Will Ensure 24-hour Water Supply in Delhi in Next 5 Years: Arvind Kejriwal New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday said the AAP government will ensure 24-hour water supply to the people in the national capital in the next five years, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted twice this week the issue of lack of clean drinking water.Kejriwal said that it would be clean water and people would be able to drink directly from their taps. He was speaking during an event at Kishangarh here to inaugurate the underground reservoir with a capacity of 18 lakh litres. “I have provided water in every household of Delhi in the last five years by laying pipelines. We have a plan for the next five years,” he said. The statement came after Prime Minister Narendra Modi attacked the AAP government over the issue. Earlier in the day, Modi said there is dissatisfaction among people in the national capital over “unclean” drinking water, which, he added is a worrisome issue. On Sunday, the PM had said the AAP government had ignored the national capital’s biggest problem which is lack of clean drinking water. Assembly elections are due early next year in the city, where the AAP, BJP and Congress are in a triangular fight.
Anti-CAA Protests Continue across Assam Amid Muted Christmas Celebrations
G

uwahati: Protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act continued across Assam on Wednesday amid muted Christmas celebrations, with leading personalities from the creative world decrying the contentious law. In Guwahati, a large number of artistes gathered at Latasil playground to raise their voice against CAA along with members of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU). Painters made anti-citizenship law musings, while renowned sculptor Biren Singha created a bust
of Dipanjal Das, who was killed during the ongoing protests. Poets and writers strongly criticised the BJP-led government at the Centre for “ignoring” the peoples’ voice, and urged Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal to press for the withdrawal of the act. AASU chief adviser Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharya said the participation of so many artistes added a new dimension to the agitation. Protests against the CAA were also witnessed at several places in Golaghat, Jorhat, Dibrugarh, Dhemaji and Sonitpur districts. Congress MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi held a 12-hour hunger strike at Teok

The protesters also demanded immediate release of peasant leader Akhil Gogoi and others arrested for their role in the anti-CAA agitation. Gogoi, who is in National Investigation Agency (NIA) custody, was arrested from Jorhat on December 12 in view of the deteriorating law and order situation in the state. Christmas celebrations were a low-key affair in Assam, as church priests said the situation in the state did not enliven the spirit to celebrate the occasion with mirth and gaiety. Meanwhile, peaceful protests continued across all the districts in the Brahmaputra Valley, which has been witness to violence and arson since December 9. Five persons have lost their lives during the agitation since December 11, the day when the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill was passed by Parliament.

Ex-Congress MP Tells Party Workers to Keep Petrol Ready to ‘Set Everything on Fire’ During Strike in Odisha The opposition Congress had called for a 12-hour shutdown in Nabarangpur on Thursday to protest police “inaction” in connection with the alleged gang rape and murder of a minor girl of the district on December 14.
Bhubaneswar: Senior Congress leader and former MP Pradip Majhi on Thursday courted controversy as he was caught on camera directing
party workers to “set afire everything immediately after getting directions” during the 12-hour strike called by the party in Nabarangpur district.
Majhis instructions to party workers during the strike called to protest police “inaction” in a minor rape and murder case at Nabarangpur was recorded in a video and was shown in local news channels. The opposition Congress had called for a 12-hour shutdown in Nabarangpur on Thursday to protest police “inaction” in connection with the alleged gang rape and murder of a minor girl of the district on December 14. “Keep petrol and diesel ready. The moment you get an instruction, set everything on fire. Well see what happens next,” Majhi was shown saying in the video while talking to someone over the phone. Majhi, however, said he has “no regret” over passing such an
FIR Registered Against IPS Officer for ‘Sexual Harassment’ of Teen at Her Birthday Party Mumbai: A case was registered by Navi Mumbai police on Thursday against an IPS officer for allegedly sexually harassing a 17-year-old girl at her birthday party six months ago. Taloja Police in the neighbouring city registered a First Information Report against Deputy Inspector General (Motor Transport) Nishikant More under IPC sections 354 (A) (sexual harassment) and 506 (criminal intimidation). More, who is posted in Pune, was also booked under relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, said a local police official. He is yet to be arrested. According to the complaint registered by the girl’s family, More and the girl’s fathers were friends. On June 5 this year, More
gatecrashed her birthday party. He also demanded liquor, the complaint said. When the cake was cut and her
friends and relatives smeared it on the girl’s face, More, who was standing next to her, allegedly scooped it up with his finger and licked it. He repeated this action several times, unmindful that he was touching her inappropriately, the complaint said. The entire incident was recorded on a mobile phone. When the girl’s father confronted More, he sought to downplay it. The girl’s family told reporters that since the incident, they were trying to get an FIR registered but the police shielded More. Based on eye-witness accounts and the video clip of the incident, the police registered a case on Thursday, said Deputy Commissioner of Police Ashok Dudhe. No arrest has been made yet, he said, adding that probe is underway.
instruction to party workers. “We have to adopt Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose policy when the government do not react over the rape and murder of innocent girls in this tribal-dominated district,” Majhi told reporters. He said “We can no more keep mum. First, a minor girl in Kundali was gang raped by jawans. Now, another minor girl was gang raped and murdered in Nabarangpur. This is too much.” Claiming that they have been forced to take the law into hands, the former lawmaker said: “Though 13 days have passed since rape and murder of the minor girl, the police has not been able to get post mortem report. What are the doctors, the Home department and the government doing?” Replying a question, Majhi said: “As Gandhian principles are not helping to ensure justice for these poor girls in Odisha, we are bound to adopt the ideals of Subash Chandra Bose.” “I have no regret whatever I said over the phone. If I have to adopt violence to keep my mothers and sisters safe, I will not step back,” the tribal Congress leader said. Shops were closed and most of the vehicles were off the road during the strike called by the Congress in Nabarangpur. Protestersset a car on fire during the strike at Ambedkar Chhak in the town. Nabarangpur BJD MP Ramesh Majhi criticised Majhis action and accused him of instigating violence. “Police are investigating the rape and murder case and post-mortem report will be available soon,” Ramesh Majhi said. BJP leader Jairam Pangi also condemned Pradip Majhis statement and accused the Congress leaders of instigating anarchy.

