Impeachment is witch-hunt: Trump US President slams the Democrats and denounces the impeachment inquiry into him as a “witch hunt” during an election rally IANS, MIAMI

U

S President Donald Trump has slammed the Democrats and denounced the impeachment inquiry into him as a “witch hunt” during an election campaign rally in Sunrise, Florida. Trump made the remarks when he met his supporters at a jampacked BB&T Center in Sunrise, which has a capacity of around 20,000 people, Efe news reported. “The economy is booming, wages are rising, crime is falling, poverty is plummeting, confidence is soaring and America is stronger than ever before,” Trump yelled before a cheering audience holding signs and wearing MAGA (“Make America Great Again”) caps. Two months after Trump changed his permanent residence from New York to his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida, the US President told the

crowd that in next year’s elections he would join the voters of the “Sunshine State, my home”. As in previous rallies, he trumpeted what he considers achievements of his administration, including some economic indicators, military spending and his Mexico border wall. “The wall is happening, it’s getting built rapidly and it’s a real wall!” he said. On this occasion, he also boasted of the killing of the Islamic State terror group leader, Abu Bakr al-Bagdadi. “A few weeks ago, US special forces brought the world’s number one terrorist to justice. The bloodthirsty savage known as al-Baghdadi is dead, finally,” he said. The US President arrived in Florida, where he will spend the Thanksgiving holiday at his Mar-aLago estate, amid the impeachment inquiry into allegations he withheld

aid to Ukraine in order to pressure its government to probe former vice president and Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden and his son for alleged corruption. He reiterated that his phone call with Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky was “a perfect phone call.” He said Zelensky has said that there was no pressure applied to him, and Trump denied that there was any quid pro quo, while continuing his attacks on the Bidens. With the “impeach-

ment witch hunt”, he said, as before with the alleged Russian 2016 campaign interference, which was investigated by former special prosecutor

US President Donald Trump.

Robert Mueller, “radical left Democrats are trying to rip our nation apart”. “They’re pushing that impeachment witch hunt and a lot of bad things are happening to them. You see what’s happening in the polls? Everybody said ‘That’s really bullshit!’,” he said. The Miami Herald reported that no recent polling that has taken the political temperature of Floridians has been made public, but a New York Times/Sienna poll a month ago found 39 per cent would vote for Trump, and 43 per cent against him. The same poll found that 49 per cent of voters supported impeachment, and a majority opposed his removal.

US, China hold talks to Trump to designate Mexican drug resolve trade conflict cartels as terror organizations BEIJING: US and Chinese trade representatives held talks on resolving key issues in the ongoing trade conflict between the two countries, the China’s Trade Ministry said on Tuesday. “The two sides discussed the resolution of each other’s core concerns, reached consensus on the resolution of relevant issues, and agreed to maintain communication on the remaining issues of the first phase of the agreement and consultation,” a statement on the ministry’s website said. Chinese Vice Premier Liu He, leading the negotiations on the Chinese side, and US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer, along with US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin exchanged views in a telephone call early Tuesday, Efe news reported. On the Chinese side, Commerce Minister Zhong Shan, People’s Bank of China Governor Yi Gang, and vice president of the National Development and Reform Commission (the country’s main economic planning body), Ning Jizhe, were also present during the meeting. China’s commerce ministry said earlier this month that they had reached an agreement with Washington to phase out the duties

U The two sides discussed the resolution of each other’s core concerns

that both sides had been imposing during the dispute, however US President Donald Trump lowered expectations days later. Last week, Chinese President Xi Jinping said during an economic forum in Beijing that his country wanted to work on an agreement based on “mutual respect and equality,” but that it was not China that started the conflict and it would retaliate if necessary. The latest escalation in the trade war, which has resulted in successive tariff hikes from both countries for nearly two years, happened on September 1 with a 10-15 per cent increase in tariffs from Washington on Chinese imports worth $112 billion. It remains to be seen whether on December 15 the same increase of up to 15 per cent will apply to all other US imports from China, the total value of which would reach $300 billion. —IANS

S President Donald Trump has said that US will designate Mexican drug cartels as foreign terrorist organizations. “I will be designating the cartels,” Donald Trump said on being asked about the issue during a radio interview on Tuesday. Trump said he has been “working on that for the last 90 days”, Efe news reported. “You know, designation is not that easy, you have to go through a process, and we are well into that process”, the US President said. When asked what measures he would take after the designation and if drone strikes were a possibility, he said, “I don’t want to say what I am going to do”. Deadly violence by Mexican drug cartels has gained fresh attention in the US recently after the killing of nine Mormon women and children who were dual Mexican and American citizens. After the massacre, Trump in a tweet offered to help Mexico “wage WAR on the drug cartels and wipe them off the face of the earth”. Trump in his interview claimed to have offered to collaborate with Mexican president Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador in the fight against the cartels, saying, “I’ve actually offered him to let us go in and

The designation of cartels as terrorist organizations could lead to new sanctions.

Mexico’s Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard responded to Trump’s statements, saying that the country “will never allow any actions that signifies a violation of its national sovereignty. We will act firmly” clean it out. He so far has rejected the offer, but at some point something has to be done.” Mexico’s Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard responded to Trump’s statements Tuesday, saying that the country “will never allow any actions that signifies a violation of its national sovereignty. We will act firmly”.

