US NEWS

Trumping Trump’s unpredictability Having realized by now the US President’s unpredictability, India has been going for meetings with him well prepared since 2008, are set to rise with New Delhi lining up defense deals worth $10 billion over the next few years, which would obviously please the US president.

IANS, NEW DELHI

G

iven US President Donald Trumps unpredictability, India has been well prepared to meet and match his every mood, whether on trade or on Kashmir, as the successful conclusion and outcome of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s meetings with him show. Even before his meeting with PM Modi in Osaka on the sidelines of the G20 in June, President Trump had taken to Twitter to vent irritation over India hiking its tariffs on US agricultural and industrial imports in retaliation to the US raising tariff on steel and aluminium imports from India. “Unacceptable”, said the president, demanding that the tariffs be withdrawn. Having realized by now the US President’s unpredictability, India has been going for meetings with him well prepared, and preferring to look at the larger picture in ties rather than getting bogged down with his utterances. In a pointer to the burgeoning trade ties and just how mutually beneficial the relationship is -India-US bilateral trade reached $142 billion in 2018, witnessing a seven-fold increase since 2001 -and is expected to jump to $500 billion in five years. Thus, rather than taking umbrage at the president’s testy language, Indian officials have

Prime Minister Narendra Modi with US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in France. (Photo: IANS)

been working with their US counterparts behind the scenes to soothe over the ruffles in ties. And it has worked. For in his meeting with PM Modi in Biarritz, France, on the sidelines of the G7, President Trump did not mention his irritation over any trade issue. Being a hugely successful businessman, the US president understands the language of buy and sell and profit well, and anything that benefits his country is always a good thing. On Kashmir, President Trump gave India some tense moments when he said in July that he would

like to mediate on the issue, and that PM Modi had suggested this to him during their Osaka meeting. India denied that PM Modi ever said such a thing and stressed that Kashmir is a bilateral matter. India is now well prepared to tackle the US president’s unpredictable utterances. New Delhi now says just enough to convey its message, without going into any kind of quibbling over the wordings of what Trump has said, and prefers to work with US administration officials who know just how important the ties are. Since Trump would be happy

with anything that stands to benefit his country, India has already promised to buy more shale oil, with $4 billion worth of imports already in the pipeline. Indian ventures in the US are also creating jobs in the US. A CII report last year said that Indian companies have created more than 113,000 jobs in the US and invested nearly $18 billion in the country. In the defense arena too, India has managed to soothe over US concerns over purchase of Russian S-400 Triumf missile systems. India’s defense purchases from the US, which stand at $ 18 billion

India has already bought C-17 and C-130J transport planes, the P-8i maritime reconnaissance aircraft, Harpoon missiles, Apache and Chinook helicopters and M777 howitzers. India is set to buy 10 more of the state-of-the-art P-8 aircraft, armed with Harpoon missiles and torpedoes, and more MH-60 Romeo helicopters and Apache attack helicopters. These deals are beneficial to the US, and the president understands this well. So, when the two leaders met in Biarritz, there was affability in the air, and the US president voiced confidence in India’s ability to manage Kashmir, and most importantly Pakistan. It is not just India that has been studying the US president’s moves. Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan had tried his luck too during his meeting with Trump on July 22 in Washington. With his country having virtually nothing to offer in terms of business and relying heavily on US aid, Imran Khan had taken to flattery and played the Afghan card to win over the US president, and made him utter his offer to mediate on Kashmir. Pakistan thought it was victory, and hoped to build on it. But it has come to naught.

N

ew York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, who made feminism and women’s equality the main focus of her presidential campaign, has dropped out of the race for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination, leaving 20 candidates still in the running. In a video posted on her official Twitter account on Wednesday, Gillibrand announced the end of her campaign, which never aroused much interest among Democratic voters; the latest example of the lack of excitement generated by her candidacy was

the fact that she failed to qualify for the party’s next televised debate, Efe news reported. “After more than eight incredible months, I am ending my presidential campaign,” she said. “I know this isn’t the result we wanted. We wanted to win this race,” she said. “But it’s important to know when it’s not your time, and to know how you can best serve your community and country.” Gillibrand thanked her supporters and asked them to “now, let’s go beat Donald Trump and win back the Senate”. President Donald Trump, who has sneered at the latest casualties

in the race to seize power from him in 2020, was quick to react to Gillibrand’s post on Twitter, saying that it was “a sad day for the Democrats”. “I’m glad they never found out that she (Gillibrand) was the one I was really afraid of,” Trump said. With Gillibrand’s exit, there are 20 Democrats left in the field. The New York senator is the first of six female Democratic presidential candidates to drop out of the race, leaving three other women senators - Elizabeth Warren (Massachusetts), Kamala Harris (California) and Amy Klobuchar (Minnesota) - in the running, as well as Congress-

woman Tulsi Gabbard (Hawaii) and activist Marianne Williamson. The party next debate will take place on September 12 in Houston, Texas. Only 10 candidates have met both the criteria of obtaining a minimum number of unique campaign donors and a minimal percentage of support in the polls that are required to be on stage in

Houston, including three of the five women contestants (Warren, Harris and Klobuchar). Rounding out the list are former Vice President Joe Biden, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, New Jersey Senator Cory Booker, South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg, former Secretary of Housing Julian Castro, former Texas Representative Beto O’Rourke and businessman Andrew Yang.

India’s push for big FDI reforms

The cabinet also eased the 30 per cent local sourcing norm in single-brand retail

I

n a major reform push, the Union Cabinet on August 28 eased foreign direct investment (FDI) norms in several sectors, including approval of 100 per cent FDI in coal mining and contractual manufacturing. In another major development, the cabinet, in its meeting during the day, also decided to allow 26 per cent FDI in the digital media segment through the approval route. “It has been decided to permit 100 per cent FDI under automatic route for sale of coal, for coal mining activities including associated processing infrastructure subject to provisions of Coal Mines Act, 2015 and the Mines and Minerals Act, 1957,” an official statement said. “Associated processing infrastructure” would include coal washeries, crushing, coal handling, and separation (magnetic and nonmagnetic).

