TRUMP SAYS HE WANTS ‘IMMEDIATE TRIAL’ AS LAWMAKERS LEAVE FOR RECESS
P
resident Trump on Thursday said he wants “an immediate trial” in the Senate after the House adjourned for a twoweek recess without sending articles of impeachment to the upper chamber. The president lashed out at House Democrats, who are holding on to the articles as p ar t of an effort to secure more favorable terms in the Senate proceedings. “So after the Democrats gave me no Due Process in the House, no lawyers, no witnesses, no nothing, they now want to tell the Senate how to run their trial,” Trump tweeted. “Actually, they have zero proof of anything, they will never even show up. They want out. I want an immediate trial!” He went on to claim Democrats “don’t even want to go to trial! The House on Wednesday night impeached Trump for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. All but four Democrats voted for both articles, while no Republicans voted for either
article. The White House has signaled it wants a quick trial in the Senate to exonerate the president. But the next votes are scheduled in the House for Jan. 7, meaning Democrats will not be able to transmit articles or appoint impeachment managers before then. The Senate, meanwhile, is expected to go on recess until Jan. 3. Un d e r t h e chamber’s rules the Senate trial will start the day after the House sends the articles of impeachment to the chamber, unless that day is a Sunday. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) met Thursday to discuss terms of a possible trial, though they did not appear to reach an agreement on witnesses or requests for additional documents. Trump has blasted Democrats over the tactic of withholding the articles, ripping Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) in a tweet and suggesting earlier in the day that it is unconstitutional despite no indication that is the case.
Pelosi afraid to present her ‘phony impeachment hoax’ to Senate: Trump
U
S President Donald Trump has again hit out at House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi saying that she is afraid to present her “phony impeachment hoax” to the Senate. “Pelosi feels her phony impeachment HOAX is so pathetic she is afraid to present it to the Senate, which can set a date and put this whole SCAM into default if they refuse to show up! The Do Nothings are so bad for our Country!,” Trump said in a tweet. Earlier, the White House had said in a statement that President Trump is confident that the Senate will not vote to impeach him after the House of Representatives voted in favour of the impeachment motion. US House of Representative on Wednesday voted to support the two articles of impeachment against President Trump. The trail in the Republican-controlled Senate is likely to begin in January, Al Jazeera reported. However, that is only after House Democrats send articles of impeachment to the Senate. This is not the first time, the US President had targeted Pelosi. In a scathing letter to Pelosi a day before the House was to vote on impeachment, Trump protested against the “partisan impeachment crusade being pursued by the Democrats”. Stressing that the Articles of Impeachment introduced by the House Judiciary Committee were not recognisable under any standard of Constitutional theory, interpretation, or jurisprudence, the US President in his six-page letter to Pelosi had said, “They include no crimes, no misdemeanours, and no offences whatsoever.
AUSTRALIAN PM SCOTT MORRISON SORRY FOR HOLIDAY IN HAWAII AS FIRE FIGHTERS DIE IN BUSHFIRE
S
cott Morrison has apologised for going on holiday while Australia is in the grip of an extended bushfire crisis and a recordbreaking heatwave. In a statement on Friday morning the prime minister explained he had brought forward his leave with his family due to the need to travel to Japan and India in January. “I deeply regret any offence caused to any of the many Australians affected by the terrible bushfires by my taking leave with family at this time,” Morrison said Morrison later confirmed the holiday was in Hawaii, seeking to explain the trip’s secrecy by suggesting he had tried to give his daughters “a bit of a surprise” despite several reporters stating the prime minister’s office had denied reports he was in Hawaii after he and his family had arrived. The holiday – which was due to conclude on Monday – will now be cut short, with Morrison expected back in Australia on Saturday. “I have been receiving regular updates on the bushfires disaster as well as the status of the search for and treatment of the victims of the
White Island tragedy,” Morrison said in the statement.“The Commonwealth’s responsibilities have been well managed by the Acting Prime Minister, Minister [David] Littleproud and Minister [Marise] Payne. In a separate statement, Morrison expressed “sincere condolences and sympathies” to the families of two volunteer firefighters killed when a truck near the town of Buxton late on Thursday hit a tree and rolled off the road. “Our hearts go out to their families, friends and colleagues who have been working tirelessly beside them, particularly during this Christmas period,” he said. “Given these most recent tragic events, I will be returning to Sydney from leave as soon as can be arranged.” Morrison has described climate change as “one of many factors” in the bushfires, but has been accused of downplaying its threat and not doing enough on climate policy. Although he has repeatedly insisted Australia is meeting its international obligations to reduce carbon emissions, Australia was accused by about 100
countries of thwarting negotiations at last week’s UN climate summit in Madrid by using an accounting loophole to meet its emissions targets. Australia has received broad criticism internationally for its climate policies, with a group of thinktanks recently ranking the nation the worst-performing country on climate change from a list of 57. The Morrison government was specifically singled out as a “regressive force” in the report, but Morrison himself rejected the group’s findings as “not credible”. He also criticised the widespread student strikes to demand more action on climate change, saying he wanted “less activism in schools”. Morrison has long been a supporter of Australia’s fossil fuel industry. In a high-profile 2017 stunt, he brought a lump of coal into the House of Representatives and urged MPs: “Don’t be afraid”. The Liberal government has
faced criticism for years over its support for the proposed Adani coalmine in Queensland, which experts have said would lock in years of increased carbon emissions, threaten local wildlife and damage the Great Barrier Reef. Michael McCormack has served as acting prime minister since Monday, declaring his hometown of Wagga Wagga was the nation’s capital, while Morrison copped bad press for an international holiday in Hawaii. Morrison told 2GB Radio although he did not normally announce when he was going on leave “or say where we’re going”, he accepted that in the circumstances it had “understandably caused a lot of anxiety and I deeply regret that”. “I know Australians understand this and they’ll be pleased I’m coming back, I’m sure, but they know I don’t hold a hose, I don’t sit in a control room.” Morrison said his wife and two girls “like holidaying in Hawaii so we’ve had a few nice days here”. “It’s just unfortunate that it’s come at such an awful time, particularly for those living in and around Sydney and New South Wales. And it’s just devastating to be here and seeing what’s happening there.” Reporters including the BBC’s Frances Mao and The New Daily’s Samantha Maiden were advised by Morrison’s office earlier in the week that reports he was in Hawaii were incorrect.