“I have already conveyed the (our) position to the EU as well as our resolve to tackle transnational organized crime. Mutual respect is the basis of cooperation,” he added on Twitter. The designation of cartels as terrorist organizations could lead to new sanctions, as well as the allocation of more resources to combat them

Growth down, but no recession yet: FM Sitharaman rejected opposition member’ contention that demonetization had triggered the slowdown, saying it had helped cull out black money and formalize the economy fiscals but listed out several measures taken by the government to prop up the economy. She said that she had taken 32 major steps to boost the economy and they had been bearing fruit.

oming under attack from the opposition parties in Rajya Sabha over slowdown and job losses, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on November 27 compared the macro-economic data of the NDA-I government with that of UPA-II to drive home the point that all was well with the economy. Replying to members on the short duration discussion in the Upper House, she said that India’s real GDP growth was at 6.4 per cent at the end of UPA-II (20092014) while it was 7.5 per cent, between 2014-2019, in the NDA government. “I have reason to do it. You must permit me and you may kindly hear,” the Finance Minister told opposition. Soon after this, most of the opposition members walked

tization and “hasty” GST implementation for the slowing GDP, Sitharaman said that growth may have come down but it is not recession yet. The Minister said that the lagged effect of twin balance sheet crisis faced by banks had caused the GDP slowdown in the last two

ivil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on November 27 said in Rajya Sabha that national carrier Air India will have to close down if it is not privatized. He, however, said that a favorable deal would be ensured for all the employees. “I will go to that extent and say that,” the Minister said replying to a question in the Upper House. Taking a small pause Puri said that the airline would be closed

down if not privatized. The government is readying the bid document for selling off its entire stake in the national carrier and has set March 31 as deadline for completing the disinvestment process. In earlier attempt, the Modi government had in May, 2018 invited the expression of interest (EoI) to sell 76 per cent of its stake but not a single private party showed interest in the first stage of bidding. The top aviation ministry officials and Air India Chief Ashwani Lohani are currently meeting the

tries were keen to replicate the same. On the revenue position, she said that revenue receipts had increased in the first six months of the current fiscal. Further, a total of Rs 3.26 lakh crore out of targeted Rs 6.63 lakh crore in the budget had been collected in the first 7 months of FY20. Starting the short duration discussion, senior Congress leader Anand Sharma raised concerns around government finances, saying the fiscal deficit could have reached alarming levels, factoring in all the refunds due from the government. The former Union Minister also said that investment had fallen to record low and people’s trust in the banking system had been going down. He took a swipe at the government, saying it was in a state of denial.

potential investors before launching the bid process. Hardeep Puri had last week said that the Group of Ministers (GoM) on Air India had earlier met and taken some decisions. Asked by a member in the Rajya Sabha if pilots had been leaving the

airline in the wake of privatization, the Minister replied in negative. Air India has stayed afloat on government support. The UPA-II government had cleared a financial package of over Rs 30,000 crore to ensure the public sector carrier survived.

NEW DELHI: The BJP on Thursday condemned Bhopal MP Pragya Singh Thakur for her statement on Nathuram Godse, the assassin of Mahatma Gandhi Pragya in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday and said that she will be removed from the consultative committee on defense. BJP’s working president J.P. Nadda said: “We have decided that Pragya Singh Thakur will be removed from the consultative committee of defense, and in this session, she will not be allowed to participate in the parliamentary party meetings.” —IANS

Opposition alliance could cross BJP tally in Jharkhand election IANS, NEW DELHI/RANCHI

T

he ruling BJP is expected to be the highest vote getter in Jharkhand, winning between 28 and 38 seats, but the opposition alliance of CongressJMM together with RJD could give the BJP a tough fight, says the IANS-CVoter Jharkhand Opinion Poll. According to the opinion poll, though the BJP is the most favored party in the state, it might not make the winning figure of 41 seats needed to form the government in the 81-member state Assembly. Ahead of the five-phased Jhark-

hand elections set to begin on November 30, the opinion poll says that opposition Jharkhand

Mukti Morcha (JMM) could come a close second to the BJP, winning between 18 and 28 seats.

Its alliance partner Congress could get between 4 and 10 seats. The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) is unlikely to make a major presence in the state and its seat projection is not listed separately in the opinion poll. For the record, these parties had fought the last Jharkhand Assembly elections separately. Taking a mid-range in seat projections, the opinion poll for the tracker month of November shows that the JMM (23 seats), Congress (7 seats) — RJD’s seat projection has not been given separately —could go head-to-head with the BJP midrange seat projection of 33 seats. The seat projection for the All Jharkhand Students Union

(AJSU), with which the BJP was in alliance in 2014 but the two are contesting separately this time, is 3 to 9 seats (mid-range 6 seats). In the event of a close contest, this parting of ways may prove costly for the BJP. The seats projection for the Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (JVM) is 3 to 9 seats, like the AJSU. The JVM is not in alliance with any party in these polls. “The Tracking Poll Fieldwork covers random probability samples taken during the last 7 days from the release date. The sample spread is across all Assembly segments in the poll bound state,” said Team CVoter.

PIO named source for Ukraine info House of Representatives Intelligence Committee named Kashyap Patel as a source providing information on Ukraine matters directly to Donald Trump ARUL LOUIS, NEW YORK

A

n Indian-American White House Official has been enmeshed in the controversy over President Donald Trump’s dealings with Ukraine that is the focus of the impeachment hearings against him. House of Representatives Intelligence Committee Chair Adam Schiff on Thursday named Kashyap Patel as a source providing information on Ukraine matters directly to Trump, bypassing the National Security Council (NSC) staffers in-charge of the country’s matters. Patel, who is the senior director of counter terrorism in the NSC, is a political appointee caught in the crossfire between Trump loyalists and those taking on the president. During the impeachment hearing testimony by Fiona Hill, the former NSC Senior Director dealing with Ukraine, Schiff said, “The indication is that Kash Patel provided some information directly to the president without your knowledge.” “That seems to be the indica-

Indians account for 93% of H4 visas in US: Jaishankar NEW DELHI: Indians today account for 93 per cent of the total number of visas under H4 visa category, which is meant work permit for the spouses, in the US, said External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar in Rajya Sabha. The member KJ Alphons has asked the Chair whether there has been a move by the US government to prevent spouses of H-1B visa holders from working, which affects something like half-a-million spouses. To this, Jaishankar said that the ability of spouses to work was introduced in 2015 and this category of visa is called H4 visa and interestingly Indians today account for 93 per cent of the total number of visas issued in this category. “There was some controversy whether this program would be continued but right now, the program is continued. There is a court order to the effect that it should be continued but the Trump Administration has indicated that it may review it at some point of time,” Jaishankar said. In the House, the Congress member Syed Nasir Hussain asked

and asked her who it was. Hill said that the person was referred to only as “Kash” and “I had to search my mind. The only Kash I knew at the National Security Agency was Kash Patel.” Schiff asked her if he worked on

