US launches airstrike on site in Syria in US Approves $320M of Advanced Kits response to attacks by Iranian-backed militias Sale to Israel HiIndia Newsdesk
The U.S. launched an airstrike on a facility in eastern Syria linked to Iranian-backed militias, in retaliation for what has been a growing number of attacks on bases housing U.S. troops in the region for the past several weeks, the Pentagon said. The strike by two U.S. F-15 fighter jets was on a weapons storage facility linked to Iran's Revolutionary Guard. “The President has no higher priority than the safety of U.S. personnel, and he directed today's action to make clear that the United States will defend itself, its personnel, and its interests,” Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said in a statement. This is the second time in less than two weeks that the U.S. has bombed facilities used by the militant groups, many operating under the umbrella of the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, which U.S. officials say have carried out at least 40 such attacks since Oct. 17.

Sixteen alleged leaders and associates of the Gambino crime family have been arrested in the US and Italy, American prosecutors said on Tuesday. The charges against them include racketeering, extortion, witness retaliation, conspiracy and fraud. Ten were arrested in the New York area and six by Italian authorities in Palermo in Sicily. Another suspect is still at large, according to the US Department of Justice. The US-based suspects were due to appear in court in New York on Wednesday.
its intelligence assessment found that Tel Aviv was not to blame. But the Israeli military has continued a ferocious assault on Hamas, with ground troops now deep inside Gaza City in a war that has a staggering death toll of more than 10,000 Palestinians, two-thirds of them women and children, according to the Health Ministry of the Hamasrun territory. The latest U.S. strike was designed to take out supplies, weapons and ammunition in an effort to erode the abilities of the Iranian-backed militants to attack Americans based in Iraq and Syria. And it reflects the Biden administration's determination to maintain a delicate balance. The U.S. wants to hit Iranian-backed groups suspected of targeting the U.S. as strongly as possible to deter future aggression, possibly fueled by Israel's war against Hamas, while also working to avoid further inflaming the region and provoking a wider conflict.
Ivanka Trump said she could not remember property deals she handled at her father's firm, as she testified in a civil fraud case that threatens his business empire.
A judge has already found Donald Trump and two adult sons, Eric and Donald Jr, liable for fraud, ruling they inflated assets to secure favourable loans. Ivanka Trump, 42, was initially a codefendant, too, until an appeals court ruling in her favour this year. She fought hard to avoid testifying. The mother-of-three had argued she could not leave her children in Florida during a school week. But a New York judge and appeals court ruled she must take the stand as a witness. This is a non-jury trial, in which the judge will decide on allegations of falsifying business records, insurance fraud and conspiracy.

The US state department has approved a $320 million sale to Israel of equipment for kits that turn unguided bombs into more precise, GPS-guided munitions, according to a letter sent by the department to Congress that was obtained by The New York Times. The order comes on top of an earlier one for the same equipment that was valued at almost $403 million. Israel has been using the kits during its bombing campaign in Gaza. According to the Gaza health ministry, which is part of the Hamas-run government in the enclave, the Israeli strikes have resulted in the deaths of about 10,000 Palestinians, 40 per cent of whom are young children and teens.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has warned that Israel cannot reoccupy Gaza after the war with Hamas ends. Mr Blinken also insisted Hamas could not continue to rule there as it risked a repetition of the 7 October attacks. He said there should be no forced displacement, blockade or reduction of territory, and that the West Bank-based Palestinian Authority should govern. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said Israel will have "overall security responsibility" for Gaza indefinitely.

Hezbollah warns of regional war if Gaza bombing goes on
Hezbollah's deputy chief Sheikh Naim Qassem HiIndia Newsdesk
The second in command of Hezbollah - the powerful Iranian backed militia in Lebanon - has said Israel's killing of civilians in Gaza risks wider war in the Middle East. Sheikh Naim Qassem
told the BBC that "very serious and very dangerous developments could occur in the region, and no-one would be able to stop the repercussions". Hezbollah's deputy leader was speaking in an interview in Beirut, as the Hamasrun health ministry in Gaza said more than 10,000 people had been killed there. Israel's assault follows the Hamas attacks on 7 October which killed 1,400 people - 1,000 of them civilians. "The danger is real," he said, "because Israel is increasing its aggression against civilians and killing more women and children. Is it possible for this to continue and increase, without bringing real danger to the region? I think not."

