US NEWS

Trump defends Syria pullout The decision draws wide criticism by lawmakers from both parties IANS, WASHINGTON

Lawmakers warned about a resurgence of the Islamic State and a humanitarian crisis for the Syrian Kurds.

U

S President Donald Trump highlighted USTurkey relations amid broad criticism against his decision to withdraw US troops from northern Syria where Turkish offensive has been underway. “So many people conveniently forget that Turkey is a big trading partner of the United States, in fact they make the structural steel frame for our F-35 Fighter Jet,” Trump said in a tweet. Turkey, however, has been removed from the F-35 program this July as a result of receiving the Russian S-400 missile system, Xinhua news agency reported. “Also remember, and importantly, that Turkey is an important member in good standing of NATO,” he added. Trump also announced that his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan would visit the United States next month. About 50 US military personnel stationed in the border area in northern Syria would be redeployed within Syria, a senior official of the Trump administration said.

Trump’s latest decision on Syria has drawn wide criticism by lawmakers from both parties, who warned about a resurgence of the

Islamic State and a humanitarian crisis for the Syrian Kurds following the Turkish incursion. In a move to alleviate criticism,

Trump wrote in the following tweet that Washington would not abandon the Syrian Kurds, an ally in the anti-IS campaign.

“We may be in the process of leaving Syria, but in no way have we Abandoned the Kurds, who are special people and wonderful fighters,” he noted, adding “We are helping the Kurds financially/weapons!” He also warned Ankara that “any unforced or unnecessary fighting by Turkey will be devastating to their economy and to their very fragile currency.” Turkey’s Defense Ministry said on Tuesday that its military had completed all preparations for a military operation in the east of Euphrates River in Syria to establish a safe zone. Syria’s Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad said on the same day that the Syrian government will defend all Syrian areas and will not accept any form of occupation by foreign forces.

Preparations complete for US blacklists 28 Chinese entities Syria operation: Turkey IANS, WASHINGTON

ANKARA: Turkey’s Ministry of Defence said all preparations for a military operation against the Syrian Kurdish PYG/YPG forces in northern Syria were complete and the Armed Forces would not tolerate a terror corridor along its border. “Establishment of a safe zone/a peace corridor is necessary for giving a safe life to Syrians by contributing to the peace and stability of our region,” a statement on the ministry’s Twitter account said on Monday, Efe news reported. The Hurriyet daily cited a security official as saying: “Preparations are complete including the smallest details. “Armed Forces are ready to go as soon as the political authority gives the order.” Turkish news channels reported that troops along the Syria border were being reinforced with tanks and armored vehicles on Monday night. There were also reports in Turkish media citing local sources in Syria as saying that Turkish military had started shelling YPG positions in northern al-Malikiyah town. Erdogan and US President Donald Trump spoke on the phone on Sunday, with Washington saying Turkey would go ahead with “its longplanned operation into northern Syria.” The operation would be Turkey’s third big military operation against Kurdish militia groups in northern Syria since 2016. While Turkey has said it is preparing to go into Syria, the United States has said it will be pulling out troops from the area. The White House also said that Turkey would now be responsible for all Islamic State fighters in the area captured over the past two years in the wake of the defeat of the so-called caliphate by the Unit—IANS ed States.

he US has added 28 Chinese entities to an export blacklist, citing their role in Beijing’s repression of Muslim minorities in Xinjiang, just days before high-level trade talks were slated to resume in Washington. Targets of the action by the Commerce Department on Monday include video-surveillance and facial-recognition giants Hangzhou Hikvision Digital Technology, Megvii Technology Inc. and SenseTime Group Ltd, Efe news reported. The Department’s decision to put the firms to its “entity list” alongside telecommunications giant Huawei Technologies Co., which was added in May, means suppliers will be barred from providing technology that originates in the US to the Chinese firms without a license. The newly identified entities “have been implicated in human rights violations and abuses in the implementation of China’s campaign of repression, mass arbitrary detention, and high-technology surveillance against Uighurs, Kazakhs, and other members of Muslim minority groups” in Xinjiang region, the Department said in a

statement. A spokesman said the move was unrelated to the trade negotiations. Western scholars estimate more than one million Turkic Uighurs and other Muslim minorities have been arbitrarily detained in China’s Xinjiang region in the past few years. The US will also add the Xinjiang Public Security Bureau and 19 subordinate entities to the entity list, along with Chinese firms Dahua Technology Co., IFLYTEK, Xiamen Meiya Pico Information Co., Yitu Technologies and Yixin Science & Technology Co., the Department statement added.

The new policy will take effect later this week. Deputy-level US and Chinese officials began in Washington, followed by talks between Trump’s top negotiators, US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, and China’s top trade envoy, Liu He, beginning Thursday. Negotiations between the two countries for a sweeping trade deal hit an impasse in early May; while talks have continued, little progress has been made toward an accord, and most observers have narrowed their expectations of what negotiators may be able to achieve.

Chinese premier arrives in India Kashmir, Article 370, not to figure in Narendra Modi-Xi Jinping talks IANS, NEW DELHI

K

ashmir, and India’s revocation of Article 370, would not be discussed during the second informal summit between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as these relate to the Indian Constitution, and are a part of India’s “sovereign function”, sources said here. As President Xi and PM Modi were set to meet in the seaside town of Mahabalipuram on October 1112 for the second informal summit, sources made clear that Kashmir and Article 370 would not be discussed between the two leaders.

IN BRIEF DA raise to benefit 50 lakh govt workers NEW DELHI: Adding to the festive cheer for over 1 crore government employees and pensioners, the Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved a 5 per cent hike in dearness allowance (DA) raising it to 17 per cent. Addressing the media after the cabinet meeting, Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Prakash Javadekar said that around 50 lakh central government employees and 62 lakh pensioners would benefit from the decision. Javadekar noted that previously DA had been raised by 2-3 per cent but this time it has been raised by 5 per cent in one go. The raise in DA would cost the government Rs 16,000 crore in its wage bill.

