Bills blocking arms sales to Saudi vetoed

Congressional resolutions would ‘weaken global competitiveness’ and damage America’s ‘important relationships’ with its allies, says Trump IANS, WASHINGTON

U

S President Donald Trump has vetoed three congressional resolutions seeking to block the White House from selling weapons to Saudi Arabia and other countries without the legislative branch’s prior approval. Trump said that the congressional resolutions would “weaken America’s global competitiveness” and damage its “important relationships” with its allies and partners. His move came on Wednesday after both chambers of Congress voted to prevent the sale. The President announced he was returning the bipartisan bills that would have blocked licensing for certain arms sales in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the UK, France, Spain and Italy, as these European countries also sell arms to Riyadh, the US media reported. “Apart from negatively affecting

US President Donald Trump.

our bilateral relationships with Saudi Arabia, the UK, Spain, and Italy, the resolutions would hamper the ability of the US to sustain and shape critical security cooperation activities,” he said in one of his messages to the Senate. He called each resolution “illconceived” and said it failed to address root causes of conflict in

Yemen. The Senate would hold a vote within days on whether to override Trump’s veto, Republican Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said on Wednesday. But analysts said it was almost certain that the Senate will not have the necessary two-thirds majority to do so. It is the third time Trump has used his veto power since taking office.

In particular, Congress intended to stop an arms sale worth $8.1 billion to Saudi Arabia and the UAE that was announced in May and backed by a national emergency declaration with which the Trump administration tried to circumvent legislative control. The sales’ main objective is to replenish the Saudis’ weapons arsenal, which has been depleted due to the Middle Eastern kingdom’s war in Yemen. The lawmakers alleged that Saudi Arabia used US weapons against civilians in Yemen and cited Riyadh’s involvement in the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in October. The White House said “Saudi Arabia is a bulwark against the malign activities of Iran and its proxies in the region”. Trump also said that these measures (by Congress) would “degrade” the military preparedness of Saudi Arabia and the UAE “to protect its sovereignty, directly affecting its ability to defend US military personnel hosted there”.

US judge blocks Trump’s new asylum restrictions WASHINGTON: A federal judge in the US has temporarily blocked asylum restrictions passed last week by President Donald Trump seeking to keep most Central American applicants out of the country. The San Francisco court’s injunction on Wednesday overruled an earlier decision by a lower court on the same day that validated Trump’s measure, in what happened to be a short-lived victory for the American leader. With this new ruling, US District Judge Jon Tigar of the Northern District of California compelled the US government to continue to accept asylum requests from all applicants arriving at the border, according to Efe news. The measure promoted by Trump last week restricted the possibility of seeking asylum at the US’ southern border for immigrants who had passed through other countries, where they would now be required to apply for refuge. As most asylum-seekers are from El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala, they generally pass through Guatemala and Mexico on their way to the US. The move virtually ended the possibility for these migrants to apply for asylum in the US. —IANS

Mueller’s testimonies neither helped Trump nor his foes ARUL LOUIS, NEW YORK

A

day of Congressional testimony by Robert Mueller, who investigated Russian interference in the 2016 elections, has turned out to be a cathartic political theater rather than a definitive actionable conclusion that both Democrats and the Republicans had desperately wanted. The former special counsel, who had spent nearly two years probing allegations that US President Donald Trump colluded with Russia and obstructed investigations, did not advance the findings in his April report or tie up the loose ends during about seven hours of testimony on Wednesday. Trying to stay above the partisan fray, he neither made the strong case for impeachment that the Democrats wanted nor granted the complete exoneration of Trump that the Republicans sought. “The report is my testimony,” Mueller said, refusing to yield to

Mueller testimony ‘disaster’ for Democrats: Trump WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has said that Republicans have had “a very good day” with the appearance of former Special Counsel Robert Mueller before Congress to testify on the Russia probe, adding that the hearings proved to be a “disaster” for Democrats. “We had a very good day today,” Efe news quoted Trump as saying to reporters at the White House, lambasting yet again Mueller’s independent two-year investigation into Russian election meddling and call-

either side for the most part, with “I can’t speak to that” being a frequent refrain in separate testimonies before the House of Representatives Judiciary and Intelli-

ing it a “witch hunt.” “There was no defense to this ridiculous hoax,” Trump said, adding “So this was a very big day for our country. This was a very big day for the Republican Party. And you could say it was a great day for me.” “He had a lot of problems,” Trump said of Mueller’s testimony. “But what he showed more than anything else is that this whole thing has been three years of embarrassment and waste of time for our country.” “This has been a disaster for the Democrats,” he stated. —IANS

strong manifestation -- in fact, some would even say indictment -of this administration’s cone of silence and their cover-up,” Pelosi said at a news conference. Without a blockbuster revelation from Mueller, she ruled out, for now, an impeachment of Trump on charges of obstructing justice by interfering with the probe or alleged collusion with Russia. “My position has always been whatever decision we made in that regard would have to be done with our strongest possible hand, and we still have some outstanding matters in the courts,” she said. Eighty-nine of the 235 Democ-

ratic representatives support impeachment and Pelosi faces pressure from the progressive wing of her party to proceed with it. She fears that an impeachment would be a futile distraction in an election year because while the Democratic-controlled House can impeach Trump, ultimately the Republican-majority Senate will have to accept it and vote to remove him from office - an unlikely scenario. Pelosi favors multi-pronged investigations of Trump, his family and his associates by the Congressional committees and court cases to build the case against him.

mid an uproar over US President Donald Trump’s claim that Prime Minister Narendra Modi asked him to mediate on the Kashmir issue between India and Pakistan at the G-20 summit in Osaka, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on July 23 categorically rejected Trump’s statement and clarified in both the Houses of Parliament that “no such request was ever made”. The matter was raised in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha when the Houses assembled for the day. The opposition demanded a clarification from the Prime Minister but the government chose minister Jaishankar to reply. This led to an uproar in both the Houses — the Rajya Sabha faced an adjourn-

