anned opener David Warner has this week joined Steve Smith and Cameron Bancroft in accepting Cricket Australia’s sanctions for his role in the Cape Town ball-tampering scandal. David Warner, like his teammates both did this week, took to social media to confirm he’s accepted his lengthy suspension from international and domestic cricket.

“I have today let Cricket Australia know that I fully accept the sanctions imposed on me,” Warner tweeted on April 5. “I am truly sorry for my actions and will now do everything I can to be a better person, teammate and role model,” the tweet added. Both Smith and Bancroft announced they’d accepted their fate, opting not to challenge the respective 12 and nine-month suspensions handed down by CA last week. Besides the 12-month ban,

Warner has also been banned from holding any leadership role within the national team for the remainder of his playing career. Warner had tearfully apologized for his role in the fiasco on Saturday, admitting he was resigned to the fact he may never play for Australia again. The opener is however free to play Premier Cricket as well in overseas domestic competitions, subject to Cricket Australia granting him a No Objection Certificate.

Russia faces fresh US sanctions The additional sanctions are economic and designed to target oligarchs with ties to President Vladimir Putin, say US officials

Trump’s national security advisers have pushed for more sanctions after the poisoning of Sergei Skripal

P

resident Donald Trump’s administration was expected to impose additional sanctions against Russia by Friday, according to US officials. The sanctions are economic and designed to target oligarchs with ties to President Vladimir Putin, the officials told The Washington Post this week. However, the final number of Russians facing punitive action remains fluid. In recent weeks, Trump’s national security advisers have pushed for more sanctions after the poisoning of Sergei Skripal, a former Russian spy in England, interference in the Unoted States 2016 elections and a cyber-attack described as the most destructive and costly in history. On April 3 night, outgoing national security adviser H.R. McMaster called on the US to take

BRIEFS Female suspect dead in YouTube shooting SAN BRUNO (CALIFORNIA): A woman with a handgun opened fire at YouTube’s headquarters in the US state of California, shooting three people before killing herself, authorities said. The incident took place on Tuesday and the San Bruno Police Department identified the female attacker as 39-year-old Nasim Najafi Aghdam, a Californian resident of Iranian descent, the US media reported. The motivation for the shootings was under investigation, police said, although her social media postings included criticisms of YouTube.

Mexico slams bid to militarise border MEXICO CITY: The Mexican Senate has “categorically” rejected the US initiative to militarize the USMexico border to thwart undocumented migrants. The response came hours after US President Donald Trump on Wednesday signed a decree to immediately deploy the National Guard to patrol the 3,200-km border the two countries share, Xinhua news agency reported. Deploying army troops or the National Guard in the region would be “yet another wrong” against the Mexican community, Mexican lawmakers said in a letter addressed to their Interior Ministry. —IANS

a tougher line against Moscow, saying: “We have failed to impose sufficient costs.” McMaster’s remark came hours

after Trump said in a White House news conference that “nobody has been tougher on Russia than I have”.

Russian officials, meanwhile, have expressed exasperation with the United States. Moscow’s ambassador to the United States,

Anatoly Antonov, said the “atmosphere in Washington is poison”. “It’s a toxic atmosphere,” he told NBC News. Last week, the US expelled 60 Russian spies and diplomats in response to the poisoning of Skripal and his daughter Yulia, the largest expulsion of Russians in American history, The Washington Post reported. In early March, the Trump administration also slapped fresh sanctions on Russian government hackers and spy agencies for interfering in the 2016 election and the cyber-attack.

U

the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, an Obama administration program that shields Dreamers from deportation, Xinhua reported. Trump shut it down last fall but gave lawmakers six month to come up with a permanent solution. The Treasury Department said that “all property and interests in property of these persons subject to US jurisdiction are blocked” and US citizens were banned from having any transactions with them. “LeT continues to operate freely within Pakistan, holding public rallies, raising funds and plotting and training for terrorist attacks,” the State Department said. “Make no mistake: whatever LeT chooses to call itself, it remains a violent terrorist group,” the Department’s Counterterrorism Coordinator Nathan A. Fake news order junked Prime Minister Narendra Modi intervenes, withdraws Information and Broadcasting ministry’s order threatening scribes over fake news IANS, NEW DELHI

F

acing intense attack, the BJP-led government made a hasty retreat as Prime Minister Narendra Modi this week withdrew within hours his government’s order that threatened to take away the accreditation of journalists involved in producing “fake news”. “(The) Prime Minister has directed that the press release regarding fake news be withdrawn and the matter should only be addressed in the Press Council of India,” an official source said. The order warned that journalists would be denied access to the government even on mere accusations of spreading fake news and could lose their accreditation for a limited period or permanently. Journalists and opposition parties denounced the order issued by the Information and Broadcasting Ministry and described the guidelines as an attack on press freedom. Congress President Rahul Gandhi took potshots at Modi, saying there was a loss of control and panic was setting in. “Sensing mounting anger on the ‘fake news’ notification, the PM orders a U-Turn on his own order.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi. (Photo: IANS)

One can clearly see a loss of control and panic setting in now,” Gandhi tweeted. Congress leader Anand Sharma told reporters that it was difficult to believe that Modi was not in the know of the order when it was

issued as there was complete centralization of authority and decision-making in the government. “The BJP, the RSS and the Prime Minister are beneficiary of fake news,” he said. Some organizations representing

journalists - Press Club of India, Indian Women’s Press Corps, Press Association and Federation of Press Clubs of India - issued a statement expressing “deep concern” over Monday’s order. “There is ample scope for introspection and reform of journalistic practices; yet a government fiat restraining the fourth pillar of our democracy is not the solution,” the statement said. Following Modi’s directive, the Information and Broadcasting ministry withdrew its press release. Shortly after Modi’s directive, Information and Broadcasting Minister Smriti Irani said in tweets that her ministry was happy to engage with journalist organizations to fight the menace of fake news. “PIB Accreditation Guidelines asking Press Council of India & News Broadcasters Association to define & act against ‘fake’ news’ have generated debate. Several journalists & organizations have reached out giving positive suggestions regarding the same,” she said. The release talked of suspension of accreditation for six months in case of first violation, one year in case of second and permanently in case of third violation.

