Trump impeachment: Committee sends charges to full House for vote
A
f iercely divided House Judiciary Committee pushed President Trump to the brink of impeachment on Friday, voting along party lines to approve charges that he abused the power of his office and obstructed Congress. Jerrold Nadler, Hank Johnson, Jazz Jennings sitting at a table: Representative Jerrold Nadler, the chairman of the Judiciary Committee, arriving as the committee prepared to vote on the articles of impeachment against
Mr. Trump has remained defiant, insisting he had done “NOTHING wrong” and lambasting Democrats Friday morning as “the Party of lies and deception!” Firing off a series of tweets hours before the vote, Mr. Trump praised Republicans for their defense of him and declared “Republicans are the Party of the American Dream!” President Trump Friday on Capitol Hill. After a fractious two-day debate steeped in the Constitution and shaped by the realities of a hyperpartisan era in American politics, the Democraticcontrolled committee recommended that the House ratify two articles of impeachment against the 45th president. In back-to-back morning votes, they adopted each charge against Mr. Trump by a margin of 23 to 17 over howls of Republican protest. The par tis an result and t he contentious debate that preceded it were harbingers of a historic proceeding and vote on the House floor, expected next week, to impeach Mr. Trump, whose nearly three-year tenure has exacerbated the nation’s political

Mr. Trump, who insists he did nothing wrong, is now only the fourth American president in history to face impeachment by the House of Representatives for “high crimes and misdemeanors” and possible conviction and removal from office by the Senate. The charges ratified on Friday arise from a House Intelligence Committee investigation that concluded this fall that the president has manipulated his administration to pressure Ukraine to investigate former Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr., his political rival, and a theory that Democrats conspired with Ukraine to interfere in the 2016 election. He did so, Democrats allege, using as leverage nearly $400 million in security assistance for Ukraine’s fight against Russia and a coveted White House meeting for its president. Mr. Trump then sought to conceal the scheme from Congress, the committee charged, ordering unprecedented, across-the-board stonewalling of its investigation unlike any “in the history of the Republic.” It amounted to an effort by the president to undermine
U.S. CONGRESS NEGOTIATORS, WHITE HOUSE SET TENTATIVE DEAL ON FISCAL 2020 FUNDING
S
enior negotiators in the U.S. Congress on Thursday reached a tentative deal with the White House on a series of bills to fund federal agencies through Sept. 30, 2020, which would avert partial government shutdowns next week. A person familiar with the negotiations said that votes by the full House of Representatives on a series of bills costing around $1.3 trillion could come as soon as Tuesday as Congress races to complete this work before a Dec. 20 deadline when existing money expires. While some technical issues still have to be resolved, the source said that major disagreements between
Democrats and Republicans have been worked out. That includes, according to the source, how to address Republican President Donald Trump’s demand for billions of dollars to fund further construction of a wall along the U.S.Mexico border. The source did not provide details on whether such funding would be included in this package. If the Democratic-controlled House approves the legislation next week, the Republican-led Senate would also have to sign off before it can be sent to Trump for his signing into law. Fe d e r a l age nc i e s have b e e n operating on temporary funding since
the separation of powers and limit his accountability, they said. The vote took place in the Ways and Means Committee room the morning after a contentious 14-hour session in the Judiciary Committee that stretched past 11 p.m. on Thursday as Democrats turned back a number of Republican efforts to gut or weaken the charges and members of both parties feuded over impeaching the president. Republicans argued not so much that Mr. Trump’s conduct was not impeachable, but that his actions were justified and explained by more innocent intentions. Representative Jerrold Nadler, Democrat of New York and the chairman of the Judiciary Committee, abruptly paused the session late Thursday night before bringing the articles to a final vote, saying he wanted members to take the time to “search their consciences” before the historic roll-call. After Republicans had dragged out the debate for hours, Democrats said they did not want such a consequential vote to occur in the dark of night, when the American public was unlikely to be watching. Oct. 1, the beginning of the current fiscal year, because Congress and the White House had been unable to agree on full-year appropriations for agencies such as the Department of Homeland Security, which administers many of the Trump administration’s controversial immigration policies.
A year ago, a record-long 35-day government shutdown of many federal operations occurred when Congress failed to approve spending bills and stopgap funding expired.
Andrew Johnson in 1868 and Bill Clinton in 1998 were both impeached on largely partisan votes, but were later acquitted by the Senate. Richard M. Nixon resigned in 1974 after the Judiciary Committee had approved charges against him, and just before the House could take a final vote to impeach him. Talk of impeaching Mr. Trump began among some liberals as early as his Inauguration Day in 2017, and intensified this year when Democrats reclaimed control of the House amid a swirl of speculation about whether a special counsel investigation would conclude that Mr. Trump’s campaign had conspired with Russia to interfere in the 2016 election. But in the end, the impeachment of Mr. Trump has unfolded rapidly and on grounds that emerged only a few months ago. The Judiciary Committee votes came almost exactly four months after an anonymous C.I.A. whistleblower submitted a complaint alleging a systematic campaign by the president to solicit Ukraine’s help in the 2020 election. The House opened its inquiry in late September. On Friday, the Judiciary Committee endorsed the charge that Mr. Trump abused the powers of his office by pressuring Ukraine to announce investigations of his political rivals, using official acts as leverage as he sought advantage for his 2020 reelection campaign. Though Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other Democratic leaders have explicitly connected the Ukraine matter to Mr. Trump’s embrace of Russian election assistance during the 2016 campaign, accusing the president of a broad and dangerous pattern of conduct, they elected not to include additional charges outside of it.
Some of the same thorny issues, including billing U.S. taxpayers for a wall that Trump vowed in 2016 would be paid for by Mexico, were at the heart of the just-completed negotiations. Democrats and some Republicans complain that a wall is an inefficient solution to stemming the flow of i m m i g r ant s an d i l l e g a l d r u g s from Central America and other foreign countries coming over the southwestern border with Mexico. There are estimates that, if fully built, it could cost over $24 billion over several years. Over the past several months, Trump has used executive powers to rechannel money from other programs to build some portions of a wall since Congress has balked at its funding - a move that has angered many members of Congress. There also were tough battles over funding for the detention of immigrants as they await court hearings on whether they will be deported. Details also were

