Canada stops advertising with Facebook and Instagram in news row
Canada's federal government has said it will pull all its advertising from Facebook and Instagram. It follows parent company Meta's move to restrict news content for Canadians after parliament passed a law that will force tech firms to pay media for news.
Canadian officials said on Wednesday that they stand by the law and will not be "intimidated" by Meta.
They said they have been in contact with other countries who plan to pass similar laws.
All the victims suffered non-life threatening injuries, Parsons said. None have been identified.
It was not immediately clear if there was more than one shooter in the vehicle and no arrests have been made.

The account, which reportedly garnered some 100 followers, appears to have been taken down.

cocaine found at White House
at Camp David in Maryland at the time.
A US federal judge has limited the Biden administration's communications with social media companies which are aimed at moderating their content.
In a 155-page ruling on Tuesday, judge Terry Doughty barred White House officials and some government agencies from contacting firms over "content containing protected free speech".
The US Secret Service is investigating after cocaine was found at the White House on Sunday night.
The discovery in the West Wing, which contains the Oval Office and other working areas for presidential aides and staff, led to a brief evacuation.
Secret Service agents found the suspicious powder during a routine inspection in an area that is accessible to tour groups.

A senior law enforcement official told the BBC's US partner CBS News the substance was found in a storage facility routinely used by White House staff and guests to store mobile phones. The White House complex was closed as a precaution at around 20:45 local time (00:45 GMT) on Sunday after it was discovered. A preliminary test later confirmed the substance was cocaine. The Secret Service will lead a full review of how it got into the White House, press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said on Wednesday. A senior law enforcement official told CBS, the BBC's US partner, that cameras and entrance logs would be examined to determine who had access to the area where the drug was found.
It is a victory for Republicans who have accused officials of censorship. Democrats said the platforms have failed to address misinformation. The case was one of the most closelywatched First Amendment battles in the US courts, sparking a debate over the government's role in moderating content which it deemed to be false or harmful. The White House said the US Department of Justice was reviewing the ruling and deciding on its next steps. "Our consistent view remains that social media platforms have a critical responsibility to take account of the effects their platforms are having on the American people," the White House said in a statement. It added that platforms should "make independent choices about the information they present".
The ruling comes after a lawsuit by the Republican attorneys general of Missouri and Louisiana alleged that US officials had pressured social media platforms to address posts on topics including Covid-19 policies and election security.

Putin says sanctions making Russia stronger
Russia will continue to oppose Western sanctions, President Vladimir Putin has said, following Moscow's invasion of Ukraine.
His address to a virtual Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit was his first to an international meeting since last month's mutiny in Russia. Mr Putin backed trade accords between SCO nations in local currencies - seen as an attempt to blunt sanctions.
The 2023 SCO summit is taking place virtually, under India's leadership.
China accuses UK of harbouring Hong Kong fugitives
China says the UK is sheltering fugitives after Hong Kong put bounties on the heads of eight prodemocracy activists who fled the territory. The statement from its London embassy came after the UK said it would not tolerate attempts by China to silence individuals in the UK or overseas. The eight left the former British territory after Beijing imposed a sweeping national security law in 2020.
Hong Kong's Chief Executive John Lee said they would be "pursued for life".

Ruins found of Munich synagogue destroyed by Hitler
A controversial plan by Japan to release treated waste water from the Fukushima nuclear plant has sparked anxiety and anger at home and abroad.
Since the 2011 tsunami which severely damaged the plant, more than a million tonnes of treated waste water has accumulated there. Japan now wants to start discharging it into the Pacific Ocean. The UN nuclear watchdog the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), has published a report endorsing Japan's plan. But since it was announced two years ago, the plan has been deeply controversial in Japan with local communities expressing concerns about contamination. Fishing and seafood industry groups in Japan and the wider region have also voiced concerns about their livelihoods, as they fear consumers will avoid buying seafood.
Jenin: Palestinians fear escalation after destructive West Bank assault
Eighty-five years after Adolf Hitler ordered the destruction of Munich's main synagogue, construction workers have found rubble from the building in a nearby river. They uncovered columns from the synagogue and a stone tablet showing some of the Ten Commandments. The Jewish community and local figures are delighted with the discovery. "We never thought we would find anything from it," said Bernhard Purin, head of Munich's Jewish museum.
India family's Canadian dream shattered as husband dies in accident
The atmosphere in Jenin refugee camp feels like one I have witnessed elsewhere - in Gaza, after wars with Israel. But this is the occupied West Bank; where the dynamics are very different. Now it seems like a fast descent into something far more dangerous is already happening. The destruction in the camp following the Israeli army's biggest assault there in 20 years is massive.
As hundreds of troops entered the camp
on Monday morning, the army fired missiles from drones - air strikes have not been used in the West Bank for two decades - and tore up roads to clear them of what it said were militants' roadside bombs.
Fierce gun battles broke out between the troops and Palestinian militants and continued until Israeli troops withdrew on Tuesday night. Now for the first time in safety since Sunday, thousands of residents pour into the streets to see the destruction themselves.

