Rainbow Bridge:
US-Canada border blast not terror-related, says NY governor
Actor Jamie Foxx Sued For Sexually Assaulting Woman
HiIndia Newsdesk
A speeding car crashed and exploded in a deadly fireball on a US-Canada border bridge, triggering a major security scare on the eve of Thanksgiving. Two people in the vehicle died, and a US border agent was injured, but New York's governor ruled out terrorism. The car was being driven from the New York side of the border to Rainbow Bridge when it crashed at a checkpoint. The incident near Niagara Falls saw the closure of four bridges on the world's longest international border. The explosion happened at around 11:30 local time (16:30 GMT) on Wednesday, causing serious disruption on one of the busiest travel days of the year, the eve of the Thanksgiving holiday in the US. C r o s s - b o r d e r t r a i n t r av e l w a s temporarily halted and officers at Buffalo and Niagara Falls airports went into a heightened state of alert screening cars for explosives. The incident stoked fears of a possible

Texas, US: Former US President Donald Trump visited Texas near the US-Mexico border on Sunday (local time) and attacked the Biden administration over his 'antimigrant' rhetoric, calling the US borders the "most unsafe" in the history of the world, CNN reported. Speaking at the South Texas International Airport, Trump bashed President Joe Biden over his handling of the border, arguing that the US now has the "most unsecure border in the history, I believe, really, of the world." During the visit, Trump also received the endorsement of Texas Governor Greg Abbott. "We need Donald J. Trump back as our president of the United States of America," the Republican governor said at an event with the former president in Edinburg, Texas. The former president has been ramping up his rhetoric on the campaign trail, promising to conduct the "largest domestic deportation operation in American history" if he wins the White House next year. He has said that undocumented immigrants are "poisoning the blood of our country".
Mr Trudeau excused himself from Question Period in the House of Commons, and said his government was taking the incident "extraordinarily seriously". As a precaution, officials used trucks to block the Canadian entrance to Rainbow Bridge, which links Ontario with New York and the US city of Niagara Falls with Niagara Falls, Canada.
US President Joe Biden on Tuesday welcomed the deal to secure the release of hostages taken by Palestinian Islamist
group Hamas during the attack on Israel. Israel's government and Hamas agreed to a four-day pause in fighting to allow the release of 50 hostages held in Gaza in exchange for 150 Palestinians imprisoned in Israel, and the entry of humanitarian aid into the besieged enclave. Biden added that the deal should also bring home additional American hostages. "Today’s deal should bring home additional American hostages, and I will not stop until they are all released," he said in a statement.
US Says 3 Americans May Be Among 50 Hostages To Be Released By Hamas
New York: US actor Jamie Foxx and Guns N' Roses frontman Axl Rose were each accused of sexual assault Wednesday, part of a flurry of suits filed in New York before a statue of limitations deadline. In the filing against Rose, Sheila Kennedy, an actress and model, alleges that he "sexually assaulted her" in 1989 and that she "did not consent and felt overpowered". The alleged victim in the Foxx case, identified only as Jane Doe, said that Foxx "intentionally and without consent used force to offensively touch" her, by groping her breasts and genitals at a rooftop bar in Manhattan in 2015.

The Carter Center confirmed in a statement that she died peacefully with her family by her side. Washington: Three Americans held by Hamas in Gaza since its attack on Israel last month are expected to be among at least 50 hostages to be released by the Islamist Palestinian group under a deal arranged with Israel, the U.S. and Qatar, a senior U.S. official said. The three include a 3-year-old girl whose parents were among the more than 1,200 people killed in Hamas' initial Oct. 7 attack on southern Israel, the official said. Israeli bombardments
since have flattened large swaths of Hamas-led Gaza and killed 13,300 civilians, according to authorities in Gaza. The official, speaking to reporters on condition of anonymity, said it was likely that more than 50 hostages, largely women and children, will be released once a pause in fighting takes hold. Under terms of the deal, Hamas is to release 50 hostages and Israel will release 150 Palestinian prisoners during a four- to five-day pause in the fighting.
New Delhi: US Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti on Monday made a strong pitch for "deeper conversations" between New Delhi and Washington on a regulatory framework for artificial intelligence, saying it could be an example of a "multiplicative relationship" between the two democracies. In an interactive session organised by the Observer Research Foundation, Mr Garcetti stressed the need to "get in front" of artificial intelligence (AI) to avoid facing catastrophic consequences.

