Chaos In US Congress After Joe Trump will not speak at New York fraud Biden's Son's Surprise Turn-Up trial, says judge HiIndia Newsdesk

Washington: Republicans recommended Wednesday that Hunter Biden be held in criminal contempt of the US Congress for snubbing a summons -- after scenes of chaos erupted on Capitol Hill when the president's son turned up in person to defend himself. Tw o R e p u b l i c a n - l e d Ho u s e o f Representatives committees -- oversight and judiciary -- had gathered separately to debate contempt resolutions after the younger Biden defied their subpoenas for closed-door testimony last month. The party is racing to inflict damage on President Joe Biden ahead of November's election, where its nominee is likely to be the Democrat's scandalplagued predecessor, Donald Trump. They have launched an impeachment investigation into the Democrat over allegations -- for which they have provided no evidence -- that he benefited from Hunter's foreign business dealings. "Donald Trump wants you to be angry every day because he is angry... I am going to make sure that in no way do I enable Donald Trump to ever be president of the United States again. “Anyone who is unwilling to say (Trump) is unfit to be President of the United States is unfit themselves to be President of the United States," he added. He also told the audience that "tt is clear to me tonight that there isn’t a path for me to win the nomination, which is why I’m suspending my campaign tonight for President of the US".

How A US Couple Used A Lottery Loophole And Math Skills To Win Over Rs. 200 Crore

A retired couple from the United States has managed to accumulate over $26 million (approximately ₹ 200 crore) in lottery prizes, thanks to their impressive math skills. Jerry and Marge Selbee, 80 and 81 respectively, ran a convenience store in Evart until they sold it and retired in their 60s, New York Post reported. In 2003, Mr. Selbee saw a brochure for a new lottery game called Winfall and quickly figured out a mathematical loophole that could almost guarantee winning. The game, called WinFall, had a unique feature that if the jackpot reached US$5 million ($7 million) and failed to go off, the money would roll down to ticket holders with fewer winning numbers. He was sure that the mathematical flaw would mean guaranteed winnings if he bought enough tickets. Mr. Selbee, who majored in math in college, calculated that if he spent $1,100 on 1,100 tickets, odds are he'd have one four-number winner that would pay out $1,000, and at least 18 or 19 three-number winners that paid $900. That meant his $1,100 investment would yield a $1,900 return, for a tidy profit of $800. ''I looked at the odds, I looked at what the payoff would be and I did a risk-

earning approximately $6,300 in winnings. After that, he bet $8,000 and again doubled his money game. He told CBS News, ''If I played $1100, mathematically I'd have one four-number winner – that's 1000 bucks. I divided 1100 by six instead of 57, because I did a mental quick dirty, and I came up with 18. So I knew I'd have either 18 or 19 three-number winners, and that's 50 bucks each. At 18, I got $1000 for a four-number winner, and I got 18 three-

number winners worth $50 each, so that's 900 bucks. So I got $1100 invested and I've got a $1900 return. It's just basic arithmetic." Eventually, they got so good at the game that they set up a corporation, G.S. Investment Strategies, and invited their friends and family to buy into the business for $500 apiece. Later, they came to know about a similar Winfall lottery in Massachusetts, nearly 700 miles away. So the Selbees traveled to Massachusetts every time there was a rolldown, buying hundreds of thousands of tickets at two convenience stores. The Selbees said that over the nine years they played Winfall, their group won a total of $26 million and they made about $8 million in profit before taxes. The money was used to renovate their house and help pay for the schooling of their six children, 14 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. Their winnings and large purchase of tickets also triggered an investigation by the Inspector General. However, it was discovered that the Selbees had been playing by the rules and there was nothing illegal about their methods. The Selbees' story now has become the inspiration for the new movie ''Jerry & Marge Go Large.''

Goa: A 39-year-old Bengaluru start-up founder allegedly murdered her fouryear-old son in Goa and travelled to Karnataka with his body before she was caught. Suchana Seth, CEO of artificial intelligence start-up Mindful AI Lab, was arrested in Karnataka's Chitradurga on Monday with her son's body in a bag. She allegedly killed her young son in an apartment in north Goa's Candolim. The motive for the shocking crime is not known yet but police suspect the CEO's estranged relationship with her husband as a possible reason behind the killing. Police said Ms Seth, who is a native of West Bengal, was unhappy about her ongoing divorce with her husband Venkat Raman. Ms Seth checked into the Sol Banyan Grande in North Goa's Candolim with her son on Saturday, while her husband, who works as an AI developer, was in Indonesia. On Monday, she checked out of the room alone and asked the hotel staff to book her a taxi to Bengaluru. She insisted on taking a taxi despite being advised to take a flight, the staff said. The staff noticed that her son was missing. After she left, the housekeeping staff also noticed bloodstains in the apartment she had occupied. They informed the Goa police, who called the taxi driver and asked to speak to Ms Seth. When she was asked about her son, she claimed he was with a friend and gave an address, which turned out to be fake.

