'Human Remains' Recovered

From Wreckage Of Titanic Sub: US Coast Guard

That debris will now be taken aboard a US Coast Guard cutter to a US port for further analysis, the organization said.

Washington: Experts have recovered presumed human remains from what is left of the Titan sub that imploded during a dive to the Titanic wreck, with the death of five people, the US Coast Guard said Wednesday.

"United States medical professionals will conduct a formal analysis of presumed human remains that have been carefully recovered," the agency said. On board were British explorer Hamish Harding, French submarine expert PaulHenri Nargeolet, Pakistani-British tycoon Shahzada Dawood and his son Suleman, and Stockton Rush, CEO of the sub's operator OceanGate Expeditions. They presumably died instantly when the Titan sub, about the size of an SUV car, imploded under the crushing pressure of the North Atlantic at a depth of more than two miles.

WHO's cancer research agency to say Coca-Cola diet soda sweetener aspartame a possible carcinogen

One of the world's most common artificial sweeteners is set to be declared a possible carcinogen next month by a leading global health body, according to two sources with knowledge of the process, pitting it against the food industry and regulators.

Aspartame, used in products from CocaCola diet sodas to Mars' Extra chewing gum and some Snapple drinks, will be listed in July as "possibly carcinogenic to humans" for the first time by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), the World Health Organization's (WHO) cancer research arm, the sources said.

The IARC ruling, finalised earlier this month after a meeting of the group's external experts, is intended to assess whether something is a potential hazard or not, based on all the published evidence.

It does not take into account how much

of a product a person can safely consume. This advice for individuals comes from a separate WHO expert committee on food additives, known as JECFA (the

Joint WHO and Food and Agriculture Organization's Expert Committee on Food Additives), alongside determinations from national regulators.

However, similar IARC rulings in the past for different substances have raised concerns among consumers about their use, led to lawsuits, and pressured manufacturers to recreate recipes and swap to alternatives. That has led to criticism that the IARC's assessments can be confusing to the public.

JECFA, the WHO committee on additives, is also reviewing aspartame use this year. Its meeting began at the end of June and it is due to announce its findings on the same day that the IARC makes public its decision – on July 14.

Amtrak train derails after hitting truck in California

According to her manager, the global popstar's infection was "serious" and led to "a several day stay in the ICU

Madonna has postponed her world tour after being taken to a hospital's intensive care unit (ICU) with a serious bacterial infection.

According to her manager, the global popstar's infection was "serious" and led to "a several day stay in the ICU". He added a full recovery is expected. In a statement, Guy Oseary said Madonna's health is improving, but she is still under medical care.

Madonna, 64, was expected to launch her 84-date tour next month. She is believed to be receiving treatment at a hospital in New York City, US media reports.

The pop icon aimed to celebrate the 40th anniversary of her breakout single, Holiday, by embarking on her first ever greatest hits tour. Dubbed the Celebration Tour, this would be the singer's return to arenas and stadiums after her experimental, theatre-based Madame X shows in 2019 and 2020. Some of those performances were called off due to the star's knee and hip injuries.

A Delta aeroplane landed safely without its front landing gear at the CharlotteDouglas International airport in North Carolina, the airline said. No injuries have been reported among the two pilots, flight attendants or 96 customers on board the flight.

The Boeing 717 remains on the runway following the mechanical issue, but all passengers have been evacuated. The flight had left from Atlanta earlier on Wednesday.

In a statement to the BBC, Delta airlines

called the morning's events a "rare occurrence" but said that Delta crews "train extensively to safely manage through many scenarios and flight 1092 landed safely without reported injuries". "Our focus is now to take care of our customers on this flight, including retrieving their bags and seeing them to their final destinations safely," Delta said.

In a statement posted to Twitter, the Charlotte airport said a runway remained closed following the "mechanical issue" with the Delta flight.

An Amtrak train carrying nearly 200 people derailed in southern California on Wednesday after colliding with a county water truck.

The truck driver was taken to a trauma centre with a head injury and 14 other people were taken to hospital with minor injuries. Officials said the accident could have been worse had the train cars fallen over once they came off the tracks. Those injured are expected to recover. All the passengers and 13 crew members were evacuated from the train after three of its seven cars veered off the tracks, said Ventura County Fire Department Captain Brian McGrath.

Mystery Line On Joe Biden's Face Caused By Sleep Device, Explains White House

The White House on Wednesday put to bed speculation about a mystery line on President Joe Biden's face, explaining that he has begun wearing a CPAP device to help ward off sleep apnea.

The faint horizontal line, like a shallow indentation, was noticed by reporters seeing 80-year-old Biden up close earlier this week and again Wednesday as he departed the White House to give an economic speech in Chicago.

Deputy Press Secretary Andrew Bates

said President Biden was using a CPAP machine, referring to a widely used medical device to prevent snoring and the potentially damaging interruptions in breathing caused by sleep apnea. CPAPs include a mask with straps that cross the face.

Mr Bates said that President Biden has "disclosed his history with sleep apnea in thorough medical reports" since 2008.

"He used a CPAP machine last night, which is common for people with that history."

Chinese Spy Balloon Uses US Tech for Audio-Visual Intel Gathering

The Chinese spy balloon that passed over the US early this year used American technology that helped it collect audiovisual information, the Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday, citing preliminary findings from a closely held investigation.

Analysis from several US defense and intelligence agencies, found that the balloon carried commercially available US gear, along with more specialized Chinese sensors and other equipment to collect photographs, video and other information to transmit to China, the WSJ said, citing US officials.

Teenager's Death by Police Triggers

Overnight Unrest, 150 Arrested in France

A hundred and fifty people were arrested in France after a second night of unrest across the country, Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said on Thursday, following the fatal shooting by police of a 17-year-old boy during a traffic stop. The ministry said dozens of police officers were injured during the clashes. "A night of unbearable violence against symbols of the Republic: town halls, schools and police stations put ablaze or attacked. 150 arrests," Darmanin said on his Twitter account. Putin Thanks Russian Forces for Halting Civil War

President Vladimir Putin thanked Russia's army and security services for stopping a civil war breaking out in the world's largest country at the weekend by acting efficiently when faced with an armed mutiny by mercenaries heading towards Moscow.

"You have defended the constitutional order, the lives, security and freedom of our citizens. You have saved our Motherland from upheaval. In fact, you have stopped a civil war," President Putin said.

The findings support a conclusion that the craft was intended for spying, and not for weather monitoring as China had claimed, the report said. But the balloon did not seem to send data from its eight-day passage over Alaska, Canada and some other contiguous US states back to China, WSJ said.

The White House and the Federal Bureau of Investigation did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Russian General arrested over Wagner mutiny: Report

Moscow: (IANS) General Sergei Surovikin, the deputy commander of Russian military operations in Ukraine, has been arrested over his alleged involvement to the short-lived rebellion staged by the Wagner mercenary group last weekend, a local media report said. Although there was no official

confirmation of his arrest, The Moscow Times reported citing sources close to the Defence Ministry, saying that the "the situation with him (Surovikin) was not 'OK'". The General, who is also Commander of the Aerospace Forces, has not been seen in public since June 24, the day when Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin launched an armed rebellion against the country's military leadership. One of the sources told The Moscow Times that the arrest was carried out "in the context of Prigozhin". "Apparently, he (Surovikin) chose Prigozhin's side during the uprising." When asked about the General's whereabouts, the source replied: "We are not even commenting on this information through our internal channels."

Wuhan Researcher: China Engineered Coronavirus as Bioweapon

Protests and unrest erupted in the Paris region overnight after police shot dead a 17-year-old who failed to stop when ordered to by traffic police. Video circulating on social media shows a police officer pointing a gun at the driver of a car, before a gunshot is heard. The car then crashes to a stop. The teenager, named as Nahel, died of bullet wounds in the chest despite help from emergency services. The officer accused of shooting him has been detained on homicide charges.

The shooting triggered a series of protests on Tuesday night in Nanterre, the area just west of Paris where the teenager was killed. Some 31 people were arrested following the disorder.

