Sanders debates with moderates The division between leftists and moderates in the Democratic Party was evident during the second debate between their 10 presidential hopefuls IANS, WASHINGTON
T
he division between leftists and moderates in the US’ Democratic Party was evident during the second debate between their 10 presidential hopefuls, with Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren advocating a progressive agenda to defeat Donald Trump in 2020. The three women and seven men on stage in Detroit, Michigan, debated healthcare, border policy and how to defeat Trump on Tuesday. Ten more Democrats, including Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, will debate on Wednesday. The winner of the Democratic presidential nomination will be announced next July at the party convention. The presidential election will take place in November. Instead of an expected confrontation between Sanders and
Democrat Bernie Sanders. (Photo: IANS)
Warren -- the night’s most popular candidates -- the progressive senators joined forces against a group of moderates who have been lagging far behind them in the polls, Efe news reported.
“I don’t understand why anybody goes to all the trouble of running for President of the US just to talk about what we really can’t do and shouldn’t fight for,” Warren said about her moderate col-
leagues, whom she accused of using the arguments of Republicans. The debate organized by CNN, initially revolved around the healthcare system, where Sanders and Warren were the only ones defending a fully public model known as “Medicare for All”, which contemplates suppression of private insurers. “Why do we have to be so extreme?” argued former Congressman John Delaney, presenting himself as the only candidate with experience in healthcare business. “With all due respect, I don’t think my colleagues understand the business...It’s not a business!” replied Sanders, defending healthcare as a “human right”, access to which, he promised, would be free for all, including US citizens and undocumented immigrants, if he was elected to the White House.

financial crisis, the Efe news reported. The central bank said US economic activity has been rising at a moderate rate, job gains have been solid and the unemployment rate has remained low, but it justified its decision by citing “muted inflation pressures” and “implications of global developments for the economic outlook.”

Trump’s loyalist to be new intel chief WASHINGTON: Donald Trump has announced that Dan Coats will step down as the Director of National Intelligence (DNI) after a two-year tenure marked by Donald Trump policy clashes between the two men over North Korea and Russian interference in the 2016 election. The US President has tapped his loyalist, Texan congressman John Ratcliffe, to take over the position. Trump tweeted earlier this week that Coats would step down on August 15 and that he would nominate Ratcliffe, who aggressively defended the President and questioned former special counsel Robert Mueller last week during Congressional hearings involving his report on Russian interference, to replace Coats.“I would like to thank Dan for his great service to our Country,” Trump tweeted.
tensions, global weakness and a notable slowdown in business investment. The FOMC, a policy-making body chaired by Powell, voted 8-2 in favor of the monetary policy action after a two-day meeting, with the two dissenters being Eric Rosengren, President and CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston; and Esther George, President and Chief Executive of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City. Rosengren and George both wanted the federal-funds rate kept at a target range of 2.25-2.5 per cent. The latest data points to economic deceleration in the US, Europe and China.
Osama bin Laden’s son dead: Reports US slaps sanctions on Iran’s Foreign Minister IANS, WASHINGTON
WASHINGTON: The US government on Wednesday sanctioned Iran’s foreign minister for being the “regime’s primary spokesperson around the world,” a step that promises to fuel further tension with the Islamic Republic. Washington’s decision practically excludes the head of Iranian diplomacy Mohammad Javad Zarif from any possible future dialog between Washington and Tehran, the Efe news reported. In a statement to the media, a senior administration official said that Zarif had acted as a “propaganda minister,” not as a foreign minister; and US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo accused him of being a “complicit” to Iran’s “malign activi-
ties” in the Middle East. “This action represents another step toward denying the Iranian regime the resources to enable terror and Javad Zarif oppress the Iranian people,” Pompeo said in a statement. The US Department of Treasury said in a press release that Zarif “oversees a foreign ministry that has coordinated with one of the Iranian regime’s most nefarious state entities, the IRGC-Qods Force (IRGC-QF), which is designated pursuant to terrorism and human rights authorities.” —IANS

amza bin Laden, the son of Al Qaeda founder Osama bin Laden and a rising figure in his late father’s violent Islamist group, is believed to have died in an airstrike, US media outlets reported citing intelligence officials. The date, location and other circumstances surrounding the death weren’t immediately clear, but communication among militants suggested he had been killed, the officials said, according to reports. US President Donald Trump and top administration officials didn’t immediately confirm the reports of the death. “I don’t want to comment on it,” Trump told reporters at the White House when asked about the reports. involved, but the exact date and time were unclear. He was believed to have been born in 1989 in Saudi Arabia and was the only known son of Osama bin Laden who was still aligned with the terrorist group behind the September 11, 2001 attacks.

