Most people consider becoming vegetarian for their health
;
R
esearchers know that people are motivated to be vegetarian for different reasons— the most common in western cultures being health, the environment and animal rights. But how compelling are these different factors for nonvegetarians? University of California, Davis, researchers in the Department of Psychology surveyed 8,000 people of various ages and ethnicities, in two languages, in both the United States and Holland, to help determine why nonvegetarians decide to become vegetarian. A paradox for advocacy efforts The results showed that the main motivation for nonvegetarians to consider being vegetarian is health, with environmental and animal rights motives being less common. However, people who are most committed to a vegetarian diet were most motivated by the environment or animal rights.

After a call with President Trump, Florida’s governor belatedly issues a stay-at-home order

Lauderdale. Hospitals in Fort Myers and Naples begged for donations of masks and other protective equipment. Young people started to die.
And still, Gov. Ron DeSantis resisted. The man entrusted with keeping many of the country’s grandparents safe did not want to dictate that all Floridians had to stay at home. What it took for Mr. DeSantis to change his mind on Wednesday and finally issue a statewide order were a phone call with President Trump and a grave reckoning. A day earlier, the White House had projected how many American lives might be lost — up to 240,000 — without a national commitment to immediate, drastic action in every state. For Mr. DeSantis, a 41-year-old first-term Republican governor considered a contender for higher political office, relenting was an acknowledgment that the Florida economy, so reliant on tourism, would inevitably grind to a halt because of the virus. “People aren’t just going to go back to work” by April 15, Mr. DeSantis said at a news conference in Tallahassee, the state capital, calling the stringent social-distancing orders that take effect on Friday “a national pause button.”
Trump warns Iran against attacking US troops in Iraq

HiIndia Newsdesk President Trump has said that Tehran should expect a bold US response if Iran or Iranian-backed groups attack American forces or assets in Iraq. US-Iran tensions soared following the January 3 Washington-directed strike that killed Iranian Gen. Qassim Soleimani outside Baghdad airport. Trump said at an evening White House briefing that his administration has received intelligence that Iran is planning a strike, but did not provide additional details.

Trump urged to pause H1B visa programme after job loss amidst layoffs
HiIndia Newsdesk A US body representing American technology workers has urged President Donald Trump to suspend for this year the H-1B visa programme, the most sought-after among the Indian IT professionals, to protect their interests amidst the massive layoffs in the country due to the coronavirus pandemic. The H-1B visa is a non-immigrant visa that allows US companies to employ foreign workers in speciality occupations that require theoretical or technical expertise. Companies depend on it to hire thousands of employees each year from countries like India and China.
pandemic’s spread. “We’re thinking about doing that,” Trump told reporters at a White House briefing, a day after he warned the nation to brace for a “hell of a bad two weeks,” with 100,000 to 240,000 coronavirus deaths projected, even if current social distancing guidelines are maintained. Limited flights continue to run between cities like New York and Detroit, though passenger counts have plummeted across the nation. The Transportation Security Administration screened just 146,348 passengers Tuesday, down from 2,026,256 the same day last year.
HiIndia Newsdesk Washington [US], Apr 02 (ANI): The United States is going to have more ventilators than it needs so it will distribute ventilators to other countries, said President Donald Trump on Wednesday.
US toll tops 5,100 after deadliest day yet : Florida, 3 other states issue stay-at-home orders
HiIndia Newsdesk The U.S. recorded its deadliest day – more than 1,000 fatalities – since the coronavirus outbreak began, more than 215,000 overall infections have been reported, and public health officials may recommend that more Americans wear face masks to combat the pandemic that has brought the global economy to its knees. “Even if you do wear a mask, it can’t be at the expense of social distancing,” Surgeon General Jerome Adams said. He added that the higher-end N95 masks would not be necessary – and
could come at the expense of health care workers who need them. The current U.S. death toll appears to be a tiny fraction of what the nation faces over the next few weeks, public health officials say. Almost 2,000 have already died in New York state alone, prompting New York City to close its parks and open temporary hospitals in a convention center and iconic Central Park. The U.S. total was 5,119 late Wednesday. Worldwide, there are more than 47,000 deaths and more than 935,000 confirmed cases. More than 215,000 people in the U.S. have tested positive for the coronavirus as of Wednesday, doubling the number of cases from just five days ago. Health officials warn that the number of confirmed cases is expected to continue to rise in the coming days as private and public health labs ramp up testing across the nation. More than 1.1 million tests have been completed, Vice President Mike Pence said Tuesday evening.
“We will soon have more ventilators than we need. We’re building thousands, we will fairly soon be at a point where we have far more than we can use even after we stockpile for some future catastrophe, which we hope doesn’t happen,” Trump said at a White House briefing Wednesday. “We are going to be distributing them, the extras around the world. We go to Italy, France, Spain which is a very hard hit.” Earlier, Trump had invoked the Defense Production Act to mandate large companies to start building ventilators, thousands of which are needed in intensive care units across the country to treat patients with lungs affected by the coronavirus.
Hope Indian engineers succeed in making low-cost ventilator to fight COVID-19: US senior official HiIndia Newsdesk Washington [US]: The United States expressed hope that Indian engineers will succeed in making a low-cost ventilator which is a potential gamechanger for coronavirus which has claimed over 46,000 lives worldwide. “We are cheering on these Indian engineers as they race to build a low-cost ventilator -- a potential game-changer for #COVID19. W/ support from @ MIT engineers & production advice from a US-based company, we hope this invention succeeds & can eventually be produced at scale,” State SCA said in a tweet attributed to Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary (PDAS) Alice Wells. As the coronavirus crisis accelerates, the shortages of ventilators are a cause of concerns around the world. The World Health Organization declared the COVID-19 outbreak a pandemic on March 11. To date, more than 921,000 people have been infected with the coronavirus worldwide.

