Ukraine war: US gives 1.1 million rounds of ammunition seized from Iran to Kyiv

The US has sent roughly 1.1 million bullets seized from Iran last year to Ukraine, its military has said.

The US Central Command (Centcom), which oversees operations in the Middle East, says the rounds were confiscated from a ship bound for Yemen in December.

Ukraine's Western allies recently warned that their production lines were struggling to keep up with the rate at which Ukraine was using ammunition. Centcom says the Iranian rounds were transferred to Ukraine on Monday. It added the ammunition was 7.62mm calibre used in Soviet-era rifles and light machine-guns. While the number is significant, it represents a small percentage of the hundreds of millions of rounds already provided by allies to Ukraine. The US has already provided more than 200 million bullets and grenades.

Manhunt launched as five shot at Maryland university

The munitions were originally seized by US naval forces from a stateless ship named MARWAN 1 on 9 December, it said. The US government gained ownership of them in July through a process known as civil forfeiture, by which an asset can be seized if its owner is thought to be involved in criminal activity. In this case, the claim was brought against Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, a branch

of the Iranian armed forces tasked with preserving the country's government. In a statement, Centcom said the US was "committed to working with our allies and partners to counter the flow of Iranian lethal aid in the region by all lawful means".

Iran backs the Houthi rebels in Yemen's ongoing civil war, but arms transfers to the group are barred under a 2015 resolution by the UN Security Council.

X's Ad Revenue In US Fell Every Month Since Elon Musk's Takeover: Report

Ad revenue in August, the latest data available from Guideline, declined 60% year-over-year. X declined to comment on the data.

Police have launched a manhunt for a suspect accused of shooting five people at a university in Maryland on Tuesday, officials have said. Students at Morgan State University in Baltimore were gathered for homecoming festivities when gunfire erupted and scattered the crowd. Four men and one woman, aged 18 to 22, were injured. Police said the number of shooters remained unknown. There have been 531 mass shootings this year, Gun Violence Archive data shows. The shooting on Tuesday night at the historically black university disrupted the school's homecoming events, an important tradition at historically black colleges and typically one of the biggest events of the year.

Since Elon Musk's acquisition of the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, in October 2022, monthly US ad revenue has consistently plummeted by at least 55% year-over-year, according to third-party data shared with Reuters. This decline has raised concerns among advertisers due to the rapid changes introduced under Musk's ownership. In December 2022, US ad revenue saw the steepest decline, plummeting by 78% compared to the previous year, according to ad analytics firm Guideline. The most recent data available from August shows a 60% year-over-year decrease

in ad revenue. X has refrained from commenting on this data. Musk has attributed the revenue downturn to pressure from activists on advertisers. Last month, he specifically pointed to the Anti-Defamation League as a primary factor behind a 60% drop in U.S. ad revenue, though he did not specify the time frame. The ADL has refuted these allegations, expressing its readiness to advertise on the platform to promote its anti-hate message. X's CEO, Linda Yaccarino, has indicated that 1,500 brands returned to the platform in the past 12 weeks, with 90% of the top 100 advertisers coming back. She believes X could become profitable by early next year. Musk's vision for X includes transforming it into an "everything app," offering various services beyond social networking, such as peer-to-peer payments and increased video content.

Sam Bankman-Fried: FTX crypto empire 'built on lies' - prosecutors

Former crypto CEO Sam BankmanFried has appeared in a New York court to answer to charges that his bankrupted financial empire was "built on lies".

Prosecutors told the court on Wednesday that the former FTX boss stole billions from clients and investors to "commit fraud on a massive scale". His lawyers deny all charges, saying the

so-called "crypto king" is a "math nerd" who was acting in "good faith".

The blockbuster trial is expected to last about six weeks.

Mr Bankman-Fried rose to fame after

founding FTX in 2019, once one of the world's biggest cryptocurrency exchanges.

"It looked like Sam Bankman-Fried was on top of the world," lead prosecutor Thane Rehn told the packed Manhattan courtroom as the trial kicked off.

"All of it was built on lies."

Mr Bankman-Fried became a kind of crypto spokesman in Washington DC, known for his curly mop, sports sponsorships and for hobnobbing with celebrities.

The Legends of the Fall star is also seeking damages from Disney, Miramax and her former talent agency who she says failed to protect her from abuse. The case was filed in New York under a law that allows sex cases to be filed outside of the statute of limitations. Weinstein is currently serving a 23-year prison sentence for rape.

Hip-hop stars on the edge as IndiaCanada row deepens

Last month, popular Punjabi rapper Shubhneet Singh's forthcoming India tour was cancelled after tensions erupted between India and Canada. The reason was a controversy that broke out over an old social media post where he had shared an incorrect map of India. The Canada-based singer (known to fans as Shubh) was accused of supporting the demand for Khalistan, or a separate Sikh homeland - a sensitive topic in India, which saw a violent insurgency over the movement in the 1980s.

Police hunt suspect in murder of New York activist

Police are searching for an unidentified suspect in the murder of a social justice activist who was stabbed multiple times on a New York street while returning from a wedding. Ryan Carson, 32, was murdered near a bus station in Brooklyn's Crown Heights neighbourhood early on 2 October.

The suspect, who has not been named, was "acting agitated" before the unprovoked assault. Mayor Eric Adams vowed that police "won't rest" until an arrest is made.

Biden approves new section of border wall as Mexico crossings rise

US President Joe Biden's administration is to build a section of border wall in southern Texas in an effort to stop rising levels of immigration

US President Joe Biden's administration is to build a section of border wall in southern Texas in an effort to stop rising levels of immigration.

