‘No fooling around’ with impeachment
Democrats warns Trump they’re ‘not fooling around’ with impeachment; he shot back calling their efforts ‘bull****’ ARUL LOUIS, NEW YORK
D
emanding cooperation from the administration in collecting documents and evidence against US President Donald Trump, the Democrats have warned Trump that they were “not fooling around” with impeachment proceedings against him and he shot back with invectives calling their efforts “bull****”. With Speaker Nancy Pelosi beside him, House of Representative Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff told the administration to comply with Congressional requests for documents and evidence relating to Trump’s phone conversation with Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky about the involvement of ex-Vice President Joe Biden’s son Hunter in a gas company. Schiff said, “We’re not fooling around here. We don’t want this to drag on months and months and
US to impose 7.5bn tariff on EU goods WASHINGTON: The US has announced plans to impose tariffs on $7.5 billion worth of European goods after the World Trade Organization (WTO) decided in favor of Washington and gave it permission to levy tariffs on the European Union exports to counteract subsidies to Airbus. The new duties represent the most significant trade action against the EU since the administration of US President Donald Trump hit the bloc with steel and aluminium duties in 2018. The move can further sour relations between allies that have long sought to resolve trade disputes without resorting to tariffs. “The US will begin applying WTO-approved tariffs on certain EU goods beginning October 18,” US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer said in a statement. In a long-awaited ruling, the WTO said that Washington may impose trade sanctions worth $7.5 billion annually on the EU. The US’ top trade official explained that, for now, the tariffs increases will be limited to 10 per cent on large civil aircraft that the EU sells to the US and 25 per cent on certain agricultural and other products, according to Efe news. —IANS

not pressured by Trump, as Democrats allege. The Democrat’s case for impeachment is that Trump was pressuring a foreign leader to help him politically in the upcoming election for which the elder Biden is seeking his party’s nomination and had been withholding aid to Kyiv while the call was made. In a multi-pronged strategy, the House Oversight Committee is also seeking evidence from the White House. Its chair, Elijah Cummings,

Giuliani had visited Ukraine to dig up information on the Bidens and had been mentioned in the Trump-Zelensky call. A House demand for documents from Giuliani ended up as a dud on Wednesday when the State Department complied and they were found to be newspaper clippings and inconsequential notes.
Suspend Trump’s Twitter account: Harris IANS, WASHINGTON
C
alifornia Senator Kamala Harris, who is a 2020 Democrat presidential candidate, has asked Twitter to suspend US President Donald Trump’s account for attacking lawmakers and the whisteblower behind a complaint on his shady dealings with Ukraine. “Trump’s Twitter account should be suspended. There’s plenty of evidence to suggest that he is irresponsible with his words in a way that could result in harming so the privilege of using those words in that way should probably be taken from him,” Harris told CNN this week “If you look at what he’s been tweeting today directed at the whistleblower, I frankly think that based on this and all we’ve seen before, including attacking members of Congress, that his Twitter account should be suspended,” she added. be related to former Vice President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter, according to a transcript of the call released last week by the White House. The US House Intelligence Committee has subpoenaed Giuliani, asking him to cooperate with the ongoing impeachment inquiry against Trump launched by the House Democrats on September 24 and provide documents related to his dealings with Ukraine. Trump continued to defend himself against the accusations. “We’re trying to find out about a whistleblower. We have a whistleblower that reports things that were incorrect,” he said at the White House.
‘Trump suggested shooting migrants in the legs’ WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump suggested shooting migrants in the legs to slow them down, according to a new book. The book, by two New York Times journalists, says Trump suggested extreme methods of deterring migrants from crossing the southern border, the BBC reported on Wednesday. They included building an
electrified, spiked border wall and a snake or alligator-infested moat. Building a wall on the border with Mexico is one of Trump’s main policy objectives. The construction of the wall has now begun, with the Pentagon allocating $3.6 billion of military funding towards its development. The White House has not commented on the latest reports.
The book - called ‘Border Wars: Inside Trump’s Assault on Immigration’, by reporters Michael Shear and Julie Davis, and based on interviews with more than a dozen unnamed officials — was published by the New York Times. It chronicles a week in March 2019 when Trump reportedly tried to halt all southern migration to the US. — IANS

‘Kashmir to be top state by 2029’ Hurdles in the development of Kashmir had been erased with the abrogation of Article 370, says Home Minister Amit Shah Bharat train, which has been manufactured at a Chennai-based factory, was a gift to the countrymen from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “A new history is being created through Vande Bharat, which will be a great medium of tourism to Jammu and Kashmir,” he added.

