Impeachment: Public hearings set to begin The announcement comes after several weeks of closed-door depositions by former and current Trump administration officials with the US House panels IANS, WASHINGTON

Trump confirms Erdogan’s visit to WH WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has confirmed that his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan would visit Washington next week, ending the speculation that the latter might call off the trip given the delicate bilateral ties. Trump tweeted on Wednesday that he had “a very good call” with Erdogan, adding that he looked forward to meeting his Turkish counterpart on November 13 at the White House, reports Xinhua news agency. “Also talked about their Border with Syria, the eradication of terrorism, the ending of hostilities with the Kurds, and many other topics,” Trump added. He said that Erdogan informed him that the Islamic State (IS) prisoners that escaped during the recent military conflict in northern Syria had been recaptured. Erdogan’s upcoming visit to the US comes at a delicate moment of bilateral ties. The Turkish President recently signaled that he had second thoughts about the planned visit due to measures that the US legislative adopted against Ankara. The US House of Representatives last week overwhelmingly approved two bills which proved to be highly offending for Ankara. One officially recognizes the mass killings of Ottoman Armenians during the First World War as genocide and the second was aimed at slapping sanctions on Turkey over its military operations in northern Syria. —IANS
ouse Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff has announced that the panel’s first open hearings as part of an impeachment inquiry into US President Donald Trump will begin next week. Schiff, in a tweet on Wednesday, said they will hear from William Taylor, the top US diplomat in Ukraine, and George Kent, an expert on Ukraine and Russia who serves as a deputy assistant secretary at the State Department, on November 13, Xinhua reported. Republicans suffer setbacks in state polls ARUL LOUIS, NEW YORK
U
S President Donald Trump’s Republican Party has suffered setbacks in two states, losing the governorship of Kentucky and the legislature in Virginia a year away from the presidential election. Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin lost re-election very narrowly on November 5 by less than half-a-per cent or about 5,100 votes, but the
loss is significant because Trump had won Kentucky in the 2016 presidential election with a 30 per cent lead. The defeat of Bevin, for whom Trump campaigned, was tempered by the victory of Republican candidates in five other state-wide offices like secretary of state and attorney general, though with smaller margins compared to Trump’s showing an erosion of Republican support.

In Virginia both the upper and lower chambers of the state legislature flipped to the Democrats giving them full control of the government for the first time in many decades. Democrat Governor Ralph
Northam was already in office. The Republicans kept the governorship of Mississippi with Lieutenant Governor Tate Reeves winning with a six per cent lead, much lower than Trump’s 17.8 per cent.

following “extensive, constructive and serious” talks in recent weeks. “The two parties have agreed to eliminate tariffs as they continue
making progress. If China and the US reach a ‘phase one’ agreement, the two parties should eliminate tariffs simultaneously and in the
same proportion,” he added. The negotiating teams hope to resolve the conflict “based on equality and mutual respect”, Gao said. On October 26, the Chinese government confirmed the progress of negotiations towards a partial trade agreement and said that the technical consultations on part of the text had already been completed. US President Donald Trump described the pact as “phase one” of a process could have as many as three stages and suspended his plans to raise tariffs on imports from the Asian giant. Meanwhile, China promised to increase its purchases of US agricultural products to between $40 billion and $50 billion.

he waters of Saryu are placid but run deep. There is no tension in the air but the apprehension is palpable. As the clock ticks away to the judgment day, the khaki presence in this holy town increases by the hour. Policemen stand at every ten feet or so and though no restrictions on movement have been enforced as yet, the ‘military presence’ is unnerving. “The presence of many ‘military men’ (read CRPF) makes us believe that trouble is on its way. Caught in impeachment crossfire White House official Kashyap Patel, an Indian-American, has been caught in the crossfire ARUL LOUIS, NEW YORK
A
n Indian-American White House official has been caught in the crossfire of internal politics arising from the Ukraine controversy that has engulfed President Donald Trump in an impeachment. The expertise of Kashyap Patel, the National Security Council’s (NSC) senior Director of counterterrorism, on Ukraine has been questioned by another NSC official, Lt Col Alexander Vindman, during the impeachment inquiry hearings, Politico reported on Wednesday. The sniping brings to the open the conflicts inside the Trump administration between those like Patel, who are considered his loyalists, and those opposed to him. Vindman told the secret inquiry that Patel had “misrepresented” his expertise on Ukraine to Trump, Politico reported. He said that had been prevented

from participating in a briefing for Trump on Ukraine because the President believed Patel was the expert on that country instead of himself, Politico reported. Vindman said that the NSC Senior Director for European and Russian affairs, Fiona Hill, told him
that she and then-National Security Adviser John Bolton felt that his presence at the briefing would create “an uncomfortable situation,” according to Politico. The Washington Post also gave an account matching it in major details.
Politico had earlier reported that Hill testified before the impeachment inquiry that Trump thought Patel was in charge of Ukraine policy for the NSC. Vindman, who was born in Ukraine and came to the US as a refugee when he was a child, is a decorated veteran of the Iraq war. He was on the line listening to Trump’s phone call with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky in July during which he asked for help in investigating former Vice President Joe Biden’ son’s connections to a Ukrainian gas company and if his father had interfered in an investigation of the company. Vindman has been hailed a hero by the Democrats and the media for his testimony against Trump. He had asserted that Trump had undermined national security by asking Ukraine for a favour against the Bidens because that could undermine the bipartisan support for Kyiv.

