22 Americans Dead In Israel, 17 Missing, Follow "Rules Of Joe Biden Many Hostages Feared: White House War": Urges Israel HiIndia Newsdesk
This attack, Jake Sullivan said, has brought to the surface painful memories and the scars left by millennia of antisemitism and genocide of the Jewish people. The White House has reported that 22 Americans have tragically lost their lives in the recent Hamas attack on Israel, with 17 individuals still unaccounted for. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan expressed concerns that more Americans might be among those taken hostage by the Palestinian group Hamas. Initially, the U.S. government confirmed the deaths of 14 Americans in the attack. Sullivan emphasized that this attack has brought to the forefront painful memories and deep scars left by centuries of antisemitism and the suffering of the Jewish people. He noted that a better understanding has emerged regarding the number of Americans unaccounted

for, with some believed to be held hostage by Hamas. The situation may continue to evolve, possibly revealing additional American hostages. The U.S. is actively engaged with Israel in recovery efforts, offering its expertise in hostage recovery and extending additional defense-related support. This includes replenishing Iron Dome interceptor missiles already in Israel's possession. The presence of the aircraft carrier USS
Gerald R. Ford and its strike group in the Eastern Mediterranean serves as a deterrent to potential actors seeking to escalate or widen the conflict. The U.S. is unequivocal in its message that it stands ready to take action against any hostile entity aiming to destabilize the region. The ongoing conversations with Israeli partners ensure that their essential needs are continually met as the U.S. reaffirms its unwavering commitment to Israel's defense and security.
US To Attend Beijing Defense Forum In Latest Sign Of Improving Ties The United States, however, won't send Lloyd Austin to the event, styled by Beijing as its answer to Singapore's annual Shangri-La Dialogue.

29 – 31. The United States, however, won't send Austin to the event, styled by Beijing as its answer to Singapore's annual Shangri-La Dialogue, where in late May China's defense minister Li Shangfu who has since disappeared from public - declined a formal meeting with the U.S. defense secretary. Although the invitation could be intended to counter U.S. criticism that China has been slow to rebuild military engagement after cutting most ties following then-U.S. Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan in August 2022, it may also signal a desire by Beijing to improve relations, analysts say.
US President Joe Biden has said Israel has a right and a duty to respond to Hamas' attacks over the weekend, which he called an "act of sheer evil". In forceful remarks, he said the US would "stand with Israel" and provide whatever assistance it needed. Mr Biden said at least 14 Americans had been killed in the attacks and other US citizens had been taken hostage. In a later briefing on Tuesday, a national security spokesman said at least 20 Americans were missing.
Washington: The US says it has accepted an invitation to attend China's top annual security forum in late October, the latest sign of potentially warming ties between the two countries' militaries. Washington has been eager to revive military-to-military communications with China, its main strategic rival, and three sources familiar with the matter said Beijing had invited Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin to attend its Xiangshan forum, scheduled for Oct.
NYU Law Student Loses Job Offer Over Anti-Israel Message
Biden Says "Terrorists Beheading Babies" In Israel, White House Clarifies
HiIndia Newsdesk
A law firm’s job offer to a New York University law student was rescinded Tuesday for what the firm described as “inflammatory comments” about Hamas’ attack that killed at least 1,200 Israelis. And at Harvard, student groups began to take back their signatures on a letter that blamed Israel for the violence. The actions were part of a wave of fallout on campuses for students, who are deeply polarized over the fighting. At NYU, Ryna Workman, the president of the university’s Student Bar Association, wrote in a message to the group Tuesday that “Israel bears full responsibility for this tremendous loss of life.”

New Delhi: Hamas' attack on Israel "is an act of sheer evil", US President Joe Biden has said, adding that he never really thought he would see "pictures of terrorists beheading children". "There are moments in this life -- I mean this literally -- when a pure, unadulterated evil is unleashed on this world," he said during a televised White
House address earlier today. "This is an act of sheer evil," Biden added. Later, a White House official clarified to the BBC that Biden did not actually see such images, but was referring to "reports from Israel. The US President has confirmed that at least 14 American citizens have been killed in the surprise attacks on Israel cities this Saturday. The terror attack has triggered a brutal counterstrike from Israel. The attacks and the retaliation have already claimed more than 4,000 lives. In a sharp response, Hamas said Biden's comments were an "attempt to cover crimes" by Israel. "To any country, any organization, anyone thinking of taking advantage of this situation, I have one word: don't," the US President said.
Washington, United States: President Joe Biden urged Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday to follow the rules of war after the Israeli prime minister vowed to destroy Hamas following the Palestinian militants' brutal attack. The 80-year-old president, who has dispatched a US aircraft carrier to the region in a show of support for Israel, also warned Hamas-backer Iran to "be careful." Biden told a gathering of US Jewish community leaders at the White House that the attacks on Israel in which 1,200 people were killed was the "deadliest day for Jews since the Holocaust."
"Will Stand With Ukraine For As Long As It Takes": US
HiIndia Newsdesk
Brussels: U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said on Wednesday the United States would continue to support Ukraine for as long as it takes, amid political chaos in Congress and the crisis in the Middle East. "The United States will stand with Ukraine for as long as it takes," he said at the start of a meeting of Ukraine's allies in Brussels.

