VENICE FILM FESTIVAL TO OPEN WITH ITALY’S ‘LACCI’ FROM DANIELE LUCHETTI

D

aniele Luchetti’s Italian marital drama The Ties (Lacci), starring Alba Rohrwacher, Luigi Lo Cascio and Laura Morante, will open this year’s Venice International Film Festival, the festival announced Friday. The Ties, an adaptation of the novel by Domenico Starnone, will be the first Italian film to open Venice in 11 years. It will screen out of competition. The 1980s-set drama traces a marriage in collapse. Aldo and Vanda have been married 30 years but their relationship is tested when Aldo falls in love with the young Lidia. “It’s been eleven years since the Venice International Film Festival was opened by an Italian film,” said Venice Festival director Alberto Barbera. “This happy opportunity was offered by the wonderful film directed by Daniele Luchetti ... the film is also a sign of the promising phase in Italian cinema today, continuing the positive trend seen in recent years, which the quality of the films invited to Venice this year will surely confirm.” Venice, which runs Sept. 2-12, will be the first big film festival to hold a physical event

in the wake of the COVID-19 outbreak in Europe. Italy was hard-hit by the pandemic but has begun to emerge from the crisis and has reopened cinemas and allowed international travel to resume. “Recently, we have all feared that cinema might become extinct,” Luchetti said. “Yet during the quarantine it gave us comfort, like a light gleaming in a cavern. Today we have understood something else: that films, television series, novels, are indispensable in our lives. Long live festivals, then, which allow us to come together to celebrate the true meaning of our work. If anyone thought it served no

purpose, they now know it is important to everyone. With Lacci I am honored to open the dances of the first great festival in unexpected times.” Luchetti is an established name on the European arthouse scene. His 2007 coming-of-age tale My Brother is an Only Child premiered in Un Certain Regard in Cannes. 2010 follow up Our Life screened in Cannes competition and won the best actor honor for star Elio Germano. Oscar-winning actress Cate Blanchett will head up the international jury at this year’s Venice Film Festival. Venice will unveil its competition line up

next week.

China Orders U.S. to Shut Consulate in Chengdu, Retaliating for Houston HiIndia Newsdesk China has ordered the United States to close its consulate in Chengdu, southwestern Chinese province, the Chinese foreign ministry said on Friday. The move was a response to the Donald Trump administration’s order this week for Beijing to close its consulate in Houston. The analysts in China have termed the action as “an equivalent and reciprocal countermeasure", days after Washington abruptly ordered the closure of the Chinese consulate in Houston within 72 hours, a decision considered as a grave violation of international law and the basic norms governing international relations. "The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China informed the US Embassy in China of its decision to withdraw its consent for the establishment and operation of the US Consulate General in Chengdu," the Chinese foreign ministry said in a statement.

US will work with India, Japan and S Korea to tackle threat from China: Senator Warner Expressing grave concerns over Chinese surveillance on every aspect of the organisations doing business with Beijing, Warner said the US will work with countries like India, Japan, and South Korea to tackle the threat from China. HiIndia Newsdesk

HiIndia Newsdesk The backlog for an Indian national to get permanent residency or Green Card is more than 195 years, a top Republican senator has said, urging his Senate colleagues to come out with a legislative resolution to address this problem. A Green Card, known officially as a Permanent Resident Card, is a document issued to immigrants to the US as evidence that the bearer has been granted the privilege of residing permanently. Senator Mike Lee said on Wednesday that the current Green Card policy did nothing for the child of an immigrant whose dead parent’s Green Card application was ultimately denied because his or her job was no longer available. “Someone from India entering the backlog today would have to wait 195 years to receive an EB-3 green card. Even if we give their children this limbo status, none of them will have a prayer of becoming a US citizen,” Lee said on the Senator floor. In fiscal year 2019, Indian nationals received 9,008 category 1 (EB1), 2,908 category 2 (EB2), and 5,083 category 3 (EB3) Green Cards. EB1-3 are different categories of employmentbased Green Cards. Lee, the senator from Utah, was speaking on the legislation moved by Senator Dick Durbin that seeks to protect immigrant workers and their children who are stuck in the green card backlog.

