Clinton wins final debate According to a CNN/ORC instant poll of debate watchers, Clinton beat Trump 52 to 39 per cent. There was a plus or minus 4 percentage point margin of error IANS, LAS VEGAS
D
emocratic nominee Hillary Clinton won final presidential debate, while Republican rival Donald Trump refused to say that he would accept the result of the November 8 election if he lost. “I will look at it at the time,” Trump said when asked by moderator Chris Wallace of Fox News whether he would concede if he loses, following his claims that the election was “rigged” against him, CNN reported. “I will keep you in suspense,” he added In response, Clinton, said her competitor’s remarks were “horrifying” and accused him of taking refuge in the idea that any event that turns out against him — even an Emmy award that goes to a rival — was “rigged”. “That is not the way our democracy works,” Clinton said, adding “We’ve been around for 240 years. We have had free and fair elections, accepted the outcomes when we may not have liked them. And that is what is expected of anyone standing on a debate stage during a general election.” “He is denigrating...he’s talking down our democracy,” the former Secretary of State added. According to a CNN/ORC instant poll of debate watchers, Clinton beat Trump 52 per cent to 39 per cent. There was a plus or minus 4 percentage point margin of error. Trump did outperform expectations, however. Nearly six in 10 viewers said he did better than expected, whereas 44 per cent said the same of Clinton, the poll showed. The showdown began with the two candidates — Clinton dressed in an off-white signature pantsuit and Trump in a black suit with a contrasting bright red tie — taking the stage at University of Nevada’s Thomas and Mack Centre without a hand-shake nor a smile. They debated over issues like, Supreme Court; Second Amendment (protects the rights of people to keep and bear arms) where he hit Clinton for being anti-gun; abortion and the economy where the Manhattan billionaire boasted that as president, he would make the US an economic engine with annual growth rates of 5 or 6 per cent, while if Hillary goes to the White House, growth rates will be less than zero. Trump went on to slam Clinton over her record as Secretary of State, the controversy over her private email server, and painting her as the symptom of a tired political

establishment who had achieved nothing in her 30 years in public life. Clinton she responded by going through her timeline, comparing where she was to where Trump was. While she was in the Situation Room helping to take out slain Al Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden in 2011, “he was hosting the Celebri-
The debate took a turn when Trump and Clinton clashed over republican’s relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin with Clinton blasting Trump as a “puppet” of Putin ty Apprentice”, she said. However, the debate took a turn when Trump and Clinton clashed over the Republican nominee’s relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Clinton blasted Trump as a “puppet” of Putin and directly called on him to condemn what she said was a Russian effort to use cyberattacks to influence the election in her opponent’s favor. “That’s because he (Putin) would rather have a puppet as president of the US,” Clinton said,
implying that Putin wanted Trump to win the election. Trump replied that Putin had no respect for Clinton or President Barack Obama. The Republican nominee said he had never met Putin but agreed that the Russian leader had said nice things about him, and said it would be good if Washington and Moscow worked together to fight the Islamic State (IS) which he said was “born” because of Clinton. The two nominees also sparred over who was qualified to be President. Moderator Wallace pressed Trump on why so many women had come forward to accuse him of sexual assault if the allegations were not true. Trump said the claims were “largely debunked”. He went on to say that he did not even apologize after the 2005 tape with the lewd comments was leaked because “I did not do anything wrong”. “I think they want either fame or her campaign did it,” Trump said. In response, Clinton said, “Donald thinks belittling women makes him bigger. He goes after their dignity and their self worth.” Regarding immigration, Trump reiterated his stance to build the wall along the Mexican border. “We all want the wall...We have to have borders. We have to keep drugs out of the country...She wants to have open borders,” he said.

Syria Conflict: Humanitarian truce begins in city of Aleppo Syrian army have pulled back to allow rebels to leave the eastern part of Aleppo IANS, DAMASCUS
A
three-day “humanitarian truce” has entered into force in the city of Aleppo on Thursday. The general-command of the Syrian army said in a statement the truce will go into effect from 8 a.m. local time to 7 p.m. for three days, Xinhua news agency reported. The statement urged the rebels to lay down their weapons and get advantage of the pardon issued by President Bashar al-Assad to all rebels who surrender themselves to the Syrian army. The general-command said it had detailed information on the whereabouts and positions of the rebels in the eastern part of Aleppo city, stressing that “any armed man
‘Islamic State leaders have fled Mosul’ WASHINGTON: Islamic State leaders have fled the Iraqi city of Mosul which is under a massive siege by Iraqi forces, aided by the US-led coalition forces, a US general has said. Operation Inherent Resolve commander US Gen. Gary Volesky said at a briefing on Wednesday that most of the foreign fighters recruited by the terror group have remained to defend Mosul, the outfit’s stronghold. “We have got indications that [Islamic State] leaders have left, a lot of foreign fighters we expect will stay,” Volesky told reporters at the Pentagon. The US Army general and coalition spokesman explained that it is harder for foreign fighters to flee the area than for local jihadists. “They will be the ones [who] really want to stay and fight because they really do not have any other place to go,” Volesky said. On Monday, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Abadi announced the start of military operations to retake Mosul from Islamic State militants. The US-led coalition is providing Iraqi Security Forces with air power, artillery, intelligence, advisers and other support, the US military’s Central Command has said. The Islamic State, which is outlawed in Russia and other countries, seized Mosul in 2014 along with a number of other Iraqi cities and towns. —IANS