Rishi Sunak has said he will hold the Met Police chief "accountable" over a pro-Palestinian march set to take place this Saturday, on Armistice Day. The prime minister has criticised the timing of the demonstration in London as "provocative and disrespectful". Sir Mark Rowley rejected calls by campaigners to ban the protest, saying such a move would be a "last resort". Organisers insist their march will not go near commemorations and accuse the government of manufacturing a row. Protests have been held in London, and
other cities globally, each Saturday since the Israel-Gaza war began. Earlier, Mr Sunak met the Met Police commissioner to seek "reassurances" that remembrance services would be safeguarded, saying there was a risk of "those who seek to divide society using this weekend as a platform to do so". In a statement, he said police had confirmed the demonstration would be far from the Cenotaph - the focal point of remembrance services - but that Sir Mark would keep the matter under constant review based on latest intelligence.

Artificial Rain In Delhi On November 20-21? IIT Team's Plan To Tackle Smog
HiIndia Newsdesk
New Delhi: The Arvind Kejriwal government is planning a spell of artificial rain in Delhi on November 20-21 to provide relief to residents gasping due to a sharp dip in air quality over the past one week. The air quality index in the national capital has remained in the 'severe' category for seven days in a row due to a combination of crop residue burning in neighbouring states and local factors such as vehicular emissions. Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai and Finance Minister Atishi held a meeting with a team from IIT Kanpur, which proposed that a spell of artificial rain may help amid the air emergency in the national capital.

Thousands Flee As Israel Troops Push On Gaza, Target "Hamas Structures" HiIndia Newsdesk
New Delhi: Thousands of Palestinians fled North Gaza as Israel intensified their ground assault bombarding residential areas in a bid to "tighten the stranglehold" around Hamas. Israel doubled down on its denial of a ceasefire till Hamas releases hostages. Israeli troops and Hamas operatives are fighting at close range in Gaza City as thousands of civilians fled south to avoid being trapped in the heart of the conflict. On Thursday, Israel said that their troops have entered the "heart" of the Gaza Strip. Thousands still remain inside the encircled north, including at Gaza City's main Al Shifa hospital, where Um Haitham Hejela was sheltering with her young children in an improvised tent. The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) shared a video on X of their assault on Gaza cities and claimed that they were targetting Hamas infrastructure and the tunnels being used by their operatives.
Srinagar, Nov 9 (IANS) A terrorist was killed in an encounter with the security forces in South Kashmir's Shopian district, police said on Thursday. "One terrorist affiliated with proscribed terror outfit TRF (The Resistance Front) neutralised. Incriminating materials including arms and ammunition recovered. Search going on," the police said in a post on X. The firefight started after a joint team of police and security forces got an input about the presence of terrorists in Kathohalan area. After security forces cordoned off the area, terrorists hiding there started firing drawing retaliation by the security forces.
US warplanes carried out a strike on an Iran-linked weapons storage facility in eastern Syria today in response to attacks against American personnel. Hamas' armed wing also released a video that appeared to show intense street battles alongside bombed-out buildings in Gaza City.
The war began when Hamas attacked Israel on October 7 and, according to Israeli officials, killed about 1,400 people, mainly civilians, and seized 239 hostages. Aiming to destroy Hamas, Israel retaliated with a relentless bombardment and ground invasion of the Gaza Strip that, according to the Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza, has killed more than 10,500 people, many of them children.

