US winter storm grounds 2,300 flights, leaves thousands without power

In Texas, more than 3,50,000 customers were without power Wednesday afternoon as trees — heavy with ice — buckled onto power lines, according to PowerOutage, a website that tracks utility reports.

Adeadly storm system lashed a large swath of the southern US with bands of sleet and snow for a third day on Wednesday, grounding an additional 2,300 flights, leaving hundreds of thousands without power, forcing school closures and making already treacherous driving conditions worse. Watches and warnings about wintry conditions were issued for an area stretching West Texas’ border with Mexico through Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana, and into western Tennessee and northern Mississippi. Several rounds of mixed precipitation, including

freezing rain and sleet, were in store for many areas throughout the day, meaning some places could get hit multiple times, forecasters said.

“It actually looks like it’s going to be getting worse again across Texas, it is already a pretty big area of freezing rain across western and southwestern Texas,” said Bob Oravec, a lead National Weather Service forecaster based in Camp Springs, Maryland. Oravec said the icy weather is expected to move northeastward across parts of Oklahoma and Arkansas into western Tennessee and northern Mississippi before it starts to

dissipate. “By later in the day on Thursday it should be pretty much done, and all the … precipitation will be well downstream across parts of the South and where it will be mostly heavy rain,” Oravec said.

By late Wednesday morning, 2,300 US flights had been cancelled, including three-quarters of the flights at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport and more than two-thirds at Dallas Love Field, according to the flight tracking service FlightAware.com. Dallas-Forth Worth International is American Airlines’ biggest hub, and Love Field is a major base for Southwest Airlines.

Five Mounties charged over indigenous man’s death

Five members of Canada’s federal police force are facing charges in connection with the fatal arrest of an indigenous man nearly six years ago. Dale Culver died in police custody on 18 July 2017 at the age of 35.

The five officers are members of the Prince George Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). The charges were filed by prosecutors in British Columbia.

Two of the Mounties are charged with manslaughter, while the other three are charged with obstructing justice.

“The President believes this initiative is key for the US and India to create a democratic technology ecosystem and reinforces our democratic values and our democratic institutions. So, we see this as an incredibly important initiative and a partnership that we have with India,” White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters at her daily news conference.

Wednesday’s search was the latest in a series carried out at various locations, after classified documents were found at the Penn Biden Center, an office space that Biden had used when he was Vice President, in Washington D.C. last November, which was not made public at the time, the BBC reported. More documents were discovered at another of Biden’s homes in Wilmington, Delaware, in searches conducted in December 2022 and last month. Ukraine war: Russia planning 24 February offensive, Ukrainian defence minister says

Ukraine’s defence minister has said Russia is preparing a major new offensive, and warned that it could begin as soon as 24 February.

Oleksii Reznikov said Moscow had amassed thousands of troops and could “try something” to mark the anniversary of the initial invasion last year.

The attack would also mark Russia’s Defender of the Fatherland Day on 23 February, which celebrates the army.

Covid in China: Officials say current wave is ‘coming to an end’

Chinese health officials say the country’s current wave of Covid-19 infections is “coming to an end”. The number of severe Covid cases and deaths is trending downward, the country’s Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said in a report. It also said there had been “no obvious rebound” during Lunar New Year holidays last week, where millions reunited for family gatherings. There have long been questions raised about China’s Covid reporting. But experts say the decline reported now corresponds with the expected timing of an end to this major wave.

Cardinal George Pell’s funeral sees mourners and protesters clash

Mourners and protesters have gatheredand clashed - at the funeral for Cardinal George Pell in his Australian homeland. The Catholic Cardinal died in Rome last month, aged 81, after complications from hip surgery.

Formerly one of the Pope’s top aides, Cardinal Pell was Australia’s highestranking Catholic. But his public image was tainted by unproven allegations he concealed and committed child sexual abuse. Inside St Mary’s Cathedral, where Cardinal Pell served as Archbishop of Sydney for over a decade, dignitaries including former Prime Ministers John Howard and Tony Abbott filled pews.Noticeably absent were Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and New South Wales Premier Dominic Perrottet - himself a devout Catholic.

Meanwhile, three people have died in an attack on the city of Kramatorsk. Eight others were wounded in the city in Donetsk region after a Russian missile struck a residential building, the provincial governor said. The toll is expected to rise as rescuers comb through the wreckage.

“The only way to stop Russian terrorism is to defeat it,” Mr Zelensky wrote on social media about the attack. “By tanks. Fighter jets. Long-range missiles.”

Philippine earthquake revised down to magnitude 6

Ukraine has recently renewed calls for fighter jets to help protect itself from air attacks after Germany, the US and the UK agreed to send them tanks.

Mr Reznikov said Moscow had mobilised some 500,000 troops for the potential offensive. In September, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a general mobilisation of some 300,000 conscripted troops, which he said was necessary to ensure the country’s “territorial integrity”.

Half a million UK workers strike over pay

Manila: (IANS) The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology revised the magnitude of an earthquake down to 6, which rattled the southern Philippines on Wednesday. The institute first reported the magnitude of the quake as 6.1. It said the quake, which occurred at 6:44 p.m. local time, hit at a

depth of 11 km, about 14 km northeast of New Bataan town in Davao De Oro province, Xinhua news agency reported. An updated report said the earthquake hit at a depth of 27 km, about 12 km northeast of New Bataan town. The institute said that the tectonic quake will trigger aftershocks and cause damage. There were no initial reports of damage or casualties. The institute said that the quake was also felt strongly in Davao City and many areas in Mindanao, the Philippines’ secondlargest island. The Philippines has frequent seismic activity due to its location along the Pacific “Ring of Fire”.

N.Korea warns of ‘toughest reaction’ to US military drills with S.Korea

London: (IANS) Up to half a million British teachers, university staff, train drivers and civil servants reportedly went on strike on Wednesday in the largest coordinated action for years amid lengthy disputes over pay. Teacher members of the National Education Union in England and Wales walked out in the first of several days, affecting 23,400 schools, Xinhua news agency reported. There is a crisis of recruitment and retention within the school system, and a decade of falling pay is a key reason for this move and needs to be addressed by the government, the union said.

Around 70,000 staff at 150 universities across Britain were on strike in the first of 18 days in disputes over pay, working conditions and pensions, and their action will impact 2.5 million students through February and March, the University and College Union said.