The release of hostages under a temporary truce between Israel and Palestinian Hamas militants will not happen before Friday, Israel's national security adviser said, thwarting hopes of relatives that some would be freed on Thursday. Israel and Hamas agreed early on Wednesday to a ceasefire in Gaza for at least four days, to let in humanitarian aid and free at least 50 hostages held by militants in the enclave in exchange for at least 150 Palestinians jailed in Israel. The starting time of the truce and release of hostages captured by Hamas during its Oct. 7 attack on Israel had yet to be officially announced. An Egyptian security source said mediators sought a start time of 10 a.m. on Thursday. "The negotiations on the release of our hostages are advancing and continuing constantly," Israeli National Security Adviser Tzachi Hanegbi said in a statement released by the prime

Human Rights Watch accuses Beijing of closing and destroying mosques

A top Pakistani court on Wednesday summoned caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar ul Haq Kakar to personally appear before it on November 29 in a case involving 55 missing students from the restive Balochistan province and asked the government if it should refer the matter to the UN. The Islamabad High Court directed Kakar to appear before it if he did not secure the recovery of the missing Baloch students according to the recommendations of the Baloch Enforced Disappearance Commission, Dawn News reported.
China is closing, destroying and repurposing mosques, Human Rights Watch (HRW) has alleged in a new report. The crackdown is part of a "systematic effort" to curb the practice of Islam in China, HRW said. There are about 20 million Muslims in China, which is officially atheist but says it allows religious freedom. Observers, however, say there has been
an increased crackdown on organised religion in recent years - with Beijing seeking greater control. The BBC contacted China's foreign ministry and ethnic affairs commission for comment in advance of publication of the HRW report. "The Chinese government's closure, destruction and repurposing of mosques is part of a systemic effort to curb the practice of Islam in China," said Maya Wang, acting China director at Human Rights Watch. The report follows mounting evidence of systematic human rights abuses against Uyghur Muslims in China's north-western Xinjiang region. Beijing denies the accusations of abuse. Most of China's Muslims live in the country's north-west, which includes Xinjiang, Qinghai, Gansu and Ningxia.
N Korea Launches Spy Satellite, US Slams "Brazen Violation" Of UN Sanctions
World headed for nearly 3 degrees Celsius warming: UN report HiIndia Newsdesk
The world is headed for a temperature rise of around 3 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels by the end of the century even if countries fully implement their nationallydetermined contributions (NDCs) or action plans to reduce emission of planet-warming gases, according to a new report released by the United Nations on Monday. The report released ahead of the 28th session of the annual UN climate talks or COP28 in Dubai said global emissions rose by 1.2 per cent in 2021-2022.

Israel's public broadcaster Kan, citing an unidentified Israeli official, reported there was a 24-hour delay because the agreement was not signed by Hamas and mediator Qatar. The official said they were optimistic the agreement would be carried out when it was signed.

North Korea said Wednesday it had succeeded in putting a military spy satellite in orbit after two previous failures, as the United States led its allies in condemning the launch as a "brazen violation" of UN sanctions. A rocket carrying the satellite blasted off Tuesday night from North Phyongan province and "accurately put the reconnaissance satellite 'Malligyong-1' on its orbit," state-run news agency KCNA reported.
Images in state media showed North Korean leader Kim Jong Un smiling and waving, surrounded by whiteuniformed scientists and engineers who cheered and clapped after watching the successful blastoff. The United States led condemnation of the launch, saying it was a "brazen violation" of UN sanctions and could destabilise the region, with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also slamming the launch. South Korea reacted by partially suspending a 2018 military deal aimed at reducing military tensions, saying it would resume surveillance operations along the border with North Korea. As North Korea stopped responding to military-to-military communication lines earlier this year, Seoul's "defence ministry will just announce it," rather than notifying Pyongyang directly, a government spokesperson told AFP.
Canberra, (IANS) Over 2,000 Palestinians and Israelis have been granted temporary Australian visas since the conflict between Israel and Hamas escalated in October, the government has revealed. According to data released by the Department of Home Affairs on Wednesday night, more than 2,500 visas were granted to Palestinians and Israelis with connections to Australia between October 7 and November 20. Of those, 860 were for Palestinians and 1,793 for Israelis, Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong said at a press conference.

