Don’t want to delay election, but Donald Trump, GOP results may take ‘years’ with suggest temporary fix for $600 jobless benefit mail-in voting: Trump HiIndia Newsdesk
Trump on Thursday for the first time openly floated the idea of postponing the presidential elections in November, citing irregularities in the mail-in vote. The suggestion was immediately criticised by leaders of the opposition Democratic Party. HiIndia Newsdesk Hours after sparking a political firestorm, US President Donald Trump said on Thursday he does not want to delay the election, but expressed apprehension that counting of mailed ballots could take weeks and hamper the results, leading to a compromised poll. US presidential elections are schedule to be held on November 3. Seeking his second consecutive term, Trump is facing a formidable challenge from Democratic nominee and former vice president Joe Biden, who, according to major national polls, is leading in double digits. The presidential election date in the United States statutorily is set as “the Tuesday next after the first Monday in the month of November” equalling “the first Tuesday after November 1”. Trump on Thursday for the first time openly floated the idea of postponing the presidential elections in November, citing irregularities in the mail-in vote.
The White House and some of its Republican allies in the Senate are signalling they want to extend, at least temporarily, a $600-per-week expanded jobless benefit that has helped keep families and the economy afloat during the Covid-19 pandemic. The move looks to be too little, too late to prevent the lapse of the benefit officially on Friday. Republicans have been fighting to trim back the $600 jobless benefit in the next coronavirus package, but President Donald Trump and some Senate Republicans suggested they could accept keeping the full USD 600 benefit for now. Late-night talks were expected at the Capitol. “We want a temporary extension of enhanced unemployment benefits,” Trump said at the White House. “This will provide a critical bridge for Americans who lost their jobs to the pandemic through no fault of their own.” He added: “It has to be substantial.” But Democrats have so far rejected a piecemeal approach, saying the next relief bill needs to move as a complete package. Before Trump spoke, top Senate Republican Mitch McConnell adjourned the chamber for the weekend while taking a procedural step that could allow voting on a potential compromise next week. Talks so far have yielded little progress.

