As of Wednesday night 218 Representatives, all Democrats except for an Independent, have come out in support of impeachment assuring its passage in the 435-member legislature. Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced on September 24 that the Democrats would launch the impeachment and demanded that Trump hand over to Congress the transcript of the conversation and the whistleblower complaint filed by a government employee alleging that Trump had sought illegal favors during the conversation. Hillary Clinton backs Trump impeachment for ‘betrayal’ WASHINGTON: Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Wednesday said she supports impeachment of the US President Donald Trump, saying he has “betrayed” the country. “The president of the United States has betrayed our country. That’s not a political statement- it’s a harsh reality, and we must act. “He is a clear and present danger to the things that keep us strong and free. I support impeachment,” she tweeted. On Tuesday, the 2016 Democratic presidential nominee told People Magazine that she supports impeaching Trump in light of her former presidential campaign rival’s actions involving Ukraine. “I’m in favor of moving toward impeachment. I did not come to that decision easily or quickly, but this is an emergency as I see it,” she said in the interview. “This latest behavior around Ukraine, trying to enlist the President of Ukraine in a plot to undermine former Vice President Biden or lose the military aid he needs to defend against Trump’s

NEW YORK: Democratic Speaker Nancy Pelosi has announced that the House of Representatives will launch impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump, roiling the nation’s politics in the year leading to the presidential elections. After resisting demands from many party members, Pelosi finally agreed on Tuesday to start the process, even if it ultimately will be symbolic as the Republicancontrolled Senate is unlikely to vote Trump out of office, while deepening the political divide. The impeachment is a continuation of the allegations of

collusion with foreigners in election interference made against Trump. The new allegations that the House will investigate in the impeachment Nancy Pelosi process relate to Trump asking the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden and his son over their business dealings and had frozen $391 million in aid to that country a few days before his conversation with Zelensky. —IANS
At his news conference in New York on Wednesday, Trump whose moods ranged from rage to selfpity called the impeachment proposal a “joke”.
‘Democrats have the votes’ IANS, WASHINGTON
D
emocrats already have a majority of votes in the lower house in favor of starting impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump. Between 218 to 219 lawmakers (all of them Democrats except one who was elected as a Republican and is now an independent) have spoken out in favor of initiating impeachment proceedings against Trump, reports Efe news. A total of 218 votes are needed for a majority in the house of representatives, which was secured for the first time on Wednesday, a day after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced a formal impeachment inquiry into Trump. Fewer than 20 of the 235 Democratic lawmakers in the lower house are still opposed to or have not explicitly said they are in favour of the political trial. If the lower house votes in favor of impeachment, a trial will be held in the Senate - which has a slim Republican majority of 53-47. A two-thirds majority is needed in the 100-member upper house to actually impeach the president.
US President Donald Trump.
Pelosi’s decision to launch an impeachment inquiry came after news broke out that Trump asked Kiev for a “favour” of investigating former Vice President and Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden and his son, Hunter, for alleged corruption in Ukraine. The Democrats have accused Trump of betraying the constitution and national security by asking a foreign government to investigate Biden, who is among the favourites to win the Democratic primary next year. Republican House Minority Leader Kevin
McCarthy slammed the launch of the impeachment inquiry by the Democrat opposition and called it a “dark day for America”. On Wednesday, the White House released the transcript of a phone conversation between Trump and his Ukrainian counterpart, Vladimir Zelensky, which took place on July 25 and whose existence was revealed after a whistleblower inside the US intelligence community filed a complaint alleging that Trump made inappropriate comments during the call.

MP sex scandal could get bigger INDORE/BHOPAL: The honey-trap racket, which is unravelling as one of the biggest sex scandal of Madhya Pradesh involving political leaders, businessmen and bureaucrats, reminds one of the ‘Vyapam’ scam which rocked the state 6 years ago. It started a week ago, when MP police arrested two women and a driver on the complaint of an engineer Harbhajan Singh posted in Indore. A woman called Monika made his video having sex with her and tried to extort Rs 3 crore to keep her mouth shut. She was arrested while taking the first instalment of Rs 50 lakh from Singh. This led to the unearthing of the biggest honey-trap and blackmailing racket that is now threatening to reach the doorstep of many top bureaucrats and politicians. The racket was apparently to procure lucrative government contracts, running into several hundred crores, from the targeted VIPs. Most of the contracts were given to reputed companies by the kingpin Shweta Jain and her aide. —IANS