Seoul,: (IANS) North Korea said on Thursday it will take the “toughest reaction” to the US’ move to expand joint military exercises with South Korea. The North’s warning came US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin visited Seoul earlier this week for talks with his South Korean counterpart and said there would be more deployments of strategic assets, including F-22 and F-35 jets, to Seoul in order to deter Pyongyang’s evolving military threats, reports Yonhap News Agency. Pyongyang’s Foreign Ministry claimed the US has been driving the security situation on the Korean Peninsula toward an “extreme red-line” and is pushing to spur further tensions through joint military drills of larger scale and scope with South Korea. “This is a vivid expression of the US dangerous scenario which will result in turning the Korean Peninsula into a huge war arsenal and a more critical war zone,” the Ministry said in a statement carried by the North’s official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

North Korea will “take the toughest reaction” to any military action by the US under the principle of “nuke for nuke and an all-out confrontation for an all-out confrontation”, it added.

The North said it is ready to counter any military challenges from the US with the “most overwhelming nuclear force,” while stressing it is not interested in any dialogue with Washington as long as the latter pursues a “hostile policy”.

Earlier on Thursday, South Korea and the US staged combined air drills, involving B-1B strategic bombers, as well as F-22 and F-35B stealth fighters, from the US Air Force, in a show of Washington’s “will and capabilities” to provide credible extended deterrence against North Korea’s military threats.

Baghdad,: (IANS) Iraq exported about 101.24 million barrels of crude oil in January, generating $7.69 billion in revenue, the country’s oil ministry announced on Wednesday.

The average price for Iraqi crude oil in January was $75.96 per barrel, the ministry said in a statement, citing statistics from the State Organization for Marketing of Oil, Xinhua news agency reported. About 98.46 million barrels were exported from oil fields in central and southern Iraq via the port of Basra, while more than 2 million barrels from the northern province of Kirkuk via the Turkish port of Ceyhan on the Mediterranean, the statement said. The Washington State Democratic Party has chosen Shasti Conrad as its new chair, making her the youngest and first IndianAmerican woman to serve as a state party chair anywhere in the country

Washington, Jan 30 (IANS) The Washington State Democratic Party has chosen Shasti Conrad as its new chair, making her the youngest and first Indian-American woman to serve as a state party chair anywhere in the country.

Conrad, 38, a political consultant and former leader of the King County Democrats, takes over from Tina Podlodowski, who had served as party chair since 2017.

“I’m so honored to have the opportunity to serve as Chair of our state party and build on the outstanding success Washington Democrats have earned at the ballot box for the last six years,” she said in a statement.

“I’m excited to work with Democratic leaders from every community to build an unprecedented field operation that will carry the message of how Washington Democrats are delivering for working families to each and every voter.”

London: (IANS) International students, including Indians, in the UK are likely to be allowed to work for longer hours and take up more part time jobs to plug labour shortages in various sectors across the country, according to a report. Presently, foreign students in the UK, who number around 6,80,000, are allowed to work for a maximum of 20 hours a week during term time.

However, discussions have begun within the government to raise this cap to 30 hours or remove it entirely in a bid to boost its economy, The Times reported. International students made up 476,000 of the 1.1 million migrants who arrived in the country last year.

Of these, India became the largest source of students with 161,000 students, including 33,240 dependents, coming to the UK last year.

There are 1.3 million empty posts, almost half a million more than before the pandemic, and according to Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, “businesses are crying out for workers”.

London: (IANS) A British-Indian man has been found guilty of bludgeoning his father to death with a champagne bottle in a drunken rage two years ago. Deekan Singh Vig, 54, murdered his 86-year-old father Arjan Singh Vig on the evening of October 30, 2021 at their family home in Southgate, north London.

Police had found Deekan naked and surrounded by about 100 bottles of champagne, including a blood-stained Veuve Clicquot and Bollinger, The Independent reported.

He reportedly told the police: “I killed my dad. I hit him over the head with

Prosecutor Deanna Heer KC, told the court that the victim was hit repeatedly in the face and head with a full bottle of champagne causing extensive injuries and almost immediate death.

A post-mortem examination identified injuries “entirely consistent with an assault with a full champagne bottle”, Heer told the court.

Deekan, who helped his father in the family business, had developed a taste for alcohol during the Covid lockdown. Police uncovered 100 bottles of champagne, 10 Amazon delivery boxes of whisky bottles, and an empty bottle of Talisker Scotch on the bed at the crime scene.

Deekan, who had moved to Britain from Uganda along with his family, claimed he had autism and that his father had attacked him.

He also admitted to drinking 500 ml of whisky a few hours before the murder. Judge Angela Rafferty on Friday adjourned Deekan’s sentencing until February 10 and remanded him into custody.

Conrad assumes leadership of an organisation whose voter contact operation has played a key role in Democrats’ statewide electoral dominance since the 2016 election, the Washington State Democratic Party said in a statement. She has worked on political campaigns since 2008, when she got her start as a field organizer working for then-Senator Obama’s primary campaign.

Since then, she’s worked on three more presidential races and concluded the 2020 cycle as Senator Bernie Sanders’ National Director of Surrogates.

Locally, Conrad served as Chair of the Martin Luther King, Jr County Democrats from 2018 to 2022, where she raised nearly $300,000 for a county party organization mired in debt when she first took office. Under her leadership, the King County Democrats’ field operation helped flip six city councils and a County Council seat held by Republicans for 20 years, the party statement read. “After six years serving as the Chair of the Washington Democrats, I’m thrilled to pass on the torch to my friend Shasti Conrad.

Jagan clears uncertainty over Andhra capital to attract investors

Realising that the continuing ambiguity on the capital may hit the flow of investment, he made the key announcement before the captains of industry at an event organised as a curtain raiser for the global investors’ summit, scheduled to be held in Visakhapatnam on March 3-4. Political observers say this clarity was required to invite the investors to the state. Critics have been targetting the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) government headed by Jagan Mohan Reddy over lack of clarity on the state capital.

Though it was in 2019 that Jagan Mohan Reddy had mooted the idea of three state capitals in tune with his policy for decentralisation of development, the

government could not make headway in developing Visakhapatnam as administrative capital due to legal hurdles and resistance from farmers of Amaravati region.

Ahead of the investors’ summit in Visakhapatnam, the Chief Minister sent a clear message to the investors that the port city will be the state capital.

“Here I am to invite you to Visakhapatnam, which is going to be our capital, in the

days to come. I myself would also be shifting over to Visakhapatnam in the months to come as well,” said Jagan Mohan Reddy, who is currently running the government from Amaravati. He did not mention three capitals, which sparked a debate in some quarters on whether he has given up the idea of trifurcation and will have only one capital. However, ruling party leaders say to avoid any confusion, the Chief Minister did not refer to three capitals. YSRCP leaders say the government remained committed to its policy of three capitals. Kurnool will be developed as the judicial capital while Amaravati will serve as the legislative capital. Since Visakhapatnam will be the nerve centre of the administration, Jagan Mohan Reddy spoke only about the port city.