Ukraine and reported to her, and she replied that Lt Col Alexander Vindman, who testified on earlier, was the director for Ukraine and she did not oversee Patel. In secret hearings last month Vindman had told the panel inves-

tigating Trump for impeachment that Patel had misrepresented his expertise on Ukraine to the president. Because of this he had been prevented from attending a briefing for Trump, he said. Patel had worked for the Intelligence Committee, when it was controlled by the Republicans and David Nunes was its chair. As an aide to Trump’s vociferous supporter Nunes, Patel raised questions about the credibility of the allegations against Trump of colluding with Russians, which led to the protracted inquiry by Special Counsel Robert Mueller, who ultimately did not find such collusion. Patel was the principal author of a memo issued by Nunes that accused the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Justice Department of bias against Trump and of abusing laws to get warrants to conduct surveillance of a Trump campaign adviser, Carter Page. The government could not find any grounds to prosecute Page. Patel had earlier worked as a counter-terrorism prosecutor for the Justice Department.

whether US government has disqualified seven Indian IT companies from applying for H-1B visas? The External Affair Minister said there is no such thing. With regard to the seven major Indian employers, there is no disqualification on any of them, he said. Jaishankar explained that the number of visas for which they have applied to has come down in the last few years. “Denial rates have also gone up. But, denial rates have not gone up only for the Indian companies; denial rates have gone up for all companies,” he explained. So, as far as these seven companies are concerned, even last year, they got 3,828 new visas, and 15,230 renewal of H-1B visas.

Trump approves bill supporting HK protesters Hong Kong’s government said the bill would send the wrong signal and would not help to ease the situation IANS, HONG KONG

U

S President Donald Trump has signed two bills that supports human rights and prodemocracy protesters in Hong Kong, drawing angry objections from Beijing’s Foreign Ministry. The Human Rights and Democracy Act mandates an annual review, to check if Hong Kong has enough autonomy to justify its special status with the US, BBC reported. The US move came almost simultaneously along with a key development in the estuary state on Thursday where police and firemen entered a university which had been under police siege for more than 10 days.

Pak mulling imposition of emergency? ISLAMABAD: The highest echelons in the Pakistan government are mulling the imposition of emergency to meet any untoward situation arisBajwa ing due to developments regarding the uncertainty over extension in service for Army Chief Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa, said sources. The News and Jang reported on November 26 that no conclusive decision has been arrived at by the high-ups since most of the senior officials are not in agreement with the proposal.

‘Elected people needed in Af peace settlement’ UNITED NATIONS: India has issued a note of caution for the United States peace efforts in Afghanistan with the Taliban saying that the elected representatives should be the main voice in deciding the nation’s future. Any solution should have “constitutional legitimacy and a political mandate” and “not leave ungoverned spaces for terrorists and their proxies to exploit,” Indian diplomat Vidhisha Maitra said on Wednesday. “In any country, it is the people of that country and the elected representatives of that country who should have the leading voice in deciding their future,” Maitra told the General Assembly during the debate on Afghanistan. `—IANS

“I signed these bills out of respect for President Xi, China, and the people of Hong Kong. They are being enacted in the hope that Leaders and Representatives of China and Hong Kong will be able to amicably settle their differences leading to long term peace and prosperity for all,” Trump said in a statement on Wednesday. On the other hand, Hong Kong’s government said the bill would send the wrong signal and would not help to ease the situation. China said it would take “firm counter measures” — accusing Washington of “absolutely sinister intentions”, foreign media reported. The Chinese state media said the bill was “unnecessary and groundless, and will damage exchanges

between the region and the US”. The US President is seeking a deal with China, in order to end a damaging trade war between the two countries. He had previously been noncommittal about whether he would sign the bill, saying he was “with” Hong Kong but that Mr Xi was also “an incredible guy”, BBC reported. However, the bill had widespread congressional support, which meant that even if he vetoed it, lawmakers could potentially have voted to overturn his decision. Trump also signed a second bill, which bans the export of crowdcontrol munitions to the police in Hong Kong — including tear gas, rubber bullets and stun guns. “(The bills) are being enacted in

Labour manifesto pledges to teach colonialism in school IANS, LONDON/NEW DELHI

n an apparent move to woo the sizeable British Indian community from veering towards the Conservatives, Labour party leader Jeremy Corbyn has unveiled a specific Race and Faith Manifesto that plans to teach students about the “historical injustice” and Britain’s role in slavery and colonialism. The manifesto unveiled on November 26 ahead of next month’s elections calls for a new body to oversee the legacy of colonialism

and a race equality unit at the Treasury. It also contains policies on how to combat anti-Semitism in Britain. The manifesto says the party will also force businesses to report on the pay gap faced by their black, Asian and ethnic minority employees. Corbyn said: “Our Race and Faith Manifesto presents our unshakeable commitment to challenge the inequalities and discrimination that has faced too many communities.” The manifesto says: “Understanding the breadth of Britain’s

hiv Sena President Uddhav B. Thackeray was sworn-in as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra at a colorful function held in Shivaji Park here on Thursday evening. Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari administered the oath of office and secrecy at 6.40 pm to Thackeray - who sported a striking saffron colored kurta-pyjama, the Sena’s color. In an unusual gesture of humility, soon after completing the formalities, Thackeray, the first from the politically prominent Thackeray clan to hold the post, stepped to the front of the stage and knelt down, touching his hands and head on the floor to express his gratitude to the people of Maharashtra for the honor bestowed on him. Thackeray is the third from the Sena to be Chief Minister after Manohar Joshi and Narayan Rane in the late 1990s. Besides, two legislators from each of Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA)’s constituents — the Shiv Sena, the Nationalist Congress Party, and the Congress, also took oath as ministers. They are: Shiv Sena’s Eknath Shinde and Subhash Desai, NCP’s Jayant Patil and Chhagan Bhujbal, and Congress’ Balasaheb Thorat

and Nitin Raut. Among the prominent dignitaries present on the occasion were more than 500 farmers and farm widows from all over Maharashtra, Thackeray’s cousin and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena President Raj Thackeray, Reliance Group industrialist Mukesh Ambani, his wife Nita Ambani and their family. At least three Chief Ministers from other states, six former Maharashtra CM like Sharad Pawar, Sushilkumar Shinde, Manohar Joshi, Prithviraj Chavan, Ashok Chavan and Devendra Fadnavis were present. Other prominent personalities from all the three parties included