he Jamia Millia Islamia University turned into a battlefield on Friday after police and students, who wanted to march to Parliament House to protest the Citizenship Amendment Act, clashed with each other prompting AAP MLA Amanatullah Khan to reach the spot to take stock of the situation. Fifty students were detained following a clash between police and students after the protestors were stopped at the varsity gate and prevented from carrying out their march. The students, who were batoncharged by police personnel, alleged that the police also used tear gas to quell their march. The students also resorted to stone-pelting. However, the protestors alleged that police resorted to stone-pelting first and students threw stones in response to the attack.

Citizenship Act amended to distract people from economic slowdown: Kamal Nath
I
n a clear indication that he will not implement the citizenship law in Madhya Pradesh, Chief Minister Kamal Nath on Friday alleged the Union government was practising divisive politics and using the “politics of distractions” to divert attention from the country’s economic slowdown. Addressing newspersons at the Indian Women’s Press Club, Nath said he was most worried about the future of the Indian youth, given the present economic state of the country. “Anything that is divisive, we will not do it. The stand of the Congress in any law that divides society will be the stand of the MP government,” he said when asked if like West Bengal and Kerala, the MP government too would reject CAB. He also said the correct protocol before introduction of CAB would have been to have a meeting of chief
ministers with the government so that their objections and issues could be addressed.“The worst part is the politics of distraction, changing the orbit of people’s imagination. Every time there is an economic slowdown, a bill is introduced, a decision is taken to distract people,” the Madhya Pradesh chief minister said. The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill was passed by Rajya Sabha on Wednesday, two days after Lok Sabha passed it. President Ram Nath Kovind gave his assent to the bill on Thursday, turning it into an Act. According to the Act, Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians who had come to India till Dec 31, 2014, from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan because of religious persecution will not be treated as illegal immigrants and be given Indian citizenship.
the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) rushed to the spot to take stock of the situation. As a precautionary measure, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) closed the entry and exit points at Patel Chowk and Janpath metro stations following Delhi police’s advisory.
“As advised by Delhi Police, entry & exit at Patel Chowk and Janpath have been closed. Trains will not be halting at these stations,” DMRC said on twitter. The stations were opened an hour later.

india feature SEVERAL PLEAS FILED IN SC CHALLENGING CITIZENSHIP (AMENDMENT) ACT 2019
S
everal petitions, including those by Congress MP Jairam Ramesh and Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra, were filed in the Supreme Court on Friday challenging the constitutional validity of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act 2019. According to the amended Act, members of Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi and Christian communities who have come from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan till December 31, 2014 and face religious persecution there will not be treated as illegal immigrants but given Indian citizenship. President Ram Nath Kovind had given assent to the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019 on Thursday night, turning it into an Act. Several other petitioners including All Assam Students Union (AASU), Peace Party, NGOs ‘Rihai Manch’ and Citizens Against Hate, advocate M L Sharma, law students have also approached the apex court challenging the Act. Moitra’s plea was mentioned for urgent listing before a bench headed by Chief Justice S A Bobde and her counsel urged that the petition be heard during the day or on December 16. “Today? Nothing today. You go to the mentioning officer,” the bench, also comprising justices B R Gavai and Surya Kant, told Moitra’s counsel. While Ramesh has said that the Act is a “brazen attack” on core fundamental rights envisaged under the Constitution and treats “equals as unequal”, Moitra has said that “patent unconstitutionality” of the law “destroys the plural, multi-religious and egalitarian basis of India’s secular fabric, and replaces it with a constitutionally unsustainable
religion centric substance.” In his petition, Ramesh said that substantial questions of law, including whether religion can be a factor to either acquire or deny citizenship in India, arises for consideration of the court as it is a “patently unconstitutional” amendment to the Citizenship Act, 1955. “The impugned Act creates two classifications, viz, classification on basis of religion and the classification on the basis of geography and both the classifications are completely unreasonable and share no rational nexus to the object of the impugned Act i.e., to provide shelter, safety and citizenship to communities who in their native country are facing persecution on grounds of religion,” the plea said. Moitra has said in her plea that the Act is a “divisive, exclusionary and discriminatory piece of legislation that is bound to rend the secular fabric irreparably, and allow illegal migrants of particular religions to acquire citizenship immediately upon its passage.” She has also sought top court’s direction to suspend the operation of the Act and all actions under it pending disposal of her plea. In their plea, NGOs ‘Rihai Manch’ and Citizens Against Hate, have said that the Act is “discriminatory and manifestly arbitrary” and violates the fundamental rights, including that of equality before law, and basic structure of the Constitution. “The amendment is manifestly arbitrary inasmuch it is capricious, irrational, not transparent, biased with favouritsm or nepotism, without adequate determining principle, and contrary to
AVIATION SCAM: SPECIAL COURT GRANTS BAIL TO LOBBYIST DEEPAK TALWAR’S CLOSE AIDE
S
pecial court on Friday granted bail to Yasmin Kapoor, a close aide of co-accused and corporate lobbyist Deepak Talwar, in a money laundering case in connection with an aviation scam, which allegedly
led to losses for Air India. “The concern of the Investigating Agency regarding possible influence over the named witness has been taken care of as the statement of said witness has already been recorded while
the public interest,” the plea, filed through advocate Fauzia Shakil, said. In his petition, Ramesh has sought a declaration that the Act is “ultra vires” the Assam Accord of 1985, the Constitution and violates the international law and obligation approved and agreed by India under international covenants. The plea by Ramesh, which is settled by senior advocates Kapil Sibal and Devadatt Kamat, has sought quashing of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 as “unconstitutional, null and void and ultra vires” Articles 14 (equality before law) and 21 (protection of life and personal liberty) of the Constitution. “The impugned Act suffers from manifest arbitrariness, as it arbitrarily groups only 3 countries along with only 6 religions and expressly excludes specific religions and regions from availing the benefits of the Citizenship Amendments,” it said. Similarly, one of the pleas said the Act “purportedly seeks to provide benefits to victims of persecution. However, the impugned Act goes on to create a division between the persecuted, on the basis of faith and nationality of origin.” On Thursday, another plea challenging the 2019 Citizenship (Amendment) Bill was filed by Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) which said that it violates fundamental right to equality and intends to grant citizenship to a section of illegal immigrants by making an exclusion on the basis of religion. IUML has said in its plea that the bill was against the basic structure of Constitution and intended to explicitly discriminate against Muslims as it extends benefits only to Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians.
the accused was in judicial custody. The applicant apparently is not the main accused and was on anticipatory bail for a considerable time before she was taken in custody. The other ground that was considered against the applicant while canceling her bail was her attempts to influence the authorities in favour of Deepak Talwar in judicial custody. The applicant is willing to give an undertaking that she will not in any manner attempt to influence anyone and as such this part of adverse inference against her can be taken care of,” the court order reads. “In view of the facts as they are, the
application of accused Yasmin Kapoor seeking grant of regular bail is allowed. She is admitted to bail on furnishing of personal bond in the sum of ₹2 lakhs with one surety in the like amount… The applicant shall not make any efforts to contact accused Deepak Talwar while he remains in judicial custody directly or indirectly. The applicant shall not contact the absconding accused persons or provide any assistance to then in evading the process of court/ investigation. The applicant shall not contact any of the witnesses examined, being examined or likely to be examined by the ED,” it further added.