Hyderabad: CV Anand inaugurates sports ground

Hyderabad: Fluctuating weather conditions during the last leg of this year’s winter season in Hyderabad and surrounding regions has led to a significant increase in cases of viral fevers.

He said that of the 2.67 crore electricity consumers in the state, 2.42 crore have already linked their Aadhaar number with the electricity number. The minister said that these consumers include domestic, huts, agricultural, handloom, and power loom weavers.

Long-lasting Impact & Life Transformations

“I have been smoking cigarettes for the last 30 years. Now, after seeing this exhibition on deaddiction, I resolve to quit my addiction of smoking. I will also inspire others about the ill-effects of addiction.”

“I personally wish that in order to avoid any future problems in my family, to strengthen the family unity, I would like to start ghar sabha at least twice a week.”

“After seeing the Bal Nagari, I pledge to go to the mandir everyday, to reduce my use of the Internet and my phone, and bow down to my parents everyday.”

“I have a 20 year addiction of chewing tobacco, today I have been inspired to give it up”

“After seeing the Buzo show, I also felt that my parents are opposing me, while actually they are looking out for the best for me. I have learned and decided that I will try to listen to all that my parents advise me.”

“The poor children who are unable to afford education...I want to provide them free education. This is the inspiration I’ve received from here.”

“To experience something like this we would have to go out of the country and spend thousands of rupees to see, but even then we wouldn’t get the opportunity to learn the values presented here.”

“After coming here I have taken a pledge to conserve water and electricity”

“There is a lesson in every single item that is seen at the nagar”

“After seeing the Mere Bharat Mahan show, I have taken a pledge of not throwing waste here and there”

“Today we visited the glow garden and in that I saw the story of the ants holding the leaf and it really brought this message of unity into my life.”

“One thing that I am definitely taking from here is that at least we all will stay together, will eat together and will do ghar sabha.”

“I’ve had this addiction since the last 40-45 years but to not cause more grievance to my children and my family, I’ve decided that today onward, in the memory of Pramukh Swami Maharaj, I will quit this addiction.”

Long-lasting Impact & Life Transformations

Rakeshbhai Ramanbhai Patel

Lavarpur, Gujarat

“I was addicted to alcohol since 1992. For the past 1015 years, it became quite extreme. I ended up selling 3 vighas (1.2 acres) of my property to fund my addiction. Every morning we would have arguments during tea, where my mother would yell from the other room saying he does not want tea, he wants alcohol. So let him go otherwise he will continue arguing. I would pass by the nagar from time to time so I would see people working here and it has become the talk of the town. The Festival of Pramukh Swami Maharaj is going to be celebrated there. People were registering for seva, so for those who would like to register can. But I was not a satsangi, so did not know whom to contact to register. I saw a car that was regularly coming to the site. It would come in the morning and leave in the evening. They offered to take me to the site if I wanted to join. So once during the month of Bhadarva, I joined. It was extremely hot, so I left.

One night, I felt as if someone was waking me. I packed my bags to which my wife asked what is this. I replied, don’t worry, I have to leave in the morning. Next morning, I left without telling anywhere where I was going. Upon leaving, per my routine, I was walking towards my regular place (where I would drink), but then I changed my route and instead came here (the nagar). My regular place was on the opposite side of the road. I didn’t go there, meaning I didn’t go to drink alcohol. I came straight here. It felt as if someone had pulled my hand and brought me here. I then registered to do seva for 15 days, where my seva started in the landscaping department.

Over time, I became more involved where I became attached and did not feel like leaving. I have been doing seva for over 4 months. I was freed from my addiction to alcohol and everything fell into place. Such deep rooted addiction could never be uprooted without the inspiration of Bapa. In order to free myself from this addiction, I had gathered 2 lakh rupees so I could be admitted to Kaneria Hospital. But upon hearing about this celebration for Pramukh Swami Maharaj Centennial Celebrations, I told my wife to keep this money on the side – that it will come into use. I will ask for it if I need it. After coming here, I saw how the volunteers are serving without any addictions. Upon seeing their affection and with Swamibapa’s inspiration, I began doing seva, puja, tilak chandlo –all of which I had despised as one time. After coming here, I was inspired to bathe daily and do puja. There is something about Pramukh Swami, that the thought of alcohol does not even enter my mind. Now, I’m embarrassed even talking about it. Today, I feel that my past life was a waste, and this is my new birth!”

Vraj Prajapati Piplag, Gujarat

Vraj found a bag in Bal Nagari and had called the person who lost it to personally give it to him. Any 18-year-old would be tempted to keep the cell phone, money, etc. “But I didn’t really have any such thoughts. Instead, I thought whoever’s bag this was, obtained his money through hard-earned means. The inspiration to not take the money was from Pramukh Swami. He used to say to never take anyone’s belongings, to not wrong anyone and to never steal. So, this has been ingrained in my mind. These values have been instilled in me by attending Bal Mandal sabha.”

VP & Engineering Fellow at Google

“I think it’s this truly wishing for an amazing betterment of every person, and hence by extension, society, and then just working selflessly towards it is what [Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s] life exemplifies to me and is evident through what is shown here in various exhibits and shows as well... If you want to experience a truly integrated version of spirituality – that integrates across ages, facets of life, family, profession, spirituality – this is a very unique and welldone combination of all of them. It’s bound to get a person to think more deeply about things.”

Shri Akshay Kothari Co-Founder & COO at Notion

“I think it’s really inspiring to see how it all came together ... something like 80,000 volunteers giving their most precious time. It’s not only about your own happiness ... this is one of the key lessons I am taking away -- the acts that you have rather than the words you speak ... to respect him and follow the life he lived, and do those acts yourself.”

“Swamiji says about spending time with your family, being connected with each other. That will bring about peace and happiness and effectively prosperity in your lives, professionally and otherwise. We all at some point know what the right things are to do, we lose track of that, and festivals such as these will be those reminders.”

This festival is great not just because of its scale and beauty, but because of the experience of divinity and grand vision behind it, where everyone can learn about our heritage, history, faith, and values. Pramukh Swami Maharaj taught me that the greatest goal in life is to serve others, and he inspired me to serve till my last breath.”