CITIZENSHIP AMENDMENT ACT PROTESTS : AT LEAST 6 KILLED IN ANTIProtesters Set Car On CAA PROTESTS IN UP Fire, Cops Use Water By hi INDiA - Special Report
Cannons At Old Delhi
New Delhi: Hours after Bhim Army chief Chandrashekhar Azad led a massive protest against the new citizenship law at Delhi’s Jama Masjid and called for a protest march to Jantar Mantar, hundreds of protestors defied prohibitory orders and took to the streets of the national capital this evening in fresh protests against the controversial law. Delhi Police had denied permission to the Bhim Army chief to
New Delhi: At least six people have died in violence across Uttar Pradesh as thousands took to the streets protesting against the Citizenship Amendment Act. Internet services continue to be blocked in several parts of the country and Section 144 -- a law that bans gatherings of four or more people, effectively making protests illegal -- was imposed in cities across the UP and Karnataka. Congress President Sonia Gandhi, in a statement on Friday evening, called the new citizenship law “discriminatory” and accused the BJP-led central government using “brute force to suppress dissent”. She assured the people that her party “is fully committed to stand up and defend their fundamental rights and uphold the foundational values of our constitution.” Protesters in Old Delhi carrying Indian flags and “Save the Constitution” banners and marching from Jama Masjid to Jantar Mantar in the centre of
the city were stopped at Delhi Gate. Delhi Police put up barricades to block the protesters but as the crowd grew larger, and a vehicle was set on fire outside a police station, police resorted to using water cannons and batoncharges to control the situation. Earlier in the day, Bhim Army chief Chandrashekhar Azad led a massive protest against the controversial law at Jama Masjid and called for a protest march to Jantar Mantar. At least 11 protestors were injured and taken to a government hospital nearby. Delhi Metro has shut 17 station in response to the violence, including the busy Rajiv Chowk, Pragati Maidan and Khan Market stations. The Citizenship (Amendment) Act for the first time makes religion the test of citizenship in India. The government says it will help minorities from three Muslim-dominated countries to get citizenship if they fled to India because of religious persecution. Critics say it is designed to discriminate against Muslims and violates the secular principals of the constitution.
Metro Shutdown Update: 17 Metro Stations Have Been Shut In Delhi

