Washington: Describing the Republican presidential candidates as "extremists", Vice President Kamala Harris has said that the participants at the party's maiden primary debate laid out an agenda that makes the country less fair, less free and less safe.
"No one on stage 'won' tonight's debate. Instead, the American people heard how much they stand to lose from an extremist agenda," Ms Harris, a Democrat, said on Wednesday after the two-hour-long Republican presidential primary debate in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
The Republican presidential debate included two Indian Americans Nikki Haley, 51, the former Governor of South Carolina, and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, 38.

Republican contenders clashed on stage at their first 2024 presidential debate, as they vied to displace the absent frontrunner Donald Trump. Eight rivals took to the stage in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to brawl over issues from Ukraine to abortion. While most were reluctant to attack Mr Trump, some of the hopefuls did take aim at the no-show former president. The eventual winner will challenge the Democratic candidate, probably President Joe Biden, in November 2024. On stage in the Fox News primetime showdown on Wednesday night were Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, biotech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, South Carolina Senator Tim Scott, former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley, former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, former VicePresident Mike Pence, former Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson and North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum.

These extremists focus on unnecessary debates meant to divide our nation in hopes that the American public will not notice they have no affirmative agenda," the 58-year-old Vice President claimed.
US President Joe Biden will travel to India from September 7 to 10 to attend the G-20 Leaders' Summit, the White House said on Tuesday. President Biden and G20 partners will discuss a range of joint efforts to tackle global issues, including on the clean energy transition and combatting climate change, mitigating the economic and social impacts of the Ukraine conflict, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said.
successful Chandrayaan-3 lunar South Pole landing!," he said.
Washington: American politicians, newspapers and space research institutions hailed India Wednesday on the successful moon landing of Chandrayaan-3 as the country entered the elite club of three other nations -- United States, Russia and China -- that have a rover on the lunar surface.
In the process, India became the first country among the elite group to have its rover on the moon's south pole region, which the Indian Space Research
Organisation believes could have traces of water. "Congratulations to India for the historic landing of Chandrayaan-3 on the southern polar region of the moon," US Vice President Kamala Harris said on X, known as Twitter till recently. "It is an incredible feat for all the scientists and engineers involved. We are proud to partner with you on this mission and space exploration more broadly," said Harris, whose mother was from India. The vice president heads the National Space Council. Space cooperation was one of the major topics of discussion during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's State visit to the US this summer. No country has ever landed on the treacherous south pole that scientists believe could hold important reserves of frozen water and precious elements. Russia's south polebound Luna-25 spacecraft crashed into the Moon on Sunday after spinning out of control. "Congratulations to ISRO and the people of India for the Chandrayaan3's historic landing on the South Pole of the Moon. We look forward to deepening our partnership with India on space exploration in the years ahead," US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said.
Rudy Giuliani, who was Donald Trump's personal lawyer, has surrendered at a jail in Atlanta, Georgia on charges of helping Mr Trump try to overturn his 2020 election loss in the state.
Mr Giuliani, who was released on a $150,000 (£118,000) bond, faces 13 charges including racketeering. The former New York mayor is one of 19 people, including Mr Trump, indicted in the election interference case.
Mr Trump has said he will attend jail to be booked on Thursday afternoon.
Tropical Storm Harold made landfall on the south-east coast of Texas on Tuesday, bringing more heavy rain and high winds to the southern US.
The storm has dumped up to 7in (17.7cm) of rain in some parts of the state. By late Tuesday afternoon, the storm had been downgraded to a tropical depression, but heavy rains continued. More than 23,000 people were without power in the Lone Star state on Tuesday night. The Texas deluge arrived a day after historic amounts of rain flooded parts of the south-western US.

