battery of US lawmakers bluntly told Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg in a hearing here to address his existing failures first before launching the digital currency Libra. In a six-hour grilling at a House Financial Services Committee hearing on Wednesday, both Democrat and Republican lawmakers expressed dissatisfaction with Facebook’s cryptocurrency plans. “As I have examined Facebook’s various problems, I have come to the conclusion that it would be beneficial for all if Facebook concentrates on addressing its many existing deficiencies and failures before proceeding any further on the Libra project,” said California Representative Maxine Waters. The hearing was focused on Libra, a cryptocurrency Facebook plans to launch in the first half of next year, reports CNET. “Facebook’s internal motto was

Trump withdraws sanctions on Turkey Let someone else fight over this long-bloodstained sand, says US President ARUL LOUIS, NEW YORK

eclaring “let someone else fight over this long-bloodstained sand,” US President Donald Trump on October 23 announced that there will be a “permanent ceasefire” in Northern Syria in the power vacuum left by the withdrawal of US troops. He said he was lifting the sanctions he had imposed on Turkey after it attacked Washington’s erstwhile allies, the Kurds, in the area, because of the ceasefire agreement. “Early this morning, the government of Turkey informed my

Trump accused of flashing ‘middle finger’ at female astronaut WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has found himself at the center of a fierce controversy after he was seen scratching his forehead with his middle finger when a female NASA astronaut corrected him during a video call to the International Space Station (ISS). During a video call to US astronauts Jessica Meir and her colleague Christina Koch who were on the International Space Station, Trump congratulated them for being the first two female astronauts to walk in space. “We are thrilled to be speaking live with two brave American astronauts who are making history joining us during their spacewalk...And this is the first time for a woman outside of the space station,” the US President said, who was accompanied by his daughter, Ivanka Trump. However, Meir fact-checked the President and said that they were not the first female astronauts to walk in space. In fact, it was “the first time that there has been two women outside” at the same time. After the astronaut corrected Trump, he was seen scratching his forehead with his middle finger. Trump, who has griped about the burdens on the US in policing the world, said, “Others have come out to help and we welcomed them to do so.” The Pew Research Center used a guided Machine Learning model to classify each of these 1.1 million tweets as related to national politics or not. The prevalence of tweets mentioning national politics from US adults who strongly disapprove of Trump is tied to two factors. First, this group makes up a larger share of Twitter users than of the general public. The share of US adults on Twitter who strongly disapprove of Trump (55 per cent) is seven percentage points higher than the share of the general public that holds this view (48 per cent). Second, this group is more likely to tweet about national politics than others on Twitter.

Bannon returns to fire up Trump’s base NIKHILA NATARAJAN, NEW YORK

C

hief strategist of the Donald Trump 2016 campaign Steve Bannon has stormed back into his old role of communications war room chief to aggressively defend the US president with a bare knuckle podcast run from his basement digs as impeachment peril swallows the White House. Barely 12 months remain before the 2020 elections. Bannon’s comeback is happening on the same day Trump lashed out at his own party, tweeting: “Never Trumper Republicans” are “in certain ways worse and more dangerous for our Country than the Do Nothing Democrats. They

are human scum!” Democrats have launched a swiftly moving impeachment inquiry last month in response to a whistleblow-

er revelation that Trump allegedly pressurized Ukraine for dirt on a political opponent and withheld military aid.

The Trump guardrails are straining under the pressure of a steady stream of closed door testimonies by highly ranked government functionaries that are ripping up the White House storyline. Republicans are worried about the lack of White House coordination and saturation messaging. Bannon’s hour-long show, starting Wednesday, is called ‘War Room: Impeachment’. Bannon says he will run this operation “until the day after the acquittal of Donald J. Trump”. Contained within it is more than just a battle cry for the Trump base to echo, Bannon and his co-hosts also offer a communications rubric for White House administration officials.

India, Pak sign Kartarpur pact

India will inform Pakistan authorities about the list of the pilgrims 10 days in advance and pilgrims will be notified through mail four days ahead of the travel IANS, DERA BABA NANAK (PUNJAB)

I

ndia and Pakistan on Thursday signed an agreement to operationalize the Kartarpur Corridor even as the ticklish issue of a $20 service fee imposed by Islamabad remained unresolved. The agreement paves the way for the inauguration of the Corridor next month ahead of the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev, the founder of Sikhism, and will enable devotees to visit throughout the year the holy shrine located 4.5 km from the border in Narowal district of Pakistan’s Punjab province. The signing ceremony took place at the Kartarpur Sahib Corridor Zero Point, International Border, Dera Baba Nanak. With the signing of this agreement, Joint Secretary in the Min-

The two countries signed the pact at Kartarpur Sahib Corridor Zero Point, International Border in Punjab’s Dera Baba Nanak on October 24.

istry of Home Affairs S.C.L. Das said a formal framework has been laid down for operationalization of the Kartarpur Sahib Corridor. The travel will be visa free and the pilgrims will have a choice to visit individually or in groups, and also to travel on foot.

Kamlesh Tiwari murder case: Lone witness yet to get security LUCKNOW: The lone eyewitness in the Kamlesh Tiwari murder case has not yet been provided any security by the Uttar Pradesh police. Saurashtrajeet Singh had seen the two assailants, Moinuddin and Ashfaq, and had ushered them into Tiwari’s office. Singh has been associated with the Hindu Samaj Party since Tiwari floated the outfit after quitting Hindu Mahasabha. Saurashtrajeet Singh is now living in his village in Kasia in Kushinagar. “The two assailants were masquerading as Hindus and had come to seek Tiwari’s help in marrying a Muslim girl. “One of them claimed to be in love

‘How long curbs will continue in J&K?’ NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Thursday asked the Centre that how long it intends to continue with the restrictions in Jammu and Kashmir after the abrogation of Article 370. “How many days you want restrictions. It is already two months now. You have to come clear on this and you have to find out other methods,” a bench headed by Justice N.V. Ramana said. “You may impose restrictions, but you (government) have to review your decisions.” —IANS

with a Muslim girl. I heard Tiwari promising legal and other help for the wedding. Then I left the place,” he told the local reporters. He further said: “I can recognize Kamlesh Tiwari the two who killed Kamlesh Tiwari and now I am the sole witness and also the prime target. But Uttar Pradesh police has not paid heed to my pleas for security.” Singh said that if the assailants could come from Gujarat and easily kill Tiwari, then he was a sitting duck. “I have not stepped out of my house since the day of the murder,” he said.