“This amazing festival site should be a case study for students of management. This festival site not only gives one the experience of peace and divinity, but it provides the esoteric wisdom of the Vedas, Upanishads and Hindu culture in a way that the simplest folk can understand.”

“The world called Pramukh Swami Maharaj ‘the People’s guru’ and ‘the global guru’ because he had traveled to over 50 countries, visited more than 17,000 cities and villages, established more than 1,200 mandirs, and wrote more than 750,000 letters. He met global leaders and kings, but also ordinary and poor people whom he embraced. As a result of his efforts, BAPS is taking India and the world forward.”

Service & Sacrifice of Volunteers

The backbone of the Pramukh Swami Maharaj Nagar is its dedicated force of over 80,000 volunteers and hundreds of swamis. These volunteers and swamis form a diverse group of professionals and skilled workers who come from different geographical,

academic, and social backgrounds, resulting in an effective mosaic of leaders and workers. Out of the thousands of volunteers serving in this Pramukh Swami Nagar, many have professional careers and businesses, while others have left such positions to

serve full-time by admirably balancing their personal, family, social, professional, and volunteer duties. These volunteers have been overseeing physical service, planning, management, and implementation in almost 45 departments in the Pramukh Swami Nagar.

Rajniben Zala from Surat was financially not well and the Pandemic made things worse for them. Over and above that, she had to undergo an operation which increased her financial burden. She used to do tailoring odd jobs to make ends meet. She wanted to serve in the Shatabdi Mahotsav so she took a loan of Rs. 20,000 and came to the festival grounds for her seva.

Pujaben Bharucha of Bharuch has two daughters aged 3 and 10. Her mother-in-law has had knee operations 4 times and has great difficulty moving even at home. Pujaben wanted to come to serve but how could she in such circumstances? Her mother-inlaw told her to serve at the Shatabdi Mahotsav. She assured her that she should not worry about her daughters or all the other household jobs. It was very painful for her but she motivated her daughter-in-law for this once in a lifetime seva opportunity. Salutations to such an understanding mother-in-law.

Rajvirbhai Parmar, age 14 had seva in the Bujo show. He was part of the Adivasi dance (ethnic dance). The dance involved carrying a spear. Once he hurt his leg with the spear during the dance. He was taken to the doctor who bandaged the wound and advised him to rest for two days. Yet Rajvir continued his performance with the bandage. His zeal was an inspirational to all.

Aaradhnaben Patel of Vadodara runs a small restaurant and lives in a rented apartment. She served for 20 days in the Pramukh Swami Maharaj Shatabdi Mahotsav. She learned during her service period that the husbands of her colleagues had a hard time cooking and managing their meals back home. Once she returned, she singlehandedly cooked meals for the family members of the volunteers serving in the Mahotsav. She also delivered food at the homes of people who could not come to eat at her place. Salutations to Aaradhnaben for going beyond her assigned seva and serving others.

Sanjaybhai Patel of Jharola came to serve at the Pramukh Swami Maharaj Shatabdi Mahotsav in Ahmedabad for a day with his neighbor. Looking at the enthusiasm and sacrifice of the volunteers on the festival grounds, he joined for 15 days of seva and then, after 15 days, decided to stay in seva till the end of the festival. He had a habit of drinking alcohol. He would

Kushal Maltiya used to live with his maternal uncle and study in Poona. He came to the Mahotsav on his uncle’s insistence to serve for 7 days. He was allocated seva in the Yagna Dept. One day he suddenly told a swami that he wanted to commit suicide due to his failures in his studies. He also told the swami that he drinks alcohol and smokes regularly. His lonely life, shorttempered nature, addictions and failures had made him depressed to the extent that he wanted to end his life. On getting guidance and blessings from senior swamis, he gave up his thought of ending his life.

Jitenbhai Patel had joined seva in the landscape department. He owns a RO plant company and employs 20 people. He left it to his employees to handle and came for seva. Earlier, he used to drink alcohol of Rs. 1000 daily. After coming for seva, he realized that if I can stay without alcohol for 15 days, then I will be able to live with even longer and can give up this addiction. He gave up his addiction. His family was very happy to know this. Thousands of families have received the gift of joy due to Shatabdi Mahotsav.

Ramanbhai Patel of Surendranagar has lost his one hand but his enthusiasm for seva has not been lost. He was allocated seva in the transport department at the Pramukh Swami Maharaj Shatabdi Mahotsav. Despite his physical challenge, may it be scorching sun or heavy rains he continued his seva at his allocated parking spot nonstop. He would ensure that all vehicles are parked properly. When asked if he finds it difficult to do his seva with just one hand, he said with great enthusiasm that, ‘our physical troubles are no match to the troubles faced by Pramukh Swami Maharaj.

Shauryarajsinh Solanki, age 13, volunteered at the Bal Nagari (Children’s Cultural Adventureland) in the housekeeping department at the Pramukh Swami Maharaj Shatabdi Mahotsav in Ahmedabad. On his first day of seva, he hurt his hand while playing and had a hairline fracture. The doctor advised him to rest at home. This disappointed him immensely. He requested his parents and the doctor to allow him to continue his volunteer service. Upon getting their permission, he served with a plastered hand and completed his seva commitment.

consume Rs. 3000 worth of alcohol daily causing regular issues and fights at home. Fed up with the daily problems, his wife and daughter left him. After coming to Pramukh Swami Maharaj Nagar for seva, he gave up his alcohol addiction. When his wife and daughter came to know about this, they were very happy would go to joyously pick him up when his seva ends.

By the blessings of His Holiness Mahant Swami Maharaj and the Shatabdi seva, he could give up his addiction and saved his marital life. With the guidance of Swamis, he also started doing puja and resolved to stay away from all addictions for the rest of his life. Service & Sacrifice of Volunteers

Raj Patel, age 12 of Nadiad, served in the housekeeping department at the Bal Nagari. On Dec16, 2022, he found a silver bracelet. He immediately informed his caretaker and had it deposited at the lost and found office. All present appreciated his honesty. From expensive mobiles to wallets to jewelry, during the one-month festival, volunteers found numerous things which were returned to the owners.

Harsh Brahmbhatt of Toronto, Canada deeply desired to serve at the Shatabdi Mahotsav in Ahmedabad. His marriage was also planned around the same time as the festival. To serve in the festival, he postponed his wedding. He served for 2 months till the day before his marriage and served the guests to the best of his ability. His fiancée Rajal supported his decision and in an indirect way served at the festival.