Ukraine war: Countdown has begun to end of Putin, say Kyiv officials

A researcher in Wuhan has claimed that China deliberately engineered coronavirus as a "bioweapon". The explosive claim was made by Chao Shan in an exclusive interview with Jennifer

Zeng, a member of the International Press Association, who provides first-hand information and unique insights about China and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). Mr Chao said he and his colleagues were tasked with identifying the most effective strain for spreading among various species, including humans. The full interview has been posted by Ms Jennifer on her blog. She has also posted a video on her Twitter handle where the human rights activist describes what Mr Chao, a researcher at Wuhan Institute of Virology, told her.

Attention in the Ukrainian capital has been fixed squarely on the mutiny of the Wagner Group, its leader Yevgeny Prigozhin, and its consequences for Vladimir Putin and the conduct of the war in Ukraine.

The drama over the border in Russia has hardened the view in Kyiv that Mr Putin's time as Russia's president is coming to an end.

"I think the countdown has started," said Andriy Yermak, President Zelensky's closest adviser. At a briefing in Kyiv, he looked back to the year that Russia first invaded Ukraine, annexing the Crimean Peninsula.

UN Humanitarians receive only 20% funds this year

United Nations: (IANS) The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said that it has received only 20 per cent of the $54.8 billion needed to aid people globally this year.

"These funding gaps have real consequences on millions of people's food insecurity, health and protection, among others, and we encourage donors to continue to contribute generously to the humanitarian response plans," Xinhua news agency quoted the UN body as saying in its latest update.

"With needs growing exponentially, funding is struggling to

keep pace."

At the year's mid-point, the humanitarian office said 362 million people need relief, 13 million more than those needing help at the beginning of the year. "This means that one in 22 people globally now requires assistance," OCHA said. "Unequal funding across emergencies and sectors has challenged our ability to respond to the surging needs." The office said underfunded crises include Myanmar, Afghanistan, Burkina Faso, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Somalia and Venezuela.

Rahul Gandhi Takes Chopper to Manipur District Amid Convoy Interruption”

Modi Shifts Focus from Terrorism to Space and FDI in US Visit, says Nadda

BJP chief J P Nadda Thursday said agreements on space, FDI and tech support were signed during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to the USA, unlike in the past when PMs used to discuss terrorism during such tours.

Imphal: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi convoy was stopped by the police today on the way to Churachandpur, one of the worsthit districts in the Manipur ethnic violence. Mr Gandhi landed in Imphal earlier today and was on his way to Churachandpur where he plans to meet people displaced by the ethnic strife at relief camps.

Police said that Rahul Gandhi’s convoy was stopped at Bishnupur, 20 kilometres from Imphal, over security concerns. The Congress leader is now heading back to Imphal and will take a helicopter instead of travelling to Churachandpur by road.

Sehwag Predicts NonSubcontinent Teams in World Cup Semis

Addressing a rally in Rajasthan’s Bharatpur, he also targeted the rival parties and claimed that the BJP has eliminated dynastic and vote-bank politics. “While others have become parties of families, in BJP the party is family,” Nadda said. He said, “Earlier, Indian prime ministers used to discuss terrorism issues during US visits. PM Modi signs agreements on space, FDI, tech support.” The BJP national president claimed that now while talking about India, no one refers to Pakistan. “Under PM Modi’s leadership, we have achieved the ability to keep the country safe,” he said.

Before addressing the rally, Nadda

inaugurated the BJP’s newly constructed party office in Bharatpur in the presence of former Rajasthan chief minister Vasundhara Raje and other leaders. Earlier in the day, leader of Opposition

Sibal Slams PM Modi over Uniform Civil Code Remarks, Questions Timing

in the Rajasthan Assembly Rajendra Rathore, while interacting with reporters in Bharatpur, said, “Uniform civil code is the need of the day.

Gujarat ATS uncovers nationwide network of ISKP terror group

Recently, former India opener Virender Sehwag gave his take on which four teams will be qualifying for the knockout stage in the ODI World Cup 2023.

“If I have to pick four teamsAustralia, England, India and Pakistan. These are the semifinalists. Australia and England will surely be there because the kind of cricket they are playing - they don’t play conventional shots, only unconventional - these 2 teams are pretty good at it. Also, England and Australia are the two away teams who can play better cricketer in the sub-continent,” said Sehwag during the ICC event.

India’s opening match against Australia will be a tricky one where the hosts would look to avenge their recent defeat in the ICC World Test Championship final against the Kangaroos. The contests against New Zealand, England and South Africa could prove to be decisive in defining the fate of Rohit Sharma’s men.

Former law minister Kapil Sibal has taken a swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his remarks on a Uniform Civil Code (UCC), asking how “uniform” is his proposal and does it cover Hindus, tribals and the northeast. Addressing a gathering of BJP workers in Bhopal on Tuesday, Modi made a strong pitch for a UCC, saying the Constitution calls for equal rights for all citizens.

The prime minister also accused the opposition of using the UCC issue to mislead and provoke Muslims.

In a tweet on Wednesday, Sibal, a

Rajya Sabha MP, said, “Prime Minister: Pushes for Uniform Civil Code, accuses Opposition of instigating Muslims. Questions: 1) Why now after 9 years? 2024? 2) How ‘uniform’ is your proposal: Covers : Hindus, Tribals, North-East, All? 3) Every day your Party targets Muslims. Why? Concerned now!” The Law Commission had, on June 14, invited views from all the stakeholders, including members of the public and recognised religious organisations, on the politically sensitive issue. Earlier, the 21st Law Commission, the term of which ended in August 2018, had examined the issue and solicited the views of all stakeholders on two occasions. Subsequently, a consultation paper on “Reforms of Family Law” was issued in 2018.

Ahmedabad: (IANS) The Gujarat Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) has uncovered a nationwide network of the Islamic State of Khorasan Province (ISKP) terror group following several arrests.

Following the recent arrest of a woman in Surat, another person, identified as Khadija, has now been apprehended in Hyderabad.

The investigation has revealed her deep connections to previously apprehended terrorists linked to the ISKP. The efforts of Gujarat ATS in scrutinising Khadija’s call record have led to the identification of multiple other individuals involved in the network.

Plan For 2024 Polls, Reshuffle Discussed At Late-Night BJP Meet: Sources

New Delhi: Senior BJP leaders held a meeting last night to discuss the strategy for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, sources said. The meeting, held at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence, was attended by Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP President JP Nadda and other senior party leaders. The meeting comes just days after PM Modi returned from the US. Sources also said that a major reshuffle may have been discussed at the meeting that lasted for over five hours. The party is yet to release an official

statement on the meeting that came against the backdrop of Mr Shah, Mr Nadda and BJP general secretary (organisation) BL Santhosh holding marathon deliberations over organisational and political issues. In his address to BJP workers, Prime Minister Modi has already announced that

the government would push to implement a Uniform Civil Code nationwide, an agenda that has always been part of BJP’s manifestos.

A loss in Karnataka has pushed the BJP to tweak its campaign template for the next round of state elections due later this year. Four crucial states are going to polls -- Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Telangana and Chhattisgarh. Of these, only Madhya Pradesh is ruled by the BJP. The party is hoping to cash in on the revolving door trend in Rajasthan and anti-incumbency in two others to work in its favour.

Canada removes limit on study programmes' length for work permit holders

Now work permit holders in Canada can study full-time or part-time until the expiry of their work permit without needing any study permit -- a major temporary change in policy for three years to keep one ahead of the curve and enhance his or her career prospects.

Chandigarh:(IANS) Now work permit holders in Canada can study full-time or part-time until the expiry of their work permit without needing any study permit -- a major temporary change in policy for three years to keep one ahead of the curve and enhance his or her career prospects. The Canadian government on Tuesday introduced a public policy that will be beneficial for immigrants, including those from India, to boost their career, job prospects, and chances of permanent residency.

“Every year, thousands of temporary foreign workers bring their skills to Canada, helping to drive our economy and fill critical labour market gaps,” said the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). While they play an important role in Canada’s prosperity, foreign workers sometimes face barriers in the types of study programmes

in which they can enrol to pursue their dreams and create new opportunities.

Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, Sean Fraser announced a new temporary measure that removes the limit on the length of the study programmes that temporary foreign workers can enrol in without a study permit.

Starting immediately, foreign workers will have the opportunity to seek additional training and education that can help them in their careers. Prior to this change,

foreign workers could study while working, but only in programmes of six months or less. For longer programmes, they had to apply for a separate study permit. This has been a barrier for those who wanted to improve their education and receive more training, including those needing to upskill or validate their foreign credentials through certain programmes. With this new three-year temporary measure, foreign workers can study full-time or part-time while their work permits are valid or until the expiration of the policy, with no restrictions on the length of the programme. The temporary measure applies to those who hold a valid work permit or who have submitted an application to renew their work permit on or before June 7, and are authorised to work. If a foreign worker wishes to study longer than the duration of their work permit, they still need to apply for a study permit.“Temporary foreign workers are

US editor apologies to Indian Americans, Ramaswamy for ‘racist’ cartoon

New York: (IANS) A US newspaper editor has apologised to Indian Americans for publishing an “offensive” cartoon that played on stereotypes of the community while trying to criticise Vivek Ramaswamy who is seeking the Republican Party’s presidential nomination.

“Racist and hateful ideas, words or images have no place in our publications, much less our society”, Tom Martin, the executive editor of the Quad City Times said in the apology to the community and Ramaswamy published in his paper on Friday. He said that the cartoonist, Leo Kelly, has been banished from the newspaper. But Ramaswamy came to the defence of the cartoonist in a letter

Indian national jailed for biting off man's earlobe in Singapore

Singapore: (IANS) A 37-year-old Indian national in Singapore has been sentenced to five months in jail and fined SGD 1,000 (US$740) for biting off the earlobe of a fellow Indian who stayed with him.

Manohar Sankar, a construction worker from Tamil Nadu, pleaded guilty to one count each of voluntarily causing grievous hurt and using abusive words against the 47-year-old victim in 2020, Channel News Asia reported. The court heard that in a drunken stupor, Sankar, who stayed at a workers' apartment in Upper Serangoon Road along with the victim, started uttering vulgarities in Tamil and cursed the victim's mother on the night of May 19, 2020.

published in the paper. “Let's not go further or see people get fired over it; the cartoonist should in no way be 'cancelled.' We are all human”, he wrote.

“I'm empathetic to people who make mistakes once in a while”, he wrote while accepting the editor's apology.

The cartoon sought to show Republicans as bigots with whom Ramaswamy was aligned, but it backfired as it was someone opposed to that party and

the candidate who used the anti-Indian epithet. The Quad-City Times is a regional newspaper based in Davenport, Iowa, which also covers parts of neighbouring Illinois. It is owned by the media company Lee Enterprises which publishes over 70 newspapers across the US, including the Dispatch-Argus, which also published the cartoon. “We apologise today for letting such an image slip through our editorial process and into our opinion page Wednesday in the form of a political cartoon," Martin wrote. He added: “The cartoon, while intended to criticise racist ideas and epithets, uses a phrase that is racist and insensitive to members of our Indian American community."

incredibly important for the Canadian economy, and many have aspirations that go far beyond the work that initially brings them to Canada. With this policy in place, we hope to empower foreign nationals to improve their skills in order to meet their career goals and achieve their dreams, while providing a future potential source of talent for our labour market,” Immigration Minister Fraser said. “By removing barriers to skills development, we open the door to more foreign-trained doctors and nurses to help take care of our loved ones and support our healthcare system. We also provide a path for construction labourers to become tradespersons, and strengthen our communities and build new homes. This immigration measure helps employers, workers, and our economy by addressing critical labour shortages. This is welcome news for all parties involved.”

US Introduces Renewable H-1B Visas to Boost India's Service Exports: SEPC

Services Export Promotion Council said that the decision would allow easier onsite client engagement by domestic IT professionals

The US announcement to introduce in-country renewable of H-1B visas will help swift movement of Indian IT professionals and promote services exports, SEPC said on Wednesday. SEPC said that the decision would allow easier on-site client engagement by domestic IT professionals.

New Delhi: (IANS) Beginning July 1, Indian graduates studying in Australian tertiary institutions will be able to apply for work without visa sponsorship for up to eight years.

In addition, the allowable work-hour cap for international students will be increased from 40 hours to 48 hours per

Coming under this pact, the Mobility Arrangement for Talented Earlyprofessionals Scheme (MATES) will make 3,000 annual spots available for young professionals from India, allowing them to spend two years in the country without requiring visa sponsorship.

As a temporary visa programme, MATES includes graduates from recognised Indian universities with degrees in specialised fields of study.

"When Indian IT professionals can quickly travel to client locations abroad, they can better understand client requirements, build stronger relationships, and deliver tailored solutions. This direct engagement can lead to increased client satisfaction, repeat business, and ultimately, higher IT exports," SEPC Chairman Sunil H Talati said. He said that as the US is the major market for India's IT exports, this development will have a significant positive impact on the export of IT services from India. "The earlier estimates for IT exports growth have been in the range of 8-12 per cent however with this particular push the exports growth in IT can further stride in the range of 13-15 per cent," Talati said.

K’taka govt to handover Bitcoin scandal case to CID for re-investigation

HiIndia Newsdesk

Bengaluru: (IANS) The Congress government in Karnataka is set to handover the the bitcoin scandal case to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for re-investigation, sources said.

The sources confirmed that the state government is likely to issue an official order in this regard in two days.

B. Dayanand, the Police Commissioner for Bengaluru, has written to Karnataka DGP Alok Mohan and requested to handover the investigation of the case to the CID.

Recently, state Home Minister Dr. G. Parameshwara had stated that he would get the scam re-investigated.

The sources said that now it is up to Chief Minister Siddaramaiha to give a green signal for the state police chief to handover the case.

The scandal had taken place after the arrest of international hacker Srikanth, aka Sriki, by the CCB police in Bengaluru.

It was alleged the former JP leaders had minted huge sums of money by allowing

him to commit the scandal while he was custody in 2020 for allegedly selling drugs.

Probe has revealed that the accused had siphoned off Rs 11 crore by hacking into online gaming companies and government web portals.

He then converted the money into bitcoins and carried out drug peddling in Bengaluru.

Karnataka Congress in-charge Randeep Singh Surjewala had attacked the Centre and former Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai over the bitcoin scandal.

"What is the role and responsibility of the Basavaraj Bommai? (who was the home minister incharge at the relevant time) and others in the state government?.

"The layers of the Bitcoin scam are finally being unearthed. Let India's Home minister and Chief Minister Bommai answer.

FBI in India to investigate India's biggest Bitcoins scam cover up under Karnataka BJP government. If so, release details of the investigation and suspects including political people,” he had stated.

"How many Bitcoins were stolen? and of what value? Who in Karnataka is involved? Were the stolen Bitcoins transferred from the wallet of the arranged hacker Sri Krishna?

"Whether the 'Whale Alerts' reflecting the transfer of the 14,682 stolen Bitfinex Bitcoins valued at Rs 5,240 crors on the two dates December 1, 2020 and 14 April, 2021 when Shri Krishna was in custody has any correlation?

Indian-American jailed for smuggling Indian nationals into US using Uber

New York, June 28 (IANS) A 49-year-old Indian-American man was sentenced to more than three years in prison for illegally bringing hundreds of Indian nationals across the border from Canada and then to locations in the midwest and beyond, using ride-hailing major Uber. Rajinder Pal Singh, aka Jaspal Gill of Elk Grove in California, was sentenced on Tuesday at the District Court in Seattle for Conspiracy to Transport and Harbor Certain Aliens for Profit and Conspiracy to Commit Money Laundering. Singh pleaded guilty in February, admitting that he took in more than $500,000 as a key member of a smuggling ring that used Uber to transport people illegally.

Some members from the Indian American community gathered outside an Indian restaurant in NY to protest against the violence in Manipur.