Having joined TikTok earlier this year, Mr Ramaswamy made reference to Ms Haley's previous criticism of his presence on the platform during the second Republican primary debate held in California in September. "In the last debate, she made fun of me for actually joining TikTok while her own daughter was actually using the app for a long time. 'She deserves to be hanged': Son of British Sikh woman who murdered husband HiIndia Newsdesk
London: (IANS) The son of a 38-year-old British Sikh woman, sentenced to death in India for poisoning and slitting her husband's throat in 2016, has said that his mother "deserves to be hanged" for doing an "evil thing". Ramandeep Kaur Mann from Derby was found guilty of murdering her husband Sukhjit Singh, 34, by a court in Uttar Pradesh last month after their teenage son Arjun - who witnessed the murder when he was nine - testified against his mother. Kaur reportedly connived with her lover Gurpreet Singh to kill Sukhjit for his 2 million pound life insurance and property in the UK and India. Arjun Singh, 17, told the Daily Mail that Ramandeep stopped being a mother to
him and his younger brother the moment she murdered their father. "There are not many children who watch their mother kill their father and then give evidence about it. How do you try and get on with your life after something like this? I've had to be very brave and I'm proud of what I've done because I've got justice for my father," Arjun told the British daily. The court heard during the trial that
Ramandeep planned a month-long family vacation to Shahjahanpur with her husband and two children. She colluded with her lover Gurpreet Singh, a resident of Kapurthala, and laced her husband's biryani with poison before slitting her husband's throat. Arjun described to the court seeing his mother smother his father with a pillow, and Gurpreet hitting him on the head with a hammer. Speaking of his mother's death sentence, Arjun said: "I would like to be there when it happens. It doesn't fill me with fear, in fact, it would give me a lot of satisfaction and relief and I look forward to that day. I would like all my family to be there with me. I would like to see with my own eyes that justice for my father has been served.

Google, Microsoft Bet On This 27-Year-Old To Make AI Work In India

n the tranquil village of Agara, nestled amidst rice paddies and groundnut fields in India, Preethi P. finds herself in a unique position. In her humble one-room home, she usually earns less than $1 a day as a tailor, but today she is reading sentences in her native Kannada language into a smartphone app. Preethi, like 70 other workers in the region, has become part of a global workforce hired by the startup Karya to collect and label data in vernacular languages, essential for training AI chatbots and virtual assistants. Karya, established in 2021, distinguishes itself by providing fair compensation, up to 20 times the minimum wage, to its mostly female workforce in rural communities. After just three days of work,

ndia and Canada are facing a protracted process of repairing their frayed diplomatic relations, with both nations entrenched in hardline positions. The recent decision by India to partially restore visa services, following weeks of suspension in response to Canada's claim of Indian involvement in the murder of a Khalistani terrorist, has raised some hopes for improved relations. However, experts and officials suggest that this is far from a breakthrough, as neither side has compelling reasons to expedite a return to normalcy. Mutual recriminations over the accusation, which India vehemently denies, have strained the centuryold ties between the two nations, particularly affecting their extensive connections through the Sikh community. The relationship is currently in a "de-escalation phase" through quiet diplomacy, according to Ajay Bisaria, India's former ambassador to Canada. Nevertheless, the visa restrictions are expected to continue impacting the movement of tens of thousands of
Microsoft has used startup Karya to source local speech data for its AI products Preethi earned 4,500 rupees ($54), more than quadruple her monthly earnings as a tailor. This newfound income allows her to make home repairs and uplift her living conditions. Major tech players, including Microsoft, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and Google, are recognizing the value of Karya's approach. They are partnering with the startup to acquire high-quality data in Indian languages, addressing the challenge of catering to non-English-
speaking users. With nearly one million data annotation workers predicted to be in India by 2030, Karya's ethical and wellcompensated workforce is pivotal. The initiative is particularly crucial as AI services have been predominantly developed with English-language data, causing misrepresentations and linguistic issues when used in non-English-speaking regions. Karya's mission aligns with the growing need to provide a diverse and comprehensive dataset for AI systems to avoid perpetuating stereotypes and
misinformation. Karya, a Bangalore-based social impact startup, not only enhances data supply but also fights poverty by providing employment opportunities to underserved communities. Its founder, Manu Chopra, emphasizes the importance of fairly compensating workers and breaking the cycle of poverty. Karya's impact extends beyond India, as it seeks to offer its platform as a service to organizations in Africa and South America. This innovative approach not only contributes to improving AI technologies but also empowers individuals like Shambhavi S., a mother in a distant village, to earn for her family's better future, even if she doesn't fully comprehend the world of artificial intelligence.
India-Canada Relationship In "Deep Crisis, Its Worst Ever"