U
S officials have announced a “brief pause” in talks with the Taliban after the armed group launched a suicide attack on a US base in Afghanistan, killing two civilians. Special Envoy for Afghanistan Zalmay Khalilzad on Friday expressed “outrage about attack in Bagram” and said the talks in the Qatari capital Doha would resume after the Taliban “consult their leadership on this essential topic”. “Taliban must show they are willing & [and] able to respond to Afghan desire for peace,” Khalilzad said in a tweet. Wednesday’s early morning assault, for which the Taliban have claimed responsibility, began when a suicide bomber detonated his explosive-packed vehicle outside a hospital building near Bagram military base in Parwan province, north of the capital Kabul, according to local officials. Khalilzad had renewed talks with the Taliban earlier this month on steps that could lead to a ceasefire and settlement of the 18-year-long war in Afghanistan, allowing a gradual withdrawal of US troops from the country. Taliban spokesman Suhail Shaheen said Friday’s meeting was “very good and friendly”. “Both sides decided to resume the talks after a few days of break for consultation,” he said. The assault on Bagram airbase came despite the resumption of talks between

President Barack Obama at Conservative UN Climate Change Summit Party Wins Landslide Victory in U.K. Elections
I
n the United Kingdom, Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his Conservative Party won a landslide victory during Thursday’s decisive national election, dealing a devastating blow to Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour Party. Corbyn has said he will step down as head of the party after a “period of reflection.” It was the Labour Party’s worst electoral defeat in 84 years. The Conservatives are projected to win 364 seats in the British House of Commons versus only 203 for the Labour Party. This would give the Conservatives the largest majority since 1987, when Margaret Thatcher was in power. This is Labour Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell. The Conservative Party’s sweeping victory all but guarantees Brexit — Britain’s departure from the European Union — early next year. The party won resoundingly despite Prime Minister Boris Johnson being accused of Islamophobia, xenophobia and sexual harassment. We’ll have more on the British elections after headlines with British journalist George Monbiot and Cambridge University lecturer Priya Gopal.
K UA L A LUM P U R , Ma l ay s i a (AP) - Former U.S. President Barack Obama said Friday the Paris Agreement on climate change may fall short of expectations but is still the way forward to achieve progress and encourage businesses to invest in clean energy. Nearly 200 nations pledged to cut greenhouse emissions and help poor countries cope with the worst effects of an already warming planet under the accord signed in 2016 that was a cornerstone of Obama’s environmental legacy. But his successor, Donald Trump, abandoned that legacy when his administration notified the U.N. last month that the U.S. would pull out of the accord. Trump has said the agreement could impede growth and impinge on U.S. sovereignty. Speaking to young Asian leaders at a Kuala Lumpur conference hosted by his foundation, Obama said he knew the standards set by each country were insufficient but that the accord was practical and meant for the long haul. “I took satisfaction knowing that just by setting up the mechanism, we had created the ability to over time, turn up the standards, turn up the demands. Send a signal to businesses so that they started investing in more clean energy because they saw change coming,” he said in response to questions on the climate change crisis. O b am a d i d n’t m e nt i on U. S . withdrawal from the accord. He said there is no “silver bullet” to solve climate
change but he remains optimistic that global warming can be slowed down. “It’s too late for us not to have some impacts. And so there’s gonna have to be some adaptation that’s going to take place. The oceans will be rising and that is going to displace people. And so we’re going to anticipate and care for some of the consequences of that, including large-scale migration and disruptions that are going to be very costly. But there is a big difference between the ocean rising three feet and rising six feet,” he said. He urged young people not to despair but to use their voices to raise awareness on the issue. “We take two steps forward. We take one step back ... but the trajectory has been positive. And the best we can then do is just do our work and try to advance it as best we can. Understanding that we will not finish the job,” he said. “Most of the time, the way the world’s gotten to where we are now is small incremental victories, not big sweeping victories all at once.”