Around 20 miles (32km) will be build in Starr County along its border with Mexico, where officials report high numbers of crossings.

Mr Biden in 2020 promised there would be "not be another foot of wall constructed" if he was elected.

More than 245,000 crossings have been made this year, government data shows.

"There is presently an acute and immediate need to construct physical barriers and roads in the vicinity of the border of the United States in order to prevent unlawful entries," Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas said in an announcement.

Dozens of federal laws have been waived

in order to approve construction of the wall, including the Clean Air Act and Safe Drinking Water Act.

The move has angered environmentalists, who say the structures will cut through the habitats of endangered plants and animals.

"It's disheartening to see President Biden stoop to this level, casting aside our nation's bedrock environmental laws to build ineffective wildlife-killing border walls," said Laiken Jordahl, a conservation advocate at the Center for Biological Diversity.

According to a proposal by US Customs and Border Protection, the barriers will consist of large bollards embedded in a concrete base, as well as gates, cameras and CCTV equipment.

Homeland Security said it would use funding secured during Donald Trump's presidency to build the new

section.

It is the first time the Biden administration has used its powers to approve the construction of new walls - something that was done often during Mr Trump's time in office. Speaking to Fox News on Wednesday, Mr Trump blamed the president for halting construction and causing a crisis at the southern border.

Mr Biden has been facing increasing criticism over his immigration policies in the wake of a recent surge of migrants crossing into the US.

US Border Patrol apprehended 181,059 people along the southern border in August compared with 132,648 in July, according to the latest data.

Mexico's president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, said that 10,000 people arrived at the border every day last week alone.

China Plans To Double Size Of Its Space Station To Rival NASA

Indian-Americans have gained prominence in the United States, with many holding key positions in the Biden administration, according to Neera Tanden, Director of the United States Domestic Policy Council. Speaking at India House, she highlighted the community's growing influence, citing leaders like Arti Prabhakar in the Office of Science and Technology Policy and Vinay Reddy, who contributes to the President's speeches. Tanden praised the Indian-American community for broadening its contributions to the country and fostering strong democratic participation, which she believes strengthens the US-India relationship.

Other prominent figures at the event emphasized the importance of science, technology, and innovation in fostering robust democracies and furthering the US-India partnership. Nisha Desai Biswal, Deputy CEO of the US International Development Finance Corporation, emphasized the multifaceted nature of the relationship, involving peopleto-people connections, business collaborations, and more.

Beijing: China plans to expand its space station to six modules from three in coming years, offering astronauts from other nations an alternative platform for near-Earth missions as the NASA-led International Space Station (ISS) nears

the end of its lifespan. The operational lifetime of the Chinese space station will be more than 15 years, the China Academy of Space Technology (CAST), a unit of China's main space contractor, said at the 74th International Astronautical Congress in Baku, Azerbaijan, on Wednesday. That would be more than the 10 years previously announced. China's self-built space station, also known as Tiangong, or Celestial Palace in Chinese, has been fully operational since late 2022, hosting a maximum of three astronauts at an orbital altitude of up to 450 km (280 miles).

Biden's dog leaves White House after biting staff

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak aims to gradually raise the legal age for consuming cigarettes in a move that would introduce a ban for the next generation. The age would increase by one year annually so that "a 14-yearold today would never legally be

sold a cigarette," Sunak said at the Conservative Party conference in Manchester on Wednesday. The government also plans to restrict the availability of disposable vapes and will look at the packaging and flavors of those products. The proposal would have to be approved by the UK parliament, with Sunak saying it will be a free vote, asking politicians to make their decision as "a matter of conscience."

Sunak added that smoking puts pressure on the NHS, with costs of £17 billion ($20.7 billion) a year, and the move would help the UK toward its goal to become smoke-free by 2030.

The Biden family's dog, Commander, has been moved out of the White House after a series of biting incidents. It is still being decided what will happen to the two-year-old German Shepherd, a spokeswoman for First Lady Jill Biden said.

Hindu marriage not valid without 'saptapadi': Allahabad High Court

Prayagraj: (IANS) The Allahabad High Court has observed that a Hindu marriage is not valid without the 'saptapadi' ceremony (taking seven rounds around the sacred fire) and other rituals.

On this ground, the court has quashed the entire proceedings of a complaint case, where the husband had sought punishment for his estranged wife, alleging that she had solemnised her second marriage without obtaining a divorce from him.

Allowing a petition filed by Smriti Singh, Justice Sanjay Kumar Singh observed, "It is well settled that the word 'solemnise' means, in connection with a marriage, 'to celebrate the marriage with proper ceremonies and in due form'.

Unless the marriage is celebrated or performed with proper ceremonies and due form, it cannot be said to be 'solemnised'. If the marriage is not a valid marriage... it is not a marriage in the eyes of law. The 'saptapadi' ceremony

The court relied on Section 7 of the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955, which provides that a Hindu marriage may be solemnised in accordance with the customary rites and ceremonies of either party thereto. Second, such rites include 'saptapadi', which makes the marriage complete when the seventh step is taken.

British-Indian Home Secy slammed for ‘hurricane’ of migrants remarks

The 18th edition of Tasveer South Asian Film Festival (TSAFF) will be held across multiple venues in Seattle, WA. This year, TSAFF achieves a momentous milestone as the first and only South Asian film festival whose winning films will qualify for submission to the Oscars.