The US will work with countries like India, Japan, and South Korea to tackle the threat of Chinese surveillance, a top American Senator, who has made a Congressional legislation to make New Delhi a strategic defence partner of Washington on a permanent basis has said. Democratic Senator Mark Warner, Chairman of Senate Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, in an interaction with members of the US India Security Council said China had emerged as a major problem for the US companies

doing businesses in that country and intellectual theft was a big concern. Warner, who is also co-chair of the Senate India Caucus, said he has sponsored an

White House drops payroll tax cut as GOP unveils virus aid HiIndia Newsdesk

HiIndia Newsdesk US President Donald Trump sees China as a threat, Republican leader and Indian American Nikki Haley has said, adding that she would campaign and work “very hard” to get him re-elected in the November elections. Addressing the virtual India Ideas Summit organized by US India Business Council, Haley said on Wednesday that the threat China poses to the US would be one of the factors in the November presidential elections. “I think that (security threat from China) will be one factor (in the elections). I think that you have president Trump who very much sees China as a threat,” Haley said in response to a question in the concluding session of the two-day India Ideas Summit, that among

others was addressed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. I think that you have (Democratic nominee) Joe Biden, who has said that China is not the problem and who was against the travel ban to China and who has not shown, in any of his time that he was in the Obama administration, as realizing the threat that China had. So, I think it will be one of the factors that’s going to be very important in this next election,” she said. Haley, who served as US Ambassador to the United Nations during the first two years of the Trump Administration.

The White House has dropped a bid to cut Social Security payroll taxes as Republicans unveil a USD 1 trillion COVID-19 rescue package on Thursday, ceding to opposition to the idea among top Senate allies. “It won’t be in the base bill,” said Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, speaking on CNBC about the payroll tax cut, killing the idea for now. The legislation, set to be released Thursday morning by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., comes amid alarming developments on the virus crisis. McConnell’s package is an opening GOP bid in talks with top Capitol Hill Democrats in a negotiation that could be rockier than talks in March that produced a USD 2 trillion rescue package.

Andhra leads as India inches towards 50,000 daily cases The infection numbers in Andhra Pradesh are currently growing at 9.7 per cent per day (7-day compounded daily growth rate), while Karnataka’s growth rate has come down to 6.68 per cent.

Andhra Pradesh, which is in a midst of a big surge, reported almost 8,000 new cases of novel Coronavirus on Thursday, pushing India within touching distance of 50,000-cases-a-day mark. A total of 49,310 new cases were added throughout the country on Thursday, with Odisha, which has been contributing over 1,000 cases for the last two days, yet to report its daily numbers. For the last few days now, India has been more Coronavirus patients than any other country in the world except the United States. Brazil’s daily numbers have fallen in the last week, while India has risen from the level of about 35,000 to almost 50,000 now. But Andhra Pradesh was not alone in pushing India to the 50,000-mark on Thursday. Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka also contributed in good measure. In the last one week, Maharashtra seems to have found a new level for its daily numbers. It has been consistently reporting figures above 8,000, thanks mainly to the surge in Pune, which right now is detecting over 3,000 cases every day, more than any other city in the country. On Thursday, the state had close to 10,000 new cases.

The Supreme Court on Thursday allowed the Rajasthan high court to pass orders tomorrow on a plea by rebel Congress leader Sachin Pilot and 18 other dissident MLAs challenging the speaker’s disqualification notice, setting aside speaker CP Joshi’s request for a stay on the proceedings. “Can a person elected by people not express his dissent?” Voice of dissent cannot be suppressed. In a democracy, can somebody be shut down like this?” Justice Arun Misha, heading the Supreme Court bench, asked Kapil Sibal, who is representing the speaker. The plea filed by Rajasthan speaker CP

Joshi challenged the state high court order of July 21 which had asked the speaker to defer action on his notice to Pilot and other rebel MLAs till July 24, arguing that the court’s intervention was premature as he is yet to decide on the issue of disqualification and has only issued notices. The Pilot camp filed a caveat petition in the court, saying nothing should be done without notifying them first. The group has argued that if a group of MLAs raises its voice against the style of the CM’s functioning it cannot be termed defection. It further argued that the party whip applies only when the assembly is in session and issuing such a notice is a violation of their freedom of expression.

China says UK citizenship pathway for Hong Kong residents violates international law Britain had made that decision despite opposition from Beijing and China would respond strongly if it was not reversed, the Chinese embassy said in a statement.

Face masks now compulsory in UK shops, supermarkets to check Covid-19 spread HiIndia Newsdesk Face coverings must b e wor n in shops, supermarkets, indoor shopping centres and transport hubs — such as train stations and airports — in England from Friday as part of the next stage of the UK government’s official guidance to curb the spread of coronavirus. Under the new regulations, members of the public will need to wear face coverings — such as a fabric covering, scarf or bandana — that cover the nose and mouth in additional enclosed public spaces, as announced by UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson earlier this month. It will be compulsory to wear a face covering when buying food and drink to takeaway from cafes and shops.