CBI grills Chanda Kochhar’s kin MUMBAI: The CBI on April 5 said it is questioning ICICI CEO and MD Chanda Kochhar's brother-in-law Rajeev Kochhar in case of Rs 3,250 crore loan to the Videocon Group in 2012. “We have called Rajeev Kochhar for questioning to seek certain clarifications in the case,” a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) official told IANS. The agency had registered a preliminary enquiry against her husband Deepak Kochhar, Videocon Group officials and others for its probe to determine any wrongdoing or otherwise in the sanction of the loan to the Videocon Group by the ICICI Bank as part of a consortium of banks in 2012. Chanda Kochhar, facing questions of conflict of interest on the issue, has not been named in the PE, which was registered after news reports raised questions about Videocon Chairman Venugopal Dhoot giving loan of Rs 64 crore to a firm he had jointly promoted with Deepak Kochhar, six months after his group got the Rs 3,250 crore loan. The said money was part of a loan of Rs 40,000 crore which Videocon received from a consortium of 20 banks led by the State Bank of India. Meanwhile, sources in the CBI said Deepak Kochhar will be called for questioning soon. — IANS

Nine dead, several hurt as Dalit protests turn violent across nation IANS, NEW DELHI

N

ine people were killed and dozens injured as Dalit protests during a day-long nation-wide shutdown this week turned violent in India amid anger against a Supreme Court order that dilutes a law aimed at preventing atrocities against Dalits and Tribes. The government, in a bid to pacify the agitated activists, said it had filed a petition in the apex court seeking a review of its March 20 order that bars automatic arrest and registration of cases for alleged harassment of Dalits and others. But the top court denied an urgent hearing of the matter. Protesters clashed with police in Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jharkhand, Bihar and Odisha — states where normal life was paralysed in varying degrees amid incidences of violence and arson. The central government rushed 800 anti-riot policemen to violence-hit Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.

Modi hits out at Congress NEW DELHI: Amid simmering Dalit anger across the country over a Supreme Court ruling, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took a dig at the Congress for playing politics in B.R. Ambedkar’s name and said no other government had honored the Dalit icon like his. Modi said his government gave Ambedkar, one of the main authors of India’s Constitution, his rightful place and completed projects in his memory that were ignored by the previous government. He said the 26, Alipur Road house where Ambedkar breathed his past would be dedicated to the nation as Ambedkar National

Memorial a day before his birth anniversary on April 14. Modi said it was the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government that decided to dedicate two memorials to Ambedkar at two places in the capital. Without naming the Congress-led UPA, he said it could not happen as the governments that followed Vajpayee showed little interest, ignored Ambedkar and his contributions and delayed the project for years. “After that, the governments ran like that... Everybody is always ready to do politics in the name of Babasahib. But nobody gave him the kind of respect and paid tributes to

him as much as this government did,” the Prime Minister said. He said his government was walking the path shown by Ambedkar and asked every political group to try and do the same for the country’s development.

A Home Ministry official in Delhi said two companies of Rapid Action Force (RAF) were sent to Meerut and one company each to Agra and Hapur in Uttar Pradesh. Clashes turned deadly in Madhya Pradesh where six persons were killed and dozens injured, forcing

officials to impose curfew in Morena, Gwalior and Bhind districts. Protests were also held Bhopal as agitators blocked roads in the state capital. Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan made a passionate appeal for peace.

Punjab and Haryana also saw widespread protests. Shops, educational institutions and other establishments remained closed and Class 10 and 12 examinations were deferred in Punjab, which has the highest concentration of Scheduled Castes, consti-

tuting nearly 32 per cent its 2.8 crore population. In Bihar, activists disrupted rail and road traffic. Mobs shut down markets and shops as well as educational institutions, police said. Amid widespread anger and violence, the Modi government filed a review petition in the Supreme Court to seek recall of its judgment that ruled that there would be no automatic arrest of an accused following a complaint moved under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989.

Mamata’s unity efforts: Keeping leadership issue on hold Having single-handedly ousted the Communists from West Bengal, the state Chief Minister has now taken on an even bigger challenge AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI

S

ince there is no dominant leader with a countrywide appeal in the opposition camp at the moment, it is natural that the most energetic opponents of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will take the lead in trying to bring together the different parties to fight the ruling party at the Centre. Not surprisingly, Mamata Banerjee is playing that part. Having single-handedly ousted the Communists from West Bengal against what appeared at the time as insuperable odds, she has now taken on an even bigger challenge to evict the BJP from Delhi. Prior to the 2004 general election, Sonia Gandhi assumed the role of a coordinator and succeeded in toppling the Atal Behari Vajpayee government, which was confident of a second term. It remains to be seen whether the West Bengal Chief Minister succeeds in her endeavor, which is not dissimilar to what happened in 2004. Her formula is simple. Each party should fight where it is strong against the BJP (Jo party jahan

strong hai, wahan usko ladna chahiye). This is the basis of her one-to-one confrontations with the saffron outfit. However, there will be a problem with this arrangement where two parties may claim to be equally “strong” in a state. There may be no objections, for instance, to Trinamool Congress

However, there will be a problem with this arrangement where two parties may claim to be equally “strong” in a state. being the main challenger to the BJP in West Bengal, where the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) and the Congress have lost their earlier influence. But the scene is different in Kerala, where both the CPI-M and the Congress may claim to be equally strong. Similarly, in Maharashtra, it will not be easy to choose between the Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) for allotting the leading role unless there is an alliance between them. It will be interesting to find out if this particular problem was touched upon by

nataka where the Congress can expect to be the main challenger to the BJP. In Bihar, it will be the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), in Tamil Nadu the DMK, in Uttar Pradesh a Samajwadi Party (SP)-Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) alliance, in Andhra Pradesh the Telugu Desam, in Telangana K. Chandrashekar Rao and in Odisha Naveen Patnaik, who currently appears to be at a loss about the side to which he belongs.

From victim to crusader for sex workers Fondly called “Amma”, this Telangana-based woman is impacting the lives of nearly 5,000 women who are into sex work, also providing vocational training to their children MAMTA AGGARWAL, HYDERABAD

O

rphaned at the age of three, Jayamma Bhandari spent her childhood in grim poverty. She was forced into sex trade by her husband. But, unlike other victims who are forced into the murky business, she decided to challenge her destiny — becoming, in the process, an inspiration for many other women. Now 40-years-old, Jayamma runs the Chaitanya Mahila Mandali (CMM) to help sex workers leave the exploitative profession and find respectable livelihoods. CMM works in high-risk slum communities to raise awareness on sexual rights and reproductive health, and takes up skilling and livelihood courses. According to the National Aids Control Organisation (NACO), there are 1.65 million registered sex workers in the country — the actu-

al numbers would be much higher — who lead very sordid lives. Though they are not in the profession by choice, they have to bear the stigma associated with it, feeling ostracised, alone, unwanted and disposable. There are ramifications of

the exposure to various sexuallytransmitted diseases too. Jayamma is credited with directly impacting the lives of some 5,000 women in sex work and nearly a thousand of them are now engaged in alternative livelihoods. Also, over

3,500 children of sex workers have been provided vocational training through her efforts. Fondly called “Amma”, or mother, her efforts were acknowledged by the government and she received the Nari Shakti (Women Power) Award on International Women’s Day last month. Earlier, the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) also conferred her with the Exemplar Award in 2017. Jayamma grew up in her uncle’s home in Nakrakal in Nalgonda district, about 300 km from Hyderabad. After a tough childhood and a difficult adolescence, she was married to a man in Hyderabad who, soon after she had a baby, started pressurizing her to join the flesh trade. Her refusal led to her being tortured, both physically and mentally. With minimal education and no one to support her, she succumbed to the wishes of her husband.

