9/11: Donald Trump threatens Taliban
Trump went to the Pentagon specifically to remember the 184 people killed there 18 years ago IANS, WASHINGTON
P
resident Donald Trump on Wednesday - the 18th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks - promised to escalate combat against the Taliban in Afghanistan, two days after cancelling peace talks with the insurgent group because of a new deadly attack in Kabul. In a speech at the Pentagon to commemorate the attacks on the World Trade Towers and the US military headquarters on Sept 11, 2001, Trump noted that this past weekend he cancelled a meeting he had scheduled at Camp David with representatives of the Taliban and the Afghan government to work out a peace deal, Efe news reported.
“We had peace talks scheduled a few days ago. I called them off when I learned that they had killed a great American soldier from Puerto Rico and 11 other innocent people,” Trump said, regarding the Kabul bomb attack that killed Army Sgt. Elis A. Barreto Ortiz. “(The Taliban) thought they would use this attack to show strength, but actually what they showed is unrelenting weakness. The last four days, we have hit our enemy harder than they have ever been hit before. And that will continue,” the president said. Trump added: “And if for any reason, they come back to our country, we will go wherever they are, and use power, the likes of which the United States has never
used before. And I’m not even talking about nuclear power.” He went on to expand upon his threat, saying: “They will never have seen anything like what will happen to them. No enemy on earth can match the overwhelming strength skill and might of the American armed forces.” “We do not seek conflict, but if anyone dares to strike our land, we will respond with the full measure of American power and the iron will of the American spirit, and that spirit is unbreakable,” Trump said. Trump’s warnings come two days after he pronounced the peace talks that Washington and the Taliban had been pursuing for more than a year in Qatar “dead.” The talks - which had already

produced a rough draft of a peace agreement - had been under way with an eye toward putting an end to the almost-two-decade-long war in Afghanistan. The suspension of negotiations, however, threatens to provoke the Taliban to launch a renewed wave of violence in Afghanistan at an especially delicate moment, just two
weeks before that country’s presidential election. Trump went to the Pentagon specifically to remember the 184 people killed there 18 years ago when a commercial jet was rammed into the Defense Department headquarters less than an hour after the Twin Towers in New York received their first impact from another hijacked passenger jet.
Trump delays 5% tariff Trump fires National Security Advisor hike on Chinese imports IANS, WASHINGTON
WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump announced that his administration was postponing a planned 5 per cent tariff hike on $250 billion worth of Chinese goods by two weeks as a gesture of goodwill toward Beijing on the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic. Trump took to Twitter on Wednesday to announce that the hike from 25 to 30 per cent in duties on certain Chinese imports would take effect on October 15 instead of October 1, as had been previously scheduled, Efe news reported. “At the request of the Vice Premier of China, Liu He, and due to the fact that the People’s Republic of China will be celebrating their 70th anniversary on October 1, we have agreed, as a gesture of good will, to move the increased Tariffs on $250 billion worth of goods (25 per cent to 30 per cent), from October 1 to October 15,” the President tweeted. The development comes after China’s Customs Tariff Commission of the State Council on Wednesday postponed the planned 25 per cent tariffs on 16 American products, which were to come into effect on Tuesday, by a year. These tariffs will now take effect on September 16, 2020, and affects items including fishmeal, some lubricants and raw materials used in cancer drugs. Reacting to Beijing’s move,

ays after calling of the peace talks with Afghanistan’s Taliban, US President Donald Trump on Tuesday said that he has fired his National Security Advisor John Bolton, as he “disagreed most strongly” with his suggestions. Bolton, a retired diplomat who was briefly US envoy to the UN in the George Bush administration, was the third NSA Trump has fired after former Army generals Michael Flynn and H.R. Macmaster.
US President Donald Trump with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Chinese state-run daily Global Times said that for China, “granting tariff exemptions on US goods is an innovation of the tariff system” and added that the measure “will benefit some companies from China and the US”. Following the development, global stocks were mostly on the rise. On Thursday, China’s Shanghai Composite Index (closed up 0.8 per cent, while Japan’s Nikkei also ended 0.8 per cent higher. The delay of tariffs come as the two sides prepare to hold their 13th round of talks aimed at resolving their long-running trade dispute, the BBC reported. “I informed John Bolton last night that his services are no longer needed at the White House,” Trump said in a series of tweets. “I disagreed strongly with many
of his suggestions, as did others in the Administration, and therefore I asked John for his resignation, which was given to me this morning. “I thank John very much for his service,” he said, adding that a Bolton had replaced McMaster last year. The tweet came just one hour after the White House press office said Bolton was scheduled to appear at a Tuesday press briefing along with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin, reports said.
US SC backs asylum restrictions IANS, WASHINGTON
T
he US Supreme Court has ruled that President Donald Trump’s administration can prohibit migrants asylum in America who have resided in or travelled through third countries. The court’s action, which came in a brief written order on Wednesday, effectively set interim rules that allow the administration to enforce its asylum restrictions while legal challenges to the policy continue, reports Efe news. The order stayed the effect of lower court injunctions that barred the administration’s plans. One of those injunctions was issued earlier this week by a federal judge in California. The policy, one of several measures the Trump administra-

tion has taken to deter immigration from Latin America, demands that refugees seek asylum in a safe country they enter before reaching the US. The rules effectively cut off most asylum claims by people coming from El Salvador, Guatemala or Honduras.
The court’s unsigned order, a single paragraph that didn’t provide its legal rationale, allows the government to implement the policy while litigation proceeds. The justices’ action isn’t a ruling on the merits of the case, which is still proceeding in lower courts.