New Delhi: In strong comments on India's response to the 26/11 attacks and what has changed with the surgical strikes and the Balakot strike, former diplomat Ajay Bisaria has said New Delhi was over-reliant on diplomacy in 2008 and its responses in recent years have ensured that it now has an answer to Pakistan's subconventional warfare. Speaking exclusively to NDTV on Tuesday, Mr Bisaria - who was the Indian High Commissioner to Pakistan when the Balakot airstrike was carried out in February 2019 also said Indian diplomats' confidence levels have changed because they have a clear mandate and confidence in the leadership. The former diplomat has written in his new book, 'Anger Management: The Troubled Diplomatic Relationship between India and Pakistan' that there was a policy dilemma when it came to tackling terrorism and that India's restraint had perhaps sent a wrong message to terrorists and their backers in Pakistan.

TEXAS- The Justice Department has taken legal action against Texas, filing a lawsuit on Wednesday to prevent the implementation of a contentious law. This law would permit police officers to apprehend migrants who cross the U.S. border unlawfully and grant judges the power to mandate their deportation. Although the District concluded the previous fiscal year with a surplus, Bowser had only recently committed to this allocation, as of Wednesday night. Laura Zeilinger, Director of the D.C. Department of Human Ser vices, affirmed the temporar y benefit increase, stating, “Despite ongoing fiscal and administrative challenges, I informed the Mayor tonight that DHS is committed to implementing this program as we work towards resolving persistent issues.” This decision materialized following a warning from Legal Aid DC to the Bowser administration, indicating their intent to initiate a lawsuit on Thursday should SNAP funding not align with D.C. regulations.

Justice Department: Enhanced Background Checks Thwart 500+ Illegal Firearm Purchases HiIndia Newsdesk

WASHINGTON, DC- On June 25, 2022, President Biden enacted the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act (BSCA), mandating enhanced FBI NICS background checks for firearm sales or transfers to individuals under 21 (U21). Beyond standard checks, this involves expanded collaboration with state and local officials for additional disqualifying data. Since October 2022, over 200,000 enhanced checks have prevented 1,900 firearms from reaching prohibited individuals. Notably, 527 denials, solely from BSCA-outreach information,

Under Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, Outreach Efforts Lead to 500th Denial of Illegal Firearm Purchase by Individuals Under 21 in December prevented potentially illicit U21 transactions. Attorney General Merrick B. Garland highlighted that the BSCA

prevented 500+ firearms from reaching ineligible youth, emphasizing the Justice Department’s commitment to curb gun violence. The 500th BSCA-related denial (Dec. 18, 2023) used state police records to identify a prospective buyer’s unlawful drug use. Additional instances included denials due to convictions like felony rape, active court-ordered firearm restrictions, mental health issues, and pending criminal charges. Furthermore, the FBI intensifies collaborations, offering training to 500+ law enforcement agencies and over 2,000 state criminal justice officials to bolster these enhanced checks.

HiIndia Newsdesk

The FBI acknowledged multiple hoax bomb threats sent to state Capitols nationwide. Although no specific credible threat was identified, the FBI emphasized the seriousness of such hoaxes. An email titled “Explosives inside of your State Capitol” claimed the presence of hidden explosives. Originating from overseas, the threats targeted state buildings in several states including Kentucky, Maine, and New York. After investigations and evacuations, no explosives were found. Authorities have since reopened most buildings, and the FBI encourages the public to report suspicious activities.