India's HDFC Bank at record high post HDFCmerger, among world's top 10 banks by value
HiIndia NewsdeskMUMBAI (Reuters) - Shares of India's HDFC Bank hit an all-time high on Monday after it completed its merger with parent Housing Development Finance Corp (HDFC), entering the coveted list of the world's top 10 banks by market capitalisation.
HDFC Bank's shares jumped 3.3% to a record high of 1,757.50 rupees, while HDFC's shares rose 3.7% to 2,927.40 rupees, their highest since April 2022, when the merger was first announced. The $40-billion merger-the biggest in India's corporate history-closed on June 30 to create a financial behemoth that can now underwrite larger ticket loans, including those for infrastructure. Since the deal was announced, the private lender's shares have risen about 14.5%, while the housing finance company's stock has gained over 17%, both outperforming the roughly 9% rise in the benchmark Nifty 50 index in that period.
That gives the combined entity a market capitalisation of around $157 billion, Reuters calculations showed, more than top global lenders such as Morgan Stanley and HSBC Holdings.
Still, Morgan Stanley believes HDFC Bank's valuation is attractive.
"The merger is synergistic. HDFC Bank gets access to secured and long-tenor retail mortgage products as well as a large
customer base," the brokerage said in a note dated July 2.
It expects the merged entity's loan growth to accelerate to 17%-18% in four quarters, from 15%-16% currently, particularly as mortgage loan growth accelerates. The brokerage resumed coverage of HDFC Bank with an 'overweight' rating and a target price of 2,110 rupees per share, implying a 26% upside to its last close. Sashidhar Jagdishan, managing director and CEO of HDFC Bank, has an equally bullish target. "The pace at which we aim to grow, we could be creating a new HDFC Bank every 4 years," Jagdishan told employees over the weekend.
The combined entity, with a large and growing distribution and customer franchise, more than adequate capital, healthy asset quality and profitability, will be "best positioned" to capture growth, he said.
Both companies have set July 13 as the "record date" to swap HDFC's shares with HDFC Bank's stock for its shareholders

US economy stronger than reported at start of 2023
Electric carmaker Tesla says it delivered a record number of vehicles in the three months to the end of June, after cutting prices to boost sales. It has lowered prices in markets including the US, UK and China to compete with rival manufacturers. This weekend, major Chinese car makers also reported a surge in sales in June. Earlier this year, Tesla boss Elon Musk said he believed pursuing higher sales, with lower profits, was the "right choice" for the company.
US economic growth was stronger than previously reported at the start of the year - news that could help bolster the case for higher interest rates in the world's largest economy.
The Commerce Department said the latest data showed the US economy grew at an annual rate of 2% in the first three months of the year.
Its first estimate put growth at 1.1% in the January to March period.
The boost reflected stronger consumer spending than previously understood.
The US central bank has been trying to cool the economy, aiming to ease the pressures pushing up prices. It has raised its key interest rate by five percentage points since March 2022, to more than 5%, and signalled that more hikes are in the offing. The moves had raised concerns that they might lead to a painful slowdown, as higher rates weigh on activity, such as spending and business expansions. Many companies had reported concerns about the outlook earlier this year, but hiring has remained strong and other data has painted a brighter picture.
As well as consumer spending, the Commerce Department on Thursday said exports were also greater than previously reported.
"Narrative on growth shifts, again. Signs of slowing scant," Diane Swonk, chief economist at KPMG in the US, tweeted in response to the report.
New Zealand bans plastic bags for fresh produce
New Zealand has become the world's first country to expand its ban on plastic bags in supermarkets to thin bags, which are typically used to hold fruits or vegetables.
The move, which took effect on Saturday, is part of a wider government campaign against singleuse plastics.
Most shoppers already bring their own bags to stores after take-home plastic bags were banned in 2019. In recent years, many countries have imposed a fee or ban on plastic bags. "New Zealand produces too much waste, too much plastic waste," Associate Environment Minister Rachel Brooking said.