Hasmukhbhai Darji, a tailor by profession, is very poor. His daughter is affected by polio and his wife is sick. His savings had been used to treat his wife. Despite all the issues, he came to the Shatabdi Mahotsav to serve. Without taking a single rupee, he stitched and fixed the clothes of the volunteers serving at the festival. His goal was only to serve and he did so for four months!!

Himanshubhai Kariya owns a pharmaceutical company. He was allocated seva in the construction department. During his seva, he learned that we were short on tractor drivers. He had never driven a tractor, and he had not been allocated this seva either but he thought that if I learned to drive a tractor, I could help the team better. So he hired a tutor and learned to drive the tractor in two days. Though this was not his skill, he adapted to the situation to serve better.

Darshan Patel, age 13 of Ahmedabad is a regular member of the children’s activities of BAPS. He knew that the centenary celebration is going to take place on a grand scale. He thought how I can contribute to it? He started saving his pocket money for a year, not using it on anything he would have liked to spend. Controlling his mind for his daily treats and wishes was not easy, but his desire to serve was such that he did not budge. He donated Rs. 15,000 of his pocket money to the Bal Nagari. Over and above this, he also served as the emcee for the show ‘The Jungle of Sheru.’

Manishaben Kanjariya of Surendranagar and her husband both were in seva at the Mahotsav. While they were in Ahmedabad, their house was burglarized. They had gold ornaments at their home. They prayed to God and Mahant Swami Maharaj. Upon going home, to their surprise, the thieves had broken their main door locks but missed the ornaments. Their valuable savings were intact. Their prayers were answered and were now convinced of what they had heard numerous times - ‘God always protects his devotees.’

Vishwaben Baldha, age 13, a student at the Randesan Girls School in Ahmedabad served in ‘Sea of Suvarna’ show. She wasn’t feeling well, but she still continued. When senior volunteers came to know about it, they enquired. Vishwa politely told them, ‘We have heard that Pramukh Swami went to devotees’ homes despite 102°F fever, so why can’t I continue?’. After the show, she vomited yet wanted to perform in the next show but was taken to the doctor and asked to rest. How can a 13 year have complete disregard for his body?

Priyankbhai Patodiya, finished his engineering and wanted to go to Canada for further studies. He got admission in Master degree course at Centennial College, Toronto, Canada. He had paid his first semester fees and was ready to go to Canada. But at that time there was a call for volunteers to serve at the festival. So Priyank decided to postpone his studies and serve at the Pramukh Swami Maharaj Shatabdi Mahotsav for six months. His family members asked him to serve for a month and go to Canada but he insisted on serving for six months. Finally, everyone agreed and his college too, agreed to use his paid fees when he comes to study in the next semester.

Anand Patni of Ahmedabad worked for Gujarat

First channel as a reporter. On December 21, 2022, he visited the Shatabdi Mahotsav with his family. In the Bal Nagari at the ‘Pledge Booth’, he made a pledge to touch his parents feet daily. He got a book titled ‘Let’s become an Ideal Child’ as a gift for taking the pledge. The next day he started to follow his pledge. On reading the book

he received, he showed a page on giving up addictions. He told his father, ‘if you don’t give up addictions, then I will not talk to you.’ Anand gave in to his persistent request and pledged to give up his addiction. The next day the child took the book to his school and told his classmates and teacher about it and the pledge he took. On Dec 22, 2022, Anandbhai came to

the Bal Nagari to take live coverage of the ‘Pledge Booth’. He was very impressed with the festival. For the last 15 years, he has been searching for a true Guru and his search finally ended here. He resolved to make Pramukh Swami and Mahant Swami as his guru. Pramukh Swami Maharaj Centennial Celebration was truly a festival of inspiration and transformation.

His Holiness Mahant Swami Maharaj

“Every second of his life, Pramukh Swami Maharaj worked for the upliftment of humanity. He did not just pay lip service to these values, but practiced them and inspired others to practice them. Despite a person’s flaws, Pramukh Swami looked at his virtue. He loved everyone, inspiring them to become better. Thus every individual he met improved their life. If we resolve to behave in this way, that will ensure society’s collective progress.”

‘I do roles that suit my age’

Raveena Tandon on the Padma Shri honour

For actor Raveena Tandon winning the Padma Shri was like a cherry on the top. She considers herself to be one of those lucky ones who has a huge body of commercial hits and has done realistic cinema at the same time whether it was Satta, Ghulam- E- Mustafa, or Shool. She is thankful that cinema is changing and there is room for experimentation for the craftsmen. On a lighter note, Raveena is happy that SRK’s Pathaan could bring people back to the theatres.

Excerpts from the interview:

Your first reaction to the Padma Shri honour…

The first person who informed me was actually the press. They said that the list is out and your name is there. This year for me was full of awards for KGF and Aranyak and each and every award that I have won for these two films from Filmfare to Dadasaheb Phalke International Film Festival Award, I thank God for it. And winning the Padma Shri was like a cherry on the top.

Woman’s roles changing and now actresses are getting to play their age and yet do an important role. What do you have to say about that?

What happened in the nineties was that everyone would stereotype you. I was one of those lucky ones who had a huge body of commercial hits and I did realistic cinema at the same time whether it was Satta, Ghulam- E- Mustafa, or Shool. Even Shool won the national award. Daman too won the National award. I have done a lot of films which were message oriented and plus my commercial films were also a big hit. I think some where I was able to strike a balance with both commercial and realistic cinemas. And I am eternally thankful to my audiences to accept me in both forms of cinema.

Another thing that I have noticed is that songs from films are

Kartik Aaryan turns producer with Shehzada

Adityanath says UP safe for investors, interacts with Bollywood members in Mumbai

Bollywood star Kartik Aaryan is set to make his production debut with his upcoming film Shehzada, the makers announced on Monday.

Produced by Bhushan Kumar, Allu Arvind and Aman Gill, the movie is the official Hindi adaptation of the 2020 Telugu action drama Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo starring Allu Arjun. The makers welcomed Aaryan, who also headlines the family action entertainer Shehzada, on board as producer.

“It’s been quite a joyride making this film with Kartik as an actor, but now it’s become even more exciting having Kartik on board as one of the producers of the film.

“Like us Kartik too believes in wide reaching films that appeal to the youngsters, families and masses, and Shehzada is meant for all of them, hence it made natural sense for him to pick this film for his debut as producer,” they said in a media statement.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday pitched his state as a safe investment destination and also interacted with prominent Bollywood personalities during his visit to Mumbai, where Maharashtra’s Opposition parties targeted him over his roadshow.

