Republican debate candidates turn on one another in absence of frontrunner Trump
In a tumultuous presidential debate held in Simi Valley, California, Donald Trump's Republican rivals engaged in spirited exchanges, directing their criticism towards the absent former president, Democratic President Joe Biden, and each other. Contentious topics spanned China, immigration, and the economy.
However, as the debate concluded, none of the seven candidates on stage managed to secure a game-changing moment that could reshape the dynamics of a primary contest dominated by Trump for several months. Notably, Trump's four criminal indictments were scarcely mentioned during the two-hour broadcast.
Trump, who led his closest rival in the nomination race by a 37-point margin in the most recent Reuters/Ipsos poll, chose to skip the debate, just as he did last month's event in Wisconsin.
Judge leaves Trump asset sales up in the air after fraud ruling
NEW YORK, : - The New York judge who found Donald Trump liable for fraud on Wednesday stopped short of addressing whether his scathing decision would force the former U.S. president to sell his prized real estate. Justice Arthur Engoron at a hearing on Wednesday was asked by Trump's lawyer Christopher Kise about what he intended a day earlier by ordering the cancellation of business certificates that let some of Trump's businesses operate. Engoron's ruling could force Trump to give up control to a receiver of properties including Manhattan's Trump Tower, golf courses and his family estate in a Manhattan suburb.
The judge appointed an independent monitor for the Trump Organization last year.

Travis King in US custody after North Korea expulsion
US soldier Travis King, who fled from South to North Korea in July, is in American custody after being expelled by Pyongyang, officials say.
Pvt King was transferred into US custody in China before being flown to a US military installation. The 23-year-old reconnaissance specialist illegally crossed into North Korea in July.
North Korean media said he had fled because of "inhuman treatment" and racism within the US military. A senior administration official said on Wednesday that after months of "intense diplomacy" Pvt King had been returned to US hands and had spoken to his family.
"We can confirm Pvt King is very happy to be on his way home, and he is very much looking forward to reuniting with his family," the official said.

(Reuters) - The second-largest lottery winner in U.S. history has come forward to claim the $1.6 billion prize, but the person's identity may remain a secret for another 90 days, the Florida Lottery said on Wednesday.

Masked looters attack Apple Store in US, steal iPhone 15 devices
Washington: The United States said Wednesday it will start letting Israelis visit without visas, granting a longstanding wish of its ally after concluding it had reduced discrimination against Arab Americans -- an assessment rejected by some lawmakers and activists. By the end of November, Israelis will be in the same league as citizens of most Western nations by not needing visas for trips of 90 days or less to the world's largest economy.

San Francisco: (IANS) A number of masked people barged into an Apple store in US's Philadelphia, and fled with the latest products, including iPhone 15 devices, iPads, and others. Videos of the incident, which have gone viral, show police officers attempting to apprehend looters dressed in Halloween masks as they ransack the stores.
According to the Daily Mail, the Apple Store was attacked around 8 p.m. on
Tuesday, and police chased looters while recovering dropped iPhones and a "pile of iPads" at one location. Footage showed Apple devices ripped from display stands amid the looting. The masked looters, which were over a hundred in number, also attacked other stores before the police showed up, the report said. About 20 arrests have been made so far, the police said.
According to the report, one of the looters, a woman, even livestreamed the chaos. The woman, identified as Dayjia Blackwell, was posting footage of the looting on Instagram. Police later arrested her as well.
Several other videos on social media showed masked individuals running out of a Lululemon store, while police officers tackled them to the ground.
Washington: Violent crime is on the rise in the US capital, where a 28 per cent uptick in homicides this year has left researchers perplexed and politicians pointing fingers. And while Washington is still a far cry from its days as the "murder capital" of the United States, amid the 1990s crack epidemic, the rise in violent crime in the city is both causing consternation among residents and dividing them. Some of the killings have been especially grim: a 10-year-old girl who died from a stray bullet on Mother's Day; an Afghan immigrant who, having fled his country after the Taliban took over, was shot to death while working a late shift as a Lyft driver. Puzzling researchers is the fact that Washington's murder rate has jumped while other major metros in the United States have seen declines. Also, the number of armed carjackings in the city has more than doubled, according to police statistics. "DC is something of an outlier with respect to homicide trends," when compared to cities like New York, Philadelphia, Chicago or Baltimore, says Richard Rosenfeld, a criminologist at the University of Missouri-St. Louis.