Pak needs to understand that ‘repeating a lie four or five times does not make it a gospel truth’, says India IANS, NEW DELHI
I
GoM to take call on Air India debt NEW DELHI: Going whole hog to sell Air India this time after the Modi 1.0 government’s failed bid, the group of ministers (GoM) led by Union Home Minister Amit Shah is expected to decide the reserve price of the national carrier and dealing with its large debt. Among other issues are golden handshake to staff reaching a certain age and extending medical facilities to those who have already retired or would retire in years to come. Official sources said that the government is nearly decided over a complete exit and making necessary change in eligibility criteria and other terms to align it with the needs of the potential investors. “Major decisions left are fixing the fair price of Air India and handling the debt. Then contours of the disinvestment and retaining employees are other issues,” said an official. The meeting schedule of the group of ministers is yet to be decided but is expected shortly. Apart from Shah, the ministerial panel has Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Commerce and Railway Minister Piyush Goyal and Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri as the members. —IANS

ndia on Thursday slammed Pakistan’s attempt to polarise and politicize the Kashmir issue at the UN Human Rights Council, saying it was “full of lies and deceit”, and the global community has rejected it as it is aware of Islamabad’s role in aiding and abetting terrorism. Two days after India gave a strong rebuttal to Pakistan’s offensive on Kashmir at the UNHRC, Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Raveesh Kumar slammed Islamabad’s attempt at “double speak” at the top UN body. He said it was “quite audacious on the part of Pakistan, which is the epicenter of terrorism, to pretend to speak on behalf of the global community on human rights. Govt to front-load infra spending to revive economy CHENNAI : Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Tuesday shrugged off questions on the GDP growth declining to 5 per cent in Q1, saying a dip in growth is part of the process and the government will front-load infra spending as much possible to revive demand and consumption in the economy. Sitharaman said a dip in the GDP is part of the growth cycle and the government is conscious that it has to respond. “It’s not that government is not responding with measures to boost GDP. A dip in GDP is part of growth. Our full focus is now on how GDP can rise in the next quarter,” she said while addressing media on the actions and decisions of her ministry in 100 days of Modi 2.0. “We will try to front-load infra spending as much as possible,” she added, adding: “We are taking steps to increase consumer confidence in market.” The government recently set up a task force, headed by the Economic Affairs Secretary, to draw up a ‘National Infrastructure Pipeline’ of Rs 100 lakh crore. In the July Budget, the government had announced Rs 100 lakh crore investment in infra sector for the next 5 years. According to her, the task force is in the process of identifying the infra-

Sitharaman also said the government is working on a few steps for the auto industry. “Government is conscious on the need to respond to the slowdown in the auto sector,” she said. The auto industry is a big job creating industry and reported a 23 per cent drop in sales, lowest since 199798 is in the grip of a severe slowdown has evoked a lot of concern. Responding to a query over GST rate cut for auto industry, Sitharaman said it is a matter to be decided by the GST council. 9/11 BROUGHT HOME HORRORS OF TERROR TO US
At least 117 people of Indian origin were among those remembered as the 9/11 victims ARUL LOUIS, NEW YORK
A
t 8.46 a.m. on Wednesday, time stood still across the US when the nation remembers the terrorist attacks that killed 2,996 people 18 years ago. At least 117 people of Indian origin were among those remembered when the names of the 9/11 victims were solemnly intoned during the annual commemoration of the Al Qaeda terror attack which will start at the precise time when the Northern Tower of the World Trade Center was struck by a hijacked jetliner. That was the moment that profoundly changed nation and brought South Asia and international terrorism to the fore in the US and across the world. That was the moment the US lost its innocence and realized its vulnerability to large-scale terrorism from abroad — like India and other countries had been experiencing. The true horrors of terrorism traceable to Pakistan was brought home to the US by the war on America launched that day by the Al Qaeda, which worked under the patronage of the Taliban that controlled Afghanistan and Pakistan. Besides the twin towers of the World Trade Centre, the citadel of the US military, the Pentagon, was attacked and another aiming for either the White House or the Congress was thwarted when passengers overpowered the hijackers
9/11 reminds world of an ongoing threat NEW DELHI: The horrendous attack on the Twin Towers at New York eighteen years ago by a band of Al Qaeda terrorists sent out on a suicide mission in the name of Jehad, remains a reference point for the international community even today in evaluating the threat that Islamic radicals continue to pose for all democratic nations. While the US no doubt is engaged in reevaluating the scenario following the failure of the year-long negotiations its representative Zalmay Khalizad had with Taliban on Afghanistan, the threat of this new terror rooted in Islamic fundamentalism is on top of the national security agenda, particularly for India. The US clearly overlooked three things. First, that before 9/11 Pakistan had no problem with Islamic radicals and the wide network of Deobandi Madrasas churning out Taliban had been a feature of the socio-religious scene in that country. When the 'war on terror' was launched by the US-led world coalition against the new global terror following 9/11, Pakistan had to be coerced into joining it — India had
come on board already — and as the years rolled on it became clear that Pakistan had been duplicitous about taking on Al Qaeda and Taliban who had been its close allies in Afghanistan. Meanwhile, taking advantage of the recognition it got from the American policy makers as a 'front line' ally in the 'war on terror' Pakistan stepped up India specific cross border terrorism using outfits like LeT, Jaish-e-Mohammad and Hizbul
Mujahideen that had been traditionally under its control. It took advantage of the US administration making a distinction between 'good terrorists' and 'bad terrorists' for reasons of the American self interest during the war against Islamic radicals. President Donald Trump has finally called the Pak bluff and much to the relief of India declared upfront that Pakistan was providing safe haven to the entire range of Islamic militants and terrorists. —IANS
and crashed the jet in a field. Facing the wrath of Washington, the military dictator Pervez Musharraf switched sides outwardly allowing the US access to facilities and routes in the nation as it
rained vengeance on Al Qaeda and the Taliban. But playing a double game Pakistan proteted Osama bin Laden, the leader of the Al Qaeda, and the leadership of the Taliban, giving
them safe havens to continue their attacks on the US and allied troops in Afghanistan and run terrorist operations around the world. It was nearly a decade later that the US would track him down to