The Kremlin has so far remained silent on last night's plane crash.
In last night’s main evening news bulletins on Russian TV, the crash of a plane reportedly carrying Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin received only the briefest of mentions.
The plane crash was breaking news on state-run Rossiya 1, which in a brief report said that 10 people were on board and all had perished.
In a similarly short account, state TV’s Channel One said that the executive jet was en route from Moscow to St Petersburg carrying a crew of three plus seven others. Emergency teams are at the scene, it said.
Both quoted Russia’s civil aviation authority, Rosaviatsia, as saying that Prigozhin’s name was on the passenger list, but neither report provided context
or comment.
Wagner has been dying a slow death over the last two months, and the reported death of its leader leaves the group with "limited options", according to an intelligence chief.
Justin Crump, CEO of the Sibylline intelligence consultancy and British army veteran, tells BBC Radio 4's Today programme that since Yevgeny Prigozhin's failed coup attempt, rumours
have been circulating over the future of the mercenary group.
A report from Ukraine's national resistance centre this morning cites Belarussian sources claiming that some Wagner forces are moving towards the border with Russia.
Responding to the report, Crump says: "There are many claims about what Wagner is or isn't doing, but I think reality is it has been dismembered over the last few months.
"The organisation has come under this deep level of scrutiny and a slow and steady operation to prevent it from having the level of power it clearly showed it had two months ago."
As the BBC's correspondent in Moscow Will Vernon says, Russia's President Vladimir Putin has so far remained tight-lipped on the reported death of Yevgeny Prigozhin.

The German government is presenting its new citizenship law this Wednesday (23.8.2023).
Legislation proposed and presented by Interior Minister Nancy Faeser will make dual citizenship easier as well as naturalization for non-EU citizens.
It is a reform that has been in the works since the center-left coalition of Social Democrats, Greens and the neoliberal Free Democrats took office in the fall of 2021.
The new citizenship plans boil down to three changes:
• Immigrants legally living in Germany will be allowed to apply for citizenship after five years, rather than the current eight; and if they have special achievements this can go down to only three years
Xi Jinping.
President Xi Jinping of China, travelling to Africa for the first time in five years, pledged greater cooperation with South Africa to enhance the voice of poor nations. He commended developing countries for “shaking off the yoke of colonialism”. And on Wednesday, he’s expected to hold talks with the leaders of the BRICS, a club of emerging nations, as he pushes for its expansion to serve as a counterweight to Western dominance.
China's central bank has cut one of its key interest rates for the second time in three months as the world's secondlargest economy struggles to bounce back from the pandemic.
The People's Bank of China (PBOC) lowered its one-year loan prime rate to 3.45% from 3.55%.
The country's post-Covid recovery has been hit by a property crisis, falling exports and weak consumer spending.
Jun Bei Liu from Tribeca Investment Partners told the BBC that the move is unlikely to have a major impact but does indicate the Chinese government's commitment to reviving the economy. "We will need bigger stimulus package to boost confidence and in turn drive up consumption and growth. Without it, the economy is risking faltering into deflation which will be harder to revive," she added.
Economists had also expected the bank to lower its five-year loan prime rate, which the country's mortgages are pegged to. However, it was unchanged at 4.2%.

New Delhi: The BRICS grouping will invite six nations to become full members, South Africa President Cyril Ramaphosa said this afternoon. These countries are Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Argentina, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia, and will join Brazil, Russia, China, India and South Africa, Mr Ramaphosa said, adding membership will take effect from January 1 next year.