Manipur: Mob sets fire to Indian Reserve Battalion personnel’s house
An irate mob torched the house of an Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB) personnel in Manipur’s Thoubal district, police said on Wednesday.
The incident took place at Samaram on Tuesday night after a 27-year-old man, identified as Ronaldo, was killed in a clash when a 700-800-strong mob tried to storm the camp of the 3rd IRB at Wangbal, 4 km away, to loot firearms. The forces tried to bring the situation under control and used teargas shells and rubber bullets at first. But as the armed mob opened fire, the forces shot back, officials said.
NCP chief Sharad Pawar’s supporters thronged his residence in south Mumbai on Wednesday, hours ahead of the show of strength meetings convened by him and his nephew Ajit Pawar who has parted ways to become Maharashtra deputy chief minister. The Sharad Pawar and Ajit Pawar factions of the Nationalist Congress Party are holding their meetings in Yashwantrao Chavan Centre in south Mumbai and in Bhujbal Knowledge City in suburban Bandra, respectively, on Wednesday. Outside Silver Oak, the senior Pawar’s residence in south Mumbai, a party worker was seen carrying a banner which read: '83-year-old warrior waging a fight alone'.

‘Mehngai Man’ tormenting India, burning a hole in poor man’s pocket: Congress
Superman and Spiderman are passé.
New Delhi: The Supreme Court was told yesterday that the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has been given “drastic powers” in investigating money laundering cases and these powers need to be reined in. A bench of Justices AS Bopanna and MM Sundresh was hearing a batch of pleas relating to Gurugram-based realty group M3M under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). Senior advocate Harish Salve, appearing on behalf of directors of realty group M3M, said, “These are drastic powers given to the ED. If the court does not rein them in, no one is safe in this country. See how the arrest was done. They were cooperating. The arrest was in violation of my rights... These powers need to be reined in.” Mr Salve and senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi were representing M3M directors, Basant Bansal and Pankaj Bansal, who were arrested in a money laundering probe related to a bribery case against a former judge.
The Supreme Court on Wednesday extended interim protection from arrest to activist Teesta Setalvad in a case linked to the 2002 post-Godhra riots. The next hearing will be on July 19.
A bench of Justices B R Gavai, A S Bopanna and Dipankar Datta issued notice to the Gujarat government on the appeal filed by Setalvad against the Gujarat high court order.
“Mehngai Man” is tormenting India now, the Congress said on Tuesday.
“The Mehngai Man has set the poor man’s thali on fire — prices of wheat flour, edible oil, pulses, vegetables and fruits are skyrocketing. While the common people are in acute distress, the emperor is in ecstasy after pushing the prices of essential commodities — from tomato to petrol — beyond reach,” Congress spokesperson
Supriya Shrinate said. “The king who is called Mehngai Man is Narendra Modi,” she said. Castigating the sycophants of the “Mehngai Man” for not telling him the truth about savagely rising prices and peaking unemployment, Shrinate said: “While the budgets of middle-class households have derailed, the poor cannot afford the basic food for sustenance. Tomato, which was selling for Rs 10-15 a kg, has shot up to Rs 150; even green chillies and lemons have gone beyond the common man’s reach.” She added: “Pulses selling at Rs 75 a kg a few years ago are now available at Rs 170. Rice, spices, milk, tea, biscuits and oil have become costlier. There is deceit as well — packets of some items are available at the same rate but the amount has been significantly decreased. The cooking gas cylinder costing Rs 1,170 has broken the poor’s backbone. The Congress governments are helping them by making it available for Rs 500.”
India’s Space Programme Revolutionizes Global Space Exploration: The NewYork Times
The article titled ‘The Surprising Striver in the World’s Space Business’ notes that India has become home to at least 140 registered spacetech start-ups
“When it launched its first rocket in 1963, India was a poor country pursuing the world’s most cutting-edge technology. That projectile, its nose cone wheeled to the launchpad by a bicycle, put a small payload 124 miles above the Earth. India was barely pretending to keep up with the US and the Soviet Union. In today’s space race, India has found much surer footing,” the leading US newspaper said.
Lauding India’s ambitious space programme, The New York Times has said the country, currently witnessing an “explosive” growth in space-tech start-ups, is set to “transform the planet’s connection to the final frontier” and can emerge as a “counterweight” to China.
The article titled ‘The Surprising Striver in the World’s Space Business’ notes that India has become home to at least 140 registered space-tech start-ups, “comprising a local research field that stands to transform the planet’s connection to the final frontier.” “The start-ups’ growth has been explosive, leaping from five when the pandemic started. And they see a big market to serve,” the paper said.
Eight new medical colleges sanctioned in Telangana
Kerala snake boat season off to bad start as women's boat overturns
Hyderabad: (IANS) The Telangana government on Wednesday issued orders for setting up eight new government medical colleges in the state. Each of these colleges and government general hospitals will have an intake capacity of 100 MBBS seats and will come up at Maheshwaram in Rangareddy district, Yadadri in Yadadri Bhongir district, Medak in Medak district, Narsampet in Warangal district, Mulugu in Mulugu district, Narayanpet in Narayanpet district, Gadwal in Jogulamba Gadwal district, and Qutbullapur in Medchal Malkajgiri district. Thiruvananthapuram: (IANS) The Kerala snake boat season opener -- the famed Champakulam Moolam ‘vallam kali’ (boat race) -- got off to an ominous start when an ‘all women' boat capsized. Fortunately, all the 17 women on the boat were rescued.
Since the oarswomen were all good swimmers and with help instantly arriving, all were quickly taken out of the water. They were taken to a nearby hospital and are well. This race is traditionally known as the first snake boat race which heralds a fresh new season of a series of boat races in and around the central districts of the state.
This race takes place on the Pamba river and the incident took place late Monday afternoon when two races were held almost simultaneously. During the race competitions are held