Triple talaq now unlawful in India

P
resident Ram Nath Kovind on August 1 gave his assent to the triple talaq Bill, making the practice of giving instant triple talaq orally a criminal offense with provisions of a jail term of up to three years. The historic legislation got Parliament’s nod on July 30. Scrapping of the practice has been one of the main planks of the BJP, whose government at the Centre led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, promulgated a number of Ordinances after failing to get the legislation through the Rajya Sabha where it lacked adequate numbers. The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2019 was tabled in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday and was passed by 99-84 votes after a few hours of discussion and negation of a demand for sending it to the Select Committee for
India issues strong demarche to Pak NEW DELHI: India has issued a strong demarche to the Pakistan High Commission here over the killing of an Indian civilian in an “unprovoked act of firing by Pakistan forces”. According to sources, the demarche was issued on July 30. HYDERABAD: Women will be the ultimate sufferers of the triple talaq legislation as they will be damaging their homes and causing harm to their husbands, Asma Zehra, the Chief Organizer of the women’s wing of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) said on July 31. In an interview here with IANS, Zehra described the bill as “antiwomen” “It is instigation of women and end sufferers will be women only. It is totally an anti-women bill,” she said. “The lady who lands in such a problem will get nothing. In fact she will be damaging herself in many ways. whom triple talaq is uttered, is entitled to seek custody of her minor children. Members of a number of parties boycotted voting, benefitting the government in the Upper House where the ruling BJP-led NDA does not have the majority. The bill was passed by the Lok Sabha last week. During the debate on the bill, most of the Opposition parties objected to the provision for imprisonment of a man who utters the word ‘talaq’ thrice to divorce his wife, asking who would look after the family if the erring male is sent to jail. Replying to the debate, Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad countered the Opposition criticism on making Triple Talaq a cognizable offense and said nobody questioned the penal provisions when the Hindu Marriage Act of 1955, Dowry Act of 1961 and section 498A of the Indian Penal Code were brought.

After SC rap, public outrage, BJP expels MLA Sengar IANS, NEW DELHI
A
fter much dilly-dallying, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on August 1 succumbed to immense public pressure and expelled four-time Uttar Pradesh legislator Kuldeep Singh Sengar who is under scanner for an alleged attempt to kill the woman he was accused of raping. The party’s decision came on the day the Supreme Court took a serious note of the incident and ordered that all the cases pertaining to rape and the road accident of the victim will be investigated in New Delhi, not Uttar Pradesh. BJP MP and spokesperson G.V L Narsimha Rao said that there is

no place for any person in the party who is facing serious charges. Sources said that the party was
forced to take action against the MLA because of growing public outrage and the tough stand taken
by the SC sealed Sengar’s fate. The party had earlier refrained from taking stern action as the legislator was seen to be close to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. Party leaders said that now defending him had become untenable in wake of the growing sentiment both outside and within the party. Representing Bangarmau assembly constituency in Unnao, Sengar had joined the BJP in 2017. It had taken immense pressure for the BJP to ensure Sengar is arrested after he was accused of raping a woman in Unnao. The rape victim is battling for her life after being seriously injured in a road accident on July 28 near
Rae Bareli. Sengar, who is in jail, is under scanner for his alleged role in the accident in which victim’s two aunts died and her lawyer got seriously injured. He has been in all the political parties in Uttar Pradesh starting with the Congress, then joining the Bahujan Samaj Party before having a stint with Samajwadi Party and finally landing in the BJP. UP BJP chief Swatantra Dev Singh on Wednesday had said that Sengar was under suspension amidst growing demands for his expulsion. Sources said that his political clout in the region forced BJP to delay the decision to expel him.

Stray cow takes a stroll 26 teeth extracted from kid’s mouth in IIT-B lecture hall IANS, CHENNAI
MUMBAI: An undated video of a stray cow entering a lecture hall of the IITBombay campus has gone viral, embarrassing the authorities at the country’s premier institute of learning. When contacted, an IIT-B spokesperson here on Monday said it is not clear from the video when or where the incident occurred and they are inquiring about it before issuing an official statement later today. Students in a first-floor lecture hall, nevertheless were stunned and amused to see a bewildered white cow with dark spots and medium horns suddenly gallivanting inside their classroom, entering from one side and walking out of the door on the other side. Some students, who were taking a test, even got up and tried to shoo away the cow, but she went on her chosen route calmly without any fuss. Students claim that the incident

But they didn’t bother much as the swelling wasn’t much then and the boy did not cooperate with investigative procedures either. “Later as swelling increased, the parents brought the boy to our hospital,” said P.Senthilnathan, Professor -Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the hospital on Wednesday. He said, an X-ray and CT-scan

of the boy’s lower right jaw showed a lot of rudimentary teeth following which the doctors decided on the surgery. “We opened up the jaw after administering general anaesthesia and saw a bag/sack inside it. The sack, weighing about 200 grams, was carefully removed and was later found to contain 526 teeth -small, medium and big sized,” Senthilnathan said.
Though some were very tiny particles, the doctors said, they had the properties of teeth. It took five long hours for the doctors to remove all the minute teeth from the sack. “It was reminiscent of pearls in an oyster,” the doctors said. “The boy was normal three days after the surgery,” said Pratibha Ramani, Professor and Head of the Department, Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology.

