Respite for Indian immigrants New US regulations for Green Cards unlikely to impact Indians
ARUL LOUIS, NEW YORK
T
inadmissibility ground that has been on the books for years.” The immigration rules have required immigrants to be selfsufficient or for their sponsors to meet certain income guidelines to show they support them so that they do not become “public charges”. But the new rules tighten the definition of who is or will become a “public charge” by imposing tighter guidelines. The new requirements will not apply to refugees, those seeking asylum, children given special immigrant status, and victims trafficking, criminal activity and domestic violence, according to the notification. According to Doug Rand, an immigration consultant and former White House immigration official, the measures could cut immigration by half. “The true impact of the public charge rule - and perhaps one of the Trump administration's chief policy goals - is to create a 'chilling effect' that frightens immigrant families into disenrolling from public benefits, even when the rule does not apply to them or their US citizen children,” he said. Marielena Hincapie, Executive Director of the National Immigration Law Centre, called the new rule “a cruel new step towards weaponizing programs that are intended to help people by making them, instead, a means of separating families and sending immigrants and communities of color one message: you are not welcome here”.
he new US regulations restricting those unable to support themselves financially from getting permanent residence status is unlikely to have a major impact on Indian immigrants. The regulations targets those who rely on government assistance programs like subsidized housing or food or have used the health insurance for the poor, making them ineligible for Green Cards or permanent residency. It immediately set off criticism that it will drastically reduce immigration to the US and target the poor. Kenneth Cuccinelli, the acting Director of US Citizenship and Immigration Services, countered that the changes would ensure that people who came to the US were not a drain on tax-payers and were self-sufficient. As a result of the policy, “the benefit to taxpayers is a long-term benefit of seeking to ensure that our immigration system is bringing people to join us as American citizens, as legal permanent residents first, who can stand on their own two feet, who will not be reliant on the welfare system”, he said. A large proportion of immigrants from India are professional or relatives of professionals and the community as a whole is the highest-earning group with a median annual household income of over $110,000, according to the US census bureau. In contrast, the median income for all groups was $61,000.
There more than 600,000 Indians waiting for their Green Cards, which could take more than a decade to materialize. A majority of them are professionals or members of their families and many are already here on H1-B visas, the temporary work permits for professionals.
Trump threatens to pull US out of WTO
‘India, China no longer growing nations’
WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has threatened to pull Washington out of the World Trade Organization (WTO) following "years of mistreatment" at the hands of the organization. Speaking at a campaign rally in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on Tuesday, Trump said: "We will leave if we have to." "They have been s****ing us for years, and it's not going to happen any longer," he said, according to media reports. The WTO is an intergovernmental organization that regulates international trade between nations. Trump said the US does not need the WTO if it fails to address loopholes that favor certain nations. He criticized the organization, saying Washington is disadvantaged as a member of the global bloc.

A majority of them are professionals or members of their families and many are already here on H1-B visas, the temporary work permits for professionals. US President Donald Trump has said that he wants to introduce a merit-based immigration system that would favor those who are well-educated or have special skills. But the new rules will affect those Indians who are not well-off and maybe using public benefits
or appear likely to require them. Cuccinelli said: “For over a century, the public charge ground of inadmissibility has been part of our nation's immigration laws. President Trump has delivered on his promise to the American people to enforce long-standing immigration law by defining the public charge
IANS, WASHINGTON
U
S President Donald Trump has said that India and China are no longer "growing nations", claiming that they are "taking advantage" of the tag from the World Trade Organization (WTO) and warned that he will not let it happen anymore. "They (WTO) view certain countries like China, India... as growing nations. Well, they have grown, and they had tremendous advantages... We're not letting that happen anymore...Everybody is growing but us," said Trump at a campaign rally in Pittsburgh on Tuesday. They (India and China) were taking the advantage of a developing nation tag from the WTO,

putting the US to disadvantage, he said at the rally. The WTO is an intergovernmental organization that regulates international trade between nations. The White House pointed out in
a memorandum that China and many other countries continue to style themselves as developing countries "allowing them to enjoy the benefits that come with that status and seek weaker commitments than
those made by other WTO members", media reports said. Trump said the US does not need the WTO if the Genevabased organization fails to address loopholes that favour certain nations. Shortly after issuing the memorandum, Trump said in a statement that the WTO was "broken" as "the world's richest countries" claim to be developing countries and get special treatment to avoid WTO rules, reports say. China, with whom the US is engaged in a bruising trade war, has been identified by Washington as the "most significant abuser" of WTO regulations. Since joining the WTO, China has insisted that it is a developing country, according to the memorandum.

Sonia back as Congress chief The CWC appealed to Rahul Gandhi to take back his resignation dynasty tag from the Grand Old Party. But even there, the loyalists prevailed. t was a golden opportunity to finally bid adieu to the dynasty tag, bring in new blood and re-energize the rank and file, but the Congress partys loyalist old guard won the day. And it is not for want of trying by Rahul Gandhi, who refused to buckle, and stuck to his resignation. The over 12-hour-long deliberations on August 10 gave Congress supporters hope that a new face would emerge. The party has quite a few Young Turks who are intelligent, capable, work very hard and have good communication skills, which are needed to match the political onslaught of the Bharatiya Janata Party. Leaders like Jyotiraditya Scindia, Mukul Wasnik, Sachin Pilot, Mallikarjun Kharge, have the