As per the present FDI policy, 100 per cent FDI under automatic route is allowed for coal and lignite mining for captive consumption by power projects, iron and steel and cement units and other eligible activities permitted under and subject to applicable laws and regulations. Further in a bid to provide clarity on contractual manufacturing, the cabinet also permitted 100 per

cent FDI in the sector through the automatic route. The existing FDI policy provides for 100 per cent FDI under automatic route in the manufacturing sector but there was no specific provision for contractual manufacturing. The Union Cabinet allowed 100 per cent foreign direct investment (FDI) in contractual manufacturing through the automatic route.

NEW DELHI: Eager to see customers at its first India retail store, Apple on Thursday declared India its next growth hub — first by launching an exclusive online store and then its branded retail outlet later -- as the Narendra Modi cabinet eased the 30 per cent local sourcing norm in single-brand retail (SBRT). The Cupertino-based iPhone maker said it appreciates the support and hard work done by Prime Minister Narendra Modi who is aiming to make India one of the world’s greatest economies.

“Subject to the provisions of the FDI policy, foreign investment in ‘manufacturing’ sector is under automatic route. Manufacturing activities may be conducted either by the investee entity or through

“We love our customers in India and we’re eager to serve them online and in-store with the same experience and care that Apple customers around the world enjoy,” Apple said. “We appreciate the support and hard work by Prime Minister Modi and his team to make this possible and we look forward to one day welcoming customers to India’s first Apple retail store,” the company added. ‘Showing Chidambaram evidence won’t be right’ IANS, NEW DELHI

Intelligence: Pak commandos in Kutch KANDLA: A high alert has been sounded in Gujarat state and authorities directed to maintain tight security, including on ships berthed at Kandla port, in the wake of intelligence inputs warning of Pakistani commandos trained in underwater attacks having entered the Gulf of Kutch area. The Port Trust authorities, in a message, said the Pakistan-trained commandoes are believed to have entered the Gulf of Kutch through the Harami Nala Creek Area. “It is therefore directed to take utmost measures of security and prevent any untoward situation in Gujarat state, all ships at DPT (Deendayal Port Trust) to take utmost security measures and maintain anti-terror watch, and be alert.” Signed by the Signal Superintendent of Deendayal Port Trust, the message also directed all shipping authorities to inform their vessels berthed at Kandla and those expected to enter the port to remain alert and “maintain terror watch” and report any suspicious activity to the nearest coast guard station, marine police station and the port control. —IANS

F

ormer Finance Minister P. Chidambaram’s plea to see the evidence before it is placed before the court will adversely affect several cases involving economic offenders and terror funding, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told the Supreme Court on Thursday. Mehta, representing the Enforcement Directorate, was arguing before a bench headed by Justice Banumathi. He contended that if the court accepts Chidambaram’s plea then it is bound to adversely affect other cases including those of

P. Chidambaram

Vijay Mallya, Mehul Choksi, Nirav Modi, Shardha chit fund, terror funding and others. “Chidambaram’s submission to confront him with the evidence

before the same is placed before court is preposterous. It will lead to exposing evidences and witnesses in similar cases at an investigating stage,” Mehta submitted before the court. He further argued that at precomplaint stage the prosecution is entitled to oppose bail based on material in its possession, and whether the accused’s reply to its queries was evasive or not, is a decision within the ambit of the probe agency. “Confronting the accused with evidence who is free, it is an open invitation to tamper the evidence...cannot show the material

even to the court, due to the sensitivity of the material,” submitted Mehta. He said that if the evidence was shown to the accused then he will immediately erase the details of the money trail. He referred to Chidambaram as an individual having resources and knowledge on the issues. Maintaining the secrecy of the material in possession of the agency is vital, Mehta said adding it is best to confront the accused with evidence when he is in custody. And, if accused is confronted with evidence at a pre anticipatory bail stage, then this would destroy the case.

‘Security must to make India $5 tn economy’ IANS, NEW DELHI

H

ome Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday stressed on the importance of maintaining internal and external security to achieve Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s goal of making India a $5 trillion economy. “Modiji wants to make India a $5 trillion economy and put it among the world’s top three. But economic progress is not possible without securing the country.

There is a need to maintain external security and law and order in states,” Shah said during the 49th Foundation Day celebrations of the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D). He said over 34,000 personnel had sacrificed their lives to maintain law and order within the country and urged policemen to carry forward the good work done by their colleagues. Shah emphasized on beginning a “consultative” procedure in the

Home Minister Amit Shah

country to bring about specific changes in the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) and Indian Penal Code (IPC). “There has been no change in CrPC and IPC for long. We need to

go forward for this. A consultative procedure should be started across the country for this purpose.” The Minister said a report on suggestion made in this regard should be sent to the Home Ministry.

Chidambaram’s arrest: A TV extravaganza

The highly televised drama of walls being scaled by cops betrays a purpose much larger than the simple arrest of Chidambaram SAEED NAQVI, NEW DELHI

B

ollywood stunt artistes would end up with fractured bones if they tried to imitate CBIs field staff scaling the high walls of former Home Minister, P. Chidambaram’s Jor Bagh bungalow with orders to arrest him. The swoop, in full glare of the media, would have unnerved the “D” company, or El Chapos but they would have dug tunnels in the loo, predictable means of escape. A sophisticated mind like Chidambaram’s, cool and calculating, contrived cunning passages to the Congress office for a press conference that evening. It was not a simple arrest. That would have required barely two constables. It was mounted as a TV extravaganza for the entire nation -and beyond -- so that they would be in awe of the power of the state. It requires mastery of the electronic media for perfect choreography on such a scale. Consider the contrast of Sonia Gandhi making a weak tepid intervention. “Rajiv Gandhi also won with two-thirds majority”

Former Finance Minister P. Chidambaram arrives at Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court in New Delhi. (Photo: IANS)

but he did not indulge in “actions like this” or words to that effect. Chidambaram’s arrest has come as a shock to the party which has only one of its wings operating coherently -- its legal team, particularly the

Kapil Sibal-Abhishek Manu Singhvi duet. Let the party now prepare itself for more tantalizing television. Open rebellion in Madhya Pradesh is on the cards, where Jyotiraditya Scindia may change sides as

a conscientious objector along with a number of MLAs. Should that happen, Rajasthan cannot be far behind. Bhupinder Singh Hooda’s rebellion in Haryana will unnerve the

Gandhi family that much more because Robert Vadra owes a few to him. It is generally not recognized that the mushroom growth of the electronic media is a gift of neo-liberal economic policies inaugurated in 1991 by Finance Minister Manmohan Singh. It was in admiration for these economic policies that Sonia Gandhi made him Prime Minister. Chidambaram was Finance Minister in this sequence. The Chidambaram drama draws inspiration from another genre of western media. Color revolutions, the Syrian uprising, numerous examples, most recently, the continuing protests in Hong Long. Let us consider Hong Kong, for example. The point is this: supposing scores of western journalists had not descended on the territory with their multiple camera units, would the protests have continued? Against this perspective, the highly televised drama of walls being scaled by cops betrays a purpose much larger than the simple arrest of Chidambaram.