Announcing the schedule of the Assembly polls in both the states, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sunil Arora said, “The Assembly polls in Haryana and Maharashtra will be held on October 21 and the counting of votes will take place on October 24.” He said the notification for the elections will be issued on September 27. “Last date for filing nomination is October 4, while the scrutiny of the nomination papers will be done on October 5,” he said. The CEC said that the last day for withdrawing nominations is October 7. Is everything fine with BJP-Sena combine? MUMBAI: As Maharashtra gears up for the Assembly elections next month, all looks fine with the ruling BJP-Shiv Sena combine on the face of it but beneath the surface, differences persist on the seat-sharing issue. The two allies are yet to firm up the arrangement for the October 21 polls and the reason cited is the ongoing ‘Pitrapaksh’, a fortnight-long period considered inauspicious by Hindus. The eagerly-watched and anticipated tie-up between the BJP and Shiv Sena has apparently hit a roadblock, with the latter insisting on a 50:50 seat-sharing formula and rotating the CM’s post, which is not acceptable to the former. Reflecting the trouble being encountered, a harried MP of Shiv
Sena Sanjay Raut has compared the situation to India’s partition of 1947, saying it is more difficult than even that episode. The Sena is worried that if the alliance isn’t finalized soon, around a dozen sitting legislators, including some ministers, may ditch it for the BJP. BJP President Amit Shah was likely to visit Mumbai today but seems to have deferred it to after the end of ‘Pitrupaksh’ on Saturday. The political action in the alliance is expected to gain momentum thereafter. In the meantime, to show everything is hunky-dory, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Shiv Sena President Uddhav Thackeray have met or shared the stage on a couple of occasions in the recent days.
‘Khattar govt betrayed people, unemployment at all time high’ NEW DELHI: Eyeing a comeback in the Haryana Assembly polls, the Congress is all geared up to highlight the Manohar Lal Khattar-led government’s “betrayal” of the people, as unemployment rate is at an all time high in the state at 28 per cent. The 90 Assembly seats in Haryana will go to the polls on October 21, while the results will be declared on October 24. The Congress, which will soon announce its list of candidates, has also asked its leaders to mention
about them being “teetotallers” and “using khaadi” in their membership forms for getting tickets to contest the Assembly polls. In a candid interview with IANS, former Union Minister and Haryana Congress chief Kumari Selja said, “Every election brings challenges and this one is no different. The BJP government in the state made over 154 promises in its manifesto in 2014 but it has not been able to fulfil any of them.” “They bring in extraneous issues
and do not even look at how the people of Haryana are suffering,” she added. Accusing the state government of using diversionary tactics, Selja said, “They just want to white wash the real issues and raise different kind of matters, hoping that people will believe them and give BJP the mandate. “But I am 100 per cent sure that people have seen through this veil of lies unleashed by the BJP and they will teach the ruling party a lesson in the Assembly polls.” —IANS
ED books Sharad Pawar, Ajit Pawar in MSCB scam IANS, MUMBAI
T
riggering a political earthquake ahead of the October 21 Assembly elections in Maharashtra, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has registered a money laundering case against Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) President Sharad Pawar, his nephew Ajit Pawar, and several other politicians and officials in the Maharashtra State Cooperative Bank (MSCB) scam worth around Rs 25,000 crore, officials said here on Tuesday. It may be recalled that on August 22, IANS was the first and only news media to report that Sharad Pawar could face charges in the MSCB imbroglio which exploded after the Bombay High Court judgement last month. The ED’s move against the political bigwigs came after the Bombay HC ordered the Economic Offenses Wing (EOW) of the Mumbai Police to probe and file cases against the Pawars and others in the matter, setting the politicians scurrying.
NCP chief Sharad Pawar. (File Photo: IANS)
Following the EOW’s FIR in late August, the ED filed its case on Tuesday. Mumbai-based activist Surinder M. Arora had approached the Bombay HC, demanding an investigation into the MSCB scam. Earlier this month, Ajit Pawar and others had moved the Supreme Court to quash the proceedings in the matter, but Justices Arun Mishra and M.R. Shah had declined the plea and instead asked
the Mumbai Police to conduct a free and fair probe. The ED said there were several irregularities in loans provided to the cooperative sugar factories (CSFs) by the MSCB officials who were allegedly connected to the owners of the factories. The loans were sanctioned to the factories despite weak financials, negative net worth, collaterals not taken in many cases and additional facilities extended without any justi-
fication. This and other factors resulted in many of the cooperative sugar factories falling sick while many were sold at lower than the reserve price for the benefit of the buyers who were personally or politically connected with the MSCB directors whose consent was not taken before the sales. Besides, the ED said many transactions involved forged sales documents and many sales were effected without inviting tenders, thus flouting rules of the NABARD, RBI and SARFAESI. “There was huge misappropriation of funds on the part of committee members, directors and loan committee members of MSCB, acting in connivance to siphon off the money and causing huge losses to the bank,” said the ED. Setting the ball rolling last month, a division bench of Bombay HC comprising Justices S.C. Dharmadhikari and S.K. Shinde had ruled that there was prima facie credible evidence and directed the EOW to initiate proceedings invoking the relevant provisions of the law.

‘Supreme Court wrong over Parliament suspension’
B
ritish Prime Minister Boris Johnson faced enormous pressure as the parliament re-opened on Wednesday after the Supreme Court ruled his act to suspend the parliament for five weeks was unlawful. Johnson faced MPs in the House of Commons hours after the opening of the parliament as both the main opposition Labour Party and the Scottish Nationalist Party called for him to resign, Xinhua news agency reported. Johnson, for his part, accused opposition politicians of attempting to sabotage Britain’s exit from the European Union (EU). Politicians on the Conservative benches gave Johnson a lengthy and prolonged applause, cheering their support for the embattled prime minister. Johnson said when he prorogued parliament he was

The Crown Prince, however, reiterated that the incident happened without his knowledge, Anadolu news agency reported citing the broadcaster.