potential and are dedicated. However, the Old Guard, among them Ahmed Patel and Ghulam Nabi Azad, who are close to Sonia Gandhi, convinced her to return as interim president, despite her failing health.
PM-inspired stimulus package may come very soon NEW DELHI: After revoking Article 370 granting special status to Jammu and Kashmir in a seamless manner and the security dragnet in the erstwhile state not resulting in a single bullet being fired, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has begun to focus on the beleaguered economy haemorrhaging in an ugly manner. In his meeting with Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and her team, Modi has argued for quick alleviation measures. With the FPI surcharge causing cataclysmic corrections in the capital markets, the BSE Sensex has seen a drop of 8 per cent since early
June, accentuated after the Budget speech which imposed the tax, and the PM is reportedly concerned about disinvestment receipts which are contingent on a Narendra Modi stable equity market. While the Parliament has passed the Finance Bill and tweaking it now will have to see an extraordinary measure, the Finance Ministry has reportedly sought the Law Ministry’s view on how to overhaul it.
The very fact that five regionwise sub groups were formed after the morning Congress Working Committee meeting, to deliberate on the name of a possible leader, was indicative of Rahul Gandhi’s determination to shake off the
outnumbered by the loyalist gang. Before the second Congress Working Committee began at 8.30 p.m., the chorus of “Rahul Gandhi” by the sub groups had begun, and the inevitable was staring the party in the face. To do justice to Rahul, who has matured in the past few years as a
leader, he refused to buckle to the demands of the Old Guard. The CWC, which is full of loyalists who are mostly over 75 and are fiercely protective about their privileges within the party, had appealed to him to take back his resignation once again on Saturday morning during the CWC. They had refused to accept Rahul’s resignation which he tendered in May, right after the party’s poor showing in the Lok Sabha elections. Rahul Gandhi has been trying to infuse new blood and thinking into the party, but the Old Guard will have none of it. Rahul Gandhi reached the venue of the evening CWC an hour late. By then, he knew which way it was heading. It was when the Old Guard realized that Gandhi scion would not succumb to the chorus of “Rahul Gandhi again”, that they decided to accept his resignation.
Pehlu Khan case: All accused acquitted IANS, JAIPUR
A
lmost two years after Pehlu Khan was lynched by a mob of cow vigilantes, the Alwar sessions court on July 14 acquitted all six accused in the case, giving them the benefit of the doubt. The judgement was announced in the court of Alwar additional district and session judge number-1, Dr Sarita Swami. The hearing of the case ended on August 7 and nine people were held accused in the case which also included three minors who were out on bail. The family of the victim produced 44 witnesses. Will Ayodhya verdict come before CJI Gogoi’s retirement? IANS, NEW DELHI
T
he vexed seven-decade-old Ayodhya dispute is finally on the fast track in search of a judicial solution, thanks to the day-to-day hearing by a five-member Supreme Court Constitution bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi. While the speedy trial is underway, a question in everybody’s mind is whether a judgement will come before Justice Gogoi retires on November 17. After a court-appointed mediation panel failed to evolve a consensus among the various parties of Hindus and Muslims on the dispute, Justice Gogoi decided to

conduct hearing on all working days of the week. The matter reached the Supreme
Court after the Allahabad High Court in 2010 gave a verdict to divide the 2.77-acre land in Ayod-
hya equally among the three parties -- the Sunni Waqf Board, Nirmohi Akhara and Ram Lalla. The lawsuit, filed by the deity in Ayodhya case, has also included the birthplace as a co-petitioner, and together it has sought claim over the 2.77 acre of the disputed site, where the disputed Babri Masjid was razed in December 1992. A lawyer connected with the case, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said: “Since the Chief Justice has taken up this case, he is expected to deliver a judgement on it before he retires... If he is not able to deliver the judgement during his term, then the case would have to be heard afresh by another bench. This
usually never happens.” The bench has already conducted six day-long hearings and so far, Nirmohi Akhara has completed its argument and counsels of ‘Ram Lalla Virajman’ (the presiding deity at the disputed site) are arguing the matter. On the sixth day of hearing in the Ayodhya case, the counsel for ‘Ram Lalla Virajman’ claimed that there was enough archaeological evidence to establish that the mosque was built on temple ruins, and so Sharia law would not recognize the structure as a mosque. The Hindu parties majorly do not agree with the Allahabad High Court’s decision to divide the land between three parties.

‘There is no bigger decision than Kashmir’
Prime Minister Narendra Modi. (Photo: IANS)
In an extensive conversation with IANS Editor-in-Chief Sandeep Bamzai, Prime Minister Narendra Modi walks him through the most contentious issues facing India and his remedies for the maladies SANDEEP BAMZAI, NEW DELHI
W
ith Prime Minister Narendra Modi completing 75 days today in his second avatar as the nation's helmsman, he speaks extensively to IANS on his priorities going forward and also touches upon various sensitive issues varying from Jammu & Kashmir, medical reforms, criticality of education to taking the knife to the tumor of corruption within the bureaucracy. In an extensive conversation with IANS Editor-inChief Sandeep Bamzai, the Prime Minister walks him through the most contentious issues facing India and his remedies for the maladies. Q: You complete 75 days of your government today. Every government passes through such milestone numbers and talks about steps taken. Why should we think your government is any different? We have set an unprecedented pace within just the first few days of our government. What we have been able to achieve is the result of 'Spasht Neeti, Sahi Disha (Right Intentions, Clear Policy)'. In just the first 75 days of our government, a lot has happened. From children's safety to ChandrayaanII, from action against corruption to freeing Muslim women from the scourge of Triple Talaq, from Kashmir to Kisan, we have shown what a resolute government with a strong mandate of the people can achieve. We have taken a headstart in tackling the most pressing issue of our times, with the formation of Jal Shakti Ministry for a mission mode and integrated approach to improve water supply and augment water conservation. Q: There has been some noise on the medical reforms front from various quarters. Do you think the changes you have brought in are well thought through? When we formed the government in 2014, there were many concerns about the existing system of medical education. Earlier, courts have used strong words for the institu-
tion overseeing medical education in India, calling it a “den of corruption”. A parliamentary committee did rigorous study and took a very dull view of the state of affairs in medical education. It pointed out mismanagement, lack of transparency and arbitrariness. Earlier governments too had given a thought to reforming this sector but could not go through with it. We decided to go through with it because this is not a matter that can be taken lightly, as it concerns the health of our people and future of our youth. So, we set up an expert group to look into what is plaguing it. The expert group studied the system carefully and brought out the problems and improvement areas. It is based on the suggestions from experts that we came to the current bill. Q: A couple of important decisions related to corruption sent shock waves in the bureaucracy what message were you intending to send? Since India's independence, one of the biggest things holding us back was corruption. Corruption spared
“