Prince Harry, Meghan Markle sue publication

HiIndia Newsdesk Prince Harry and Meghan Markle sued Thursday to stop the sale and publication of a photo of their son Archie that they say was shot at their Los Angeles-area home in invasion of their privacy. The royal couple gives a detailed account in the lawsuit of the media harassment they say they’ve had to constantly fight in the months since they moved to Southern California.

Thursday. British Interior Minister Priti Patel said on Wednesday that Hong Kong people with British National Overseas visas would be able to apply for citizenship starting from January 2021. Britain had made that decision despite opposition from Beijing and China would respond strongly if it was not reversed, the Chinese embassy said in a statement. The move “severely violated (Britain’s) own commitments, seriously interfered with the internal affairs of China and seriously violated international law and the basic norms of international relations,” it said. London’s decision, which could allow nearly three million Hong Kong residents to settle in Britain, came after Beijing imposed a national security law on the former British colony that democracy activists said would end the freedoms promised in 1997 when the territory was returned to Chinese rule. Britain says the law breaches the terms of the handover treaty agreed in 1984. China accuses Britain of interfering in Hong Kong and Chinese affairs. “The Chinese side urges the British side to recognise the reality that Hong Kong has returned to China, to look at the Hong Kong national security law objectively and immediately correct its mistakes,” the embassy said.

China launches first Mars probe

In this photo released by China's Xinhua News Agency, a Long March-5 rocket carrying the Tianwen-1 Mars probe lifts off from the Wenchang Space Launch Center in southern China's Hainan Province, Thursday, July 23, 2020. HiIndia Newsdesk China successfully launched an unmanned probe to Mars on Thursday in its first independent mission to another planet, in a display of its technological prowess and ambition to join an elite club of space-faring nations. China’s largest carrier rocket, the Long March 5 Y-4, blasted off with the probe at 12.41pm (0441 GMT) from Wenchang Space Launch Centre on the southern island of Hainan. In 2020, Mars is at its closest to Earth, at a distance of about 55 millionkm , in a window of about a month that opens once every 26 months. The probe is expected to reach Mars in February where it will try to land in Utopia Planitia, a plain in the northern hemisphere,

If successful, the Tianwen-1 will make it the first country to orbit, land and deploy a rover in its inaugural mission and deploy a rover to explore for 90 days. If successful, the Tianwen-1, or “Questions to Heaven”, the name of a poem written two millennia ago, will make China the first country to orbit, land and deploy a rover in its inaugural mission. Since 1960, half of all the 50-plus missions to Mars including flybys had failed. Challenges multiply for those attempting a landing, from ensuring a precise deceleration of the spacecraft to navigating the planet’s sometimes violent atmosphere.

UK to open citizenship path to Hong Kongers from January Britain’s government announced Wednesday that it will open a new special pathway to obtaining British citizenship for eligible Hong Kongers from January 2021. In a statement, the Home Office said holders of the British National Overseas passport and their immediate family members can move to the UK to work and study. The change to immigration rules was introduced after China imposed a new, sweeping national security law on Hong Kong. “The UK has a strong historic relationship with the people of Hong Kong and we are keeping our promise to them to uphold their freedoms,” Home Secretary Priti Patel said. Those who come to the UK through the new pathway will be able to apply to settle in Britain permanently once they have lived in the UK for five years. Then after a further 12 months, they can apply for British citizenship.

Taiwan says China sending planes near island almost daily

China is sending military planes near Taiwan with increasing frequency in what appears to be a stepping up of its threat to use force to take control of the island, Taiwan’s foreign minister said Wednesday. Such flights are more frequent than reported in the media and have become “virtually a daily occurrence,” Joseph Wu told reporters. Along with Chinese military exercises simulating an attack on Taiwan, the flights by China are causing major concern for Taiwan’s government, Wu said.

Is walking or running outside safe during coronavirus? Experts share advice about how social distancing impacts outdoor activities. Health and a professor of infectious diseases at the Yale School of Medicine. "Social distancing doesn't mean nature distancing. Go out, as long as you have distance." Both doctors emphasized the need to keep a six-foot distance between yourself and other runners to maintain appropriate

social distancing. "As long as you are keeping at least a sixfoot distance from the next person, running outside is particularly reasonable," said Omer. "I think it's healthy to do that." "We know that there is a radius where droplets settle on surfaces, and people touch them," he said. "That is the risk of transmission. Outdoors, when you're jogging and moving around, that's a different thing. You're not touching things ... For the sake of the community and your own loved ones, it's best to avoid places where you're touching things." "I think if it's a really crowded space, then definitely avoid it, but if you're just going to pass by people, I think people are being pretty wary about staying six feet apart right now," she said. "As long as it's not a very crowded space, I think it's OK to go out along your normal routes."