In dramatic visuals the protestors - who were carrying Indian flags and “Save the Constitution” banners and marching from Jama Masjid in Old Delhi to Jantar Mantar in the centre of the city - were stopped at Delhi Gate as Delhi Police put up barricades to block them control the situation. Swelling by the minute, the crowd of protestors had refused to back down and disperse peacefully and, as tensions rose, a vehicle was set on fire outside the Daryaganj Police Station, forcing the cops, who had deployed anti-riot Vajra vehicles, to resort to water cannons and lathicharges to disperse the crowd and control the situation. Delhi Police, who came under fire for allegedly deploying excessive force in quelling protests on Sunday involving students from Jamia Millia Islamia, confirmed they neither lathi-charged protestors nor used tear gas this evening. “We used mild force and water cannon... did not lathi-charge protesters or lob tear-gas shells,” MS Randhawa, the Delhi Police PRO, was quoted by news agency PTI. Delhi Police also said several of its personnel had been injured and some protestors had been detained. At least 11 protestors were injured and taken to the LNJP Hospital. Delhi Metro has closed multiple stations in response to the violence, including the busy Rajiv Chowk, Pragati Maidan and Khan Market stations, to restrict movement of the protestors. facility is available at Mandi House,” the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation or DMRC said in a tweet. CAA Protest: BJP Will Have To Go If It Doesn’t Take Back Citizenship Amended Act, Says Mamata Banerjee
Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said the BJP will have to go if it doesn’t take back Citizenship Amended Act and drop plans to implement nation-wide NRC. Those born before 1987 or whose parents born before 1987 are Indians, says Government: Report Anyone born in India before 1987 or whose parents were born before 1987 are bona fide Indian citizens according to law and need not worry due to the Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019 (CAA) or a possible nationwide NRC, a top government official was quoted.
Q Mamata Banerjee Claries Remark Calling For UN Referendum On Citizenship Law . Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today said: “”Opinion poll is what I want. I did not say referendum. I said gana vote. I meant an opinion poll overseen by experts from the Human Rights Commission. And yes, experts from the UN also. “BJP can say whatever it wants. I am proud of my country. I will not be insulted by a party born in 1980. I have full faith in my country and it’s people. I want an opinion poll on CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act) and NRC (National Register of Citizens)”
Q Nitish Kumar’s Big Hint That Another BJP Ally Differs: What NRC Nitish Kumar today indicated that he will not implement the National Register for Citizens (NRC) in Bihar, adding to the troubles of ally BJP as it faces massive nationwide protests against the citizenship law and NRC. “Kahe ka NRC (What NRC)?” - the response to a journalist’s question finally revealed the Bihar Chief Minister’s view on the subject
Aligarh Muslim University students in hospital say police were ‘merciless’ ALIGARH: Days after the violence at Aligarh Muslim University over the amended citizenship law, four students remain admitted at the Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital’s trauma centre on the campus, one of them with his hand amputated, a doctor said.
He said he was part of a group of students peacefully holding a protest on Sunday night inside the campus near the Bab-e-Syed Gate, in solidarity with students at Delhi’s Jamia Millia University. They were refused water and policemen said they were
“I do not wish to say anything beyond the fact that I have lost my hand,” Mohammad Tariq, a PhD student, whose is being treated at the trauma centre told. Others alleged that the police had cracked down brutally on AMU students protesting peacefully against the Citizenship Amendment Bill. The police, however, said they faced stone-pelting by unruly protesters and had to resort to lathicharge and tear gas to contain them. AMU Vice Chancellor Tariq Mansoor has said he called the police into the campus after ‘an angry mob of thousands’ collected inside. The mob posed an ‘imminent danger’ to the lives of the students and university property of the university,” he said in an open letter after Sunday’s violence. But he has also complained of ‘excesses’ by police. Still admitted at the trauma centre, undergraduate Mohammad Tazeen, 19, alleged that he and several others faced a ‘merciless attack’ by police. He said he was dragged out of the AMU guest house number 3, thrashed there and again at the Malkhan Singh Hospital, “where nearly 20 of us were taken in police vans supposedly for treatment”.
‘anti-nationals’ should be sent to Pakistan, he alleged. Next morning, a senior doctor arrived at Malkhan Singh Hospital, plastered his hands and referred him and the others to the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College hospital, despite objections by policemen. Most of the students sent there were discharged after immediate treatment. Dr Ehtisham, Chief Medical Officer at the JN Hospital’s trauma centre, said four students are still undergoing treatment there. AMU Vice Chancellor Tariq Mansoor, who recently visited the hospital, said, “We are following up all the cases of serious injury.” He said Tariq, whose hands were amputated, will get the best possible treatment anywhere in the country, or even abroad, to ensure that he is able to lead a normal life. “Reports of police excesses have reached me and we will ensure that all such complaints are investigated by competent authorities,” he said. The AMU students were protesting against the law that grants Indian Citizenship Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Christians and Jains who entered the country before 2015 after facing religious persecution in three neighbouring countries.Muslims are excluded from this list.
Centre Open To Suggestions On Citizenship Act, Sources Say Amid Protests
New Delhi: Even as fresh violence erupted against the Citizenship Amendment Act, the Ministry of Home Affairs today said that the government has kept itself open to suggestions from the people before draft rules for the law are published. “Protesters should read the Citizenship Amendment Act. If they have some suggestions to offer instead of protesting, we are ready to listen to them,” a senior officer told. He said that although the Supreme Court has not stayed the publication of draft rules, the centre is taking precautionary steps before doing it because they are aware that the situation on the ground can deteriorate rapidly. The centre’s invitation for suggestions comes at a time when people in many parts of the country have risen in protest against the citizenship law, which they believe discriminates along religious lines. While three were killed across the country in nationwide protests on Thursday, as many as six died in fresh clashes that erupted in parts of Uttar Pradesh today. Protesters also clashed with police near Delhi Gate in the national capital.
Q Citizenship Act Protests:
Pinarayi Vijayan Slams “Fascist Mindset” Behind Detention Of Journalists In Mangaluru Kerala Chief Minister, in a statement, said his government will make all efforts to ensure the safety of journalists from Kerala travelling to Mangaluru to cover the protests against the new citizenship law. “I strongly condemn the attempt to portray journalists as troublemakers and their news gathering equipment as weapons. Onslaught on media freedom is a fascist mindset. There must be strong public sentiment against this,” Mr Vijayan said in a statement.