his Pakistan home near major military facilities in Abottabad and take him down. Meanwhile, with Pakistan’s role as the international patron of terrorism was exposed to the world and it began a spiral of distrust and isolation. Although there was some talk in 2001 of India joining the US intervention in Afghanistan, then-Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee wisely desisted the move. The wisdom of the decision is clear to see now with the US coming around a full circle and trying to make peace with the Taliban after being bogged down there for nearly 18 years in what is now America’s longest war after Bush’s misjudgements and a diversion into Iraq. The peace negotiations again hit the shoals of deceit when the Taliban continued to attack US troops, killing one of them last week, while a deal was in it its final stages. President Donald Trump cancelled a grand show he had planned to showcase an agreement that would have enabled him to redeem an election pledge of ending the Afghanistan war and bringing US troops home. As far as the impact of 9/11 on Indians in the US is concerned, diplomats at the Indian consulate in New York in 2002 said the number of victims of Indiandescent was 117 among the 2,606 killed at the World Trade Center. Officially, the number of India citizens killed is 41, with others holding other passports.

n a show of strength, about 12,000 Vokkaligas of the politically-dominant community in Karnataka staged a massive rally to protest the arrest of Congress leader D.K. Shivakumar by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on September 3 in a money laundering case, a party official said on Wednesday. “The 5 km long rally from National College in the southern suburbs to Freedom Park in the city central was peaceful and the response was overwhelming, as thousands of Vokkaligas protested Shivakumar’s arrest and demanded his release forthwith,” party official Ravi Gowda told IANS here. The Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) also joined the rally along with hundreds of pro-Kannada activists to express solidarity with Shivaku-

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah are hell-bent on taking revenge on Shivakumar for being our party’s trouble-shooter and consolidating the Vokkaligas, cutting across the party lines,” Gowda said. Elaborate security arrangements were made en route and additional police personnel were deployed at the venues to prevent any untoward incident. Naidu under house arrest, victims evicted from Guntur AMARAVATI: Tension gripped Andhra Pradesh capital Amaravati and other parts of Guntur district on Wednesday as former Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu (in picture) was placed under house while police evicted victims of alleged attacks by the ruling YSRCP from a TDP camp. The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) President was kept under house arrest in Amaravati while scores of party leaders and activists heading towards Guntur town for a protest march were arrested by the police. Police did not allow Naidu to come out of his house at Undavalli as he was about to leave for Guntur town to lead the ‘Chalo Atamakur’ stir. Tension prevailed around Naidu’s house as TDP leaders coming to meet him were prevented from entering the house. Naidu’s son Nara Lokesh, who came out of the house, lodged his protest over the police action.
The police later locked the main gate of Naidu’s house from outside after he tried to come out in his car. Naidu, who sat on in his car for half an hour, condemned the police action. “Today is the dark day for democracy,” he told reporters. The TDP chief alleged that Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy is murdering the democracy by resorting to house arrest and arrests of TDP leaders who wanted to participate in a peaceful rally. The official said that Aishwarya will also be questioned about investment of several crores on her name. In his 2018 election affidavit, Shivakumar had declared Rs 618 crore assets and Rs 108 crore properties in the name of his daughter. Kerala marks 26-dish ‘Onam sadhya’ IANS, THIRUVANANTHAPURAM
I
rrespective of caste, creed or religion, practically every household in Kerala, rich or poor, the one common thing was the traditional vegetarian 26-dish Onam lunch, more popularly called ‘Onam sadhya’ on the occasion of Onam festival celebrated across the state on Wednesday. Onam, is the traditional harvest festival of Kerala and of the three most important days, Thiru Onam, the second day of the Onam festival, falls on Wednesday. Even though most households go for the vegetarian lunch on the first second and third Onam, Thiru Onam which verily is the mother of all vegetarian meals in the state. The only way that the sadhya becomes complete is when it’s eaten from the plantain leaf, with hands and it’s a perfect 10 out of 10 if its eaten seated on the floor, which, has now become a rarity. Incidentally, old-timers are very particular that the 26-dish lunch is served on the leaf in a very strict

order and there is an order for serving the curries poured on to the rice, too. The mouth-watering lunch includes chips, pappads, various preparation of vegetables, a good number of pickles both sweet and sour, the traditional aviyal, sambar, dal served along with a small quantity of ghee, rasam, two different preparations of buttermilk, a chutney powder prepared from grated coconut and not to mention a series
of payasams eaten either straight or mixed with a ripe small plantain. Onam also brings out sartorial changes to practically every Keralite and eating the lunch in it, is another feature of the day. While the ladies prefer to wear the traditional set, mundu, it almost looks like the saree, which is a single-piece dress, the younger ones are mostly spotted in the now rarely seen, the traditional skirt (pavada) and blouse.

obert Mugabe’s family on Friday said they were shocked at not having been consulted by the country’s government about arrangements for the funeral of the late Zimbabwean President who died last week. The 95-year-old former leader died on September 6 at a hospital in Singapore where he was being treated for prolonged illness, the BBC reported. In a statement, Mugabe’s family said that his body will be displayed in his home village of Kutama on Sunday night, and will be buried at a private ceremony on September 16 or 17. The government had wanted him

to be interred at the National Heroes monument in Harare. “We note with extreme concern
the manner with which the government of Zimbabwe has developed the programme for the funeral of
the late Robert Gabriel Mugabe without consulting his immediate family who were tasked with communicating his last wishes in regard to his funeral and burial,” the family said in a statement. “As his immediate family, we have also observed with shock that the government of Zimbabwe is attempting to coerce us to accept a programme for the funeral and burial of the late Robert Gabriel Mugabe which is contrary to his wishes on how he wished to have his mortal remains interred.” Mugabe was Zimbabwe’s first leader after the country became independent in 1980. He held on to power for almost four decades before being ousted in a coup in 2017.