Malka Leifer raped and indecently assaulted sisters Dassi Erlich and Elly Sapper between 2003 and 2007, a jury found in April.
The 56-year-old was found not guilty of abusing a third sister, Nicole Meyer.
Leifer's sentencing ends a 15-year push for the mother-of-eight to face justice. She had pleaded not guilty to more
than two dozen charges and spent years fighting extradition from Israel. But in 2021, an Israeli judge found she had faked mental illness to avoid facing the courts and ordered she be sent to Melbourne. During a lengthy trial, the jury heard evidence that Leifer had abused the sisters in locked classrooms, on school camps, and at the head teacher's home. Detailing the 18 charges on Thursday, judge Mark Gamble called her offending "insidious". Leifer was a revered figure at the Adass Israel School, awed almost like a rabbi, he said. And the sisters were starved of love and in need of protection - emotionally and physically abused at home by their mother and completely uneducated about sex.
"This case is striking for just how vulnerable these victims were, and for the calculating way in which the offender, Mrs Leifer, took callous advantage... for her own perverse sexual gratification," the judge said.
Tolyo: (IANS) Japan's decision to go forward with the release of the treated radioactively contaminated water is "not surprising, but certainly disappointing," a marine expert has said.
Despite public concerns and raging opposition from both home and abroad, the Japanese government announced Tuesday it has decided to start releasing nuclearcontaminated wastewater from the crippled Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant into the ocean on Thursday, Xinhua news agency reported. This decision violates the spirit of the UN Ocean Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) and the recently passed UN High Seas Treaty as well as the rights of indigenous Pacific communities, said Prof. Robert Richmond, director of the Kewalo Marine Laboratory at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said India is seen as a combination of openness, opportunities and options as the world sees optimism and confidence in the Indian economy.
In a video message at the G20 Trade and Investment Minister’s meeting here, the prime minister said that during the last nine years, India has become the fifth largest global economy and it has increased its competitiveness and enhanced transparency. “Today we see global optimism and confidence in the Indian economy. India is seen as a combination of openness, opportunities and options,” he said. India has expanded digitisation and promoted innovation and it has moved away from red tape to red carpet and liberalised FDI flows, he said.
New Delhi: The Chandrayaan-3 made its historic touchdown on the surface of the moon last evening, fulfilling the hopes of 1.4 billion people and putting India into the elite space club.
But as the country celebrates this huge milestone, the Vikram lander and Pragyan rover have a lot of work to do on the lunar surface. The rover has already rolled onto the lunar surface.
Sharing the update this morning, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) tweeted, “Chandrayaan-3 ROVER: Made in India Made for the MOON! The Ch-3 Rover ramped down from the Lander and India took a walk
on the moon.” !
ISRO chairman S Somanath told NDTV’s Pallava Bagla that both the lander and the rover are healthy and that Pragyan has rolled out of the Vikram lander. Images of the two may be released soon, he said. Over the next 14 days, the six-wheeled rover will carry out experiments on the surface of the moon. Both Vikram lander and Pragyan rover have a mission life of
1 lunar day, equal to 14 days on earth. The lander module is carrying five payloads for specific tasks on the Moon. The rover’s an Alpha Particle X-Ray Spectrometer will be used to derive the chemical composition and infer mineralogical composition to further enhance the understanding of the lunar surface.
Home advantage is one aspect that many feel should give Team India an edge over their opponents in the ODI World Cup beginning on October 5. However, it remains to be seen how far the 22-yard strips of the 10 venues go on to assist Rohit Sharma and Co. in the quadrennial showpiece. At a meeting in Mumbai on Wednesday, head curator of the International Cricket Council (ICC) Andy Atkinson has specifically told the curators of all the Cup venues – including those of the centres hosting the warm-up fixtures – that they should try and avoid being pressurised by the home team (India) into preparing pitches that suit them. Incidentally, in all the previous three editions of the 50over World Cup, the country that staged the competition went on to lift the trophy: India (co-hosts with Sri Lanka and Bangladesh) in 2011, Australia (co-hosts with New Zealand) in 2015 and England four years ago. This certainly reflects the significant role that home conditions can go on to play.

We are targeting to have it on September or in the first week of October,” said ISRO chief S Somnath. The successful landing of the Vikram lander has kicked up a lot of fine dust. The rover Pragyan was rolled out only after the dust had dispersed -- a process that takes a few hours. Unlike Earth, the dust will not settle in moon, given its lower gravitation.
The location has been chosen with care. The area, which yielded traces of water, is expected hold the key on lunar water ice, which could be a hugely valuable resource. That there is water on the moon’s surface was detected by a NASA instrument aboard the ISRO’s Chandrayaan-1 probe in 2009.