The Palestinian territory's sole power plant shut down on Wednesday after running out of fuel.
Jerusalem: Israeli Energy Minister Israel Katz vowed Thursday his country would not allow basic resources or humanitarian aid into Gaza until Hamas released the people it kidnapped during its surprise weekend onslaught. "Humanitarian aid to Gaza? No electric switch will be turned on, no water tap will be opened and no fuel truck will enter until the Israeli abductees are

Russia fully supports two-state solution in Palestinian-Israeli conflict: Putin

Gaza: (IANS) A senior Hamas official has said that it was too early to exchange Israeli hostages who were taken captive after the militant group launched its surprise attack on the Jewish nation on October 7. Speaking to CNN on Wednesday from Doha, Izzat al-Risheq said: "We will only discuss this issue when the Israeli aggression against our people ends." Denying that Hamas had any help from Iran or the Hezbollah in Lebanon in executing the large-scale unprecedented assault on Israel, the official said: "I say it very clearly that this operation was a 100 per cent Hamas operation without any help from any regional party."

UK economy returns to growth in August

Journalist Cheng Lei has returned home to Australia after more than three years of detention in China. "She was met at the airport by the Foreign Minister Penny Wong," Australia's Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said, announcing her release. Cheng Lei, 48, was working as a business reporter for China's state-run English language TV station CGTN when she was arrested on 13 August 2020. She was later accused of "illegally supplying state secrets overseas".
The UK economy grew in August following a sharper fall in July as the education sector recovered from strike action, according to official figures. The Office for National Statistics said the economy expanded by 0.2% in August, in line with forecasts. Updated figures showed that July performed worse than originally thought. But despite this, the ONS said overall the economy had grown "modestly" over the past three months. But in August, the services sector was the main contributor to the 0.2% growth, the ONS said.
Egypt warned Israel days before Hamas struck
HiIndia Newsdesk
Israel was warned by Egypt of potential violence three days before Hamas' deadly cross-border raid, a US congressional panel chairman has said. House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee head Michael McCaul told reporters of the alleged warning. Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu described the reports as "absolutely false".Israeli intelligence services are under scrutiny for their failure to prevent the deadliest attack by Palestinian militants in Israel's 75year history.
As hundreds of thousands of Israeli troops, regular and reservist, gather on Gaza's borders, the Israeli government faces a near impossible situation. At least 150 hostages seized by Hamas gunmen from southern Israel last Saturday are now being held at secret locations inside Gaza. Among them are women, children and the elderly. One idea being mooted is for Hamas to release its women and child prisoners in exchange for 36 Palestinian women and adolescent prisoners being held in Israeli jails. In normal times the number one priority for Israel would be the return of those hostages, today it is the elimination of Hamas as a military threat. Hamas has threatened to "execute" one hostage for each time an Israeli
airstrike kills civilians without warning. Hamas will want to take maximum advantage of any serving military personnel it holds, extracting the highest price for their release if negotiations take place. This leaves the Israeli government with a dilemma when it comes to the hostages. Does it attempt an armed rescue mission, something fraught with risks? Or does it wait for longer, until Hamas is so weakened by airstrikes, that it might be more willing to make a deal? Israel has been quick to set up a Hostage Situation Room, collating everything it knows on the identity and status of each of the hostages who were dragged at gunpoint across the border into Gaza on Saturday. Reports are emerging that the US is providing assistance with intelligence data and possibly even support from its own Special Forces. A large US Navy carrier group is positioning itself offshore in the eastern Mediterranean. But Hamas have shown themselves capable of asymmetric warfare, of being able to make up for Israel's massive advantage in technology and firepower. By avoiding leaving a digital trail in their communications and keeping those communications to a minimum, they were able to take Israel by surprise on 7 October. Their gunmen who are currently holding those 150-plus hostages will be staying offline and off the airwaves as far as possible and will almost certainly have removed every digital device from their captives.