Selling not only her body, but her soul too, Jayamma toyed with the idea of suicide many times. However, the thought of what would happen to her daughter after her death — that she too could be pushed into the same trade — gave Jayamma the strength to go on. It was a meeting with Jai Singh Thomas, an NGO executive from Hyderabad, that proved to be a turning point for her. He encouraged her to leave sex work and do advocacy for the community. With Thomas’ help, she decided to set up an organization that would enable sex workers to find viable alternative professions. Thus began her journey as a change agent. Now Jayamma — who finally mustered the courage to part ways with her husband in 2012 — and her organization reach out to victims like her, counsel and try to convince them that there can be better ways to lead their lives.

US-China trade war escalates China hits back, slaps new tariffs worth $50 billion on 106 US products GAURAV SHARMA, BEIJING

White House downplays trade war with China

hina in no time hit back by slapping tariffs of worth $50 billion on 106 US products this week, hours after Washington decided to impose import taxes on 1,300 Chinese products. The Customs Tariff Commission of the State Council has decided to impose an additional tariff of 25 per cent on 106 items of products under 14 categories, Xinhua quoted the Chinese Finance Ministry as saying. The Ministry said the move was in response to Washington’s proposed list of products subject to additional tariffs, which covered Chinese exports worth $50 billion with a suggested tariff rate of 25 per cent. The date of implementation will depend on when the US government impose the tariffs on Chinese products, the Ministry said. The Chinese Commerce Ministry said the US move was “an evident violation of rules of the World Trade Organization (WTO)”. Washington’s action “severely infringed on the legitimate rights and interests that China enjoys in accordance with the WTO rules, and threatened China’s economic

WASHINGTON: Larry Kudlow, the newly appointed White House Economic Council Director, has downplayed a potential trade war with China, saying that the US imposition of tariffs on 1,300 Chinese products is just a proposal. “Blame China, not President Trump,” Kudlow said for the recent tariff impositions by the US administration, to which China responded by imposing its own sanctions on 106 American imports. “Because they’ve been going on for many years. Trump is really the first president to fight back” against Beijing’s “unfair” trade practices and theft of intellectual property, Efe news agency quoted Kudlow as saying. The list, which includes cutting edge technological items in the aero-

space and robotics industries, is now in a 30-day public commentary period to give interested parties a chance to comment on it, make suggestions and propose changes or exemptions before the tariffs would enter into effect. Despite the Chinese retaliatory action, Kudlow said that the relationship between Trump and his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, is “unusually good”. “Trump is putting his cards on the table, he’s standing up for this country,” Kudlow said. “But he’s also standing up for better world trade. President Trump regards himself as a free trader. I do too. But the path to free trade, real free trade, must include tremendous reforms and stopping these illegal and unfair trade practices.” —IANS

escalated. The US says it is taxing Chinese products as punitive measures against Beijing’s arm-twisting American companies to transfer their technology in return of let-

ting them do business in China. Beijing says although doors for talks are always open for Washington, it will give befitting reply if it faces the heat.

orth and South Korea on April 5 began a working meeting on the border, to establish protocols and security measures for a scheduled summit between leaders of the two countries on April 27. The meeting was held in the Joint Security Area, a spokesman for the South Korean presidential office told Efe news. The South Korean delegation was led by Kim Sang-gyun, a senior official of the National Intelligence Service, while the North Korean team was headed by Kim Chang-son, an official of

the State Affairs Commission. Besides protocol and security for the summit, both parties will also discuss media arrangements. The April 27 meeting will be the first inter-Korean summit since 2007, while the one in May — the exact date for which is yet to be fixed — will bring together US President Donald Trump and the North Korean leader. The meeting between Kim and Trump is set to be the first one involving the leaders of the two countries, after seven decades of confrontation and 25 years of failed negotiations and tensions over North Korea’s nuclear program.

he Lahore High Court on April 5 ordered government authorities to not “harass” banned Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD) chief and 2008 Mumbai terror attack mastermind Hafiz Saeed and allow him to continue his “social welfare activities”. The founder of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) alleged in his petition that the government was interfering in his party’s welfare projects because it had bowed down to pressure from India and the US, Dawn online reported. The petition argued that barring an organization or party from indulging in charity work was against the Constitution. Justice Ameenud Din Khan, who heard the petition filed by lawyer A.K. Dogar on Saeed’s behalf, also directed the authorities to submit their responses on the petition by April 23. Saeed had filed a nearly identical petition through Dogar before the same judge in March. That time, Justice Khan had directed the federal and provincial governments to submit their responses by April 27. However, due to the similar nature of both petitions, the court

decided to club the cases. After hearing Saeed’s arguments in Thursday’s hearing, Justice Khan issued notices to the federal and provincial governments again, directing them to file their replies. The hearing was subsequently adjourned until April 23. On January 1, the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan had barred JuD and several other such organizations named in a list of banned outfits by the UN Security Council from collecting donations in the country.

The federal government had followed suit on February 12, with President Mamnoon Hussain amending the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA) 1997 and issuing the amended Anti-Terrorism Ordinance 2018, following which the personnel banned by the UN stood banned in Pakistan as well. Earlier this week, the US designated LeT’s political front, the Milli Muslim League (MML), as well as another front organization Tehreeke-Azadi-e-Kashmir (TAJK) as foreign terrorist groups.

eary-eyed relatives and friends waited for hours in the heat outside the airport this week as the mortal remains of 38 Indians, killed by the Islamic State terror group in Iraq’s Mosul in 2014, arrived here on a special IAF aircraft. A pall of gloom descended at the airport complex here as 31 coffins carrying the mortal remains of men from Punjab and Himachal Pradesh were brought out of the airport building to be taken to their native places in specially arranged ambulances. Families and fellow villagers had been camping outside the airport complex since early morning, waiting for the mortal remains to arrive. “It is a very sad moment for all

This is part of the company’s $50 million investment in real estate across two other West African countries, Gambia and Senegal, its General Manager, Tarun Singh, told IANS. CHANDIGARH: Minister of State for External Affairs V.K. Singh’s statement that the Indians killed in Iraq were illegal immigrants and the Rs 10 lakh compensation announced by the Central government to families of the victims sparked a fresh controversy in Punjab. Congress legislators from Amritsar and Gurdaspur districts criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the “meagre relief” announced for the kin of the victims killed by the Islamic State terrorists in Mosul town in Iraq in June 2014. They also demanded that the government must pay Rs 1 crore each to the families of the 39 victims.