Cracks visible in China-Russia ties, Moscow accuses Beijing of espionage, postpones S-400 delivery China received the first batch of S-400 missile in 2018 : The S-400 air defence missile system is considered the most advanced of its kind in Russia
A Russian S-400 missile system.
HiIndia Newsdesk Amidst a global uproar against China over various issues including a military standoff with India, Beijing's ties with Moscow appears to have hit a roadblock with the latter announcing a postponement of delivery of S-400 surface-to-air missile systems to Beijing.
The S-400 air defence missile system is considered the most advanced of its kind in Russia, capable of destroying targets at a distance of up to 400 kilometres and a height of up to 30 kilometres. China received the first batch of S-400 missile in 2018, a military-diplomatic source told Russia's TASS news agency.
Citing Chinese newspaper Sohu, UAWire reported, "This time, Russia announced the postponement of the delivery of missiles for the Chinese S-400 system. To a certain extent, we can say that it is for the sake of China. Getting a gun is not as easy as signing an invoice after receiving a weapon." "They say that the work on delivering these weapons is quite complicated. While China has to send personnel for training, Russia also needs to send a lot of technical personnel to put the weapons into service," Sohu said. Amidst a military standoff between India and China, many experts believe that the move could be considered as pro-China. It appears that cracks have started to appear in relations between Beijing and Moscow relations. Recently, Russia has accused one of its leading Arctic researchers of treason, alleging that he gave sensitive information to China. China has tried to play down the development by saying that Moscow was forced to make such a decision as it "is worried that the delivery of S-400 missiles at this time will affect the anti-pandemic actions of the People's Liberation Army and does not want to cause trouble to China."
Indians lead in acquiring Australian citizenship in 2019-20
HiIndia Newsdesk More than 38,000 Indians became Australian citizens in 2019-2020, a 60 per cent increase from the previous year and the largest diaspora group to be granted the country’s citizenship. As per the Australian Bureau of Statistics’ 2016 census, 619,164 people in Australia declared that they were of ethnic Indian ancestry. This comprises 2.8 per cent of the Australian population. Among those, 592,000 were born in India. In the ongoing COVID-19 health crisis, the Australian government started online ceremonies which saw over 60,000 people being conferred the citizenship. “Being an Australian citizen is an immense privilege, which brings both rights and responsibilities. China on Friday said its fully operational home-made Beidou navigation satellite system is ready to provide global services, joining an elite group providing space-based systems comprising the US’s GPS, Russia’s GLONASS and the European Union’s Galileo. Experts told Chinese state media that the “…completion of BeiDou-3 was due to the fact that core technologies cannot be bought or begged from other countries”. More than 100 countries including Pakistan and countries part of the Belt and Road
Initiative (BRI) are already using the system. Over 300,000 scientists, engineers and technicians from more than 400 domestic institutes, universities and enterprises have been involved in Beidou’s development since the 1990s, official media reported Friday after President Xi Jinping commissioned the system at a ceremony held at the Great Hall of the People. CPC -ruled government approved the research and development of a space-based navigation and positioning system, aiming to mitigate the country’s heavy reliance on foreign networks – the US GPS system – in February 1994.
Brazil first lady, another Seasonal flu reports hit record Cabinet minister infected lows amid global social distancing HiIndia Newsdesk Brazil’s first lady and a fifth member of President Jair Bolsonaro’s Cabinet have tested positive for the new coronavirus, officials said Thursday. Science and Technology Minister Marcos Pontes wrote on Twitter that he tested positive after experiencing flu-like symptoms and headache. The 57-year-old is now in isolation. The presidency’s press office said in a statement later that Michelle Bolsonaro, 38, also tested positive. The statement said she appeared to be in good health, but would follow established protocols.
HiIndia Newsdesk Global social distancing rules targeting coronavirus have pushed influenza infection rates to a record low, early figures show, signalling that the measures are having an unprecedented impact on other communicable diseases. In China, where the earliest wide-scale lockdown measures began, new reports of diseases including mumps, measles and some sexually transmitted diseases have declined significantly, though influenza cases have seen the sharpest drop off. Infections reported monthly by the county’s health ministry have dropped by over 90% since the beginning of the lockdown, from
an average of around 290,000 cases a month to 23,000. Canada’s flu surveillance system also reported “exceptionally low levels” of influenza in a recent report, as did other countries that report weekly flu surveillance statistics including the UK and Australia. In its most recent weekly report, South Korea’s infectious disease portal reported an 83% decrease in cases from the same period a year earlier. The World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates there are some 3-5 million severe illnesses and up to 500,000 deaths annually linked to seasonal influenza globally.