‘UK cabinet shows Indian diaspora impact’ Johnson appointed Priti Patel as Home Secretary and Rishi Sunak as Chief Secretary to the Treasury IANS, NEW DELHI
B
ritish Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s ‘desi’ cabinet, with three Indianorigin leaders in his top ministerial team, is a profound testament of the impact of the Indian diaspora in the UK, British High Commissioner to India Dominic Asquith said on Thursday. Johnson has appointed Priti Patel as Home Secretary, Alok Sharma as International Development Secretary and Rishi Sunak as Chief Secretary to the Treasury. The Cabinet also includes Pakistani-origin Sajid Javid in the top job of Chancellor. “The ‘desi’ cabinet is a testament to just how diverse the UK is, and also what an impact the Indian
diaspora makes in the UK. It is fantastic profile of the current state of UK,” Asquith said at a media briefing.
"The 'desi' cabinet is a testament to just how diverse the UK is and the major impact the Indian diaspora makes in the UK” To a question on Britain’s new immigration policy under the new government, which is to leave the European Union by October 31, he said that Johnson has made it clear that the UK should “attract the best of brains”. Asquith said that Johnson “has
made clear that he is a profound supporter of making sure Britain attracts the best of brains”, and his government will “overlook the whole immigration process”. He added that Priti Patel “has made clear that once we leave the EU, we will not favor geographical barriers and it will be open to all, on the basis of merit”. Johnson has announced to explore an “Australian style pointsbased system” as part of “a radical rewriting” of the immigration system. Both Johnson and Patel support “economic” migration and don’t support giving priority to EU migrants - which could be beneficial for skilled Indians, including students who go to the UK to study.

NEW DELHI: The number of Indians studying in the UK has almost doubled in the last three years, with over 21,000 student visas issued to Indians till March 2019. A white paper on extending the duration students can stay and work post study is also in the works in an effort to make Britain an attractive destination for Indian students, officials said. With Australia and Canada attracting international students in droves with their easier work and study norms and overtaking the UK as preferred student destination, the new British government is giving serious thought to giving education cooperation the attention it deserves. The number of Indian students in the UK registered a 40 per cent increase over the last year. Of the Indian students who applied for visas, 96 per cent were successful, said British High Commissioner Dominic Asquith. The Ministry of External Affairs
said in Parliament that as many as 7,52,725 Indian students are studying abroad, with the US the preferred destination for higher education. Canada and Australia take the second and third spots. The US has 2,11,703 Indian students. Canada introduced its Post-Graduation Work Permit Program (PGWPP) in 2006 to allow students to gain work experience which qualifies for permanent residency. Australia’s point-based immigration policies were also aimed at encouraging international students to pursue permanent residency in Australia. However, after the UK announced the abolition of post-study work rights in 2011, the number of Indian students went down sharply from a peak of 38,677 in 2011 to 16,655 in 2016. Keen to attract foreign students, who helped give a boost to regional jobs and local businesses, the UK government is planning to increase the number of months a foreign student can stay back and work.

While a senior aide to Representative Devin Nunes, who was the chairman of the Intelligence Committee when Republicans controlled the House, Patel worked to raise questions credibility of the allegations against Trump of colluding with Russians that led to the protracted inquiry by Special Counsel Robert Mueller. outh African President Cyril Ramaphosa has made public a six-page affidavit in which he detailed his meetings with the controversial Gupta brothers to the commission of inquiry investigating “state capture”. The Indian-born Gupta brothers -- Ajay, Atul and Rajesh -- are known to be close to former South African President Jacob Zuma. His son, daughter and one of the former President’s wives worked for the family’s firms, according to media reports. HYPERBOLE FOR DIPLOMACY
The nature of US-Pakistan talks has to be closely examined as these have significance for India’s policy in the neighborhood DC PATHAK, NEW DELHI
P
resident Donald Trump has completely demolished the universally practiced mantra that diplomacy was the art of understatement which kept it from running into irreversible positions and robbing it of all flexibility. Being flexible is not the same thing as being shifty in international relations. Instant responses could prove to be potentially injurious in that arena particularly if they happened to be couched in hyperbolic expressions that made diplomatic ‘pressure’ indistinguishable from military ‘blackmail’. Being ‘brutally frank’ does have a place in foreign policy but the response should not create a suspicion that a falsehood had been resorted to in tailoring it to a particular context. All of this happened on the maiden visit of Prime Minister Imran Khan of Pakistan to Washington to meet President Trump. The nature of US-Pakistan talks during the visit has to be closely examined as these have significance for India’s policy on Pakistan, Afghanistan and the new terror rooted in Islamic extremism. Trump had unambiguously denounced the present Pakistan
US President Donald Trump with Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan at the White House in Washington DC.
regime for providing a safe haven to Islamic terror outfits across the spectrum on its soil, cut off funding earlier provided for the ‘war on terror’ on account of the duplicitous conduct of the Pakistan army in combating the Islamic radicals of Al Qaeda- Taliban combine as well as the Haqquani network and demanded that Pakistan must play the honest broker in bringing
about a peace pact between US and Taliban to facilitate American troop withdrawal from Afghanistan. Pakistan put up a show of recalcitrance - manoeuvring all the time to keep India out of the Afghan table and planning to retain its sway in Afghanistan in any future arrangement there. A careful assessment by Pakistan
of how desperate President Donald Trump might be to reach a ‘peace pact’ with Taliban in Afghanistan and pull the US troops out of that country before the next Presidential election in US, must have preceded the visit of Prime Minister Imran Khan for his first one-on-one meeting with the American President. Trump had discarded the policy line of his predecessors of making a
distinction between ‘good terrorists’ and ‘bad terrorists’ in the Indian context and demanded upfront that Pakistan put down both Islamic radicals of Al Qaeda-Taliban who threatened the US-led West and the terrorists belonging to outfits like LeT, Jaish-e-Mohammad and Hizbul Mujahideen that specifically targeted India in Kashmir and elsewhere. President Trump might have thought it was no big deal if he endorsed the idea of India and Pakistan resuming talks to bring peace to Kashmir — wherein his understanding ‘bombs were exploding every day’ — and even offered to mediate particularly after Imran Khan had openly appealed to him to help the two countries to resolve their differences through dialogue. The pompous in Donald Trump got the better of the seasoned statesman that an American President had to be, when he claimed that Prime Minister Modi, during a bilateral meeting between them at the G20 summit at Osaka, had requested him to mediate on Kashmir. India has promptly denied that any request was ever made in deviation from India’s consistent stand that Indo-Pak talks needed no third party involvement.

