seats, some of the victors being disgruntled Congress veterans who had joined the saffron outfit. The Congress was left with just 11 legislators, with outgoing Chief Minister Harish Rawat losing both the seats he contested, one narrowly, to his BJP opponents. “It is a monumental setback. We are disappointed with Uttar Pradesh,” Congress spokesman Sanjay Jha said. Added Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit: “Our party is looking confused.” But other party leaders rushed to defend Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi, saying he alone must not be blamed for the rout in Uttar Pradesh, where the Congress, having become in recent decades an alsoran, aligned with the Samajwadi Party just before the election. In Uttar Pradesh, the BJP’s success rate enveloped both urban and rural areas and appeared to demolish traditional caste equations.

Trump ‘vows to fight’ as judge halts new travel order
Trump to ask $1.5bn for border wall
The judge lambasted the government for asserting that since the ban did not apply to all Muslims, it could not be construed as discriminating against Muslims IANS, WASHINGTON
A
federal district court judge in Hawaii has issued a temporary restraining order against President Donald Trumps new travel ban, hours before it was due to take effect. The move was slammed by the President as “unprecedented judicial overreach”. In a 43-page ruling this week, US District Court Judge Derrick Watson concluded that the new executive order failed to pass legal muster at this stage and the state had established “a strong likelihood of success” on their claims of religious discrimination, CNN reported this week. Watson wrote that any “reasonable, objective observer” would view even the new order as “issued with a purpose to disfavor a particular religion, in spite of its stated, religiously neutral purpose.” He lambasted the government, in particular, for asserting that because the ban did not apply to all Muslims in the world, it could not be construed as discriminating against Muslims, reported the
Washington Post. Trump decried the ruling during a rally Wednesday night in Nashville, introducing his statement as “the bad, the sad news.” “The order he blocked was a watered-down version of the first one,” Trump said, as the crowd booed the news. “This is, in the opinion of many, an unprecedented judicial overreach,” he added, before pledging to take the issue to the Supreme
Court if necessary. “We’re going to fight this terrible ruling. We’re going to take this as far as we need to, right up to the Supreme Court. We’re going to win and we’re going to keep our citizens safe,” the President said at the rally. Trump’s new entry ban had suspended the US refugee programme for 120 days and halted for 90 days the issuance of new visas to people from six Muslim-majority coun-
tries: Iran, Somalia, Sudan, Yemen, Libya and Syria. Unlike the previous executive order, the new one removed Iraq from the list of banned countries, exempted those with green cards and visas and removed a provision that arguably prioritizes certain religious minorities. The new ban was announced earlier this month and was set to take effect Thursday. “The illogic of the government’s contentions is palpable. The notion that one can demonstrate animus towards any group of people only by targeting all of them at once is fundamentally flawed,” Watson wrote in his ruling. “Equally flawed is the notion that the executive order cannot be found to have targeted Islam because it applies to all individuals in the six referenced countries,” Watson added. “It is undisputed, using the primary source upon which the Government itself relies, that these six countries have overwhelmingly Muslim populations that range from 90.7% to 99.8%.” The Justice Department said it will defend the new travel ban.
WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump will ask Congress for $1.5 billion to begin work on the wall he promised to build along the Mexico border. The money is part of a $30 billion supplemental spending request being sent to lawmakers, according to White House budget director Mick Mulvaney. Mulvaney told the media on Wednesday that the money would be used to begin developing technologies and locations for the wall, The Hill magazine reported. The request also boosts funding for defense and other border security measures Trump has called for as part of a push to ramp up deportations of people living illegally in the US. “I think the funding provides for a couple of pilot cases... different kinds of barriers in different kinds of places,” the budget director said. “We try and find the most costefficient, the safest and also the most effective border protections.” —IANS
‘Trump wrote off $100 million in business losses’ Trump paid $38 million in taxes in 2005: White House
IANS, WASHINGTON
U
S President Donald Trump’s tax affairs were back in the spotlight after leaked 2005 returns showed he wrote off more than $100 million in “business losses” to reduce his federal taxes burden. The President paid $38 million in federal income tax on reported income of $150 million, an effective tax rate of 25 per cent, according to documents from Trump’s 2005 tax returns disclosed on Rachel Maddow’s MSNBC show this week. By claiming losses, Trump apparently saved millions of dollars in taxes that he would otherwise have owed, reports said. The White House responded without even waiting for the show to air, issuing a statement that seemed to confirm the authenticity of the forms as it defended Trump and assailed MSNBC for publicizing them. “You know you are desperate for
ratings when you are willing to violate the law to push a story about two pages of tax returns from over a decade ago,” a White House official said in a statement. “The dishonest media can continue to make this part of their agenda, while the President will focus on his, which includes tax reform that will benefit all Americans,” the official said.
The White House described Trump’s business losses as a “largescale depreciation for construction”, but did not elaborate, reported the New York Times. In addition to the federal income taxes in 2005, the statement said, he paid “tens of millions of dollars in other taxes, such as sales and excise taxes and employment taxes, and this illegally pub-
WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump paid $38 million in taxes on more than his $150 million income in 2005, the White House said in a statement. The White House released details of Trump’s tax return hours ahead of an anticipated news report, as the American cable network MSNBC host Rachel Maddow said she has obtained part of Trump’s 2005 tax forms and prepared to discuss the document, Xinhua news agency reported. “Before being elected President,
lished return proves just that”. Democrats pounced on the report, arguing that the White House’s decision to release details of Trump’s 2005 taxes before Maddow’s show undercut his past refusal
Trump was one of the most successful businessmen in the world with a responsibility to his company, his family and his employees to pay no more tax than legally required,” the White House said. “Trump paid $38 million even after taking into account large scale depreciation for construction, on an income of more than $150 million, as well as paying tens of millions of dollars in other taxes such as sales and excise taxes and employment taxes and this illegally published return proves just that,” it added.