Under the agreement, the Indian government will inform Pakistan authorities about the list of the pilgrims 10 days in advance and pilgrims will be notified through mail four days ahead of the travel. Pilgrims need to carry only a valid passport and Persons of Indian Ori-

gin need to carry Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) card along with the passport of their country. The Corridor will be open from dawn to dusk and the pilgrims travelling in the morning will have to return on the same day. The Corridor will be operational throughout the year, except on notified days, which will be informed in advance. The Pakistan side has assured India to make sufficient provision for ‘Langar’ and distribution of ‘Prasad’. The main issue that has been a point of discussion is the insistence of Pakistan to levy $20 as service charge per pilgrim per visit, Das said. “India has consistently urged Pakistan to not levy any fee on the pilgrims. It was stressed time and again, including in the previous three Joint Secretary level meetings and at the diplomatic level, that

this is not in consonance with the religious and spiritual sentiments of Indian pilgrims,” he added India has shared its deep disappointment with Pakistan for its refusal to waive the fee, he said. “ However, in the interest of the pilgrims and timely operationalization of the Kartarpur Sahib Corridor before the 550th Prakash Purb, India has agreed to sign the agreement today.” While the agreement has been signed, the official said, the Centre has continued to urge this issue with the Pakistan government to reconsider its insistence on levying the fee. “India remains ready to amend the agreement accordingly. India continues to pursue the issue of allweather connectivity through the corridor. In this context, Indian government has built the bridge on Indian side and a temporary service road as an interim arrangement,” Das added.

Doing business now easier in India IANS, NEW DELHI

I

ndia jumped 14 ranks to 63rd position in the World Bank’s ‘Doing Business’ list released on Thursday and was also among the top-10 progress-making countries according to the multilateral agency in terms of ease of doing business. The World Bank report said: “Doing Business acknowledges the 10 economies that improved the most on the ease of doing business after implementing regulatory reforms. In Doing Business 2020, the 10 top improvers are Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Togo, Bahrain, Tajikistan, Pakistan, Kuwait, China, India, and Nigeria.” These economies implemented a

total of 59 regulatory reforms in 2018-19 - accounting for one-fifth of all the reforms recorded worldwide. Their efforts focused primarily on the areas of starting a business, dealing with construction

permits, and trading across borders, the report said. “India, which has conducted a remarkable reform effort, joins the list for the third year in a row,” the report said.

India slams Pakistan for stopping postal services IANS, NEW DELHI

I

ndia on October 21 launched a scathing attack on Pakistan for suspending postal mails exchange, with Minister for Communications Ravi Shankar Prasad saying it has been done unilaterally and without prior information, in contravention of global postal rules. “Every country works under the world postal union. But Pakistan is Pakistan. Pakistan has shut postal services (delivery of Indian letters in Pakistan and sending them to

Minister for Communications Ravi Shankar Prasad

India for delivery) for the last two months,” Prasad said on the sidelines of an event on start-ups here. “Pakistan has stopped Indian letters without any prior information or notice to our country. It is directly in contravention of the world postal union norms,” said the Minister for Communications. The matter came to light in September when Pakistan stopped sending postal mails to India since the tensions between the neighbors heightened amid the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir.

Chandigarh-based India-Pakistan peace activist Chanchal Manohar Singh told IANS that the stopping of the postal service is a gross violation of human rights. It has been more than one-anda-half months since Pakistan last accepted any postal consignment from India which forced the Indian Postal Department to put letters and mails for Pakistan on hold, too. Letters and publications originating from Pakistan were earlier mailed to India via Saudi Arabia airlines.

Haryana: BJP wins 40, Cong 31

H

aryana was set for a hung Assembly on Thursday with no party appearing in a position to cross the halfway mark in the 90member House, but in Maharashtra, the BJP-Shiv Sena was well placed to retain power. According to the latest trends available with the Election Commission, the ruling BJP won 15 seats and was leading in 23 other constituencies in Haryana, still 8 short of the majority figures. Close on the heels was Congress, winning 12 seats and leading in 21. Newcomer Jannayak Janata Dal (JJP) was victorious in 5 constituencies and was ahead in 5 others, making it a possible kingmaker, along with 6 Independents, one of whom won and 5 were leading. Indian National Lok Dal (INLD), which ruled the state for four times in the past, was leading in merely 1 seat. The outcome of the Assembly polls held on October 21 is a setback for the BJP, which had won 47 seats in the last state elections in 2014. The party had been expressing confidence about raising its tally beyond 75 this time, using the nationalist pitch of abolition of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir and the Balakot air strike. The results and the trends come

Shah thanks voters for reposing faith in BJP-Sena NEW DELHI: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chief Amit Shah here on Thursday thanked the people of Maharashtra for showing confidence in the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance. The two parties have collectively won 93 seats and are leading in 66 seats. In a tweet in Hindi, he congratulated Maharashtra BJP chief Chandrakant Patil and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis for their efforts. “Thanks to the people of Maharashtra for expressing their confidence in the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance. Under the leadership of Narendra Modi, the state government will continue to be dedicated to the progress of the state and service to the people,” Shah said. as a shocker for the saffron party, particularly since it had won all the 10 seats in the Lok Sabha elections held just five months back. The BJP had formed the government in Haryana for the first time in 2014, when it improved its tally from 4 in the previous elections. The Congress, on the other hand, improved its performance substantially in this Assembly elections as it had managed only 15 seats the last time and had failed to open its account in the April-May Lok Sabha elections. The INLD, which ruled the

state the last time from 2000 to 2004, stood second with 19 seats in the last Assembly elections and was the main Opposition party in the outgoing House. JJP was formed in December last year after Dushyant Chautala, the grandson of four-time Haryana Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala, split from INLD following a bitter fight in the family. The Congress has already begun efforts to woo JJP leader Dushyant Chautala but he has refused to spell out his future course of action, saying it will be decided

after the party’s meeting on Friday. In Maharashtra, where 288 seats are at stake, the BJP won 35 seats and was leading in 86 while its ally Shiv Sena bagged 24 seats and was ahead in 34 constituencies, taking their combined lead tally to 159, 15 more than the half way mark. From the Opposition camp, the Congress won 16 seats and was leading in 29 while its alliance partner Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) won 18 seats and was leading in 35 seats. Going by the results and trends in Maharashtra, the BJP’s tally is lesser by 22 seats

CHANDIGARH: The ruling BJP in Haryana, which failed to cross the halfway mark in the 90-member Assembly, will present its case to form the government, it was learnt. Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar will be meeting Governor Satyadev Narayan Arya here to stake claim to form the government. The BJP won 40 seats, but all its state ministers lost, barring two, including Anil Vij and state party chief Subhash Barala. However, the rival Congress won 31 seats, while less than 12month-old Jannayak Janata Party (JJP), which broke away from the state’s once major regional party Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) owing to family disputes, won 10 seats. Nine others, comprising independents, have also won. —IANS

compared to its performance in the last Assembly elections held in 2014. Shiv Sena had won 63 seats last time. The NCP appears to have improved its performance significantly as it had got 41 seats in the last Assembly elections, while the Congress had managed 42 seats.