LONDON: A British court on July 25 extended till August 22 the judicial custody of Nirav Modi in connection with the Rs 13,500 crore Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud case. The Westminster Magistrates Court ordered the Metropolitan Police to place him in its custody till the next hearing on August 22. The 48-year-old businessman, wanted in India, was arrested from Holborn here on March 19. Since then he has been fighting extradition proceedings. Modi and his uncle Mehul Choksi are being investigated by the Enforcement Directorate and the Central Bureau of Investigation after the PNB alleged that they cheated it of Rs 13,500 crore with the involvement of some bank employees. Modi also faces charges under the Fugitive Economic Offenders Act. The ED has filed a chargesheet against Choksi in a Prevention of Money Laundering Act Court in Mumbai. ment first in the Rajya Sabha and then in the Lok Sabha where the matter was allowed to be raised by Speaker Om Birla after Question Hour. Offering to be a “mediator” between India and Pakistan on the Kashmir issue, the US President had, in a meeting with Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan on Monday, asked him if he would agree to the proposal. The Congress and the Communist Party of India (CPI) demanded an explanation from the Prime Minister on the issue in the Upper House. “The entire country was shocked last night to hear US President Donald Trump tell Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan that, at the G20 Summit held recently in Osaka, the Prime Minister of India had requested him to mediate on Kashmir,” said Congress leader Anand Sharma.

xternal Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on July 22 said the Indian embassy in Tehran is in “constant contact” with the Iranian authorities for the release and repatriation of 18 Indian crew members on board oil tanker Stena Impero that was seized by Iranian revolutionary guards. In a tweet, responding to concerns raised by Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Jaishankar said that the MEA is working for

the release of the Indian sailors. “TeamMEA is already working on the early release & repatriation of all 18 Indian crew members of Stena Impero. Our Embassy in Tehran is in constant contact with Iranian authorities to resolve this. We will keep you posted on further developments,” he said. wo BJP MLAs on July 24 cross-voted in favor of the ruling Congress to help pass a Bill on prevention of mob lynching in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly. The House was adjourned sine die after the bill was passed. Embarrassed Leader of Opposition, Gopal Bhargava said he will discuss the issue later. Wednesday’s developments bring to an end the speculation over the survival of Kamal Nath government, especially in the wake of developments in Karnataka. The two BJP legislators — Sharad Kol of Beohari and

Madhya Pradesh CM Kamal Nath

Narayan Tripathi of Maihar — are reportedly joining the Congress. Tripathi, who has been elected from Maihar several times, is a known party-hopper and has been

in the Samajwadi Party and the Congress earlier. Kol of Shahdol has also been in the Congress earlier. A triumphant Congress later expressed hope there will more

arrivals from the BJP. “Some more BJP MLAs are in touch with (Chief Minister) Kamal Nath. Let us wait and watch,” said a party leader. Kamal Nath had earlier challenged the Opposition to try and buy out the ruling party legislators in this state. Responding to Bhargava’s boast: “We can bring down the government the moment the No 1 and 2 leaders give a go ahead”, he retorted: “Your No 1 and 2 have the wisdom not to give you the go ahead.” “Everyone knows about the skills of your No 1 and No 2. Our government will complete five years. If you are so sure, why don’t you bring a no-confidence motion right away?”

Trump’s mediation

ARUL LOUIS, NEW YORK

A

credibility-challenged US President Donald Trump has muddled the carefully built relations with India by his dubious claim that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had sought his mediation with Pakistan to find a solution to the Kashmir problem - an assertion that was immediately trashed by New Delhi. Speaking to reporters before his meeting with Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan, Trump dropped the stunner: “I was with Prime Minister Modi two weeks ago, and we talked about this subject. And he actually said, ‘Would you like to be a mediator or arbitrator?’ I said, ‘Where?’ He said, ‘Kashmir’”. India’s External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Raveesh Kumar rejected Trump’s claim, saying, “No such request has been made by Prime Minister to the US President. It has been India’s consistent position that all outstanding issues with Pakistan are discussed only bilaterally”. Trump’s mercurial personality is sometimes a loose cannon in politics and diplomacy changing policies on a whim and making dubious claims to boost his outsize ego. And this was one such moment. Wells, moved quickly to douse the controversy. She tweeted, “While Kashmir is a bilateral issue for both parties to discuss, the Trump administration welcomes Pakistan and India sitting down and the United States stands ready to assist.” Congressional leaders from the Democratic and Republican Parties also repudiated Trump’s claim to be mediator and reaffirmed the US position that Kashmir was bilateral issued between the neighbors. Trump’s own foreign policy advisers like National Security Adviser John Bolton and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo see India in the larger geopolitical strategic environment in dealing with China and helping the US across

continents and oceans. And they know enough about India to not make such claims. Wells surely had Pompeo’s approval to make a statement that goes against the president’s public pronouncement. At the beginning of their media encounter, Trump said the US could “intercede” with India in settling disputes with Pakistan. But later it became mediating on Kashmir and then arbitrating. For Trump there is an important short-term political objective in appeasing Khan - arriving at some kind of a settlement with the Taliban in Afghanistan so he can bring the US troops back home. Trump acknowledged that Pakistanis “have a power that other

WASHINGTON: After the diplomatic brouhaha over President Donald Trump’s off-the-cuff remarks on Kashmir, the US was careful not to mention the ‘K’ word during a subsequent meeting between US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and visiting Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan. Pompeo stressed that the US looked forward to “continued progress from Pakistan on shared security priorities, including defeating terrorist organizations, which he hoped would form the basis of a reinvigorated partnership”.