Ominous silence before the proverbial storm in SP
Reduced to an all-time low of 47 seats in its 25th year, rumblings have begun in the erstwhile ruling party, which now has a hugely diminished aura and numbers in the 17th Vidhan Sabha MOHIT DUBEY, LUCKNOW
W
ith Holi, the Festival of colors concluding, it seems to be time for some fireworks in the Samajwadi Party (SP), which was humbled by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the just-concluded Uttar Pradesh assembly elections. Reduced to an all-time low of 47 in its 25th year, rumblings have begun in the erstwhile ruling party, which now has a hugely diminished aura and numbers in the 17th Vidhan Sabha. The first murmurs were heard even as results poured in last week and it became evident that the SP would touch a new low and the BJP a new high — a landslide of 325 seats, along with its allies. It was only after the results were announced that SP founder Mulayam Singh Yadav, who was edged out by his Chief Minister son, Akhilesh Yadav, as the national president of the party on January 1, went, for the first time, to the Janeshwar Mishra Trust — which housed the war room of the Congress and SP alliance. A stone’s throw from his sprawl-

ing 5, Vikramaditya Marg, bungalow on Panch Bangalia, the tenselooking Yadav chieftain reportedly had gone to meet with and console party workers. He, however, was there for just five-odd minutes and left when he saw his son. Akhilesh, though, is said to have hurriedly
pulled himself together and touched his father’s feet. Mulayam said nothing and just drove away. He later left for the airport and flew to Saifai, their native village, for the annual Holi celebrations, almost a ritual for the family. Akhilesh Yadav left a little later
and took the Agra-Lucknow Expressway to drive with his family to Saifai. Enroute, he met some supporters who had gathered along the route. “We will see what went wrong, do not lose heart,” he told the young men. Akhilesh, after the rout at the
hustings, rued that he never knew people would vote him out so badly despite the work done by his government in the past five years. “Main samajh gaya hoon ki vote samjhane se nahin, bahkane se milta hai,” (I’ve understood that votes are gained by pulling wool over people’s eyes) he said. He also taunted the voters by saying: “I guess people did not like the Expressway and were rather looking for a bullet train to come to Uttar Pradesh.” A reference to one of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s pet schemes. Shivpal, who won from Jaswantnagar yet again with a huge margin, now stands vindicated. During the infighting, he had openly told Akhilesh that he was on a suicidal mission with the likes of Ram Gopal Yadav and the young brigade that included Udayveer Singh, Sanjay Lathar, Sunil Singh Sajan and other close aides. Both Mulayam and Shivpal had forewarned Akhilesh about having any truck with the Congress. For now there is an ominous silence in the Yadav clan and in the SP, which, many feel, could be the proverbial calm before the storm.
AAP, Akali missteps helped Congress bloom AAP, which is believed to have cut into Akali Dal votes, ended up helping the Congress indirectly JAIDEEP SARIN, CHANDIGARH
T
he stupendous victory of the Congress in the justconcluded assembly polls in Punjab may be credited to a variety of factors, but unintended help also came from the Shiromani Akali Dal-BJP combine and new political entrant Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). More than the anti-incumbency of the 10-year rule of the Akali Dal-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) combine, it was the virtual hatred towards the Badal family on issues of corruption, drugs, mis-governance and mafia rule, and the lawdefying writ of the ‘Halqa’ (area)in-charges that the Akalis promot-
ed, which led to the decimation of the alliance. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which is believed to have cut into Akali Dal votes, too, ended up helping the Congress indirectly instead of consolidating its own position. This election was different for Punjab because the AAP had made it a triangular affair on a number of seats. Even the Akali Dal and Congress, till the very end, were wary of how the AAP would fare in the polls. In retrospect, the AAP made several mistakes, starting with the insistence of its central leadership to remote-control the Punjab campaign with leaders from other
states and the lack of faith it showed in the local leadership. That apart, not being able to project a chief ministerial face, the breakdown of talks with cricketerturned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu, questions over choice of candidates and infighting built up, over the past few months, into a situation in which the party found itself trapped. While Congress won 77 seats in the 117-member assembly, it was the Malwa belt which helped it romp home to power in style. The Congress won 40 out of the 69 seats in the Malwa belt — the region south of river Sutlej and considered agriculturally fertile.
While the Congress won an impressive 77 seats in the 117-member assembly, it was the Malwa belt which helped it romp home to power in style.
The AAP was considered the strongest in the Malwa belt, since it had won four Lok Sabha seats in the 2014 parliamentary elections and had led in 34 assembly seats in the region at that time, but it could manage to win only 18 seats in the assembly polls. Two more seats in the belt were won by AAP ally, the Lok Insaaf Party.
The Akali Dal, for which the Malwa belt was a traditional stronghold, managed to get only eight seats. Its ally BJP got only one seat in the belt. Having been out of power for a decade, the Congress win is not only important for the party in Punjab but also holds out hope for it nationally.

The Congress returned to power in Punjab after a 10-year gap. A euphoric Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) called it a “historic” verdict that would make a major impact on Indian politics even as the Congress admitted it was stunned by the scale of the verdict in favor of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. From being the third largest group in the 403-member Uttar Pradesh assembly, the BJP, powered by an aggressive campaign spearheaded by Modi, catapulted to winning a whopping 324 seats — a neverbefore showing by any party in the country’s most populous state. The victory left the ruling Samajwadi Party and its ally Congress