Then last year, Sunita participated in the Mahila Gram Sabha at her village panchayat. It was for the first time that she was attending a public meeting and sharing her problems and suggestions related to her village with other women like her. “I had never even visited the village panchayat before that. But then I wondered, for how long can I just sit and do domestic work?” Sunita said. In the meeting, she brought up
two issues -- to set up a sanitary napkin machine and open a government library in the village for girls. Sunita said the sanitary napkin machine was a necessity as there was no system in the village to get them, without which girls had to miss school during their periods. Subsequently, the Udaipuria

Attending panchayat meetings is a big step for women in a feudal society like Rajasthan. “We did not know what the powers of the panchayat were. If all the women of Rajasthan want, they can solve all the problems of their villages through the panchayats,” said Sunita. Gradually, women started coming for the gram sabha meetings. To solve problems related to the
health of women and children, 37 gram panchayats have been allocated Rs 10.7 lakh through Mahila Sabhas. Issues related to women and children such as separate toilets for women, sanitary napkin vending machines with napkin disposal system, vaccination, libraries and street lights in villages have been included in the Gram Panchayat Development Plan (GPDP).

T
he year 2019, in America will be remembered as significant. Not only the year saw the most diverse Congress and the highest representation of women in American politics, it also brought to the fore many women of color who are making impactful changes in America. One such woman is Sadaf Jaffer. This January, Sadaf was sworn in as the mayor of Montgomery Township, N.J. What Sadaf ’s selection means to millions of immigrants and people of color in America can be determined from the fact that she is America’s first female Muslim mayor, first female Pakistani-American mayor and also first female South Asian American mayor in America. A woman’s rights advocate, Jaffer stands for a diverse, unified America and this comes from years of her experience and study in the field. She is a doctorate from Harvard University and specializes in Islam, gender studies and South Asian history. She is also a post-doctoral research associate in South Asian studies in Princeton University. Jaffer has been an advocate for minority rights, anti-bias and fair justice for a long time. Her decision to run for the mayor was a manifestation of the changes she wanted to see in the country. Ever since taking oath as the mayor, she has been continually making efforts to bridge the gap between communities. Her background in religion and cultural studies gives her a greater sensitivity to tackle the issues people may be facing on the ground level. She has also started an initiative called the Montgomery Mosaic, a monthly discussion group that is aimed to bring communities together. The group is affiliated with national Not in Our Town Movement. A fierce advocate of rights and a proud family person, Mayor Jaffer is married and has a lovely daughter. In between her community based commitments, Mayor Jaffer spoke with Hi India on being born in Chicago, her growing up years and how South Asian women are making a welcome presence in America. Excerpts from an interview: QQ Tell us about your growing up years. Were you born in US or Pakistan and about your family and their early years in the US? I was born in the US in Chicago. My mom was born in Karachi and my dad was born in Aden and they both immigrated and settled in Chicago. QQ As a child to immigrant parents what are your strongest memories growing up? I have beautiful memories of the mural near my childhood home to commemorate Earth Day, playing at the park near our house with my friends, visiting family in Pakistan and Yemen as a child. At school, I loved sharing things about my family experience with all the diverse students, learning about ancient Egyptian history and Shakespearean plays. I remember how excited we were as a family when my parents bought their current home and having friends over from high school to watch Bollywood movies. My parents wanted to teach us about the world so we also we traveled to places like South Africa, Singapore, and the UK as children. QQ Let’s talk about your school and college years. When did you think of politics and activism? I was always interested in human rights as well as literature and the arts. I was in the advanced acting company of my high school and editor of our literary magazine. I used to teach current events and theater classes to middle school students. I would say my participation in activism started more in college. I attended the School of Foreign Service at