who doesn’t take the chance of the declared truce, will meet his doomed fate”. The statement charged that the
rebels in eastern Aleppo are holding hundreds of families hostages. Meanwhile, state news agency SANA said that rebels started evac-
uating the eastern part of Aleppo on Wednesday evening. A number of armed rebels as well as wounded, sick and aged people exited eastern Aleppo through the passages identified by the Syrian army and the Russian side, Xinhua news agency quoted the report as saying. Evacuating the ultra-radical groups from the city of Aleppo, mainly the terror-designated Jabhat Fateh al-Sham, previously known as the Nusra Front, is a main demand of Russia and the Syrian government in order to loosen the military offensive against eastern Aleppo. Earlier in the day, the Syrian Foreign Ministry said that units of the Syrian army have pulled back to allow the rebels to leave the eastern part of Aleppo.

T
hailand will maintain its intention to hold general elections late next year, as planned by the military junta’s roadmap, despite the death of King Bhumibol Adulyadej, an official said on Monday. Government spokesperson Sansern Kaewkamnerd said the official mourning declared last week following the monarch’s death will not alter the normal activities of the government, nor affect trade and investment in the country, EFE news reported on Monday. After a meeting of several government agencies, the spokesman insisted that the government led by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha

“is holding firm to its roadmap for the next general elections”. “The Prime Minister conveyed a message to the meeting for all gov-
ernment agencies, despite being in grief, not to forget to perform their duties. We can be sad, but we can’t afford to lose our love for the country,” said Sansern. Authorities declared a year of official mourning for King Bhumibol’s death that ended a 70-year reign. Entertainment, including restaurants and bars, may be restricted for at least a month, while most concerts and events have been cancelled. Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn has asked to delay his succession until the mourning period is over. His coronation would take place after the cremation of the monarch, although his proclamation could be made earlier.

mid rising tensions with India, Pakistan’s media regulatory authority on Wednesday approved a complete ban on airing of Indian content in Pakistan from October 21. residential candidate Donald Trump’s address to an anti-terrorism rally organize by the Republican Hindu Coalition drew protests by some Indian Americans and Democratic Party politicians. At a news conference held some distance away because of the tight security surrounding Trump, New Jersey Assemblyman Raj Mukherji said: “If you are a real Hindu, you are also a Muslim; if you are a real Hindu, you are also a Christian; if you are a real Hindu, you are also a Jew. “Because that is what my diaspora community believes in, and that is why we are overwhelmingly going to elect Hillary Clinton as the next President of the United States,” he declared. The New Jersey representative of the group, Amit Jani, said: “We don’t think it’s right for someone from out of the state to come here and raise political issues with our faith and say they speak for over 3.4 million Indian-Americans across the country, even more Muslim-Americans, and the South
Asian communities as a whole.” Muslim community leaders Shariq Ahmad, Sam Khan and Imtiaz Syed, and Hindu community leaders Raju Patel and Sunita Viswanath of the Coalition of Progressive Hindus also spoke at the news conference. The protesters, however, were vastly outnumbered by the 8,000 people who came to the Trump rally. A clutch of protesters gathered in front of a banner announcing the Trump on the route to the venue rally with signs that read, “End Caste apartheid,” “Dump Trump” and “South Asians Against Trump”. A series of opinion polls by the National Asian American Survey showed that Trump’s support among registered Indian American voters slipped from 11 percent in May to seven percent this month, while his Democratic Party opponent, Hillary Clinton held steady at 71 percent.

Bahrain-India Week 2016 (BIW2016), starting from December 1, is being organize by India’s Ministry of External Affairs and Bahrain’s Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism. The Federation of Indian Export Organizations (FIEO) and Indian Business Chamber (IBCHAM) are the two supporting bodies from the Indian side for the event with Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Economic Development Board and Embassy of the Kingdom of Bahrain on the Bahraini side. “The Bahrain-India Week could not have come at a better time,” Maram Anwar J AI Saleh, Charge d’Affairs at the Bahrain embassy here, said while announcing the event late on Friday. “India’s Make in India programme matches perfectly with Bahrain’s Vision 2030,” she stated. NEW YORK: High-flying IndianAmerican hotelier Vikram Chatwal has been arrested for trying to torch two small dogs outside his SoHo condo. Chatwal, 44, posted a $50,000 bail and walked out of Manhattan criminal court. Founder of the Dream Hotel Group, Chatwal was charged with animal torture, criminal mischief and reckless endangerment for the October 7 attack on Wooster St. near Grand St. Chatwal, attired in white with a
grey vest, stood silently before Judge Steve Statsinger, who issued an order of protection for the two dogs — Molly and Finnegan — their owner and their dog walker, the New York Daily News reported. Chatwal’s attorney said his client was a lifetime animal lover who suffers from a bipolar disorder but would never harm an animal. The paper quoted witnesses as saying that Chatwal, who has a reputation for partying at clubs and dating models like Esther Cañadas, stormed up to two Jack Russell Terriers being walked outside his home at about 11.30 a.m. and singed the dogs’ fur with a blow torch that he put together from an aerosol can and a lighter, the daily reported. The dogs suffered minor injuries when their fur was burned, officials said. The businessman turned himself in at the 5th Precinct station house in Chinatown, with a lawyer, an NYPD spokesman said. The hospitality magnate founded The Dream Hotel Group, which includes the Dream, Time and Unscripted hotels. He was arrested for drug possession in 2013 at Florida’s Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport. —IANS