lagging off the second semi-high speed indigenous Vande Bharat train from the national capital to Katra in Jammu and Kashmir, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday announced that Kashmir would be in the “list of most developed Indian states in the next decade and a beginning in that direction has already been made today by the Railways”. Shah said the hurdles in the development of Kashmir had been erased with the abrogation of Article 370 that gave the erstwhile state a special status. “With the scrapping of Article 370, Kashmir has become a part of India like the other states,” he said. The Minister said Article 370, which was scrapped on August 5, was not only a hurdle in country’s unity and integrity, but also the
‘Not visiting Pak for corridor opening’ NEW DELHI: Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Thursday ruled out a visit to Pakistan for the Kartarpur corridor opening, making it clear that he would be only leading the first all-party ‘jatha’ (religious group) to the Kartarpur Sahib Gurdwara to pay obeisance. Amid reports incorrectly suggesting that former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had accepted Pakistan’s invitation to go there for the opening of the Kartarpur corridor, the Chief Minister said he did not believe the former Prime Minister had any such plans either. “There is no question of me going (to Pakistan for Kartarpur corridor opening) and I feel Dr Manmohan Singh will not go as well,” he said, pointing out that there was a huge difference between visiting Pakistan and going to the historic gurdwara through the corridor. The Chief Minister’s remarks came in response to questions after a section of the media erroneously claimed that Manmohan Singh had accepted Pakistan’s invite and would be going across the border for the Kartarpur corridor inauguration. The fact was that Manmohan Singh had accepted Amarinder Singh’s invitation to join the ‘jatha’, to be led by the Chief Minister, through the Kartarpur corridor, to pay obeisance at the gurdwara across the border, an official spokesperson said. —IANS

Vande Bharat Express will run between Delhi and Katra facilitating travel up to the Hindu shrine of Vaishno Devi. The booking for the train will start from Saturday. The Home Minister said that there is great importance of religious tourism in Jammu and Kashmir for the development of the region.
Shah said that the journey to the shrine had been very difficult in the past but Vande Bharat would make it very easy. This move is part of an initiative adopted by Narendra Modi government since it came in power in 2014, the Minister said, adding the motive was to spread a web of high speed trains across the country aimed at bringing down the journey time with safe travel in felicitating people to reach their destinations including religious. Shah said it is true that PM Modi played a great role in adjoining Kashmir with India forever by abrogating Article 370, a move which was never expected. Recalling Mahatma Gandhi, a day after his 150th birth anniversary, Shah said the indigenous Vande Bharat Express has fulfilled the approach of the Father of the Nation stressing to adopt “Swadeshi”.

UK PM: Brexit plan ‘genuine’ attempt to bridge chasm
The UK government is now hoping to begin a period of intense negotiations with the aim of reaching a final agreement at an EU summit on October 17 IANS, LONDON
U
K Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Thursday said that he has made a “genuine attempt to bridge the chasm” in order to get a fresh Brexit deal with the EU as he appealed to MPs in the House of Commons to support his proposals. Johnson told MPs that his proposals — which would see Northern Ireland stay in the European single market for goods but leave the customs union — were a “compromise”. He has maintained that the UK will leave the EU on October 31, with or without a deal. Opposition Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn criticized the “unrealistic and damaging proposals”, while the European Commis-

intense negotiations with the aim of reaching a final agreement at an EU summit on October 17. “This government has moved, our proposals do represent a com-
promise and I hope that the House can now come together in the national interest, behind this new deal,” Johnson told MPs. The Prime Minister’s proposal aims to replace the Irish border “backstop” in the existing withdrawal agreement — which has been rejected three times by MPs. The backstop is the controversial “insurance policy” that is meant to keep a free-flowing border on the island of Ireland but which critics — including Johnson — fear could trap the UK in EU trading rules indefinitely. It has proved to be the sticking point in negotiations. “I believe this is our chance and their chance to get a deal,” Johnson said. But he added that the two sides were “some way from a resolution”. n 18-year-old Hongkonger is in a critical condition in hospital after being shot in the chest at close range with a live round by the police on September 1, as the Asian financial hub was convulsed by unprecedented chaos on a day when communist China celebrated its 70th birthday. At least 31 people, including the teenage student with a gunshot wound, were admitted to hospitals with injuries, according to the Hong Kong Hospital Authority. The young man’s injury marked the first time a protester was injured from a live round since the anti-government demonstration movement erupted in the semiautonomous Chinese city in early June. dent, which sent shockwaves through Hong Kong, occurred in the residential area of Tsuen Wan. TV footage captured by the local media showed a group of police officers clashing with a group of umbrel-
la-wielding black-clad protesters. While the latter hurled objects such as bricks at the police, one officer aimed his gun at the protesters — apparently being just two meters away — and fired a live round.
One of the black-clad protesters then fell to the ground. Still conscious, he said: “Take me to the hospital. My chest hurts. Take me to the hospital.” He identified himself as Tsang Chi-kin while being attended to by paramedics, according to Efe news. Speaking of the incident in a video statement later, a police spokeswoman said “a large group of rioters” attacked the police officers whose lives were therefore “under threat”. “To save his own live and his colleagues’ lives, he fired a live round at the assailant,” the spokeswoman spoke of the officer who deployed his gun, adding that the young man’s “left shoulder area” was injured.