Rescuing Hostages in Gaza a Complex Challenge
Israel targeting ‘layer of tunnels’ in Gaza
PM Modi Visits Uttarakhand, Prays at Parvati Kund
HiIndia Newsdesk
Rescuing over 150 hostages held in the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip has become a complex and daunting task for Israel. The densely populated terrain, extensive network of underground tunnels, and the sheer number of hostages make this crisis unprecedented. Hostages were captured by Palestinian militants who breached Israel’s southern border, prompting a significant military response. Hamas demands the release of 5,200 Palestinians held in Israeli jails in exchange for the captives, threatening to kill hostages in response to Israeli attacks on Gaza. The situation is further complicated by the involvement of other nations’ citizens and potential dual nationals among the hostages. The complex challenge requires a delicate balance between ensuring safety and not giving in to Hamas’s demands.
HiIndia Newsdesk
Jerusalem, Oct 12 (IANS) The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) on Thursday said the latest airstrikes were aimed at destroying a network of tunnels in the Gaza Strip that the Hamas has used as an operations centre for decades. “Think of the Gaza strip as one layer for civilians and one layer for Hamas,” IDF spokesman Jonathan Conricus said in a post on X. The tunnels, which were built over the years since the militant group took control of the envlave in 2007, have served as a way for Hamas to move supplies as well as plan and launch operations against Israel, the BBC quoted the spokesman as saying.

Riyadh: Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman discussed the Palestinian-Israeli conflict on Wednesday, in the first telephone call between the two leaders since a China-brokered deal between Tehran and Riyadh to resume ties. Raisi and the Saudi crown prince discussed the “need to end war crimes against Palestine,” Iranian state media said. The Saudi crown prince, for his part, “affirmed that the Kingdom is making all possible efforts in communicating with all international and regional parties to stop the ongoing escalation,” Saudi state news agency SPA said. He also reiterated Saudi Arabia’s rejection of targeting civilians in any way, SPA added. Saudi Arabia and Iran agreed to resume ties in March under a deal negotiated by China after seven years of hostility, which had threatened stability and security in the Gulf and helped fuel conflicts in the Middle East, from Yemen to Syria.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived here on Thursday, and began his daylong visit to the border state with a darshan of the Adi Kailash peak, an abode of Lord Shiva, and a puja at Parvati Kund. He will lay the foundation stone for multiple development projects and address a public meeting during this visit to the Kumaon region of the state. Wearing a traditional tribal outfit complete with a turban and ‘ranga’ (upper body garment), Modi performed an ‘aarti’ and blew the conch shell at the Shiva-Parvati temple situated along the banks of Parvati Kund in Jolingkong.

Iran and Saudi Leaders Discuss Ending Palestine War Crimes
HiIndia Newsdesk
According to Conricus, the tunnels are under Gaza City and go all the way down to Khan Yunis and Rafah. He said that the Gaza Strip needs to be thought of in two layers -- one for the civilians at ground level and a second underground layer for Hamas. “What we are trying to do now is get to that second layer that Hamas has built These are not bunkers for the Gazan civilians to have access to when Israel is striking.” The IDF spokesman went on to say that “the enormity and significance of the tunnels is obscured by the densely populated communities on the ground above, many of which now lay in ruins”, the BBC reported.
India has launched “Operation Ajay” to facilitate the return of Indian citizens from Israel, as escalating attacks by Hamas militants on Israeli towns have raised fresh tensions in the region. TOP STORIES OF THE WEEK
Who is Mohammed Deif?
The shadowy Hamas commander known as 'The Guest'
Mohammed Deif is famously elusive, keeping his face out of the public domain and only rarely appearing in video messages - including one after Hamas's surprise attack on Israel. Sky News looks at what is known about the man nicknamed "The Guest" or "the cat with nine lives".
T
he secretive commander behind Hamas's attack on Israel on Saturday is a shadowy figure. Mohammed Deif, the commander of the militant group's military wing, is known as "The Guest", or sometimes "the cat with nine lives". The first nickname is taken from his nom de guerre - Deif means guest in Arabic - referencing his habit of staying with different sympathisers each night to avoid detection. The second is a reference to his knack for evading Israeli assassination attempts.
A rare public appearance
In the hours after Hamas's surprise attack on Israel, Deif appeared in a recorded video message, announcing the beginning of what he called "Operation Al Aqsa Storm". "Enough is enough," he said in the message, as he called on Palestinians to join the fight. He said the incursion was in response to the 16-year blockade of Gaza, Israeli raids inside West Bank cities over the past year, violence at Al Aqsa - the disputed Jerusalem holy site - increasing attacks by settlers on Palestinians and the growth of settlements. "We've decided to put an end to all this," he said.
Hamas's elusive military commander
Deif joined Hamas around 1990 and learnt the skill of bombmaking under Yehya Ayyash, a renowned bombmaker known as "the engineer". He was accused of masterminding a slew of suicide bombings from 1995 onwards and was held personally responsible for the deaths of dozens of Israelis. He was also credited with being the architect of a sophisticated network of tunnels beneath the Gaza Strip and designing the Qassam rocket. A Hamas source, who has known Deif since the 1990s, told Reuters
He was also credited with being the architect of a sophisticated network of tunnels beneath the Gaza Strip and designing the Qassam rocket. A Hamas source, who has known Deif since the 1990s, told Reuters Deif has been at the heart of developments inside the armed wing since 1994. Deif has been at the heart of developments inside the armed wing since 1994. In 2002, he became head of the Qassam Brigades - the military offshoot of Hamas - after Israel assassinated its former leader. Deif 's low profile is the reason for his success, according to a former senior Hamas leader who spoke to the Washington Post in 2014. There are hardly any photos of Deif in the public domain, testament to his secretive nature. "He keeps a low profile and lives hidden among the population. He moves with different passports and different identities," Imad Falouji said. "He's successful until now because the circle around him is very small. That is why he is still alive." Falouji told the newspaper Deif was perceived by Palestinians as down-to-earth and his hard-line attitude towards Israel was seen as an accurate reflection of the interests of Palestinians.

