Ohio train: Anger and fear over toxic chemical derailment
Furious, fearful and frustrated residents of the sleepy town of East Palestine, Ohio, were left with few answers after a tense meeting with officials on Wednesday.
Much of the anger was directed at the Norfolk Southern railway company, whose train carrying toxic chemicals derailed 13 days ago as it passed through the town, causing a large fire. Representatives of the company pulled out just hours before the meeting began, citing security concerns.
El Paso shooting: One dead in Texas shopping centre attack
One person has been killed and three injured in a shooting at a shopping centre in El Paso, Texas.Police say two suspects are in custody, and one was tackled at the scene by an off-duty officer. Authorities are not looking for anyone else.
The incident happened on Wednesday at the Cielo Vista Mall.It is located near a Walmart supermarket where 23 people were killed in a racist attack in 2019, one of the deadliest mass shootings in US history. On Wednesday El Paso police chief Peter Pacillas said off-duty officers working with security at the mall responded “within three minutes” and arrested one suspect without firing a weapon.
China warns US of countermeasures
Diplomatic friction festered between the United States and China on Wednesday as Beijing charged that U.S. high altitude balloons flew over its Xinjiang and Tibet regions and said it would take measures against U.S. entities that undermine Chinese sovereignty.
Washington and Beijing are locked in a tussle over flying objects after the U.S. military this month shot down what it called a Chinese spy balloon over the coast of South Carolina. Beijing says its balloon was a civilian research vessel mistakenly blown off course, and that Washington overreacted. This week, China countered that U.S. balloons had flown over its airspace without permission more than 10 times on round-the-world flights since May 2022.
After the derailment, emergency crews performed a controlled release of vinyl chloride from five railcars that were at risk of exploding. Thick plumes of black smoke towered over the town, but crews monitoring the air quality sought to reassure locals that it was going as planned.
Despite those assurances from officials, many residents say they continued to be frightened of the potential harms, which they say had impacted humans and wildlife alike. Thousands of dead fish have appeared in the creeks in the town, while people told local media that their chickens had died suddenly, and that their pets had fallen ill.

president’s doctor, as it also did during his previous checkup in 2021. This time around, with the Republican 2024 campaign already kicking off, it will be scrutinized even more closely. Despite poor poll ratings, Biden -- a Democrat -- has been suggesting for some time that he intends to run again, potentially lining up a rematch of his 2020 battle with his predecessor Donald Trump, who has already declared his candidacy.
Washington: Joe Biden will complete a routine medical checkup on Thursday, a crucial step for the oldest-ever US president ahead of his expected fight for reelection in 2024.

Under the Biden administration, India and the US has made great strides in their trade relationships, top US officials have said after President Joe Biden announced that Air India has agreed to a historic purchase of airplanes from Boeing.
On Tuesday, the White House announced that Boeing and Air India have reached an agreement under which the airline will purchase 190 B737 MAX, 20 B787, and 10 B777X for a total of 220
“I’m thrilled to celebrate this new development in the thriving trade relationship between the United States and India. Today’s announcement is a deal of historic significance between the Boeing Company and the Tata Group,” US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo said.
Observing that the Air India orders will be Boeing’s third biggest sale of all time in dollar value and second in quantity, Raimondo said this is a win for workers, manufacturers, and suppliers across the United States, and it reaffirms the deep and lasting relationship between the two nations.
Raimondo is scheduled to travel to India in March to co-chair the US-India CEO Forum and US-India Commercial Dialogue meetings with her Indian counterpart Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal.

Retirees in China protest over slashed health benefits
Some ambulance callers to be told go elsewhere
Beijing: (IANS) Crowds of retirees in China have again taken to the streets to protest against cuts to their medical benefits, the media reported. They gathered on Wednesday for a second time in Wuhan, where Covid was first detected, and also in the northeastern city of Dalian, BBC reported. Scotland: Nicola Sturgeon decides to step down
Nicola Sturgeon, the leader of the Scottish government and a powerful figure in the drive for Scottish independence, said on Wednesday that she would step down after more than eight years in the role. She said her decision, which was unexpected, came “from a place of duty and of love” and was not a reaction to short-term pressures.
“This decision comes from a deeper and longer-term assessment,” Sturgeon, 52, said during a news conference at Bute House, her official residence in Edinburgh.
Russian jets amassed at Ukraine border
Russia is preparing a new air assault with jets and attack helicopters to support its offensive in Ukraine, western intelligence has warned. A build-up of fixed-wing and rotary aircraft have been spotted on Russia’s border with Ukraine leading analysts to believe Moscow could attempt to use the air assets to gain the initiative in the eastern Donbas region. The warning came as more than 50 of Ukraine’s western allies gathered at Nato’s headquarters in Brussels to set out plans for future military support. Lloyd Austin, the US defence secretary, who convened the talks, said there had been no breakthrough on supplying Kyiv with fighter jets.
Protests first took place in Wuhan on February 8 after provincial authorities said they were cutting the level of medical expenses which retirees can claim back from the government. Social media footage shows the protesters to be largely elderly retirees, who say this comes at a time of soaring healthcare costs, BBC reported. Although such health insurance matters are handled at a provincial level, protests have spread to different parts of the country in what appears to be a renewed belief in the power of demonstrating in China.
A new way of screening ambulance calls is to be introduced across England in an effort to improve response times.
NHS England is asking ambulance crews to review which emergency calls other than those classed as immediately life threatening can be treated elsewhere. The calls - known as category twoinclude emergencies such as heart attacks and strokes.
But the category also covers some that may not need such a fast response, such as burns and severe headaches. About 40% of these lower priority calls

In trials in London and across the West Midlands, nearly half of those receiving a callback were advised to go instead to an urgent treatment clinic, their GP or a pharmacist.
NHS England is now asking the other eight ambulance services in England to adopt the approach.