It is not right to say all Indians are Hindus
It is not right to say that all Indians are Hindus, said Union Minister Ramdas Athawale on Thursday, while reacting to RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat’s statement that ‘130 crore population of India is a Hindu society.’ “It is not right to say that all Indians are Hindus. There was a time when everyone was a Buddhist in our country. If Mohan Bhagwat means everyone is an Indian, then it is good. In our country, people are from Buddhist, Sikh, Hindu, Christian, Parsi, Jain, Lingayat faiths and different communities live here,” Athawale told.RSS chief Bhagwat on Wednesday said that India has traditionally been ‘Hindutvawadi’ and that the Sangh regards the 130 crore population of the country as ‘Hindu society’ irrespective of the diversity of religion and culture here.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had said that damage caused to public property during protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act would be recovered by confiscating the property of those who were involved in arson. He said that the accused will be identified on the basis of CCTV footage and videos pertaining to the incident.
The 50-year old farmer, P Sankar, inaugurated the temple last week at his farm in sleepy Erakudi village about 63 km from Tiruchirappalli and performs ‘aarti,’ every day
P
rime Minister Narendra Modi has an unsual fan in Tamil Nadu. One who was so impressed with his work that de decided to b uild a temple for him in his farm land. The temple also has framed pictures of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, current CM Edapadi Palanisamy and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The temple has come up at a village near Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu. The 50-year old farmer, P Sankar, inaugurated the temple last week at his farm in sleepy Erakudi village about 63 km from Tiruchirappalli and performs ‘aarti,’ every day. He says he was impressed and had benefitted by welfare schemes like the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi. It took about eight months to build the temple. A traditional ‘kolam’ (rangoli) welcomes people to the modest, 8 x 8 ft tiled roof temple, built at a cost of about Rs 1.2 lakh and a smiling bust of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is placed at the centre. While a traditional lamp is placed on both the sides of Modi’s bespectacled bust, it also features his trademark white beard and hairstyle. Complete with a tilak on the forehead, the bust sports the Prime Minister in a pink kurta and a blue shawl.
The statue has been adorned with garlands and flowers. “The work to build a temple for Ayya (a Tamil word equivalent to Sir in English and it refers here to PM Modi) began about eight months back. I could not complete it immediately due to constraints and the temple was inaugurated last week,” Sankar said. Asked what prompted him to build a temple and offer worship, he told PTI he had benefitted from Centre’s welfare measures and liked the Prime Minister for such initiatives. “I received Rs 2,000 (Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi) scheme for farmers, gas (Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana) and toilet (Individual Household Latrine Scheme) facilities,” he said. “I like him for his personality as well. I have been keenly watching him for long.”
Asked if Sankar was a party worker, BJP’s Tiruchirappalli Zonal in-charge and national council member La Kannnan said the farmer was not a member. “I sent our party office-bearers to meet him after I came to know about this temple for Modi ji. We have requested him to join the BJP and work for people’s welfare,” he told. Sankar said he has consented to become a member of the BJP since he “liked Ayya.” “Now my desire is to perform a proper Kumbabishekam (consecration) for the temple,” he said. Keen to see the Prime Minister in person, Sankar said he went to Mamallapuram near Chennai in October when Modi visited the seashore town for an informal summit with his Chinese President Xi Jinping. “I could not meet him. But I am happy to got a glimpse of his cavalcade from a distance,” he said. The farmer said he was self made man after struggling for years in a Gulf country to buy land in his village. The temple has portraits of deities, Mahatma Gandhi, noted freedom fighter and Congress icon K Kamaraj, AIADMK stalwarts MG Ramachandran and J Jayalalithaa, Home Minister Amit Shah and Tamil Nadu Chief Minsiter K Palaniswami.

U.S. READY TO DEAL WITH ANY NORTH
KOREAN ‘CHRISTMAS GIFT’: TRUMP
“We’ll find out what the surprise is and we’ll deal with it very successfully,” Trump told reporters at his Mar-a-Lago resort. “We’ll see what happens.” “Maybe it’s a nice present,” he quipped. “Maybe it’s a present where he sends me a beautiful vase as opposed to a missile test.”
PALM BEACH, Fla. - U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday brushed off North Korea’s warning of a “Christmas gift,” saying the United States would “deal with it very successfully,” amid U.S. concerns that Pyongyang might be preparing a long-range missile test. China, North Korea’s most important backer, meanwhile, urged Washington to take “concrete steps” as soon as possible to implement agreements reached during last year’s summit between Trump and North Korea leader Kim Jong Un in Singapore. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, in comments relayed on Twitter by the foreign ministry in Beijing, called on North Korea and the United States to work out “a feasible roadmap for establishing a permanent peace regime & realizing complete denuclearization on the (Korean) Peninsula.” North Korea warned this month of a possible “Christmas gift” for Washington after Kim gave the United States until the end of the year to propose new concessions in talks over his country’s nuclear arsenal and reducing tensions between the adversaries. “We’ll find out what the surprise is and we’ll deal with it very successfully,” Trump told reporters at his Mar-a-Lago resort. “We’ll see what happens.” “Maybe it’s a nice present,” he quipped. “Maybe
it’s a present where he sends me a beautiful vase as opposed to a missile test.” In issuing its warning, North Korea accused Washington of trying to drag out denuclearization talks ahead of Trump’s re-election bid next year and said it was “entirely up to the U.S. what Christmas gift it will select to get.” U.S. military commanders have said that the North Korean response could involve the testing of a longrange missile, something North Korea has suspended, along with nuclear bomb tests, since 2017. Trump has repeatedly held up the test suspensions as evidence that his policy of engaging with North Korea works. U.S. President Donald Trump speaks to the media