The strength of 29 squadrons by 2023 includes two Rafale squadrons, one additional MiG-29 squadron and one additional squadron of indigenous Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas jets, into the IAF fleet as per schedule.
I
ndia signed an inter-governmental agreement with France in September 2016 for procurement of 36 Rafale fighter jets at a cost of around Rs 58,000 crore. The aircraft is capable of carrying a range of potent weapons and missiles and the first squadron of the aircraft will be deployed at Ambala air force station, considered one of the most strategically located bases of the IAF. The Rafale is a modern fighter jet known for its agility, speed, weapon holding capacity and attack capability. The Dassault Rafale has a delta wing design and is capable of g-forces as high as 11g (in case of emergency). The Rafale is available in both single and dual seating cabin (India ordered 28 single and 8 dual seaters Rafale).
Rafale fighter jets V/S Chinese J-20 According to the limted information available, the Chengdu J-20 is a multi-role combat aircraft that China has claimed is a fifth-generation aircraft, compared to the Rafale, which is categorised as 4.5 generation aircraft. However, some defence experts have noted that the J-20 still uses a third generation engine. The J-20 is capable of carrying out a range of missions including air-to-air attack, air-to-surface attack, reconaissance, suppression of enemy defence, anti-ship attacks, interception and nuclear deterrence. Dassault has stated that the Rafale, as an omni-role aircraft, has the capacity to “go beyond the needs of each type of mission,” having been developed to replace seven different combat aircraft models in operation by the French Air Force. The J-20 is the heavier of the two aircraft with a, reported, empty weight of 19,000kg to the Rafale's 10,600. The J-20 is also believed to have a maximum take-off weight of just over 37,000 kg to the Rafale's 24,500kg meaning that both aircraft are suitably able to carry large amounts of fuel and ammunition. However, the Rafale has an edge over the J-20 in the distance (3,700km) it is able to travel during a single sortie. The J-20, reportedly, has a maximum range of 2,000km. While China has not provided much information regarding the J-20's radar system, it is believed to employ an Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) – the same system used by the Rafale and one of the most technologically advanced in the world. However, where either gains an edge depends on how these radar systems are optimised and configured. The Rafale also integrates the SPECTRA electronic warfare suite making it extremely difficult to detect and shoot down. China
has claimed that the AESA radar integrated into the J-20 gives its pilot 360 degree coverage of the battle environment. Unlike India's other aircraft, the Rafale can comfortably go headto-head with the J-20's firepower. Its BVR Meteor and SCALP missiles enable it to carry out long-range air-to-air or air-tosurface attacks in ways that the IAF has never been capable of doing before. The METEOR missile, in particular, is believed to be a real gamechanger with some defence experts claiming that it can destroy a target even before the target knows it has been detected and locked onto. The METEOR is easily comparable to the J-20's PL-15 missile, known to be the most capable air-to-air missile in China's arsenal. Although the PL-15 has a slightly higher range, the METEOR is designed for precision and capable of striking much smaller targets than the PL-15 is able to, including Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). As a stealth aircraft, the J-20 is, supposedly, modelled off the US' F-22 Raptor. Although the Chinese have made large claims about the J-20's superior stealth capabilities, it is worth noting that India's SU-30MKI fighters alone have been able to spot the J-20 in the past. The Rafale has also been able to detect an F-22 Raptor. Where the Rafale gains its real edge over the J-20 though, is its experience. For over 13 years, the Rafale has been in operation, having been deployed in Afghanistan, Libya, Syria, Mali and Iraq, showing remarkable proficiency. The J-20, on the other hand, has extremely limited war experience, forcing one to rely solely on the claims of China to evaluate the aircraft's performance. As far as actual combat goes though, there are several other factors that come into play, most notably the training, experience, tactics and skill of the pilots engaged in an aerial brawl.

The accused, Salman Khan(29) and Syed Ayub(31), have been operating a Facebook page named ‘Hyderabad Youth Courage’, and shared videos appealing to the public to extend financial assistance to the needy, said police. The expeditious measures taken by the Tamil Nadu government to contain the spread of coronavirus has helped reduce the Covid-19 fatality rate to 1.6 per cent in the state and enhance the recovery rate to 73 per cent, Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami said on Wednesday. Tamil Nadu continues to maintain this unique distinction in the country in its battle against the virus, he said. He attributed it to aggressive detection and treating positive cases, while constantly upscaling facilities for the effective handling of the pandemic. Apart from conducting fever clinics for early detection and treatment of the cases both in Chennai and rest of Tamil Nadu, the government has established 1,196 mobile camps throughout the state including 70 in Chennai to detect the virus cases. “Overcoming the challenges posed by the coronavirus, my government strived to

In another statement, Rammohan said he would get tested once again after completion of his self-isolation period, and donate plasma to patients in need.
Shortage of drug, lack of manpower add to Bengaluru’s Covid-19 challenge HiIndia Newsdesk While Bengaluru continues to be the worst hit in Karnataka due to the novel coronavirus pandemic, doctors point out several reasons for the continuing trend — delay in patients seeking medical treatment, difficulty to procure drugs for Covid-19 treatment, and staff shortage among others. As per the statistics shared by the Department of Health and Family Welfare Services, the total number of Covid-19 cases in Bengaluru has seen a jump of over eight folds since the beginning of July. While the total number of positive cases on July 1 in the city was 5290, the same rose to 43,503
as on July 25. The number of fatalities linked to the pandemic during the same period of time has seen a rise of around nine folds, as 862 deaths have been confirmed so far (on Saturday) in the capital city alone from 97 on July 1. Dr Jagadish Hiremath, of ACE Suhas Hospital in Jigani said the demand for ventilators have shot up high as several patients, especially those with comorbidity, delay their visit to the hospital. Over 47 per cent of the total Covid-19 positive cases and deaths confirmed due to the pandemic in Karnataka are in the capital city Bengaluru alone.