It is unfortunate that we had to get them back in coffins,” he told the media. Although 39 Indians were killed as the Islamic State took over Mosul in June 2014, the mortal remains of 38 were brought back as the identification of one body is still pending. While the coffins of 31 victims — 27 from Punjab and four from Himachal Pradesh — were handed over to the respective authorities at the Amritsar airport here, seven coffins were shifted to another aircraft to be flown to West Bengal (3) and Bihar (4). The mortal remains of four construction workers hailing from Himachal Pradesh were taken to their native places, officials said.

Indian jailed for molesting woman IANS, SINGAPORE

A

n Indian yoga instructor here has been sentenced to nine months’ jail and a fine of 1,000 Singapore dollars for molesting a woman. Rakesh Kumar Prasad, 26, was sentenced on Monday after he was found guilty of “outraging the modesty of a woman” and “using criminal force on her”, the Strait

Times reported. The trial in the court began in 2016. Prasad, who was trained and certified in Kolkata, reportedly cupped and pinched his assistant manager’s breast while she was doing yoga on April 26, 2015. Despite the woman’s resistance and being told to stop, Prasad molested her again in a similar manner. In his submission, Deputy Pub-

lic Prosecutor James Chew said: “The victim ... did not leave the class or seek help immediately because she was in a state of shock and disbelief. She felt helpless in that environment and did not

know what to do. “She had felt violated and embarrassed by the accused’s actions and was in disbelief that this could happen to her in a yoga class,” Chew said.

Sahara Desert has grown by 10% since 1920: Study IANS, NEW YORK

T

he Sahara Desert has expanded by about 10 per cent since 1920 partly due to human-caused climate change, say researchers including one of Indian-origin. The findings of their study, published in the Journal of Climate, suggest that other deserts could be expanding as well. “Our results are specific to the Sahara, but they likely have implications for the world’s other deserts,” said senior author of the study Sumant Nigam, an atmospheric and ocean scientist at University of Maryland in the US. Deserts are defined by low aver-

age annual rainfall — usually 100 millimetres of rain per year or less. The researchers analysed annual

rainfall data recorded throughout Africa from 1920 to 2013 and found that the Sahara, which occu-

pies much of the northern part of the continent, expanded by 10 percent during this period. When the scientists looked at seasonal trends over the same period, the most notable expansion of the Sahara occurred in summer, resulting in a nearly 16 per cent increase in the desert’s average area over the 93-year span covered by the study. The results suggest that humancaused climate change, as well as natural climate cycles, caused the desert’s expansion. The geographic pattern of expansion varied from season to season, with the largest differences along the Sahara’s northern and southern boundaries, the study said.

ndians have always loved their whiskey, and now they are more open to experimentation, says an industry expert. “People in India have always loved their whiskey. And with increasing aspirations, disposable incomes and exposure to global brands, I believe that they are more open to experiment, upgrade and try out different whiskies from the world,” Jeff Arnett, Master distiller at Jack Daniel’s, told IANS. “The premiumization of the retail environment and the lifestyle of consumers in India is also helping consumers getting more evolved with whiskey. There has been a tremendous increase in the cocktail culture and people are trying out cocktails made with whiskies.

BRIEFS Boman Irani to walk for a charity NEW DELHI: Actor Boman Irani will walk the ramp for an annual fundraising event organized by NGO Lakshyam. The NGO, which works towards upliftment of children and women of at-risk communities through education, employment and resource mobilization, is organizing the event at The Celebration Garden, where many designers will come together to show their support. Boman will walk for designer Varun Bahl at the event which will also see the participation of designers and celebrities.

Taapsee to endorse skin care brand MUMBAI: Actress Taapsee Pannu has been roped in to endorse skin and personal care brand Nivea India. She will endorse the brand’s body wash and shower gel categories. “It’s such an amazing feeling to be roped in by a brand for which you have been a consumer since years.” The quality, reach and range of their products is so wide that it’s an honor to be chosen as their brand ambassador,” Taapsee said in a statement. The Naam Shabana actress was found to be the “perfect ambassador” due to her youth icon status. On the acting front, Taapsee is busy with Manmarziyan. The film is directed by Anurag Kashyap. It also stars Abhishek Bachchan and Vicky Kaushal. —IANS

The premiumization of the retail environment and the lifestyle of consumers in India is also helping consumers getting more evolved with whiskey.

“There are a lot of craft cocktail bars that have come up in India and interestingly there are many women who have adopted whiskey as their preferred choice of drinks,” added Arnett, who was in India for

a masterclass last month. In 2008, Arnett took on the mantle as the seventh distiller in the 150 years of Jack Daniel’s existence. Arnett says India has traditionally been a scotch market.

“But we have seen some good growth here in the past few years,” he added. Pointing at another trend, he said: “I think from our point of view, American whiskies are seeing a renaissance globally, including India. People are increasingly getting fascinated by mixology.” Arnett said “the well-travelled Indian millennial consumers are not very different than their counterparts across this digitally connected world”. What are his future plans for India? “India is one of our key emerging markets globally and has shown consistent double-digit growth for us throughout the last few years. We plan to build on this by continuing to educate consumers here about the nuances of the American whiskey.

Protect your face from sun rays IANS, NEW DELHI

S

ummer time means scorching heat, high humidity and harsh sun rays that can make your skin discolored, dry and dull. From opting for anti-fungal products to using facial mist can be some ways to retain the moisture of your skin. Gaurav Bhargav, Category Head - Beauty, Housejoy and Rinky Kapoor, Cosmetic Dermatologist, Esthetic Clinic give us easy and effective tips to keep skin look hydrated and healthy during the warmest season. Go easy: Since we produce more oil during the summer months, it’s tempting to use harsher scrubs and

face washes. These can strip the skin off its essential oils - so go for a mild foaming cleanser instead. If you perspire a lot, it’s more important to use a gentle cleanser as you will be washing your face multiple times a day.

Sunscreen ready: UV rays are one of the main causes of hyper pigmentation and skin discoloration. But this can be prevented by applying sunscreen an hour before you step out into the sun. Opt for anti-fungal products: Summers attract a lot of germs and fungal infections. It’s best to apply antifungal body washes, lotions and powders around this time to keep the germs and infections at bay. Exfoliate: Gentle exfoliating at least twice or thrice a week will help remove dead skin cells and it will also improve the blood circulation to the face. It can also allow your skin to absorb the moisturizing products better.

TORONTO: If you fear eating pasta will make your kids obese, hang on. A new study suggests that pasta may not contribute to weight gain or increase in body fat if consumed as part of a healthy dietary pattern. Carbohydrates get a lot of bad press and are blamed for the obesity epidemic but this negative attention may not be deserved for pasta, researchers from St. Michael’s Hospital in Ontario said. Unlike most ‘refined’ carbohydrates, which are rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream, pasta has a low glycemic index (GI), meaning it causes smaller increases in blood sugar levels than those caused by eating foods with a high glycemic index. “The study found that pasta didn’t contribute to weight gain or increase in body fat. In fact, analysis actually showed a small weight loss. So contrary to concerns, perhaps pasta can be part of a healthy diet such as a GI diet,” said lead author John Sievenpiper. For the study, published in the journal BMJ Open, researchers undertook a systematic review and meta-analysis of all of the available evidence from randomized controlled trials, the gold standard of research design. They identified 30 randomized control trials involving almost 2,500 people who ate pasta instead of other carbohydrates as part of a healthy low-glycemic index diet.