“One of the two Thekenodi boats overturned as the losers snake boat race began before the exhibition event of the two ‘Thekenodi’ had finished and due to the sudden surge in the water by the giant snake boats ( there are more than 100 oarsmen), the ripples created led to the overturning of one Thekenodi boat. This was an error by the organizers,” said locals.
With the district authorities and a state minister present to witness the event, as soon as the boat overturned an announcement was made to stop all the races.
Kerala Police Files Case Against Actor Vijayakumar for Trespassing
Hyderabad:(IANS) In continuing friction with the Telangana government, Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan on Monday made a surprise visit to Osmania General Hospital.
During her visit to the governmentrun hospital, she visited all the hospital wards and interacted with the patients and the doctors and para-medical staff.
The Governor visited the century-old hospital a few days after she voiced concern over its condition. This had attracted criticism from Health Minister T. Harish Rao who alleged that she was speaking "like a BJP spokesperson". Soundararajan voiced her concern regarding the quality of facilities and the issue of limited space. She mentioned that she has raised these concerns with the Chief Minister and the Health Department on multiple occasions. She further shared that her first meeting upon assuming office as the Governor was with a delegation from the Osmania General Hospital.
Soundararajan urged the state government to make alternative arrangements before any further legal hurdles arise. Emphasising that the well-being of poor patients should be the government's highest priority, she acknowledged the exemplary work being done by the doctors despite the existing limitations.
She specifically mentioned the unhygienic conditions of the hospital toilets and washrooms, the roof ceiling in the old building, and the inadequate ventilation.
During her visit, the Governor observed the post-operative ward and general ward, both of which she described as being in not good state.
She clarified that her intention was not to engage in a blame game, but rather to ensure that the poor and needy patients receive the best possible treatment facilities as it is the only resort to them to get treatment.
As a resident of the state, she urged the government to improve hospital infrastructure and treatment facilities.
Thiruvananthapuram: (IANS) The Kerala Police have registered a case against actor Vijayakumar following a complaint by his actress daughter Arthana Binu that he trespassed into the house where she lives with her mother, sister and grandmother in the state capital. The actress's mother and Vijayakumar divorced long back. This trespassing case came to light after the actress apparently failed to get any help from the local police when she informed them. Things started to change when she posted the video of her father engaged in trespassing. The video went viral and it was after that the police started to act . In her post on social media she wrote, “I am putting up this post as even though we called the police station for help at around 9:45 a.m. no one has taken any action till now. College Professor In US Fired For Asking 11 Female Students To "Remove Shirts In Class"
HiIndia
NewsdeskA college professor in the United States has been fired for allegedly asking female students to remove their shirts, according to Fox5 DC. The action was taken after an investigation by the Office for Civil Rights within the Department of Education in the incident. The three-month-long investigation revealed that the professor had created a hostile environment by instructing approximately 11 female students to remove their shirts down to their sports bras as part of a class demonstration. He also made inappropriate comments about their breasts, claiming it was related to a medical assessment, despite no requirement for clothing removal or such commentary, the outlet further said. According to Fox5 DC, when some of the women wore lab jackets for modesty, the professor insisted they remove them. The incident occurred at the Takoma/Silver Spring campus and was initially reported in October 2019. After the investigation,
the male faculty member - whose name has not been released - was immediately placed on administrative leave and later fired.
A spokesperson for Montgomery College expressed gratitude for the thorough investigation carried out by OCR and expressed full support to the resolutions outlined in the final report, which was
made public recently.
During the investigation, it was discovered that one of the female students involved had failed the course, believing it was due to the harassment, Fox5 DC said in its report. The college assisted her in reenrolling and covered the expenses for her to retake the class. Additionally, the college
Will BJP face wrath of Kol tribe in pollbound MP after inhuman pee-gate?
The inhuman act of a youth named Pravesh Shukla, who was caught on camera peeing on the face of a tribal labourer in Madhya Pradesh's Sidhi district, has left the Shivraj Singh Chouhan-led BJP government with no choice but to get into damage control mode, more so because the Assembly elections are just five months away. Parvesh happens to be the representative of BJP MLA Kedarnath Shukla.
Pravesh's shameful act has not only given the opposition Congress an opportunity to corner the BJP over 'atrocities' against people belonging to SC/ST communities, but also a chance to present itself as the 'sympathiser' of the downtrodden communities in the poll-bound state.
Notably, the victim - Dasmat Rawat - belongs to the Kol tribe, which comes under the Scheduled Tribe (ST) category, and is the largest tribal group in the Vindhya region comprising seven districts -- Satna, Sidhi, Singrauli, Sidhi, Umaria, Shahdol and Anuppur.
The region consists of 30 Assembly seats, out of which 24 were won by the BJP in 2018. While the ruling party is putting in all possible efforts to secure the maximum number of seats in the Vindhya region, Pravesh's shameful act is bound to create anti-BJP sentiments among the Kol community. The tribal communities, including Bhil, Bhilala, Gond, Korku, Baiga, Saharia, Kol and Bharia, constitute over 21 per cent of the voters in Madhya Pradesh, which has 230 Assembly constituencies. Out of these, 84 are tribal-dominated constituencies, with 47 seats reserved for ST candidates.
In 2013 elections, the BJP had won 60 out of these 84 seats (and 165 out of the 230 seats), but the numbers had