Is it safe to walk outside?

Walking outdoors is another great way to get some fresh air and some exercise - and it's just as safe as running, so long as you continue to take proper precautions. Standard rules like social distancing and bringing a mask still apply; if you're walking at a slower pace, it may help to just wear your mask, so you don't have to worry about taking it on and off. "Outside exercise it's a lower risk activity, assuming that you have distance between you and others," said Keri Althoff, Ph.D., an associate professor of epidemiology at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, Maryland. "Even when you're outside exercising you still don't want to get too close to people." "You don't want to see someone not exercise outdoors or exercise at all because being masked is providing discomfort," Althoff said. "That's the key part about exercising outside. Do it stay healthy. Keep your brain healthy with exercise as well."

Men should limit alcohol to 1 drink a day Meditation and yoga might aid Covid-19 treatment, says study

I

f you decide to have an alcoholic drink, limiting yourself to one a day is best — whether you’re a man or woman. That’s the new advice experts are recommending for the U.S. Dietary Guidelines for Americans, which are scheduled to be updated later this year for the first time in five years. The guidelines now say men should limit themselves to two drinks a day, and that women should limit themselves to one. That advice has been in place since 1990. In a report released Wednesday, a committee of experts noted there isn’t adequate evidence to support different alcohol recommendations for men and women, and that research supports tightening the limit for men. U.S. health agencies that issue dietary guidelines aren’t required to adopt the committee’s recommendations. The guidelines are based on the overall health of a population, and an individual’s risk from drinking could vary depending on a variety of factors and health habits, said Dr. Dariush Mozaffarian, a professor of nutrition at Tufts University. Other changes recommended by the committee include tightening the limit on added sugars to less than 6% of calories, down from the previous limit of 10%. Federal officials are expected to issue the updated guidelines by the end of the year, after considering public comments and input from other agencies.

recent study explores the healing benefits of yoga and meditation practices as potential adjunctive treatments of Covid-19 in peerreviewed journal JACM, The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine. Deepak Chopra, University of California, San Diego and William Bushell of Massachusetts Institute of Technology and co-authors from Harvard University and Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health describe the anti-inflammatory effects associated with meditation and yoga. The ‘brief overview of key subjects’ found “there is evidence of stress and inflammation modulation, and also preliminary evidence for possible forms of immune system enhancement, accompanying the practice of certain forms of meditation, yoga, and pranayama, along with potential implications for counteracting some forms of infectious challenges.” The authors also “readily acknowledge that in the context of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, the ideas put forth in this article must be put to further rigorous scientific investigation.” The paper is another in a series in JACM and in other integrative medicine journals suggesting that research agencies in the United States and Europe would serve their citizens by upping their exploration of the potential contributions of natural health practices, especially amidst the present dearth of conventional treatments,” said JACM Editor-in-Chief John Weeks.

The audience was waiting for fresh content on TV Helly Shah

The launch of Ishq Mein Marjawaan was postponed due to the lockdown. Was it disappointing for you?

Honestly no. I was excited back then and I think I am more excited now. It has been a long wait for us. Yes, we were to go on air pre-lockdown but decided not to as we did not know how the situation would pan out in the coming days. It was blessing in disguise for us as we are now all set to enthrall everyone. It is a very different show, with so much thrill. I am sure it would be quite a treat for the audience.

During the lockdown, a few shows got pulled off air. Didn’t that make you nervous? Not at all. We had shot for 10 episodes and the show was a promising one, so there was

no reason to be scared. However, I remember once a journalist called me and said that they heard that the show has been cancelled. I knew it wasn’t but that one moment did leave me in doubts. I spoke to the team who confirmed that nothing like that was happening. So I was quite relieved. I think we will always have a set of audience who dedicatedly watch television. I have many in my family, and the other day, my house help too asked me when shows would be back. Yes, during the lockdown, they started watching other things, and mythological shows also became a huge magnet but now they want to watch fresh content.

Chunky Panday to make his digital debut with Abhay 2 Actor Chunky Panday said ZEE5 web series Abhay 2 will showcase ruthless crime stories. Crime-thriller Abhay is all set to return with its next season on ZEE5. While Kunal Kemmu will return as investigative officer Abhay Pratap Singh, the streaming platform recently revealed Ram Kapoor as the negative lead. And now, on Friday, it introduced Chunky Panday as the next villain in the series. Panday, who is known for his comic roles, will don a never-seen-before avatar for Abhay 2. The actor took to Instagram to share the news. Posting an introductory video of his character, he wrote, “Milte hai 14 August ko Abhay Season 2 ke saath.” The promo begins with Kemmu’s character saying that every person has three sides – one that people around them can see, another that only comes to the fore in front of their close ones and the third which only they know about. The video gives a glimpse into Panday’s character, who seems to lead an ordinary life during the day, and turns into a wicked killer by night. His bespectacled, pot-bellied, simple look will remind you of Bob Biswas from Kahaani. Abhay 2 will mark Chunky Panday’s foray into the digital space. Talking about making his debut with the series, the actor, in a statement, said, “This was an exciting role for m. It is my digital debut too and I have never played anything like it. My character is a normal looking guy, but not when it comes to finding ways to feed his cannibal instinct.