LONDON: British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has told MPs that the Supreme Court was ‘wrong to pronounce on a political question at a time of great national controversy’. The UK’s highest court ruled Johnson’s decision to suspend Parliament was unlawful - prompting opposition calls for him to resign, the BBC reported. The PM was forced to cut short his visit to the UN in New York to explain his legal defeat to the Commons. Jeremy Corbyn said he should “have done the honorable thing and resigned”. del al-Jubeir, Saudi Arabia’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, has said that all options, including a military response, were open after the September 14 drone attacks on the Kingdom’s two oil facilities, which it has blamed on Iran. “Everybody’s trying to avoid war and everybody’s trying to avoid esca-
lation. So we will look at all the options that are available to us. We will make a decision at the right time,” al-Jubeir, who is in New York for the UN General Assembly (UNGA), told the BBC on Wednesday. A US assessment claiming Iran was behind the strikes was backed up by the UK, France and Germany this week. But Tehran has denied any involvement.

Barack Obama as saying that the Pakistan army had no idea that bin Laden was living in Abbottabad. “So as far as I know the Pakistan army chief, ISI chief, had no idea about the Abbottabad. So if there was, it was probably at the lower levels.” Answering a question regarding former US defense secretary James Mattis’ remark that he considered Pakistan to be “the most dangerous” among all countries he had dealt with, Imran said: “I do not think James Mattis fully understands why Pakistan became radicalized.” Imran said Pakistan committed one of the biggest blunders by joining the US in its war on terrorism in the aftermath of the 9/11 attack.

rime Minister Narendra Modi met with his New Zealand counterpart Jacinda Ardern during which both countries strongly condemned and extended support to each other following the Pulwama and Christchurch terror attacks. During the meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) on Wednesday, the two leaders also discussed global and regional issues of mutual interest, including international terrorism and appreciated the convergence of views between the two nations in this regard, a statement by the Indian External Affairs Ministry said. Modi also thanked Ardern for her presence at the “Relevance of Gandhi in the Contemporary Times” to commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, held on the sidelines of UNGA. joint New Zealand-French initiative on Christchurch Call of Action, an initiative to combat terrorism and extremism online and secure the Internet that was formed after the Christchurch terror attack in which 51 people were killed in an attack on two mosques in March this year. Both leaders reviewed the state of
bilateral relations and discussed steps to intensify political, economic, defense, security and people to people relations. They recalled their earlier meeting in November 2017 in Manila and noted that following the visit of former Prime Minister of New Zealand to India in October 2016, new institutional mechanisms have been instituted, which
has substantially enhanced the bilateral relationship. Ardern informed Modi about their new strategic paper “India 2022 - Investing in the Relationship”, which is a continuation of the NZ Inc India Strategy. Ardern noted that the Indian diaspora and students in New Zealand was an important bridge between the two nations and contributing to bonds of friendship between the two countries. During the meeting, Modi also conveyed his condolences on the Christchurch terror attack. It was the first meeting between the two leaders since the Christchurch attack, Ministry spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said at a briefing later. There was also “some discussion on regional issues, in respect of counter terrorism”, the spokesperson added. The meeting between Modi and Andern comes a day after she met her Pakistan counterpart Imran Khan during which he raised the Kashmir issue.
Indian man sent to jail for bribing
SINGAPORE: A Singapore court on Monday sentenced an Indian national to eight weeks in jail for bribing a Changi Airport check-in worker so that the latter would under-report the weight of travellers’ bags on Tigerair flights. Gopal Krishna Raju, who was a manager in a food-processing firm, ran a side business in which gold was transported from Singapore to Chennai before the valuables were sold in India, The Straits Times reported. Raju had asked airport check-in worker Patel Hiteshkumar Chandubhai to under-report the weight of bags belonging to passengers who were transporting the gold on Gopal’s behalf. Patel was then rewarded for his help. In sentencing Gopal, District Judge John Ng noted that the offence had taken place over 10 months and stressed that it is important to protect Changi Airport’s reputation. UAE to deport Indian worker held for stealing mangoes DUBAI: A United Arab Emirates (UAE) court has ordered the deportation of an Indian airport worker who was held for stealing two mangoes from the baggage of a passenger last year, a media report said. The Court of First Instance on Monday ordered the 27-year-old Indian worker’s deportation after paying a 5,000 dirham fine, for stealing the mangoes worth about 6 dirham on August 11, 2017, the Khaleej Times reported. During interrogation and prosecution investigation, the accused recounted that he had been working
at Terminal 3 of the Dubai airport. His duties included loading travelers’ luggage onto the conveyer belt from the container and vice versa. He confessed that on August 11, 2017, he stole the mangoes from a fruit box that was to be shipped to India as he was thirsty and looking for water. In April 2018, the police summoned him and interrogated him about the incident. He was arrested and his place was searched. But no stolen items were found there. The accused has the right to appeal the verdict within 15 days.
hree men who defrauded NRI actress Isha Sharvani and many other Australian residents of crores of rupees by pretending to be tax officials have been arrested as Delhi Police’s Cyber Crime Unit busted their fake call centre here, police said on Thursday. The matter came to light when the actress, who currently lives in Perth, complained to the Delhi Police about being cheated. Investigations so far by the cyber crime officials have found that, the gang, comprising of Puneet Chadha, 34, Bhanuj Beri, 24, and Rishabh Khanna, 23, have purportedly cheated over 100 Australian residents of crores of rupees. DCP, Cyber Crime Unit, Anyesh Rai told IANS that the actress had told them, over the telephone, that a few days back, she had received a call from an Australian number seeming to be from capital Canberra. The caller, identifying himself as an Australian Income Tax officer, told her that an arrest warrant had been issued against her in a taxation matter and that if she did not deposit the penalty amount within