I
t could have been a loaded question for a mystic had it come from a journalist. But the impossibly earnest questioner was a spiritual aspirant who sought Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev’s answer as to what Americans could do to navigate the racially divisive and hate-filled politics of one of the most contentious presidential elections in American history. Sadhguru demurred, and said that the question would lead him into a political morass. But then he got straight to the heart of the matter as he saw it. “The problem is that today (in the US) you have a committed vote, not a considered vote,” he said, referring to a Tamil proverb which spoke of the dilemma of choosing between a good man or a capable one as a king. This committed voter who sticks to a political party no matter what has led, Sadhguru said, to the creation of two tribes (Democrats and Republicans). “Many vote for a party because their fathers and grandfathers did so. You have to remember that you are electing not a leader, but your
Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev
representative who you expect to fulfil your aspirations.” He told the audience on the event night to recognize the potential of the democratic process. “In the past, if power had to shift, blood had to flow,” he said and added “but if democracy is to function as it should, it needs the considered vote.” “All these years,” Sadhguru said,
“Indians have watched the American elections with great interest. Now we watch with great amusement.” Urging Americans to set the agenda for the government, Sadhguru said, “Through social media you can inform the candidates before the next (presidential) debate to invest in well-being, not in opening a new theatre of war.

India raises Pak terror at BRICS Pakistan was isolated because of its pro-terror policies, India tells BRICS members; China disagrees and calls Pakistan “all-weather” friend IANS, BENAULIM (GOA)
P
akistan was isolated because of its pro-terror policies, India said and offered the neighbor help in acting against terrorists. China strongly defended Islamabad, its “all-weather” friend, for making “great sacrifices in fighting terrorism”. The Chinese support to Pakistan came a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi, without naming Pakistan at the Goa BRICS Summit, said the “mothership” of terrorism was in India’s neighborhood. India’s tirade against Pakistan also remained in focus at the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (Bimstec) meeting held alongside the BRICS Summit. BIMSTEC leaders called for greater cooperation between the two blocs, especially on figting terror.

In a joint statement, they slammed attempts made to glorify terrorists and described terrorism as “the single-most significant threat to peace and stability” in the region. “We reiterate our strong commitment to combat terrorism, and
stress that there can be no justification for acts of terror on any grounds. We condemn in the strongest terms the recent barbaric terror attacks in the region,” the statement said. “There should be no glorification of terrorists as martyrs,”
the statement said, in a reference to Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s remarks hailing slain Kashmiri militant commander Burhan Wani as a martyr who was killed in fighting for “freedom” of Kashmir. The statement said the fight against terrorism “should also identify, hold accountable and take strong measures against States who encourage, support and finance terrorism, provide sanctuary to terrorists and terror groups and falsely extol their virtues”. After the BIMSTEC statement, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Vikas Swarup said Pakistan’s isolation was its own doing. But China reacted sharply to India’s allegations against Pakistan. Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hua Chunying said “China and Pakistan are all-weather friends” and Beijing opposed “linking terrorism with any specific ethnicity or religion”.
Bimstec criticizes terror as polity IANS, NEW DELHI

n what is an obvious reference to Pakistan’s use of terrorism as an instrument of state policy, External Affairs Sushma Swaraj said that the invitation to member states of the Bimstec group for an outreach summit at the BRICS Summit showed that these countries “today represent the polar opposite of a terrorism promoting polity”. “The selection of Bimstec as the outreach group for the Goa Summit of the BRICS is also worth reflecting upon,” said Sushma
Swaraj while inaugurating the BRICS Media Forum here. “Members of Bimstec- Bhutan, Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Myanmar and Thailand today represent the polar opposite of a terrorism promoting polity,” she said. “They are focused on improving the quality of life of their people, on skills and employment, on education and health, and on the quality of governance and the deepening of democracy.” After last month’s cross-border terror attack on an army base at Uri in Jammu and Kashmir that

claimed the lives of 19 Indian soldiers, India launched a diplomatic blitz to isolate Pakistan in the international community. India has blamed the Pakistanbased terror outfit Jaish-eMohammed for the Uri attack. Prime Minister Narendra Modi pulled out of the South Asian Association for Regional Coopera-
tion (Saarc) meet that was scheduled to be held in Islamabad in November in protest against Pakistan’s sponsorship of terrorism. Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Bhutan too followed suit citing the same reason while Sri Lanka held that a Saarc summit would not be possible in India’s absence. Pakistan is not a member of Bimstec.
BRIEFS Rita Bahuguna Joshi joins BJP NEW DELHI: Months ahead of the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections, senior Congress leader Rita Bahuguna Joshi on Thursday joined the BJP here in the presence of party chief Amit Shah. Joshi, who had been with the Congress for 24 years, said it was not an easy decision for her but she had taken it in the interest of the country and Uttar Pradesh. The former President of the Congress state unit told the media she had resigned her membership of the state assembly. She represented Lucknow Cantt. Bahuguna’s brother and former Uttarakhand Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna joined the BJP some time back.
Step down: Mulayam told LUCKNOW: A young MLC considered close to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav has asked Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav to step down and let his son take his place. Udayveer Singh, a first time MLC, wrote a “private letter” to Mulayam Singh but it has now found its way into the media. Udayveer Singh told IANS that he was merely airing his personal feelings but which he insisted echoed the views of most party colleagues. Udayveer Singh has also accused Mulayam Singh’s second wife Sadhna of harbouring ill feeling towards her stepson Akhilesh. He added that Shivpal Singh Yadav, the state party chief and a brother of Mulayam Singh, was jealous of the Chief Minister’s popularity. Accusing Sadhna and Shivpal Yadav of collusion, Udayveer Singh alleged that the Chief Minister was being subject to black magic with a view to harm him. —IANS
India, Myanmar to closely coordinate on border security IANS, NEW DELHI

