of Princeton; and Sateesh Vemuri, 52, of San Jose, California, are each charged by complaint with one count of conspiracy to commit visa fraud. Vemuri made his initial appearance July 1, 2019, before U.S. Magistrate Judge Steven C. Mannion in Newark federal court. Mannam and Silva appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Leda Dunn Wettre in Newark federal court on June 25, 2019; Mane appeared before Judge Wettre on June 27, 2019. All were released on $250,000 bond. According to the documents filed in this case and statements made in court: Mane, Mannam, and Vemuri controlled two IT staffing companies located in Middlesex County, New Jersey – Procure Professionals Inc. and Krypto IT Solutions Inc. Silva and Mannam also controlled another New Jersey staffing company,

referred to in the complaint as “Client A.” The defendants used Procure and Krypto to recruit foreign nationals and sponsor them for H-1B visas, which allow recipients to live and work temporarily in the U.S. in positions requiring specialized skills. To expedite their visa applications, the defendants caused Procure and Krypto to file H-1B applications falsely asserting that the foreign worker/beneficiaries had already secured positions at Client A, when, in reality, no such positions existed. Instead, the defendants used these fraudulent

applications to build a “bench” of job candidates already admitted to the United States, who could then be hired out immediately to client companies without the need to wait through the visa application process, giving the defendants an advantage over their competitors in the staffing industry. The conspiracy charge carries a maximum potential penalty of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine. U.S. Attorney Carpenito credited special agents of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), under the direction of Special Agent in Charge Brian Michael; U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, Newark Office of Fraud Detection and National Security; the USCIS National Benefits Center; and the U.S. Department of Labor, Office of Inspector General, New York Region, under the direction of Special Agent in Charge Michael C. Mikulka, with the investigation leading to the charges. The government is represented by Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah A. Sulkowski of the U.S. Attorney’s Office’s Public Protection Unit in Newark. The charges and allegations contained in the complaint are merely accusations, and the defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.

Indian American Suspect Arrested of Murdering Wife, In-Laws in Ohio

Texting While Driving Could Lead to License Suspension Under New Illinois Law

BY A STAFF WRITER SPRINGFIELD, IL — A new legislative initiative will strength the consequences of drivers in Illinois caught texting while driving. A news release from Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White says House Bill 4846, which takes effect July 1, will count first-time incidences of driving while operating a handheld mobile device as a “moving violation.” Under state law, moving violations appear on motorists’ driving record, and drivers who receive three moving violations in a year see their driver’s license suspended. Prior to HB 4846, state law treated first offenses of distracted driving as a “nonmoving violation,” so only repeat offenses appeared on motorists’ driving record. First-time moving and nonmoving violations both carry a fine of $75 dollars, which increases gradually with each additional offense. Any driver caught texting while driving starting July 1 will have that moving violation recorded on their driving record and additional fines and court costs determined by a judge. Anyone with three moving violations within 12 months could have their driver’s license suspended.

7 Charged in Vandalism of ‘The Bean” in Millennium Park

(L-R) Amarjit Kaur, Hakikat Singh Panag, Shailenderjit Kaur & Paramjit Kaur

BY STAFF WRITER WEST CHESTER, OH- A West Chester, Ohio, truck driver was arrested July 2 and charged with four counts of aggravated murder for allegedly killing his wife and in-laws. Indian American Gurpreet Singh, 37, is being held in jail in Branford, Connecticut, where he was staying at the time of his arrest. He is in custody and is awaiting extradition back to West Chester. In a press statement, Branford police said they had located Singh, who was staying at a residence in town, and arrested him in the parking lot of a local Walmart. On the evening of April 28, Singh called 911 to say he had found four members of his family lying on the floor of his apartment, bleeding to death. He told the Cincinnati

Enquirer: “I have no words. The trauma has been too much. It’s too hard to even think of all that has happened. My brain is not working.” Police noted that Singh called for help from the neighbors as he was making the call to 911. The local Sikh American community provided a lot of support to the widowed man after the shootings and told local media that at least two of the victims were active members of the temple. The coroner’s office declared all four deaths as homicides, and noted that 18 bullet wounds had been found on the four bodies. The four victims were Singh’s wife Shalinderjit Kaur, her parents Amarjit Kaur and Hakikat Singh Panag, and her sister Paramjit Kaur. Food was burning on the

Gurpreet Singh, 37 arrested

stove when police arrived to investigate. Singh was arrested without incident in Branford, said Herzog. He gave no motive for the crime. Singh and his wife had two children, who are safe. Butler County, Ohio, Chief Prosecutor Mike Gmoser told, at the briefing that the case will be presented to a grand jury once Singh is extradited. He disputed media reports that said he was seeking the death penalty, adding that the grand jury would make that decision. Ajaib Singh identified himself as the brother of two of the victims and said the family was thankful for the efforts of West Chester police, other law enforcement agencies and the Sikh community of the Cincinnati region.

BY A STAFF WRITER CHICAGO,IL- Seven people were charged after Chicago’s iconic “Bean” installation in Millennium Park and the Cancer Survivors’ Wall in Maggie Daley Park were both vandalized earlier this week. Seven people were charged after Chicago’s iconic “Bean” installation in Millennium Park and the Cancer Survivors’ Wall in Maggie Daley Park were both vandalized earlier this week. Two of the suspects -- Tino Guzman and Rey Ortega, both 20 years old from Chicago -- were charged with felony criminal damage to government property and criminal trespass to state land, Chicago Police said. Five others, four from Chicago and one from Berkeley, were charged with criminal trespass to state land: Angel Diaz, 20; Robert Rickard, 20; Chasity Guzman, 21; and Guadalupe Carrillo, 20. A 17-year-old juvenile was charged with being in a public park after hours. An off-duty security guard who was boarding a bus at the time spotted the group and alerted authorities, according to police, who took seven people, all described as adults, into custody.