Indians and people of Indian origin in Canada. While business and trade links have been spared, discussions on a freetrade agreement have been delayed, jeopardizing Canada's Indo-Pacific plans where India plays a vital role in countering an assertive China. The crisis began when Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau pursued credible allegations linking Indian government agents to the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a proponent of Khalistan, which resulted in diplomatic tensions. Canada expelled India's intelligence chief, prompting India to halt 13 visa categories for Canadians. However, on October 25, India announced
the resumption of visas under four categories, though it is not considered a thaw. Canada is not abandoning its Indo-Pacific strategy, but the unpredictability surrounding the murder investigation, the trial, and India's upcoming elections could hinder progress. The relationship between the two nations, which has a significant Sikh population in Canada and relies on Indian students for its international education business, remains strained. Experts believe that while a modest de-escalation has occurred, substantial obstacles still exist, and it will take time for cooler heads to prevail and restore the relationship to its former state.

Parul Chaudhary named event ambassador for Vasai Virar Marathon
The Indian cricket team has already booked their spot in the Cricket World Cup 2023 semifinals thanks to a brilliant unbeaten run in the competition. On the other hand, arch-rivals Pakistan have enjoyed a mixed run of form in the tournament with four wins and four losses in their eight encounters so far. Pakistan, on the other hand, have to win their last match and depend on Afghanistan and hope to get a favourable result from the New Zealand game to book a spot in the semifinals. Pakistan and New Zealand have one match left in the tournament while Afghanistan will play South Africa in their final game in the competition. Having already lost against Australia, if Afghanistan lose against South Africa too, the race will come down to Pakistan and New Zealand provided they win their respective matches. If Afghanistan win against South Africa, all three teams will have 10 points (provided Pakistan and New Zealand win their respective final matches too), and the race for the 4th spot will be decided by Net Run Rate (NRR). If Pakistan win their match and both New Zealand and Afghanistan lose their final matches in the group stage, the Babar Azam-led side will finish fourth and end up facing India in the semi-finals. As per the format, the first-placed team will face the 4th-placed team in the semi-finals. Hence, and Indo-Pak clash will enthrall the fans once again in World Cup 2023.

Are Indian Students Safe in the US?
T
he trend of Indian students coming to the United States for education continues to rise, making them the largest minority on campuses across the country. However, whenever distressing news of a senseless killing of a student comes about, the community feels distraught about the safety of Indian students in the US. In Indiana, a 24-year-old Indian student was stabbed in a gym in what seems like a totally unprovoked attack. The injured
man who is currently fighting for his life is identified as Varun. A native from Khammam district in Telangana, India, Varun has sustained a severe brain stem injury. Currently undergoing treatment at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne, he remains critical with doctors treating him giving a dismal chance of survival. What remains tragic in this accident is it seems to be a totally unexplained act of violence. The accused named Jordan Andrade attacked Varun at a public gym in Valparaiso city in Indiana. As the investigations are underway, it is believed that Andrade who is also 24-years-old told the police that “someone” had told him that the man was threatening. The Times of Northwest Indiana quoted the police as saying that Andrade said he had requested a massage that morning and walked into the massage room to find the other man, whom he did not know but found “a little weird.” Andrade said he defended himself against the other man as a “defensive fighter” and “took him out.” Varun had been pursuing a MS degree in Indiana. His family in India has been informed. It has been difficult for the Indian community as in the past similar such incidents have put a question mark on the safety of Indian students often studying thousands of miles away from their families.