Led by Dr Anna George, Associate Professor at Molloy University, the protest gathering saw 23 eminent community leaders and human rights activists who expressed concerns about the violence in the state and the state of Christians.

Dr George addressed the gathering, and she said, “What is taking place in Manipur is a horrible violation of human rights and religious freedom,” she said, pointing out that over 200 churches were burnt down, about 100 or more people were killed, and about 80,000 people were displaced. “They are finding shelter in the forest; they have no homes to return to, so we must decide to do something to help the victims in Manipur.”

The meeting passed a resolution condemning all the violence. Participants expressed their disappointment at the Central government for not being prompt to arrest and punish radical elements.

“Over a four-year period, Mr Singh arranged for more than 800 people to be smuggled into the US across the northern border and into Washington State,” said Acting US Attorney Tessa M Gorman. She said that Singh’s participation in the conspiracy saddled those smuggled with crushing debt of as much as $70,000. According to records filed in the case, as

Rs 46,000 Cr for Rajasthan Tied to BJP Votes, Alleges Centre

Hours after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s strong pitch for a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the country, India’s top Muslim body, the All India Muslim Personal Law Board, held an emergency meeting last night.

Prime Minister Modi, addressing BJP workers in Bhopal yesterday, said two laws in the same country would not work, asserting that the Constitution mentions equal rights for all citizens and even Supreme Court rulings had

called for uniform laws. Muslims, he said, were being instigated by parties prone to vote-bank politics, adding that the BJP had decided it would not adopt the path of appeasement. The Muslim law board’s meeting was held virtually and lasted for about three hours. They discussed the legal aspects of the UCC in the context of PM Modi’s remarks, which are seen to prioritise an agenda that has always been part of BJP manifestos.

The Muslim body has decided to submit its views to the Law Commission, taking into account the points made by lawyers and experts.

'Do You Consider Countrymen Brainless?' Court Slams 'Adipurush' Makers

Lucknow: The Allahabad High Court today pulled up makers of the film 'Adipurush' over its dialogues that have infuriated a large section of the audience, who accuse it of 'hurting religious sentiments'. The court directed co-writer Manoj Muntashir Shukla to be made a party in the case, and issued notice directing him to respond within a week.

The court was hearing a petition demanding a ban on 'Adipurush', which claims to be a mythological action film based on the Hindu epic Ramayana. "The nature of dialogues in the film is a big issue. Ramayana is a paragon for us. People read Ramcharitmanas before leaving home," it said, adding that films shouldn't touch certain things.

"Agar hum log ispar bhi aankh band kar len kyonki yeh kaha jaata hai ki yeh dharm ke log bade sahishnu (tolerant) hain to kya uska test liya jayega? (If we close our eyes on this issue too, because

Terming it a "very serious matter", it questioned what the censor board did about it. "If we are tolerant, then will that also be tested?" the court said.

it is said that the people of this religion are very tolerant, will it be put to test as well?)," the bench remarked. The Allahabad High Court questioned whether the film certification authority, popularly called the censor board, fulfilled its responsibility.

"Apply To Hindus First": MK Stalin's Party Slams PM On Uniform Civil Code

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi's pitch for a uniform civil code has been vehemently questioned by the Congress and its ally, the DMK. The ruling party of Tamil Nadu had contended that a uniform code should first be applied to the Hindus, who will then have to allow people from all castes to pray in temples.

"Uniform Civil Code should be first introduced in the Hindu religion. Every person including Scheduled Castes and Tribes should be allowed to perform pooja in any temple in the country. We don't want UCC (uniform Civil Code) only because the Constitution has given protection to every religion," said DMK's TKS Elangovan.

"He (PM Modi) should first answer about poverty, price rise and unemployment in the country," read a statement from Congress general secretary KC Venugopal.

"Every person including Scheduled Castes and Tribes should be allowed to perform pooja in any temple in the country," said DMK's TKS Elangovan.

"He never speaks on Manipur issue. The whole state is burning. He is just distracting people from all these issues," he added.

Pitching for the implementation of

Uniform Civil Code, which has been part of BJP's election manifestos, PM Modi said today that it doesn't work to have "different set of rules for different members of a family" and a country can't run on two laws.

If "Triple Talaq" is an inalienable part of Islam, why it isn't practised in Muslim-majority countries like Pakistan, Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Qatar, Jordan and Syria, he questioned.

Citing the example of Egypt, where he was on a visit last week, PM Modi said the country had abolished Triple Talaq 80-90 years ago, even though 90 per cent of its population comprise Sunni Muslims. Slamming the opposition, he said, "Whoever talks in favour of Triple Talaq, whoever advocates it, those vote bank hungry people are doing a great injustice to Muslim daughters. Triple talaq doesn't just do injustice to daughters. It is beyond this; the whole family get ruined".

"It's good that people did not harm the law and order situation after watching the film. Lord Hanuman and Sita have been shown like they are nothing. These things should have been removed from the very beginning. Some scenes seem to be of "A" (adult) category. It's very difficult to watch such films," the court observed.

Terming it a "very serious matter", it questioned what the censor board did about it.

The Deputy Solicitor General informed the court that the objectionable dialogues have been removed from the film, to which the court asked the Deputy SG to ask the censor board what it has been doing.

"That alone won't work. What will you do with the scenes? Seek instructions, then we will definitely do whatever we want to do... In case the exhibition of the film is stopped, then the people whose feelings have been hurt, will get relief," the court said.

CAG audit into 'irregularities' in 'reconstruction' of Delhi CM residence: Raj Niwas officials

The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India will conduct a special audit into alleged "irregularities and violations" in the "reconstruction" of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's residence, Raj Niwas officials said on Tuesday.

The Union home ministry has recommended the special CAG audit taking note of a May 24 letter by Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena which pointed out the "reconstruction" "gross and prima facie financial

irregularities" in the "reconstruction" of the chief minister's official residence, they claimed. No immediate reaction was available from the CM's office or the ruling Aam Aadmi Party, which has locked horns with the BJP over the issue since it first came to light in April. While the AAP claimed it was a dilapidated structure built in 1942 and needed repairs, the BJP has alleged irregularities and pressed for a probe.

Indian American Doctor accused of Sexual Battery, Arrested at SFO

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today, while addressing party workers under the party’s “Mera Booth Sabse Majboot” campaign in poll-bound Madhya Pradesh, questioned if ‘triple talaq’ was inalienable from Islam, why it isn’t practised in Muslim-majority countries like Egypt, Indonesia, Qatar, Jordan, Syria, Bangladesh, and Pakistan. Batting for the Uniform Civil Code, he said it doesn’t work to have “different set of rules for different members of a family” and a country can’t run on two laws. Egypt, whose 90 per cent population is Sunni Muslims, abolished triple talaq 80 to 90 years ago, he pointed out.

“Those who advocate for triple talaq, these people hungry

for a vote bank, are doing grave injustice to Muslim daughters,” the PM said.

He said triple talaq doesn’t just concern women, but destroys entire families too. When a woman, who the family marries off to someone with a lot of hope, is sent back after triple talaq, the parents and brothers are pained with concern about the woman.

“Some people want to hang the noose of triple talaq over Muslim daughters to have a free hand to keep oppressing them,” PM Modi said, adding that these are the people who support triple talaq.

“This is why Muslim sisters and daughters, wherever I go, stand with the BJP and Modi,” he added.

White House Condemns ‘Harassment’ Of Reporter Who Asked PM Rights Question

New Delhi: The White House has denounced what the Wall Street Journal has called the “intense online harassment” of its reporter Sabrina Siddiqui, who had asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi a question on democracy in India during his joint press conference with President Joe Biden in the US last week.

Top official John Kirby, in response to the Wall Street Journal’s question on its reporter, said the White House was “aware of the reports of that harassment”.

The Wall Street Journal said since she asked the question, Ms Siddiqui had been subjected to “some

intense online harassment from people inside India”. She was also being targeted, in part, because of her Muslim faith, said the newspaper.