slumped to 34 in 2018. The Congress, which had won 24 of the 84 seats in 2013 (and just 58 in total), improved its tally to 47 in 2018, while its rebels emerged victorious on three seats. The Congress has grabbed the opportunity now as it has planned to take the peeing issue to the community members during campaigning.
Congress MLAs belonging to SC/ST communities are apparently charged up, trying to stoke anti-BJP sentiments among the Kol community members.
The BJP, as part of its damage control measures, has bulldozed the “illegal encroachments" of Pravesh, who has been booked under the stringent National Security Act (NSA) after the
video of the act went viral on social media on Tuesday.
Notably, a couple of months back, Shivraj Singh Chouhan had perfomed a bhumi-pujan for the conservation and restoration work of the Kolgarhi Fort of tribal Kol rulers in Rewa district.
In fact, in the last couple of years, the Chouhan-led state government has implemented a host of tribal-centric initiatives, particularly named after tribal heroes, including Birsa Munda and Tantya Bheel. These initiatives not only include restoring places associated with tribal heroes, but also other measures like self-employment schemes etc.
offered tuition reimbursement or covered the costs for at least three other students in the same class to retake the course. Although the professor was ultimately fired, some unanswered questions remain: The college has not disclosed whether the matter was referred to the police, why the professor's name has not been revealed, or which specific class was involved.
Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich was quoted as saying by the outlet: "I wouldn't expect anybody to release anyone's name until there's been an investigation. If it's not a police matter, if it's like discipline, a personnel matter, personnel things don't get discussed." While the report commended Montgomery College for promptly conducting an investigation, it expressed concern that not all individuals involved were informed of the findings. Council member Will Jawando, who chairs the Education Committee, expressed surprise at learning about the incident four years after it occurred.

Konkona Sensharma on the Power of Subtlety in Film
It’s a pity Konkona Sensharma doesn’t direct more often, because when she does, we are treated to rich storytelling. In her second Hindi directorial venture, 'Lust Stories 2', the actor-filmmaker goes beyond the primary emotion of lust and addresses voyeurism, loneliness and class divide. “It’s nice to talk about things that aren’t regularly seen or spoken about,” she smiles.
The Mirror, her segment in the Netflix anthology, revolves around Tillotama Shome’s character, who discovers that her help—essayed by Amruta Subhash— regularly has sex in her apartment. Barring a few lovemaking scenes, the director makes clever use of a mirror, camera movements and objects in the room to imply the proceedings. “We needed to show some amount of sexual activity to put across some ideas. We planned [those scenes] in great detail—which angle the [camera will be in], and who is comfortable with what. [But] I don’t think it’s always powerful to show something upfront. Sometimes alluding to it [is more effective], like in the case of violence. Ideas can be powerful without their physical depiction,” states Sensharma.
I’d rather be a log of wood in a good director’s film Vijay Varma
Feeling
with
Vijay Varma is on a hot streak. In only a year, the actor shone bright in Darlings (2022), Dahaad and now Lust Stories 2. “I feel on top of the world,” he smiles, when we sit down to chat with him. The actor made waves this summer with his intense depiction of a serial killer in the widely acclaimed Dahaad, following it up with the Netflix anthology that dropped this weekend. Tell him he has come a long way since his breakout turn in Zoya Akhtar’s Gully Boy (2019), and he reflects, “There is so much content coming out every week, across
languages. When everyone stops to look at my show, it’s amazing. I finally feel seen. It feels like I’m moving in the right direction. While these may seem like dangerous stories, I want to continue doing them.” Unheard stories excite him. Varma’s second criterion is directors. He admits his good work is the result of finding like-minded filmmakers. “I’d rather be a log of wood in a good director’s film than be the lead in a movie made by a filmmaker I don’t admire. I am glad Sujoy Ghosh thought of me for The Devotion of Suspect X and Lust Stories 2. He is teaching me so much, including Bangla,” he laughs. While their segment in Lust Stories 2 received mixed reviews, the actor stands by the storytelling. “A short film is challenging because a lot of it is on paper, but there’s time constraint. It’s an actor’s job to internalise the character.”