Infiltration bid foiled, Pak trying to disturb peace in Kashmir: Army
Air India places order for 840 aircraft; includes option to buy 370 planes: Official
New Delhi, Feb 16 (PTI) Tata Groupowned Air India has placed an order for 840 planes with Airbus and Boeing, including the option to acquire 370 aircraft, with a senior airline official on Thursday saying the order is a “landmark moment” in the Indian aviation history.
Srinagar, Feb 16 (IANS) The Army has foiled an infiltration attempt in the forward area of Tangdhar sector in North Kashmir’s Kupwara district, thereby preventing efforts of Pakistan to destabilise peace in Kashmir, said officers on Thursday.
On Wednesday night, alert troops deployed in an anti-infiltration grid detected a movement of three terrorists across their own side of the Line of Control (LoC) while they were approaching the LoC Fence, the Army said. “On being challenged at close proximity to the post, an intense firefight ensued between the terrorists and the alert troops, resulting in successful elimination of one terrorist, while grievously injuring the other. The injured terrorist managed to flee to PoJK (Pakistan occupied Jammu Kashmir), alongwith the third terrorist, taking advantage of darkness,” the Army said.
A thorough joint search operation was launched along with Jammu and Kashmir Police in the morning, resulting in the recovery of one dead terrorist, one AK series rifle, one light automatic weapon, six magazines, two grenades and a large quantity of warlike stores.
New US Policy to help aged out kids
The announcement by Air India’s Chief Commercial and Transformation Officer Nipun Aggarwal comes a day after the airline said it has placed a firm order for 470 aircraft -- 250 from Airbus and 220 from Boeing. In a LinkedIn post, Aggarwal said the airline is humbled by the excitement generated across the world by the airline’s aircraft order. “The order comprises 470 firm aircraft, 370 options and purchase rights to be procured from Airbus and Boeing over the next decade,” he said.
This will be one of the largest aircraft orders by an airline in the modern
The airline’s last order was for 111 planes -- 68 from Boeing and 43 from Airbus -- and that deal was worth $10.8 billion. The order was placed in 2005.
aviation history. According to him, this order of 840 aircraft has been a culmination of a fascinating journey that began almost two years ago with the Air India privatisation process.
The Airbus firm order comprises 210 A320/321 Neo/XLR and 40 A350900/1000. The Boeing firm order
comprises 190 737-Max, 20 787s and 10 777s.
“We have also signed up for long-term maintenance of the engines with CFM International (CFM), Rolls-Royce and GE Aerospace,” he said.
This was also the first time in more than 17 years that Air India, which was acquired from the government by Tata Group in January 2022, has ordered planes. The first A350 plane will be delivered to the airline by the end of this year.
Aggarwal on Thursday said the order demonstrates the vision and aspiration of Tata Group to transform Air India into a world-class airline and connect India “non-stop” to every major city in the world.
“This order is also a testament to the tremendous economic potential unleashed by the Air India privatisation,” he said, adding that it is indeed a landmark moment in the history of Air India and Indian aviation.

Income Tax ‘survey’ operations at BBC offices continues for third day
Under the new guidance issued Tuesday by USCIS some immigrants in the green card backlog get to benefit. As many immigrants cannot get green cards with their parents on turning 21 or aging out, USCIS has changed the way ‘age’ is calculated.
Effective immediately, USCIS will use the Dates for Filing instead of Final Action Date for calculating a noncitizen’s age under the Child Status Protection Act (CSPA) when an immigrant visa number becomes available.
Some noncitizens with a pending application may now have a CSPA age that is under 21 based on this change. Noncitizens may file a motion to reopen their previously denied adjustment of status application with USCIS by using Form I-290B, Notice of Appeal or Motion.
The Income Tax department’s ‘survey’ at the BBC office here continued for the third straight day on Thursday as officials gathered financial data from select staffers and made copies of electronic and paper data of the news organisation. The operation that began at the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) offices in Delhi and Mumbai around 11:30 am on Tuesday has clocked more than 45 hours now, officials said. The survey is going on,
they told PTI.
Authorities had said on Wednesday that the exercise would continue for some more time, saying the “exact time frame to call the operation closed rests entirely on the teams on the ground”.
The survey is being carried out to investigate issues related to international taxation and transfer pricing of BBC subsidiary companies, officials have said.
debut. Dravid kept his cards close to his chest on whether Iyer is ready to take the rigours of the longest format, but he made an important point about team management’s philosophy where any performing player if he comes back after injury would automatically get his place back. “It is always good to have somebody back from injury. We never like to lose people to injuries and it is never nice for a team, nice for that individual and glad that he (Iyer) is fit. We will take a call after a couple of training sessions.”
12 cheetahs to be flown in from SA on Feb 18
Twelve cheetahs will be flown in from South Africa on February 18, Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav said on Thursday.

Presently, the eight cheetahs at Kuno are killing a prey every three-four days and are in good health, officials said. One of the cheetahs was unwell as her creatinine levels had shot up. She has recovered after treatment, they said.

Home minister Amit Shah on Tuesday claimed that the government had nothing to “hide or be afraid of” in the Adani case and saw the BBC documentary as part of a conspiracy to target Narendra Modi since 2002, adding that each time the Prime Minister had come out “shining and more popular”.
“The BJP has nothing to hide in this (Adani) matter. Nor do we have anything to fear,” Shah said in an interview to news agency ANI on being asked about the Opposition’s allegations that the government was
on Adani or be afraid of NOTHING TO HIDE
Shah refused to speak further on the Adani row on the ground that the Supreme Court was hearing a matter related to it and it would not be proper for a minister to comment on the issue
resorting to “favouritism and crony capitalism” by giving out key projects to the Adani group. Shah refused to speak further on the Adani row on the ground that the Supreme Court was hearing a matter related to it and it would not be proper for a minister to comment on the issue. Asked about Congress leader Rahul Gandhi focussing on the Adani issue in his speech in the Lok Sabha, Shah said he had nothing to comment on it as it was up to Rahul and his scriptwriters to decide what they wanted to focus on.
Shah also denied Rahul’s charges of corruption and
favouritism against the BJP government, claiming that “nobody so far has been able to level such (corruption) allegations against the BJP”.
The interview was conducted before the income tax department launched “surveys” at BBC offices on Tuesday. Asked whether he viewed the Hindenburg report on Adani and the BBC documentary on Modi as part of a conspiracy, Shah said: “The truth emerges despite a thousand conspiracies around it. They are after Modi since 2002. But every time, Modiji comes out stronger and more popular.”
Air India: How the record plane deal is a game-changer
Air India’s record deal for 470 planes from Airbus and Boeing has happened at a time when the carrier plans to become “a worldclass proposition”, in the words of N Chandrasekaran, chairman of Tata group, which owns the airline.
These orders - beating the American Airlines’ 460-plane deal in 2011would modernise Air India’s fleet and help it to “dramatically” expand its network, Mr Chandrasekaran said. The troubled national carrier, which was acquired by Tatas about two years ago, has retired most of its older aircraft and launched a five-year plan to modernise its ageing fleet. The first new plane will go into service at the end of this year. The sheer size of this new order indicates Air India’s desire to reclaim its pole position in India’s crowded aviation market and acquire a strategic edge to service the world, say experts. “These orders directly synergise Air India’s fleet with Lufthansa and Singapore Airlines - all part of Star Alliance, the world’s largest global airline alliance,” said Mark Martin, an aviation analyst. “To me it looks like a big game plan to counter the dominance
of Gulf carriers, for whom Star Alliance has been an arch nemesis”. Indian travellers currently rely heavily on Emirates, Qatar Airways, Etihad and other Middle Eastern airlines for overseas connections to Europe, US and other parts of the world. That could change as Air India’s new fleet are put into service, Mr Martin believes.
The acquisition of wide bodied aircraft like the A350s will allow Air India to penetrate markets like the US and Australia directly through non-stop flights between these destinations and India. These are lucrative routes to service the massive Indian diaspora that resides overseas.
“These orders will silence the critics of Air India’s disinvestment. Its potential under the government was unexplored,” Jitendra Bhargava, former executive director at Air India told the BBC. But in order to truly realise its potential and effectively
run fifth-generation aircraft like the A350s, the carrier will have to rapidly modernise its operations, including software systems, maintenance and human resource capabilities, say experts. “If they are successful, they will take India’s uniqueness to the globe once again, after many years,” said Mr Martin.
However to make a dent globally, Air India will need to start focusing “beyond just India originating passengers and generate more connecting traffic”, Mr Awtaney added. For this, it will need to both optimise its route network and India will need to improve infrastructure.
The Indian aviation market has seen a sharp recovery post pandemic, with domestic traffic growing by 48.9% yearon-year according to government figures. More than 122 million Indians took internal flights in December 2022, latest data shows.