international US Issues Security Alert for its Citizens in India; Russia, Canada, UK, Israel Put Out Travel Advisory New Delhi: With protests against Citizenship Act fanning out across the nation, the United States government on Friday advised its US citizens in India to exercise caution, keep a low profile and avoid areas with demonstrations and civil disturbances. “US citizens in India should exercise caution in light of continued protests throughout the country in response to the approval of the Citizenship Amendment Act. The government imposed the law that prevents gatherings of four or more people – known as Section 144 – in Uttar Pradesh and according to press reports in parts of New Delhi as well, including the Red Fort. Curfews remain in place in some areas. Internet, mobile communications services, traffic, and public transport continue to be affected,” the US Embassy says in a statement. “Avoid areas with demonstrations and civil disturbances, keep a low profile, be aware of your surroundings, monitor local media for updates, review your personal security plans, notify friends and family of your safety, follow the instructions of local authorities,” the
advisory states. The advisory further says, “There are press reports that internet and mobile communications services have been suspended in parts of northeast and southeast Delhi at the direction of the government.” The Russian government also advised its citizens who are in India or planning to visit the country to be “vigilant, cautious, avoid crowds and refrain from visiting areas controlled by protestors”. L ast week, several countries including the US, UK, Israel, Canada
and Singapore, had asked their citizens to exercise caution while travelling to the Northeastern states in India, which have been witnessing violent protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), 2019. On Thursday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia said on Twitter, “Russian nationals currently in India or planning to visit the country soon are advised to be vigilant and cautious, avoid crowds and refrain from visiting areas controlled by protestors. Follow our updates.”
President Barack Obama at Conservative UN Climate Change Summit Party Wins Landslide Victory in U.K. Elections
I
n the United Kingdom, Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his Conservative Party won a landslide victory during Thursday’s decisive national election, dealing a devastating blow to Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour Party. Corbyn has said he will step down as head of the party after a “period of reflection.” It was the Labour Party’s worst electoral defeat in 84 years. The Conservatives are projected to win 364 seats in the British House of Commons versus only 203 for the Labour Party. This would give the Conservatives the largest majority since 1987, when Margaret Thatcher was in power. This is Labour Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell. The Conservative Party’s sweeping victory all but guarantees Brexit — Britain’s departure from the European Union — early next year. The party won resoundingly despite Prime Minister Boris Johnson being accused of Islamophobia, xenophobia and sexual harassment. We’ll have more on the British elections after headlines with British journalist George Monbiot and Cambridge University lecturer Priya Gopal.
K UA L A LUM P U R , Ma l ay s i a (AP) - Former U.S. President Barack Obama said Friday the Paris Agreement on climate change may fall short of expectations but is still the way forward to achieve progress and encourage businesses to invest in clean energy. Nearly 200 nations pledged to cut greenhouse emissions and help poor countries cope with the worst effects of an already warming planet under the accord signed in 2016 that was a cornerstone of Obama’s environmental legacy. But his successor, Donald Trump, abandoned that legacy when his administration notified the U.N. last month that the U.S. would pull out of the accord. Trump has said the agreement could impede growth and impinge on U.S. sovereignty. Speaking to young Asian leaders at a Kuala Lumpur conference hosted by his foundation, Obama said he knew the standards set by each country were insufficient but that the accord was practical and meant for the long haul. “I took satisfaction knowing that just by setting up the mechanism, we had created the ability to over time, turn up the standards, turn up the demands. Send a signal to businesses so that they started investing in more clean energy because they saw change coming,” he said in response to questions on the climate change crisis. O b am a d i d n’t m e nt i on U. S . withdrawal from the accord. He said there is no “silver bullet” to solve climate
change but he remains optimistic that global warming can be slowed down. “It’s too late for us not to have some impacts. And so there’s gonna have to be some adaptation that’s going to take place. The oceans will be rising and that is going to displace people. And so we’re going to anticipate and care for some of the consequences of that, including large-scale migration and disruptions that are going to be very costly. But there is a big difference between the ocean rising three feet and rising six feet,” he said. He urged young people not to despair but to use their voices to raise awareness on the issue. “We take two steps forward. We take one step back ... but the trajectory has been positive. And the best we can then do is just do our work and try to advance it as best we can. Understanding that we will not finish the job,” he said. “Most of the time, the way the world’s gotten to where we are now is small incremental victories, not big sweeping victories all at once.”
The US Embassy in New Delhi on December 14 had listed out precautions for its citizens visiting the northeastern states, asking them to avoid areas with “demonstrations and civil disturbances”, to be aware of their surroundings, and to keep a “low profile” among others. The UK government last week updated its travel advisory for India to warn its citizens against visiting the states in the Northeast. Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) last week issued a travel notice for Northeast India, advising Singaporeans trelling there to “exercise vigilance and caution”. Canada had advised its citizens on December 13 to avoid “non-essential” travel to Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Nagaland due to the protests. Israel last week warned its citizens to “completely avoid” going to Assam because of violent protests. The Israeli Foreign Ministry also warned against going to other states in the area due to the possibility of the violent protests spreading around.

south india ‘Vikram Still Intact, in Tilted Position’: ISRO Goes All Out to Establish Link With Chandrayaan 2
B
engaluru: The Indian Space Research Organisation continued to make all-out efforts to establish link with Chandrayaan-2’s ‘Vikram’ lander, now lying on the lunar surface after a hardlanding. Vikram, with rover ‘Pragyan’ housed inside it, hit the lunar surface after communication with the groundstations was lost during its final descent, just 2.1 km above the lunar surface, in the early hours of Saturday. “It had a hard-landing very close to the planned (touch-down) site as per the images sent by the on-board camera of the orbiter. The lander is there as a single piece, not broken into pieces. It’s in a tilted position,” an ISRO official associated with the mission claimed on Monday. “We are making all-out efforts to see whether communication can be re-established with the lander,” the official said. “An ISRO team is the on the job at ISROTelemetr y, Tracking and Command Network (ISTRAC) here.” Chandrayaan-2 comprises an orbiter, lander (Vikram) and rover (Pragyan). The mission life of the lander and rover is one lunar day, which is equal to 14 earth days. ISRO Chairman K Sivan had said on Saturday that the space agency would try to restore link with the lander for 14 days, and reiterated the resolve on Sunday after the orbiter’s camera
spotted it on the lunar surface. An ISRO official said: “Unless and until everything is intact (lander), it’s very difficult (to re-establish contact). Chances are less. Only if it had softlanding, and if all systems functioned, then only communication can be restored. Things are bleak as of now.”
“I will rate it (restoring link) as good,” another senior official of the space agency said, raising hope that lander springing to life again is not ruled out. “But there are limitations. We have experience of recovering spacecraft (which had lost contact) in geostationary
orbit. But here (in the case of Vikram), that kind of operational flexibility is not there. Already it’s lying on the surface of the Moon, and we cannot reorient it. Vital thing is antennas will have to pointed towards the ground station or the orbiter. Such operation is extremely difficult. At the same time, chances are good and we will have to keep our fingers crossed,” the official said. The of f icial s aid t he lander generating power is not an issue, as it has “solar panels all around it” and it also has “internal batteries” which “are not used much.” Vikram carried three payloads — Radio Anatomy of Moon Bound Hyp ers ensitive Ionosphere and Atmosphere (RAMBHA), Chandra’s Surface Thermo-physical Experiment (ChaSTE) and Instrument for Lunar Seismic Activity (ILSA).
‘Drugs or men?’ Mumbai
woman’s Uber Auto nightmare
A
29-year-old Mumbai resident had to undergo a horrific experience after she booked an Uber Auto to get home on Tuesday night.
The woman, who has since filed a complaint with Uber, booked the autorickshaw from a popular pub in Bandra west to get to her residence. She subsequently called the driver to ensure
HYDERABAD: AT NEW YEAR
PARTIES, SOUND AT 45 DECIBELS
UBER DRIVER he had the right location and the driver asked her something that she could not understand, after which she asked him to repeat his question.
Incomprehensible
After a couple of times, she realised that the driver was asking, “Drugs laaoon ya ladke (‘should I get drugs or men’)?” The victim, who still did not understand, asked him what he was talking about, to which he replied by asking, “How many men should I get?” Still unsure about what was happening, the woman asked if she was speaking to an Uber driver or someone else. The driver replied in Hindi saying, “Aren’t you the girl in the blue top standing outside the pub? Just tell me how many men you want me to bring.” Hyderabad: Police commissioner Anjani Kumar has issued certain guidelines to hotels with three stars and more, clubs and pubs with regard to New Year celebrations on the intervening night of Decem-ber 31 and January 1. They need to secure permission to hold events. They should arrange for CCTV cameras with recording facility at the entry and exit points and at parking places. They are to provide adequate personnel for traffic
management and security. Parking arrangements should not obstruct free flow of traffic. Fire arms should not be allowed at the venues. Organisers have to ensure decency of apparel, dance acts, gestures and words, the advisory said. There should not be any obscenity and nudity. The sound levels to be maintained at less than 45 decibels, the guidelines said. Passes, tickets or coupons should not be granted in excess of the capacity
of the venue. Minors should not be permitted in programmes organised for couples and in pubs and bars. Organisers were warned to ensure that patrons did not use drugs or narcotics. Mr Kumar said the establishments should not serve liquor beyond the hours permitted by the Excise department. It is the responsibility of the managements to make arrangements to provide drivers or cabs to inebriated customers to reach their destinations safely.
Terrified
As she realised what was happening, the terrified woman immediately cancelled her ride and narrated the incident to some friends who were with her at the time. The friends dropped her home and she filed an official complaint with Uber, while also tweeting about her ordeal. Uber responded to her on Twitter as well as by email to her complaint, and she also received a call from Uber on Wednesday.