The powerful Army, which has ruled coup-prone Pakistan for more than half of its 75-plus years of existence, has hitherto wielded considerable power in matters of security and foreign policy
Underscoring the inevitable role of the army in Pakistan, caretaker Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar has admitted that the country’s military will continue its hold in politics unless civic delivery institutions are strengthened in the coup-prone country.
The powerful Army, which has ruled coup-prone Pakistan for more than half of its 75-plus years of existence, has hitherto wielded considerable power in matters of security and foreign policy.
Kakar was speaking during an interview with the news channel TRT World, a Turkish public broadcaster, on Tuesday, when he spoke about the Pakistani military’s major role in politics.
“Pragmatically, realistically and honestly
... affirmative, yes,” was his answer when the interviewer asked if the disciplined military would continue to stay for a foreseeable future in Pakistan’s polity. Kakar was replying to a question about the “undue influence, whether suspected or real, of the military establishment of Pakistan” and its role.
He was asked: Can Pakistan work as a democracy when most Pakistanis believe their leadership is beholden to the almost nefarious relationship with the military?
“As far as the civil-military relationship and its imbalance is concerned, I personally view it as a pure government structure. Pakistani politicians, all the political leadership, have had a marital alliance with this military institution for their own specific interests,” the caretaker prime minister said.

He also urged respect for territorial integrity and non-interference in the internal affairs of all nations, hinting at China and Canada’s actions. 2 Indian-origin Cisco engineers join lawsuit alleging violation of Hindu rights
Two Indian-American Cisco engineers, previously sued for caste discrimination in California, have joined a lawsuit filed by the Hindu American Foundation (HAF), alleging that the state’s CRD violated the constitutional rights of Hindus and Indian-Americans. The caste discrimination case against Sundar Iyer and Ramana Kompella was voluntarily dismissed by CRD in April this year. The amended complaint by HAF accuses CRD of wrongly asserting that caste-based discrimination is integral to Hindu teachings, and it now includes additional plaintiffs who claim direct harm by CRD’s unconstitutional statements about Hinduism and Indians.

Several Detained, Weapons, Ammo Seized In Anti-Terror Raids At 51
Places
In a significant development, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has detained several individuals in a multi-state operation targeting the nexus between criminal syndicates in India and Khalistani separatists and terrorists based in countries like Pakistan and Canada. These syndicates have been allegedly used for facilitating terror-related activities. The raids, which spanned over 50 locations in states including Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and the national capital region, aimed to build a robust case against these syndicates, most of which are now believed to be operated from Dubai. The operation also focused on links with Canada-based criminals, including Arshdeep Dalla, connected to the Pakistan-based terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba.
The NIA has uncovered a significant cache of arms, ammunition, and digital evidence during these raids. The fugitives, such as Dalla and Gaurav Patial, allegedly based abroad, are accused of maintaining ties with
Khalistani terrorists to secure funding, smuggle weapons, and coordinate anti-national activities. The recent diplomatic row between India and Canada, sparked by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's claims of Indian involvement in the killing of a Canadian citizen Khalistani terrorist, Hardeep Singh Nijjar, adds further complexity to the situation. India has vehemently denied the allegations and called for evidence sharing. Foreign Minister S Jaishankar highlighted a rise in organized crime related to secessionist forces and extremism in Canada. These developments come amidst global concerns about terrorism and its nexus with transnational criminal networks.
His programme includes discussions with his counterpart Antony Blinken, senior members of the US administration, US business leaders and think tanks.
"We are deeply concerned by the allegations referenced by (Canadian) prime minister (Justin) Trudeau. We remain in close contact with our Canadian partners," US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller had told reporters at his daily news conference on Tuesday.

As per ABC6, she was supposed to have checked out of her hotel room two days prior. It's not known why hotel staffers didn't enter the room sooner after the woman failed to check out. In June this year, another senior flight attendant died after she collapsed during a flight from Venice to Philadelphia.
More than 40 per cent of elderly in India in poorest wealth quintile: UN report
A new UN report reveals concerning levels of poverty among India's elderly population, with over 40% residing in the poorest wealth quintile, and approximately 18.7% living without any income. This stark economic disparity may significantly impact their quality of life and access to healthcare, according to the UNFPA's India Ageing Report 2023.
The report highlights regional variations, with states like Jammu and Kashmir
and Punjab having lower percentages (4.2% and 5%, respectively) of elderly
individuals in the poorest quintile, while Lakshadweep and Chhattisgarh report distressingly high rates (40.2% and 47%, respectively).
Moreover, the study identifies a gender disparity in life expectancy, showing that women tend to outlive men, with some states like Himachal Pradesh and Kerala witnessing a four-year gap between the life expectancies of women and men at the age of 60.
The report underscores the unique challenges faced by elderly widowed
women, who often lack income, assets, and support, emphasizing the need for gender-sensitive policies to address these disparities.
Despite the growing elderly population, corporate social responsibility (CSR) spending on senior citizens' welfare remains minimal, comprising less than 0.3% of total CSR spending. This report calls for comprehensive policies and programs to support India's aging population and address the associated economic and gender disparities.
Trudeau's survival as PM depends on ardent Khalistan supporter
Prominent Sikh politicians in Canada have been vocal on various issues concerning India, including the 2020 farmers' protests and the recent diplomatic tensions. However, they have been notably silent on instances of anti-India graffiti on Hindu temples, threats against Indian diplomats, and praise for the perpetrators of the 1985 Air India bombing. This silence can be attributed to the significant influence that Khalistani extremists reportedly wield within Canadian political parties. They are known to engage in radical activism, placing supporters in political roles, and even getting them elected as MPs, MLAs, and Cabinet Ministers.