nations don’t have with respect to Afghanistan”. This is all the more important for Trump with the presidential elections around the corner as he has failed to make a deal with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un, whom he had feted in a similar manner, and most of his election promises unfulfilled. “We’re working with Pakistan on getting a solution”, he said, adding, “We’ve made a lot of progress over the last couple of weeks, and Pakistan has helped us with that progress”. Pak terrorists fought in Kashmir: Imran ARUL LOUIS, NEW YORK

P

akistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has acknowledged that some terrorists in Pakistan had fought in Kashmir while asserting that he had the army’s support for disarming them and for overtures to India. Speaking at the US Institute of Peace in Washington on Tuesday, he tried to make the case that the army and the security forces were not patronizing the terrorist groups and backed the crackdown, while letting slip about their role in

Kashmir. He also admitted that the Pakistan-based terror group Jaishe-Mohammed was operating in India. He said that because some of the terrorists were trained and had experience of fighting in Kashmir the police can’t handle them and the army’s help is required. Khan said: “It was said normally that the security forces patronized the groups. We would not be disarming if the security forces were not standing behind us. You cannot disarm because the police is incapable of disarming these

groups. They are trained, these people have experience of fighting in Afghanistan, some in Kashmir. The police cannot go after them, so it is the army that is helping us disarm all militant groups in our

country.” In a country where the military has ruled directly or from behind the scenes ensuring its hardline policies were followed and toppling elected governments there is

e emphasized on the “continued importance of the US and Pakistan working together to advance shared priorities, including Pakistan’s significant role in supporting the Afghan peace process and counter-terrorism”. Pompeo welcomed the occasion to discuss opportunities for enhanced cooperation, including expanded trade and investment opportunities, said a readout by spokesperson Morgan Ortagus. The Trump administration is banking heavily on Pakistan to resolve the Afghan issue and had invited Islamabad for talks with the Taliban.

him to be the “arbitrator” in the dispute exposes the hollowness of his claim. Kashmir has become a touchstone of India’s national integrity and after an ill-conceived initial appeal to the United Nations, New Delhi has carefully kept outsiders from even mediating, refusing many well-intentioned offers. Arbitrating that gives the right to judge and make awards is so well beyond mediating that it is inconceivable Modi or any Indian leader would even think of giving anyone that authority. skepticism about how far a civilian government can set the agenda. Khan tried to dispel this notion where his elected civilian government was concerned, even in regard to India, and assert that he had the military’s backing. But he stopped short of claiming that the military establishment was under civilian control as it should be in a democracy. Khan tried to brush off the role of Pakistan-based terror groups in the Pulwama incident claiming that it was an indigenous attack by a “Kashmiri boy radicalized by the brutality of the security forces”. Khan admitted that whenever there was progress in improving ties between India and Pakistan it was met by some incident that caused a reversal. But he did not say who was behind the incidents that setback peace.

UK PM Boris Johnson has close Indian link However, Johnson is known to have made several gaffes, including some related to India IANS, NEW DELHI/LONDON

S

et to be the new British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson has a close India connection. His estranged wife Marina Wheeler, whom he married in 1993, is half Indian. Wheeler is the niece of late editor and writer Khushwant Singh. Before they announced their separation last year after 25 years of marriage, Johnson had travelled several times to India with Marina. They have four children together. Johnson, who won the race within the Conservative Party to

become the country’s next Prime Minister, is expected to rely on his declared personal connect with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to deliver a “truly special” UK-India relationship. In his letter to the Indian diaspora Tory membership base, Johnson wrote that, during his meeting with Modi, he had stressed upon how India and UK were modern democracies and should work together to promote trade and prosperity. Johnson told Modi that the two nations should work closely to tackle the challenges that their countries face.

The former Mayor of London and former Foreign Secretary, 55, has earlier referred to himself as the son-in-law of India. Marina’s mother, Dip Singh, who is still alive, was married to Khushwant Singh’s youngest brother, Daljit Singh. In a column for The Tribune, veteran journalist and Khuswant Singh’s son Rahul Singh writes that Johnson visited the Ranthambore tiger reserve along with Marina and three of their children last year. During a family get-together, Rahul Singh got to meet Johnson. “Though I had met him once

before in Mumbai some years earlier, this was the first time I got a chance to talk to him one-to-one, at some length. I was surprised that he knew so much about India and its politics. Should he become Britain’s next PM, I think those Indian insights, thanks mainly due

to his 25-years of marriage to Marina, however rocky it may have been, and personal visits to this country, should augur well for better Indo-British ties.” However, Johnson is known to have made several gaffes, including some related to India.

DUBAI: Indian comedian Manjunath Naidu died on stage while performing a stand-up act in Dubai. The performer, originally from Chennai, passed away from a reported cardiac arrest on July 19 at the Signature Hotel. “I was sitting in the front row at the show and Manjunath was the last performer of the night,” PR manager Sana Topiwala told the Gulf News. “The show kicked off around 9.30 p.m. and Manjunath came on around 11.20 p.m.” According to Topiwala, 15 minutes into his act, Naidu started complaining about growing anxiety. “He suddenly started to pant and sat down on the bench to catch his breath,” Topiwala continued. “Few minutes in, he suddenly collapsed and fell to the ground in front of an audience of 80 people.” According to the eye witness,

everyone assumed this was part of the act. However, after three minutes of no movement some of the comics and hotel staff members rushed on stage to administer CPR.