r Neeraj Sharma from the University of New South Wales (UNSW), Sydney — considered one of the global leaders in the use of neutron and X-ray scattering methods to study materials for next-generation lithium-ion batteries — has won the ‘Early Career Researcher of the Year (Physical Sciences)’. NSW Premier Gladys Berejik-

The award was given for his work in lithium-ion batteries found in electronic devices, electric vehicles and the grid, as well as next-generation battery systems such as sodium-ion batteries that will leave minimal environmental

While he said that he was not allowed to make some changes to the reconstruction of the TrumpZelensky phone conversation that was made public, it did not appear from leaked accounts of his impeachment testimony that he had established that Trump had made the Ukrainian probe of the Bidens a condition for releasing aid, as has been alleged. Vindman’s questioning of Patel’s competence gives and insight into internal politics of the Trump administration where officials are split between Trump loyalists and those whom he calls the members of the “Deep State” - a reference to the entrenched bipartisan Washington establishment that is ranged against him. By focusing on electrochemical reactions in batteries, Dr Sharma aims to better understand how electrode composition, and structure at the atomic level, influence performance. His research group is also exploring inherently safe solidstate batteries, energy-dense lithium-sulfur batteries, dual function solar batteries and methods for recycling.

Congress to firm up stand on Ayodhya verdict
Even as party managers are keen to ensure least damage, contrary views are emerging within the party, with some leaders anxious about the political fallout of the verdict SYED IMAM MOZIZ, NEW DELHI
N
ot wanting a repeat of the political embarrassment it faced when party leaders spoke in different voices after abrogation of Article 370, the Congress is planning to formalize its strategy on the Ayodhya verdict to speak in one voice. The Congress Working Committee is likely to come up with a resolution on the Ayodhya issue, with the Supreme Court verdict on the matter expected anytime soon. The consistent official line of the Congress has been that the party wants everyone to abide by the apex court verdict. However, contrary views are emerging within the party, with some leaders anxious about the political fallout of the verdict. But party managers are keen to ensure least damage this time round. A resolution is likely at the CWC, to give clarity on the Ayodhya issue to all Congressmen, a

leader told IANS. Congress’ Uttar Pradesh leaders had a discussion on the issue with party general secretary Priyanka Gandhi, as to how the party would tackle the verdict - irrespective of which way it goes. During the talks, the party had said that there
should be no criticism of the apex court judgement by any leader as party’s constant position is that it will abide by the apex court verdict, a party source told IANS. The party has also cautioned its leaders not to make any comments in the media or public which could
be damaging to the party’s political prospects. In Rae Bareli too, the Ayodhya issue was raised by some office bearers during a workshop held recently, on what should be the party’s line on the crucial religious issue. All the political parties, includ-
ing the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, have been appealing for calm ahead of the verdict. An interfaith dialogue was also initiated by Union Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi where leaders of RSS were present. A top Congress source said that during the CWC meeting on Sunday, party’s interim chief Sonia Gandhi would take stock of the political situation in the country in the wake of the recent assembly election results and the economic slowdown. The Congress is trying to forge an alliance with all like-minded parties to jointly oppose the policies of the Modi government. The party may also decide the date of the AICC plenary to ratify the presidentship of Sonia Gandhi, said a source. Rahul Gandhi is expected to return from his foreign sojourn by November 10. By virtue of being former party president he is also a member of the apex Congress decision making body.
Needed: A roadmap on stopping stubble burning Punjab contributes maximum to stubble burning and despite warning fires have not reduced SUMIT SAXENA, NEW DELHI
T
he Supreme Court on Wednesday made scathing observation on the officials’ lackadaisical approach towards pollution, posed critical queries to the Chief Secretaries of UP, Haryana and Punjab, and grilled them on “immediate steps to stop stubble burning.” “The right to life is involved. We need a roadmap to stop stubble burning. Do governments want humans to die due to stubble burning”, the apex court Bench, comprising Justice Arun Mishra and Justice Deepak Mishra, told the chief secretaries present in the court to explain the measures taken by their states to stop farmers from burning stubble. The Delhi Chief Secretary was
also present to explain steps taken to contain local air pollution. At a close to three-hour hearing, the court rejected Attorney General K.K. Venugopal’s suggestion of dividing stubble burning region into seven zones, and allow farmers in each zone to burn stubble in turn. “We outrightly reject the suggestion, burning is not a solution,” Justice Mishra said. Venugopal insisted it was difficult to stop over 2 lakh farmers from burning stubble. When Justice Mishra asked why the government couldn’t purchase stubble at the panchayat level, the A-G said he had not discussed it with officers before making the suggestion, which he felt was practical. The hearing began with grilling of the Punjab Chief Secretary, who said due to lack of funds and
state’s indebtedness farmers couldn’t be incentivized to stop burning stubble. “We can’t leave the country in this situation, why only burning is the solution,” said the court insisting it expects war-level response from the state government on the stubble burning issue. The court, after learning that Punjab contributes maximum to stubble burning and despite warning fires have not reduced, warned the government it would not spare single officer of the state government for not acting on pollution. “People can’t be left to die...you (high-level officers) sit in your ivory towers and let people to die,” the court observed. Questioning the Chief Secretaries of Haryana and UP, the court said their failure to stop