Another Pak drone over Indian territory CHANDIGARH: Security forces have spotted another Pakistani drone flying over Indian territory close to the Hussainiwala border in Punjab’s Ferozepur district. The police have intensified their search operation after the Border Security Force informed about the drone’s sighting. Punjab Police has already launched elaborate investigations to account for the weapons consignments apparently smuggled into India from across the border by the two drones recovered near the Indo-Pakistan border over the last around one month. —IANS

“India has made its position very clear (on Article 370), that it relates to the Indian Constitution, which is a sovereign function. And thus the issue of discussion on it does not arise,” sources said here. “In case President Xi wants to understand the issue, then we will explain it,” the sources added. On the issue of the creation of a Union Territory of Ladakh, following revocation of Article 370 and to which China had objected, the sources added that the step was taken in keeping with the demands of the local populace for more development and rights. China has been explained India’s position that it does not alter the

external boundary, the sources added. The fact that Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan is on a visit to China currently “is of no concern” to India, the sources added. “It is between China and Pakistan, and is of no concern to us,” the sources added. Ahead of Xi’s India visit for the informal summit, Beijing on Tuesday had moderated its stand on Kashmir, saying the issue should be resolved between India and Pakistan through dialogue and consultation. Khan’s ongoing visit and whether the Kashmir issue would figure during talks, said in Beijing: “China’s position on Kashmir issue is clear and consistent. “We call on India and Pakistan

to engage in dialogue and consultation on all issues including Kashmir issue and consolidate mutual trust. This is in line with the interest of both countries and common aspiration of the world.”

Congress should decide what to be criticized: Shah IANS, KAITHAL (HARYANA)

U

nion Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday said the Congress should ponder over what “needs to be criticised and what not”. Addressing his first election rally here for the October 21 election for Haryana Assembly, Shah ridiculed the criticism of the Congress over ‘Shash-

tra Pujan’ or worship of weapons of the first Rafale fighter jet by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in France a day earlier. “Is Shashtra Pujan not performed on Vijayadashami? The FTA sent information on around 3.1 million financial accounts to the partner states and received information on around 2.4 million from them. The largest exchange was with Germany (in both directions), as was the case in the previous year. The FTA cannot provide any information on the amount of financial assets. Switzerland has committed itself to adopting the global standard for the international automatic exchange of information in tax matters. The legal basis for the implementation of the AEOI in Switzerland came into force on January 1, 2017. The Home Minister said, “Our jawans carried out a surgical strike in Balakot, killed Pakistani terrorists and came back without a single jawan of ours being harmed. They took revenge for those jawans who had sacrificed their lives.” He said whenever a government was formed in Haryana, it was focused for a special caste. "But for Manohar Lal Khattar there is no caste, this government is for everyone in Haryana. Modi came here and appealed for 'Beti Padhao, Beti Bachao' should become the slogan of Haryana. ‘Rafale possible due to Modi’ Rajnath Singh took off for the 30-minute sortie after completing Shastra Puja

D

efense Minister Rajnath Singh said in France on Tuesday that the Rafale deal was possible due to the decisiveness of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Rajnath was speaking soon after he completed a 30-minute sortie on a twin-seater trainer version of the Rafale fighter aircraft. The multirole combat aircraft, flown by Phillipe Duchateau, the chief test pilot of Dassault Avia-

tion, manufacturer of Rafale jets, took off from an airstrip near the facility of the Dassault Aviation at 7:24 p.m. IST. It landed back at the airstrip after completing a few manoeuvres at 7:54 p.m. IST. “The credit for India’s acquisition of the Rafale jets should go to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It was all due to his decisiveness. India will receive the first 18 Rafale jets by February 2021. By AprilMay 2022 we will receive all 36 jets,” Singh told media channels after completing the sortie.

US sanctions on Iran Central Bank ‘war crime’ TEHRAN: Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on Wednesday said the US move to impose sanctions on the Central Bank of Iran is a “war crime”. “The US administration’s decision to impose new sanctions on the Central Bank of Iran (CBI) is tantamount to a war crime, because it obstructs the purchase of medicines and foodstuff,” Zarif was quoted as saying by Tasnim news agency. “The US recent measures against Iran do not entail the conditions for the imposition of sanctions, but involves conditions for economic terrorism,” Zarif said at a conference on global economy and sanctions here. He added that the White House has built its economic war strategy

on the basis of violating international laws, Xinhua reported. As a move to heighten pressures on Iran following the US’ exit from the Iranian nuclear deal last year, US President Donald Trump’s administration recently imposed fresh sanctions on the CBI to further curtail Iran’s financial transactions with the international community.

The pilot Duchateau informed that the Rafale jet flew beyond supersonic speeds with Rajnath seated in the rear of the cockpit. The first jet was handed over to Rajnath by the French Defence Minister Florence Parly. “The combat capability of India definitely increases after the acquisition of the Rafale jet. But it is not from the perspective of attack. It is for self-defence,” added Rajnath. Rajnath took off for the 30minute sortie in Merignac soon after completing a Shastra Puja

PARIS: Defense Minister Rajnath Singh held discussions on a wide range of issues pertaining to India’s bilateral defence engagement with his French counterpart during his three-day visit to France. “Had fruitful deliberations with the French Minister of Armed Forces, Ms Florence Parly during the Annual Defence Dialogue in Paris. We assessed and reviewed the full spectrum of our bilateral defence engagement,” tweeted Rajnath on Wednesday.