But you cannot rule out the possibility of accidental war due to the constant increase in tension. If things continue like this, then anything can happen.” Qureshi, who on Tuesday appealed to the Human Rights Council to launch an international investigation into the situation in Kashmir, told reporters that he had spoken to Bachelet and had invited
her to visit both the Indian and Pakistani parts of the region. “She should visit both places and report as objectively as she can so that the world knows what the true... situation is,” he said. Qureshi ruled out the possibility of bilateral talks to resolve the tensions. “In this environment and with the mindset that we see in New Delhi today, I do not see any room for a bilateral engagement,” he said, adding that a multilateral forum or a third-party mediator would likely be needed.

Johnson denies lying to Queen LONDON: UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Thursday denied lying to the Queen over the advice he gave her over the fiveweek suspension of the Boris Johnson British Parliament. Johnson was speaking to the media after Scotland’s highest civil court ruled on Wednesday that the shutdown was unlawful, the BBC reported. Asked whether he had lied to the monarch about his reasons for the suspension, he replied: “Absolutely not... .” Johnson insisted that the UK “will be ready” to leave the European Union (EU) by the current October 31 deadline without an agreement “if we have to”.

Mohammad Faisal, spokesperson of the Pakistan Foreign Ministry, at his weekly media briefing said: “There will be no other meeting with Kulbhushan Jadhav.” Pakistan had on September 2 granted India consular access to Jadhav, for the first time since his arrest in 2016. Indian students will be able extend stay in UK for 2 years IANS, NEW DELHI/LONDON
T
here is good news for students going to Britain for studying as the UK government on Wednesday announced the reintroduction of the two-year poststudy work visa, expanding opportunities for talented international students to build successful careers in the country. The new “Graduate” route will launch for the 2020/21 intake of students to university. The two-year post-study work visa was earlier scrapped by then Home Secretary Theresa May in 2012. The reintroduction of the programme is expected to boost the number of students going to Britain significantly.
The reintroduction of the two-year post-study work visa is expected to boost the number of students going to Britain significantly.
The new ‘Graduate’ route will be open to all international students including those from India - who have valid UK immigration status as a student and have successfully com-
pleted a course of study in any subject at the undergraduate level or above at an approved UK higher education provider. The visa will allow eligible stu-
dents to work, or look for work, in any career or position of their choice, for two years after completing their studies. “The new Graduate Route will mean talented international students, whether in science and maths or technology and engineering, can study in the UK and then gain valuable work experience as they go on to build successful careers,” Home Secretary Priti Patel said in a statement. “This is fantastic news for Indian students, who will now be able to spend more time in the UK after completing their degree, allowing them to gain further skills and experience,” said Dominic Asquith, British High Commissioner to India.
Indian students coming to study in the UK reached almost 22,000 in the year ending June 2019. This was a 42 per cent increase on the previous year - and almost 100 per cent higher than three years ago. This announcement follows the creation of a new fast-track visa route for scientists and the removal of the limit on PhD students moving into the skilled work visa route, which collectively aim to cement the UK as a science superpower and a world leader in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) sector. Almost half of all Indian students (almost 130,000 since 2008/9) heading to the UK in the last ten years chose a STEM subject.

Forced to stand up at Delhi airport:
Wheelchair-bound woman
UAE court drops case against Kerala politician

A
wheelchair-bound US citizen, who holds an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card, on Monday alleged that she was “harassed” by a CISF woman constable at the Indira Gandhi International Airport here as she was unable to stand up for checking. Virali Modi, motivational speaker and disability rights activist, said she was travelling to Mumbai from Delhi when she was subjected to harassment. Paralyzed after a spinal cord injury in 2006, she said she has never had to face such discrimination or harassment at international airports. In a complaint to the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), the paramilitary force mandated to provide security at almost 60 airports across India, Modi said: “I am disabled from the last 13 years. I am unable to walk and stand. I was trav-

elling today (Monday) from IGI Airport, Terminal 3 on SpiceJet Flight (SG8723) to Mumbai.” Because of her disability, she said, she had surrendered her personal wheelchair to the check-in counter as cargo. “I had appointed a porter to help
me to my seat on the flight. Upon reaching the security check, I had the worst experience with one of your female CISF (personnel). She started forcing me to stand up, even though the porter and I told her multiple times that I could not stand. She refused to do my check.”
Modi said that despite showing her passport which proves that she travels internationally even after being a wheelchair-user, the CISF staffer went on to accuse her of “acting and doing drama”. “When I confronted her she started yelling at me...” Expressing disappointment at the CISF personnel’s behavior, Modi asked: “Is this how the CISF is trained to handle people with disabilities? If so then it’s a shame on our government. I should be treated with respect and sensitivity. This behaviour is absurd and I request you to please look into this matter and take the necessary action so this doesn’t happen to anyone with a disability.” She also said that a few years ago, she faced a similar incident at the Mumbai airport where the CISF staff insisted she stand up. When she said she couldn’t, one of the women troopers pulled so hard at her leg that she had to be hospitalized.