diaspora “This research gives a number of highly implementable recommendations to universities and their students which Sannam S4 will continue to champion.”
UK-EDUCATED INDIAN GRADUATES FACE BARRIERS WITH INDIAN EMPLOYERS
U
K-educated Indian graduates who return home to find a job are facing “ambivalence” from Indian employers, some of whom, according to a new report, did not recognise UK universities. The findings were presented in Sannam S4‘s report ‘Studying abroad in 2019: An Employability Premium for Indian Graduates?’, an update to a 2014 survey that featured more than 600 graduates who had studied in 25 countries and some 75 employers in India It revealed that employers lacked awareness of UK universities and in some sectors, 63% were “not at all likely” to employ international degree holders. While the report said the UK’s new post-study work rights represents a “great opportunity” to recruit Indian students, universities need to address issues with graduate employability. “With the prospect of increased levels of engagement with India,
it is more important than ever for UK universities to ensure they are supporting their graduates as effectively as possible,” said Zoe Marlow, Sannam S4’s head of client relations. “This research gives a number of highly implementable recommendations to universities and their students which Sannam S4 will continue to champion.” Sannam S4 presented its analysis on the employability of internationallye d u c a t e d I n d i a n g r a d u at e s at roundtables in Leeds, Edinburgh and London earlier this month. All of the surveyed graduates had completed their study overseas between 2013–18, and 51% had studied in the UK. The majority of employers who responded were in human resources. Delhi-NCR and Bangalore were the most represented locations, and 58% of respondents worked in very small (fewer than 100 employees) companies or very large (more than 5,000) companies. When asked “which of the following
reasons might be behind not getting the advantage of your degree”, 27% of the UK educated graduates cited “lack of employer awareness and/or recognition of the university.” During the London roundtable, Marlow argued that the reason for this specific issue might be down to the “size of the Indian landscape”. “If you think about it, there are 900 universities, 40,000 colleges: it is probably difficult for an Indian employer even to map where an Indian institution fits in, and to visualise what kind of student or employee they might be getting from somewhere that’s in a different part of India,” Marlow explained. “I think this really highlights the issue of trying to get someone to understand whether a student is at a research-led or teaching-led institution, what kind of person they are, what practical skills and knowledge they are going to bring to the job and how that is different or would be more useful to
their business as it grows.” Sannam S4’s research showed that 68% of employers surveyed thought that international graduates only returned to India after their studies because they couldn’t secure a job overseas. Employers from different sectors had varying opinions about international degree holders. 39% of those hiring in the technology, media and telecom sector said they were “extremely likely” to employ international degree holders. Conversely, 63% of those in the professional services sector said they were “not at all likely” to employ those who had studied abroad. Marlow told The PIE that professional services firms are likely to have significant recruitment schemes in India, which recruit from campus in volume, and that this may explain why they did not favour international graduates.Employers did, however, view internationally-educated graduates as particularly strong at problem-solving, networking and being adaptable when compared to their Indian- educated peers. Likewise, graduates gave mixed responses to their experience of studying in the UK and how well it prepared them for future employment. Of those students who graduated from a UK institution, 66% said their degree gave them an advantage over Indian counterparts. Ho w e v e r, w h e n i t c a m e t o satisfaction with salaries, the graduates were not as positive.

Unlike other laureates, who arrived in tuxedos and fancy Red Carpet dresses, the couple glorified the prestigious occasion in traditional Indian attire. Abhijit wore a black bandhgala jacket paired with an off-white dhoti, and wife Esther wore a blue, two-toned saree, while Michael Kremer was spotted wearing a black suit. ‘The Nobel Prize’ tweeted “Watch Abhijit Banerjee, Esther Duflo and Michael Kremer receive their medals and diplomas at the #NobelPrize award ceremony today. Congratulations! They were awarded the 2019 Prize in Economic Sciences “for their experimental approach to alleviating global poverty.”
The Twitter post was flooded with comments and congratulatory wishes from across the world, with 1.4K retweets and 3.6K likes. The three economists were awarded medals and the prize money of nine million Swedish krona (approx Rs 6.7 crore), which will be shared among them. As “#AbhijitBanerjee” trends on Twitter,

