he abrogation of Articles 370 and 35A by the two Houses of Parliament of India with a two-third majority, led to sharp criticism from the principal domestic opposition in India, a predictable denunciation from Pakistan and a range of responses -- from an expression of understanding of India’s case to a positive support of the move -- from the international community. The US, Russia, France and many other countries confined themselves to counseling India and Pakistan to reduce tension and sort out any issue relating to Kashmir through bilateral dialogue. They did not question India’s consistent position that J&K was an integral part of India and that the trouble in the state was caused by Pak-sponsored cross border terrorism. It is Pakistan that has taken a communal line on Kashmir, created a separatist lobby in the name of Hurriyat in the Valley led by the Jamaat supremo Syed Ali Shah Gilani to build pro-Pak opinion among the Muslims there and gradually established a large network of agents to cause civil disturbances as a way of protesting against the presence of security forces of the Center. Will Salman push ‘D3’ to Eid 2020?
MUMBAI: If sources in the Salman Khan camp are to be believed, the superstar is now seriously thinking of postponing his home production Dabangg 3 to Eid Salman Khan 2020. The film is all set for a December 20, 2019 release as of now. With Kick 2 producer-director Sajid Nadiadwala openly denying reports that his film will be ready for release on Eid next year, choices have gradually narrowed down for Salman when it comes to delivering fans the cinematic Eid treat he recently promised in a tweet. —IANS

Residents from Florida all the way up to Virginia were warned to listen to emergency advice
US-China trade talks to resume in Oct

H
urricane Dorian was expected to bring a “life-threatening storm surge” up the US east coast after causing widespread destruction and at least 20 deaths in the Bahamas. Bahamas Prime Minister Hubert Minnis called it “one of the greatest national crises in our country’s history” as homes were wiped out, and in some cases, entire neighborhoods were mashed into rubble. The only international airport on the island of Grand Bahama was also ripped apart, media reports say. Residents from Florida all the way up to Virginia were warned to listen to emergency advice as the category two hurricane slowly moved north. The hurricane weakened after hitting the Bahamas but has now strengthened again. On September 1, it hit the Bahamas with winds of up to 185mph (298km/h) — equaling the highest ever recorded at landfall. It battered the Abaco Islands and Grand Bahama, in the north

of the archipelago, for two days. Bahamanian authorities put the official death toll due to Dorian at 20 although the figure was expected to go up as relief teams continued to reach severely impacted areas. The UN’s relief chief, Mark Lowcock, said on Wednesday that northern Bahamas was “devastated” by the hurricane, “the like of which has never been seen here before”. According to the US National
Pompeo ‘declines’ to sign Afghan deal, says TIME WASHINGTON: The fragile peace negotiations between the US, Afghanistan and the Taliban may have hit a snag as US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has reportedly refused to sign on to a draft of the peace deal as it currently stands, the media reported. Under the proposed draft the US would withdraw some 5,000 troops from Afghanistan - with TIME Magazine reporting that number could be as high as 5,400 - and shutter five bases within 135 days. Additionally, the deal would require the Taliban commit to not allowing Afghanistan to be used as a base from which militant groups, such as the Islamic State or Al Qaeda, could plan attacks on the US and its allies. Throughout the negotiations Taliban officials insisted that all foreign forces must leave the country, which has fuelled concerns that if the US were to fully withdraw it would leave the US-backed government of Afghanistan vulnerable, especially with its security forces already stretched

thin, mired in allegations of corruption and suffering losses. Pompeo might be having issues with the deal as it does not ensure several crucial things, those familiar with the discussions told the magazine. It does not guarantee the continued presence of US counter terrorism forces to battle Al Qaeda, the survival of the pro-US government in Kabul, or even an end to the fighting in Afghanistan. “That may explain why Pompeo is declining to put his name on the deal,” according to the report, which cited senior American, Afghan and European officials. —IANS
Hurricane Center (NHC), Dorian was currently about 100 km southeast of Savannah in the state of Georgia and moving north at about 11 km/h. The NHC warned that a “life-threatening storm surge with significant coastal flooding is expected along a large portion of the southeast and mid-Atlantic coasts of the US in the next couple of days”. Dorian could move “near or over” the coast of South Carolina,
then the coast of North Carolina the following day. Bahamian National Security Minister Marvin Dames said that there were more than 600 police and Marines on Grand Bahama Island and nearly 100 in the Abaco Islands to assist with the rescue operation, according to local media. The US Coast Guard and NGOs were working on the ground to bring food and medicine to survivors.