Postman Sivan, who trekked 15 kms daily through forest to deliver mail
HiIndia Newsdesk For over a decade postman D Sivan braved harsh weather, hilly terrain, and even wild animals to deliver mail to some of the most remote areas of Tamil Nadu’s Coonoor. “I had been chased by a mother elephant once. On that day, I thought I wouldn’t survive to deliver mail to those eagerly waiting for my arrival with good news,” he recalls over a phone conversation. “I would start my duty by 10 AM at Coonoor Railway station post office, which was my account office. I worked as a mailman at Hillgrove post office, which is 10km away. I would take a local bus from Coonoor bus depot to CMS bus stop. From there I had to walk 7 km through the thick, greeny tea plantations to reach Hillgrove post office which is situated in Lower Singara. Usually, it takes one hour fifteen minutes to reach the branch office by foot,” says Sivan.

ce music director AR Rahman has opened up about the reason he has been composing music for fewer Bollywood films these days. Rahman has composed the music for Sushant Singh Rajput’s swan song Dil Bechara. Rahman said, “I don’t say no to good movies, but I think there is a gang, which, due to misunderstandings, is spreading some false rumours. When Mukesh Chhabra came to me, I gave him four songs in two days. I am doing dark movies, because there is a whole gang working against me, without them knowing that they are doing harm.” He added, “People are expecting me to do stuff, but there is another gang of people preventing that from happening. It is fine, because I believe in destiny, and I believe that everything comes from God. So, I am taking my movies and doing my other stuff. But all of you are welcome to come to me. Khatron Ke Khiladi Season 10
Karishma Tanna
K
hatron Ke Khiladi 10 found its winner in Karishma Tanna. The grand finale of the Rohit Shetty hosted show was aired on Sunday on Colors. Apart from Tanna, Karan Patel, Dharmesh Yelande and Balraj were the finalists. Karishma Tanna had quite an interesting stint on the adventure-reality show. Touted to be Rohit Shetty’s ‘favourite student’, the actor aced most of her tasks and emerged as a strong contender. Being the only female finalist, Tanna had time and again mentioned that she wanted to win the show this year. Throughout the season, the audience was left in splits as a gorilla was shown to have fallen in love with the actor, who tried her best to keep a safe distance from him. Khatron Ke Khiladi 10 was shot in Bulgaria last year on a 40-day schedule. While it started airing from February 22, it went off air after shoots were restricted following the coronavirus-induced lockdown. The makers did not want to exhaust the episodes without shooting the finale. Airing of new episodes resumed earlier this month. Apart from Karishma Tanna, Karan Patel, Dharmesh Yelande and Balraj, the other contestants this season were Shivin Narang, Tejasswi Prakash, Adaa Khan, RJ Malishka, Rani Chatterjee and Amruta Khanvilkar. Prakash, who host Rohit Shetty had declared as a finalist quite early in the competition, had to, unfortunately, bow out of the show during the semi-finale owing to an injury. The finale of Khatron Ke Khiladi 10 was shot last week in Filmcity.

Tenet to open internationally first, in US a week later
n the latest plan for Hollywood’s hopeful return to moviegoing during the coronavirus pandemic, Warner Bros. will release Christopher Nolan’s Tenet in an unprecedented fashion, opening it internationally first on August 26, with a US release in select cities to follow over Labor Day weekend. Warner Bros. on Monday said Tenet will arrive in more than 70 countries on August 26, including Japan, Russia, much of Europe, Australia and Canada. The $200 million thriller will open in the US about a week later on September 3. The staggered release will be tailored to outbreaks of COVID-19. Instead of the usual global launch of a summer blockbuster, Tenet will make its way through theaters as they are open. The film, originally set for release on July 17, has already had its premiere postponed several times. Each time, spikes in cases through the US has forced the studio to rethink its plans. Now, Warner Bros. has upended the usual launch of a would-be blockbuster. When Tenet lands in the U.S., it will be piecemeal throughout the country and dependent on areas where cinemas are allowed to open.