PANAJI/NEW DELHI: BJP leader Manohar Parrikar, who quit as the Defence Minister recently, was swornin as Goa Chief Minister for the fourth time this week winning the trust vote in the Goa assembly, with 22 MLAs supporting his government. The Congress got the support of 16 legislators. The trust vote was ordered by the Supreme Court following a petition by the Congress which alleged that Goa Governor Mridula Sinha had played a partisan role in inviting the BJP to form a government although the Congress was the single-largest party with 17 MLAs in the 40-member assembly. Speaking to reporters after being sworn-in, Parrikar said the support
garnered by the BJP was for the development of Goa. “If there was support, then why did you (Congress) not go to the Governor? The support extended to BJP to form government is only for Goa’s development,” Parrikar told reporters after the swearingin ceremony. Parrikar’s cabinet includes two ministers from the BJP, namely Francis D’Souza and Pandurang Madkaikar, three from regional party Goa Forward — namely Vijai Sardesai, Vinod Palienkar and Jayesh Salgaonkar, and two from another, older regional party Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party — Sudin Dhavalikar and Manohar Azgaonkar.
attributed the rout to the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) which she said were manipulated. “The historic mandate given to the BJP will give a new direction to Indian politics. It will end the pol-
itics of caste, dynasty (parivarvaad) and appeasement,” BJP President Amit Shah said. The BJP, he added, would form governments in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur.
The Congress suffered an equally humiliating defeat in neighboring Uttarakhand too. The BJP ousted it from power, winning 57 of the 70 seats, some of the victors being disgruntled Congress veterans who had joined the saffron outfit.

Prosecutor Preet Bharara asked to quit: Reports IANS, NEW YORK
P
reet Bharara, a high-profile Indian-American federal prosecutor who had an Indian diplomat arrested, has been asked to quit by US President Donald Trump’s administration in a sweeping ouster of hold-overs from the previous administration. Bharara and 45 other federal prosecutors, who were appointed
by former President Barack Obama, were told this week by Attorney General Jeff Sessions to submit their resignations. Nicknamed the “Sheriff of Wall Street”, his jurisdiction covered New York’s financial district putting him in the limelight as he prosecuted more than 100 finance executives for criminal activities like stock trading irregularities using insider information.

The minister’s response came a week after the Lok Sabha members raised concern over hate crimes against Indians in the U.S. The members were voicing concern over the killing of Indian engineer Srinivas Kuchibhotla in Kansas on February 22 in an apparent hate crime, and of another Indian Harnish Patel a week later. It was not clear if his resignation would be accepted immediately or if he would be asked to stay on to complete some pending prosecutions.

Coldest Holi in five years The dip in mercury led most people to choose powder colors in place of colored water. Water balloons, usually the norm on Holi, were mostly missing Celebration with verve in Bengal
KOLKATA: Holi was celebrated with great enthusiasm across West Bengal as people participated in great numbers in the festival of colors and swayed to a lot of popular beats. While the Bengali community dominated the Dol (spring festival similar to Holi) celebrations a day before, it was the turn of the nonBengali communities (predominantly Marwaris, Gujratis and Biharis) to splash colors on one another on Dulhendi. City hot spots, including amusement parks and community centres saw huge footfalls as revellers feasted and spent time with their friends and relatives dancing on peppy Bollywood numbers played in the background. State Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee took to twitter to wish the people on the occasion.

Adults refrained from throwing colored water on each other and parents asked children not to play too much with water balloons and water guns. The dip in mercury led most people to choose powder colors in place of colored water. Water balloons, usually the norm on Holi, were mostly missing and the celebration concluded by 4 p.m. in most places in the national capital. The minimum temperature on Holi in 2016 was 16 degrees Celsius, it stood at 11 degrees Celsius in 2015, 16 in 2014, 17 in 2013 and 13 degrees Celsius in 2012. Kejriwal alleges EVM tampering in Punjab 20-25% of votes polled in favor of AAP had been transferred to the Akali Dal-BJP alliance, the Delhi CM alleges IANS, NEW DELHI
D
elhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday alleged that EVMs may have been tampered with in Punjab, resulting in 20-25 per cent of AAP votes getting transferred to the SAD-BJP alliance and thus propping up the Congress to power. The Aam Aadmi Party leader told the media here that there were numerous booths where his party got only “two, three or four” votes when though the number of its own activists and family members were in dozens. He said there was widespread suspicion that “20 to 25 per cent of votes polled in favor of the AAP had been transferred to the Akali Dal-BJP alliance” by tampering the Electronic Voting Machines.
BRIEFS No respite for Zakir Naik’s NGO IRF NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Thursday dismissed a plea filed by NRI televangelist Zakir Naik against a ban on his NGO Islamic Research Foundation (IRF), saying the home ministry has “sufficient material for immediate ban”. Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva dismissing Naik’s plea, said: “Immediate action appears to have been taken in interest of sovereignty, integrity and maintenance of public order.” Naik had challenged the November 17, 2016 notification imposing an immediate ban on the IRF for five years under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
Two IS suspects arrested in Manipur IMPHAL: Assam Rifles have arrested two Islamic State suspects from a border town in Manipur, police sources said on Thursday. The arrests were made at a border checkpost at Khudengthabi along the Trans Asian Highway No 1 on March 14 when the suspects were proceeding towards Imphal from the border town of Moreh. The two were identified as Nazir Mohammad and Abu Bakir who told police that they were from Tamil Nadu. —IANS