ICBM TEST IN 2017 North Korea’s last test of an intercontinental ballistic missile was in November 2017 when it fired a Hwasong-15, the largest missile it has ever tested. Pyongyang said the missile was capable of reaching all of the United States. Trump and Kim have met three times since 2018, but there has been no substantive progress. North Korea has demanded an end to international sanctions while the United States says Pyongyang must first commit to giving up its nuclear weapons.
At their unprecedented first summit in Singapore in 2018, the two sides agreed to work together to build a “lasting and stable peace regime” to replace the 1950-53 Korean War armistice, while North Korea committed “to work toward complete denuclearization of the Korean peninsula.” Recent days have seen a flurry of international diplomacy aimed at avoiding a return to the heated confrontation seen two years ago that raised fears of war. China and Russia, proposed last week that the U.N. Security Council lift some sanctions to break the current deadlock. A U.S. State Department official responded by saying it was not the time to consider doing this when North Korea was “threatening to conduct an escalated provocation, refusing to meet to discuss denuclearization, and continuing to maintain and advance its prohibited weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missile programs.” North Korea has conducted repeated tests of short-range missiles this year and this month carried out what appeared to be engine tests at a rocket-testing facility U.S. officials have said Kim promised Trump he would close. Pyongyang said the tests were aimed at “restraining and overpowering the nuclear threat of the U.S.”
CHRISTIAN MAGAZINE EDITOR QUITS IN ROW OVER TRUMP’S EVANGELICAL SUPPORT
A
n editor at the Christian Post announced Monday he was leaving the publication after it defended President Donald Trump. Napp Nazworth wrote on Twitter, “Announcement: Today, rather abruptly, I was forced to make the difficult choice to leave The Christian Post. They decided to publish an editorial that positions them on Team Trump. I can’t be an editor for a publication with that editorial voice.” He continued, “I’m saddened by what happened for many reasons. I’ve been with CP for over 8.5 years, made many friendships, and had
lots of exciting opportunities along the way.” Nazworth said that during his time at the Post, editors represented diversity within the publication and worked through disagreements, but now have “chosen to represent a narrow (and shrinking) slice of Christianity,” which is good for business but bad for Democracy. His exit comes at a time of disruption among Christian publications and thought leaders. Following Evangelical magazine Christianity Today’s viral editorial titled “Trump Should Be Removed From Office,” the late founder’s son tweeted on Friday that he’d be “disappointed” to know about it.

President Barack Obama Conservative at UN Climate Change Party Wins Landslide Victory in U.K. Elections
I
n the United Kingdom, Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his Conservative Party won a landslide victory during Thursday’s decisive national election, dealing a devastating blow to Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour Party. Corbyn has said he will step down as head of the party after a “period of reflection.” It was the Labour Party’s worst electoral defeat in 84 years. The Conservatives are projected to win 364 seats in the British House of Commons versus only 203 for the Labour Party. This would give the Conservatives the largest majority since 1987, when Margaret Thatcher was in power. This is Labour Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell.
The Conservative Party’s sweeping victory all but guarantees Brexit — Britain’s departure from the European Union — early next year. The party won resoundingly despite Prime Minister Boris Johnson being accused of
KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) Former U.S. President Barack Obama said Friday the Paris Agreement on climate change may fall short of expectations but is still the way forward to achieve progress and encourage businesses to invest in clean energy. Nearly 200 nations pledged to cut greenhouse emissions and help poor countries cope with the worst effects of an already warming planet under the accord signed in 2016 that was a cornerstone of Obama’s environmental legacy. But his successor, Donald Trump, abandoned that legacy when his administration notified the U.N. last month that the U.S. would pull out of the accord. Trump has said the agreement could impede growth and impinge on U.S. sovereignty. Speaking to young Asian leaders at a Kuala Lumpur conference hosted by his foundation, Obama said he knew the standards set by each country were insufficient but that the accord was practical and meant for the long haul. “I took satisfaction knowing that just by setting up the mechanism, we had created the ability to over time, turn up the standards, turn up the demands. Send a signal to businesses so that they started investing in more clean energy because they saw change coming,” he said in response to questions on the climate change crisis. Obama didn’t mention U.S. withdrawal from the accord. He
said there is no “silver bullet” to solve climate change but he remains optimistic that global warming can be slowed down. “It’s too late for us not to have some impacts. And so there’s gonna have to be some adaptation that’s going to take place. The oceans will be rising and that is going to displace people. And so we’re going to anticipate and care for some of the consequences of that, including large-scale migration and disruptions that are going to be very costly. But there is a big difference between the ocean rising three feet and rising six feet,” he said. He urged young people not to despair but to use their voices to raise awareness on the issue. “We take two steps forward. We take one step back ... but the trajectory has been positive. And the best we can then do is just do our work and try to advance it as best we can. Understanding that we will not finish the job,” he said. “Most of the time, the way the world’s gotten to where we are