Testing, tracing main focus: PM HiIndia Newsdesk Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday asked chief ministers to formulate a common exit strategy to ensure staggered re-emergence of the population once the 21-day lockdown ends. The prime minister, who asked chief ministers to send across suggestions on how to exit the lockdown, stressed on the importance of social distancing. India has “achieved some success” in limiting the spread of Covid-19, the prime minister told chief ministers at a conference with chief ministers via video conference. This was Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s second video conference with chief ministers on tackling the huge challenge posed by the coronavirus disease. The first was on March 20. PM Modi, who heard the chief ministers praise the Centre for the nationwide lockdown ordered nearly 10 days ago, said the country’s common goal is to ensure minimum loss of life. “In the next few weeks, testing, tracing, isolation and quarantine should remain

the areas of focus,” he said, emphasising on the necessity of maintaining supply of essential medical products, availability of raw material for manufacture of medicines and medical equipment. PM Modi and other central government functionaries also stressed on enforcing the lockdown, helping the poor cope with food and contact tracing of people known to have been infected with the deadly virus, particularly in context of the Tablighi Jamaat participants. Home Minister Amit Shah talked about the need to implement lockdown more strictly in some states and the importance of effective district level implementation of the guidelines issued by the Centre. Union Health Secretary Preeti Sudan updated the chief ministers of the rise in number of cases in India. She also outlined the spread of cases from Nizamuddin Markaz and the Centre’s preparations to tackle medical cases arising out of further spread of the virus and need to break transmission chain in the districts with high number of confirmed cases.
COVID-19 a reminder of interconnected Cabinet secretary tells states to trace world, need for global response: PM Modi Jamaat attendees on ‘war footing’
HiIndia Newsdesk The COVID-19 pandemic is a “reminder to us of the interconnected nature of our world today and the need therefore to adopt a truly global response to it”, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in a
message to Chinese Premier Li Keqiang on Wednesday. Modi said that he looks forward to working with Li to “further deepen and strengthen our closer developmental partnership and take it to even greater heights in the years to come”. This was part of the Indian leadership’s message to the Chinese leadership, as both sides exchanged messages of felicitation between the Presidents, Prime Ministers and External Affairs Ministers on the occasion of the 70th Anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between India and China on April 1.

He also heads a team that runs the National Teleconsultation Centre, connecting doctors across the country in real time for treatment of COVID-19 patients. Globally, what surprised me is how some countries took the pandemic lightly — in terms of lockdown, stopping international travel, how they thought that for some reason they were immune, that the virus would not travel there. These countries had time to be more active, once they realised what was happening in China. (At home), what surprised me was the response to the Prime Minister’s appeal

It is a citizens’ movement and if we have to win the
battle against COVID-19, it has to be won at a community level rather than at the hospital level. Hospitals will look after sick patients; it is community involvement that will actually stop
the pandemic. A lot of people argue that we need to keep testing. But there should be some reason behind it. The initial question was to see: are there cases coming from outside? And that’s why there was quarantine and testing that was being done of those with travel history or contact history. In the current scenario, with the lockdown, the aim is to see if we can prevent the spread and to identify those areas where there are large number of cases. Testing has to go hand in hand while answering these questions. Also, you must remember that in our country we have very good surveillance data, which is the IDSP data, which is looking from a PHC level or ASHA worker level and upwards. It is mapping anyone who has flu-like symptoms or any individual who is admitted with severe respiratory illness. This give us a rough idea, in any area, if there is a cluster developing.

PM Modi boosting India’s spirit 8,000 tests in last 24 hours to fight COVID-19, say experts
HiIndia Newsdesk Oberhausen [Germany]/Glasgow [UK], April 3 (ANI): As the world is fighting COVID-19 pandemic, the initiatives taken by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to keep the country from slipping into despondency are being praised by western experts. In a video message, PM Modi today urged people across India to switch off their lights and hold candles, lamps and flashlights at 9 pm on Sunday, April 5, for 9 minutes in a nationwide show of solidarity, to fight the darkness of
coronavirus. Comparing the situation with other countries experts said the leadership of most nations is running out of ideas on how to keep hope alive as nations like the U.S. sink deeper into trouble. While lighting a candle will not deal with the COVID-19 challenge, it will keep India focused on the initiatives being undertaken by its leadership, say experts.Claudia Wadlich Heidelberg, a German expert on South Asian affairs told ANI, “It is an effective measure to reach out to all people in the vast sub-continent, to strengthen their sense of responsibility and sense of community and to honour those who work tirelessly against the virus”.She added, “In our comparatively small countries in Europe, we encourage each other. In Italy, people stand on their balconies at a certain time and applaud the doctors and nurses. Such campaigns were also sporadic in Germany. And the church bells ring here at 7 pm. Surprisingly, all Germans are united in the hope that they will soon be able to overcome the virus”.