Chennai, Aug 23 (IANS) The Indian space agency is focused on landing its moon lander on Wednesday evening and is not looking at any postponement or Plan B, said a top official about the country’s third moon mission Chandrayaan-3. “The landing is confirmed on Wednesday evening as originally planned,” S. Somanath, Chairman, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) told IANS. Such a confident statement indicates that all the systems of the moon lander are in good health.
New Delhi: India is keeping its fingers crossed as moon mission Chandrayaan-3 is set to land on the lunar surface this evening. Parties and prayers are being held with equal fervour, with scientists predicting “20 minutes of terror” before the touchdown.
The landing - due at 6.04 pm - will be telecast live across the country. Schools will be open for the event and space enthusiasts are organising parties in anticipation of the historic moment. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is attending the BRICS summit in South Africa, will join in online.
Chandrayaan-3 Landing: India will be the fourth country to land a rover on moon after Russia, United States and China.
The suspense has been ratcheted up by the failure of Russian moon mission Luna-25, which crashed on the moon surface on Sunday during landing. In 2019, the Chandrayaan-2 mission had failed to land safely in the same area, which is full of craters and deep trenches. Space agency ISRO has expressed confidence that the landing will take place without a hitch, as the scientists have incorporated all the valuable lessons they learnt from Chandrayaan-2.
The live telecast of the event will begin at 5.20 pm by the ISRO website, YouTube channel and DD National. At 6.04 pm, the Vikram lander, carrying the rover Pragyaan, will attempt a soft landing on the moon’s South Pole. The location has been chosen with care.
Fawad Chaudhry, the ex-Minister of Information and Broadcasting in the Imran Khan government, has suggested that Pakistan’s media should broadcast the Chandrayaan-3 landing program. He also congratulated the Indian scientists and space community, calling the mission a “historic moment for humankind”.
Hours before India’s Chandrayaan-3 completes its Moon mission, Tesla chief and world’s richest man Elon Musk has reacted to it. Responding to a post on X (formerly Twitter) that says the cost of Chandrayaan-3 is less that the budget of Interstellar, Mr Musk said the mission is “good for India”. The post on X said the budget of India’s moon mission is $75 million, while makes of Interstellar - starring Matthew McConaughey - spent $165 million on the project. The Vikram lander on board Chandrayaan-3 will land on the lunar surface on Wednesday evening. After a dollar-to-rupee conversion, the cost of interstellar comes to around 1,200 crore.

one of them must be Indian. The ministry also said that board exams will be conducted twice a year, with students allowed to retain best score. New Delhi, Aug 23 (IANS) Wishing Indians ‘good luck’, Indian-American astronaut Sunita Williams has said she will cheer for India as Chandrayaan-3 mission’s lander module attempts a touchdown on the moon’s surface on Wednesday. “I am super excited for Chandrayaan-3 on the 23rd of August. Good luck, we are cheering for you,” the veteran NASA astronaut said in a video message shared by National Geographic India. Williams, who has spent about 322 days in space in her two shuttle missions, said that landing on the moon will provide valuable insights on lunar composition and history.

New Delhi, Aug 23 (IANS) During hearing on pleas pertaining to Article 370, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta on Wednesday submitted before the Constitution Bench that the Union government has absolutely no intention to interfere with the special provisions of the Constitution applicable to north-east states or any other part of the country.
“We must understand the difference between temporary provision, which is Article 370, and special provisions with regards to other states, including the north-east. The Central government has no intention to touch any part (of the Constitution) which gives special provisions to the North East
and other regions,” he said, in response to an intervention application filed in pleas challenging the stripping down of the special status granted to Jammu & Kashmir.
Advocate Manish Tewari, appearing for an intervenor- a former minister from Arunachal Pradesh, argued that
interpretation which will be given by the Constitution Bench on Article 370 would have impact on other special provisions like Article 371, the six subparts which apply to North East under Part XXI of the Constitution and the VI schedule which applies to Assam, Tripura, Meghalaya and Mizoram.
“The underlying principle of autonomy under Article 370 and Article 371 is more or less the same. So therefore, what your lordships will hold in this matter, either way, will have implications on Article 371,” he contended. He added: “Even a slight apprehension in the periphery of India can have serious implications. Your lordships are currently dealing with one such situation in Manipur.”

Store shelf monitoring solution is powered by state of art computer vision models and Wi-Fi-enabled IoT cameras to detect pre-determined defects in fruits and vegetables using the image of the crate, as an input. The solution detects the count of visible items of produce and identifies specific visual defects such as cuts, cracks, and pressure damage among others, the company said.

Tokyo: (IANS) The average retail gasoline price in Japan climbed to a new high in 15 years by rising for the 14th consecutive week, industry ministry data showed Wednesday. The national average price for regular gasoline as of Monday rose 1.8 yen from a week earlier to 183.70 yen per liter as of Monday, hitting its highest level since August 2008, according to
the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, Xinhua news agency reported. The hike came amid a weaker yen and the Japanese government's gradual downsizing of its subsidies to push down gasoline prices from June. Prices are expected to further increase and affect households if the government halts the subsidy program, designed to curb the impact of a surge in gasoline and other fuel prices, at the end of September as planned.
Prime Minister Fumio Kishida met with the ruling Liberal Democratic Party's policy chief Koichi Hagiuda on Tuesday, urging more measures to alleviate the impact of high fuel costs. The industry ministry, meanwhile, forecasts the price of regular gasoline to set a new record high next Monday, even while subsidies remain in place. (One U.S. dollar equals 145.79 Japanese yen)