the stipulated time, she would be arrested. On hearing this, Isha got worried and sensing this, the caller pressed home his advantage and managed to secure her bank account details, he added. The DCP said that subsequently, Isha got a call from the number of her Australian accountant and was told that they had made an inadvertent error in her accounts and of this was not rectified fast, she was liable to be arrested. A worried Isha kept talking to them for nearly two and a half hours as she looked for a way out of her predicament. Now understanding that Isha was caught fast in the net,
the cheating gang managed to persuade her to transfer Australian $5,700 (approx Rs 3 lakh) penalty into an Indian bank account. To make sure that the actress did not get suspicious at being made to transfer the money into an Indian bank account, the gang members told her that the Australian authorities had opened an office in India to collect taxes and penalties and this was its account, the DCP said. But the gang was not yet done with her. Some days later, Isha got another call telling her that some money in her account was of suspicious nature and seemed to meant to support terrorist activities.

Facing crisis in Telangana, TDP may skip by-poll After making inroads in the Lok Sabha polls by winning four seats, the BJP is projecting itself as the alternative to the TRS IANS, HYDERABAD
T
he Telugu Desam Party (TDP), which stayed away from the Lok Sabha polls in Telangana, was unlikely to contest the October 21 by-election to Huzurnagar Assembly seat, party sources said. The party, which is facing existential crisis in Telangana, has left the decision to party national president N. Chandrababu Naidu. A section of TDP leaders feel the party should skip the by-election to save itself from embarrassment, others favor joining the fray to show it was still alive in the region. The TDP didn’t field candidates in the 17 Lok Sabha seats in 2019 polls. It was the first time since its formation in 1982 that the party
BRIEFS Water, power supply to Maradu flats cut KOCHI: Electricity and power supply to the unauthorized Maradu housing complex here was snapped in the wee hours of Thursday forcing irate residents to launch a protest. The residents refuse to leave the complex come what may. The Maradu complex houses 240 families in 343 flats constructed by four builders in violation of the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) norms. The Supreme Court had set a deadline of September 20 for the demolition of the flats.
Sachin Bansal is CRIDS CEO BENGALURU: Sachin Bansal who exited Flipkart with about $1 billion in pocket, has invested Rs 740 crore ($104 million) into Bengaluru-headquartered Chaitanya Rural Intermediation Development Services Private Limited (CRIDS), a non-banking financial company (NBFC). The former CEO and co-founder of Flipkart will take charge as CEO of the micro-finance company CRID, it said in a statement on Wednesday. CRIDS was formed in 2012 as an NBFC to serve the rural population of the country in their financial needs. It provides loans and organizes financial literacy campaigns in rural communities in states like Karnataka, Bihar and Jharkhand.

stayed away from polls in the region. Analysts say, the TDP, seen as Andhra party by many, is almost finished in Telangana as it lost almost the entire leadership to the
Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) since 2014. In recent months, some has joined the Congress and others switched to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). After making inroads in the Lok
Sabha polls by winning four seats, the BJP is projecting itself as the alternative to the TRS and there is hardly any political space left for the TDP in Telangana, say analysts. The TDP is also demoralized after losing power in Andhra Pradesh. Though Naidu recently held talks with few party leaders from Telangana, the revival prospects appear bleak. The TDP had contested the December 2018 Assembly elections in alliance with the Congress, the Communist Party of India (CPI) and the Telangana Jana Samithi (TJS). The four-party alliance, led by the Congress, was humiliated as it could win only 21 seats in 119-member Assembly. The TDP bagged just two seats and one of the MLAs subsequently crossed over to the TRS.
K’taka: Congress cries foul BENGALURU: Riding high on returning to power again, an upbeat BJP is betting on the 15 disqualified ‘rebels’ of the Congress and the JD-S winning in the October 21 Karnataka Assembly byelections, while the Congress is crying foul over the Election Commission (EC) saying that they can contest the polls. “As the rebels’ case against their disqualification is in the Supreme Court and the hearing is set to resume tomorrow (Wednesday), we do not want to comment or prejudge its outcome, as we are not party to it. “We wish them good luck. If they win the case and want to re-contest in the 15 Assembly by-polls on our party ticket, they are welcome. But it’s up to them to decide on their future,” BJP’s state unit spokesman G. Madhusudana told IANS here on Tuesday. The EC’s counsel Rakesh Dwivedi told the three-judge bench of the apex court on Monday that the Assembly Speaker cannot deprive the disqualified members from re-contesting and the by-polls should not be stayed. —IANS