BEIJING: Negotiating teams from China and the US will meet in Washington in early October to continue looking for a solution to their trade war, Beijing’s Ministry of Commerce said in a brief statement. “The two sides agreed to hold the 13th round of China-US highlevel economic and trade consultations in Washington in early October, after (which) the two sides will maintain close communication,” the statement released on Thursday said, Efe news reported. It added that their working teams will hold in-depth meetings in mid-September to prepare for “substantive progress of the highlevel consultations,” and both sides agreed they should “work together and take practical actions to create favorable conditions for the negotiations.” The agreement for this new round of talks comes after a phone call between the parties, according to the statement. The US-China trade war, triggered by Trump’s aggressive protectionism since coming to power in Jan 2017, reached its peaked in May, with the imposition of a 25 per cent tariff on Chinese imports worth $250 billion, almost half of the total. Beijing responded with similar levies on $110 billion of US imports. —IANS
Dem forerunners: Biden, Warren, Sanders IANS, WASHINGTON
F
ormer US Vice President Joe Biden, Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren and Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders have emerged as the Democratic forerunners who will face off against incumbent President Donald Trump in the 2020 election. The pool of Democrats vying for the nomination is one of the largest in recent memory, with 10 candidates itching to take on Trump in November 2020, Xinhua news agency. In the lead is Biden, followed by Sanders and Warren. California Senator Kamala Harris, who is of Indian and Jamaican descent, is at the top of the list of those who could conceivably overtake the current top three, followed by South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg. However, the top three candidates have a number of hurdles to overcome, according to political analysts. For Biden, his biggest problem is the fact that he is in his mid-70s. Many younger Democratic voters would prefer a younger candidate and a fresher face, rather than
U.S. Vice President Joe Biden.
someone who already spent eight years in the White House. The former Vice President is also particularly prone to gaffes, which appear to be catching up with him, as a number of news outlets have highlighted a few tall tales he told last week. One, about being shot at in Iraq, turned out not to be true, as was another embellishment, that he marched in the US Civil Rights Movement — an iconic movement in American history to promote equal rights for African Americans.
That story also turned out to be untrue, reported US media. Moreover, many believe Biden lacks the ability to inspire, which endeared former President Barack Obama to his supporters. Those who support Biden do so because of his policies and the fact that he could, they believe, unseat Trump, the analysts added. Meanwhile, critics describe Sanders and Warren as “unelectable”. Sanders is pushing a green energy plan that some US media have dismissed as laughable.