This is my way to tell my father that this is, fortunately, or unfortunately, the closest I could come to becoming a part of the armed forces.

Long-running Broadway hit: England regain Wisden Trophy in Manchester HiIndia Newsdesk Even in their 500th wicket, Stuart Broad and James Anderson, fast-bowling double acts of the deadliest nature, seem to share a sleight of destiny. Their 500th victim was the same batsman: Kraigg Brathwaite, the West Indies opener, whose middle-stump Anderson knocked over three years ago, and whose half-forward pad Broad struck plumb in front of the stumps on Tuesday. Broad ended the day on 501, which wrapped up the match and Wisden Trophy for England. Between his two wickets of the day, Chris Woakes collected five for himself as the tourists surrendered without a whiff of a fight, resisting England bowlers’ onslaught for barely 31 overs. When their innings ended at 129, it seemed their
Stuart Broad joins the elite 500-wicket club as his 10-wicket haul at Old Trafford leads England to series win over West Indies. ordeal was finally over, and the 269-run victory margin was an apt reflection of the superiority England had enjoyed over West
Indies in the Manchester leg of the series. Broad’s 500th, only the fourth fast bowler in this list, had a very familiar feel to it, the method of dismissal bearing all his hallmarks. A quick, low straight ball that scurried onto his Brathwaite’s pads. The build-up, though, has laziness about it, as Broad was struggling with his lengths, often pitching fuller than usual and it seemed he had to wait beyond his first spell. Given the rush that accompanies his wickets, the 21-ball wait seemed an eternity. But Broad has the knack of striking when he’s least expected to. As Brathwaite retreated to the pavilion, Broad held the ball and waved. Just the England balcony and empty stands greeted him back. But he was at least fortunate that his father, Chris, the match referee, was in attendance.

When and how you can see Atalanta wins 2-1 in race for ‘Iron’ Mike Tyson in action again 2nd as Inter beats Napoli 2-0 Mike Tyson will fight another former heavyweight champion, Roy Jones Jr, in an exhibition bout on September 12. The two legends won’t be wearing headgear, but will have bigger gloves that spread out the impact of a blow. HiIndia Newsdesk Mike Tyson, 54, will return to the ring on September 12 to face Roy Jones Jr in an eight-round exhibition fight. As reported first by Yahoo Sports, the clash between the former heavyweight champions will take place at the Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California. Tyson confirmed the news on Twitter with a post captioned: “I. AM. BACK. #legendsonlyleague. September 12th vs @RealRoyJonesJr on #Triller and PPV #frontlinebattle @ TysonLeague”. Tyson has caused a stir online with videos of him working out and getting back into boxing shape. In May, he posted a boxing montage that finished with “I’m back”, further fuelling comeback speculations. Last week, Tyson announced a return — sort of. ‘The baddest man on the planet’ will fight a great white shark as part of Discovery Channel’s annual Shark Week festivities on August 9. “Someone’s gonna get bit,” Tyson warned at the end of the advertisement, though the event itself will be more in line with the gimmicky race between Michael Phelps and the great white shark in 2017. When the “race” was televised, the winner of 23 Olympic gold medals swam alone, and was matched with a computer-generated image of a shark. The bout against Roy Jones Jr. is already more believable. Not a legitimate boxing comeback, Tyson v Jones is a marketing vehicle for the former’s ‘Legends Only League’.

pple is reportedly planning to launch a brand new iMac computer soon. Several reports indicate that the company could launch an Intel processor-based iMac as soon as next week. As per a tipster who goes by the name Soybeys on Twitter, Apple could launch an Intel processor powered iMac computer as soon as Monday. Another report by tipster who goes by the name Jioriku on the microblogging platform says that the upcoming iMac computer will be powered by Intel’s 10th generation processor and that it will not feature any major design changes compared to the company’s existing line of iMac computers. The tipster further said that Apple is saving the redesign for its Apple Silicon based iMac computers that are expected to be launched sometime in 2020. This makes sense as the redesign would be one incentive that may prompt potential buyers to ditch Intel processor powered iMac computers in favour of the iMac computers that will be powered by Silicon that was announced by the company at its annual developers’ conference, WWDC 2020.