According to a statement from Telangana Chief Minister’s Office, they decided to adopt giveand-take approach on common issues of both the states. Chandrashekhar Rao requested Reddy to train 4,000 police recruitees of Telangana in Andhra Pradesh as the Telangana state is recruiting 18,000 police personnel at one go. eavy rains continued to pound Hyderabad for the second straight day on Wednesday, with the city recording the highest September rainfall in over 100 years, officials said. Heavy rains pounded several parts of the city on Wednesday evening, bringing normal life to a grinding halt. Commuters were stranded in peak hour traffic as the thunderstorm resulted in inundation of the roads. Long traffic snarls were seen in
the Information Technology corridors of Hitec City and Gachibowli. Hundreds of techies returning from their offices were caught in the jam. The traffic police had a tough time in controlling the situation. The police have advised the employees of IT companies to delay their departure from offices and follow staggered timings in view of the traffic jams. ‘Howdy, Modi!’
‘Abki Baar Trump Sarkar’
Says Narendra Modi while using ‘Howdy, Modi!’ platform to give message on Article 370, attack Pak on terror IANS, NEW DELHI/HOUSTON
I
t was a masterful stroke in strategic thinking — getting a 50,000-strong crowd of roaring and cheering IndianAmericans to stand up and back the Indian Parliaments move to revoke special status for Kashmir, and again getting them to give a standing ovation to US President Donald Trump for his “strong determination” to fight terrorism, in a thinly-veiled reference to Pakistan. With one fell swoop, Prime Minister Narendra Modi not only brought live to the US audience, comprising not just President Trump but also a large gathering of elected US officials, including Governors, Senators and Representatives, from both the Democrats and Republicans, the strong backing that Article 370’s revocation enjoys among mainstream India and he enumerated the developmental reasons for his govern-
ment’s move, he also effectively targeted Islamabad over terrorism and its obsessive focus on Kashmir. Modi, a master orator, also spoke of “Abki bar Trump Sarkar” - pausing strategically after saying that to drive home its meaning, thereby giving Indian-Americans, not just at the ‘Howdy Modi’ event but across the US, the message to back President Trump for re-election. Indian-Americans number nearly four million, and President Trump is keen to get their votes. In his first speech at the event on Sunday in English while welcoming President Trump on the stage, Modi highlighted the close friendship between the two leaders and the countries. He was effusive in his praise for “my friend, a friend of India, a great American President Mr Donald Trump” and of how his presence at ‘Howdy Modi’ was “extraordinary and unprecedented”. Trump replied in kind, describing Modi as “America’s greatest, most devoted, and loyal friend”,
and backed his administration, saying the Prime Minister “is doing a truly excellent job in India and for all of the Indian people”. Trump, who is keen to “Make America Great Again” and is pushing for job creation and business, also mentioned the MoU between India’s Petronet LNG and US liquefied natural gas (LNG) developer Tellurian Inc inked a day ago one of the largest foreign investments in the US for shipping shale gas abroad. Petronet is to spend $2.5 billion for an 18 per cent equity stake in the $28 billion Driftwood LNG terminal, and negotiate the purchase of 5 million tonnes of gas per annum. Taking the stage after Trump, this time to speak in Hindi for which the US dignitaries had their earphones on for the simultaneous translation, Modi was careful to enunciate clearly the many developmental moves of his government, and gave the million/billion equivalent of the Indian monetary figures.
Narendra Modi with Donald Trump at ‘Howdy, Modi!’ event in Houston.
He elaborated on “fast-paced vikas” or development, and how his government had bid “farewell” to many factors detrimental to growth and development, like corruption, fake companies etc, He said his government was building a transparent ecosystem so that the benefits of development reaches every Indian. “And if any Indian is kept away from development it is not agreeable,” he said, before going to his
government’s move on Kashmir. “For 70 years a big challenge that India faced has been given farewell to,” and then asked the audience, “you know what I am referring to” — to loud cheers. He then asked the audience to give a standing ovation to the Indian Parliament for its move, and the 50,000 crowd stood up as one, applauding, as Trump and the American Congressmen watched.
Trump tries to reset optics for 2020 IANS, NEW YORK
W
ith an eye on next year’s elections, US President Donald Trump tried at the ‘Howdy Modi!’ rally to reset the optics for his campaign among immigrants — a group among whom he has fared badly because of the broad brush accusation of being anti-immigrant. Unlike his ‘Make America Great Again’ (MAGA) rallies for his re-election campaign where the audience is predominantly white, he was in the midst of about 50,000 brown people - a striking visual contrast - at Houston’s NRG stadium. And it was broadcast live nationally by some channels. His address was like his usual stump speeches proclaiming his tax cuts, low unemployment, strong economy and border security - except for the omission of
partisan attacks on the Democratic opponents and the addition of elements specific to India. Another huge difference was that Trump, who likes to be the centre of the universe, was not the main speaker at the rally for Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The New York Times said he was playing a “second fiddle” and The Washington Post “an unusual role of warm-up act”. It was also the biggest crowd he has addressed during his campaign, though short of the 70,000 he had said that would be there, a number beyond the stadium’s capacity. The optics and crowd size appeared to be his main motivations to take the unprecedented step of attending a large ethnic rally for a foreign leader. “The Prime Minister of India has asked me to make a speech and I will make a speech in a stadium loaded up with something
like 70,000 people or whatever the maximum is,” Trump said before leaving for the rally. And probably unprecedented was also the presence of a large number of Democrats among the about 60 elected officials, including Governors, Senators and Representatives, who were on the stage before him. For them too, the large crowd of Indians, many coming to Houston from their scattered constituencies across the nation was a draw. The rally was an opportunity for Trump to present himself as a supporter of legal immigrants, while opposing illegal immigration, a distinction that has been erased by the media and his political opponents to make him appear an anti-immigrant racist. “We are proud to have you as Americans,” Trump said, praising the Indian diaspora for accepting American values.