Chidambaram sent to jail
Special CBI Judge Ajay Kumar Kuhar sent former finance minister to 14 days in custody in INX Media case IANS, NEW DELHI
A
Delhi court on Thursday sent Former Finance Minister P. Chidambaram to judicial custody in the CBI case involving INX Media. Special CBI Judge Ajay Kumar Kuhar sent Chidambaram to 14 days in custody after the former Union minister was produced before in court on Thursday. The court also allowed applications moved by Chidambaram seeking medicines and a western-style toilet in jail along with Z-category security and a separate cell with a cot and a bathroom. The same were allowed by the court. Chidambaram has also moved another application in the court seeking permission to surrender in the Enforcement Directorate case relating to INX Media. The court had issued a notice to the financial watchdogs and the hearing on it would take place on September 12. During the course of hearing, Chidambaram’s counsel Kapil Sibal said, “There is nothing found against me. If I am a powerful person and I can influence the witness, they should bring some evi-

dence of at least an attempt of tampering of evidence or influencing of witness.” “Potential of, likely to, apprehension of, can’t be the reasons for me going to the judicial custody,” he added. Responding on the submissions, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, said, “Are you arguing on bail?” Sibal replied, “I am arguing on
the grounds you are seeking judicial custody for.” “It is basically humiliation. There must be proof that has to be given,” Sibal said. Mehta replied “So far as the ED case is concerned, Supreme Court has accepted the chance of tampering. There is a strong possibility of tampering with the evidence.” Earlier, a Delhi court granted
anticipatory bail to Chidambaram and his son Karti Chidambaram in both the ED and the CBI matters relating to the Aircel Maxis case. District and Sessions Judge O.P. Saini, while granting the relief to the father-son duo, directed the applicants to furnish a personal bail bond of Rs 1 lakh each along with the surety of a like amount. “Considering the distance of
time between the commission of the alleged crime and the filing of the instant applications, unexplained delay in the investigation, there being no possibility of the accused tampering with the evidence or threatening any witness or fleeing from justice...I am satisfied that it is a fit case for grant of anticipatory bail,” the court observed in its order. The court said, “Since the investigation is still pending, the accused shall join the investigation as and when called by the investigating officer (IO).” The court has also directed the father-son duo to not leave the country without prior permission of the court. “They shall not contact, threaten or influence any witness and tamper with the evidence in any manner,” the court ruled. The case relates to the alleged irregularities in granting Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) approval in the Aircel-Maxis deal in 2006 when Chidambaram was the Union Finance Minister. According to the rules and the Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) policy, Chidambaram was only empowered to give approval to the proposals involving foreign investments of up to Rs 600 crore.
US backs India’s terrorists’ list Insurance for J&K panchayat members NEW YORK: The US has backed India designating four Pakistanbased criminals as terrorists under an amended law saying that it expands possibilities of cooperation between Washington and New Delhi in fighting terrorism. US President Donald Trump has a visceral dislike of Islamic extremism and faith-based terrorism arising from the Pak-Afghan belt
Dangerous spin to Kashmir narrative DC PATHAK, NEW DELHI
T
he abrogation of Articles 370 and 35A by the two Houses of Parliament of India with a two-third majority, led to sharp criticism from the principal domestic opposition in India, a predictable denunciation from Pakistan and a range of responses -- from an expression of understanding of India’s case to a positive support of the move -- from the international community. In a carefully crafted strategy, Pak
Army chief Bipin Rawat interacts with soldiers in Jammu and Kashmir. (Photo: IANS)
ISI first destabilized the border state of Punjab by sponsoring the Khalistan movement and then -- finding that attempt failing to achieve its objective by the end of the Eighties -- added on the separatist campaign in Kashmir to its plan. In the early Nineties, it embarked on a replication of Afghan Jehad in Kashmir by pumping in battle hardened Mujahideen across the LoC. The first group of terrorists sent in belonged to Harkat-ul-Ansar comprising the Taliban and Jaish-eMohammad elements and soon
Lashkar-e-Toiba came on the scene in the Valley to subdue the Kashmiriyat and spread Salafi extremism there. The Jamaatis were directed to take orders from them. The biggest misfortune of the Kashmiris was that the political leaders of the Valley, who governed them over these two decades through the democratic process, became a captive of the proPak separatists just for gaining a political advantage. Pakistan being in no position to directly confront India is knocking at the door of its only ‘all weather
friend’ China and hoping to rake up the matter of Kashmir at UN, International Court of Justice (ICJ) or the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). India has stuck to the stand that ‘talks and terror could not go together’ and explained it to all that the governance of J&K had been taken over by the Center only to give a better deal to the law abiding Kashmiris. Till recently President Donald Trump of the US himself was denouncing the Pak regime upfront on this issue and chastising it for playing a duplicitous role in
the US-led ‘war on terror’ against the Islamic radicals of Al Qaeda-Taliban combine as well as the ISIS. It comes as a curious surprise to Indians that President Trump has made some comments somewhat at the cost of India on the present situation in Kashmir — even though these seemed to have been driven primarily by his keenness to keep Pakistan on his side in the context of the ongoing developments in Afghanistan. Referring to the telephonic talks Prime Ministers of India and Pakistan had with him in the wake of the abolition of Articles 370 and 35A of the Constitution by the Indian Parliament, he stated that ‘it is a very explosive situation’ in Kashmir, ruled that it was all because of the conflict between Hindus and Muslims there and went on to say that religion was ‘the main reason for the uneasy ties between India and Pakistan’. The comments of President Trump painting India and Pakistan with the same brush, however, need not upset India since these could be seen in the context of his current preoccupation with Afghanistan. Trump has a visceral dislike of Islamic extremism and faith-based terrorism arising from the PakAfghan belt. India should, therefore, continue to build convergence with US against this common threat.