Sadaf Jaffer: The first ever Muslim woman mayor in America
Born to Pakistani parents, Sadaf Jaffer takes immense pride in her culture and creates events to help people understand Pakistani, Muslim and South Asian culture better
Womaniya | By zoofeen maqsood Georgetown University and thought I wanted to go into diplomacy. During and after college I worked at the US Department of State and the Marine Corps. My focus was more on international issues until I entered graduate school. QQ Tell us about your academic journey? I always loved school, especially courses on history, literature, and the arts. I enrolled at the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown because I thought I wanted to go into diplomacy. I had never really considered an academic career until I was encouraged by my college professors to pursue academic research. I wanted to contribute to knowledge and education and broaden the horizons of my students just as my teachers and professors had done for me. After college, I moved to India for two years to study Urdu at the American Institute of Indian Studies on a fellowship from UC-Berkeley. I then enrolled in a PhD program at Harvard in IndoMuslim culture and now teach and conduct research as a Postdoctoral Research Associate in South Asian Studies at Princeton University. QQ What role parents played in your journey and what was your family life like growing up? My family was very loving growing up and very focused on education. They were certainly demanding and had high expectations of us, but I see now how setting high expectations can be a blessing. When I was facing some challenges with my PhD, my father advised me that education is a type of wealth no one can take away. When my daughter was born my mother advised me that the most important thing was to love my child and everything else was secondary. These are the types of things I’ve learned from my parents. QQ How did the journey towards being a mayor begin. How important it is for women and immigrants to be active in US civic life? I first started thinking of running for office when I saw that my elected officials were not representing my values. I received training from Emerge NJ and connected to my local, county, and state parties. I was elected to the Township Committee in 2017 and sworn in as Mayor
in January of 2019. Our voices are needed in the political system and unfortunately, we’re not appropriately represented. We need to be the change we wish to see in the world. If you don’t respect the values of those in office, please consider running or supporting those who share your values. The system can be very inclusive if we try participate. QQ What are your major concerns as a Mayor right now? I aim to improve transparency and communication with the public. I also aim to have a more diverse and inclusive administration. We all benefit when people from all walks of life and all backgrounds are represented in the political system and I believe it is essential that the public realizes government is there to serve them and address their concerns. QQ Your message to girls and immigrant families like yours? Listen to that voice inside that guides you and tells you that you can accomplish your goals. We must work in solidarity with others. Never forget that the rights we have are due to the advocacy and struggles of those who came before us. I especially advise people to connect with their local communities and local government. You can make a difference!

‘Judgementall Hai Kya’: A killer thriller T he Judgementall Hai Kya celebrates the bizarre, at the cost of giving in to glaring flaws, much like the grammatical gaffe in its title. At the film’s core is the tested good-triumphs-over-evil formula, although done in a way few Bollywood efforts have ever tried. Quirky storytelling mixes black humour and moody suspense with a sombre subtext that draws from the “Ramayan” to drive home its comment on violence against women. This is a very different Bollywood film. Which also means it may not fit everyone’s definition of entertainment. Bollywood debutant director Prakash Kovelamudi probably isn’t worrying on that count, what with

Judgementall Hai Kya cast Kangana Ranaut, Rajkummar Rao.
Kangana Ranaut heading the cast along with Rajkummar Rao. The duo sets off intriguing chemistry in what is essentially a story of hate rather than romance. Together, they remain the biggest asset of the film.
Kovelamudi makes interesting use of psychedelic colours and an arresting background score to highlight the bleak world of his protagonist. Wanton hues of Holi soak the screen in the opening scenes, ironically taking you through the disturbing back story of the film’s central character Bobby as a little girl. That contrast between the screenplay and its audio-visual impact continues as the story moves forward. The first half builds up well, blending drama with humour and
introducing interesting characters such as Bobby’s manager-cumwannabe boyfriend (Hussain Dalal). The story really takes off when the brooding Keshav (Rajkummar) and his wife Reema (Amyra Dastur) move in as tenants in Bobby’s house. For a film that seeks to shock with an ending that virtually turns the story on its head, the climax is a predictable one. The writing and execution should have been sharper towards the end. The film has very few characters, which means the lead players - particularly Kangana - gets to occupy most of the screen space. The actress has made a career essaying characters that are off their rocker, and she brings alive the tailormade Bobby effortlessly. —Vinayak Chakravorty

A lot can change over coffee Cafe Coffee Day (CCD) founder-chairman V.G. Siddhartha commits suicide over mounting financial distress, body found in Karnataka river IANS, MANGALURU
Saga of a coffee baron’s brewing success & failure
C
afe Coffee Day (CCD) founder-chairman V.G. Siddhartha is no more, as his body was found in Karnataka’s Netravathi river, near here, police said on Wednesday. He was 60. “Two fishermen found Siddhartha’s body early this morning about 500 meters away from the road bridge from where he alleged to have jumped into the river on Monday night,a Mangaluru Police Commissioner Sandeep Patil told reporters here. The port city of Mangaluru is about 360km west of Bengaluru. The body was found by the fishermen near Hoige Bazar in trousers but without shirt. “The body has been shifted to the state-run Wenlock hospital mortuary here for autopsy. It will be handed over to Siddhartha’s family and taken to Chikkamgaluru for the last rites,” Ullal Congress legislator and former minister U.T. Khadar said. “It was identified to be Siddhartha’s with a gold ring on his right hand finger, a digital watch on his left hand and shoes he was wearing when he appears to have jumped off the road bridge. On asked about the body found with the torso naked and only trousers on, Khader said though it was for the police to investigate whether he took them off before jumping into the river, as they