By seeing her social media, we can clearly say that she is one of the sexiest ladies in B-town. She has set the new standards for herself after the

look was revealed by the makers. The camera more than that loves her and that is completely true with what we witness all across with her beautiful presence. The audience is gaga all over her and hence it’s not tough for someone who looks like Disha does, to be alluring and desirable. Disha Patani is beautiful, graceful and versatile all in one package and we sure can’t wait to watch this diva setting the screen on fire. On the work front, Disha will next be seen in Mohit Suri’s directorial ‘Malang” opposite Aditya Roy Kapoor. u s h ant Si ng h re c e nt ly m a d e headlines on being dropped as anchor of the popular crime show “Savdhaan India”, soon after he joined an anti Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) rally August Kranti Maidan in Mumbai. The actor says he doesnt expect too many celebrities of the film industry to join the nationwide protests, but he adds that it is the youth of a country that brings revolution and not celebrities. “I went to August Kranti Maidan to show solidarity with people who are afraid because of this new Act. There is a lot of confusion and there are a lot of questions in people’s mind regarding the Act, and that includes me. We are trying to raise our voice so that the government does something about it. It was a peaceful and wonderful protest. All of them were raising their voice for the country. I felt so proud of my fellow Mumbaikars, and Mumbai Police also handled the situation really well,” said Sushant, at a special screening of the web series “Rangbaaz Phirse”, which features him in the cast. Thousands of protesters had taken taken to the streets of Mumbai against the CAA on Thursday, and converged at August Kranti Maidan, where Mahatma Gandhi in 1942 had asked the British to quit India. Thursday’s rally included political party workers, students and a smattering of Bollywood personalities, who made out a strong case against the CAA and also the National Register of Citizens (NRC). About many A-List Bollywood stars refraining from commenting on the issue, he said: “When you are in a certain position, there is an absolute pressure of taking a stand on certain matters. People give you
a lot of love and you are what you are because of their love. So, they look at you with a certain hope and feel that you will say something about the issue.” Sushant added: “I want to tell people that everyone has their viewpoint and we all need to respect each other’s views. Celebrities who are talking against it (CAA), they are with you (people). So, appreciate that. We shouldn’t have any problem with celebrities who are not expressing their opinions. Whenever a revolution has happened -- not just in India -- it hasn’t been brought by celebrities. It has been brought by the youth of the country, whether it was our freedom fight or anything else. Now, too, the youth is opposing the government through peaceful protests.” Asked about the termination of his contract with the Star Bharat show “Savdhaan India”, Sushant said: “I don’t know what the exact reason is, but people are speculating. I went to the protest on December 16 in the evening, and in the midnight I got the message that I am no longer a part of the show. They didn’t give a proper explanation. Before that, I didn’t receive any mail or I didn’t have a word with them. I have tweeted today that the statement issued by Star Bharat is absolutely untrue and I have proof. I will file a complaint about this in CINTTA (Cine And TV Artistes’ Association).” Sushant Singh was associated with show as a host since 2012. Sishant will soon be seen in the web series Rangbaaz Phirse, which also features Jimmy Sheirgill, Sharad Kelkar, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, Sushant Singh, Spruha Joshi, Gul Panag and Harsh Chhaya. The show airs on Zee5 from December 20.