Tariff-hit US firms want to relocate to India ARUL LOUIS, NEW YORK
A
bout 200 US companies have expressed interest in coming from China to India, according to Mukesh Aghi, the president of US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF). The organization, which promotes bilateral business and trade relations between the two countries, has received enquiries from those companies about how to
invest in India and they have a potential for bringing $21 billion in investments to India, Aghi said during an interactive session at Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K. Palaniswami’s meeting with investors here on Tuesday. India’s Consul General Sandeep Chakravorty also said that there was a lot of interest from US companies to relocate from China to India and he hoped that Tamil Nadu is rolling out the red carpet for them. US President Donald Trump’s trade war with China, the problems with protecting intellectual property and restrictions on doing business have prompted many US companies to look for other places to move or expand operations. By investing in other countries these companies may be able to avoid the high tariffs imposed by Trump, some of which went into effect in September. Aghi asked USISPF board
member and former US Ambassador to India, Frank Wisner, what India and Tamil Nadu should do to get those companies to come there. Wisner said that the Center has to reform labor laws to make the condition of employment of workers easy, enable the acquisition of land easier, create reliable tax systems and establish a solid financial sector that is able to fuel investment. The responsibility of the state is
to provide “a framework of welcome” for companies wanting to relocate or invest by helping them find land facilitating clearances, and running interference with Delhi, said Wisner, who is now International Affairs Adviser to the global law firm, Squire Patton Boggs. He added that the state also has to provide “the kinds of educational and health infrastructure that is required not only for work force, but for managerial talent”.

Bill to stop no-deal Brexit set to pass Lords Currently, the UK is due to leave the EU bloc on October 31, with or without a deal IANS, LONDON
A
bill designed to rule out the possibility of a nodeal Brexit -- if the UK government fails to secure a deal with the EU – was set to complete its passage through the House of Lords on Friday. The bill, signed by a cross-party group of opposition lawmakers, has already cleared the House of Commons by 327 votes to 299 in what was a bruising defeat for UK’s new Prime Minister Boris Johnson. It is now in the House of Lords. Some opposition politicians feared that marathon filibustering by pro-government peers in the House of Lords, the upper house, could stall the bill’s progress but Lord Ashton of Hyde, a conservative peer, seemed to put those concerns to rest. “We have agreed that the current business of the House will be adjourned today and a new motion will be tabled tomorrow to allow the bill to complete all stages in this House by 5 p.m. on Friday 6 September,” he said.
UK PM’s MP brother quits LONDON: The UK Prime Minister’s brother Jo Johnson announced his resignation as a member of Parliament and Minister on Thursday, saying he was “torn between loyalty to his family and the national interest”. His shock resignation comes as his brother Boris Johnson, who at 55 is eight years his senior, struggled to command the House of Commons — the UK’s lower parliamentary chamber — where the government was coming up against staunch opposition to its Brexit plan. The Business Minister and Tory MP for Orpington, southeast London, cited an “unresolvable tension” in his role, the BBC reported. “It’s been an honor to represent
Orpington for 9 years and to serve as a Minister under three PMs. In recent weeks I’ve been torn between family loyalty and the national interest - it’s an unresolvable tension and time for others to take on my roles as MP and Minister,” Jo tweeted. A Downing Street spokesman said: “The Prime Minister would like to thank Jo Johnson for his service. He has been a brilliant, talented Minister and a fantastic MP”. Opposition figures were quick to jump on the latest departure from the government benches. “Boris Johnson is such a threat that even his own brother doesn’t trust him,” said Labour’s shadow education secretary Angela Rayner. —IANS
Peers landed an agreement in the early hours of Thursday, having debated the matter through the night. The move means the bill, which was presented by Labour MP Hilary Benn and requires the gov-
ernment to seek a Brexit extension if it fails to secure its desired alterations to the existing withdrawal bill, should be signed into law by Monday, just before the prorogation of Parliament, Efe news reported.