John Boyega on returning to Star Wars John Boyega made his debut in the Star Wars franchise with 2015's The Force Awakens. His last outing in the series was The Rise of Skywalker (2019). Actor John Boyega, who played Finn in three Star Wars films, says he has “moved on” from the popular sci-fi fantasy series. The actor made his debut in the franchise with 2015’s The Force Awakens and followed it up two years later with The Last Jedi. The Rise of Skywalker in 2019 marked his last outing in the franchise. Boyega once again emphasised that he had no intentions of coming back to Star Wars after a fan expressed interest in seeing him return to the galaxy far, far, away. “Force Finn in action with Green lightsaber dressed in black is all I want from the next SW film!” wrote an admirer on one of the actor’s Instagram posts earlier this week.

Boyega, 28, replied, “Lol no thank you. I’ve moved on.” When another fan said he had “really just got those Disney bucks and dipped”, he responded, “Nope. Not into playing one role for too long. I have more to offer than that. That’s all.” Earlier this year, the actor said The Rise Of Skywalker was “very fulfilling (but had) some disappointments”. Boyega also appeared in the short film Rise Of The Resistance and voiced his character in TV series Forces Of Destiny and several video games.

Recently, actor Vidya Balan posted pictures of herself in a stunning Fuschia cotton outfit for the e-promotions of her upcoming movie Shakuntala Devi. The actor brought our Instagram feeds to life. Take a look at her outfit. Styled by Who Wore What When the actor went for a Urvashi Kaur creation. The plain cotton outfit featured an asymmetrical hemline along with dhotis. The look was brought together with pointy-toe stilettos in black and red. The dress had minimal detailing like kantha stitch near the neckline. Keeping her makeup supremely simple, she went for a touch of chocolate brown eye shadow with a hint of hot pink lip. Guess the price of Diljit Dosanjh’s printed shirt?

N

ot just belting out beautiful songs, Diljit Dosanjh has impressed us with his fun-filled cooking style during the lockdown, and also his quirky taste in fashion. We are talking about a multicoloured printed shirt that the Good Newwz actor recently posed in for a picture on Instagram. Did you notice the news channel emblems printed in bright colours all over the shirt? Dosanjh is seen wearing an offbeat news print shirt by Balenciaga, a luxury fashion house in Spain. If you are looking to add some vibrant attire to your muted wardrobe, this would be the perfect outfit for you. But the cost of the shirt is a lot more than you would expect. And after knowing it, you are likely to think twice before buying it. The Udta Punjab actor’s shirt costs USD 1070 (Rs 80,478) according to shopping site farfetch.com. And that is quite an expensive purchase!

Books to Help You Move Past Your Entrepreneurial Fears

The veteran actor revealed all, in conversation with film-maker Sangeeta Datta, at a virtual closed-door session for Ehsaas Women,

Life has brought us to a point where the here and now has become important. So what is the ‘now’ all about for you?

I am in Khandala, in our home Sukoon, which was made with great love about eight years ago by Javed (Akhtar, husband). It’s a gorgeous house, but we’ve never had an opportunity to spend any time here at all. After the lockdown, we came here, and two things have happened. First, this is the first time I have spent this amount of time with Javed in the 36 years of our marriage! (Laughs) Second, as Javed says, it’s a very strange situation, because what the lockdown has done is made us into a joint family from a nuclear family. I have my aunt visiting, my brother Baba and his family are close by, my friend is just within walking distance... so what we have formed is a sort of community. We were feeling a sort of suffocation in Mumbai... we are feeling much better here. The monsoons are on, it’s absolutely gorgeous and we are surrounded by trees. It’s very relaxing here. It’s quite surreal that in the middle of such a taxing time, we have sort of made a little island for ourselves, where only the ‘now’ matters. But, of course, one is cognisant of the fact that this is only a bubble and the pandemic is a catastrophe of the kind that most, especially those born after the Partition, haven’t seen and hopefully will never see. There’s a lot of upheaval and the disparity between the haves and the have-nots has become even more evident now. It’s leading me to a kind of introspection and making me re-evaluate many things... like the difference between want and need. Life can actually be lived very simply and I have been wrestling with the idea that less is more.

