Indian-Americans reportedly raised over USD 3.3 million in a single night for Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden. HiIndia Newsdesk
Around USD 2 million was written in by “big donors” and USD 1.3 million came in from smaller donors, said Ramesh Kapur, a member of the Biden-Harris National Finance Committee 2020, who participated in the fundraiser, adding he believed this was a record amount raised by the community at any single-night fundraiser. Biden acknowledged that he knew and understood this was because of Kamala Harris, his Indian-American nominee for vice president, Kapur said. The Indian-origin donors also allegedly pressed his campaign to moderate its positions on Kashmir and the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, as also to add an agenda for the Hindu community on its web platform.

The former vice-president was introduced to over 200 attendees at the virtual fundraiser by Vivek Murthy, the former US surgeon general, who is among those the community is pushing for a cabinet position in a possible Biden administration. Murthy recalled how Biden had helped with his rocky confirmation hearing process in the Republican-controlled US Senate. Some Indian Americans who wanted to “do more than just write cheques” also took the opportunity to press the former vice-president on his campaign’s position on Kashmir, CAA and the “lack of equal treatment” of Hindus, who don’t have a dedicated section on the campaign platform’s section titled “Joe’s Vision”.

"We were innocent but our visas were refused or revoked and the government gave us no way to defend ourselves. Our futures were destroyed and we were left to fight a years-long legal battle costing each of us tens of thousands of pounds," reads the letter. "We write to you because it is within your power to right this wrong, to put an end to our detention, deportation and humiliation. Allow us to prove our innocence by establishing a free and transparent scheme - independent of the Home Office - through which we can get our cases to be reviewed and clear our names," the letter adds. "The coronavirus pandemic has made our situation even worse. Our support networks have collapsed, the charities we rely on have been closed, our friends and families are unable to help as they are struggling themselves. We are terrified of catching the virus and being hospitalised, or dying with a black mark still against our names. This is not the future we wanted or worked for," the students wrote.
Former Amazon executive charged with insider trading in US HiIndia Newsdesk San Francisco– The US Securities and Exchange Commission has charged a former finance manager at Amazon and two family members with insider trading in advance of Amazon earnings announcements between January 2016 and July 2018. The family reaped illicit profits of approximately $1.4 million from their unlawful trading in Amazon securities, the SEC said in its complaint on Monday. According to the SEC’s complaint, Laksha Bohra worked as a senior manager in Amazon’s tax department, where she prepared and reviewed calculations used to finalise numbers included in Amazon’s quarterly and annual earnings that were filed with the SEC. Beginning in January 2016 and continuing through July 2018, Laksha Bohra allegedly acquired, and tipped her husband Viky Bohra with highly confidential information about Amazon’s financial performance. The complaint alleges that Viky Bohra and his father, Gotham Bohra, traded on this confidential information in 11 separate accounts maintained by different members of the Bohra family.

US House passes Democratic COVID-19 US judge blocks Trump’s H-1B visa ban aid plan after bipartisan deal proves elusive Congress and the White House approved more than $3 trillion worth of coronavirus relief measures earlier this year, but Mnuchin, as well as members of Congress from both parties, have argued more stimulus is needed. HiIndia Newsdesk The U.S. House of Representatives on Thursday approved a $2.2 trillion Democratic plan to provide more economic relief from the coronavirus pandemic, as a bipartisan deal continued to elude House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and the White House. Objections from top Republicans are likely to doom the House Democrats’ plan in the Senate. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has called the $2.2 trillion price tag “outlandish,” although Democrats have reduced the cost of their proposal by over a trillion dollars since May. The House vote was 214207. No Republican voted for the Democratic plan, although 18 Democrats voted no, many of them moderates from swing districts who have been urging Pelosi to bring a bipartisan proposal to the House floor. “Today’s package is another partisan exercise that will never become law,” Representative Abigail Spanberger, one of the Democrats who voted no, said. Republican President Donald Trump’s negotiating team has suggested a $1.6 trillion response, and the White House on Thursday dismissed Democrats’ $2.2 trillion plan as not serious.
HiIndia Newsdesk A federal judge has blocked the enforcement of the H-1B visa ban issued by President Donald Trump in June this year, saying the president exceeded his constitutional authority. The order was issued on Thursday by District Judge Jeffrey White of Northern District of California. The lawsuit against the Department of Commerce and Department of Homeland Security was filed by companies represented by National Association of Manufacturers, US Chamber of Commerce, National Retail Federation and TechNet. The ruling places an immediate hold on a series of visa restrictions that prevent manufacturers from filling crucial, hard-to-fill jobs to support economic recovery, growth and innovation when most needed, the National Association of manufacturers said.
Trump in quarantine as top aide Hope Hicks tests positive for coronavirus HiIndia Newsdesk US President Donald Trump has said he and the US first lady are in quarantine after one of his closest aides tested positive for coronavirus. He tweeted that both he and Melania Trump were now awaiting their own test results after Hope Hicks was infected. The 31-year-old adviser to the president is the closest aide to Mr Trump to test positive so far. She travelled with him on Air Force One to a TV debate in Ohio earlier this week. Ms Hicks was pictured getting off the presidential jet on Tuesday in Cleveland without a mask. She was in even closer proximity to him aboard the presidential helicopter Marine One on Wednesday when the president held a rally in Minnesota.
US House pays tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on his 151 birth anniversary HiIndia Newsdesk
Scores of US House of Representatives on Thursday (local time) paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on his 151st birth anniversary. On the eve of Gandhi Jayanti, Congressman Rohit Khanna posted a message saying: “Gandhi taught us that the best fight for justice was a fight wage with principles of non-violence.” “Mahatma Gandhi changed the course of human history. So many people were inspired by his actions,” said Congressman Tom Suozzi in a tribute to Gandhi. Congressman TJ Coxsa and Mike Fitzpatrick also offered their tributes to Gandhi. While Coxsa encouraged people to embrace their differences to honour his legacy, Fitzpatrick endorsed Gandhi’s idea of selfless service.
Donald Trump Biggest Driver Of Over 6 % Indian-Americans below COVID-19 Misinformation: Study living poverty line: Report HiIndia Newsdesk
Washington, United States: US President Donald Trump has been the world's biggest driver of Covid-19 misinformation during the pandemic, a study from Cornell University said Thursday. A team from the Cornell Alliance for Science evaluated 38 million articles published by English-language, traditional media worldwide between January 1 and May 26 of this year. The database they used aggregates coverage from countries such as the United States, Britain, India, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and other African and Asian nations. They identified 522,472 news articles that reproduced or amplified misinformation related to the coronavirus pandemic, or what the World Health Organization has called the "infodemic." These were categorized into 11 main sub-topics, ranging from conspiracy theories to attacks on top scientist Anthony Fauci to the idea that the virus is a bioweapon unleashed by China. But the most popular topic by far was what the study authors termed "miracle cures," which appeared in 295,351 articles -- more than the other 10 topics combined. The authors found that comments by President Trump drove major spikes in the "miracle cures" topic, led by his April 24 press briefing where he mused on the possibility of using disinfectants inside the body to cure the coronavirus. Similar spikes were seen when he promoted unproven treatments like hydroxychloroquine. "We conclude therefore that the president of the United States was likely the largest driver of the COVID-19 misinformation 'infodemic,'" the team wrote. Sara Evanega, who led the study and is director of the Cornell Alliance for Science, said: "If people are misled by unscientific and unsubstantiated claims about the disease, they may be less likely to observe official guidance and thus risk spreading the virus."
HiIndia Newsdesk An estimated 6.5 per cent of the 4.2 million IndianAmericans are living below the poverty line and the Covid-19 pandemic is likely to increase the poverty among members of the community, according to a latest research. Results of the research “A Study of Poverty in the Indian American Population,” conducted by Devesh Kapur and Jashan Bajwaat of Johns Hopkins’ Paul Nitze School of Advanced International Studies, were released during the Indiaspora Philanthropy Summit 2020 on Thursday. The incident of poverty is greater among Bengali and Punjabi speaking Indian Americans, Kapoor said. About one-third are not in the labour force and about a fifth of them are not American citizens, Kapoor said. “With this report, we wanted to draw attention to the plight of the most underprivileged Indian Americans,” said MR Rangaswami, founder of Indiaspora. “With COVID-19 wrecking health and economic havoc, this is an appropriate moment to raise awareness and discuss the issue of poverty that exists in our otherwise affluent community. We hope that the report will lead to an increased focus on this topic, followed by targeted measures to make a positive difference,” Rangaswami said.