This situation underscores the need for careful diplomacy between the two nations, as they navigate the complexities of domestic politics and international relations.
Death of Indian-origin man in UK hospital to face coroner's office enquiry
The coroner's office is launching an investigation into the death of a 30-yearold Indian-origin man, Balram Patel, who passed away last month in a prominent UK hospital. Balram's father, Jay Patel, claims that his son's life could have been saved if they had been granted the right to seek a second medical opinion, known as Martha's rule in the UK.
Jay Patel alleges that Balram received inappropriate treatment and was denied the opportunity for a second opinion from senior medical professionals.
Balram's lungs eventually became fatally flooded, leading to his death at St Thomas' Hospital in London on August 9. The hospital initially cited pulmonary edema as the cause of death after Jay's intervention with the coroner's office. Balram, who had multiple disabilities and developmental delays, was initially treated with oral diuretics, which proved ineffective. Despite attempts to find a bariatric surgeon to administer intravenous diuretics at home, this option was never pursued. The family's request for a second opinion was denied, and Balram's condition worsened after his discharge, leading to his tragic passing. The UK's Health Secretary, Steve Barclay, has expressed commitment to implementing Martha's rule in hospitals, granting patients and their families the right to seek a second opinion in cases where concerns are raised about medical treatment.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) has refuted claims of a delay in their response to the fatal shooting of Khalistan leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Contrary to a Washington Post report suggesting a 12 to 20-minute response time, the RCMP's Surrey division clarified that officers reached the scene within four minutes of the incident in Surrey on June 18. They also denied any conflict between Surrey Police and the RCMP over the investigation's leadership. The RCMP stated that there was no delay in their response or subsequent investigative steps and expressed confidence in holding those responsible accountable. Increased patrols around gurdwaras and temples have been initiated for community safety.

Canada has accused India of being involved in the killing of Sikh separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia. India has termed the allegations “baseless” and said Canada has become a safe haven for terrorists. “We are obviously quite concerned about the situation in Canada. We have cooperated closely with our Canadian counterparts, and we have urged India to cooperate in that investigation and we’ll continue to do so,” Miller said.

Speaking at an event to mark the completion of 20 years of the Vibrant Gujarat Summit, Modi said they sowed small seeds of a “Vibrant Gujarat” 20 years ago, and today it has developed
into a big tree. “We organised Vibrant Gujarat to make the state a growth engine of India. After 2014, our aim has been to make India a global growth engine,” he said addressing a gathering of industrialists and businessmen.
“We are standing at such a phase that India will soon emerge as a global economic powerhouse,” he said.
“It is my guarantee to you that in a few years from now, in front of your eyes, India will be among the top three economies of the world,” the PM said.

Arundathi Hospital In Hyderabad Offers Free Treatment To Everyone : Marri Rajashekhar Reddy
HiIndia NewsdeskIn an era where hospitals are often associated with exorbitant fees, it may appear strange that a multi-specialty hospital on the outskirts of Hyderabad is operating without a billing counter. Costly diagnosis and complex operations are done free of cost for anyone walking into the Arundhati Institute of Medical Sciences and Hospital in Dundigal. Even post-operative facilities are extended without any charge. This makes it a unique hospital where one can walk in and walk out after experiencing the best of medical facilities without spending a rupee.
The hospital is the result of a promise made by Marri Rajashekhar Reddy to his mother. “This is also an inspiration from the Gift A Smile Campaign of BRS working president and Municipal Administration Minister K.T. Rama Rao, who asked the party cadre to donate ambulances and create medical facilities wherever they could,” Mr. Reddy says. The hospital will be attached to the medical college he is establishing on the same premises for which he is awaiting permission from the National Medical Commission (NMC). Over the past three years, Mr. Reddy has spent over ₹1 crore every month to maintain the full-fledged 450-bed hospital. “Unlike other hospitals that medical colleges run, everything here is free,” he says, recalling how complex heart

Diagnostics like MRI, CT, ultrasonography, mammography, digital X-ray, EEG and EMG are all done without taking any money. “Hospitals attached to medical colleges offer these facilities at a discounted price, but here, it is all free,” Mr. Reddy says. The footfall is growing primarily due to the word-of-mouth publicity by the patients themselves. “It is interesting to see patients from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh too. Most of these are relatives of migrants from those States working in that area. Since everything is free, they prefer our hospital,” Mr. Reddy says, adding, “They are surprised by the corporate hospital facilities at no cost.