Naidu, 36, was well respected comedian on the UAE circuit, having performed stand-up for 5 years “We called the paramedics and followed him to Al Zahra Hospital Barsha. They attempted CPR, injected him with adrenaline but it was too late. We were informed he died of a cardiac arrest,” she added. ohammad Aftab Alam, the father of a 15-yearold missing Indian boy in Sharjah, on Thursday offered a reward of 5,000 dirhams to anyone who finds his son. Mohammed Pervez has been missing from his home in Sharjah’s Muweilah area since July 4. It is believed that the boy got upset with his mother who stopped him from watching a show on YouTube and snatched his smartphone, Gulf News reported. “I would just like to see him come home safe. We have been praying all day since he’s disappeared,” Alam told Gulf News. “We will give 5,000 dirhams to anyone who produces any kind of

information about my son. anything, I just want him back.” On Thursday, Alam traveled with Sharjah police authorities to Kalba, Fujairah, in search of his son. They were accompanied by child protection officials. The police said they will not intervene in any efforts made by the family to find their son.

“A three-member team of the child protection team took me to Kalba where my brother Mohammad Firoze Alam lives. We were hoping to find some clues there,” Alam said. Several leads have been chased since Pervez went missing but none has panned out so far, the report said. As per reports, the Grade IX student got upset and went missing after his mother chided him for watching a historical Hindi drama on YouTube and snatched his smartphone. The boy’s father said Pervez had just 8 dirhams with him. “How long can it possibly last? At first we thought he’d come back in the afternoon but when he didn’t show up until late evening we got worried and alerted the police.

Sherin Mathews death: Demand for new trial IANS, WASHINGTON

W

esley Mathews, the Indian-American father who was sentenced to life in prison over the killing of his threeyear-old adopted daughter Sherin Mathews in the US state of Texas, has requested a new trial. The man was sentenced on June 26 over his daughter’s death in October 2017 after pleading guilty to a lesser charge of injury to a child by omission. He was also accused of hiding his daughter’s body in a ditch

in Richardson under a road about one kilometre from their home in suburban Dallas. Authorities had originally charged him for capital murder. However, in a court motion filed this week, attorneys for Wesley Mathews, 39, requested a new trial, arguing that evidence presented against him was “prejudicial”, the Dallas Morning News reported. Mathews’ attorneys argue that he deserves a new trial in part because prosecutors showed the jury a photo of Sherin Mathews’s

decomposed body. “The picture was prejudicial and prevented Mathews from getting a fair trial”, the man’s lawyers say. “Jurors expressed visible emotion when shown the exhibits,” said Brook A. Busbee, one of Wesley Mathews’ attorneys.

oris Johnson, who took over as Britain’s 77th Prime Minister on July 24, said he wants to “change the country for the better” and that the “work begins now”. Johnson, who succeeds Theresa May, said the country would definitely leave the European Union on October 31. “No ifs, no buts... The buck stops with me,” he said, in his first speech as PM outside 10, Downing Street. “The doubters, the doomsters, the gloomsters” who say Brexit cannot be done are “wrong”, he added, reported the BBC. Setting out his priorities, Johnson hit out at the “pessimists” who do not believe Brexit can be delivered. In what is seen as an indirect attack at his predecessor, he called for an end to the “three years of unfounded self doubt” and “indecision”. “The time has come to act, to take decisions and change this country for the better,” said Johnson, who was Foreign Secretary in May’s cabinet, before quitting last year. “Let’s get going no... China ‘can deploy military in HK’ IANS, BEIJING

C

hina on July 24 said it can deploy military to Hong Kong at the request of the city’s government to maintain law and order after weeks of pro-democracy protests. Chinese Defense Ministry’s spokesman Wu Qian said that the vandalism of the central government liaison office in Hong Kong — after weeks of mass protests against the city’s extradition bill — was a challenge to the bottom line of the principle of “one country, two systems”, the South China Morning Post reported. “Article 14 of the Garrison Law has clear stipulations,” the Ministry’s spokesperson Wu Qian said at a press conference in response to a question by reporters on whether Chinese armed forces would intervene in the special administrative region. According to provisions of the article, the Hong Kong government may seek help from the central government for “maintenance of public order and in disaster relief”. “We are closely following the developments in Hong Kong, especially the violent attack against the

central government liaison office by radicals on July 21,” Wu said, referring to an incident on July 21 when demonstrators vandalized the office by throwing paint on the national emblem and using spray paint on the boundary walls of the premises. “Some behavior of the radical protesters is challenging the authority of the central government and the bottom line of one country, two systems. This is intolerable.” Over the past seven weeks, Hong Kong has been the scene of demonstrations that began as

protests against a contentious extradition bill that, according to lawyers and human rights activists, would allow the extradition to mainland China of fugitives accused of certain crimes. The bill’s opponents said that the new law could mean that local activists, critical journalists and dissidents in Hong Kong could be sent to mainland China for trial. Its defenders, meanwhile, claimed that it merely sought to fill a legal vacuum, as no formal extradition treaties exist between Hong Kong, Taiwan and mainland China.

EntErtainmEnt ENTERTAINMENT ‘Casting directors play big part today’

Madhavan declined fan’s proposal

Priyanka Chopra returns from social media break A

A

ctor-producer Priyanka Chopra Jonas has been taking a “bit of a break from technology”, but she is back in the digital world. The actress took to Instagram to share why she has been absent from social media for some time. She also expressed gratitude to her fans and her followers for sending love and good wishes on her birthday. “Hi everyone! Thank you so much for all the wonderful birthday messages and wishes... You have made my day extremely special,” said the actress, who has over 43 million Instagram followers. “Sorry I haven’t responded earlier, was taking a bit of a break from technology, but now I’m back and I just want to say ‘Thank you all so much’, she said.

V

eteran actress Shabana Azmi feels that casting directors are playing a huge part in today’s filmmaking process. “I feel Indian cinema is going through a phase of change because people are realizing that content is king. Filmmakers are giving a lot of attention towards writing,” said Azmi, talking about growth of Indian cinema in recent times at an event along with husband Javed Akhtar. “I feel happy about the fact that the level of acting has scaled a different level because people are understanding the importance of casting directors,” she said. Even if an actor has to deliver only two lines in a film, casting directors are making sure that the actors look believable onscreen. Earlier that never used to happen.