India’s Covid toll set to cross 1 lakh
India’s death toll from the new coronavirus disease is set to surpass 100,000 this week if daily mortality trends observed through September persist despite a 50 per cent fall in the country’s case fatality rate over the past three months. The number of Covid-19 deaths climbed to 95,542 on Monday with health authorities recording 1,039 deaths over the previous 24 hours. The daily nationwide mortality figure has always been greater than 1,000 through September after 819 deaths on August 31. The Union health ministry said on Monday that 10 states accounted for 84 per cent of the deaths recorded over the previous 24 hours with Maharashtra alone making up 360 (36 per cent) of the deaths. The others are Tamil Nadu (80), Karnataka (79), Uttar Pradesh (77), Bengal (60), Punjab (50), Andhra Pradesh (45), Delhi (42), Chhattisgarh (31), and Madhya Pradesh (26). Health experts expect the country’s Covid-19 deaths to exceed 100,000 by Friday this week if the September trend persists. Although the average numbers of daily new infections have shown a declining trend since mid-September, experts say any impact on daily deaths will show up after a lag period.

A disturbing sequence of events captured in overnight visuals shows the family arguing with cops, female relatives throwing themselves on the hood of the ambulance carrying the body and a mother weeping helplessly as cops insist on taking her daughter straight to cremation, without allowing a last look.

Farm bills: Congress “No Aspect Ruled Out As Of Date”: appeals to all parties CBI On Sushant Singh Rajput Case ‘The bills brought by the Narendra Modi government will help the corporate and big traders while completely destroying the farmers’
The Congress on Sunday appealed to all the non-BJP parties to rise above partisan considerations and political alignments to protect the interest of farmers. Sunil Jakhar and Kumari Selja, Congress chiefs of Punjab and Haryana, the two most affected states, said at a news conference: “It is not the time for politics. Every political party must think about the future of farmers. They should decide whether they stand by the farmers or the corporates. “The bills brought by the Narendra Modi
government will help the corporate and big traders while completely destroying the farmers.” “The Akali Dal which supported the bills finally bowed to the pressure mounted by the farmers. They walked out of the NDA as the farmers were not allowing their leaders to enter villages. The JJP of Dushyant Chautala which has propped up a minority BJP government in Haryana should also respond to the demands of the farmers and withdraw. They will not be forgiven otherwise,” they said.
What is left of NDA after Akali Dal, Shiv Sena exit: Saamana
HiIndia Newsdesk With the Shiromani Akali Dal walking out of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) over farm bills, the Shiv Sena on Monday wondered if the BJP-led alliance really exists and asked who are in the coalition now. An editorial in Sena mouthpiece ‘Saamana’ said it was surprising that NDA’s “last pillar” Shiromani Akali Dal was not stopped from severing ties with the alliance. The editorial said, “When the Badals left, no effort was made to stop them. Earlier, the Shiv Sena also left NDA. With these two parties out, what is left of the NDA? Those who are still there, do they have anything to do with Hindutva?” “Punjab and Maharashtra represent manliness and Akali Dal and Shiv Sena are the faces of that manliness,” it said. The NDA was formed to give a strong alliance against the Congress at the national level. The alliance saw many ups and downs over the years and several other parties quit it as per their convenience,” it said. The countrys politics is being pushed towards a oneparty system, but the BJP has to face elections in several states by forging alliances with other parties, the Sena said. The Shiv Sena said its government with the NCP and Congress in Maharashtra is doing a good job, and added it will complete its five-year term.
A lawyer representing Sushant Singh Rajput’s family had claimed the actor had been strangled and accused the CBI of “delaying” converting the death case into murder.
HiIndia Newsdesk New Delhi: Days after the lawyer representing Sushant Singh Rajput’s family claimed the actor had been strangled and accused the CBI of “delaying” what he believed should be a murder probe, the investigating agency has said that “no aspect has been ruled out”. “The Central Bureau of Investigation is conducting a professional investigation related to the death of Sushant Singh Rajput in which all aspects are being looked at and no aspect has been ruled out as of date. The

investigation is continuing,” the agency said in its statement on Monday. Last week, Sushant Singh Rajput’s family’s lawyer Vikas Singh, had tweeted: “Getting frustrated by the delay in CBI taking a decision to convert abetment to suicide to Murder of SSR. The Doctor who is part of AIIMS team had told me long back that the photos sent by me indicated 200% that it’s death by strangulation and not suicide. (Sic)” The lawyer had claimed that an AIIMS doctor on the panel investigating Sushant Singh Rajput’s autopsy report had shared these findings with him. Mr Singh also alleged that the pace of the CBI probe had “suddenly slowed down” and all attention had been diverted to a drugsrelated probe with the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) conducting a “fashion parade” of Bollywood stars.

As the court told them to play the recording of the Sena leader to prove the claim, Sanjay Raut’s lawyer Pradeep Thorat raised an objection: “The audio does not have the name of the petitioner.” The court, which was holding the hearing virtually, replied saying that it was Mr Raut’s “stand that you (in the audio)” did not abuse the petitioner (Kangana Ranaut).

Rs 7,800 crore border network system cleared by govt
Speaking on September 26, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that she is open to “the need for further stimulus” and its timing. That may not be much of an assurance given the growing sense of disquiet in expert bodies including the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council, the Niti Aayog and the Chief Economic Advisor’s office. Several policy-influencers in these bodies are befuddled at the Central government’s aversion to spend more now despite their unanimous
view that a fiscal stimulus — sooner than later — will place India better to take advantage of the major reforms being pushed in agriculture and labour. In at least four meetings that Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired over 10 days between the end of June and early July, The Indian Express has learnt, members of his EAC, Niti Aayog and the CEA’s office, made presentations with participation from senior officials in the PM’s office, the Finance Ministry and the Commerce Ministry.
On Gandhi Jayanti, Rahul Gandhi quotes the Mahatma to say he won’t bow down before injustice Congress president Sonia Gandhi also spoke in her message on Gandhi Jayanti about the “injustice” meted out to farmers and labourers, in an indication that her party will continue to protests against the Centre.
HiIndia Newsdesk The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) has approved the creation of a secure communication system for the army at a cost of Rs 7,800 crore, a significant move that will enhance network coverage in forward areas including the contested Line of Actual Control (LAC) and provide a major boost to the operational preparedness of the army “especially keeping in view the current operational situation at the LAC,” the defence ministry said on Thursday. Separately, the ministry inked a Rs 409-crore contract with a private company for the first time to supply a million hand grenades to the army to replace a World War-II vintage design currently in use, in what will provide a boost to the Make in India initiative, officials said. The CCS cleared the long-pending proposal for establishing the Army Static Switched Communication Network (ASCON) Phase IV, with the project to be implemented by Indian Telephone Industries Limited --- a public sector firm under the department of telecommunication, ministry of communications --- under a Rs 7,796-crore contract signed on Thursday. The communication network will be functional in three years. “The project will provide better survivability, responsiveness and high bandwidth in any operational scenario and enhance the communication coverage of network closer to the International Border, Line of Control and Line of Actual Control,” the defence ministry said in a statement.
HiIndia Newsdesk Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday shared Mahatma Gandhi’s thoughts on the prevalence of truth and principle of never bowing down before injustice on the 151st birth anniversary of the Father of the Nation. Gandhi’s tribute came a day after he was arrested along with Priyanka Gandhi, his sister and party general secretary, by the police in Uttar Pradesh while trying to reach Hathras, where a woman was allegedly gang-raped and murdered. “I will not fear anyone in the world ... I will not bow down before anyone’s injustice, I will win the untruth with the truth and I can bear all the sufferings while opposing the untruth,” the Congress leader tweeted in Hindi.