Abhishek Manu Singhvi, Mallikarjun Kharge, Kapil Sibal, Rajiv Shukla, Praful Patel, Kishore Tiwari, Supriya Sule-Pawar, Sanjay Raut, Arvind Sawant, Rohit Pawar, and Ajit Pawar and his son Parth Pawar. Thackeray’s son Aditya Thackeray and wife Rashmi Thackeray, besides aunt Kundatai (mother of Raj Thackeray) who was seen shedding tears of joy at her nephew’s ascent as CM, were also present. Scores of leaders, legislators, MPs and well-wishers touched Thackeray’s feet as he gracefully accepted their wishes and felicitations. A group of Jain monks and sanyasins also turned up impromp-

NEW DELHI: The Congress nominee in the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) coalition government included Nitin Raut, a close aide of Rahul Gandhi, which indicated that the former party chief had a say in the selection of party representatives to be sworn in as Ministers in the Uddhav Bal Thackeray-led government, sources said. Raut was head of the AICC’s SC section and working president of the Maharashtra Congress. Rahul and his team were initially averse to the party joining hands with the Shiv Sena, but agreed to back the Sena-led government after the common minimum programme (CMP) was finalized and all contentious issues were resolved. Other Congress Minister, Balasahab Thorat, is Maratha. Raut belongs to the Scheduled Caste. The Congress had tried to strike a social balance, said a leader. Along with Thackeray, two Ministers from each major MVA con-

stituents have taken the oath of the office. As per the power-sharing agreement, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) will get the Deputy Chief Minister and Nitin Raut the Deputy Speaker’s posts. The Congress will get the Speaker’s post. The Congress is pushing former Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan for the Speaker’s post, but the NCP is reluctant on his name, according to top NCP sources. The NCP wanted a person who would take decisions as per need and not to dial the Congress central leadership, the sources said referring the former CM’s backing in New Delhi. Before appointed as the Maharashtra Chief Minister, Chavan was a Minister in the Manmohan Singh government and was handling PMO and personnel departments.

with an estimated over 100,000 people including activists of the three MVA parties and others coming from all over Maharashtra to witness the historical event.

Maha govt’s focus on ‘secular, all-inclusive’ common agenda IANS, MUMBAI

I

n a major deviation from its known pro-Hindutva stance of the past 30 years, the Shiv Senaled Maha Vikas Aghadi announced a “secular, all-inclusive” Common Minimum Programme as it prepared to form the new Maharashtra government in alliance with the Nationalist Congress Party and the Congress on Thursday. The preamble of the three parties’ Common Minimum Programme states: “The alliance partners commit to uphold the secular values enshrined in the Constitution. On contentious issues of national importance as well of state importance especially having repercussions/consequences on the secular fabric of the nation, the Shiv Sena, NCP and Congress will take a joint view after holding consultations and

arriving at a consensus.” The CMP focuses on hugely on the burning issues of the farmers, unemployment problems, minorities, downtrodden sections, urban roads and housing, girls and

women’s issues, besides problems plaguing the industry, health sector and other fields for the overall public benefit in the state. The CMP was announced at a joint press conference by Shiv Sena’s Eknath

Shinde, NCP’s Jayant Patil, NCP national spokesperson Nawab Malik and Congress’ Balasaheb Thorat. Spelling cheers for Mumbaikars, the MVA government said it will provide homes of 500 square feet free of cost to slumdwellers instead of 300 square feet in Mumbai as well as across Maharashtra, under the Slum Rehabilitation Programme, with best infrastructure and basic facilities. The CMP also promises wholesome meals for only Rs 10 for common citizens, which was part of the Sena’s original election manifesto. To ensure proper implementation of the CMP, two committees - one within the state cabinet and another among the three alliance partners will be formed for better coordination, they said. Among the CMP’s major highlights are: immediate loan waiver to

farmers, prompt assistance to farmers suffering due to unseasonal rains and floods, revising the crop insurance scheme to ensure immediate compensation to farmers who have suffered crop losses, ensuring remunerative prices for farm produce and sustainable water supply schemes for the drought-hit regions. To address unemployment, the MVA regime will take immediate steps to fill up all vacant posts in the government, enact a law to provide 80 per cent jobs to domiciled locals, and provide fellowships to educated unemployed youth. For women, girls from economically weaker sections will be given free education, working women’s hostels will be built in cities and district headquarters, and increased honorarium and better service conditions for anganwadi sevikas/asha workers will be provided.

This was India 12th consecutive home series victory as they also became the first team ever to complete four successive innings victories in the five-day format. India had won the first rubber by an innings and 130 runs. After India declared their first innings on 347/9 on Saturday, Bangladesh slumped to 14/3 by the seventh over and risked losing the match inside two days. SEPANG (MALAYSIA): Indias top woman racer Sneha Sharma came up with a stellar performance to finish overall 6th in Race Round 9 of the prestigious Formula 4 South East Asia Championship 2019, here at the Sepang International formula 1 Circuit, Malaysia. Sneha, one of the first women to break into the racing circles in the country, was the only Indian driver in the race, she was also the only woman competitor among all boys this round. Racing in a Formula 4 car and supported by Indigo Airlines & JK Tyre Motorsport, she was up against a formidable line up of drivers from seven different countries, mostly from Europe. The 29-year-old Indigo Airlines pilot by profession clocked a best time of 2:16:665 in qualifying to finish 6th in race 4. Ishant Sharma, who claimed 5/22 in the first innings, was the wreckerin-chief in the second as well, returning 4/56 with an impeccable display of seam bowling. Bangladesh were shot out for 106 in the first innings and trailed their hosts by 89 runs. They resumed the third day at 152/6, still trailing by 89 runs. Ebadat Hossain walked out to bat with Mushfiqur but it took Umesh little time to have him caught by Kohli at slips.

disha is going to host the men’s hockey World Cup again in 2023, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said on Wednesday. The Chief Minister said the matches will be played both in Bhubaneswar and Rourkela. hockey in the winter of 2023 both in Bhubaneswar and Rourkela,” said a statement from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO).

