"US Has A Broken Immigration System, Needs Repairing": Kamala Harris
US has a broken immigration system that needs to be repaired, Vice President Kamala Harris said on Wednesday in a rare interview with the Republican-leaning news channel during which she sparred with its popular host.
Washington:
The United States has a broken immigration system that needs to be repaired, Vice President Kamala Harris said on Wednesday in a rare interview with the Republican-leaning news channel during which she sparred with its popular host.
“The point is that we have a broken immigration system that needs to be repaired,'” Ms Harris told Fox News anchor Bret Baier in a rare sit-down with the news channel.
“So, your Homeland Security Secretary said that 85 per cent of apprehensions,” Mr Baier interjected. “I'm not finished. We have an immigration system,” Ms Harris tried to continue with her answer.
“It's a rough estimate that 6 million people have been released into the country,” the Fox News anchor interrupted again.
“And let me just finish. I'll get to the question. I promise you. I was beginning to answer,” the vice president pleaded.
Russia Warns US Nuclear Arms in Japan Risk Region
Moscow: Any deployment of US nuclear weapons to Japan in the framework of an "Asian NATO" would lead to a collapse in regional stability, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Wednesday.
Japan's new Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, on the eve of taking office, outlined a plan to revamp Tokyo's closest alliance by locking Washington into an "Asian NATO" and stationing Japanese troops on US soil. The new security alliance, Ishiba said, could even share control of Washington's nuclear weapons as a deterrent against Japan's nuclear-armed neighbours. "And this will lead to what? The correct answer is - the collapse of any stability in an already long-suffering region," Zakharova said.
"This will become a monstrous catalyst for escalation in the region with unknown consequences, or rather, the consequences are known, but we do not want to voice them," Zakharova said, adding that such a move would demonstrate Tokyo's subservience to Washington and its willingness to blindly implement American policies on Japanese soil.
“When you came into office, your administration immediately reversed a number of Trump border policies. Most significantly, the policy that required illegal immigrants to be detained through deportation, either in the U.S. or in Mexico. And you switched that policy. They were... released from custody awaiting trial. So instead, included in those were a large number of single men, adult men, who went on to commit
heinous crimes. So looking back, do you regret the decision to terminate Remain in Mexico at the beginning of your administration?” Mr Baier asked again.
“At the beginning of our administration, within practically hours of taking the oath, the first bill, practically within hours of taking the oath, was a bill to fix our immigration system,” Ms Harris said as Mr Baier kept on interjecting in between.
“We recognized from day one that to the point of this being your first question, It is a priority for us as a nation and for the American people. Our focus has been on fixing a problem. From day one, then, we have done a number of things, including to address our asylum system and put more resources, getting more judges, what we needed to do to tighten up penalties and increase penalties for illegal crossings, what we needed to do to deal with points of entry between border, entry points,” she said.
More than a dozen lawsuits target Sean 'Diddy' Combs as he sits in jail
Hip-hop mogul Sean "Diddy" Combs is currently in federal custody awaiting trial on charges of racketeering and sex trafficking. His arrest in New York came amid a series of civil suits alleging sexual assault and physical violence, some going back
to the 1990s. More than a dozen people have filed lawsuits against the rapper, accusing him of using his influence in the entertainment industry to do everything from drugging, assaulting and raping people.
The latest batch of lawsuits include one from a man who was 16 years old at the time and said the rapper told him to unclothe at a party in New York in 1998 and another from a woman who claims Mr Combs raped her as "payback" for a comment she made suggesting that he was responsible for the murder of rapper Tupac Shakur. The Harlem-born rapper has denied any criminal wrongdoing.
Nearly 100 still missing in North Carolina after Hurricane Helene
Ninety-two people are still unaccounted for in North Carolina, weeks after Hurricane Helene devastated the western part of the state, Governor Roy Cooper said on Tuesday.
In a news conference on Tuesday, Cooper warned that number could change as more reports of missing people are resolved. "I want to caution that this is not a definitive count, because the task force is continuing its work," he said. Ninety-five people are known to have
Musk Donates $75M to Trump's Campaign
Washington: Billionaire Elon Musk has donated almost $75 million to the political action committee he created to support Donald Trump's US presidential campaign, according to filings made late Tuesday, illustrating the Tesla founder's growing commitment to the Republican's cause. Musk, estimated to be the world's richest man, has taken an increasingly visible role in Trump's campaign, accompanying him on stage at a recent rally in Pennsylvania and frequently lambasting his opponent, Democrat Kamala Harris, on social media. Trump frequently name-checks Musk at rallies and has promised to appoint him to a committee tasked with slashing government bureaucracy.
Kamala Harris Calls Donald Trump "Unstable"
Democrat's US presidential nominee Kamala Harris attacked her Republican rival Donald Trump on Thursday, calling him "unstable" and questioning the 78-year-old former president's fitness for office. In an interview with right-wing Fox News, Harris, 59, blasted Trump - the oldest major-party presidential candidate ever - for threatening to use the military against internal enemies.
died in North Carolina as a result of the storm, while more than 220 have been killed in total, including in Florida, where the storm made landfall.
During the news conference, Cooper also made reference to the "persistent and dangerous flow of misinformation" circulating about the hurricane, which he said was continuing to complicate relief efforts. He said such misinformation "breeds confusion and demoralises storm survivors and response workers alike".
"If you're participating in spreading this stuff, stop it," Cooper warned. "Whatever your aim is, the people you are really hurting are those in western North Carolina who need help."
His remarks come as federal workers have had to confront rising distrust from some local residents as a result of the spread of a number of false conspiracy theories relating to Helene.

India, Canada must engage in open dialogue for resolution: Ontario-based organisation
Amid the India-Canada diplomatic row, an Ontario-based organisation has said that it is "crucial" that both nations engage in open dialogue and work toward peaceful resolutions, stressing that maintaining strong bilateral ties is essential for Canada’s security, prosperity, and global standing.
The Canada-India Foundation, in a statement to PTI, said that as a Canadian organisation deeply committed to advancing Canada's national interests, it remains dedicated to fostering strong and mutually beneficial relationships between Canada and India.
"In these times of diplomatic tension, it is crucial that both nations engage in open dialogue and work toward peaceful resolutions. We firmly believe that maintaining strong bilateral ties is essential for Canada’s security,
Migrant deportations to increase, says EU chief
EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has said the bloc could "draw lessons" from the contested Italian policy of processing migrants offshore in Albania ahead of an EU summit focusing on migration.
She made the remarks in a letter to member states ahead of the meeting in Brussels on Thursday and Friday, where she said the European Commission would present a new proposal for legislation to increase deportations of migrants.
Over 140 Killed As Fuel Tanker Explodes In Nigeria
Nigeria: An explosion has killed more than 140 people in northern Nigeria as crowds rushed to collect fuel spilling from a crashed tanker, officials told AFP on Wednesday.
It's the latest such accident at a time when petrol has become a precious commodity during Nigeria's worst economic crisis in a generation. The fuel tanker had veered to avoid another vehicle and crashed in the town of Majiya in Jigawa state on Tuesday, police said.