Fadnavis credits allies for win in Maharashtra IANS, MUMBAI

At a separate media briefing, Thackeray reminded the BJP of the pre-Lok Sabha elections understanding of a 50:50 power-sharing formula, including sharing the post of Chief Minister

C

hief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday credited all the Bharatiya Janata Party allies for its victory in the Maharashtra Assembly elections even as ally Shiv Sena President Uddhav Thackeray played hard ball by saying “there is no hurry to form the government.” “I am thankful to the people of the state for reposing faith in us again, and all the allies for working hard for this victory,” said Fadnavis, taking care to downplay his party’s prominence. Though the BJP’s tally has fallen this time, there is no substantial increase in the strength of the opposition parties, Fadnavis said, adding that peoples’ expectations may have increased. “We accept the verdict of the people. There is little doubt that we would be forming the next government with the support of all our allies,” Fadnavis asserted.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

At a separate media briefing, Thackeray reminded the BJP of the pre-Lok Sabha elections understanding of a 50:50 power-sharing formula, including sharing the post of Chief Minister. “There is no hurry to form the government,” Thackeray said,

indicating that he would consider all options after the final results are declared. Earlier on Thursday, Sena MP Sanjay Raut had raised the similar demand of 50:50 power-sharing ratio as was decided with the top BJP leadership.

“There will be no change in the situation. Even the post of Chief Minister has already been decided with the Sena leaders. There will be a ‘Maha-Yuti’ government soon,” Fadnavis said, dismissing speculation that the Sena might explore options. The statement came shortly after Congress MP Hussain Dalwai offered the party’s support to Sena if it was ready to form the government.

ormer Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly on Wednesday was formally elected as the President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). “It’s official - Sourav Ganguly formally elected as the President of BCCI,” the BCCI tweeted. The appointment of Ganguly, who has donned many hats, including presiding over the administration of Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) became the only contender for the top job that was finalised last week. Alongwith Ganguly, Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s son Jay Shah was made the secretary. Kerala’s Jayesh George was appointed as BCCI Joint Secretary, while Mahim Verma of Uttarakhand became the new vice-president. Former BCCI President Anurag Thakur’s younger brother Arun Dhumal became the treasurer. The appointment of the new BCCI team brings an end to the 33month reign of the Supreme Courtappointed Committee of Administrators (CoA) who were tasked for running the administration of world’s richest cricket body. RANCHI: India skipper Virat Kohli has congratulated Sourav Ganguly on becoming the President-elect of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and is happy over the development. Speaking to reporters after India’s historic whitewash of South Africa in the 3-Test rubber, which concluded here, the Indian run-machine also said Ganguly hasn’t spoken to him about anything related to M.S. Dhoni’s future. “I congratulated him (Sourav Ganguly). It’s great that he has become BCCI president. He will get in touch with me when he has to. I will go meet him when he tells me to. He has not spoken to me about that (MS Dhoni’s future),” Kohli said. Earlier, Ganguly had said he would talk to Kohli on October 24 when India’s squad for the home Test and T20I series against Bangladesh will be announced. “I will find out from the selectors when I meet them on 24th. I will find out what the selectors are thinking. Then I will put my opinion,” Ganguly

Needing just two wickets to maintain their supremacy on Day 4, the Indian team completed the formalities within the first 12 balls giving away just one run and concluded what has been a highly dominant show by the No.1 ranked team over South Africa. Overnight batsman Theunis de Bruyn -- who came in as concussion substitute for Dean Elgar -- was the first to go as he became Shahbaz Nadeem’s first victim in the second innings. He was caught brilliantly by wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha at his individual score of 30. The very next ball, Nadeem took a rebound catch to dismiss Lungi Ngidi. The performance of the visitors in the second essay was no different as they kept on losing wickets right from the start and showed no application whatsoever. The Proteas batsmen appeared clueless against the class of the Indian bowlers, especially Umesh Yadav and Mohammed Shami. South Africa had already lost the Test series by tasting comprehensive defeats in the first two Tests. Deepotsav Celebration

Delhi to have first of its kind ‘Community Diwali’ Kejriwal appeals people to celebrate a cracker-free and pollution-free Diwali this year IANS, NEW DELHI

T

o dissuade people from bursting crackers, the Delhi government will organise a mega first of its kind Diwali laser show as part of its community Diwali celebrations between October 26 and 29 at Connaught Place, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said. Addressing the media along with deputy Manish Sisodia, Kejriwal appealed to the people of Delhi to celebrate a cracker-free and pollution-free Diwali this year. “The Delhi government will celebrate a grand Diwali festival in Connaught Place. I heartily invite all the people of Delhi to come and celebrate a pollution-free and cracker-free Diwali with us. The Delhi government has scheduled a four-day laser show everyday between October 26 and 29, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.” said the Chief Minister. Kejriwal said that there are no entry passes required for the event, all the people of Delhi can have free access to the laser show event.

Kejriwal said that there are no entry passes required for the event.

“The whole of Connaught Place will be decorated with laser lights. The laser shows will happen after every one hour, with various art and cultural programmes alongside the laser show. There will be food courts and markets where people can come and enjoy with their families.” Kejriwal said he feels elated to be announcing the laser show event, as “the people of Delhi are like family to me”. He also said that laser shows will be organized at multiple locations

next year, if the laser show is successful this year. “The government will organize the event at various locations and on a larger scale next year.” Kejriwal said on October 26, the Lieutenant Governor will inaugurate the show. The Chief Minister said there are no restrictions levied on the traders and businessmen. Instead, trade will be doubled because people will be visiting Connaught Place in large numbers.