Mia visits India sometimes as her grandparents still live in India and she feels a special connection to the country.
Indian Origin
Mia says that she feels very strongly about India and particularly Indian girls who want to choose ports as a career. Her fondness stems from the stories her dad told her about India. Mia’s dad Vyom Bhuta was born and brought up in Rajkot in Gujarat India. He was passionate about tennis and left for the US when he was 16 in the hopes to play tennis and further his career as an athlete in America. His sporting achievements lay the foundation for his academics in the United States. Growing up Bhuta says that she was surrounded by athletes as her mother too used to

Indian American Soccer Captain in USA National

17-year-old Mia Bhuta has many firsts to her career. The talented soccer player gained limelight when she played in the US national team at the FIFA-Under 17 World Cup in India late last year. Mia played an excellent game in Odisha, India during the FIFA cup and her goal was the talk of the sports circles. She dedicated her goal to her grandfather who had a bypass surgery that particular day.
A Pittsburgh native, Mia Bhuta is born to an Indian origin father and an American mom. Growing up her father’s journey as an immigrant arriving in the US as a student played a significant part in shaping Bhuta’s career. While traditionally not many Indian-origin families necessarily look at sports as the obvious choice for their kids’ career, Bhuta considers herself lucky that both her parents encouraged her from the beginning.
During her match in India, a place she considers significant given her Indian background, Bhuta took to the mic and said, “My dad was born in India and grew up here. He came to the US at 16 to pursue his passion – so for me to be here at 16 following my dream to be at a World Cup, it is really special to me.” Bhuta graduated the high school a year early and is now joining the Stanford University. In between setting up her stuff at the University, Bhuta squeezed

Talking about her foundation in the game, Mia tells Hi India that she first began playing football at the local training facility for kids called Li’l Kickers. She was all of 4 years back then. She says, “Growing up, I continued

It has been a lot of hard work. I don’t think there was one moment where anyone felt that I could make it big. It was an intense training that took me where I am.”
Academic Excellence
What is remarkable is that despite her grueling training session, Mis still was able to graduate from high school a year early. She took a few months gap and is now beginning at Stanford where she will be studying computer science, linguistics and psychology. Indian-origin businessman jailed for loan fraud in UK
An Indian-origin businessman has been sentenced to 12 months imprisonment in the UK for having abused an interest free loan scheme provided to businesses impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic.
London: (IANS) An Indian-origin businessman has been sentenced to 12 months imprisonment in the UK for having abused an interest free loan scheme provided to businesses impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic. Kulwinder Singh Sidhu, 58, from Stanwell, pleaded guilty to offences under the Companies Act and the Fraud Act, having abused the Bounce Back Loan financial support scheme in 2020. He was director of Wavylane Ltd, a haulage company based in Stanwell, and which had been trading since 2010.
“Our action has ensured repayment of the loan money and taxpayers have not been left out of pocket,” Julie Barnes, Chief Investigator at the Insolvency Service, said.
“Any other company directors who might be tempted into dissolving their business to try to keep public money they are not entitled to, should be aware they are risking a lengthy prison term,” she added.
SC to consider hearing Ram Sethu plea
On 9 June, 2020 Sidhu applied for a 50,000 pound Bounce Back Loan from his bank on behalf of his business. Under the Bounce Back Loan scheme, genuine businesses impacted by the pandemic could take out interest-free taxpayerbacked loans of up to a maximum of 50,000 pound.
The loan was paid into the company bank account and on June 26, 2020 Sidhu filed paperwork with Companies House to have the business dissolved, having transferred the funds to his personal bank account within two days of receipt. The striking-off application

to dissolve the company was explicit that interested parties and creditors, such as a bank with an outstanding loan, must be notified within seven days of making an application to dissolve a company. The form also highlighted that failure to notify interested parties is a criminal offence, however Sidhu did not follow these rules.
The company was dissolved in October 2020, and was subsequently identified as likely Bounce Back Loan fraud by the Insolvency Service and crossgovernment counter-fraud systems. The Insolvency Service investigation found that Sidhu had fraudulently overstated the company turnover in the Bounce Back Loan application, and within two days of receiving the money he had transferred it to his personal account before dispersing the funds to his son and another company. He pleaded guilty to charges in December last year, and was sentenced on February 13, this year at Guildford Crown Court.

President Joe Biden and Prime Minister Narendra Modi discussed the importance of the US-India strategic technology partnership and committed to continue working together and in groups like the Quad to advance economic growth and expand cooperation on their shared priorities, a presidential spokesperson has said. A phone call between the two leaders took place on Tuesday following the announcement of a historic deal between Boeing and Air India for the latter to buy more than 200 planes from the American plane manufacturer. “They also discussed the importance of the strategic technology partners between India and the United States. And the two leaders reaffirmed the strength of the US-India relationship, and committed to continue working together and in groups like the Quad to advance economic growth for our two countries and expand cooperation on their shared priorities,” White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters at a news conference.

Air India has provisionally agreed to acquire almost 500 jets from Airbus and Boeing to take on domestic and international rivals.
Bengaluru, Paris: Air India’s record aircraft deal has put the Tata Groupowned airline in the league of aspiring global carriers.
On Tuesday, it provisionally agreed to acquire almost 500 jets from Airbus and Boeing to take on domestic and international rivals.
Striking the largest ever deal by one
airline took months of secret talks carried out a stone’s throw from Britain’s Buckingham Palace and culminating in a celebration over coastal Indian curries, according to people involved in the talks. Confidentiality was lifted on Tuesday as leaders hailed the accord in a diplomatic embrace between leading G20 nations. Tata Group, which regained control of Air India last year after decades of public ownership, put out just six paragraphs. Its low-key announcement illustrates a rising breed of private airline owners transforming a financially-risky Indian airline sector, alongside the publicityshy founders of IndiGo.
The deal was in the making for over a year, insiders said, recounting details of the process on condition of anonymity. Serious talks began last summer and continued until days before Christmas when outlines were agreed.
As the astonishing scale of the deal began to crystallise, Reuters reported in December the parties were nearing a record 500-plane agreement.
India claimed the top spot in the latest ICC Test rankings after winning the first Test encounter against Australia in Nagpur. Thanks to the comprehensive victory, Rohit Sharma and Co currently has 115 points – 4 points ahead of the second-placed Aussies. In the third spot, England is currently on 106 points but they will have a chance to improve their standing as they take on New Zealand in the Test series starting February 16. The victory also meant that the Indian spin duo –Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja – improved their rankings massively with impressive spells on a pitch that assisted their bowling.
Big Move By Biden Administration To Benefit Indians Seeking Long-Term Visa
Washington: The Biden administration has announced a policy manual update for the purpose of calculating a noncitizen’s age in certain situations under the Child Status Protection Act (CSPA), a move seen as a small but important step in addressing the issues of the aged-out children, a large number of whom are Indians, who came to the US legally with their parents.