Indian-Americans reportedly raised over USD 3.3 million in a single night for Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden. HiIndia Newsdesk Around USD 2 million was written in by “big donors” and USD 1.3 million came in from smaller donors, said Ramesh Kapur, a member of the Biden-Harris National Finance Committee 2020, who participated in the fundraiser, adding he believed this was a record amount raised by the community at any single-night fundraiser.
Indian students appeal to PM Boris Johnson for justice in row over English language test HiIndia Newsdesk Many Indian students are among over 200 overseas student signatories of a letter sent to United Kingdom Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Thursday. The letter is an appeal from these students,
We had a great - if necessarily small! - demo at Westminster this morning after sending the letter to @BorisJohnson, signed by 200+ of the students whose lives were devastated 6 years ago. Thanks to @stephenctimms for joining us.#MyFutureBack #migrantvoices pic.twitter. com/ZKJnSOq9Cv — Migrant Voice (@MigrantVoiceUK) September 24, 2020 asking for justice after being accused of cheating in a compulsory English language test six years ago. The row relates to the Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC), which is a compulsory requirement for certain student visas. The scandal is reported to have impacted around 34,000 international students.

Rio carnival called EU warns Turkey of sanctions over off for first time 'provocations' in Mediterranean Raucous celebrations took over city streets despite the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic, during both World Wars and through Brazil’s military dictatorship
The EU says it could impose sanctions on Turkey over "provocations and pressures" in a row with Greece over energy resources and maritime borders.
What has the EU said?
HiIndia Newsdesk For more than a century, Rio de Janeiro’s carnival has been an irrepressible force, unstoppable by wars, disease, labour strikes or political repression. Raucous celebrations took over city streets despite the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic, during both World Wars and through Brazil’s military dictatorship. Glitter flew, hips swayed and drummers pounded in 2008, despite a dengue outbreak that sickened more than 200,000 in the state. Rio is reeling. “I want this moment to come, this moment when we will celebrate life that defeats death, when we will reunite, gather,” said Leandro Vieira, the artistic director of Estação Primeira de Mangueira, one of Rio’s most traditional samba groups. “But this moment is not possible yet.”
HiIndia Newsdesk European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called on Ankara to "abstain from unilateral actions" in the eastern Mediterranean. She spoke early on Friday during a meeting of EU leaders in Brussels. Earlier, Turkey and Greece set up a military hotline to try to reduce the risk of clashes in the region. Tensions rose earlier this year when Turkey sent a ship into a disputed area to search for potentially rich oil and gas deposits. Despite the strains, Turkey remains an important partner for the EU. Turkey hosts millions of migrants and struck a deal with the EU that limited the numbers arriving in Greece. Greece and Turkey are both Nato members, but have a history of border disputes and competing claims over maritime rights.

Google to pay $1 billion for news
Coronavirus: Is the rate of growth in Africa slowing down?
The World Health Organization (WHO) has said the Covid-19 outbreak in Africa may have passed its peak, but warns governments not to be complacent as countries relax their restrictions. The number of new daily confirmed cases overall has been dropping for about two months now, although some countries are still seeing a rise in cases.
Berlin shame stalls new airport party
HiIndia Newsdesk
Alphabet’s Google plans to pay $1 billion to publishers globally for their news over the next three years, its CEO said on Thursday, a step that could help it win over a powerful group amid heightened regulatory scrutiny worldwide. News publishers have long fought the world’s most popular Internet search engine for compensation for using their content, with European media groups leading the charge. CEO Sundar Pichai said the new product called Google News Showcase will launch first in Germany, where it has signed up German newspapers including Der Spiegel, Stern, Die Zeit, and in Brazil with Folha de S.Paulo, Band and Infobae. It will be rolled out in Belgium, India, the Netherlands and other countries. About 200 publishers in Argentina, Australia, Britain, Brazil, Canada and Germany have signed up to the product. “This financial commitment — our biggest to date — will pay publishers to create and curate high-quality content for a different kind of online news experience,” Pichai said in a blog post.
HiIndia Newsdesk Berlin will not hold a party when it opens its new airport on October 31 because it is so embarrassed about how long it took to build, but it will mark the closure of the Tegel airport it replaces, the boss of the German capital's airports said on Tuesday.” There is no big party. We are just going to open,” Engelbert Luetke-Daldrup told a news conference. ”We German engineers were ashamed,” he said, adding that the delays had made Berlin, and Germany, a“laughing stock”, while the fact that costs had spiralled to 6 billion euros ($7 billion) from an original 2.7 billion was also not acceptable.
Mrs von der Leyen told reporters that the EU wanted "a positive and constructive relationship with Turkey and this would be also be very much in Ankara's interest". "But it will only work if the provocations and pressures stop," she said. "We therefore expect that Turkey from now on abstains from unilateral actions. In case of such renewed actions by Ankara the EU will use all its instruments and options available. We have a toolbox that we can apply immediately." After their late-night meeting, EU members agreed to review Turkey's behaviour in December and impose sanctions if "provocations" had not stopped. Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz, posting on Twitter after the meeting, said: "The EU issues a clear threat of sanctions against Turkey should it continue to violate international law." European Council President Charles Michel said the EU was offering Turkey closer relations on trade and other areas but holding out the threat of sanctions if tensions in the Mediterranean did not de-escalate.
NASA tests new $23 million titanium space toilet
Photo provided by NASA, astronaut Kate Rubins, center, and support personnel review the Universal Waste Management System, a low-gravity space toilet, in Houston
HiIndia Newsdesk NASA’s first new space potty in decades — a $23 million titanium toilet better suited for women — is getting a not-so-dry run at the International Space Station before eventually flying to the moon. It’s packed inside a cargo ship that should have blasted off late Thursday from Wallops Island, Virginia. But the launch was halted with just two minutes remaining in the countdown. Barely 100 pounds (45 kilograms) and just 28 inches (71 centimeters) tall, it’s roughly half as big as the two Russian-built toilets at the space station. It’s more camper-size to fit into the NASA Orion capsules that will carry astronauts to the moon in a few years. Station residents will test it out for a few months. If the shakedown goes well, the toilet will be open for regular business. With SpaceX now launching astronauts to the space station and Boeing less than a year from sending up its first crew, more toilets are needed. The new one will be in its own stall alongside the old one on the U.S. side of the outpost. The old toilets cater more toward men. To better accommodate women, NASA tilted the seat on the new toilet and made it taller.