The Google techie, identified as Devon, has shared his daily routine, in which he typically gets out of bed around 9 a.m., showers and cooks breakfast, and then works for Google until 11 a.m. or noon. He then works on his startup for the rest of the day, reports Insider. The news was first reported by Fortune.
He also stated that he couldn't justify working hard when he saw colleagues working late nights and not progressing up the corporate ladder.
Devon explained that he starts his week by writing code for "a decent part" of any given task before sending it off to his manager. This "basically guarantees" smooth sailing for the rest of the week. About 97 per cent of Google employees call the company a great place to work as compared to 57 per cent of workers of a typical US company, according to the report. Google is well-known for a variety of perks, including a quirky campus, free meals, and competitive pay. Devon had interned at Google and knew that if he got the job, he would not have to work very hard. Plus, he was not so much slacking off as he was carefully understating how quickly he worked. He further said that during his internship, he finished all of the code early on, allowing him to eke out a week-long trip to Hawaii.
"If I wanted to work long hours, I'd be at a startup. Most people choose Google because of the work-life balance and benefits. You could work at Apple, but Apple has such fan appeal to software engineers. They work long hours… but at Google, most people know what they're doing is a job," Devon was quoted as saying.
According to Devon, he is among the thousands of software engineers who, by their own admission, are paid to do nothing.

Actor Navneet Malik, who will be seen playing the negative lead in riveting thriller series 'The Freelancer’, has opened up about the challenges of Bollywood, and how he encountered rejections on his path to success.

New York, Aug 19 (IANS) A 44-year-old Indian-origin lab owner was sentenced o 27 years in prison for defrauding Medicare by submitting over $463 million in genetic and other laboratory tests that patients did not need.
According to court documents, Minal Patel’s Atlanta-based LabSolutions LLC was enrolled with Medicare and performed sophisticated genetic tests. Patel conspired with patient brokers, telemedicine companies, and call centers to target Medicare beneficiaries with telemarketing calls. The calls falsely stated that Medicare covered expensive cancer genetic tests, a Department of Justice release said.
After the Medicare beneficiaries agreed
to take a test, Patel paid kickbacks and bribes to patient brokers to obtain signed doctors’ orders authorising the tests from telemedicine companies. To conceal the kickbacks and bribes, Patel required patient brokers to sign sham contracts that falsely stated that the brokers were performing legitimate advertising services for LabSolutions. Patel knew that the brokers were deceptively marketing to Medicare beneficiaries and paying kickbacks and bribes to telemedicine companies for genetic testing prescriptions.
“In one of the largest genetic testing fraud cases ever tried to verdict, today’s sentence makes clear that the Department will seek justice for those who put profits above patient care, including owners and executives,” Acting Assistant Attorney General Nicole M, Argentieri of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division, said on Friday.