China didn’t influence bill withdrawal: HK leader HONG KONG: Hong Kong’s beleaguered leader said on Thursday that Beijing played no role in her surprise decision to withdraw a contentious extradition bill, but that the Chinese authorities had given her “respect” and “support”. At a press briefing, Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam said Beijing had “respected my view”, “supported me all the way” and respected the “one country, two systems” formula as she dealt with the extradition bill issue, which has plunged Hong Kong into an unprecedented political crisis. On Wednesday, Lam announced through a video statement the formal withdrawal of the bill, together with three other new measures to deal with the crisis, in order to “fully allay public concerns”. Lam on Thursday added that the withdrawal of the bill did not mean “a change of mind”. “This formal withdrawal of the bill… doesn’t make a difference in substance because there has been no plan whatsoever…to resume the bill.
Carrie Lam. (File Photo: IANS)
“Despite (not) being different in substance, this is going to be a useful measure for creating that basis for a dialog, and yesterday was the best time to do it. There should be no further speculation about why we are doing it,” she added. For weeks Lam had repeatedly maintained that the bill was already “dead” and refused to initiate an independent inquiry into the police, one of the key demands of protesters. The other demands include the formal withdrawal of the bill. —IANS
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson in the House of Commons in London.
Johnson’s decision to prorogue Parliament for five weeks ahead of Brexit united opposition forces in the lower house and caused rifts in his own party. The government slated a Queen’s Speech, which sets out its legislative agenda for the year to come, on October 14. Currently, the UK is due to leave the bloc on October 31, with or without a deal. The House of Commons witnessed a tumultuous day of debate on Wednesday. Johnson was defeated on two major fronts, firstly by the bill to rule out a no-deal Brexit and then again when MPs shot down his bid
to slate snap elections on October 15. He garnered just 298 votes in favour, well short of the two-thirds majority required. The opposition has effectively taken control of the parliamentary agenda. The opposition Labour Party led by Jeremy Corbyn has said that it would accept a snap election, but not on Johnson’s terms. Johnson, who recently took over from Theresa May as party leader after his predecessor failed to get passed the Brexit withdrawal bill, argued that removing the option of a no-deal Brexit weakened his negotiating stance with the EU.
Italy swears in new government IANS, ROME
I
taly on Thursday swore in its new government led by Guiseppe Conte, the anti-establishment Five Star Movement (M5S)-backed Prime Minister whose position survived the collapse of the previous coalition executive with right-wing nationalists and subsequent renegotiation with the centre-left. Conte -- whose continuation was one of the key demands of the antiestablishment M5S when it took up talks with the Democratic Party (PD) — was the first to pledge loyalty to the Republic and the Constitution at the Quirinale, the presidential palace. The new government will feature 10 Ministers from the M5S, nine from the PD, one from the left-wing Free and Equal, one independent technocrat, according to Efe news. They all took oath in the presence of Italy’s President Sergio Mattarella and are later expected to hold a first Cabinet meeting. Notable appointments included the M5S leader Luigi di Maio’s posting as Foreign Minister. The Interior Ministry, previously the haunt of
Giuseppe Conte.
Matteo Salvini of the far-right League party, will now be occupied by Luciana Lamorgese, an independent. Alfonso Bonafede (M5S) will take on the Justice Ministry, Lorenzo Guerini (PD) will head to the Defence Ministry and Roberto Gualtieri (PD) will head the Economy Ministry. Di Maio on Wednesday said the new government would be “brave and ambitious, able to carry forward
important measures for the growth and development of Italy”. Italy teetered on the brink of another political crisis when in August erstwhile Interior Minister Salvini called an end to the M5SLeague coalition and pushed for a snap election at a time when his party polled high. Instead, the M5S opened talks with the PD, which had been battered in the previous general elections.