Hollywood writers agree to end five-month strike after studio deal
US regulators have sued Amazon, alleging that the internet giant is illegally maintaining monopoly power.
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) said Amazon uses "a set of interlocking anticompetitive and unfair strategies" to push up prices and stifle competition. Amazon said the lawsuit was "wrong on the facts and law, and we look forward to making that case in court".
It is the latest technology giant to be sued by US regulators. The FTC's boss, Lina Khan, has had Amazon in her
"With its missionary zeal for consumers, Amazon has marched toward monopoly," she said at the time. Since her surprise appointment as FTC Chair in 2021, this case has been widely expected - and viewed as a crucial test of her leadership. The dominance of a handful of powerful tech firms has led some US politicians to call for action that would promote more competition in online search, retail and social media. However, the FTC under Ms Khan has had little to show for its strong rhetoric against Big Tech. In February it lost its attempt to stop Meta from buying VR company Within. And in July it lost an attempt to block Microsoft from completing its deal to buy the maker of Call of Duty.

A separate dispute involves actors, who are also on strike.

European Commission Vice President Vera Jourova said that X, which is not a signatory to a European Union wide code of conduct to crack down on fake news on social media platforms and advertising companies, has the "largest ratio of mis/disinformation posts."
Jourova said at a press briefing about updates to 2022 code of conduct that Elon Musk was not "off the hook" because his company dropped out of the code of practice.
The code of conduct on disinformation is a set of regulatory standards to have companies like Google, TikTok, Microsoft and Meta do more to tackle

Khalistanis Threaten Hindus, Deface Temples in Canada: Sources
Video Footage Suggests Six Men, Two Getaway Cars in Washington Post Report
New Delhi: Emboldened by their “rising clout” in Canada, pro-Khalistani extremists (PKE) have started openly intimidating minority Hindus there and many instances of defacing of temples have been reported, people with direct knowledge of the matter said.
“The open threats by Khalistanis to the physical security of Indian missions and diplomats in Canada is a very serious development and challenges the obligation of Canada under the Vienna Convention,” a senior government officer who’s closely monitoring the situation said, requesting anonymity. It appears there are different scales for measuring human rights, the officer said. “Voices from Canada are very strong on even trivial issues in Punjab, while there has been a complete silence on intimidation, violence, drug trafficking and extortion by PKEs sitting in Canada, affecting both countries,” the officer added. All these issues were discussed in a high-level meeting of intelligence agencies today, people familiar with the matter said.

Two men wearing hoodies jump out of the white sedan and begin firing at Nijjar’s truck. About 50 shots are thought to have been fired by both men, of which 34 are said to have struck Nijjar. Meanwhile, the white car, driven by a third person, drives out of the parking lot, according to the footage. Witnesses have told police that one man was short (only around 5-feet tall) and bulky. The newspaper said the video footage (which it had reviewed) and witness accounts suggested a “larger and more organized operation than has previously been reported.” The video footage from the gurdwara’s security camera lasts for about 90 seconds. Unusually, several people who run businesses and live in near the gurdwara, say police have not been round to question them yet. Then two killers, meanwhile, ran out of the park where a second vehicle (described by some newspapers as a Toyota Camry) was waiting for them. Three men were sitting in the car waiting for the killers.

Javed Akhtar
set the record straight on 'Sholay', 'Zanjeer' origin stories
'Ayalaan' ' once in a lifetime experience' Rakul Preet Singh
Actress Rakul Preet Singh, who was recently seen in the Nikhil Mahajan-directorial 'I Love You', has spoken about her upcoming sci-fi film 'Ayalaan', which she went on to call a 'once in a lifetime experience'.
"You're reacting to a prop, you're reacting to nothing, and you have to do it convincingly. You must learn to stay on your mark and not deviate since they will use CGI to fill in the gaps around you. So that was a truly unique experience for me, and I thoroughly enjoyed it."
New Delhi : (IANS) Veteran screenwriter and lyricist Javed Akhtar has said that the iconic Bollywood film 'Sholay' was not based, as was rumoured, on the classic western 'Once Upon a Time in the West', which was directed by Sergio Leone.
"As I have said, we (Salim and Javed) were influenced by Sergio Leone. But 'Sholay' was not based on his epic film. Critics also said 'Zanjeer' was based on 'Dirty Harry'," Akhtar writes in the recently released book, 'Talking Life: Javed Akthar in Conversation with Nasreen Munni Kabir'. He points out that 'Dirty Harry' was released in December 1971 and 'Zanjeer' in May 1973. It would have been impossible for them in those pre-Google days to have written the screenplay (inspired by 'Dirty Harry'), and then have the film shot, edited and released in such little time.
"It is all rubbish. No film was a remake or based on any other film," Akhtar writes. He says the basic story of 'Zanjeer' was Salim Khan's brainchild. "Later we wrote the screenplay together. Yes, 'Dirty Harry' was remade in Hindi, though not by us -- Salim and Javed. It was called 'Khoon Khoon' and turned out to be a big flop," Akhtar recalls.
'Ayalaan', which is directed by Tamil filmmaker R. Ravi Kumar is a sci-fiextraterrestrial-comedy film which employs a great deal of VFX and high-quality CGI. While using CGI in Indian films is nothing new, having a movie with more than 4,500 CGI shots is a new one. Talking about the film, the actress said: "Oh, it was a once-in-alifetime experience. Because there is an extraterrestrial in the picture, and you know there isn't one when you're shooting, but you're assuming there is. You must shoot it in such a way that people believe the film has an actual alien."