RENO, NV- Upset Hindus urge Incendiary Brewing Company to apologize and withdraw beer named after Hindu deity Kali, deeming it highly inappropriate. Distinguished
Hindu leader Rajan Zed criticized the use of sacred Hindu symbols for commercial purposes, stating it is hurtful to devotees. Zed, president of Universal Society of Hinduism, emphasized that Goddess Kali is revered and not meant for beer labels. He called the portrayal disrespectful and stated that breweries shouldn’t disrespect religious symbols. Hinduism, the world’s third-largest religion with 1.2 billion adherents, deserves respect. Zed noted that while artistic expression is valued, trivializing faith is insensitive. Goddess Kali embodies divine energy in Hinduism and has about three million followers in the USA. The beer, “Kali the Destroyer Mango Lassi IPA,” has sparked controversy. Incendiary Brewing Company, founded in 2018, faces calls for accountability.
FLORIDA- The office of Governor Ron DeSantis in Florida is reportedly exploring potential state measures to regulate remittances. An email was sent to Senator Ileana Garcia, discussing a provision for verifying the identity of those sending funds out of the country, though this provision was not in the actual legislation.
This discrepancy suggests internal consideration of remittance restrictions during the legislative session. This strategy could attract attention from Republican primary voters for DeSantis' presidential campaign. Notably, DeSantis
has previously advocated for a national tax on remittances by undocumented individuals. Remittances are vital for families abroad and economies in both the U.S. and recipient nations. Stricter ID
requirements might deter remittances and increase costs, particularly impacting Cuban-Americans sending money to Cuba. Experts warn this could push transactions towards less secure channels. DeSantis' broader immigration legislation, facing legal challenges, includes funding cuts to aid for undocumented individuals, invalidation of out-of-state licenses, mandatory immigration status collection by hospitals, and tougher penalties for employing undocumented workers. Observers speculate that immigration issues, possibly including remittances, might remain a focus in DeSantis' political strategy.
Harrisburg, PA - The Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) has unveiled an inventive resource allowing Pennsylvanians to achieve a high school equivalency (HSE) credential in a groundbreaking way. This novel approach permits individuals to combine scores from different high school equivalency tests, a previously unavailable option in the state. This HSE opportunity significantly improves employment prospects and higher education access, granting individuals the autonomy to shape their own life trajectories.
Dr. Khalid N. Mumin, Secretary of Education, lauds the new system's inclusivity for diverse students across ages, languages, and backgrounds. This strategy aligns with the administration's mission to enhance credential attainment across demographics, foster workforce expansion, and empower learners on their educational journeys. Powered by TotalTranscript® from DiplomaSender, this initiative enables students to merge subtests from two high school equivalency exams: the GED® test and the HiSET® exam. By combining Spanish and English subtests, students can also earn the Commonwealth Secondary School Diploma (CSSD), the state's high school equivalency credential.
Recent incidents of visa fraud involving students and professionals have attracted widespread attention, shedding light on the challenges faced by individuals seeking to study or work in the United States. Notably, the deportation of 21 Indian students has sparked concerns about visa processes and documentation.
Originating from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, these students appeared to have met all visa requirements, yet found themselves facing document verifications and detentions at major US airports, including Atlanta, Chicago, and San Francisco. Expressing astonishment, the students maintained they possessed valid visas and were ready to commence their academic journeys. However, inadequate communication regarding the reasons for their deportation led them to speculate about issues with visa documentation. Some even reported having their personal phones and

WhatsApp conversations scrutinized. Several students shared that they were gently advised to leave, with potential legal consequences if they contested the decision. Many had applied to universities in South Dakota and Missouri, indicating a commonality in their experiences.
After enduring the scrutiny, these distressed students described being
confined in cramped spaces with limited communication options. Additionally, they were warned about possible imprisonment. Recent reports by The Hindu revealed that these students now face a five-year ban on entering the US.
The repercussions of this deportation go beyond the immediate impact, encompassing wasted time, financial
strain, and compromised future opportunities. The half-decade ban imposed on those deemed inadmissible due to deportation carries significant weight.
Stricter US visa regulations during the COVID-19 pandemic, as highlighted by a Mint report, have made the situation more challenging for international students. With Indian and Chinese students constituting substantial portions of the international student body, numbering around 202,000 and 369,000 respectively, they are left with the difficult choice of returning home or facing potential deportation.
Consequently, these regulations discourage students from considering online education alternatives due to concerns over educational quality and financial implications. The incident underscores the urgent need for clarity and transparency in visa procedures to prevent further hardships for aspiring students.

demonstrates the Justice Department’s commitment to combatting healthcare fraud that exploits patients and drains

Between July 2016 and August 2019, LabSolutions submitted claims of over $463 million to Medicare, resulting in over $187 million in payments. Patel personally received more than $21 million from Medicare through the fraud. The FBI and the Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General (HHS-OIG) investigated the case. Designation of drug cartels as "unlawful enemy combatants," potentially paving the way for U.S. military intervention within Mexico's borders.
Expansion of border barriers, encompassing completion of the border wall in Texas despite President Biden's

Employment of outdated Alien and Sedition Acts for swift deportation of migrants, raising ethical and legal concerns.