stubble burning had led to public health emergency in Delhi-NCR. “Don’t tell us about having meetings with officials to resolve the issue. We want action and a roadmap to immediately stop stubble burning,” the court said. Concluding the hearing, the Supreme Court asked the UP, Haryana and Punjab governments to provide Rs 100 per quintal assistance within seven days to prevent small and marginal farmers from burning stubble.
The court also said agriculture was the backbone of the country and it’s the duty of the government to protect small and marginal farmers. Lack of funds couldn’t be a ground for the government to neglect them. “Provide stubble managing machinery free to small and marginal farmers for the time being, as it will address stubble burning”, said Justice Mishra insisting on incentivizing farmers to help stop burning stubble.

Anti-Brexit parties agree UK poll pact The pact comes after Plaid Cymru’s leader Adam Price wrote to several pro-Remain parties earlier this year, calling on them to work together in a snap general election IANS, LONDON
T
he three anti-Brexit parties — Liberal Democrats, Plaid Cymru, Green Party — have formed an electoral pact, agreeing not to stand against each other in dozens of seats during the December 12 general elections. The three parties will announce details of the deal on Thursday, but it is thought to cover between 60 and 70 constituencies, reports the BBC. Such a pact means two of the parties would agree not to field a candidate, boosting the third candidate’s chances. In Wales, the pact will cover 11 of its 40 seats. Outside of Wales, the pact will simply be a two-way agreement between the Liberal Democrats and the Greens.

‘Baghdadi’s wife in custody for a year’ ANKARA: Turkish authorities have held slain Islamic State (IS) leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi’s wife in custody for over a year and were exploring ways to deport her, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said here on Thursday. Baghdadi was the world’s most wanted terrorist until his death last month during a US special forces raid on a property in the Syrian province of Idlib, reports Efe news. “His wife has been in our hands for a year or a year and a half,” Erdogan said, confirming the news that first emerged on Wednesday. All three parties have already launched their election campaigns. They support another Brexit referendum and want to Remain in the
European Union (EU). Speaking after the formation of the pact on Wednesday, Liberal Democrats leader Jo Swinson said:
“We are delighted that an agreement has been reached... This is a significant moment for all people who want to support Remain candidates across the country.” The pact comes after Plaid Cymru’s leader Adam Price wrote to several pro-Remain parties earlier this year, calling on them to work together in a snap general election. Last week, the Brexit Party’s Nigel Farage called on Prime Minister Boris Johnson to form a similar election pact, the BBC said. But Johnson rejected the offer and said he would not enter into election pacts. Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has also ruled out the idea of entering electoral pacts with rival parties. Johnson officially launched the ruling Conservative Party’s poll campaign for the December 12 general elections in Birmingham, saying
his Brexit deal “delivers everything I campaigned for”. Amidst supporters holding signs with messages including “Get Brexit Done”, Johnson took the stage where he told the crowd that he had “no choice” but to hold an election, adding that Parliament was “paralysed” and “blocked”, the BBC reported. He said once Brexit was done, a Conservative government could get on with “better education” and “better infrastructure”. The Prime Minister told the audience the deadlock over Brexit had been like a “bendy bus jack-knifed on a yellow box junction (which) no-one can get round it and it is blocking in every direction”, adding “we can’t go on like this”. He said the thing he was “most proud of” during his 100 days in office was his Brexit deal.

Inadequate protection against import surge, insufficient differential with China, possible circumvention of rules of origin, keeping the base year as 2014, and no credible assurances on market access and non-tariff barriers, the sources said. “This reflects both our assessment of the current global situation, as well as of the fairness and balance of the agreement,” Vijay Thakur Singh, Secretary East in the Ministry of External Affairs, said at a media briefing after the RCEP summit. “India had significant issues of core interest that remained unresolved,” she said.