"There are two brains, but there is one mastermind," How A Hamas Commander Planned Israel Attack
Israel calls last week's devastating attack by Hamas its 9/11 moment. The secretive mastermind behind the assault, Palestinian militant Mohammed Deif, calls it Al Aqsa Flood. The phrase Israel's most wanted man used in an audio tape broadcast as Hamas fired thousands of rockets out of the Gaza strip on Saturday signalled the attack was payback for Israeli raids at Jerusalem's Al Aqsa mosque. It was in May 2021, after a raid on Islam's third holiest site that enraged the Arab and Muslim world, when Deif began planning the operation that has killed more than 1,200 people in Israel, according to a source close to Hamas in Gaza. "It was triggered by scenes and footage of Israel storming Al Aqsa mosque during Ramadan, beating worshippers, attacking them, dragging elderly and young men out of the mosque," the source said. "All this fuelled and ignited the anger." That storming of the mosque compound, long a flashpoint for violence over matters of sovereignty and religion in Jerusalem, helped set off 11 days of fighting between Israel and Hamas. More than two years on, Saturday's assault, the worst breach in Israeli defences since the 1973 Arab-Israeli conflict, pushed Israel to declare war and launch retaliatory strikes on Gaza that had killed more than 800 people by Tuesday. A survivor of seven Israeli assassination attempts, the most recent in 2021, Deif rarely speaks and never appears in public. So when Hamas's TV channel announced he was about to speak on Saturday, Palestinians knew something significant was afoot. "Today the rage of Al Aqsa, the rage of our people and nation is exploding. Our mujahedeen (fighters), today is your day to make this criminal understand that his time has ended," Deif said in the recording. There are only three images of Deif: one in his 20s, another of him masked, and an image of his shadow, which was used when the audio tape was broadcast. The whereabouts of Deif are unknown, though he is most likely in Gaza in the maze of tunnels under the enclave. An Israeli security source said Deif was directly involved in the planning and operational aspects of the attack.
TWO BRAINS, ONE MASTERMIND Palestinian sources said one of the homes Israeli air strikes hit in Gaza overnight belonged to Deif 's father. Deif 's brother and two other family members were killed in the strike, according to the sources. The source close to Hamas said the decision to prepare the attack was taken jointly by Deif, who commands Hamas's Al Qassam Brigades, along with Yehya Sinwar, the leader of Hamas in Gaza, but it was clear who was the architect. "There are two brains, but there is one mastermind," the source said, adding that information about the operation was known only to a handful of Hamas leaders. Secrecy was such that Iran, Israel's sworn foe and an important source of finance, training and weaponry for Hamas, knew only in general terms that the movement was planning a major operation and did not know the timing or the details, according to a regional source familiar with the group's thinking. The source said that while Tehran was aware a major operation was being prepared, it was not discussed in any joint operation rooms involving Hamas, the Palestinian leadership, Iranian-backed Lebanese militants Hezbollah, and Iran. "It was a very tight circle," the source said. Iran's top authority Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said on Tuesday Tehran was not involved in the attack on Israel. Washington has said while Tehran was complicit, it had no intelligence or evidence that points to Iran's direct participation in the attacks. The plan as conceived by Deif involved a prolonged effort at deception. Israel was led to believe that Hamas, an ally of Israel's sworn foe Iran, was not interested in launching a conflict and was focusing instead on economic development in Gaza, where the movement is the governing power. But while Israel began providing economic incentives to Gazan workers, the group's fighters were being trained and drilled, often in plain sight of the Israeli military, a source close to Hamas said. "We have prepared for this battle for two years," said Ali Baraka, the head of external relations for Hamas. Speaking in a calm voice, Deif said in his recording that Hamas had repeatedly warned Israel to stop its crimes against Palestinians, to release prisoners, whom he said were abused and tortured, and to halt its expropriation of Palestinian land. "Every day the occupation storm our villages, towns and cities in the West Bank and raid houses, kill, injure, destroy and detain. At the same time, it confiscates thousands of acres of our land, uproots our people from their houses to build settlements while its criminal siege continues on Gaza."