“It’s unacceptable. And we absolutely condemn any harassment of journalists anywhere under any circumstances. That’s just - that’s completely unacceptable. And it’s antithetical to the very principles of democracy that - you’re right - were on display last week during the state visit,” said Mr Kirby, who is the White House National Security Council Coordinator for Strategic Communications.

Talking about the same Kangana shared: “Through the course of filming ‘Emergency’, learning about the events that unfolded in 1975 gave me a deeper understanding of Indian history. People call it the darkest phase in Indian history, but a lot of people don’t understand why Indira ji made that decision. With the film, I aspire to bring that side of the story out too. Find out all about their reunion, what kept them excited about the show, their expectations from season 3 and more! Speaking about the web series and their reaction on being approached for it, Barun Sobti told mid-day.com, "There were terrific crime thrillers coming out from the US at that time. There were a few attempts made in the movies that weren't very good and such things weren't coming out in India. When I read (the script of) 'Asur' my mind was blown. The first thing I thought was 'I don't know why they want to cast me.' That's all I thought."

Gaurav Arora added, "When Tanveer the producer of season one approached me with the story, within the first five minutes I said 'I'm doing this show.' Now we have access to content from across the world and 'Asur' matches

that. It's a thriller and what's most special is that it has got a strong Indian flavour. It sets us apart on a world stage and that was most exciting for me, besides the people associated with it."

Ridhi Dogra admitted at first she didn't understand the novel concept of the show, she said, "I honestly didn't understand the show when I read it but I went with my friend's (Barun Sobti) conviction. I told him I have tested for this character in a show he was doing and he told me it's terrific. He's such a picky actor that I said, if he's saying this I will go ahead with it. It's not like you get the whole script when you give an audition, you only know your part and slowly get to know the rest during readings. By then I was already in! Now having done two seasons I call Gaurav Shukla the creator of the show 'desi Tarantino' I feel like he is the real Asur and I don't know how his mind works." Barun added, "I was the first one to come on board."

We were told only big-scale films are working

Vicky Kaushal

That has been the industry’s belief going by films’ performance over the past six months. But the success of Zara Hatke Zara Bachke (ZHZB) has busted this myth, as it runs strong even in its fourth week. The Vicky Kaushal and Sara Ali Khan-starrer has reportedly earned R80 crore, its run unhindered even by the release of magnum opus Adipurush. The leading man admits he didn’t foresee its success, especially in today’s uncertain times. “When the film was releasing, we were quite nervous. We wondered, will people give us a chance? We were told only big-scale spectacles are working. Our film was about a middle-class family from Indore; there was no action or big-scale extravaganza. But then, its success reminds us that the central idea—of the joys and sorrows of a middleclass family—was powerful. It reiterates that we must follow our instinct,” he smiles. One of the biggest charms of the Laxman Utekar-directed romantic comedy is the chemistry between the lead pair. “With Sara, you don’t need any ice-breaking. You meet her and instantly feel like you’ve known her a long time. She is such a pure soul.”

Tillotama Shome The audience fought for me to be on the poster

I thought either I was hallucinating or the audience! My work hasn’t been exposed to such numbers before,” exclaims Tillotama Shome, whose performance in The Night Manager was loved by the audience when it dropped online in February. Four months since its release, the spotlight is still firmly on the actor, who plays a focused R&AW officer with a quirky sense of humour in the thriller. “I’m used to finishing my work and moving on, and not having journalists interview me because they would interview mainstream actors,” she laughs.

Shome now awaits the release of the second part of the Disney+ Hotstar series led by Aditya Roy Kapur, Anil Kapoor and Sobhita Dhulipala. In a big win, the streamer and makers have ensured she not only features in the new posters with her co-stars, but also gets her stand-alone poster. This move comes after the audience criticised the makers for not including her—a pivotal character in the adaptation of the British original of the same name—on the poster, the first time around. “The media asked about it and so did the audience, that’s why the Hotstar team put me on the poster of the second part. I got this position because of the audience’s love. The audience has felt connected with my work, and fought for me to be on the poster.” I remember Irrfan Khan telling me once, ‘You will not get anything by crying like Meena Kumari! Learn to love life. If you aren’t getting work, do something else with your time.’ Thanks to him and people around me, I have an enriching life.”

she lashed out at former US President Barack Obama, questioning his comments on Indian Muslims because the US under his rule had “bombed six Muslim-majority nations”.

“The Honourable Prime Minister himself, in the press conference in the US, has said how his government works on the ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas’ principle and doesn’t discriminate against any community. But the fact remains that when people join in this debate and highlight issues which are non-issues in a way,” Ms Sitharaman said at a news conference.

A technology and regulatory attorney, Subramanyam served as a White House advisor to former President Barack Obama in 2015, where he led a task force on technology policy that addressed job creation, IT modernisation, and regulating emerging technology.

“He asked Nadda ji how it is going here, and Nadda ji told him that party leaders were reaching out to people with the report card of the nine years of his government, and the country is happy,” BJP MP Manoj Tiwari told reporters when asked what the prime minister asked them after meeting them at the airport.

Wagner mercenary group seize military facilities in 2 Russian cities

Moscow, June 24 (IANS) Amid an alleged rebellion, the Russian Wagner mercenary group on Saturday claimed to have seized military facilities in the cities of Rostov and Voronezh, despite President Vladimir Putin’s order to neutralise the mercenaries.

In a social media post, the group’s chief Yevgeny Prigozhin said that he was in Rostov-on-Don, in southern Russia

close to the Ukraine border, and that his forces have control of military facilities and the airfield, reports CNN. He pledged to blockade Rostov and move on to Moscow if Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu and top general Valery Gerasimov did not meet him in the city, where Russia’s Southern Military District is headquartered.

Toronto, June 24 (IANS) With new Indian students increasingly becoming victims of ignorance about Canadian laws, the Indo-Canada Chamber of Commerce (ICCC) is taking up the matter with the Immigration Minister to address the problem.

Murarilal Thapliyal, president of the oldest Indo-Canadian organization, says: “Rampant ignorance among Indian students about Canadian laws is costing these students and the IndoCanadian heavily. They (students) are

dying in road accidents and drowning in ponds because they don’t know/ heed local laws. They are falling victim to depression and some committing suicide because they don’t know whom to turn to it.”

Since agents in India do most paperwork for them, these students and their parents know very little about Canadian laws and rules.

“The Indo-Canada Chamber is urging the immigration minister to add an acknowledgement form to admission forms for students.

Indian students coming to Canada and their parents must sign an acknowledgement form, saying that they have read basic Canadian laws and that they know the consequences of their violation,” says Murarilal. This acknowledgement, he says, should be a precondition for admission to Canadian colleges.

The Wagner group also claimed that said it had taken control of Russian military facilities in the second city of Voronezh, saying “the army switches to the side of the people”.

Earlier, the Governor of Voronezh oblast said that “a convoy of military equipment is moving along the M-4 Don Federal Highway”, which connects the city and Rostov-on-Don.

Gavaskar Criticizes Selectors for Dropping Pujara, Ignoring Sarfaraz

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has lashed out at the national selectors for making Cheteshwar Pujara the “scapegoat” and ignoring prolific domestic scorer Sarfaraz Khan for the two Tests in the West Indies next month. Referring to Sarfaraz’s non-selection, Gavaskar questioned the logic behind having the Ranji Trophy if performance in the country’s premier domestic tournament is not looked into while picking the Indian red-ball teams instead of taking into account the players’ record in the IPL. “Sarfaraz Khan has been scoring at an average of 100 in all past three seasons. What does he have to do to be picked in the squad? He might not be in the XI, but you pick him in the team,” Gavskar said .

President Toni Preckwinkle Unveils Early Budget Projection For Fiscal Year 2024

Cook County, IL - Cook County Board

President Toni Preckwinkle has unveiled the preliminary forecast for the county's Fiscal Year 2024 budget, revealing an estimated gap of $85.6 million. This represents a significant decrease from the peak of the pandemic, when the gap reached $409.6 million. Notably, the projected gap of $3 million in the hospital system is the lowest seen during President Preckwinkle's administration. Despite economic risks and budgeting challenges, Cook County has managed to improve its bond rating, strengthen reserve funds, and implement equity programs and pandemic relief efforts without raising taxes.