Soon after receiving the first Rafale jet at Merignac on Tuesday, Rajnath had said that the handover is a new milestone in the IndoFrench strategic partnership and marks a new high in bilateral defence cooperation between the two countries. He had also paid tributes to former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and former French President Jacques Chirac for laying the foundation of the Indo-French strategic partnership. —IANS

after the first of the 36 Rafale jets was handed over to him on the occasion of Dussehra on Tuesday. The Shastra Puja (traditional weapon worship ceremony) was conducted by Rajnath upon the first Rafale jet before he flew on the sortie. Rajnath, who has been performing the Shastra Puja for the past several years in his personal capacity, inscribed the ‘Om’ symbol on the fuselage of the first Rafale jet with vermillion as part of the ceremony. Rajnath is on a three-day visit to France where he received the first Rafale combat aircraft in Merignac from a facility of Dassault Aviation earlier on Tuesday in the presence of the firm’s CEO Eric Trappier and the French Defence Minister Parly. Dressed in a G-suit and dark sunglasses, Rajnath took to the

cockpit of a twin-seater trainer version of the Rafale jet. He was helped with strapping on the security apparatus by officials of the Indian Air Force (IAF) who have accompanied him on the trip. He waved his right arm and showed the thumbs up sign before the canopy of the glass cockpit of the fighter jet shut down upon him. Rajnath had flown a sortie on India’s indigenously developed Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas from the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) airport in Bengaluru last month. India has entered into an intergovernmental agreement with France and Dassault to acquire 36 Rafale jets in flyaway condition at a cost of Rs 59,000 crore. The first four Rafale jets will arrive in India by May 2020.

B

ritish Prime Minister Boris Johnson will hold talks with his Irish counterpart Leo Varadkar later this week in a last ditch attempt to avoid a no-deal Brexit, a Downing Street spokesman said here on Tuesday. Johnson and the Irish prime minister spoke by telephone for about 40 minutes, the Xinhua news agency reported. “Both sides strongly reiterated their desire to reach a Brexit deal,” the spokesman said. “They hope to meet in person later this week.” The spokesman made the remarks as President of the European Parliament, David Sassoli, said there has been “no progress” following a meeting with the prime minister on Tuesday. “I came here in the confident hope of hearing proposals which

DC beatdown gets intense

The current whirligig comes 21 years after the last impeachment attempt against a sitting president - Bill Clinton IANS, WASHINGTON

W

ar it is said is a policy practiced by a sovereign state to outflank its enemy. However, in the ongoing Washington DC beatdown, President Donald Trump is the player who everyone is watching for his policy interventions, a flurry of counter punches, invasive and pollyannaish, with many here reckoning that they are koan zen ghosted with egregiousness extortionate to dominate a hyper connected world. From threats to Erdogan in Turkey to an immediate drawdown of troops from Syria, Trump has created a typical smoke and mirrors set behind him as the hounds go after him in the impeachment inquiry. The current whirligig comes 21 years after the last impeachment attempt against a sitting president Bill Clinton. The Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Acts of 1990 and 1993 increased taxes and limited government spending. These created a budget surplus and an expanded economy. Bill Clinton survived impeachment challenges because he delivered a Goldilocks economy, an analogy to the Goldilocks and three bears story, where the microwave was serving the porridge for one and all. The economic policies of Bill Clinton, referred to by some as Clintonomics. In proposing a plan to cut the deficit, Clinton submitted a budget and corresponding tax legislation overseeing a very robust econ-

omy during his tenure. The US had strong economic growth (around 4 per cent annually) and record job creation (22.7 million). As luck would have it, it was on this day 21 years earlier that the impeachment of Bill Clinton was initiated on October 8, 1998, when the United States House of Representatives voted to commence impeachment proceedings against Bill Clinton, 42nd president of the United States, for "high crimes and misdemeanors", which were subsequently detailed in two articles of impeachment. Wherever one goes in DC, a city

of intrigue in the normal course, there is heightened conversation over President Trump's impeachment process. On Dassehra day back home, tension and suspicion play out in equal parts as the White House blocked EU Ambassador Gordon Sondland's Ukraine deposition to Congress. Trump has refused to allow Sondland's testimony because he thinks it will be a kangaroo court which will take a view on the matter. Calling it strong evidence of obstruction, his rivals have been baying for his blood. Further, the plan not to reveal additional text

messages has come as a bigger damper. This came against the backdrop of the subpoena to Trump lawyer, former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, for Ukraine documents. Democrats have requested information from three Rudy Giuliani associates - Lev Parnas, a Ukrainian-American businessman who worked with Giuliani; Igor Fruman, a business partner of Parnas; and Semyon "Sam" Kislin, a former aide to Giuliani. Lawmakers are also warning they will subpoena the associates if they do not comply with their requests for documents and depositions.

And as if all this tension wasn't enough, Trump's decision to pull the plug on US forces in Syria blindsided the capital and all its players. Trump's growing aggression is seen typical of his persona as he now goes after ex-insider, veep Joe Biden. While Trump is cognisant of polls, impeachment is not a winner, the dynamic of change is rapidly taking root. On December 19, 1998, Clinton became the second American president to be impeached (the other being Andrew Johnson who was impeached in 1868), when the House formally adopted the articles of impeachment and forwarded them to the US Senate for adjudication. The trial in the Senate began in January 1999 with Chief Justice William Rehnquist presiding. On February 12, Clinton was acquitted on both counts as neither received the necessary twothirds majority vote of the senators present for conviction and removal from office - in this instance 67. On Article One, 45 senators voted to convict while 55 voted for acquittal. On Article Two, 50 senators voted to convict while 50 voted for acquittal. Consequently, Clinton remained in office for the balance of his second term. As Trump remains surrounded, Democrats were taken by surprise with key witness Sondland being pulled out as they believe that a massive cover up has been initiated. With sands shifting, punters still aver that Trump will survive this catechism.

Pelosi doesn’t back down, goes for the kill IANS, WASHINGTON

D

US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

ont dress betrayal as a favor for sorrows don’t come individually but in battalions is what a usually blasé but now besieged U S President Donald Trump must be thinking. Speaker of the House of Representatives and Donald Trump’s principal bete noire Nancy Pelosi is not lying down and rolling over in the joust with the President. In a scathing response to the White House press secretary statement, Pelosi strong armed a blistering broadside saying — Mr President, you are not above the law, you will be held accountable. It is clear that the determined Pelosi will not be taking any prisoners as she reacted with typical disdain on the stonewalling —

The White House should be warned that continued efforts to hide the truth of the President's abuse of power from the American people will be regarded as further evidence of obstruction. For Nancy Pelosi, there is only one bullet and the chamber as she pursues her quarry with relentless fury. However, news coming out of the White House is that the President is preparing for a legal war which means going to the courts in what is being described as an escalating skirmish of epic proportions. The blowback from both the Reps and Dems is severe and an attritional war is on the cards. It is also understood that Trump will not comply with this perceived inquisition.