industries, with the central government planning a corridor in the state for this sector. The state’s Industries Principal Secretary N. Muruganandam said that Tamil Nadu has announced an aerospace and defense industrial policy which gives special incentives to enterprises in the sector with subsidies for capital, land and skills development.
Electronic vehicle manufacturing is another sunrise sector the state is targeting, he said. As business relations grow between the US and India, particularly Tamil Nadu, this marks a historic anniversary, Frank Wisner, who is a former US ambassador to India, said. This year is the 225th anniversary of the setting up of US diplo-
matic representation in Madras, as Chennai was known in 1794, by William Abbott, who became the consular agent, he said. The US wanted to do business directly with India and not through the East India Company, which was resented by the British who refused to accord him diplomatic status, said Wisner, who is a board member of US-India Strate-
gic Partnership Forum. He said that he was “enormously proud” of the association that the US has developed with the state. Representatives of two US multinationals, Ford and Caterpillar, offered testimonials at the meeting to Tamil Nadu’s efficacy in working with investors. Katie Hays, the head of government and corporate affairs for Caterpillar, said that the manufacturer of heavy construction machinery and trucks found increased ease of doing business under the chief minister. She said that the company received strong support from the government and received uninterrupted supply of power and water. Ford Motor Co. International Government Relations Manager James Rowland said that the state is “one of the best global partners.” He said that the state offered the company a vast pool of skilled manpower. State Chief Secretary K. Shanmugam said that the state’s investment in social welfare resulted in it becoming a hub of economic activity and of consumption, which backed economic activity. The state was able to reap a social peace dividend by having the nation’s best law and order situation, he said. He said that the state planned to develop a Fintech city to draw companies integrating technology and financial services and it would be a draw for companies in the sector in the US.

court even once after the hearing started. After hearing both the prosecution and the defense, ACJM Subrata Mukherjee gave a 15-day window to Shami as he was abroad
with the national side. The arrest warrant would remain in abeyance during the next 15 days. However, if Shami did not surrender to the court during this time
frame, the law would take its own course, the judge said. On the other hand, the court ordered the warrant against Shami’s brother to be immediately executed. The arrest warrant came around six months after the police filed a charge sheet against the celebrated Indian cricketer under Sections 498A (domestic violence) and 354A (sexual harassment) of the Indian Penal Code. Hasin Jahan had, in 2018, filed a police complaint levelling multiple allegations against the cricketer and four of his family members. How an apple a day can keep pneumonia away Vitamin C in apple can boost anti-bacterial immunity IANS, LONDON
T
he Vitamin C boost found in fruits such as apples can boost anti-bacterial immunity and help protect people from pneumonia, suggests new research. The researchers found that to weaken the immune system and cause pneumonia, bacteria use hydrogen peroxide, also known as a bleaching agent that is used to whiten teeth or hair, as a stain remover, as well as for cleaning surfaces and disinfecting wounds. "By using hydrogen peroxide to defeat the immune system, you could say that the bacteria are fighting fire with fire. The body itself also

he new type of drugs for type 2 diabetes — SGLT2 inhibitors — are associated with a reduced risk of heart failure by 34 per cent, researchers said. The new SGLT2 inhibitors, which are now a commonly used drug group, reduce blood glucose, they added. In the study published in the journal The BMJ, the researchers wanted to show if there were positive cardiovascular effects from SGLT2 inhibitors in a broader patient group. The researchers used several national registries containing data on drug use, diseases, cause of death and other data from close to 21,000 patients with type 2 diabetes who began treatment with SGLT2

produces hydrogen peroxide as a defense against the bacteria," said research leader Nelson Gekara from Umea University in Sweden. "Therefore, it was surprising to see that many types of bacteria actually use the same substance to overcome the body´s defenses," he said. "One of the best known substances with the ability to neutralize hydrogen peroxide and that could hence boost anti-bacterial immunity are vitamins such as Vitamin C found in fruits. Perhaps the old adage ‘an apple a day keeps the doctor away’ is not off the mark," Gekara added. The researchers mainly focused their studies on Streptococcus pneumoniae. This bacterium, often called
pneumococcus, is the most common bacterium causing pneumonia but can also cause, among other illnesses, meningitis or severe sepsis. The ultimate goal of any invading microbe is to reside peacefully within our bodies without evoking a strong inflammatory reaction that may result in the elimination of the microbe. The researchers have found that pneumococcus and other bacteria accomplish this by targeting a key component of the immune system - the inflammasomes. The researchers also found that bacteria such as pneumococci release large quantities of hydrogen peroxide, and that this causes inactivation of inflammasomes thereby weakening the immune system.