ionel Messi wants to put his dispute with Barcelona behind him and called for the club and its fans to unite. In only his second interview since unsuccessfully pushing for a transfer in the offseason, Messi said Barcelona will be stronger if everyone works together to help the club succeed. “After so many disagreements, I would like to put an end to it all,” he told the daily Sport. “We must unite as Barcelona fans and believe that the best is yet to come.” In an interview that will be published in its entirety on Wednesday, Messi said that the only way for the club to reach its goals is to keep “united and rowing in the same direction.” Messi told Barcelona he wanted to leave after the team’s 8-2 loss to Bayern Munich in the quarterfinals of the Champions League in August, but he ended up staying to avoid a legal battle with the “club of my life.” Messi has continued to criticize club officials since deciding to stay. He has said that he did not like the direction that the club was heading. “I’ll take responsibility for my mistakes,” he said. “It they happened, it was with the intention of making Barcelona better and stronger.”Messi said he wanted to send a “message” to club members and fans, saying that “if at any time I upset some of them for something I did or said, they shouldn’t doubt that it was always thinking about the best for the club.”
No One Can Play Like MS Dhoni : Sanju Samson
HiIndia Newsdesk Serena Williams withdrew from the French Open with an Achilles tendon injury on Wednesday shortly before she was supposed to face Tsvetana Pironkova in the second
round on Wednesday. The 39-yearold American, a three-time former champion at Roland Garros, was striving to claim a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam title. “Struggling to walk,” Williams told a news conference. “I felt like I needed to walk with a limp.” Williams had suffered the problem during her semi-final loss to Victoria Azarenka in the U.S. Open and said ahead of her Roland Garros campaign that she was not at 100% physically but had recovered sufficiently to play. She spoke again of the injury after her first round win over fellow American Kristie Ahn and apparently aggravated it while practising for her secondround match.
Sports Minister Rijiju launches new SAI logo
HiIndia Newsdesk Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju on Wednesday launched a brand new logo of the Sports Authority of India (SAI) and said it represents the aspirations of Indian sportspersons to touch new heights in global sports. “A logo is the identity of an organisation.
It reflects the thought process and the objectives of the organisation. We just thought we need a logo that is simpler and displays the ambitions of our sportspersons,” said Rijiju during the launch at the Major Dhyan Chand Stadium here. “SAI has been giving the athletes all necessary support so that their sporting careers are ready to take a flight -- that is what the flying figure in the logo indicates,” he added. He said SAI has big targets in mind towards 2024 and 2028 Olympics. “Our aim and objectives are very clear. We have kept a target of eight years and set ourselves a challenge.
Rahul Tewatia relive miracle in Sharjah Hits Sheldon Cottrell For Five Sixes In One Over
IPL 2020: Sanju Samson has played down comparisons with MS Dhoni saying "no one can “When I came to bat it was a good platform. I was under pressure because I could not play" and "no one should try to play" like Dhoni. hit from the start. But then Sanju Samson told me it was a matter of just one hit and that was always going through my mind,” Tewatia said in a virtual press-conference.
R
ajasthan Royals star batsman Sanju Samson on Tuesday shunned all comparisons of him being the next MS Dhoni saying "no one can play and no one should try" to play like Dhoni. Samson had played a knock of 85 runs against Kings XI Punjab as Rajasthan Royals chased down a target of 224 with four wickets in hand and three balls to spare. After his match-winning innings, Congress leader Shashi Tharoor had tweeted, "What an absolutely incredible win for @rajasthanroyals! I've known @iamSanjuSamson for a decade & told him when he was 14 that he would one day be the next MS Dhoni. Well, that day is here. After his two amazing innings in this IPL, you know a worldclass player has arrived." Samson said that it is not at all easy to play like the former Indian skipper so he never thinks about the same. "No one can play like MS Dhoni and no one should try playing like him that's what I like to suggest anyone. It's not at all easy to play like Dhoni," said Samson in a virtual press conference.
R
ahul Tewatia struck five sixes in an over at the fag end of the match as Rajasthan Royals recorded the highest run chase in IPL history, beating Kings XI Punjab by four wickets at Sharjah Cricket Stadium, UAE on Sunday. Chasing a stiff 224 for a win, the Royals needed 51 runs from the last three overs and it seemed the fate of the match was already sealed but Tewatia turned the match on its head in a dramatic fashion, taking 30 runs from Sheldon Cottrell in the 18th over. In an unbelievable turn of events, Tewatia (53 of 31 balls and 7 sixes), who was struggling to connect the ball after being pushed up the order ahead of the likes of Robin Uthappa, suddenly shifted gears as he hoisted Cottrell for a series of sixes much to the amazement of his team-mates and opposition players. He was finally out in the last ball of the 19th over and after that Jofra Archer (13 not out) and Tom Curran (4 not out) took the Royals home. It was the highest successful run-chase in IPL history.

Smart Air Conditioners of 2020

Samsung Galaxy F41

confirmed to launch with 64MP triple camera setup Samsung Galaxy F41 will also come with a 6,000mAh battery and a sAMOLED display.
Smart air conditioners can be controlled or scheduled from your phone no matter where you are, potentially saving you big bucks on energy bills. To be considered smart, an air conditioner needs to have a WiFi radio so it can connect to an app, allowing you to control and monitor it from your phone or tablet. No matter where you are, smart air conditioners let you do things like adjust the target temperature, change the fan speed, and turn them on and off. Many also let you set a cooling schedule, so they will kick on at a designated time. And some offer support
for Amazon Alexa, Apple Siri, and Google Assistant voice commands. The GE AHC08LY, our current Editors’ Choice in the category, even offers energy usage reports, and can use your phone's location services to cool down rooms before you arrive. That way, you’re not wasting energy—and money—cooling an empty room when you aren't there.
A robot that is smart about its cleaning
Once it memorises the map of the house. It remembers where it cleaned last time and starts from a new area. So the process is optimised. And it gets better with time as it learns the lay of the house’s terrain better. The Milagrow iMap 10 is a high-end robot with top of the line features, many of them unique. But why it stands out now is its ability to disinfect a floor as it cleans it. Milagrow earlier had the option of attaching a mop under the robot with a small water source. Now there is a water tank inside that forces water through the mop and the cleaning is more intentional. If you take off the mop, the robot recognises this and you get only dry cleaning. Also, in the tank, you can add disinfectants to ensure your house is clean of all the viruses that we are bothered about these days. As the name suggests, iMap 10 is a smart robot that maps where it is and where it should go. It uses Milagrow’s own RT2R (Real-time terrain recognition technology) to find its way around. While this is not the first Milagrow robot to do this, the iMap 10 is certainly the fastest and smartest. The motor of the new iMap 10 is powerful than before and the suction is better. So you do see an odd Lego piece inside the dust tank. The moping is also more forceful now that the water is squirted into the fabric layer at the bottom.