But the ‘obstructionist' President hit back earlier through his personal counsel Pat Cipoilone who in a stinging denouement of the Dems‘ conduct stated — The Committees' inquiry also suffers from a separate, fatal defect. Despite Speaker Pelosi's commitment to "treat the President with fairness," the Committees have not established any procedures affording the President even the most basic protections demanded by due process under the Constitution and by fundamental fairness. The House's utter disregard for the established procedural safeguards followed in past impeachment inquiries shows that the current proceedings are nothing more than an unconstitutional exercise in political theater.

Mohammad Javad Zarif.

on the basis of violating international laws, Xinhua reported.

Johnson in talks to avoid no-deal Brexit IANS, LONDON

B

ritish Prime Minister Boris Johnson will hold talks with his Irish counterpart Leo Varadkar later this week in a last ditch attempt to avoid a no-deal Brexit, a Downing Street spokesman said here on Tuesday. “I came here in the confident hope of hearing proposals which

could take negotiations forward,” he said. “However, I must note that there has been no progress” toward agreeing a new deal between Britain and the European Union ahead of the Oct. 31 deadline.

Sassoli told Sky News that Johnson said to him that he “will not ask for an extension.” Johnson vowed to take his country out of the European Union on Oct. 31, with or without a deal.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis with Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray. (File photo: IANS)

Rebels keep parties on tenterhooks in Maharashtra QUAID NAJMI, MUMBAI

A

ll political parties, especially the ruling Bharatiya Janata PartyShiv Sena, in Maharashtra are on tenterhooks as sheer rebellion could sour prospects of official candidates in many constituencies in the October 21 elections for 288 Assembly constituencies. While some parties tried to wish them away with ‘saam or daam’, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis displayed an iron fist by threatening to invoke ‘dand or bhed’, warning that if the rebels failed to withdraw from the fray, “they would be shown their place”. But many remain unfazed... Besides the BJP-Sena, even the Opposition Congress-Nationalist Congress Party are wracking their brains on how to mollify the ‘traitors’ who could act as doubleedged swords for all sides. On one hand, rebels could mar the prospects of the official candidates or benefit the opponents, there was also a possibility in some cases that they could be the darkhorse winners, depending on their own standing in various constituencies. The BJP-Sena was earlier besieged by an army of 110 rebels in over 27 constituencies besides the Congress-NCP in around 20 seats, and in some half a dozen seats the official alliances are even fighting against each other..! Today, the BJP-Sena still face rebels in at least 30 seats, and the Congress-NCP have sought to exploit its discomfiture by backing them!

Uddhav praises Amit Shah for axing Article 370 MUMBAI: Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray on Tuesday lavished praises on Union Home Minister and Bharatiya Janata Party President Amit Shah for the decision to abrogate the Constitution’s Article 370 which gave special status to Jammu & Kashmir. Addressing his customary annual Dussehra Rally, he described Shah as “a person who lives up to his words” and said the scrapping of Article 370 was a dream of the party’s founder, the later Balasaheb Thackeray. “Amitbhai does what he says. By scrapping Article 370, the dream of Balasaheb Thackeray has been fulfilled. Now we want the Uniform Civil Code,” Thackeray said.

In some constituencies, the Opposition has arrived at convenient but unofficial understandings with Raj Thackeray’s Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) whose candidates could chip away at the votes of the BJP-Sena nominees. Top leaders of both alliances worked out face-saving formulae to quell the rebels, in some cases luring them with attractive bargains, and in others, the rebels offering to ‘return’ to the parent party fold after victory in return for plum cabinet posts. For the ruling alliance, its an uphill task as it has to satisfy the demands from the flood of newcomers into their parties, mostly

Greeting people on the occasion of Dassehra, he said that this day is celebrated for Lord Ram killing the demon king Ravana. “This means Lord Ram existed. So it is our demand that a temple of Lord Ram should come up in his birthplace, Ayodhya. We are not seeking votes in the name of the temple, but because it is the desire of all countrymen and the Hindus,” Thackeray said at Shivaji Park. Dismissing allegations from some quarters that the Sena had “compromised” and “bent” in the seat-sharing with BJP, the Sena chief said that the alliance was for Hindutva, and such adjustments are a part and parcel of any alliance. —IANS

from the NCP or Congress against their own contenders for tickets. A small but crucial partner in the ruling alliance, Rashtriya Samaj Paksha, headed by Minister Mahadev Jankar is quite cheesed off with the BJP on various counts and may consider quitting the ‘Maha-Yuti’. For starters, the BJP denied to allot 10 seats and the RSP reluctantly settled for two - Jintur and Daund and now the BJP has field its own candidates here also. Enjoying a good support base among the Dhangar community, the RSP will take a call shortly on whether to remain with the ruling alliance or not.

While rebels could mar the prospects of the official candidates, they could be the dark-horse winners too

My government is stable: Goa CM PANAJI: Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has reiterated that his government was stable, saying only the opposition MLAs who were Pramod Sawant jealous of the “good work” were questioning the ruling dispensation’s stability. “This government will complete its tenure. I am confident of that. I have a team of 27 BJP MLAs and three independent MLAs supporting us. I have faith in them. The people of Goa like the work that the government is doing,” Sawant told reporters here. “Me and my Ministers are doing a good job. Some people cannot stand that. That is why they always make these statements,” he added. The Chief Minister’s comments come at a time when opposition legislators have raised doubts about the ability of the BJP-led coalition government led by Sawant to perform and last its tenure. Sawant was sworn in a day after former Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar died in March this year. The term of the current government is scheduled to last till 2022. —IANS