The CBAM (Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism) or carbon tax (a kind of import duty) will come into effect from January 1, 2026, but from October 1 this year, domestic companies from seven carbon-intensive sectors, including
steel, cement, fertiliser, aluminium and hydrocarbon products, will have to share data with regard to carbon emissions with the EU.

WASHINGTON, DC A chain message claiming to be from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Office of Risk Management and Gleneagles Hospital is a long-standing hoax that has circulated in various forms for over 20 years. The message falsely states that seven women died from inhaling poisonous perfume sent to them. It’s important to clarify that this message is entirely fake and has been debunked repeatedly. The message starts by mentioning “Glen Eagles Hospital,” but there is no such hospital in the United States. Gleneagles Hospitals are found in other locations like Singapore, Malaysia, and Hong Kong. In 2013, the Gleneagles Hospital in Kuala Lumpur issued a statement on Facebook, confirming that the message did not originate from their hospital and stating that they have never admitted or treated such patients. The current version of the chain message claims to be from “Diane J. Ford, Office of the Chief of Police Office of Risk Management,” with an address at “101 M Street SW Washington, DC.” However, the actual Office of Risk Management in Washington, D.C., is located at 300 Indiana Avenue, NW, Washington, DC. The address mentioned in the message is actually for the Metropolitan
Police Department’s 1st District station. Elizabeth Grannis, Public Information Officer for the Metropolitan Police Department, has confirmed that the chain message is not real. While there is a DC Government Employee named Diane Ford who has worked for the Metropolitan Police Department since 1991, it is unclear if she has any relation to the origin of the hoax message. This chain message has persisted for many years, with Facebook posts about it dating back to as early as 2009. Before the prevalence of social media, it circulated as a common email hoax. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) archived pages from November 2001 and May 2001 have called out these messages as hoaxes and linked them to another hoax called the Klingerman virus, which involved a similar pattern of false claims about illnesses caused by mail-delivered items. Multiple news organizations have debunked this chain message over the years, emphasizing its falseness and the lack of credible sources to support its claims. It’s crucial to be cautious of such messages and verify information before sharing it to prevent the spread of false information.

DHS to Add 65,000 H-2B Visas for FY 2024
HiIndia Newsdesk
WASHINGTON, DC-The Department of Homeland Security (DHS), in collaboration with the Department of Labor (DOL), plans to add 64,716 extra H-2B temporary nonagricultural worker visas for Fiscal Year (FY) 2024, in addition to the congressionally mandated 66,000 H-2B visas available annually. These extra visas are the maximum allowed by the September 2023 Fiscal Year 2024 Continuing Resolution. These visas are vital for American businesses in industries like hospitality, tourism, landscaping, and seafood processing, as they rely on seasonal or temporary workers to meet consumer demand. This expansion aligns with the Biden Administration’s commitment to providing lawful pathways for migration and protecting workers. Announcing this visa availability at the start of FY 2024 will help U.S. businesses plan for their workforce needs. DHS and DOL have implemented strong protections for both American and foreign workers, including requiring employers to first seek American workers and preventing worker exploitation. Recent proposed regulations aim to further enhance worker protections in the H-2A and H-2B visa programs. The H-2B Worker Protection Taskforce is also taking steps to safeguard H-2B and U.S. workers from exploitation. The supplemental H-2B visas will include 20,000 allocated to workers from specific countries and 44,716 for returning workers who previously had H-2B status in the last three fiscal years. The program allows employers to hire noncitizens temporarily for nonagricultural work, with a focus on seasonal or intermittent needs. Employers must demonstrate a lack of available U.S. workers and ensure that hiring H-2B workers won’t harm the wages or conditions of U.S. workers. H-2B workers can stay for a maximum of three years, with a three-month break before seeking readmission. DHS and DOL are committed to protecting H-2B workers from exploitation, ensuring fair recruitment, and maintaining program integrity. More details on program safeguards, eligibility, and requirements will be available in the forthcoming temporary final rule and on the USCIS webpage.