Aadhaar linkage with social media is troublesome Phone number and email verifications instead of Aadhaar linkage are the best immediately available options which will take care of the fake news disease SANJAY KAUSHIK, NEW DELHI

A

s a debate rages on over the floating idea of linking Facebook accounts to Aadhaar, it is time we ponder if this is the only option or there are other better solutions that could not just secure the digital and social media lives of citizens but also ensure their privacy and safety. The main intention of this much discussed about linkage is just one -- to stop fake news which gets viral and heavily propagated via social media in almost no time. In my humble opinion, linking Indian people’s Aadhaar with social media is not a panacea

for the fake news plague. Fake news can be curbed on social media by taking other suitable measures. My reason against the linkage is that since Aadhaar has almost all information related to our bank accounts we must avoid treading that path. In an earlier instance, there was a decision to link the Aadhaar with mobile connections but later the decision was revoked due to fears of misuse of Aadhaar data. Still, even in that linkage, the solace was that most of the mobile network companies are Indian and they have servers located in India itself. Facebook and WhatsApp, etc. have their offices in other coun-

tries and the government has almost no control over them. As per Indian government intent all Indian data must be kept within the country only but in this case, we would be going against that spirit of data localization and sending our data to international countries. This could also have severe ramifications on national security if there is any big breach. Also, we must understand a social media account is a private account of a person -- it necessarily does not have to be linked to a government database just for the sake of privacy -- linking with Aadhaar will be jeopardizing the independence and democratic

rights of the person for one never knows know that data may be misused by the companies or the government of the day. We all know how our privacy has already been compromised by Alexa, Google, Apple and products of other companies that can listen to even our drawing room and bedroom conversation and it has already been proved in several instances which have also been widely reported. Rather, as a country, we must focus on investing on research to develop the technology to save our virtual space and not open our data for any misuse.

Most of the folks and younger generation use social media from their phones. There are already norms that every phone number needs to be verified -- the need of the hour is to get them implemented more stringently on the ground. Phone verification in my opinion is a better idea. This will solve the issue at the source itself and privacy will also not be violated in any manner. So anyone who then peddles or spreads fake news can be held accountable by enforcement agencies in no time. This will take care of the concerns of the people as well as the government.

OBITUARY

AN ILLUSTRIOUS JOURNEY Arun Jaitley has left an imprint across the major turning points that the nation has experienced in its post-independent history AMIT KAPOOR AND CHIRAG YADAV, NEW DELHI

B

y the time Indira Gandhi declared the Emergency on June 26, 1975, Arun Jaitley had already proved himself to be a deft student leader in Delhi University (DU) after leading ABVP to victory and becoming the President of the student union a year ago. At a time when Congress had a stronghold over politics at every level including the university, his stature was particularly significant in student politics in India. So, it was unsurprising that he had delved into the thick of the protests against the suspension of civil liberties by Gandhi. On the morning the Emergency was imposed, he organized what he called “the only protest against the Emergency which took place that day in the whole country.” Over 200 people gathered and Jaitley was arrested. He remained imprisoned for 19 months. Inside Tihar Jail, Jaitley was in charge of the kitchen where he found convicts who made parathas for breakfast and convinced a warden to allow meat to be made for dinner. While reflecting on those days, he later said that “we all left prison looking rather plumper.” Such was the charm that Jaitley carried since his younger days, which swayed even his adversaries in his favor. By the time Jaitley left Tihar Jail in January 1977, he had become a prominent figure of opposition politics, and became the all-India secretary for ABVP. His precocious renown had grown to a point that Atal Bihari Vajpayee had wanted him to run for the 1977 Lok Sabha elections, but he failed to meet the minimum age criteria of 25 years. Nevertheless, he campaigned all over the country as the national convener of the Loktantrik Yuva Morcha, which was formed to campaign for the Janata Party. In a political space that was decisively occupied

Jaitley’s last rites held with full state honors NEW DELHI: The mortal remains of former Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, one of the veterans of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), were given the last rites with full state honors at the Nigambodh Ghat here on Sunday amid heavy rain, a day after he passed away. A virtual Who’s Who of the BJP and the Narendra Modi government, the legal fraternity and hundreds of common people were in attendance as the late leader’s son, Rohan Jaitley, performed the last rites. When the funeral pyre was being lit, it started pouring. Besides Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu, senior political leaders cutting

across the party lines reached the crematorium to pay their tributes to Jaitley. They included Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP Working President J.P. Nadda and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. Others were Chief Ministers Nitish Kumar of Bihar, B.S. Yediyurappa of Karnataka, Arvind Kejriwal of Delhi, Union Minister Smriti Irani and yoga guru Baba Ramdev. Prime Minister Modi, who was abroad, expressed grief over the demise via Twitter.

by Congress, Jaitley successfully led from the front to create a space for a political opposition for the first time in the country. The battles within the courtroom themselves kept him close to the political brass. A few prominent ones were when he fought the case for Indian Express against Indira Gandhi’s attacks on the paper for the negative coverage during the Emergency and when he aided Ram Jethmalani in the

Bofors investigations against Rajiv Gandhi. He also successfully defended Advani in court through the 1990s against charges for the demolition of the Babri Masjid and money-laundering scam in what the party patriarch termed “one of the most challenging periods of my life.” The lawyer in him never lost his political streak. When the BJP-led NDA came to power in 1999, the lawyerpolitician held several ministerial positions - first of information and broadcasting, and then of law and justice. He soon became the public face of BJP defending the government through a wide range of issues on prime-time television. He was a strategist who defined the political realities of today by shaping a formidable alternative to the party of Nehru and Gandhi and did so while building an everexpanding circle of friends and oodles of goodwill.