”
no one, neither the rich nor the poor. People resorted to corruption either due to some greed or to make a quick buck or due to some compulsion. But even these people wanted corruption to stop. The question in everyone's mind was that who will start the fight against corruption and from where. The fight against corruption always had the support of people, media, institutions, because everyone agreed that corruption was a major obsta-
cle in India's development journey. And this was not only an issue related to money. Corruption eroded trust in the society, be it a government office or the market. A person going to the police station would think whether he will get justice and similarly a person buying something from the market will fear adulteration. We decided, right from day one, to attack the menace of corruption. Someone had to make a start somewhere, we decided to do this, without caring for political consequences. The results show that we are succeeding. Not only is corruption coming down, but trust in society is increasing. The number of people filing income tax returns almost doubled in the last 5 years. We have systematically clamped down on corruption and made tax filing and refund process online. Already, refunds are being credited directly to bank accounts of income-tax payers, without any human intervention. Going a few steps further, we aim to make faceless assessment of income tax return a reality. This would be a game-changer in ushering a new era of transparency in the tax system. We are firm in our commitment that neither will we allow corruption nor will we tolerate any form of undue harassment.
Q: Your decision on Article 370 has been welcomed by many and also been opposed by a few. There seems to be an uneasy calm at the moment. Why do you think the people of J&K will stand with you? Please see the list of people who have opposed the decisions about Kashmir- the usual vested interest

groups, political dynasties, those who sympathize with terror and some friends in the Opposition. The people of India, irrespective of what their political preference is, have supported the steps taken in Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh. This is about the nation, not politics. The people of India are seeing that tough but essential decisions that were earlier assumed to be impossible are becoming a reality. It is now clear to everyone how
Articles 370 and 35(A) fully isolated Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh. The status quo of seven long decades clearly could not fulfill people’s aspirations. The greatest casualty was the lack of any proper economic avenues to increase earnings. Our approach is different- instead of the vicious cycle of poverty, the people need more economic opportunities. Q: What is your message for the people of J&K in the new dispensation, unshackled and unfettered to reap the future of reform, one replete with jobs and a better life? For years, intimidation ruled the roost. Let us now give development a chance. My sisters and brothers of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh always wanted a better future for them but Article 370 did not enable it. There was injustice against women and children, ST as well as SC communities. And, most importantly, the innovative zeal of the people of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh was not harnessed. Now, from BPOs to startups, from food processing to tourism, many industries can avail investment and create opportunities for the local youth. Education and skill development will also bloom.

Kashmiri Pandit diaspora rejects move against Article 370 axing
Social support helps students to exercise more
The Global Kashmiri Pandits Diaspora said opinions of a group of people cannot be considered the voice of people of erstwhile state IANS, NEW DELHI
T
he Global Kashmiri Pandits Diaspora (GKPD) has rejected a petition submitted by 64 citizens including Pandits, Sikhs and Dogras condemning the abrogation of Article 370 that gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir. GKPD is a Kashmiri Pandit civil society movement of volunteers drawn from all major Kashmiri Pandit organizations across the globe, along with several friends from Jammu and Ladakh. A statement issued by the GKPD congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah for “this historic and landmark decision”. Professor Renuka Dhar on behalf of GKPD said: “As major stakeholders in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir and the Union Territory of Ladakh, we pledge to work alongside government of India to make the dream of ‘one nation-one constitution’ a reality. “We will work together with all communities to ensure that the glory of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh is restored to how it was before it was ravaged by terrorism.” GKPD said it was also anguished at attempts by some sections of the media to project the

opposition to the axing of Article 370 of the Constitution as the views of “all the people of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh”. GKPD said opinions of a group of people cannot be considered the voice of the people of the erstwhile state.
“Abrogation of Article 370 is a tribute to nationalist forces across the country and a step towards further integration of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh with mainstream India “We strongly condemn the attempts by sections of media to
maliciously highlight the views of a few individuals while ignoring the views of the vast majority of the people of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh who are strongly in favour of the abrogation of Article 370,” said Dhar.
NEW YORK: Making exercise a stress outlet may help students attain recommended amounts of physical activity and to maintain that routine, students need social support from family and friends, said researchers including one of an Indian origin. “Accessing internal and external sources of inspiration and resilience is an effective and sustainable model for positive change,” said Vinayak K. Nahar, Assistant Professor at the University of Mississippi. “Physicians who want to encourage their patients to get more physical activity should suggest the techniques from this study,” he added. For the study published in The Journal of the American Osteopathic Association, researchers surveyed 135 college students, assessing their willingness to exercise for the recommended 150 minutes per week. Participants were asked to weigh pros, like improved energy and health, against perceived disadvantages, like being tired and not having enough time for academics or leisure. Once convinced that more exercise would benefit them, students were asked what they needed to get started. —IANS
Collection centres open in UAE for Kerala Indian expat pleads to find missing wife in UAE IANS, DUBAI
SHARJAH: An Indian expat in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has made a desperate plea to the community to help find his wife who has been missing for the last 65 days from their home here. Rohini Perera, who is mentally unstable and mother of five children, ran away from her house near Al Kuwaiti Hospital on June 9 and has not been seen since, her husband Madhusudhanan, 63, told the Khaleej Times. “I am sure she is alive somewhere. I don’t want to believe that we have hit a dead end. I am hitting the road every day and combing the streets for hours hoping to find my wife,” said Madhusudhanan, who is from Kerala. The family had filed a police complaint to find 58-year-old Perera, who is Sri Lankan, but the husband said
there has been no breakthrough in the search. Madhusudhanan said his wife was taking medication for mental illness. She wasn’t wearing footwear when she went missing and left her mobile phone at home, according to the report. The family, including their five children, was living without valid documents in the UAE earlier and their plight was reported by the daily. Help poured in during the last amnesty declared by the UAE and the family legalized their status. But the husband said all the media attention took a toll on Perera and she started to show symptoms of mental illness.

ndian expats from Kerala in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have opened collection centres for donations to support the thousands of displaced families in their flood-hit state, the media reported. After one of the worst flooding in its history last year, many parts of Kerala was limping back to normalcy when nature’s fury struck again this year. Heavy rainfall and landslides in northern districts of Wayanad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kasargod and Kannur have so far killed 77 people and pushed thousands to relief camps. Though far away from the tragedy, Malayalees who form the biggest Indian expat community in the UAE, have set up the centre to collect relief materials for the affected, the Khaleej Times reported. Shoukky Sulaiman, joint secretary of the group, said three collection centres have been set up in Dubai. “We are mainly collecting cloths, hygiene items for ladies and
kids, toiletries, slippers and some food items like oats and biscuits. “We will be sending the collected items by cargo, which will be personally received by our members. We are all trying to do whatever we can,” he added. Bicky Boss, another member, said he was leaving for Kerala on Tuesday to help in the distribution of relief materials.