ndia and Myanmar have agreed to closely coordinate with each other on border security while Prime Minister Narendra Modi reaffirmed New Delhi’s commitment to help develop Myanmar. “As close and friendly neighbors, the security interests of India and Myanmar are closely aligned,” Modi said in the presence of Myanmar State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi after delegation-level talks between the two sides. “We have agreed that a close coordination to ensure security in the areas along our border, and sensitivity to each other’s strategic

interests, will serve the interests of both our countries,” Modi said. India shares a 1,600-km border
with Myanmar. Security has been an issue with insurgent groups from the northeast taking refuge in
Myanmar’s densely forested territory. In August, the Indian Army reportedly carried out surgical strikes in Myanmar after National Socialist Council of NagalandKhaplang (NSCN-K) militants fled to Myanmar from Mon in Nagaland after being attacked. According to a joint statement, both sides “reaffirmed their shared commitment to fight insurgent activity and the scourge of terrorism in all its forms and manifestations”. “Both sides expressed the view that the long-standing commitment not to allow insurgent groups to use their soil for hostile activities against the other side is essential for the prosperity of the
people residing along the border,” it stated. Stating that India had a robust development cooperation program with Myanmar, Modi, in his address to the media, mentioned the Kaladan multi-modal transport project linking Sittwe port in Myanmar with Mizoram and the trilateral highway connecting India, Myanmar and Thailand among others. India and Myanmar signed three MoUs following the talks -- one on cooperation in power sector, another on banking supervision and a third on designing an academic and professional building program for the insurance industry of Myanmar.

he Delhi government directed the authorities to intensify the anti-firecrackers campaign aimed at controlling air and noise pollution and sought strict action against violators to ensure a pollution-free Diwali. Delhi’s Environment Minister Imran Hussain issued the directions during a review meeting here attended by Divisional Commissioners and senior officers of Police besides officials from the Environment Department and Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC), officials said. Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia also wrote to the school principals and heads of colleges and sought their support in the campaign. ‘40% growth in consumer demand during festivities’
NEW DELHI: Indian consumer demand is currently seeing good growth of around 40 per cent in the ongoing festival season, as compared to 2015, on the back of an upturn in the economy and improving perception of better job prospects coupled with steady lowering of interest rates, industry chamber Assocham said citing a survey. “Riding on the back of an uptick in the economy and improving perception for better job prospects, coupled with steady lowering of interest rates, consumer demand is witnessing a marked growth of as muchs 40 per
cent in the ongoing festival season this year, as compared to 2015,” the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India said in a release. “ Rural demand is adding to the festive fervour, as a good monsoon has boosted confidence among farmers and farm labour. However, as noted in an earlier Assocham survey, the demand for real estate and housing remains very low key,” it said. The uptick in demand is seen clearly in the sale of automobiles, mobile handsets and fashion-wears. —IANS

Bengal observes Lakshmi Puja IANS, KOLKATA
H
ouseholds and community marquees across West Bengal celebrated Kojagori Lakshmi Puja with much fanfare and fervour, fasting late into the night and praying for prosperity and wealth. Popularly known as Kojagori Lakshmi puja in this part of India, it is observed on a full moon night (Kojagori Purnima) after Durga Puja. The word Kojagori literally means a night of awakening and signifies ‘ke jege ache’ or ‘who is awake’ in keeping with the belief that goddess Lakshmi, the Hindu goddess of wealth, visits every house at night to ascertain who is awake and blesses those who are awake, with prosperity. To guide the goddess into their homes, women and children drew colorful ‘Alpona’ patterns from rice flour on the floor, across doorways and inside temples. Powdered rice was used to draw the goddess’s feet entering the house. Families offered grain, flattened

The puja also coincides with the harvest festival (Nabanna). Family gatherings with generous servings of luchis (fried flour chapatis) with an array of sugary chutneys and laddoos helped masked the sadness that prevails after the conclusion of the Durga puja.