Cook County has received over $1 billion in direct funding from the federal government through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA). The county has developed a comprehensive and equitable spending plan, with around 70% of the federal funds earmarked for community programs over the next three-to-five years. These investments prioritize equity and encompass

initiatives such as guaranteed income programs, economic development grants for small businesses, housing and utility bill assistance, and medical debt relief of up to $1 billion. Additional funding will be allocated to healthcare, justice initiatives, violence prevention programs, infrastructure improvements, and environmental projects.

President Preckwinkle emphasized the county's strong fiscal position, achieved through years of hard work. Cook County plans to make significant investments in various areas in FY2024, including small business assistance, emergency rental programs, violence prevention, environmental improvements, infrastructure upgrades, economic development, and digital equity. The county has also made substantial contributions to pension funds and led pension reform legislation to ensure full funding of its pension obligations.

While Cook County is projected to end FY2023 with a positive net result of $214.7 million in the General Fund, FY2024 is expected to have a budget shortfall of $82.6 million, with revenues anticipated to be $41.2 million lower than the previous year. This reduction is attributed in part to decreased disbursements from the state's Personal Property Replacement Tax.

Despite the challenges, President Preckwinkle expressed pride in the county's financial foundation and commitment to equity, highlighting the transformative changes being pursued in historically marginalized communities. Cook County aims to build upon its progress and navigate the evolving economic climate in the upcoming fiscal year.

Chaiyya welcoming Modi?

TEXAS- A group of undocumented immigrants who sought sanctuary in churches to avoid deportation has reached a settlement with the Biden administration that will allow the women to stay in the U.S., at least for now. Under the settlement, the Biden administration has agreed to provide temporary protection from deportation for three years to Hilda Ramirez, Vicky Yulissa Chávez-Fino, Edith Espinal Moreno, and María Chavalán Sut. The women had taken sanctuary in churches in Texas, Utah, Ohio, and Virginia after being targeted for retaliation due to speaking out publicly about their cases.

During the Trump administration, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement had issued substantial civil fines, amounting to nearly half a million dollars in some cases, as part of a broader crackdown on illegal immigration. However, the Biden administration reversed this policy and stopped issuing fines. The settlement comes as a result of a lawsuit brought by the four women,

who alleged that they were targeted for speaking out. The settlement does not involve any monetary compensation for the immigrants, but it does provide an opportunity for Ramirez and two other women to reopen and dismiss their original immigration cases, allowing them a second chance to seek asylum or other protections in the U.S. The fourth woman is appealing her case. The settlement is seen as a significant step toward achieving permanent legal status for the women, providing them with safety and the potential for a path to citizenship. While the settlement has been praised by immigrant rights advocates, it has faced criticism from immigration hardliners who argue that the Biden administration’s decision to roll back certain immigration policies has contributed to an increase in the number of migrants seeking asylum at the U.S.-Mexico border. Some critics believe that allowing individuals with final orders of removal to remain in the country undermines the enforcement of immigration laws.

While PM Modis high-profile visit remained the talk of town both in India and in the US, it was also the little moments during the visit that made it extra special.

Indians and Americans were both mesmerized to see an impressive rendition of popular Shah Rukh Khan hit song Chaiyya Chaiyya performed by an Indian American group Penn Masala and soon everyone began asking who Penn Masala was. The American cappella group was formed by some students at the University of Pennsylvania. An enchanting coming together of Eastern and Western sensibilities, the group is known for their soulful singing of popular Bollywood songs. The group has released twelve full-length albums. While the group's songs are admired by music lovers around the world, their video, The Evolution of Bollywood Music has received over 1 million views on YouTube. Their soundtrack for 2015 movie Pitch Perfect 2 has also won the award for the Best

Soundtrack at the American Music Awards. Their most recent album, Midnight Oil, was released in 2022. The group has performed many times in India at various award shows. They have performed for high profile guests including UN General Secretary Ban Ki Moon.

The group blends popular songs to create their own unique version. While they have covered numerous Indian songs, they have also covered songs by U2 and Justin Timberlake.

Penn Masala is an evolving group, where the group's veteran members graduate and new members enter the group, selected through an audition. While most of the members are Indian, there are also members of non-Indian descent.

Chicago Math Teacher Nikhil Bhatia on his Run from Illinois 7th District

Chicago and how you plan to tackle them?

Chicago is struggling to integrate the thousands of migrants coming to our city from the southern border. There have been a lot of debates about if we should be helping them. But in my mind, there is no doubt that we should welcome them. They have risked their lives to come here. I believe they have a lot to contribute. Tell us about your growing up years here in the US?

Supreme Court Upholds Biden’s Authority To Restrict Immigration Arrests

Nikhil Bhatia, a Chicago-based teacher and education leader, has declared his candidacy for Congress in Illinois' 7th district. Bhatia aims to challenge longtime incumbent Democrat Danny Davis, who is seeking re-election for his 15th term. With a focus on community needs and reform, Bhatia is confident in his ability to bring change to the district. Talking to Hi India about his run and how his background as a teacher gives him a greater understanding of issues that need work, Nikhil touches upon his upbringing as an immigrant and his understanding of Chicago

As a teacher who is now running for Congress, what issues do you see as important and need immediate attention? My whole career, I have been a middle school teacher and a principal in urban education. Right now, it is apparent that our kids are not getting what they need to be successful.

From underfunded schools to gun violence to climate change, we are stacking the deck against our kids. It’s time for new leaders in Washington who are going to fight for our kids and communities and not just themselves. We can’t wait for change, we need to make it happen.

What would you say about political engagement and representation of the Indian American community here in Chicago?

I think Indians are focused on all levels of politics. Here in Chicago, we recently had our first Indian Alderman and our first Indian state senator. The community is just starting to integrate themselves fully. What would you say about the struggles that may be apparent for people of

My parents moved to the US after their marriage so I was born here. Mom and dad are my role models. They were not politically active but as doctors, they were always committed to helping others. I learned a lot from their example and I have spent my career trying to help kids. As an Indian American candidate here in Illinois, are there any unique challenges that you face?

We are underdogs in this race, going up against the Chicago political machine. So, we are going to have to win the oldfashioned way: knocking doors, meeting people one at a time, sharing our ideas. I believe when people learn what I stand for, we can shock the establishment. Tell us a bit more about your campaign and your vision for the city and your district?

My campaign is to bring change to our communities and fresh ideas to our party.

I am not a career politician or perennial candidate. I have had to balance teaching in our communities with raising my own kids. But that’s allowed me insight into what all our kids need – better schools, safer streets, a healthier planet, and a better democracy. It is up to the democratic party to communicate a vision of a forward-looking, diverse America that invests in the middle class and marginalized communities. I believe I can embody that.

Any message for young political aspirants, especially if they belong to a minority

To any young people trying to enter the political arena, I say this” you belong here. Don’t let race, gender, orientation etc. stop you. People will always try to discourage what is different and new. But America is diverse and it’s always evolving. We all have a place here and we need to fight for it.

WASHINGTON, DC- The U.S. Supreme Court has reinstated a Biden administration policy that limits the arrests of undocumented immigrants to those considered a threat to public safety or national security.

In the case of United States v. Texas, the court ruled that the states of Texas and Louisiana, which challenged the administration’s guidelines, did not have the legal standing to bring the lawsuit. With a vote of 8-1, the majority opinion prevailed, with Justice Samuel Alito being the sole dissenter. This decision represents a significant victory for the Biden administration, affirming the broad authority of the executive branch to shape the enforcement of federal immigration laws without interference from legal challenges. It reaffirms the administration’s power to direct ICE agents to prioritize the apprehension and deportation of individuals who pose the greatest risks to public safety, national security, and border security. These priorities were outlined in a 2021 memo issued by Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. The policy, which generally shields undocumented immigrants from arrest if they haven’t committed serious crimes, faced opposition from Texas and Louisiana. These states argued that the policy impeded ICE agents from fully enforcing immigration laws related to the detention of specific migrants. Initially, the lower courts blocked the policy, leading the case to be brought

before the Supreme Court.