‘Howdy, Modi!’

H
e’s brought India together, we’ll call him the Father of India”, US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday, showering praise on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and adding that the two share great chemistry, at their meeting on the sidelines of the UNGA here. Trump said: “My personal chemistry with PM Modi is as good as it can get. “He is a great gentleman and great leader… I remember India before was very torn, a lot of dissension, a lot of fighting, and he brought it together, like a father would bring it together; and maybe he is the Father of India. “We’ll call him the Father of India, if it’s not so bad, but he brought things together, you don’t hear that (dissensions) anymore. I think he’s done a fantastic job. “And I think is how much I like the country of India and how much I like your PM, and there was tremendous spirit in that room too (NRG stadium during ‘Howdy, Modi!’), and they loved this gentleman to my right (pointing to Modi), they really do; the people went crazy. “That was like Elvis Presley, he was like an American version of Elvis, like an all American Elvis came back. It was quite something, and they really loved the PM, and it was a great thing,” Trump said. Earlier, backing India’s position on Pakistan-sponsored terror, Trump said that Modi would “take care” of the issue and that Modi had given the message on terrorism to Islamabad “loud and clear” from the ‘Howdy, Modi!’

stage, which was shared by the US President on Sunday. Taking questions from mediapersons ahead of their bilateral talks, Trump, when asked what message he had for Pakistan on being actively involved in training
militants, said: “Well, I mean, the message is not for me to give, it’s for Prime Minister Modi to give. “And I think he gave that loud and clear on the other day when we were together (in Houston for ‘Howdy, Modi!’). He gave a pretty
loud message. And I’m sure he’ll be able to handle the situation.” Trump was answering a query related to Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan telling a thinktank that the Pakistan Army and the ISI had trained the al Qaeda, and
reports that thousands of terrorists were reportedly ready to enter India. On the US saying it stood with India in the fight against Islamic radical terrorism, and what he thought about Imran Khan admitting that the ISI had trained the al Qaeda, Trump said that he hadn’t heard of that. But he added: “And I know this: Your Prime Minister will take care of it. So if there’s a problem, he’ll take care of it.” Trump went on to say that it would be great if both India and Pakistan can work out something on Kashmir. “We all want to see that. I’m sure we all want to see it.” Asked about his talks with Imran Khan on Monday, Trump said that it was a “very good meeting”. “It was a long meeting and we discussed a lot. And I think he’d like to see something happen that would be very fruitful, very peaceful. And I think that will happen, ultimately. “I really believe that these two great gentlemen (Modi and Imran Khan) will get together and work out something. “You know, you mentioned Pakistan, but Iran would have to be at the top of the list. Because if you look at terrorist states, that’s been the number one for a long time. “But I really believe that Prime Minister Modi and Prime Minister Khan, they get along -- they will get along when they get to know each other. And I think a lot of good things will come from that meeting,” Trump said. On ties with India and Modi, Trump said: “The relationship has never been better, I say, than it is right now, between the Prime Minister, myself, India, and the United States.”

P
rime Minister Narendra Modi told US President Donald Trump that India is not shying away from talks with Pakistan, but for that, it expects Islamabad to take some concrete steps, which has not happened. Modi also told Trump that though India has the second largest number of Muslims in the world, there has been “significantly lower level” of Indian Muslims participating in global terror activities or getting radicalized. Earlier, Trump backed India on Pakistan-sponsored terror, and said that Modi would “take care” of the issue, while answering questions by reporters before they sat down for the bilateral. “PM made clear that we are not shying away from talks with Pakistan, but for that to happen we expect some concrete steps to happen and we do not find any effort

by Pakistan in taking those steps,” said Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale, briefing reporters later. Modi and Trump had a “long
discussion on terrorism”. Modi explained in some detail the challenges India has faced on account of terrorism, especially in
Jammu and Kashmir. in the last 30 years. “The PM underscored that 42,000 lives have been lost to terror attacks in the last 30 years, and that it is incumbent on the international community to join together to fight the scourge. The PM also mentioned that globally from a number of developed countries, a significant number of foreign fighters, have participated in terror activities globally. “He pointed out that though India has the largest or probably second largest population of citizens of Muslim faith there has been significantly lower level of participation, and a lower level of radicalization than in other parts of the world, and this is an important fact that should be recognised by the international community,” he said, adding that Trump “acknowledged and took note of the fact”. On Pakistan, Modi conveyed that India has never shied away
from talking to Islamabad. However, India expects the “overtures that PM made over the years and ought to have been reciprocated have never been reciprocated”, he said, mentioning Modi’s visit to Lahore in December 2015 “with minimum security”. The terror attack on the Pathankot air base followed immediately, and the perpetrators have not been brought to justice, said Gokhale. He said that both Modi and Trump felt the two sides must come together to fight terrorism. “The focus of discussions this time was on the impact of terrorism and the fact that it needs to be understood where the origin of that is, and how we tackle it jointly,” he added. On Trump’s offer of mediation, Gokhale said that India’s position on the issue is fairly clear that “if there are issues to be discussed with Pakistan, it will be discussed bilaterally”.