Alia is heard saying: "Meri rakhi pahenta hai na tu. Tu mere protection main hai. Tujhe main kuch bhi nahi hone dungi. Kabhi bhi."
'Ayalaan' is creating quite a buzz, not just for its compelling storyline but also for the groundbreaking use of CGI. The story itself has a similar line to Rakesh Roshan's Bollywood film 'Koi Mil Gaya', which also saw an alien being trapped on earth.
The Tamil film also sees a similar plot only this time instead of a costume, much of the movie is shot on a green screen while featuring a lot of high-quality VFX, along with a different take as the alien does manage to go home, though this only brews more trouble.
Directed and written by R. Ravi Kumar, the movie stars Sivakarthikeyan, Rakul Preet Singh, Karunakaran, Sharad Kelkar, Yogi Babu, Isha Koppikar, Bhanupriya and Bala Saravanan.

They laughed ten years back and got connected with the characters of the film. Also I feel, we don't give the right credit to the comedy films. When you make somebody laugh, you give them the moments of thoughtlessness which meditation gives after years of practice. So, films that make people laugh are closer to them. The official said the move would help the government choke the flow of finances from India to Khalistani terrorists and prevent their sympathisers from visiting the country. Sikh separatist leader
US intelligence agencies offered their Canadian counterparts context that helped Canada conclude that India had been involved
American spy agencies provided information to Ottawa after the killing of a Sikh separatist leader in the Vancouver area, but Canada developed the most definitive intelligence that led it to accuse India of orchestrating the plot, according to Western-allied officials.
In the aftermath of the killing, US intelligence agencies offered their Canadian counterparts context that helped Canada conclude that India had been involved. Yet what appears to be the “smoking gun” — intercepted communications of Indian diplomats in Canada indicating involvement in the plot — was gathered by Canadian officials, the allied officials said.
Blinken Expresses Concern Over Trudeau’s Allegations Against India
Canada PM’s Fresh Charge Deepens Diplomatic Row With India
New Delhi: Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau today doubled down on his explosive charge that “Indian government agents” were behind Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar’s killing, claiming such “credible allegations” were shared with India weeks ago.
The US is “deeply concerned” about the allegations raised by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau against India on the killing of a Khalistani separatist in Canada, Secretary of State Antony Blinken has said and Washington was “closely coordinating” with Ottawa on the issue and wants to see “accountability” in the case. Speaking at a press conference here on Friday, Blinken said the US has engaged directly with the Indian government on the issue and the most productive thing would be the completion of this investigation.
Former Pentagon Official on US Preference: India or Canada?
Canada has shared the credible allegations that I talked about on Monday with India. We did that many weeks ago. We are there to work constructively with India. We hope that they engage with us so that we can get to the bottom of this very serious matter,” Trudeau told a news conference on Saturday.
Trudeau had first linked Nijjar’s killing to India on Monday, prompting a quick and stern denial by India.

Washington: Stating that Justin Trudeau’s allegations have led to “greater danger” for Canada than India, former Pentagon official Michael Rubin said that if the United States has to choose between Ottawa and New Delhi, it will surely choose the latter as the relationship is “too important”. He said that India is far more important strategically than Canada is and Ottawa picking up a fight with India is like “an ant picking up a fight against an elephant”. While referring to the poor approval ratings of Justin Trudeau, Mr Rubin added that he is not long for the premiership, and the US can rebuild the relationship after he is gone.