A battery and charging cord are included. The app offers a microphone input, and some wearers use it to display social distancing messages— like “stand back” or “6 feet”— that might be difficult to hear someone say with their mouth covered.

Apple starts making first flagship iPhone in India
Apple manufacturer Foxconn has started building iPhone 11 units in a facility near Chennai in India, TechCrunch reported, the first time Apple has made one of its top-tier phones in that country. Apple has manufactured lower-priced iPhone models in India since 2017, and reportedly has been considering moving production of its more premium models there for some time. India was the second-biggest smartphone market in the world in 2019, ahead of the US and second only to China. According to TechCrunch, Apple plans to scale up production in India, which would in turn reduce how much it depends on China, where most of its iPhones are currently made. And while Apple tops the premium smartphone market in India, it has only about a 1 percent share of the total smartphone market there. The iPhone’s price puts it out of reach for many consumers in India.
Alexa will soon be able to launch Android and iOS apps using voice commands Amazon is working on a new feature for its Alexa voice assistant that will let the software launch Android and iOS apps using voice commands, a first for Amazon’s assistant and a bold expansion of its strategy to position Alexa as a platform-agnostic alternative to Apple’s Siri and Google Assistant. Called Alexa for Apps, the new feature is launching today in preview form, meaning Amazon is working with select developers on how they’d like to make use of it. Amazon imagines users on either an iPhone or an Android device asking Alexa to open Twitter and search for a hashtag, and the app would then let the companion Alexa skill do the work of launching the app and inputting the search term

State Sen. Ram Villivalam Alerts Residents to Unemployment Fraud Scam BY A STAFF WRITER CHICAGO, IL – Recent reports of identity theft and unemployment fraud have prompted State Senator Ram Villivalam (D-Chicago) to urge anyone who may have been targeted to file a report. “Using a global pandemic to take advantage of people is unethical and illegal,” Villivalam said. “If you think you’ve been a victim or target of fraudulent activity, report it immediately.” Reports surfaced last week of individuals receiving KeyBank debit cards with an accompanying unemployment benefit letter despite never having applied for assistance. The Illinois Department of Employment Security suspects these mailings may be fraud attempts. IDES currently believes they’re part of a nationwide fraud scheme targeting Pandemic Unemployment Assistance program applicants. IDES staff is currently working with individuals whose identities have or may have been compromised by a scammer. The department is also partnering with local and federal law enforcement to catch and prosecute
the perpetrators. “If you have received a debit card in the mail and have not applied for assistance, don’t activate the card. Call IDES immediately at 1-800-814-0531 to report potential identity theft,” Villivalam said. “We can’t let these scammers get away with their schemes while people are struggling to overcome the pandemic. I would also encourage anyone who has been targeted to check your credit reports for suspicious activity.” When you have filed a report, the Illinois Attorney General is offering information and tips free of charge for those who think
their personal and financial information may be at risk. For assistance, consult their Identity Theft Resource Guide<https:// illinoisattorneygeneral.gov/consumers/ Identity_Theft_Resource_Guide.pdf>or call the toll-free Identity Theft Hotline at 1-866999-5630. Victims of fraud are also encouraged to place a fraud alert through one of the three major credit bureaus should any suspicious activity be found. Individuals should visit the Federal Trade Commission’s website<https:// www.ftc.gov/> for helpful tips on recognizing and reporting identity theft.

