US Fed raises interest rates for the 11th time in 16 months

Washington, July 27 (IANS) The US Federal Reserve raised interest rates by a quarter percentage point Wednesday, making it the 11th in the last 16 months in its continuing efforts to tame inflation. The new hike, which was announced after a two-day meeting of the Fed’s top decision-making body, take the rate to the highest level in 22 years — to between 5.25 and 5.50 per cent.

"Tighter credit conditions for households and businesses are likely to weigh on economic activity, hiring and inflation," the Fed said in a statement, adding: "The extent of these effects remains uncertain. The committee remains highly attentive to inflation risks."

The Fed is walking a thin line here. The interest rate hikes will curb spending as desired to curb inflation, but it could

Joe Lewis: UK tycoon bailed in US fraud case but can't use superyacht

David Grusch testified that he "absolutely" believes the government is in possession of unidentified anomalous phenomenon, or UAPs -- which has replaced UFO in official parlance -- as well as remains of their operators. "I was informed, in the course of my official duties, of a multi-decade UAP crash retrieval and reverse-engineering program," Grusch said.

"I made the decision, based on the data I collected, to report this information to my superiors and multiple inspectors general, and in effect becoming a whistleblower," he said.

Pressed for details in the course of the hearing, Grusch repeatedly said he could not comment in a public setting because the information is classified. He said the US government is hiding information on UAPs not only from the public but from Congress, and that he "personally interviewed" people with direct knowledge of non-human craft.

Rudy Giuliani, Donald Trump's former lawyer, has conceded he made "false" statements by accusing two Georgia election workers of ballot fraud.

But in a court filing, Mr Giuliani also maintained that his statements were protected by freedom of speech. Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss testified to Congress last year that they received threats over the false claims.

The ex-New York City mayor could still face sanctions from the court, including legal fees and costs The lawsuit was filed in 2021 by Ms Freeman and Ms Moss, who are mother and daughter respectively.

Hunter Biden's plea deal collapses in court

A New York City court has imposed sweeping restrictions on British billionaire Joe Lewis as he awaits trial on insider trading charges.

Mr Lewis, 86, pleaded not guilty and was granted $300m (£230m) bail. But the Manhattan judge required him to surrender his passport and banned him from using his superyacht. Mr Lewis is not allowed to travel abroad, including to the Bahamas oceanside resort he reportedly co-owns with Tiger

Woods and Justin Timberlake. The tycoon, whose family trust owns Tottenham Hotspur football club, can still use his private plane - for business - within the boundaries of restricted domestic travel. During Wednesday's hearing before Judge Valerie Figueredo, the bail bond was secured by Mr Lewis' 223ft (68 metre) yacht, the Aviva, and private aircraft.Mr Lewis was charged with 16 counts of security fraud, and three counts of conspiracy for crimes alleged to have taken place between 201321, according to the 29-page indictment.

Indian-American Democrats support Ramaswamy amid attack on Hindu faith

HiIndia Newsdesk

Washington: (IANS) Two prominent Indian-American Congressmen have come out in support of Vivek Ramaswamy, who is seeking the Republican Party’s presidential nomination, after a televangelist targeted his Hindu faith in a recent sermon asking citizens not to vote for him.

Hank Kunneman, the senior pastor of the non-denominational Lord of Hosts Church in Nebraska, said Ramaswamy is Hindu and therefore anyone who supports him "will have a fight with God".

Reacting to Kunneman's disparaging comments, Congressmen Raja Krishnamoorthi and Ro Khanna said they don't agree much with Ramaswamy but condemned the "bigoted remarks" against the 37-year-old.

"I don’t agree with @VivekGRamaswamy on much, but one thing is certain: all political parties in America should welcome individuals of all faiths, including Hindus.

I condemn the bigoted remarks directed toward Ramaswamy, and I hope that Republican electeds and others do the same," Krishnamoorthi tweeted on Tuesday.

Hunter Biden

An agreement expected to see US President Joe Biden's son, Hunter, plead guilty to tax charges and admit a gun offence has dramatically fallen apart in court.

The plea deal, negotiated over several weeks, was likely to spare the younger Mr Biden prison time. But a judge on Wednesday said she could not "rubber stamp the agreement". The case marks the first time the justice department has charged the child of a sitting president. Hunter Biden's lawyers have been given 14 days to hash out a new deal with the prosecution.

It follows a five-year investigation into the finances of the US first son, who arrived on Wednesday morning at the court in Wilmington, Delaware.

IMF urges Delhi to lift rice export curbs

Israeli protesters vow no let-up in anti-reform fight

Sinéad O'Connor: Irish singer dies aged 56

In the current environment, these types of restrictions are likely to exacerbate volatility on food prices in the rest of the world, Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas, Chief Economist, IMF, said The International Monetary Fund has said it would "encourage" India to remove restrictions on export of a certain category of rice, which, it said, would have an impact on global inflation.

The Indian government on July 20 had banned the export of nonbasmati white rice to boost domestic supply and keep retail prices under check during the upcoming festive season. This type of rice constitutes about 25 per cent of total rice exported from the country. There would be no change in export policy of par-boiled non-basmati rice and basmati rice, which forms the bulk of exports, the food ministry had said in a statement. In the current environment, these types of restrictions are likely to exacerbate volatility on food prices in the rest of the world. They can also lead to retaliatory measures, PierreOlivier Gourinchas, Chief Economist, International Monetary Fund (IMF), told a press conference here. "So, they are certainly something that we would encourage the removal of these types of export restrictions, because they can be harmful globally," he said in response to a question. The total exports of non-basmati white rice from India was USD 4.2 million in 2022-23 as against USD 2.62 million in the preceding year.