Use ballot paper for civic polls: Delhi govt
NEW DELHI: The Election Commission on Thursday reiterated that electronic voting machines (EVMs) were tamper proof and termed the allegations by some political parties as “baseless, speculative and wild”. “It is not for the first time that such allegations and suspicions have been raised. But none of those alleging tampering has been able to demonstrate to the commission... that EVMs used by it can be manipulated,” the EC said in a statement.
NEW DELHI: The Delhi government has urged Lt Governor Anil Baijal to get the civic polls conducted through paper ballot instead of the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said on Wednesday. Talking to reporters here, Kejriwal said the request for conducting the polls through paper ballot had been sent to Baijal’s office as he had the power to amend the rules.
The Congress won the Punjab election with 38.4 per cent vote share, the defeated Akali Dal-BJP alliance got 30.5 per cent of votes while the AAP, now the main
opposition party, got only 23.5 per cent of votes. “There was anger against the ruling Akali-BJP alliance and people were saying the AAP will sweep

the polls with Akali-BJP getting only 5-6 per cent votes,” Kejriwal said. “But in the end, AAP got barely 25 per cent votes and the SAD got almost 31 per cent. How is it possible?” AAP “volunteers and their families... are all ready to swear on affidavit that they voted for us” in areas where the party got only two to four votes, he said. Kejriwal said there were no two views about the AAP sweep in the
Malwa region in Punjab and yet all seats there went to the Congress. Pointing out the vulnerability of EVMs, Kejriwal said the Election Commission cannot shirk away from its responsibility of restoring people’s faith in the electoral process. He said similar doubts had also been raised about the EVMs following the Maharashtra civic polls and the just concluded assembly election in Uttar Pradesh.

he father of a Dalit JNU student, who was found dead two days ago at a friend’s house in south Delhi, has ruled out suicide, alleging that his son was battling “caste-based harassment discrimination in his academic pursuits” at the university. Chinmoy Biswal said. J. Mathukrishnan, 29, an MPhil student at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), was found hanging
from a ceiling fan at his friend’s place in Munirka Vihar on Monday. His 53-year-old father, Jeevand-
haam, has told police that his son could not have committed suicide because his body carried no such indications. “I was shown the photographs of the body hanging from the ceiling fan with a cloth, his knees bent and his feet touching the ground. The position of the body as seen from the picture raises serious doubts about the alleged claim of my son committing suicide,” Jeevandhaam said in his written statement to police. A copy of the statement is with IANS. All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), however, ruled out any foul play in the death after a five-member medical board conducted an autopsy.

India, SL, B’desh tri-series in 2018 COLOMBO: Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) proposed a triangular contest between India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh for the Nidahas Trophy between March 15 and 30 next year to mark the island nation’s 70th anniversary of independence, according to an espncricinfo report. According to SLC President Thilanga Sumathipala, the tournament will consist of seven matches in all with each team playing the others twice, before the top two progress to the final. However, it is not yet clear if the matches will be T20 or ODI. “The (SLC) technical committee and cricket committee is looking into it, but at the moment we would like it to be a T20 triangular — that’s what the agreement is,” Sumathipala said. According to the Future Tours Programme (FTP), Sri Lanka are set to play five ODIs, and a T20I in India in March next year, which will follow three Tests. Sumathipala said at least some of those matches would effectively be transmuted into Nidahas Trophy games, while BCCI CEO Rahul Johri said the boards were still “working on” the exact schedule. —IANS

all the directors, the management and staff of ICC for supporting me wholeheartedly. I wish the ICC all the very best and hope it achieves greater heights in future.” The ICC confirmed that it has received Manohar’s resignation, adding that a replacement will be announced shortly.
“The ICC has confirmed it has received an email from Chairman Shashank Manohar tendering his resignation. The ICC Board will assess the situation and next steps before making a further announcement,” the ICC said in a statement this week. The BCCI, on its part, expressed
surprise at Manohar’s sudden decision. “Manohar’s contribution to Indian cricket is invaluable. He is a man of few words but excellent deeds,” the BCCI said in a statement. “The BCCI Committee of Administrators (CoA) was looking forward to a long-term coopera-
tion between the ICC and the BCCI with Manohar at the helm of affairs,” the BCCI added. “The BCCI wishes him the very best for his future endeavours.” The first ICC chief not affiliated to any of its member boards, Manohar took over the post from N. Srinivasan in May last year after giving up his position of BCCI president. Since then, he has tried to curb the disproportionate amount of power wielded by the BCCI, Cricket Australia (CA) and the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). The ICC had passed in principle a new constitution last month that corrected some of the imbalance in influence and financial power of the BCCI, CA and ECB. A final call on the new constitution was to be taken at the next round of meetings by the ICC boards next month. Manohar has served as BCCI president twice. He first became BCCI chief in 2008 and left the post in 2011. Following the death of Jagmohan Dalmiya, he was reelected as BCCI president in october 2015.

Third Test: Australia lose early wickets
A
head of the third cricket Test match, Australia captain Steve Smith on Wednesday rubbished his opposite number Virat Kohli’s allegations that he cheated more than once while taking Decision Review System (DRS) calls. He reiterated that it was his ‘brain fade’ that led to the controversial incident and he would never do it on a consistent basis. The second Test in Bengaluru ended on a sour note after Smith was caught looking towards the dressing room balcony for advice on DRS appeal against his dismissal when given out lbw to pacer Umesh Yadav. “From my point of view I think they’re completely wrong. I obviously came out after the game and said I made a mistake and it was an error on my behalf, it was a brain fade,” Smith said at the pre-match press conference on the eve of the third rubber here. “In regard to saying we do it consistently, that’s complete rubbish in my opinion. I think he was wrong in his statement,” added the 27-year old. Asked to comment on Kohli’s statement that he had no regrets

about what he had said after the Bengaluru game, Smith said there is no animosity anymore from his side. “Not from my point of view... Yeah, it’s about moving on and concentrating on this Test here. It’s been a great series so far, the cricket that’s been played, and hopefully cricket can be the winner out here in the Test match. It’s an exciting one, one-all in the series, half way through the series. We’re all excited about this Test and hopefully it can be a good one,” the right-hander said. The International Cricket Council (ICC) did not level any
charge against any player after the Test and match referee Richie Richardson will bring both the captains together ahead of the penultimate game. “Perhaps I might be able to ask a few questions. We’ll see what the mood is like at that time.” “Kohli obviously stuck by his comments. I think it will be just similar sort of thing with Richie making sure that cricket is the winner this week,” Smith said. “I spoke to Richie Richardson and the other umpires just now. Basically they said cricket is the winner in the Test. Both teams