“We are aware of the search of the BBC offices in Delhi by Indian tax authorities. I would need to refer you to Indian authorities for the details of this search. Beyond this discrete action, what I’ll say more broadly is the general point that I’ve consistently made in this context, but in a universal context as well,” State Department Spokesperson Ned Price told reporters here.
“We support the importance of free press around the world. We continue to highlight the importance of freedom of expression and freedom of religion or belief as human rights that contribute to strengthening democracies around the world. It has strengthened this democracy here in this country. It has strengthened India’s democracy,” Price said.
For a child to obtain lawful permanent resident status in the United States based on their parent’s approved petition for a family-sponsored or employment-based visa, the child generally must be under the age of 21. If the child turns 21 and “ages out” during the immigration process, the child generally is no longer eligible to immigrate with the parent based on the parent’s petition. “The US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has officially made one of our long-requested policy changes. The USCIS will use the
dates for the filing chart to determine CSPA age and any previously denied petition can be reopened,” said Dip Patel, from the improvethedream.org, which has been leading such an effort on behalf of aged-out children numbering over 200,000. Under this new guidance, the

Congress enacted the CSPA to protect certain noncitizen children from losing eligibility to obtain lawful permanent resident status based on an approved visa petition by providing a method to calculate the child’s age that considers when an immigrant visa number “becomes available.”
Nikki Haley To Run for President in 2024
New Delhi: Searches at the BBC’s offices in Delhi and Mumbai continued for the second straight day as Income Tax officials investigated UK’s national broadcaster, weeks after it aired a controversial documentary on Prime

They should answer other salary-related queries,” said the broadcaster, advising its staff to cooperate with the officials and “answer questions comprehensively”. There has been no official response from the UK. Tax officials who started the “survey” on Tuesday morning will today focus on accounts and question the senior management of the BBC.

G20 spending over Rs 1000cr

of international taxation and transfer pricing irregularities involving the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation), said sources.

Documents were seized and phones and laptops of journalists were taken away, the sources said. The offices will be sealed for the duration of the survey and employees have been asked not to share details with anyone.

It is estimated that more than Rs 1,000 crore will be spent by various Delhi government agencies on the preparations for the G20 summit and related events to be held in the city in the coming months, officials said. Apart from upgrading the civic infrastructure, the beautification work and such other preparations by various departments of the city government and the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) will cost Rs 1,084 crore, they said on Monday. Delhi will host the main summit meeting of the G20 (Group of 20) countries and seven other related events, starting in March. 3 Dead In Michigan State University Shooting, Suspect Dead
A gunman opened fire on Monday night at Michigan State University’s main campus, killing three people and injuring five, some severely, before he was found dead hours later, apparently from a self-inflicted gunshot, police said.
Few official details about the gun violence were immediately available, but Chris Rozman, interim deputy chief of the university police, said shots were fired in two locations - at an academic building called Berkey Hall and the Michigan State University (MSU) Union building.
Police responding to the shooting, which began shortly after 8 p.m. (0100 GMT), found victims at both locations, Rozman told reporters at a televised briefing about three hours later. Rozman said investigators had no information about the motive. He also said the university was not aware of any threats made to the campus before Monday’s bloodshed. Rozman said three victims were killed and five were taken to hospital, some of them with life-threatening injuries.
“We needed some clarifications and for that our team is visiting BBC office and we are carrying out a survey. Our officers have gone to check account books, these are not searches,” Income Tax sources asserted. Sources said the taxmen asked BBC’s finance department for details of its balance sheet and accounts. BBC was in the news recently over the two-part series, “India: The Modi Question”, which was taken down from public platforms last month. On January 21, the Centre, using emergency powers under the Information Technology Rules, 2021, directed blocking multiple YouTube videos and Twitter posts sharing links to the controversial documentary.

Adani: IOC clarifies after Mohua Mitra alleges LPG corruption

The statement, which came in response to TMC’s Mahua Moitra raising a stink of a scam in hiring of the port facility without a tender, contradicted Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd’s earning call presentation that said “MoU signed with IOCL for a takeor-pay contract at Gangavaram Port

“I’m very happy now when youngsters, my kids see me on screen and say damn cool body papa! I feel very happy but it is really scary! I don’t know if I will be able to do it again.”
About what he loves about the chartbuster song Jhoome Jo Pathaan, SRK said: “Jhoome Jo Pathaan is a song that I feel makes you want to dance. Just wanted to do a step which everyone can do with ease. Chopra’s American pop-star husband, singer-actor Nick Jonas has a cameo in the film as they share an awkward kiss. She keeps sending texts at the old number, which is now being used by Rob, as his new work phone. Rob and Mira cross paths at an opera night, and hit it off.
Kartik Aaryan signs off with Salman Khan’s song
The hibernation is over. Ravi Behl, who became a household name nine years ago, courtesy his reality talent show Boogie Woogie, is returning to his “first love, acting”. “ It feels like I am back home,” starts off the actor, who will be seen playing the character of Jaiveer Singh in the Disney+ Hotstar series, The Night Manager. The actor says that his return to the screen with the Hindi adaptation of the popular British series of the same name was by chance, not design. “The credit for my return goes to the lockdown. After Boogie Woogie, I didn’t do anything. During the two years of lockdown, I [decided to] take up my first love, acting,” says Behl, who then reached out to his friends in casting, which led him to the Aditya Roy Kapur, Anil Kapoor, and Sobhita Dhulipala starrer.
Behl shares he was excited to be a part of Sandeep Modi’s adaptation, since he has been an avid viewer of the original series.
Saif Ali Khan’s Black Knight Films and Endemol Shine India to adapt hit Nordic drama ‘The Bridge’
Earlier this month, mid-day had reported that Kartik Aaryan was shooting a last-minute song for Shehzada, which was one of the reasons the film’s release was deferred (Taking a chance on dance, Feb 2). It appears that the team didn’t look too far for inspiration. The makers of the Aaryan and Kriti Sanon-starrer recently released Character dheela 2.0, a recreation of Salman Khan’s hit number from Ready (2011). Production designer Rajat Poddarr reveals that Aaryan — who is also one of Shehzada’s producers — suggested incorporating a promotional song to amp up the buzz around Rohit Dhawan’s directorial venture. “Kartik wanted to [reimagine] this number from Ready, in his own way. Initially, the team felt that the situation didn’t require a song, but he insisted it would enhance the movie’s promotions. He contacted Bosco [Martis] for the choreography, and me for the sets. He suggested to the producers that this would be his team, as we had done the title track of Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 together,” shares Poddarr.
Saif Ali Khan’s Black Knight Films and Endemol Shine India, a Banijay company, have announced they will be adapting the hit Danish/Swedish scripted series, Bron/Broen (The Bridge). The all-new original Hindi edition will star Saif Ali Khan, who will also jointly produce the project under the Black Knight Films banner. The concept of The Bridge has universal appeal, as it can be understood and appreciated by a global audience that is used to living in a world of borders.
The show opens with a dead body discovered on a border that is shared by two countries - half the body lies in one and the other half in another. This discovery leads to a joint investigation by the police forces of the two regions, forcing detectives from both sides to work together to solve the crime. A gem from the Banijay library, the unique global premise of The Bridge has led to its adaptation in multiple languages, set across the international borders of US/ Mexico, UK/France, Germany/Austria, Singapore/Malaysia and Russia/Estonia.