Jacqueline launches her YouTube channel

A

ctress Jacqueline Fernandez has launched her YouTube channel, to take forward her bond with fans. Jacqueline, who is quite active in the digital world, went live on her Instagram handle on Tuesday to launch the channel. The first video that the actress uploaded gives glimpses of her childhood, her family, her first rampwalk, her first audition, and the moment she was crowned Miss Sri Lanka. “Looking back, I think I always had a special relationship with the camera. I feel I have always been camera-friendly—a happy little kid. I have two people to thank for that —my dad and my mom,” she said in the video.

Alia Bhatt enjoys family time in Ooty

ctor R. Madhavan was humbled when he got a marriage proposal from an 18-year-old fan, which the married star naturally declined. It all started when the actor posted a selfie on Instagram after an exhausting day. “Editing is so much fun and exhausting: Enjoying and fearing it. End of long travel day. Definitely getting older,” he posted along with the selfie flaunting his salt and pepper look. “Is it wrong that I am 18 and want to get married to you?” commented a user. Madhavan took notice of the comment and responded: “Ha ha ha. God bless you. You will find someone way more worthier.”At the moment, the actor is busy with “Rocketry: The Nambi Effect”, which is based on the life of scientist and aerospace engineer S. Nambi Narayanan. The marks the directorial debut of Madhavan, who also essays the role of the protagonist.

A

ctress Alia Bhatt is getting a chance to spend quality time with her family while shooting in Ooty, and she is loving it. The actress took to Instagram to share a post-card worthy photograph with her mother Soni Razdan and sister Shaheen Bhatt from Ooty, and it spells “a whole lotta love”. In the image, Alia is covering Shaheen with half her shawl as her mother Soni hugs her from the back. “A whole lotta love,” she wrote along with the photograph. In the image, the Raazi actress is looking pretty without any make-up. Soni also oozes elegance as she smiles for the picture-perfect moment.

I am a rebel: Richa Chadha

T

he much-feted Masaan won Richa Chadha wide acclaim but the actress says she does not identify with her character in the film because she is essentially a rebel. In Neeraj Ghaywan’s Masaan, which completed four years of release on Wednesday, Richa plays Devi, who struggles to shake off the smalltown stigma towards pre-marital sex. Vicky Kaushal and Shweta Tripathi played the film’s other protagonists, Deepak and Shalu, who attempt to transcend the restrictions of their casteist society The 32-year-old actress feels had the film released today, it would have received better distribution and promotional facilites. — All stories from IANS

‘Family Of Thakurganj’: Familiar hang-ups

T

he first thing you notice about Family Of Thakurganj is the sheer number of influences that overshadow its effort at storytelling. It is almost as if director Manoj K. Jha was trying to cross the thematic essentials of Gangs Of Wasseypur with the smalltown spiff of Dabangg and the humour-violence cocktail of Satya, in order to set up a “Deewar”-style disparity in ideals among two brothers. By turns, the film seems like a grim gangland saga that inadvertently becomes funny, and an attempted spoof of a gangland saga that is far from funny. This is the story of Nannu (Jimmy Sheirgill) and Munnu (Nandish Singh), brothers who live in Thakurganj, an Uttar Pradesh

Film: “Family Of Thakurganj”; Cast: Jimmy Sheirgill, Mahie Gill, Saurabh Shukla, Nandish Singh; Direction: Manoj K. Jha; IANS rating: ** (two stars)

smalltown. After their father dies, Nannu takes to crime. He soon becomes a gangster who works for the powerful Baba Bhandari (Saurabh Shukla). Among Nannu’s many transgres-

sions is a thriving extortion racket he runs with his wife (Mahie Gill). His mother supports his criminal ways, but law-abiding younger brother Munnu, who runs a coaching class, resents Nannu’s exploits. The stage is set for a crusty smalltown tale that promises to build its drama around conflict, intrigue and suspense, with apt doses of humour and violence thrown in. Sadly, writer Dilip Shukla, who carved his niche as commercial Bollywood’s smalltown specialist script-

ing the Dabangg films, is out of form here. As the initial interest wanes, the film fails to hold audience’s attention. Lack of USP is evident in the casting too. Jimmy Sheirgill as the smalltown goon and Mahie Gill as the plotting wife would by now seem like cliches in a film’s credits. Saurabh Shukla’s local don and Yashpal Sharma’s corrupt cop suffer the same setback. If these actors of proven talent somehow manage to rise above the film’s overall mediocrity, the relatively greenhorn Nandish Singh, seen last week playing Hrithik Roshan’s brother in Super 30, clearly struggles to hold his own. This is one family whose story suffers from the familiar Bollywood hang-ups. —Vinayak Chakravorty

Rajiv Gandhi killer S. Nalini released on parole CHENNAI: One of the convicts in the former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination case, S. Nalini, was released from Tamil Nadu’s Vellore jail on one month parole on July 25. The Madras High Court on July 5 had granted a one month parole to Nalini on her plea for a six month parole to make arrangements for her daughter’s wedding. Nalini argued her case in person. The court had stipulated that Nalini should not meet politicians and media. In her plea, Nalini said every life convict was entitled to one month of ordinary leave after completing two years in prison and she had not taken the leave even once during the past 27 years she had spent in jail. Besides Nalini, the six other convicted in the case are her husband V. Sriharan alias Murugan, A.G. Perarivalan, T. Suthendraraja alias Santhan, Jayakumar, Robert Payas and Ravichandran. Andhra government set to take over liquor biz IANS, AMARAVATI

ensure strict implementation of regulations and eradicate violations in retailing of Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL)

State Beverages Corporation Ltd or any other entity owned and controlled by the government will have the exclusive right to sell liquor at retail shops, he said. Total prohibition was one of the major promises made by YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) in the recent elections. The government plans to ensure this in a phased manner and ultimately confine sale of liquor to only five-star hotels. Under the first step towards total prohibition, Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy last month declared crackdown on ‘belt shops’ or the illegal extensions of the licensed liquor shops.