It may be mentioned here that three countries were in the race to host the World Cup — Malaysia, Belgium and India. After a series of bidding rounds, India won the bid to host the World Cup. Hockey India has selected Odisha as the venue and partnered Odisha government to host big event in 2023. The Panposh hostel in Rourkela is the nerve centre of hockey in the country and as a tribute to the contribution of Sundergarh to Indian hockey, the Chief Minister proposed to host this prestigious event in Rourkela.

Rahim was next to go as he tried to be aggressive and up the ante. Al-Amin Hossain was the last to go as he was caught behind by Wriddhiman Saha off Umesh. Earlier, Kohli slammed a magnificent 136 and added 99 runs with his deputy Ajinkya Rahane who fell for a fluent 51. On Day 1, Cheteshwar Pujara also struck a similar 55. The India captain cover-drove Ebadot Hossain to reach 99 and, with the crowd chanting his name, took two off spinner Taijul Islam to bring up his 27th test century, and 20th as captain. Kohli equalled former Australian great Ricky Ponting’s record of 41 international centuries as captain. With the century, the 31-year-old also surpassed Ponting’s tally of 19 Test tons as skipper.

A

total of about 250 students, mostly from India, have been arrested in a sting operation by US immigration officials who set up a fake university, according to media reports. About 90 students were arrested in recent months in addition to the 161 the officials said they had arrested in March after the crackdown on those enrolled at the fake institution called Farmington University, the Detroit Free Press reported on Wednesday. The institution was set up by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) section of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) originally to catch those who recruited students on false premises and students got caught up in the operation. Farmington University had no real faculty or facilities and after getting admission there, students were able to work elsewhere using its practical training program. The crackdown began in January when about 100 students were arrested in early morning raids, the American Telugu Association reported at that time. It said that warrants had been issued for 600 students. Around the same time, the DHS filed charges in a federal court in ARUL LOUIS, UNITED NATIONS

ndia has issued a note of caution for the United States peace efforts in Afghanistan with the Taliban saying that the elected representatives should be the main voice in deciding the nation’s future. Any solution should have “constitutional legitimacy and a political mandate” and “not leave ungoverned spaces for terrorists and their proxies to exploit,” Indian diplomat Vidhisha Maitra said on Wednesday. “In any country, it is the people of that country and the elected representatives of that country who should have the leading voice in deciding their future (and) this has always been one of India’s guiding principles in its engagement with Afghanistan,” Maitra, a first secretary in India’s UN Mission, told the General Assembly during the debate on Afghanistan. “While the international community must be united in supporting these efforts, we do not believe in advancing prescriptions,” she added. At the same time, she said that

Detroit against eight persons who allegedly acted as recruiters for scam. In court documents, the DHS admitted that it set up Farmington University with undercover agents as staff in Farmington Hills, Michigan, to target foreign students who were staying in the US without proper authorisation. Prosecutors called it a “pay-tostay” scam because the students paid the recruiters to get docu-

ments from the fake university to enable them to stay on in a student visa without attending classes. Earlier in 2013, ICE had set up the University of Northern New Jersey and arrested 21 people in 2016 and canceled the visas 1,076 students, most of them from India and China, involved with the university. The Free Press reported that the eight recruiters in the Farmington University case were convicted

after they admitted guilt in court and seven of them have been sentenced to terms ranging from a year to two years. The remaining person, Phanideep Karnati, 35, is to the sentenced in January, it said. Those sentenced were identified by the newspaper as Barath Kakireddy, 29, Suresh Kandala, 31, Santosh Sama, 28, Avinash Thakkallapally, 28, Aswanth Nune, 26, Naveen Prathipati, 26, and Prem Rampeesa.

Court documents showed that the recruiters were paid between $5,000 and $20,000 at meetings with Homeland Security Investigations agents involved in the university for recruiting the students. The Farmington students’ arrest led to a diplomatic dispute between India and the US. The External Affairs Ministry issued a demarche in the days after the arrest to the US embassy in New Delhi asserting that the students “have been duped into enrolling in the ‘university’ (and) should be treated differently from those recruiters who have duped them.” The State Department responded with a statement accusing the students of knowingly participating in a scam. “All participants in this scheme knew that the University of Farmington had no instructors or classes (neither online nor in-person) and were aware they were committing a crime in an attempt to fraudulently remain in the United States,” it said. In August federal appeals court in Philadelphia allowed 500 students caught in the University of North Jersey operation to file a class action case against the government accusing it of depriving them of due process when it revoked their visas after trapping them in a sting operation.

Elected representatives should lead Af peace settlement, says India India did welcome “the opportunities created by the various initiatives towards a formal peace process at the international, regional and domestic levels”. The US is trying to make a peace deal with the Taliban so its troops can be withdrawn from Afghanistan to keep President Donald Trump’s election promise. The negotiations led by US Special Representative Zalmay Khalilzad have been an on-again, off-again process. The Taliban has refused to talk to the elected government of Afghanistan, which has expressed concern it would be undercut by a US-Taliban deal. US Alternate UN Representative Cherith Norman-Chalet said that Washington sought a durable peace through a political settlement in which Kabul would play its rightful

role. The US was committed to Afghanistan’s security and to ensuring that terrorists don’t exploit its territory. Maitra listed the Taliban among the terrorist groups enjoying sanctuaries in Pakistan and operating abroad. “The sanctuary and safe havens enjoyed from beyond Afghanistan’s borders by groups such as the Taliban, the Haqqani Network, Da’esh, as well as Al Qaeda and its proscribed affiliates, including the Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-eMohammed, must be eliminated,” she said. Afghanistan’s Permanent Representative Adela Raz said, “We firmly believe in the principles of respecting sovereignty and state-tostate relations and holding these values central to the success of our peace efforts.”