Lifes tyle Teenagers facing hallucinations are more prone to commit suicide
A
recent research has f o u n d t h at t e e n a g e r s facing hallucinations and psychological distress are the ones who are prone to commit suicide in future. The researchers from QIMR Berghofer and The University of Queensland’s Centre for Clinical Research examined various risk factors that prompted children between 12 and 17-year-old, who actually put their suicidal thoughts to actions. The research findings have been published in the international journal -- Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica. Primar y researcher and PhD candidate Emily Hielscher, from QIMR Berghofer’s Child and Youth Mental Health Research Group, said the study gathered psychological, social, and behavioural data from more than 1,600 Australian high school students.“Of those adolescents, 216 reported experiencing suicidal thoughts at the start of the study, and they were interviewed 12 months after that time to see who actually went on to attempt suicide,” said Hielscher. “Interestingly, we found that adolescents who said they’d been diagnosed with depression and had experienced stressful life events, such as bullying, were not at significantly
J
increased risk of suicide attempts,” she said. These findings support other studies that show such factors as depression and impulsivity are not good at predicting who will go on to transition from suicidal thoughts to attempts. Senior author and the head of QIMR Berghofer’s Mental Health Program, associate professor James Scott said the study provided a valuable insight into the serious and far-reaching public health issue. “There appears to be something about adolescents experiencing hallucinations which elevates their risk of suicide, on top of the effect of being distressed,” added Scott. “Knowing a person is at risk provides the chance for early intervention and help, and the findings also highlight the need to start a conversation about mental health screening of young people and more training for GPs in identifying the risk factors.” The study looked at data collected through self-reported questionnaires conducted at 12-month intervals from 2010 to 2012. Participants were offered support and those, who were identified as being at risk of suicide, were referred to the appropriate support service. The study was approved by the Human
Research Ethics Committee.
Jamaican wins Miss World title, says will work for sustainable change
amaica’s Toni-Ann Singh was crowned as Miss World 2019 on Saturday and said she wanted to use her title to work for “sustainable change” for women and their children. Asked about the value of beauty contests in today’s world of MeToo# and the drive for equality and respect for women, the 23-year-old graduate of Florida State University said beauty for her was the least important aspect of her achievement. “I want to make a change that’s sustainable. So if we’re talking women... it needs to be something that will make sure that their children and their children’s children have a different value of life,” an overjoyed Singh told reporters after winning the title in London.Singh did not specify what kind of change she had in mind. “It’s OK to celebrate things like beauty and attributes like strength and those things. But this is so much

more,” she said as she hugged her proud parents, Jahrine and Bradshaw. Describing herself as a “changed woman” after the experience of taking part in the Miss World competition, Singh added: “There’s no way I could chalk it up to just being about beauty, because that’s the last on the list, honestly.” Singh, who sang a version of the late singer Whitney Houston’s “I have nothing” in the competition, received her crown from last year’s winner, Vanessa Ponce of Mexico. Jamaicans attending the event hailed Singh’s win as a triumph also for their Caribbean island nation. “The fact that Miss World is won by a black person is very, very significant to us because it represents a lot in terms of our culture, in terms of how far the world has moved on,” said audience member Christine McDermott, who lives in London.

elemedicine has long been viewed as the most promising solution to various problems of healthcare access. Its potential ranges from addressing unavailability of super-specialised doctors outside big cities to mitigating poor doctor-patient ratios in rural areas to providing convenient care for cashrich but time-poor urban residents. Especially in the face of plummeting data costs and rapidly increasing internet penetration, the arguments for expanding telemedicine-based healthcare delivery seem self-evident. The real question therefore is why telemedicine has yet to take off in India. Startups like Lybrate and Doctalk raised millions of dollars to fuel growth but subsequently reported consecutive years of falling revenues, mounting losses and layoffs as they failed to develop sustainable business models. The public sector has not fared much better. There is limited data on performance and outcomes although one review of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO)’s telemedicine facilities in Madhya Pradesh described the overall condition as poor, with only 2 out of 10 patient nodes being classified as “functional”. Rhetoric notwithstanding, even the government seems ambivalent about telemedicine. Despite its focus on universal access through schemes
Facebook removes groups that promoted fake cancer treatment
Fa c e b o o k h a s banned several groups promoting fake cancer treatments under the social network’s rules about violent and criminal behaviour, the media reported. According to a report in BuzzFeed News, two of the groups that have been banned from Facebook together had around 33,000 members. The groups had promoted the use of black salve, a paste typically made from bloodroot and zinc chloride that is so caustic it eats away at the skin. Users in the groups were found suggesting the use of this paste as a cure for breast cancer, or even ingesting it to treat other ailments. While the US FDA (Food and Drug Administration) does not allow the sale of black salve, users in those banned Facebook groups provided information on where to buy it on websites hosted outside the country and have it shipped, or traded do-it-yourself recipes, said the report. Facebook wants everyone using its platform to feel safe and is continually reviewing its Groups for any violations, CNET on Wednes day quoted a spokesperson as saying. “(We) take appropriate action against any Group found to be breaking our policies as soon as we become aware of it,” the Facebook spokesperson said.
Telemedicine has long been viewed as the most promising solution to various problems of healthcare access. The real question therefore is why telemedicine has yet to take off in India.
TELEMEDICINE IN INDIA - OVERPROMISING like Ayushman Bharat, the 2019-20 telemedicine budget was reduced to 45 crores (down from 55 crores in 2018-19). Reviewing the long list of failed experiments suggests that there are at least three major problems which commonly hamstring projects. The first and most common is that many programs overlook the inherent limitations of remote care. Telemedicine is not a standalone panacea. It cannot substitute a face to face consult in all cases and it typically requires supporting infrastructure to be effective. It needs to
be integrated with basic diagnostics e.g. with routine lab tests, with high-quality assessment of basic vitals such blood pressure, with digital health records that can facilitate continuity of care over time, with access to medications, with tertiary care facilities in case specialised or advanced treatment is required, and with programs that facilitate access to tertiary care e.g. Ayushman Bharat. One or more of these are often overlooked. The second issue is that program desig n of ten fai ls to t a ke into consideration patients’ concerns around trustworthiness and quality.
Government guidelines recommend licensing for all telemedicine centres, but these are suggestions rather than statutory requirements. Programs are often designed without accounting for the challenge of changing established behaviour patterns. Patients who are used to the physical presence of a familiar doctor do not feel the same level of comfort, reassurance or confidence when it comes to a stranger on a screen in a white coat. Accounting for this in program design (e.g. by employing trained nurses to facilitate consults) can help circumvent such issues