Chandrababu Naidu to fast over sand shortage in Andhra Naidu’s decision to undertake the fast follows the ‘long march’ by Jana Sena party leader Pawan Kalyan in Visakhapatnam which evoked good response IANS, AMARAVATI
F
ormer Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu will undertake day-long fast at Vijayawada on November 14 over sand shortage, which has hit the construction industry and led to suicide by some workers last month. Addressing Telugu Desam Party (TDP) workers in Vijayawada on Tuesday, Naidu demanded a free sand policy like the one implemented by his government. Naidu’s decision to undertake
BRIEFS Row over English medium govt schools AMARAVATI: The Andhra Pradesh government’s decision to introduce English as the medium of instruction in all government schools has triggered a controversy with a section of academicians and teachers opposing the move. The Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddyled government in Andhra Pradesh has announced converting all government, Mandal Praja Parishad (MPP) and Zilla Parishad (ZP) schools into English medium schools.
Andhra police to grill serial killer VIJAYAWADA: The police in Andhra Pradesh’s Eluru town is seeking the custody of the man accused of killing 10 persons with cyanide laced ‘prasadam’ during the last 20 months. West Godavari Superintendent of Police Navdeep Singh Grawel told IANS on Wednesday that they have applied for police remand of Vellanki Simhadri, alias Siva, for further interrogation. The police hope to gather more evidence of the shocking case during the questioning of the accused. The horror came to light on Tuesday after the police announced the arrest of 38-year-old Siva, who used the same modus operandi to commit the crime as was used by Kerala’s Jolly Joseph, the woman who was recently arrested for killing six relatives over 14 years using cyanide. —IANS

the fast follows the ‘long march’ by Jana Sena party leader Pawan Kalyan in Visakhapatnam on November 3, which evoked good response. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has also organized ‘sand satyagrah’ to protest against the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) government’s failure to address the issue. Pawan Kalyan claimed that sand shortage had claimed 36 lives in October and pushed around 30 lakh workers dependent on the construction sector into distress. Dismissing the opposition’s alle-
gations as false propaganda, the government has attributed sand shortage to the recent heavy rains and floods. Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy said the sand shortage was temporary and would be over soon after the floods. He alleged that during the past five years, the TDP government allowed sand mafia, which was drawing sand mechanically and indiscriminately. “We are allowing only manual mining, which makes a lot of difference. The guidelines of the new sand policy are designed to benefit poor people,” he said.

K.R. Ramesh Kumar in connection with their disqualification. In the backdrop of such a scenario, the court said that no further order was required at present. “As the judgment in these matters has already been reserved on October 25, 2019, no further orders are required at present,” said the court. Earlier during the day, the apex court said that it will look into the new material brought forth by senior advocate Kapil Sibal in the Karnataka MLAs’ disqualification case. Sibal, who represents the Congress, wanted Yediruarappa’s audio
tape to be considered in deciding the disqualified legislators’ plea. Bypolls to 15 out of 17 seats represented by the disqualified MLAs is scheduled for December 5. The apex court observed that the issue related to the hospitality provided to the rebel MLAs in Mumbai, allegedly by the BJP, has been brought out during the hearing already. “You have already argued that the rebel Karnataka MLAs were taken to Mumbai. We have already taken a note of everything,” said the bench headed by Justice N.V. Ramana.

ment feels that there is no need for a CBI probe. The accused will get no support from any quarters. The High Court is also looking into the need for a CBI probe. The govern-
ment does not think a CBI probe is needed and now let the High Court decide,” said Vijayan. The Kerala PSC’s credibility took a beating after a campus
brawl at the Trivandrum University College where a student was stabbed, led to a probe which found discrepancies in the conduct of its examinations. The victim, Akhil was stabbed by a group whose members were all connected to the CPI-M-affiliated Students Federation of India. With the media taking this case in a big way and the civil society also joining in, the police have stumbled upon crucial evidence that things were not fair in the PSC recruitment process, with the two prime accused of the stabbing having managed to get top ranks in the police constable examination. Anup Jacob of the Kerala Congress said the credibility of the PSC has been dented beyond repair.

WhatsApp Pay may put Indian digital banking at risk: Experts
Facebook reveals data leakage
WhatsApp said that safety and security of users remains the highest priority IANS, NEW DELHI
A
fter WhatsApp accounts of 121 Indians were compromised by the Israeli spyware Pegasus, experts have warned that the payment feature the Facebook-owned platform is planning to launch in India may put the digital banking system at risk. “WhatsApp payment needs to be seen with microscopic eye, primarily because in payment you will be dealing with sensitive personal data and cyber security is going to be an essential building block component for WhatsApp to demonstrate its due diligence,” Pavan Duggal, one of the nation’s top cyber law experts, told IANS. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (Meity) has already expressed dissatisfac-

tion over the manner WhatsApp communicated about the compromised accounts. The piece of NSO Group software called Pegasus allegedly exploited WhatsApp’s video calling system by installing the spyware
via missed calls to snoop on 1,400 users globally. The devices were compromised with just a WhatsApp video call. In May, WhatsApp, which has 400 million users in India, urged its 1.5 billion global users to
upgrade the app after discovering the vulnerability. “WhatsApp’s recent operations have shown that it’s difficult for the government to get information from it. WhatsApp is an intermediary under the Information Technology Act and is mandated to exercise due diligence under the law. But it has failed to do due diligence,” Duggal said. The Facebook-owned company is learnt to have countered the government charge that it didn’t inform it about a privacy breach on the messaging platform. WhatsApp didn’t even comply with the data breach notification law in India, Duggal said. “It (WhatsApp) didn’t follow reasonable security practices as mandated in Section 43A of the IT Act, 2000. In fact, it abetted the crime of un-authorized access too.