Besides the Indian workers, 75 were from Bangladesh and others from Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, the Philippines and Egypt, The Khaleej Times said in the report. “We have been hearing this for a while - that things will be sorted out. This news has made this festival very special now. We have been stuck here for more than a year. And now we will soon be able to go home.”
DUBAI/THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala politician Thushar Vellapally, who was arrested last month in the UAE in a cheque default case, on Sunday got a full discharge in the case. After Vellapally, who heads the Bharath Dharma Jana Sena (BDJS) - the second-biggest constituent of the NDA in Kerala, was arrested last month, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had written to External Affairs Minister S. Jaisankar on the issue, while the state BJP leadership maintained silence. Though Vellapally secured bail the next day on August 22, his passport was impounded and he was asked to stay back till the case is settled. Following a few hearings, it came to light that the case did not have merit and on Sunday, the court in UAE’s Ajman cleared Vellapally in the case and his passport was returned. He is expected to return to Kerala on Sunday itself. The complainant in the case, N. Abdullah, who hails from Kerala’s Thrissur district, had worked as a sub-contractor in the UAE for Vellapally and complained that when Vellapally’s cheque, given almost a decade back, was presented a few months back, it bounced. In the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, Vellapally has unsuccessfully contested against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi from Wayanad constituency. —IANS

fter a series of flops over the past few years, Sonakshi Sinha is finally part of a big hit. Mission Mangal, the Independence Day multistarrer release that features her in the cast, has been declared a superhit by the trade after a Rs 193.14 crore domestic haul at the last count. “I feel great. For me at least, it (success) has been long overdue. It feels nice. It’s a very special film and working with the team was a wonderful experience. It is a very positive feeling. Hats off to those scientists who actually made it happen, and went through so much of difficulties and struggles,” Sonakshi told IANS, adding that she was always confident about “Mission Mangal”. “Honestly, I did expect the film to be successful because it talks about a very big achievement of our country. I feel, if you make a film on patriotism and the subject is good, it always works,” she said.

t seems like working with superstar Shah Rukh Khan is on the to-do list of Vicky Kaushal, who is Bollywoods latest star. The 31-year-old actor has shared a throwback photo of his childhood days on his Instagram story, where he can be seen posing with Shah Rukh. The picture seems to be clicked on the set of SRK’s 2001 historical drama Asoka. Well, this just makes one half of the collage. The other half comprises a photo of the two actors performing together at a recent award ceremony. Vicky captioned the image, “Dreams do come true”. new poster and a group photo of the upcoming Priyanka Chopra-starrer, The Sky Is Pink, is being attacked by netizens because it features actress Zaira Wasim. The young Kashmiri actress has drawn ire of movie buffs for announcing a while back that she was quitting films owing to her religious beliefs. Priyanka had tweeted a photo of the cast, including Zaira, at a beach, in the wake of promoting the film ahead of its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) on September 13. However, social media is not very amused. They feel it’s all a publicty stunt on Zaira’s part, to first announce her retirement from films citing religion, and then coming up to promote a new film. One Twitter user wrote: “Here #ZairaWasim is on tour promoting her next film. Last I heard she left Bollywood because her faith doesn’t allow.” Another user demanded a boycott on The Sky Is Pink.

t’s filmmaker Anurag Kashyap’s birthday and the perfect gift for him would probably be a good pair of shoes as he loves owning them. “I don’t know how many pairs of shoes I have. I think more than 200. I go for the comfort and the look. Yes, I am a compulsive shopper. And I am doing nothing. Everybody says that I should become busy, otherwise I would buy shoes. So when I am not writing or not working, I buy shoes. Shoes are good therapy for the soul,” he had said. “I am very proud of my shoes and everyday, I choose what shoe I am gonna wear today. You have to cross shoes to get to my bed. There is no space for shoes. So, half the reason to move to the new house is so that we can organise it in a way. There’s a whole room that will have a walk-in wardrobe of shoes,” he had said in an interview to Film Companion. — All stories from IANS

OTT’s quality can only be checked with time: Apte Radhika credits streaming platforms for generating employment SIDDHI JAIN, NEW DELHI
N
ever the demure damsel, Radhika Apte refuses to be a Bollywood typecast. She has played powerful characters across industries and mediums, but it’s her roles in Netflix’s Ghoul, Sacred Games and Lust Stories’ that have led to her being hailed as the “queen of the OTT (over-the-top) platforms”. “Acting across mediums does not change things much. What does change is the viewership, people across the world have viewed these shows. The digital medium is very fast. It’s faster than films, because this content is in people’s hands all the time, and

that really makes a difference,” the 33-year-old actor told IANSlife on the sidelines of a Lecoanet Hemant fashion show, where she walked the ramp. Radhika credits streaming platforms for generating employment. But are they are also producing superior content? “Some actors have got outstanding parts. All the OTT platforms seem to be working on big productions only. I hope it’s not just a transfer (of content) from Bollywood to them. Let’s wait for a year or two. Consistency can only be checked over time. Right now, the platform is superb. There’s no doubt about that. “The budgets are great, production and systems amazing, and
work ethics in the right place.” The consistency over time also needs to be tested for women characters, she points out. “At the moment, the digital platforms seem to be giving women more court to play with many more and stronger protagonists.” Video-streaming services may be eyeing a larger share of the Indian entertainment market pie through cheaper mobile-only plans and other such launches, but the Vellore-born actor does not see them overtaking films any time soon. The advent of Netflix in India hasn’t reflected in any change in the number of box-office successes or their earnings so far, she emphasises.