Reminder to Submit Complete Initial Evidence for Form I-485
HiIndia Newsdesk
WASHINGTON,, DC- Save time by filing all required initial evidence and supporting documentation listed under the “Checklist of Required Initial Evidence” heading at the same time you file Form I-485, Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status.
(The checklist is an optional tool to use as you prepare your form, but does not replace statutory, regulatory, and form instruction requirements). Submitting all required initial evidence and supporting documentation at the same time you file Form I-485 may eliminate the need for us to issue a Request for Evidence (RFE)to obtain additional evidence and documentation.
This may also help avoid adjudication delays if we decide that you do not need to be interviewed.
In particular, save time by submitting Form I-693, Report of Medical Examination and Vaccination Record, when you file Form I-485. We generally consider a completed Form I-693 to remain valid for two years after the date the civil surgeon signed Form I-693. Additionally, from Dec. 9, 2021 until March 31, 2023, we are temporarily waiving the requirement that the civil surgeon’s signature be dated no more than 60 days before you file your Form I-485.
We published a new edition of Form I-485 (edition date 12/23/22) on Dec.

USCIS Updates Child Status Protection Act (CSPA) Age Calculation For Certain Adjustment Of Status Applicants
HiIndia Newsdesk
WASHINGTON, DC—U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services has issued guidance in the USCIS Policy Manual to update when an immigrant visa number “becomes available” for the purpose of calculating a noncitizen’s age in certain situations under the Child Status Protection Act (CSPA). For a child to obtain lawful permanent resident status in the United States based on their parent’s approved petition for a family-sponsored or employmentbased visa, the child generally must be under the age of 21. If the child turns 21 and “ages out” during the immigration process, the child generally is no longer eligible to immigrate with the parent based on the parent’s petition. Congress enacted the CSPA to protect certain noncitizen children from losing eligibility to obtain lawful permanent resident status based on an approved visa petition by providing a method to calculate the child’s age that considers when an immigrant visa number “becomes available.” The Department of State’s Visa Bulletin is used to determine when a visa number becomes available. The Visa Bulletin has two charts – the Dates for Filing chart and the Final
Action Date chart. Under the previous CSPA guidance, USCIS considered a visa available for purposes of the CSPA age calculation based only on the Final Action Date chart, even if a noncitizen could apply for adjustment of status using the earlier date in the “Dates for Filing” chart. This USCIS policy change is effective immediately and applies to pending applications. Therefore,

The Election Commission is still looking for election judges to help during the election day. If you speak and read Hindi and English, are an American citizen and reside in Cook County you can serve as a paid Bilingual English/ Hindi Election Judge on February 28, 2023. Judges are paid $230 if they complete training and serve all of Election Day. some noncitizens with a pending application may now have a CSPA age that is under 21 based on this change. For example, between October and December of 2020, certain noncitizens were permitted to file their adjustment of status applications under the Dates for Filing chart of the Visa Bulletin. However, the Final Action Date chart never advanced sufficiently for their applications to be approved. These
noncitizens filed their adjustment of status applications with the requisite fee without knowing whether the CSPA would benefit them.
Under this new guidance, USCIS will now use the Dates for Filing chart to calculate these noncitizens’ ages for CSPA purposes, which provides these noncitizens with more certainty about their eligibility to adjust status. If these noncitizens are eligible to adjust status because of the change in policy and they have filed for adjustment of status, they will also be eligible to apply for employment and travel authorization based on their pending adjustment of status application, and they generally will not lose previously issued employment or travel authorization.
Noncitizens may file a motion to reopen their previously denied adjustment of status application with USCIS by using Form I-290B, Notice of Appeal or Motion. Noncitizens must generally file motions to reopen within 30 days of the decision. For a motion filed more than 30 days after the denial, USCIS may, in its discretion, excuse the untimely filing of the motion if the noncitizen demonstrates that the delay was reasonable and was beyond the noncitizen’s control.
Sikhs Slam US Correctional Agency’s Discriminatory Beard Policy
are alternative respirators out there that bearded people can wear safely to do their jobs… We think there’s a way to keep bearded people safe and not trample on their civil rights.”
New York, Feb 15 (IANS) Sikhs and civil rights activists have expressed grave concerns over California correctional agency’s updated policy that forces bearded officers to shave or face disciplinary action.
The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) rolled out an updated policy on February 1 that requires staff members to shave facial hair, irrespective of any religious or medical reasons they may have for keeping it.
According to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Northern California and the Sikh Coalition, the new policy would disproportionately target religious minorities like Sikh and Black Americans. “This policy has created enormous fear and confusion for Sikh CDCR peace officers whose previously held religious accommodations are no longer valid. It now seemingly forces them to either comply with the shaving requirement under extreme duress or risk their employment,” said Harsimran Kaur, Sikh Coalition’s senior legal counsel.
A CDCR representative said the policy change is an effort to comply with the department’s Covid safety measures.
“They’ve rolled out this blanket, very over-broad policy, that all peace officers must shave to wear N-95s,” Kaur told NBC News. “But we know that there
In a letter addressed to the CDCR, the rights groups also mention a medical condition that causes painful skin inflammation and scarring, specifically among Black men. The new policy “unfairly penalizes Black officers who are much more likely than their white coworkers to suffer from a painful skin condition caused by shaving,” said Brandon Greene, director of the Racial and Economic Justice Program at the ACLU of Northern California. This policy may result in disproportionate discipline and firings of Black CDCR officers,” Greene said.
In the week since the policy went into full effect, both organisations received requests for legal help from Black and Sikh individuals working at CDCR facilities across the state who have been negatively impacted by this move. According to a December 2022 report from the California Department of Human Resources, about 2,000 of CDCR’s approximately 41,000 employees are Black men. Although the exact number of Sikh CDCR peace officers is not available, observant Sikhs are required to wear a religious uniform consisting of a dastaar (turban) and articles of faith, including but not limited to kesh (uncut hair, including an unshorn beard). Last year, a federal appeals court ruled that Sikhs recruits in the US Marine Corps can keep a beard and wear turbans. The judges cited cutting hair and shaving beards as a violation of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA).