The organisation said it also recognises the growing threat posed by extremist
ideologies that “disrupt the fabric of Canadian society and threaten the well-being of our diverse communities, including Indo-Canadians.
"It is vital that we remain vigilant against these divisive forces, which not only strain international relations but also jeopardize the peace, security, and inclusivity that are core to Canada's identity," it said.
It added that as Indo-Canadians, “we stand unequivocally with our government in its efforts to ensure justice is served and that Canadians are fully informed of the truth."

Israel Assures U.S. It Won’t Strike Iran's Nuclear, Oil Sites
The Israeli government has told the Biden administration that it will avoid striking Iran’s nuclear enrichment and oil production sites when it responds to Tehran’s recent missile attack, two officials said, a move that may reduce the immediate likelihood of an all-out war between the two adversaries.
The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive
diplomacy, said that Israel had agreed to focus its next attack on military targets in Iran instead of sites related to Iran’s oil industry or its uranium enrichment efforts. The Biden administration believes that if Israel were to hit such targets, it could set off an escalation in West Asia at a time when Israel is already at war with Iranian proxies in Gaza and Lebanon.
While no final decision is believed to have been made, an Israeli retaliation could still be large in scale, possibly prompting Iran to continue the cycle of attacks. And the officials said the Israeli pledge, first reported by The Washington Post, related only to its next attack against Iran — meaning that it could still pursue more ambitious targets in future rounds of fighting.
North Korea Claims 1.4 Million Young People Joined Army This Week
Seoul: North Korean state media on Wednesday said around 1.4 million young people including students and youth league officials joined or returned to the army this week.
The young people are determined to fight in a "sacred war of destroying the enemy with the arms of the revolution," the KCNA report said.
North Korea's claim of having over one million young people enlisting in the country's Korean People's Army in just two days comes at a time when
Italy bans couples from travelling abroad for surrogacy
Italy has made it illegal for couples to go abroad to have a baby through surrogacy. The move extends a ban on the practice inside the country to also include those who seek it out in places where it is legal, like the US or Canada. Those who break the law could face up to two years in prison and fines of up to €1m (£835,710).
The law, proposed by the Italy's far-right governing party, is seen by critics to target LGBT couples - who are not allowed to adopt or use IVF in the country.

One Direction star Liam Payne dies after balcony fall - police
tensions in the Korean peninsula are running high.
Last year, North Korean media made a similar claim of its citizens volunteering to join the military to fight against the United States.
North Korea blew up sections of interKorean roads and rail lines on its side of the heavily fortified border between the two Koreas on Tuesday, prompting South Korea's military to fire warning shots.
Pyongyang has also accused Seoul of sending drones over the North Korean capital and the two Koreas have clashed over balloons of trash floated since May from North Korea. Pyongyang has said the launches are a response to balloons sent by anti-regime activists in the South.
"If a war breaks out, the ROK will be wiped off the map. As it wants a war, we are willing to put an end to its existence," the KCNA report said.
Liam Payne, the former One Direction star, has died aged 31 in Argentina after falling from the third floor of a hotel in Buenos Aires, police say. In a statement, police said they discovered Payne's body after an emergency crew responded to an emergency call in the upscale neighbourhood of Palermo. Payne had risen to global fame as part of the much-loved boyband created on the X Factor TV show in 2010, along with Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan and Zayn Malik.

Five Eyes Back Canada in India Dispute Over Nijjar
US state department spokesman Mike Miller said: “The allegations are extremely serious, and they need to be taken seriously, and we wanted to see the Government of India cooperate with Canada in its investigation"
Canada’s partners in the Five Eyes Anglosphere intelligence network, including the US, have rallied around Ottawa in its diplomatic standoff with New Delhi over India’s alleged hand in the killing of Khalistani activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar on Canadian soil. All four partners of Canada in the Five Eyes — Australia, New Zealand, the UK and the US — have over the past couple of days come out with statements backing Ottawa. The US and the UK have even urged India to cooperate with the Canadian investigation into Nijjar’s murder in British Columbia in June 2023. Asked for a reaction to Canada expelling Indian diplomats alleging they are “persons of interest” in the Nijjar probe, US state department spokesman Mike Miller said: “The allegations are extremely serious, and they need to be taken seriously, and we wanted to see the Government of India cooperate with Canada in its investigation. Obviously, they have not chosen that path.”
More Air Marshals
Deployed After Bomb Hoaxes
The Centre has decided to deploy more air marshals to bolster security on passenger aircraft on “sensitive” international and domestic routes amid the rising number of bomb threats on flights, sources in the Union home ministry said on Wednesday. Over the past two days, at least 12 bomb threats had been received by various airlines on domestic and international routes and all of them were found to be hoaxes. Some flights were diverted while some airlines had to re-screen all the passengers, leading to major delays and inconvenience.
"No Evidence At All" On Trudeau's Claims: India
India-Canada Row: Putting the onus of the grave diplomatic situation entirely on the incumbent Prime Minister of Canada's conduct, the statement noted that "The responsibility for the damage that this cavalier behaviour has caused to India-Canada relations lies with Prime Minister Trudeau alone."