Her government welcomed “regional and international peace efforts which align with an Afghanled and Afghan-owned peace process and it helps to facilitate the direct talks with the Taliban,” she added. She reaffirmed President Ashraf Ghani’s offer to talk directly with the Taliban. She made a passing mention of the ongoing danger to Afghanistan from the Taliban. “People despite the threats of violence and attacks, in some cases even having their fingers cutoff by the Ta l i b a n , they still came out to vote,” she said.

The US is trying to make a peace deal with the Taliban.

But there is one thing that he misses from the eighties and nineties eras of filmmaking. “They (directors of eighties and nineties) had certain shot breakdown which was unbreakable. They shot their film in a very intense way and it was almost dependent upon a lot of people but no one. Nobody could break the intensity of the scene.

‘Hotel Mumbai’: An extraordinary film

A

n Australian filmmaker has delivered the definitive manifesto on what must surely rank as one of India’s most tragic carnages in history and, come to think, that should be a sobering thought for Bollywood. In the 11 years that have passed since the Mumbai attacks, the Hindi film industry has approached the subject only once with Ram Gopal Varma’s 2013 effort, The Attacks Of 26/11. But then, Varma has always been a Bollywood non-conformist, and his film seemed too much like a documentary for impact. Anthony Maras’ Hotel Mumbai-

chooses to be a slow-burn suspense drama rather than a frenetic thriller. Setting aside the socio-politics of the tragedy and its aftermath, the film solely focuses on taking us right into the plush Taj Mahal Palace hotel in Mumbai’s Colaba area, through the fateful night that culminated the heinous 26/11 massacres in Mumbai. In structure and spirit, Hotel Mumbai could remind you of con-

“They dealt with far too many elements in one scene, if you see Rahul Rawail’s film or JP Dutta’s films, or Ramesh Sippy’s Sholay, you will see that there is acting, characterisation, costuming, action, galloping horses, people falling and yet the emotion of the scene was also (there). What I feel is (they had) David Lean touch in a movie. Sometimes I wish I could make a movie which had all of that,” said Imtiaz, known for making movies with intense love stories. He is currently working on his next feature film. “We are not talking about this film except for the fact that it is releasing in February,” he said about his new project. Amazon Prime is also bringing back some of its hit shows -“Inside Edge” being one of them, and its actress Richa Chadha has promised her fans that the new season has a much more gripping and power-packed storyline. Breathe 2 is another show the viewers are eagerly waiting for, not only because of its content but also because it will be actor Abhishek Bachchan’s foray into the digital space. Mirzapur 2, starring Pankaj Tripathi and Ali Fazal, is expected to arrive in 2020. Four More Shots Please 2 and Zoya Akhtar’s Made in Heaven 2 have also been announced. The trend of renewals can be seen on Ekta Kapoor’s ALTBalaji too. impartial eye, letting incidents on the screen do the talking rather than use loud background score or dramatic camerawork. The film wastes no time in getting into actual incidents. We see the handful of Lashkar-e-Taiba gunmen, barely out of their teens, arrive in Mumbai by a boat. Soon, they disperse to various locations, as instructed. Beginning with Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, they then spread mayhem across target areas including Leopold Cafe and the Oberoi-Trident hotel before getting down to the real operation the annihilation of Taj hotel and its super-VIP guest list. Hotel Mumbai tells an extraordinary story in a down-to-earth manner. It does justice to the facts it chooses to portray, and weaves in the fiction without disturbing the facts. — Vinayak Chakravorty

Obesity can cause brain damage: Study NEW YORK: While obesity is primarily associated with weight gain, a new study found that it triggers inflammation in the nervous system that could damage important regions of the brain. Developments in MRI, like diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), a technique that tracks the diffusion of water along the brain’s signal-carrying white matter tracts, have enabled researchers to study this damage directly. “Brain changes were found in obese adolescents related to regions responsible for control of appetite, emotions and cognitive functions,” said study co-author Pamela Bertolazzi

At three-month and one-year follow-ups after surgery, both the obese and non-obese groups achieved acceptable scores that pertained to patient-reported function in the upper extremity - close to those of the general population. The two groups were also similar in regards to range of motion and bone alignment. At three months, smokers demonstrated worse scores related to arm, shoulder, and hand function and a lower percentage of healed fractures, but these effects improved over the course of a year.

esearchers have found that the amount of time children are spending each day watching television or using a computer or mobile device is increasing at an alarming rate. The study, published in the journal JAMA Pediatrics, found that children’s daily screen time increased from 53 minutes at age 12 months to more than 150 minutes at 3 years old. According to the researchers, by age 8, children in US were more likely to log the highest amount of screen time if they had been in

home-based childcare or were born to first-time mothers. “Our results indicate that screen habits begin early, this finding suggests that interventions to reduce screen time could have a better chance of success if introduced early,” said study senior auhtor Edwina Yeung, NIH’s Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) in the US. For the findings, the research team analysed data from the Upstate KIDS Study, originally undertaken to follow the development of children conceived after infertility treatments and born in New York State from 2008 to 2010.

Mothers of nearly 4,000 children who took part in the study responded to questions on their kids’ media habits when they were 12, 18, 24, 30, and 36 months of age. They also responded to similar questions when the children were seven and eight years old. The study compiled additional demographic information on the mothers and children from birth records and other surveys. In the current study, researchers found that 87 per cent of the children had screen time exceeding these recommendations. The researchers believe this decrease relates to time consumed by school-related activities.