‘Get real’: Opposition slams PM Modi’s appeal for lighting candles on April 5, calls it ‘symbolism’
HiIndia Newsdesk Hours after Prime Minister Narendra Modi asked people to light candles on Sunday at 9 pm, leaders from opposition
parties hit out at him calling his video message a mere “symbolism” and asked if he has any concrete relief measures or vision of the future. In a new appeal to the countrymen, Modi on Friday asked people to switch off the lights in their houses for nine minutes at 9 pm on Sunday, April 5, and light lamps at their doors or balconies. “You are not alone, no one is alone in the fight against coronavirus. The light from the lamps will show that we are together in this battle,” he said.
India rose to 2301, including 56 deaths and 156 of those who have recovered. Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu are the worst affected states with 423 and 309 cases, respectively. PM Narendra Modi, earlier in the morning, addressed the nation and thanked the people for cooperating with the 21-day lockdown. In a new appeal to the countrymen, PM Modi asked people to put off the lights in their houses for nine minutes at 9 pm on Sunday, April 5, and light lamps at their doors or balconies. As India enters the 10th day of lockdown, the government is considering options as to how to lift the lockdown on April 14.
Former finance minister P Chidambaram, in a series of tweets, called for steps to boost growth and said: “serious thought to ideas and measures” was as important as symbolism. “Every working man and woman, from business person to daily wage earner, also expected you to announce steps to arrest the economic slide and restart the engines of economic growth. The people are disappointed on both counts,” he tweeted.

Authorities have detected about 647 confirmed cases of the infection caused by the Sars-Cov-2 virus that can be linked to a religious gathering in Delhi’s Nizamuddin, which has emerged as a hot spot of the disease in India. The March congregation of Islamic missionary group Tablighi Jamaat at its headquarters has set the alarm bells ringing, with authorities in states launching hectic efforts to trace the footsteps of those who visited Nizamuddin
‘Inhuman’: Shiv Sena slams Nizamuddin ‘Wrong to blame religious minorities gathering in times of coronavirus over origin of COVID-19’: US to govts
HiIndia Newsdesk
The Shiv Sena has criticized the Nizamuddin congregation of the Tablighi Jamaat members held in violation of the restrictions imposed on mass gatherings in view of the threat of Covid-19 community transmissions. The party which rules Maharasthra in coalition with the Congress and NCP, on Friday described the congregation, which has become a major source of infections across the country as “inhuman” act and added that no religious or national purpose was solved by holding of such an event, said. “What religious and national service have these people done by such a congregation in the name of Islam. In fact, it is inhuman and great disservice,” an excerpt quoted by the agency from editorial in party mouthpiece Saamana said.
The United States has said it is wrong to pin blame on religious minorities for the spread of coronavirus, asserting that the “blame game” over the origin of the Covid-19 should be aggressively pushed back by governments across the world. US Ambassador at L arge for International Religious Freedom Sam Brownback Thursday, as quoted said, “They (governments) should go out there in open messaging and say no, this is not what happened. We know where this virus originated. We know it’s a pandemic the whole world is being
subjected to and it’s not something from religious minorities. But unfortunately, we are seeing the sort of blame game getting started up in different places around the world, and we hope it gets pushed back aggressively by those host governments.” Brownback’s remarks came after a congregation of Tablighi Jamaat in New Delhi’s Nizamuddin area emerged as one of the biggest hotspots of the coronavirus outbreak in the country. He urged religious groups to practice social distancing and sought the release of peaceful religious prisoners across the world, particularly in countries like Iran and China. During a conference call on COVID-19 impact on religious minorities, when asked if he had any specific conversations with the Indian officials about the trending of #CoronaJihad, Brownback denied having spoken to any official in the country. we do that ourselves in the US, and I have had that happen in my state when I was governor of Kansas,”

window to hold IPL
HiIndia Newsdesk Chances of staging the Indian Premier League this year seem remote but the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is considering the AugustSeptember window in case the country recovers from the deadly COVID-19 outbreak in time. The BCCI had postponed the IPL to April 15 in the wake of the outbreak but with more positive cases being reported
every passing day, chances of holding the tournament in April seem bleak. The B C CI, as p ar t of its contingency plans, has kept open the option of rescheduling the IPL any time between late August and early October (before the T20 World Cup in Australia). This of course hinges on the hope the disease will be contained in the next four months. Depending on how it plays out, a plan will be redrawn. The IPL organising team will be looking at all the possibilities, f rom the par ticipation of foreign players to a truncated tournament with only India players.