Federal judge Apple iPhone 12 Mini will postpones Trump ban reportedly skip 5G, on popular app TikTok cost $700 Apple’s iPhone 12 Mini is rumoured to come with a 5.4-inch OLED display and a smaller notch on the front. Here is the latest update on the upcoming compact iPhone. A federal judge on Sunday postponed a Trump administration order that would have banned the popular video sharing app TikTok from U.S. smartphone app stores around midnight. A more comprehensive ban remains scheduled for November, about a week after the presidential election. The judge, Carl Nichols of the U.S District Court for the District of Columbia, did not agree to postpone the later ban. The ruling followed an emergency hearing Sunday morning in which lawyers for TikTok argued that the administration’s app-store ban would infringe on First Amendment rights and do irreparable harm to the business. Earlier this year, President Donald Trump declared that TikTok was a threat to national security and that it must either sell its U.S. operations to American companies or be barred from the country. TikTok, owned by Chinese company ByteDance, is scrambling to firm up a deal tentatively struck a week ago in which it would partner with Oracle, a huge databasesoftware company, and Walmart in an effort to win the blessing of both the Chinese and American governments. In the meantime, it is fighting to keep the app available in the U.S.
I
t looks like a mini iPhone will very well be a part of Apple’s iPhone 12 series. Already, we have come across a bunch of leaks which give us a good idea about what to expect from the compact iPhone. Ahead of the official launch, more new information about the iPhone 12 Mini has
surfaced online. According to The Wall Street Journal analyst Tom Forte (via Gizchina), the iPhone 12 Mini will not come with 5G connectivity. It is likely to help the company offer the phone at a lower cost. The analyst believes the iPhone 12 mini will be available for around $700 ( ₹51,550 approximately). The price point will further help Apple better compete with some of the low-end premium phones such as Samsung Galaxy S20 Fan Edition which is priced at $699 ( ₹51,000 approximately). Interestingly, the Galaxy S20 FE comes with 5G support. There is an LTE version as well and is likely to cost much lesser. Based on reports so far, Apple’s iPhone 12 Mini appears to be aimed at emerging and price-sensitive markets such as India. A small form factor can also appeal to the iPhone loyalists who have long sought after a compact iPhone.

Zoom, the easy-to-use videoconferencing service, surged in popularity in the pandemic. But our sudden adoption of Zoom led to discoveries of the product’s weak security, which could have allowed attackers to hijack our web cameras, among other privacy snafus. Hansal Mehta had tweeted, “We wrapped a mammoth 85 days shoot spanning 6 months, 550 pages, 170+ characters and 200+ locations. It was tough but eventually satisfying. A great team saw this (and is still seeing it) through all the limitations and adversities. #Scam1992 is THEIR show. Mijwan, it tells the tale of a young Muslim girl who wants to pursue bharatnatyam. As she meet opposition from her community, her father stands by her side. The film’s lead star Aditi Subedi is also from Mijwan. “What it has done is that it has created sort of a chain reaction in the villages of Mijwan where suddenly the girls are feeling that it’ s OK to have a huge dream because it is possible that the dream can be realised. That to me, is what would have made my father very, very happy because he worked for the empowerment of the girl child and women all his life,” she told. “There are so many people in our small towns who have so much talent,” she added. Mee Raqsam’s biggest strength is the father-daughter relationship shared by Danish Hussain and Aditi. Shabana says her parents also taught her by example. She recalled how until the age of 9, she would live with a commune of eight-nine families, all sharing a single bathroom. “We never had any money. All the money we used to get, my father would give to the Communist Party,” she said, adding that he would give only Rs 40 for the family’s needs every month. “All the values that we got is from what we saw around us. Let’s remember that 70 years ago, my father wrote an iconic poem Aurat, which said ‘Uth meri jaan, mere saath hi chalna hai tujhe’, at a time when it was believed that the role of the woman was to sit at home and look after children. He said ‘No! You have to march, shoulder to shoulder’,” Shabana said. The film also stars Naseeruddin Shah, who plays a bigoted, unaccepting community leader who tries all he can to keep the young dancer away from her dreams.
Salman Khan on lockdown Haven’t taken such a long holiday in the last 30 years
On being asked by Shukla what he missed the most during these last few months, Khan revealed that he had not stepped out for the last six months. He shared that this was the first day he stepped out to shoot, as the promos for Bigg Boss 14 were shot at his farm house. “My biggest frustration is that I did not work for so long. I haven’t taken such a long holiday in the last 30 years as I did in this period. It was a forceful chutti (break) for me. I didn’t know what would happen. There is nothing better than honest work. Treat it as a hobby and you will enjoy it,” he said. The Tiger Zinda Hai actor further advised everyone that while it was important to resume work, one has to take precautions if they have family who could be at potential risk. Sharing that he was apprehensive when he came on sets for the first time, Salman Khan said, “I am scared to be back on the sets. Everyone is in masks, PPE kits and gloves. However, people do come close when they have to put the mic. I am scared of sneezes and even kisses.” He further mentioned that since he has elderly parents, Helen aunty and his toddler niece at home, it is important to remain safe. “We might be able to fight it, but our families may not. You can put them at risk even when you hug them. They will survive, but we wouldn’t want them to face the stress. You shouldn’t take panga (risk) with the unseen (referring to coronavirus), which has kind of stopped the whole world.” Starting October 3, Bigg Boss 14 will air MondayFriday at 10:30 pm and 9 pm on weekends.

auri Khan spoke about his journey from ebb to stardom, how they experienced and witnessed ups and downs, and also spending time with him during the lockdown. Talking about his stardom, she said, "Frankly I did not realise even after his films released, even after he gave those blockbusters. Took a long, long time for it to sink in that he has arrived." She added, "And it was very organic, gradual. It wasn't like I woke up one fine day in this place and said 'Wow, he has arrived'. It wasn't like that. It was his struggle...we went through ups and downs. He has accomplished so much and done so well for himself.. all of us are enjoying his hard work today." Talking about spending time with him in the last few months during the lockdown, Khan stated, "During this lockdown, we were initially scared to even order any food from outside. So 'ghar ka khana' is made by Shah Rukh himself and we are enjoying it. He loves cooking and I enjoy eating." And when asked about her children and now they have been spending time, she revealed, "Suhana has been busy with her online school while Aryan, who just finished college, is taking a much-needed break by relaxing, watching movies and playing games. Lata Mangeshkar turns
The nightingale, with 25,000 songs in over seven decades, is a gift that keeps giving. She is Hindi cinema’s greatest playback singer and even today, though she playbacks ever so rarely, Lata Mangeshkar’s melodious voice, as Dilip Kumar rightly put it, resides in all of us. Lata Mangeshkar’s first recorded song was in 1942. She was only 13. It was for a Marathi movie but was later dropped from the album. Despite every filmmaker’s best efforts to have at least one ditty sung by THE Lata Mangeshkar, these days the nightingale rarely enters the studio – her “temple”, in the immortal words of Naushad. Her last re corde d s ong was in 2015, in an Indo-Pak gay love story. From 1942 to 2015, that’s a recordshattering 73 years of continuous playback and only Mangeshkar, the high priestess of

Bollywood singing, could have managed that momentous feat. For 73 years, and even longer, she has regaled music listeners with her mellifluous voice and in total domination as Bollywood’s leading singer who, like a juggernaut, crushed every competition that came her way. Film magazines like Stardust had a name for it – the “Mangeshkar monopoly.” Between Lata and her younger sister and media-pitted rival Asha Bhosle, there was hardly any space for the third woman standing.