After the sound and fury of Monday's mass protests around Israel's parliament, the Knesset, Jerusalem is calm.

In Sacher Park, a protest camp since the weekend, the tents have gone, leaving flocks of hooded crows to peck over piles of rubbish.

At the busy junction just above the Supreme Court, scene of a noisy standoff late into the night, traces linger of the evil smelling "skunk" water, which police fired at protesters in a vain effort to disperse the crowds.

But under the fierce summer sun, traffic flows once more and all seems normal.

After months of a simmering political

crisis, Monday felt like an inflection point, full of furious rhetoric and deeply felt emotion.

What happens next?

"We are taking a deep breath and looking forward," says Shikma Bressler, founder of the Black Flag, one of several groups involved in this year's mass protests against the government's proposed judicial reforms.

"Yesterday, we lost the battle," the renowned physicist tells me. "But we have started a movement, a huge crowd of people that were not aware of each other and their strengths. Now we need to realise how to use them."

In a statement, the singer's family said: "It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad. "Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time."

She was best known for her single Nothing Compares 2 U, released in 1990, which went on to hit number one around the world.

China foreign minister's removal sparks speculation

The population of Japanese nationals declined for a 14th straight year in 2022, with a record low of 772,000 births in Japan significantly exceeded by a record high of 1.57 million deaths, Xinhua news agency quoted the survey as saying.

Speculation on Qin Gang remained rampant on Wednesday, a day after he was removed as China's foreign minister just seven months into the job. No reason was given for Mr Qin's removal, which was announced after an emergency meeting on Tuesday. His predecessor Wang Yi has been reappointed to the post.

Official silence over Mr Qin's unexplained disappearance from public view for the past month had sparked speculation both in China and abroad. Social media on Wednesday was full of searches and speculation over his abrupt dismissal.

Colonisation by British 'luckiest thing' to happen to Australia - John Howard

Colonisation was "the luckiest thing that happened" to Australia, the nation's secondlongest serving Prime Minister John Howard has said. His remarks were made in relation to a historic referendum due to take place this year on Indigenous recognition.

If successful, the vote will change Australia's constitution to give First Nations peoples a greater say over the laws and policies that affect them. But the debate has seen a surge of divisive commentary. Speaking to the Australian Newspaper about the upcoming vote, Mr Howard described colonisation as "inevitable".

"I do hold the view that the luckiest thing that happened to this country was being colonised by the British," he said. "Not that they were perfect by any means, but they were infinitely more successful and beneficent colonisers than other European countries."

He also predicted that the Voice to Parliament initiative would fail to pass, leaving a "new cockpit of conflict" over "how to help Indigenous people" in its wake, while accusing its proponents of failing to sell it to the Australian public.

PM Narendra Modi said, “On the basis of track record, I will make the country believe, in the third term, economy will be among world’s top three”

Her condition was brought to light byAmjed Ullah Khan, a spokesperson of the Majlis Bachao Tehreek

A woman from Hyderabad, Syeda Lulu Minhaj Zaidi, who went to the USA to pursue a master’s degree, was seen on a street in Chicago on the verge of starvation. Her condition was brought to light by Amjed Ullah Khan, a spokesperson of the Majlis Bachao Tehreek (MBT), a party based in Telangana.

In a tweet, Mr. Khan shared a video of the woman who is seen sitting on a corner of the street with a few belongings. The woman is seen having trouble remembering her name at first. When asked about her condition, she explained that she was taken to a hospital for treatment, but her health deteriorated further after blood samples were extracted from her body for testing.

Her mother Syeda Wahaj Fatima has written to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar asking for help and bring her daughter back to India.

‘’Syeda Lulu Minhaj Zaidi from Hyd went to pursue MS from TRINE University, Detroit was found in a very bad condition in Chicago, her mother appealed @ DrSJaishankar to bring back her daughter,’’ the tweet reads. She wrote, “My daughter Syeda Lulu Minhaj Zaidi, a resident of Maula Ali in Telangana, went to pursue her Masters at TRINE University in Detroit during August 2021 and was often in touch with us. But, for the past two months, she has not been in touch with me and recently we came to know through two Hyderabad youths that my daughter is in depression and someone stole her belongings, which left her to starvation. My daughter was spotted on the roads of Chicago in the USA.”

She also shared that her daughter could be traced with the help of Mohammed Minhaj Akhter and requested the Embassy of India in Washington DC and the Indian Consulate in Chicago to bring her back.

Reacting to the post, the Consulate General of India in Chicago wrote, ‘’We have just come to know about the case of Ms. Syed Lulu Minhaj from. Please DM to keep in touch.’’

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today promised an unprecedented growth of the country during his third term in power, which, he said, will catapult it to one of the top three slots. Sending out a message of development and growth at the inauguration of Delhi’s revamped Pragati Maidan, he said, “From east to west, north to south, India’s infrastructure is changing... The world’s highest rail bridge in India, the longest tunnel at the highest altitude is in India, the highest motorable road, the largest stadium, the largest statue -- all of it is in India”.

The economic growth, he added, will keep pace with the country’ aspirations.

“In our first term, India was in the 10th spot in terms of economy. In my second term, it is the world’s fifth largest economy. On the basis of track record, I will make the country believe, in the third term, economy will be among world’s top three,” he added. “In my third term, India will

stand among the top three economies. And this is Modi’s guarantee”.

The International Exhibition-cumConvention Centre, now renamed “Bharat Mandapam”, also became the site of a political pitch ahead of next year’s general election as PM Modi compared the growth of the last nine years with the cumulative growth of six decades since Independence.