safely away; unfortunately, around 70-80 per cent of costumes and jewellery for the movie have been destroyed,” a spokesperson, Bhansali Productions, said. The incident occurred at the picturesque Masaipathar area, around 15 km on the outskirts of Panhala town in Kolhapur district, said an investigating officer. “The set is spread across nearly 50,000 square feet and a group of unidentified persons set it on fire around 1 a.m,” the official told
IANS. Maharashtra Minister of State for Home Deepak V. Kesarkar said Bhansali had declined night security for the film set. He said the police had deployed one officer and five constables for day security. Now, this has been upgraded to one officer and 12 constables who will guard the unit round-the-clock. The miscreants escaped. “Padmavati” tells the story of Alauddin Khilji, the medieval-era Delhi ruler who fell in love with
Rajput queen Padmavati. Bhansali had moved the film’s shoot to Maharashtra after activists of outfit Shri Rajput Karni Sena had assaulted him and vandalised the Jaipur set in January over alleged distortions in the film’s script. But the group denied involvement in the Kolhapur incident. “It is likely that groups that support us might have indulged in this activity,” Lokendra Singh Kalvi, a leader of Shri Rajput Karni Sena, told IANS on phone.
Bhansali was to shoot a war scene on the set for the film, which features Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone and Shahid Kapoor in lead roles. Actress Anushka Sharma condemned the incident. “It’s not acceptable, of course. And no sensible person, not just in the film industry, can damage somebody’s personal properties.” Filmmaker Sudhir Mishra told IANS: “No one has read the script, except the director (Sanjay Leela Bhansali) who has already given an explanation regarding intimate scenes and other issues that were questioned. “The film is yet to be made. How can some people make a judgment even before watching the film regarding inaccuracy of history? “As a film industry, we all should stand by him, and against such vandalism. Every individual has a right to interpret things in their way and to take creative liberty.” Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma expressed shock. “‘Padmavati’ attacked again? I think we as Indians are going back to the medieval ages and we need to be ashamed. I am sure attackers of ‘Padmavati’ when compared to Sanjay Bhansali won’t even know 1 per cent of its history which they are pretending to protect.”

Under Vision 2029, the state is targeting a growth rate of 12 per cent every year. He admitted that shifting the state capital and demonetization has put tremendous stress on the
financial resources during the year 2016-17. “Further, migration to GST regime is expected to negatively impact the growth of state resources in the short term,” he said. Claiming that the people took hardships caused by demonetization in their stride, he said Andhra Pradesh was leading the country in adopting digital payment methods.
The state allocated Rs 9,091 crore constituting 5.79 per cent of total budgetary allocation to agriculture and allied sectors, Rs 19,565 crore to rural development which is 12.46 per cent of total budgetary allocation, and Rs 12,770 crore to irrigation sector comprising 8.13 of total budgetary allocation. oung singer Nahid Afrin, against whom some Islamic clerics in the state have issued a ‘fatwa’, says she is not afraid and would not stop singing or performing till her death. Over 40 clerics from Muslim organizations issued the ‘fatwa’ against the 16-year-old, restricting her to perform on stage, saying that the performance by a girl on stage was against the “Sharia laws”. The clerics organization had also distributed some leaflets in and around Udali area near Hojai in central Assam, asking the singer not to perform in a function scheduled for March 25.

‘Badrinath Ki Dulhania’: Frothy and cliched
A
quick-fix, from the stables of Dharma Productions, director Shashank Khaitan’s Badrinath Ki Dulhania is a typically cliched, frothy rom-com, which exploits the sheer charm of its stars. A lot happens and it happens charmingly with such quick spirit and wit, that it’s enough to put you off rom-coms for a while. The film is not bad, but with no novelty factor. This is just a case of the law of diminishing marginal utility. The story involves Badrinath Bansal (Varun Dhawan), a typical

Indrani Das (Center)
BY A STAFF WRITER ERSEY CITY, NJ -- A 17-year-old Indian American student Indrani Das from New Jersey was among the 40 young competitors in one of the country’s oldest science and math competitions honored at the annual Regeneron Science Talent Search Awards Gala for their research projects demonstrating exceptional scientific and mathematical ability. Nearly one-third of the 40 finalists were Indian Americans. The winners announced at the gala took home more than $1.8 million in awards provided by main competition sponsor, Regeneron. Das won the top award of $250,000 for her study of a possible approach to treating the death of neurons due to brain injury or neurodegenerative disease. A contributor to neuron death is astrogliosis, a condition that occurs when cells called astrocytes react to injury by growing, dividing and reducing their uptake of glutamate, which in excess is toxic to neurons, according to a Regeneron and SSP joint statement. In a laboratory model, Das showed that exosomes isolated from astrocytes transfected with microRNA-124a both improved astrocyte uptake of glutamate and increased neuron survival. Indian American Arjun Ramani, 18 of West Lafayette, Ind., took third place in the competition, winning $150,000. Ramani was chosen for blending the mathematical field of graph theory with computer programming to answer questions about networks, the statement said.