UK Agents Hike Fees for Indian Students Ahead of Government's Ban on Dependents
HiIndia Newsdesk
London, Nov 23 (IANS) Education agents are charging Indian students more money to secure spots at UK universities ahead of a government ban, which prohibits dependents from entering the country, beginning January 1, 2024. A near-eightfold rise in the number of family members joining foreign students led Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to announce the ban earlier this year for those not studying "highvalue" degrees under government plans. A couple paid 30,000 pounds to secure a student visa and a dependent's visa to travel to the UK together, according to The Telegraph newspaper. According to estimates, international students add 35 billion pounds a year to the UK economy, and 490,763 students were given visas last year.

From Tunnel to Ambulance to Hospital: A Step-by-Step Rescue Plan in Uttarkashi HiIndia Newsdesk
Uttarkashi (Uttarakhand): The operation to rescue 41 workers trapped inside an Uttarakhand tunnel for the past 12 days is in its final phase. As of midnight, rescue teams had said that about 10 metres of debris separates them from the trapped workers. According to rescue teams, the operation involved drilling through the debris to push wide pipes for the trapped workers to walk out through. The auger machine, which drills through about 3 metres of debris in an hour, had hit a metal obstruction early this morning. A metal cutter was then used to remove the block and the operation resumed. As the auger machine drills through, pipes are pushed through the debris. Once a pipe is all in, another is welded to it. In this manner, an escape route is being prepped for the trapped workers out of their long confinement. Welders have been flown in from Delhi to put together the final stretch of the pipe. They will get to work once the drilling ends. But merely bringing the workers out of the tunnel is not enough. Once the rescue pipe reaches the workers, a doctor with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) would go and check their

New York, Nov 23 (IANS) The fiery explosion on a US-Canada bridge that shut down links with New York in the Niagara Falls area is being investigated as a "terrorist act," according to a media report. Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told Parliament on Wednesday that the situation was "very serious". "We're taking this extraordinarily seriously," he said before rushing out of the chamber. Two people in the vehicle travelling from Canada were killed in the blast on the US side of the Rainbow Bridge, which leads to the iconic Niagara Falls, according to media reports quoting official sources. A border official was injured. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) said in a post on 'X' that the situation was "fluid" and it was investigating the incident. Fox News said that according to its sources, the FBI was looking into it as "an attempted terrorist attack".

response to media queries. Today, the White House said the US is "treating a reported plot to kill a Sikh separatist on American soil with utmost seriousness" and has raised the issue with the Indian government "at the senior-most levels", reported news agency Reuters. Asked about the FT report, White House spokesperson Adrienne Watson said Indian counterparts had "expressed surprise and concern" and "stated that activity of this nature was not their policy." "We understand the Indian government is further investigating this issue and will have more to say about it in the coming days. We have conveyed our expectation that anyone deemed responsible should be held accountable," Reuters quoted her as saying.
Hyderabad: Reacting to Akbaruddin Owaisi for allegedly threatening a police officer in Hyderabad, BJP leader and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma here said that the matter would have been settled within "five minutes" if it had happened in Assam. All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) President Asaduddin Owaisi's brother, Akbaruddin Owaisi, was booked on Wednesday for openly threatening a police inspector who was asking him to follow the model code of conduct for the assembly polls.
"Issues in the context of US inputs are already being examined by relevant departments," foreign ministry spokesman Aridam Bagchi said.

Rescue workers said the workers would go through a detailed medical examination once they reach the hospital. Forty-four pipes have been inserted after horizontal drilling so far, rescue officer Harpal Singh told the media yesterday.

'My Hindu faith gives me my freedom': Vivek Ramaswamy HiIndia Newsdesk
New York, Nov 19 (IANS) Indian-American entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy has said that it is his Hindu faith that led him to the presidential campaign, and that as a president, he wants to make faith, family, hard work, patriotism "cool" in the US again. Speaking at the 'The Family Leader' forum, organised by The Daily Signal platform on Saturday, the 38-year-old spoke about Hinduism, Christianity and his traditional family values. "My faith is what gives me my freedom. My faith is what led me to this presidential campaign...I am a Hindu. I believe there is one true God. I believe God put each of us here for a purpose. My faith teaches us that we have a duty, a moral duty to realise that purpose. Those are God's instruments that work through us in different ways, but we are still equal because God resides in each of us. That's the core of my faith," Ramaswamy said. Born to Indian parents who moved to the US from Kerala, Ramaswamy also spoke of the traditional values instilled in him by them. "I grew up in a traditional household. My parents taught me family is the foundation. Respect your parents. Marriage is sacred. Abstinence before marriage is the way to