British-Indian Home Secretary Suella Braverman has faced criticism for her recent Conservative conference speech in which she warned against a "hurricane" of migrants arriving on the UK's shores. Braverman, whose parents were immigrants from Mauritius and Kenya, referred to mass migration as "one of the most powerful forces reshaping our world" and expressed concerns about uncontrolled migration

from poorer to richer countries. Liberal Democrat Home Affairs Spokesperson Alistair Carmichael criticized Braverman for divisive rhetoric and urged her to focus on addressing issues like the asylum backlog and unsolved crimes. Green Party MP Caroline Lucas also condemned her speech as "repulsive" and divisive. Braverman's remarks come amidst a significant number of people crossing the English Channel in small boats this year. She called for decisive action by the government to prevent uncontrolled migration. Business Secretary Kemi Badenoch, while defending the importance of discussing immigration policies carefully, emphasized that the UK is a multiracial society.Braverman has been a subject of controversy for her immigrationrelated comments since becoming Home Secretary, including her assertion that "multiculturalism has failed" and referring to the migrant situation as an "invasion."

Entrepreneur Vivek Wadhwa's New Company To Use Breath To Detect Cancer

Vivek Wadhwa, a prominent figure in Silicon Valley, has launched a new company called Vionix Biosciences Inc. Over the past five years, Wadhwa has been working on a project to detect cancer through breath analysis, similar to a breathalyzer. The goal is to create a less invasive method of collecting health information.

Wadhwa, 66, has invested approximately $500,000 of his own funds into the initiative and plans to spend an additional $500,000 from his retirement savings. The company aims to develop a working prototype by the end of 2024.

If successful, this technology could significantly improve cancer

screening and allow for earlier detection, particularly in underserved communities. However, challenges remain in perfecting breath measurement for medical diagnostics.

Wadhwa's motivation for this endeavor

stems from his wife's battle with cancer. After her diagnosis and subsequent treatment, he became dedicated to finding better ways to detect diseases. The ultimate vision for Vionix is to create a portable device that can conduct on-site tests for various diseases, including cancer, through breath analysis and other bodily fluids, using artificial intelligence to enhance accuracy.

Wadhwa emphasizes transparency and plans to involve external researchers to validate the technology, avoiding the pitfalls that befell companies like Theranos. His mission is driven by the desire to prevent others from experiencing the same challenges his wife faced.

This year's lineup unveils 83 selected films spanning diverse genres and captivating themes. The films are presented in 26 languages. Tasveer cofounder Rita Meher said: "As the only Oscar-qualifying South Asian festival, we are committed to presenting a program of unparalleled depth and significance. Our festival winners can directly compete in the Academy Awards run, allowing authentic South Asian narratives to shine on the grandest stage, unfiltered and unmediated.

Adani Group plans to build 10 GW solar manufacturing capacity by 2027

Billionaire Gautam Adani’s group is planning to build 10 GW of integrated solar manufacturing capacity by 2027, as it looks to capture the energy transition business, sources close to the company said. The Adani group currently has a solar manufacturing capacity of 4 GW.

Adani Solar has a confirmed order book of over 3,000 MW in exports that are to be serviced over the next 15 months, they said, adding Adani, recently, raised $394 million for solar manufacturing from Barclays PLC and Deutsche Banks AG through a trade finance facility. While India scaled up its solar energy generation from 2.63 GW in March 2014 to 71.10 GW in July 2023, the manufacturing ecosystem did not match the pace.

To change, the government adopted a two-pronged strategy — used trade and non-trade barriers such as safeguard duty, an approved list of module manufacturers (ALMM), and a production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme. This gave Indian solar manufacturing the necessary impetus to encourage private players such as the Adani group to scale up investments in

Cost of UK national debt hits 20-year high

The interest the government pays on national debt has reached a 20-year high as the rate on 30-year bonds reaches 5.05%.

A rise in the cost of borrowing comes at a difficult time for the chancellor, Jeremy Hunt, as he prepares for the autumn statement on 22 November. Mr Hunt has already made clear that tax cuts will not be announced in November.

However, the increased cost of servicing the country's debt pile further narrows his choices.

The total amount the UK government owes is called the national debt and it is currently about £2.59 trillion. The current level of debt is more than double what was seen from the 1980s through to the financial crisis of 2008.

After the success of Adani Green Energy (AGEL) — the group’s listed renewable energy generation entity, Adani Enterprises (AEL) made strides

in lining up and incubating solar PV manufacturing with Adani Solar in 2015. Adani Solar commenced manufacturing in 2016, with a 1.2 GW cell and module manufacturing capacity.

Ukraine war: Burger King still open in Russia despite pledge to exit

Burger King remains open as usual in Russia despite the brand's owner pledging to leave more than a year ago. Restaurant Brands International (RBI), which owns 15% of the fastfood's franchise business in Russia, told the BBC it had "no new updates to share at this time" on its exit. The firm said in March 2022 that it had started the process to leave Russia.

Since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, Western companies have been under pressure to leave Russia. Critics accused RBI of "sustaining Putin's regime" by failing to ditch its stake in its Russian business.

Home buyers choosing smaller properties and 35-year mortgages

The US has announced sanctions on 25 China-based firms and individuals allegedly involved in the production of chemicals used to make fentanyl. Fentanyl, a potent opioid used as a painkiller or sedative, plays a major role in the ongoing US drug crisis. Attorney General Merrick Garland said the drug's supply chain "often starts with

China's embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Reuters news agency. In April, a spokesperson for the Chinese foreign ministry said there was "no such thing as illegal trafficking of fentanyl" between China and Mexico. This came after Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador called on the Chinese government to help stop the alleged flow of fentanyl and its precursors into his country. The US authorities blame Mexican drug gangs for supplying fentanyl to users across the US. Fentanyl can be legally prescribed by doctors, but a dramatic increase in opioid addiction in the US in recent decades has led to a rise in illegal production and overdoses.

now 2nd-biggest manufacturing hub for mobile phones globally

India

New Delhi: (IANS) India is now the second-biggest manufacturing hub for mobile phones due to heavy investment from original equipment manufacturers, original design manufacturers and companies dealing in components and parts, a new report showed on Tuesday. India is expected to export about 22 per cent of its total assembled mobile phones in 2023, according to Counterpoint Research.