In a late night post by the Ministry of External Affairs, India affirmed its stand on the massive diplomatic row with Canada. Putting the responsibility of the disastrous diplomatic fallout squarely on Justin Trudeau, the foreign ministry reiterated that "Canada has presented us with no evidence whatsoever".
In its terse-but-sharp response to Mr Trudeau's deposition at the Commission of Inquiry, the foreign ministry wrote in its post-midnight statement that "What we have heard today only confirms what we have been saying consistently

"If Good Neighbourliness Is Missing...": S Jaishankar's Swipe At China, Pakistan
Islamabad:
Speaking about the challenges faced in the region, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar in his address at the SCO Summit in Islamabad today made a veiled reference about China and Pakistan. The foreign minister said, "If trust is lacking or cooperation inadequate, if friendship has fallen short and good neighbourliness is missing somewhere, there are surely reasons to introspect and causes to address," adding that "It is only when we reaffirm our commitment most sincerely to the Charter that we can fully
realise the benefits of cooperation and integration that it envisages."
Mr Jaishankar's remarks come at a time where relations both with China and Pakistan are severely strained due to issues of terrorism from Pakistan and military standoffs with China along the Line of
Actual Control.
Ties between India and Pakistan have gone into a deep-freeze as India has made it clear that dialogue can happen only in an atmosphere "free of terror" and that the ball is now in Pakistan's court for them to end the scourge of terrorism. As for China, ties have diminished to the very minimum after Beijing's multiple unilateral actions along the Line of Actual Control over the last few years. There can be no cooperation when there is no trust, and that is what Mr Jaishankar highlighted in his subtle, yet clearly evident reference to the two neighbours.

From a Monk to a Billionaire to now a Tax Cheat –The Infamous Life of Manoj Bhargava
An Indian American philanthropist who was known for donating hundreds of millions of dollars to charity causes in India is now facing the possibility of facing the largest tax penalties in the US. Interestingly, Manoj Bhargava who shot to fame and money by launching his 5-hour energy caffeine shots has a curious past – that of being a monk. While Godmen, gurus and monks getting caught in the web of deceit and money default may not be a first for Indians but every time a news surfaces of a man with a supposed charitable past getting exposed, there is likely to be shock and surprise and same is the case with Bhargava and his impending investigations.
As the authorities carry on with their enquiry here’s looking at Manoj Bhargava’s infamous modus operandi involving hiding millions of dollars in Swiss banks
Who is Manoj Bhargava?
71-year-old Manoj Bhargava is not your typical rags to riches story. In Fact he was born to wealth. He belongs to an extremely well-off family from North India. Born in India, in 1953, Bhargava moved to the United States when he was 14-yearsold. The family made Philadelphia their new home. Bhargava went on to enroll in the prestigious Princeton University in 1970 but dropped out a year later.
He turned his life totally and decided to spend his life living in India as a practicing monk and followed a guru. It was here during his decadelong monk life that Bhargava formed some connections that are now under

scrutiny too during the current investigation. He met the son of guru Mahipal and his wife Indu Rawat.
After a decade of monk life in India, Bhargava returned to the US. He then went on to start his business dealing with chemical solutions and medicine. But his moment of success came after he created the 5-Hour Energy drink. Even though most of his inventions failed, he was able to position himself as a big philanthropist who donated hundreds of millions he was earning from his business to help the needy. However, soon his reputation got bust when found himself in an investigation by tax authorities.
How he got Caught
Bhargava’s massive tax evasions came to light when the authorities began cracking down on billionaires who evaded tax through charitable donations. It was during this time that the pressure on Switzerland banks and other wealth havens to reveal customer data led to the discovery of his tax evasions. Pictet, a bank based in Geneva which Bhargava mainly used, shared information about its wealthy clientele after admitting to hiding around $5.6 billion during an investigation.
Bhargava continues to maintain he practices a “zero profit” business model, making money from the rich and giving it to the poor. But for now, the accusation against him says that he improperly lowered his tax bill by gifting a $624 million stake in his 5-Hour Energy partnership to a family member of a prominent guru, Indu Rawat, a Canadian citizen. It is then that he bought it back with an IOU, without losing control of the company.
Indian American Billionaire and Past Monk Could Face Largest Tax Penalties in the US
Manoj Bhargava an Indian American business and philanthropist has come under the scanner for tax abuse. The Wall Street Journal has called him a tax cheat. Curiously, Bhargava was also a monk in the past. Known for his 5-hour energy caffeine shot which catapulted him to a billionaire status, Bhargava rose to popularity when he gave hundreds of millions of dollars to charity. A Detroit resident, Bhargava also built a lab outside his home where he created social welfare inventions. But his charitable status came crashing as the tax authorities have put him under investigation for tax abuse.
According to reports, Bhargava has been accused of improperly lowering his tax bill. He did so by gifting a $624 million stake in his 5-Hour Energy partnership to a family member of a prominent guru, a Canadian citizen named Indu Rawat. It is said that he befriended Rawat during his monk life in India. He then bought it back with an IOU, without ever losing control of the company. Bhargava tried to hide his Swiss bank accounts with the help of Rawat, who assisted him with charitable donations to millions in India, as per the Senate Finance Committee claims. A report by CNBC also claimed that Bhargava could face the largest tax penalties in the US.