ndian-origin tech millionaire Tushar Atre who was abducted from his home in California's Santa Cruz earlier this week has been found dead inside his BMW car. Atre, 50 — owner of digital marketing company AtreNet Inc which caters to Silicon Valley corporate businesses — was kidnapped from his house around 3 a.m. "during a crime", the Santa Cruz county sheriff's office said, adding that he was last seen getting into his white BMW. Sheriff's deputies said they responded to Atre's home in the 3000 block of Pleasure Point Rd. after receiving a 911 call from someone inside the residence that day who reported a home invasion and kidnapping. Deputies located the car on Tuesday afternoon in the Santa Cruz Mountains and found a body in the same location. "We have some unfortunate news, we have found the car associated with this case along with a deceased person," the office said in a Facebook statement. On Wednesday afternoon, the office confirmed the body found was identified as

ABU DHABI: A 19-year-old Delhibased Christian girl who flew to Abu Dhabi earlier this month and embraced Islam, has rubbished reports that she has been abducted and coerced into joining a terrorist group, adding that she came to the UAE for love. “This is not true. I have found my true calling and have come to Abu Dhabi of my own free will. No one forced me. I am an adult citizen of India and can make my own decision,” Ciyani Benny, now known as Aisha, told Gulf News on Sunday. A final year under-graduate student at the Jesus and Mary College, Ciyani attended classes until on September 18. However, the same day, she took a flight to Abu Dhabi to marry an Abu Dhabi-based Indian man she became friends with on social media about nine months ago.

Sandeep Dhaliwal, 42, was the county’s first Sikh Deputy when he joined the force 10 years ago, and became a national figure after convincing the Department to allow him to wear religious attire and grow a beard while on patrol, reports The Houston Chronicle newspaper. “He wore the turban, he represented his community with integrity, respect and pride and he was respected by all,” Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said at a press conference on Friday night. “It’s the worst day, the worst nightmare for any police executive,” he added. around 12.45 p.m. on Friday in the 14800 block of Willancy Court in the Cypress area. Lee said the dashcam video showed that Dhaliwal and the suspect, Robert Solis, 47, still in his car, having a conversation with no sign of confrontation. A few seconds after Dhaliwal returned to his squad car, the sus-
pect ran up and shot him in the head multiple times, Lee said. Dhaliwal was airlifted to the hospital, where he died. Solis was charged late Friday with capital murder in the case, The Houston Chronicle reported. A woman who was outside gardening heard the shot and saw Solis run to a getaway car. Lee said the suspect then went to a store nearby. After a brief search, authorities detained Solis, who has a criminal record that includes convictions for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, aggravated kidnapping and driving while intoxicated. Dhaliwal, a father of three young children, began his career in law enforcement out of a desire to serve after then-Sheriff Adrian
Garcia reached out to strengthen the department’s relationship with the Sikh community after deputies botched a domestic violence call at a Sikh family’s home. He was also very active at his Gurudwara, and his house of worship held a special ceremony after he became a Deputy. “He was very, very, very important,” community member Sampuran Singh said. “He was always willing to do what the community needed him to do.” Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner in a tweet on Friday said that Sandeep Dhaliwal “represented the diversity and inclusiveness of our community and everything that is good”, while Texas Governor Greg Abbott called the Deputy’s death a “tragic loss”.

India hits back at Imran for UNGA ‘hate speech’
“Islamabad ventures to upstream terrorism and downstream hate speech” IANS, UNITED NATIONS
After UNGA setback, Khan removes Maleeha Lodhi
I
ndia has hit back at Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan’s UNGA address, saying his speech bordered on crudeness and while Islamabad has “ventured to upstream terrorism and downstream hate speech, New Delhi was going ahead with mainstreaming development in Jammu and Kashmir”. Using strong words, Vidisha Maitra, First Secretary Ministry of External Affairs, exercising India’s right of reply to Khan’s speech, said: “Rarely has the General Assembly witnessed such misuse, rather abuse, of an opportunity to reflect.” She said the choice of Khan’s words to attack India, like “pogrom”, “bloodbath”, “racial superiority”, “pick up the gun” and “fight to the end”, reflected a “medieval mindset and not a 21st Century vision”. She said Pakistan’s “virulent reaction to the removal of an outdated and temporary provision (Article 370) that was hindering development and integration of the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir stems from the fact that those who thrive on conflict never welcome the ray of peace”. “While Pakistan has ventured to upstream terrorism and down-