BY A STAFF WRITER SAN JOSE, CA- Elevate the Future, a high school student-led educational nonprofit based in California, is helping small businesses stay afloat during COVID-19 and beyond. Co-founded by Indian American students Arjun Gupta from Lynbrook High School and Rayan Garg from Archbishop Mitty High School, Elevate the Future has a team of over 300 students across 33 chapters in 14 states and 16 countries, according to a press release. Through Project Falcon, a project led by Gupta, Garg, Keshav Pradeep, Tanay Biradar, and Pranay Tiru, Elevate the Future is creating free websites and online ordering platforms for struggling small businesses while teaching middle school students (aged 9-14) web design. Elevate the Future’s experienced web design instructors work with small businesses to understand what they would like to see in their website, and continue to work with the owners until they are happy with the final product. As middle school students are taught HTML and CSS by Elevate the Future instructors, they gain the opportunity to utilize their newfound web design skills to help create websites for a real business. Elevate the Future’s instructors guide the middle school students through the creation of the website, teaching students web design while helping small businesses. “We recognized a problem in our education system. Students don’t have a place to apply their knowledge back into their communities,” said cofounder Gupta. “Additionally, especially during COVID-19, small businesses without websites are struggling to bring in revenue. This is why we created Project Falcon. We’re allowing students to apply their learnings to create tangible websites that greatly assist struggling small businesses.” For this initiative, Elevate the Future has partnered with the City of Cupertino, Kiva, Grow with Google, and Novaris Consulting. They project creating websites and online stores for dozens of small businesses this summer and hope to see this initiative producing thousands of dollars in additional revenue for each business they assist, added the release. “It’s really inspiring to speak with these small business owners and hear how we’ve changed the way they are able to produce revenue during the pandemic,” Gupta added. If you are a small business owner and would like a free website and online ordering platform, please email Elevate the Future at teamfalcon@elevatethefuture.org

Marilyn Sanders, Chicago Regional Director, US Census Bureau stated that an array of innovative initiatives will be used to

Indian Couple Sues USCIS for Work Permit Delays BY A STAFF WRITER WASHINGTON, DC –An Indian woman has filed a lawsuit against the US Citizenship and Immigration Services for the alleged delay in issuing work permits, accusing the authorities of sitting on a backlog of at least 75,000 unprinted Employment Authorisation Documents. Ranjitha Subramanya, who is on an H-4 dependent visa and her husband Vinod Sinha on H-1B work visa, in a lawsuit filed before a federal court in Ohio said that while her application to extend her H-4 status and Employment Authorisation Document (EAD) was approved on April 7, she did not receive the work authorisation card till date. As a result, she was forced to stop working for her employer after her initial EAD expired on June 7, 2020. “To date, she has not received her EAD and remains unable to work. Worse, her employer has notified her that she will lose her job if she does not provide proof of employment authorisation by August 9, 2020,” said her lawyer Robert H Cohen in the lawsuit. An H-4 visa is a visa issued by the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to the immediate family members of the H-1B visa holders. Spouses on an H-4 visa can apply for an EAD. The lawsuit alleges that the USCIS is sitting on a backlog of at

least 75,000 unprinted EADs. “By delaying or refusing to provide EADs to plaintiffs and class members, defendants have abused their power in an egregious and outrageous manner, without any reasonable justification in the service of a legitimate governmental objective, and with either an intention to harm plaintiff and class members or deliberate indifference,” the lawsuit said. Early this week, the USCIS said it
has “reduced its capacity to print secure documents,” such as work permits and permanent residency cards, after ending its contract with a third-party company that previously printed the cards. Noting that generally, the EAD is produced and sent to the applicant within 48 hours of the approval, the lawsuit said it has been over 105 days since the USCIS approved Ranjitha’s application but did not print and send her the EAD.