While another wrote: “We live in an era where people are banning movies and pre wedding shootings for cultural in-approproation, whereas progressive Indians like #AbhijitBanerjee and her better half are showing the world what Indian culture is. Thank you for making us proud sir.” Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor Banerjee, an alumnus of Jawaharlal Nehru University and the University of Calcutta, is the second person of Indian Origin to be awarded the prize after Amartya Sen who received it in 1998. entertainment ‘Kabir Singh’ represents more than 70 per cent of urban India: Anurag Kashyap
W
hy shouldn’t a film like “Kabir Singh” exist when it represents more than 70 to 80 per cent of urban India, says director Anurag Kashyap who believes it is important to make people uncomfortable rather than stay politically correct in cinema. There has always been a debate around the role or responsibility of artistes and whether they should bear accountability for the art they put out but Kashyap says one cannot enforce the existence of one kind of cinema.
The Kapil Sharma Show: Producer Salman Khan Has Plans To Remove Kapil Sharma Next Season?
The Kapil Sharma Show has been raking high TRPs for Sony TV with their successful episodes every week. Even though Kapil Sharma has been busy in his personal life as he recently got blessed with a baby girl, the comedian as promised fulfilled his commitments by hosting Dabangg 3 and Good Newwz’s promotional episodes. But now Salman Khan who’s producing the show has plans to remove the host. Here’s why Recently, Salman Khan along with Sonakshi Sinha, Saiee Manjrekar, Kiccha Sudeep, Prabhudheva and brother Arbaaz Khan graced The Kapil Sharma Show for the promotions of their upcoming film, Dabangg 3. It all started when Kapil explained how Salman was just an actor during Dabangg, turned a producer during Dabangg 2 and now has even writing credits with Dabangg 3. He furthermore went onto mock asking whose job will he snatch in Dabangg 4!
“The first thing is, it’s up to you whether you want to take it on or not. If I disagree with something, if I don’t consider cinema of a kind cinema at all, I can’t say it cannot exist. I can’t enforce that. We can all co-exist,” Kashyap told PTI. “Like there were a lot of controversies around ‘Kabir Singh’. Everybody can make any film and should make any film, should represent all kinds of people. ‘Kabir Singh’ does represent more than 75-80 per cent of urban India. Why not put it out? If I disagree with it, I won’t see it. But sometimes it’s necessary to see ourselves,” the director said. Kashyap was speaking on the sidelines of the launch of Audible Suno, an audio show platform, where he has directed “Thriller Factory” which chronicles crime-stories of the country’s best pulp fiction. The episodes are voiced by Tabu, Nawazuddin Siddiqui and other major stars from Hindi cinema. Tabu, who has done her share of dark characters in films like “Andhadhun” and “Maqbool”, said she’s not in control over how
people interpret her art. “What people take from it is really not in my control. I can just be mindful of what I am choosing. I have to be clear about ‘why am I doing this film?’ or ‘what value does it have for me personally?’” the actor said. Kashyap added, “Being politically correct all the time doesn’t help. India as a country, for 75 years, has made films with positive messages, all love stories with happy endings. Where has it brought us? It is very important to make people uncomfortable sometimes.” As the controversy around “Kabir Singh” picked steam, people also gave examples of Kashyap’s “Gangs of Wasseypur” and if its
Here’s why Sharmila Tagore can’t stop praising Kareena Kapoor Khan
K
areena Kapoor Khan has been hosting a radio show for a while where she hosts celebrities and asks them some interesting and funny questions. The latest one to be her guest on the show was none other than legendary actress and her mother-in-law Sharmila Tagore. She looked radiant in a saree as she graced her show. The veteran actress made an interesting revelation about the family. She was heard praising Kareena saying that she’s always prompt with text replies, something even her children Saif and Soha aren’t good at. She said, “I like your consistency. I like the way you keep in touch because I know that if I sent you a message, you will invariably answer. Saif would, not Soha. Soha most certainly won’t reply. I mean, she will take time, but you will reply.” Kareena Kapoor Khan is currently busy promoting her upcoming release Good Newwz where she will be seen opposite Akshay Kumar. She’s also busy shooting for Laal Singh Chaddha where she will be seen opposite Aamir Khan.
leading men, Manoj Bajpayee and Nawazuddin would take responsibility for the violence in the film. When asked how does he view the argument, Nawazuddin said, “What happens in the society, who takes responsibility for that? Films show a very diluted version of what happens out there.” Kashyap said artistes are always attracted to everything forbidden. “When you’re told as a kid by your mother not to touch something, you go and touch exactly that. So the human curiosity, for actors and everyone, takes them to things which are forbidden. I’m forever attracted and in love with what is forbidden,” he added.

P
eople suffering from diabetes can be divided into five separate groups, not just two, as commonly thought, says a new study. Diabetes is currently divided into two major groups — Type-1 diabetes which accounts for around 10 per cent of the cases and Type-2 diabetes which accounts for 85-90 per cent of the cases. Type-1 diabetes, which generally develops in childhood, is an autoimmune condition where the pancreas produces little or no insulin. A little weed may not harm your kidneys Antibiotics can affect cancer treatment NEW YORK: Long-term antibiotic overuse or misuse may make people drug resistant and vulnerable to infection, impacting cancer treatment efficacy in a negative way, new research suggests. Antibiotic use is known to have a near-immediate impact on our gut microbiota and any negative impact of antibiotics on cancer treatment appears to go back to the gut and to whether the microbiota is needed to help activate the T cells driving treatment response, said Gang Zhou from Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University in the US. Immune cells like T cells recognize the abnormal proteins often present on cancer cells and infiltrate to attack the tumor. However, as the tumor grows, it often devises ways to suppress the activity of the T cells. “It likely depends on what types of therapy physicians are giving to patients and how often they also are giving them antibiotics,” said Zhou, corresponding author of the study in the journal Oncotarget. Infections are typically the biggest complication of chemotherapy, and antibiotics are commonly prescribed to prevent and treat them. — IANS

The study, published in The American Journal of Medicine, found no association between current or previous marijuana use and kidney function. “Our research provides some reassuring evidence suggesting that there is no detrimental effect of
infrequent, relatively light use of marijuana on kidney function among healthy adults under age 60,” said lead investigator Murray Mittleman, professor of Epidemiology at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. “However, our research does not address heavy users, the elderly, or those with pre-existing chronic kidney disease. Group 5, the mild age-related diabetes is the largest group and consists of the most elderly patients. “The most insulin resistant patients (Group 3) have the most to gain from the new diagnostics as they are the ones who are currently most incorrectly treated,” Groop said.

TORONTO: Scientists have identified a gene responsible for neurodevelopmental disorders, including autism, an advance that may pave the way for developing treatments. The findings published in the journal Molecular Psychiatry showed that alterations of the gene thousand and one amino-acid kinase 2 (TAOK2) plays a direct role in these disorders. TAOK2 is located in the autism spectrum disorder and schizophrenia-associated chromosomal deletion region. —IANS

early sixty per cent cases of hearing loss in children are preventable with early intervention, says former Australian cricket sensation Brett Lee, emphasizing the need to make the newborn screen test mandatory in India. Deafness, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), refers to the complete loss of hearing ability in one or both ears, while “hearing impairment” refers to both complete and partial loss of hearing ability. for hearing mandatory as well as for educating parents of children with hearing loss so that they make the best intervention at the earliest,” said Lee, who began spearheading the cause of hearing loss three years ago, in wake of an accident that temporarily impaired his son’s hearing. The former pacer is also the Global Hearing Ambassador with global implantable hearing aid firm Cochlear. Change lifestyle, prevent cancer Following a healthy way of living — exercising, eating fibers and quitting smoking, among others — can lower thousands of cancer cases a week, says a study IANS, LONDON
E
xercising, quitting smoking and shedding weight may be key lifestyle behaviors that can cut down thousands of cancer cases a week, say researchers, including one of Indian-origin. The other major preventable lifestyle behavior includes drinking alcohol. Reducing exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation and air pollution, and eating good amount of fiber can also go a long way in keeping the deadly disease at bay. Following these can prevent nearly four in 10 cancer cases in the UK, says the Cancer Research UK, a non-profit, in a paper published in the British Journal of Cancer. The study showed that more than one in 20 cancer cases could be prevented by maintaining a healthy weight.