Celebrating Ethnicity and Tradition: An Unwavering Passion for Promoting Gujarati Culture in America
My enduring passion has been to introduce and celebrate ethnic cultures and traditional mediums. Years ago, we envisioned a platform for Indian Americans to reconnect with their traditions left behind in their homeland. This dream was realized through Sandesh, a Gujarati newspaper that not only disseminated news, but also served as a window into a bygone era for a generation of Indian Americans. For a quarter of a century, Sandesh stirred nostalgia and offered the younger generation a glimpse into their roots, traditional festivals, and folk tales, existing now as a digital echo of the past.
In 2008, we expanded our initiative by launching Hi India, a weekly newspaper that swiftly became an essential resource for South Asia news and updates. Over 16 years, Hi India has maintained its journalistic integrity, standing as a beacon of truth, equity, and sovereignty. Beyond news, it has celebrated community achievements, brought in celebrity gossip, covered scientific advancements, and offered a platform for local leaders and activists.
Under the Hi India Entertainment banner, we’ve facilitated many of the most sought-after Indian celebrity shows and concerts in America. From our annual event featuring dandiya queen Falguni Pathak to Atul Purohit’s mesmerizing Garba concerts, our events have brought joy to the Indian American community in the US and Canada. With each passing year, we have brought to stage critically acclaimed Gujarati plays and music concerts featuring revered artists from ethnic entertainment.
Preserving and promoting Gujarati culture and language has been the driving force of my career. I’ve been instrumental in orchestrating a plethora of Gujarati plays, music concerts, and annual Navratri Garba in the US. I firmly believe that culture and language are best portrayed through creative arts, making them relatable rather than preachy.
This year, we’re taking our passion to another level with the International Gujarati Film Festival (IGFF). Gujarati cinema, traditionally known for its semi-urban/rural themes and historical narratives, is undergoing a transformative phase. The last five years have seen an evolution towards more urban-centric themes, modern sensibilities, and the advent of young talent in all aspects of filmmaking. The IGFF is our attempt to highlight this progressive change.
These passion-driven pursuits are inevitably capital intensive and require support. Supreme Court Upholds Affirmative Action In College Admissions
HiIndia NewsdeskWASHINGTON, DC- The Supreme Court recently made a significant decision regarding affirmative action in college admissions. In a ruling authored by Chief Justice John Roberts on behalf of the conservative majority, the Court declared that colleges and universities can no longer consider race as a specific basis for admission. This decision has raised concerns and questions about its implications for international students and first-generation immigrants. The ruling implies that race can no longer be used as a determining factor in the admission process for colleges and universities. Affirmative action programs, which were designed to address historical inequalities and promote diversity on campuses, have often taken race into account as a factor in admissions decisions. However, this ruling asserts that such programs lack measurable objectives to justify the consideration of race and may perpetuate racial stereotypes without a clear endpoint.
Regarding the impact on international
students, the ruling does not specifically target them. International students, who are typically individuals from foreign countries seeking education in the United States, often face a different set of admission criteria, including evaluating their academic achievements, language proficiency, and potential contributions to campus diversity. While the ruling
eliminates the consideration of race for domestic applicants, it does not directly affect the factors considered for international students.
First-generation immigrants, who are individuals born in a different country and are the first in their families to seek higher education in the United States, may be indirectly affected
Florida’s New Immigration Law Prompts Migrant Workers To Seek Alternatives
A new Florida law implemented on Saturday no longer recognizes driver's licenses issued to undocumented immigrants from other states. This law, part of a comprehensive immigration bill signed by Governor Ron DeSantis, has prompted protests and concerns about the future of immigrant workers in sectors like tourism, hospitality, and agriculture. The law also includes penalties for hiring or transporting undocumented migrants, potentially affecting family members, and requires hospitals receiving Medicaid funds to inquire about patients' immigration status. Governor DeSantis argues that the legislation is necessary due to perceived failures in securing the border by the Biden administration. However,
critics express fears of family separation and uncertainty among workers and employers in labor-intensive industries.
City Of Chicago Takes Urgent Measures To Tackle Severe Air Pollution Caused By Canadian Wildfire Smoke
CHICAGO, IL – Air quality conditions in Chicago remained “very unhealthy” for the second consecutive day due to smoke from Canadian wildfires.
The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency issued an updated Air Quality Alert, predicting “unhealthy” conditions statewide and “unhealthy conditions for sensitive groups” for the following day. The City of Chicago urged all residents, especially vulnerable populations, to take precautions and avoid outdoor activities. Measures were
by this ruling. If these individuals are domestic applicants, their racial background will no longer be a factor in admissions decisions. However, it is important to note that colleges and universities can still consider various other factors, such as socioeconomic status, personal experiences, and achievements, to promote diversity and inclusion on campus. Therefore, while the ruling eliminates the explicit consideration of race, it does not eliminate the opportunity for firstgeneration immigrants to be considered holistically in the admissions process. It is essential to recognize that the Supreme Court’s ruling on affirmative action in college admissions has specific implications and limitations. The ruling applies to colleges and universities in the United States and pertains to the consideration of race as a specific basis for admission. However, institutions may still implement other diversity initiatives and consider a range of factors to achieve a diverse student body. It is advisable for international students and first-generation immigrants to consult with individual colleges and universities or relevant legal experts to understand how this ruling may impact their specific situations. Admission policies and practices may vary among institutions, and it is important to have accurate and up-to-date information when navigating the college application process.