According to Google, Android is on over 2.5 billion devices and this popularity also makes it an attractive target for abuse. The abuse can take the form of hidden malware or secret code designed to spy and drain away sensitive user data. “Working closely with our industry partners gives us an opportunity to collaborate with

SAN FRANCISCO: In yet another data breach, Facebook on Wednesday revealed that at least 100 app developers may have accessed Facebook users’ data for months, confirming that at least 11 partners “accessed group members’ information in the last 60 days”. The social networking giant found that the apps — primarily social media management and video streaming apps — retained access to group member information, like names and profile pictures in connection with group activity, from the Groups API (application programming interface). “Although we’ve seen no evidence of abuse, we will ask them to delete any member data they may have retained and we will conduct audits to confirm that it has been deleted,” the company said in a statement. “We’ve removed or restricted a number of our developer APIs, such as the Groups API, which provides an interface between Facebook and apps that can integrate with a group,” it added. Facebook is facing scrutiny after personal data of 87 million users were harvested by UK-based political consulting firm Cambridge Analytica. M
ore than 11,000 scientists in 153 countries have declared a climate emergency around the world and also warned of ‘untold suffering’ unless there is significant transformation in the way humans live. The study by 11,258 scientists called the “World scientists’ warning of a climate emergency,” marks the first time a large group of scientists has formally come out in favour of labelling climate change an ‘emergency’. Scientists said they want the public to ‘understand the magnitude of this crisis, track progress, and realign priorities for alleviating climate change’
Bill Ripple and Christopher Wolf of Oregon State University, along with William Moomaw, a Tufts
University climate scientist, and researchers in Australia and South Africa.
The findings focus on six key objectives: replacing fossil fuels; cutting pollutants like methane and soot; restoring and protecting ecosystems; eating less meat; converting the economy to one that is carbon-free and stabilizing population growth. “Despite 40 years of global climate negotiations, with few exceptions, we have generally conducted business as usual and have largely failed to address this predicament,” the study stated. Although there are some positive indicators such as declining birth rates and a rise in renewable energy use, most indicators suggest
humans are rapidly heading in the wrong direction, they said. Backward steps include rising meat consumption, more air travel, chopping down forests faster than ever and increase in global carbon dioxide emissions. Scientists said they want the public to ‘understand the magnitude of this crisis, track progress, and realign priorities for alleviating climate change’. The research notes that the global decline in fertility rates has ‘substantially slowed’ during the past 20 years, and calls for ‘bold and drastic’ changes in economic growth and population policies to cut greenhouse gas emissions.

In today’s age, wedding creatives have undoubtedly become extraordinarily fancy, with graphic designers devoting hours to make them just about perfect. Nevertheless, these carefully designed physical copies add up to the costs of your wedding tremendously. Wedding cards include significant investment across time, effort and costs, the most strenuous chore while opting for wedding cards is the requirement to personally deliver it to family and friends. Also, another problem with physical copies is that you can run out of cards! All you have to do is send your guests the link to your website. ingredients necessary to construct a ‘loneliness’ prediction system. As part of the study, published in the journal BMJ, researchers analysed public accounts from users based in Pennsylvania and found that 6,202 accounts used words such as ‘lonely’ or ‘alone’ more than five times between 2012 and 2016. Comparing the entire Twitter timelines of these users to a matched group who did not have such language included their posts, the researchers showed that ‘lonely’ users tweeted nearly twice as much and were much more likely to do so at night. When the tweets were analysed via several different linguistic analytic models, the users who posted about loneliness had an extremely high association with anger, depression and anxiety, when compared to the ‘non-lonely’ group. Additionally, the lonely groups
were significantly associated with tweeting about struggles with relationships (for example, using phrases like ‘want somebody’ or ‘no one to’) and substance use (‘smoke,’ ‘weed,’ and ‘drunk’) “On Twitter, we found lonely users expressing a need for social support, and it appears that the use of expletives and the expression of anger is a sign of that being unfulfilled,” Guntuku said. Users in the group that didn’t post about loneliness seemed to display some social connections, as they were found to be more likely to engage in conversations, especially by including others’ user names (using ‘@twitter_handle’) in their tweets. In the future, the researchers hope to develop a better measure of the different dimensions of loneliness that online users are feeling and expressing.