Shaktimaan set to make a comeback on Doordarshan
Ghostbusters, Morbius postponed to 2021 due to coronavirus
In a statement, the Information and Broadcasting Ministry said Doordarshan will be retelecasting five shows - Chanakya, Upanishad Ganga, Shaktimaan, Shriman Shrimati and Krishna Kali.
Jason Reitman’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife and the Marvel movie Morbius postponed to 2021. Earlier, the films were supposed to release on July 10 and July 31 this year, respectively.
Ramayan will be retelecast after 33 years. How do you feel about this development?
Not just Ramayan, Doordarshan brings back these iconic TV shows as well Minister of Information & Broadcasting Prakash Javadekar’s tweet announcing the return of Ramanand Sagar’s epic TV show Ramayana on Doordarshan left many excited. A few hours later, the official Twitter handle of Doordarshan announced the comeback of a few other popular shows as well.
I won’t say I am very excited about it because I am not sure how it will feel to see myself again on TV. I was younger and prettier, so I guess it should be a nice feeling. Ramayan is from simpler times. I don’t know how much of it people will understand or if they will have the patience for it. Of course, there is a section of the audience which lives by Ramayan. But then there is another section of people who don’t even care to read books anymore. They are just watching things on the internet and googling in this fast-paced world. I am not sure how many people will watch it and imbibe the values of Ramayan. In a way, I am happy that the government has given people a chance to watch it if
they want. It is like taking the horse to the water, but it is really up to you to the horse to drink it.
But during the lockdown things have been slow, people at home have time on their hand. We might emerge as different people when we finally get out. I have been telling my husband and daughters that whatever the situation be, we have to pick up something and learn something out of it. This is a calling for each one of us that we need to reboot and do things differently. We all were just running around, mindlessly attending parties and functions and being stuck to day-to-day work. We did not really get time for any kind of introspection. So, somewhere I feel this was nature’s way to tell us that we need to be mindful. We need to slow down our pace and take care of our inner selves.
Web Series Arjan Bajwa eager to play
When Lisa Ray thought Bani J was ‘so shy’
Actress Lisa Ray says she thought Bani J was a shy person at the start of their shoot for a web series that casts them as a lesbian couple. “I joined the show after some back and forth due to personal commitments. During our first reading together was when I met my co-star Bani,” Lisa said. “I went in and sat next to her, and she was like talking in this whisper and then looked at me and I was like, ‘wow, this is a problem!’ How are we going to do this? She was so shy,” she added. The two actresses appear in the series “Four More Shots Please!”. Bani, of course, has her line of defence. “I was just trying not to spook her so she wouldn’t leave,” she explains, on her guarded behaviour with Lisa during that first reading session.
Air Force pilot on screen
Arjan Bajwa says after playing Colonel Sunil Sheoran in his digital debut, “State Of Siege: 26/11”, he now wishes to play an Air Force pilot on screen. On his parameter of choosing scripts, the actor said: “This is the kind of roles I would like to play -- one that potentially creates impact. I think ‘State of Siege’ has already set the bar. Having said that, I am so eager to play an Air Force pilot in a film. That is what I am dying to play! I fly as a hobby pilot and aviation is my first love.” Created by Abhimanyu Singh and directed by Matthew Leutwyler, the story of the show is based on Sandeep Unnithan’s book “Black Tornado: The

Three Sieges Of Mumbai 26/11”. The show also features Mukul Dev, Arjun Bijlani, Vivek Dahiya, Sid Makkar, Tara Alisha Berry, Khalida Jaan, Jyoti Gauba, Roshni Sahota, Suzanne Bernert, Naren Kumar and Jason Shah. Arjan went through an extensive process to get the look and the feel of Colonel Sheoran right. On the show, his protagonist is a commando of National Security Guard (NSG). According to him several conversations with Col Sandeep Sen, who was the second command of Colonel Sunil Sheoran during the 26/11 Mumbai attack, helped him to get depth and understanding of the character.

Tech firm Bloom Energy fixes broken US ventilators A Californian company that usually makes greenenergy fuel cells is due to deliver 170 repaired ventilators to Los Angeles later on Monday after transforming its manufacturing process. California’s governor announced Bloom Energy’s success at its Sunnyvale, California campus
A
n engineer at Bloom Energy downloaded the service manual and taught himself how to dismantle and rebuild them in a day, the Los Angeles Times reported. They had been in storage since the H5N1 bird flu outbreak of the mid-2000s. Bloom says it is now working to find other stockpiles of disused machines. On Saturday, as California Governor Gavin Newsom visited the manufacturing plant, he said: “We got a car and a truck and had [them] brought here to this facility at 08:00 this morning. “And Monday, they’ll have those ventilators back into Los Angeles all fixed. That’s the spirit of California.” Mr Newsom said the the original manufacturers had
initially told him it would take a month to fix 200 ventilators, which help patients breathe if they are having difficulties due to Covid-19 or other diseases. He said he told Bloom: “We challenge you to do more and do better.” Mr Sridhar told CNBC: “We think we can do hundreds of ventilators - close to 1,000 ventilators - a week of refurbishment. “This is the fastest way - we can take existing ventilators that are out there, get them working, get them back to the hospitals.” The strategy contrasts with that of the UK, which is seeking to make thousands of new machines in partnership with manufacturing companies. The UK has about 8,000 ventilators available and has placed orders for the same number again from existing manufacturers

Clean Weather Technologies, an incubatee company in Pune’s Scitech Park has developed a new technology to disinfect closed spaces and rooms. The technology, named Scitech Airon, was developed under the Nidhi Prayas program initiated by the Department of Science and Technology (DST). It reduces the viral load of a closed space by 99.7 per cent within an hour, depending on the room size. The machine can be used to disinfect spaces which have been occupied by coronavirus patients ensuring that the doctors, nurses and other care staff in quarantine facilities do not catch the virus. The technology also increases the body’s resistance to external factors for 20-30 days. he Airon has been tested by several international labs in closed spaces like houses, hospitals, schools, farms, industries etc. It is capable of killing a range of viruses, bacteria and fungal infections and can disinfect a room from several allergens. It also decomposes pollutants like Carbon Monoxide, Nitrogen Dioxide and volatile gaseous organic compounds.