Films Like ‘Singham’ Send “Very Harmful” Message, Says High Court Judge
Mumbai: The cinematic image of a “hero cop” delivering quick justice without bothering about the due process of law, as shown in blockbuster films
like “Singham”, sends out a very harmful message, Justice Gautam Patel of the Bombay High Court said here on Friday. Speaking at a function organised by the Indian Police Foundation to mark its annual day and Police Reforms Day, he also questioned people’s “impatience” with the process of law. Talking about police reforms, the judge said that the Supreme Court’s judgement in the Prakash Singh case was an “opportunity missed”, and also noted that the law enforcement machinery can not be reformed unless we reform ourselves.
Washington: Describing China as an “existential threat” to the US and the world, Indian-American Republican presidential aspirant Nikki Haley has claimed Beijing is “preparing for war”. China has spent half a century plotting to defeat America and in some respects, the Chinese military is already at par with the US armed forces, Ms Haley said in a major policy speech on the economy in the key early primary State of New Hampshire on Friday. Her speech comes two days after her India-American Republican rival Vivek Ramaswamy delivered a foreign policy speech on China in Ohio. Both Ms Haley and Mr Ramaswamy have emerged as popular GOP candidates after former US president Donald Trump. “Strength and pride are essential to our national survival, especially in the face of Communist China. China is an existential threat. It has spent half a century plotting to defeat us,” Haley said.
“World’s Worst Human Rights Records”: India’s Sharp Dig At Pakistan
New Delhi: India has reiterated that matters pertaining to Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh are “purely internal” and Pakistan cannot comment on its domestic matters.
The strong remarks came a day after Pakistan’s caretaker Prime Minister Anwarul Haq Kakar raised the Kashmir bogey at the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
“Pakistan has become a habitual offender when it comes to misusing this August forum to peddle baseless and malicious
propaganda against India,” Petal Gahlot, First Secretary for second committee of General Assembly, said on Saturday. It does so to deflect the world’s attention away from its own “abysmal record” on human rights, she added.
Pakistan must shut down its “infrastructure of terrorism” immediately, India said as it listed three steps for its neighbour to ensure peace in South Asia.

Two Indians Get 41 years in Prison for $1.2 Million Robocall Fraud
Zofeen MaqsoodAn international fraud scheme to cheat elderly victims across the US has been unearthed and two Indian nationals have been found guilty and have been sentenced to 41 months in prison. The sentences were imposed on Arushobike Mitra, and Garbita Mitra in Newark federal court.
As part of an international fraud scheme, India-based call centers utilized automated robocalls to victims across the country with the intent of defrauding US residents, particularly the elderly. After establishing contact with victims on these automated calls, members would force the victims to send large sums of cash. The cash was often asked to be sent via physical shipments or wire transfers to other members of the conspiracy. The conspirators would impersonate government officials from agencies such as the Social Security Administration, or they would resort to impersonating law enforcement officers from the FBI or DEA. The criminals then threatened victims with consequences if they did not comply. Arushobike Mitra and Garbita Mitra apart from jail terms have also been asked to three years of supervised release and to pay $835,324 in restitution.

As an increase in patients hospitalized with Covid-19 across the country is being reported, the return of free-at-home Covid-19 test kits was announced by the federal government. All individual households are eligible to request for a set of four rapid antigen tests that can be ordered online. Public health experts have stated that even though several new variants of Covid-19 are reported to be circulating, the effectiveness of the current tests to detect the virus will continue.
The free-at-home test distribution program was halted last summer when the Covid-19 rates had significantly dropped down. According to the CDC, Illinois experienced a 7.3% increase in hospitalizations as of Sept. 9 as compared to the week before.
The White House announced last week that $600 million would be allocated for the at-home tests as well as grants to 12 U.S. companies to manufacture more.
Rapid antigen tests can be ordered online by going to covid.gov/tests or special.usps.com/testkits.

Biden Adviser Addresses IndiaCanada Dispute
India is the number one source of immigrants and foreign students to Canada, and the two countries have strong economic and investment ties. If Indians heed the message, Canada’s economy could suffer, Bloomberg reported. Visitors from the country are also a major source of tourism dollars and represent nearly a quarter of spending by non-residents. if this crisis becomes worse and the government decides to do something about them and direct them to other countries with very good universities – Australia, the U.K., the U.S. – that too could be an economic consequence of this crisis.

Police Commission Calls for Unpaid Leave Over Indian Student’s Death Comments
New Delhi: The government has sought the downsizing of Canada’s diplomatic presence in India amid a crisis that blew up over Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s charge that India got a Khalistani terrorist killed in their country. Justin Trudeau today repeated his charge that “Indian government agents” were involved in the June killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Canadian citizen who was a wanted terrorist in India. He said there are “credible reasons to believe” so, but did not give any evidence. India has angrily rejected the allegation and flagged “politically condoned hate
crimes and criminal violence” in Canada. The government said Canada has not shared any information regarding Nijjar’s killing. India also alleged “Canadian diplomatic interference” in its internal affairs and sought to reduce the number of Canadian diplomats working in the country. The foreign ministry said the Canadian diplomatic presence in India is larger than what India has and needs to be downsized. The government has suspended visa services in Canada citing “security threats” that are not allowing their officials to carry out visa functions. “You are aware of the security threats being faced by our High Commissions and Consulates in Canada... this has disrupted their normal functioning,” the foreign ministry said.
Trudeau: ‘Credible Reasons’ for Major India Charge
The US is in touch with Indians at high levels after Ottawa said Indian government agents had links to the murder of a Sikh separatist leader in Canada, and Washington is giving India no “special exemption” in the matter, US national security adviser Jake Sullivan said on Thursday. The United States has been seeking to strengthen its relationship with India. President Joe Biden hosted Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for a state visit at the White House earlier this year.