Even six months ago, when fireworks exploded over a giant, luminous set of Olympic rings in Tokyo Bay, organisers were still bullish that their huge financial investment would deliver an unforgettable Games.

hen Hima Das suffered a back injury last year, she drew inspiration from none other than the former India cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar during her recovery. After her injury in April 2019 suffered at the Asian Athletics Championships, there were fears that it would affect her chances of qualifying for the Tokyo Olympics. But, the postponement of the Games due to the COVID-19 pandemic injected hope into the 20-year-old as she is now preparing with the new cut-off date for 200m qualification of June 29, 2021, in her mind. “I am perfectly fit and practicing but then it is different from competitions. We need some of them to assess my fitness levels. Only after a few events will I know how far I have come,” Hima told. GoPro Hero 8

t’s that time of the year again. Fall brings us, along with decorative gourds, new GoPros. Other brands such as DJI have been threatening to eat GoPro’s lunch, recently, while the past couple of revisions of GoPro’s signature camera have largely been iterative. So with the new $400 Hero 8 Black, GoPro took some risks. Some of these risks pay off, while others make me a bit nervous. With the new lens on the Hero 8, GoPro elected to redesign its auto white balance and color tuning. This is especially evident in skin tones, the reds in dirt, the blues in the sky, and greens in leaves. Overall, the default GoPro color has a punchier, more dramatic look. Skin and dirt are both warmed significantly, while skies remain super vibrant. Detail is excellent overall. But at the same time, I think the contrast is pushed a bit high. Highlights are nearly blown out, while shadows are significantly darker than they were with the Hero 7. I think it generally has a nicely graded look, and footage looks more lively and cinematic, but I imagine most DPs will want to use the flat color profile to have more flexibility in post.

State Sen.Villivalam: Paycheck Protection Program Extended to Help Small Businesses BY A STAFF WRITER CHICAGO, IL – In light of the ongoing struggles faced by small businesses due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the federal government has once again extended the application deadline for the Paycheck Protection Program, and State Senator Ram Villivalam (D-Chicago) is encouraging struggling business owners to apply for a potentially forgivable loan. “While we are in the midst of reopening our state’s economy, there are still many local small business owners who are struggling to get by due to the pandemic,” Villivalam said. “Many business owners are worried about being able to support their families, pay their employees, and keep their doors open. Forgivable loans through the Paycheck Protection Program will allow them to keep their business running and ease the burden of the financial hardship they are facing.” Villivalam represents the 8th State Senate District, which is composed of likely the largest concentration of Jewish, Asian American, Irish American, Assyrian American, and other immigrant

populations in the state. He is proud to represent a district made up of a variety of constituents from diverse cultural backgrounds and believes it is what allows the communities he represents to succeed. “I’m proud to represent such a diverse district,” Villivalam said. “You can travel within a five-mile radius and be able to find restaurants that serve warm rotis and dosas, hot matzo ball soup, fresh perogies and crispy fried chicken. Our district continues to thrive due to this diversity. I urge you when you are grabbing dinner this week, picking up groceries or looking

for the latest fashion, that you take the time to shop locally and support our local businesses during this unprecedented time.” The Federal Treasury Department and the U.S. Small Business Administration extended the application deadline for the Paycheck Protection Program to assist struggling business owners. Businesses can get up to $10 million in financial relief on a first come, first served basis. Under the extended deadline, businesses can apply until August 8. If used as intended, the loans will not have to be repaid. More than 27,000 Illinois businesses have already taken advantage of the loans. According to the Small Business Administration, these loans have saved an estimated 1.36 million jobs. The interest rate on PPP loans stands at 1% and will be forgiven in full if used toward payroll costs, rent, utilities, or interest on mortgages. To find participating lenders, business owners and managers should visit the Small Business Administration’s website, HERE<https:// www.sba.gov/document?program=PPP