Indian Students planning to Study at Canadian Colleges Worried; Look for alternate Options No more Chalo Canada?
Zofeen Maqsood
As all eyes are currently on the worsening diplomatic relations between India and Canada, there is a group of young Indians who are spending sleepless nights. Over the years, Canada has emerged as one of the most popular destinations for Indian students seeking to study abroad, surpassing even the United States and the United Kingdom.
According to the available data, in the year 2023, over 4,27000 students from India went to study in Canada, making India the top country sending its students to Canada for studying purposes. The US came a close second by receiving over 3,51,000 students from India. All across India and especially in the north of India, Canada remains amongst the most sought-after choices for study and work-based migration. No wonder, over the years Indians came up to form about 4 percent of Canadian population with about 1.3 million strong population as per the 2021 census.
However, with the changing political climate there is a pall of worry which has descended amongst the parents and youngsters who were looking at Canada as a viable option to study abroad.
The news of Canada kicking-off six of Indian diplomats on Monday due to the ongoing rift around the murder of Sikh separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar, traveled with a lightning speed not just in political circles but in another unexpected circles – those of study abroad centers and counselling
services which have mushroomed across big and small cities all across India.
Pradeep Kapoor, who runs a student counselling service in a posh South Delhi neighborhood shared, “Since
Monday noon, after the news broke, I have received a call from at least six harried parents who were considering Canada as a college destination for their kids. They wanted to know if the current developments would interfere
On Nijjar Killing, US Says "Wanted To See India, Canada Cooperate But..."
New Delhi: The United States has called on India to cooperate with Canada's investigation into "extremely serious allegations" linking "agents" of the Indian government with the killing of Khalistani terrorist and Canadian citizen Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Vancouver in June last year.
At a press briefing in Washington, D.C. Tuesday, State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said the US had made it clear that Canada's allegations "need to be taken seriously". "When it comes to the Canadian matter, we have made clear the allegations are extremely serious. We wanted to see the Government of India cooperate with Canada... obviously they have not chosen that path," Mr Miller said in response to a US reporter's question on 'round two' of the Delhi-Ottawa crisis. The US - discreet since the row erupted in September last year - was similarly restrained Tuesday, only emphasising the need for cooperation between the two countries.
"I do not have any further comment beyond what the two countries have said publicly. We have urged them to cooperate and will continue to urge them to do so," Mr Miller said.
New Delhi has not yet responded to these comments but has repeatedly rejected the "absurd" and "motivated" allegations. Delhi has repeatedly asked for evidence and also pointed out the charges come as Mr Trudeau's popularity tanks before next year's general election.
Meanwhile, Mr Miller also underlined the strength of India-US relations.
with the decision of their kids to live and study in Canada.”
Shalini Sharma, a mother to a highschooler who has been preparing his college essays and building up portfolios to apply to a number of universities in Ontario says, “I don’t know if it will be a wise decision to send my son to Canada given the ongoing rift between the countries. What if the flights are suspended at some point or if the kids feel less secure. I am considering other options such as the UK, USA and Australia now.”
While this political tension may have led to anxiety amongst the student community, it is not just the Indian students who stand to be affected. If the relations are not mended sooner and this leads to a little bit of decrease in the student migration from India, Canada stands to lose economically. It is estimated that students from Punjab alone contribute significantly to the economy with their expenditure on education.
It may be noted that the ongoing year led to similar worries amongst Indian parents about sending their kids to US universities after a spate of unfortunate accidents and deaths amongst Indianorigin kids in American campuses made news. The incidents, though unrelated, created a bit of paranoia amongst Indians about the safety of their kids studying thousands of miles away. With the new developments the scare has come to haunt some students but they are hopeful that the tensions would dissipate leading them to plan their applications tension-free.

Expulsion of Indian diplomats necessary to dismantle ‘organised crime’, says Canada
Canada alleged a connection between Indian government agents and gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, who is accused of running a crime racket from Sabarmati jail, while not ruling out the demand for imposing sanctions on India
Canada on Monday said the expulsion of six Indian diplomats, including the high commissioner, was necessary to “disrupt and dismantle an organised criminal enterprise that represented a threat to the public safety of Canadians”.
Canada alleged a connection between Indian government agents and gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, who is accused of running a crime racket from Sabarmati jail, while not ruling out the demand for imposing sanctions on India. The need to disrupt and dismantle the network was a recurrent statement that came out of multiple offices in Canada — the Prime Minister’s Office, foreign ministry, ministry of public safety and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (the country’s national police) — through the day after diplomatic relations with India hit rock bottom following reciprocal expulsion of diplomats from both countries on Monday against the
backdrop of Ottawa naming six Indian diplomats as “persons of interest” in the murder of Khalistani activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
India did not officially respond to any of the remarks made in a series of media conferences in Ottawa but sources on Tuesday maintained that there was no truth in the Canadian contention that “credible evidence has been presented” to New Delhi.
Gandhis To Attend Omar Abdullah's Oath, Congress To Sit Out Of Government
New Delhi: The Congress will not be part of the new Jammu and Kashmir government - despite having allied with Chief Minister-elect Omar Abdullah's National Conference to win last month's election - sources told NDTV Wednesday morning. The party - which sources said also declined the offer of one ministerial berth in the incoming government - will offer support from the outside instead.
However, three senior leaders - Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge; Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition the Lok Sabha; and the party's General Secretary, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra - are expected at the swearing-in, which may also see eight ministers take oath with Mr Abdullah.

UK Associate of Bishnoi Ordered Hit on Comedian Faruqui
Behind the plot to target stand-up comedian Munawar Faruqui is a United Kingdom-based associate of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, who outsourced the hit to two men in Delhi, the probe by central intelligence agencies has found. Incidentally, it was another murder case — that of an Afghan gym owner
in Greater Kailash 1 on September 13 — that led the police to one of the shooters. The shooter, who had been recruited by UK-based gangster Rohit Godara, was arrested in a separate case by the Special Task Force in Haryana last month, and made the revelations during questioning.
According to police, following the murder of Afghan national Nadir Shah last month, police arrested 10 people and found that Bishnoi was behind this attack too. “While questioning the men, police found that some of them had also conducted a recce of a prominent hotel in New Friends Colony, but were not aware of their target at the time,” a source said.
“This is simply not true. From the very beginning, the Canadian approach has been to make vague accusations and put the burden of denial on India,” one of the sources said.
As was the case last year, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau led the charge, briefing the media along with foreign minister Melanie Joly and public safety minister Dominic Leblanc. “As the commissioner of the RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police), Mike Duheme, stated earlier today, the RCMP has clear and compelling evidence that agents of the Government of India have engaged in, and continue to engage in, activities that pose a significant threat to public safety,” Trudeau said at a media briefing. Trudeau added: “This includes clandestine informationgathering techniques, coercive behaviour targeting South Asian Canadians, and involvement in over a dozen threatening and violent acts, including murder. This is unacceptable.”
Maldives President Fires Over 225 Political Appointees To Cut Costs
Maldives: The Maldives president has sacked more than 225 political appointees, including ministers, in a bid to reduce the cash-strapped Indian Ocean nation's expenditure, his office said on Tuesday. Mohamed Muizzu ordered the removal of those he appointed after coming to power last year as the small but strategically located nation struggles to stave off a debt crisis. "This significant reduction in political appointments aligns with the president's broader efforts to streamline government operations and ensure more efficient use of public funds," a statement from Muizzu's office said.
EVMs Can't Be Hacked Like Pagers: Poll Body Chief
New Delhi: Dismissing allegations of 'varying EVM battery levels', Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar said Electronic Voting Machines are totally "safe and robust," and have batteries like a calculator, not like a mobile which will be charged everyday.
CEC Kumar explained that EVMs had three-layered security including the batteries and in each level signatures of political party representatives were taken to ensure transparency.