US, French envoys condole Jaitley’s death NEW DELHI: The Ambassadors of the US, France, China and Germany condoled the death of former Finance Minister Arun Jaitley. “It is with much sadness that we have learned of the passing of Arun Jaitley. He was a great statesman and a strong proponent of the US-India relationship. May he rest in peace,” tweeted US Ambassador to India Ken Juster. Sun Wei-

dong, Chinese envoy to India, said: “Sad to learn that former Finance Minister #ArunJaitley has passed away. My heartfelt condolences to the deceased and his family.” French Ambassador to India Alexandre Ziegler tweeted: “On behalf of France, I offer our heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of Arun Jaitley. —IANS

Q

ueen Elizabeth II on Wednesday approved UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s order to suspend Parliament in second week of September, just weeks before the Brexit deadline on October 31. Johnson’s surprise move to suspend Parliament prompted widespread criticism from the opposition amid accusations of a “coup” as it can prevent MPs from voting to block a possible no-deal Brexit. According to a statement from the Privy Council — a body of senior politicians who act as the Queen’s official advisers — the Queen approved the suspension of Parliament “no earlier than Monday 9th September and no later than Thursday 12th September” until October 14.

‘No decision yet on airspace closure’ ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi has made it clear that no decision has yet been taken to close the country’s airspace to India, Dawn news reported. Talking to reporters during a visit to the National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) on Wednesday, he dismissed as “speculative” all reports on the issue. “A decision to this effect will be taken after due consideration and looking into each and every aspect of the move through consultation,” Qureshi said.

No talks unless US back to n-deal: Iran TEHRAN: Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi ruled out the possibility of any negotiations between Tehran and Washington unless the latter is back to the Iranian 2015 nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), Press TV reported on Thursday. “No country would accept to enter negotiations while being under maximum pressure,” because doing so would mean “surrender,” Araqchi said on Wednesday. Araqchi added that talks with the US would take place within the framework of the JCPOA only when Washington lifts all of its sanctions against Iran, Xinhua reported. —IANS

The suspension comes just a week after MPs return from their summer recess and is intended for the government to hold a Queen’s Speech on October 14. In a letter to lawmakers, John-

‘Imran’s war rhetoric is ridiculous’ IANS, WASHINGTON

ndian-American Congressman Ro Khanna has said Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan needs to cool down his war rhetoric with India, calling it “absolutely ridiculous”. “Kashmir is an internal matter for India’s democracy and ... Imran Khan needs to cool his heated rhetoric and not escalate to a war or conflict,” Khanna, who recently joined the Pakistani Congressional Caucus, told members of the Indian-American community during an interaction in Freemont, California.

Ro Khanna (File Photo: Khanna Campaign/IANS)

“Imran Khan’s rhetoric of war with India is absolutely ridiculous,” said Khanna, who represents California’s 17th District.

The Pakistan Prime Minister and the country’s politicians have repeatedly attacked India in the wake of the abrogation of Article 370 that granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir. Khan has often threatened India of war and also claimed that New Delhi is likely to attempt a “false flag” or covert operation to divert attention from Kashmir. On Wednesday, Pakistan’s Railway Minister Sheikh Rasheed Ahmad said that he feels that a “full-fledged war” will be fought between India and Pakistan in October or November this year.

18 are known, according to Efe news. The House is therefore set to be suspended from September 10 till October 14. MPs will return to work on September 3 and Brexit, as Johnson has repeatedly said, will go ahead with or without a deal on October 31. The decision prompted immediate and fierce protest from political leaders in the opposition whereas the Conservative Party’s leadership played the move off as “normal government protocol”. House of Commons Speaker John Bercow said it was a “constitutional outrage”. The Speaker continued: “However it is dressed up, it is blindingly obvious that the purpose of (suspending Parliament) now would be to stop (MPs) debating Brexit and performing its duty in shaping a course for the country.”

Sikh pilgrims’ visa process by Sept 30 ISLAMABAD: Pakistani authorities have decided to complete the process of issuance of visas to Sikh pilgrims from India and around the world to attend the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev in Nankana Sahib, by September 30, the media reported on Thursday. The decision was taken during a meeting of the Religious Tourism and Heritage Committee (RTHC) chaired by Punjab province’s Governor Chaudhry Sarwar in Lahore on Wednesday, Dawn news reported. The Governor said that the visa process for the Sikh pilgrims would start on September 1. —IANS

he US government has said that it did not approve the offer of $20 million in aid to Brazil made by the G7 member nations to fight the devastating wildfires in the Amazon rainforest. “We didn’t agree to a G7 initiative that failed to include consultations with (Brazilian President) Jair Bolsonaro,” Garrett Marquis, the official spokesperson for the White House National Security Council, said in a Twitter post on Wednesday. “The most constructive way to assist with Brazil’s ongoing efforts is in coordination with the Brazilian government,” he said. “The US stands ready to assist Brazil in efforts

to combat fires in the Amazon.” French President Emmanuel Macron announced on Monday that G7 countries will earmark $20

million to help fight the massive fires raging across Amazonia, Efe news reported. However, Bolsonaro said the fol-

lowing day that he would only accept the aid if Macron retracted his statements calling the Brazilian leader a liar and suggesting the possibility of giving the Amazon “international status” to prevent its destruction, which Brazil took as an attack on its sovereignty. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has praised Bolsonaro’s handling of the fire crisis. “I have gotten to know President Bolsonaro well in our dealings with Brazil. He is working very hard on the Amazon fires and in all respects is doing a great job for the people of Brazil,” Trump wrote on Twitter on Tuesday. he Jammu and Kashmir government would fill 50,000 vacancies in various government departments in the next few months. This was announced by Governor Satya Pal Malik at a Press Conference held at Raj Bhavan this week. He urged the youth to come forward and participate actively in this recruitment process as this would be the largest single recruitment drive ever in Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh. He further announced that his government is working with various Central agencies to put together a scheme to provide a minimum support price for the apple crop in the state and that NAFED was willing to commit over Rs 5,000 Crore for procuring over 50 percent of apple production of the State. This would benefit over 7 lakh apple farmers. The Governor also announced that in order to provide relief to the people, it had been decided to open

The government has already announced opening of landline connections in the Kashmir valley. Referring to the recent situation in the Valley, the Governor mentioned that a number of important

decisions had recently been taken regarding Jammu and Kashmir. He observed that these decisions are historic and will open new vistas for the growth of all three regions e Jammu, Kashmir & Ladakh. The Governor mentioned that the decisions were taken keeping the interests of the people of Jammu & Kashmir in mind and to ensure that they benefit from the rapid economic growth happening in the rest of the country.