MIT Engineer Vijay’s Sherawali Temple Attacked Develops Vibrating To Help Treat With Pro-Khalistan Graffiti In California Pill Obesity HiIndia Newsdesk

SAN FRANCISCO, CA- San Francisco: Another Hindu temple in California has fallen victim to vandalism, this time with pro-Khalistan graffiti. The incident occurred at Vijay’s Sherawali Temple in Hayward, Bay Area, just two weeks after the Shri Swaminarayan Mandir Hindu Temple in Newark was similarly vandalized with anti-India graffiti. The Hindu American Foundation (HAF) reported the latest act of vandalism on Friday, revealing that the Vijay’s Sherawali Temple had sustained a copycat defacement. This comes in the wake of not only the Swaminarayan Mandir attack but also a theft at the Shiv Durga Temple in the same area one week prior. HAF has taken action by contacting the Alameda Police Department and the Civil Rights Division. The foundation expressed its concern and solidarity, stating, “HAF is in touch with temple leaders and contact with @AlamedaPD & @CivilRights.” In response to these incidents, the Hindu American Foundation has urged

Property Owners Urged To Pay Late Taxes To Avoid Annual Tax Sale

WASHINGTON, DC- The FBI Washington Field Office, ATF, MPD, and USCP are seeking the public’s help to identify the suspect who placed pipe bombs near the RNC and DNC headquarters in Washington, D.C., in January 2021. A $500,000 reward is offered for information leading to the suspect’s arrest and conviction. Despite three years of investigation, the perpetrator remains unidentified. The suspect placed the bombs in Capitol Hill the night before the U.S. Capitol riots, posing a serious threat to bystanders. The public is urged to review the Seeking Information webpage for images and details and to contact the FBI with any relevant information at 1-800-CALLFBI or tips.fbi.gov. Tips can remain anonymous.

the ongoing risk from anti-Hindu actors. The Shri Swaminarayan Mandir Hindu Temple, vandalized on December 23, prompted condemnation from the US State Department. The department welcomed the efforts of the Newark Police Department to hold the culprits accountable for the vandalism.

CHICAGO, IL- Cook County property owners are running out of time to pay taxes that were due in 2022 and avoid the Annual Tax Sale that begins Tuesday, Jan. 9. To find out if your property is on the Annual Tax Sale list: • Go to cookcountytreasurer.com • Use the purple box on the home page labeled “Your Property Tax Overview” and search using an address or Property Index Number (PIN) • A banner with an urgent warning will appear if your property is on the Annual Tax Sale list. You may also use the website to correct your mailing address. Each year the U.S. Postal Service returns thousands of certified notices sent to owners of properties on the Annual Tax Sale list because property owners have not kept their mailing addresses up to date. The Annual Tax Sale will occur Jan. 9-12 for properties with unpaid 2021 property taxes due in 2022. Delinquent tax bills will be re-offered for sale on Jan. 16. The Annual Tax Sale occurs 13 months after the due date. Owners of 47,216 properties owe

more than $211 million in taxes that were due in 2022. More than 26,000 owe more than $1,000 while 20,888 owe less than $1,000, including owners of 14,738 properties in Chicago and 6,150 parcels in suburban Cook County. The Treasurer’s Office mailed certified notices alerting property owners their unpaid taxes are to be offered for sale, which would put a lien against their properties. It is the first step in a process that can end with a property owner losing their home, business or land. Besides the mailings, the Treasurer’s Office published lists of properties with delinquencies tax lists in local newspapers. Payment can be made in five ways: • Online for free at cookcountytreasurer.com • In person at any Chase Bank location in Illinois. • In person at any of more than 100 community banks where you have an account • By mail • In person at the Treasurer’s Office Homeowners also can use the website to make sure they are receiving exemptions for which they qualify. Examples include the Homeowner, Senior Citizen and Senior Freeze exemptions. Investors buy delinquent tax debt during the Annual Tax Sale. The Annual Tax Sale does not involve the sale of actual properties. By law, the Treasurer’s Office cannot and does not give legal advice related to tax sales. You are strongly advised to seek an attorney’s advice relating to any sale of your taxes. If your taxes are sold your options include redeeming your taxes, seeking a Sale-in-Error Declaration or filing a statutory “Redemption Under Protest.”