go. Adultery is wrong. Marriage is between a man and a woman. Divorce is not just some preference you opt for...you get married before God and you make an oath to God and your family," the Republican presidential-hopeful said. Calling Hindu and Christian faiths "shared values" of God, Ramaswamy said that as a president he will make faith, family, hard work, patriotism, and faith "cool" again in the US. "Can I be a President who can promote Christianity across the country? I can't...I don't think that's what we should want a US President to do either...but will I stand for those shared values? Will I promote them in the examples that we set for the next generations? You are damn right, I will! Because that's my duty," Ramaswamy said. In July this year, the Ohio-based biotech entrepreneur was targeted for his Hindu faith by a televangelist who asked citizens not to vote for him. In August, Conservative pundit and author Ann Coulter made racist comments against Ramaswamy and fellow Indian-American presidential candidate Nikki Haley, calling their clash during the Republican primary debate a "Hindu business". Ramaswamy is the nation's second Hindu presidential candidate after former Hawaii congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard who ran as a Democrat in 2020. In his address to prospective voters, Ramaswamy often rues that faith, patriotism, hard work and family “have disappeared, only to be replaced by new secular religions in this country".

India's ODI and Test captain Rohit Sharma is unlikely to play T20 Internationals anymore and had discussed his future in the shortest format before the start of the 50-over World Cup, according to sources in the BCCI. Rohit hasn't played a single game in the shortest format since India's T20 World Cup semi-final exit in November 2022. Hardik Pandya has mostly led the Indian team in T20Is since then. The 36-year-old India skipper has played 148 T20Is scoring 3853 runs at a strike-rate of nearly 140 with four hundreds. "It is not a new development. Rohit hasn't played any T20Is in past one year as the focus was on ODI World Cup. He had extensive discussions with chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar in this regard. He has himself volunteered to stay away from T20Is. It has completely been Rohit's call," a senior BCCI source told PTI on conditions of anonymity. After Rohit, India have four openers -- Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ishan Kishan and Ruturaj Gaikwad -- and all of them are proven IPL performers. If the younger crop does not perform, the selectors or the BCCI brass might just ask Rohit to reconsider his current stand. Indian-American Nursing Home Owner Indian expat wins over Rs 45 cr in weekly Settles $45.6M Kickbacks Case UAE draw Alleged kickbacks to physicians, violating the AntiKickback Statute
HiIndia Newsdesk
New York-based nursing home chain owner, Prema Thekkek, and her company, Paksn Inc, have agreed to pay $45.6 million in a settlement with the US Department of Justice (DOJ) for alleged kickbacks to physicians, violating the Anti-Kickback Statute. The six skilled nursing facilities (SNFs) under Paksn's control entered into medical directorship agreements from 2009 to 2021, disguising kickbacks
as compensation for administrative services. Physicians were hired based on promises to refer patients, paid proportionately to expected referrals, and terminated if they fell short. The settlement, stemming from a 2015 whistleblower complaint, includes a $45,645,327.25 consent judgment and scheduled payments of at least $385,000 over five years. The DOJ emphasized the importance of medical decisions based on sound judgment, not personal self-interest. As part of the agreement, the defendants entered a five-year corporate integrity agreement with the HHS-OIG, mandating an Independent Review Organization's assessment of physician relationships.