HEALTH
Tone your arms at home with these 6 funtastic triceps exercises for beginners Getting your upper arms in shape is difficult but not impossible, especially when you have these six triceps tamer exercises to help you out. 4. Triceps kick-backs 1. Triceps dips
You don’t need any equipment when it comes to triceps dips. You can do it using a bench, chair, stair, table, or just about anything which is flat. The trick to make this move worth it is to keep your legs a little farther apart and when you come up, hold the stance for two to three seconds. Dip deep and while lifting up try to lock your elbow joints for better movement.
2. Close-grip push-ups
Push-ups are a great upper body workout and if you are not in love with the way your arms look then close grip push-ups are the way to go. Also, it’s a great way to flex and warm your triceps. Doing them slowly is the key here.
3. Hand release push-ups
An advanced version of close-grip push-ups, hereafter completing your push-up you need to lie on your stomach and lift your hands up from the ground. So, it’s a contraction and relaxation technique that works in hand release exercise.
Can COVID-19 Damage Your Heart? Here’s What We Know
COVID-19, the disease caused by the new coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, has sickened hundreds of thousands and continues to kill large numbers of people worldwide. Primarily considered life threatening for its effects on the lungs, a new studyTrusted Source published this month in JAMA Cardiology finds COVID-19 can also cause heart injury, even in people without underlying heart issues. “We know that the cardiac injury risk is there, no matter if you had prior heart disease or not. So prior heart disease is a risk factor for higher mortality in these patients. Cardiac injury also is a risk factor, but this can happen to people who are free of heart disease,” Dr. Mohammad Madjid, MS, the study’s lead author and an assistant professor of cardiology at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth, told Healthline. Typically considered a threat to the lungs, COVID-19 also presents a significant threat to heart health, according to recently published research. Although people with existing heart disease have a greater risk, a small percent of patients with no preexisting heart issues also experienced heart damage from COVID-19. Experts say it’s important for those with cardiovascular disease to be isolated from people with COVID-19 symptoms and to remain current with vaccinations for influenza and pneumonia.
You can do two variations with dumb-bells: with one hand at a time or using both hands simultaneously. The other important thing that you need to remember is the angle. Your body should be tilted at an angle of 45 degrees and your elbows should move at an angle of 90 degrees.
5. Triceps extension
If your arm bulges are bothering you, then give this tricep extension a try. Try both its variants–standing up and lying down – for better results. And if you are having a hard time doing it with dumb-bells, then use a resistance band.
6. Triceps horizontal press with a resistance band
The trick with triceps muscle is that the more you pull, the more benefits you will get. So, toning with a resistance band is a great way to develop this muscle.
A word of caution
Don’t do all these exercises in one session. Mix and match and keep swapping them for better results. You can choose any four or five exercises for one triceps session.

Watching too much news on covid-19 can take a toll on your mental health
A
lot of people have been reporting that they feel anxious and stressed. And psychologists are saying that consuming too much news on coronavirus is creating a sense of panic among the people and that’s why anxiety is hitting them. At a time when over 1.3 billion Indians have been asked to stay indoors, people who are claustrophobic or suffer from obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) are finding it difficult to obey the ‘Lakshmana Rekha’ Prime Minister Narendra Modi has drawn in front of all homes. According to health experts, such people should first unplug themselves from the news around new coronavirus (COVID-19) and divert their minds
towards constructive thoughts and engage in indoor games. “People with OCD and those who are claustrophobic need to try and avoid reading or seeing too much negative news. Instead, they can opt for completing the work pending for some time which is a constructive channelization of the energy,” said Dr Sameer Malhotra, Director, Department of Mental Health and Behavioural Sciences, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Saket. Concurrently, it is important to ensure that one engages in maintaining a work-life balance, take care of certain lifestylerelated elements such as the sleep-wake cycle and also engage in activities of interest during this period.

‘WhatsApp messages can be traced easily’ The issue can be resolved without diluting end-toend encryption and affecting privacy, says expert IANS, NEW DELHI
W
ith India pressing for traceability of WhatsApp messages to check the spread of fake news, a member of the National Security Advisory Board (NSAB) has stressed that the issue can be easily resolved without diluting end-to-end encryption and affecting the privacy of users. “If WhatsApp says it is not technically possible to show the originator of the message, I can show that it is possible,” said V. Kamakoti, while delivering a lec-
ture at Indian Council of World Affairs here on Wednesday. The National Security Advisory Board advises the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) on security matters. “When a message is sent from WhatsApp, the identity of the originator can also be revealed along with the message. So the message and the identity of the creator can be seen only by the recipient. When that recipient forwards the message, his/her identity can be revealed to the next recipient,” said Kamakoti, a professor at Indian Institute of Technology-Madras. The NSAB member added that
as per court ruling, those who forward a harmful message can also be held responsible in certain cases. “In this way, you do not need to break end-to-end encryption and infringe the privacy of anyone and yet make the messages traceable when the investigating agencies want to find out. And this is what we have projected to WhatsApp,” he said. India started pressing for traceability of WhatsApp messages after several lynching cases last year were linked to rumors spread on the messaging service. WhatsApp has maintained that