Karan Johar Our film industry is beautiful, there is no toxic culture: Vishal Bhardwaj Bollywood filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj has rubbished claims that the Indian film industry has a toxic working culture or an insider-outsider divide, saying some people having “vested interest” are trying to malign its image. Bhardwaj believes that people in the industry are always there to support each other and for somebody like him, who doesn’t belong to any film family, it has been a cherishable experience. The death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput has triggered a lot of debates including one of “outsider v/s insider”, with many targeting showbiz for illtreatment of people who don’t have any links within the industry. There is also a talk about the alleged drug-nexus. During a virtual press conference of Screenwriters Association (SWA) Awards on Friday, Vishal Bhardwaj in response to a question posed said, “I don’t personally feel there is toxic work culture. I believe there is so much love in our work culture. The film unit becomes like a complete family. There is such a beautiful work culture (here).”
F
ilmmaker Karan Johar on Friday issued a statement debunking media reports alleging that narcotics were consumed at one of his house parties, calling the claims “baseless and false”. In a lengthy statement shared on Instagram, the filmmaker said neither he consumes narcotics nor does he promote usage of any such substance. Karan Johar’s response came after an old video from a star-studded party at his residence resurfaced on social media, amid Narcotics Control Bureau’s (NCB) drugs probe in connection with actor Sushant Singh Rajput’s death. In the short clip, first posted by the filmmaker on instagram last year, actors Shahid Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, Ranbir Kapoor, Varun Dhawan, Arjun Kapoor, Malaika Arora, Vicky Kaushal among others can be seen partying together. It is being alleged that drugs were consumed by several top film personalities at this party. Siromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Manjinder Singh Sirsa in a tweet has claimed that Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) is set to summon Johar soon in the drug-related case. T h e d i re c t o r s a i d s u c h “slanderous” statements and news articles have subjected him, his family, colleagues, and banner Dharma Productions, to “hatred, contempt and ridicule”.
On the occasion of Daughters' Day, late actor Irrfan Khan's wife Sutapa Sikdar revealed how the two "desperately" wanted to have a daughter in their life. "Me and Irrfan wanted to have a daughter so desperately that on my second delivery my doc could not utter the word son and said instead 'congratulations!! healthy child!!' I was disappointed.... yes, I was. That day for us and today, I feel sad that a girl child got deprived of Irrfan's parenting of a girl. Because just giving freedom is not enough to a girl child," Sutapa wrote on her Facebook account. Along with it, she shared a video of an ad campaign, rooting for a girl child. "Whatever is happening around makes me say freedom is not about only being vocal it's not about treading on other's freedom only. Let's get up beyond being voyeuristic beyond the so called emancipation and do something more concrete and meaningful for India. There is subtitle but those who are not aware of my mother tongue might not enjoy as much," she added. Irrfan breathed his last on April 29. He is survived by wife Sutapa, and two sons -- Babil and Ayan.

Covid care centre in Kerala erupted into celebrations on Thursday to cheer up a bride missing her own nikah ceremony. Nineteen-year-old Faziya was admitted to the Covid centre set up at Mattancherry Town Hall on Wednesday, just a day before she was set to marry Niyaz, reports the New Indian Express. The bride-to-be had tested positive for the virus after being diagnosed with a fever. "I was about to venture out of the house to buy dresses for the wedding when I came to know that I had tested positive," she said to Times of India. While Faziya was admitted to the First-Line Treatment Centre (FLTC) to recover from COVID-19, her family decided to go ahead with the nikah ceremony as planned, since the presence of the bride is not mandatory. So while Faziya, dressed in her wedding finery, sat at the Covid care centre, her nikah continued at a nearby mosque. The bride's special day, however, was made even more special by other residents of the centre who organised a surprise party for her.
"Though her presence was not required in marriage, they decided to throw a surprise Oppana party to keep her spirits high," said a health inspector at Mattancherry First-Line Treatment Centre.
Sir David Saree, Sneakers Attenborough Broke And A Hula Hoop Dance To 'Genda Phool' Has This Record When He This Twitter Impressed Joined Instagram
L
egendary British broadcaster Sir David Attenborough broke the internet on Thursday as he joined Instagram, setting a new record of the fastest time to reach one million followers on the platform. The naturalist made his debut on the platform with an IGTV video of himself. As per Guinness World Records, the followers on his account shot up to one million-mark within four hours of him posting the video. With it, Sir David Attenborough became the fastest user to reach one million followers, smashing actor Jennifer Aniston's record. The video also received love from his fans all over as it gained more than 14 million views. "I am making this move... because, as we all know, the world is in trouble. Continents are on fire.
n his interview Mumbai resident Nitesh Jaiswal opened up about the struggles his parents faced to educate him and his brother. He spoke about how his "uneducated and underprivileged" parents worked hard to raise two medicos, despite facing financial as well as societal pressures. "My parents are originally from Ut t a r P r a d e s h - they married young and moved to Bombay after in pursuit of a better life," said Mr Jaiswal. They had barely any money to their names, but his father soon managed to find a job at an electrical factory. Within a few months, however, he lost three fingers in a mishap and was fired without any compensation. To look after the family, Mr Jaiswal's mother began to take up odd jobs while nursing her husband. "But her family tried hard to convince her to leave dad. They'd say, 'You've only been married two years, it's not too late to leave this disabled man,' but mom refused," says Nitesh Jaiswal. He spoke about the sacrifices his parents made so their children could study. "They saved every penny to send me and my brother to an English medium school - there were days that they slept hungry, so we had a roti to fill our stomachs." The family moved to a rented chawl, where neighbours often taunted them, claims Mr Jaiswal. "Our neighbours and relatives would taunt dad and say, 'You can't even afford food, send them to a municipality school.' But we studied hard- we'd be at the library
H
oop dancer Eshna Kutty's dance to Genda Phool is creating waves on social media. The routine looks quite tough to begin with - but add to that the fact that she performs with a hula hoop while wearing a saree and it's little wonder that netizens are amazed. Eshna, 23, posted the dance video on Instagram Thursday, from where it quickly reached Twitter. The performance impressed many, quickly garnering a ton of praise. It was 'retweeted' on the microblogging platform this morning by her mother, journalist Chitra Narayanan. "Woke up to several people Whatsapping me this video! Meet my daughter who has sparked off a #sareeflow trend," Chitra Narayanan wrote while sharing the clip. The video shows her daughter dressed in a maroon saree and sneakers, hoop dancing with expert ease to the Dilli 6 song.

ike many of her generation, Mya-Rose Craig feels strongly that adults have failed to take the urgent action needed to tackle global warming and so she has headed to the Arctic Ocean to protest. Armed with a placard reading 'Youth Strike for Climate", the 18-year-old British activist is staging the most northerly protest in a series of youth strikes worldwide. The strikes, made famous by Swedish campaigner Greta Thunberg, are resuming after a lull caused by the global coronavirus pandemic to draw public attention back to the threat posed by climate change. "I'm here to... try and make a statement about
in t he d ay and burnt the midnight oil to avoid our ne i g hb ou rs ; we always scored well," he recalls. Over the years, Mr Jaiswal claims, their neighbours would play loud music during their exams or start baseless fights to distract them. "It got worse when they found out we were both going to be medical professionals," he says. The day before his entrance exam, they started blaming the family for some water leakage. "They beat us up and as a result all of us were put in lock up," says Mr Jaiswal. He had to take his entrance exam, so he begged for bail. He was finally allowed to leave at 2AM. But he says that his parents' struggles have paid off. His mother used all her savings to buy a piece of land and later sold it off to pay for her sons' college. "But it's all paid off - my brother has a Bachelors in Dental Surgery, and I'm working as a research associate for COVID right now," says Nitesh Jaiswal. "We're finally in a place where we can take care of our family- we still live in the same chawl, but we're saving to buy another flat so that we can finally move from here." He ends his interview with a touching tribute to his parents: "It's genuinely not about where you come from, it's about where you want to go in life, and my parents proved that; two uneducated, underprivileged parents can raise two medicos."
Teen Climate Activist Stages Protest From Arctic Ice Cap how temporary this amazing landscape is and how our leaders have to make a decision now in order to save it," she told Reuters Television as she stood with her placard on the edge of the Arctic sea ice. "I absolutely think that my generation has always had to think about climate change... which is why as we've got older there's been this massive wave of just this need for change, this demand for change when we realised the grown-ups aren't going to solve this so we have to do it ourselves." Craig, from southwest England, is known as "Birdgirl" online, where her blog chronicling her bird-watching experiences has attracted thousands of followers.