Indian-American Judge Slaps $1 Mn Fine On Facebook
New York: IANS) Indian-American judge Vince Chhabria has slapped a fine of almost $1 million on Meta, Facebook’s parent company, and its law firm for creating obstacles for court and users in a data breach trial.
According to a Bloomberg report, District Judge Chhabria wrote in an order that the fine is “loose change” for Facebook and Gibson Dunn & Crutcher LLP for deceitfully denying that it shared users’ private information with third parties.
The San Francisco judge said that Facebook relied on “delay, misdirection, and frivolous arguments” to make the litigation unfairly difficult and expensive. “Perhaps realising they had no real argument for withholding these documents, Facebook and Gibson Dunn contorted various statements” of opposing lawyers and the court acebeyond recognition,” Chhabria wrote, according to Bloomberg.
Indian Student Critical after Car Accident in Arkansas

A Hyderabad native, Indian student who was studying in Arkansas is battling for life after a car accident.
Sree Likhita Pinnam, a computer science student at Wichita State University in Kansas was travelling with her friends when their car went out of control and flipped due to sleet on the roads. Sree got severe head injuries in the accident. Her sister, Sampath Bhargav, a student at University of Buffalo has started a GoFundMe page.
She is currently unresponsive, and on life support. Her sister wrote: “Doctors are not able to predict when they can discharge her, as her condition depends on her response, but they estimate it can take months or even years to recover. The treatment is highly expensive, and they are not certain when she will be discharged.
“And again, after being told repeatedly that these arguments made no sense, Facebook and Gibson Dunn insisted on pressing them,” he said.
The judge added that Facebook also attempted to push the users, who had
filed a complaint against it, into settling for a lesser compensation. The lawsuit was filed in a California court on behalf of Facebook users impacted by Meta’s partnership with research firm Cambridge Analytica. The $925,078.51 penalty comes after Meta had agreed a $725 million settlement in December 2022 to resolve a class-action lawsuit, which claimed that Facebook illegally shared user data with Cambridge Analytica. In March 2018, whistleblower Christopher Wylie publicly revealed that Cambridge Analytica exfiltrated personal data of 87 million Facebook users in the US in order to influence the results of the 2016 US presidential election. This data trove included Facebook users’ ages, interests, pages they liked, groups they followed, physical locations, political and religious affiliations, relationships, and photos, as well as their full names, phone numbers, and email addresses.

Indian-American named to key post in Biden’s economic team
PHILADELPHIA, PA- The U.S. Postal Inspection Service (USPIS) announced the disbursement of over $115 million to 38,889 victims in connection with fraud schemes processed by MoneyGram International Inc. (MoneyGram). The victims, many of whom are elderly, will recover the full amount of their losses. MoneyGram originally entered into a deferred prosecution agreement (DPA) with the Department of Justice in 2012 for willfully failing to maintain an effective anti-money laundering program and aiding and abetting fraud
schemes that generally targeted the elderly and other vulnerable groups. In November 2018, MoneyGram agreed to extend its DPA, implemented additional enhanced compliance obligations, and forfeited $125 million – representing the volume of consumer fraud transactions it processed during the DPA term. The USPIS is using these forfeited funds to compensate the victims of the fraud through the remission process.
“This $115 million disbursement provides a measure of financial justice for the many victims who were harmed by fraudsters who preyed on them,” said Inspector in Charge Christopher A. Nielsen of the USPIS Philadelphia Division.

Indian-American Employer Ordered To Pay $69K Overtime
DETROIT, MI- An Indian-origin owner and operator of three nursing homes in the US state of Michigan had to pay back $69,000 to managers who were not paid their overtime, according to a federal investigation.
Amee Patel owned and ran the operations at Chesaning Nursing Center and Detroit-based Beaconshire Nursing Center and Westwood Nursing Center. The Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division recovered the whole amount in back wages and damages owed to 45 managers who worked at these three centers.
It found that Patel paid the managers hourly wages when they worked fewer than 40 hours in the workweek and paid salaried wages when they exceeded
40 hours. By regularly alternating the managers’ status from hourly to salary, Patel voided their claim that the managers were overtime exempt, the investigation found.
“Business operators cannot casually decide to pay workers as salaried in some weeks and hourly in others. By doing so, Amee Patel clearly violated federal laws by denying workers at

her healthcare facilities all their hardearned pay,” Timolin Mitchell, Wage and Hour Division District Director in Detroit, said.
The division assessed and received payment of $7,938 in civil money penalties for Patel’s repeat violations of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
In 2018, federal investigators found that Patel violated overtime regulations
when she failed to pay drivers for all their travel and wait times.
In 2015, she failed to pay employees for attending mandatory trainings.
In total, the division recovered $17,173 in back wages for 12 Beaconshire Nursing Center employees, $14,205 in back wages for 21 employees at Westwood Nursing Center and $3,133 in back wages for 12 employees at Chesaning Nursing Center. Patel also paid an equal amount in liquidated damages, for a total of $69,022.
In fiscal year 2022, the Detroit district office recovered nearly $2.2 million in back wages and liquidated damages for almost 3,000 workers in Eastern Michigan, of which nearly $500,000 was owed to healthcare workers.

Daily cases fell roughly 70 percent since Jan. 1, according to data. And it’s the only critical viral measurement that’s falling — all the city’s major COVID-19 indicators, from positivity to deaths to hospitalizations, are officially “decreasing,” the city’s health department reported.
The declines coincide with Mayor Eric Adams’ move last week to lift a vaccine mandate for city workers. He warned, however, that the virus and mandates could return.
“Now that we’re seeing a normalization of COVID, there may be another time that we are going to have to do mandates again because these viruses are not going away,” he told Caribbean Power Jam’s “The Reset Show” last week.
“We’re dealing with a whole new environment of what we are fighting against some of these viruses.” Past winters have brought significant surges of COVID-19 cases, and health officials feared it would happen this year.
But aside from a minor uptick, the typical cold weather spike has so far bypassed New York City and elsewhere in the U.S.
A 92 percent decline in daily COVID-19 cases since the omicron variant struck prompted President Joe Biden’s decision to let the nation’s public health emergency for the pandemic end May 11..
Some prominent city health experts worry that it’s too early to let pandemic measures lapse.
Works traced the illegal petroleum dump to Stager Street between Franklin and Ravine avenues, township officials said. “Contaminants entering the Passaic River watershed adversely affect fish and other wildlife in and around the rivers,” Mayor Joseph P. Scarpelli said in the statement.