‘Drive’: Neither Fast, Nor Furious
Y
-a-w-n. We’re back to the same old circus - Bollywood wants to make a Hollywood thriller yet again, and this time they have raided Netflix for release space. Stream and scream away if you have the patience, for this one’s dumbly rehashing the “ast & Furious flavor, cocktailed with tricks that reveal the hangover of assorted Hollywood hits, notably Ocean’s Eleven. For whatever remaining runtime they had to fill up, the “Dhoom” formula is stuffed in (which itself never looked very original in the first pace). It doesn’t take 10 minutes into the film for the awful question to hammer your brain: Why was Drive made at all in the first place? If it had to be made, why did Netflix have to pick this up? The film, with all its supercars and sizzle, is like a ramshackle ride on four wheels that struggles to keep The utter plasticity of the film hits you right away in the opening sequence as Jacqueline Fernandez alights from a high-octane car at a late-night race at India Gate. She is Tara, an expert driver who has just won the race, but she is dressed for racing as if she has arrived at a cocktail dinner - in an evening

Karan Johar has produced this film, which marks the return of writer-director Tarun Mansukhani, who made “Dostana” in 2008 and vanished from the scene. Exactly
why it has taken Mansukhani 11 years to write and execute the erratic mess is beyond comprehension. Mansukhani and his creative team don’t even look like they have brainstormed in an effort to craft a gripping movie. Everything from the suspense drama to the action - even the odd comic hint and the corny chemistry of the leads — seems too superficial to leave an impact. Sushant tries his best to make most of a character that hardly reveals any thought process. This isn’t a film that will let him score either as actor or star and, coming after Chhichhore, it is a gaffe of a choice. —Vinayak Chakravorty

Deep sleep can reset the anxious brain A sleepless night can trigger up to a 30% rise in anxiety levels, the study said IANS, NEW YORK
R
esearchers have found that the type of sleep most apt to calm and reset the anxious brain is deep sleep, also known as nonrapid eye movement (NREM) slow-wave sleep, a state in which neural oscillations become highly synchronized, and heart rates and blood pressure drops. A sleepless night can trigger up to a 30 per cent rise in anxiety levels, researchers from the University of California said. “We have identified a new function of deep sleep, one that decreases anxiety overnight by reorganizing connections in the brain,” said study senior author Professor Matthew Walker. “Deep sleep seems to be a natural anxiolytic (anxiety inhibitor), so

Liver cancer deaths 50% up in last 10 years: Study LONDON: Liver cancer deaths have increased by around 50 per cent in the last decade and have tripled since records began, researchers have warned. The new mortality data from Cancer Research UK, shows that there were around 5,700 deaths from liver cancer in 2017 in the UK, which is the highest ever yearly number of deaths recorded. This has climbed from 3,200 deaths in 2007. Of all cancer types, liver cancer has had the largest increase in deaths over the last decade and the most rapid rise in deaths since the UK records began. “Unfortunately, progress in treating liver cancer has been painfully slow and we desperately need more options for patients. Another problem is the rise in the number of people being diagnosed, which has meant
we are losing more people to this disease than ever before,” said researcher Helen Reeves, Professor at Newcastle University. Experts believe that death rates have risen so steeply because the number of people being diagnosed with liver cancer has also increased — by 60 per cent in the last decade — and survival is typically low. It’s one of the hardest cancers to treat, and fiveyear survival can range from anywhere between six per cent and 37 per cent depending on age and gen—IANS der, the researchers said.

ncreased consumption of omega-3 fats is widely promoted globally because of a common belief that it will protect against conditions such as anxiety and depression, but researchers have now found that fish oil supplements have little or no effect on such conditions. Omega-3 is a type of fat. Small amounts are essential for good health and can be found in the food that we eat including nuts and seeds and fatty fish, such as salmon. They are also readily available as over-the-counter supplements and are widely bought and used. The study, published in the British Journal of Psychiatry, found that omega-3 supplements offer no benefit. “This large systematic review included information from many

thousands of people over long periods,” said study lead author Lee Hooper, from University of East Anglia in UK. For the findings, more than 41,470 participants were randomized to consume more long-chain omega-3 fats (fish oils), or maintain their usual intake, for at least six months.
They found that the supplements had little or no effect in preventing depression or anxiety symptoms. “Oily fish can be a very nutritious food as part of a balanced diet but there is no demonstrable value in people taking omega-3 oil supplements for the prevention or treatment of depression and anxiety,” the study said.

f you are a regular smoker, quit now as researchers have found that tobacco smoking may increase your risk of developing depression and schizophrenia. “Individuals with mental illness are often overlooked in our efforts to reduce smoking prevalence, leading to health inequalities,” said study lead author Robyn Wootton from the University of Bristol. “Our work shows that we should be making every effort to
prevent smoking initiation and encourage smoking cessation because of the consequences to mental health as well as physical health,” Wootton added. For the study, published in the journal Psychological Medicine, the research team used UK Biobank data from 462,690 individuals of European ancestry, comprising 8 per cent current smokers and 22 per cent former smokers. The team applied an analytic approach called Mendelian randomization, which uses genetic
variants associated with an exposure (e.g. smoking) to support stronger conclusions about causeand-effect relationships. “The increasing availability of genetic data in large studies, together with the identification of genetic variants associated with a range of behaviors and health outcomes, is transforming our ability to use techniques such as Mendelian randomization to understand causal pathways,” said study senior author Marcus Munafïo.