US citizens currently enjoy visa-free access to most E.U. countries, however, this privilege is set to change soon. According to the official travel site of the European Union, visitors from more than 60 countries that are visa-exempt will be required to apply for European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) approval ahead of their trips starting in 2024. Visitors will need to pay about $8 to apply for ETIAS authorization when traveling to European countries.

The new travel authorization program is being implemented by the Europen

Union to protect and strengthen its borders amid mounting terror threats in Europe. ‘’The rules of travel to Europe have changed. Starting from 2024, some 1.4 billion people from over 60 visa-exempt countries are required to have a travel authorisation to enter most European countries,’’ the EU website noted. Notably, ETIAS is an electronic travel authorization linked to a traveler’s passport. All U.S. citizens who want to travel to the 27 member countries of Europe’s Schengen Zone will need to register with ETIAS or risk being turned away at the border. Once the authorization is secured, however, it is valid for up to three years or until the visitor’s passport expires.

Lakshmi Krishnaprasad, director of Nethrajyothi College, also appealed to the people on Tuesday not to spread false news "that videos of hundreds of college girls have been filmed and shared". The director claimed that "the girl student said she had got the video deleted"."She said that since the three girls are college mates, she won’t lodge complaints against them," Krishnaprasad said, adding the management had inquired about the incident. The police were informed immediately and the mobile phone has been handed over to them, she said. The three girls who took the video are classmates and the other girl belongs to another class. When the inquiry was made, no video was found in the mobile, the college director said.

"The three girls have confessed that they did it for a prank. We have banned the use of mobile phones, and bringing mobile phones to the college was a mistake. The girls were suspended," she said. "Using the incident, false news is being spread that videos of hundreds of girls are taken. We don’t see religion in college students.

The people belonging to the religion of three girls have staged a protest condemning their act. I request not to spread false news," she added.

“East India Company, Indian Mujahideen”: PM Modi’s Attack On Opposition Front

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today slammed the opposition as “directionless” and cited the “Indian Mujahideen” and “Popular Front of India” as he derided the opposition alliance for its new name, INDIA.

“I have never seen such a directionless opposition,” BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad quoted the Prime Minister as saying at the weekly meeting of the BJP parliamentary party.

PM Modi also attacked the opposition grouping on the name it gave itself at a meeting of 26 parties in Bengaluru last week to discuss strategy for the 2024 national election - INDIA, an acronym for Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance.

“They keep praising themselves for the name INDIA. Indian National Congress. East India company. Indian Mujahideen. Popular Front of India - these are also

Modi to inaugurate Semicon India 2023 on Friday

The Gujarat government called Semicon India 2023 a prestigious national-level event, which promises to be a catalyst for the semiconductor industry’s progress. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will on Friday inaugurate Semicon India 2023, an event focussing on semiconductors, in Gujarat’s Gandhinagar.

Union ministers Ashwini Vaishnaw, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, and Rajeev Chandrasekhar will be among those who will attend the event along with heads of leading semiconductor firms.

The Prime Minister described the opposition as “defeated, tired, hopeless, with a singlepoint agenda - opposing Modi.”

INDIA. Just using the name INDIA does not mean anything,” Mr Prasad quoted the Prime Minister as saying. People cannot be misled merely by the use of the country’s name, he said. The sharp comments come in the middle

of a standoff in parliament over the Manipur crisis and repeated disruptions over the opposition’s demand for a statement by PM Modi on issues like a viral video of two women paraded naked by a mob and assaulted in May.

The Prime Minister described the opposition as “defeated, tired, hopeless, with a single-point agenda - opposing Modi”. Their conduct showed they had made up their mind to remain the opposition, PM Modi reportedly said. He expressed confidence that the BJP would win the 2024 polls easily with people’s support.

The row over Manipur has stalled the government’s plans to push key legislation in parliament. Both houses of parliament have been adjourned repeatedly without much business since the monsoon session started last Thursday, a day after the Manipur horror video emerged.

Opposition Front INDIA Plans No Confidence Motion In Lok Sabha: Sources

New York, July 24 (IANS) A speeding cop, who struck and killed a 23-yearold Indian student in January this year, has admitted in newly-released bodycam footage that he “f–ked up” after the tragic crash in Seattle.

Jaahnavi Kandula, a student of Northeastern University campus in South Lake Union, was walking near Dexter Avenue North and Thomas Street when she was hit by a Seattle Police vehicle driven by Kevin Dave on January 23.

Dave, who was responding to a “high priority” call that day at 8 pm, had chirped his siren, but did not have it running consistently, as he plowed into Kandula, The New York Post reported.

New Delhi: As the government plans a big legislative push in the Parliament to break through the logjam in both houses over discussion on Manipur, Opposition alliance INDIA is planning to move a no-confidence motion against the government in the Lok Sabha, sources said. A proposal to submit the notice was discussed at a meeting of

the constituents of the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) on Tuesday morning. Sources said after weighing various options to force Prime Minister Narendra Modi to speak in Parliament on the situation in strife-torn Manipur, it was decided that this would be an effective way to compel the government to initiate a discussion on the issue.

Prosecutors, who released the footage, were weighing charges against Dave for his failure to deploy his siren to “warn others of the emergency nature of the situation,” as required by police protocol. “I f–ked up,” Dave was heard saying after the accident at the intersection where he accelerated up to 74 miles per hour at one point, much higher than the prescribed limits of 25 and 20 mph respectively. According to the footage, moments after reaching the top speed, he slowed down the car before striking Kandula at the intersection.