were not found on the bridge or in the vicinity during the 36-hour long search operation. The 36-hour long massive search in the river had continued over the last two night which led to the spot where the body surfaced and seen by the two fishermen. A fisherman had claimed to have seen a man jumping into the Netravathi river from the same bridge, almost 24 hours after his driver raised an alarm about the missing businessman. Two days prior to his disappearance, the coffee baron had left behind a note to his employees that revealed he was in deep debt. The mountain of debt was impairing his business as working
capital requirements could not be met. It led him to sale his stakes in IT firm Mindtree that gave him some room to manoeuvre. “I have failed to create the right profitable business model despite my best efforts. I would like to say I gave it my all. I am very sorry to let down all the people that put their trust in me. I fought for a long time but today I gave up as I could not take any more pressure...,” his note read. In his desperation, he was also reportedly in a dialogue with global beverage maker Coca-Cola for an equity sale in flagship Cafe Coffee Day (CCD) at an enterprise valuation of around Rs 10,000 crore may have been on the anvil.
BENGALURU: The dramatic disappearance of India’s coffee baron V.G. Siddhartha under mysterious circumstances on Monday night and the subsequent discovery of his body in the backwaters of Netravathi river near Karnataka’s Mangaluru coast have sent shock waves in the corporate world, as he was an expert in brewing an empire, which ironically took a toll on his life at the age of 60. Though Siddhartha was well-connected with the who’s who of India Inc and the political class by virtue of being the elder son-in-law of senior BJP leader S.M. Krishna in the southern state, his meteoric rise as a smart and ambitious entrepreneur was fraught with inherent risks, as was evident from a note he purportedly wrote to his company board on July 27, listing the reasons for his failure as a “successful businessman”. From dabbling in shares, investments and securities as a management trainee/intern at JM Financial Ltd, which is now JM Morgan Stanley, in then Bombay over three decades ago to brewing Asia’s biggest coffee estate in the southern state and sewing the country’s largest retail chain of 1,752 Cafe
Coffee Day (CCD) outlets across 243 cities, Siddhartha’s life turned full circle till ‘karma’ or nemesis caught up with him so much that it forced him to give up his life. Son of a coffee estate owner, Siddhartha launched CCD two decades ago and created a global brand even before Starbucks forayed into India by expanding it into a retail chain that increased the consumption of coffee in variety of flavors and brews through 1,752 outlets, 31,000 vending machines and 12,000 corporate accounts. “It is Siddhartha’s innovative style of promoting coffee that made the brew popular across the country and dispelled the myth that coffee was consumed only in south India, unlike tea which is a pan-India drink,” a coffee trader told IANS. According to Forbes, Siddhartha was valued at $1.15 billion.
Yediyurappa wins floor test in Karnataka IANS, BENGALURU
K
arnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa has won the floor test in the Assembly by voice vote. “Yediyurappa has won the confidence motion he moved by voice vote with more yes than nos. As there is no demand for division of votes by the opposition leader (Siddaramaiah), I declare the motion passed, proving majority support in the House,” Speaker K.R. Ramesh Kumar declared in the House. Earlier, Yediyurappa moved the one-line motion minutes after the House began the day-long special session at 11.05 a.m.

“I move the motion, seeking support of all the members from both sides in the House and appeal
for unanimous vote in favour of it,” said Yediyurappa in Kannada after the House Speaker permitted
him to seek the trust vote without debate. The one-line motion was put to voice vote after Congress leader Siddaramaiah and Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) leader and former Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy spoke against it and slammed the ruling BJP for coming to power through horse-trading and poaching of their rebel legislators. With the effective House strength reduced to 208 from 225 after 17 rebel legislators of the coalition Congress and JD-S were disqualified by the Speaker on July 25 and July 28, the BJP had the support of 106 members, including one Independent H. Nagesh
from Mulbagal assembly segment, about 95 km east of Bengaluru. In contrast, the coalition allies had only 100 members, including 66 from the Congress and 34 from JD-S against the 105 halfway mark for a simple majority. The BJP’s victory was greeted with cheers and thumping of desks by the treasury benches and boos from the opposition benches. The chief minister also told the House that soon after assuming office on July 25, he announced Rs 4,000 each to all farmers across the state in addition to the Rs 6,000 the central government is giving under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (scheme) as minimum income support per annum.

Jaipur came into the match with confidence running high following back-to-back victories over Bengal Warriors and U Mumba. They had

For Jaipur, skipper Deepak Niwas Hooda led from the front with 14 points while Sandeep Dhull chipped in with six tackle points, his second High 5 in a row. For Haryana, defender Sunil returned with a High 5 in a losing cause. Jaipur began the game strongly by getting Naveen off the mat in the fifth minute do-or-die raid which saw Amit Hooda make a
I walk out for my country: Rohit NEW DELHI: Hours before the Indian team left for the US to play two T20 internationals against the West Indies, skipper Virat Kohli had Rohit Sharma rubbished rumors of any rift in the dressing room. In fact, coach Ravi Shastri went a step ahead and said that no individual was bigger than the team. Interestingly, vice-captain Rohit Sharma has now posted a photo on Instagram which says: “I don’t just walk out for my Team. I walk out for my country.” Speaking at the pre-departure conference, Shastri had said: “The way the team plays, no individual is bigger than the team. The way they play is in the interest of the game. You cannot have that consistency if there is a rift or whatever.” Skipper Kohli had in fact called the rumors of a rift baffling. “It’s absolutely ridiculous to read such stuff that comes out...if team atmosphere isn't good, we couldn't have played well," Kohli insisted.