S Ayushmann Khurrana
MUMBAI: Actor Ayushmann Khurrana says there is a vested interest for him to take up Dream Girl, which is a massy rom-com. “I’m all for great commercial cinema that allows me to reach out to a much wider audience base and engage with them. I realized that by doing such masala movies, I’m actually widening the reach for my other films that I often do to spark a social conversation,” he said. “If they like me in such commercial Bollywood cinema, they will most probably come back to see a project that could be extremely relevant and topical and important for people to see and ponder over. That would give me the fulfilment I seek by being an artiste. So yes, there is a vested interest for me to do Dream Girl because by doing so, I can pull a lot more people for my socially relevant films,” added the Article 15 actor. Ayushmann, known for movies like AndhaDhun, Vicky Donor and Badhaai Ho, calls Dream Girl his most commercial, masala film to date. “I have always experimented with genres, with roles and scripts and I wanted to do something a little bit out there this time and have a lot of fun with it,” he said. —IANS
treaming giant Netflix has inked a multi-year exclusive deal with filmmaker Karan Johar’s digital content company Dharmatic Entertainment to create a broad range of new fiction and non-fiction series and films for Netflix members. “I’m super excited about the projects we already have in development and the limitless possibilities ahead. To create universal stories from India that the world discovers is an incredible and unprecedented opportunity,” Johar said. Netflix and Johar first worked together in 2018 for Lust Stories.
Netflix and Johar first worked together in 2018 for “Lust Stories”.

With Netflix as the new storytelling home for Dharmatic Entertainment, I have the highest hopes for what we can do together,” said Apoorva Mehta, CEO, Dharma Productions. “Our vision is to create differentiated stories across diverse genres and we can’t wait to craft and usher many more remarkable series and films into the world with Netflix.”
‘Chhichhore’ movie is a winner all the way
C
hhichhore” is an obvious, all-round winner. It is a fun film with a not-too-complicated message, which fulfils the primary Bollywood objective of pleasing crowds. Despite riding clich’s, it is impressively written, directed and acted out — which should satisfy most critics. And since the effort is likely to please crowds and critics alike, the outcome should keep the film trade happy. Dangal maker Nitesh Tiwari’s new film tick-marks several boxes. It is topical in the way it highlights the ever-increasing pressure to excel in
Film: Chhichhore; Cast: Sushant Singh Rajput, Shraddha Kapoor, Varun Sharma; Direction: Nitesh Tiwari; Rating: *** & 1/2 entrance exams that teenagers face. It is sweetly nostalgic in the way it sets up a rollercoaster campus ride, and melodramatic in doling out its coming-of-age theme. Beneath the boisterous laugh moments lies a quiet comment, too: In our mad chase of aspirations and ambitions, we often ignore a basic truth - the

most important thing in life is life itself, and the necessity to live it to the fullest. These themes have all been elaborately covered in mainstream cinema over the years, so why does Chhichhore stand out? Simply because of the finesse with which Tiwari and his co-writers (Piyush
Gupta and Nikhil Malhotra) bring alive the tale. The screenplay unfolds without fuss, and yet leaves an impact. Another area where the writing shines is the dialogues. Insanely hilarious to subtly dramatic, the lingo never loses touch with realism. —Vinayak Chakravorty

The research published in the journal PLOS ONE, has also found that we burn 45 kilocalories more, per six-hour period while standing compared to lying or sitting. “If we take steps to combat a sedentary lifestyle by making small lifestyle changes, such as spending more time standing, this could reduce the risk of developing diseases such as obesity or Type 2 diabetes,” said study lead author Francisco J. of smell can influence the image we have in our mind of our body and on the feelings and emotions towards it,” said study lead by author Giada Brianza from the University of Sussex. The research project builds upon recent research in cognitive neuroscience and human-computer interaction (HCI), which revealed technology can change people’s body image perception (BIP) by stimulating a range of senses. The experiment consists of two
consecutive studies. In the first study, participants sat at a computer screen while olfactory stimuli were delivered and were then asked to rate the perceived scent using a Visual Analogue Scale comparing it to spiky or rounded shapes, hot or cold, high or low pitch and thin and thick body silhouettes. In the follow-up study, participants stood on a wooden board, wearing headphones, a pair of motion-capture sensors and the shoe-based device which enhanced the pitch of their own footsteps. Participants were instructed to walk on the spot while olfactory stimuli were released and then asked to adjust the size of a 3-D avatar using a body visualization tool according to their perception of themselves. They also answered a questionnaire about perceived speed, body feelings and emotions. The researchers found the scent of lemon resulted in participants’ feeling lighter, while the vanilla scent made them feel heavier.
Sex, height may influence how you see phones NEW YORK: Sex and height appear to influence how people flex their neck when viewing handheld devices, according to a new study. With increased phone and tablet ownership in the US comes increased levels of neck flexion compared to desktop or laptop computer use. According to the findings published in the journal Clinical Anatomy, the researchers at the University of Arkansas looked at neck and jaw postures when using handheld electronic devices. Shorter individuals bend their necks differently than men and taller individuals; this could be related to the higher incidence of neck and jaw pain experienced by women. Some evidence shows that using
these devices, such as cellphones or tablets, in certain postures may influence both the neck and jaw, eventually causing the development of pain in both. For the study, researchers asked 22 participants (10 female and 12 male) to hold and use electronic devices in five different postures while an X-ray was taken. —IANS

