Those paying $19.99 per month for its Premium plan will have to shell out $22.99. The average interest rate on the typical 30-year, fixed rate home loan rose to 8% for the first time since 2000, according to Mortgage News Daily, which tracks rates. The US central bank, the Federal Reserve, has been raising interest rates to try to bring down inflation. That has pushed up borrowing costs. Rates are up by nearly half a percentage point in just the last two weeks. The last two years has seen a ratcheting up of interest rates, the most common strategy from central banks to curb how fast prices rise. But in recent weeks, mortgage rates
have also been affected by big swings in demand for US government debt, which is sold to investors in the form of US Treasuries. Political chaos in Washington and rising US debt levels raised doubts about investors' ongoing appetite for buying US debt. That prompted prices of Treasuries to fall, boosting yields - moves that have hit mortgage rates as well. Matthew Graham of Mortgage News Daily said markets were "increasingly willing to react" to events that were likely to have implications for government borrowing. He said that the latest jump in mortgage rates may have been sparked by President Joe Biden's speech in Israel calling for "big spending on overseas war efforts".

The company already offers drone deliveries in two US states for goods weighing no more than 5lbs (2.2kg). The aviation regulator said "exploring" how drones could be safely used in more of the UK's airspace was "key". Amazon said it was working closely with the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) to meet regulations, while the government said the move would help it understand "how to best use the new technology safely and securely". David Carbon, vice president of Amazon Prime Air, said he believed there was demand for the technology in the UK and that it was "absolutely safe".

The foodgrain production during 202223 is also higher by 308.69 lakh tonnes than the average of the previous five years’ (2017-18 to 2021-22). Jaswinder Bhangoo, an Indian American man from Bakersfield, California has pleaded guilty to stealing $163,750 in Covid-19 relief money. Between May 2020 and November 2021, Bhangoo, applied for over $250,000 in
Covid-19 relief loans from the US Small Business Administration. He falsely represented that he owned multiple businesses with several employees and revenues. He made another misrepresentation that he had not been convicted of a felony in the previous five years. Bhangoo was in fact convicted of insurance fraud in the past. His false representations resulted in some of his loan applications getting approved. He received approximately $163,750 in federal funds. Bhangoo now faces a maximum statutory penalty of 10 years in prison and a fine of $250,000.

New York: (IANS) The Sikh mayor of a city in the US state of New Jersey has said that he has received a series of hatefilled letters via email threatening to kill him and his family if he doesn't resign, a media report said. Ravi Bhalla, who became the first Sikh to be elected as the Mayor of Hoboken City in November 2017, told CBS News on Tuesday that the first letter, which was sent more than a year ago, called on him to resign. While the second letter threatened his life, it was the third letter, which came soon after the second, that shook Bhalla and his family. "This is your last warning. If you don't resign immediately, we will kill you, we'll kill your wife, we'll kill your children," the contents of the third letter read. Another letter read, "it's time to kill you", the news report said, adding that the rest of the content was too disturbing to share. "There was a lot of angst, anger, a lot of hate, combined with actual threats upon my life and the life of my children and my wife," Bhalla, living in Hoboken since 22 years, said. The law enforcement agencies have provided Bhalla with 24-hour security, including for his two children, aged 15 and 11, at school. Born and raised in New Jersey, Bhalla told CBS News that during the same time, his neighbours, his brother and a few city colleagues also began receiving packages with sexually-explicit and threatening materials. While the person responsible for those was caught and charged, the person behind the threatening letters is still at large, acording to Bhalla. MONROE, NJ- The Indo-American Cultural Foundation of Central Jersey (IACFNJ) hosted their Grand Navratri Garba celebration on October 13-14, 2023, at Monroe Township High School in Monroe, NJ, marking the first time at this location. Two thousand people attended the event, which celebrated the Hindu festival of Navratri, dedicated to Goddess Durga, Lakshmi, and Saraswati. Navratri spans nine nights, during which Hindus believe that Goddess Durga destroys evil tendencies, Goddess Lakshmi instills divine qualities, and Goddess Saraswati imparts knowledge. The tenth day, Vijay Dashami, signifies the victory of good over evil. This year, IACFNJ held the Garba in Monroe due to its large Indian community. Residents from surrounding towns, including South and North Brunswick, Franklin Park, Somerset, Princeton, Hightstown, Princeton Junction, Monroe, East Brunswick, Robbinsville, East and West Windsor, attended. An elementary school in Texas now bears the name of an Indian American, well known in the community for her service and volunteer work. The Sonal Bhuchar Elementary School in Missouri has been officially dedicated to the memory of an Indian-American trailblazer. Bhuchar passed away in 2019 at the age of 58 after a battle with cancer. Situated in Missouri City, Texas, the school carries her name as a memory to a woman who was not just on the Fort Bend Independent School District
Board of Trustees but made a difference with her work for organizations like Child Advocates, the Literacy Council, the Cultural Arts Foundation, and the Fort Bend Education Foundation. Sonal was on the Fort Bend ISD Board of Trustees, during which she held the position of Board President for two years. In 2015, Texas Governor Greg Abbott appointed Sonal to the One Star National Service Commission Board. Sonal immigrated to the US in the 1980s with her husband. She left behind a lovely legacy.

A Sikh man traveling on an MTA bus in Queens, NY was harassed by another man as he hurled racism remarks on him. The incident occurred on a shuttle bus at around 9:00 am on Sunday near 118th Street and Liberty Avenue near Richmond Hill. According to reports a 19-year-ol Sikh man was riding in the bus when another man approached him. According to the police, the suspect told the victim: “We don’t wear that in this country,” referring to his turban. The suspect then went on to punch the Sikh man several times and even tried to remove the turban. Soon after this the suspect got off the bus and ran away. The police have released the images of the suspect and are investigating the case.