From talks of issues between the senior players to rumours that some senior members of the team were not happy

with one cricketer breaking the ‘family clause’, there have been stories making headlines every other day. Speaking to IANS, a CoA member said that while the committee is meeting on Friday, they are unlikely to discuss the issue of rifts in the team unless the same is brought to them by the players themselves. “The CoA cannot be reacting to reports in the media. If the players have any issue, they can/should bring it up with us. As far as the committee is concerned, there is

no rift till the players talk of it with us,” the member said.A senior BCCI functionary said that it was important that the CoA either addresses the news of rifts between the senior players or lay the stories

to rest, adding that asking the manager for a report was always an option. “I wish the CoA would really focus on what they are required to focus on— administration.”

Sindhu advances, Srikanth crashes out of Japan Open IANS, TOKYO

ce Indian shuttler P.V. Sindhu kicked off her Japan Open campaign on an emphatic note as she registered a comprehensive victory over China’s Yue Han in her first-round clash of the $750,000 tournament. The Olympic silver medallist needed just 37 minutes to defeat Han 21-9, 21-17 in her opening match on Wednesday. Fifth-seeded Sindhu will now face Japan’s Aya Ohori -- whom she had recently

defeated in the Indonesia Open -in the second round. However, there was disappointment for Kidambi Srikanth as he bowed out of the men’s singles event after suffering a stunning defeat to compatriot H.S. Prannoy in his first-round match. Prannoy defeated Srikanth 13-21, 21-11, 22-20 in a match that lasted for an hour. Unseeded Sameer Verma also crashed out of the tournament after suffering a 21-17, 21-12 defeat to Denmark’s Anders Antonsen in his match.

Sheila’s rise and fall in Delhi She also enjoyed the support of the Centre even when the BJP was in power NIVEDITA SINGH, NEW DELHI

D

elhi, which was the scene of Sheila Dikshit’s greatest political triumph as she led Congress to power there in three successive Assembly elections to become its longest-serving Chief Minister, also made her witness the most humiliating defeats of her career with her loss in the Assembly and Lok Sabha polls. Her three tenures were remembered for development, infrastructure and reforms as well as for rising crime, financial irregularities and wrongdoings during the Commonwealth Games. She transformed the city by pushing the work on public transport, including Delhi Metro, and also for giving close to 90 flyovers to the city. She was also credited for implementation of court order for CNGbased public transport in Delhi, which is the most polluted national capital in the world currently. She also ensured that the industries are moved out of the residential areas of Delhi. Dikshit was credited for giving several elevated roads and underpasses to the city along with improved water and electricity condition, and building numerous hospitals, colleges and universities.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi pays homage to late Sheila Dikshit, veteran Congress leader and three-time chief minister. (Photo: IANS)

The iconic Signature Bridge over the Yamuna and the recently-inaugurated RTR flyover were her products and the work too was initiated in her tenure. Making the ring road single free to improve the traffic flow was also her gift to the city. Bhagidari (partnership) -- her famous citizen partnership programme -- too brought reform with

citizen groups working as partners for the city’s development. She also enjoyed the support of the Centre even when the BJP was in power. Her administrative skills and rapport with most party legislators was a plus point too. Day by day under her rule, the city saw rapid development in almost all fronts, barring law and

order, which was under the control of the Central government. However, most people in Delhi, including her successor Arvind Kejriwal, blamed her government for the rise in rapes in the national capital. Under her leadership, the Congress won an impressive 52 of the 70 seats in Delhi in 1998. She repeated similar magic in 2003 and

2008 as well. After such a long period of rule, her supporters had also started making plans for her to assume a greater role in national politics but then the preparations for the 2010 CWG happened and Dikshit was targetted for the cost of projects escalated many times over amid allegations of rampant corruption. Her tenure could have survived the Common Wealth corruption charges, but then came the Anna Hazare movement. Another jolt was the gang-rape and death of a young woman in a moving bus in Delhi in December 2012 and the frenzied protests that followed hurt Dikshit badly. She tried to sail through the storm but the repeated attacks brought an end to her long tenure. Kejriwal also blamed her for increased prices of daily food items, shortage of water and rising power bills in the city and used these for attacking her. After losing the 2013 Assembly polls, Dikshit came back into state politics early this year when she was appointed the state party chief ahead of the Lok Sabha polls. Though the Congress saw its vote share increase since the last Lok Sabha and Assembly polls, it could not win any of the city’s seven seats, including North East Delhi from where she had herself contested.

Seed-rakhis in Rajasthan to nurture earth, sibling bonds The usual rakhi is embedded with stones and glitters and it is of no use once the celebrations are over ARCHANA SHARMA, JAIPUR

A

silent movement to curb pollution is underway in Jaipur with thousands of people working to produce plasticfree plantable ‘SeedRakhi’ for the upcoming Raksha Bandhan festival. Artisans from women self help groups, Ficci Ladies Organization (FLO) and start-ups are working together to make these rakhis which can be planted and grown into a tree once it is sown in the ground. “Every year, 620 million rakhis are dumped in waste that never decomposes, generating 1.18 billion tonnes of carbon footprints. This made us ponder and it took us two years of intense research and hard work to bring ‘SeedRakhi’

into existence,” said Nitin Jain, one of the co-founders of the start-up Indibni. “Around 60 crore people celebrate Raksha Bandhan across the world each year, but no one has ever thought about where does the rakhi end up after the grand celebration?” he added. “It actually goes into the waste, adding to millions of existing tonnes of garbage. This made us ponder on the issue and thus we innovated the concept of ‘SeedRakhi’. This is a rakhi which can be sown and grown into plants, helping India become greener and cleaner,” said co-founder Ankit Jain. The usual rakhi is embedded with stones and glitters and it is of no use once the celebrations are over. They are thrown away and the

non-degradable waste ends up polluting the environment. As an alternative, we make our rakhis with seeds of sunflower, amaltas, papaya, rice and basil. These can be grown into plants once the festival is over, he said. Nitin Jain said that their start-up joined hands with FLO and other self help groups in Nagpur, Kerala and Rajasthan to get more trained and skilled hands to bring around 30,000 such rakhis into the market this year. We are also running camps to teach people how to make seed rakhis for a green environment, he added. “We are also planning to empower women self help groups to ensure they have equal opportunities as men. We have ordered coir from a women’s organization in Kerala