Traders oppose laser show for pollution-free Delhi in CP NEW DELHI: Just days after the Chief minister Arvind Kejriwal announced a laser show from October 26 to 29 at Connaught place’s Central park, the traders here have started to register their protest against the event. Claiming that the four day laser show would end up reducing sales of the showroom owners of Connaught Place, the president of New Delhi Traders Organization on Monday said, “Connaught place is a commercial place not a cultural place, that government needs to understand. We are already witnessing negative sales and now the proposed show would further decrease our sales.” The traders of the market are objecting to a proposal where the Delhi government has batted for making the inner circle of the CP pedestrian for four days of the event on the occasion of Diwali. Deputy chief minister of Delhi Manish Sisodia had said that parking

arrangements are likely to be made beyond the outer circle and batteryoperated vehicles would be arranged to ferry the visitors to the Central Park. “The modalities are being worked out and would be shared soon,” he had said. The traders claim that the removal of parking facility from inner circle would end up in decreased footfall of shoppers and they will be the one most affected. “If you remove parking from inner circle specially on the days when the footfall is expected to rise, then the government is doing nothing but killing our sales which are already down,” Atul Bhargava, President of New Delhi Traders Association told IANS. On the government’s hand, the Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has urged the general public to attend the laser show instead of bursting crackers on Diwali. —IANS

his Diwali, it is back to basics. Potters across Uttar Pradesh are working overtime to make earthen “diyas” that were lost to Chinese lamps and lanterns in the past years. But, now people are again picking up the diyas. “Since people are showing interest in buying earthen diyas, we are also making new designs and shapes. We are making multiple diya stands that can be used for decoration even after Diwali,” said Raghu Prajapati, a potter in Chinhat on the outskirts of Lucknow. Chinhat was once the hub of clay pottery, but slowly the factories and shops were shut down in the absence of demand. The area is now showing signs of renewed activity.

The waterproof piped lights are also in demand since they last longer.

Crackers go green this Diwali

Delhi Police have ensured ‘no risk’ for all asthma patients on festival of lights SANJEEV KUMAR SINGH CHAUHAN, NEW DELHI

D

elhi Police have ensured “no risk” for all asthma patients this Diwali as they have not issued a single license to any ordinary or gunpowder firecracker seller. All the permissions have so far been given only for ‘green firecrackers’. Confirming the facts to IANS, Joint Commissioner of Delhi Police Licensing Unit Subhashish Chaudhary said: “In all 15 districts of Delhi, total 97 sellers had applied for license to sell firecrackers. To the date (October 23) 57 shopkeepers were issued licenses with a condition to sell on ecofriendly green crackers. These all licenses are temporary”. “These apart, 14 firecracker seller in Delhi already have permanent license. Permanent licenses are issued for a period of five years while temporary licenses expire only in 10 to 15 days. But all the license holders, irrespective to the nature of permission, will have to sell only green fireworks in Delhi. They cannot sell gunpowder crackers,” Chaudhary said. According to the data, out of 97

requests maximum 21 permissions were given in the East Delhi district which includes Preet Vihar, Anand Vihar, Laxmi Nagar, Shakarpur, Pandav Nagar, Ganesh Nagar etc. 17 licenses were given to North Delhi -- Sadar Bazar, Civil Lines, Timarpur, Kotwali, Chandni Chowk etc. While 13 licenses were granted in West Delhi (Raja Garden, Tilak Nagar,

Rajauri Garden, Raghuvir Nagar, Kirti Nagar etc.). The least number of licenses (10) were issued in Outer Delhi district. There is a stringent procedure to issue licenses for firecrackers. Shopkeepers send their requests to the Station House Officer of their areas. The Deputy Commissioner of Police office then gives its consent over the applications. There-

after, the Fire Service Headquarters issues the No Objection Certificate to all who fulfil the criteria. Delhi Fire Service Director Vipin Kental told IANS: “We received 97 new applications for temporary licenses. We have issued NOC to 79 applicants after founding them perfect for the criteria”. The Director further said that we issue license only after physical visit

to the spot. The shop area should be according to the norms i.e. nine square metre. Ways to the spot should be clear and wide to reach in any emergency and there should not be any doubt of catching fire. After giving NOCs, the Fire department again sends the applications to the DCP office. The DCP office then reviews the applications and sends them to the licensing unit after giving its consent. Thereafter, the licensing unit gives final permission to sell the firecrackers. The all data suggests that if everything goes according to norms than pollution level in Delhi on Diwali will be as low as comfortable to any asthma patient. Chaudhary said: “This is the first time when no one is allowed to sell gunpowder firecrackers. All will sell the green crackers that will help to reduce the probability of pollution”. Asked about the idea of selling green fireworks, he said: “The green fireworks are the result of the research conducted by the Petroleum and Explosive Safety Organisation which falls under the Union Petroleum Ministry. Presently, 28 manufacturers are producing green crackers in the country”.

E-tailers set to celebrate Diwali worth Rs 35,000 crore IANS, NEW DELHI

W

ith the second wave of festive sales coming to an end, industry experts say the e-commerce players like Amazon and Walmartowned Flipkart are set to celebrate a bumper Diwali with pocketing over Rs 35,000 crore (nearly $5 billion) despite certain sectors facing severe economic gloom. Led by Amazon and Flipkart, etailers in India achieved a record $3 billion (nearly Rs 19,000 crore) of Gross Merchandise Value (GMV) in the first six days of the festive sale from September 29October 4. Walmart-owned Flipkart and Amazon dominated 90 per cent of the market share, according to Bengaluru-based research firm RedSeer Consultancy, as the

demand surged from smaller cities and towns this year -- indicating that the consumer spending has only increased in the country despite slowdown fears. The shift in spending from offline to online and a slow first half has helped push sales this

October. The entire month of October is expected to generate up to $6 billion (Rs 39,000 crore) in online sales, shared mostly by Amazon and Flipkart. According to Forrester, it is not only customers in Tier 1 and Tier 2 cities that are spending more

online during this festive season, buyers in Tier 3 cities and beyond are too. “Online buyers in Tier 3 cities will spend more online during this festive season as compared to last year as they become more comfortable with online channels and getting access to brands and affordable financing options. This is an encouraging sign for online marketplaces, which need these customers to buy more frequently and in more categories,” Forrester elaborated. The third largest ecommerce player Snapdeal registered 87 million visits on its platform in the month of September as festive season began. In the last one year alone, Snapdeal’s traffic has grown 61 per cent on its web and mobile sites. “The growing volumes on Snapdeal are built on a sound and

granular understanding of the importance of value in Bharatfocused e-commerce. Our ability to build scale along with favorableness unit economics gives Snapdeal an immense competitive advantage,” Kunal Bahl, CEO and Co-founder, Snapdeal, told IANS. In the ongoing Diwali sales, Snapdeal’s order volumes grew 52 per cent over last Diwali and volumes doubled in more than 120 cities across the country, according to the company. According to Anil Kumar, Founder, and CEO, RedSeer Consulting, the first wave of the festive sale event has seen record gross merchandise value (GMV) of almost $3 billion despite challenging macro environment, indicating that consumer sentiment on online shopping remains bullish.