Security is tightened at ICC after robbery cases BY A STAFF WRITER ILPITAS, CA -- The India Community Center (ICC) in Milpitas, Calif., announced on March 13 that in the wake of recent robberies, it has taken increased security precautions. The center, a nonprofit dedicated to serving the Indian American and Greater Bay Area community, said that an ICC member was assaulted in the parking lot of ICC’s Table Tennis Center about two weeks ago. In the incident, the member was robbed of his cellphone and backpack, which included a laptop. The member was not hurt in the robbery and the police caught one of the two culprits. The center said another incident was reported over the weekend of March 11 and March 12. A car in the Table Tennis Center’s parking lot was broken into and items were stolen. Among the updated precautions the center is taking are putting up solar motion sensor lights in areas that are dark and putting up monitoring signs. Additionally, the center is in the process of putting up video cameras and exploring putting an alarm system with motion sensors

Indian hotel manager steals $1m from boss BY A STAFF WRITER RENTON, NJ -- A hotel manager stands accused of stealing more than $1 million from his boss, including draining a $600,000 insurance annuity belonging to the victim. State authorities say Vikas Mehta was recently indicted on charges of identity theft, money laundering, theft by unlawful taking and forgery. The 43-year-old Cliffside Park man faces several decades in prison if he is convicted on all counts. Mehta allegedly stole four checks from his employer and allegedly used some of the stolen proceeds to buy property in
BY A STAFF WRITER EMPHIS, TN -- The Panola County, Mississippi, Coroner’s office on March 13 identified the remains found in a rural area as those of Indian American businessman Sanjay “Sam” Patel. Patel had been missing since the evening of October 3, 2016, when he and a frequent customer, Marcus Perry, left the liquor store he owns in Memphis, Tennessee. According to a report from the Bartlett, Tennessee, Police Department, which has been investigating the case for six months, a farmer called the police to say he had located a large Christmas tree bag on his land. The property owner said he noticed the bag flapping since January but never went to look. Contents of the bag as well as other evidence located in the immediate area were taken to the Panola County Medical Examiner’s office on February 28 for identification, and compared with Patel’s DNA. The police returned to the area on March 3 with a cadaver dog, and found additional evidence. Panola County Medical Examiner Gracie Gulledge released her findings to Bartlett police, conclusively stating that Patel’s body had been found. On the evening of October 3, Patel and Perry left “Five Star Wine and Spirits” in the care of Patel’s wife Shilpa, and took off in Perry’s vehicle. Patel did not return home that evening. Perry’s car was spotted the following day, but he was not found until October 11, when his brother entered his home in Bartlett to find Perry dead face down in his bed with a Glock pistol in his hand, aimed at his head. The police believe Perry committed suicide. “There is no indication of what transpired that evening,” said Bartlett Police Captain Tina Schaber, adding that there was no evidence of drugs or alcohol at the crime scene. Perry’s home was searched. His Samsung cell phone was also searched for text messages, images, voice messages and call history. Cell phone records and “pings” from Perry’s phone led investigators to the area of Panola County. Perry had family ties to that area and his cell phone pinged in that location numerous times after Patel was reported missing, according to police reports. Perry was a regular customer at Patel’s store. According to Shilpa Patel, his wife, Perry would frequently come in to buy a bottle of cognac. Meanwhile, Patel’s brother Alpesh, who lives in Gujarat, has urged External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj to ask the police to step up their investigation into Patel’s death. Alpesh has also requested a visa to travel to the US.

Victim brands PA motel as sex den
BY A STAFF WRITER HILADELPHIA, PA -- A lawsuit is accusing a Philadelphia motel of providing rooms to human traffickers who exploited girls and forced them into prostitution. The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that the complaint was filed on March 10 on behalf of a girl who was 14 years old when she was forced into the sex trade in 2013. The suit names the Roosevelt Inn in Northeast Philadelphia, Indian American manager Yagna Patel, and parent company UFVS Management in Purchase, New York. It contends the girl, who is now 17, was enslaved and forced to perform sex acts with men in 2013 and 2014 and the motel provided rooms to her traffickers. A woman who answered the phone at the UFVS Management said no one could comment. Patel, 72, said he had not seen the lawsuit and was not aware of any minors allegedly being victimized in the motel. “We just rent the room and that’s all we can do,” he said, adding that he has a close relationship with the police and if there’s unruliness in a room, the motel guests would

Authorities first learned of Mehta’s scheme after his boss notified Prudential in December 2015 that his $600,000 annuity had been cashed out. Authorities say Mehta used his boss’s personal information in January and February of 2013 to have the money in the account sent in the form of a check through Fed Ex, which he intercepted. Authorities with the Office of Insurance Fraud Protection discovered Mehta had other large sums of money cashed out from IRA accounts and other insurance accounts belonging to his boss.

Man ends life after killing daughters
Bid to burn down FL Indian-owned store

BY A STAFF WRITER T CHALRES, IL -- In one of the most horrible crime tragedies in Illinois, a father shot dead his 16-year-old twin daughters, then shot his estranged wife in her legs before committing suicide by turning the gun upon himself at their home in the luxury Milestone Row condominium complex of St. Charles, Illinois, on March 9. While firing at the mother of the twins, Anjum Coffland, a 46-year-old Pakistani American, he yelled at her, “I want you to live and suffer like I did.” She was listed in stable condition at Delnor Community Hospital. When the police arrived on the murdersuicide scene, they found the twins, Tiffany and Brittany Coffland, and their 48-year-old father, Randall Coffland dead. All three died from single gunshot wounds to the head. Randall also called 911 after he killed his daughters, and shot at his wife. Moments later, Anjum also called 911. She can be heard screaming, “My girls are dead,” and calling out her girls’ names. “This is a tragic and horrific event,” Deputy Chief David Kintz told reporters. The police called the incident a domestic

BY A STAFF WRITER ORT ST. LUCIE, FL -- A 64-yearold man attempted to burn down a convenience store owned by Indian Americans in Florida as he mistakenly thought it was owned by Muslims. Richard Lloyd, who wanted to “run the Arabs out of our country,” pushed a dumpster in front of the Port St. Lucie store and set the contents on fire on March 10. The store was not open at the time of the incident and firefighters quickly extinguished the fire without it causing any property damage. Lloyd told investigators he tried to buy a bottle of juice at the store a few days ago but was told they did not have any. He was also upset because he assumed the store employee was Muslim. He said he was angry with what followers of Islam “are doing in the Middle East” and thought the store owners were Muslims. Lloyd was charged with first-degree arson and remained at the St. Lucie County Jail in lieu of a $30,000 bond as of March 11. He told investigators he “was doing my part for America,” and planned to burn the entire building. Deputies said that Lloyd told them his plan was to get a big enough fire in the dumpster to catch the building on fire, and once it was burning he thought the alcohol from the beer and wine inside would burn it to the ground. Hate crimes against Muslims increased by over 65 percent in 2015, according to FBI statistics. Some religious leaders attribute the crime spike to the rise of President Donald Trump, who critics say fuelled Islamophobia and racism as a candidate.