Ruturaj Gaikwad feels leading a side is a complicated affair, but he will try to make it simple like his Chennai Super Kings skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni does. Gaikwad will captain an Indian side full of youngsters in the Hangzhou Asian Games with the main team busy with World Cup preparations. "Leadership role is a very complicated thing. What Mahibhai (Dhoni) always says is to take it one game at a time, don’t worry about the future.
Heath Streak has dismissed reports of his death, and informed that he is alive. The former Zimbabwe cricketer although is very 'upset and hurt' that news surrounding his demise spread like wildfire and has demanded the source to put out an apology. A veteran of 65 Tests and 189 ODIs, Streak, who is
undergoing treatment for cancer of the liver, was at his home when he and his family members were taken aback by what they heard and saw, and expressed surprise that information as delicate and serios as someone's death is being passed on without proper verification and authentication.
"It is a total rumour and a lie. I'm alive and well. I am very upset to learn that something as big as someone apparently passing can be spread unverified especially in our day and age of social media, I believe the source should apologise. I am hurt by the news," Streak, 49, told Mid-Day in his first official reaction to the news.
Rohit Sharma has harped on the importance of flexibility in the batting order and emphasised that the team will be adventurous about using their resources. "One thing I want in this team is to make sure everyone is okay to bat anywhere," Rohit said at a media conference in New Delhi on Monday. "That's one thing we need to keep in mind. You need flexibility, guys who can step up at any position. No one should say, 'I'm good at this position or I'm good at that position'. You want guys to be able to bat anywhere, that's the message conveyed to every individual. Not now, but over the last three-four years.
"I know it's tough for guys on the outside to understand why a guy who bats at six is batting at four, but the message has been given. You don't want to be handicapped or stuck with one player batting in one position.
"Having said that, you want to get the best out of players in certain positions. All seven-eight are open to anyone, that's the message we have sent out for so many years now," the Team India captain explained. Rohit was, however, quick to clarify that flexibility didn't necessarily mean being dynamic for the sake of it. "When I said flexibility is important, it's not like I'm implying sending the opener at No. 7 or opening the batting with Hardik Pandya.
"Shikhar and Rohit have only opened in the last seven-eight years, Kohli has batted only at three. Youngsters who come in at four-five, it's important for them to be flexible, batting up and down," Rohit said. "In the last four-five years if you look, the opener has opened, No. 3 has batted at three, KL has batted five, Hardik six, Jadeja seven. Four and five, sometimes if they move up and down, there's no problem. That much flexibility is important."

family. He completed high school from Chennai's Velammal Matriculation Higher Secondary School.

He has a sister, Vaishali, who is also a chess player. His father, Rameshbabu, works as a branch manager at TNSC Bank, and his mother, Nagalakshmi, is a homemaker.

Copenhagen Fashion Week got off to a rainy start, but the weather didn’t stop the Scandi fashion set from pulling out all of the stops on the front row. There were the puffy Cecilie Bahnsen dresses that you’d expect to see in the Danish capital, paired with sturdy footwear, as well as the bright, dopamine-inducing colours we’ve seen on showgoers in recent seasons in Denmark’s capital.

Nearly half of parents (43 per cent) have "no idea" how people raised their kids before the invention of smartphones, a new study has said. According to the study by OnePoll. com in collaboration with phone company Three UK, parents depend heavily on smartphones when it comes to raising their children. The study gathered data from 1,000 participants with children aged 6 and under.
About 61 per cent of respondents said that smartphones are the most helpful tool in parenting, while 77 per cent admitted to using their

phones up to 77 times per week to search for childcare advice.
The study also revealed that mothers and fathers regularly use smartphones to shop for their kids. “We know the important role phones play in people’s lives. As the research shows, this role becomes even more important after you’ve had a child -- your phone becomes a critical addition to your family,” said Aislinn O’Connor, Marketing Director at Three UK.
“Playing the role of entertainer, doctor, connector and much more in everyday life,” she added. Moreover, the study found that the widespread use of smartphones has resulted in an increase in data consumption. Due to increased phone usage, nearly 34 per cent of parents reported having to upgrade their data plans. Parents continue to exceed their monthly data limits by five gigabytes on average. The study found that in autopsy tissue, mitochondrial gene expression had recovered in the lungs, but mitochondrial function remained suppressed in the heart as well as the kidneys and liver.