Following the recent devastating attack by the Hamas group, Israel’s former Prime Minister, Yair Lapid, has pledged that Israel will take decisive action to prevent such incidents in the future. In an exclusive interview with NDTV, Lapid expressed the urgency of denying Hamas the capabilities to carry out attacks that target civilians, emphasizing the need for a patient and challenging response. Israel has initiated a robust counterstrike in retaliation to the Hamas attack, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowing to avenge the tragic events. The conflict has resulted in over 1,100 casualties on both sides. Israel controls the air space over Gaza and its shoreline, and restricts who and what goods are allowed in and out through its border crossings. Similarly, Egypt controls who passes in and out of its border with Gaza, the BBC reported. RUNNING better than antidepressants to tackle depression
I
n terms of improving mental health, running for depression or anxiety and taking antidepressants showed similar benefits -- a 16-week course of running over the same period scored higher in terms of physical health improvement, whereas antidepressants led to a slightly worse physical condition, a new study has said. The study published in the journal Affective Disorders recruited 141 patients with depression or anxiety. They were offered a choice of treatment -- SSRI antidepressants for 16 weeks or group-based running therapy for 16 weeks. Forty-five chose antidepressants, with 96 participating in running. The antidepressant group took the SSRI Escitalopram for 16 weeks. The running group aimed for two to three closely supervised 45-minute group sessions per week (over 16 weeks). At the end of the trial, around 44 per cent in both groups showed an improvement in depression and anxiety, however, the running group also showed improvements in weight, waist circumference, blood pressure, and heart function, whereas the antidepressant group showed a tendency towards a slight deterioration in these metabolic markers. "Both interventions helped with the depression to around the same extent. Antidepressants generally had worse impact on body weight, heart rate variability and blood pressure, whereas running therapy led to improved effect on general fitness and heart rate for instance," said Brenda Penninx, professor at Amsterdam University Medical Centres (UMC), Netherlands. While most people are compliant in taking antidepressants, around half of the running group adhered to the two-times-a-week exercise therapy, the study showed. "These are very interesting results that again show that physical health can influence mental health and that treatment of depression and anxiety can be achieved by exercising, obviously without the adverse effects of antidepressant drugs. However, several remarks are important," said Dr Eric Ruhe, Amsterdam UMC.

US healthcare workers to end strike on Sat; threaten to resume next month The largest healthcare workers' strike in the United States, involving over 75,000 individuals from various disciplines, will conclude on Saturday at 6 a.m. Pacific Time. The strike, spanning four states, was organized by a coalition of unions representing healthcare workers at Kaiser Permanente, one of the nation's largest non-profit health plans. The unions rejected Kaiser Permanente's wage offer of a 5% increase in the first three years of the new contract and a 4% raise in the final year for all unionized
The unions rejected Kaiser Permanente's wage offer of a 5% increase in the first three years of the new contract and a 4% raise in the final year for all unionized employees. employees. Instead, they demanded a 6.5% increase in the first two years and a 5.75% increase in the final two years. While ending the strike in the public
interest, the workers have maintained the option of another strike next month if their demands are not met. Union leaders argue that higher wages are
necessary to address severe staffing shortages in the healthcare sector, which have been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Kaiser Permanente has claimed that it has taken steps to hire more staff, but the unions dispute this assertion, arguing that internal role shifts are not sufficient to address the shortage, which they deem "unsafe." The strike has impacted patients in the affected states, despite the healthcare provider's contingency plans.