ollywood besties Neha Dhupia and Soha Ali Khan are in the mood to treat their sweet tooth when they get together ahead of Diwali for a festive feast. “Diwali is a beautiful festival and every year we celebrate this occasion with our near and dear ones,” Soha, 41, told IANS. Actresses Neha and Soha are known to celebrate life’s important moments together, from birthdays to dinner parties. Soha posted on Instagram a special, nutritious recipe of carrot kheer that she prepared for Neha, who usually avoids too many calories. “Everyone indulges during Diwali. No one can escape the grandeur of the festival — be it the celebrations or the feasts. But I like adding a healthy twist to my food during the festival as well,” she explained, adding that the dish was prepared using Quaker Oats. Dressed in ethnic attire, Neha was seen thanking Soha on social

media, for letting her indulge without guilt. “I generally follow a simple diet and fitness regime. I eat a lot of good quality carbohydrates, as well as fresh fruits and vegetables. But everyone tends to indulge a bit during the festive time, and it’s the same with me. However, I try to make it as healthy as possible,” Neha, 39, shared with IANS. Neha and Soha are mothers to young daughters, which gives

Diwali a new meaning to both actresses. Soha likes to dress up her little one Inaaya, and she says she will explain to her this year what the festival signifies. Neha calls her daughter Mehr a happy baby who loves to see people and celebrations all around. “This is her first Diwali and I am hoping she enjoys the festive spirit around her,” said Neha about Mehr.

Shubhangi to spend Diwali with oldage home people MUMBAI: Diwali is around the corner and “Bhabiji Ghar Par Hain!” fame actress Shubhangi Atre is excited about celebrating the festival of lights at an oldage home in Mumbai. “Diwali is the most splendid festival amongst all the Hindu festivals. Apart from being a festival of lights and welcoming new beginnings, I also see it as a festival of sharing happiness. Every year during this festival, I follow a tradition of donating something new to a place. Last year I had taken up the cause of donating new clothes at an NGO for young kids and this year I plan to gift new diyas and clothes at an old age home. “I have seen my grandparents gleam in joy when we celebrate Diwali with them and I would like to gift that same joy to another person who probably wishes to celebrate this festival with his/her kids,” Shubhangi said. On Diwali, Shubhangi is also looking forward to playing poker with her costars of the show, which airs on &TV. She added: “We have a special celebration on the sets of ‘Bhabiji Ghar Par Hai!’ where this time we will take out time for a game of teen

patti. A few of my family members have also come from Indore and I am really delighted to celebrate Diwali in their presence. My mom is getting some special Indori Diwali delicacies and I really look forward to indulging in that on this festival.”

Twitter announces new Snapchat to let you enjoy Diwali in AR emoji for Diwali 2019 IANS, BENGALURU

NEW DELHI: Twitter on Thursday announced a new emoji allowing its users to control how high the diyas flame burns during Diwali. “In line with our tradition of engaging people in this conversation, as well as delighting them with innovations, we have launched a ‘Lights On’ diya emoji to represent the joy of the festival of lights,” Manish Maheshwari, Managing Director, Twitter India, said in a statement. The emoji -- diya or oil lamp, when viewed in the light mode would appear with a small flame. However, keeping in line with the

spirit of the festival of lights, audiences could have the flame burn brighter by switching over to Twitter’s dark mode. Twitter’s dark mode consists of two variations, “dim” and “lights out”. The former is already available across the Web, iOS and Android, while the latter has been available on the Web and iOS, and rolled out on Android this week. “Lights Out” mode could save battery life on those devices with OLED screens, improves readability at night, and also increased accessibility for individuals with specific types of visual impairment. —IANS

Indians pick beaches over hills for Diwali

People are heading to the land of beaches, Goa, this year followed by metro cities Delhi and Bengaluru IANS, NEW DELHI

I

nstead of celebrating the festival traditionally at home, Indians are preferring beaches over mountains during Diwali holidays, a new report from OYO Hotels and Homes revealed on Wednesday. The booking data for the Diwali week, 25th October to 31st October, 2019, shows people are heading to the land of beaches, Goa, this year followed by metro cities Delhi and Bengaluru. Most bookings for Goa have come from Pune, Bengaluru and Ahmedabad. “With the festive season around the corner, we are witnessing consumers stepping out of the city for a memorable time with loved ones whether it’s Goa or neighbouring towns,” said Gaurav Ajmera, Chief Operating Officer, India & South Asia, OYO Hotels & Homes. “Moreover, with consumer focused brands running creative campaigns and offering attractive services at great discounts during this time, we see a significant increase in bookings within the hospitality and tourism industry,”

Ajmera said. Indians are preferring beaches over mountains this year with most bookings witnessed for Goa, Mumbai, Puducherry and Visakhapatnam over scenic beauties like Ooty, Lonavala, Mussoorie, Nainital, Manali, Darjeeling, Mount-Abu, the report said. Delhi and Bengaluru witnessed most bookings from within the city showcasing how people are opting to relax this Diwali week. The report added that most Del-

hiites booked for Amritsar, Jaipur and Lucknow whereas Mumbaikars plan to visit Pune, Mahabaleshwar and Lonavala, the report said. People from Bengaluru, on the other hand, are planning for Mysore, Ooty, Mangalore, Kochi and Puducherry. According to the report, The company also saw maximum bookings by couples for the Diwali period closely followed by family outings.

Diwali look from your wedding trousseau HYDERABAD: The Telangana government has allocated Rs.26 crore for celebrations during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. Diwali could be a perfect occasion to use all your heavy outfits, jewelry which you thought will never be of use again. Sanna Vohra, founder of The Wedding Brigade, a wedding content, e-commerce and services platform, suggests five different ways to pull out the most scintillating Diwali look right out of your wedding trousseau! Bring out your bridal jewelry to elevate your look - This is the perfect occasion to bring out your bridal jewelry and give it another spin. The tip is to let the jewelry do all the talking, go for solid colors, simple motifs to bring about a really chic look. Elegantly traditional with a modern twist - Unlike your wedding, you don’t have to stick to traditional fabrics or silhouettes; you can experiment with a variety of lighter fabrics and brighter shades. This is also a good time to bring out your favorite unconventional look from dhoti pants to asymmetrical kurtas and more. Play out your make-up fantasies Remember all the makeup looks you’ve bookmarked on Instagram? Not all of them would have made it to your bridal functions, so here is your chance to put all of that hard work to good use. Go with metallic shades for

eyes or pop of neon for your lips for those extra-lit selfies. Find everything in your mom’s closet - Consider your moms wardrobe a treasure trove of fashion goodies every daughter inherits. You’re bound to discover some classic gems that have come back in style. Grab some of her fringe pieces, silk scarves and sarees to create your own personalized look. Experiment with footwear by wearing ‘juttis’ or the ‘Kolhapuris’. Nine-yards of simplicity - Keep it simple with a red and gold or white and gold sari and amp it up with a bright blouse or a modern crop top. Enhance the look with a red colored bindi and a bunch of gold bangles. Complete the look with a loose bun or blow-dried hair.< —IANS