hina’s central government has not yet intervened in demonstrations in Hong Kong but, if it does so, it will not be a repeat of the Tiananmen crackdown 30 years ago, an editorial published in the state-run newspaper Global Times said on August 16. The newspaper asserted that “China is much stronger and more mature, and its ability to manage complex situations has been greatly enhanced”, reports Efe news. The daily said that Beijing has not decided to intervene by force to crack down on protests in Hong Kong but adds that “this option is clearly at Beijing’s disposal”. “The People’s Armed Police assembling in Shenzhen has sent a clear warning to the Hong Kong rioters. If Hong Kong cannot restore the rule of law on its own and the

‘Prepared for over 3,600 Rohingya’ YANGON: Myanmar said on August 16 it was prepared for Bangladesh to repatriate more than 3,600 Rohingya refugees who fled violence in Rakhine state two years ago after a military-led crackdown against the Muslim minority. The Director-General of International Organizations and Economic Department at Myanmar’s Foreign Ministry, U Chan Aye, told Efe news that his country was ready to start the process next on August 22, but was waiting for the Bangladeshi side to confirm the date. “If the process goes well, we will start with over 3,600 people,” he said, according to Efe news.

The projectiles were fired from its eastern coastal county of Tongchon in Kangwon province earlier in the day, Yonhap News Agency quoted Seoul’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) as saying. He is also a good man in a ‘tough business,’” Trump said in a Twitter post. “I have zero doubt that if President Xi wants to quickly and humanely solve the Hong Kong problem, he can do it. Corbyn plans to call no-confidence vote IANS, LONDON
L
abour chief Jeremy Corbyn has urged leaders of other opposition parties and Conservative rebels to install him as the UK’s caretaker Prime Minister in order to stop a no-deal Brexit, the media reported on Thursday. If he wins a no-confidence vote in the government, the Labour leader plans to delay Brexit, call a snap election and campaign for another referendum, the BBC reported. Newly-appointed Prime Minister Boris Johnson said he wants a deal with the European Union (EU), but insists the UK must leave the bloc by October 31 “do or die”.

Corbyn outlined his plan in a letter on Wednesday, saying the caretaker government would be “strictly time-limited”. The opposition leader said that
he would seek to call a no-confidence vote at the “earliest opportunity when we can be confident of success”. To defeat the government he would have to secure the backing of a majority of MPs. “This government has no mandate for no-deal, and the 2016 EU referendum provided no mandate for no-deal. “Following a successful vote of no confidence in the government, I would then, as Leader of the Opposition, seek the confidence of the House for a strictly time-limited temporary government with the aim of calling a general election, and securing the necessary extension of Article 50 to do so.”

It’s obvious that they fail to understand the era they are living in”. “Washington will not be able to intimidate China by using the turmoil 30 years ago,” said the editorial, whose mention of the Tiananmen massacre is rare among official media of the Communist regime. According to the newspaper, the US government has “the ability to fool Hong Kong’s radical protesters and incite them to stage a color revolution. But it is unable to influence Beijing’s attitude on the Hong Kong issue”. The Global Times denied that US President Donald Trump has tried to link the Hong Kong protests to negotiations between Washington and Beijing to end the trade war that both economic powers have been waging since March 2018. It would be a “futile effort”, said the daily.

Scrapping Article 370 tipping point
Kashmir Pandits feel battle for hearts and minds is larger war which has to be won by PM Modi IANS, JAMMU
S
triking down of Article 370, which gave Jammu and Kashmir a sense of specialness, is the tipping point as it can further escalate the communal tension in the state, says Shadi Lal Pandita, a Kashmiri Pandit, who was forced to migrate along with his family to Jammu in 1989 in wake of terror attacks. According to him and a section of others who were also forced to leave the Kashmir Valley due to militancy three decades ago, feel that doing away with Article 370 was done in haste, without taking violence-hit people into confidence. Talking to IANS here, they say the real challenge for the Narendra Modi-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government is how to ensure the safe return of around 80,000 Kashmiri Pandit families, who are settled largely in Jammu and Delhi for the past three decades, to their hometown in the Valley. They feel the battle for the hearts

and minds is the larger war which has to be won by Modi. And the hearts can not be won through dictatorial acts. Not impressed with the way Article 370 was revoked and its abrogation was not a solution to the ongo-
ing turmoil in the Valley, Pandita, 60, said the Central government has no rehabilitation policy for them. More important, the scrapping of the Article and the subsequent military buildup have created a fear psychosis or “we can say a deep rift
between the Muslims and the Kashmiri Pandits”, and this could lead to graver problems for them, he said. Another Kashmiri Pandit migrant O.N. Raina added, “For quite some time, the rift between them and the Muslims was narrowed as they (the
Muslims) had started feeling that something is missing in their normal life without them. For centuries, we were living together harmoniously.” “Now their anger is certainly against a particular community and we will be the sufferers again,” an anxious Raina added. “In fact, the BJP government has never done anything for our rehabilitation. It is only the Congress government that played a crucial role in our rehabilitation,” Pandita, who is the President of Soan Kashmir Front, which represents the displaced people, told IANS. He was migrated to Jammu when he was 30-years-old and was doing a private job in Srinagar. The Kashmiri Pandits, who are just two percent of state’s total population, say their rehabilitation policy must include extending a political status to them by reserving at least three seats in the 87-member legislative assembly for them, and tenements should be set up in clusters in satellite towns in the valley.
Rahul politicizing Kashmir Kashmir an internal visit issue: Governor Malik matter: India to China IANS, BEIJING

ndia has conveyed to China that the change in status of Kashmir is an internal matter and would have no implication for its boundaries with Beijing. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar also sought to reassure his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi that India was not raising any additional territorial claims and the Chinese concerns in this regard were misplaced.
Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik.
SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik on Tuesday accused Congress leader Rahul Gandhi of politicizing the Kashmir issue by seeking to put several preconditions to visiting the Valley, and which he said would lead to further unrest and problems for the people. After Rahul said there have been reports of violence in Kashmir, the Governor on Monday said he will send him an aircraft to visit the Valley and see for himself the ground situation. He said Rahul Gandhi was responding to fake news possibly spread from across the border about the situation in Kashmir, which is peaceful with negligible incidents. Malik said Rahul can check for himself with various Indian channels
which have reported the correct position on the Kashmir Valley. “He can also check the detailed submissions made by the government in the Supreme Court today which heard a case on this matter and left it to the government.“Rahul Gandhi is politicizing the matter by seeking to bring a delegation of opposition leaders to create further unrest and problems for the common people,” he said in a statement. “He has put forth many conditions for visiting J&K, including meeting mainstream leaders under detention”. Since the Governor “had never invited him with so many pre-conditions, he has referred the case to the local police and administration to examine the request further,” the statement. —IANS
During the bilateral meeting with Wang, Jaishankar also emphasized that the revocation of Kashmir’s special status and division of the state “had no bearing on Pakistan as it was an internal matter”. Talking firm, Jaishankar told Wang that the changes “did not impact the Line of Control”. Last week, China termed the creation of Ladakh Union Territory as “unacceptable and void”, and accused India of “putting Chinese