He said, “The process has not been fast because we want to make sure there have been consensus. That consensus has not been forthcoming.” “The question of what other regions should have more representation is also part of it,” he added. He said that the Council reform is an issue for all countries, not just Africa, because of the principle of democratisation. —IANS

UNITED NATIONS: Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan has abruptly removed his country’s Permanent Representative Maleeha Lodhi after failing to make headway in his Kashmir campaign at the General Assembly’s high-level meeting. Pakistani media reported that she will be replaced by Munir Akram, who had done a stint as the permanent representative. Akram was involved in an alleged domestic violence incident in 2002 just as Pakistan was taking its place on Security Council as an elected member and the US asked his country to lift his diplomatic immunity so he could be prosecuted. But he managed to stay on till 2008. Despite Maleeha Lodhi’s campaign at the UN and Khan’s intense diplomatic activity, only three coun-

Khan acknowledged the failure, saying when he returned home, “Whether the world stands with Kashmiris or not, Pakistan is standing by them.” Lodhi survived a major snafu in 2017 when she held up a picture of an injured Palestinian girl in the General Assembly claiming that she was a Kashmiri and the hoax was exposed. Trump’s UNGA speech top trend IANS, NEW DELHI
U
S President Donald Trump’s speech at United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) was the top trending hashtag on twitter while Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan’s UNGA address became the second-most trending hashtag on the micro-blogging site. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s address the the UNGA was trending at the 5th spot. Praising PM Modi, a Twitter user posted: “Pm Narendra Modi ji’s speech will be remembered in history for being one of the finest expositions of nuanced statesmanship. While invoking Buddha and an ancient Tamil poet, the messaging against terror was as unequivocal and firm. Not even mentioning the Pakistan. #ModiUNGA.”

“Watching Trump address the UN is like watching Chewbacca trying to play King Lear. It’s that grotesque. Evolution must have been pissed and off duty the night he was conceived. #TrumpUNGA,” posted another user. Echoing similar opinion for Pakistani PM, the Twitterati wrote:
“Imran khan’s Speech in 3 Sentence. 1. I need money 2. I will not pay you back. 3. I will destroy the world #UNGA #ImranUNGA #unitednation #UnitedNations.” Khan was also trolled for an embarrassing gaffe where he referred to Modi as “President” during his maiden address to the UNGA.

Nation remembers Gandhi on his sesquicentennial
Prime Minister Narendra Modi pens an op-ed in The New York Times, calling Gandhi as ‘best teacher’ and announces the ‘Einstein Challenge’ IANS, NEW DELHI
I
ndia remembered the father of the nation on his sesquicentennial on Wednesday with various events and ‘padyatras’, even as the day saw the BJP and the Congress trying to claim the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi in their tributes to him. Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the nation in paying tribute to Gandhi, with an early morning visit to Raj Ghat. Later, Congress interim President Sonia Gandhi and President Ram Nath Kovind, and Vice President Venkaiah Naidu followed in offering their respects at the samadhi. Modi visited Sabarmati Ashram in Gujarat where he said Gandhi’s teachings offer solutions to any problem the world faces. Sonia Gandhi while addressing party members outside Mahatma Gandhi’s memorial Rajghat here, targeted the BJP, saying the country is being taken towards their “own direction” in the name of Mahatma Gandhi even though “those doing politics of falsehood will not understand” what he preached. Sonia Gandhi said Mahatma
Modi proposes ‘Einstein Challenge’ as tribute NEW DELHI: In a tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on his 150th birth anniversary, Prime Minister Narendra Modi penned an op-ed piece in The New York Times, calling Gandhi as the “best teacher” and proposed an “Einstein Challenge”. Enumerating his government’s work in the field of sanitation, eliminating poverty and renewable energy, Modi invited thinkers, entrepreneurs and tech leaders to be at the forefront of spreading Gandhi’s ideas through innovation, as part of the “Einstein Challenge”. We know Albert Einstein’s famous words on Gandhi: “Generations to come will scarce believe that such a one as this ever in flesh and blood walked upon this earth.”
Gandhi is the symbol of India “but those who want RSS to become India’s symbol will not understand what Gandhiji thought about multiculturalism.” Her daughter
“How do we ensure the ideals of Gandhi are remembered by future generations? I invite thinkers, entrepreneurs and tech leaders to be at the forefront of spreading Gandhi’s ideas through innovation. “Let us work shoulder to shoulder to make our world prosperous and free from hate, violence and suffering. That is when we will fulfil Mahatma Gandhi’s dream, summed up in his favorite hymn, ‘Vaishnava Jana To’, which said that a true human is one who feels the pain of others, removes misery and is never arrogant,” Modi said. “The world bows to you, beloved Bapu!” said Modi in the piece titled, ‘Why India and the world need Gandhi’. —IANS