MASSACHUSETTS- An engineer from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has developed an innovative vibrating and ingestible capsule with the potential to create a sensation of fullness, fooling the brain into perceiving it’s time to stop eating. This advancement could eventually contribute to the treatment of obesity. The ingestible capsule induces vibrations within the stomach, activating stretch receptors that typically signal when the stomach is distended, creating a deceptive feeling of fullness. In experiments involving animals given the capsule 20 minutes before meals, researchers observed a significant release of satiety-signaling hormones and a subsequent 40% reduction in food intake. Lead author Shriya Srinivasan, a former MIT graduate and current assistant professor of bioengineering at Harvard University, suggested that individuals aiming to lose weight or regulate appetite could take the capsule before each meal. She highlighted the potential of this approach to minimize side effects compared to other pharmacological treatments. The study, published in the journal Science Advances, outlines the mechanism by which the vibrating capsule activates stretch receptors in the stomach, creating a false sense of distension that influences hormones and eating patterns. The capsule, approximately the size of a multivitamin, contains a vibrating element powered by a small silver oxide battery. Once in the stomach, acidic gastric fluids dissolve a gelatinous membrane covering the capsule, completing the electronic circuit and activating the vibrating motor. During animal studies, the researchers observed hormone release patterns resembling those after a meal, even during periods of fasting when the device was vibrating. The vibrating pill not only decreased appetite by 40% but also slowed weight gain in treated animals. Notably, the study found no indications of obstruction, perforation, or adverse effects while the pill was in the animals’ digestive tracts. Srinivasan emphasized the cost-effectiveness of manufacturing MIT capsules compared to expensive treatments like GLP-1 agonists that require injections, making this innovation potentially accessible to a broader population.

Indian-origin MIT engineer’s inhalable sensors to detect lung cancer early

D

HiIndia Newsdesk

iagnosing lung cancer could become as easy as inhaling nanoparticle sensors and then taking a urine test that reveals whether a tumour is present, according to a Indian-origin engineer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the US. The new diagnostic is based on nanosensors that can be delivered by an inhaler or a nebulizer. If the sensors encounter cancer-linked proteins in the lungs, they produce a signal that accumulates in the urine, where it can be detected with a simple paper test strip. This approach could potentially replace or supplement the current gold standard for diagnosing lung cancer, low-dose computed tomography (CT). It could have an especially significant impact in low- and middle-income countries that don’t have widespread availability of CT scanners, according to the research published in the journal Science Advances. “Around the world, cancer is going to become more and

more prevalent in low- and middle-income countries. The epidemiology of lung cancer globally is that it’s driven by pollution and smoking, so we know that those are settings where accessibility to this kind of technology could have a big impact,” said Sangeeta Bhatia, Professor of Health Sciences and Technology and of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at MIT. “We were really pushing this assay to be point-ofcare available in a low-resource setting, so the idea was to not do any sample processing, not do any amplification, just to be able to put the sample right on the paper and read it out in 20 minutes,” Bhatia said. The researchers tested their diagnostic system in mice that are genetically engineered to develop lung tumours similar to those seen in humans. The sensors were administered 7.5 weeks after the tumours started to form, a time point that would likely correlate with stage 1 or 2 cancer in humans. In their first set of experiments in the mice, the researchers measured the levels of 20 different sensors designed to detect different proteases. Using a machine learning algorithm to analyse those results, the researchers identified a combination of just four sensors that was predicted to give accurate diagnostic results. They then tested that combination in the mouse model and found that it could accurately detect early-stage lung tumours. For use in humans, it’s possible that more sensors might be needed to make an accurate diagnosis, but that could be achieved by using multiple paper strips, each of which detects four different DNA barcodes, the researchers said.

Medicines in Canada can be nearly half the price of US counterparts and some drugs cost almost $400 a pill in Florida. The FDA's decision could open the door for other states to follow suit. The major policy shift overrides decades of opposition from the US pharmaceutical industry. The industry's major lobbying group has already indicated it will try to intervene. Florida estimates the programme, which allows the import of certain prescription drugs used to treat conditions such as HIV/AIDS, diabetes, hepatitis C and mental illness, will save state taxpayers up to $150m (£118m) a year. The sky-high costs of prescription drugs have been an ongoing political issue in the US, where prices are among the highest in the world.

An expert microbiologist has hailed the discovery of a potential new class of antibiotics that could treat lethal hospital infections as "very exciting". The new compound, zosurabalpin, worked "extremely well" in test-tubes and mice, Global Antibiotic Research and Development Partnership scientific director Prof Laura Piddock said. The research offered "definite hope" for other hard-to-treat infections, she told BBC Radio 4's Today programme. It is published in the journal Nature. US researchers focused on finding a new way to treat infections caused by the carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (Crab) bacterium. The organism, classed a "priority-one critical pathogen" by the World Health Organization, can cause very serious invasive blood and chest infections in critically ill hospital patients.