Mumbai: (IANS) Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan’s upcoming movie ‘Dunki’, which also stars Taapsee Pannu and Vicky Kaushal, has been made on a reported budget of Rs 85 crore. As per a media report, this makes ‘Dunki’ SRK’s lowest budgeted film in the last seven years including ‘Jab Harry Met Sejal’ which was made at a budget of Rs 90 crore, ‘Raees’ made on Rs 90-95 crore, ‘Zero’ made on a massive budget of Rs 200 crore, ‘Pathaan’ made for Rs 240 crore and the most recent ‘Jawan’ made for Rs 300 crore. However, it should be noted that the reported figure of Rs 85 crore doesn’t include the talent cost. The media report states that the director of the film, Rajkumar Hirani is a cautious
spender, and wrapped up the shoot of the film in 75 days of which SRK shot for 60 days. This pulls up ‘Dunki’ in the profit zone even before it’s release. Shah Rukh Khan shuttled between the sets of his last production ‘Jawan’ and ‘Dunki’ and spent more time on the sets of ‘Jawan’ given its longer schedule. Looks like Hirani retrofitted the schedule of ‘Dunki’ as per SRK’s availability from ‘Jawan’. ‘Jawan’, which released on September 7, has become the 5th highest grossing Indian film and the highest earning Hindi film of all time with reported collections to the tune of Rs 1150 crore, as per industry tracker Sacnilk. As for ‘Dunki’, the film is set for a Christmas release this December and will clash with the Prabhas-starrer ‘Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire’.

New Delhi: (IANS) The global monthly smartphone sell-through volumes grew 5 per cent (year-onyear), making October the first month to record year-on-year growth since June 2021 and breaking the streak of 27 consecutive months of negative year-on-year growth, a new report said on Wednesday. According to Counterpoint Research, the growth has been led by emerging markets with a continuous recovery in the Middle East and Africa, Huawei's comeback in China and the onset of the festive season in India. "Global smartphone sales have been under stress for last two years affected by various issues starting with component shortages, inventory build-up and lengthening of replacement cycles," the report said. These issues have been compounded with an uncertain macroeconomic environment and as a result, global smartphone sales have declined yearon-year every month for more than two years," it added. Another factor for growth has been the launch of the iPhone 15 series, according to the report. In comparison to last year, the launch was pushed back by a week, meaning that the full impact of the new iPhone sales was seen in October. Following strong growth in October, the researchers expected the market to grow year-on-year in the fourth quarter (Q4) of this year as well, setting the market on the path to gradual recovery in the coming quarters.

Satya Nadella's Big Announcement On Sam Altman After OpenAI Sacking HiIndia Newsdesk
HiIndia Newsdesk
The state-owned Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) will start the production of crude oil from its flagship deep-water project in Krishna Godavari Basin next week. The production will help India save nearly ₹ 11,000 crore per year. India imports 85 per cent of its crude oil requirements and about half of its natural gas needs. ONGC also plans a capital expenditure of ₹ 1 lakh crore for petrochemical projects by 2028-2030. The investment will be used for two separate projects. The movement in KG Basin is considered very significant, say top officials of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MPNG). The production from its much-publicised deep sea asset is expected to be a shot in the arm for the explorer and help reverse the low productions bothering the state-owned hydrocarbon behemoth. Astrologers say the time between November 20 and November 26 is a very special moment for projects in India, there are chances of new opportunities. The increase in domestic output will also help save outflow of precious foreign exchange on import of crude oil. At current Brent crude price of $77.4, this output alone will save ₹ 29 crore every day (at ₹ 83.29 to $1) or a staggering Rs10,600 crore on an annual basis. Initially, oil production from the basin was scheduled to start from November 2021, but the deadline was delayed several times.

"Will Reach You Soon": Words Of Hope For 41 Workers Seen After 10 Days HiIndia Newsdesk
The camera and walkie-talkie connection with the workers is a significant development in the long-drawn rescue operation
New Delhi: Their heads covered with hard hats, faces glistening with hope, 41 workers trapped in an Uttarakhand tunnel were seen this morning for the first time in 10 days after a landslide shut their exit route. A camera pushed through a six-inch pipe and walkietalkies connected them to the scores of rescuers working overtime to bring them back. Between the rescue teams and the trapped workers is debris about 40 metres thick. Drilling through this and bringing the workers home has been a tall challenge owing to a combination of factors, including the topography and the nature of soil in the Himalayan region. Around 3.45 am today, when the workers' faces appeared on camera, there were some moments of excitement among the rescue teams. The mood soon
turned serious as the rescuers planned the next steps in their daunting task. They assured the workers that they will reach them soon and shot off several instructions.