DDCA officials differ on Lodha panel issue Chauhan said the future steps will be decided after final judgement of the court IANS, NEW DELHI
D
elhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) Vice-President Chetan Chauhan said that there is a rift in the association over the recommendations of the Supreme Court appointed Justice R.M. Lodha Committee. “There is a difference of opinion among the members. Some of them want to follow the BCCI line on the issue. Others among us are law abiding people. They want to abide by what the Supreme Court says,” Chauhan told reporters. “Let the final judgement of the court come. Only then will we decide on our future steps,” he added. The Justice R.M. Lodha Committee appointed by the Supreme Court proposed several far-reaching changes that could alter the way cricket is administered in the country. Among other things, the Lodha panel had also sought the removal of the entire top brass of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), including its president Anurag Thakur. The apex court in its July 18 judgment accepted the recommendations of the Lodha Committee on
Bengaluru FC beat Johor in AFC match BENGALURU: Bengaluru FC became the first Indian club to reach the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Cup final by trouncing holders Malaysia’s Johor Darul Ta’zim 3-1 in the semi-final second leg here this week. The two-time I-League champions won 4-2 on aggregate and now take on Iraqi club Al-Quwa AlJawiya in the final on November 5 in Doha, Qatar. Bengaluru remained indebted to skipper and mercurial forward Sunil Chhetri who scored a brace on either side of halftime with defender Juanan adding gloss to the scoreline after the visitors had taken the lead through Safiq Bin Rahim early on in the game at the Kanteerava Stadium. Johor scored as early as in the 11th minute, skipper Rahim heading in from close after Bengaluru goalkeeper Amrinder Singh failed to parry away Safee Ali’s venomous strike. —IANS

the organizational reforms of the BCCI and had issued these as its directives. The BCCI had filed a review petition against the Lodha panel’s suggestions. The petition was to be heard by the apex court on Tuesday. However, the hearing has been postponed for a couple of weeks. The apex court in a recent order prevented the BCCI from disbursing funds to its state associations except in cases of cricket related activities. Chauhan, however, insisted that the DDCA has enough
funds to conduct October 20 OneDayer between India and New Zealand and will not require financial assistance from the BCCI. With the DDCA hosting the second India-New Zealand match on October 20, Chauhan asserted that the wicket will be perfect for some exciting cricket. “The wicket won’t be green but there will be a little bit of grass. It is a perfect wicket for One-Dayers and Twenty20 matches. There will be some extra bit of carry for the fast bowlers,” he said.
NEW DELHI: A book penning the life of India’s Test skipper Virat Kohli has been launched here in the presence of several high-profile cricketing personalities. The book, named “Driven: The Virat Kohli Story” has been written by senior journalist Vijay Lokapally and published by Bloomsbury India. It was unveiled in an event. Kohli and his coach Raj Kumar Sharma were present on the occasion. Among the other luminaries present were cricketers Virender Sehwag, Kapil Dev, Anil Kumble, Ravi Shastri, Ashish Nehra, Ajay Jadeja, Karthik Murali, Hari Gidwani and Anjum Chopra. Unveiling the book, Kohli said in a release, “I am humbled by the fact that Vijay sir wrote a book about me and grateful for the support of my family, friends, mentors, team-mates and the wider cricketing community who taught me how to believe in myself. This book is as much about them as it is about me.”
In the book, Lokapally recounts life-altering tales and anecdotes on the journey of Virat’s rapid rise to international stardom, an account punctuated with little-known stories by his fellow players, coaches and intimates. The book celebrates the career of Virat Kohli and introduces readers to the man not known to many. At 27, he has already been the recipient of countless accolades including the Arjuna Award, the title of BCCI’s ‘International Cricketer of the Year’ as well as the ICC’s ‘ODI Player of the Year’. “I have tried to put in front of the reader the story of the making of Virat. There are some anecdotes which bring out the amazing cricketer that he is, a wonderful friend in the dressing room, and most importantly, an icon who speaks up for gender equality, safety of senior citizens and many social issues, as an important citizen of the country,” Lokapally said. —IANS

rimming with confidence after a convincing victory in the first One-Day International (ODI), limited-overs skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni will eye another big win when favorites India take on New Zealand in the second match of the five-match rubber at the Ferozeshah Kotla Stadium in Delhi. With the conditions at the Ferozeshah Kotla favoring the spinners, the hosts will bank on their last ODI performance where Kedar Jadhav and experienced leggie Amit Mishra ran through the Kiwi’s middle and lower order. It is also expected that Dhoni will not make any changes to the playing eleven as each player seemed like complementing each other in the last match. Star batsman Suresh Raina will miss the second ODI against New Zealand as the southpaw is still recovering from a bout of viral fever. In the batting department,

Safe release of ‘ADHM’: Rajnath A delegation led by Mukesh Bhatt meets home minister; Rajnath assures the safe release of Ae Dil Hai Mushkil which is under threat from MNS IANS, DELHI
U
nion Home Minister Rajnath Singh assured Mukesh Bhatt, president of a film producers’ body, that Karan Johar’s Ae Dil Hai Mushkil will get a safe and secure release in theatres on October 28 — two days before Diwali — amid vandalism threats from MNS. A delegation led by Bhatt went to meet Singh, who assured a “great Diwali” to them with the release of the film, which is under threat from the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) for featuring Pakistani actor Fawad Khan. Bhatt, President of the Film and Television Producers Guild of India, told media here after the

meeting: “We came to meet Rajnath Singh because we were scared that law and order in our nation, especially in Mumbai, was getting out of hand.”
We came here to get assurance from the Home Ministry that they will tell chief ministers of all the states to keep the law and order intact, and won’t let Aa Dil Hai
Mushkil get into trouble when it releases on October 28.” “He (Rajnath) gave us the assurance that whatever support we want from the government, we will get it. He said he will talk to all the chief ministers and tell them to maintain law and order.” Bhatt says he is assured of being “safe and protected”. Trouble for Ae Dil Hai Mushkil began when the debate about letting Pakistani artistes working in India sparked off, following the September 18 Uri attack which killed 19 Indian soldiers in Jammu and Kashmir. The attack was followed by surgical attacks that India conducted across the LoC. The tension between India and Pakistan had a spillover effect on film industries on both sides of the border.