Staycations, solo travel: Travel trends for long weekends IANS, NEW DELHI

T

o loosen up and de-stress, millennials have understood that travelling is the best therapy. Utilizing long weekends, Indians are exploring more offbeat locations rather than going to another city with the same hustle bustle, say experts. Dhruv Raj Gupta, Founder and CEO, TripShelf and Dhruv Sharma, CEO and Founder of GuestHouser, have listed few travel trends this year: Staycation is in: Staycation or staying in the same city has undergone a very interesting paradigm shift due to over-tourism. Travellers are increasingly seeking out relaxed, luxury stays at holiday homes

around them in the same city. Choosing home stays over hotels: A growing population of well-travelled urban millennials has grown tired of conventional tourism; which focuses on the simple histor-

ical sightseeing and standardized hotel rooms. This population is looking for something more personal and unique wherein they can take a dip in an unfamiliar culture, and expe-

rience it by living with a native family. They also look forward to eating authentic food of the place they’re visiting and home stays thus prove to be a good option. Exotic or offbeat destinations: Stress busting and exploring unexplored places are the two top reasons for travel on long weekends amongst millennials instead of catching up with friends, research or writing. From quaint solo getaways to off-season mountain escapes and immersive adventures, urban millennials are not nervous about trying unexplored places. They prefer short backpacking trips with just 2-3 nights to stay, and don’t mind taking overnight buses or road trips to destinations within a distance of 400 km from Delhi.

‘Blackmail’ is wickedly, savagely funny satire

I

f I didn’t know about Irrfan’s health issue I’d still be shaken by his hangdog unenthusiastic expression as he plods through his chosen life of a born loser in this savagely funny satire on adultery and blackmail. In the strikingly shot (by cinematographer Jay Oza) opening we see Irrfan (Dev) struggling to stay afloat through his office hours, fighting shy of going home because the spark has gone from his marriage and wife who watches cheesy song sequences on television to while away her time. Actually, it was never there, the spark I mean. In a wedding song that comes on at the end of the film taken from Dev’s marriage to Reena

Film: ‘Blackmail’; Starring: Irrfan, Kirti Kulhari, Arunodoy Singh, Divya Dutta, Praduman Singh, Anuja Sathe, Omi Vaidya; Directed by Abhinay Deo; Rating: ****(4 Stars)

(Kirti Kulhari) seven years earlier, we see how mismatched and ill-atease the couple was. This is a marriage where adultery is waiting to happen. And it does

sooner than we expect. The takeoff point for the comedy is so steeply damning and done in the film with such humorous indulgence that we left pretty dazed by the absurdity of it all. From the adulterous episode Blackmail builds into an edifice of outrageous eventualities all bursting at the seams but never getting out of control, such is the director Abhinay Deo’s control over his characters, all

victims of a scam that boggles the mind, tickles the senses and sets our imagination on the wildest wackiest ride since Abhinay Deo’s Delhi Belly. While the writing sparkles with a roguish splendor, and the director fills the frames with a fiendish glee. The narrative does spark off a distant pensiveness in indicating the breach of modern urban marriages. While Irrfan’s marital bedroom is shattered by Arundoy’s presence, Arunodoy’s own marriage with the bully wife played with splendid spleen by Divya Dutta, is no laughing matter. She treats him like her dog. He doesn’t mind as long as his monthly allowance keeps coming. Arunodoy sets aside his ego to make the husband a henpecked gold-digger.

CG’s executive seminar on ‘Make In India’ drive

No premium processing of H-1B visa till Sept.

BY A STAFF WRITER ASHINGTON, DC -- The United States on March 21 announced the suspension of premium processing of all H-1B visa petitions for the fiscal year 2019. The US Citizenship and Immigration Services said the temporary suspension would help reduce the “overall H-1B visa processing time.” The H-1B petition filing is for 2019 beginning October 1. “We will notify the public before resuming premium processing for cap-subject H-1B petitions or making any other premium processing updates,” the federal agency said. USCIS also announced that petitions for H-1B visas will be accepted from April 2. The H-1B program offers temporary US visas that allow companies to hire highly-skilled foreign professionals working in areas with shortages of qualified American workers. Indians get the most H-1B visas although there are no national quotas for the facility nor is it specifically designed for Indians. The suspension of premium processing of all H-1B petitions, subject to the annual cap, is expected to last until September 10. The USCIS said that during this time “we will continue to accept premium processing requests for H-1B petitions that are not subject to the fiscal 2019 cap.” “While premium processing is suspended, a petitioner may submit a request to expedite an FY 2019 cap-subject H-1B petition if it meets the Expedite Criteria,” it added. The USCIS said it was currently unable to process these H-1B petitions due to the high volume of incoming petitions and the significant surge in premium processing requests over the past few years.

Chicago Medical Society Day Penn celebrates Women’s Day

(L-R) Alderman Margaret Laurino, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel & Dr. Vemuri Murthy

BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL -- The Chicago City Council on March 28 adopted a resolution designating March 30 as the “Chicago Medical Society Day”. This day is also observed as the “National Doctor’s Day”. Dr. Vemuri Murthy is the current president of Chicago Medical Society and a past president of the Indian American Medical Association, Illinois. This proclamation is an important milestone in the annals of one of the largest County Medical Societies in the US founded in 1850, currently representing 17,000 Cook County physicians serving 5 million patients.

C

This recognition is one more way the Chicago Medical Society is working to educate legislators, citizens, and groups about the important work of our local physicians and their representative organization. Chicago Medical Society conducts the community CPR programs (Project SMILE, “Saving More Illinois Lives through Education”) in Chicago communities partnering with organizations such as the Indian American Medical Association, Illinois. US Congressmen, Illinois Legislators and Members of Chicago Consular Corps (including the Chicago Indian Consulate) were among the participants of the CPR program.

BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL – Penn (Penn in Indian language Tamil meaning woman), a group of extremely talented women belonging to the Indian Tamil community in the Chicagoland area came together to present an outstanding program for celebrating the International Women’s Day on March 17. The air was festive with the organizers, guest speakers and most of the audience members attired in the most spectacular array of colors in saris, the traditional wear of India. The event started with the guest speaker Rajeshwari Chandrasekaran, a consul with Indian embassy, setting the tone and mood for the evening, which was a very happy one with her witty, down-to-earth speech. Dr. Mallika Rajendran (gynaecologist) addressed various women’s health issues--from puberty to adulthood and beyond. Dr. Viji

C

Susarla, a clinical Psychologist, spoke on children. The next presentation was by Amrita Raghuraman on e-cigarettes and vaping among young ones which was an eye-opener for many parents. The last was a stellar presentation by Attorney Sharanya Gururajan on estate planning (will and trust). She was candid, straight forward and funny. The most interesting was the interactive session between the experts in various fields and the audience members. Added to the fun were the impromptu stand-up comedy item, the aromatic spread of food, beautiful stalls selling colorful Indian clothing, fashion jewelry, and hand-made gift items. All the audience members received a lovely goody bag & a copy of the Penn Magazine done so artistically, filled with pages of articles, short stories, poems, sketches, photographs and recipes as a take-home souvenir.

Turban-tying event on UIC campus

BY DR. NILESH.D. MEHTA HICAGO, IL -- The Sikh Student Association at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) partnered with the Sikh Resource Society to host a turban-tying event on the UIC campus. Students, faculty, staff, the university administration and the university police were present. Participants observed or had turbans tied, asked questions about Sikhism, and experienced a vital part of the Sikh identity.

C

While some participants wore their turbans during the entire function while the demonstration was going on, some took them home to practice. The Sikh community was represented by Amardev Singh Badesha, whose two sons went to UIC and were active in the Sikh Student Association there. Badesha is also a Board member of the Sikh Religious Society, Chicago and the principal, Sunday School in Palatine Gurdwara Sahib. Thakar Singh Basati also helped the students in conducting the event.

The event precedes the Sikh Student Association’s “Langar on Campus” to be held at UIC on April 10, which will be followed by distribution of food to the homeless population of Chicago The Sikh Student Association at UIC: Kanwar Mukker, Avneet Chawla, Jasleen Kaur, Jagjot Singh, Harveen Kaur, Jagjit Bhatia, Harshleen Kaur, Amberdeep Singh, Simmi Dhami, Akum Singh, Ramandeep Saini, Balpreet Singh, Harsimranpreet Singh, Simardeep Singh, Simran Singh.

YouTube attacker was ‘harsh critic’ BY DR. NILESH.D. MEHTA AN BRUNO, CA -- Nasim Aghdam, the woman who wounded three people with gunfire at YouTube’s headquarters on April 3, seemed to have an active presence online. Images and videos uploaded to Instagram and YouTube accounts connected to Aghdam (39), who is believed to have killed herself during the attack, contained political messages and fitness tips, but also featured some heavy criticism of YouTube. Several of the social-media accounts-including Facebook and Instagram accounts and several YouTube channels linked to Aghdam--have been taken down. Her father, Ismail Aghdam, told reporters: “She was angry” at YouTube.

S

Suspect Nasim Aghdam

Aghdam had expressed some heavy criticism over YouTube’s move to demonetize certain channels. She took issue specifically with what she believed to be a targeted reduction in viewership on her videos. Aghdam also seemed to have engaged in some political speech. An Instagram account believed to be

run by her had more than 16,000 followers before it was shut down. In one missive about YouTube’s move to demonetize certain channels, one post said: “There is no equal growth opportunity on YOUTUBE or any other video sharing site, your channel will grow if they want to!!!!!” Aghdam, a resident of San Diego, drove from Southern California to San Bruno, the Bay Area home of YouTube’s headquarters, days before the shooting, She is believed to have used a handgun to shoot three people before fatally shooting herself. The police are still searching for a motive in the attack. Media reports said Aghdam had been missing days before the shooting.

BY A STAFF WRITER UNNYVALE, CA – An Indian American DACA recipient, who has lived in the US since the age of six, is heading to Washington, DC on April 12, where he plans to meet with members of Congress to advocate for a clean DREAM Act, which will protect the nation’s 1.5 million undocumented youth from deportation. “A pathway to citizenship would be great,” says Ruchir Parikh, a resident of Sunnyvale, Calif., who earned his degree in industrial technology from San Jose State University and currently works in IT at Okta. “I have grown up here and see myself as an American. There has never been a point in my life when I have felt less than American,” he told reporters. “But I’m okay with anything that allows me to stay here with my family,” he added, noting that his DACA status ends in February 2019. The Trump administration rescinded the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program on September 5, 2017, but two lower court decisions have allowed the program to remain in place temporarily, and for renewal applications to be accepted. Parikh’s DACA status allows him to work and drive in the US, besides protecting him from deportation. He has already filed for a renewal. Parikh and his parents came to the US in 1991 from Punjab, at the height of the Sikh separatist movement, seeking asylum. The Parikhs are not Sikh. Parikh said his father has spoken of being persecuted by members of Sikh separatist groups. Arriving in the US, the Parikhs immediately filed for asylum. But their case was not heard for 12 years until October 2003. They then did not receive a decision on their case until December 2009. Eighteen years after the family filed its asylum application, asylum officers with US Citizenship and Immigration Services determined that Ruchir’s father had been persecuted, but that the country conditions in India had improved since 1991, according to Parikh’s attorney, Kalpana Peddibhotla. The Parikhs were then referred to Immigration Court but did not get their first court date until May 2010. Their first hearing date on the merits of the case was not until September 2012. Meanwhile, Ruchir’s younger sister Ridhi, who was born in the US, had turned 21 and was able to sponsor her parents, who now have green cards. But Ruchir is not considered an immediate family relative: only the parents, spouses, and children of US citizens fall into that category. Parikh is the sole breadwinner for his family. His father suffers from retinopathy, which has left him mostly blind in both eyes; he also suffers from severe arthritis, which does not allow him to lift things. His mother is a home-maker, who nevertheless ran two family-owned shops.

Indian wins $1 m in Florida lottery

NJ state Attorney General Gurbir Grewal

BY A STAFF WRITER asmine Patel, a 35-year-old Indian American from Jacksonville, Florida has claimed a $1-million prize in the $5,000,000 Monopoly Florida Edition scratch-off game at the Florida Lottery Headquarters in Tallahassee. Patel chose to receive his winnings in a lump sum payment of $770,000, he purchased the ticket from Dunn Food Store in Jacksonville and the retailer will receive a $2,000 bonus commission for it. The $20 scratch-off game was launched in July 2016 and features six top prizes of $5 million and 20 prizes of $1 million. The scratch-off games generated more than $784 million for the Educational Enhancement Trust Fund during the last fiscal year.