“I advise residents not to dump or throw any waste into our catch basins in an effort to avoid polluting our waterways,” Scarpelli said. HAZMAT crews deployed absorbent booms to contain the illegal discharge, officials said. “The swift action by the (Nutley) Fire Department mitigated potential damage and prevented the contamination from spreading any further,” the township’s statement said.
“Those responsible for dumping illegally into our storm water system will be prosecuted,” Nutley Public Safety Commissioner Alphonse Petracco said. Anyone with any information about the illegal discharge is asked to contact Lt. Anthony Santoro of the Nutley Fire Department at 973-284-4940.
Indian American Minor Girl Missing From Arkansas
However, he has informed the CPD that he is no longer at risk of losing his job and that leaving the country is not a concern at this time, kark.com reported.
According to The Washington Post, nearly 200,000 IT workers have been laid off since November last year, including some record numbers in companies like Google, Microsoft, Facebook and Amazon.
New York, Feb 10 (IANS) IndianAmerican Arvind Raman, a longtime Purdue University administrator and faculty member, has been named the new John A Edwardson Dean of the College of Engineering.
Raman, an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi alumnus, is Purdue’s executive associate dean of engineering and Robert V Adams Professor in Mechanical Engineering. He succeeds Mark Lundstrom, who has served as interim dean of the college since July 1, 2022.
“The College of Engineering is poised for excellence at scale and the promise to pursue and lead truly gamechanging initiatives that will impact the state, nation and world,” Raman said in a university statement.
Tanvi Marupally, 14
CONWAY, AK- A 14-year-old IndianAmerican school girl has been missing for more than three weeks in the US state of Arkansas, with the police indicating that she might have run away due to the fear of leaving America as her father faced the possibility of retrenchment amidst the layoffs in the tech industry.
Tanvi Marupally from Conway, Arkansas was last seen in her neighborhood on January 17 when she left for school on the bus, the Conway Police Department (CPD) said. Police said they believe one of the possible reasons why she ran away was a fear of her family being deported. Tanvi’s parents believe that their daughter ran away because of the family’s tenuous immigration status. They say even though they’ve legally lived and worked in the US for many years, hoping and trying to acquire citizenship, the country’s immigration system has left them out in the cold, katv.com reported.
Her father, Pavan Roy Marupally, who works in a tech company faced the possibility of losing his job due to ongoing layoffs in the technology sector. Conway Police released CCTV grab of Indian schoolgirl Tanvi Marupally when she was last seen
As per some industry insiders, between 30 to 40 per cent of them are Indian IT professionals, a significant number of whom are on H-1B and L1 visas. According to LayoffTracker.com, 91,000 were laid off just in January 2023 and this number may grow in the coming months. This has a huge impact on them, and their families, especially on the H-1B holders who would need to leave the US immediately within 10 days beyond the H-1B grace period. Her mother, Sridevi Eadara, also lost her job, the report added. Sridevi had to return to India alone and reapply for a visa as a dependent of Pavan. It took a year before she could return to be with her family. When asked by his daughter what they would do should he lose his work visa, Pavan told her not to panic.
“I said…let you and your mom first go back to India, let me figure out what and how the system works out, get a proper job, and then call you back,” Pavan said.
“(She said) what, go back to India? Why should I go back to India? I’ve been here.” Her parents believe the prospect of being ripped from her home in the US was too much for their daughter, the report added. The community and the CPD continue to search for her and now there’s a reward for whoever can find her.
The CPD said they asked the US Marshals Service and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children for their assistance with this investigation.
Tanvi’s family is offering a USD 5,000 reward in hopes of bringing her home.
“It is truly an honour to be selected to lead the nation’s largest top-ranked college of engineering at a university with a tremendous legacy and a record of innovation and impact on a global scale,” he added.
In his present role, Raman has led activities aimed at recruiting excellent and diverse faculty talent, enhancing the success of faculty and staff programs, elevating the prestige of Purdue engineering, and supporting the overall quality of academic programs and faculty development, a university release stated.
“Professor Raman is passionate about the role of engineering in creating innovative solutions for people and society. We’re confident that as our next engineering dean, he will lead the college to new levels of excellence and impact,” Patrick Wolfe, Purdue provost and executive vice president for academic affairs and diversity, said in an announcement.
Raman was named a Purdue University Faculty Scholar from 2008-12 and a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers in 2012. He also has a courtesy professorship appointment in materials engineering.
His research interests are in nonlinear dynamics and its applications to atomic force microscopy, human biomechanics, and roll-to-roll flexible electronics manufacturing.
Raman received his PhD in mechanical engineering from the University of California, Berkeley; a Master’s degree, also in mechanical engineering, from Purdue; and a Bachelor of Technology degree from IIT Delhi.

Regulators very, very experienced: Nirmala
“’Kushti’ In Kerala, ‘Dosti’ In Tripura”: PM Jabs Left-Congress Alliance
Radhakishorepur/Ambassa, Tripura: Hitting out at the Congress-CPI(M) alliance in Tripura, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said that the two parties fight ‘kushti’ (wrestling) in Kerala and have done ‘dosti’ (friendship) in the northeastern state.
Making a veiled reference to Tipra Motha, PM Modi claimed that some other parties were also helping the opposition alliance from behind but any vote for them will take Tripura several years backward.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday said the country’s regulators are very experienced and are seized of the matter relating to the Adani Group crisis.
The minister was replying to a question on the observations of the Supreme Court on public interest litigations (PILs) alleging exploitation of investors and “artificial crashing” of the Adani Group’s stocks.
“I will not disclose here what the government will be saying in the court...India’s regulators are very, very experienced and they are experts in their domain. The regulators are seized of this matter and they are on their toes as always, not just now,” she told reporters after her customary post-Budget address to the RBI’s board. Concerned over protecting the interests of Indian investors, the Supreme Court on Friday favoured creating a robust mechanism to regulate the stock market and sought views of the Centre and market regulator SEBI on PILs alleging exploitation of innocent investors and “artificial crashing” of the Adani Group stocks.

“ICC Won’t Be Able To Do Anything In Front Of BCCI”: Shahid Afridi
While Pakistan is the designated host for the Asia Cup, BCCI secretary Jay Shah, who is also the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) head, last year said that India won’t be travelling to the country for the continental event
The confusion over the host venue for the 2023 Asia Cup does not seem to end. While Pakistan is the designated host, BCCI secretary Jay Shah, who is also the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) head, last year said that India won’t be travelling to the country for the continental event. While the decision over the venue of the Asia Cup has been put off in the latest ACC meeting, veteran India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin recently gave his take on the topic. Ashwin, in a video on his YouTube channel, doesn’t think it is possible for Pakistan to skip the ODI World Cup in India if the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) refuses to travel to their country for the Asia Cup.
“Asia Cup was supposed to take place in Pakistan. But, India has announced that if it takes place in Pakistan, then
we won’t be participating. When we say Asia Cup won’t go to their place, they will say that they will also not come to our place,” Ashwin said. The finger-spinner played down Pakistan’s “ODI World Cup threat’, suggesting it is not possible for them to give that tournament a miss.
“But however, I think that is not possible,” Ashwin said of Pakistan’s claim of giving the 50-over World Cup a miss if India don’t travel to Pakistan for the Asia Cup. Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi was recently asked on Samaa TV about Ashwin’s comment, and an opinion was sought on whether it was time for Pakistan to give a strong response. Afridi said: “If anyone is unable to stand on his own feet and then the decision to make strong calls is not easy. They have to look at plenty of things. India agar aankhe dikha raha hain (If India is showing attitude), or taking such strong
stance, then they have made themselves that strong, hence they are being able to talk like this, otherwise they wouldn’t have the courage. At the end it’s making yourself strong and then take decisions..
“I have no idea, will India visit Pakistan for the Asia Cup? Will we boycott the ODI World Cup in India? But we need to take a stand at some point or the other. In this case ICC’s role becomes crucial, they should come forward. I think even ICC won’t be able to do anything in front of BCCI.”
Afridi added that any decision should be taken after due deliberation. “I can also get emotional and say that Pakistan should go and play the World Cup but these decisions should be taken with a lot of planning. We also have to look after our economy and it all depends on where we stand in the world at the moment. So, we should not take any decision emotionally,” he said.