The bodycam video also showed Dave performing CPR on Kandula after the collision. “Lights were on. I was chirping the sirens…she was in the crosswalk. She saw me, she started running through the crosswalk.

Amit Shah Urges Opposition Discussion on Manipur

After Opposition’s No-Confidence Motion Plan, Coordinated Attack From BJP

At the weekly meet of the BJP parliamentary Party earlier today, PM Modi had called the opposition “directionless”.

Congress. East India company. Indian Mujahideen. Popular Front of India - these are also INDIA. Just using the name INDIA does not mean anything,” senior leader Ravi Shankar Prasad quoted him as saying.

Shortly after, BJP JP Nadda cited the example of a “child who failed his exam”.

Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday said he has written to leaders of Opposition in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha that the government is ready for discussion on the Manipur issue for as long as they want.

In identical letters to Kharge, who is the Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha, and Chowdhury, the Congress leader in Lok Sabha, Shah said the government is ready to discuss the Manipur issue and urged all to cooperate, rising above party lines.

“I hope that all the parties will cooperate in resolving this important issue,” he said.

Proceedings in both Houses of Parliament remain disrupted from day one of the Monsoon session with the Opposition parties demanding a statement by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the Manipur violence before a discussion.

IMF bumps up India’s 2023 growth projection to 6.1

Washington (IANS)

The International Monetary fund on Tuesday projected that the Indian economy will grow by 6.1 per cent in 2023, which is 0.2 points — 20 basis percentage points — higher than its April forecast. The fund attributed the upwardly revised projection to “stronger domestic investment”.

The forecast for 2024 remained unchanged at 6.4 per cent. The fund also said the Chinese recovery from Covid-19 related restrictions and lockdown is “losing steam” after showing a big boost in February and March. The forecast for the Chinese economy remained unchanged — 5.2 per cent for 2023 and 4.5 per cent for 2024. Titled “Near-Term Resilience, Persistent Challenges”, the fund’s new World Economic Outlook report said the the global economic growth will fall from the 2022 level of 3.5 to 3 per cent in both 2023 and 2024, although the new projection was marginally higher than the one issued by the fund in April. The report said anti-inflationary rate hikes ordered by authorities around the world as “continues to weigh on economic activity”.

“There was a child who failed in all his exams. He was hated by his classmates and neighbours. So the parents thought of changing his name to change his perception. Isn’t the case similar to that of I.N.D.I.A?” Mr Nadda tweeted. The big push came in the evening, when ministers and key leaders, including Amit Shah, S Jaishankar, Pralhad Joshi and Kiren Rijiju tweeted.

“In a bid to get rid of its hounding past, the opposition alliance has changed its nomenclature. But merely changing the name to I.N.D.I.A. will not erase their past deeds from public memory. The people of our country are wise enough to see through this propaganda and will treat this old product with a new label with the same disapproval,” read the tweet from Amit Shah.

Rahul Gandhi Counters PM Modi on Manipur

Hitting back at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his remarks on the opposition alliance, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday said “call us what you want”, but “we are INDIA” and “will rebuild the idea of India in Manipur”.

Modi slammed the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) as the most directionless the country has ever seen and cited reviled names, such as East India Company and Indian Mujahideen, to assert that people cannot be misled merely by the use of the country’s name.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi said the prime minister told a BJP Parliamentary Party meeting that the conduct of the opposition has been such that as if it has decided to stay in the opposition for long.

Hitting back at Modi, Gandhi tweeted: “Call us whatever you want, Mr Modi. We are INDIA. We will help heal Manipur and wipe the tears of every woman and child. We will bring back love and peace for all her people.” “We will rebuild the idea of India in Manipur,” the former Congress chief said.

Sudip Sharma: No one wants to make an NH10 for theatres today

I’m a non-violent person. I have never even got into a heated argument with anyone,” laughs Sudip Sharma, aware that his screen offerings might suggest otherwise. But then, it takes a calm mind to understand the complex subject of violence, its roots, and different manifestations.

After Paatal Lok (2020), Kohrra is creator-writer Sharma’s latest attempt to examine the dark side of humans. “We all carry that darkness inside us as individuals, families and societies. That’s fascinating to explore,” he begins.

While Kohrra has opened to unanimous praise, Sharma has moved on to the second season of Paatal Lok, which is due next year. So, has he given

up on theatrical offerings in favour of long-format stories? Something like that, says Sharma, whose last theatrical venture was Laal Kaptaan (2019), in which he served as a dialogue writer. Reason—“We stopped making films that interested people like me,” he says.

“No one wants to make a film like NH10 or Udta Punjab for theatres today. The thought—if it’s theatrical, it has to be entertaining and understood by all—basically means it has to be dumbed down. They want you to write the kind of films that are getting made. I don’t even watch those films. How can I make them?”

CBFC asks Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani makers to cut Mamta Banerjee references

Questions arose when the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) recently certified the film with significant cuts

Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, has been making headlines ever since its trailer release. With the sizzling on-screen pairing of Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt, audiences are eagerly anticipating this romantic comedy. However, amidst the excitement, controversy struck as the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) recently certified the film with a fair share of cuts.

The trailer itself had garnered massive attention, giving viewers a glimpse into the intriguing chemistry between Rocky and Rani. It portrayed their struggles to win over each other's families, setting the stage for a rollercoaster of emotions. But with the CBFC certification, some unexpected alterations had to be made.

One of the major changes was the replacement of an abusive word with 'behan di,' which led to a public debate about creative freedom and censorship.