DREAM OF ‘ONE NATION, ONE CONSTITUTION’ REALIZED: MODI PM stresses on population control and creation of a Chief of Defense Staff post IANS, NEW DELHI
W
ith the revocation of special status for Jammu and Kashmir, Indians can now say with pride ‘One Nation, One Constitution’, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Thursday, and outlined the future path of his government for the next five years, stressing on population control, cutting down on plastic use, drinking water for all, creation of a Chief of Defense Staff post and thrust on infrastructure. Addressing the nation from the ramparts of the Red Fort, with a colourful safa tied round his head, Modi said that in his first term he brought the country back on track, and “it is moving fast”. But his new mandate is to fulfill the dreams and aspirations of the people of a 21st century, of a country that can soar high. “In the next five years we will take the country forward, we are fulfilling the works one by one.” On revocation of Article 370 and 35 A that gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir, he asked what was the reason that the clauses were allowed to remain though they did not help in the development of the people of the state. Modi, whose speech lasted over one and a half hours, said his government’s policy is not to side-step
problems or allow them to fester. “But now things have come to such a pass that there is no time to even ignore problems,” he said, adding the fact that the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganization Act, 2019 was passed in both houses of Parliament with two-third majority that indicated that people were in favour of it. He said that both the articles had over the past 70 yeas fanned separatism and terrorism in the state and nurtured dynasties, “so that corruption and divisions were created” in the state and common people deprived of the benefits of central laws. He said the new arrangement of two Union Territories of J&K and Ladakh will allow the people there to directly communicate with the Central government without any restrictions. Attacking the opposition for supporting Article 370 and 35A, Modi said they were doing it only for political gains. “Those

One Constitution’. Sardar Patel’s dream of one Bharat has been realized.” In a major announcement, Modi said the government would create a Chief of Defense Staff (CDS) post, a long-pending recommendation of various defence panels. “India will have a Chief of Defense Staff - CDS. This is going to make the forces even more effective. The new CDS post will oversee all the three wings of the armed forces,” he said. On abolishing Triple Talaq, Modi said it was aimed at benefitting Muslim women. He said the country has taken several steps for women, including ending the evil of female foeticide and child marriage. “If we can take so many steps then why not raise our voices against the evil of Triple
talaq, so that our Muslim sisters get equal respect and are part of the country’s progress. The decision is not to be weighed in political terms,” he said. Modi targetted Pakistan, without naming it, saying that India stands strongly against terrorism, and is presenting before the world the “true colours” of those who shelter and finance terrorism. “We will expose before the world all exporters of terror. We, together with other countries of the world, will fight those sheltering terrorism, financing and exporting terrorism.” He said neighbours Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka have been victims of terror attacks. He greeted Afghanistan that will in four days celebrate 100 years of independence.

he 73rd Independence Day was celebrated in Jharkhand on Thursday, with Chief Minister Raghubar Das unfurling the Tricolor here. Speaking at an event at the Morabadi ground, Das thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for revoking Article 370 that gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir and making India “one nation”.
“In the last five years, poverty has declined in the state. As per a UNDP report, Jharkhand is on top of declining poverty. Poverty was declining at a rate of 4.8 per cent. “The state government has launched the Krishi Ashirwad scheme to help farmers who will get Rs 5,000 per acre of land for cultivation. Under the Ayushman Bharat scheme, 57 lakh of the 68 lakh families will get benefits in the state,” said Das.

Happy Independence Day! “The relations between India

Happy Independence Day.” The post also carried a line in Hindi wishing the people of India happy Independence Day. Last month, Israel’s ruling Likud party put up 10-storey high posters of Modi with Netanyahu on the sides of the party headquarters in Tel Aviv, as part of its campaign for the September 17 snap polls. Kerala flood toll hits 93; over 2.24 lakh in camps
Malappuram district with over 54,000 people has the largest number of people in the camps IANS, THIRUVANANTHAPURAM
T
he heavy rains that lashed Kerala over the last few days have lessened in intensity, even as the toll rose to 93 while over 2.24 lakh displaced people were in relief camps, the state government has said. All the 14 districts in the state, except Kollam, have people taking shelter in over 1,600 relief camps. Malappuram district with over 54,000 people has the largest number of people in the camps. Earlier in the day, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan told the media that compared to last year’s floods which ravaged the entire state, the intensity this time is not that bad and has affected fewer districts. “In a big relief to those engaged in rescue efforts, the rains today appear to have come down,” he said. The worst-affected areas are Meppadi in Wayanad and Kavalapara in Malappuram. Various rescue teams are working hard to recover bodies of those trapped. “As of now, eight people are still missing in Meppadi and with the rains subsiding, the rescue works are going on well. However, more rains are predicted in the coming days. All should be on high alert and be receptive to warnings,” Vijayan said.