Cong slams Pak for using Rahul’s name in UN letter NEW DELHI: After Pakistan in its letter to the UN specifically quoted Rahul Gandhi as saying that “people are dying” in Kashmir, a visibly embarrassed Congress changed tack and instead of attacking the government, fiercely attacked Pakistan as the instigator of violence in the Valley, stressing that Kashmir is India’s internal issue. Gandhi, who is in his Wayanad parliamentary constituency, said in a series of tweets: “I disagree with this government on many issues. But let me make this absolutely clear: Kashmir is India’s internal issue and there is no room for Pakistan or any other foreign country to interfere in it. “There is violence in Jammu and Kashmir. There is violence because it is instigated and supported by Pakistan, which is known to be the prime supporter of terrorism across the world.” Pakistan, in its letter to the UN General Assembly, said that “Rahul Gandhi has noted ‘people are dying’ in Jammu and Kashmir, in light of events ‘going very wrong there’.” The letter has been doing the rounds on social media, and Pakistan has taken care to mention the name of Gandhi in it more than once to buttress its claim of human rights

No UNGA statement on Kashmir: J&K: SC issues notice to Centre, Spokesperson Maria Espinosa allows Sitaram Yechury to visit

RAWALPINDI: Continuing his attack on India in the wake of the abrogation of Article 370 that granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir, Pakistan Railway Minister Sheikh Rasheed Ahmad said that he feels that a full-fledged war will be fought between India and Pakistan in October or November this year. According to reports in the Pakistani media, Ahmad made this prediction at an event here organized to show solidarity with Kashmiris. “The time of the last battle for the liberation of Kashmir has arrived and this time the war with India will be full and final,” Ahmad said.

UNITED NATIONS: Although the President of the General Assembly (PGA), Maria Fernanda Espinosa, has met Pakistan’s Permanent Representative Maleeha Lodhi, she has not issued any statement on Kashmir, according to her Spokesperson Monica Grayley. Replying to a question on Tuesday from a Pakistani reporter about a statement from Espinosa, Grayley said, “The PGA has not made any statement on Kashmir today. What you probably have seen -- we have seen as well — is (about) the meeting she had yesterday with the Permanent Representative of Pakistan yesterday.”

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court issued a notice to the Centre in multiple petitions related to abrogation of Article 370. However, the Centre asked the court not to issue the notice, saying Article 370 had international and cross-border implications. Representing the Centre, Attorney General K.K. Venugopal said it was a very sensitive matter and whatever happened in the country over it was raked up at the United Nations. The court asked the Attorney General if that meant the Supreme Court won’t do its duty. The bench said it was aware of its duties and agreed to hear multiple petitions. —All stories from IANS

Answering queries from the media on Kashmir, ahead of their bilateral meeting, Prime Minister Modi, to a question on Trump’s offer to mediate on Kashmir, said: “All issues between India and Pakistan are bilateral, and we don’t want to trouble any nation over this. And I have faith... before 1947

we were one nation, and that if we sit together and discuss, we can find solutions between ourselves to our problems through dialogue.” To a question on whether his offer to mediate was still on the table, Trump said: “Well, I am here, and I have very good relations with both gentlemen (Modi and Pakistan PM Imran Khan), and I’m here. I feel they can do it by themselves, they’ve been doing it for a long time.” Earlier, asked if Kashmir would be discussed, Trump said he had discussed the issue with Modi during dinner on Sunday night. “Well, we spoke last night about Kashmir, and Prime Minister Modi really feels that he has it under control; and now when they speak with

A meeting that was expected to be over in 60 minutes spilled over to beyond 90 minutes. And when the two leaders emerged to address the press, it

was clear why. In his rather long opening address, Macron made it clear, point by point, exactly how similar French and Indian views had come to be on a range of regional, international and global issues and that the Indo-French partnership, already time tested, would continue to evolve into a very unique, robust and resilient relationship that could be a benchmark for other countries as well. Modi was content to watch as Macron undertook a strong defense of India and the Indian leader on the controversial issue of

French President Emmanuel Macron and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

the abrogation of Article 370 vis-àvis Jammu and Kashmir. In his address, Macron dwelt at length on how Modi had reassured him that the move, an entirely sovereign right of India, was crucial to combat terrorism.

‘Always wanted to be hero in Rohit’s Film’ Rohit is king of action-entertainment genre, says Ranveer IANS, MUMBAI

A

ctor Ranveer Singh, who worked with director Rohit Shetty in last year’s blockbuster film Simmba, says he always wanted to be his hero. “Rohit is the king of the actionentertainment and the masala genre. I always wanted to be his hero and when I got this opportunity, I gave it my all. Both of us are entertainers at our core - we like entertaining the audiences to the hilt,” Ranveer said. In the film, Ranveer played a cop named Sangram Bhalerao. For him, the character has a special place in his heart. “Sangram Bhalerao will always stay extraordinarily close to my heart because I got to act in a film, in a genre which was my home territory. power packed cop universe.” Actress Sara Ali Khan, who played a pivotal role in the film, too praised Rohit. She said: “The way I define a masala Bollywood film is a Rohit sir film. I think it has every emotion, every flavor is depicted, and in a rather grand way, which makes watching a movie a fulfilling expe-

rience. “There’s drama, romance, good music, large sets, cars are flying. When you come with your friends and family for two hours you get fully transported into his grand larger-than-life world which makes the cinema-going experience totally memorable and fully Paisa vasool,” Sara said.