Additionally, the renowned rum brand, Old Monk, was renamed as 'Bold Monk,' leading to mixed reactions from fans and brand enthusiasts alike.

The CBFC further demanded the removal of the term 'Lok Sabha,' a reference that stirred curiosity among the audience. The scene featuring a portrait of Noble Laureate Rabindranath Tagore at Rani's house underwent modifications as well. A particular word was replaced with 'Koi filter,' leaving moviegoers puzzled and speculating about the context. Moreover, a dialogue mentioning West Bengal Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, was asked to be deleted, raising eyebrows about the extent of political influence on creative expression. In another scene set in a lingerie shop, the word 'bra' was substituted with 'item,' sparking discussions about moral policing and societal taboos.

Accuses PM Modi of Distortion and Diversion

“Not A Brick Removed...,” Supreme Court Told As Gyanvapi Survey Begins

the iconic Kashi Vishwanath Temple at Varanasi.

The centre, however, assured the court that the survey will in no way alter the structure and stressed that “not a brick has been removed nor is it planned”. Solicitor General of India Tushar Mehta told the court that the survey plan includes only measurement, photography and radar studies.

The Congress on Sunday said Prime Minister Narendra Modi is a champion of “distortion and diversion” and tends to defame others because of his own “insecurities”.

Taking strong objection to the whataboutery that the Prime Minister triggered by clubbing the explosive situation in Manipur with states such as Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh instead of sincerely analysing and tackling the crisis in the northeastern state, Congress communications chief Jairam Ramesh told The Telegraph: “Modi doesn’t lie because it is in his interest. He lies because it is in his nature.”

Ramesh added: “Modi is the Guru of five Ds when it comes to dealing with pressing issues: Deny, Deflect, Divert, Distort and Defame. Manipur is the latest example of this fundamental character of the man. Time and again he has demonstrated what a huge bundle of insecurities he is.”

We record the statement to the extent that no excavation at the site is contemplated at this stage for a period of one week until next week Monday,” Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud said, taking the centre’s submissions on record.

The mosque hit headlines in 2021 after a group of Hindu women approached an Uttar Pradesh court for permission to worship deities in the Gyanvapi complex.

Tribals Seek President’s Intervention in Manipur Peace

The Indian cricket team re-wrote the Test record books following a rare display of ultra-attacking long-format cricket on day four of the second Test against West Indies at Port of Spain on Monday, becoming the team with the highest team run-rate in a Test inning lasting a minimum of 20 overs. While England drawing polarising reactions from Test cricket lovers, and purists with their ‘Bazball’ school of cricket, which focuses on positive and attacking gameplay and the need to achieve clear results, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma and coach Rahul Dravid seemed to have taken a leaf from England’s book to present to fans what could be the first exhibition of ‘Dravball’.

In their second innings, the Indian team went into white-ball cricket mode and smashed 181 runs in just 24 overs before declaring the innings. India scored their runs at a run rate of 7.54, the highest in Tests by a team during an inning lasting at least 20 overs.

Leaders of several opposition parties on Monday staged a protest in Parliament complex demanding that Prime Minister Narendra Modi make a statement in the House on the Manipur issue. Holding placards and banners that read “INDIA for Manipur” and “INDIA demands PM’s statement on Manipur”, the opposition parties raised slogans against the government in front of Mahatma Gandhi’s statue in Parliament complex. Speaking to reporters, Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun

“It is shameful that the prime minister is making a statement outside the House, when Parliament is in session. It is his duty to make a comprehensive statement inside Parliament on Manipur violence,” the Congress leader said.

“We are requesting the Chairman of Rajya Sabha and the Speaker of Lok Sabha that the PM should make a statement on the situation in Manipur. We want a discussion under Rule 167 but the Modi government wants a short duration discussion under Rule 176 for half an hour.We want under Rule 267 under which there can also be voting,” he said.

Gurvinder Nath was delivering pizza at around 2:10 am on July 9 in Mississauga’s Britannia and Creditview roads, when unknown suspects confronted him and tried to steal his vehicle, CTV News channel reported.

Police’s Homicide Bureau said, adding that investigators have obtained an audio recording of the Pizza Pizza order placed before the attack.

After Nath arrived, he was “violently assaulted” and left critically injured by a suspect who robbed him of his vehicle and fled the scene, police said.

Hindu Community Concerned Over 'Oppenheimer' Movie's Portrayal of Sacred Text

RENO, NV- Hindus are expressing their displeasure over the handling of the revered ancient Hindu scripture, “The Bhagavad Gita,” in the recently released film “Oppenheimer,” which premiered on July 21. Rajan Zed, a prominent Hindu statesman and President of the Universal Society of Hinduism, voiced his concerns in Nevada.

Zed stated that the disrespectful treatment of the sacred Bhagavad Gita and, consequently, Lord Krishna, who holds great reverence in Hinduism, is inappropriate and distressing to devotees. He urged director Christopher Nolan and Universal Pictures to edit the scenes related to Hindu texts, presenting them with dignity and respect. The inappropriate use of Hindu scriptures, deities, symbols, or concepts for commercial or other purposes is not acceptable, as it hurts the sentiments of devotees and diminishes the sanctity of Hinduism.

While acknowledging physicist Julius Robert Oppenheimer’s interest in and familiarity with Hindu texts, as well as his learning of Sanskrit to read the original works, Zed emphasized that Christopher Nolan and Universal Pictures should have handled the holy scripture with greater maturity. Hinduism, being the oldest and third largest religion in the world with around 1.2 billion followers, deserves to be treated seriously and not taken frivolously. Zed asserted that symbols

of any faith should be handled with care and respect.