Additionally, job stress can even lead to a more sinister and hidden type of hypertension that can go unnoticed during a regular medical checkup but may shoot up when measured in a different surrounding or situation. Funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, this study was carried out by a group of Canadian medical researchers who closely analysed 3500 white-collar workers from three different public institutions in Quebec, over a span of five years. For comparison, a control group of employees was chosen who spent less than 35 hours in the office each week. As against the control group, the employees spending more than 49 hours at work per week had 70 per cent higher chances of developing masked hypertension and 66 per cent higher chances of sustained high blood pressure Those who worked between 41 to 48 hours in a week were 54 per cent and 42 per cent more susceptible to masked and sustained hypertension respectively. To simulate in-clinic blood pressure readings, a trained assistant provided participants with a wearable monitor to check each participant’s resting blood pressure three times in one morning. Henrico County Public Schools in Virginia Declared Holiday For Diwali Festival
BY A STAFF WRITER RICHMOND, VA- Board of Henrico County Public Schools (HCPS) in Virginia, in its December 12 meeting, reportedly approved its 2020-2021 calendar, and it includes student holiday for Hindu festival Diwali. Applauding HCPS for this gesture, Hindus are urging all public school districts and private-charter-independent schools in Virginia to close on their most popular festival Diwali. Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada today, said that holiday on Diwali in Virginia schools would be a step in the positive direction in view of presence of a substantial number of Hindu students at schools around the state, as it was important to meet the religious and spiritual needs of Hindu pupils. Zed, who is President of Universal Society of Hinduism, indicated that since it was important for Hindu families to celebrate Diwali day together at home with their children; closing schools on Diwali would ensure that and would also display how respectful and accommodating Virginia
schools were to their faith. If schools had declared other religious holidays, why not Diwali, Rajan Zed asked. Holidays of all major religions should be honored and no one should be penalized for practicing their religion, Zed added. Zed suggested that all Virginia schools, public-private-charter-independent, to seriously look into declaring Diwali as an official holiday. Rajan Zed urged Virginia Governor Ralph S. Northam, Superintendent of Public Instruction Dr. James F. Lane and Board of Education President Daniel A. Gecker; to work towards adding Diwali as an official holiday in all the state’s public schools, and persuading the private-charter-independent schools to follow. Zed also thanked HCPS Board chaired by John W. Montgomery Jr. and HCPS Superintendent Dr. Amy E Cashwell for understanding the concerns of Hindu community. HCPS, whose tagline is “The right to achieve. The support to succeed.”, serves 50,182 students in 72 schools and centers.

U.S.CBP NEWS RELEASE CHICAGO, IL – U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the International Mail Branch (IMB) facility at O’Hare International Airport is opening a new satellite lab located at the IMB to help identify illegal narcotics being shipped through the mail. This permanent facility, owned by the FDA and run by CBP’s Laboratories and Scientific Services (LSS) and FDA scientists. This satellite lab will have greater capabilities to identify narcotics when officer’s available testing procedures are inconclusive. Currently, officers who seize narcotics use a handheld analysis tool to identify the possible narcotic. The handheld device has a limited library, so if the test is inconclusive the officers would set it aside and it would be sent to the main lab for further testing. With this new satellite location, CBP’s lab scientists are onsite and will be able to identify the narcotic faster. This means the narcotic is identified and CBP can send it off for destruction or adjudication. This year, the Chicago Field Office lead the nation in drug seizures, and 20% of the international mail coming into the United States is processed at O’Hare’s International Mail Branch. “Establishing this is a huge benefit,” said Anthony Malana, Assistant Director of LSS Directorate, Chicago. “It allows us to do an onthe-spot screening. It’s another tool we can use to identify and keep dangerous drugs out of the hands of the American public.” Currently, Chicago ranks second in the nation in opioid seizures. With this nation-wide epidemic The Chicago Field Office sought out a way to address this problem. Working with the USPS and the FDA, LSS, the scientific arm of CBP, and CBP officers were able to acquire this mobile asset and have it set up at the IMB. “This is representation of how the FDA, CBP and LSS
A FDA scientist demonstrates to Executive Assistant Commissioner William Ferrara how the equipment in the mobile lab (Photo by U.S.Customs & Border Protection)
can come together and fight this opioid crisis,” said Trish Hawes, Deputy Executive Director. “It’s the reason that started all these conversations anyway. We identified our problems sets and identified CBP issues and FDA issues. The way we thought we could do things better was to have a co-located facility. This brings us close to the proximity of the operators, eliminating our facility from being miles away.” This is CBP’s first facility co-located with FDA and LSS scientists with plans to incorporate this model at other mail facilities. “Having FDA scientists and CBP scientists on site with the new mobile lab will allow for much faster processing times for unidentifiable substances, such as synthetic narcotics, including fentanyl, from foreign countries,” said Michael Pfeiffer, Acting Port Director, Chicago. “This accelerated processing timeframe will allow the Office of Field Operations to complete seizures and controlled deliveries much more rapidly.”