FLORIDA- 21-year-old Florida resident Deep Alpesh Kumar Patel has been arrested on charges of making a death threat to a prominent Jewish organization, the World Jewish Congress in New York. Allegedly Patel left a threatening voicemail on October 21 targeting Jewish people. According to reports, Patel identified himself by name and then left a barrage of expletives, while also saying, “If I had a chance, I would kill every single one of you Israelis. Every single one of you! Cause mass genocide of every single Israeli.” An investigation was prompted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Joint Terrorism Task Force. Federal authorities have emphasized that a criminal complaint is merely a formal charge, and every defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Patel, if convicted, could face a maximum penalty of five years in federal prison. On being interviewed by the police at his Sarasota home, Patel confirmed making the call. However, he denied any intention of threatening anyone. Patel claimed that he had called Jewish centers to express his family’s anger with Israel for what he perceived as the genocide of the Palestinian people. He stated that he used harsh language to convey his anger, not to threaten or scare.

FLORIDA- An Indian national, Philip Mathew, has been handed a life sentence for the heinous murder of his wife, Merin Joy, in 2020. This tragic incident occurred in the parking lot of the hospital where she worked as a nurse, Broward Health Coral Springs. Mathew chose to enter a plea of no contest to the first-degree murder charge, sparing himself from the possibility of receiving the death penalty. In the gruesome attack that took place in 2020, Merin Joy, aged 26 at the time, was brutally stabbed 17 times. Philip Mathew obstructed her attempt to escape from their abusive relationship, assaulting her repeatedly, and even drove his vehicle over her before fleeing the scene. A witness to the horrifying incident described Mathew’s actions as akin to driving over her “like she was a speed bump.” Despite the courageous efforts of her colleagues at the hospital to come to her aid, Joy could only utter the heartbreaking words, “I have a baby.” Tragically, she managed to reveal the identity of her assailant to the police before succumbing to her injuries. During the recent court hearing, Mathew also pleaded no contest to

Consequently, he was swiftly sentenced to life in state prison, with no possibility of parole. Additionally, he received a maximum sentence of five years for the aggravated assault with a deadly weapon charge. The decision to forgo pursuing the death penalty was based on the certainty of the life sentence Mathew received and his willingness to waive his right to appeal. Paula McMahon, a spokesperson for the State Attorney’s Office, provided this explanation. The loss of Merin Joy continues to profoundly impact her family. Joby Philip, a cousin on Joy’s side, attended the hearing via Zoom from his residence in Tampa and conveyed the outcome to the family. Joy’s mother expressed relief that her daughter’s murderer would spend the rest of his life behind bars and that the legal process had reached its conclusion.
Indian American representative from Washington’s 7th Congressional District, Pramila Jayapal has expressed concerns about President Joe Biden's performance in the upcoming 2024 elections. Given the backdrop of the crisis unfolding in Gaza various polls have shown not very promising results for Joe Biden. A new polling showed him trailing former President Donald Trump in multiple battleground states. Speaking with the MSNBC, Jayapal said, “You said the polls really don’t reflect where people are, I agree with you,” “But I will tell you — this is the first time, that I have felt like the 2024 election is in great trouble for the president and for our Democratic control, which is essential to moving forward.” She added, “Because these young people, Muslim Americans, Arab Americans, but also young people see this conflict as a moral conflict and a moral crisis,” Jayapal told the former White House press secretary. “And they they are not going to be brought back to the table easily with you know, if we do not address this.” It may also be noted that a little after the poll was published on Sunday, David Axelrod, a key aide of former President Barack Obama, suggested that Biden drop out of the 2024 presidential race. He said that the poll is set to “send tremors of doubt” through the Democratic Party.