However, China’s manufacturing and supply chain will still maintain its essential role in the longer run,” said senior research analyst Ivan Lam.

In a fillip to the ‘Make in India’ initiative, India saw mobile phones exports worth $5.5 billion in the April-August period in the ongoing fiscal year (FY24), government and industry data showed recently. As per the estimates by the Department of

Commerce and the India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA), the April-August period saw mobile phone exports worth $5.5 billion, against $3 billion (about Rs 25,000 crore) in the same period in FY22-23. India is set to cross Rs 1,20,000 crore in mobile phone exports in the current fiscal year, with Apple leading the market with more than 50 per cent in FY24.Meanwhile, according to the report, smartphone shipments from original design manufacturers (ODMs) and Independent Design Houses (ODMs/ IDHs) declined six per cent (year-on-year) in the first half this year, according to the report.

Some home buyers are considering smaller properties and longerterm mortgages as affordability is squeezed, according to two surveys. A quarter of mortgage holders aged under 30 who started their loan early this year chose a 35-year term, credit reference agency Experian said. That is an increase from 10% in January 2020, it said. It comes as Nationwide Building Society said average property values were 5.3% lower than a year ago. Property prices have been pushed down as buyers face mortgage rates higher than they might have hoped, or planned, for. The average UK house price of £257,808 in September was around £14,500 lower than in the same month a year earlier.

CBC news reported that to a question on whether Canada will ask India to remove diplomats, he said, “We’re not looking to escalate, as I’ve said, we’re going to be doing the work that matters in continuing to have constructive relations with India through this extremely difficult time.”

Washington: The Canadian allegations regarding India’s involvement in the killing of a pro-Khalistan leader are “serious” and need to be investigated fully, the White House has said.

Hardeep Singh Nijjar, the chief of the banned KTF, was killed in Surrey, British Columbia on June 18. India had designated Nijjar as a terrorist in 2020. The claims made by Canada were discussed when visiting External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan met here last week, John Kirby, Coordinator for Strategic Communications at the National Security Council in the White House told reporters at a news conference here.

India asks Canada to withdraw 40 diplomats by Oct 10: Reports

Bhubaneswar, Oct 03 (IANS) Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur said on Tuesday that the central investigation agencies are free to carry out action against anyone involved in illegal activities. “The investigative agencies probe if anyone does anything wrong. It is not written anywhere that the agencies can’t initiate any probe even if you have received money through illegal means which is objectionable. Investigative agencies are free and they take action as per the rules,” said Thakur answering a query on the raids on NewsClick and its journalists by the Special Cell of Delhi Police.

New Delhi, October 3 (IANS) India is learnt to have told Canada to withdraw around 40 diplomats from the country by October 10 amid worsening ties between the two nations, according to reports.

The reports have said that New Delhi has conveyed to Canada that if the diplomats are not withdrawn by the deadline, they will lose their diplomatic immunity.

There are more than 60 Canadian diplomats posted in India. Last month, after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had alleged

in Parliament that Indian intelligence agents may have been involved in the murder of Sikh pro-Khalistan hardliner Hardeep Singh Nijjar, the diplomatic relations have hit an all time low between the two nations. Following Trudeau’s allegations, both the countries had expelled a diplomat each. India had also termed Canada’s allegations as “politically driven”. On September 21, while replying to questions related to a possible reduction of Canadian diplomats stationed in India, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi had said: “Yes, we’ve informed the government of Canada that there should be parity in strength in our mutual diplomatic presence. Their number is very much higher than ours in Canada... I assume there will be a reduction from the Canadian side.”

“Doors Not Closed, But Need Something To Look At”: India On Canada’s Charges

Washington: India and the US have discussed the killing of a Khalistani terrorist that is at the core of the IndoCanada diplomatic crisis.

Foreign minister S Jaishankar told his US counterpart Antony Blinken that Canada harbours extremist elements.

Mr Jaishankar said Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s allegationthat “Indian government agents” were involved in Hardeep Singh Nijjar’s killing - was not consistent with India’s policy.

India had earlier rejected Trudeau’s charges as “absurd”.

Terrorists and extremists have been given operating space in Canada because of the compulsions of Canadian politics, said S Jaishankar.

have been given operating space in Canada because of the compulsions of Canadian politics,” he said.

Trudeau has offered no evidence to support his allegation against India, but reports said this was a shared information among an intelligence alliance also including US, UK, Australia and New Zealand. Rejecting the charge, India has accused Canada of providing safe haven to terrorists.

In an occasionally dark and profane speech, Donald Trump on Friday sought to win over Republicans in California by complaining that rich people in Beverly Hills smell bad because they’re denied water, reiterating lies about widespread election fraud and calling on police to shoot people robbing stores. While many of his remarks at the California Republican Party convention in Anaheim were familiar retreads of Trump’s attacks and grievances, his encouragement of violent retribution against criminals marked an escalation of his longstanding tough-on-crime message. “We will immediately stop all of the pillaging and theft. Very simply: If you rob a store, you can fully expect to be shot as you are leaving that store,” he said, drawing loud applause. “Shot!” he added for emphasis. Trump was one of several Republican presidential contenders appearing at the event in this Democratic stronghold. While there’s little hope for any of them to defeat President Joe Biden here in a general election, California will play a critical role in the slate of states voting on March 5 in the so-called Super Tuesday primaries.