Combination poser for Team India against New Zealand in three-Test series in Bangalore
HiIndia Newsdesk
India had the scope of preparing turners to strengthen their No.1 position in the World Test Championship standings against a struggling New Zealand in the three-Test series beginning in Bengaluru on Wednesday.
For a side that came a cropper even against unheralded Sri Lankan spinners on their previous tour, it could be gruelling if India decide to include a third spinner in the form of Kuldeep Yadav alongside Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja in the playing XI.
However, with rain in Bengaluru disrupting both teams’ preparations leading up to the opening Test and likely to play spoilsport during the course of the game, India may have to rethink their combination.
Overcast conditions mean assistance for quicks, which may then prompt the team management to continue with three pacers and two spinners, as it was during the recent Bangladesh Tests.
Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep will join spearhead Jasprit Bumrah to form the pace attack, with Ashwin and Jadeja taking care of the spin department. Not to say that India would mind seam-friendly conditions as their fast bowling group looks much more organised at present
Lakshya Sen, Malvika Bansod make first-round exits at Denmark Open
India's Lakshya Sen battled hard against China's Lu Guang Zu but ultimately lost in three games to make an early exit from the Denmark Open Super 750 badminton tournament here on Tuesday.
Lakshya, a 2021 World championship bronze medallist, squandered an opening game advantage, losing 21-12 19-21 14-21 to Lu in a men's singles opening round match which lasted 70 minutes.
The 22-year-old from Almora, who finished fourth at the Paris Olympics, had previously lost in the second round of the Arctic Open in Finland last week.
Malvika Bansod, who had reached the quarterfinals at China Open, also couldn't cross the opening hurdle, going down to Vietnam's Nguyen Thuy Linh 13-21 12-21 in women's singles.
Panda sisters -- Rutaparna and Swetaparna -- also made a first-round exit after losing 18-21 22-24 against Chinese Taipei's Chang Ching Hui and Yang Ching Tun in women's doubles.
With rain disrupting both teams’ preparations leading up to opening Test and likely to play spoilsport during course of game
than that of the visitors.
Also, with just over a month left for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, it will present both the quicks as well as the batters an opportunity for a solid workout in seam-friendly conditions
before facing Australia. For New Zealand, such conditions should be of some relief at least as quicks Tim Southee and Will O’Rourkee will have a chance to exploit the new ball. No matter how the surface behaves, the coming series will be a Herculean task for the Black Caps’ batting group, especially in the absence of former captain Kane Williamson, who’s racing to be fit for the second Test after sustaining a groin injury.
Not just Williamson’s absence, but the knee injury to Ben Sears, who was one
Jannik Sinner Wins Shanghai Masters To Deny Novak Djokovic 100th Career Title
World number one Jannik Sinner defeated 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic 7-6 (7/4), 6-3 on Sunday to win the Shanghai Masters. Sinner took a crucial break in the fourth game of the second set to defeat the Serb in 1hr 37min and deny him a 100th career singles title. "He was just too good today, too strong, too fast," said Djokovic after the match. Sinner saluted his opponent as a "legend" who kept playing "incredible tennis... year after year". In a nod to former Djokovic rival Roger Federer, who was watching from the stands, the 23-year-old joked: "There are legends everywhere, I just try to keep up a little bit." Facing off before
of the four frontline fast bowlers in New Zealand’s Test squad for the India tour, has pushed the visitors into a deeper hole. Jacob Duffy, uncapped in Tests, was named as Sears’ replacement. India may also need to reshuffle their combination outside the bowling group. No.3 batter Shubman Gill has a stiff neck which casts a bit of doubt on his availability. If Gill misses out, Sarfaraz Khan appears to be the favourite to take his spot, although the latter will most likely continue to bat in the middle order. KL Rahul, in that case, could bat at No.3. In other words, the momentum is very much with India, who are on a roll with six Test wins on the trot. Precisely, there isn’t much cause to worry for captain Rohit Sharma and head coach Gautam Gambhir as they can afford to focus more on their style and approach as per the game situation.
That said, they would be even more relieved if Virat Kohli gets a few big scores and dominates the rival bowling attack before the Australia Tests. Kohli’s diehard fanbase may keep pointing out that he has two centuries in his last eight Test appearances. But those couple of instances aside, the former skipper has looked circumspect, particularly in conditions having some assistance for bowlers — both quicks and spinners.
IOA Ignores Our Suggestions: Athletes' Chief Mary Kom
Boxing great M C Mary Kom, who is also the chairperson of IOA's athletes' commission, says she has stopped giving suggestions to the National Olympic Committee as it doesn't pay attention to them.
Mary Kom were among 10 elite sportspersons who were elected on the IOA athletes' commission back in November 2022.
an impassioned crowd, neither player blinked in the first set, unable to break the other's serve.
In the tiebreak Sinner quickly took control, breaking Djokovic's serve on the first point and going 5-1 up.
The Serb steadied himself but then netted a volley to bring up set point at 6-3.
Sinner failed to convert initially but didn't miss the second time behind serve. The next key moment came in the fourth game of the second set, when Sinner was up 40-15 on Djokovic's serve. Djokovic saved one break point with a fiery ace, but couldn't stop a superb forehand down the line from Sinner that saw him pull ahead.
The IOA is currently witnessing intense infighting with a section of the officebearers questioning the governance of president P T Usha, who has denied all allegations against her.
"I am not into the IOA functioning. We shared so many things with IOA but they don't listen to it. I have a voice but they don't listen to what I suggest. I don't know politics and I don't want to blame anyone," Mary Kom told PTI when asked about the ongoing power struggle in the IOA.
The boxers returned without a medal from the Paris Olympics and Mary Kom was terribly disappointed at that outcome. The 41-year-old lamented that nobody in the Boxing Federation of India sought her help ahead of the Olympics.