Ready to defy diktats against threats of expulsion, many rebels openly question the wisdom of ignoring and marginalising party ‘loyalists’ in favour of rank newcomers crossing over from other parties

and warn that instead of strengthening, it was weakening the party. Hoping to keep ajar a window for post-poll ‘settings’, most rebels without a blink invoke the adage that they are not challenging the official party nominees but bowing to the wishes of the masses and attempting to uproot the sitting opposition legislators. In the current scenario, at least five sitting MLAs from the ruling side - Charan Waghmare, Narayan Pawar, Raju Todsam and Balasaheb Sanap (all BJP) and Shiv Sena’s Trupti Sawant are contesting as ‘independents’ against the official party candidates. In Muktainagar (Jalgaon), the BJP nominee Rohini Khadse daughter of sulking senior leader Eknath Khadse - is facing the ally Sena rebel Chandarkant Patil. The challenge became worse when the NCP withdrew its candidate Ravindra Patil and is now supporting the Sena rebel. A similar embarrassment is faced by Sena President Uddhav Thackeray on his home constituency - the prestigious Bandra East seat - where sitting Sena MLA Trupti Sawant is contesting as independent against Mumbai Mayor Vishwanath Mahadeshwar. Former Chief Minister Narayan Rane’s son - sitting Congress MLA Nitesh Rane, who recently defected to BJP - is facing a Sena rebel Satish Samant in Kankavali (Sindhudurg), where the Thackerays and Ranes are traditionally bitter rivals. With each critical in the final numbers game that may emerge, rebels could seriously mar the prospects of official candidates particularly in a multicornered scenario.

Have become thick-skinned about film reviews: Anil Kapoor The actor is surprised that Hollywood film ‘Joker’ also received few negative reviews

A

ctor Anil Kapoor, who is still going strong after four decades in Bollywood, has said that negative reviews used to affect him in his early days because his hard work would be ignored, but now he has become thick-skinned. Anil Kapoor addressed the media at the launch of Khalid Mohamed’s book “The Aladia Sisters” along with Karan Johar, Javed Akthar and Asha Parekh in Mumbai this week. Mohamed has worked as a journalist, editor, film critic, screenwriter and film director. On being asked if Mohamed’s film reviews hurt him, and if he could recall any of the critic’s caustic reviews, Kapoor said: “There

B-Town celebs greet fans on Dussehra MUMBAI: On the auspicious occasion of Dussehra, Bollywood stars such as Karan Johar, Ajay Devgn and Nimrat Kaur wished for love, light and happiness. Dussehra is celebrated annually across the country on the last day of Navratri and signifies the victory of good over evil. Here’s what they have tweeted: Karan Johar: #HappyDussehra to one and all! Sanjay took to Twitter on Monday and wrote: “Celebrating 20 Sanjay Dutt years of ‘Vaastav’, a film which gave me the real sense of being an actor.” “Vaastav” completed 20 years of its release in Hindi cinema on Monday. nately, the film was a huge success at the box-office.” “Beta”, released in 1992, became a blockbuster at the box-office, and many among the audience and the

trade alike had attributed the film’s success to its heroine Madhuri Dixit at the time. “The second film is ‘Lamhe’,” Kapoor continued, adding: “I think reviews of ‘Lamhe’ (1991) were quite devastating for Yash (Chopra) ji and for all of us because it impacted business of the film. I remember Khalid compared ‘Lamhe’ with Gulzar saab’s ‘Mausam’ (1975). But almost after 25 years, Khalid sent me a message saying that ‘I was wrong and it’s a very good film’. So sometimes it’s your state of mind. And at that time, you may not like the film but when you watch it again you might like it.” “Lamhe” was a dud at the boxoffice on release, but over time the film has been widely acclaimed as one of Kapoor’s best performances

ever and is counted among the late Yash Chopra’s best directorial efforts. Kapoor also added that he is surprised that the recently released Hollywood film “Joker” has got a few negative reviews. “I recently watched ‘Joker’, and although the film has received 99 per cent positive reviews, there are some reviews that are not very positive — which surprised me because I loved the film. So, these things keep happening. Obviously, now the time has passed, so I have become much more thick-skinned where reviews are concerned,” he said. Anil Kapoor will next be seen in Anees Bazmee’s “Pagalpanti”, Mohit Suri’s “Malang” and Karan Johar’s “Takht”.

it’s something I would love to see.” The “Baywatch” star made it clear she’s a serious contender and, when asked which actress she could see stepping into Daniel Craig’s shoes, she joked: “Me!” “I don’t know, I would just be very happy with the fact that it would be a woman,” the “Mary Kom” actress said. She added: “I definitely think (it’s time).” The shooting recently

wrapped on the 25th Bond movie titled “No Time To Die”, which is rumored to be Craig’s fifth and final outing in the role. Priyanka is gearing up for “The Sky Is Pink”, which is slated to hit the screens on October 11, which is about a couple that lose their daughter to pulmonary fibrosis, a serious immunity disease.

‘War’ could have been named ‘Bore’ easily S trictly speaking, “War” is not a film. It is a smart product manufactured to gyp you with hardsell, tempt you to splurge on the multiplex tickets in a festive season when the spirit of indulgence runs high. “War” was always about a catchy title, and about crafting a set of irresistible teasers that promised two of the industry’s hunkiest heroes in full-on action mode, at some of the most gorgeous locations across the planet. They spent hundreds of crores all of the above. Who needs an engaging story? I know what you are thinking. Commercial products as “War” are never meant to be about engaging story. Bollywood would rush to defend such ridiculous filmmaking as dutiful efforts to deliver ‘enter-

tainment, entertainment and entertainment’. The operative word used to defend such stuff is ‘timepass’. With “War”, however, that is precisely where things go all wrong. Despite the hype and hoopla it has

arrived with, there is very little entertainment in the film. Time simply doesn’t pass. “War” could have been named “Bore”. For obvious reasons of commerce, the saleable package is entirely set up around the film’s two heroes Hrithik Roshan and Tiger Shroff reducing everything and everyone else including heroine and villains to essential props. The script credited to Aditya Chopra and Siddharth Anand introduces Hrithik as a rogue agent named Kabir who, at the start of the

film, has apparently turned against the nation. He is assigned to eliminate a top terrorist, instead he guns down a high-ranking official of the Indian secret service. Kabir’s onetime protege Khalid (Tiger Shroff) takes on the mission to track him down, with orders to shoot him on sight. Much of the first half is wasted in establishing their back stories, serving up very little action, much lesser thriller quotient, and almost no plot progression that may catch you by surprise. The climax action is an outcome of a ludicrous plot twist, involving an outrageously unimaginative subtext about plastic surgery. Go for “War” only if you root for Hrithik and/or Tiger. — Vinayak Chakravorty