Survival in the Independent Grocery World BY A STAFF WRITER NEWARK, NJ- NRS Helps Small Businesses Survive and Thrive Against Big Box Competition Grocery stores and bodegas throughout the United States represent an important part of the history and culture of the communities they serve. Walk into an “old world” grocery store and you’ll unearth precious memories from childhood. Delicious products, familiar smells, and friendly service. In today’s competitive retail market, many of these small stores are at risk of going out of business. Big-box and chain stores, can lure customers away with lower negotiated pricing, marketing and technology, not to mention online retailers who don’t have rent to pay, leaving the small, independent business searching for answers. Stocking up in larger quantities allows bigbox stores to negotiate better prices with manufacturers which allows them to offer the consumer lower prices. Smaller, independent retailers do not have this advantage. The inability to compete in prices has forced many to small businesses to shut down. This is happening all across the country. Independent retailers need powerful tools to help them manage their business more efficiently. They are struggling to stay open and competing for survival. However, there are many obstacles holding them back; access to capital, language barriers, and technical difficulties. Many of these stores still use antiquated cash registers and log sales and inventory by hand. The outdated and time consuming method of manually checking out customers and keeping track of sales and inventory makes it difficult for small shops to promote their products and services competitively. National Retail Solutions helps small businesses by providing technology and user friendly tools to help retailers tracks sales and inventory,

attract customers, and grow their business. Simple to use technology improves operating efficiency. NRS has a stellar reputation for customer support. It is a comfort to retailers to know that NRS is here for them, to help them with selling more, monitoring inventory and building customer loyalty. NRS founder, president, and CEO, Elie Y. Katz, summarized the company’s mission: “We were founded with a mission: to help the little guys survive and thrive amidst Goliath competition. We’re extremely committed to our cause.” NRS offers a comprehensive, but easy to use, point of sale (POS) system that can help grocery, liquor, and tobacco retailers get back on track. The POS offers tools to manage costs, optimize inventory, and seamlessly process transactions. It even comes with its own, exclusive, built in customer rewards program - the BR Club. Customers can sign up for free using just a phone number to receive a key fob which gives them access to monthly discounts on popular, club-exclusive items. BR Club promos are advertised on the POS’ sleek, customer-facing
ad screen. This screen also offers retailers the ability to run their own in-store promotions and as. The POS can be accessed remotely via the web or its dedicated app. Additionally, merchants have the option of recharging Boss Revolution® one-touch pinless phone cards on the POS - a great way to boost revenue. With the addition of NRS PAY (or any other credit card processor), the POS offers seamless payment processing making it a one-stop shop. NRS is a division of IDT Corporation, which, since 1994, has provided local and international calling cards, bringing Boss Revolution® products and services to over 40,000 retailers nationwide, with 3.5 million+ customers. Since its founding in 2015, NRS has installed over 8,000 POS systems across the United States. Within the same mission of helping small independent retailers, NRS recently launched NRS PAY, a low rate credit card processing system designed to help retailers save money and improve efficiency. With a simple tap, dip, swipe or key, retailers can now provide their customers a faster and more efficient payment process. The credit card processing industry can be shady, so having an honest and reputable company that won’t take advantage of you with hidden fees and unknowns is critical “With the integrity on which NRS was founded, we are looking out for our customers, big and small. No more being ripped off by card-processing companies - or your neighbor, cousin or family member in the card processing
business, promising that they want to save you money. “ Elie Y. Katz, founder, President & CEO of National Retail Solutions (NRS) NRS PAY card processing interfaces with NRS POS, or can be used independently by retailers, professionals, or almost every business in any industry. “NRS makes you feel as if you’re family. If I have a problem, I call their support hotline and within minutes, a team member is providing me help”, says Diego Fuentes, a bodega owner in New Jersey. Another customer of NRS, Alicia Peres, says “The POS has been so great - it’s almost like a good luck charm to our store. The ability to restock in an efficient manner has saved us a lot of money - and customers are complimenting how professional our equipment is. They love saving money on the club specials when they check out.” With the ecosystem of the POS bundled with the BR Club loyalty program and NRS PAY credit card processing, National Retail Solutions is providing grocery, liquor and tobacco retailers the opportunity to compete at the same level as large chains. Says Katz, “All a person needs to succeed is the right tools - NRS offers the best combo of tools for success in today’s competitive retail market!” To learn more about how the National Retail Solutions point of sale ecosystem and NRS PAY merchant services can help you make more money, visit www.nrsplus.com or call (833) 289-2767. US DEPT. OF JUSTICE PRESS RELESE FORT MYERS, FL – U.S. District Judge Sheri Polster Chappell has sentenced Divesh Valanju (30, India) to 21 years and 10 months in federal prison for producing child pornography. Valanju had pleaded guilty on April 11, 2019. According to court documents, Valanju met an 11-year old child via two online messaging apps. He lied about his name on the apps and exchanged sexually-explicit images with the child. On two occasions, Valanju arranged to meet the child at Max Hasse Park in Collier County. After the victim’s parents dropped her off at the park, purportedly to meet her friends, Valanju picked the child up, drove her to a motel and filmed sex acts that he performed with the child. This case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Innocent Images Task Force. It was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Charles Schmitz. It is another case brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice to combat the growing epidemic of
Divesh Valanju
child sexual exploitation and abuse. Led by the United States Attorneys’ Offices and the Criminal Division’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section, Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who sexually exploit children, and to identify and rescue victims. Spicy diet linked with dementia, says study
Chili intake included both fresh and dried chili peppers but not sweet capsicum or black pepper IANS, NEW DELHI
T
hink twice before adding that extra kick of chili sauce or chopped jalapeno to your meal as researchers have found that a spicy diet could be linked to dementia. According to the research involving 4,582 Chinese adults aged over 55, evidence of faster cognitive decline was found in those who consistently ate more than 50 grams of chili per day. Memory decline was even more significant if the chili lovers were slim. The study, published in the journal Nutrients, showed that those who consumed in excess of 50 grams of chili a day had almost double the risk of memory decline and poor cognition. “Chili consumption was found to be beneficial for body weight and blood pressure in our previous studies. However, in this study, we found adverse effects on cognition among