Balance Problems - A Leading Cause of Falls in Older Adults BY MARK ROSENBERG, M.D. CHICAGO,IL- When I treat older patients who have taken a recent fall, they often say the same thing: “I never thought this would happen to me.” Doctors and other health professionals have done a good job of informing the public about the dangers that balance problems present to older adults. Equally important, however, is providing solutions so patients can better manage balance problems and avoid falls in the first place. What Causes Balance Problems? Statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention state that over one-third of adults ages 65 years and older fall each year. This is worrisome because falls are a leading cause of fractures, especially to the hips and legs. One bad fall can rob an otherwise healthy individual of his or her mobility, creating problems for years to come. Falls are also the leading cause of injury deaths for older adults. There are various reasons why so many falls occur. As you age, you are more likely to be diagnosed with conditions that cause balance problems. Here are some of the most common health problems that effect balance: 4 Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) - More likely to occur in people over 60, BPPV causes a brief, but intense spinning sensation when you move your head. The vertigo is most pronounced when you get out of bed or tilt your head to look up. This is caused by calcium stones in the inner ear, which may be the result of an infection, injury or aging. 4Labyrinthitis - This inflammation of the inner ear results in dizziness and loss of balance. It affects the labyrinth, or the organ that controls balance. 4Ménière’s Disease- While the cause is unknown, Ménière’s can occur at any age. It is a balance disorder resulting in vertigo, intermittent hearing loss, ringing in the ears, and a feeling of fullness in the ears. 4Medication - Blood pressure medications are often the source of balance problems. A class of drugs known as “ototoxic” have the side effect of damaging the inner ear, therefore effecting balance. 4Stroke - This disease of the circulatory system not only causes falls in some cases, but can also be the source of balance problems. Healthy Solutions for Better Balance How can you prevent becoming part of the 33 percent of seniors who report falls? If you have one of the conditions described above or take medications that cause balance problems, there are steps you can take to protect yourself. If at any
Arrest Made in Shooting of Innocent Teen Girl in Queens, NY
BY A STAFF WRITER QIUEEMS. NY - Ashley Armoogan 16, is now home, but she’ll never forget the events of Monday, October 28. On that day, Armoogan was walking to the bus after finishing class at the New Dawn Charter School in Jamaica, Queens when she heard gunfire and began running. Armoogan had been shot in the shoulder and was rushed to the hospital. Police say she was an innocent victim of gang violence and that her shooting is likely related to the fatal killing of 14-year-old Aamir Griffin, who was struck by a stray bullet while at a Queens basketball court on Saturday. Police say they have made an arrest in Armoogan’s case and have two others in custody for a separate shooting incident earlier that same day. Armoogan was released from the hospital, much to the relief of her worried family. Ashley’s dad Ravie Armoogan, an engineer working in the Manhattan federal court building said the recent violence has shaken his family and thinking to move may be Florida.

time you find yourself experiencing trouble with balance I highly recommend you see your doctor as soon as possible for a diagnosis. Staying healthy is the key to better balance. Upper respiratory infections and viruses can cause labyrinthitis, so do not wait before seeking help. Yearly flu shots are a good way to prevent these infections. Lifestyle can be a factor and stress, smoking, fatigue, and drinking alcohol excessively increase your risk for labyrinthitis. Smoking is definitely a high risk factor for stroke, so quitting is essential. Other causes of stroke, such as diabetes, heart disease and high blood pressure, must be treated to avoid balance problems. Be sure to exercise for weight control and monitor your sodium intake, as well. When it comes to Meniere’s disease, fluid imbalance in the inner ear can be improved by cutting down on salt. You can also avoid caffeine and alcohol, which cause dehydration, or loss of fluid. If you have BPPV, consult an otolaryngologist, a doctor specially trained to dislodge the calcium deposits in the inner ear by manipulating the head through various positions. If you think your prescription medicines are the cause of balance problems, talk to your doctor. He or she may be able to change your treatment or alter your dosage. With some ototoxic drugs, the inner ear will go back to normal after you stop taking them; with others, some damage may be permanent. Your doctor can best find a solution for your individual needs. Simply being aware of your body and on the lookout for balance problems is the first step in protecting yourself. Fortunately, most falls are highly preventable. If you address issues with balance early on, you will be less likely to suffer from injury, and more likely to stay active