Adityanath assured industrialists of a strong law and order situation in Uttar Pradesh, devoid of fear and free of land mafia.

“You must have seen that before 2017, there used to be riots every other day, now the law and situation in the state is very strong. We formed an anti-land mafia task force and vacated over 64,000-hectare land from their clutches,” the chief minister said. The chief minister told investors that today no goon can collect tax from any businessman or contractor or harass them in Uttar Pradesh. “Even political donations cannot be taken forcibly,” he added. The chief minister is on an eight-city roadshow to promote the 3-day ‘UP Global Investor Summit 2023’ to be held in Lucknow from February 10-12

eternal. The songs became great hit. I am happy that my contribution to realistic cinema has been recognised and commercially I think I did well too.

Making a shift from commercial to realistic film… How did it happen?

It was a conscious effort. Unfortunately, in the nineties when you wanted to do realistic cinema and prove yourself as a craftsman people just remembered you for your songs. Finally, in 2000, I stopped signing those kinds of films and started concentrating on films that challenged me as an actor. It started with started with Shool, then there was Ghulam- E- Mustafa and the journey just continued. I told that I will do roles that suit my age and I simply started rejecting roles that didn’t challenge me. And thankfully cinema is changing and the web has brought about this change where people are actually looking at actors and the craft is not just dependent on a commercial box office outcome.

With Pathaan bringing back Bollywood its old glory, what do you have to say about that?

I am so happy that Pathaan could bring people back to the theatres. In fact, I tweeted ‘Hamara Karan Arjun aa Gaya’ (Our Karan and Arjun is back). I went for the 10 am show. It was a reason for the industry to rejoice again. And for SRK it was well deserved. He is such a wonderful person.

Last year we felt that Bollywood is losing its swag to South films… What is your take on that?

As far as South films are concerned we only get to know about the biggest hits. I am sure there must be at least five films that release every Friday, and it’s only the super hit films come to us and we celebrate them. We don’t get to know about the South films that didn’t do well. So, I think it is a little unfair to categorise it like that. Honestly, if you ask me cinema is one. I hate these names like Bollywood, Tollywood, Kollywood, Mollywood, Lollywood. I think it’s ridiculous.

Hollywood producer Jason Blum bets on RRR to win best film Oscar

Hollywood producer Jason Blum is confident that SS Rajamouli’s magnum opus RRR will bag the best picture trophy at the Oscars this year.

Blum, the founder of Hollywood studio Blumhouse that bankrolled Oscar-winning movies such as Get Out and BlacKkKlansman, predicted the film’s win in a Twitter post on Monday. “I’m going with RRR winning best pic. You heard it here first. Mark it down, please. If I’m right, I am awarding myself my own Oscar,” the producer wrote.

Nothing in life should come easily

It took 15-years for Pratik Gandhi to get a break in the Hindi film industry with Hansal Mehta’s Scam 1992. Gandhi believes that as an actor there are two phases in his life – one is pre-Scam and the other is post-scam. And both the phases have been equally enriching for him as a craftsman.

As Atithi Bhooto Bhava releases tomorrow, Firstpost catches up with him for an exclusive interview. He talks about the #BoycottBollywood culture and how Scam gave him the recognition as an actor.

On your role in Atithi Bhooto Bhava…

The character’s name is Shrikanth and he shares a love-hate relationship with his girlfriend. I play the role of a stand-up comedian who meets the ghost of his grandson from previous birth. Actor Jackie Shroff plays the role of a ghost, who refuses to leave his surroundings because of some unfinished business. My character takes an interesting turn when I meet Jackie Shroff.

Your journey in the entertainment industry…

I have been around for the last seventeen years now. Then Scam happened that helped my work reach a wider audience. But before that the journey was exciting too since I come from a theatre background. Nobody in my family was into full time acting. There are a lot of artists in my family, but nobody is a professional artist. So, I am the first person in my family to make a living out of art. Theatre taught me the craft so well that I used to look forward to going on stage and breathing with the audience. But at some point, it did reach a level of saturation. But theatre gave me the first stepping stone starting from doing a Gujarati film, ‘Wrong Side Raju’ and winning the national award.

The journey was very tough, not just tough. But it was enriching at the same time. I was forty when I got a break with Scam. Now when I look back and reflect, I feel whatever happened, it happened at the right time and for the best. One shouldn’t get anything in life easily. I value this time more because I got it it the harder way.

Vidya Balan

Every woman must acknowledge her body

Actor Vidya Balan has called upon every woman to acknowledge her body. The 44-year-old actor, who has essayed roles in more than 40 movies, was speaking at the 65th All India Congress of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in Kolkata on Thursday.

“A woman derives such a large part of her identity from her body. Yet we don’t want to acknowledge the body, we don’t want to acknowledge its desire and needs. We don’t take adequate care of it. Every woman must acknowledge every part of her body and nurture it,” Balan said. She said the onus of women’s health lies not only with her but also with her family.

“We keep talking about women’s health, but the onus does not lie just with her. Families need to invest in the health of their women. If we want to be a progressive and successful nation, we must invest in the health of women,” she said. Balan said there has been a lot of change in society with education and awareness, “but still we have a long way to go”.

“A small step will go a long way. When a woman visits a gynaecologist, may be, she should insist her father, partner or son to come along,” she said. Noting that women are embarrassed and feel awkward about certain health issues, she said that if women are accompanied by family members to gynaecologists, her family will understand her health issues.

“The more people see, the more they move forward and attitudes change,” she added. Balan said she savoured famous sweets of Kolkata and visited the Kalighat temple.

Police believe all four are responsible for dozens of other robberies, possibly including all 50 robberies listed in a recent community alert.

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Four men have been charged in a string of four armed robberies Monday morning on the North and Northwest sides, and police believe the crew is responsible for dozens of other similar robberies.

Dashun McGraw, 19, Marquise Green, 20, Marcus Carter, 20, and Marchelo Hicks, 21, all are charged with four counts of armed robbery, four counts of aggravated armed robbery, and four counts of robbery, according to Chicago Police Supt. David Brown. Carter, Hicks, and Green also are charged with one count each of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon.

Brown said the four are responsible for four robberies on Monday morning; two between about 3:15 a.m. and 3:18 a.m. on the 2400 block of West Berwyn Avenue and the 4300 block of North Leavitt Street, and two more between 10:26 a.m. and 10:39 a.m. on the 2100 block of North

In all four robberies, three of the men approached victims who were either walking alone, or sitting in parked car, demanding their property at gunpoint, before fleeing in a waiting car.