Earlier in the day, former Congress chief Rahul Gandhi, who is the MP from Wayanad, reached Kozhikode and drove first to Kavalapara and visited a church where 360 people were taking shelter. He listened to their woes and assured them of all possible help. Gandhi will be touring Wayanad on Monday where he is expected to visit a few relief camps and affected areas. Meanwhile, Vijayan expressed anguish at the manner in which some sections are spreading rumours about contributions to the Chief Minister’s Distress Relief Fund. “This fund will be used only for
BRIEFS Maharashtra to seek Rs 6,813 crore in aid the needs of the affected and not for anything else. Knowing well about this, it’s unfortunate that some negative campaigns are currently on... what we have found out is that the origin of this is from outside our state. The media also has a role in this to ensure that these anti-social measures are curbed,” he said. “We have not yet asked for funds from the Centre and they are providing us all the support for
the ongoing relief and rescue work,” added Vijayan. Leader of Opposition Ramesh Chennithala told the media that he has called on everyone to contribute to the fund generously. “The maximum deaths - 18 were reported from Wayanad, while Malappuram, Palakkad, Idukki, and Kozhikode have also reported casualties”, Vijayan told reporters.
Army, Navy rev up rescue ops in flood-hit states NEW DELHI: Emergency response teams of the Indian Army and Navy have been relentlessly spearheading rescue and relief operations in Maharashtra, and the southern states helping thousands stranded due to severe flood situation following heavy rain that lashed over the past week. Several districts in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu have seen rivers breach their banks, reservoirs touch danger limits and landslides. However, the India Meteorological
Department has predicted rainfall might slowdown from Sunday. “A wellmarked low pressure area lies over northern parts of Saurashtra and Kutch. Intensity of rainfall over Gujarat, Kerala and Karnataka is like-
ly to reduce from Sunday,” said the Met.Indian Navy officials informed on Sunday that at least 12 emergency response teams have been rushed for help to Sangli district alone in Maharashtra.Nearly 100 people have died in the continuous heavy rain and flood that ravaged these four states. Heavy rains were also reported in Saurashtra and Kutch of Gujarat. “The teams, equipped with rubber inflatable boats, are working in Angliwadi, Haripur, Akashwani, Kolhapur and Irwin Bridge areas of Sangli.
MUMBAI: Maharashtra would seek Rs 6,813 crore central aid to tackle the flood-induced crisis, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said. The proposal would be forwarded to the Centre soon, he said and added, till then the state would use its own corpus for the purpose. “A committee of experts will be set up shortly to recommend measures if the state again witnessed the kind of rainfall it received in the last four days,” Fadnavis said.
Karnataka seeks Rs 3,000-cr relief
BENGALURU: Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa on Saturday sought Rs 3,000-crore aid from the central government for relief works in the state’s 14 flood-hit districts in the northwest and coastal regions, battered by heavy monsoon rains since August 1. “I sought Rs 3,000-crore central aid for relief works as heavy monsoon rains and floods in the state’s 14 districts across the northwest, central and coastal regions have caused 24 deaths and damaged about 14,000 houses during the last 10 days,” Yediyurappa said.

kipper Virat Kohli scored his second consecutive hundred to lead India to a seriesclinching victory in the third ODI against West Indies at the Queen’s Park Oval. Chasing a stiff revised 255-run target on Duckworth-Lewis method on Wednesday, Kohli scored unbeaten 114 and was ably supported by Shreyas Iyer to guide India to a comfortable six-wicket win which translated into a 2-0 series victory in the three-match rubber. Earlier in the day, Chris Gayle playing in probably his last ODI smashed 72 runs to help Windies post a competitive 240/7 in the rain-curtailed match after they elected to bat. Gayle, whose jersey had the number 301 on its back as a nod towards the number of ODIs he has played, was congratulated by the Indian players and given a standing ovation

by the crowd as he walked off in what could be his final ODI. However, after the match, the 39year-old made it clear that he has not retired yet. Chasing 255, India lost opener Rohit Sharma (10) in the third over. However, Shikhar Dhawan and Kohli rose to the occasion and took
Cricket fraternity in shock over VB Chandrasekhar's death NEW DELHI: Condolences poured in on Friday for former India cricketer V.B. Chandrasekhar who committed suicide a day ago in Chennai. A news report quoted Chandrasekhar's family member as saying that the 57-year-old was upset over the losses incurred while running a cricket league team and thus he committed suicide on Thursday. He owned a team called VB Kanchi Veerans in the Tamil Nadu cricket league and was also running a cricket coaching centre. The report said that his body was found hanging from the ceiling fan in his bedroom. "BCCI regrets to inform that former India opener VB Chandrasekhar is no more. Our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and his fans," tweeted the Indian cricket board while offering their condolences. "Deeply saddened and shocked to know about the demise of my good friend VB Chandrasekhar. Heartfelt condolences to his family. May his soul RIP," wrote VVS Laxman. "Terrible news...VB..too soon. Shocking! Heartfelt condolences to his family and friends," said Anil Kumble. "Sad day and a big loss to the cricket family. Rest in Peace VB," tweeted Stephen Fleming. My deepest condolences to the family," said Suresh Raina."Very shocking to hear VB Chandrashekhar Indian cricketer is no more...very sad news...very young to go...rest in peace VB...Big loss, condolences to the family," Harbhajan Singh tweeted. Chandrasekhar, who is survived by his wife and two daughters, represented India in seven ODIs between 1988 and 1990. He was a Tamil Nadu great who played a key role in the state's triumph in the 1987-88 season with 551 runs - the third-highest behind Brijesh Patel and Robin Singh. Chandrasekhar was a batsman who blasted a 56-ball century - the then fastest hundred in India's firstclass competition in the Irani Cup tie against Rest of India after Tamil Nadu's victory in March 1988.
INDIA 256/4 (Virat Kohli 114*, Shreyas Iyer 65; Fabien Allen 2/40) bt WEST INDIES 240/7 (Chris Gayle 72, Evin Lewis 43; Khaleel Ahmed 3/68)
the Men in Blue to 91 in the 12th over before the opener became Fabien Allen’s victim. Soon after, Rishabh Pant once again threw away his wicket by playing a rash shot, getting a first-ball duck.
PORT OF SPAIN: Rookie wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant’s poor show with the willow continued unabated as he got out for a golden duck in the third and final ODI against the West Indies, drawing the fans’ ire for his lack of patience. Pant, 21, has so far had a forgettable Caribbean tour, managing scores of 0, 4, 65, 20, 0 in the T20 and ODI series, though India won both the rubbers. In the third ODI, Pant threw away his wicket while trying to send Fabien Allen out of the park, only to see his mistimed hoick land in the hands of Keemo Paul in mid-off. What made the dismissal look worse was that it came off the first delivery that Pant faced. “Pant is throwing away the wickets, what an overrated player,” wrote fan. —IANS
However, that didn’t disturb Kohli’s rhythm. Also, he found an able support in Iyer who played with utmost ease and maturity and scored his second consecutive fifty and more importantly stitched a 120-run stand with his skipper for the fourth wicket, taking the team near the target. What was more impressive was the way he took the pressure of Kohli which allowed the India runmachine play without any pressure. Iyer’s 41-ball 65 was studded with five sixes and three boundaries. When the 24-year-old was dismissed, the Men in Blue needed 43 more runs from 40 balls but Kedar Jadhav (198) made sure there was no twist in the tale. He raised an unbeaten 44-run stand for the sixth wicket and took India across the line. Earlier, Gayle and opening partner Evin Lewis started slow with the first over bowled by Bhuvneshwar Kumar being maiden.