esearchers have found that taking hot yoga classes lowered the blood pressure of adults with elevated or stage 1 hypertension. While there is evidence of regular, room-temperature yoga’s positive effect on blood pressure, little is known about hot yoga’s potential impact on blood pressure, said researchers who presented the study at Hypertension 2019 Scientific Sessions in the US. “The results of our study start the conversation that hot yoga could be feasible and effective in
terms of reducing blood pressure without medication,” said study author Stacy Hunter, Assistant Professor at Texas State University. Hot yoga is a modern practice, typically offered in a hot, humid atmosphere, with room temperatures around 105 degrees Fahrenheit. For the study, the research team recruited 10 men and women, between ages 20-65 years. Participants had either elevated blood pressure (systolic blood pressure between 120 mmHg to 129 mmHg and diastolic pressure less than 80 mmHg) or stage 1 hypertension (130 mmHg to 139 mmHg systolic and 80 mmHg to 89
mmHg diastolic pressure.) The research team randomly assigned five participants to take 12 weeks of three times-weekly hour-long hot yoga classes and they assigned the other five to a control group of no yoga classes. They compared the average blood pressures of the two groups after the 12 weeks. The researchers looked at average 24-hour blood pressure readings, as well as perceived stress and vascular function of participants in both groups. They found systolic blood pressure dropped from an average 126 mmHg at the study’s start to 121 mmHg after 12 weeks of hot yoga.

While one would think that he would look to switch off and enjoy life off the field, Pandya’s love for the game actually saw him train twice a day for the last month and also fly down to Baroda to work on his skills as it was raining in Mumbai. Speaking to IANS, on the sidelines of another gruelling session, Pandya spoke on the challenges ahead with the series against the Proteas, working on his fitness, managing his workload as an allrounder, being the X-factor in this

Eating mushrooms cuts prostate cancer risk: Study TOKYO: Researchers have found that consuming mushrooms three times a week cuts the risk of developing prostate cancer in males. The study, published in the International Journal of Cancer, found an inverse relationship between mushroom consumption and the development of prostate cancer among middle-aged and elderly Japanese men. For the findings, a total of 36,499 men, aged 40-79 years who participated in the Miyagi Cohort Study in 1990 and the Ohsaki Cohort Study in 1994, were followed for a median of 13.2 years. According to the researchers from Tohoku University in Japan, during follow-up, 3.3 per cent of the participants developed prostate cancer. Mushroom consumption once
or twice a week was associated with an eight per cent lower risk of prostate cancer and consumption three or more times per week was associated with a 17 per cent lower risk. However, according to the study lead author Shu Zhang: “the mechanism of the beneficial effects of mushrooms on prostate cancer remains uncertain.” —IANS
“Our findings suggest that short people might present with higher cardio-metabolic risk factor levels and have higher diabetes risk compared with tall people,” said study researcher from the German Institute of Human Nutrition, Ger-
many. For this study, the research team looked at more than 2,500 middle-aged men and women in Germany from a pool of about 26,000 people, after adjusting for age, lifestyle, education and waist circumference. The study found that the risk of future type 2 diabetes was lower by 41 per cent for men and 33 per cent for women for each 10cm larger height, when adjusted for age, potential lifestyle confounders, education and waist circumference. The association of height with diabetes risk appeared to be stronger among normal-weight individuals, with an 86 per cent lower risk per 10cm larger height in men, and 67 per cent lower risk per 10cm larger height in women.
AI detects heart failure with 100% accuracy LONDON: Researchers have developed a neural network approach that can accurately identify congestive heart failure with 100 per cent accuracy through analysis of just one raw electrocardiogram (ECG) heartbeat. The researchers have worked to tackle these important concerns by using Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) - hierarchical neural networks highly effective in recognizing patterns and structures in data. “Our model delivered 100 per cent accuracy: by checking just one heartbeat we are able detect whether or not a person has heart failure,” said study researcher Sebastiano Massaro, Associate Professor at the University of Surrey in the UK. Published in Biomedical Signal Processing and Control Journal, the research drastically improves existing CHF detection methods typically focused on heart rate variability that, whilst effective, are time-consuming and prone to errors. —IANS
PTSD ups ovarian cancer risk W IANS, NEW YORK
omen who experienced six or more symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) at some point in life have a greater risk of developing ovarian cancer compared to women who never had any PTSDs, says a new study. The study published in the journal Cancer Research, also found that the link between PTSD and ovarian cancer remained for the most aggressive forms of ovarian cancer. “In light of these findings, we need to understand whether successful treatment of PTSD would reduce this risk and whether other types of stress are also risk factors for ovarian cancer,” said co-author Andrea Roberts from Harvard University. To better understand how
Women with trauma and 4-5 sympyoms were also at an elevated risk.
PTSD may influence ovarian cancer risk, researchers analysed data from the Nurses’ Health Study II, which tracked the health of tens of thousands of women between 19892015 through biennial questionnaires and medical records. Partici-
pants were asked about ovarian cancer diagnosis in each questionnaire, and information was validated through a review of medical records. After adjusting for various factors associated with ovarian cancer, including oral contraceptive use and smoking, the researchers found that women who experienced six-seven symptoms associated with PTSD were at a significantly higher risk of ovarian cancer than women who had never been exposed to trauma. Women with trauma and four-five symptoms were also at an elevated risk, but the risk did not reach statistical significance. The study also showed that women who experienced six-seven symptoms associated with PTSD were at a significantly higher risk of developing the high-grade serous histotype of ovarian cancer.

mice),” said study author Kathleen Caron from the University of North Carolina. “We also discovered that e-cigarette usage throughout pregnancy changed the long-term health and metabolism of female offspring imparting lifelong, second-generation effects on the growing foetus,” Caron added. For the study published in the Journal of the Endocrine Society, the researchers used a mouse model to examine whether e-cigarette exposure impairs fertility and offspring health.
After exposure to e-cigarette vapour, female mice showed decreased embryo implantation and a significant delay in the onset of pregnancy. Female offspring exposed to e-cigarettes in utero also failed to gain as much weight as those of control mice. “These findings are important because they change our views on the perceived safety of e-cigarettes as alternatives to traditional cigarettes before and during pregnancy,” Caron added. E-cigarettes are driving increases in tobacco product use among youth.