entertainment Time for Bollywood to revive its romance with Kashmir: Advisor Khan
In a bid to promote Kashmir as a cherished tourist destination worldwide, advisor to Lieutenant Governor Farooq Khan urged the Bollywood to rekindle its decades’ old romance with Kashmir. The Advisor pitched this opinion last evening in Mumbai at
a function in connection with the presentation of 11th Mohammed Rafi awards. Advisor Khan who was the chief guest of the occasion that saw many Bollywood stars, producers, directors and singers, said that
Jammu and Kashmir is a place known not only for its hospitality but also for its serene and picturesque locations. “This is not a place of terrorism, but a paradise of tourism,” he said and added, “unfortunately a negative perception has been created about Kashmir to the outside world while the ground reality is entirely different.” He also extended an invitation to visit the place. “To see the reality on the ground, you will have to visit the place and I am sure you will find it as peaceful as any other part of the country,” he told the audience. He recalled how good the relationship was of the film industry with Kashmir in the eighties and early nineties, and such a connection was lost from
the past few years owing to various reasons. “It is the right time for reviving that age-old link between Bollywood and Kashmir,” he said. He appealed the film industry to explore the Union Territory with a new dynamism and renew the old connection that has been lost. He also urged the event organisers that the next edition of Mohammed Rafi Awards should be hosted in Jammu and Kashmir in order to promote the place as secure and safe for visitors. “It takes time to change people’s perception. What our government intends to do is to change it,” he said and added that Jammu and Kashmir is ideal for high-end tourism with varied areas and products for which the relevant infrastructure is continuously being upgraded.

Top 10 Bollywood movies of 2019 Before the curtains come down on Bollywood in 2019, here’s a look at films that shined
I
t wasn’t star-driven vehicles that held any steam in Bollywood in 2019, but good stories told gloriously that gained momentum. It’s also the year that saw actor Ayushmann Khurrana dominate and Priyanka Chopra’s blazing Bollywood comeback with her incredibly stirring family drama ‘The Sky Is Pink’. In terms of women, it wasn’t a particularly empowering one, but actors like Taapsee Pannu and Bhumi Pednekar continue to push their limits. As 2019 comes to a close, here’s a look back at the top ten films that shone bright ...
Article 15
-tabloid! rating 4 out of 5: Ayushmann Khurrana’s procedural crime thriller ‘Article 15’ is bold, bleak and bludgeons you with the indignity behind caste divides in India. Director Anubhav Sinha brings alive a tense tale of a scrupulous senior police officer Ayan Ranjan (Khurrana) investigating the murder of two teenagers in rural Uttar Pradesh. It’s a hate crime where rape is used as a weapon to control the lower-caste villagers and suppress them. Khurrana, who gives a wonderfully restrained performance as the anglophile cop Ayan, is achingly brilliant. At no point does ‘Article 15’ tell you what to think, it shows you instead. ‘Article 15’ sobers you up instantly. It isn’t an easy film to watch, but it would be a disservice if you don’t give this thriller a chance.
Uri: The Surgical Strike
- tabloid! rating 3.5 out of 5: Bollywood actor Vicky Kaushal, as a valiant Indian army officer, is infallible in the war drama ‘Uri: The Surgical Strike’. Displaying a blend of restraint and rage, Kaushal -- who won the National Award for this role — is in top form in a movie that dramatises a covert operation undertaken by the Indian army in September 2016. It’s an espionage thriller that could have easily been reduced to pulpy sloganeering and chest-thumping patriotism. Fortunately, it never goes down that exhausting route, presenting a refreshingly clinical approach in the way the men in uniform face their common enemy.
Gully Boy
-tabloid! rating 3.5 out of 5: There’s so much to love about director Zoya Akhtar’s ‘Gully Boy’, a rousing rap-to-riches underdog tale, led by Ranveer Singh. The outlandish actor known for his lookat-me persona seems to have found his groove as the angst-ridden rapper Murad who tries not to be weighed down by the grim reality around him. Every character leaves an
indelible impression. Alia Bhatt as Murad’s whacky girlfriend is a knock out. Actor Siddant Chaturvedi as Murad’s mentor was this year’s discovery.
Kabir Singh - tabloid! rating 3.5
out of 5: This was one of Bollywood’s most divisive and polarising films of 2019. The debate about whether the film celebrated a misogynistic hero continues till date, but there’s no denying its warped appeal. Shahid Kapoor breathed life into the bitter human pill Kabir Singh, an emotionally damaged and cocky man-child. But Kapoor makes the toxic title character devastatingly humane with his knockout performance as a high-functioning alcoholic and surgeon. This film is truly the survival of the despicable. Put a ring on ‘Kabir Sigh’ if you are in the mood for watching a love story that’s wonderfully wicked and warped.
Chhichore
-tabloid! rating 3.5 out of 5: This coming-of-age college drama graduates with flying colours. Usually, Bollywood films set in college campuses lean towards creating a shined-up and sanitised world populated with insanely rich kids (high-five director Karan Johar, high-priest of fashionable and flashy flicks). But Chhichhore isn’t one of them. The college buddy drama subverts those established tropes and gives us an authentic and heartwarming story. Director Nitesh Tiwari of Dangal fame goes down and dirty as he brings to life a bunch of goofball engineering students who graduate in life with honours. Actor Sushant Singh Rajput shines in his role as the gawky, unsure college student who grows up to be a doting father to a troubled teenage son. Varun Sharma, who plays Sexa (a nickname indicating his adoration for adult magazines), is a hoot, while Raj Thahir Bhasin as Derek, the brooding sporting champion, is spot on. The camaraderie between the young men as they discover love, life
and all thing in-between is enjoyable.
The Sky Is Pink -tabloid! rating 3.5 out of 5: ‘The Sky Is Pink’ starring Priyanka Chopra and Farhan Akhtar is a stirring and sincere tale of a loved-up couple grappling with their daughter (Zaira Wasim) born with a serious illness. It’s a touching drama that presses all those buttons — that of joy, sadness and finality — without any of those grand manipulative gestures that are usually employed in tear-jerkers dealing with a terminally ill teen. ‘The Sky is Pink’ is sobering yet upbeat. Its material is grim, but its treatment isn’t.
Saand Ki Aankh -tabloid! rating
3 out of 5: Everyone loves a good underdog tale and that adoration shoots up if it’s a story with women taking centre stage, Bollywood’s most marginalised. ‘Saand Ki Aankh’ (Bullseye) — the dramatised story of real-life champion sharpshooters Chandro Tomar and Prakashi Tomar who blossom in their 60s, played earnestly by Bhumi Pednekar and Taapsee Pannu — isn’t always bang on target, but it still manages to tear your defences down. The casting of younger women in older roles may jar, but if you can keep that reservation aside, this movie will pierce your heart.
Bala - tabloid! rating 3.5 out of 5:
‘Bala’ is a sweet-natured film that celebrates self-acceptance and loving oneself with warts and moles. One of my personal favourites moments in the film is a scene where Pari explains why she rates good looks as her top priority in a relationship. She isn’t vilified for wanting a dashing partner and that’s one of the nicest parts about ‘Bala’. There’s very little judgement, but plenty of commentary on the standards of beauty and India’s obsession with fair-skinned girls. While they don’t delve too deep, the makers do scratch the surface successfully. Khurrana is wonderfully flawed, yet you root for him as he learns to accept himself — baldness and all. And that’s the bald truth.
Dream Girl - tabloid! rating 3 out
of 5: 2019 saw small-town stories from India blossom in Bollywood. Ayushmann Khurrana endeared as a young man who’s hired at an adult call Centre for his unique ability to mimic a woman’s voice. The jokes land and the feel-good entertainer is elevated due to good collective acting on display. Here’s to Khurrana for mixing things up in 2019.
Mardaani 2 - tabloid! rating: 3 out
of 5 Actress Rani Mukerji is splendid as a super cop in this procedural thriller about a savage juvenile rapist on the loose. While Mukerji’s tough police woman act is a treat, it’s the cold-blooded villain that held more intrigue. TV actor Vishal Jethwa is lethal as the serial rapist with a violent, troubled past. Watching him spar and challenge the cops at every turn makes it an engaging watch. It’s clinical and procedural for most parts and there are no songs to fracture the disturbing narrative. The treatment is grave and you know that Shivani Roy will obliterate this underage sexual offender in no time, but it’s wicked to see her indulge in a catand-mouse game.