A powerful message on women and the politics of hair at India Art Fair 2023
The India Art Fair 2023 features a thought-provoking installation and video ‘Hair and her’.
This interactive artwork, which was the idea of renowned photographer Rohit Chawla and award-winning advertising and film writer Swati Bhattacharya, offers a strong message about the politics of hair and how it has held women hostage over time. A 22-year-old woman lost her life on October 22, 2022, as a hair tendril broke free from her headscarf. An enraged mob in Maguindanao is openly cutting off a woman’s hair to humiliate her for being a lesbian. A young African American girl in Harlem is burning her hair in an effort to resemble the straight-haired women she sees on billboards, in music videos, and on Tik Toks all around her.
After their husbands’ deaths, widows in Vrindavan are shaving their hair because their beauty is no longer useful. A man controlling a woman’s will through her hair is shown in the ancient Mahabharata epic by Dushasana, just as millions of men

have done to millions of women throughout history, across cultures, and geographical and temporal boundaries.
A woman’s hair has always been intertwined with patriarchy through covering, control, and size reduction. The history of her and her hair is told in ‘The Politics of Hair’. A newspaper has been incorporated into the piece to fill in the gaps and demonstrate that a woman’s hair is never about the woman’s hair, despite the headlines and news space that history has denied it.
The movie and the artwork portray hair cutting as a form of defiance against those who want to restrict a woman’s agency by regulating her hair. In support of the campaign to free women from this bondage, a contribution box at the installation site requests that visitors donate a lock of their hair.
Sharing her thoughts on her creative vision and the genesis of His and her, Swati Bhattacharya said, “Unravel the history of a woman’s hair, and you unravel a history of subjugation across cultures, nations and generations.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), cancer is the most prominent cause of death globally, with the number of people affected by the ailment increasing each year. The cancer statistics in India are grim as well with approximately 27 lakh people being diagnosed with cancer and cancerrelated deaths amounting to 8.5 lakh in 2020, as per India against Cancer, an initiative to combat cancer. While advancements in technology have significantly elevated cancer care, it’s necessary to ensure some habits that can lower your risk of this deadly disease.
According to Dr Leena Dadhwal, Oncologist, Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute, “The exact cause of cancer is not known, but the growth of a cancerous tumour mainly happens because of low immunity. Foreign cancer cells can invade the body and not be detected if one’s immunity is low. A good immune system requires a healthy lifestyle, which can significantly reduce chances of cancer.”
A study, titled Cancer is a Preventable Disease that Requires Major Lifestyle Changes, in the National Library of Medicine says that only 5 to 10 per cent of all cancer cases are because of genetic defects, while most cancers lie in the environment and lifestyle. “The evidence indicates that all of the cancerrelated deaths, almost 25-30 per cent are due to tobacco, as many as 30-35 per cent are linked to diet, about 15-20 per cent are due to infections, and the remaining percentage is due to other factors like radiation, stress, physical activity, environmental pollutants etc,” the report says.
Here are five ways to lower your risk of cancer, according to Dr Dadhwal.
Daily exercise
The risk of cancer can be reduced by indulging in regular physical activity. Exercise is proven to decrease the risk of numerous types of cancer such as colon and breast cancer. This will also help improve your overall wellbeing. Dr Dadhwal said that exercise
For a long, running has been considered to be the ultimate physical activity that can help one achieve their fitness goals. But running also involves keeping certain things in mind — like pace, duration, suitability, and safety — to ensure optimum results. As such, what should one consider when taking up running? Rather than running at a greater pace and soon feeling out of breath, the idea should be to run for longer at a slower or moderate pace, suggests Dr Sudhir Kumar, a neurologist, adding that such running is “ideal.”
Responding to a Twitter user’s experience of reducing his pace from 7.05 to 7.45 minutes pace per kilometer and, therefore increasing the run time by 10 minutes, which resulted in his heart rate dropping to 143, Dr Kumar tweeted, “Great going; it will help you, in the long run, to be fitter and healthier. Pace thrills (but kills) — true for running as well. For maximising health-related benefits, run slower and run lesser.”
Taking a cue, we reached out to experts to understand how paying attention to the pace makes a difference to not just your goal but also your heart rate and endurance levels.
These 5 lifestyle changes will help lower your risk of cancer
including cauliflower, Brussels sprouts and broccoli have cancer-fighting qualities. Dr Dadhwal also recommends eating five types of fruits and four types of vegetables with different colours every day.
Quit tobacco
Tobacco use is responsible for one-third of all cancer deaths, according to a study in the National Library of Medicine. Specifically, cigarette smoking causes 85 per cent of all lung cancers with secondhand smoking exposure in nonsmokers being the additional cause. Quitting smoke is the best way to lower your risk of cancer, especially oral, lung, bladder, pancreas and throat cancer. “Smoking is not only a threat for the smokers but for the passive smokers as well,” said Dr Dadhwal.
Reduce alcohol consumption
“The exact cause of cancer is not known, but the growth of a cancerous tumour mainly happens because of low immunity. Foreign cancer cells can invade the body and not be detected if one’s immunity is low,” said Dr Leena Dadhwal, Oncologist, Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute
also produces feel-good hormones called endorphins which can help with developing a healthy immune system. “At least 40 minutes of moderate exercise daily, such as fast cycling, brisk walking, swimming or yoga is recommended. However, it is advisable to practice mindful exercising, where one concentrates on their movement, limbs, and breathing, instead of having any distractions,” she added. She also noted that it is better to exercise in the
day outdoors to get vitamin D than in the evening when plants release carbon dioxide which can be harmful if inhaled.
Healthy diet
A healthy diet is essential to reduce your risk of cancer. “A diet rich in vitamins and minerals, containing antioxidants can help protect against cancer, while red meats and processed foods should be consumed less,” said Dr Dadhwal. Cruciferous vegetables
Excessive alcohol can increase the risk of different types of cancer, such as colon, liver and breast cancer. “According to studies, 30 ml and 60 ml alcohol intake for women and men respectively is acceptable daily. However, more research needs to be done to estimate the exact amount of alcohol which can be consumed,” said Dr Dadhwal. She added that even though limited alcohol will not cause cancer, even a few drops of it can lead to other health problems, including heart and liver disease.
Protect exposure from the sun
To prevent skin cancer, it is important to protect yourself from the sun. “Use sunscreen of a minimum of SPF 30, wear full clothes and try not to step out in the sun during the middle of the day as sun rays are strongest,” said Dr Dadhwal. It is also essential to spot any changes in your skin such as the development of moles. Get them checked by a dermatologist.
and weaknesses of the body. “If you are prone to fluctuations in blood pressure, its better to keep strenuous workouts at bay. Instead, choose something light like walking. There have been examples of many people who have lost kilos after just walking for an hour or two consistently every single day. Keep your pace limited and talk to your doctor or an expert about what should be the ideal method of exercising for you,” Dr Dutta told.
Referring to the recent spike in incidents of people collapsing while working out due to over-exercising, Dr RR Dutta, HOD- internal medicine, Paras Hospitals, Gurugram said that exertion of any kind is not healthy, let alone speedy runs.
“Pace is good and can encourage your adrenaline rush but it can come with a cost. For someone with high blood pressure, running fast can create complicated challenges,” he said. According to Dr Dutta, routine checkups are essential to understand the strengths
Notably, people who already run regularly “may not face” any issues with increased pace, according to Dr Subhendu Mohanty, interventional cardiologist, Sharda Hospital, Noida, provided they meet all health parameters. However, for beginners and amateurs who are not used to running, they should not run at fast pace to begin with. “It is harmful as it directly impacts your heart rate, which can require immediate medical intervention,” said Dr Mohanty. Maintaining a 7-8 minute pace per kilometre is suggested, Dr Dutta said, adding that it is pertinent to consult a doctor to understand your health condition and ask them to recommend an ideal pace that does not harm your heart health.