Smoking, long hours of work cause strokes: Experts
Intermittent fasting safe, effective for diabetes control: Study New York: (IANS) Time-restricted eating, also known as intermittent fasting, can help people with Type-2 diabetes lose weight and control their blood sugar levels, according to a new study. Researchers at the University of Illinois-Chicago, US, found that people who ate only during an eight-hour window between noon and 8 p.m. each day actually lost more weight over six months than participants who were instructed to reduce their calorie intake by 25 per cent. Both groups had similar reductions in longterm blood sugar levels, as measured by a test of haemoglobin A1C, which shows blood sugar levels over the past three months. The study, published in JAMA Network Open, enrolled 75 participants into three groups: those who followed the time-restricted eating rules, those who reduced calories and a control group. Participants' weight, waist circumference, blood sugar levels and other health indicators were measured over the course of six months. Krista Varady, professor of kinesiology and nutrition at the varsity, said that participants in the time-restricted eating group had an easier time following the regime than those in the calorie-reducing group.
The researchers believe this is partly because patients with diabetes are generally told to cut back on calories by their doctors as a first line of defence, so many of these participants likely had already tried -- and struggled with -- that form of dieting. And while the participants in the timerestricted eating group were not instructed to reduce their calorie intake, they ended up doing so by eating within a fixed window. "Our study shows that time-restricted eating might be an effective alternative to traditional dieting for people who can't do the traditional diet or are burned out on it," said Varady. "For many people trying to lose weight, counting time is easier than counting calories." There were no serious adverse events reported during the six-month study. Occurrences of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) and hyperglycemia (high blood sugar) did not differ between the diet groups and control groups. The study was small and should be followed up by larger ones, said Varady. While it acts as a proof of concept to show that time-restricted eating is safe for those with type 2 diabetes, Varady said people with diabetes should consult their doctors before starting this sort of diet.
Lucknow: (IANS) Lack of exercise, smoking and sitting for long hours during regular 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. jobs is a major risk factor for blood pressure and diabetes which in turn is responsible for making the young vulnerable to stroke. According to Prof. R K Garg, HoD, neurology at King George’s Medical University (KGMU), “Stroke cases have gone up among people less than 45 years of age and a common reason is hypertension.” “Professionals between 40 and 50 years of age are trying hard to push their career. With a lot of stress in the office, irregular food habits at home and lack of physical exercise, they become soft targets for hypertension and diabetes. Hypertension makes them vulnerable to stroke,” explained Prof. Garg. Garg said that there are early warning signs that need to be taken seriously. “These symptoms, one may think are temporary due to workload, but these are early warning signs,” said Prof. Garg. “Signs of a stroke include sudden numbness or weakness in the face, arm, or leg, especially on one side of the body. Sudden confusion, trouble in speaking or understanding, sudden trouble seeing from one or both eyes, sudden trouble in walking, dizziness, loss of balance, or coordination, sudden severe headache with no known cause are early warning signals,” he said. Prof. Kauser Usman, senior faculty member, department of medicine, KGMU, said that “Hypertension is becoming common among office going people, chasing deadlines.” “Pregnant women too suffer with hypertension and gestational diabetes. This makes them vulnerable to stroke particularly to haemorrhagic stroke,” said Dr Amita Shukla, senior gynaecologist, SC Trivedi Memorial Trust hospital. A stroke, often referred to as a “brain attack”, happens when blood flow to a part of the brain is interrupted. There are primarily three types of strokes, the first being ischemic stroke, which is most common, caused by a blocked artery from a blood clot. Here, blood is prevented from reaching part of the brain.
Scientists identify 2 probiotics strains that may help lower BP Washington: (IANS) A team of scientists has identified two new probiotics strains that can help lower high blood pressure that affects at least 40 per cent of the global population. In experiments on hypertensive mice, treatment with the two probiotics — Bifidobacterium lactis and Lactobacillus rhamnosus — returned blood pressure to normal levels. The researchers also tracked how those probiotics altered the animals’ gut microbial mix over 16 weeks, identifying specific microbes and metabolic pathways that may help explain the protective effect. “Accumulated evidence supports an Her team worked with microbiologist antihypertensive effect of probiotics Zhihong Sun at Inner Mongolia and probiotic fermented foods in both Agricultural University on the study published in the journal mSystems. in vitro and in vivo experiments,” said computational biologist Jun Li from the “We believed that the dietary intake of probiotic foods would well supplement City University of Hong Kong.
traditional hypertension treatment,” Li added. In the new study, the researchers tested the 2 probiotic strains on mice that developed high blood pressure after consuming water mixed with fructose.
They found that fructose-fed mice that received either probiotic showed significantly lower blood pressures than those fed a high fructose diet and not treated with probiotics. In addition, the researchers found no difference between the blood pressure readings of fructose-fed mice that received probiotics and a control group of mice that only drank water. That suggests probiotic interventions would maintain blood pressure at normal levels, Li said. The researchers are now planning a large clinical trial to see if the protective effect of probiotics extend to people with hypertension. “Probiotics present a promising avenue in preventive medicine,” Sun said, “offering potential in regulating hypertension and reshaping our approach to cardiovascular health.”