Police have said, around 10:45 a.m., officers spotted the robbers in a stolen Hyundai near Winnemac and Oakley avenues. The men fled from police before crashing into a white Department of Streets and Sanitation box truck at the corner of Oakley Avenue and Winona Street, and then burst into flames.

Brown said the four men ran off after the crash, and police tracked them to a nearby garage, where all four were arrested. Three guns also were recovered. Chopper 2 was overhead as police hauled one of the suspects away down an alley.

Brown called out the courts on the next steps - not only because of the violent nature of these crimes, but the volume of crimes that police believe these four men are behind.

“It’s important this hard work is not undone by our courts not taking this seriously,” Brown said. “This is a danger to the community.”

Molina reached out to the Cook County State’s Attorney’s office and the Chief Judge’s office with those comments and requests Wednesday. Neither would comment on pending cases. a CBS 2 has been investigating this growing pattern of armed robberies for weeks - and in reality, we believe there have actually been more than 100 violent robberies in the past month in the city – all of them on the North, Northwest, and West sides.

February Is Punjabi Language Month In Illinois

EDISON ,NJ- An investigation into a bulldozer that appeared at the annual India Day Parade in Edison in August has determined there is not enough evidence to support a bias intimidation charge, the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office announced. The incident was “properly reported and classified as a bias incident,”

but the investigation did not reach the threshold for criminal charges, Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone and Chief Thomas Bryan of the Edison Police Department said. The bulldozer was adorned with signs and slogans expressing support for the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, and the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath. Both politicians are members of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party in India, which has deployed bulldozers as weapons of intimidation and destruction against Muslim homes. The New Jersey Council on AmericanIslamic Relations thanked the prosecutor’s office for investigating the incident during the Aug. 14 parade and welcomed their decision to classify it as a “bias incident,” in a statement on Friday.

Springfield, IL: In recognition of the contributions of Punjabi speaking residents to the communities in Illinois, Governor J.B. Pritzker proclaimed the month of February in 2023 as “PUNJABI LANGUAGE MONTH” in Illinois.

Punjabi is the 9th most widely spoken language in the world and is spoken by more than 113 million people worldwide mainly by the Hindus, Sikhs, Muslim, and Christians with roots from the region. It is recognized as one of the official languages in India, Pakistan, United Kingdom, and Canada. There are more than 750,000 Punjabi speaking Americans and more than fifty thousand Punjabi speaking Illinoisans.

“Several activities and events to celebrate the Punjabi Language Month have been planned for the Metro Chicago area,” said Bhupinder Singh Dhaliwal, president of Punjabi Cultural Society of Chicago, “RANGLA PUNJAB event on March 25, 2023 at College of DuPage is one of them.

Sikhs Call For Probe After N Carolina Gurdwara Vandalized

New York, Jan 30 (IANS) A recent string of attacks by vandals on a Sikh temple in the US has left the community worried with leaders asking for a thorough investigation into the incidents.

In various incidents over the last two months, the windows, lights and security cameras of Gurdwara Sahib Khalsa Darbar on East Arrowood Road in Charlotte, North Carolina, were shattered and damaged, local media reported.

“It’s shocking for us to experience things like this. We’re a small community in Charlotte…” Ajay Singh, a Sikh community member told the Charlotte Observer.

According to the 2021 American Community Survey, there are roughly 6,900 Sikhs out of 10.5 million people

across North Carolina.

Singh said acts of vandalism at the Gurdwara started last fall with trash being thrown around the area.

“On January 3, a window near the worship room was destroyed. Two days later, a window was broken near a room for children,” he said.

According to the Observer, Gurdwara

members had filed a police report but Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police denied there were any between December 1 and January 13. Police did not respond to a Charlotte Observer inquiry on whether there was an active investigation there.

“We really need law enforcement to step up,” Pawanjit Singh, a member of the Gurdwara, told Charlotte Observer.

“They need to find who is doing this and why they are doing this.”

Pawanjit Singh further said that no one was present at the gurdwara when the acts occurred, and the motive of attack remains unknown.

“Ninety per cent of police officers probably do not know who Sikhs are,” he said. “When they don’t know they can’t relate to what an act of vandalism at a Sikh temple means.”

Hair health tips and tricks

The wintry cold winds can take a toll on the moisture level of our hair. Rob Smith, Dyson Senior Principal Hair Care Scientist shares a few hair health tips and tricks to build into daily routines as well as to protect precious locks from harsh winters.

Condition with every wash:

Conditioners are some of the best products you can use on your hair. They coat the hair and lubricate it, meaning a comb can more easily reduce static build-up and reduce flyaway. Conditioners do not repair hair, but they help to reduce the signs of damage in the future.

Wide tooth combs: Using a wide tooth comb works well to reduce friction and mechanical damage when your hair is wet and much weaker.

Brush down: A good brushing technique is to brush down, starting from the ends of your hair, to remove tangles. Starting from the root will only tighten the knots further.

Milder shampoos: Greasy hair and scalp are caused by the build-up of the sebum produced by each hair follicle. Washing your hair often is not necessarily bad; reducing unpleasant residues such as sebum, loose skin cells, sweat, and environmental pollutants.

We continue to live in a world where our race, geography, income, and positioning in the social strata decide our access to healthcare. Even though economic or social hurdles can be taken care of through external factors, the rest stand as tall barriers for many. Healthcare services are not yet advanced in remote parts of the country, resulting in many people migrating to cities for better healthcare.

Digital penetration across the world significantly scaled up post Covid-19, but disruptive tech needs a wider adoption for it to reach these remote locations to make a larger impact. Digital health has been around for some time now and needs to be understood fully to leverage it for the greater good. Providing equal and affordable access to healthcare has the potential to significantly improve patient outcomes as it enables easier access during emergency situations, better manage chronic conditions and latestage interventions, improve patient monitoring, and help in overall population health improvement. Digital technologies in healthcare can make this possible.

Adopting digital health our current health care systems struggle with the quantum of workload for physicians and clinicians, technological interventions can help to optimize workflows and reduce the workload.

Once overhauled, institutions will be able to mitigate lacunas and bring efficacy to address health disparities across the regions. Additionally, digitalisation encourages cooperation, which furthers the boundaries of digital health study. In the future, digital healthcare is what will guarantee the provision of valuefocused treatment and the achievement of meaningful health outcomes. It may even clear the way for universal healthcare to be implemented.