Mouthwash use reduces the benefits of exercise: Study LONDON: Researchers have found that the blood pressure-lowering effect of exercise is significantly reduced when people rinse their mouths with antibacterial mouthwash, rather than water - showing the importance of oral bacteria in cardiovascular health. blood pressure was measured and saliva and blood samples were taken before exercise and at 120 minutes after exercise. The study found that when participants rinsed with the placebo, the average reduction in systolic blood pressure was -5.2 mmHg at one hour after exercise. —IANS

alaria infection is linked to 30 per cent higher risk of heart failure, a new research has warned. The mosquito-borne infection affects more than 219 million people worldwide each year, according to the 2018 statistics of the World Health Organization (WHO). "We have seen an increase in the incidence of malaria cases and what is intriguing is that we have seen the same increase in cardiovascular disease in the same
regions," said the first author of the study, Philip Brainin, a postdoctoral research fellow at the Herlev-Gentofte University Hospital in Denmark. "Even though we have taken preventive measures to decrease the malaria numbers, it remains a major burden," Brainin said. The researchers used Danish nationwide registries to identify patients with a history of malaria infection between January 1994 and January 2017. The mean age of patients in the study was 34 and 58 per cent of the subjects were male.
Around 4,000 malaria cases were identified, with 40 per cent having plasmodium falciparum, a parasite transmitted through mosquito bites that is responsible for the majority of severe malaria cases in humans. The 11-year follow-up of patients revealed 69 cases of heart failure, which were very high as compared to the general population, and 68 cases of cardiovascular death, which were considered within normal range. "These patients had a 30 per cent increased likelihood of devel-
oping heart failure over the followup time," Brainin said. The recent studies have found that malaria could be a contributor to functional and structural changes in the myocardium, which is the muscle tissue of the heart. Experimental studies have also shown that malaria may affect the blood pressure regulatory system causing hypertension, which is a contributor to heart failure. Malaria can also affect vascular pathways that cause inflammation in the heart, which could lead to fibrosis and then heart failure.

Thousands Gather to Worship at Lemont temple Consecration
BY A STAFF WRITER LEMONT, IL- Thousands of devotees gathered for worship in Lemont, IL as the Hindu Temple of Greater Chicago’s (HTGC) consecration was held in a grand manner last weekend. The HTGC complex has two temples in its premises: a Rama temple and another Ganesh-Shiva-Durga (GSD) temple. The GSD’s temple’s towers were consecrated in a Mahakumbhabhishekam event held over four days from August 15th to 18th. Kumbhabhishekam is a very special event that is done once every twelve years, primarily to infuse and enhance the divinity and spiritual power to the presiding deities, through several religious rituals. Kumbha means the head or crown of the temple and Abhishekam refers to sacred bathing, hence the event involves bathing of the temple towers with holy sanctified waters in an elaborate ceremony. It has been over eighteen months since the work began on the various activities related to the consecration. The temple administration constituted various committees that worked hard leading to the main consecration event. Religious artisans from India were brought in to undertake detailed renovation and repair work. In the main sanctum sanctorum, the idols in the temple were re-energized using multitude of rituals. The consecration events began with worship and homams in specially constructed yaagashaalas and havan-kunds dedicated to presiding deities. Elaborate rituals were conducted on four days after which the main consecration procedure, pouring of holy waters over the temple towers,
was carried out. The holy waters that were infused with divinity by rituals were carried by the priests to the top of the towers before they were poured amidst chanting of vedic hyms. An added delight was the showering of flowers on the entire temple by a helicopter. The temple authorities had invited fifteen vedic scholars from all over U.S to conduct the religious rituals. In addition, several spiritual and cultural programs were also held. Spiritual discourses by Swami Ishathmananda (Vivekananda Society of Chicago) and Swami Sarvapriyananda (Vedanta Society of New York) drew large crowds. Indian Consul General in Chicago Mr. Sudhakar Dalela, and U.S. Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi were among the dignitaries who joined the celebrations. Special events at the consecration included a bilva-offering at the top of temple towers by devotees (bilva samarpanam), oil-smearing on the idols by devotees (thaila samarpanam), and a Mahalakshmi Lalitha Devi Pooja by women. The celebrations concluded with a dance drama on Shiva-Parvathi wedding by Natya Dance Theater. The temple administration, working in tandem with the local authorities, had made elaborate arrangements to ensure that the large number of devotees thronging the temple had divine and pleasurable experience. The devotees were treated to sumptuous meals on all the four days. Special transportation and parking arrangements ensured that devotees, especially the seniors and elders, had a comfortable experience.