I’m so proud to be the first but I also have to acknowledge all the Indigenous finalists and Indigenous sitters for this year and past years,” the artist added. “To me it’s about time for an Aboriginal person to be recognised as an Archibald winner and also a turning point for Aboriginal people in Australia.” Explaining why he chose Goodes as his subject, Namanjira said that he had first met the footballer in 2018 and then decided to paint him after watching a documentary called ‘The Final Quarter’, which followed his last season playing professional football.

Cooked carrots known Recurrent heart attacks on the decline, yet risk remains high to trigger allergic reactions
A A
new study suggests that contrary to the belief that raw carrots trigger allergic reactions, cooked carrots can also have this effect The study was conducted by a research team of the University of Bayreuth. The carrot’s allergen, Dau c 1, assumes a structure that is harmless to allergy sufferers when highly heated. However, as soon as the temperature drops, it largely regains its natural structure. The researchers present their study in the journal ‘Molecular Nutrition & Food Research.’ “The results of our research clearly suggest that sufferers who are sensitive to the carrot allergen should generally avoid eating
The risk of allergy patients developing an allergic reaction arises not only when eating freshly cooked carrots or canned carrots. It also arises when carrot extract is added to food carrots. Heating carrots does not destroy or only incompletely destroys the protein structures that can cause allergic reactions,” said Prof. Dr. Birgitta Wohrl from the Biochemistry IV research group at the University of Bayreuth. “The risk of allergy patients developing an allergic reaction arises not only when eating freshly cooked carrots or canned carrots. It also arises when carrot extract is added to food,” added Thessa Jacob M.Sc., first author of the study and PhD student at the Biochemistry IV research group. The natural carrot allergen Dau c 1 is actually a mixture of several, structurally very similar proteins. These so-called isoallergens were produced individually in the laboratory in bacteria. Both the protein mixture of the natural Dau c 1 and the individual isoallergens were examined at temperatures up to 95 degrees Celsius to see how their structures change upon increasing and decreasing the temperature. This analysis showed that the natural mixture and almost all isoallergens are still capable of causing allergies after cooling down to 25 degrees Celsius. Despite the previous heating, antibodies present in the organism of allergy patients will still trigger allergic reactions. Although in some cases this effect is less pronounced than before heating, it is generally maintained. “This is the first time that the Dau c 1 isoallergens have been subjected to such an extensive series of tests. The separate examination of the structurally similar molecules was particularly important to us in order to determine which of the isoallergens trigger immune reactions under the tested conditions,” said Thessa Jacob M.Sc. The tests clearly showed that the structural stability of the carrot allergen does not depend on temperature alone. Acidity, as expressed by the pH value, is also important. Of particular interest is pH value 3, which typically prevails in the stomach after food intake.
ccording to new research, after surviving a heart attack, the proportion of patients who experience a repeat attack within a year fall between 2008 and 2017, with a greater decline in women than men. The research was published today in the American Heart Association’s flagship journal Circulation. Despite the improvement, the rate of recurrent heart attacks, hospitalisation for heart failure, and death
remain high in heart attack survivors. “Secondary events after a heart attack may be prevented by ensuring that patients receive guideline-recommended treatments to lower the risk for recurrent heart disease and death after hospital discharge,” said Sanne A. E. Peters, Ph.D., lead author of the study and senior lecturer at The George Institute for Global Health in collaboration with Imperial College London, United Kingdom. We expected to see a decline in the rate of events, however, we did not expect the rates to differ between the sexes. It may be that the improvements in men were achieved before our study period, leaving less room for improvement in the most recent decade. It could also be that the attention paid to heart disease in women over recent years has resulted in greater gains. However, regardless of the improvements, the rates of recurrent events in people who survived a heart attack are still very high in both sexes. Patients should speak with their doctors to ensure that they get the right treatments to prevent secondary events and must make sure that they adopt or maintain a healthy lifestyle,” said Peters.

The final guidance for industry describes procedures drug manufacturers can follow to facilitate importation of prescription drugs, including biological products, that are FDAapproved, manufactured abroad, authorized for sale in any foreign country, and originally intended for sale in that foreign country. “Today’s action is an important part of FDA’s priorities to promote choice and competition. The Safe Importation Action Plan aims to clearly describe procedures to import drugs that would lower prices and improve access while also maintaining the high quality and safety Americans expect and deserve,” said FDA Commissioner Stephen M. Hahn, M.D. “The FDA will continue to assess and act on opportunities to increase competition in the prescription drug market and help reduce the cost of medicines.” The rule allows states (including the District of Columbia and territories), Indian tribes and — in certain future circumstances — pharmacists and wholesalers, to submit

Indian American High School Senior Tackling Racial Injustice with New Nonprofit BY A STAFF WRITER IRVINE, TX - A high school senior in Irvine, California, has grown increasingly passionate over the past several years about tackling the inequalities embedded in the justice system throughout the U.S. Arush Mehrotra, a senior at University High School in Irvine, began his journey when he first read The New Jim Crow by Michelle Alexander. “With every turn of a page, I was struck with a sense of disbelief by the policing and judicial injustices being committed en masse,” the Indian American student said in a press release. “In particular, I couldn’t wrap my head around the idea that laws like the ones establishing the crack vs. cocaine sentencing disparity were enacted by our Congressional legislature.” Upon realizing that many of these problems exist outside of mainstream public consciousness, Mehrotra sought to put a spotlight on the criminal justice reform agenda. He began to write opinion articles in his school newspaper about topics like cash bail, private prisons, the death penalty, and more. “It was my quest to generate broader understanding and hope for finding solutions,” he said. Mehtrotra has published articles in local news outlets and also started a podcast titled “Unjustified.” Seeing the impact that his journalistic advocacy had in sparking a conversation on these issues, he was inspired to do more. “In the winter of my junior year, I had the idea to create a platform whereby youth like me had an opportunity to increase the depth of their civic engagement and become involved with the community around them,” he said. “That platform materialized itself into my nonprofit organization: the OC Justice Project.”
3
Arush Mehrotra
The OC Justice Project, which currently spans seven high schools in Irvine and Tustin, has three main goals: increase awareness about justice-related topics, raise funds to directly support marginalized community members, and inspire community involvement through political advocacy work, a release said. In the month of June, the OC Justice Project, which can be followed @ocjusticeproject on Instagram, hosted a roundtable discussion on the Black Lives Matter movement. The forum was attended by 30 local community members generating an engaging discussion with participants sharing their viewpoints and personal experiences on topics like police brutality, the poverty cycle, the prison industrial complex and more. “We have an active presence on social media platforms and post concise infographics about relevant issues,” he explained. “We recently launched a fundraiser inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement in which we raised over $1000 and sold over 50 shirts to individuals
from all across Orange County.” The OC Justice Project will be donating the proceeds to causes like the Youth Justice Coalition in LA which works to support at-risk youth and abolish the school to prison pipeline. With the importance of this year in terms of the elections, the nonprofit is currently creating a voter guide to better inform Orange County residents of both local and state elections and setting up town halls with local political candidates to promote voter engagement, the release said. Over the course of the last few months, the OC Justice Project has grown to symbolize more than just a community of individuals simply interested in social justice; it stands for the power that each and every one of us holds to make a difference in the lives of others, it said. “We are very encouraged by the engagement and support we have got,” Mehrotra said. “We will keep working tirelessly for a society fair and just, where the words ‘equal justice for all’ are no longer an idealistic statement, but a reality.”
BY A STAFF WRITER CLAREMONT, CA- Claremont Graduate University Drucker School of Management Sept. 9 announced that Ryan Patel, already a go-to authority on political economy and corporate governance, has received a new honor as well as a new course. The Indian American, also a global business executive and frequent contributor to a wide variety of media outlets, is an advisory board member and senior fellow with the Drucker School of Management, the university release said. And soon he will be offering a transdisciplinary course on global leadership, the release said. Patel has been named by the National Association of Asian American Professionals as one of this year’s recipients of the NAAAP100 Award, which recognizes the exemplary leadership and entrepreneurial achievements of members of the Asian and Pacific Islander communities, CGU said. “Patel’s unique and inherent knowledge of the ever-changing nature of trends,” the NAAAP announcement said, “has been vital in providing valuable strategy and leadership in developing domestic and international growth plans across multi-cultural and cross-functional teams for some of the world’s most innovative companies.” NAAAP is one of the oldest, largest, and fastest-growing pan-Asian organizations in North America. Previous award winners include the late Senator Daniel Inouye, Pepsico CEO Indra Nooyi, Superbowl MVP Hines Ward, and playwright David Henry Hwang. In Patel’s acceptance remarks he said that although he wished he could speak at the conference and meet everyone in person, “this ‘new normal’ is an opportunity for all of us to still use our voices and to come together.” This is already evident, he added, in the cultural awareness being spread across news and media right now, the release notes. “I’m looking forward to actual impact, not just a tokenism of diversity and inclusion, but an actual place where we have accountability, results, and all of us can come together,” said Patel. In his new course, Patel will be covering seven modules on topics and issues central in most financial discussions today: the global economy, marketing and brand, corporate leadership, technology, diversity, inclusion, equity, and scaling businesses for a global market, it said. Patel’s goal is to draw on his regular engagement with business media on breaking global business news to immerse his students in real-world scenarios taking place in real-time. “I’m excited about this. I really want this experience to be different for my students,” he said in the university report. “This course will focus on individuals learning to work on teams and how to build brands for themselves. I’m going to assign them group projects that will allow them to address some of the kinds of situational problems that I’ve encountered in my career.” Patel received his BA from UC Berkeley, his MBA from the UC Irvine Paul Merage School of Business, and his Corporate Governance and Board of Directors Certification from UCLA Anderson School of Management.