CHICAGO, IL- – The celebrations of culture, spirituality, and community that began with the opening of BAPS Swaminarayan Akshardham in New Jersey continue to resonate in all BAPS Mandirs throughout North America this Diwali. The BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Chicago, IL hosted a grand Diwali celebration on November 13, 2023, allowing the local community to immerse themselves in the deep-rooted traditions of this beloved Festival of Lights. Diwali, the revered Hindu ‘festival of lights’, celebrates the triumph of light over darkness, and good over evil. It’s a time for reflection, rejuvenation, and celebration for millions across the world. This year, the local BAPS Mandir presented an experience that seamlessly wove age-old traditions with contemporary expressions of faith, culture, and community. “I just love the fact that this is such a family and community-oriented space. I think that oftentimes when you are out in the world, you can feel disconnected or that you do not belong anywhere. Spaces like this bring people together and remind them that they are connected, and that there are people out there that share the same traditions and values. That is really important especially for the youth,” shared Karina Villa, IL State Senator representing the 25th District. Devotees and visitors were welcomed with a vibrant and traditional reception at the mandir’s entrance, where colorful decorations, including a beautifully intricate rangoli, an ornate floor design

This artistic display not only added to the festive atmosphere, but also served as a fitting introduction to the rich cultural heritage celebrated locally and nationally at the BAPS Swaminarayan Akshardham in Robbinsville, NJ, a landmark of Hindu architecture and culture. Another awe-inspiring feature was the ‘Annakut’, where hundreds of vegetarian dishes were offered as a token of gratitude to the divine, symbolizing abundance and the community’s unwavering devotion for God and for the New Year, celebrated by some Indian-Americans from the northern and western regions of India. Devotees, young and old, had poured weeks of preparation into ensuring the Annakut was a feast for both the eyes and the soul. “The annakut preparation begins very early in the morning for us,” explained Jasmine Patel, a BAPS youth volunteer. “The vegetarian food is traditionally arranged in tiers or steps in front of the sacred images of God. Today
over 1,000 food items have been offered on this day of celebration and appreciation.” For families, volunteers organized an array of children’s activities, allowing younger generations to bond with their cultural roots while partaking in the festivities. These encompassed storytelling sessions, craft workshops, and traditional games to engage all that took part in the celebrations. Similar to this local community celebration, BAPS mandirs across North America welcomed visitors with the glow of lights, bright colors, and a festive ambiance as they took in the colorful and joyful spirit of Diwali. The multiple days of Diwali are steeped in traditions and rituals that symbolize new beginnings and a renewed commitment to family. The spiritual head of BAPS, His Holiness Mahant Swami Maharaj sent blessings to all devotees and well-wishers for Diwali. He encouraged all to find the light within them and make it shine brighter by incorporating unity, values, spirituality, and a spirit of giving. Reflecting on the day, the spirit of Diwali was palpably felt not just in the surroundings of the mandir, but in the hearts and souls of every visitor. The celebration marked a renewal of finding the good within and maintaining goodwill towards all around us. The BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir remains a pillar of culture, community unity, and spiritual enrichment. As the lights of Diwali continue to glow within our memories, the mandir extends its deepest gratitude to all who made this celebration a cherished moment in time.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson HiIndia Newsdesk
CHICAGO, IL- Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson has announced that migrants arriving in the city will now be limited to a maximum of 60 days in city shelters. This decision comes after the Chicago City Council approved a 2024 budget of $150 million to support over 21,200 migrants sent from the southern border, largely by Texas Governor Greg Abbott. Mayor Johnson emphasized the importance of not neglecting the needs of Chicagoans while addressing the migrant crisis. The move is seen as a fiscally responsible
as Chicago expects to spend over $363 million by year-end to care for migrants, with limited federal assistance. Mayor Johnson aims to pressure all levels of government to expedite the transition of over 1,800 migrants currently in police stations or makeshift shelters into more permanent housing. Chicago will continue to maintain its status as a welcoming and sanctuary city. Although the mayor did not provide specific details about what will happen when migrants reach the 60-day limit, his deputy chief of staff clarified that nobody would be evicted from city shelters as long as they were making progress towards finding permanent housing. Similar to New York City’s approach, Chicago plans to offer expanded services to migrants, helping them obtain work permits and permanent housing more efficiently. The city also intends to impose fines on bus companies transporting migrants that violate curfew or landing zone regulations, while providing additional staff to assist migrants in reaching their final destinations if they choose not to stay in Chicago. Mayor Johnson will provide further details of this new approach alongside state and county officials in the coming days.