ter Nawaz Sharif on December 25 as at the same time, Karan was shooting Ae Dil Hai Mushkil. This did not go down well with people on Twitter. Justifying his tweets, Kashyap wrote: “Just to make it clear, I complain because I expect my government to protect us, I question the PM because I have every right to.” “And anyone who questions my love for the country by shouting, must prove their love by representing the country either on the border or prove your love by representing the country in an honorable way.” he said.

et in sin city Mumbai, Fuddu is a sweet, simple romantic comedy that gives you an insight into the brazen lifestyle of its middle-class immigrants who cram up in match-box dwellings. Realistically portrayed, the film looks into the life of Mohan Mishra who comes to Mumbai from Benaras for greener pastures and soon realizes that the shimmer of this glitzy city is all fake. Reality hits him when, in the city, he has to live
with his two older brothers and their families, in a chawl and is advised, “adjust karna seekh le tu”, which means ‘learn to adjust’. Adjust to his new life, he does. But, the problem arises after he gets married. Being shy, conservative, considerate and dense on the
uptake, with eight members of the family crammed in a ten-by-ten room, he is unable to consummate his marriage and is taunted about it. How he overcomes this difficult situation, forms the crux of this rom-com. — Troy Ribeiro

BY A STAFF WRITER ERSEY CITY, NJ -- An IndianAmerican immigration attorney for two IT companies has admitted before a New Jersey federal court judge that she submitted phony documents and obstructed a federal investigation as part of a scheme to secure foreign worker visas fraudulently. Sunila Dutt, 39, of Ashburn, Virginia, on October 17 pleaded guilty before US District Judge Kevin McNulty in Newark federal court to an information charging her with conspiracy to commit visa fraud and obstruct justice. Dutt faces a maximum potential penalty of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Sentencing is scheduled for February 6 next. According to the information submitted in court, SCM Data Inc. and MMC Systems Inc. offered consultants to clients in need of IT support. Both companies recruited foreign nationals, often student visa holders or recent college graduates, and sponsored them for H-1B visas. Dutt and other conspirators recruited foreign workers with purported IT expertise who sought work in the US. They then sponsored the foreign workers’ H-1B visas purportedly for SCM Data and MMC Systems’ clients throughout the United States. They submitted false information to procure the visas, and broke H1-B regulations on payment to the foreign workers. In some cases, they even generated false payroll records giving the appearance that the foreign workers were paid full-time wages, when in fact, the workers had to give their gross wages in cash to the IT companies which in exchange paid them smaller amounts. The workers were then encouraged to submit false payroll records USCIS. Dutt admitted that she submitted, or caused to be submitted, one or more filings to USCIS falsely representing that the companies would employ foreign workers for in-house positions when no such positions existed. She also admitted that she submitted a false I-129 petition to USCIS to extend an H1-B visa. She also admitted to other irregularities.

BY A STAFF WRITER ARY, NC -- A 7-year-old Muslim boy was badly beaten up by some of his classmates onboard a school bus in North Carolina, and the boy’s father is blaming Donald Trump’s inflammatory rhetoric for the ‘senseless attack’. “Welcome to the United States of America of Donald Trump,” Zeeshan-ul-Hassan Usmani captioned a Facebook photo showing his son, Abdul, with his left arm in a sling. “He is in grade 1, bullied and beaten by his own classmates in school bus for being a Muslim.” According to Usmani, at least two Weatherstone Elementary School students called his son racial slurs and challenged him to a fight once they got on the bus after school last week. “Once Abdul firmly said, ‘Leave me alone’ they started pounding him, kicking, punching, slapping and twisted his arm,” Usmani said, adding his son suffered a sprained arm as well as bruises and bumps on his head. School principal Timothy Chadwick told parents in a letter that school officials had launched an investigation. But, he noted, they had not been able to substantiate any of Usmani’s claims. “At this time, the information from the investigation does not support an altercation,” Chadwick said. “No students who were interviewed witnessed an altercation. The bus driver did not witness an altercation. The child did not report to the bus driver about any injury.” But Usmani says this was just the latest in a long string of harassment incidents that he and his family members have been subjected to because of their faith.

Now is the time for participating in political arena A quick and concise views of US Presidential Candidate
BY HI INDIA TEAM i India, in a research project on the position and stands of both the presidential Candidate from Republican and Democratic Party, has collected and compiled a slew of data, statistics, surveys, reviews, interviews and other issues raised by several main stream media houses. This is an unbiased comparison of the political positions and policies of Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, US Presidential nominees from the Democratic party and Republican parties respectively. On many issues, the candidates’ positions align with the political platform of their party — Trump is pro-life, Clinton is pro-choice,; Trump wants to deport all undocumented immigrants and build a wall on the Mexican border while Clinton supports the DREAM Act and a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants, ; Clinton wants to expand gun control legislation, Trump does not; Clinton wants to raise taxes on high-income households while Trump wants to cut taxes for all income brackets.