WASHINGTON, DC – Democratic lawmakers have introduced a comprehensive and crucial bill designed to streamline the intricate process of obtaining green cards for vulnerable youth who are at risk of deportation. This proposed legislation, aptly named the “Green Card for Kids Act,” represents a significant step towards creating a pathway to permanent residency for young individuals who have endured harrowing experiences of abuse, neglect, or abandonment.
The primary objective of the “Green Card for Kids Act” is to simplify and expedite the green card application process for these vulnerable youth. By doing so, it seeks to provide them with a stable and secure future in the United States, shielding them from the imminent threat of deportation and offering a glimmer of hope in the face of adversity.
Under this proposed legislation, specific provisions would be established to
address the unique challenges faced by these young individuals. By acknowledging the circumstances of abuse, neglect, or abandonment that they have suffered, the bill aims to rectify the injustices inflicted upon them and provide a compassionate solution to their predicament. By streamlining the process, the bill intends to alleviate the burdensome bureaucratic hurdles that currently impede vulnerable youth from obtaining green cards. These unnecessary obstacles often exacerbate their already vulnerable situation, leaving them exposed to potential deportation despite their urgent need for protection and stability.
Furthermore, the “Green Card for Kids Act” underscores the humanitarian commitment of the Democratic lawmakers who introduced it. By recognizing the rights and needs of these young individuals, the bill seeks to demonstrate compassion and empathy towards those who have endured immense hardship and adversity.

When it comes to maintaining gorgeous voluminous hair, models definitely know a thing or two. Considering Fashion Week is synonymous with multiple hairstyling sessions, late nights, and lots of coffee, you realise that their great hair is the result of some serious amazing hair care routine. Dyson India got on a candid chat backstage with a few models, during the Dyson x Arpita Mehta show, and they shared the hair care tips they swear by.
Investing in a high-quality hairbrush: Anita Kumar, one of the top models in India, shared,“Some hairbrushes are really damaging to the hair as they’re far too hard and can pull and break the hair, leaving split ends. Investing in a good hairbrush can help care for your tresses each day.”
The Dyson Paddle brush is designed for smoothing hair when drying and styling. With a weighted handle for balance, and air-cushion suspension for scalp comfort.
Using Coconut Oil:
The age-old coconut oil is super nourishing and ultra-hydrating for tresses that need life after excessive styling. Pallavi Singh shared that one of the most simple but effective tricks is to use coconut oil on the scalp and ends and tie your hair into a shower cap. Leave it on for thirty minutes and wash it off with a clarifying shampoo to transform your hair and add shine. Self-styling with the right tools with less heat damage:
As models go through extensive heat styling during fashion shows, they try to avoid using heat while self-styling. But, on days when they really need to get that lustrous curl for a date night or outing with friends, they prefer using the Dyson AirwrapTM Multi-styler which helps in styling the hair with no extra heat damage. And, it saves a lot of time as they get salon-like hair at home.
Letting your hair dry naturally:
Letting your hair dry naturally helps in reviving your hair. Nisha Yadav swears by not using hair sprays and using avocado or olive oil as a hydrating mask which helps give her hair a day off.
Saving your hair from
mechanical damage:
Our hair goes through mechanical damage which can’t be reversed. To avoid such damage, many models suggested using an old T-shirt or a micro-fibre towel to wrap your hair after a wash. Wet strands are much more fragile and prone to breakage and the harsh fibres of a towel can be too aggressive. They also suggested using a satin pillow cover to help improve the health and appearance of your hair. Satin pillowcases are smooth and slippery, which means they create less friction with your hair than traditional cotton pillowcases. This can help prevent hair breakage, tangles, and frizz, especially if you tend to move around a lot in your sleep.