Salman threatened on Facebook

Dinklage I’ve learnt everything from Peter sets Emmy record my failures: Suniel A

A

ctor Suniel Shetty has seen ups and downs in his showbiz career. He says failure has taught him a lot. “When I started my career as an actor, I had no guidance from anyone. I have learnt everything from my failures. I was very happy when my first movie was successful. That success paired with my trained body allowed me to believe and dream that I would be the next Amitabh Bachchan in the industry. Unfortunately, it remained a distant dream,” said Suniel, who made his Bollywood debut with the 1992 movie Balwaan. “Moreover, I received a lot of criticism from people who told me that I cannot act and should go back to being a hotelier. I am glad that I took their criticism positively, moved past that and focused on what audience wanted me to do,” he added.

ollywood actor Salman Khan has been threatened with dire consequences in a social media post, written on the Facebook wall of Student Organization of Punjab University (Sopu), on September 16. The police have initiated investigation after the post went viral. The post, by Gairi Shooter has a crossed picture of Salman Khan, reads: “Salman, think, you can save yourself from Indian law, however, Vishnoi Samaj and Sopu Party has announced death sentence for you. You are an accused in Sopu’s court”. The post has appeared before Salman Khan’s scheduled hearing on September 27 in the blackbuck killing case.

egastar Amitabh Bachchan trolled actress Sonakshi Sinha for struggling to give the right answer to a question on the Ramayan during an episode of Kaun Banega Crorepati, the popular quiz show he hosts. Sonakshi was seen on the KBC hotseat with Rajasthani artisan Ruma Devi, facing show host Bachchan. He asks: “According to Ramayana, Hanuman fetched the Sanjeevani herb for whom?” Sonakshi is visibly confused and uses a lifeline. Big B could not stop himself from questioning Sonakshi, daughter of actor Shatrughan Sinha. Your father’s name is Shatrughan and you home is called Ramayan. Your uncles are all connected to the Ramayan. How do you not know that jadibooti was brought for?” he said.

According to tvline.com, Dinklage made Emmy Awards history after winning Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for the fourth time. He previously took home the same award in 2011, 2015 and 2018. He had until now shared the three-win record with Art Carney, Don Knotts and Aaron Paul. He won in Supporting Actor in a Drama Series category. "Thank you. I have no idea what I'm about to say, but here we go. ctress Shweta Tiwari, known for her telly-bahu stint on Kasautii Zindagii Kay and as a winning contestant of Bigg Boss, will return to the world of television after a gap of three years. Shweta will play a Punjabi character in Mere Dad Ki Dulhan, a coming-of-age story that will be aired on Sony Entertainment Television. “I am coming back on television screens after three years and I have selected Mere Dad Ki Dulhan as my comeback show because it is a very different character that I am portraying. It has a lot of emotions and is hilarious at the same time,” said Shweta. “My character of Guneet is a relatable one, as we find them everywhere. I love stepping into shoes of unique characters each time. For my look in the show, the makers did not want my long hair,” she added.

ollywood actor-singer Ayushmann Khurrana recently posted an Instagram message on the evergreen Lata Mangeshkar hit, Saawan ke jhoole pade from the 1979 Amitabh Bachchanstarrer Jurmana. “From her incredible repertoire of songs I think ‘Saawan ke jhoole pade’ is one of her finest,” opined Ayushmann. Incidentally, Mangeshkar has no recollection of this exquisite number but she is appreciative of Ayushmann’s praise. Opening up on Ayushmann, Mangeshkar told IANS: “I know he is a very good actor and an equally good singer, so his appreciation comes from a genuine understanding of music. I wish him well. ndiana Pacers beat Sacramento Kings 130-106 in the second pre-season friendly NBA game at Mumbai’s NSCI stadium on Saturday. The Pacers have thus won both the matches that were held here over the weekend. Unlike the first game, which ended 132-131 in the Pacers’ favour, the match on Saturday was a more straightforward affair. Alize Johnson was the top scorer for Pacers with 17 points. However, the star of the game for Pacers was Myles Turner who managed 12 points, three rebounds, two assists and five blocks. D.J. Warren started off with a two pointer for the Pacers but Marwin Bagley brought the Kings back into the game. The opening quarter was a close affair with both teams exchanging leads. The Kings maintained a 30-25 lead at the end of it. At the restart, the Pacers managed to level the score at 33-33 and

Kohli to play his 50th Test as Indian captain PUNE: India skipper Virat Kohli achieved another feat on Thursday when he leads his side against South Africa in the second Test of the three-match rubber at the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) Stadium here. It was the 50th time when Kohli captained the Indian team in the longest format of the game. Currently, the Indian run-machine is tied at the second spot with former skipper Sourav Ganguly (49 Tests) in the list of leading the national side. Kohli became become only the second Indian captain to the landmark of 50 Tests as captain, after M.S. Dhoni, who had led India 60 times in Tests between 2008-2014.

after that, there was no looking back for them. They managed to build an 11-point lead in the second quarter and maintained their distance throughout the match.

Although the Kings started the third quarter with two consecutive three-pointers, they looked hapless as the Pacers kept collecting the points. At the end of the third quarter, the

Pacers led 96-79. It was pretty much a continuation of the trend in the fourth quarter with Kings unsuccessfully trying to play catch-up and eventually conceding the match.