Knee pain can trigger depression in elderly IANS, TOKYO
K LONDON: Researchers have found that an anti-inflammatory drug — licensed for treating rheumatoid arthritis — may help patients in the early stages of stroke to reduce harmful inflammation. The study published in the journal Stroke follows earlier research that shows the drug given as an intravenous therapy reduces inflammation in stroke and sub-arachnoid haemorrhage patients. Researchers define stroke as the most common cause of disability in adults and a leading cause of death worldwide. “Though strokes affect different people in different ways, for many people they have a devastating effect on their long-term health and wellbeing. Excessive inflammation after a stroke is known to be harmful and predicts a worse outcome in patients,” said co-author Craig Smith, Professor at The University of Manchester. The drug Kineret was given as a small injection just under the skin without giving the patients any identifiable adverse reactions. nee pain in the elderly, which can damage the quality of life, can make them prone to depression, researchers say. Osteoarthritis occurs when a joint becomes inflamed, usually because the protective cartilage and other tissues that cushion joints like the knee become damaged and worn over time. Knee pain from osteoarthritis
can make it harder to take care of yourself, which can damage your quality of life. In turn, it can lead to depression. The study, led by Yuji Nishiwaki from the Toho University in Japan, showed that elderly who experienced knee pain at night while in bed, while putting on socks, or while getting in or out of a car were more likely to report having symptoms of depression. Prevention is the most cost-effective way of beating cancer,” Kumar said. “Obesity is a huge health threat right now, and it will only get worse if nothing is done. Banning junk food TV adverts before the 9 p.m. watershed is an important part of the comprehensive approach needed,” said Linda Bauld from the nonprofit. Two years later, nearly all of them completed follow-up interviews. The participants answered questions about their knee pain and were evaluated for symptoms of depression. Nearly 12 per cent of the participants had developed symptoms of depression. Another recently published study showed that both knee pain and functional impairments in elderly individuals are associated with the development of depressive symptoms. “Examining elderly people’s responses to questions about pain at night and difficulties performing daily activities may be an efficient way of identifying those at high risk of developing depressive symptoms,” the researchers said.
Pre-schoolers with ADHD may have reduced brain volume IANS, NEW YORK
P
re-schoolers with symptoms of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) may have reduced brain volumes in regions essential for behavioral control, says a new study. ADHD is the most commonly diagnosed form of psychopathology during pre-school years, and during early childhood, it is associated with significant long-term health. The study represents the first comprehensive examination of cortical brain volume in pre-school children with ADHD and provides an indication that anomalous brain structure is evident in the early stages of development.
ADHD is the most commonly diagnosed form of psychopathology during pre-school years, and during early childhood, it is associated with significant long-term health.
According to the researchers, the findings can help in determining new ways to predict which children
are most at risk for developing ADHD. “These findings confirm what parents have known for a while
— even in very young children, ADHD is a real biological condition with pronounced physical and cognitive manifestations,” said lead author E. Mark Mahone from the Kennedy Krieger Institute. For the study, published in the Journal of the International Neuropsychological Society, researchers studied the brain development of 90 medication-naive pre-schoolers between the ages of four and five years. They used high-resolution anatomical MRI scans along with cognitive and behavioral measures. “MRI research in children can be challenging — particularly so for young children with ADHD — as it requires them to lie still for periods up to 30-40 minutes,” said Mahone.