Judge Rules USCIS Memo for H-1B Workers at Third-Party Sites Unlawful- Lawsuit by Group of Indian Workers
BY A STAFF WRITER WASHINGTON, DC- The District Court for the DC Court of Columbia ruled March 10 that a 2018 USCIS memo used to evaluate the work of H-1B employees at third party sites was unlawful because it had not gone through proper rule-making procedure before implementation. Judge Rosemary Collyer ruled on a lawsuit brought on by IT Serve Alliance, an adhoc organization representing Indian H-1B workers. The lawsuit questioned the validity of a February 2018 USCIS memo which sought to expand the scope of a 2010 missive known as the Neufeld memo. ITServe Alliance stated in its suit that the memo had not gone through the proper rulemaking procedures — which normally include a 30 or 60 public comment period — before it was implemented. Collyer has given USCIS 60 days by which it must act on all outstanding petitions. “Rather than implementing the rule of the law, USCIS has been resorting to random rulemaking through internal memos. This judgment in favor of ITServe Alliance puts an end to this. It’s checkmate!” said ITServe Alliance in a tweet after Collyer’s ruling was issued.
In a blog post, the organization alleged that USCIS had adopted an “erratic H-1B adjudication pattern” which it had been challenging since the Neufeld memo was issued. The Neufeld memo stated that the employer-employee relationship at third party sites was often vague and in violation of the rules for H-1B workers. The 2018 memo expanded the Neufeld memo, stating that the petitioner had to prove that the H-1B worker would be working in a specialty occupation at the third party site,
in specific assignments for the entire length of his employment at the third party site, an “itinerary” of sorts. The 2018 memo stated that the petitioner had to provide corroborating evidence that the H-1B worker would be occupied in a specialty occupation throughout his tenure at the third party work-site. Such proof could include: evidence of actual work assignments, copies of detailed statements of work or work orders signed by an authorized official at the end-client company where the work would actually be
Indian American Congressional Candidate Tests Positive for Coronavirus, Recovers After Self-quarantine BY A STAFF WRITER NEW YORK, NY- Suraj Patel, an Indian American former Barack Obama campaign staffer who is challenging incumbent Carolyn Maloney for a Congressional seat in New York’s 12th District, announced March 30 that he has tested positive for the coronavirus. Patel made the announcement in a Medium post in the “interest of transparency and accountability.” Patel said in his statement that about 10 days ago, he began experiencing a tightness in his chest and difficulty breathing followed by a regular fever of 102 degrees. “I live with two doctors whose ability to return to work was dependent on our household remaining COVID-free. Therefore, we had to test to verify our condition so they would not miss work. My housemates and I all tested positive for COVID-19 and have been in self-quarantine since then and have recovered,” he said. Patel, who served on Obama for America’s advance team for four-plus months leading up to the 2008 November election, said his older brother, an emergency room doctor, administered the COVID-19 test at their home.

In addition to his time on the Obama for America advance staff, he served as deputy director for the Office of Public Outreach for the 2012 Democratic National Convention; a special assistant to the chief of staff for the Presidential Inaugural Committee from December 2012 through February 2013; and as an advance associate and national advance team member for the White House from June 2008 through November 2016, according to his bio. “Congress and the President must act in the best interest of our heroes: our front
line workers. Healthcare professionals, first responders, transit workers, grocery store employees, pharmacists, government personnel, members of the media, members of the military, and all who can not work from home would be tested regularly, even when not presenting symptoms. If not for our heroes, then for our seniors; the keepers of humanity’s collective wisdom. They do not have the ability to fight this disease on their own, and for their sake, we must fight for them.” Patel said in his statement.

The petitioner would also be required to submit a detailed description of who will supervise the H-1B worker and the scope of the worker’s duties, along with related evidence. “If the petitioner does not submit corroborating evidence or otherwise demonstrate that there is a specific work assignment for the H-1B beneficiary, USCIS may deny the petition,” stated the 2018 memo. Around the same time, the Trump administration greatly narrowed what classified as a specialty occupation. ITServe Alliance said after Collyer’s ruling in the organization’s favor that employers of H-1B workers who would be placed offsite no longer had to provide an itinerary for their work. USCIS must now also state its rationale for denying a petition or for issuing only a short-term approval, explained ITServe Alliance of Collyer’s decision. “Our fight to force USCIS to implement the rule of the law is not over. We want to continue our effort and build on this. We have momentum on our side,” stated the organization.