Anubhav Sinha calls on Muslim superstars to break silence over citizenship law, which has triggered deadly protests.
O
ne of Bollywood’s leading directors has called on three Muslim superstars to break their silence about a new citizenship law that has triggered riots in India, saying they could influence millions of fans. At least 25 people have died since crowds took to the streets, enraged by the Hindu nationalistled government’s legislation, which critics say discriminates against Muslims. “I am really angry at anyone who has not spoken out,” director Anubhav Sinha, a critic of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Hindu nationalist government, told Reuters news agency. “These three actors and their fan following is something else. One word from them can influence millions,” added Sinha, referring to Aamir Khan, Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan. Sinha directed Shah Rukh Khan in the 2011 film, Ra One. The violence and the political storm raging around the law poses a dilemma for a film
industry that is dominated by Muslim actors, directors and crew but caters for India’s broader, predominantly Hindu population. A handful of figures have spoken out against the law and the violence, some at rallies in Mumbai, the heart of Bollywood. But none of the three Khans has made a public statement. Sinha said it did not matter what they said about the law or the violence, but called on them to break their silence and join the debate. “I am not saying they should agree with me or others. Their opinion can be the opposite of what we have,” he said. Shah Rukh Khan has nearly 40 million Twitter followers, while Salman has more than 38 million and Aamir 25. None of the three Khans, who are not related, responded to Reuters’ requests for comment. Industry insiders say the lack of comment or condemnation by some of the
industry’s biggest names points to a broad cultural difference from Hollywood - where actors regularly take up political causes and criticise the government. Modi has regularly appeared alongside actors and film industry figures at public events. The industry has, in turn, produced films that some critics have said approached political endorsements. “In America, [President Donald] Trump cannot use the government machinery to go after actors who disagree with him, but here, that fear is very much there,” film critic and journalist Rajeev Masand told Reuters. Actress Sayani Gupta - who appeared with Shah Rukh Khan in his 2015 film, Fan - last week retweeted a selfie that popular young actors including Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt took with Modi at an event. A representative for Ranveer Singh said he was not available for comment while Bhatt’s spokeswoman did not immediately respond. For protesters, especially those at Jamia Millia University in New Delhi, where Shah Rukh Khan studied, his silence feels like a betrayal. “Someone like him staying silent is unacceptable,” said literature student Zoya Nadeem Azmi. Modi has regularly appeared alongside actors and film industry figures at public events. The industry has, in turn, produced films that some critics have said approached political endorsements.