R LONDON: It is possible to use our smartphones without any other wearables to accurately extract vital parameters, such as heart beat rate and stress level, claims a new study. The accelerometers inside a smartphone can be used to acquire a signal associated with mechanical cardiac activity, generated by the heart’s vibrations at every beat, which can be felt by simply placing the telephone on particular parts of the body, said the study published in the journal Sensors. In the study, the research team led by Professor Enrico Caiani from Politecnico di Milano in Italy focused on positioning of the smartphone on the abdomen, at the belly button, in a prone position, before getting out of bed in the morning. By suitably processing this signal, measurements can be acquired of the heart beat rate and status of activation of the sympathetic-vagal balance, associated with the stress level, said the study. It is possible to check the capacity of the indicators measured by the smartphone to capture the increase in stress, on the one hand, and, on the other hand, to determine the best correspondence of the results with the same observations made using an electrocardiogram taken at the same time. —IANS

esearchers have found that consumers may make better shopping decisions using their PCs rather than smart phones or other mobile devices. This study differentiates between screen size and information reduction, which are often mixed up. “The issue is not actually screen size, it is actually the fact that sites adjusted for mobile viewing reduce the information offered on the results page and require more digging around in the site for information,” said study researcher Lior Fink, from the Ben-Gurion University in Israel. “Sites adjusted for PC viewing

give more information right up front,” Fink said. “While mobile friendly presentation improves visibility, it reduces the amount of information

and causes consumers to make decisions that are less consistent with their preferences,” Fink said. From a pure decision-making perspective, the study shows it is

better to simply present the same information irrespective of the device used. Consumers will find the information more difficult to view on mobile devices, but their decisions will be more accurate. For the study, researchers conducted two experiments focused on choosing a fictitious hotel room among 11 room options. Participants viewed the information either on a PC or on a mobile device. While all the information was available in both displays, it was more readily available on the PC display. The assignments to a specific device and to a specific display were independent of each other.

$1 Billion

Fraud Scheme

High-Flying Chicago Tech Entrepreneurs Rishi Shah And Shradha Agarwal Charged In $1 Billion Fraud Scheme By Hi India Staff

C

hicago: Allegations of an approximately onebillion-dollar fraud scheme by US federal prosecutors have dramatically upended what seemed like storied tech careers of two Chicago-based Indian Americans Rishi Shah, 33, and

value of Outcome Health,” said Assistant U.S. Attorney Brian Hayes, Chief of the Criminal Division for the Northern District of Illinois. “Our office will continue to investigate and hold accountable those who perpetrate fraud schemes.” “These charges demonstrate that the FBI and its partners will hold businesses accountable for their

“Shah, Purdy and Agarwal then allegedly used the inflated revenue figures in Outcome’s 2015 and 2016 audited financial statements to raise $110 million in debt financing in April 2016, $375 million in debt financing in December 2016 and $487.5 million in equity financing in early 2017. The $110 million debt financing allegedly resulted in a $30.2 million dividend to Shah and a $7.5 million dividend to Agarwal; the $487.5 million equity financing allegedly resulted in a $225 million dividend to Shah and Agarwal,” it said. Shradha Agarwal,34. Shah and Agarwal, former chief executive officer and president respectively of the once high-flying health-tech company Outcome Health, face a 26-count indictment filed in the Northern District of Illinois on November 25. While attorneys for the two have denied all allegations, the scope of the indictment is significant as it says they were “charged for their alleged roles in a fraud scheme that targeted the company’s clients, lenders and investors, and involved approximately $1 billion in fraudulently obtained funds.” Two others, Brad Purdy, 30, of San Francisco, California, the chief operating officer and chief financial officer; and Ashik Desai, 26, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the executive vice president of business operations and, more recently, the chief growth officer of Outcome, have also been charged in the superseding indictment. Along with them also charged are Kathryn Choi, 29, of New York, New York, a senior analyst; and Oliver Han, 29, of Chicago, an analyst. “An initial appearance and arraignment for Shah, Agarwal and Purdy in federal court in Chicago have not yet been scheduled. An initial appearance and arraignment for Desai are set for Dec. 3, 2019, at 10:00 a.m., before U.S. District Judge Thomas M. Durkin,” an official statement by the Department of Justice said. “Outcome’s former executives and employees allegedly deceived lenders, investors, and their own auditors by falsely representing revenue for additional profit,” said Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General John P. Cronan of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division. “The charges announced today demonstrate that lies and deception cannot serve as the basis for any company, including start-up companies, to falsely grow revenue for additional capital and private gain.” “The deception alleged to have been committed by the defendants tricked clients into paying for advertising it failed to deliver and served to falsely inflate the

misconduct,” said Deputy Special Agent in Charge Larry L. Lapp of the FBI’s Chicago Field Office. “The defendants were charged with allegedly overinflating the company’s revenue figures in order to fraudulently obtain loans from banks,” said Inspector General Jay N. Lerner of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation’s Office of Inspector General (FDIC-OIG). “This scheme was orchestrated by former leaders of the organization who personally benefitted from hundreds of millions of dollars. We are committed to working with our law enforcement partners to investigate individuals involved in the crime and to preserve the integrity of the banking system.” Founded in 2006 as ContextMedia prior to 2017, Outcome Health’s Shah and Agarwal quickly became a high-profile success emerging from Chicago’s vibrant tech startup world. Its business was to stream pharmaceutical ads on televisions and computer tablets in various medical offices. “As alleged in the superseding indictment and information, from 2011 to 2017, the former executives and employees of Outcome, a digital provider of medical information and advertising in doctors’ offices, sold tens of millions of dollars of advertising inventory that did not exist. This allegedly resulted in inflated financial statements that the former executives used to raise nearly $1 billion in debt and equity financing in 2016 and 2017,” the DoJ said. This inflated inventory claim helped Outcome raise $487.5 million of equity financing and borrow $485 million. Among the investors were the marquee Chicago name Pritzker Group, Google parent Alphabet Inc. and Goldman Sachs Group Inc. “Shah, Agarwal and Purdy are each charged with various counts of mail fraud, wire fraud and bank fraud. Purdy is also charged with one count of false statements to a financial institution, and Shah is also charged with two counts of transactions in criminal proceeds. Desai