This vibrant festival, however, often revolves around sweets, rich feasts, and treats that can be challenging for individuals living with diabetes. Here are some smart strategies for navigating the Diwali season with your health in mind: New Delhi, Nov 5 (IANSlife) Diwali, the Festival of Lights, is a time for joy, celebration, and family gatherings. This vibrant festival, however, often revolves around sweets, rich feasts, and treats that can be challenging for individuals living with diabetes. The confluence of tradition and indulgence during Diwali can present a formidable hurdle for maintaining optimal blood sugar levels. Fortunately, with careful planning and mindfulness, it is possible to partake in the festivities while managing diabetes effectively. Here are some smart strategies for navigating the Diwali season with your health in mind:
Plan your meals ahead of time:
Preparation is the key to success in managing diabetes during Diwali. This will help to avoid making unhealthy choices when surrounded by tempting treats. Choose meals that are low in sugar and carbohydrates, and high in protein and fiber.
Be mindful of your portion sizes:
It's easy to overindulge during Diwali, but it's important to be mindful of the portion sizes. Take small plates and servings, and don't be afraid to say no to second helpings.
Choose healthy snacks:
If a person is feeling hungry between meals, reach for healthy snacks like nuts, seeds, or yogurt. Avoid sugary snacks and drinks, which can spike the blood sugar levels.
Take breaks from eating:
It's important to take breaks from eating during Diwali so that the body has time to digest the food. Get up and move around or talk to friends and family.
Monitor your blood sugar levels regularly:
It's important to monitor the blood
sugar levels regularly during Diwali, especially if a person is making any changes to their diet or exercise routine. This will help inidentifying any problems early on and taking corrective action. In addition to the core strategies mentioned above, there are several other valuable tips for effectively managing diabetes during the Diwali season:
Limit alcohol intake
Alcohol can lower blood sugar levels and increase the risk of hypoglycemia. Get enough sleep: When a body is well-rested, it is able to regulate the blood sugar levels in a better way. Manage stress: Stress can raise blood sugar levels, so it's important to find healthy ways to manage stress during Diwali. Try yoga, meditation, or spending time in nature. Although these tactics offer a strong foundation for diabetes management around Diwali, it's important to keep in mind that diabetes treatment is a customised approach. Consulting a healthcare professional is essential if you want individualized guidance and assistance based on your unique requirements and state of health. They can assist you in creating a customized strategy for managing your diabetes during the celebrations. For those who have diabetes, Diwali may be a time for both celebration and thoughtful health care. You can take advantage of the holiday mood and still maintain your health by organizing your meals, watching what you eat, and making wise decisions. Remember that vigilance, regular monitoring, and professional guidance are your allies in ensuring a happy and healthy Diwali.