Outsourced IT Workers Plan to Sue State Regents BY A STAFF WRITER SAN FRANCISCO, CA- About a dozen U.C. San Francisco tech workers have protested on their last day over the university’s decision to lay off 20 percent of its IT staff, and outsource their work to a company in India. Insider Financial reports that the 100 layoffs at UCSF Medical Center represented 20 percent of its IT staff and included 49 full-time employees, 30 contractors and 18 unfilled positions. University of California administrators said the university is under financial strain. It has a $5.4 billion annual budget and is planning to raise student tuition, but top executives in the IT department are in line for a substantial bonus, according to the report. Administrators said the cost-cutting move will save $30 million on a $50 million fiveyear contract with HCL, a multinational information tech firm headquartered in India. Workers first learned in July last year that they would be laid off in February. In the last several months, UCSF tech workers have trained their Indian replacements via video conference, according to the report. At least 13 employees plan to sue the university for outsourcing their jobs to a group of young men from India, claiming their eliminated jobs amounted to discrimination. Filing a lawsuit will mean no severance pay, according to the report. While outsourcing employees abroad isn’t illegal by itself, hiring a group of uniformly
young male workers from India runs contrary to a law forbidding bias based on national origin, gender, age, and race, the report noted. The university has denied violating any laws, according to the report. UCSF is a school focused on health care and research and is believed to be the first public university in the U.S. to outsource a large number of IT jobs. The layoffs have caught the attention of state and federal lawmakers, the report added. California Senator Dianne Feinstein last year said the university had a responsibility to keep jobs in the United States and pledged to seek reforms to stop domestic jobs being outsourced. In Sacramento, Democratic Assemblyman Kevin McCarty introduced a bill to ban universities from using contractors to move work out of the country. The proposal will not reverse the UCSF layoffs but will apply to other state universities hiring outside firms for work. Under the measure, contractors would be required to certify their workers are based in the U.S. Failure to do so would be deemed perjury and subject to criminal penalty, it said.

Indian American Lab Owner to Plead Guilty in Medicare Kickback Scheme
BY A STAFF WRITER PITTSBURGH, PA – A Pennsylvania business owner has agreed to plead guilty in a $127 million kickback scheme involving his genetic testing labs. Ravitej Reddy is scheduled to plead guilty to federal charges that he conspired with out-of-state marketing companies to pay kickbacks for lucrative lab tests at his two testing facilities, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported Dec. 10. A plea hearing is scheduled for Jan. 10. Reddy, owner of Personalized Genetics LLC in Pittsburgh and Med Health Services Management in Monroeville, was charged Nov. 26. The case involves two types of genetic testing, one that’s supposed to detect an elevated risk of cancer and another that’s supposed to help predict the effectiveness
of certain medications in particular patients. According to court documents, Reddy and his co-conspirators paid kickbacks to marketers who induced thousands of Medicare patients around the country to submit cheek swabs for genetic testing; paid kickbacks to a Georgia telemedicine company whose doctors wrote bogus prescriptions for the testing; and billed Medicare even though the samples had to be tested by outside labs because Reddy’s labs lacked the proper equipment. Prosecutors said that Reddy’s labs billed Medicare more than $127 million between May 2018 and April 2019, with reimbursements totaling about $60 million. U.S. Attorney Scott W. Brady has said Reddy and his “partners in crime” orchestrated a “sophisticated, nationwide kickback scheme.

FDA NEWS RELEASE WASHINGTON, DC- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today approved Ubrelvy (ubrogepant) tablets for the acute (immediate) treatment of migraine with or without aura (a sensory phenomenon or visual disturbance) in adults. Ubrelvy is not indicated for the preventive treatment of migraine. It is the first drug in the class of oral calcitonin gene-related peptide receptor antagonists approved for the acute treatment of migraine. “Migraine is an often disabling condition that affects an estimated 37 million people in the U.S.,” said Billy Dunn, M.D., acting director of the Office of Neuroscience in the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. “Ubrelvy represents an important new option for the acute treatment of migraine in adults, as it is the first drug in its class approved for this indication. The FDA is pleased to approve a novel treatment for patients suffering from migraine and will continue to work with stakeholders to promote the development of new safe and effective migraine therapies.” Migraine headache pain is often described as an intense throbbing or pulsating pain in one area of the head. Additional symptoms include nausea and/or vomiting and sensitivity to light and sound. Approximately one third of individuals who suffer from migraine also experience aura shortly before the migraine. An aura can appear as flashing lights, zig-zag lines, or a temporary loss of vision. Migraines can often be triggered by various factors including stress, hormone changes, bright or flashing lights, lack of food or sleep and diet. Migraine is three times more common in women than in men and affects more than 10% of people worldwide.
The effectiveness of Ubrelvy for the acute treatment of migraine was demonstrated in two randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials. In these studies, 1,439 adult patients with a history of migraine, with and without aura, received the approved doses of Ubrelvy to treat an ongoing migraine. In both studies, the percentages of patients achieving pain freedom two hours after treatment (defined as a reduction in headache severity from moderate or severe pain to no pain) and whose most bothersome migraine symptom (nausea, light sensitivity or sound sensitivity) stopped two hours after treatment were significantly greater among patients receiving Ubrelvy at all doses compared to those receiving placebo. Patients were allowed to take their usual acute treatment of migraine at least two hours after taking Ubrelvy. 23% of patients were taking a preventive medication for migraine. The most common side effects that patients in the clinical trials reported were nausea, tiredness and dry mouth. Ubrelvy is contraindicated for co-administration with strong CYP3A4 inhibitors. The FDA granted the approval of Ubrelvy to Allergan USA, Inc.