Singh, the first Sikh to be made honorary police assistance in Chicago, will bridge gap between policemen and community members in cases of hate crimes and discrimination. “That is the important thing, we religious persons, spiritual persons, will tell the community, the people of Rockford, the police serves you,” he told journalists. “My goal is to serve the humanity and deliver the message of Sikkhism in western community which are the need of the hour,” he said. Singh said it was important for religious leaders and police to work together for betterment of the community. His duties include providing support and assistance to police officers, firefighters, other employees and their families during times of crisis. Singh will assist police officers and firefighters to communicate with victims when required. The Chaplain Section of the police department also assists people in emergency-like situations.
C Orlando. Trump faced bipartisan criticism for insinuating that a federal judge born in Indiana to parents who emigrated from Mexico was unable to preside fairly over the Trump University fraud case because of his “Mexican heritage.” Clinton Is Seen as Untrustworthy and Corrupt Voters who have an unfavorable view of Clinton don’t think she is trustworthy and almost four in 10 voters (39 percent) say she is corrupt. The most recent Clinton criticism has been focused on her use of a private email server while serving as a secretary of State and her refusal to release transcripts of paid speeches she gave to investment banks on Wall Street. A little
over one-fifth of voters (21 percent) said Clinton changes her positions when it’s politically convenient. Many voters say that she is out of touch with average Americans and says one thing but does another, and she doesn’t share their values. rights and her leadership in advancing criminal justice reforms. IACFNJ Navratri Garba in South Brunswick, NJ BY A STAFF WRITER OUTH BRUNSWICK, NJ -- IndoAmerican Cultural Foundation of Central Jersey (IACFNJ) held its Grand Navratri Garba celebration in South Brunswick on October 1, 7 and 8 at Cross Roads South Middle School, 195 Major Road in Monmouth Junction, New Jersey. The last two days of Garba to celebrate Sharad Poornima will be held on October 14 and 15 where renowned singer Manish Sawla and key-board player Brij Joshi will perform to mark the celebrations of Sharad Poornima. IACFNJ held this year’s Garba in a state-ofthe-art gymnasium at the Middle School in South Brunswick in a highly-secured environment. South Brunswick and surrounding areas are culturally diverse neighborhood where South Asians are highly populated in surrounding towns of North Brunswick, Franklin Park, Princeton, Hightstown, Princeton Junction, Monroe, East Brunswick, Robbinsville and East and West Windsor. More than 5000 people attended three days of raas-gaba to celebrate Hindu’s religious and cultural festival. The response was so overwhelming that the organizers had to shut the door early due to maximum numbers allowed in the gym on October 8. The cultural diversity of Central Jersey
BY A STAFF WRITER ERSEY CITY, NJ -- An Indian-American candidate for US Congress in New Jersey is speaking out against Donald Trump’s rhetoric after vandals defaced his home with swastikas twice in a matter of days. Peter Jacob (D), who is running for office in the state’s 7th Congressional District, says the sidewalk outside his Union home was vandalized with swastikas, and that the back wall of his house was covered with the symbol two days later. Jacob said in an email to supporters that such a hate crime was exactly the kind of behavior that the GOP presidential nominee enables. “Let there be no mistake, the people who committed this crime did so because they feel comfortable and confident to commit hateful acts due to an ever-increasing atmosphere of accepted racism,” Jacob said. “We must work harder than ever to ensure that on November 8, we do not let a man who has called for a ban on an entire religion, someone who has advocated for sexual assault, incest, and an attack on women’s rights, into office.” Jacob also called out his Republican opponent, four-term incumbent Rep. Leonard Lance, for supporting Trump’s White House run. The rise of Islamophobia in the U.S. has made targets out of many brown-skinned people, regardless of their religion. The Council on American Islamic Relations has spoken out against these attacks, including the one against Jacob. “This kind of hate crime cannot be tolerated,” the New Jersey CAIR chapter’s executive director said in a statement. “We ask for a full investigation. When any group is singled out for hate we all have to stand together for justice and tolerance.”

Baby girl falls to death in elevator accident BY A STAFF WRITER ROOKLYN, NY -- A 6-week-old baby girl died when her stroller accidentally fell down an elevator shaft in a Brooklyn building on October 13. Infant Areej Ali The infant’s 21-yearold mother Haifa Ali, of Brooklyn, was waiting with the stroller on the 23rd floor of an apartment building in Coney Island around 11.40 am. She left her apartment at the Bay Park II housing complex in the Sea Gate neighborhood around 10.30 am with her baby in a stroller. Ali pushed the button for the elevator, calling it to the 23rd floor of 3415 Neptune Avenue. When the door opened, she pushed the stroller into what she thought would be a waiting car – but it was not there. Baby fell eight stories, landing on top of the elevator, which was out of operation and had stopped on the 15th floor. The baby, Areej Ali, was pronounced dead at Coney Island Hospital. The mother was hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries.