New York: Canada Prime Minister
Justin Trudeau on Thursday said his country stands by the international rules-based order and repeated his charge on India’s role in the killing of Khalistani leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar stating that there are “credible reasons”
to believe the same. Addressing a press conference at Canada’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York on Thursday, Justin Trudeau said, “As I said on Monday, there are credible reasons to believe that agents of the Goverment of India were involved in the killing of a Canadian on Canadian soil. That is ...there is something of utmost foundational importance in a country’s rule of law in a world where international rules-based order matters... we have rigorous and independent judges and robust processes..”
During the press conference, the Canadian Prime Minister took questions about Canada’s tensions with India, after both countries took a series of diplomatic steps against each other.
Women’s Quota Bill Clears Parliament In Historic Step Towards Becoming Law
BJP leader J.P. Nadda said if the bill was passed now, women would get the benefits in the 2029 Lok Sabha polls. “There is a demand for implementing it now. There are certain constitutional procedures. There are issues such as which constituencies the reservation will apply to and where it will not. Who will decide this? It will be decided by a quasi-judicial body through public hearings after the census. If the bill is passed today, women will be elected in 2029.” The Modi government has tied the proposed law to the much-delayed census and a delimitation exercise in 2026.

Fashion with a purpose!
Eco-friendly fashion implies making sustainable choices in a world driven by fast-paced trends and disposable clothing. But then the term "sustainable fashion" itself is an oxymoron
New Delhi: (IANSlife) As defined in Cambridge Dictionary, 'fashion' means a style that is popular at a particular time, and on the other hand, 'sustainable' means able to continue over a period of time. Despite this contradiction, the notion of being fashionable while embracing sustainability is not only possible but also increasingly essential in our modern society.
Impact on Environment
The fashion industry has long been associated with a significant ecological footprint. It's a leading contributor to pollution, water consumption, and greenhouse gas emissions. Following are some of the industry's most pressing issues:
Fast Fashion
The rise of fast fashion has led to an accelerated production cycle, where clothing is designed, produced, and discarded rapidly. This contributes to massive amounts of textile waste.
Resource Intensive
Traditional textile production relies heavily on water, energy, and chemicals. Huge amounts of electricity and heat are required for cloth and garments manufacturing. Most of the factories operate in areas that are largely dependent on coal for producing energy, causing huge gas emissions.
Pollution
Dyeing and finishing textiles release harmful chemicals into waterways, polluting ecosystems and endangering human health.
Waste
The fashion industry generates vast amounts of waste, from unsold inventory to discarded clothing, much of which ends up in landfills. Given these environmental challenges, the fashion industry is under increasing pressure to become eco-friendly and embrace sustainability.
Rise of Eco-friendly Fashion:
In recent years, eco-friendly fashion has gained traction as a response to the industry's environmental and ethical concerns. Eco-friendly and sustainable fashion focuses on minimizing harm to the environment and improving social conditions throughout the supply chain. Here are some of the key aspects:
Eco-friendly Materials
Sustainable fashion prioritizes the use of eco-friendly materials such as organic
cotton, hemp, Tencel, and recycled fibers. These materials are produced with lower environmental impact.
Ethical Production
By prioritising sustainability, brands engage and support the local communities and provide safe, healthy, and fair working conditions for the labor.
Transparency
Sustainable brands aim to be transparent about their supply chains, making it easier for consumers to trace the origin of their clothing.
Circular Fashion
It promotes the idea of reducing, reusing, and recycling or upcycling clothing. This includes repair services, resale platforms, and clothing rental services. Fortunately, consumers are also becoming more conscious of these issues and demanding green alternatives. By adopting some of the following ecofriendly practices, individuals can reduce their carbon footprint and make a positive difference.
Choose Sustainable Fabrics
Opt for clothing made from sustainable materials like organic cotton, hemp, bamboo, Tencel, or recycled fibers. These fabrics are produced with less environmental impact compared to conventional ones.
Support Sustainable Brands
There is an increasing trend of brands that prioritize sustainability. One should opt for them and support. Look for certifications like Fair Trade, GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard), or B Corp to ensure ethical and eco-friendly practices.
Quality Over Quantity
Invest in high-quality, timeless pieces that will last longer instead of fast fashion trends. Quality clothing often withstands wear and tear better, reducing the need for frequent replacements.
Minimise Washing
Overwashing clothes can wear them out faster and consume more water and energy. Only wash your clothes when necessary, and opt for cold water to save energy.
Educate Yourself
Stay informed about sustainable fashion trends and practices. Attend workshops, read books and articles, and follow influencers and brands that promote eco-friendly fashion.