Senate Confirms Indian American Attorney as South Florida Federal Judge BY A STAFF WRITER FORT LAUDERDALE, FL. — Raag Singhal, an Indian American Broward County circuit court judge, was confirmed Dec. 19 by the U.S. Senate as South Florida’s newest federal judge. Singhal is a member of the Federalist Society, which advocates conservative legal theories and limited government, and before becoming a judge was active in the Broward Republican Party. Singhal, 56, has been an assistant state attorney and a criminal defense lawyer. In 2011, then-Gov. Rick Scott appointed him as a circuit court judge. In 2014, he won a full six-year term when no candidate came forward to run against him for the seat. Singhal, whose parents emigrated to the

U.S. CBP NEWS RELEASE TRENTON, NJ — Five public officials and former candidates, including the president of Jersey City’s school board, were charged with political corruption Dec. 19 in a sting that stirred echoes of a large-scale bust 10 years ago in the same corner of the state. New Jersey Attorney General Gurbir Grewal said in a statement that Jersey City School Board president Sudhan Thomas took thousands of dollars in bribes from a cooperating witness from May to July. He and four other defendants are charged with accepting bribes from a cooperating witness in the form of campaign contributions, according to the attorney general. In return, they promised the cooperating witness that they would vote or use their authority or influence to hire his law firm for lucrative government legal work, Grewal said. Thomas was in the news Dec. 18 after calling for the resignation of a school board member who had posted online questioning whether the attackers in the Dec. 10 shooting at a Jewish market might have had a point. Three people were killed in the market by two shooters authorities have said acted out of anti-Semitic hatred. The other defendants are Jason O’Donnell, a former state Assemblyman and one-time Bayonne mayoral candidate; John Cesaro, a Morris County freeholder; John Windish, a former Mount Arlington council member; and Mary Dougherty a one-time candidate for Morris County freeholder. Thomas disputed the charges and said he would fight them. He criticized the attorney general’s office for targeting him and said it came in response to his filing a lawsuit against the state.

community news Infosys to Settle B-1 Visa Violation Case in California 2
773.338.0222 MIDWEST / EASTCOAST
FRIDAY,27 DECEMBER, 2019
BY A STAFF WRITER PALO ALTO, CA -. On Dec. 17, the IT behemoth made an out-of-court settlement for $800,000 with the California state Attorney General on charges related to its alleged violation of B-1 visa rules. The charges include employing about 500 Infosys staff in California on B-1 visas rather than H-1B visas between 2006 and 2017. According to California Attorney General Xavier Becerra, the gross violation of federal laws resulted in Infosys avoiding the western state’s payroll taxes such as unemployment insurance, disability insurance and employment training taxes. “H-1B visas also require employers to pay workers at the local prevailing wage,” said Becerra. The former state prosecutor had alleged that the city-based outsourcing firm did not pay wages to its workers it placed in New York jobs and skipped paying the taxes owed on them. “The outsourcing firm has significant presence in the New York state, offering consulting and outsourcing services to several financial sector clients and other industries,”
recalled Schneiderman. “Infosys gave instructions to its employees on B-1 visas on how to deceive the U.S. consulate, customs and border protection officers. It also created a ‘dos and don’ts’ list for its techies to hoodwink the U.S. authorities and avoid talking about what they were doing,” Schneiderman pointed out. Similarly, six years ago, the U.S. Department of Justice in the Eastern District of Texas issued a statement on Oct. 30, 2013, that Infosys paid
a record $34 million to settle systemic visa fraud and immigration processes abuse. U.S. Attorney John Bales in the Department of Justice in Plano, Texas, said the Indian firm was cognizant of unlawfully deploying non-U.S. workers under the B-1 visa category to perform skilled labor, reserved for U.S. nationals or legitimate H1-B visa holders. “Infosys resorted to such unlawful actions to increase profits, minimize costs of securing visas, increase flexibility of employee movement, obtain an unfair advantage over competitors, and avoid tax liabilities,” Bales had alleged in a statement then. According to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, a B-1 visa is issued to temporary business visitors for participating in business activities of commercial or professional nature. The short-term visa offers 1-6 months of initial period of stay in the United States, which can be extended by another six months. All along, the company has been opting for settlement deals outside the law so as to avoid time, expense and distraction of protracted litigation on the charges levelled against it.
FDA Approves New Type of Therapy to Treat Advanced Urothelial Cancer FDA NEWS RELEASE WA S H I N G T O N , D C Drug Administration granted accelerated approval to Padcev (enfortumab vedotin-ejfv), a Nectin4-directed antibody and microtubule inhibitor conjugate, meaning the drug specifically targets cancer cells – in this case, the cell adhesion molecule Nectin-4, which is highly expressed in urothelial cancers. Padcev is indicated for the treatment of adult patients with locally advanced (when cancer has grown too large to be surgically removed) or metastatic (when cancer cells spread to other parts of the body) urothelial cancer who have previously received a programmed death receptor-1 (PD-1) or programmed death ligand 1 (PD-L1) inhibitor and a platinumcontaining chemotherapy. Platinum-containing chemotherapy, PD-1 and PD-L1 inhibitors are standard treatments for patients with bladder cancer, the sixth most common cancer in the U.S. Urothelial cancer, accounting for more than 90% of bladder cancers, begins in cells that line the bladder and nearby organs. Padcev represents a new type of therapy for patients with advanced urothelial cancer whose disease has progressed on chemotherapy and immunotherapy. “Antibody-drug conjugates are strategic tools in the targeted treatment of cancer. These conjugates combine the ability of monoclonal antibodies to target specific receptors on cancer cells and then deliver a drug to the cancer cell,” said Richard Pazdur, M.D., director of the FDA’s Oncology Center of Excellence and acting director of the Office of Oncologic Diseases in the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. “Padcev is an antibody-drug conjugate that targets Nectin-4, a cell surface protein expressed on bladder cancer cells and a cell-killing agent, monomethyl auristantin E.” Padcev was approved based on the results of a clinical trial that enrolled 125 patients with locally advanced or metastatic urothelial cancer who received prior treatment with a PD-1 or PD-L1 inhibitor and platinum-based chemotherapy. The overall response rate, reflecting the percentage of patients who had a certain amount of tumor shrinkage, was 44%, with 12% having a complete response and 32%
Jury Declines to award Multimillion-Dollar Judgment in Geo Bee Cheating Case
BY A STAFF WRITER CHICAGO, IL. — A federal jury Dec. 20 declined to award a multimillion-dollar judgment to an Indian American family accused by their Oak Brook school district of trying to cheat in a geography bee in 2016, ruling in favor of the school board on most counts. Barring an appeal, the verdict puts to bed years of costly litigation after the family accused a western suburban school district of trashing their reputation with accusations of cheating in a preliminary round of a national geography bee. The jury heard closing arguments in the lawsuit after five days of testimony over whether Butler School District 53 acted appropriately when it accused Komal Julka of fraudulently purchasing answers to a geography bee in which her two sons, then 9 and 11 years old, planned to compete in January of 2016. Komal Julka, her husband Dr. Rahul Julka, a DuPage County surgeon; and their two sons, now 13 and 15; asked the jury to award them nearly $13 million, arguing that they thought they were purchasing study materials for the geography bee. The school district, though, has maintained that Komal Julka knowingly registered as a “fraudulent” home school provider to purchase the geography bee questions from the company that administered the bee.