Boeing seeks up to $35bn as costly strike drags on
HiIndia Newsdesk
Boeing says it aims to raise up to $35bn (£26.8bn) from investors and banks as a costly strike by thousands of its workers enters its second month.
Also on Tuesday, the union representing more than 30,000 of the aviation giant's workers held a rally in the city of Seattle. The company is moving ahead with plans to lay off around 17,000 workers, with the first redundancy notices expected to be issued in mid-November. Talks to end the walkout collapsed last week as the firm withdrew an offer that included a 30% pay rise over four years. Boeing plans to raise up to $25bn in stock and debt offerings and said it had reached a deal with major banks to borrow as much much as $10bn.
"These are two prudent steps to support the company’s access to liquidity," Boeing said in a statement.
The company's shares rose by 2.2% after the announcements.
Google turns to nuclear to power AI data centres
Google has signed a deal to use small nuclear reactors to generate the vast amounts of energy needed to power its artificial intelligence (AI) data centres. The company says the agreement with Kairos Power will see it start using the first reactor this decade and bring more online by 2035.
The companies did not give any details about how much the deal is worth or where the plants will be built. Technology firms are increasingly turning to nuclear sources of energy to supply the electricity used by the huge data centres that drive AI.
The moves to raise new funding came just days after Boeing announced it would cut its workforce by 10% and said it expected to record a loss for the last three months.
BBC News understands that the layoffs will, for now, not affect striking workers.
The redundancies will be compulsory and workers will be offered severance payments.
The company also said deliveries of its 777X planes would be delayed by a year. Boeing is due to release its quarterly results on 23 October.
American equal pay icon Lilly Ledbetter dies aged 86
Lilly Ledbetter, whose name graces an equal pay law in the US, has died aged 86. CBS, the BBC's news partner in the US, quoted her children as saying she died peacefully on Saturday surrounded by family and loved ones.
"Our mother lived an extraordinary life," added a family statement.
Ms Ledbetter's activism led to the first bill signed into law by Barack Obama after he became US president in 2009.
The Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Restoration Act made it easier for workers to sue after discovering they were being
discriminated through pay.
Mr Obama said that the law sent the message "that there are no second-class citizens in our workplaces".
President Biden, who was vice-president during the Obama administration, described Ms Ledbetter as a "fearless leader and advocate for equal pay".
He paid tribute, saying "her fight began on the factory floor and reached the Supreme Court and Congress" and she "never stopped fighting for all Americans to be paid what they deserve".
"Before she was a household name, Lilly was like so many other women in the workforce: she worked hard, with dignity, only to find out she was being paid less than a man for the same work."
Biden added it was "an honour to stand with Lilly as the bill that bears her name was made law", describing the Fair Pay Restoration Act as a "critical step forward in the fight to close the gender and racial wage gaps".
Lufthansa hit with record penalty after barring Jewish passengers
The US has hit Lufthansa with a record $4m (3m) penalty after the airline barred Jewish passengers from a 2022 flight because some allegedly refused to follow rules requiring face masks.
The Department of Transportation said Lufthansa discriminated against the passengers, treating them "as if they were all a single group", though many were not travelling together and did not know one another.
It said the penalty was the largest it had ever issued against an airline for civil rights violations.
Lufthansa said in the consent order that it was agreeing to the payment to avoid litigation but denied discrimination, blaming the incident on "an unfortunate series of inaccurate communications".
Interest rate cut hopes raised as wage growth slows
HiIndia Newsdesk
Expectations that UK interest rates will be cut in November have risen after wage growth slowed to its lowest pace for more than two years. Pay grew at 4.9% between June and August, official statistics show, down from 5.1% previously. The figures have added to widespread expectations that UK interest rates could be cut to 4.75% when the Bank of England meets next month. Pay is still rising faster than inflation - which measures the rate of price increases - but analysts do not expect that to delay any rate cut plans by the Bank. The Bank of England watches wage growth closely.

James Cameron told me Shikara reminded him of Doctor Zhivago: Vidhu Vinod Chopra
Filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s Shikara may not have been a box office success but it managed to strike a chord with Oscarwinning director James Cameron who was reminded of his favourite film Doctor Zhivago when he saw the Hindi movie. The 12th Fail director was speaking at a session on the day one of IFP Season 14, where he recalled bonding with the Avatar filmmaker over a glass of wine. Shikara followed the love story of a Kashmiri couple against the backdrop of the exodus of Kashmiri Pandits in the 1990s. Chopra said his team asked him if he had read about the reaction to the 2020 film on social media but he was focused on his next project.

NCP leader and former Maharashtra MLA Baba Siddique was shot dead by the Lawrence gang on October 12. Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma reacted on social media, sharing a note on X.
He wrote, "A lawyer turned gangster wants to avenge a deer’s death by killing a superstar. He commands his 700-member gang, recruited via Facebook, to kill a prominent politician who’s the superstar's close friend. But the police can't catch him as he's in jail under government protection. If any Bollywood writer pitched this story, people would call it absurd and unbelievable."
In his second tweet, Ram Gopal Varma wrote, "In 1998, when the deer was killed, Lawrence Bishnoi was just a 5-year-old. Yet, he stayed angry for 25 years, and now at 30, claims his life's mission is to kill Salman Khan to avenge the deer's death. Is this the height of animal love or some bizarre joke by God?"

Shridhar's "Coolest Collab" for Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 Track
James Cameron saw the film in New Zealand, he walked up to me and said, ‘This film reminds me of my favourite film in the world, ‘Doctor Zhivago’,” he said, referring to the 1965 love story set in war-struck Russia. Cameron isn’t much of a drinker but he and Chopra sat in a cinema hall for a drink.
“Three bottles of wine were arranged for us. He was in the middle of shooting ‘Avatar’ (sequel) and we drank till early hours of morning. That for me is success. Your success or failure comes from you. You need to do your best, if your best is not good enough, don’t worry, do it again,” Chopra said on Saturday.
The filmmaker said he plans to re-release Shikara next year with its original title Love Letter from Kashmir.
Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 is set to feature the “biggest music collab" of 2024. Diljit Dosanjh, American rapper Pitbull, and the "OG" singer Neeraj Shridhar are joining forces to create magic for the movie's title track. How do we know? The film's lead actor, Kartik Aaryan, revealed the exciting news by sharing a teaser of the song on Instagram. The full track will be out tomorrow, October 15. The video kicks off with the iconic tunes from the first instalment of the Bhool Bhulaiyaa franchise. Soon, we hear Diljit's energetic voice. Then, Pitbull chimes in with the line, "Let's take the world on fire." And as if that was not enough, Kartik Aaryan's killer dance moves add the perfect finishing touch. The music for this song is composed by Tanishk
Bagchi and Pritam, with lyrics penned by Dhrruv Yogi, Sameer and Pitbull. In his caption, Kartik Aaryan wrote, “Rooh Baba goes Global with the Coolest Collab DILJIT x PITBULL N the OG NEERAJ Get Ready for the #SpookySlide.”
Directed by Anees Bazmee, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 is set to release on November 1, the same day Rohit Shetty's Singham Again hits the big screens. Kartik Aaryan recently opened up about this highly anticipated box-office clash. He said, "It's not a versus between the two films; they are part of significant franchises, and I have great admiration for everyone involved. Ye jo versus chalu hua hai, ye bahut galat hai (This versus debate that has started, it's wrong.)"