were four other candidates who looked to compete with the current coach. With Phil Simmons excusing himself from the race, Hesson, Moody, Robin Singh and Lalchand Rajput were the other candidates
interviewed by the CAC. Former Sunrisers Hyderabad head coach Tom Moody had already been rejected last time (in 2017) and it was believed that former Kiwi coach Hesson would be the one giving Shastri a tough fight as he has the credential to match Shastri's achievements. Shastri's performance with the Indian team saw the former allrounder being given his third term at the helm. With the team playing West Indies at present, Shastri connected with the committee over Skype. India skipper Virat Kohli had already made his feelings about Shastri to remain as coach.

Previously, Acting Director Ken Cuccinelli directed the agency to continue operating in Guatemala City, Guatemala; Mexico City, Mexico; and San Salvador, El Salvador, as part of a wholeof-government approach to address the crisis at the southern border. While retaining these seven international offices, USCIS plans to close the remaining thirteen international field offices and three district offices between now and August 2020. The first planned closures are the field offices in Monterrey, Mexico, and Seoul, South Korea, at the end of September. These organizational changes will allow more effective allocation of USCIS resources to support, in part, backlog reduction efforts.

Having Good Balance in Life is a Critical Componment of Healthy Aging BY A STAFF WRITER CHICAGO, IL- Having good balance is a critical component of healthy aging. Everyday activities like reaching for your coffee cup, bending down to pick up the paper, putting on your shoes, and getting up from a chair require subtle shifts in your body’s weight distribution. A healthy sense of balance allows you to hold your position or move at will during these weight fluctuations without falling. Gravity is constantly pulling you downward, giving you the tendency to fall, but your ability to balance prevents this from happening. Balance control is a complex physiological process and, just as with muscles, if you don’t use it, you lose it. As the body ages, muscle strength, joint range of motion, and reaction time all decrease. These factors can have a negative effect on an older person’s balance control and may lead to balance dysfunction - a factor linked to falls among the elderly. Falls from poor balance can cause serious, and even life-threatening, injuries. In fact, according to the CDC, accidental falls are the leading cause of death among older adults. Each year, one in three adults over the age of 65 falls, and the risk of falling increases proportionately with age - at 80 years, over half of seniors fall annually. Recovery from a fall can sometimes take at least a year in a long-term facility, with some patients never returning to their home. Among this age group, falls are the number one cause of fractures, hospital admissions for trauma, loss of independence, and injury deaths. Most of the fractures caused by falling are in the arm, hand, ankle, spine, pelvis, and hip, with hip fractures being one of the most serious types of fall injury, often resulting in long-term functional impairment, nursing home admission, and increased mortality - One out of five hip fracture patients dies within a year of their injury. In fact, falls account for 25% of all hospital admissions, and 40% of all nursing home admissions - 40% of those admitted to nursing homes do not return to independent living; 25% die within a year. These statistics are pretty grim -
but don’t for a minute think that there’s nothing you can do about it or that it won’t happen to you. Perhaps you believe that if you limit your activities and become even more sedentary that your chances of falling will decrease (not true!). If you think you can avoid falling as long as you stay at home, know this: The majority of all falls take place inside the home. Those who do fall are two-to three- times more likely to fall again, and many people who fall, even if they are not seriously injured, develop a fear of falling. Injuries from falls, reduced mobility and activity, and the fear of falling can significantly reduce your quality of life, making you dependent on others and taking away your freedom to move and live independently. But here’s the good news: Falls are preventable. Falling is not an inevitable result of aging, and there are steps you can take to improve your balance and decrease your chances of falling. Muscle strength and flexibility, which are an imperative part of maintaining good balance, decrease with age, especially for sedentary adults, but these can be partially restored with the right physical therapy program. Studies have shown that attention to certain risk factors, such as impaired balance, can significantly reduce rates of falling. Considerable
evidence indicates that the most effective fall reduction programs involve systematic fall risk assessment and targeted interventions. Additional research reveals that a physical therapist-prescribed exercise program targeting balance and strength can be effective in improving a number of balance and related outcomes in older people with mild balance impairment. Physical Therapy Solutions is the only facility in the northwest suburbs of Chicago with a comprehensive balance and fall risk program along with a strengthening program. Assisted with a medical history from your doctor, we can perform specific tests to determine your ability to maintain your balance as well as your risk of falling. Our computerized equilibrium tests can evaluate the sensory and motor parts of your balance system. Sensory tests assess inner ears, eyes and sense of touch in your feet and joints that contribute to balance control. Our motor tests will measure your ability to execute coordinated movements, both voluntary and involuntary, to maintain your balance. All of these tests will help define the cause of your balance problem and are the foundation of devising a unique, individualized program for you. We utilize a state-of-the-art balance machine and our balance therapy programs have a 98% balance improvement success rate. Rupangi Patel PT, Co-founder/CEO of Physical Therapy Solutions Group, is a physical therapist with more than 32 years of experience gleaned over two continents. She has been serving the Northwest suburban area since 1990 and she opened her own clinic in 2005. Rupangi is skilled in evaluating and treating various orthopedic and neurological conditions and has expertise in vestibular rehabilitation. She has undergone extensive training in the treatment of patients with balance and mobility ailments, with a particular focus on dizziness. Rupangi and her team of eight therapists have helped thousands of patients get back to enjoying their daily living. Car Wash Workers Sue Boss Who Underpaid for Years
BY A STAFF WRITER ELIZABETH, NJ- A group of immigrant car wash workers are filing a lawsuit against their employer alleging they were underpaid for years. The eight workers say Caribbean Car Wash in Elizabeth paid less than $5 per hour and denied overtime despite the employees working 11-hour days six or seven days a week, according to a statement from their attorney, Steven Arenson of New York. “Unfortunately, many workers don’t know their rights and are afraid of being fired if they speak up,” Arenson said in a statement Monday. “The law protects workers who have been paid illegally, regardless of their immigration status, and New Jersey’s new law is designed to protect precisely the kind of low-wage, vulnerable workforce exploited in this case.” The suit seeks unpaid wages and unpaid overtime compensation. Last year, 106 car wash workers (some of whom worked in Elizabeth) split an $8.5 million settlement after they sued to recover lost wages. Many of those workers had been paid $4 an hour for years, said Arenson, who also worked on that case. New Jersey’s current minimum hourly wage is $10, and will rise to $15 by 2024. Last week, Lt. Gov. Sheila Oliver signed into law a bill enhancing punishments on employers who don’t pay. Among other measures, the bill allows workers to seek unpaid wages going back six years, as opposed to two under the old law.
Cops Seeks to Charges Against Driver Involved in Deadly Bicycle Crash
Largest Immigration Raids in Decade 680 Undocumented Workers Arrested BY A STAFF WRITER MONTON, MS - A day after U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers arrested nearly 700 people in sweeping raids at several food-processing plants in Mississippi, officials said Thursday that nearly half of those detained had already been released. A total of 680 people were arrested, according to ICE, in what has been described as “record setting” raids in terms of size and scope. But a statement released Thursday by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Mississippi said that approximately 300 of them had been released. “Preliminarily, it appears that approximately 30 detained aliens were released yesterday on humanitarian grounds at the individual sites where they were initially encountered,” the statement said. “[A]nother 270 detained aliens were released after being processed by [Homeland Security Investigations] at the National Guard base in Pearl and returned to the place where they were originally encountered.” “They were placed into proceedings before the federal immigration courts and will have their day in court at a later date,” ICE spokesman Bryan Cox said. The procedures ICE followed in this week’s raids stood in contrast to President Trump’s “zero tolerance” policy of separating migrant children from their parents at the U.S. border. That policy
came under widespread and harsh criticism. Included among those released in the Mississippi raids were 18 juveniles, with the youngest being 14 years old, the news agency said, quoting Jere Miles, a special agent in charge of ICE Homeland Security Investigations in New Orleans. The statement explained that detainees were “asked when they arrived at the processing center whether they had any children who were at school or childcare and needed to be picked up.” It said cellphones were made available for them “to make arrangements for the care of their children or other dependents.” “[I]f HSI encountered two alien parents with minor children at home, HSI released one of the parents on humanitarian grounds and returned that individual to the place from which they
were arrested,” the statement said. “HSI similarly released any single alien parent with minor children at home on humanitarian grounds and physically returned that person to the place where he or she was originally detained.” “Based on these procedures, it is believed that all children were with at least one of their parents as of last night,” it added. A plant owned by Illinois-based poultry producer Koch Foods in Morton, Miss., was among five plants targeted in Wednesday’s raids, which involved a total of about 600 ICE officers. The company said its Morton plant employs more than 1,000 people. Koch said that after Wednesday’s raid it was forced to temporarily halt production. It said it wasn’t yet sure how many of its employees had been detained by ICE.
BY A STAFF WRITER BROOKLYN, NY -- Cop sources said Monday they plan to throw the book at motorist Umar Baig, 18, who they blame in the death of beloved 52-year-old cyclist Jose Alzorriz. Sources said cops are determining how fast Baig was driving when he blew the light in hope of hitting him with the harshest charges possible. Cops and district attorneys in New York have long been hesitant to bring homicide or assault charges against drivers who injure or kill someone but are not intoxicated and stay at the scene of a crash. To make criminal charges stick, prosecutors must demonstrate that Baig exhibited “gross deviation” from how a normal person would behave behind the wheel, Conner said. Baig, of Rego Park, Queens, was not high or drunk when he blasted his Dodge Charger through the light on Coney Island Ave. and Avenue L and pushed a Honda Pilot SUV into Alzorriz, said police. The cyclist had only a splitsecond to react. Sources said cops are determining how fast Baig was driving when he blew the light in hope of hitting him with the harshest charges possible. Conner said prosecutors could show gross deviation by proving Baig committed two or more moving violations — a principle of New York case law in crash cases known to prosecutors as the “rule of two.