Streaming and downloading content for children was identified as one of the most significant data drains, with an average of 12 hours per week dedicated to these activities, according to the study. Apart from entertainment, parents use their smartphones for a variety of purposes -- about 67 per cent of parents use their phones primarily to take photos, 62 per cent enjoy sending WhatsApp messages, and 60 per cent use their phones to check the weather forecast.
Global audio and video brand EPOS has launched findings examining the impact poor audio quality is having on the productivity levels of remote workers.
The research found that poor audio quality causes our brains to work harder to process information. It also found that the brain undergoes significant strain when struggling to process digital audio in comparison to sounds in a physical environment.
Following the onset of Covid-19, there has been an influx of research on the long-lasting cognitive issues related to the global health crisis as well as how lockdowns and other societal shifts have affected mental health. However, there has been little research on the impact of communicating primarily through digital solutions. Sound significantly impacts cognitive function because the ear is just a vehicle to the brain that perceives and translates a series of electronic nerve signals.
A team of researchers found that the genes of the mitochondria, the energy producers of the human body cells, can be negatively impacted by the coronavirus, leading to dysfunction in multiple organs beyond the lungs, a new study has shown.
Mitochondria are found in every cell in human bodies.
The genes responsible for generating mitochondria are dispersed across both the nuclear DNA located in the nucleus of our cells and the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) located within each mitochondrion, according to the study published in the journal Science Translational Medicine.
To understand how SARS-CoV-2 impacts mitochondria, researchers analysed a combination of nasopharyngeal and autopsy tissues from affected patients and animal models. “The tissue samples from human patients allowed us to look at how mitochondrial gene expression was affected at the onset and end of disease progression, while animal models
Even though no SARS-CoV-2 was found in the brain when researchers studied animal models and measured the time when the viral load was at its peak in the lungs, mitochondrial gene expression was suppressed in the cerebellum.
Taken together, these findings showed that host cells respond to initial infection in a way that involves the lungs, but that mitochondrial function in the lungs is restored over time, whereas mitochondrial function in other organs, particularly the heart, remains impaired.
“This study provides us with strong evidence that we need to stop looking at Covid-19 as strictly an upper respiratory disease and start viewing it as a systemic disorder that impacts multiple organs,” said co-senior author Douglas C. Wallace, PhD.
“The continued dysfunction we observed in organs other than the lungs suggests that mitochondrial dysfunction could be causing long-term damage to the internal organs of these patients,” he added.
It has long been touted that 10,000 steps a day is the magic number you need to stay fit and healthy - but a new study shows fewer than 5,000 may be enough to see a benefit.
The analysis of more than 226,000 people around the world showed 4,000 was enough to start reducing the risk of dying prematurely of any cause. Just over 2,300 is enough to benefit the heart and blood vessels.
The more you do, the more health benefits are seen, researchers said. Every extra 1,000 steps beyond the 4,000 reduced the risk of dying early by 15% up to 20,000 steps.
The team from the Medical University of Lodz in Poland and Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in the US found the walking benefits applied to all genders and ages, regardless of where they lived.
However, the biggest benefits were seen among the under-60s.

New Delhi: The Reserve Bank on Friday asked banks and other lenders to provide individual borrowers an option of switching over to a fixed rate at the time of reset of interest rates.
In a notification, it said in respect of EMI-based floating rate personal loans, in the wake of rising interest rates, several consumer grievances related to elongation of loan tenor and/or increase in EMI amount, without proper communication with and/or consent of borrowers have been received. In order to address these concerns, RBI asked entities regulated by it to put in place an appropriate policy framework. “At the time of sanction, REs shall clearly communicate to the borrowers about the possible impact of change in benchmark interest rate on the loan leading to changes in EMI and/or tenor or both. Subsequently, any increase in the EMI/ tenor or both on account of the above shall be communicated to the borrower immediately through appropriate channels,” RBI said.
As per the details available on the website of the apex court, the matter is likely to be taken up on next Friday, August 25. The central probe agency mentioned the matter before Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud and sought urgent listing of the pleas seeking the cancellation of the former legislator’s bail.

The Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft’s landerrover unit separated from its propulsion module on Thursday, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) said, as it prepared for the lander module to move a bit closer to the moon on Friday.
“The lander module successfully separated from the propulsion module,” the space agency announced on X
The separation occurred while the spacecraft was in an intended 153km by 163km orbit around the moon. The propulsion module, which is expected to continue orbiting the moon, carries an instrument named SHAPE (spectropolarimetry of habitable planet Earth) developed by scientists at ISRO’s UR Rao Satellite Centre in Bangalore. Scientists are hoping the study of light reflected by Earth using SHAPE will help in the search for habitable planets outside the solar system.
The deboosting is expected to move the lander module first into a 100km orbit and in the coming days into a 30km orbit, an ISRO official said.