Oakton Community College Helps Create Automotive Technology Pathway for Young Adults FDA NEWS RELEASE DES PLAINES, IL – Evanston resident Kobi Evans, 19, was all smiles after graduating from the Automotive Service and Repair Career Pathways Program, a partnership between Oakton Community College, Youth Job Center in Evanston and Evanston Township High School, on July 14. “This program taught me perseverance and how to stay focused on the task at hand,” said Evans, who plans on attending Oakton this fall. “I learned valuable skills on how to fix cars. And that was something I didn’t know how to do before.” Established in 2014, the program is geared for young adults between the ages of 18 and 25. Participants gain 200 hours of work experience in an automotive service and repair setting over 11-weeks. Oakton’s Workforce Solutions team developed a customized automotive service and repair curriculum specifically for this program, which is taught at ETHS auto labs. The elements were customized based upon employer feedback regarding desired competencies. It includes key content that leads to the first step toward National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification, ensuring participants are knowledgeable in critical areas. Evans was one of five students who graduated from this year’s program. Other graduates include Evanston residents Steven Reyes and Jordan Dorsey and Solomon Cannon and Willie Doles of Chicago. Thomas Sprengelmeyer, who teaches auto mechanics and engineer design at ETHS, served as the instructor of the program. “I love having a small class size as we can dive deeper into things on a more personal level. The aim is for the student to get used to working in an auto shop setting by providing an overview of cars. Topics

include oil changes, tire rotation, how an engine works, suspensions, safety and brakes. With COVID-19, we didn’t get as much shop time as we wanted, but students were still able to learn key concepts in the classroom,” he said. Oakton’s Workforce Solutions partnership with YJC and ETHS is one example of the full range of cost-effective, high-quality training solutions that can be delivered at a variety of locations. Oakton’s experienced team of consultants, trainers and program managers develops customized training programs that enhance employee skills and knowledge to drive business results. “This automotive training is a true reflection of the quality of our customized programs,” says Eilish McDonagh-Hermer, Oakton senior manager, Workforce Solutions. “Attending the automotive graduation is always one of the highlights of my job. This program provides students with a career path and is an amazing collaboration. We are excited to continue these types of relationships with business
partners in Oakton’s community.” At the graduation ceremony, Rose Chavira, career pathways assistant manager for YJC, told the graduates: “It was amazing to see all of you grow over the last few weeks. This will open career opportunities for you. Beautiful things are coming your way.” And Cannon agrees. “I’ve always wanted to work with my hands. Receiving my certificate meant a great deal to me because it provided me with skills I can use for the rest of my life. The program was so focused on hands-on learning and will definitely help me find a job in the automotive field,” he said. Postal Service 0fficials Shrugged Off Complaints About Poor Mail Delivery in Chicago
Mayor De Blasio: Summer Youth Programs Make Coronavirus Comeback BY A STAFF WRITER NEW YORK, NY — Mayor Bill de Blasio kicked off his daily presser with the return of a two-word theme: “young people.” They’ve been cooped up, hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic and deprived of tradition outlets like pools, community centers and summer programs, de Blasio has said numerous times in recent weeks — and Friday proved no exception. De Blasio said Friday with coronavirus numbers holding steady that the city can bring back some programs that have long shaped the summers for young people citywide. “If our young people see we believe, they will believe,” he said. The Summer Youth Employment Bridge Program begins next week for 35,000 youths, de Blasio said. The program was first in danger from coronavirus, then amid budget talks. But now it will give youths ages 14 to 24 a chance to keep busy over the summer, get their first job and draw a paycheck for themselves, de Blasio said. The city is also starting “Play Streets”

that will offer a slate of sports, activities and crafts, he said. They’ll be expanded
with additional 1.5 miles of Open Streets citywide, he said.
CCTO NEWS RELEASE CHICAGO, IL — For days and weeks this month, mailboxes have gone empty across Chicago. Folks cussed out postal clerks. Aldermen fielded telephone complaints. U.S. Rep. Daniel Lipiniski wrote a letter to the U.S. Postal Service demanding a “thorough investigation” and “corrective action” to make mail delivery regular again in Mount Greenwood’s 60655 Zip code. The Postal Service’s “final response” to complaints forwarded by Lipinski downplayed the public outcry over missing mail. The letter claimed delivery complaints dropped 45 percent in July. As for neighbor complaints about rude post office clerks, data from a retail surveys and secret shoppers tells a different story — “100 percent” customer satisfaction, the letter states. Rest assured, the Postal service is “working diligently to improve and correct any identified delivery service deficiencies,” Meyers wrote. “The response is obviously insufficient,” a spokesman for U.S. Rep. Daniel Lipiniski said.