Indian Overseas Congress, USA Condemns the Rape and Murder of Manisha Valmiki of Hathras, U.P. BY A STAFF WRITER CHICAGO, IL -Indian Overseas Congress, USA joins millions of non-resident Indians across the globe in condemning the horrific rape and murder of Manisha Valmiki of Hathras, U.P. The barbarity and the bestiality involved in the killing show the depraved and criminal mindsets of those who perpetrated such heinous acts against a Dalit woman who is from the lowest rung of India’s caste system. The ghastly way this woman was raped and murdered has indeed shaken the nation to its core and terrorized the people of conscience across the world. The victim, who belonged to the Dalit community, was raped by four men on September 14 in the heartland state of Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras district. The woman’s family told local media that they found her naked, bleeding, and paralyzed with a split tongue and broken spine in a field outside her home. On Tuesday, she died two weeks later after battling severe injuries in a hospital in New Delhi. To add insult to injury, the police barricaded her family members & locals inside the house and forcibly burned the body. The family was not allowed to see their daughter for one last time and say good-bye. As it has been said by Yogendra Yadav, “even criminals are allowed dignified cremation. Here is a rape victim being cremated by
police at 2.30 AM without family members”. “Mr. Yogi Adityanath, the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, it is your party which is in power. Given your supremacy within the party in U.P. and the centralized control you exercise, you more than anyone else have to be held responsible for this terrifying state of affairs,” said George Abraham, ViceChairman of the Indian Overseas Congress, USA. Your past statement, such as ‘women not capable of being left alone and their energy should be regulated, lest it becomes worthless and destructive,” is not only despicable but misogynistic and chauvinistic. “while you have ordered an inquiry, Mr. Chief Minister, you haven’t taken any steps to cure this rape culture in your state or shown any resolve to change the social, political, and administrative conditions under which such anti-Dalit hatred is bred,”
said Mohinder Singh Gilzian, President of the Indian Overseas Congress, USA. Your continuing inaction in this regard will gain you the title as the Chief administrator of the notorious Rape State in India,” Mr. Gilzian added. “It is indeed the growing culture of violence emanating out of the wrong-headed sense of ultra-nationalism and majoritarian arrogance that is polarizing the communities and dividing the nation. We call upon the Modi Government to stop paying lip service with slogans like “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao” and provide true leadership in bringing perpetrators of this pervasive rape and abuse of women culture across the country to justice regardless of their party affiliations and oust any government officials who remains stumbling blocks to that effort” the statement added.
Concerned Citizen’s Report Leads to Border Patrol and Webb County Sheriff’s Office Shutting Down Stash House CBP NEWS RELEASE LAREDO, TEXAS – Acting together on a report from a concerned citizen, U.S. Border Patrol agents from the Laredo South Station and Webb County Sheriff ’s Office (WCSO) deputies closed down a stash house in Rio Bravo, Texas. The incident occurred during the late morning of September 30, when agents along with deputies acted on the information of a possible stash house. Agents and deputies apprehended 39 individuals who were determined to be in the United States illegally from the countries of Mexico and Guatemala. Two of the individuals had active warrants of arrest for Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol and were turned over to WCSO for extradition. None of the individuals were wearing any personal protective equipment (PPE). With a noted increase in COVID-19 infections among detainees, the smuggling and housing of large groups of individuals in stash houses and close quarters without

PPE not only endangers the people being smuggled, but the safety of our Nation. Border Patrol agents of the Laredo Sector will continue to work with our local law enforcement partners to ensure the agency’s enduring mission priorities of combatting transnational crime and securing the border. alien and/or drug smuggling, download the “USBP Laredo Sector” App or contact the Laredo Sector Border Patrol toll free at 1-800-343-1994. If you see something, please say something. A philanthropist and influential leader who is dedicated to public welfare in Nepal, KC was born in Dhading, Nepal, said the release. He has an extraordinary vision to uplift the quality of life of the poverty-stricken population of Nepal, the release added. Nabaraj has always been concerned about the healthcare conditions in Nepal, which currently are not adequate to meet the healthcare needs of the population. Indian American Woman Pleads Guilty to Medicare Kickback Scheme BY A STAFF WRITER S AC R A M E N TO , C A - T h e U . S . Attorney’s Office in the Eastern District of California Sept. 10 announced that Anita Vijay pleaded guilty to conspiring to pay and receive illegal kickbacks in exchange for Medicare beneficiary referrals and to soliciting kickbacks in exchange for Medicare beneficiary referrals. According to court documents, Vijay, 50, of Sacramento, used her role as the Social Services director at a skilled nursing and assisted living facility in Sacramento to steer Medicare beneficiaries to home health agencies in Folsom and El Dorado Hills and a hospice agency in Folsom.
Representative image
In exchange for the referrals, the
agencies’ owners paid her and her husband,
Jai Vijay, illegal cash kickbacks, United States Attorney McGregor W. Scott said in making the announcement. Medicare paid the agencies approximately $400,000 for services they purportedly provided to the beneficiaries. Because the agencies obtained the referrals by paying kickbacks, they should not have received any reimbursement from Medicare. Vijay is scheduled back in court Dec. 3 and faces up to five years in prison for the conspiracy charge and 10 years in prison for the kickback charge, as well as a maximum fine of $250,000 or twice the gross loss or gain.