Identifying scope of work

Before addressing and mitigating problems in the system and adopting technology as a key driving force, the needs of the patients must be

Data driven solutioning

classified. One technology solution may not work as a one-size-fits-all solution for healthcare. Evaluating the needs of the underrepresented population to create tailor-made digital solutions that can help facilitate focused health interventions to address their immediate needs. Identifying the specific needs of specific groups to curate precise digital tools can prove impactful in the long run. Instead of just digitising existing healthcare delivery models, a fundamental rethinking of these systems is required if we are to achieve genuine health equality. In order to effectively help those who are underserved, we must first assess their situation and develop digital solutions that are specifically designed to meet their requirements and provide targeted health treatments. It is possible to improve the quality and efficiency of care by identifying groups with similar requirements and then developing

a solution that makes use of digital technologies to satisfy those needs. Devising a digital health strategy

Appropriate investments are necessary to improve connectivity, affordability and accessibility. Policy support is a crucial element that often goes unnoticed but has a larger impact on beneficiaries. A well-planned strategy to adopt health tech and leverage it to its full potential to regulate supply-chain logistics, bring in universal healthcare collaboration, integrate design thinking, drive value care and enable transparency in the whole system. Health inequities are exacerbated by obstacles to technological access, which can only be removed via a deep understanding of the interplay between social, cultural, and economic realities. To close the gaps and provide a long-term, comprehensive healthcare answer, we must address connection,

Digital health is redesigning future healthcare systems where efficacy will be at the core of all. Health equity requires institutions to accept technology at a macro level in order to improve patient outcomes at a granular level. Emerging technologies like remote surgeries, robotic assistance, and invisible wearables will just enable high-quality healthcare services to one and all. The full potential of digital health lies in advancing racial, gender, social and age inclusivity, and mitigating gaps in primary healthcare systems. Positively, advances in both technology and our understanding of the data they provide are being put to work which is improving health outcomes for people and reducing health inequities. By enabling practitioners to go beyond clinical considerations to acquire a complete view of a person’s important markers impacting health, health “techquity,” or the strategic design, development, and deployment of technology to promote health equality, improves health outcomes for everyone. Clinicians’ capacity to deliver personcentered, equitable care is enhanced by knowledge of social risk factors, which in turn guides treatment decisions. Health equality can be maintained through technology just as it was when Covid vaccines were provided to the whole population of India, complete with downloadable digital vaccination certificates verified by QR codes. If we are going to go ahead and fully embrace digital technology to guarantee health equality, we will need to create solutions that cater to the requirements of all populations and boost their level of digital literacy. This can only be achieved if the healthcare personnel are equipped with both clinical and technological expertise. By embedding design thinking technology at each stage, digital has the ability to revolutionise the whole supply chain, fostering more responsive, transparent, and high-value care.

India lift inaugural Women’s U-19 T20 World Cup with thumping win over England

Shafali Verma-led India U-19 squad managed to do what their seniors could not do by clearing final hurdle in a global event

India on Sunday won their maiden ICC title in women’s cricket as a bunch of sprightly and talented teenagers lifted the inaugural U-19 Women’s World Cup with an emphatic seven-wicket victory over England.

The Shafali Verma-led India U-19 squad managed to do what their seniors could not do by clearing the final hurdle in a global event.

India first bundled out England for 68 in 17.1 overs and then returned to knock

India’s bowling attack, led by medium pacer Titas Sadhu, who hails from Chinsurah in Bengal, and supported by leg-spinner Parshavi Chopra, set up the comprehensive win on Sunday as they blew England away with a clinical display at Senwes Park.

While Sadhu showed that India Women’s pace bowling is in safe hands following the retirement of Jhulan Goswami with impressive figures of 4-0-6-2, Chopra too continued her dream run as she snapped 2/13.

Women eye title before World Cup

Senior India batter Murali Vijay on Monday announced his retirement from all forms on cricket, thereby ending an illustrious career spanning over 16 years.

The 38-year-old took to Twitter to make the announcement, thanking the BCCI, Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) and his former IPL franchise Chennai Super Kings (CSK) for the opportunities given to him.

“Today, with immense gratitude & humility, I announce my retirement from all forms of international cricket.

Lucknow curator loses job for poor pitch

Shubman Gill scored his maiden T20I century in the deciding match against New Zealand at the Motera stadium near Ahmedabad on Wednesday. The opener’s unbeaten 126 helped India clinch the series 2-1 following a 168run victory.

Besides Gill’s innings, useful contributions from Rahul Tripathi, Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya propelled India to 234/4 in their allotted overs. New Zealand, in reply, never really got going after being reduced to 7 for four in the third over with Pandya

and Arshdeep Singh sharing the spoils. Captain Pandya was the most successful bowler with 4/16 as New Zealand folded up for 66. None of their batters except for Daryl Mitchell (35) could put up a resistance against the Indians. But it was Gill’s day and his knock demoralised the visitors. There had never been any doubt about Gill’s class and temperament but he had struggled to do justice to his class. While he was billed mostly as a Test batter for most part of his short career, he has met the demands of the limited overs variety this year. After a double century and century in the ODIs against New Zealand, he showed how he had remodelled his game for the shortest version too. The early loss of Ishan Kishan had no impact as Gill and Tripathi ensured a blazing start.

India will look to conclude the final leg of their preparations for the Women’s T20 World Cup with a win in the tri-series final against South Africa at Buffalo Park on Thursday. With not many days left for the Cup, winning this title should go on to be a big boost for the Harmanpreet Kaurled side which is yet to lose any game in this South African sojourn. Following their 1-4 series loss to Australia at home, India have bounced back with three wins in the tri-series and would be hoping to end the tournament on a high before they enter the 10-team showpiece event beginning on February 10. India had got the better of South Africa in the tri-series opener before their next league fixture against the latter was washed out.

Sarfaraz Khan is not just smashing on the selection doors, he is burning them: Ravichandran Ashwin

The curator of the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow has paid the price for preparing a poor pitch for the second India-New Zealand T20I, which was held on Sunday.

After India captain Hardik Pandya slammed the wicket, calling it a “shocker of a pitch”, the curator has been removed from his job.

“The curator has been removed and replaced by Sanjeev Kumar Agarwal, who isa very experienced curator. We will turn things around ina month.

He has made a strong statement with his sheer performances. He is averaging in excess of 100 in the last three seasons at a high strike-rate as well. Meanwhile, former India captain Sunil Gavaskar slammed the Chetan Sharma-led All India Selection Committee for ignoring batter Sarfaraz. Several current and former cricketers have expressed their disappointment over Sarfaraz’s snub from the team, despite his excellent form with the bat in domestic circuit.