community news USCIS Announces Implementation of H-1B Electronic Registration Process for Fiscal Year 2021 USCIS NEWS RELEASE WA S H I N G T O N , D C — U. S . Citizenship and Immigration Services today announced that it has completed a successful pilot testing phase and is implementing the registration process in the next H-1B lottery. Employers seeking to file H-1B cap-subject petitions for the fiscal year 2021 cap, including those eligible for the advanced degree exemption, must first electronically register and pay the associated $10 H-1B registration fee. The electronic registration process will dramatically streamline processing by reducing paperwork and data exchange, and will provide an overall cost savings to petitioning employers. Under this new process, employers seeking H-1B workers subject to the cap, or their authorized representatives, will complete a registration process that requires only basic information about
their company and each requested worker. USCIS will open an initial registration period from March 1 through March 20, 2020. The H-1B random selection process, if needed, will then be run on those electronic registrations. Only those with selected registrations will be eligible to file H-1B cap-subject petitions. Historically, employers filed their full, and often voluminous, H-1B capsubject petitions with USCIS, after which USCIS would select eligible petitions through a random selection
process. This process resulted in unnecessary paperwork and incurred mailing costs for both petitioners and the agency. “By streamlining the H-1B cap selection process with a new electronic registration system, USCIS is creating cost savings and efficiencies for petitioners and the agency, as only those selected will now be required to submit a full petition,” said USCIS Deputy Director Mark Koumans. “The agency completed a successful pilot testing phase, which included sessions with industry representatives, and implementation of the registration system will further the goal of modernizing USCIS from a paper-based to an online-filing agency.” USCIS will post step-by-step instructions informing registrants how to complete the registration process on its website along with key dates
and timelines as the initial registration period nears. USCIS will also conduct public engagements and other outreach activities to ensure registrants and interested parties are familiar with the new registration system. The agency may determine it is necessary to continue accepting registrations, or open an additional registration period, if it does not receive enough registrations and subsequent petitions projected to reach the numerical allocations. DHS formally created the H-1B registration requirement in the final rule, Registration Requirement for Petitioners Seeking To File H-1B Petitions on Behalf of Cap-Subject Aliens (PDF), published on Jan. 31, and effective on April 1, 2019. DHS intends to publish a notice in the Federal Register in the coming weeks to formally announce implementation of the H-1B registration system and provide additional details on the process. On Nov. 8, 2019, DHS published a final rule establishing a $10 H-1B registration fee. The registration fee final rule is effective on Dec. 9, 2019, and will apply to registrations submitted during the initial and future registration periods.
CBP Officers Detect Impostor to Counterfeit Slovenian Passport of an Indian National
CBP officer in the airport passenger environment
CBP NEWS RELEASE
STERLING, VA. – U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers detected a counterfeit Slovenian passport in the possession of an Indian national Sunday at Washington Dulles International Airport. .The man arrived from Accra, Ghana and presented the Slovenian passport as his own for admission to a CBP officer. The inspecting officer detected inconsistencies while inspecting the traveler and his passport, and referred him to a secondary examination. Secondary officers detected several irregularities with the passport and on a Slovenian national identity card, and determined the documents to be counterfeit. During questioning, the traveler admitted to being a 20-yearold Indian national and that the documents were not his. Posing as someone else when attempting to enter the United States is a serious violation of U.S. immigration law that may result in criminal prosecution. After a thorough investigation, criminal
prosecution was ultimately not pursued in this case and the man departed the United States charged with an administrative violation of U.S. immigration law. “Impostors and counterfeit travel and identity documents pose a potentially significant national security threat to the United States,” said Casey Durst, CBP’s Director of the Baltimore Field Office. “Customs and Border Protection officers remain ever vigilant to intercept travelers and counterfeit documents because enforcing our nation’s immigration laws is just one way in which CBP
contributes to the safety and security of America.” CBP’s border security mission is led at ports of entry by CBP officers from the Office of Field Operations. Please visit CBP Ports of Entry to learn more about how CBP’s Office of Field Operations secures our nation’s borders. On average, CBP officers intercepted 14 fraudulent documents and refused admission to 764 travelers every day at Ports of Entry across the United States. Terrifying Rumors About White Vans are Circulating on Facebook
BY A STAFF WRITER
MENLO PARK, CA — Terrifying rumors initially propelled by Facebook’s algorithms have sparked fears that men driving white vans are kidnapping women all across the United States for sex trafficking and to sell
their body parts. While there is no evidence to suggest this is happening, much less on a national, coordinated scale, a series of viral Facebook posts created a domino effect that led to the mayor of a major American city issuing a warning based on the unsubstantiated claims. The latest online-induced panic shows how viral Facebook posts can stoke paranoia and make people believe that spotting something as common as a white van, can be deemed suspicious and connected to a nationwide cabal. Indeed, while there is no hard evidence of any such phenomenon, unconfirmed reports of suspicious white vans in cities across the US have been shared hundreds of thousands of times on Facebook in recent weeks and have been seen by potentially millions of Facebook users. At least one person who drives a white van has reported being harassed for it as a result of the rumors.

Dulles CBP Officers Seize $21,000 in Unreported Currency from Pakistan-bound Traveler CBP NEWS RELEASE STERLING, VA. – U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers seized $21,255 in unreported currency from a U.S. woman destined to Pakistan Friday at Washington Dulles International Airport. CBP officers seized $21,000 in unreported currency from a woman destined to Pakistan December 6, 2019.While CBP officers conducted an outbound inspection of passengers on a Turkey-bound flight, officers encountered the woman and asked how much currency she possessed. She reported $6,000 and confirmed that she understood federal currency reporting requirements. Officers discovered several envelopes in her carry-on baggage with a total of $21,255 in U.S. currency. Officers released $255 to the woman for humanitarian purposes and seized $21,000 for violating federal currency reporting requirements. It is legal to carry large sums of currency into or out of the United States. However, federal law requires that travelers who possess $10,000 or more in currency or other monetary instruments must report it all to a CBP officer at the airport, seaport, or land border crossing when entering or leaving the country. Read more about currency reporting requirements. Consequences for violating U.S. currency reporting laws are severe;
penalties may include seizure of most
or all of the traveler’s currency, and potential criminal charges. “Customs and Border Protection officers know that concealed bulk currency is oftentimes proceeds from alleged illicit activity and it may be used to fund transnational criminal organizations,” said Casey Durst, Director of Field Operations for CBP’s Baltimore Field Office. “CBP remains committed to enforcing our nation’s laws, including federal currency reporting laws, at our nation’s international ports of entry.” All travelers, both U.S. citizens and foreign visitors, are encouraged to Know Before You Go to help ease their international arrivals inspection, and to visit CBP’s Travel website to learn more about rules governing travel to and from the U.S.