Indian American Florida Police Officer Is Fired After Pointing Gun at Unarmed Black Man BY A STAFF WRITER TAMPA, FL - An Indian American Hillsborough County Sheriff ’s Office sergeant in Tampa, Florida, has been fired and charged with a felony for aiming his handgun near a handcuffed black man’s head and threatening to kill him. Sgt. Janak Amin, a 21-year veteran with the sheriff ’s office, escalated to pulling out his gun when the handcuffed man refused to give him his name, according to Sheriff Chad Chronister. Amin was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon July 10 for threatening the life of the unarmed black man on July 9, Chronister said at a July 10 news conference. Chronister called Amin’s behavior “despicable,” saying the man under arrest was not being aggressive with officers in any way. He was only quiet — apparently enraging Amin, Chronister said at the news conference, according to the report. “I assure you, he wasn’t being uncooperative,” the sheriff said of the victim, whom the sheriff declined to identify. “The bottom line is there is no reason, no rationale or justification why anyone had to point a gun at his head and threaten his life simply because he refused to identify himself.” Amin’s attorney, Paul Sisco, told that Amin followed proper protocols during the arrest and that other witnesses will contradict the allegations Sheriff Chronister outlined at the news conference last week. The victim was under arrest in the first place because employees at the Hillsborough County Jail had accidentally

released him. Chronister said the man had been “inadvertently” transferred to DACCO Behavioral Health, a treatment facility in Tampa for those with substance-abuse or mental-health issues, where he was not supposed to be, the publication said. He then left the facility. Once the sheriff ’s office realized the mistake, they went looking for him. They found him hiding behind a trailer, Chronister said in the report. When officers confronted the man and put him in a “prone position” — lying flat on his stomach on the ground — the handcuffed man would not give his name, Chronister said, according to the report. So Amin knelt down next to him. He

drew his firearm and pointed it inches from the man’s head, the sheriff added. Then, he told the man that if he refused to give his name, he would “splatter his brains all over the concrete.” The victim said in a statement later that he didn’t give his name because he was “scared to death,” Chronister added in the report. He said they were following recent training requiring them to intervene when they witness excessive force by colleagues, according to the report. That policy has been newly implemented at police departments across the country in the aftermath of George Floyd’s killing in Minneapolis on May 25, the report added.

BY A STAFF WRITER NEW YORK, NEW YORK, NY — The popular pandemic Open Restaurants program will last until trick-or-treaters hit the streets. Mayor Bill de Blasio on Friday announced the program will be extended until Oct. 31, giving 8,600 New York City restaurants — and counting — a chance to serve food and drink through every last bit of good weather. “The Open Restaurants program has worked,” he said. “It has brought back jobs, it has been safe and therefore will extend this initiative. The restaurants will be able to use sidewalks and will be able to use the curbs through September, through October.” The extension will be paired with 40 more blocks of pedestrian- and bicycle-only Open Streets that will open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays for dining, de Blasio said. Those include locations in Chinatown, Fifth Avenue in Park Slope and Forest Hills, according to a release. Both programs arose as ways to give New Yorkers space to walk, bike and dine safely during the coronavirus pandemic.

FDA Proposes New Rule on Reporting Requirements FDA NEWS RELEASE WASHINGTON, DC - Today, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration published the proposed rule, Annual Summary Reporting Requirements Under the Right to Try Act, that when finalized, will implement a statutory requirement for sponsors and manufacturers to provide an annual summary to the FDA for any eligible investigational drug they provide to eligible patients under the Right to Try Act. “The FDA is dedicated to achieving the goals that Congress set forth in the Right to Try Act, so that patients facing terminal conditions have another avenue to access investigational medicines,” said Anand Shah, M.D., Deputy Commissioner for Medical and Scientific Affairs. “Today’s proposed rule builds on the FDA’s long-standing dedication to enhancing access for patients who are facing life-threatening diseases or conditions and our continued commitment to transparency.” The Right to Try Act, or the Trickett Wendler, Frank Mongiello, Jordan McLinn and Matthew Bellina Right to Try Act of 2017, provides a pathway for patients who have been diagnosed with life-threatening diseases or conditions who have tried all approved treatment options and who are unable to participate in a clinical trial, to access certain

unapproved treatments. Ultimately, the sponsor or manufacturer who is developing the drug or biologic, not the FDA, is responsible for determining whether to make their product available to patients who qualify for access under the Right to Try Act. The FDA, an agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services,

protects the public health by assuring the safety, effectiveness, and security of human and veterinary drugs, vaccines and other biological products for human use, and medical devices. The agency also is responsible for the safety and security of our nation’s food supply, cosmetics, dietary supplements, products that give off electronic radiation, and for regulating tobacco products.