A total of 65 hair dryers were seized, amounting to an estimated manufacturer’s suggested retail price of approximately $19,500. SAN ANTONIO, TX- A federal court in Texas has ordered a San Antonio pharmacy, Rite-Away Pharmacy & Medical Supply #2, and its pharmacistowner, Jitendra Chaudhary, to pay a $275,000 civil penalty. This penalty comes as a result of a civil complaint filed by the government on January 21, 2022. The court’s order also imposes restrictions on their dispensing of opioids and other controlled substances. Delaware based BioTek reMEDys Inc. a specialty pharmacy that offers drugs and infusion services, has agreed collectively to pay $20 million to resolve allegations that they violated the False Claims Act by paying kickbacks to patients and physicians to protect its revenue stream. The pharmacy is headed by Indian American Chaitanya Gadde who is the CEO of the company. According to allegations from August 2015 through May 2020, BioTek routinely waived the copayments of Medicare and TRICARE patients to induce those patients to purchase its drugs and services. According to the Department of Justice many of those drugs were expensive and required patients to pay large copays. The company “sought to avoid deterring patients from purchasing its drugs and services by engaging in a scheme, orchestrated and implemented by Gadde and others, to routinely waive these large copays, without regard for whether the patients were experiencing financial hardship.”

27-year-old Nepali man, Manish Kunwar was found dead in Rikers Island jail under mysterious circumstances. Kunwar was found unresponsive and was declared dead. While a city medical examiner will be examining the cause of death, the family and friends of Kunwar are finding his sudden death mysterious. Kunway came to the U.S. from Nepal in 2016 on a diversity visa. He was arraigned late last month and was in custody at Rikers just for seven days before he was found dead. Kunwar was extradited from Delaware and was facing two bail-jumping charges for robbery and grand larceny. Before this, he had also spent five months in a psychiatric facility in Baltimore. There are also reports that he was homeless and mentally ill. The Legal Aid Society said: “If our client had access to the services he needed and stable housing, today’s tragedy could have been avoided. The carceral system is no place for people struggling with mental or substance abuse issues, and all criminal legal system stakeholders must pursue alternatives that prioritize community-based resources over the confines of a cage.”

WASHINGTON, DC- U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services has received enough petitions to reach the congressionally mandated cap on H-2B visas for temporary nonagricultural workers for the first half of fiscal year (FY) 2024. Oct. 11, 2023 was the final receipt date for new cap-subject H-2B worker petitions requesting an employment start date before April 1, 2024. USCIS will reject new cap-subject H-2B petitions received after Oct. 11, 2023 that request an employment start date before April 1, 2024. USCIS continues to accept H-2B petitions that are exempt from the congressionally mandated cap. This includes petitions for: • Current H-2B workers in the United States who extend their stay, change employers, or change the terms and conditions of their employment; • Fish roe processors, fish roe technicians, and/or supervisors of fish roe processing; and Workers performing labor or services in the Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands and/or Guam from Nov. 28, 2009, until Dec. 31, 2029. • U.S. businesses use the H-2B program to employ foreign workers for temporary nonagricultural jobs. Currently, Congress has set the H-2B cap at 66,000 per fiscal year, with 33,000 for workers who begin employment in the first half of the fiscal year (Oct. 1 – March 31) and 33,000 (plus any unused numbers from the first half of the fiscal year) for workers who begin employment in the second half of the fiscal year (April 1 – Sept. 30).
The Securities and Exchange Commission has obtained a temporary restraining order, asset freeze, and other emergency relief to halt an ongoing fraud of a whopping sum of $130 million targeting the Indian American community. It has been found that the fraud is allegedly conducted by Nanban Ventures LLC, and its three founders namely -- Gopala Krishnan, Manivannan Shanmugam, and Sakthivel Palani Gounder. The SEC’s complaint alleges that the defendants raised more than $89 million from more than 350 investors for investments in purported venture capital funds. The founders managed these funds through Nanban Ventures LLC. More than $39 million was raised from 10 investors that invested directly in the three other entities controlled by the founders. The founders overstated the profitability of the investments and paid investors at least $17.8 million in fake profits that were Ponzi payments. It shows how people prioritise physical features and behaviours in determining preferences for short-term and long-term mates. For the study, sampled the preferences of 394 women, identifying as either heterosexual or bisexual, at a large public university. Low muscle mass is associated with a two-fold risk of death from cardiovascular disease in individuals with diabetes, finds a study. The study showed that the association is independent of frailty, glycaemic control and the microvascular complications retinopathy (damage to the blood vessels of the retina) and nephropathy (kidney disease). Sarcopenia -- age-related loss of muscle mass and strength -- was known to be associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD) and mortality in individuals with diabetes. However, it wasn’t clear to what extent the relationship was being influenced by their blood sugar control or by complications of their diabetes. The research presented at the recent Annual Meeting of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) showed that people with low muscle mass were 44 per cent more likely to die of any cause during follow-up than those with normal muscle mass. They were also twice as likely to die from CVD as those with normal muscle mass. Further analysis showed that low muscle mass was linked with all-cause mortality and CVD mortality, irrespective of HbA1c (a measure of blood sugar control) and microvascular complications. “Our results suggest that the increased risk of death in individuals with diabetes who have low muscle mass isn’t mediated or influenced by frailty, poor blood sugar control or microvascular complications but due to the loss of muscle itself," Dr Jae Myung Yu and Dr Shinje Moon, from the Hallym University, in Seoul, Republic of South Korea.