media outlet. The woman was taken to the hospital, where she is being treated for injuries not considered life-threatening, according to the report. According to investigators, who are still looking into the incident, Agrawal’s wounds appear to be self-inflicted, the report said. Authorities believe Agrawal may be suffering from mental illness and will determine if she is mentally competent to understand her charges and face trial should it come to that. Very few details about the family are available from community members at this time.
NJ Gov. Phill Murphy
BY A STAFF WRITER NEW JERSEY, NJ — People across the state continue to violate Governor Phil Murphy’s stay-at-home order during the novel-coronavirus outbreak. Authorities have broken up gatherings, been spat on and even broken up an incident involving a Molotov cocktail, according to the Office of Attorney General. The OAG listed several alleged incidents Sunday. “Our police officers are going above and beyond the call of duty during this health crisis,” said Attorney General Gurbir S. Grewel in a statement. “Unfortunately, they are being called upon far too often to deal with people violating the orders put in place to protect us all— or what is more egregious, people falsely using the coronavirus to spread fear or impede officers in their vital work.” Governor Phil Murphy warned the public Saturday against holding “corona parties” during the outbreak. “We will crash your party,” Murphy tweeted. “You will pay a big fine. And we will name & shame you until EVERYONE gets this message into their heads.

Indian-American infected with COVID-19 in need of plasma from survivor
BY A STAFF WRITER HOUSTON, TX-Rohan Bavadekar, a 42-year-old from Houston, is fighting for his life on a ventilator in St. Luke’s hospital in the state of Texas after being diagnosed with COVID 19. At home, his wife Manasi and three young children, who wait for Rohan’s return have also contracted the virus. Hoping for a miracle and supporting the Bavadekar family at these testing times is SEWA- an Indian American Hindu faith group based in Texas that is lending a helping hand. “Sewa is providing non-medical service and support to Rohan’s family by providing prepared food, groceries, medicines and emotional support,” Gitesh Desai - President, Sewa Houston Chapter, told ANI. The Herculean task for Manasi and everyone helping Rohan is trying to find someone who has recovered from COVID-19. The Food and Drug Administration is
Rohan Bavadekar allowing doctors in the United States to use plasma, the yellow fluid in which blood cells are suspended, to treat very ill COVID-19 patients. Rohan’s doctors plan to use plasma from survivors, also known as convalescentplasma therapy. People who have recovered from the disease have antibodies that might help those still suffering from it. Dating back to the late 19th century, doctors have transfused the blood of recovered patients into those still sick with the 1918 flu, measles, polio,
chickenpox, SARS, and Ebola--to varying degrees of success. And are hopeful that many like Rohan can be saved. Rohan’s family, friends and charity organizations like SEWA are reaching out on social media looking for potential donors who they will then connect with hospitals. Each one hoping for a miracle that not only helps Rohan but all those hospitalized with the illness. Sewa has appealed to the entire community through its 40-plus chapters in the US and via Facebook for donors of plasma to come forward for Rohan’s treatment. Sewa is very optimistic that someone’s blood will match with Rohan’s from hundreds of calls they are receiving from the country every day. The United States continued to far outstrip other nations in new cases, with the country’s overall caseload already at 180,000 and likely to surge further in the next 24 hours. The number of U.S. deaths neared 4,000, The Washington Post reported.

The shipments, which arrived aboard air cargo flights from Germany and Poland, were destined to addresses in states across the United States, but Florida was the most popular. Medical Supply Donation Drive Announced by CA State Assemblyman
State assemblyman Ash Kalra
BY A STAFF WRITER SAN JOSE, CA- California state Assemblyman Ash Kalra, a Democrat who represents San Jose, March 20 announced a safety supplies donation drive in response to the countywide shortage of protective equipment for medical workers to protect them against COVID-19. “Today I am calling on all members of the public, companies, organizations and others to donate needed medical supplies to the Valley Medical Center Foundation,” the Indian American politician said in a statement. “As our first responders, doctors, and nurses risk their safety during the Coronavirus outbreak, they are now lacking the basic tools to do their jobs right, and to do them safely.” Donations can be made to the Valley Medical Center Foundation, which is coordinating public donations of needed medical supplies. “I understand the desire for the public to hold on to many of these items, however, our frontline medical staff need them more than we do,” Kalra added. “If you or anyone you know happens to have a surplus of supplies, please consider donating these items. Together, we can do our part to make a difference and protect these unsung heroes who are keeping our communities safe.” The Valley Medical Center Foundation is located at 400 Clove Drive in San Jose— located on the campus of the Santa Clara County Valley Medical Center Donations are accepted between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. daily. Specifically, the release said, local medical staff need the following new supplies, including masks, hand sanitizer, protective goggles and face shields, disinfectant wipes, infrared thermometers, shoe covers, hair covers and surgical caps. For a complete list of items, please visit https://vmcfoundation.org. Anyone can show up and drop off supplies, which will be put to immediate use by frontline medical staff, the release said.
Contra Costa Count’s First Coronavirus Related Death Belived to Be South Indian Elderly Man BY A STAFF WRITER CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CA- The Contra Costa County, California Public Health Department last week announced its first COVID-19 related death, a man in his ‘70s who had traveled from Europe. In a briefing with reporters, Dr. Chris Farnitano, Contra Costa County’s public health officer, said the elderly man had a condition that placed him at risk and he died at the hospital. Farnitano and the Public Health Department did
not identify the man, nor his ethnicity. But as the news broke over social media, posters identified the man, but did not name
him, as a person from either Andhra Pradesh or Karnataka, who lived in a neighborhood in San Ramon that was largely Indian American. People speculated that the manner of death was a heart attack. One source told India-West that the man’s 45-year-old son also contracted the coronavirus, and has been hospitalized in an intensive care unit. Rumors abounded that the son had also died, but a Contra Costa County health official confirmed to India-West that only one
COVID-19 death has been registered in the county. The source told this publication that the elderly man’s family are all under observation. Others posted on social media that the daughterin-law has tested positive and her children are running high fevers, but this was not confirmed. A Contra Costa County health official cited privacy laws which prevented him from releasing additional information about the victim or family.