India, Canada expel each other’s seniormost diplomats over Nijjar murder row
The day's developments, which have plunged bilateral ties to an all-time low, began with India announcing in the evening that it would withdraw Verma and the others named by Canada
India and Canada expelled each other's senior diplomats on Monday after Ottawa named Indian high commissioner Sanjay Kumar Verma and others as "persons of interest" in the investigation into the assassination of Khalistani activist H.S. Nijjar. The expulsions marked a new low in bilateral relations. India announced it would withdraw Verma and others named by Canada. Later, six Canadian diplomats, including chargé d'affaires Stewart Wheeler, were expelled from India and asked to leave by Saturday. Canada reportedly expelled six Indian diplomats involved in intelligence gathering on Sikh separatists. India rejected Canada’s claims as
"baseless," accusing the Trudeau government of using the issue for political gain and asserting it reserved the right to take further action. The dispute followed Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s 2022 allegation in the House of Commons of Indian involvement in Nijjar’s murder, a charge India denies. Despite requests, Canada has not provided evidence, leading India to accuse Canada of smearing
3 Economists Get Nobel
Prize For Study On Institutions And Prosperity
US-based academics Daron Acemoglu, Simon Johnson and James Robinson won the 2024 Nobel economics prize "for studies of how institutions are formed and affect prosperity", the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said on Monday.
The prestigious award, formally known as the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of
Alfred Nobel, is the final prize to be given out this year and is worth 11 million Swedish crowns ($1.1 million).
"Reducing the vast differences in income between countries is one of our time's greatest challenges. The laureates have demonstrated the importance of societal institutions for achieving this," said Jakob Svensson, Chair of the Committee for the Prize in Economic Sciences.
"Societies with a poor rule of law and institutions that exploit the population do not generate growth or change for the better," the award organisers added on their website.
Daron Acemoglu and Simon Johnson work at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, while James Robinson is at the University of Chicago.
Acemoglu and Johnson recently collaborated on a book surveying technology through the ages which demonstrated how some technological advances were better at creating jobs and spreading wealth than others.
its reputation for political purposes. The controversy extends to broader tensions, including Trudeau’s past comments on India’s internal issues and alleged Canadian support for separatist groups. India’s Ministry of External Affairs highlighted long-standing grievances, including unresolved extradition requests and threats to Indian diplomats in Canada. Amid the diplomatic standoff, an Indian inquiry committee is set to arrive in Washington to investigate allegations of a foiled assassination plot against Sikh separatist leader Gurpatwant Singh Pannun. Only one constable was accompanying NCP leader Baba Siddique when he was shot dead in Mumbai's Bandra area on October 12 by three persons who took cover of Dussehra fireworks to open fire, a police official said on Monday. Trudeau Doubles Down On Charges After India-Canada Diplomatic Showdown
Delhi: Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Tuesday accused the Indian government of "coercive behaviour and threatening and violent acts", as the two countries announced tit-for-tat expulsions of diplomats following the killing of a Khalistani terrorist. During a press conference, Mr Trudeau said New Delhi's "fundamental error" was "unacceptable" as tensions reached new heights over the 2023 murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Canadian citizen. Calling the expulsion "additional steps to protect Canadians", Mr Trudeau echoed the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP)'s claim that "agents of the Government of India have engaged in, and continue to engage in, activities that pose a significant threat to public safety".
Trudeau's allegations coincide with sliding support and tanking popularity ratings, and two electoral losses ahead of next year's elections.
Mr Trudeau also urged India to cooperate with the investigation, to recognize the evidence shared in the murder case so far and asserted that "extrajudicial operations abroad will henceforth be unequivocally aligned with international law".
India has repeatedly denied the charges
Trudeau urged India to cooperate with the investigation into the killing of a Sikh separatist leader, and to recognize evidence shared in the case
and claimed Canada has not shared any evidence in this regard.
New Delhi yesterday hit back at Canada over pursuing its diplomats as "persons of interest" in its investigation, calling their allegations "preposterous" and a "strategy of smearing India for political gains". India has been maintaining that the main issue has been that of Canada giving space to pro-Khalistani elements operating from Canadian soil with impunity.

Devesh Mahla said.
Meanwhile, Wangchuk said in a video message that the Delhi Police detained several of their supporters, as he questioned why Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) which prohibits unauthorised gatherings is permanently enforced in New Delhi. "Many people came here today to observe a silent protest. It is really sad that they were detained by Delhi Police. It is sad because in world's largest democracy, we can't even hold a silent protest," Wangchuk said in the message. "We have been told that Section 163 has been enforced... It is sad that the mother of democracy has such a restriction imposed all through the year. This section is usually enforced temporarily only where there is a chance of law and order getting disrupted," Wangchuk added.

New Delhi: The Lawrence Bishnoi gang has not only claimed responsibility for the murder of Baba Siddique but also threatened that anyone who helps actor Salman Khan, near whose house it has already fired warning shots, will be in its crosshairs.
Soon after Mr Siddique, a three-time MLA and former Maharashtra minister, was killed near the office of his son, MLA Zeeshan Siddique, in Bandra East on Saturday night, speculation began swirling of a Bishnoi gang link to the daring crime. This was confirmed on Sunday after a post on Facebook by one

Shubuu Lonkar, believed to be Bishnoi gang associate Shubham Rameshwar Lonkar, claiming responsibility. While Lonkar is in jail, police said the post was made by his brother Pravin Lonkar, who was arrested on Sunday evening.
In the post, Lonkar claimed that Siddique had been killed because he was linked to India's most wanted terrorist Dawood Ibrahim, was close to Salman Khan and because of the death of Anuj Thapan, one of the arrested suspects in the shooting outside
Mr Khan's house, in police custody. Thapan was found dead on May 1 inside the Mumbai Crime Branch lock-up. The police had said he died by suicide but his family had claimed he was tortured in custody. "We do not have any enmity with anyone but whoever helps Salman Khan and the Dawood gang, keep your accounts in order ('hisab-kitaab kar lena')," Lonkar wrote in Hindi in the Facebook post. Police said they are verifying the authenticity of the post. Officials said patrolling has been increased in the Malabar Hill area and some points have also been blocked.

US Urges Israel
to
Halt Fire on UN Peacekeepers in Lebanon
US President Joe Biden has said he is "absolutely, positively" urging Israel to stop firing at UN peacekeepers during its conflict with Hezbollah in Lebanon, following two incidents in 48 hours. On Friday, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said its troops were responsible for the incident.