Simple tips to plan your meals this festive season IANS, NEW DELHI

I

ndia is a land of unity and diversity. The same applies to the traditions that people follow. Each state has a different set of customs and accordingly people engage in fulfilling rituals that the many festivals bring in. Festivals are fondly looked forward to, as they mark not only the celebrations but also the special savories that are prepared, characteristic of that particular festival. Food has always been the central part of our culture. A unique array of delicacies, confections, and sweets is part and parcel. Even the best of us let go and put on a few extra kilos during the holidays. The best way to avoid piling on

these extra kilos is to choose wisely, eat in moderation and follow a regular exercise regimen. Here are a few tips to help you plan your meals better this festive season:

Do not starve - In a bid to stay healthy, we all tend to starve before a big Diwali party or on the day we have plans to head out to a new restaurant or to someone’s home. Remember when you eat on an empty stomach,

your body will seize the food and store it as fat. The next time you are invited to a party, make sure you have something prior - it could be some fruit, a protein soup or shake, a bowl of dahi or even some salad. Stay hydrated - Drink up! Always keep a bottle of water with you. Drinking lots of water helps curb hunger pangs. Additionally, dehydration during the holidays can cause fatigue, reduced motivation, and mood swings. With zero calories and the ability to make you feel full, consumption of it can help promote weight loss. You can also consume water infused with slices of fresh fruits, cucumber, lemon, ginger and mint for internal cleansing. It will also keep your skin hydrated, radiant and glowing for the festive season.

Make the Right Choices - Choose high protein and fibre options as they reduce cravings for sweets, giving you a feeling of satiety and keeping you full longer. Also choose nutrient-packed superfoods. You could opt for high-protein soups and meal replacement shakes which are infused with ingredients like moringa, quinoa, buckwheat, amaranth and turmeric. Stay away from “Sugar Free” - During festivals especially people even gift each other sugar free sweets. It is important to note that sugar free does not mean carb, calorie or fat free. When manufacturers remove sugar, they often add fat to the product making it higher in fat content than the product with sugar. One can avoid eating sugar this Diwali.

Actor reveals she has never received flowers from the men she has dated

ctress Ileana D’Cruz says choosing acting as a career was by accident, adding that she wanted to explore singing as a profession. The actress opened up about her career decisions in an episode of “The Love Laugh Live Show”, aired on Romedy Now. When host Shibani Dandekar asked her about her journey from modelling to Bollywood, Ileana said: “Choosing acting as a career was by accident.” Asked if not an actor, what would be her second option as a career, Ileana confessed: “If not acting, the plan B would be singing. I would have been a singer.” Having started her career with Telugu film Devadasu, Ileana also did Tamil movies and forayed into Bollywood with “Barfi!”. Her roles in subsequent movies like Rustom, Main Tera Hero, Mubarakan,

Baadshaho and Raid gave her a further push in Hindi cinema. On being asked on the three co-actors she has loved working with, Ileana said: “I share a very close bond with Nargis Fakhri and we’re very good friends. Apart from Nargis, I connected well with Arshad Warsi and Varun Dhawan.” Asked about using Instagram filters and photoshop images, she said: “I don’t like to photoshop and filter my images as we have to be true to ourselves and not be a person who we can’t recognizes after being filtered.” Ileana also revealed that she has never received flowers from the men she has dated. “I love flowers and the men don’t know about it and haven’t gifted me any yet. The only time I have got flowers was from my father,” she said.

‘Bala’ helped Yami find an actor in herself MUMBAI: Actress Yami Gautam says her upcoming film “Bala” is an entertainer that requires each of its actors to relearn and rediscover herself or himself. The “Uri: The Surgical Strike” actress will be seen playing a TikTok star named Pari in “Bala”, which stars Ayushmann Khurrana. “Some films are a complete package and this is that movie. It’s an entertainer that requires each of its actors to relearn and rediscover themselves. There are multiple socially relevant themes and none of it compromises on the laughter quotient promised. This is what quality movies are about and each young actor in today’s time finds them-

selves naturally attracted to such stories these days. I hope we are showered with love from fans and audiences,” she said. “Bala”, which narrates the plight of a young man who suffers from premature balding, is scheduled to release on November 7.

‘Hotel Mumbai’ is about unlikely heroes: Dev Patel MUMBAI: Slumdog Millionaire actor Dev Patel says Hotel Mumbai is a tale of humanity and unlikely heroes, and that’s what makes it special. Hotel Mumbai is based on the true story of the 26/11 terrorist attack at Taj Mahal Palace hotel on Mumbai, in 2008. “The film for me is about the unlikely heroes of this hotel. The beauty of this story is that those staff of the hotel to whom you may not even give a second look, brings out their humanity,” Dev said. “And it was really these people who put their lives on the line to save their guests. Because for them

this hotel was their home, it was sacred to them,” he added. The Zee Studios and Purpose Entertainment’s project is set to hit the Dev Patel screens in India on November 29. Directed by Anthony Maras, the film also stars Anupam Kher and Armie Hammer. Previously, Anupam had shared that working in the film made him learn the fact that the biggest lesson of his life was to value humanity above all. —IANS

‘Saand Ki Aankh’ aims well but misses bullseye S

aand Ki Aankh” aims well but misses the bullseye. The film is important for what it is trying to tell you, but the effort gets weighed down by an obvious obligation to tick-mark the diktats of commercial cinema. Bollywood writer Tushar Hiranandani’s directorial debut ends up a work of ironies - it is high on intention and low on execution. You admire Taapsee Pannu and Bhumi Pednekar’s performances, even as you can’t resist a chuckle over the ludicrous prosthetics gone into making them look aged. The outstanding women, whose real-life story Saand Ki Aankh narrates, instill awe but it surprises you how their on-screen personas are imagined without much depth. The drama uses the all-important issue of gender discrimination in heartland India, yet characters are too blackand-white to leave any serious impact. Also, for a biopic about a couple

of spirited women who defied all odds, Saand Ki Aankh is a surprisingly lazy film. Balwinder Singh Janjua’s screenplay starts off in 1999, introducing Chandro and Prakashi Tomar (Bhumi and Taapse) as aged bahus in the household of a village Sarpanch (Prakash Jha). Unknown to the crudely chauvinistic men of the household, the sisters-in-law make way to a shooting competi-

tion, and eventually win. It turns out Chandro and Prakashi have quietly ventured out to win many more such competitions in the past, but are forced to keep their medals hidden from their men. Only the women of the household know of their sporting talent, and victories. In a storyline that oscillates between the present and flashbacks through nearly two decades, Chan-