Voter-Card Mailing: ‘Join our email list!’ BY A STAFF WRITER CHICAGO,IL- Voter cards are going out to Chicago’s 1.5 million registered voters with a new appeal: Join the 300,000 who are on the Election Board’s email list. The Chicago Election Board has emails for roughly one-fifth of the voters, and most of for younger voters who have used online voter registration in the last five years. The majority of “legacy” voters who have been on the rolls longer do not have email addresses on file. “The invitation is going out to all of our voters with their new voter cards, just in case someone may want to provide a more current email address,” said Chicago Election Board Chairwoman Marisel A. Hernandez. Inside the mailing, each voter will find a unique code to use when submitting an email at chicagoelections.gov/email “Email addresses let us reach out to voters at election time to invite them to Vote By Mail,” Hernandez said. “More
importantly, email addresses are increasingly important parts of our contingency plans, in the event we have to alert voters in a particular area of an emergency change, such as a precinct polling place.”
Hernandez noted that the Chicago Election Board’s privacy policy is to not share any voter’s email address with any outside organizations. The Board uses the email addresses only for election-related business.

Queens Acting District Attorney John M. Ryan declared Aug. 30, that a previous certified true estate salesperson, Reshmi Maharaj, 53, living in Richmond Hill, Queens, has been sentenced to up to 6 decades in jail for thieving almost $600,000 in payments from potential owners for the purported “short sale” of numerous Queens and Brooklyn attributes in 2015. According to Ryan, Maharaj duped the victims into believing that they were making payments to both safe their dream property or obtain a home as an expenditure chance. Alternatively, she pocketed their money and used it on personal objects. Justice Lewis sentenced Maharaj Aug. 29, to 2 to 6 decades in jail. According to testimony at the demo, Maharaj approved a amount of deposits, totaling $55,500, from a possible purchaser for the obtain of a house on Lefferts Boulevard in Richmond Hill, Queens. In April 2015, a 2nd prospective purchaser gave Maharaj four checks, totaling $34,500, for a residence she introduced as a “short sale” on Sutter Avenue in South Ozone Park, Queens. This same purchaser then paid out Maharaj an supplemental lump sum of $130,000 in purchase to safe the obtain of the home.

American Airlines Mechanic Charged with Sabotaging Flight BY A STAFF WRITER MIAMI, FL- A mechanic for American Airlines has been arrested and accused by federal authorities of tampering with the navigation equipment on a plane shortly before it was scheduled to depart with 150 passengers onboard. The Miami-to-Nassau flight was grounded just before takeoff in July, authorities said. The mechanic, Abdul-Majeed Marouf Ahmed Alani of Tracy, Calif., was upset that contract negotiations between his union and the airline had stalled, and he wanted to delay the flight with the hopes that he would make overtime pay, federal prosecutors allege. Alani was previously fired by Alaska Airlines for making maintenance mistakes, according to court documents. According to federal investigators, Alani, 60, inserted and glued a piece of foam into the air data module system on American Airlines Flight 2834 on July 17, preventing
Indian Origin Woman Sentenced for Duping Home Buyers
it from functioning normally. The system, which sits beneath the cockpit, is responsible for monitoring an aircraft’s speed, pitch and other flight data. Cre w members in the cockpit received an error message just as the Boeing 737-800 was approaching the runway and decided to abort the takeoff, authorities said.
“Alani stated that his intention was not to cause harm to the aircraft or its passengers,” said a criminal complaint affidavit filed in federal court in Miami. “Alani explained to law enforcement that he was upset at the stalled contract dispute between the union workers and American Airlines, and that this dispute had affected him financially. Alani claimed that he tampered with the target aircraft in order to cause a delay or have the flight canceled in anticipation of obtaining overtime work.” Alani was taken into custody Thursday and is expected to appear in federal court in Miami on Friday. It is not immediately clear whether he has an attorney. He has been suspended from American Airlines, a company spokesman said. Formal charges against Alani will be announced on Sept. 20 during his arraignment. According to federal prosecutors, he could face up to 20 years in jail.
Ahmed Hassan Dar BY A STAFF WRITER JERSEY CITY, NJ- A Jersey City killer who avoided possibly going to prison for life when he took a plea deal four years ago is in trouble with the law again. Ahmed Hassan Dar, 25, was thrown back in prison after Edison police say he had drugs on him and a loaded handgun was found in a car in which he was a passenger early morning. Dar — on parole after serving four years of a five-year sentence for the 2013 shooting death of Roman Kaploun in Jersey City — was charged with weapons possession, possession and distribution of heroin and possession of drug paraphernalia. Dar was facing a possible life sentence in 2015 after being charged with murder and weapons offenses. He was released from prison on May 2, 2018. Dar was arrested Tuesday at 2:30 a.m. after a black Nissan Maxima being driven erratically on Route 1 was pulled over. Officers found a loaded Smith & Wesson semi-automatic handgun, numerous wax folds of heroin and more than $500 in cash in the vehicle, police said.