situation. Randall, Tiffany and Brittany Coffland had been living together in the First Street apartment, while Anjum Coffland had been living in another St. Charles apartment, according to authorities. The police had been called to Anjum’s apartment in the 100 block of South Fifth Avenue in February for a domestic incident involving her estranged husband, but no physical battery was reported in that incident. There was no indication of violence in the past. One girl was found on the couch and the other in their bedroom. Single casings were found next to each of their bodies. Randall was a veteran IT manager who worked as an analyst and network management specialist for various companies throughout the Carol Stream and Chicago,

The study, published in the journal Psychology of Addictive Behaviors, also showed that addiction related to videogames and computer activities shows sex differences. oung adults are getting hooked to video gaming to escape from medical conditions like attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), obsessive-compulsive disorder and depression, new research has revealed. Excessively engaging in gaming may function as an escape mechanism for, or coping with, underlying psychiatric disorders in attempt to alleviate unpleasant feelings and to calm restless bodies, researchers report. “Video game addiction is more prevalent among younger men, and among those not being in a current relationship, than others,” said Cecilie Schou Andreassen, clinical psychologist specialist at University of Bergen (UiB) in
E-cigarettes may do more benefit than harm: Experts NEW YORK: A team of international tobacco control experts has found that use of e-cigarettes can reduce overall smoking as well as potentially decrease the mortality rates particularly arising out of cigarette smoking. The findings, published online in the journal Addiction, showed that e-cigarettes have the potential to counteract health risks and may do more benefit than harm. Also, the evidence suggests a strong potential for e-cigarettes use to improve population health by reducing or displacing cigarette use in countries where cigarette prevalence is still high and smokers are interested in quitting. “While e-cigarettes may act as a gateway to smoking, much of the evidence indicates that e-cigarette use encourages cessation from cigarettes by those people who would
NEW YORK: Children exposed to chemicals used in liquid laundry detergent packets may have serious health effects such as breathing problems, heart problems, and even death, warns a study. The study, published online in the journal Pediatrics, found that from January 2013 to December 2014 poison control centre in the US received 62,254 calls related to laundry and dishwasher detergent exposures among children younger than six years old. Incidents related to laundry detergent packets saw the biggest rise -- increasing 17 percent over the two-year study period. At least one child a day was admitted to the hospital due to a laundry detergent packet exposure. In addition, the study also saw two child deaths which were associated with exposure to liquid laundry detergent packets. “Many families don’t realize how toxic these highly concentrated laundry detergent packets are,” noted study co-author Marcel Casavant. Experts recommend that families with children younger than sixyears old should use traditional detergent, which is much less toxic than laundry detergent packets, as well as store all laundry detergents up, away, and out of sight of the kids.

T have otherwise smoked with or without e-cigarettes,” said lead study researcher David Levy, professor at Georgetown University in the US. However, the experts’ estimated that exclusive e-cigarette use is associated with about five percent of the mortality risks of smoking. The research shows that cigarette smoking rates have fallen more in the last two years than they have in the previous four or five years in the US, Canada and England, and that this trend has coincided with the increase in e-cigarette use.
he more kids are spanked, the more likely they are to defy their parents and exhibit anti-social behavior, a new study has found from five decades of research involving over 160,000 children. According to researchers, spanking -- defined as an open-handed hit on the behind or extremities -increases aggression, mental health problems and cognitive difficulties, all in the direction of detrimental outcomes. “We found that spanking was associated with unintended detrimental outcomes and was not associated with more immediate or long-term compliance, which are parents’ intended outcomes when they discipline their children,” said Elizabeth Gershoff from The University of Texas at Austin in the US. The team tested for some long-
term effects among adults who were spanked as children. The results revealed that the more they were spanked, the more likely they were to exhibit antisocial behavior and to experience mental health problems. They were also more likely to support physical punishment for their own children, which highlights one of the key ways that attitudes toward
physical punishment are passed from generation to generation. “The upshot of the study is that spanking increases the likelihood of a wide variety of undesired outcomes for children. Spanking thus does the opposite of what parents usually want it to do,” said coauthor Grogan-Kaylor University of Michigan’s school of social work in the US.

DRINKING IN PREGNANCY HARMS KIDS Alcohol during pregnancy may their put children at the risk of impairment in kidney blood flow in adulthood and heightened neurological problems IANS, NEW YORK
M
others who consume alcohol during pregnancy put their children at the risk of impairment in kidney blood flow in adulthood and heightened neurological problems caused by a stroke, warns a study. In the study conducted on mice,
the blood flow analysis showed evidence for increased arterial resistance within the kidneys -- a sign of possible early onset renal hypertension in the male offspring that were exposed to alcohol before birth. “The finding indicates that in mice exposed to alcohol before birth, sex appears to play some role in whether the volume of damaged
tissue in the brain correlates with functional and neurological impairment,” said lead researcher Shameena Bake, assistant professor at Texas A & M Health Science Centre in the US. Assessing neurological damage caused by stroke, the researchers found greater levels of impairment in the six female and six male mice that had fetal alcohol exposure,
compared with the dozen that were not exposed to alcohol. Moreover, the measurements of the stroke-damaged area of the brain were linked to scores on neurological testing in the females, but not the males, with fetal alcohol exposure, the researchers maintained. Researchers administered ethanol to six pregnant mice twice daily for four days, from gestation-
al day 12 through 15, and administered water to six other pregnant mice. Using ultrasound testing, the team measured blood flow in both male and female offspring of the mice at three months of age. The study was presented at the American Stroke Association’s International Stroke Conference 2016.