having a partial response. The median duration of response was 7.6 months. The most common side effects for patients taking Padcev were fatigue, peripheral neuropathy (nerve damage resulting in tingling or numbness), decreased appetite, rash, alopecia (hair loss), nausea, altered taste, diarrhea, dry eye, pruritis (itching) and dry skin. Patients may experience hyperglycemia (high blood sugar levels) regardless of whether they have diabetes or not, and blood sugar levels should be monitored closely in patients receiving Padcev. Patients should also be monitored for new or worsening peripheral neuropathy and have the dose of Padcev interrupted, reduced or discontinued if needed. Patients may experience eye disorders, including dry eyes and vision changes, while taking Padcev. Health care professionals may consider prophylactic artificial tears for dry eyes and referral to an ophthalmologist for any new symptoms related to the eye. Patients who experience infusion site extravasation (leakage of medications administered through veins into the surrounding tissue) may experience delayed extravasation site reactions with pain, blisters and peeling of skin. Adequate venous access should be ensured prior to starting Padcev. The FDA advises health care professionals to tell patients of reproductive age to use effective contraception during treatment with Padcev, and for a period of time thereafter. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not take Padcev
because it may cause harm to a developing fetus or newborn baby, or cause delivery complications. Padcev was granted Accelerated Approval, which enables the FDA to approve drugs for serious conditions to fill an unmet medical need based on a result that is reasonably likely to predict a clinical benefit to patients. A further clinical trial is required to verify and describe Padcev’s clinical benefit. The FDA granted this application Priority Review and Breakthrough Therapy designation, which expedites the development and review of drugs that are intended to treat a serious disease or condition and preliminary clinical evidence indicates that the drug may demonstrate substantial improvement over available therapies. Padcev received approval approximately three months before the goal date. The FDA granted the approval of Padcev to Astellas Pharma US Inc. The FDA, an agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, protects the public health by assuring the safety, effectiveness, and security of human and veterinary drugs, vaccines and other biological products for human use, and medical devices. The agency also is responsible for the safety and security of our nation’s food supply, cosmetics, dietary supplements, products that give off electronic radiation, and for regulating tobacco products.
Agents arrested who illegally entered the US on this Bayliner.
U.S. CBP NEWS RELEASE SAN DIEGO, CA —Working with U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s Air and Marine Operations (AMO), Joint Harbor Operations Center (JHOC), and U.S. Border Patrol (USBP) agents arrested nine people after they entered the U.S. illegally by boat on Thursday. On December 19, 2019, at around 3:45 p.m., JHOC contacted AMO about a suspicious vessel off the coast of San Diego, Calif. AMO quickly reached the area and intercepted a 24-foot Bayliner pleasure craft. Suspecting that the vessel was being used for smuggling, AMO agents took control of the vessel and navigated it to a dock at Ballast Point. USBP agents were contacted and responded to the dock. Border Patrol agents questioned the nine passengers and determined they were Mexican nationals illegally present in the U.S. Of those arrested, eight were adult men ranging from 20 to 62 in age and one 35-year-old woman. One of the men, was identified as the Bayliner’s captain. The group was transported to a nearby Border Patrol station for processing. The captain faces alien smuggling charges. The boat was seized by AMO. Since October 1, 2019, AMO agents across the country have been involved in the apprehension of 4,153 individuals through CBP and DHS components.