J

BY A STAFF WRITER EW YORK, NY -- Twelve states have agreed to sign onto a lawsuit which seeks to block a question about citizenship being asked on the 2020 Census, stating that the query violates the Constitution, which mandates that all residents of the US must be counted, regardless of immigration status. New York state Attorney General Eric Schneiderman said on March 27 he would lead a multistate lawsuit to block the decision. Separately, the state of California filed a lawsuit on March 27 with the District Court of Northern California. New Jersey state Attorney General Gurbir Grewal, who is Indian American, has announced that his state would join Schneiderman’s lawsuit. “Notwithstanding the Administration’s rhetoric, we don’t need a citizenship question

N

on the 2020 Census. And the reality is that such a question would only do harm,” said Grewal. “Particularly in the current national climate, a citizenship question will obviously cause great consternation and discourage participation in the Census. That lack of participation will inevitably have farreaching, negative effects – particularly in New Jersey, where we have the third largest percentage of immigrants in the country,” said Grewal, the first Sikh American attorney general in the nation. Commerce Department Secretary announced late night on March 26 that the 2020 Census form would include a question regarding citizenship. “Having citizenship data at the Census block level will permit more effective enforcement of the Voting Rights Act. Obtaining complete and accurate

information to meet this legitimate government purpose outweighs the limited potential adverse impacts,” said Ross in a press statement. The announcement has unleashed a volley of ire in the immigrant community, which believes that asking about citizenship will discourage minority communities from participating, leading to a huge undercount. The last time the Census included a question about citizenship was in 1950. Several civil rights organizations i m m e d i a t e l y d e n o u n c e d R o s s ’s announcement. “Ross is simply trying to shrink-wrap a respectable label on a bottle filled with Trump’s poisonous partisan agenda,” said Indian American Vanita Gupta, president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, during a conference call with reporters on March 27.

Baby born on highway during traffic jam BY A STAFF WRITER PRINGFIELD, NJ -- A baby girl was delivered safely during a traffic jam on a New Jersey highway with the help of firefighters and police officers. Anuj Desai said he and his wife, Vendhana, were headed from Hoboken to Morristown Memorial Hospital on March 20 in the morning when traffic came to a halt. Desai pulled onto the shoulder of Route 78 and called 911. But Vendhana said they wouldn’t have time, so firefighters from the Springfield department helped her give birth on the side of the road. Officials say the umbilical cord was wrapped around the baby’s neck. But Capt. Michael Mastroeni was able to fix the problem. Chief Carlo Palumbo clamped and cut the cord. It was the second emergency delivery for Palumbo, who previously helped a woman give birth in a bank parking lot. Baby Sonia was quickly wrapped in blankets on the chilly 30-degree morning, and the family continued in an ambulance to

Campaign poster is defaced in Newark

BY A STAFF WRITER EWARK, NJ -- A swastika was spray-painted on the campaign poster of a long-time Newark councilman, who called the act “horrible” and “a message of hate” on the eve of the Easter holiday weekend. The Newark police are investigating the defaced campaign banner as a bias crime and released photos of a suspect seen walking in a hooded sweatshirt. The poster, hung on 400 block of Broadway in the North Ward, pictured Quintana and North Ward Councilman Anibal Ramos Jr., urging residents to vote in the May 8 elections. Both are seeking reelection to their seats on Mayor Ras Baraka’s slate. But on March 29, a blue swastika was painted over Quintana’s face and Ramos’ photo had also been defaced. The sign hangs about a block away from Quintana’s office. “I was very upset about it,” said Quintana, who said he’s never had this happen to a campaign poster. He was first elected in 1994. “I hope there’s some justice.” A total of 39 candidates have been certified for the city’s elections -- in which all nine council seats and the mayor’s term are up. “It is unfortunate that someone would deface a legally-placed campaign sign with a symbol of hatred,” Ramos said. “I have confidence in the authorities in their investigation of this incident.” Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose said the incident remained under investigation.

87 million users hit: Facebook

In a press conference, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg admitted that information of up to 87 million people may have been improperly shared with the British firm Cambridge Analytica

Over half a million Indians’ Facebook data shared with CA

IANS, SAN FRANCISCO

F

acebook has admitted that information of up to 87 million people, mostly in the US, may have been improperly shared with the British political consultancy firm Cambridge Analytica. In a press conference this week, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said that they did not put out the 50 million number as previously reported. “That came from other parties. We wanted to wait until we had the full understanding. I am quite confident that given our analysis, it is not more than 87 million. It very well could be less, but we wanted to put out the maximum we felt that it could be as that analysis says,” Zuckerberg told media persons. Nearly one million British users were also affected by the Cambridge Analytica data leak. On a question if he would testify in front of Parliamentarians in the House of Commons in the UK, the Facebook CEO said: “We announced today that I’m going to be testifying in front of Congress. I

Lockheed Martin to build supersonic aircraft WASHINGTON: Taking another step toward building a quieter supersonic aircraft, the US space agency has awarded a $247.5 million contract to the global aerospace company Lockheed Martin. Lockheed Martin has been selected to build a new piloted Xplane called the Low-Boom Flight Demonstrator (LBFD). The X-plane will create a “gentle thump”, a sound that would be no louder than closing a car door. “Work under the contract began on April 2 and runs through December 31, 2021,” NASA said in a statement this week. Lockheed Martin will complete the design and fabrication of the 94-footlong experimental aircraft which will cruise at 16,700 meters at a speed of about 1,500 km per hour. It will create a sound about as loud as a car door closing — 75 Perceived Level decibel (PLdB) — significantly lower than the 105 PLdB of the earlier Concorde airliner. After the first flight in late 2021, the agency will perform additional flight tests to prove the quiet supersonic technology works as designed, aircraft performance is robust, and it’s safe to operate in the National Airspace System. — IANS

imagine that is going to cover a lot of ground. “I am going to be sending one of our top folks. I believe it’s going to be Schrep, the CTO, or Chris Cox, the product officer. These are the top folks who I run the company with — to answer additional questions from countries and other places.” Zuckerberg also announced an internal audit had uncovered a fresh problem. Malicious actors had been abusing a feature that let users search for

one another by typing in email addresses or phone numbers into Facebook’s search box. As a result, many people’s public profile information had been “scraped” and matched to the contact details, which had been obtained from elsewhere. Facebook has now blocked the facility. “We wanted to shut that down because we felt like there were too many apps and too many folks who would have had access to people’s content, and that would have been problematic,” Zuckerberg said.

NEW DELHI: Facebook Chief Technology Officer Mike Schroepfer, in a blog post this week, revealed that data of nearly 560 thousand Indian users may have been “improperly” shared with British political analytics company Cambridge Analytica. The blog showed countryspecific break-up of people affected by the data breach. While most users are from the US — over 70 million — 562,455 Indian users’ data has also been shared with Cambridge Analytica. “In total, we believe the Facebook information of up to 87 million people — mostly in the US — may have been improperly shared with Cambridge Analytica,” Schroepfer wrote. “Starting on Monday, April 9, we’ll show people a link at the top of their News Feed so they can see what

apps they use — and the information they have shared with those apps,” he added. People will also be able to remove apps that they no longer want. “As part of this process, we will also tell people if their information may have been improperly shared with Cambridge Analytica,” Schroepfer posted. Facebook is enhancing its security features to ensure the integrity of upcoming key elections on its platform. This comes after Christopher Wylie, who blew the lid off the scandal, saying in a tweet that SCL Group, the parent organization of Cambridge Analytica, has its office headquartered in Ghaziabad and its regional offices in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Cuttack, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Indore, Kolkata, Patna and Pune.