Suppressing negative thoughts may be good for mental health
HiIndia NewsdeskLondon: (IANS) The commonly-held belief that attempting to suppress negative thoughts is bad for our mental health could be wrong, suggests a new study
Scientists at the University of Cambridge trained 120 volunteers across 16 countries to suppress thoughts about negative events that worried them, and found that not only did these become less vivid, but that the participants' mental health also improved.
"We're all familiar with the Freudian idea that if we suppress our feelings or thoughts, then these thoughts remain in our unconscious, influencing our behaviour and well-being perniciously," said Professor Michael Anderson from the varsity’s Medical Research Council (MRC) Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit. "The whole point of psychotherapy is to dredge up these thoughts so one can deal with them and rob them of their power. In more recent years, we've been told that suppressing thoughts is intrinsically ineffective and that it actually causes people to think the thought more -- it's the classic idea of 'Don't think about a pink elephant'," he said.
These ideas have become dogma in the clinical treatment realm, said Anderson, with national guidelines talking about thought avoidance as a major maladaptive coping behaviour to be eliminated and overcome in depression, anxiety, Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), for example.
Dr. Zulkayda Mamat, from Trinity College, Cambridge believed that inhibitory control was critical in overcoming trauma in experiences occurring to herself and many others she has encountered in life.
She had wanted to investigate whether this was an innate ability or something that was learnt and hence could be
US NIH rolls out clinical trial of HIV vaccine
New York: (IANS) The US’ NIHhas announced the launch of Phase 1 clinical trial of a preventive HIV vaccine. The novel vaccine, VIR1388, is known for its safety and ability to induce an HIV-specific immune response in people. VIR-1388 is designed to instruct the immune system to produce T cells that can recognise HIV and signal an immune response to prevent the virus from establishing chronic infection. “US NIH scientific advances continue to be vital to achieving our national goal of ending the HIV epidemic by 2030,” Assistant Secretary of Health, Rachel Levine, posted on X. “This HIV vaccine clinical trial is another step toward our bold goal,” she added. The vaccine will use a cytomegalovirus (CMV) vector, meaning a weakened version of CMV to deliver the HIV vaccine material to the immune system without causing disease in the study participants.
taught. "Because of the pandemic, we were seeing a need in the community to help people cope with surging anxiety. There was already a mental health crisis, a hidden epidemic of mental health problems, and this was getting worse. So with that backdrop, we decided to see if we could help people cope better," Dr. Mamat said.
In the study, published in Science Advances, each participant was asked to think of a number of scenarios that might plausibly occur in their lives over the next two years -- 20 negative "fears and worries" that they were afraid might happen, 20 positive "hopes and dreams," and 36 routine and mundane neutral events.
The fears had to be worries of current concern to them, that have repeatedly intruded in their thoughts. "It was very clear that those events that participants practised suppressing were less vivid, less emotionally anxiety-inducing, than the other events and that overall,
participants improved in terms of their mental health. But we saw the biggest effect among those participants who were given practice at suppressing fearful, rather than neutral, thoughts," Dr. Mamat said.
Suppressing thoughts even improved mental health among participants with likely post-traumatic stress disorder. Among participants with post-traumatic stress who suppressed negative thoughts, their negative mental health indices scores fell on average by 16 per cent (compared to a 5 per cent fall for similar participants suppressing neutral events), whereas positive mental health indices scores increased by almost 10 per cent. In general, people with worse mental health symptoms at the outset of the study improved more after suppression training, but only if they suppressed their fears. This finding directly contradicts the notion that suppression is a maladaptive coping process. "What we found runs counter to the accepted narrative," said Professor Anderson. "Although more work will be needed to confirm the findings, it seems like it is possible and could even be potentially beneficial to actively suppress our fearful thoughts."

The ministry on Thursday recommended that the entire population be vaccinated against the new subvariants, especially patients suffering from immunosuppression, Xinhua news agency reported.
The ministry noted that Israel sees a moderate increase in the number of hospitalized patients, most are mild cases. Meanwhile, there is also a small increase in the number of patients in serious condition and a marginal rise in mortality.
The new round of vaccinations will first start with people aged 12 and over and children who are at risk.

1 in 3 long Covid patients may face multiple organ damage: Lancet
HiIndia Newsdesk
London: (IANS) Nearly a third of patients showed abnormalities in multiple organs, particularly in the lungs, brain and kidneys, five months after Covid-19 infection, revealed a study looking at the longer-term impact of the infectious disease. The study, published in The Lancet Respiratory Medicine, based on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans showed that lung abnormalities were significantly the highest – almost 14-fold -- among patients discharged from hospital for Covid than in the control group.
The abnormal findings involving the brain and kidneys were three and two times higher respectively.
The extent of abnormalities on MRI was often influenced by the severity of the Covid infection the patients had experienced and their age, as well as comorbidities.