MUMBAI: Mission Mangal has been declared tax-free in Maharashtra. With ticket prices coming down, more people, especially from the rural areas will feel encouraged to watch the film, which chronicles the story of India’s Mangalyaan or the Mars Orbiter Mission. Earlier, Akshay Kumar had said during the film’s promotion: “I’ve made this film mainly for children, so that they feel encouraged to become scientists. Scientist as a profession is not very likeable, but now after ISRO’s launch of the Chandrayaan, people are gradually becoming more aware of it and taking interest in it.

I hope this film helps to spread the fact that what a great profession it is. ”With the film being declared taxfree, it is expected that more children will get to watch it and learn about the Mangalyaan, which has carved India’s name in golden letters in the history of space research. Directed by Jagan Shakti, Mission Mangal stars Akshay Kumar, Vidya Balan, Sonakshi Sinha, Kirti Kulhari, Taapsee Pannu, Nithya Menen and H.G. Dattatreya in key roles. The film, which hit theatres on August 15, has already collected over Rs 165 crore at the box office.

‘Sex, violence rule web space’ IANS, NEW DELHI

A

cclaimed actor Manoj Bajpayee says the digital space gives a lot of freedom but is against the use of violence and sex when not required to attract eyeballs. “Web space gives you lot of freedom and one needs to be very responsible with this freedom. Using sex and violence just to attract the eyeballs is something that I don’t agree with when it’s not even required,” Manoj told IANS. Manoj is not new to the web space. He has previously starred in a short film Kriti and Taandav.

There has been a constant debate the digital space having some kind of censorship. In a interview earlier, superstar Salman Khan had said there should be censorship for content on the digital space and that there should be an appointed body for the purpose. But Manoj feels that the director’s should be given the right to censor their content. “It’s always better to give the right to the directors to censor their films and they will do it. They need to be trusted upon,” he added. The National Award winner will soon be seen in Netflix’s Mrs. Serial Killer and Amazon Prime’s The

Family Man. Without divulging much about his role in “Mrs. Serial Killer”, the 50-year-old actor described the character as “nice”. "Mrs. Serial Killer" is about a wife, whose husband has been framed and imprisoned for serial murders. She needs to perform a murder exactly like the serial killer, to prove that her husband is innocent.

‘Sacred Games 2’: Unnecessary, vile and venomous

S

igh. Mumbai is again under siege. Nuclear attack being planned, no less, this time. And the monstrously notorious, foul-mouthed and evil-minded Gaitonde is back to create another season of havoc in a series whose massive global success has surprised many, stunned none. Is it the unabashed language and brazen depiction of bodily functions? One character who we are

told has an erectile dysfunction, gets a remedial treatment from an obliging lady in a swimming pool. Frankly there is little to appreciate in this season of Sacred Games. Even the performances appear strangely detached, with Saif Ali Khan delib-

erately playing down his characters’ tensions to let his archrival scream through a role that grows progressively socio-pathic. Gaitonde’s foul language gets tiring after a while. The number of times he uses the crude term for the male private part makes one wonder if we are to read something Freudian in that script. There is way too much happening on screen in this season. The violence that undercuts and defines the drama is purposely overbearing. Mumbai is finally saved. I am not too sure about the series. —Subhash K. Jha

Saif wants media to leave Taimur alone

A

ctress Sonam Kapoor says she is iodine deficient. The actress, who follows a vegan diet, took to Instagram to announce the news. She urged all the vegans and vegetarians to include salt with iodine in their diet, on Instagram stories. “Just a note to all the vegetarian or vegans out there! Please make sure you’re using salt with iodine in it. I’ve just found out I have an iodine deficiency,” she wrote. “Table salt is the easiest way to get iodine,” she added. On the work front, Sonam will next be seen in The Zoya Factor. The film is based on novelist Anuja Chauhan’s book of the same name. It tells the tale of a Rajput girl, Zoya Solanki (Sonam), who meets the Indian cricket team through her job as an executive in an advertising agency and ends up becoming a lucky charm for the team in the Cricket World Cup.

S

aif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor’s son Taimur is an online sensation and paparrazi’s favourite, but the constant media glare on the two-yearold kid bothers the parents. A video of Saif scolding shutterbugs is doing the rounds on the Internet. In the clip, Saif is seen giving Taimur a piggy ride and walking towards the media, and can be heard saying: “No, no not outside the house please, like we promised. No, enough, you are not supposed to do that.”While the little child was smiling and waving to the photographs.Saif had earlier expressed concern over the growing paparazzi culture in India. He wondered how people could be so interested in Taimur’s life.“The media’s constant attention to him does not really bother me, but it would be better if it was not there.

Ishaan, Ananya to star in edgy film

A

ctors Ishaan Khatter and Ananya Panday will come together for the first time for director Maqbool Khan’s young and edgy film Khaali Peeli. Set in Mumbai, Khaali Peeli is a young, edgy roller-coaster ride that kick-starts one night, when boy meets girl. “I can’t wait to start this ride with this young talent,” said Khan.Ali Abbas Zafar, who directed multiple blockbusters like “Sultan” and Tiger Zinda Hai, has joined hands with Zee Studios to co-produce Khaali Peeli. Produced by Zee Studios, Zafar and Himanshu Kishan Mehra, Khaali Peeli —will go on floor on September 11.

‘Our generation over consuming resources’

B

ctor Vicky Kaushal, who appears in the music video of Arijit Singh’s new non-film single, Pachtaoge, says that, unlike in the video, he has never had any sort of drama in his real-life relationship where he had to suffer. Pachtaoge, which has garnered over 34 million views since release on August 23, follows the themes of love, cheating and heartbreak. Has Vicky ever been in a tumultuous relationship? “No, I have not had so much drama in my relationships where I had to suffer. I only have fond memories,” Vicky told IANS. The actor, who was recently feted with a National Award as Best Actor for his role in Uri: The Surgical Strike, says he knows people who have been through such relationships. “But yes, you always know of somebody who has had gone through something like this or has gone through a heartbreak. It could not be cheating but it could be something else that could have cause a lot of heartbreak.”

ollywood actress Kangana Ranaut who recently made headlines after making a public appearance wearing a plain cotton sari says a generation that is “over consuming resources” is noticing her Rs 600 sari. The actress has urged people and the fashion industry to be “considerate” and encourage celebrities when they repeat their outfits and recycle fabrics. “I’m happy, people have noticed it. I tell the fashion industry we, as a generation, are over consuming resources. We got to be considerate. Also, the shaming (of people) for repeating outfits and recycling fabrics should be stopped,” the “Manikarnika” star told IANS.