In the majority opinion, Justice Brett Kavanaugh described the lawsuit brought by Texas and Louisiana as “extraordinarily unusual.” He argued that federal courts traditionally do not entertain requests to alter arrest policies of the executive branch in order to increase the number of arrests. Kavanaugh maintained that disputes regarding immigration arrests should be resolved through congressional appropriations, legislative changes, and federal elections, rather than through the judiciary. He cautioned that accepting the states’ arguments could open the door to state interference in federal law enforcement matters beyond immigration.

Embracing The Profound Significance Of Guru Purnima: Honoring The Guiding Lights In Our Lives

Guru Purnima, a significant festival in Hindu, Bhutanese, and Nepalese cultures, was celebrated with great enthusiasm. Held on the full moon day in the Hindu month of Aashaadha, the festival honors the role of gurus or spiritual teachers in dispelling ignorance and guiding their disciples towards enlightenment.

The festival is associated with various legends, including the birth of Ved Vyasa, a revered sage who organized the Vedas and authored important Hindu scriptures. In the yogic tradition, it is believed that Shiva became the first guru on this day and imparted the

knowledge of Yoga to the Saptarishis.

Buddhists also commemorate Guru Purnima as the day when Lord Buddha delivered his first sermon, while Jains celebrate it as Treenok Guha Purnima, marking Lord Mahavira making Gautam Swami his first disciple after attaining enlightenment.

Guru Purnima is not only observed in academic institutions as Teacher's Day but also in spiritual communities worldwide.

Students honor their teachers with offerings and seek blessings for success and prosperity. Spiritual seekers express gratitude to their gurus and engage in practices such as meditation and

silence, which facilitate spiritual growth and self-realization. The presence of a Satguru, a spiritual master, is believed to enhance knowledge and remove obstacles for disciples.

The union between the guru and disciple on Guru Purnima holds transformative power, helping individuals overcome fears and doubts on their spiritual journey.

Overall, Guru Purnima serves as a time for introspection, gratitude, and renewal, where individuals connect with both external and internal gurus to deepen their understanding and commitment to the spiritual path.

New Delhi, June 22 (IANSlife) So here is one of the most debatable topics amongst all fitness enthusiasts and nutritionists worldwide. When it comes to meeting your daily protein requirements, both eating protein-rich foods and drinking protein supplements can be effective. However, the choice between eating protein and drinking protein depends on individual goals, preferences, and dietary restrictions. Archi Garg, Nutritionist at Chicnutrix, shares her expert opinion to help you make the right choice.

Average daily requirement: Firstly, it is important to understand the average daily protein requirement for every individual. Protein in any form, either natural or artificial, is very essential to carry out normal body functions. The daily requirement for protein may vary according to age, weight, gender, and level of physical activity. Still, it ranges between 46-63 grams for adults and 65 grams for pregnant and lactating females.

Nutritional profile:

Natural protein sources and protein supplements (powders, juices and shakes) are both complete proteins; however, the rest of their nutritional profile is entirely different. Protein supplements are single isolated macronutrient. They provide 18-25 grams of protein, no fat, minimal carbohydrate and no vitamins and minerals, as they are all processed. However, nature does not provide protein or, in fact, any macro or micronutrient in isolation, which in itself is a blessing.

Natural proteins though unprocessed, yet contain a balanced blend of macro (proteins & fats) and micro (vitamins & minerals) nutrients. These nutrients work together to keep the

Protein Supplements

All protein supplements are artificial sources, and they provide all essential amino acids in the required quantity. In liquid forms, such as protein juices, protein is easy to absorb and digest. Also, these protein supplements are more convenient and instant to consume and thus play the role of a goto meal. However, most of the protein supplements contain artificial colours and preservatives, which are harmful to the body. A pressure point P-6 (Nei guan) is found on your wrist just under the edge of your index finger between the two central tendons. Massage both sides one at a time and then apply pressure for two minutes to reduce nausea from any cause, even pregnancy. Repeat on the other side.

Motion sickness bands called sea bands can be used on both wrists over the Nei guan point. Sea bands have a button. Position the band tightly with the button facing downward over the Nei guan point. They should be placed half an hour before travelling and then left on till the journey is over, even if it lasts a day or two. One band must be worn on each wrist to be effective. Both the bands and the massage are effective in pregnancy too.

The advantage of acupressure and motion sickness bands is that no medication is required. There are no side effects. They can be safely used even in children. Now that you know what to do to tackle motion sickness, here’s wishing you and your family happy travels.

Modi State Dinner: Ambani & Pichai Attend

New Delhi: Technology cooperation featured prominently in the discussion between India and the US, Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra today said, while highlighting the most substantive outcomes of the ongoing state visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Mr Kwatra said one theme which has run through the visit is the “exceptional warmth and hospitality” US President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden extended to PM Modi.

“Very clearly, technology, in particular advanced technology, across all domains ranging from defence to space and energy is one of the most important substantive outcomes,” he told reporters

in a media briefing. India and US launched publicprivate Joint Task Forces, one on the development and deployment of Open Radio Access Networks (RAN) -- a new approach to building the mobile networks that are needed to connect smartphones and devices to the internet and other users -- and one on advanced telecoms research and development.

“All I want to say to these Opposition leaders is that your unity is nearly impossible and even if it gets real, please come in front of the people as in 2024, Modi’s return with 300 plus seats is confirmed,” he said.

Diabetes to Affect 1.3 Billion by 2050: Lancet

Big names in the tech world and billionaire industrialists such as Mukesh Ambani, Google CEO Sunder Pichai and Apple CEO Tim Cook were among those invited to the State Dinner hosted in the honour of Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the White House on Thursday. The menu, comprising mostly vegetarian dishes, taking note of the dietary restrictions of the visiting prime minister, included marinated millets, stuffed mushrooms, grilled corn kernel salad and cardamom-infused strawberry shortcake.

More than 400 guests were invited for the dinner hosted by US President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden at a specially decorated pavilion on the South Lawn of the White House.

In his address at the State Dinner, Prime Minister Modi applauded the role of Indian Americans in the all-round development of the nation they live in and playing a significant role in strengthening the India-US relationship. The guests here “symbolise so much about the US-India relationship - our energy, our dynamism, and our potential”, he said. “You have gathered a group of exceptionally talented and remarkable people tonight, I must commend you for that,” he said thanking President Biden and the first lady for hosting the dinner and raised a toast for his “wonderful” hosts.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday dubbed as a “photo session” the meeting of Opposition leaders in Patna, and said their unity is nearly impossible and they will face drubbing in the next Lok Sabha polls.

Referring to the opposition meet underway in Bihar’s capital, Shah said, “A photo session is happening in Patna. All the opposition leaders have come

Top leaders of Opposition parties are holding deliberations to chalk out a roadmap for the formation of an antiBJP front for the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. The meeting is being hosted by Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and his deputy Tejashwi Yadav.

Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s US visit, Shah said, “A lot of agreements are taking place especially in the field of space, defence and semiconductors. The world’s biggest companies are now interested in investing in India under the leadership of the prime minister”.

Obama tells it as it is on Muslim rights, urges Biden to talk to Modi about freedom concerns

HiIndia Newsdesk

Former US President Barack Obama on Thursday joined the growing list of American politicians and civil society members clamouring to get President Joe Biden to raise concerns about the erosion of religious, media and political freedoms in India when he meets Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Obama’s comments came in an interview with CNN an hour before the Prime Minister was to arrive at the White House for the ceremonial welcome. Asked how Biden should engage with leaders like Modi, Obama said: “If the President meets with Prime Minister

Modi, then the protection of the Muslim minority in a majority Hindu India, that’s something worth mentioning.”

Stating that he had dealt with the Chinese President and Modi to get the Paris

Accords done, Obama added: “If I had a conversation with Prime Minister Modi —whom I know well — part of my argument would be that if you do not protect the rights of ethnic minorities in India, then there is a strong possibility (that) India, at some point, starts pulling apart and we have seen what happens when you start getting those kinds of large internal conflicts.