was witnessed at the event where the attendees from all regions of India and other neighboring countries became part of the celebrations. The special attraction of the event was participants from high school kids of various ethnic and cultural back grounds which rarely seen at any other Garba events in the country. The Goddess Amba Maa’s divine traditional Aarti and prayers were performed followed by the variety of prasad to all attendees. The local business entrepreneurs, community leaders, local and state public officials and large number of Asian Indians attended the celebration to support IACFNJ
community efforts to keep Indian culture and heritage alive in the state. South Brunswick Councilman Charlie Carley and Joseph Camarota, Jr., New Jersey’s 16th Legislative District Assemblyman Andrew Zwicker, South Brunswick School Board Members Azra Baig and Deven Patel were among the special guests who attended the event. High maternal obesity a risk A study showed pregnancies complicated by maternal obesity are linked to adverse outcomes IANS, NEW YORK
T
he unprecedented global increase in obesity among pregnant women is leading to rise in high-risk pregnancies that may affect both mother and child, a study has found. The findings showed that obesity is associated with reduced fertility, and pregnancies complicated by maternal obesity are associated with adverse outcomes, including increased risk of gestational diabetes, pre-eclampsia, preterm birth, instrument-assisted and caesarean section births, infections and post-partum hemorrhage. The epidemic of obesity is felt in
Sleep-deprived kids eat more NEW YORK: Young kids who miss daytime nap and also stay up late at night are likely to consume more calories, suggests new research. These findings may shed light on how sleep loss can increase weight gain and why a number of studies
show that preschoolers who do not get enough sleep are more likely to be obese as a child and later in life. “To our knowledge, this is the first published study to experimentally measure the effects of sleep loss on food consumption in preschool children,” said study first author Elsa Mullins from University of Colorado Boulder in the US. “Our results are consistent with those from other studies of adults and adolescents, showing increased caloric intake on days that subjects were sleep deprived,” she said. In this small study, preschoolers were deprived of roughly three hours of sleep on one day - they had no afternoon nap and were kept up for about two hours past their normal bedtime - before being awakened at their regularly scheduled times the next morning. —IANS

prenatal clinics and delivery rooms around the world with a worrisome trend in high-risk pregnancies that could impact mother and child, said Patrick M. Catalano, Professor at the Case Western Reserve University in Ohio, US. Further, high maternal obesity rate is exposing children to various health issues like congenital anomalies, neonatal adiposity and high risk for childhood obesity. “The management of obesity in pregnancy begins before, during and after pregnancy,” said Catalano. However, there are no standard guidelines for the management of obesity in pregnancy, he added.
High cholesterol may harm bones
SYDNEY: High cholesterol, which is a known factor for the decrease in heart health may harm more than our cardiovascular systems and lead to bone loss, say researchers, including one of Indian-origin. The new research conducted using animal models suggests that high levels of cholesterol can trigger mitochondrial oxidative stress on cartilage cells — connective tissue — causing them to die. This may ultimately lead to development of osteoarthritis — a type of arthritis that occurs when flexible tissue at the ends of bones wears down, said Indira Prasadam, a researcher at Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, Australia. —IANS
IVF may help reduce birth defects
International Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology (BJOG), the research is based on data of all live births recorded in South Australia from 1986-2002. These include more than
301,000 naturally conceived births, as well as 2,200 births from IVF and almost 1,400 from ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection). The average prevalence of a birth defect was 5.7 per cent among naturally conceived births, 7.1 per cent for the IVF births, and 9.9 per cent for the ICSI births, across all the age groups. In births from assisted reproduction, the prevalence of birth defects was 3.6 per cent for women aged 40 and older using IVF. For natural conceptions, the corresponding prevalence was 8.2 per cent in women aged 40 plus. “For women who are treated with IVF and ICSI combined, the greatest age-related risk of birth defects was among the young women, at or around 29 years of age,” Davies said.
hepatitis infection. We found that each of these three factors was associated, robustly, with liver cancer risk. All three relate to metabolic dysfunction,” said Peter Campbell,
researcher at the American Cancer Society. The study adds substantial support to liver cancer being on the list of obesity-associated cancers.

abies born to women aged 40 and over from assisted reproduction technologies are likely to have fewer birth defects compared with those from women who conceive naturally at the same age, a new research has found. “There’s something quite remarkable occurring with women over the age of 40 who use assisted reproduction,” said lead author Michael Davies, Professor at Robinson Research Institute, University of Adelaide in Australia. “Infertile women aged 40 and over who used assisted reproduction had less than half the rate of birth defects of fertile women of the same age, while younger women appear to be at an elevated risk,” the author Davies noted.
The researchers believe this could point to the presence of more favorable biological conditions in IVF (in vitro fertilization) specific to pregnancies in older women. Published in the BJOG: An

ndividuals with high body mass index (BMI), increased waist circumference, and Type 2 diabetes may be at an increased risk of developing liver cancer, a study has found. The findings showed that for every 5 kg/m2 increase in BMI, there was a 38 and 25 per cent increase in the risk for liver cancer
in men and women, respectively. For every 5 cm increase in waist circumference, the increase in risk for liver cancer was 8 per cent. Participants with Type 2 diabetes mellitus were 2.61 times more likely to be diagnosed with liver cancer, and the risk increases with increase in BMI, the researchers said. “Liver cancer isn’t simply related to excess alcohol intake and viral