I did whatever I wanted to: Tabu

T

wo National Awards as Best Actress and an experience of over three decades in Bollywood has takren Tabu to a space where there is no room for self-doubt, but the acclaimed actress reveals that even today she questions herself a lot before signing a new project. “(It’s) Not self doubt, but I try to ask myself lots of questions before saying ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to a project. I want to be sure, because that is important for me. I ask myself, ‘why am I doing it?’, or ‘why don’t I want to do this particular thing’? When I am convinced with my answers, only then will I go ahead with it. However, a film’s becoming successful or not is a chance that everyone takes,” Tabu told IANS. — All stories from IANS

In New India, corruption, loot reined in: Modi Prime Minister Narendra Modi hails the role of Indian diaspora in France in strengthening bilateral relations IANS, PARIS

P

rime Minister Narendra Modi said that in “new India, corruption, nepotism, dynasty, loot of people’s money, and terrorism have been reined in like never before”, in an indirect reference to the arrest of senior Congress leader and former Finance Minister P. Chidambaram for alleged corruption. Addressing the Indian diaspora at the UNESCO headquarters here, Modi said that his government was taking decisions in the spirit of “spasht niti, sahi disha (clear policy, right direction)”. “Reform, perform, and transform and with permanent systems, the country is moving forward to achieve its goal,” he said. Hitting out at the previous opposition-led governments over Article 370, he said it was ironical that the country had taken 70 years to eliminate the temporary provision that gave special status to

You would have seen how a country of 1.25 billion people, the land of Mahatma Gandhi, Gautam Buddha, Ram, Krishna took 70 years to remove what was temporary. I don’t know whether to laugh or cry at this,” the PM said, a day after French President Emmanuel Macron stated that Pakistan and

India should resolve the Kashmir situation, and there was no place for third party interference. Modi appreciated the role of the Indian community in France in strengthening bilateral ties. “Your contribution is integral to Indo-French ties. You are the representatives, the voice and the identity of India in France. I hope that you would continue to strengthen this

3 Deputy CMs: Row erupts in Karnataka This is the first time Karnataka has three Deputy CMs in the 34-member ministry, says Congress IANS, BENGALURU

T

he surprise appointment of three Deputy Chief Ministers in the monthold BJP government in Karnataka has sparked a row in the ruling party and drawn sharp criticism from the opposition Congress and Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S). “This is the first time Karnataka has three Deputy CMs in the 34member ministry in which 16 posts are still vacant. It only indicates the pulls and pressures in the ruling party and the grip its central leadership has over Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa,” senior Congress leader V.S. Ugrappa told IANS on Tuesday. As finalized and directed by the party’s high command headed by National President Amit Shah, Yediyurappa has appointed Govind Karjole, C. N. Ashwath Narayan and Laxman Savadi as Deputy Chief Ministers with key portfolios. Though the remaining 14 ministers were given portfolios with plum posts for some at the expense of others, their seniority or previous experience was ignored in allotting the departments. “BJP’s former chief minister Jagadish Shettar and its former two Deputy CMs, K.S. Eshwarappa and R. Ashoka were overlooked for the Deputy CM’s post and key portfolios. Instead, the party’s high command has rewarded Narayan, a first-time minister, and Savadi,

who lost in the May 2018 state Assembly election from Athani in the state’s northwest, ostensibly to keep the 76-year-old Yediyurappa in check if not on leash despite being the party’s strong Lingayat leader and popular,” said Ugrappa. Shettar, a Lingayat from Hubballi-Dharwad was BJP’s third Chief Minister during its five-year regime (2008-2013) from August 2011 to September 2012. He has been given Large and Medium Industries portfolio though he held revenue and rural development & panchayati raj posts earlier. He was also speaker for two years from 2008-2011. Narayan belongs to the politically dominant Vokkaliga community

and represents the prestigious Malleshwaram Assembly segment in Bengaluru northwest. He holds Higher Education, IT & BT and Science & Technology. Savadi, a Lingayat like Yediyurappa, has been given Transport. As he is not a member of Assembly or Council, he has to get elected or nominated by the party in the next six months to continue. “Savadi, who was a cooperation minister in the party’s first tenure in the state (2011-12) was forced to resign after he was caught watching a porn clip on his mobile when the Assembly session was underway. On what merits he is in the ministry and made a Deputy CM?” asked JD-S leader Mahesh Babu.

AMARAVATI: The Andhra Pradesh government on Wednesday said it will allocate Rs 500 crore for setting up of de-addiction centers and for implementation of prohibition. Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy also directed officials to include lessons on ill-effects of liquor in school text books. The officials claimed liquor consumption fell drastically after the government cracked the whip on illegal outlets as a first step towards imposition of total prohibition in the state. The officials informed the Chief Minister during a review meeting that sale of liquor till July showed a decrease of 12 lakh cases compared to the previous year’s figures. During 2018-19, the state registered sale of 125 lakh cases of liquor. Under the second phase to implement prohibition, the government will take over the liquor shops in a phased manner. It would initially open 503 liquor shops as a pilot project from Sep-

tember 1, the officials said. As per the route map towards total prohibition, the liquor outlets would be reduced from 4,380 to 3,500. On the whole, the shops will be reduced by 20 per cent. The Chief Minister called for strengthening the enforcement and police departments. He asked officials to ensure that there is no smuggling of liquor. He asked the officials to take strict measures to check the flow of illicit liquor. He said women police should be employed in Village Secretariats for effective implementation of prohibition. The Chief Minister had promised total prohibition in the state during the election campaign. After coming to power in May, he announced that prohibition will be implemented in a phased manner. In June, he ordered a crackdown on ‘belt shops’. The state Assembly last month passed a bill to provide for the government to take over liquor business. —IANS