BY A STAFF WRITER CHARLOTTE, NC- A GoFundMe page has been set up for 24-year-old Indian student Vivek Pathipati, who was hit and killed late Aug. 2 in Charlotte, North Carolina. He “was either standing or walking in the right lane ... near the white dashed divider lines” when a van driver hit him in the 9800 block (University City Boulevard), the Charlotte Observer quoted from a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department news release. Pathipati “was not in a designated crosswalk or near an intersection,” police said in the release, “Speed is not suspected to be a factor in this crash.” He was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver stayed at the scene and was not hurt, added the report. The GoFundMe page for Pathipati, who was pursuing his M.S. from the University of North Carolina, Charlotte, has raised over $41,000 towards its goal of $50,000. “Vivek leaves behind his devastated parents, friends and relatives. A strong determination to do his master’s and to fulfill his parent’s dream ended with an unfortunate tragedy,” read the page that has been set up by his first cousin, Manoj Maddipatla.

(L-R) Kiran Khurana, Dr. Divya Khurana & Dr. Jasvir Khurana
BY A STAFF WRITER WILLOW GROVE, PA. – A small plane crashed in the backyard of a suburban Philadelphia home in the morning hours of Aug. 8, killing a husband and wife and their 19-year-old daughter, who were the only people on board. The plane went down around in Willow Grove, about 30 miles north of Philadelphia, shortly after taking off from Northeast Philadelphia Airport en route to Columbus, Ohio. Officials said that wasn’t the final destination but couldn’t elaborate. The plane hit several trees before it stopped, and the debris was spread across four backyards, said Upper Moreland Police Chief Michael Murphy. The victims were identified as 60-year-old Jasvir Khurana, his 54-year-old wife Divya Khurana and their 19-year old daughter Kiran, all from Lower Merion Township, in
the Philadelphia suburbs. Jasvir Khurana was a professor of pathology and laboratory medicine at Temple University’s Katz School of Medicine, where he studied bone disease. His wife, Divya Khurana, was a pediatric neurologist at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children and a professor at Drexel University College of Medicine. No one on the ground was injured and no homes were damaged, which Murphy called “a miracle.” The National Transportation Safety Board arrived at the scene in the afternoon, and their investigation is underway, according to Adam Gerhardt, an air traffic investigator with the agency. There is no indication the pilot made a distress call and the plane was only in the air about three minutes before the crash, Gerhardt said.