India has expressed grave "concern" over the abysmal conflict situation in West Asia as Israel intensifies its resolve targeting Hezbollah hideouts.
New Delhi issued a statement today after UN peacekeepers stationed in south Lebanon came under fire from Israeli forces.
Among the UN peacekeepers stationed in Lebanon, there are approximately 900 Indian soldiers. It is important to note that they were not at the United Nations Interim Force In Lebanon or UNIFIL headquarters at the time it was attacked by Israeli forces. Besides
the soldiers, there are around 25 staff officers, including medical experts deployed there.
"We are concerned at the deteriorating security situation along the Blue Line," the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement, adding that "We continue to monitor the situation very closely."
New Delhi underscored the importance it attaches to United Nations' peacekeeping initiatives saying UN premises cannot be allowed to be targeted, and respecting its sanctity is a mandate.
"Inviolability of UN premises must be respected by all, and appropriate measures taken to ensure the safety of UN peacekeepers and the sanctity of their mandate," the foreign ministry said.
Israel however, has defended its actions, with the Israeli Defense Forces or IDF claiming that "Since the beginning of the war, Hezbollah has fired more than 130 rockets in close proximity" to 26 United Nations facilities."

Fort Pierce, United States: At least 11 people died as Hurricane Milton sent tornadoes spinning across Florida, officials said Thursday as the state grappled with flooding, power outages and other issues from a milder than expected storm that many had feared would be catastrophic. The hurricane blasted across the state late Wednesday before roaring into the Atlantic, leaving behind roads blocked by downed trees and power lines. It shredded the roof of a baseball stadium. How gene therapy can stop growth of cancer cells
HiIndia Newsdesk
Cancer, as we all know, happens when there’s a change in or damage to genes in cells, which then cannot function normally or tell the cells when to start and stop growing. “That’s why cancer can be treated only one way, the right way, the very first time, to help patients achieve longer and better lives,” says radiation and medical oncologist Dr B S Ajaikumar. And how best to do it ? “Get a deeper insight into the patient’s genetic make-up that can show why he/ she has become resistant to certain treatments for cancer, then adjust therapies and stay ahead of the disease,” says the doctor who is making a strong case of genomics (the study of genes) to pave the way for precision and personalized medicine.
What is precision therapy in cancer?
Precision therapy, also referred to as personalized medicine, involves tailoring cancer treatment to the individual characteristics of each patient. This approach uses a patient’s genetic makeup to guide the selection of targeted treatments, which tend to be more effective and have fewer side effects than traditional therapies. The goal of precision therapy is to target specific genetic mutations that are driving cancer growth, delivering the right treatment to the right patient at the right time.
How can genomics improve personalized medicine?
Genomics is the comprehensive study of a person’s genes and their interactions. It helps identify the genetic mutations and alterations that cause cancer cells to grow and spread. Understanding these specific mutations allows for a more accurate selection of therapies that directly target cancerdriving genes while minimising harm to normal cells.
How can genomics help identify genetic changes that cause cancer?
Cancer is often driven by genetic changes like mutations, deletions, or duplications in specific genes. Genomic analysis enables us to sequence the tumor’s DNA and compare it with normal DNA to pinpoint mutations linked to cancer development. Once we identify these genetic drivers, we can target them with therapies. For instance, mutations in the EGFR (epidermal growth factor receptor) or the ALK (anaplastic lymphoma kinase) gene in lung cancer can be treated using targeted drugs like EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitors or ALK inhibitors. How can it help prescribe targeted therapies?
Genomics helps identify genetic alterations that
make cancer cells susceptible to certain drugs. Targeted therapies are specifically designed to work on proteins driving cancer. By profiling a patient’s tumor at the genetic level, we can prescribe therapies that directly address the cancer’s underlying mutations. Genomic testing may also uncover rare mutations for which existing drugs, already used for other cancer types, can be repurposed to treat the patient more effectively.
How can genomics help in predicting the risk of cancer?
Genomic testing can detect inherited mutations that increase a person’s risk of developing cancer. For example, mutations in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes are known to elevate the risk of breast and ovarian cancer. Early identification of these mutations allows for proactive monitoring and preventive measures, including surgeries if necessary.
But gene testing is not yet affordable or accessible?
Accessibility of the test is not an issue. But the cost is steep. As volumes increase, the cost will come down. The problem is not with the initial investment but reagent costs. Some validation studies are going on with in-house reagents. I hope in a few years this will be a routine procedure that can cost under Rs 10,000.

The United States filed a civil complaint on September 27 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of California, alleging that the company, its president Edwin Rizo, and CFO Tomas Rizo violated the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. The Modesto-based facility produced various dairy products under several brands, including Tio Francisco, Don Francisco, and 365 Whole Foods Market.
The complaint followed the discovery of Listeria monocytogenes in cheese products by Hawaiian state health officials and subsequent FDA inspections revealing unsanitary conditions at the facility. A genetic analysis linked the strain to a listeriosis outbreak that affected 26 people across 11 states, resulting in 23 hospitalizations and two deaths.
The CDC linked the outbreak to the company’s facility, prompting a recall of all its cheese and dairy products in February.
The company agreed to settle the lawsuit, with a consent decree permanently enjoining them from violating the law. They must notify the FDA before resuming operations and comply with strict remedial measures. The case highlights the government's commitment to enforcing food safety regulations.

Legal Battle Over DACA Continues in Appeals Court Hearing
TEXAS- A federal appeals court is deliberating the fate of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which protects over 535,000 undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S. as children. Texas and other Republicanled states seek to end the program, claiming it imposes financial burdens through increased costs for healthcare and education. Texas argues that terminating DACA would alleviate these expenses by encouraging recipients to leave the U.S.
The Biden administration, alongside DACA recipients, is defending the program’s legality, asserting that Texas lacks the standing to sue. They also request that current enrollees retain their protections, even if the court halts new applications. This legal defense follows a recent Supreme Court decision that ruled Texas did not have standing in a similar immigration case.
The case is being heard by a panel of three judges, and a ruling against DACA could lead to an appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court, which previously blocked efforts by the Trump administration to terminate the program. Vice President Kamala Harris reaffirmed her support for DACA, urging Congress to pass a pathway to citizenship for Dreamers.

And so, began my career in community pharmacy.”
She also said, “As your incoming President, I will continue our strategic plan and goal of unifying the profession by inspiring more pharmacy professionals in our state to get involved with CPA, especially those from the community setting.