is charged with one count of wire fraud. Choi and Han are each charged with one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud,” the DoJ said. Shah and Agarwal were students at Northwestern University when they founded it in 2006. As the company’s valuation grew to $5.5 billion in 2017 following major investments, Shah and Agarwal became the toast of the Chicago tech world. Shah made it to the Forbes 400 list in 2017. “According to the allegations, the former executives and employees perpetrated a fraudulent scheme by selling clients—most of whom were pharmaceutical companies—advertising inventory the company did not have and then under-delivering on its advertising campaigns. Despite these under-deliveries, the company allegedly still invoiced its clients as if it had delivered in full. To conceal the under-deliveries, the former executives and employees allegedly falsified affidavits and proofs of performance to make it appear the company was delivering advertising content to the number of screens in its clients’ contracts, and also inflated patient engagement metrics regarding how frequently patients engaged with Outcome’s tablets. Furthermore, Desai allegedly altered a number of studies presented to clients to make it appear that the campaigns were more effective than they actually were,” the DoJ said. The charging documents also allege that the under-delivery resulted in a material overstatement of Outcome’s revenue for the years 2015 and 2016. The company’s outside auditor signed off on the 2015 and 2016 revenue numbers because Purdy, Desai, Choi and Han allegedly fabricated data to conceal the underdeliveries from the auditor, the DoJ said. The attorneys for Shah and Agarwal both independently their clients’ innocence. William Burck, a lawyer for Shah, was quoted as saying by Reuters that his client was being “scapegoated” for the wrongdoing of others who cut deals with prosecutors. “Mr. Shah will plead not guilty to these charges because he is, in fact, not guilty,” Burck said in a statement. Also according to Reuters, Christina Egan, a lawyer for Agarwal, said in response to the SEC lawsuit that her client denied the agency’s allegations and would defend herself in court. “Shradha never committed fraud and never participated in any conspiracy,” Egan said.

BY A STAFF WRITER ST. LOUIS, M,O- .Bal Vihar of St. Louis has been a promoter of peace and harmony for over 26 years. Bal Vihar youth actively participate in multi-cultural and multi-ethnic activity to understand other culture and religions while promoting theirs. Recently one of the youth groups participated in an inter-faith Pen-Pal project by exchanging videos and messages with a Jewish Community High School on the west coast. As is the case for many years, Bal Vihar students did a Diya project ahead of Diwali that raised funds for charitable institutes. Every year this has become a ritual that inculcates the habit of giving and being generous towards those who are less fortunate than us. Diwali is always an exciting time for Bal Vihar students and parents alike. It is one of the most anticipated and excited events for us. With an increase in number of students registered this year, it was no easy feat to accomplish. The volunteers spent countless hours to get ready for the event. With 700+ expected attendees, it meant having a plan that is orchestrated and executed to perfection. Bal Vihar celebrated its Diwali on November 3rd at its new facility – Hindu Temple Community Center. Students were dressed in traditional attire and proceed to the temple to perform the puja. They all proudly carried the Diyas made by them. While the students were performing puja, volunteers were managing the food and firecrackers distribution to the parents. Through great communication and collaboration, the volunteer unit performed like a well-oiled machine. After the puja, the students united with their parents and eagerly took off the load of

fireworks from them. They rushed outside to one of the most exciting activity for the day. The volunteers had cordoned part of parking area to provide a safe place for children to light fireworks. One had to be there to experience and smile and thrill that was present in the atmosphere. Volunteers had also put up some display fireworks for all to see and enjoy. After they finished their fireworks, families left to enjoy the boxed dinner in the comfort of their home. Soon after the fireworks were over, designated volunteers gathered their brooms and pans to start cleaning up the place. It was quite a task to clean up an area that was no less than 3000 square feet. Within an hour, the parking lot was cleaned up. Splendid teamwork and leadership was at display at

H

uawei CEO Ren Zhengfei has reiterated its warning to the US government that once the company’s Harmony operating system (OS) becomes operational, it may affect companies like Google as there will be no turning back from there. Huawei recently confirmed that the US sanctions were hurting it badly, especially the absence of Google’s core Android software, Play Store and popular apps like Search and Maps on its devices. In an interview given to CNN, Zhengfei said Washington will even-

tually help competitors gain if it continues to place restrictions on who US companies can trade with. If Huawei can’t work with US suppliers, “we will have to resort to alternatives. If those alternatives become mature, I think it’ll become less likely to switch back to previous versions,” the Huawei CEO was quoted as saying. If Huawei is forced to “resort to alternatives” to Google, it will only harm US companies. “[It] is a critical moment for all of us, I hope the US government can consider what’s best for American companies,” Zhengfei added. He said becoming a top player in

Soon: Self-destruct feature for messages in WhatsApp SAN FRANCISCO: Facebook-owned WhatsApp is working on a feature that will delete messages automatically after a stipulated time as set by users, according to WABetaInfo, a fan site that tests new WhatsApp features early. Renamed “Delete Messages” from earlier “Disappearing Messages”, the feature is being tested in beta mode. “In the WhatsApp beta for Android 2.19.282 update, we presented a new feature called ‘Disappearing Messages’ that will automatically delete messages after a certain time. The feature is still under development, and WhatsApp is

starting to work again on it in the 2.19.348 update, where they renamed ‘Disappearing Messages’ to ‘Delete Messages’,” WABetaInfo reported. Once available, the “Delete Message” feature will come with a toggle on/off button and users can choose a stipulated time -- 1 hour, 1 day, 1 week, 1 month or 1 year - for the messages to automatically disappear. Users who have enrolled themselves for Google Play beta programme can download the latest version. They can also manually update the app by downloading it from the APK available on APK Mirror platform. —IANS

the world of Android would not be a problem, adding “it will just take more time”. Earlier, the Chinese telecom giant said that the US government’s order to bar US telecom companies from using federal funds to buy products from Huawei is “unlawful”. Its response came after the US Federal Communications Commission listed Huawei and its industry peer ZTE as so-called “threats to national security” and thus barred companies from using money from the its Universal Service Fund (USF), which is $8.5 billion every year, to purchase technology from the two Chinese companies.

The US government made the decision “based on selective information, innuendo, and mistaken assumptions,” and it provided “no evidence that Huawei poses a security risk,” according to a statement

issued by Huawei. “These unwarranted actions will have profound negative effects on connectivity for Americans in rural and underserved areas across the United States,” said Huawei.