A federal court ordered the owners of 14 Subway locations north of San Francisco to pay employees nearly USD 1 million in damages and back pay — and also to sell or shut their businesses, with any sale proceeds going to the Department of Labor.

Federal investigators said franchise owners John and Jessica Meza directed children as young as 14 to operate dangerous machinery, assigned minors work hours that violated federal law, and failed to pay their employees regularly,

including by issuing hundreds of bad checks and illegally keeping tips left by customers. The Labor Department also charged that the Mezas coerced employees in an attempt to prevent them from cooperating with its investigation, sometimes threatening children who attempted to raise concerns about the work environment.

According to the court order, the owners acknowledged several of the Labor Department’s findings. Messages left for the Mezas at email addresses included in the settlement were not immediately returned.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has affirmed Canada’s commitment to forging stronger ties with India, even in the midst of “credible allegations” regarding the Indian government’s potential involvement in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, as reported by Canada-based National Post. Trudeau emphasized the increasing global significance of India and stressed the “extremely important” nature of constructive engagement with India for Canada and its allies. He underscored India’s emergence as an economic powerhouse and a significant geopolitical player.

However, Trudeau also emphasized the importance of upholding the rule of law and urged India to collaborate with Canada in uncovering the full facts of the matter.

Trudeau mentioned receiving assurances from the United States that Secretary of State Antony Blinken would discuss the allegations with his Indian counterpart during their meeting in Washington DC. Despite India’s strong denial of the allegations, Trudeau’s statements have strained relations further, resulting in the suspension of visa services for India in Canada.

In response, India has issued a travel advisory for its citizens and travelers to Canada, warning of growing anti-India activities and politically-condoned hate crimes.

By now, American voters may have realized that Republican Presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy is no stranger to bringing up eyebrowraising suggestions when it comes to his policies and plans. In a latest, he stated, “He would favor ending birthright citizenship for children of illegal immigrants in the US.”

Ramaswamy said, “He would go a “step further” by ending “birthright citizenship for the kids of illegal immigrants in this country.” The presidential hopeful was speaking at the second Republican debate of the 2024 election cycle held at Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum in Simi Valley, California on Wednesday. Ramaswamy shared the stage with six other candidates that also included another Indian-origin candidate Nikki Haley.

A few days ago, Ramaswamy had criticized the H-1B visa program and said that the current “lottery” system needs to be “gutted” and replaced with a “meritocratic” skill-based immigration scheme to match the needs of the US.

It was Indian American Nikki Haley who ensured that the spotlight was on her at the second Republican Presidential debate. Haley remained impressive amongst all the candidates and did not shy away from taking sharp jibes at other contestants. At one point, she told Vivek Ramaswamy, another Indian American candidate, “Honestly, every time I hear you, I feel a little bit dumber.” Ramaswamy who opened a TikTok account recently said that if Republicans wanted to win the 2024 polls they need to reach to the young generation of Americans where they are. Haley scoffed and said, “This is infuriating because TikTok is one of the most dangerous social media apps we could have…We can’t trust you. We can’t trust you…We can’t have TikToks in our kids’ lives.

Indian-American CEO agrees to pay $20 mn to settle kickback allegations

New York: (IANS) BioTek reMEDys, a Delaware-based pharma company and its Indian-origin CEO Chaitanya Gadde, have agreed to pay $20 million to resolve allegations of violating the False Claims Act of paying kickbacks to patients and physicians to protect its revenue stream. The government alleged that, from at least August 2015 through May 2020, the specialty pharmacy that offers drugs and infusion services, routinely waived the copayments of Medicare and TRICARE patients to induce those patients to purchase its drugs and services.

Many of the specialty drugs offered by BioTek were expensive and required patients to pay large copays, a Department of Justice release stated on Monday.

The government said that the company sought to avoid deterring patients from purchasing its drugs and services by engaging in a scheme, orchestrated and implemented by Gadde to routinely waive these large copays, without regard for whether the patients were experiencing financial hardship.

When a Medicare beneficiary obtains a prescription drug covered by Medicare, the beneficiary may be required to make a partial payment, which may take the form of a copayment, coinsurance or a deductible (collectively copays).

Congress included copay requirements in the Medicare program in part to serve as a check on health care costs.

It was also alleged that BioTek provided remuneration in the form of gifts, dinners and free administrative and clinical support services to physicians to

induce them to refer patients to BioTek.

The government named Dr David Tabby -- who operated a neurology practice in Pennsylvania -- and claimed that he knowingly solicited and accepted the remuneration in exchange for referring numerous patients to BioTek.

The Department's release stated that Tabby has separately paid $480,000 to settle these allegations, based on his ability to pay.

“BioTek allegedly provided improper physician inducements and covered up kickbacks for patient referrals by waiving co-pays,” said US Attorney

Jacqueline C. Romero for the Eastern

District of Pennsylvania.

"BioTek’s alleged scheme, orchestrated and implemented by Gadde, Dr Tabby, and others, to routinely waive these copays -- without regard for whether the patients were experiencing financial hardship -- ensured a steady revenue stream for BioTek and undermined patient care to citizens of this District," Romero said.