Zed clarified that Hindus support

artistic expression and freedom of speech, but faith is something sacred, and trivializing it can be hurtful to its followers. Insensitive treatment of faith traditions can lead to the distortion of serious spiritual doctrines and revered symbols.

Hindus welcome Hollywood’s exploration of Hinduism but expect it to be done seriously and respectfully, without distorting its concepts and symbols for ulterior motives. Zed suggested that Hollywood executives undergo training in religious and cultural sensitivity to better understand the sentiments of audiences and communities when creating new projects. He and other Hindu scholars are willing to provide resources and expertise on Hinduism-related matters if needed by the makers of “Oppenheimer” or other Hollywood executives.

Sanctuary Cities Grapple with Undocumented Migrant Influx

NEW YORK, NY- In recent years, major metropolitan areas in the U.S. have embraced progressive immigration policies by declaring themselves safe havens for illegal immigrants. However, the financial and social impacts of these policies have now become apparent, leading some local leaders to reconsider their stance. Since President Joe Biden took office, millions of illegal immigrants have entered the country, with many seeking refuge in these self-proclaimed “sanctuary cities.” The influx has overwhelmed some cities, prompting them to express concern about their capacity to handle the flood of migrants. New York City Mayor Eric Adams publicly stated that the city cannot handle any more migrants and plans to distribute flyers at the southern border discouraging illegal immigrants from coming to NYC. Chicago also faced concerns from residents about the increase in migrants and the taxpayer funds being spent to support them. The state of Illinois had subsidized the cost of undocumented immigrant health care for those over the age of 65, but due to ballooning costs, the program was scaled back.

New Delhi: (IANS) Former England captain Michael Vaughan described the Australian cricket team as fortunate in retaining the Ashes, pointing out that rain helped the visitors.

The entire final day of the fourth Test was lost due to rain in Manchester on Sunday and the drawn match. The result means that the Ashes urn will be headed back to Australia regardless of the outcome in the fifth Test of an enthralling series at The Oval that starts on Thursday. England needed five wickets to force a win with Australia needing 61 runs to force the hosts into batting again. The Ben Stokes-led side was in a dominant position for the majority of the match, but they were denied a crack at victory due to rain not allowing any play to happen on day five.

Mumbai: (IANS) India's Sumit Nagal won his second ATP Challenger title of the year with a straight sets victory over fifth seed Dalibor Svrcina of the

Czech Republic in the Tampere Open in Tampere, Finland, on Sunday. Nagal, who is seeded seventh in the event, defeated the fifth-seeded Svrcina 6-4, 7-5 in the final. This was Sumit Nagal's fourth ATP Challenger title overall.

On Sunday against Svrcina, Nagal went down an early break after losing serve in the second game as the Czech took a 3-0 lead. The 25-year-old from Jhajjar in Haryana, broke back his opponent's serve to reduce the margin to 3-4 and then broke Svrcina's serve again in the ninth game to take a 5-4 lead.

Ashes 2023: I don't think there will be huge celebrations, says Cummins

Manchester,: (IANS) Australia captain Pat Cummins said his team will refrain from celebrating the fact they have retained the Ashes and will put all their efforts into winning the final Test of the series in London and claiming a first series triumph on England soil since 2001. The entire final day of the fourth Test was lost due to rain here on Sunday and the drawn match ensured Australia holds on to their 2-1 series lead and will retain the Ashes yet again regardless of the outcome in the fifth Test of an enthralling series at The Oval that starts on Thursday. And while Cummins admits Australia had achieved what they set out to do at the start of the tour by regaining the Ashes, the captain feels there is some unfinished business within the squad and is eyeing off a first series triumph in England for 22 years. "It's a bit of a strange one," Cummins said after the drawn Test at Old Trafford.

"As a group (we are) proud that we've retained the Ashes but it's off the back of not our greatest week. It feels like it's good to retain the Ashes, but we know we've got a fair bit of work to do for next week.

"I don't think there will be huge celebrations. Maybe a bit of a pat on the back for retaining the (Ashes). There's been a lot of work gone into putting us into a position where a draw does make us retain the Ashes. But there's a Test match starting in three days so that's going to be our full focus. "It's a pretty similar group to 2019 when we retained it and we all came away feeling OK but we felt like we'd just missed what we'd come over to achieve. In some regards whatever happened today wouldn't really change how we look at next week. We want to win it to make sure we win it outright," he was quoted as saying by ICC.

Where does India stand in the 3D fashion tech revolution?

It is the season of all things slow. In the fashion world, slower production cycles, sustainable fabrics, and limited editions are now the norm among niche and luxury labels. This move includes the adoption of 3D technology which is not just resulting in cutting-edge designs, but also ranking high on the sustainability quotient. Perhaps why we are now seeing the likes of couture houses such as Dior, Burberry, and Louis Vuitton, among others, join the list of prominent sports brands who have been working with 3D tech for a while. Recent fashion weeks are proof of this. At the Paris Fashion Week this January, five 3D printed shoes were launched, including Dior’s Carlo black lace-up Derbys with a lattice structure, a lightweight puffer boot by Danish brand Rains, and a sneaker by Reebok (in partnership with Dutch brand Botter), which was manufactured using advanced computational techniques and an HP Multi Jet Fusion 3D printer in 15 days.

The Indian take

While such experiments are now more common internationally, the Indian story is quite different.