principles of ‘Satya and Ahimsa’ of Gandhiji. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and others led padyatras in different parts of the country to mark the 150th birth anniversary of Gandhi. Various programmes were conducted in different parts of the country including in West Bengal, Odisha and Tripura. Himachal Pradesh launched a scheme to buy back non-recyclable, single-use plastic waste with a minimum support price of Rs 75 per kg. As a mark of respect to Gandhi, Goa discontinued the practice of bursting firecrackers during Gandhi Jayanti celebrations observing that Gandhi was a true environmentalist while the Rajasthan government announced a ban on the use of pan masala. Besides BJP and Congress, other parties also paid homage to the father of the nation. AAP leader
and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal with his deputy Manish Sisodia paid tributes to Gandhi at his ‘samadhi’. Former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav led his party leaders and workers to the Gandhi statue at the GPO Park in Lucknow and offered floral tributes to the Mahatma. Among others, the Delhi Police adopted ‘Gandhigiri’ to convince the shoppers to say no to plastic bags and replace plastic bags with jute bags free of cost. Secretary-General of UN Antonio Guterres also remembered Mahatma Gandhi saying that the leader pioneered successive nonviolent movements that changed history whereas The Ahimsa dialogue, held at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, commemorates the International Day of Non-Violence on October 2.
Gandhi honored at UN as climate action pioneer ARUL LOUIS, UNITED NATIONS
T
he United Nations celebrated the International Day of Non-Violence with tributes to Mahatma Gandhi as the pioneer in climate action, whose ideas can guide the world to protect the environment. General Assembly President Tijjani Muhammad-Bande said on Wednesday that long before the world became aware of the dangers of climate change and the risks to the environment, Gandhi was already involved in climate action. He said it is “stunning” how Gandhi described the duty to the environment with these words, “The earth, the air, the land and the water are not an inheritance from our forefathers but on loan

from our children.” Muhammad-Bande was speaking at an event, “Climate Action: Gandhian Ways,” to commemorate the UN’s International Day of Non-Violence, which is observed on Gandhi Jayanti. “For the United Nations,
almost everything that is fundamental that we stand for has prefigured in the work, life and thought of Gandhi,” he said. For the UN, “there is no greater hero than one who says no to violence,” he added. The president of the UN Eco-
nomic and Social Council (ECOSOC), Moha Juul, said the world should heed the words of Gandhi who looked at the world from the view of the poor. India’s Permanent Representative Syed Akbaruddin said, “In keeping with our times, we have ventured to link the notion of non-violence to our approach to our environment. A non-violent approach to our natural habitat has, for long, been neglected. Yet increasingly, environment and non-violence are now seen as a good fit.” He added, “Mahatma Gandhi is known primarily for his advocacy of non-violence in the cause of political freedom. Yet, remarkably almost a century ago, in Mahatma Gandhi’s thinking, the principle of non-violence extended not just
to fellow human beings, but to all beings.” University of Notre Dame Professor David Cortright spoke of the relevance of Gandhi in bringing peace to Kashmir. He said, “Today there is renewed discontent and a risk of violence. But this must be avoided as Gandhi would insist. The only path to a just settlement is only through non-violent democratic means.” Speaking on behalf of the US, Courtney Nemroff recalled Albert Einstein’s tribute to Gandhi, “Generations to come will scarce believe that such a one as this ever in flesh and blood walked upon this earth,” and said that as democracies, India and the US had a duty to see that the message of Gandhi lives on.