Around 60 crore people celebrate Raksha Bandhan each year globally.

while other organic material is being ordered from self help groups in Nagpur, Maharashtra and other parts of Rajasthan,” Nitin Jain said. We are also working with organic farmers in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan to bring our organic rakhis and organic yarn, he added. FLO, Jaipur Chairperson Shweta Chopra said: “FLO skilled women are learning the art of making seedrakhis for a sustainable living. In the long run, they shall learn what

they are doing. As the project promises sustainability, we are working with this group which is producing organic seedrakhi.” The ‘SeedRakhi’ kit comes with coir and manure to sow the seed and grow the plant while making India greener and cleaner. The kit also includes a handmade paper diary which is eco-friendly and the entire packing is also done with recyclable and bio degradable paper and cloth, said Nitin Jain.

Electronic cigarettes damage brain stem cells

e-cigarettes are nicotine-delivery devices that aerosolize nicotine and flavor chemicals through heating, according to the researchers IANS, NEW YORK

I

n the most damning study so far, a US research team has found that e-cigarettes, often targeted at youth and pregnant women, damage brain stem cells. Even short-term exposure of ecigarettes (ECs) produces a stress response in neural stem cells, which are critical cells in the brain, said the researchers from University of California, Riverside. “Although originally introduced as safer, ECs, such as Vuse and JUUL, are not harmless,” said Atena Zahedi, first author of the research paper that appeared in iScience, an open-access journal from Cell Press. “Even short-term exposure can stress cells in a manner that may lead, with chronic use, to cell death or disease. Our observations are like-

ly to pertain to any product containing nicotine,” Zahedi claimed. Present throughout life, stem cells become specialized cells with more specific functions, such as brain cells, blood cells or bone. Using cultured mouse neural

stem cells, the UC Riverside researchers identified the mechanism underlying EC-induced stem cell toxicity as “stress-induced mitochondrial hyperfusion” or SIMH. “SIMH is a protective, survival response. Our data shows that

exposure of stem cells to e-liquids, aerosols, or nicotine produces a response that leads to SIMH,” said Prue Talbot, Professor in the Department of Molecular, Cell and Systems Biology, who led the research. Electronic cigarettes are nicotine-delivery devices that aerosolize nicotine and flavour chemicals through heating. “The high levels of nicotine in ECs lead to a nicotine flooding of special receptors in the neural stem cell membrane,” Zahedi said. Nicotine binds to these receptors, causing them to open up. Calcium and other ions begin to enter the cell. Eventually, a calcium overload follows. Zahedi explained that too much calcium in the mitochondria is harmful. The mitochondria then swell, changing their morphology and function.

AI could be a boon for Alzheimer’s patients IANS, NEW YORK

rtificial Intelligence (AI) can prove to be essential for healthcare providers to detect and manage Alzheimer’s disease or a related form of dementia, from which 44 million people suffer worldwide. In the study published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, the team introduced supervised Machine Learning (ML) as a mod-

ern approach and new value-added complementary tool in cognitive brain health assessment and related patient care and management. With the increasingly favorable instrument “MemTrax” — an online memory test using image recognition -- the clinical efficacy of this new approach as a memory function screening tool has been sufficiently demonstrated. LONDON: Good news for the people who spend most of the time on social media, as researchers have found that spending time on digital platforms such as WhatsApp, is good for our well-being. The study, published in the International Journal of HumanComputer Studies, found that the text-based messaging app, which offers users group chat functions, has a positive impact on psychological health. The research found that the more time people spent on WhatsApp per day, the less lonely they were and the higher their selfesteem as a result of feeling closer to friends and family. “There’s lots of debate about whether spending time on social media is bad for our well-being but we’ve found it might not be as bad as we think. The more time people spent on WhatsApp, the more this related to them feeling close to their friends and family and they perceived these relationships to be good quality,” said Linda Kaye, Professor at Edge Hill University.According to the researchers, group affiliation also meant that WhatsApp users were less lonely. It seems that using WhatsApp to connect with our close friends is favorable for aspects of our well-being. For the study, the research team picked 200 users, 158 women and 42 men with an average age of 24, found that the average reported daily use of WhatsApp was around 55 minutes, with people using it because of its popularity and group chat function. —IANS

R

esearchers have discovered that the use of a pasteurized form of Akkermansia muciniphila-an intestinal bacteria provides greater protection from various cardiovascular disease risk factors. According to the findings published in the journal Nature Medicine, the research team from the University of Louvain developed a clinical study in order to administer the bacteria to humans. For the study, 40 participants were enrolled and 32 completed the

trial. The researchers administered Akkermansia to overweight or obese participants, all displaying insulin resistance (pre-diabetes type 2) and metabolic syndrome, in other words, having several elevated risk factors for cardiovascular diseases. The participants were randomly divided into three groups -- placebo group, those taking live bacteria and those taking pasteurized bacteria -and were asked not to change their dietary habits or their physical activity. Akkermansia was provided as a nutritional supplement. The primary goal of the study was to demonstrate the feasibility of

ingesting Akkermansia daily for three months, without risk. The researchers observed excellent compliance - the supplements were easy to ingest and there were no side effects in the groups taking live or pasteurized bacteria. The tests in humans confirm what had already been observed in mice. Ingestion of the (pasteurized) bacterium prevented the deterioration of the health status of the subjects (pre-diabetes, cardiovascular risks). This research would limit cardiovascular risks and therefore potentially have an impact on half of the population, if properly used.