IndiaFest Milwaukee 2019 – 7th Annual Celebration BY A STAFF WRITER MILWAUKEE, WI- Governor Tony Evers has declared Aug 15th, 2019 as the ‘India Day’ in State of Wisconsin, honoring India; recognizing, certifying and endorsing the efforts brought by IndiaFest Milwaukee, a massive community building initiative launched by Spindle India, Inc., in 2013. Former Governor Scott Walker had also recognized and declared August 15th as the ‘India Day’ in Wisconsin in 2018. We celebrated the official India Day of Wisconsin on Aug 17th at IndiaFest Milwaukee, making it a significant milestone, one of its kinds. In the presense of huge crowd Governor Tom Evers, Former Governor Scott Walker, Mayor of Brookfield, Steve Ponto and Mayor of Milwaukee, Tom Barrett commended Spindle India, Inc. & IndiaFest Milwaukee for dedicated service and leadership, recognized its outstanding contributions to the community and proclaimed Aug 15th, 2019 as the INDIA DAY throughout City of Milwaukee. US Senator Ron Johnson issued a certificate of special senatorial recognition, presented to Spindle India, Inc., in recognition of 7th Annual IndiaFest Milwaukee with a remark, “Thank you for your continued dedication and efforts to bring visibility to the Indian Community of Milwaukee”. This 7th annual grand scale celebration of “India” (#IFM2019), the official India Day of State of Wisconsin (#IndiaDayWI), inaugurated with observing India’s independence day with hoisting and honoring India’s tricolor flag flying high with the people of Wisconsin and many dignitaries of the community. BY A STAFF WRITER SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – A Pakistani man has been charged for paying over one million dollars in bribes to several employees of the mobile carrier AT&T to unlock millions of phones tied to the company’s network. The U.S. Department of Justice said in a statement that he bribed workers at AT&T’s Bothell Customer Service Center in Washington to plant malware and illegally unlock cell phones. According to the DOJ, Muhammad Fahd reportedly had workers insert malware and “otherwise misuse” AT&T’s networks between 2012 and 2017, paying one insider $428,500 over a five-year period and even having some bribes delivered in person, the Engadget reported Aug. 7. Fahd would simply provide AT&T insiders with phone International Mobile Equipment Identity numbers and that they would use the firm’s internal systems to
unlock the phones. The Pakistani man, who was arrested in Hong Kong in February 2018, was only extradited to the U.S. Aug. 2, 2019. “Fahd is charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud, conspiracy to violate the Travel Act and the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, four counts of wire fraud, two counts of accessing a protected computer in furtherance of fraud, two counts of intentional damage to a protected computer, and four counts of violating the Travel Act,” the DOJ statement added. Fahd also recruited various AT&T employees to the conspiracy and some early recruits were paid to identify other employees who could be bribed and convinced to join the scheme. So far, three co-conspirators have pleaded guilty, and admitted they were paid thousands of dollars for facilitating the fraudulent scheme.