The federal Anti-Kickback Statute prohibits the offering, paying, soliciting or accepting, directly or indirectly, of any remuneration -- which includes money or any other thing of value -- to refer or arrange for the referral of items or services payable by any federal healthcare program. This prohibition extends to companies that routinely waive the copays of Medicare patients without determination of financial need.

The Anti-Kickback Statute also extends to the payment of remuneration to physicians in exchange for patient referrals. The civil settlement includes the resolution of claims brought under

the qui tam or whistleblower provisions of the False Claims Act by former BioTek employees Shantae M. Wyatt and Latoya Sparrow. Under those provisions, a private party may file an action on behalf of the US and receive a portion of any recovery. Wyatt and Sparrow will receive $4 million as their share of the settlement with BioTek and Gadde, and $91,200 as their share of the settlement with Dr Tabby.

DHS Rule Proposes H-2 Visa Program Revamp for Worker Safeguards

WASHINGTON, DC – The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is proposing changes to strengthen protections for temporary workers in the H-2A and H-2B programs, which bring foreign workers to the U.S. for temporary agricultural and nonagricultural jobs. The proposed changes aim to enhance worker rights and program efficiency. These reforms include:

• Strengthening protections against employer exploitation, including whistleblower protections.

• Ensuring that employers who violate program requirements may lose access to visas.

FRESNO, CA- Following Seattle, Fresno in California has become the second US city to ban caste discrimination. With a 7-0 vote, the city council voted unanimously to incorporate two new protected categories into its municipal code. Fresno City Council Vice President Annalisa Perea said in a statement after the vote: “I’m proud of our City for once again, raising the bar on civil rights protections.” She added, “While we acknowledge that discrimination won’t end overnight, our City took bold action by passing this antidiscrimination policy to strengthen civil rights protections against caste discrimination.”

CHICAGO, IL- Hundreds of migrants are residing inside a shuttle bus center at Chicago O’Hare International Airport for extended periods as the city grapples with finding suitable shelters. They sleep on the floor, use airport bathrooms, and are monitored by a private company. Chicago is facing challenges in accommodating these migrants while waiting for more shelters to be constructed.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has transported migrants to cities like

Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles, citing the need to ease the burden on border towns overwhelmed by illegal immigration. Chicago has added 15 shelters since May and resettled around 3,000 people, but capacity issues persist. Venezuelan migrant Yoli Cordova fled her home country due to discrimination based on her sexual orientation and expressed uncertainty about receiving help in Chicago. The city is working to address these challenges while maintaining its commitment to being a sanctuary city.

• Clarifying prohibitions on employerimposed fees and protecting workers from exploitative debts.

• Extending grace periods for workers to seek new employment or change immigration status, offering increased flexibility and protection.

• Making H-2 portability permanent, allowing employers facing worker shortages to hire H-2 workers while their petitions are pending.

These changes come in response to the growth of the H-2 programs and aim to safeguard both workers and U.S. businesses. The public has a 60-day comment period to provide feedback on these proposed regulations.

This effort is in line with Executive Order 14012, aimed at strengthening immigration systems and promoting inclusion. This year’s grant program received a $5 million increase from the previous fiscal year.

These Citizenship and Integration Grants support immigrants in becoming citizens by enhancing their English language skills and knowledge of U.S. history and civics. The grants also encourage creative approaches to naturalization preparation. USCIS Director Ur M. Jaddou emphasized the importance of educating remote, underserved, and vulnerable populations about citizenship benefits. This grant program has provided nearly $155 million through 644 competitive grants, assisting over 300,000 LPRs in their journey towards citizenship since its inception in 2009. Sapna Khatri Appointed Director of MA Attorney General's Reproductive Justice Unit

The Director of the United States Domestic Policy Council, Neera Tanden recently spoke about the many achievements of Indian Americans in the United States. Speaking at an event held at India House – the official residence of India’s ambassador to the U.S. she said, “When I first came to Washington, there were just a few people in the Clinton administration that were Indian-American, and today Indian-Americans are throughout the administration. When we are talking about AI issues, the Office of Science and Technology Policy is run by Arti Prabhakar, an Indian American. When you hear the president’s words in his amazing speech on democracy just two days ago, those words are written by Vinay Reddy. In Fact you can’t throw the stone in the White House these days and not hit an IndianAmerican.”

HOUSTON, TX- Five Texas men have pleaded guilty to participating in a scheme to fraudulently obtain and launder millions of dollars in forgivable Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans guaranteed by the Small Business Administration (SBA) under the CARES

Muhammad Anis, 55, Nishant Patel, 41, Harjeet Singh, 49, of Houston, and Arham Uddin, 27, and Ammas Uddin, 30, of Richmond, conspired to defraud the SBA and PPP lenders by submitting false loan applications. They also assisted in laundering the obtained funds by providing blank checks to co-conspirators, who cashed them at check cashing stores. Anis, Patel, Singh, Arham Uddin, and Ammas Uddin each pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud conspiracy and face a maximum penalty of five years in prison. One other individual was convicted at trial, and 15 others have pleaded guilty in connection with the scheme.

The case is being investigated by various agencies, and anyone with information about COVID-19-related fraud can report it to the National Center for Disaster Fraud.

In a newly created role, Indian American Abortion Rights Advocate Sapna Khatri has been appointed as the director of the newly launched Reproductive Justice Unit. The role would focus on ensuring that Massachusetts is a national leader on reproductive justice by expanding

and protecting access to reproductive and gender-affirming care, addressing disparities in maternal health, tackling misinformation and disinformation that prevents access to care, working across state lines to respond to national attacks on reproductive health care, and championing and defending Massachusetts’ strong legal protections for reproductive rights. A press release from the attorney general’s office adds, “The announcement comes in the face of continued nationwide legal challenges to reproductive health access in the aftermath of the Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health, which eliminated the federal right to an abortion.”