N
ext time when you try to imitate the way your spouse eats, pause for a moment as a couple’s lifestyle choices can increase their chances of becoming obese regardless of their genetic profile, finds a study. According to researchers, choices made by couples in middle age -including those linked to diet and exercise -- have a much greater impact on them than the lifestyle each shared during their childhood. “The environment you share with your partner in adulthood also influences whether you become obese and this is more important than your upbringing,” said lead researcher Chris Haley from the University of Edinburgh
IANS, LONDON
E in Britain. The findings, published in the journal PLOS Genetics, reinforce the message that lifestyle changes in adulthood can have a significant impact in tackling obesity. The research helped scientists to better understand links between
obesity, genetics and lifestyle habits. The team analysed data provided by 20,000 people. “The findings also show that even people who come from families with a history of obesity can reduce their risk by changing their lifestyle habits,” Haley added.
Almonds boost your overall health IANS, NEW YORK
E
ating moderate amount of almonds daily right from the childhood days can drastically improve health later in life, a study has found. “If a parent is able to incorporate almonds or different healthy snacks into a child’s diet, it’s more likely that the child will choose those snacks later on in life,” said lead researcher Alyssa Burns from University of Florida. To reach the conclusion,
researchers studied the effect that the addition of almonds can have on a person’s diet quality. For a 14-week study, data was collected from 28 pairs of parents and
children. The parents were instructed to eat 42.52 grams of almonds each day and the children were encouraged to eat 14.17 grams of almonds or an equivalent amount of almond butter each day. The findings showed that after the almond intervention, the average “Healthy Eating Index” score for parents and children increased. The results suggest that whole food approaches, like adding almonds to diet, may be an achievable way to improve overall health.
nsure proper sleep if you want to boost your memory as brain activity during sleep sorts through several experiences we encounter every day and retains only important information in memory pockets, say researchers. The findings showed that patterns of brain activity that occur during the day are replayed at fastforward speed during sleep. The key result is that sleep replay strengthens the microscopic connections between nerve cells that are active -- a process deemed critical for consolidating memories. “These findings are about the fundamental processes that occur
in the brain during the consolidation of memory during sleep,” said lead researcher Jack Mellor from University of Bristol in a paper published in the journal Cell Reports. The new discoveries provide further evidence for the benefits of a good night’s sleep. Good sleep is important because the bad night sleep often experienced by both the healthy population and people with schizophrenia or Alzheimer’s disease. “It also seems that the successful replay of brain activity during sleep is dependent on the emotional state of the person when they are learning. This has major implications for how we teach and enable people to learn effectively,” Mellor said.

he alarming increase in childhood obesity rates in the US that began nearly 30 years ago continues unabated, with the biggest increases in severe obesity, says a study. “Despite some other recent reports, we found no indication of a decline in obesity prevalence in the US in any group of children aged two through 19,” said study lead author Asheley Skinner from Duke University School of Medicine. “This is particularly true with severe obesity, which remains high, especially among adolescents,” Skinner noted. The researchers analysed data from the US National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey, a large, ongoing compilation of health
information that has spanned decades. The researchers found that for 2013-2014, 33.4 percent of children between the ages of two to 19 were overweight. Among those, 17.4 percent had obesity.
Early maternal support boosts child’s brain growth IANS, WASHINGTON
C
hildren who receive adequate care and nurturing from their mothers during the preschool years are likely to have more robust growth in brain structures associated with learning, memory and stress response than children with less supportive mothers, suggests a new study. The findings suggest it may be possible to help children do better in school, cope better in life and devel-
op emotionally by helping parents learn to provide more support and nurturing early in the lives of their children. “This study suggests there’s a sensitive period when the brain responds more to maternal support,” said study first author Joan Luby, professor at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. The findings were published online in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences
These rates were not statistically different than those from the previous reporting period of 2011-2012. Across all categories of obesity, a clear, statistically significant increase continued from 1999 through 2014, the study found.

Isolation may impair hearing NEW YORK: Continuing to have social interaction is key to keeping your ears sensitive even in old age, suggests new research. Hearing socially meaningful sounds can change the ear and enable it to better detect those sounds, the findings showed. “The ear is modifiable,” said one of the researchers Walter Wilczynski, professor at Georgia State University in the US. “It’s plastic. It can change by getting better or worse at picking up signals, depending on particular types of experiences, such as listening to social signals,” Wilczynski explained. The researchers studied the phenomenon in green treefrogs. In the lab, the experimental group heard their species’ specific calls every night for 10 consecutive nights and while the control group heard random tones
Early Edition. In the study, the researchers were able to observe steady growth in the hippocampus of children with supportive mothers across multiple brain scans taken at different time periods, with 127 children receiving three MRI scans each from the time they first started school through early adolescence. The researchers measured nurturing in mothers by closely observing and scoring videotaped interactions between mothers and their children. The investigators observed mothers and children under moderately stressful conditions. “The mother is asked to complete a task while we give the child an attractive gift to open, but we don’t allow it to be opened right away,”
with no social meaning. Then the researchers placed electrodes on the skin near the frogs’ ears and measured the response of their ears to sound. “My guess is people who have a lot of experience with our social vocal signal, which is our speech, this probably helps keep their sensory system in a healthy state that helps them pick out those signals,” Wilczynski said.
Luby said. Parents who are able to maintain their composure and complete assigned tasks while still offering emotional support to their children are rated as more nurturing and supportive. Parents who dismiss their children, or behave in punitive ways during the test, receive lower marks for support. Small changes in support indicated big differences in outcomes, Luby said. In examining the brain scans, they found that children whose mothers were more supportive than average had increases in growth of the hippocampus that were more than two times greater than in those whose mothers were slightly below average on the nurturing scale.