University of Illinois Awarded Fulbright Grants to Two Indian American Graduates BY A STAFF WRITER CHICAGO IL- Rina Ravisundar and Aboorva Sivasankaran are among six recent alumni from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign College of Liberal Arts & Sciences who were offered Fulbright grants to pursue international education, research, and teaching experiences across the globe this coming year, according to a press release. The goal of the Fulbright U.S. Student Program is to build international relationships to help solve global challenges. This flagship international educational exchange program of the U.S. government awards grants to students based on their academic and professional achievement as well as their demonstrated leadership potential. Ravisundar, of Willowbrook, Illinois, and a graduate of Hinsdale Central High School, was offered an English teaching assistant position in India. The Indian American graduated cum laude from Illinois in December as a James Scholar honors student with a bachelor’s degree in political science. She served as a teaching assistant

Ravisundar also worked as a research assistant studying gender violence and substance misuse, applying that research as a legal case worker at the Parliament of the United Kingdom, noted the release. In addition, she tutored refugee children

in English and math through the organization Refugee Tutoring. Ravisundar is currently employed by Fragomen LLP as a paralegal and said she hopes to begin law school and pursue a career in family law. Sivasankaran, of Huntley, Illinois, and a graduate of Huntley High School, was offered an English teaching assistant position in South Korea. Sivasankaran graduated from Illinois in 2019 as a James Scholar honors student with a bachelor’s degree in psychology. She currently resides in Atlanta. On campus, Sivasankaran served as a lead peer adviser in the Division of General Studies and as an English native speaker volunteer with English Corner. She also worked to destigmatize mental illness as a member of the National Alliance on Mental Illness. The Indian American served as an event coordinator of KConnect, a social organization for fans of Korean pop culture, and regularly participated in Korean conversation tables. Sivasankaran said she plans to attend graduate school in family counseling upon her return from her Fulbright year.

CBP NEWS RELEASE ST. ALBANS, VT – As a result of restrictions on non-essential travel along the northern border, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) will temporarily reduce the hours of operation at the Alburg Springs and Rt. 5-Derby Line ports of entry along the Vermont/Quebec border effective immediately. Alburg Springs will now operate daily from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. Eastern. Rt. 5-Derby Line will now operate daily from 8 a.m. - 8 p.m. Eastern. CBP adjusted the hours of operation at the ports to better align services and resources during the COVID-19 travel restrictions along land borders. The determination of new hours was made following a review of traffic and operations, and was made in coordination with the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA). These reductions of hours will remain in place until the Administration lifts the current travel restrictions. CBP will return to previous hours once the COVID-19 emergency has subsided. The nearby Derby Line/I-91 port of entry and Alburg port of entry will continue to operate 24 hours a day, seven days per week. Travelers considered essential should adjust their travel according to the new hours of operation. Visit https://www.cbp.gov/contact/ ports/vt to view the hours of operations at all Vermont ports of entry.

Gov. Cuomo Directed Blunt Message to NYC Partiers Crowding Together BY A STAFF WRITER NEW YORK, NY— Gov. Andrew Cuomo directed a blunt message to New York City partiers seen crowding together: knock it off or else. “If it happens, we’re going to have to roll back the opening plan,” Cuomo said Monday. Cuomo’s threat to roll back New York City’s long-awaited reopening followed a weekend of rowdy party scenes in Astoria and the Lower East Side. Those congregations form one of two threats to New York’s now-low coronavirus numbers, he said. The other comes from increasing COVID-19 infection rates in 40 other states, he said. New York instituted a mandatory quarantine for travelers from coronavirus hot spots, but Cuomo said it’s all but certain infected people from elsewhere will add to the state’s 1 percent infection rate.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo “It’s virtually impossible to enforce with total certainty,” he said. But homegrown coronavirus spreaders in the form of booze-swilling New York City carousers — and the bars, restaurants and

local officials who enable them — received the brunt of Cuomo’s ire. He has long warned about congregations, mostly of young people, in New York City’s parks and eateries forming potential coronavirus breeding grounds. Young people too often think they’re invincible superheroes, he said. They need to be aware that not only can they catch the virus, but they can also spread it, he said. “Take it from a person who’s lived a lot of life — don’t be stupid,” Cuomo said. Cuomo last week instituted a “three strikes” rule against bars and restaurants found violating social guidelines. He urged “local government” and police to enforce compliance — a potentially fraught prospect in New York City after a NYPD crackdown on social distancing overwhelmingly targeted people of color. Enforcing the law could be “politically unpopular” for local governments, Cuomo said.

“That’s going to be more politically difficult than telling the NYPD to do their job,” he said. “We have to protect the progress we have made,” he said. Mayor Bill de Blasio also addressed the late night pandemic party problem. He pledged to crack down on reveling restaurants, particularly along Astoria’s Steinway Street, where scenes of less-thansocially-distant merriment have gone viral. Police stepped up patrols, handed out tickets and worked to disperse crowds along the thoroughfare, de Blasio said. At least one restaurant got kicked out of the city’s outdoor dining program. “If they do not cooperate in our efforts to contain the coronavirus, they will be shut down,” de Blasio said during a Monday news briefing. “When we agreed to let this part of our life come back, it was not meant to be business as usual.”