“That would be contrary to the interests not just of Muslim India but also Hindu India. I think it’s important to be able to talk about these things honestly.”

Biden was Vice-President through the Obama years in the White House.

Aries

Ganesha says that the week will start with the removal of any major hindrance related to life. Those who were suffering from some disease will get health benefits. Overall, the people of Aries will get freedom from diseases and bereavement this week. During this time you will work with a new energy and confidence in your field or business.

Taurus

Ganesha says that the people of Taurus should avoid getting involved in unnecessary disputes this week. At the beginning of the week, your opponents may be active in the workplace and may try to distract you from your goal. In such a situation, instead of getting entangled in small things, it would be better to focus on your goal.

Gemini

The curves of ASICS's 'Gel-Kayano 14' sneakers are molded to fit the contours of your feet and provide maximum comfort. Referencing the original 2000s design, they're made from panels of suede and breathable mesh with the brand's 'GEL' technology in the soles. The Y2K aesthetic has made them an instant TikTok hit.

Ganesha says thatthis week has brought happiness, prosperity, and success to the people of Gemini. At the beginning of the week, people who are preparing for the exam competition can get to hear some good news. If you were waiting for a transfer or promotion at your desired place for a long time, then your wish will be fulfilled this week.

Cancer

week, some problems related to the workplace can be a major cause of your concern. During this time you will get less support from both your seniors and juniors and extra hard work and effort will be required to fulfill your target.

Sagittarius

Ganesha says that the week for Sagittarius people will start with long or short-distance travel. During this time you can go for tourism with your family. The journey will prove to be pleasant and entertaining.

Capricorn

When it comes to styling, Hailey Bieber knows what she likes—the model rotates the same trusted outfit formulas again and again. When you find the proportions and shapes that you feel confident in, it pays to stick to them and just make small tweaks and upgrades here and there. The outfits she wears the most? Baggy jeans with an oversized vintage leather jacket, jorts and a T-shirt, and thigh-grazing hemlines after dark. One of her go-to looks in summer is a strappy, ’90s-style dress worn with trainers – an outfit she modeled yesterday in West Hollywood for an outing with her friend Justine Skye. Hailey wore a white midi

with spaghetti straps and a slight cowl neckline. It’s a smart dress that could even work as a bridal evening look, but Hailey made it daytime appropriate with her white socks and sporty white and aqua trainers. Bieber then stuck to her signature accessories: a white Bottega Veneta mini Sardine bag and Saint Laurent sunglasses, and low-key hair and makeup.

Navigating how to dress in summer can be difficult, but Bieber shows that even your fanciest dresses can work for a coffee catch up, as long as you offset the formality with trainers and relatively undone hair and makeup. Forget saving things for best, why not wear your most beautiful dress this weekend?

Ganesha says that the people of the Cancer zodiac will have to control their minds, speech, and behavior a lot this week, otherwise, you may have to face all kinds of problems unnecessarily. At the beginning of the week, there can be a debate with colleagues regarding something in the workplace.

Leo

Ganesha says that this week has brought success and good fortune for the people of the Leo zodiac. At the beginning of the week, the journeys made in connection with career and business will bring the desired success. During this, you will get a lot of support from people both at home and outside. Jobs will become an additional source of income for the people.

Virgo

Ganesha says that this week will prove to be mixed for the people of Virgo. At the beginning of the

Ganesha says that the people of Capricorn will need to focus on their goal this week, not paying attention to the things here and there. At the beginning of the week, any dispute related to land-building will be a major cause of your concern.

Aquarius

Ganesha says that this week is going to be auspicious for the people of Aquarius in terms of career and business. At the beginning of the week, the journey done in connection with the business will prove to be pleasant and profitable.

Pisces

Ganesha says that this week is auspicious and successful for the people of Pisces. At the beginning of the week, all the opportunities related to life will be seen knocking on the doors. People wandering in search of employment will get better opportunities. Will get the benefit of schemes related to power and government.

ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 Qualifier

New Delhi: (IANS) India captain Rohit Sharma believes the upcoming ICC World Cup will be "very competitive" as the game has "become faster" and teams embracing a more attacking approach like never before.

India will be aiming for their third title and the second at home when they begin their campaign in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup against Australia in Chennai on October 8.

The hosts will play all their nine league matches at different venues including the new Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow. "It’s going to be a great experience playing in the World Cup at home. India won here 12 years ago, and I know fans nationwide can't wait for us to take the field this time. This World Cup is going to be very competitive as the game has become faster and teams are playing more positively than ever before," Rohit was quoted as saying in an ICC release.

The ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023 qualifier is currently underway in Zimbabwe, with ten teams competing for the final two spots in the main event to be held in India later this year. In Group A, Zimbabwe emerged victorious against West Indies, securing their place in the Super Six stage alongside Oman, who despite their loss, also qualified. In Group B, Sri Lanka's convincing win over Ireland dashed the latter's hopes of advancing. Scotland, with their third consecutive victory, also secured their spot in the Super Six. The West Indies face a challenging task ahead, needing to win all their Super Six matches and rely on other teams' results to have a chance at qualifying.

The West Indies' qualification hopes now rest on their performances in the Super Six stage. If they defeat the Netherlands, they will carry two points forward, but a loss will effectively eliminate them from contention. They must win all their Super Six games while hoping that Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe do not win more than one match. The Net Run Rate (NRR) will play a significant role in determining the final two qualifying teams. The West Indies' match against Sri Lanka will be crucial for their chances, and they need to bring their best performance under their new coach, Daren Sammy.

With the World Cup qualifiers entering the Super Six stage, the battle for the remaining two spots intensifies. The West Indies' fate hangs in the balance as they strive to qualify for the main event in India. The team must not only defeat the Netherlands but also secure wins against tough opponents like Sri Lanka, Oman, and Scotland. The Net Run Rate will be a crucial factor, and the West Indies need to showcase their best cricket to have a shot at making it to the World Cup. Under the guidance of their coach Daren Sammy, the team faces a challenging task ahead and must bring their A-game to the field.

Indian Standard Time (IST) while all other matches, including the knockouts, will be day-night fixtures starting at 1400 IST.

The top four teams will qualify for the semifinals, to be played in Mumbai on November 15 and in Kolkata on November 16. The semi-finals and the final will have reserve days.

ICC Chief Executive, Geoff Allardice said: “We are delighted to release the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 schedule which is always a huge occasion ahead of any global event.

“Hundreds of millions of fans around the world will be part of what we hope will be the greatest ever Men’s Cricket World Cup and we know in India the teams will enjoy a unique electric atmosphere concluding with the winners lifting the trophy in the biggest cricket stadium in the world in Ahmedabad.”

BCCI Secretary Jay Shah said: “It’s a matter of great honour and pride to be hosting the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in different cities across India, showcasing the rich diversity of our country."

“The fervour and passion for cricket in India is unique. I am sure fans both here and abroad would be looking forward to the tournament’s return to India for the first time since 2011, when our team became the first to lift the trophy on home soil.

“I wish all the teams the very best in their preparations and look forward to hosting what promises to be another exciting tournament.”

India will look to win World Cup for Kohli, says Virender Sehwag

New Delhi: (IANS) Former Indian opener Virender Sehwag expressed that the entire nation eagerly anticipates witnessing Virat Kohli lifting the World Cup trophy, recalling how he and his teammates, under MS Dhoni, gave it their all for Sachin Tendulkar in 2011.

Regarded as one of the premier contributors to Indian cricket, Kohli has accumulated an impressive tally of 12,898 runs in 274 ODIs, boasting an average of 57.32.

Notably, Kohli was part of the 2011 World Cup squad led by MS Dhoni. India went to the 2019 World Cup under Kohli's captaincy but they were knocked out in the semifinal.

Speaking to Star Sports, Sehwag highlighted that t Kohli always gives his 100 percent and predicted that the playing surfaces in the tournament are likely to favor his ability to accumulate runs.