Foster, Merkley Lead Bicameral Investor Choice Act BY A STAFF WRITER
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, U.S. Rep. Bill Foster (D-IL) and U.S. Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-OR) introduced the Investor Choice Act, which would prohibit pre-dispute mandatory (or “forced”) arbitration agreements and ban prohibitions on class action lawsuits in customer contracts that investors often must enter into in order to receive services from broker-dealers or investment advisers. The bill is cosponsored in the House by Reps. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY), Sean Casten (D-IL), Gregory Meeks (D-NY), Stephen Lynch (D-MA), Jim McGovern (D-MA), and Jan Schakowsky (D-IL). In the Senate, the legislation is cosponsored by Sens. Dick Durbin (D-IL), Richard Blumenthal (DCT), Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), Bob Menendez (D-NJ), and Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI). Pre-dispute mandatory arbitration contracts require investors to submit to arbitration if they have been wronged, surrendering their right to seek recourse in a court or in front of a jury. This particularly harms investors who do not have the leverage to negotiate standard take-it-or-leave-it contracts. Moreover, class action prohibitions hurt investors by deterring claims that may not be economically feasible to litigate individually, but address a harm experienced by many investors. The Investor Choice Act would restore these legal protections for investors. “Individuals shouldn’t be forced to surrender their legal rights because
they choose to work with a financial advisor or broker dealer to plan for their retirement and invest their hard earned money,” said Congressman Foster “This legislation levels the playing field for consumers and prevents them from being victims of a rigged system that denies them fair legal recourse if they are wronged. I’m proud to work with Senator Merkley on this important legislation for American consumers.” “Every consumer deserves a fair shot at justice when wronged,” said Senator Jeff Merkley. “But when an investment advisor or broker chooses the judge, pays the judge, and promises future business to the judge, you know that the system is rigged against you. Let’s restore justice and pass this bill.” “Strong protections for Main Street investors are critical.” said Congressman Casten. “When you are trying to save for your child’s education or for your own retirement, you should not be forced to waive your right to seek a jury trial when a dispute arises. Working families must be empowered to save for their futures and fully advocate for themselves if they are wronged. This bill does just that.” “Forced arbitration prevents people from seeking justice in court if they are wronged by a financial advisor or broker-dealer. Our bill restores an individual’s right to fair legal processes if they have been victimized. This commonsense legislation will help strengthen our securities markets and protect investments made by working families,” Senator Durbin said.

community news ICE Arrested 90 More Indian Students in Fake Varsity Sting Operation
BY A STAFF WRITER
FARMINGTON HILLS, MI – A total of about 250 students, mostly from India, have been arrested in a sting operation by U.S. immigration officials who set up a fake university in sting operation, according to media reports. About 90 students were arrested in recent months in addition to the 161 the officials said they had arrested in March after the crackdown on those enrolled at the fake institution called the University of Farmington. The institution was set up by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement section of the Department of Homeland Security originally to catch those who recruited students on false promises and students got caught up in the operation. The University of Farmington had no real faculty or facilities and after getting admission there, students were able to work elsewhere using its practical training program. The crackdown began in January when about 100 students were arrested in early morning raids, the American Telugu Association reported at that time.
It said that warrants had been issued for 600 students. Around the same time, the DHS filed charges in a federal court in Detroit against eight persons who allegedly acted as recruiters for scam. In court documents, the DHS admitted that it set up the University of Farmington with undercover agents as staff in Farmington Hills, Michigan, to target foreign students who were staying in the U.S. without proper authorization. Prosecutors called it a “pay-to-stay” scam because the students paid the recruiters to get documents from the fake university to enable them to stay on in a student visa without attending classes. Farmington was the second fake university known to have been created by ICE for sting operations against student visa scams. As per report the eight recruiters in the University of Farmington case were convicted after they admitted guilt in court and seven of them have been sentenced to terms ranging from a year to two years. The remaining
person, Phanideep Karnati, 35, is to the sentenced in January, it said. Those sentenced were identified as Barath Kakireddy, 29, Suresh Kandala, 31, Santosh Sama, 28, Avinash Thakkallapally, 28, Aswanth Nune, 26, Naveen Prathipati, 26, and Prem Rampeesa. Court documents showed that the recruiters were paid between $5,000 and $20,000 at meetings with Homeland Security Investigations agents involved in the university for recruiting the students. The Washington Post, quoting ICE, said that 80 percent of those who were arrested chose to voluntarily leave the U.S., while 10 percent of the students received a “final removal order,” either from an immigration judge or from Customs and Border Protection authorities. The remaining 10 percent of students have challenged their deportations, with the Executive Office for Immigration Review, according to an ICE statement. As per report the university charged an average of $12,000 per student per year and probably made millions of dollars. An ICE spokesperson said in January that the arrested students would only face civil penalties and not criminal charges. The State Department responded with a statement accusing the students of knowingly participating in a scam. “All participants in this scheme knew that the University of Farmington had no instructors or classes (neither online nor in-person) and were aware they were committing a crime in an attempt to fraudulently remain in the United States,” it said.

Sikh Uber Driver Allegedly Racially Abused, Strangled by Passenger
BY A STAFF WRITER BELLINGHAM, WA — An Indian American Sikh Uber driver was allegedly racially abused and strangulated by a passenger Dec. 5, in Bellingham, Washington. According to media reports, the driver, who chose to remain anonymous, picked up Grifin Levi
Sayers. The driver later made a 911 call saying he had been attacked by his passenger, The police then arrested and booked 22-year-old Sayers on suspicion of second-degree assault and a failure-to-appear warrant for fourth-degree assault. According to police records, he was released on $13,000 bail the next day. The driver told the police that Sayers took the cab to make some purchases and then returned to the pick-up location. It was at this point that the passenger became abusive and grabbed the driver by his throat and squeezed it violently. He also made racial comments about the driver’s ethnicity. The driver somehow managed to get out of the cab to make a 911 call. When the police arrived, they were able to locate Sayers nearby and arrested him. Hate crimes against Sikhs in the U.S. have always been on the radar for civil rights and minority groups. AntiSikh hate crimes rose by a whopping 200 percent since 2017, according to an FBI report. Even as Sikh groups and minority organizations continue to make attempts to educate Americans on Sikhism and the tenets of its faith, Sikhs are often mistakenly targeted because of their turbans. A statement from the Sikh Coalition adds: “This was very clearly a hate crime under the definition of the law,” said Amrith Kaur, Sikh Coalition legal director. “The attacker knew his Uber driver was Sikh, and he chose to both physically and verbally attack him because of it. We are thankful that the Bellingham Police Department are investigating bias as a motivator, and we trust that the Whatcom County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office will appropriately charge him with a hate crime moving forward.