Spectacular Kuchipudi Presentation Enthralls Chicago Audience BY A STAFF WRITER Nritya Nivedana , a Kuchipudi presentation envisioned by dancers Srivani Vokkarane and Aruna Chandra, was presented at the Hindu Temple of Greater Chicago, on 7th July 2019. Nritya Nivedana is a Kuchipudi dance production conceptualized collaboratively by Aruna Chandra and Srivani Vokkarane. The impetus of this production is the outcome of their academic pursuits. Aruna and Srivani strongly believe that the recently acquired academic knowledge accentuates their presentation by enhancing their thought process and choreographic skills. Prerna Academy of Performing Arts and Sriranga Dance Academy are premier institutions in the Chicagoland area, established to promote the rich Indian culture through classical performing artforms. Both institutions firmly believe in a traditional setting of imparting quality learning to art aspirants. The program commenced with the prayer in praise of Vishwaksena. The Sanskrit verse was compiled by Sri. E. J. Srivenkateshan, Principal, Sanskrit college, Melkote followed by the traditional Purvaranga. Purvaranga Vidhi denotes the worship rituals as laid down in the NatyaSastra, performed by young dancers from the two institutions. This was followed by Oothakadu Venkata Subbaiyyar’s composition on Lord Ganesha – ‘Pranavakaram’, performed by students of Prerna Academy. Aruna Chandra, disciple of Guru Govindarajulu and Guru Umashankar presented her first solo piece ‘Jatadhara Shankara’ in praise of Lord Siva, yet another Oothakadu Venkata Subbaiyyar composition, from the Saptaratna Kritis, in raga Todi and adi talam. She excelled in brilliant intrinsic rhythm for the six

stanzas of the Kriti. The elaborate piece of the evening was the presentation of few excerpts from the Bhama Kalapam. Srivani Vokkarane, disciple of Guru Vyjayanthi Kashi, Guru Veena Murthy Vijay and Guru Vedantam Venkatanagachalapathi, performed the role of Satyabhama along with Guru Veena Murthy Vijay as Madhavi. Srivani excelled in her abhinaya and proved her command over the natya elements of the Kalapam. The dialogues or the vachika of the Kalapam engaged the audience and were very well received. The next solo piece was the Surdas Pada ‘Mohe chuo jani’, presented by Aruna Chandra, depicting Radha as a Khandita nayika who is upset catching a

glimpse of her beloved Krishna being with other women. She excelled in her expressions of sadness, anger, and longing for Krishna. Another highlight of the evening was the Tarangam ‘Ehi Mudam Dehi’ from the second Tarangam of Saint Narayana Teertha. Aruna depicted episodes of Krishna stealing butter and Yashoda ’ s compassion towards him and Srivani depicted the episode of Krishna lifting the Govardhana hill and protecting Gokula. The several implicit and explicit rhythmic patterns were executed on the brass plate with finesse. The Tarangam was followed by a Mangalam penned by Sanskrit scholar Smt. Marakatham Mani from the Chicagoland area specially for this

evening with lyrics comprising of names of both the principal dancers along with their institution names. The evening concluded with an award ceremony to Guru Veena Murthy Vijay. Sriranga Dance Academy presented the title ‘Natyacarya Kalasiromani’ to Guru Veena Murthy Vijay for her outstanding contributions to the field of Kuchipudi dance. The evening was a rich aural treat as well. The dancers were ably supported by Guru Veena Murthy Vijay on Nattuvangam, melodious and brilliant voice by Aravind Sundar, vibrant rhythm by Srihari Rangaswamy and Ravishankar Subramanyan along with flute by Hema Balasubramanian

BY A STAFF WRITER WILLOWBROOK, IL- Chinmaya Mission Chicago’s Badri center in Willowbrook, IL, successfully completed the first week of its 3-week Annual Vedic Heritage Youth Camp for K-12 grades on Sunday, July 14, 2019. The camp kicked off with the auspicious Poorna Kumbha ceremony and the lighting of the lamps on Monday, July 8, 2019. The theme of the camp is Adi Sankara - His Life & Contributions. About 90 children have enrolled in the 3-week camp, with attendees coming from California, New York, Michigan, Georgia and Texas. During the first week, the children began every day with a 45-minute yoga session, followed by learning of slokas. Spiritual classes were conducted by Swami Sharanananda and various Acharyas, with support from Bala Vihar teachers. The children learned about Adi Sankara’s life and the Guru Parampara through stories, games, and classroom discussions. On Thursday, the children performed the Guru Paduka Puja, offering their devotion to all the Gurus, under

the guidance of Swami Sharanananda. Afternoons were filled with fun activities such as arts and crafts, outdoor games including volleyball, cricket and table tennis, and cultural program practice. Children in grades 7 through 12 were challenged by the extempore speech competition on Friday. Saturday was the day of Fun Fair with the ever-favorite Dunk Tank, where the children got to dunk Swami Sharanananda. Other popular attractions included the bounce castle, the snow cones, and cotton candy. Parents were invited to attend the final day’s event on Sunday, where the children from all grades presented their plays on Adi Sankara’s life and teachings. They also shared the slokas they had learned and sang the catchy theme song that detailed the life of Adi Sankara. The camp offered a great opportunity for children to beat the usual midsummer boredom that seems to hit every year, by challenging and inspiring their minds with spiritual teachings, friendly competitions, and creative pursuits. Badri’s Annual Vedic Heritage Camp continues till July 26th.