Sex Talkies: Bedroom issues hit the big screen

Filmmakers are adding humor to make such stories lighter for wider consumption
SUGANDHA RAWAL, NEW DELHI
B
ollywood has aced the art of uncovering societal issues, and is now mastering the art of taking the audience between the sheets with its stories, being driven by stars like Ayushmann Khurrana, Sonakshi Sinha and Rajkummar Rao. What ties Vicky Donor, Shubh Mangal Saavdhan, Lust Stories, Khandaani Shafakhana or Rajkummar’s upcoming Made In China? It is the presence of sex — which is not used as a tool for titillation anymore, but woven into the storyline to take forward the plot. Sex is no longer a hush-hush

MUMBAI: Actor Tiger Shroff, who is gearing up for the release of War, is not worried that his upcoming action drama clashes with Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy at boxoffice on October 2. He said that nowadays there is a market for every kind of film, adding that he is a big fan of Amitabh Bachchan and Chiranjeevi who spearhead the cast of that multilingual film. “I am big fan of both of them (Amitabh Bachchan and Choranjeevi). Nowadays, I feel that there is a market for every film so, I think every films should do good business, and I wish them all the best,” said Tiger, while interacting with the media at India’s biggest tricking championship organised by Fly Zone Fitness on Sunday in Mumbai. “War” is Yash Raj Films’ new biggie starring hrithik Rishan along with Tiger and Vaani Kapoor. “I am excited and nervous before the release of the film. Actually yesterday, I watched the film for the first time. It was a family screening so, my family, Hrithik (Roshan) sir’s family, (producer) Aditya (Chopra) sir’s family and (director) Siddharth (Anand) sir’s family watched the film together. I really had fun watching the film and I think it will be a treat for audience on October,” said Tiger. —IANS
subject, and that is one of the main reasons behind the increasing visibility of such subjects. “The Internet revolution and convergence has brought this revolution. Indians are now exposed to world cinema at the click of a button. It was never the case before. Before Internet, everything was controlled by the censor board, and because there was so much of hush-hush element around it, it was specifically used in films to promote them,” SMM Ausaja, a film historian, told IANS. “That’s why we had so many Bgrade movies, where people were assured of titillation. This can’t be the case now. You can’t use sex as an element to bring the audience
string of Bollywood celebrities such as Rishi Kapoor, Madhuri Dixit Nene and Ajay Devgn have mourned the death of veteran actor Viju Khote, who passed away aged 78. Here’s what the celebrities had to say: Rishi Kapoor: RIP. Viju Khote. Dear friend over the years. Though much elder,we used to bike together along with sister Shobha Khote ji,when I was young. into the theatre. You need to integrate it in the story, and it should seem natural,” he added. There was a time when Bollywood films were laced with provocative steps and suggestive lyrics, with actresses in skimpy clothes and extra focus on the cleavage, thighs or waist as an attempt to add oomph. Some resorted to showing the woman in a wet sari, or stretching a simple lip lock scene. Not to forget the visual metaphors denoting physical intimacy between hero and heroine — be it the brushing of flowers or dimming of lights. Bollywood’s affair with sex has evolved. It has become mature and meaningful.

‘Bard Of Blood’ review: Bard to worse Film: Bard Of Blood; Cast: Emraan Hashmi, Shobhita Dhulipala, Vineet Kumar Singh; Direction: Ribhu Sengupta; Rating: * * (two stars)
T
errorism is a terrible tragedy. Reducing terrorism to a formula-for-thrills situation is a worst tragedy. Lately we have seen many laments on global terrorism in the movies and on the OTT platform. Some like the recent The Family Man blended the personal and global crises in a palatable fusion. Bard Of Blood is, how do I put this politely, a mess. A self-important posturing piece on holier-thanthou patriotism filled with anxious

jingoism that reminded me of the bogus self-righteousness of the Sean Penn fiasco epic film “The Last Face” where goodlooking actors ran around in starched fatigues trying to save Africa.
Bard Of Blood is even more ambitious than Penn’s film. It wants to save the world when it can’t save even its own edified ambitions from sinking into a sanctimonious abyss. The actors are partly to blame.
While Hashmi tries to remain calm and grapples manfully with militancy and Shakespeare, his other two comrades in arms, played by Vineet Kumar Singh and Shobhita Dhulipala) run around with guns far more sophisticated than the series. The problem here is one of narrative cramps. The writing suffers from a sense of self-importance that the direction fails to justify. Not one incident in the plot is unpredictable. The script scoops up the HashmiDhulipala-Vineet Kumar trio and sets up a road to perdition that involves Pakistani terrorists with peculiar accents that need more urgent decoding than those cryptic messages from across the border that are supposed make or break Indian intelligence. — Subhash K. I am putting a board and roaming that I am single and searching for someone. Everyone thinks that there is a big line of people behind me and I must be in full tension,” she said. The Marjaavaa” actress said she always was clear in her mind that she would complete a minimum amount of education before she ventured into acting. “I was 18 when I did my first Kannada movie. It came my way and I did it, but back then my priority was studies. If anyone asked, (I said) I need to have minimum of graduation because if films don’t work, I need something where I can go,” she recalled.