In addition, they not only served to the visitors tasty snacks and treats from the respective countries but also enlightened them about the countries they have studied. Dressed in traditional, unique, and colorful attires of various countries, the students created a captivating spell and converted the venue into an Mini World.

There was a carnival-like atmosphere all around the venue, which was enveloped in a celebratory mood. “Food brings community together. We had fun-filled day with new snacks and treats to try”, said Senator Laura Ellman one of the

Trump Administration Takes Historic Steps to Lower U.S. Prescription Drug Prices FDA NEWS RELEASE WASHINGTON, DC- Today, President Trump, along with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, issued a notice of proposed rulemaking (NPRM) that, if finalized, would allow for the importation of certain prescription drugs from Canada. In addition, the Administration is announcing the availability of a new draft guidance for industry that describes procedures drug manufacturers can follow to facilitate importation of prescription drugs, including biological products, that are FDAapproved, manufactured abroad, authorized for sale in any foreign country, and originally intended for sale in that foreign country. The NPRM issued today is the first step in implementing a provision of federal law that would allow for the importation of certain prescription drugs from Canada under specific conditions that ensure the importation poses no additional risk to the public’s health and safety while achieving a significant reduction in the cost of covered products to the American consumer. The draft guidance issued today describes procedures for a drug manufacturer to submit documentation that demonstrates that the product offered for import from any foreign country is, in fact, an FDA-approved drug product, including that it is manufactured in accordance with the FDA-approved application. “Today’s announcement outlines two pathways for the safe importation of certain prescription drugs to help provide safe, effective, more affordable drugs to American patients,” said Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar. “These are historic actions by HHS and the FDA, and they represent the bold nature of President Trump’s agenda for lowering drug costs. The President has recognized the opportunity
to lower costs for American patients through safe importation, and we at HHS and FDA are delivering on that possibility through a safe, commonsense approach.” The NPRM would allow states and certain other non-federal government entities to submit importation program proposals to the FDA for review and authorization. An importation program could be co-sponsored by a pharmacist, a wholesaler, or another state or non-federal governmental entity. Referred to as Section 804 Importation Programs, these programs would be authorized by the FDA to manage the importation of certain prescription drugs that are approved in Canada and also meet the conditions in an FDA-approved drug application. Eligible prescription drugs would have to be relabeled with the required U.S. labeling prior to importation and undergo testing
for authenticity, degradation, and to ensure that the drugs meet established specifications and standards. Notably, these programs would also have to demonstrate significant cost reductions to the American consumer. “The FDA continues to assess and act on multiple opportunities to promote competition that can, in turn, help reduce drug prices and improve access to medicines for Americans,” said Assistant Secretary for Health Brett Giroir. “The proposed rule and draft guidance include procedures intended to protect the public’s health and safety. We look forward to receiving public comment on these draft policies, and we will take timely comments into account as we work to finalize the rule and guidance. Our ultimate goal is to provide a robust program that clearly lays out procedures to import drugs that could provide lower prices while also maintaining the
high quality Americans expect.” Of note, the draft guidance describes procedures drug manufacturers could follow to obtain an additional National Drug Code (NDC) for certain FDA-approved prescription drugs, including biological products, that were originally manufactured, and intended to be marketed, in a foreign country. The use of an additional NDC would allow greater flexibility for drug companies to offer these products at a lower price than what their current distribution contracts require. The draft guidance also recommends that the drug manufacturer include a statement on the product’s label and in the prescribing information to assist pharmacists to accurately identify, dispense and bill for these products. Prescription drugs, including biological products, imported under the pathway described in the draft guidance could be available to patients in a variety of settings, including hospitals, health care providers’ offices, or licensed U.S. pharmacies, and would include the FDA-approved labeling (including prescribing information). Comments on the NPRM are being accepted for 75 days after publication in the Federal Register and comments on the draft guidance are being accepted for 60 days after publication in the Federal Register. The FDA, an agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, protects the public health by assuring the safety, effectiveness, and security of human and veterinary drugs, vaccines and other biological products for human use, and medical devices. The agency also is responsible for the safety and security of our nation’s food supply, cosmetics, dietary supplements, products that give off electronic radiation, and for regulating tobacco products.

Suspect Pleads Not Guilty in Sikh Uber Driver Attack BY A STAFF WRITER BELLINGHAM, WA- A 22-year-old white male charged with felony malicious harassment and assault for allegedly strangling an Indian American Uber driver in Bellingham, Washington, pleaded not guilty Dec. 13 in Whatcom County, Washington Superior Court. Sikh American Uber driver Paramjit Singh, who wears his religiously-mandated articles of faith including a turban and beard, picked up Grifin Levi Sayers at his apartment early Dec. 5 morning, sometime before 4 a.m. Singh drove Sayers to get fast food and cigarettes and then drove him back to his apartment. Singh told police that when he drove
Sayers back, the suspect became verbally and physically abusive. He alleged that Sayers grabbed him by the neck, and strangled him for 5 to 10 seconds by squeezing his throat.
Singh told police he was unable to breathe as Sayers strangled him. The assailant also made comments about Singh’s turban and his nationality, according
to the charging documents. Singh managed to escape and fled on foot before calling 911. He left his car with Sayers still in it. Police located the suspect on the back porch of his apartment and booked him on assault charges. The following day, Sayers posted $13,000 in bail and was released. The suspect told police that he had taken a ride from Singh and discussed his ethnicity, but denied physically abusing him. Uber has implemented a number of safety features for drivers, including an emergency button, share trip feature, and 911 integration technology. The company has also launched “Ride Check,” to help make sure drivers and riders are OK in the event of a possible crash.