Indian American Grocery Giant Patel Brothers Opens its Second Largest Store in Niles

BY A STAFF WRITER NILES, IL- : For more than two hours enthusiastic shoppers waited in a serpentine line in the rain as Indian American grocery giant Patel Brothers’ newest 28,000 square feet store opened here on October 3. From a modest first 800 square feet outlet in Devon in 1974, which saw days when cash registers barely opened, Patel Brothers is now celebrating its 45 years in the business of catering to the growing and eclectic household needs of the large Indian American community in American 19 states. With more than 50 stores under its ownership, Patel Brothers has become an icon of the community’s remarkable trading success. It has consistently reported strong sales over the decades for the family-owned empire. The Patel family headed by the patriarch Mafat Patel has struck a balance between modernity of America and traditions of India. In keeping with that approach, priests from BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Temple, Bartlett, supervised a religious ceremony to mark the store’s opening at 9555 North Milwaukee Ave. Niles, IL 60714. An official release said over 1,200 people showed up to shop within minutes of the store’s opening. Mafat Patel, co-founder of the chain attributed it’s success to “the hard work and talent of the third generation of Patel family leaders in advancing the business and building the Indian grocery empire.” Patel Brothers was initially started by the Tulsibhai Patel, a hardworking but uneducated Indian businessman with a passion for his family and Indian values. “We have nothing but gratitude,” said Swetal Patel, vice president and company spokesperson who is Mafat Patel’s younger son. “With many choices out there for the consumer, they still have such loyalty. We are all so thankful.” The Mayor of Niles, Andrew Przybylo accompanied Mafat Patel in cutting the ribbon as shoppers eagerly waited to enter the new store. “We are truly a diverse community. We celebrate all cultures,” said Przybylo. “Patel Brothers stores offer everything from an on-site bakery and hot food items, a collection of exotic Indian vegetables found exclusively at their stores, massive variety Indian grains and frozen food items, to carefully curated selection of adjacent shops catering to the Indian community,” the release said. Over the last four and half decades the Patel family has mastered the craft of running a big box grocery store chain with its dedicated supply chains that ensure quality control. Rakesh Patel, Mafat Patel’s elder son

Niles mayor Andrew Przybylo cuts the ribbon with Mafat Patel and Tulsi Patel

and the brain behind locational and supply management, said, “This is how Indian grocery shopping should be. With plenty of room to move around comfortably.” He added that the new store is outfitted with an additional 12,000 square feet of space for storage on the second floor and a rear parking lot made with permeable pavement to reduce stormwater runoff.” “We know it’s a strong retail corner. Niles has a very ethnic and diverse offering, and this will only continue to add to those offerings, which will only help our very diverse population,” said Niles Economic Development Coordinator Ross Klicker. The new store is expected to bring significant tax revenues from food sales to the Village of Niles. The village imposes a 2.5 percent sales tax on all businesses selling food, and the boost from tax revenue to the village from the new store is yet to be fully realized. “This is a great use for the village. We’re very confident it’s going to be an outstanding location. It’ll be very successful for all parties involved,” Klicker said. Recently in an interview with Hi India Naperville Mayor Steve Chirico had expressed similar sentiments about Patel Brothers in Naperville. Patel Brothers also operate four other stores in Illinois with locations in Schaumburg, Hanover Park, West Rogers Park, and Naperville, their largest location. The Naperville location has transformed shopping habits of the Indian American and South Asian American community in the area. “Naperville, opened two years ago, is No. 1 in size, with more space, a

unique bakery, hot and cold sections, more parking,” Rakesh Patel was quoted as saying by The Chicago Tribune’s Louisa Chu. “Niles is No. 2 in size.” Chirico had said the presence of a big store like Patel Brothers in Naperville sent strong signals to other businesses that the city was on a strong economic footing. Patel Brothers in Niles is expected to do the same. The Patel family has ensured that their original store in Devon remains and retains all its early charms but at the same time built the largest Indian retail chain of its kind in America. Swetal Patel, younger brother to Rakesh, said, “This year, we’re celebrating 45 years in business. Nowadays the store footprints start at about 20,000 square feet. The store

that we’re in today is 28,000 square feet with a 12,000-square-foot second floor storage space.” With a median household income of over $100,000, the highest for any ethnic group, Indian Americans are picky but frequent shoppers. Patel Brothers has over the decades developed a keen sense of what they are looking for—fresh produce is often the most coveted item—and tailored their 57 stores accordingly. It is unclear whether the number of such large Indian American stores is reaching a saturation point in relation to the number of Indian American households but given the community’s spread and continued new arrivals there may be room for some more.

community news Daniel Epstein Runs for Illinois Supreme Court 4

FRIDAY,04 OCTOBER, 2019

BY A STAFF WRITER CHICAGO, IL -Daniel Epstein, the brother-in-law of former Chicago Ald. Ameya Pawar, is running to join the Illinois Supreme Court. Pawar is fully supporting the former Jenner & Block attorney, whose platform is focused on reforming court rules to prevent judicial corruption and to make courts more accessible to the average person.“Having Ameya behind us inspires our whole team,” said Epstein of his brotherin-law, who is the first Indian American and first Asian American to have served as an alderman in Chicago. “Ameya represents courage and compassion, and we’re taking those qualities with us in our fight for justice. Ameya didn’t accept the status quo and neither do we.” Epstein’s platform pledges to end the practice of allowing judges to determine for themselves whether they can decide cases in which they have alleged conflicts of interest. “Allowing a judge with an alleged conflict of interest to determine whether they have a conflict of interest is itself a conflict of interest,” Epstein said. “An independent individual or body should make that decision.” Epstein also

(L-R) Danielle Del Fierro & Daniel Epstein

wants to use technology to make it more convenient and affordable for average people to access courts. “Many have phones and computers that allow video chat,” said Epstein. “Some jurisdictions are already

using that technology to allow people to handle court cases remotely, so that folks with disabilities have an easier time using our courts, and so people with jobs don’t have to take a day off of work to handle a routine

legal matter.” Epstein predicts it will save time and money for many people, including the elderly, the disabled, and families with child care needs. Epstein said he is guided in his philosophy by Amartya Sen, the Nobel Prize-winning economist from India whose ground-breaking research found that famines are class- based disasters, and that they are preventable. “We are experiencing a famine of sorts. Not a famine of food, but a famine of justice. Sen found that famines are able to persist when they impact the most marginalized segments of society and the press is prevented from effectively informing the public about the problem. We’re experiencing the same thing in our justice system.” Epstein explained that critical information that could expose corruption and abuse disappears when criminal cases end in guilty pleas, and that the Illinois Supreme Court could make simple changes that would ensure that such information makes the public record. Epstein is touring Cook County and meeting voters to talk about his platform and to hear about their concerns. To learn more, visit www.epsteinforsupremecourt.com.