She added, “This is really because, over so many years, this community has widened its span to think broadly about contributions to our country. As an immigrant, when I first came to Washington, most people asked me why I was here and not working in medicine, or business or some other area and I don’t get that question anymore because of how much our community has honestly matured and recognized that we can participate and contribute in so many ways.”

She also said, “I think it is the strength of that relationship and the strength of the democratic participation that we are part of that builds on the US-India relationship.”

SC Physician and Nephrology Clinic Settle $585,000 Laboratory Kickback Claims

ORANGEBURG, SC- Dr. Moustafa and his medical practice, South Carolina Nephrology and Hypertension Center Inc., will pay $585,540 to settle False Claims Act allegations. They were accused of receiving illegal kickbacks for referring patients for laboratory testing, violating the Anti-Kickback Statute. They’ve agreed to cooperate with the Justice Department’s investigations of others involved in the alleged kickback schemes.

The Anti-Kickback Statute aims to prevent financial incentives from influencing medical decisions and compromising public healthcare program integrity. Dr. Moustafa and his practice were alleged to have

received kickbacks in the form of office rent, phlebotomy payments, clinical staff, consulting, and medical director payments. These kickbacks came from various sources, including clinical laboratories in South Carolina and New Jersey

and a marketing company named Ralston Health Group Inc. The settlement resolves allegations that these kickbacks led to the submission of false or fraudulent claims to Medicare and TRICARE. The U.S. Attorneys for South Carolina and New Jersey emphasized that kickbacks have no place in healthcare and can raise costs for taxpayers and compromise healthcare program integrity.

The investigation and settlement were carried out with the assistance of various federal agencies, including the FBI, HHS-OIG, and DCIS. It’s important to note that the settlement doesn’t imply liability, and the claims remain allegations at this stage.

Indian American named CFO of Uber Technologies

WASHINGTON, DC - In a significant move, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) is updating its Policy Manual to extend the maximum validity of initial and renewal Employment Authorization Documents (EADs) to 5 years for specific noncitizen categories. This change primarily benefits those who are work-authorized due to their status, such as refugees, asylees, and withholding of removal recipients. It also includes noncitizens who must apply for work authorization, like asylum seekers, adjustment of

The guidance outlines the criteria for individuals automatically authorized to work and clarifies that Form I-94 can serve as a valid employment authorization document for List C of Form I-9, along with identity documentation. Furthermore, it specifies that certain Afghan and Ukrainian parolees are employment authorized through parole. This extension to 5 years aims to streamline the process, reduce the need for renewal Form I-765 applications, and ultimately alleviate processing times and backlogs. However, it's crucial to note that employment authorization remains contingent on individuals' underlying status, circumstances, and EAD category. If, for instance, an EAD is based on a pending adjustment of status application (c)(9) for 5 years but the adjustment application is denied, employment authorization may terminate before the EAD's expiration date.

This decision to implement mask mandates at these specific hospitals may be based on various factors, such

as the local COVID-19 transmission rates, the vaccination status of the community, and the hospital’s capacity to handle potential COVID-19 cases. It’s worth noting that as of now, masking remains optional at all other Hackensack Meridian Health hospitals in the state. As for RWJ/Barnabas Health, which is New Jersey’s largest hospital system,

they have not implemented a mask mandate as of Wednesday, and they have stated that masks remain optional.

In addition to Hackensack Meridian Health, Shore Medical Center in Somers Point and Cape Regional Medical Center in Cape May County have also reinstated mask mandates in September. These hospitals are not part of the Hackensack Meridian network.

In summary, the decision to implement mask mandates in New Jersey hospitals appears to vary by hospital system and may depend on the specific COVID-19 conditions in their respective areas, as well as their individual policies and risk assessments.

In recent years, the fashion industry has experienced a profound evolution, where sustainability and eco-consciousness take center stage in the realm of style. As consumers become increasingly conscious of the environmental impact of their clothing choices, the fashion landscape is embracing ingenious eco-friendly movements. This narrative delves into the current fashion landscape, uncovering the trends in clothing and style that are molding 2023, and forging a new definition of dressing with both conscience and panache.

Vegan and Cruelty-Free

Fashion:

Perfectly in line with eco-friendly fashion, Vegan and cruelty-free fashion is a prominent trend receiving limelight in 2023. Consumers are increasingly opting for products that leave no adverse impact on animals, and often going for plant-based alternatives instead of traditional leather. Fashion designers and brands are pivoting towards the use of organic cotton, hemp, and recycled fabrics, crafting clothing that seamlessly combines style with environmental responsibility. In fact, fashion aficionados can now revel in opulent attire crafted from groundbreaking materials like oceansourced plastic and mycelium-based leather. Sustainable Active Wear

2023: Witnessing a burgeoning trend in sustainable activewear as a high number of individuals are embracing active lifestyles. Brands are honing in on eco-conscious materials and manufacturing techniques for workout attire. Recycled polyester, organic cotton, and bamboo are becoming staple options for sustainable activewear, delivering not only an eco-friendly touch but also elevating comfort and performance to new heights.

Additionally, some activewear brands are also incorporating innovative technologies like moisture-wicking fabrics made from sustainable materials,

making workout gear both functional and eco-conscious. This trend reflects the growing awareness of the connection between personal wellbeing and environmental health.