Microsoft to invest $5bn in IoT globally IANS, NEW DELHI

M

icrosoft will invest $5 billion in the Internet of Things (IoT) globally, including in India over the next four years, the company said this week. With Microsoft’s IoT platform spanning Cloud, operating system and devices, the company is simplifying the IoT journey so that any customer can create trusted, connected solutions.

“Microsoft in India is committed to helping everyone bring their digital transformation vision to life across every industry,” the company said in a blog post. IoT is gathering momentum in India, impacting daily lives in saving electricity, resources, predictive healthcare, automobile safety and more. Microsoft Azure is the preferred platform powering a variety of IoT devices. In India, TechSpan Engineering

has implemented a monitoring system built on the Azure IoT platform, using sensors provided by the Austrian firm s::can and their India Partner Aaxis Nano. Using the power of the Microsoft cloud, IoT and data, the solution taps into the robust s::can sensors to provide measurements across 17 parameters. “The solution is currently being used for monitoring drinking water quality online by the Banga-

lore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (125 stations) and Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Drainage Board (KUWSDB) in Hubli, Dharwad and Bijapur (3 stations),” Microsoft said.

China can help India take a giant leap in Artificial Intelligence NISHANT ARORA, NEW DELHI

T

ech honchos in Silicon Valley are deeply worried at China’s rapid progress in harnessing Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology that has shown encouraging results in changing the way we work and live. Measured by start-up financing deals and dollars from venture capitalists, the US’ AI start-up ecosystem currently dominates — followed by China, says an Accenture analysis “Rewire for Growth”. When it comes to India, the number of AI start-ups has increased since 2011 at a com-

“China’s AI programme is highly structured and driven ‘top down’ whereas India’s approach is more ‘organic’ — at least till this point — driven largely by the private sector and driven by their unique needs for AI,” said Dr Prashant Pradhan, CTO, IBM India/South Asia. Google, Amazon, Facebook and Apple are spearheading AI innovations in the US, and Alibaba, Tencent and Baidu are funding the AI research in China. In order to become a true AI powerhouse, it is high time that New Delhi makes Beijing a bigger partner in fuelling AI research at home.

Miscarriage linked to high BP A study shows that elevated blood pressure is associated with a higher risk of heart disease later, which may also have an effect on reproductive health IANS, NEW YORK

H

igh blood pressure before conception and early in pregnancy may increase the risk of pregnancy loss, even if the woman does not have a hypertension diagnosis, new research has found. “Elevated blood pressure among young adults is associated with a higher risk of heart disease later in life, and this study suggests it may also have an effect on reproductive health,” said lead author of the study Carrie Nobles from Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute for Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) in Maryland, US. BRIEFS What infants with heart defect tell about mothers TORONTO: Women who give birth to infants with congenital heart defects may be at an increased risk of heart problems, that include heart attack and heart failure, later in life, warns a new study published in the journal Circulation. Compared to mothers of infants without congenital heart defects, the researchers found 43 per cent higher risk of any cardiovascular hospitalization in women whose offspring had critical heart defects.

New imaging agent for neurological diseases LONDON: Researchers have developed a new imaging agent that could help guide and assess treatments for people with various neurological diseases, including Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and Multiple Sclerosis (MS). The agent, which is used in PET scans, targets receptors in nerve cells in the brain that are involved in learning and memory, said the study published in The Journal of Nuclear Medicine. “The significance lies in the fact that we have for the first time developed a useful PET ‘radioligand’ (a radioactive bio-chemical substance) that can be applied to image the ‘GluN2B’ receptor subunit of the ‘NMDA’ receptor complex in humans,” said an author. — IANS

Physicians treating women of reproductive age should pay attention to slightly elevated blood pressure because it may have other notwell-recognized effects, such as adverse pregnancy outcome,” said senior author of the study Enrique Schisterman from NICHD. “Preconception is a previously unrecognized critical window for intervention such as lifestyle changes that can help prevent later heart disease and may also improve reproductive health,” Schisterman said.

Red meat may up colon cancer risk IANS, LONDON

H

aving a diet free from red meat can help women reduce the risk of a type of colon cancer, suggests new research. “The impact of different types of red meat and dietary patterns on cancer locations is one of the biggest challenges in the study of diet and colorectal cancer,” said lead author Diego Rada Fernandez de Jauregui from the University of Leeds in Britain.

“Our research is looking at this relationship and while further analysis is needed, it could provide information for those with some history of colorectal cancer and those working on prevention,” he said. The findings, published in the International Journal of Cancer, showed that those regularly eating red meat compared to a red meatfree diet had higher rates of distal colon cancer — cancer found on the descending section of the colon, where faeces is stored.

The study showed that those regularly eating red meat compared to a red meat-free diet had higher rates of distal colon cancer.

The study used data from the United Kingdom Women’s Cohort Study. This cohort included 32,147 women from England, Wales and Scotland. “Our study helps shed light on how meat consumption

may affect colorectum differently and emphasizes the importance of reliable dietary reporting from large groups of people,” said study coauthor Janet Cade, Professor at the University of Leeds.

‘Sanitary pads need to be made biodegradable’ SOMRITA GHOSH, NEW DELHI

P

eriods: The word is no longer a taboo. Both women and men, in recent times, have spoken out about menstrual health and there has been quite a lot of awareness over it through films and other medium. Unfortunately, there is not as much awareness about the ‘long lasting’, ‘stain free’, ‘soft’ sanitary pads which different multinationals promote and which are easily available with any chemist. Experts point to the harm that these plastic-based sanitary napkins have been causing — both to the environment and health. “Most of the sanitary napkins in India are just thrown in the garbage or flushed down the toilet. It is a

havoc environmental challenge as these pads take around 500-800 years to biodegrade,” Swati Singh Sambyal, Waste Management Manager of Centre for Environment Science, told IANS. “And every used sanitary napkin

carries two grams of nonbiodegradable plastic. So the amount of non-biodegradable plastic accumulated every month is very high, a factor strong enough to raise concern over the crisis which environment is facing cur-

rently,” Sambyal noted. According to the National Family Health Survey (NFHS) 2015-16 report, around 48 per cent rural women use sanitary napkin while in urban areas the percentage is around 77 per cent. Recent data provided by Menstrual Health Alliance India states that menstrual waste collected across the country, primarily consisting of sanitary napkins which is disposed of as routine waste along with other household garbage, is 45 per cent. According to the Municipal Solid Waste (Management and Handling) Rules, 2,000 soiled napkins and blood-soaked cotton are disposed of after segregation into biodegradable and non-biodegradable components.