dro and Prakashi’s lives are meant to highlight the travails of women in rural India who have little or no liberty to pursue any other activity beyond household chores. In that sense, Saand Ki Aankh was trying to be more than just a sports movie. The film was essentially using the real-life tale of Chandro and Prakashi to make a strong socio-cultural comment, on the need to give women equal opportunities. As the years pass, Chandro and Prakashi’s granddaughters take to shooting and the same story repeats itself. None of the cruel chauvinistic reality facing women has changed in all these years. The men in the

household are still vehemently opposed to accepting the talent and achievements of their women, even though Chandro and Prakashi have conquered the hearts of the rest of the country. Saand Ki Aankh is too simplistic in the way it probes these facets of Indian womanhood in the village scenario. Despite the abundant melodrama that constantly threatens to consume the screenplay, Taapsee and Bhumi clearly seem to be relishing their acts as the Shooter Daadis, and that is primarily what makes them immensely watchable. The performances by the cast somewhat redeem a film that raises a significant issue but struggles to address it effectively. Saand Ki Aankh talks of women empowerment, and aims at celebrating womanhood. It needed more assured writing and direction and, perhaps, a twist of intelligent humour would have helped, too. —Vinayak Chakravorty

The study, published in the Journal of Endocrinology suggested that a surge in levels of the appetite-promoting hormone - ghrelin, after a period of fasting prompted mice to initiate voluntary exercise. “Our findings suggest that hunger, which promotes ghrelin production, may also be involved in increasing motivation for voluntary exercise when feeding is limited,”

esearchers have found that fatty tissues accumulate in the airway walls, particularly in people who are overweight or obese. The study, published in the European Respiratory Journal, suggested that the fatty tissue alters the structure of people’s airways and this could be one reason behind the increased risk of asthma. “Our research team studies the structure of the airways within our lungs and how these are altered in people with respiratory disease,” said the study’s author John Elliot from Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital in Australia. “Looking at the samples of lungs,

we spotted fatty tissue that had built up in the airway walls. We wanted to see if this accumulation was correlated with body weight,” Elliot said. The researchers examined post-

mortem samples of the lungs that had been donated for the research and stored in the Airway Tissue Biobank. They studied samples from 52 people, including 15 who had no asthma, 21 who had the disease but died of other causes and 16 who died of asthma. Using dyes to help visualise the structures of 1373 airways under a microscope, they identified and quantified any fatty tissue present. They compared this data with each person’s body mass index (BMI). The study showed that fatty tissue accumulates in the walls of the airways. The analysis revealed that the amount of fat present increases in line with increasing BMI.

Want to be fit? Workout before breakfast today LONDON: Fitness enthusiasts, take a note! Researchers have found that working out before breakfast could increase health benefits of exercise. The study, published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, the Universities of Bath and Birmingham found that by changing the timing of when you eat and exercise, one can better control the blood sugar levels. “Our results suggest that changing the timing of when you eat in relation to when you exercise can bring about profound and positive changes to your overall health,” said study author Javier Gonzalez from the University of Bath. The six-week study, which involved 30 men classified as obese

or overweight and compared results from two intervention groups (who ate breakfast before/after exercise) and a control group, found that people who performed exercise before breakfast burned double the amount of fat than the group who exercised after breakfast. They found that increased fat use is mainly due to lower insulin levels during exercise when people have fasted overnight. —IANS

Frequent drinking more harmful than binge episodes IANS, SEOUL

A

lcohol lovers, take a note. Drinking small amounts of alcohol frequently is linked with a higher likelihood of atrial fibrillation than binge drinking, says a new study. Atrial fibrillation is the most common heart rhythm disorder and raises the risk of stroke by five-fold. Symptoms include palpitations, racing or irregular pulse, shortness of breath, tiredness, chest pain and dizziness. “Our study suggests that drinking less often may also be important to protect against atrial fibrillation,”

The analysis included 9,776,956 individuals without atrial fibrillation.

said study author Jong-Il Choi, from Korea University College in South Korea.

For the study, published in the journal EP Europace, researchers examined the relative importance of

frequent drinking versus binge drinking for new-onset atrial fibrillation. The analysis included 9,776,956 individuals without atrial fibrillation who underwent a national health check-up in 2009 which included a questionnaire about alcohol consumption. Participants were followed-up until 2017 for the occurrence of atrial fibrillation. The number of drinking sessions per week was the strongest risk factor for new-onset atrial fibrillation. Compared with drinking twice per week (reference group), drinking every day was the riskiest, with a

hazard ratio (HR) of 1.412, while drinking once a week was the least risky (HR 0.933). Binge drinking did not show any clear link with new-onset atrial fibrillation. “Our study suggests that frequent drinking is more dangerous than infrequent binge drinking with regard to atrial fibrillation,” Choi said. There was a two per cent increase in the risk of new-onset atrial fibrillation for each gram of alcohol consumed per week. Compared to mild drinkers, those who drank no alcohol, moderate, or high amounts had 8.6 per cent, 7.7 per cent, and 21.5 per cent elevated risks, respectively, the study said.

‘Quit alcohol for your good mental health’ Moderate drinking was defined as 14 drinks or less per week for men and 7 drinks or less per week for women BHARAT UPADHYAY, NEW DELHI

I

f you thought moderate drinking would not do you much harm, think again. Researchers have found that quitting alcohol completely may improve mental well-being, especially for women. Moderate drinking was defined as 14 drinks or less per week for men and 7 drinks or less per week for women. The study found that men and women who were lifetime abstainers had the highest level of mental wellbeing at the start of the study. For women who were moderate drinkers and quit drinking, quitting was linked to a favorable change in mental well-being, showed results published in the journal CMAJ. While the study was conducted on Chinese and American populations, experts have said that the results could apply to Indian populations too. According to Naveen Kumar, Consultant Gastroenterology, Narayana Superspecialty Hospital in Gurugram, quitting alcohol even for a month could help in repairing the gut and metabolic system and alleviate its symptoms. It will help in boosting long-term health and can provide a healthier quality of life. “Abstinence from alcohol is mandatory for a healthier brain and

liver, a stronger immune system and heart, especially in women as alcohol effects are more harmfully serious on women, considering their metabolism and estrogen levels,” Kumar told IANS. In fact, anyone can benefit from sobriety because the potential benefits of alcohol do not outweigh its known harm and risks. “Alcohol works in a way that may depress our central nervous system

and may fluctuate our mood as it lowers the levels of serotonin in our brain. Regular consumption changes the chemistry of the brain and results in the depletion of our mental health,” Mrinmay Kumar Das, Senior Consultant at Jaypee Hospital in Noida told IANS. “To increase the brain volume and to deal with all sorts of situations, abstinence is required,” he added.