Kashmir on Trump’s mind The US president can’t seem to let go of desire to arbitrate on Kashmir
Fulfil promises to better lives of Kashmiris: Trump to Modi NEW YORK: Even as he backed India’s position on Pakistan-sponsored terror, US President Donald Trump on Tuesday “encouraged” Prime Minister Narendra Modi to improve relations with Islamabad and also “fulfil his promises” to better the lives of the Kashmiri people. According to a readout of the bilateral meeting between Trump and Modi, the two leaders “discussed progress on different aspects of their strategic partnership and upcoming opportunities to ensure it remains strong.” “The President reaffirmed the importance of greatly increasing trade between the US and India, and high-

S President Donald Trump can’t seem to let go of his desire to arbitrate the Kashmir dispute and he has circled back to it announcing that he made the offer to Prime Ministers Narendra Modi of India and Imran Khan of Pakistan during their meetings this week. “We talked about Kashmir,” he said at a news conference here on Wednesday. He said, “And whatever help I can be, I said I offered,
whether it’s arbitration or mediation, or whatever it has to be, I’ll do whatever I can. Because they’re at very serious odds right now, and hopefully that’ll get better.” At the same time, he left it to the two leaders to find a way of dealing with the situation. He said, “You look at the two gentlemen heading those two countries e two good friends of mine e I said, ‘Fellas, work it out. Just work it out.’ Those are two nuclear countries. They’ve got to work it out.” Yet, he cannot seem to let go off
the idea of getting a role for himself with an eye on the Nobel Prize — which he also said he would not get whatever he did — even though he said it won’t be possible if both sides did not agree to it. The latest statement caps four days of Trump going back and forth on Kashmir as he met Modi first on Sunday in Houston, then Khan on Monday and Modi again on Wednesday. At the Howdy Modi! rally in Houston, he said, “We are committed to protecting innocent civilians
from the threat of radical Islamic terrorism.” He showered Modi with several superlatives and sat through his speech in which he lashed out at Islamabad for it involvement with terrorism. But on Monay, just before meeting Khan he said “I heard a very aggressive statement yesterday from India” and that he hadn’t expected it. He said that “India may come” around to him arbitrating on Kashmir. On Tuesday, Trump said it was for Modi to give the anti-terrorism message to Pakistan and that the two South Asian leaders will work things out. ndia and the US are very close to concluding a trade deal, and a larger deal is set to be finalized in some time, US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday, as teams from both sides were engaged in negotiating a limited trade package. Answering queries from reporters ahead of a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Trump, asked if a trade deal was in the offing, said: “Well, I think very soon. “We’re doing very well. And Bob Lighthizer (United States Trade Representative) who’s right here, was negotiating with India and their very capable representa-
tives. And I think very soon we’ll have a trade deal. “We’ll have the larger deal down the road a little bit, but we will have a trade deal very soon,” he said. His statement comes as India’s Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal was in New York City to hold talks with Lighthizer and team on Tuesday. Earlier, Trump said that he and Modi “have many things to discuss. One of them, and perhaps in our case, one of the biggest ones is trade. We do a lot of trade together and we’re working on that.” PM Modi, in his remarks, said that “As far as trade is concerned, I’m very happy that the day before yesterday, in Houston, in my presence there was an agreement signed
by the Indian company, Petronet, for an amount of $2.5 billion, which is the amount of investment that the Indian company is going to do in the energy sector. “And this will mean that in the years to come, in the decades to come, this will result in trade of an amount of $60 billion and create 50,000 jobs, which I think is a very big initiative taken by India.” Trump has complained of high tariffs imposed by India on US products, including a 50 per cent tariff on Harley-Davidson motorcycles. In 2018-19, India’s exports to the US stood at $52.4 billion, while imports were $35.5 billion. The trade deficit has dropped from $21.3 billion in 2017-18 to $16.9 billion in 2018-19.
lighted the need for resolving barriers to free, fair, and reciprocal trade, which includes improving US companies’ market access in India. “The President noted good progress on defense and security cooperation. “Additionally, the President encouraged Prime Minister Modi to improve relations with Pakistan and fulfil his promise to better the lives of the Kashmiri people. “Finally, both leaders expressed concerns about the situation in Afghanistan and shared ideas about how to work together to promote security and prosperity in the country,” the readout said. —IANS
fulfill his promise to better the lives of the Kashmiri people.” But all of this is a far cry from Trump’s claim in July as he was meeting Khan that Modi had asked him to arbitrate or mediate on Kashmir. India denied that any such request was made and US officials concurred saying that it was a bilateral matter. However, the bottom line remains that Trump has through the twists and turns accepted that it is a bilateral matter as India has maintained and that his role is out unless New Delhi agrees e which it won’t. After showering high praise on Modi, going to the absurd length of calling him “Father of India”, it was down to the colloquial “Fella” at his press conference. MODI RECEIVES GLOBAL GOALKEEPER AWARD
The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation honors the prime minister for the Swachh Bharat mission IANS, NEW YORK
P
rime Minister Narendra Modi has been conferred the Global Goalkeeper Award by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for the Swachh Bharat mission. The PM said the honor bestowed on him was for the millions of Indians who participated in the mission. He said receiving the award on Mahatma Gandhi’s 150th anniversary is especially significant for him, for it shows people’s power - of the determination of 1.3 billion people to achieve any goal. Modi said that when he first talked about the Clean India campaign five years ago, there were “different reactions”, but “if you are committed to your goal then these are of no importance”. “What is important is the united efforts to make India clean and the development of a mindset in 1.3 billion Indians, and every single effort that people make for this effort. I therefore dedicate this award to those who made cleanliness the highest priority in their daily lives,” he said. He said though the Swachh Bharat mission was started by his
government, the people took charge of it. “I think of the woman who sold her sheep to build a toilet, of the retired man who donated his pension for a toilet, or the lady who sold her mangalsutra to build a toilet. Such a campaign has been unheard of in recent times,” the PM said. When he took over in 2014, less than 40 per cent homes had toilets in the country, and now it is close to 100 percent. He said the success of the Clean India mission has benefited women the most, as in rural areas women had to wait for it to get dark to venture to the fields to relieve themselves. “For mothers and sisters, not having a toilet at home is the biggest difficulty, it also goes against their selfrespect,” the PM said. He said lack of toilets in schools would force girls to give up their studies and sit at home. He said the Clean India Mission has also helped save thousands of lives, and cited a WHO report that said building toilets in homes helped save 300,000 lives. He cited a UNICEF study that said that every family with a toilet will be able to save Rs 50,000 a year, while
a Bill and Melinda Gates report said that increase in sanitation has improved the BMI of women. “I recall that Mahatma Gandhi said he believes that cleanliness is more important that independence. I am very happy that the dream of Mahatma Gandhi of cleanliness is going to become a reality.” He said the main objective of the UN is to make peoples’ lives better and the Clean India Campaign plays an important role in achieving the UN goal. He said that the construction of so many toilets had also generated employment opportunities for poor people in rural areas. “Our government has tried to change governance to cooperative federalism in the way different states have taken part in the campaign, through creating awareness, constructing toilets, through training. The states were given full assistance to fulfil the resolution,” he said.