Designer Vaishali S, who made her international debut with Milan Fashion Week (MFW) in 2021, followed by the Paris Couture Week, is known for her love for Nature, and a signature cording technique that she uses on a range of textiles. At the 2022 edition of MFW, Vaishali’s deconstructed saris and dresses with 3D-mounted flowers caught everyone’s eye. And who can forget American rapper Cardi B’s electrifying

custom-made gown crafted by Indian fashion designer Gaurav Gupta for the 2023 Grammy’s? The royal blue cutout sculptural 3D dress with a trail and headgear covering one eye was trending online for days, making it to Gaurav’s list of experimental sculpted designs. However, such experiments among Indian couturiers are few and far between. “3D fashion, for the time being, is a term that I use a lot, but with a different meaning. On my garments, 3D means my effort in making them with a 3D visual, like sculptures that can be admired from four different sides,” says Vaishali, adding, “I did try and use 3D for a better representation on my website, and also for a fashion show, but the end result is really still too cold and mechanic, well away with the sensations I want to communicate with my creations.”

Designer David Abraham of Abraham & Thakore believes that 3D printing is “just one more form of technology that will be added to the many existing technologies that are being used in the world of textiles and garment making”. He adds, “It is sure to play a role, but we cannot forget that the most extolled form of fashion is the couture which is a celebration of handicraft.” Having said that, he agrees that the technology can be “enormously useful” in the creation of 3D prototypes such as footwear and bags, and small accessories such as buckles, button closures, etc.

The sustainability quotient

Since it is made on demand, 3D printed fashion does not produce much material waste, making it far more sustainable than fast fashion. Virtual fashion’s rapid adoption in gaming and virtual worlds is fast becoming mainstream, says Chandralika Hazarika, co-founder of Bengaluru-based BigThinx, which works on visualisation solutions for fashion and retail brands across the US, Europe, and India. “3D design techniques can help in prototyping and sampling for resource efficiency and is time saving. It also allows local printing, avoiding the need to ship ordered items from distant places. As a result, customer returns can be minimised and emissions associated with this are negligible compared to current methods,” she elaborates on the eco-angle to tech in fashion.

You have to keep in mind this week that your words will make things better and your words will spoil things.

Strict action, including possible capital punishment, to be ensured, says CM Biren Singh

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh

Thursday said a thorough investigation is underway into the incident of two women being paraded naked in the state over two months ago and strict action, including possible capital punishment, will follow.

He also said there is absolutely no place for such heinous acts in society.

“My hearts go out to the two women who were subjected to a deeply disrespectful and inhumane act, as shown in the distressing video that surfaced yesterday.

India Plans Electricity Diplomacy To Check China In Southeast Asia: Report

The grid linkages, which an industry official said could take at least four years to complete, follow India’s effort to begin trading power with Middle Eastern countries such as the United Arab Emirates.

After taking a suo motu cognisance of the incident immediately after the video surfaced, the Manipur Police swung to action and made the first arrest this morning.

“A thorough investigation is currently underway and we will ensure strict action is taken against all the perpetrators, including considering the possibility of capital punishment. Let it be known, there is absolutely no place for such heinous acts in our society,” the Manipur chief minister tweeted. Tension mounted in the hills of Manipur after a May 4 video surfaced

on Wednesday showing two women from one of the warring communities being paraded naked by a few men from the other side.

The video was doing the rounds on the eve of a planned protest march announced by the Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum (ITLF) on Thursday to highlight their plight.

Police said a case of abduction, gang rape and murder has been registered at Nongpok Sekmai police station in Thoubal district against unknown armed miscreants.

5 Indian Americans Get Key Admin, Board Positions in Virginia

Zofeen Maqsood

Five Indian Americans have been given key administration and board appointments in Virginia.

Dr Bimaljit Singh Sandhu, a gastroenterologist at Richmond Gastroenterology Associates, took oath as a board member of the Virginia Commonwealth University Health System Authority. Harshad Barot, owner of Galaxy Corporation and Kamlesh Dave, President, Heart Care Associates, were named to the Virginia Asian Advisory Board. Kunal Kumar, President of Pooja Group, Padmanabhan Seshaiyer, Professor and Director of George Mason University, were named to the Virginia Board of Workforce Development.

The sources, who also include four power ministry officials, declined to be identified as the previously unreported plan has not been made public. The union power ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government has been trying to promote closer political and economic ties with its neighbours, pushing back against China’s growing regional influence.

Reached Out 3 Times, No Response From Manipur Authorities: Women’s Panel

New Delhi: National Commission for Women (NCW) Chairperson Rekha Sharma today said she had reached out thrice in the last three months to authorities in Manipur over incidents of violence against women but no response was received from them.

She was responding to reports in a section of the media that claimed the commission had on June 12 received a complaint about the incident of two women being paraded naked on May 4 in the ethnic violence-hit northeastern state but had not taken any action. The May 4 video surfaced online on July 19.

Ms Sharma denied receiving any report of the incident and said she took suo motu cognisance of the incident on Friday after the video surfaced and sought explanation from authorities on the matter.

Documentary on Ravish Kumar Premiers in NYC

“While we Watched,” based on eminent Indian journalist Ravish Kumar. The highlight of the screenings also includes a post-show talk with the filmmaker and the subject of the documentaries.

Robert M. Califf, Chair of the Energy and Commerce Committee Cathy McMorris-Rodgers said the FDA’s recent decision to address shortages of critical drugs by allowing the temporary import of otherwise unapproved drugs from India and China makes having effective foreign inspection programs in those countries critical.

Chinese and Indian manufacturers receive the most FDA warning letters, McMorris-Rodgers said, adding that these violations have included carcinogens in medicines, destroying or falsifying of data, and non-sterile manufacturing processes.