Vizag Test: Mayank hits maiden double as India continue dominance Rohit and Mayank added 317 runs for the opening wicket
IANS, VISAKHAPATNAM
M
ayank Agarwal scored his first Test hundred and went on to convert that into a double ton as India dominated Day 2 of the first Test against South Africa in Visakhapatnam on Thursday. Mayank first put up a mammoth 317-run opening stand with Rohit Sharma before managing 50-plus stands with Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane. His individual score of 215 is thus far the highest score by any batsman in Test cricket this year, surpassing Australian star Steve Smith's 211 which he scored in the fourth Ashes Test in Manchester in September. The other players who have managed double hundreds this year are Jason Holder (202 n.o.), Kane Williamson (200 n.o.)
Brief scores:

and Ross Taylor (200). Mayank is only the fourth Indian batsman after Dilip Sardesai, Vinod Kambli and Karun Nair to have managed to convert his maiden century into a double-century.
He may have surpassed Smith's highest score but it will take some remarkable consistency for him, or anyone among the Indian players to topple the former Australian captain from the top of the list of
highest run scorers in the longest format of the game this year. Mayank with 372 runs in four innings at a remarkable average of 62 is 12th on the list. Smith, on the other hand, has played the same number of innings as Agarwal but with 774 runs at a mind numbing average of 110.57, is a fair distance away from the rest of the chasing pack. Earlier, at Tea, India’s score read 450/5, with Ravindra Jadeja batting on 6 and Hanuma Vihari batting on 8. Mayank Agarwal was dismissed just before the tea break for 215. His 371-ball knock consisted of 23 boundaries and six sixes. While Vernon Philander dismissed Cheteshwar Pujara for 6 -once again the ball beating the edge of the bat to rattle the stumps -- Senuran Muthusamy dismissed
Andy Murray enters French Open: Indian Shuttlers handed draw China Open quarterfinals PARIS: Indian shuttlers were handed tough draws at the French Open World Tour Super 750 tournament, starting in Paris on October 22. World champion P.V. Sindhu has been pitted against Michelle Li while former winner Kidambi Srikanth will open against world no 2 Chou Tien Chen of Chinese Taipei. Since winning the World Championships in Basel, Sindhu has made early exits from China and Korea last month, dropping a place to sixth spot in the rankings too. The top shuttler has a 5-2 head to head tally against Michelle but the world no. 9 Canadian would be a handful for the ace Indian. Srikanth won the title in 2017 but will take on Tien Chen who has defeated him thrice in the last three meetings. Former Commonwealth Games champion Parupalli Kashyap, who jumped to the world no 25 will square off against Hong Kong’s Ng Ka Long Angus. In women’s singles, Saina Nehwal will face Hong Kong’s Cheung Ngan Yi in the first round while World Championships bronze medallist B Sai Praneeth will take on veteran Lin Dan in the opening round. skipper Virat Kohli for 20. Test deputy Ajinkya Rahane was dismissed by Keshav Maharaj caught by Temba Bavuma for 15. But the most unfortunate of the lot had to be Mayank as he hit a full toss from Dean Elgar straight to Dane Piedt at the mid-wicket boundary to be dismissed against the run of play. Interestingly, Rahane’s dismissal saw India promote Ravindra Jadeja over Hanuma Vihari as Kohli and boys made their intentions very clear. They want to score quick runs and push for a declaration. Rohit, who had scored his first Test ton as opener, started from where he left on Wednesday. The duo became the third Indian opening pair to stitch a 300-run partnership, before Rohit lost his wicket to Keshav Maharaj, stumped by Quinton de Kock.
Parupalli Kashyap breaks into top 25 NEW DELHI: Former Commonwealth Games champion Parupalli Kashyap broke into the top 25 in the latest BWF rankings while World champion P V Parupalli Kashyap Sindhu dropped a rung to the sixth spot. Kashyap reached the semi-final at last week’s Korea Open Super 500 tournament and therefore jumped five places to reach the world no 25 spot. —IANS
‘Kapil didn’t need to resign as CAC chief’ BAIDURJO BHOSE, NEW DELHI
C
ricket Advisory Committee (CAC) chief Kapil Dev might have resigned from his position this week, but Committee of Administrators (CoA) chief Vinod Rai has made it clear that Kapil didn’t need to tender a resignation as his appointment was specific to the selection of the head coach of the Indian team. Speaking to IANS, Rai said that the letter given to the trio clearly said that it was an appointment for the selection of the head coach and not an annual one. “No, the resignation wasn’t

required because in the original appointment letter given to them (Kapil, Anshuman Gaekwad and Shantha Rangaswamy) it was said that it was specific to that selection
(appointment of head coach) only,” he said. Asked if that meant the conflict issue is a closed chapter, Rai refused to get into the matter. “Like I said before also, I would not like to prejudge the decision of the Ethics Officer,” he said. But a senior BCCI functionary said that it was indeed a closed chapter just like the matter against Sachin Tendulkar was dropped. The former Indian captain’s decision to resign from the CAC comes after Ethics Officer D.K. Jain sent a notice to the panel with regards to allegations of conflict of interest as claimed by MPCA life member Sanjeev Gupta.