older adults,” said the lead author of the study, Zumin Shi from Qatar University. Chili intake included both fresh and dried chili peppers but not sweet capsicum or black pepper. According to the researchers, capsaicin is the active component in
chili which reportedly speeds up metabolism, fat loss and inhibits vascular disorders but this is the first longitudinal study to investigate the association between chili intake and cognitive function. Those who ate a lot of chili had a lower income and body mass index
(BMI) and were more physically active compared to non-consumers. People of normal body weight may be more sensitive to chili intake than overweight people, hence the impact on memory and weight, said the researchers. “Chili consumption has been linked previously to weight and blood pressure control. Capsaicin is the active ingredient which helps in energy expenditure and fat oxidation However, a new Chinese study says long term consumption of Chili more than 50 grams per day may have a significant impact on the memory,” Sahil Kohli, Consultant -Neurology, Narayana Superspecialize Hospital in Gurugram, told IANS. “So if you like chilies keep their quantity less than 50 grams per day till the time further studies are conducted to validate the new research,” he added.
5 hours daily on phone ups risk of obesity
NEW DELHI: Researchers have found that students who use their smartphones five or more hours a day are prone to higher risk of obesity and likely to have other lifestyle habits that increases the risk of heart disease. According to a study, the researchers analysed 1,060 students with 700 girls and 360 boys of Colombia with an average age of 19 years and 20 years, respectively. “It is important for the general population to know and be aware that, despite being undoubtedly attractive for its multiple purposes, portability, comfort, access to countless services, information and entertainment sources, mobile technology should also be used to improve habits and healthy behaviors,” said study lead Author Mirary Mantilla-Morron from the Simon Bolivar University in Colombia. —IANS
‘An apple carries 100mn bacteria’ Red wine can treat depression, anxiety: Study IANS, LONDON
NEW YORK: In a good news for wine lovers, researchers have found a compound present in red wine which can treat depression and anxiety. The plant compound resveratrol displays anti-stress effects by blocking the expression of an enzyme which controls stress in the brain. “Resveratrol may be an effective alternative to drugs for treating patients suffering from depression and anxiety disorders,” said Ying Xu, Associate Professor, University at Buffalo in the US. The findings, published in the journal Neuropharmacolog, shed light onto how neurological processes are
impacted by resveratrol — a compound having numerous health benefits and found in the skin and seeds of grapes and berries. While research has identified resveratrol to have antidepressant effects, the compound’s relationship to phosphodiesterase 4 (PDE4), an enzyme influenced by the stress hormone corticosterone, was unknown. Corticosterone regulates the body’s response to stress. Too much stress, however, can lead to excessive amounts of the hormone circulating in the brain and, ultimately, to depression or other mental disorders. Corticosterone regulates the body’s response to stress. (Photo: IANS)
N
ext time when you eat an apple for extra fibre, flavonoids and flavor, remember that you are also gulping down about 100 million bacteria, and whether these are good or bad microbes may depend on how the apples were grown. Most microbes are inside the apple but the strains depend on which bits you eat, and whether you go organic, say researchers, adding that organically-grown apples harbour more diverse and balanced bacteria which make them healthier and tastier than conventional apples. “The bacteria, fungi and viruses in our food transiently colonize our gut. Cooking kills most of these, so raw fruit and vegetable are particularly important sources of gut microbes,” said Professor Gabriele Berg from Graz University of Technology in Austria. The study, published in the journal Frontiers in Microbiology, compared the bacteria in conventional store-bought apples with those in visually-matched fresh organic ones. Stem, peel, flesh, seeds and calyx — the straggly bit at the bottom where the flower used to be — were analyzed separately. Overall,
The majority of the bacteria are in the seeds, with the flesh accounting for most of the remainder. (Photo: IANS)
the organic and conventional apples were occupied by similar numbers of bacteria. “Putting together the average for each apple component, we estimate a typical 240-gram apple contains roughly 100 million bacteria,” Berg informed. The majority of the bacteria are in the seeds, with the flesh accounting for most of the remainder. So, if you discard the core, your intake falls to nearer 10 million. The question is: Are these bacteria good for you? “Freshly harvested, organicallymanaged apples harbour a significantly more diverse, more even and distinct bacterial community, compared to conventional ones,”
explained Berg. Specific groups of bacteria known for health-affecting potential also weighed in favor of organic apples. “Escherichia-Shigella — a group of bacteria that includes known pathogens — was found in most of the conventional apple samples, but none from organic apples. For beneficial Lactobacilli — of probiotic fame — the reverse was true,” said the researchers. Methylobacterium, known to enhance the biosynthesis of strawberry flavour compounds, was significantly more abundant in organic apples, “especially on peel and flesh samples, which in general had a more diverse microbiota than seeds, stem or calyx”, said the researchers.