Philanthropist and Businessperson Anil Loomba Received FIA Enterpreneur of the Decade Award BY A STAFF WRITER Chicago, IL: The Federation of Indians (FIA) awarded Chicago area philanthropist and businessperson Anil Loomba with Entrepreneur of the Decade award at its 10th Annual Awards Gala and India’s 73rd Independence Day celebrations on August 16th in Rolling Meadows. The award recognizes the contributions of individuals and organizations which have made a substantive impact on the Indian diaspora in Chicago and the Midwest. The award was awarded through a community polling process. “I am humbled that amongst the vast majority of my peers that too are thriving, service-oriented, entrepreneurs, both nominated, and otherwise, the community chose to recognize my journey. It is truly the fulfillment of the proverbial American dream - that hard work and perseverance can equip you with the means and tools to create a meaningful life for your loved ones and an impact for the community,” Loomba said. Anil Loomba, a US Citizen, started his journey in 1992 after migrating to the US from Punjab where he worked as a Chartered Account and Director of Finance- leading four subsidiary companies for a large corporation. After migrating to Chicago, he earned his MBA in Finance from the Stewart School of Business at Chicago’s Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) and held a corporate position as the Finance Controller of a multinational corporation in Deerfield. It was several years later that Mr. Loomba ventured into the mortgage and real estate industries. Today he is one of the major players in the mortgage industry in both Illinois and Texas. Mr. Loomba was recognized for his leadership as a global philanthropist for his contributions to a vast and diverse collection of community groups and organizations. He has previously received awards from

the Gandhi Samaj of Chicago, Midwest Punjabi Association, American Cancer Society, Shirdi Sai Baba Temple in Aurora, The Hindu Temple of Greater Chicago in Lemont, The Urdu Samaj, Vernon Hill Indian Association, The Vidya Collective, Akshay Patra, amongst others. Mr. Loomba’s diverse and global approach to philanthropy was inspired early on by his father. Mr. Loomba, who serves on several boards, is the Founding Chairman and Honorary Member of Midwest Punjabi Association. He has supported countless community events, such as Diwali, Garbas, and cultural shows. Each year, his wife and he choose a new goal. This year, as part of their goal to empower senior citizens to further engage with the community, Mr. & Mrs. Loomba have purchased tables for Chicago area senior citizens to attend community events, which may otherwise be

prohibitively expensive for them to attend. Mr. Loomba maintains his ties to India, by continuing his contributions to teachers’ salaries in schools in villages of India, and continually staying connected to find new means to give back to his motherland. He identifies the key to success as “the ability to continually educate myself and be adaptive.” “I have been fortunate to have been recently exposed to causes new to me, by my network and family, and I look forward to connecting more with these initiatives by taking a more hands-on service role,” Mr. Loomba said. He considers his community one of his greatest educational resources – as it provides him the opportunity for expansion and growth through learning the changing needs of the community, and pushing himself to be in a position to continually meet or exceed those needs.

becomes associated with praise and recognition from friends and family, strengthening social bonds. The researchers called the phenomenon of eating more with friends and family “social facilitation”. They found that this social facilitation effect on eating was not observed across studies which had looked at food intake amongst people who were not well acquainted. “People want to convey positive impressions to strangers. Selecting small portions may provide a means of doing so and this may be why the social facilitation of eating is less pronounced amongst groups of strangers,” Ruddock said. The researchers explained that ancient hunter-gatherers shared food because it ensured equitable food distribution.

I NEW DELHI: Indian researchers have found that patients with hypertension and Type 2 diabetes who consumed a high fiber diet witnessed an improvement in their blood pressure, cholesterol and fasting glucose. For the study, the research team from Care Well Heart and Super Specialty Hospital in Amritsar, investigated the relationship between a high fiber diet and its impact on cardiovascular disease risk factors. “Comprehensive evaluation of etiological effects of dietary factors on cardiometabolic outcomes, their quantitative effects and corresponding optimal intakes are well-established,” said the study’s lead author Rohit Kapoor. According to guidelines from the National Institute of Nutrition and the Indian Council of Medical Research, the recommended dietary allowance (RDA) for dietary fiber is 40gm/2000kcal. Patients in this study had Type 2 diabetes and a calorie intake of 1,200-1,500kcal, causing their RDA for fiber to be 24-30gm. The fiber intake of these patients was increased up to 20 to 25 per cent from the recommended allowances for them to be consuming a high fiber diet. —IANS

The research results showed that a 10 microgram-per-cubic-meter increased in same-day exposure to PM2.5 was associated with a 1.4 per cent increased in violent crimes, nearly all of which was driven by crimes categorized as assaults. The team of researchers also found that a 0.01 parts-per-million increased in same-day exposure to ozone was associated with a 0.97 per cent increased in violent crime, or a 1.15 per cent increased in assaults. Changes in these air pollution measures had no statistically significant effect on any other category of crime. The study is set to be published in a forthcoming edition of the Journal of Environmental Economics and Management.

Eating “socially” has a powerful effect on increasing food intake relative to dining alone, said the study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. “We found strong evidence that people eat more food when dining with friends and family than when alone,” said research leader Helen Ruddock from the University of Birmingham in Britain. Previous studies found that those eating with others ate up to 48 per cent more food than solo diners and

women with obesity eating socially consumed up to 29 per cent more than when eating alone. For the study, the researchers evaluated 42 existing studies of research into social dining. The researchers found that people eat

Dry eye occurs when there is instability in the inner layer of the tear film that protects the outside of the eye. Today, most cases of dry eye are

diagnosed using patient questionnaires, which may be subjective and cannot typically be used to identify the cause of the disease. Objective methods for examining the tear film tend to be invasive and cannot track rapid changing dynamics, which are altered with every blink. “Up to 60 per cent of ophthalmology office visits are due to dry eye, pointing to the need for a non-invasive and highly accurate