Mayor Lori Lightfoot Issued a Proclamation Declaring Oct 2nd Mahatma Gandhi Day in the City of Chicago
BY A STAFF WRITER CHICAGO,IL- On September 27th, Mayor Lori Lightfoot issued a Proclamation declaring October 2, 2019 Mahatma Gandhi Day in the City of Chicago, at an event hosted by the Delhi Committee of the Chicago Sister Cities in partnership with World Business Chicago. The luncheon was held in honor of Mahatma Gandhi’s 150th Birth Anniversary. Smita N. Shah, Chairman of the Delhi Committee, introduced honored guests, United States Senator Richard J. Durbin and Chicago Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot. Also present were four Consul Generals from India, Sudhakar Dalela, Consul General of South Africa Phumzile Mazibuko, Consul General of the United Kingdom John Saville, and Honorary Consul General of Nepal, Marvin Brustin. Other notable guests were Niranjan S. Shah, Vijay Dave, Maarten de Jeu, Babu Patel, Keerthi Kumar Ravoori, and Nick Patel. “Chicago has a unique history with India, from the Parliament of World Religions in 1893, when Swami Vivekananda came and spoke of the universal unity of religion,” said Smita Shah, chairman of the Delhi Committee. “It is fitting that Chicago is among the first to recognize Mahatma Gandhi’s 150th birth Anniversary.” “Chicago and the Delhi Committee is one of the first to have an annual Mahatma Gandhi celebration,” commented Andrea Zopp, former Deputy Mayor and CEO of World Business Chicago. “This is unique, and we are honored to do it.” “The Delhi Committee of Chicago Sister Cities promotes cultural, social and economic exchange between the citizens of Chicago and the citizens of India,” said Smita N. Shah. “We honor Gandhi today, because it is such a significant example of the value of global exchanges.” Senator Durbin explained how Mahatma Gandhi “was inspired by American philosopher Henry David Thoreau, in the concept of civil disobedience. In return, he inspired many world leaders, including Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King,” said Senator Durbin. “We can all have an impact on improving lives by working together.” Senator Durbin also spoke of the importance of immigrants in this country. “Immigrants in this country have made a tremendous contribution,” Senator Durbin noted. “This Senator believes in immigration. This Senator stands by the communities of the City of Chicago.”
(L-R) Consul General, Mrs. Pratima N. Shah, First Lady of Chicago, Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot, Smita N. Shah, Niranjan Shah, & Dr. Vijay Dave
Delhi Chairman Smita Shah, in introducing Mayor Lightfoot, noted that “Gandhi’s fight for independence included a desire to fight poverty, create social economic opportunity for citizens and to ensure the preservation of human dignity,” Mayor Lightfoot gave a moving and impassioned speech about Mahatma Gandhi and his contributions, and how we all can learn from him. “Poverty is the worst form of violence,” she quoted Gandhiji. “We must do better for all of our communities. We must do better for our immigrant communities.” Smita N. Shah noted, “I see Mayor Lightfoot in that same fight for human dignity for all. Mayor Lightfoot reminds our community and the citizens of this City that strength and conviction belongs to everyone, and that we need to do well for each member of our city. That we can not be successful unless each neighborhood and community has an opportunity for education and economic opportunity.” “This is about human dignity,” said Mayor Lightfoot. “We are going to give all people, in every community, especially the neediest and including the immigrant community, their dignity.” Excerpts from Proclamation, full image follows below: “Whereas October 2, 2019 marks the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the

birth of Mahatma Gandhi; and “Whereas, Gandhi is revered the world over for his nonviolent philosophy of passive resistance and as an advocate for all people, including the poor and disenfranchised, championing the causes of education, economic opportunity, and equality amongst all; and “Whereas Gandhi is often named among the 20th century’s most important figures… “Whereas, founded in 2014 by the
Delhi Committee of Chicago Sister Cities International, under the leadership of Smita Shah, the Annual Legacy of Mahatma Gandhi Luncheon honors Gandhi’s lasting contributions and inspires us all to follow the example left by him: “Now, THEREFORE, I, LORI E. LIGHTFOOT, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF CHICAGO, do hereby proclaim October 2, 2019 to be MAHATMA GANDHI DAY IN CHICAGO, in recognition of the important legacy of Mahatma Gandhi.”
