74th Republic Day Celebration At Vaishnav Temple, New York
New Delhi: IANS) Two India-born mathematicians in the US and Canada are among the 106 recipients of the prestigious Padma Awards, one of the highest civilian honours of the country, announced on the eve of Republic Day.
Indian-American S.R. Srinivasa Varadhan has been honoured with the Padma Vibhushan and Indo-Canadian Sujatha Ramdorai received the Padmi Shri for their stellar contributions in the field of science and engineering.
Born in Chennai on January 2, 1940, Srinivasa Varadhan is known for his fundamental contributions to probability theory.
The Mathematics professor was awarded the 2007 Abel Prize by the Norwegian Academy of Sciences and Letters “for his fundamental contributions to probability theory and in particular for creating a unified theory of large deviations”.
Armed with a master’s degree (1960) from the University of Madras, Varadhan earned his doctorate (1963) from the Indian Statistical Institute in Calcutta. Associated with the University of British Columbia, Canada, Sujatha Ramdorai is an algebraic number theorist known for her work on the Iwasawa theory.
New 1,809 COVID Cases, 10 Deaths: NJ Reports
JERSEY CITY, NJ- New Jersey health officials on Thursday reported another 1,809 COVID-19 cases and 10 confirmed deaths as the state has now surpassed 10,000 fatalities for residents and staff of long-term care facilities.
The statewide rate of transmission was 0.79 for the fourth day in a row, officials reported Thursday. A transmission rate of 1 means the number of cases have leveled off, while anything below 1 means the outbreak is declining.

The event started with an Indian and American Flag parade with all the dignitaries, trusteestrustees, and executive committee members of VTNY and GSNY and fellow Indians joining the march. Kumar Mathuria, Secretary of VTNY welcomed everyone. Thereafter, Jaymin Shah, President of VTNY, Anil Shah, Chairman of VTNY, Harshad (Pakaji) Patel, President of GSNY and Co-Chairman of VTNY, Diyesh Tripathi, Program Manager of GSNY and Jignesh Gandhi, Jt. Secretary of VTNY introduced and felicitated the sponsor and chief guests of the event.