LONDON: Women, take note -- A treadmill exercise regime can reduce period pain and improve long-term quality of life, says a study. According to the study published in the journal Contemporary Clinical Trials, the researchers conducted a trial over a seven-month period to see how treadmill exercise benefited women suffering from primary dysmenorrhea, commonly known as menstruation pain. “Women who have painful periods often take steps to actively avoid exercise -- after all when you are in pain it is often the last thing that you want to partake in,” said Leica ClaydonMueller, Professor at Anglia Ruskin University. For the study, women aged between 18-43 were asked to take part in a supervised aerobic training regime three times a week for four weeks, beginning the day after the end of their menstrual period, followed by unsupervised home exercise for six

LONDON: Researchers, including one of an Indian-origin, have identified a blood pressure-lowering drug — non-dihydropyridine, a calcium channel blocker —that may increase the risk of a bowel condition called diverticulosis. This condition causes small bulges or pouches to appear in the lining of the intestine. Particularly affecting the elderly (as many as 65 per cent of people aged above 85 may be affected), diverticulosis can in some cases lead to a medical emergency if the pouches become infected or burst. According to the findings, the genetic variants were linked to lower heart disease and stroke risk. —IANS

months. Their results were compared with a control group, who carried out their usual regimes. The study found that the women who took part in the supervised exercise reported 6 per cent less pain after four weeks and 22 per cent less pain while continuing the exercise for an additional six months. Significant benefits of exercise were reported after the seven-month reporting period for other study measures, including a higher quality of life and improved daily functioning. However, the participants did not report any increase in sleep quality following the trial. According to the researchers, the study examined the effect of treadmill exercise on measures such as pain intensity, sleep quality and overall quality of life. This trial demonstrated that exercise significantly reduced pain for those people taking part in the program and they also reported reduced pain levels after four and seven months. —IANS

feeling of safety and good night’s sleep are the things that matter the most to sick kids in hospital. Published in the Journal of Advanced Nursing, the study fills a gap in our understanding of how children are feeling in hospital settings. For the study, researchers developed the ‘Needs of Children Questionnaire’ (NCQ), the first of its kind to measure children’s selfreported psychosocial, physical and emotional needs in paediatric wards. “Development of the NCQ is part of an international movement to place children as central to care delivery, which honours the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child,” said Mandie Foster, Professor at the Edith Cowan Uni-

Hospitalized Kid.(Photo: wwwtexaschildrens)

versity in Australia. The research team assessed 193 school-aged children in paediatric settings in Australia and New Zealand. Children’s most important needs were identified as: To know they

are safe and will be looked after, to get enough sleep at night, hospital staff listening to them, to have places their parents can go to for food and drinks. Over 1.7 million Australian children were admitted to hospitals in

2016-17, researchers said, which emphasizes on the importance of this study. “As adults, we often make assumptions about children’s needs and wants, but hospitals can be a scary and unfamiliar environment for many children and we shouldn’t assume we know how they are feeling,” Foster said. “Being listened to and understood can give children an added sense of confidence about the situation they find themselves in” she added. And from a medical point of view, child self-reports are essential to inform healthcare delivery, policy, research and theory development, said the researchers. Children's needs are often interconnected to those of their parents, so if parents feel informed, valued and cared for, then their children are more likely to feel relaxed.

Smart ways to wear your jeans IANS, NEW DELHI

I

f you want to up your style game, just wearing trendy bottoms like boyfriend jeans and culottes is not the answer. Styling them ensures you stand out and look like a diva, say experts. Abhishek Yadav, Design Head, Spykar Lifestyle, and Nelson Jaffery, Head of Design, Liva, have a few suggestions: Boyfriend jeans: These jeans channel the ‘laid-back chic’ vibe infused with boyish charm, courtesy of the boyfriend. They have a relaxed, slouchy fit but are also available in tapered and slimmer versions. For a grungy, subversive look, opt for a pair of distressed, washed out boyfriend jeans. Pair it with a plain

white tee and an oversized denim shirt. Accessorise with white sneakers and cowboy belt. High waist skinny jeans: They

have become something of a wardrobe classic. They are universally stylish and everyone owns a pair. They are the go to jeans for low-key days. For a chic and stylish look, pair your high waist skinny jeans with a bustier top or a fitted crop top. Layer them with a smart casual blazer and stilettos for a soiree or a fancy evening. Culottes: Culottes epitomise the versatility and stylishness of the modern city girl. With a wider silhouette and mid-calf length, denim culottes are the ‘street style stopper’ of the season. Style them with crop top to break the monotony of the culottes. Keep in mind the fabric of your culottes to ensure the fall flatters you. Fabrics like viscose are ideal for such looks.

Braces won’t guarantee happiness, self-confidence SYDNEY: Braces can help you get straight teeth but it may not always bring happiness and self-confidence, a study suggests. Published in the journal Orthodontics and Craniofacial Research, the study followed 448 13year-old kids from South Australia in 1988 and 1989. By the time that they turned 30 in 2005 and 2006 more than a third of them had received orthodontic treatment. “The study, examined if having braces lead to a greater level of happiness or psychosocial out-

comes, later in life. There was a pattern of higher psychosocial scores in people who did not have orthodontic treatment meaning people who hadn’t had braces fitted were significantly more optimistic than the ones that did have braces,” said Esma Dogramaci, Professor at the University of Adelaide. “Those who didn’t have braces had varying levels of crooked teeth, just like those who had braces treatment — ranging from mild through to very severe,” Dogramaci said. —IANS

Downward tilt makes you look dominant IANS, TORONTO

R

esearchers have found that tucking the chin and lowering the head by just 10 degrees makes people seem more dominating. The study, published in the journal Psychological Science, shows that facial features are not the only source of this information, we also draw social inferences from the head itself. “We show that tilting one’s head downward systematically changes the way the face is perceived, such that a neutral face, a face with no muscle movement or facial expression, appears to be more dominant

when the head is tilted down,” said researchers Zachary Witkower and Jessica Tracy of the University of British Columbia. This effect is caused by the fact that tilting one’s head downward leads to the artificial appearance of lowered and V-shaped eyebrows, which in turn elicit perceptions of aggression, intimidation and dominance. Subtle shifts of the head can have profound effects on social perception, partly because they can have large effects on the appearance of the face, said the researchers. For the findings, the research team designed a series of studies to

investigate whether the angle of head position might influence social perception, even when facial features remain neutral. In one online study with 101 participants, the researchers generated variations of avatars with neutral facial expressions and one of three head positions: tilted upward 10 degrees, neutral or tilted downward 10 degrees. The results showed that participants rated the avatars with downward head tilt as more dominant than those with neutral or upwardtitled heads. Ultimately, these findings could have practical implications for our everyday social interactions