Vitamin D supplements may prevent heart attacks in people over 60s: Study
other cardiovascular drugs at the start of the trial, but the researchers said these results were not statistically significant. Overall, the researchers calculated that 172 people would need to take monthly vitamin D supplements to prevent one major cardiovascular event. "This protective effect could be more marked in those taking statins or other cardiovascular drugs at baseline," said Rachel E Neale, Professor, from QIMR along with other researchers. The team suggested further evaluation to help to clarify this issue.

Vitamin D supplements may reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events such as heart attacks among people aged over 60, finds a study.
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a general term for conditions affecting the heart or blood vessels and is one of the main causes of death globally. CVD events such as heart attacks and strokes are set to increase as populations continue to age and chronic diseases become more common.
Published by The BMJ, the study of 21,315 people showed that the rate of major cardiovascular events was 9 per cent lower in the vitamin D compared with the placebo group (equivalent to 5.8 fewer events per 1,000 participants).

The trial was carried out from 2014 to 2020 and involved 21,315 Australians aged 60-84 who randomly received one capsule of either 60,000 IU vitamin D (10,662 participants) or placebo (10,653 participants) taken orally at the beginning of each month for up to 5 years.
During the trial, 1,336 participants experienced a major cardiovascular event (6.6 per cent in the placebo group and 6 per cent in the vitamin D group).
The researchers acknowledge that there may be a small underestimate of events and said the findings may not apply to other populations, particularly those where a higher proportion of people are vitamin D deficient. However, this was a large trial with extremely high retention and adherence, and almost complete data on cardiovascular events and mortality outcomes.
Canadian Wildfire Smoke Triggers Air Quality Alerts for 120M+ Americans
More than 120 million people across more than a dozen US states from the Midwest to the East Coast are under air quality alerts, as smoke from Canadian wildfires continues to sweep across the country. Canada is seeing its worst fire season on record as hundreds of blazes rage across the country, with more than 250 burning "out of control," according to the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre on Thursday.
As massive clouds of smoke drift into the US, air quality alerts have been issued for more than a dozen US states including New York, Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Delaware and Maryland, according to the US National Weather Service (NWS).
As of Thursday morning, Washington D.C., Chicago and Detroit were among the cities with the worst air quality in the world, according to IQ Air's Air Quality Index.
More than a third of the US population is under air quality alerts, prompting officials to call on the public to take safety precautions just weeks after similar wildfire smoke blanketed the Northeast, said a report of CNN. The NWS has warned that, with no end
in sight to the Canadian wildfires, poor air quality is likely to continue. Officials are concerned that the smoke could hinder travels and lead to flight delays and cancellations for Americans during the July 4 holiday, Xinhua news agency reported.
Canadian wildfire smoke is causing hazy sky as far away as Europe. Health officials are urging those in the unhealthy or worse air quality categories to refrain from prolonged or heavy
exertion.
Wildfire smoke and ash can irritate eyes, nose, throat and lungs, making people cough or wheeze and can make it hard to breathe, according to the US CDC. The most effective way to protect from wildfire smoke is to stay indoors or limit time outdoors. This is especially important for those with heart or lung conditions who are at higher risk for adverse health effects, according to the CDC.
The Aviation Health Safety Protocol (AHSP) was issued by the two agencies in May 2020, and aimed to promote a harmonised approach to measures on curbing the spread of the virus, reports Xinhua news agency. The protocol also aimed to reduce disturbance to flight operations while ensuring safety for the European population, the ECDC said. The decision to retire the protocol was taken in the light of decreasing and stable trends regarding Covid-19 in the European Union (EU)/European Economic Area (EEA) since March 2023.
The World Health Organization (WHO) said on May 5 that "Covid-19 is now an established and ongoing health issue which no longer constitutes a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC)".
Diet soda sweetener may soon be declared cancer causing agent: Report
Aspartame, one of the most commonly used artificial sweeteners in foods and beverages, is soon likely to be declared as a cancer causing agent by the World Health Organization's (WHO) cancer research arm, according to a media report.
The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) is expected to list aspartame, used in products from Coca-Cola diet sodas to Mars' Extra chewing gum, in July as "possibly carcinogenic to humans", as per a media report.
The ruling, reportedly finalised earlier this month, is based on all the published evidence against aspartame and also includes recommendations from the WHO’s expert committee on food additives, known as JECFA, as well as from national regulators.