New York: (IANS) Being an early riser could increase the risk for having anorexia nervosa -- an eating disorder characterised by low weight, food restriction, body image disturbance, fear of gaining weight. The study found that having anorexia nervosa could lead to an earlier wake time. It also revealed a link between anorexia nervosa and insomnia risk. Published in JAMA Network Open, the study showed anorexia nervosa is based on rising early, unlike many other disorders that tend to be evening-based such as depression, binge eating disorder and schizophrenia. Previous research has suggested a possible connection between eating disorders and the body’s internal clock, or circadian clock, which controls a wide range of biological functions such as sleep and affects nearly every organ in the body. In the new study, an international team

of researchers led by investigators at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), found a two-way association between genes associated with anorexia nervosa and genes associated with morning chronotype (waking early and going to bed early). When they further assessed the insomnia connection by developing a “genetic risk score” for anorexia nervosa, the scientists found that the genetic risk score was indeed associated with higher insomnia risk. “Our findings implicate anorexia nervosa as a morning disorder in contrast to most other evening-based psychiatric diseases and support the association between anorexia nervosa and insomnia as seen in earlier studies,” said Hassan S Dashti, an assistant investigator in the Department of Anesthesia, Critical Care and Pain Medicine at MGH and an assistant professor of anaesthesia at Harvard Medical School.

Washington:(IANS) Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) recommended by physicians for curing Covid-19 has been linked to nearly 17,000 deaths, according to a new study as quoted by media reports. A new study conducted by French researchers has found that nearly 17,000 people across six countries may have died after being prescribed hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) while hospitalised with illness from March to July 2020 during the first wave of Covid-19, Newsweek reported. During the Covid-19 pandemic, former US President Donald Trump urged Americans to take hydroxychloroquine (HCQ), an anti-malaria medicine that is also often used to cure rheumatoid arthritis and lupus, claiming that he himself had been taking the "miracle" drug. The research published in the February issue of Biomedicine & Pharmacotherapy shows that increase in the number of deaths was driven by side effects like heart arrhythmia and muscle weakness. The countries studied were the US, Turkey, Belgium, France, Spain and Italy, Newsweek reported.

New Delhi: (IANSlife) As the calendar turns a fresh page and we welcome the start of a new chapter of our lives, it’s a great time to introspect the past and set new goals for the future. The beginning of the year does not only signify a date change but also a symbolic opportunity for renewal and commitment to one's well-being. As we usher into 2024 it's time to grab the moment and find the path to set our intentional goals to manage your diabetes this year. Dr. Prashanth Subramaniam, Head of Medical Affairs, South Asia, Korea and Taiwan, Diabetes Care, Abbott says, “In 2024, people with diabetes must pledge to commit to managing their condition well. Insufficient monitoring limits the available data, making it challenging to make informed decisions based on actionable insights. Therefore, people living with diabetes must promise themselves that they will regularly monitor their glucose levels, make lifestyle modifications, and try their best to stick to goals. Many new technologies will help support these goals. For example, continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) devices that are compatible with smartphones can help you stay on top of your glucose management even while on the go.” An expert recommends five resolutions to make in 2024 to control diabetes:

Prioritize strategic meal planning:

As we usher into 2024 it's time to grab the moment and find the path to set our intentional goals to manage your diabetes this year.

It's important to have a plan in place for what you are going to eat throughout the day. Always try to choose foods that have a lower calorie count. Pick foods that won’t increase your blood sugar levels drastically. It’s advisable to consume small portions of tempting food over a period to fill the cravings

Keep your body moving:

It's important to prioritize physical activity for maintaining good health, but it's also crucial to keep it gentle and avoid overexertion. Simple workouts like walking or yoga can be effective. Make sure to wear appropriate clothes and footwear during the holidays to keep your body in check. If you notice any abnormalities on your skin, it's best to consult a doctor right away to ensure proper care and treatment.

Know your numbers:

It is extremely important to keep a consistent check on your blood sugar levels. Real-time monitoring can be done through CGM tools like Freestyle libre. Try to stay in that sweet spot of 70 to 180 mg/ dl for most of the day, preferably

around 17 hours out of the day. By doing this, you can effectively manage your diabetes. That way, you're the boss of your diabetes, not the other way around.

Regulate your sleep cycle:

We often disrupt our sleeping routine due to bad habits or work. However, getting adequate hours of good-quality sleep is crucial in maintaining good health. It also helps to avoid sleep deprivation, which can negatively impact your hunger or craving levels. Additionally, sleep plays a vital role in supporting metabolism and regulating blood glucose levels, which is essential when managing diabetes

Stress management:

When you are stressed, your body produces stress hormones that boost your blood sugar levels and can cause insulin resistance. Over time, this can raise your blood pressure and increase your chances of developing heart disease. To ease your stress, try engaging in fun activities like listening to music, yoga or dance. Additionally, spending time with loved ones or discussing what you are going through with a professional could ease stress levels.