Nostalgic Revival:

Nostalgia exerts a magnetic pull in the realm of fashion, and the year 2023 is no different. Designers are mining the past for inspiration, breathing new life into styles reminiscent of the '70s, '80s, and '90s. This wave of nostalgia not only pays homage to iconic fashion eras but also champions eco-conscious practices by giving new purpose to vintage and upcycled pieces. This dual approach not only curtails the environmental impact of fast fashion but also injects a contemporary twist to keep the fashion scene dynamic and invigorating.

All it takes is a dash of patience and a sprinkle of imagination to transform your old garments into unique, fashionable, and sustainable pieces, proving that style can be timeless and eco-friendly.

DIY Clothing Fashion

Trends:

In 2023, personalisation is experiencing a revival in the fashion realm. More and more individuals are delving into the world of DIY fashion, infusing their clothing with customised elements that imbue their style with a unique and distinctive flair. This burgeoning trend not only promotes creativity but also forges a deeper connection between individuals and their wardrobes. Eco-friendly fashion dovetails seamlessly with this trend, as it aligns perfectly with the ethos of customisation and sustainability. Many DIY fashion enthusiasts are opting for eco-conscious materials and upcycled fabrics when personalising their clothing. By blending personalisation and eco-friendliness, individuals are not only expressing their unique style but also contributing to a more sustainable and responsible fashion landscape.

Daylight exposure can improve blood sugar control in diabetics: Study

London: (IANS) Improving blood sugar control may be as easy as increasing daytime exposure to natural light, according to a new research that can help millions of people with Type 2 diabetes (T2D). The study showed that natural daylight can boost metabolism and help treat and prevent diabetes. It can also help curb other metabolic conditions, such as obesity.

"The misalignment of our internal circadian clock with the demands of a 24/7 society is associated with an increased incidence of metabolic diseases, including type 2 diabetes," said Ivo Habets, of Maastricht University, in the Netherlands.

"Natural daylight is the strongest zeitgeber, or environmental cue, of the circadian clock but most people are indoors during the day and so under constant artificial lighting.

"Our research shows that the type of light you are exposed to matters for your metabolism. If you work in an office with almost no exposure to natural light, it will have an impact on your metabolism and your risk or control of Type 2 diabetes, so try to get as much daylight as possible, and ideally, get outdoors when you can,” Habets said.

The findings were presented at the ongoing annual meeting of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) in Hamburg, Germany from

October 2-6.

The team carried out a range of metabolic tests on 13 people with T2D when they were exposed to natural light and when they were exposed to artificial light and compared the results. They were exposed to two lighting conditions during office hours (8am to 5pm) in a randomised cross-over fashion: natural daylight from windows and artificial LED lighting.

There was a gap of at least four weeks between the two interventions, each of which lasted 4.5 days. During the natural daylight intervention, the light intensity was usually highest at 12:30pm, with an average reading of 2,453 lux. The artificial light was a constant 300 lux. Evenings were spent in dim light (less than 5 lux) and

the sleeping period (11 p.m. to 7 a.m.) in darkness. The results showed that blood glucose levels were within the normal range for longer during the natural daylight intervention than in the artificial light intervention (59 per cent of the 4.5 days vs. 51 per cent ).

The respiratory exchange ratio (this provides an indication of whether fat or carbohydrates are being used as the source of energy) was lower during the daylight intervention than during the artificial light intervention, indicating that the participants found it easier to switch from using carbohydrate to fat as an energy source when exposed to natural light.

Per1 and Cry1 -- genes that help control circadian rhythms, were more active in natural light than in artificial light Resting energy expenditure and core body temperature followed similar 24-hour patterns in both light conditions.

Serum insulin levels were similar in both light conditions but the pattern of serum glucose and plasma free acids was significantly different between conditions.

"Further research is still needed to determine the extent to which artificial light affects metabolism and the amount of time that needs to be spent in natural light or outdoors to compensate for this," Habets said.

ChatGPT shows promise for effective psychotherapy

Researchers at the University of Chicago have developed a groundbreaking "inverse vaccine" that shows promise in reversing autoimmune diseases like multiple sclerosis, Type-1 diabetes, Crohn's disease, and arthritis.

Unlike traditional vaccines that stimulate the immune system, this innovative approach erases the immune system's memory of specific molecules associated with autoimmune reactions. By leveraging the liver's natural ability

In animal trials focusing on a multiple sclerosis-like disease, the vaccine successfully stopped the immune system from attacking myelin, leading to the restoration of normal nerve function and a reversal of disease symptoms. This breakthrough offers hope for more targeted and less side-effect-prone treatments for autoimmune diseases, which traditionally rely on broad immunosuppression.

The research, published in the journal Nature Biomedical Engineering, represents a significant advancement in the field of autoimmune disease treatment.

Recent research has revealed that OpenAI's ChatGPT-4 possesses the capability to accurately generate personalized personal narratives based on stream-of-consciousness thoughts and demographic details. Two studies conducted by researchers from the Positive Psychology Center at the University of Pennsylvania explored this potential.

Published in the Journal of Positive Psychology, the study findings

demonstrated that ChatGPT-4 could produce individualized narratives that were rated as completely or mostly accurate by 25 out of 26 participants. Additionally, 19 participants found the narratives to be surprisingly insightful, and 19 indicated that they learned something new about themselves.

Professor Martin Seligman, Director of the Positive Psychology Center, emphasized the transformative potential of artificial intelligence in psychotherapy and coaching. ChatGPT-4 was fed recorded stream-of-consciousness thoughts, akin to diary entries, for each participant. The chatbot also generated plausible coaching strategies and interventions based on narratives, showcasing its potential as a tool for self-insight in therapeutic contexts.