Am astonished to hear that I justified Modi: Tharoor IANS, THIRUVANANTHAPURAM

I

n his reply to Kerala Congress unit chief Mullapally Ramachandran, Shashi Tharoor on Wednesday said “he is astonished to hear that he justified Prime Minister Narendra Modi”. Tharoor was served a notice, after several of his Parliament party colleagues from Kerala went hammer and tongs against him for what they believe was a statement praising Modi. In his letter to Ramachandran, Tharoor said he would be grateful if he could point to the precise statement “he made that does that, because he has done no such thing”. “On the contrary, I would urge you to look at parliamentary

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor (Photo: Shaukat Ahmed/IANS)

debates and find me, one leader from our state who has made 10 per cent of the effort, I made to study, research, anticipate and

oppose the Modi government on every Bill they sought to introduce against the spirit of Constitution and the values of the Congress,”

said the Thiruvananthapuram Lok Sabha member. “I intervened more than 50 times in Parliament and spoke against 17 Bills with courage and conviction. Can any of my critics from Kerala say they have done so? Who on earth can credibly accuse me of a “volte face” from the stand I took when I sat alongside you in the last Lok Sabha?,” asked Tharoor. You are aware of all of this. So what’s this outcry about? It is based on “hysterical reactions to distorted reporting of a single tweet I issued supporting remarks made by Jairam Ramesh and Abhishekh Singhvi.” “I want the Congress, together with progressive, secular and liberal parties, to come back to power. For that, nationally, it’s not enough to

keep attracting the core Congress supporters. We need to win back the trust -- and the votes -- of those who deserted us for the BJP in the last two elections. That requires addressing what has attracted them to Modi. Then, our criticism has more credibility. That’s all I have been saying,” he said. As to your point about waiting for a party forum, comments by both Jairam and Singhvi were made at public forums and I was responding to comments on social media, “which as I have explained to you before, require responses in real time.” He ends his letter by stating, “I urge my fellow Congressmen from Kerala to respect my approach even when they don’t agree with it.”

Meet India’s new world champion Ace shuttler PV Sindhu becomes first Indian to win the BWF World Championships

Manasi Joshi wins gold at World Para-Badminton

IANS, BASEL (SWITZERLAND)

A

ce shuttler P.V. Sindhu on Sunday became the first Indian to win the BWF World Championships, crushing Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara 21-7, 21-7 in just 36 minutes in a one-sided final. Sindhu’s gold is the second medal that India won at the Worlds this year with Sai Praneeth winning a bronze in men’s singles category. The last time Sindhu and Okuhara met in a World Championships final was in 2017. In a pulsating encounter that lasted nearly two hours and involved a 73-shot rally, Okuhara emerged victorious in the end. Sindhu again reached the final in 2018, only to go down to Carolina Marín of Spain. However, she finally broke the jinx this time, brushing aside her opponent with a dominant show from start to finish. In stark contrast to world No. 5 Sindhu, the Japanese world No. 4

IN BRIEF Dravid replaced as India A, U19 head coach NEW DELHI: Former Indian skipper Rahul Dravid, who has been appointed as the head of cricket at the National Cricket Academy (NCA), Rahul Dravid will no longer serve as the head coach of India A and U19 teams.Sitanshu Kotak and Paras Mhambrey have been named head coaches of the India A and U19 teams, respectively.

Team peaking at right time: Rani Rampal NEW DELHI: The Indian womens hockey team recently put up a brilliant performance at the Olympic Test Event in Tokyo, defeatRani Rampal ing hosts Japan 2-1 in the final to win the competition. And captain Rani Rampal seems extremely pleased with the way her team played against top sides like Australia, China and Japan. “It was incredible to remain unbeaten throughout the Olympic Test Event. looked completely at sea against the Indian star’s relentless attacks. Although Okuhara won the first point of the first game, Sindhu won eight straight points after that to race to a 8-1 lead. Okuhara managed just one more point before the interval with Sindhu leading 11-2. The mauling continued for much of the second period of the opener, which ended in just 16 minutes.

Okuhara got a few consecutive points towards the end to extend her score to 7 but Sindhu sealed the issue on her first game point. In the second game, Okuhara briefly kept pace until the score was 3-2 in Sindhu’s favor after which the Indian took six consecutive points to race to a 9-2 lead. This was the 16th match between Sindhu and Okuhara. Sindhu now

NEW DELHI: Manasi Joshi, who was among the three Indian players who won gold at the recently concluded World Para-Badminton Championship, said she earned the medal as she worked really hard for it. The 30-year-old clinched the top honours in the women’s singles SL3 final defeating World No. 1 and compatriot Parul Parmar 21-12, 21-7 to pick her maiden title in Basel, Switzerland on August 25, the very day on which ace shuttler P.V. While Malik took the award, Punia had to skip the awards

ceremony as he is training in Russia for the upcoming World championships. Bajrang will receive the award from Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju after he returns from the World championships. India-WI: Rahane’s ton, Bumrah’s fifer script record win IANS, NORTH SOUND (ANTIGUA)

I

t seemed the Indian pacers were in a hurry to finish things off as they bundled out the West Indies for a paltry 100 runs in their second innings, setting up a mammoth 318-run victory on the fourth day of the first Test here. Jasprit Bumrah scalped a fifer conceding just seven runs while his teammate Ishant Sharma picked three for 31. In the process, Bumrah also became the first bowler from Asia to take five-wicket hauls in Australia, England, South Africa and the West Indies, in only his 11th Test. The win not only gave India 1-0 lead in the two-match series but also 60

points in their inaugural World Test Championship match. It was also India’s fourth-biggest Test win besides being the biggest in

away Test. Chasing a huge 419-run target, the Windies batsmen lacked patience as only three of them could touch the double digits. Kemar

Roach with 38 was the top scorer for the hosts.Kraigg Brathwaite (1) was the first two go, caught behind off Bumrah. John Campbell (7) was castled by the same bowler while Ishant trapped debutant Shamarh Brooks (2) in front.Darren Bravo was clean-bowled by Bumrah and Shimron Hetmyer (1) was caught at slip by Rahane off Ishant, making up for Virat Kohli dropping him earlier as the Windies were reduced to 15/5 at Tea.In the final session, the visitors continued their dominance as Bumrah struck again, this time sending back Shai Hope (2) and soon he also accounted for the wicket of Jason Holder (8), which saw Windies reeling at 37/7.