FBI NEWS RELEASE WASHINGTON, DC - The FBI Washington Field Office has seen a recent increase in law enforcement impersonation phone calls. In this scam, fraudulent callers posing as local or federal law enforcement officers threaten to arrest the victim if money isn’t sent. The callers will often “spoof,” or fake, their phone numbers so the call appears to be coming from a local police station or federal law enforcement office on the recipient’s caller ID. These calls are fraudulent. Any legitimate law enforcement officer will not demand cash or gift cards from a member of the public. The FBI defines this type of scam as government impersonation fraud in which criminals impersonate government officials in an attempt to collect money. The criminals often threaten to extort victims with physical or financial harm or the release of sensitive data. These scammers are becoming more sophisticated and organized in their approach, are technologically savvy, and often target young persons and the elderly. To protect yourself from falling victim to this scam, be wary of answering phone calls from numbers you do not recognize. Do not send money to anybody that you do not personally know and trust. Never give out your personal information, including banking information. According to the Internet Crimes Complaint Center (IC3), 10,978 people nationwide reported being victims of government impersonation scams in 2018, with losses totaling more than $64,000,000. Anyone who feels they were the victim of this or any other online scam should report the incident immediately at ic3.gov. More information about government impersonation schemes and other online fraud schemes can be found at https://www. fbi.gov/scams-and-safety/common-fraud-schemes.

Three Indian Nationals Indicted For Extortion And Wire Fraud Relating To IRS Impersonation Scams UNITED STATE DEPT. OF JUSTICE NEWS RELEASE TAMPA, FL – United States Attorney Maria Chapa Lopez announces the unsealing of an indictment charging Nishitkumar Patel (31, Tampa), Hemalkumar Shah (27, Tampa), and Sharvil Patel (22, Tampa) with conspiracy to commit wire fraud and extortion, and substantive counts of wire fraud and extortion. The indictment also charges Nishitkumar Patel and Hemalkumar Patel with money laundering and aggravated identity theft. Each of the three defendants faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in federal prison on each count of wire fraud conspiracy, extortion conspiracy, wire fraud, and extortion. Nishitkumar Patel and Hemalkumar Patel face an additional penalty of up to 10 years in federal prison for money laundering, and a minimum mandatory consecutive two years in prison for aggravated identity theft. The indictment also notifies the defendants that the United States is seeking a money judgment in the amount of at least $2.27 million, the proceeds of the wire fraud and extortion conspiracies. According to the indictment, from 2014
through at least 2016, the defendants conspired with India-based call centers to extort money from U.S. residents by impersonating IRS officers. The defendants misled their victims to believe that they owed money to the IRS and would be arrested and fined if they did not pay their alleged back taxes immediately, so the victims would pay the defendants. The defendants collected the fraud proceeds by (1) withdrawing cash from prepaid cards purchased and funded by victims; (2) hiring other conspirators (runners) to retrieve money wired by the victims to those runners; and/or (3) hiring runners to open bank accounts into which victims deposited fraud proceeds. In order to collect the fraud proceeds, the defendants provided the runners with the
victims’ names, locations, and amount paid. The defendants directed the runners to retrieve the fraud proceeds in cash, and remit it to the defendants, often less a payment to the runner for opening the account or conducting the transaction. On October 23, 2018, law enforcement officers executed a search warrant at the home of Nishitkumar Patel and Hemalkumar Patel. Among other items, they seized approximately $50,000 in cash, hundreds of bank and wire transfer receipts, and 20 electronic devices. An indictment is merely a formal charge that a defendant has committed one or more violations of federal criminal law, and every defendant is presumed innocent unless, and until, proven guilty. This case was investigated by the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration, the Internal Revenue Service – Criminal Investigation, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations, and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. It will be prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Rachel K. Jones.
Woman Sentenced to 37 Years in Prison in Armed Home Invasions Targeting Indian Americans
Chaka Castro, 44
BY A STAFF WRITER HOUSTON, TX- The U.S. Department of Justice Oct. 28 announced that a Texas woman was sentenced to 37 years in prison for her role as the leader of several robbery crews that traveled across the United States in order to conduct armed home invasions of families of Indian and Asian descent. Chaka Castro, 44 , of Houston, Texas, was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Laurie J. Michelson of the Eastern District of Michigan, a news release said. After a five-week trial, Castro was convicted of one count of Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations conspiracy; four counts of assault with a dangerous weapon in aid of racketeering; and four counts of use of a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence, it said. According to evidence presented at trial, from 2011 to 2014, Castro and her robbery crews committed a string of home invasions in Georgia, New York, Ohio, Michigan and Texas. The leader of the robbery crews was Castro, who would generate lists of robbery targets in various states around the county, specifically families of Asian and Indian ancestry, and then assign crews to carry out the armed robberies of these families within their homes, the release notes. Once Castro assigned a crew to a particular area, members of the group would travel to that location, conduct surveillance and execute the robberies. The crews utilized a particular modus operandi in each of the robberies. They disguised their appearance with clothing and bandanas so that victims of their robberies would have difficulty identifying them. They would openly carry and brandish firearms to gain control of the victims and then immediately corral the victims, including children, into one location in the home. At least one robber would then restrain the victims with duct tape and threats of violence, as another partner would ransack the home in search of cash, jewelry and electronics to steal, it added. The group organized their trips to carry out multiple home invasion robberies over a series of days.