‘63% Indians want to replace meat with plant-based food’ NEW DELHI: As the country grapples with health-related issues such as diabetes, healthier food choices might be the flavor of the season with a poll showing that around 63 percent Indians (now want) eat plant-based food in place of meat. An Ipsos report ‘Food Habits of Indians: Ipsos Study’ observed that
Indians are making informed choices, experimenting and moving away from norms. “We know that Indians love their food and would drool for specialties like tandoori chicken, mutton, and fish and their various non-vegetarian avatars. But 63 percent of Indians polled say that are willing to eat a
plant-based substitute for meat,” the report said on Monday. As per the report, 57 percent of the people surveyed consume organic foods. “57 percent Indians claim to be consuming organic food. In sharp contrast, the developed world is least likely to eat organic food -- only 12 percent of Brits and 13 percent of Japanese, for instance,” it said. Ipsos, an independent market research company, carried out the survey between August 24-September 7, 2018 in 29 countries. The sample size for the survey in India was 1,000, it said. —IANS

What is to be blamed for childhood cancer?
P
eople with cancer are over four times more likely to commit suicide than people without the deadly disease, finds a study. According to researchers from the Penn State Cancer Institute in Pennsylvania, while a lot of progress has been made in treating cancer, not as much research has been put into how cancer affects patients mentally and emotionally. “Even though cancer is one of the leading causes of death, most cancer patients do not die from cancer, the patients usually die of another cause,” said Nicholas Zaorsky, radiation oncologist at the Penn State Cancer Institute. “There are multiple competing risks for death, and one of them is suicide. Distress and depression can arise from cancer diagnosis, treatment, financial stress, and

New assistive robot to help elderly live independently NEW YORK: Scientists have created a robot that could help elderly people with dementia and other limitations live independently in their own homes. The Robot Activity Support System, or RAS, developed by the Washington State University (WSU), uses sensors embedded in a smart home to determine where its residents are, what they are doing and when they need assistance with daily activities. It navigates through rooms and around obstacles to find people on its own, provides video instructions on how to do simple tasks and can even lead its owner to objects like their medication or a snack in the kitchen. “RAS combines the convenience of a mobile robot with the activity detection technology of a WSU
smart home to provide assistance at the moment, as the need for help is detected,” said Bryan Minor, postdoctoral student at the WSU. With a number of adults over 85 needing assistance with everyday activities such as preparing meals and taking medication, the researchers hope that technologies like RAS and the smart home will alleviate some of the financial strain on the healthcare system and make it easier for older adults to live alone. —IANS

SYDNEY: A team of researchers has thrown light on the community beliefs about what causes cancer in children, an area which remains understudied, finds a latest research. “Few childhood cancers are attributed to genetics or environmental factors, so when children are diagnosed with cancer, families often wonder ‘why me/why us’?” said lead author Janine Vetsch, postdoctoral research candidate from UNSW Syd-
ney in Australia. For the study, the team examined the beliefs of more than 600 participants — parents and childhood cancer survivors — about the causes of childhood cancer and compared them with beliefs of 510 members of the general population. The findings revealed that more than seven out of 10 childhood cancer survivors and survivors’ parents believed that chance or bad luck caused cancer. —IANS
sis, the risk remains high for patients with Hodgkin lymphoma and testicular cancer. “Treatments for some cancers — like leukemia and testicular cancer
among adolescents and young adults, for example -- can decrease a patient’s fertility, and that seems to be one of the risks for suicide in the long term,” Zaorsky said.
Researchers study patterns of back pain IANS, TORONTO
R
esearchers have examined the patterns of back pain over time and patient characteristics in relation to the disability. In addition, they have identified the extent of healthcare and medication use (including opioids) associated with different patterns. Back pain is among the most frequently reported health problems in the world. For the study, researchers from the University Health Network’s Krembil Research Institute in Toronto, Canada studied 12,782 participants for 16 years. They provided data on factors including comorbidities, pain, disability, opioid, and other medication use, and healthcare visits. The results showed that almost half (45.6 percent) of the participants reported back pain at least once.
The study included four groups of pain: persistent (18 percent), developing (28.1 percent), recovery (20.5 percent), and occasional (33.4 percent). The findings, published in Arthritis Care and Research, showed that the persistent and developing groups tended to have more pain and disability, as well as more healthcare visits and medication use than those in the recovery and occasional trajectory groups.
In addition, the recovery trajectory group increased the use of opioids and antidepressants over time. “The good news is that one in five people with back pain recovered. However, they continued to use opioids and antidepressants, suggesting that people recovering from back pain need ongoing monitoring,” said lead author Mayilee Canizares, postdoctoral candidate from the varsity.