‘Gandhi extended meaning of democracy to independence’ Gandhi park, peace garden inaugurated
ARUL LOUIS, UNITED NATIONS
P
rime Minister Narendra Modi has said that Mahatma Gandhi extended the meaning of democracy beyond elections to people power that makes citizens free from dependence on governments. Modi made the remarks on Tuesday while hosting the “Leadership Matters: Relevance of Mahatma Gandhi in the Contemporary World” event at the UN headquarters here to commemorate Gandhi’s 150th birth anniversary. In his address, Modi said that democracy has been limited to people electing governments and the governments doing what the people want. But Gandhi showed people the path of having true independence through a social system not dependent on governments, he said. At the meeting, leaders spoke about Gandhi’s influence on them and their countries.

South Korea’s President Moon Jae-in said that Gandhi’s ideas were an inspiration for working for peace on the Korean Peninsula with North Korea. While the Koreans were having their own non-violent independence struggle against the Japanese, they came to know of Gandhi’s campaign of boycotting British goods and they started a similar campaign. Gandhi wrote in support of the Korean freedom-fighters imprisoned by the Japanese, Moon said. Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said that Singapore wanted to become independent in 1965 inspired by Gandhi’s ideals of equality of all races and religions. Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said that her father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman took his inspiration for freedom from Gandhi.

World T20: Eye on youngsters The No. 4 slot in the limited-overs batting line-up is something that has haunted the team even in the 50-over World Cup

A
semi-final exit in the 50over World Cup might still be hurting the Men in Blue, but all that is in the past now as Virat Kohli and boys prepare for the 2020 World T20 that will be played in Australia. The mantra for the Indian team is very clear as they want to use this season of games to try youngsters and prepare for the challenge that awaits them Down Under. While the Indian team wears a quality look in the shortest format of the game, the three main areas of concern are the No.4 slot in the batting line-up, the wicket-keeper’s position with Rishabh Pant failing to provide consistency with the bat and the debate whether the team needs genuine spinners or bowlers who can also bat a bit. The No. 4 slot in the limitedovers batting line-up is something that has haunted the team even in the 50-over World Cup. In fact, bat-

While chief selector M.S.K. Prasad said that Shankar was the person for the No.4 slot, the team management started with K.L. Rahul before injury to opener Shikhar Dhawan saw Rahul open and Shankar bat at 4. After Shankar’s injury, it was Pant who
batted at No.4. The Indians can’t make the same mistake going into the WT20 and new batting coach Vikram Rathour must try as many options as he wants now in order to get the right guy to sit on the plane to Australia. Up next is the new debate in Indi-