Eating planet-friendly foods can boost longevity, cut death risk by 25%

New York: (IANS) Eating more planetfriendly foods could help you live a longer, healthier life as well as reduce the risk of death by about a quarter, according to new research that called for a more environmentally sustainable diet. The study builds upon prior research that identified foods that are a win-win for both health and the environment -such as whole grains, fruit, non-starchy vegetables, nuts, and unsaturated oils -- as well as foods that could be harmful to the environment and human health, like eggs and red and processed meats. The new findings suggest eating more planet-friendly foods can help reduce a person’s risk of death from causes such as cancer, heart disease, respiratory diseases, and neurodegenerative diseases and also reduce impacts to the environment in terms of factors like water use, land use, nutrient pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions. “We proposed a new diet score that incorporates the best current scientific evidence of food effects on both health and the environment,” said Linh Bui, doctoral candidate in the Department of

Low HIV Levels Pose Almost Zero Transmission Risk

New York:(IANS) People living with HIV who maintain low -- but still detectable -- levels of the virus and adhere to their antiretroviral regimen have almost zero risk of transmitting it to their sexual partners, according to a systematic review published in The Lancet. Findings indicate the risk of sexual transmission of HIV is almost zero at viral loads of less than 1,000 copies of the virus per millilitre of blood -- also commonly referred to as having a suppressed viral load.

“These findings are important as they indicate that it is extremely rare for people who maintain low levels of HIV to transmit it to their sexual partners. Crucially, this conclusion can promote the expansion of alternative viral load testing modalities that are more feasible in resource-limited settings,” said lead author Laura Broyles, from the Global Health Impact Group in Atlanta, US.

“Improving access to routine viral load testing could ultimately help people with HIV live healthier lives and reduce transmission of the virus,” she added. Taking daily medicine to treat HIV -- antiretroviral therapy, or ART -- lowers the amount of the virus in the body which preserves immune function and reduces morbidity and mortality associated with the virus and helps reduce HIV progression.

strategies to improve public health and address the climate crisis.

“As a millennial, I have always been concerned about mitigating human impacts on the environment,” said Bui. “A sustainable dietary pattern should not only be healthy but also consistent within planetary boundaries for greenhouse gas emissions and other environmental parameters.”

To create their Planetary Health Diet Index (PHDI), researchers reviewed existing research on the relationships between various food groups and health outcomes of over 100,000 participants in two large studies.

Nutrition at Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health. “The results confirmed our hypothesis that a higher Planetary Health Diet score was associated with a lower risk of mortality,” Bui added. With the new study, the researchers aimed to create a simple tool that policymakers and public health practitioners could use to develop

The data set included over 47,000 deaths during a follow-up period spanning over three decades from 1986-2018. Overall, they found that people in the highest quintile (the top one-fifth of participants) for PHDI had a 25 per cent lower risk of death from any cause compared to those in the lowest quintile. Higher PHDI scores were associated with a 15 per cent lower risk of death from cancer or cardiovascular diseases, a 20 per cent lower risk of death from neurodegenerative disease, and a 50 per cent lower risk of death from respiratory diseases. However, Bui cautioned that the PHDI does not necessarily reflect all food items and their relationships with all major diseases in all countries, as it may vary with specific health conditions, religious restrictions, or food accessibility.

Diabetes remission possible with controlled diet, exercise: Survey

Mumbai: (IANS) With cases of diabetes estimated to double from the current 10 crore to over 20 crore by 2045, strategies to manage the disease are being reviewed by health professionals.

In a new nationwide survey, it has been found that 71 per cent of doctors believe that Diabetes Remission (DR) -- bringing blood sugars back into the normal range without the aid of medications -- is possible.

The all-India survey among diabetologists was conducted by the digital healthcare company Practo in April to understand the attitudes of the medical community towards managing India’s rising diabetes burden.

The medicos also said that nearly 40 per cent of their patients were eligible for DR, but barely 52 per cent had access to a dietician, either in-house or externally, or a structured DR programme.

The rest are forced to single-handedly play many roles in a time-constrained environment, the survey found. The survey revealed several barriers to implementing DR in their patients -- difficulty in adhering to diet and fitness plans by the patient (86 per cent), lack of family support (43 per cent), and lacking resources to closely follow up on the patient’s progress (29 per cent).

Accordingly, a Practo spokesperson said that while the survey highlighted a growing predisposition towards DR among the healthcare professionals, it also brought to the fore a crucial gap in diabetes care delivery -- the need

for a structured support system to enable successful delivery of DR plans to the patients.

Those surveyed were of an average age of 44, with an HbA1c level of 8.4, and an average duration of diabetes of over six years.

From this, 88 per cent reduced or stopped medications over the sixmonth course, on an average the patients experienced a 1.7-point reduction in HcA1c levels (from 8.4 to 6.6) and a weight loss of 7.2 kg in the same period.

Medical Advisor of Practo Transform, Hema Venkataraman, said that diabetes in India is a unique and complex condition posing great challenges in its management.

“With as high as 20 per cent incidence in some cities, there is an urgent need for the rollout of widespread prevention and remission

programmes. The survey highlights that the country’s healthcare community recognises the importance of DR and also the unmet need for a support system to help them implement the DR,” Venkarataman said.

Consultant endocrinologist Anusha N.D. said that while diabetes can’t be reversed, it is definitely possible to put it into remission with weight loss, especially since its becoming common these days among youngsters with increased obesity.

“So, if one loses weight by stressing on diet and exercise, remission is possible, but it may not happen to all. However, weight loss definitely comes with a lot of other benefits, like, one can decrease the dose of diabetic and hypertensive medications and the lipid profile will be better,” said Anusha.