Seattle Councilmember Kshama Sawant On Her Historic Ceasefire Resolution

n Tuesday, Indian American councilmember Kshama Sawant along with working p e o p l e , a n d a nt i - w a r activists managed to win a historic victory. The activists were able to get Democrats on the Seattle City Council to pass a resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza, humanitarian aid to the Palestinians, and release of all hostages. The vote was resounding 6 yes, 0 no, apart from 3 abstentions. For councilmember Sawant who represents district 3 in Central Seattle, the victory did not come easy. Just two weeks ago a similar such motion on ceasefire resolution was not seconded even by a single Democrat. Talking about the resolution, Sawant says, “Our movement will claim this historic victory today and fight on. What we won today, is a reflection of the balance of forces right now, and it shows we need an even stronger movement in order to address the root causes of the conflict—the Israeli occupation and the US military aid that facilitates the brutalization of the Palestinian people.” Sawant’s resolution was the product of debate and input from numerous community members, in Seattle and Gaza, over the last three weeks. Sawant says, “The final adopted resolution was amended in two significant ways by Democrats, who apparently developed the amendment behind closed doors and only released it two and a half hours before the City Council meeting. New York: (IANS) The US Departments of Labor and Homeland Security have announced an additional 64,716 H-2B temporary non-agricultural worker visas for FY 2024. This allotment is in addition to the Congressionally-mandated 66,000 H-2B visas that are available each fiscal year, and permits employers to temporarily hire non-citizens to plug worker shortages in the US. "By making these supplemental visas available at the outset of FY 2024, the Departments will help ensure US businesses with workforce needs are able to plan ahead and find the seasonal and temporary workers they need," the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced this week. The H-2B supplemental includes an allocation of 20,000 visas to workers from Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador,
El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, and Honduras. In addition to the 20,000 countryspecific allocation, 44,716 supplemental visas are available to returning workers who received H-2B visas, or were otherwise granted H-2B status during one of the last three fiscal years. The rule allocates these supplemental visas for returning workers between the first half and second half of the fiscal year to account for the need for additional seasonal and other temporary workers over the course of the year, with a portion of the second half allocation reserved to meet the demand for workers during the summer season. The semiannual cap of 33,000 H-2B visas authorised under the Immigration and Nationality Act (statutory cap) for the first half of FY 2024 was reached on October 11, 2023. These supplemental visas are available only to the US businesses that are suffering irreparable harm or will suffer impending irreparable harm without the ability to employ all the H-2B workers requested in their petition, as attested by the employer on a new attestation form.
WASHINGTON, DC- The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has expanded the availability of myProgress, previously known as personalized processing times, to Form I-821 for Temporary Protected Status and Form I-485 for Permanent Residence or Adjusting Status. Initially, myProgress will be accessible to familybased or Afghan special immigrant I-485 applicants. myProgress offers applicants personalized estimates for the wait time for key milestones and actions in their case, including the final decision. These estimates are based on historical data and case type but do not guarantee timing and cannot account for all unique application processing factors. The introduction of myProgress aims to enhance the applicant experience by proactively addressing concerns about the status of their benefit requests during the waiting period. This aligns with USCIS’ commitment to supporting Executive Order 14058 on improving federal customer experience and service delivery while minimizing the need for case status inquiries. It is part of USCIS’ Strategic Plan to improve service for its stakeholders and increase transparency in the adjudication process.

The event, held at the Balaji Temple Auditorium in Bridgewater, brought together over 400 attendees, including volunteers, business entrepreneurs, and government officials. How tech devices impact kids’ brain functioning Children getting more prone to Type 2 diabetes : experts Medical experts at the King George's Medical University (KGMU) have said that more and more children are getting prone to type 2 Diabetes. Kauser Usman, senior faculty member, department of medicine, KGMU, said, "The youngest child I have diagnosed and treated for diabetes was a Class 7 student, who had no family history of diabetes. There has been a rise in the number of children coming to OPD being diagnosed for diabetes, without any family history." Doctors said changing habits/lifestyle is to be blamed more than genetics. "Children are now having mainly food outside the house and even avoid bringing tiffin to school. Busy parents also give money rather than tiffin. Besides, they are under tremendous pressure to perform. The aim is to decide on a profession such as medicine or engineering right from Class 4 or 5. During our time, all this pressure came only after Class 10," said NS Verma, HoD, physiology, KGMU. Doctors said that children getting diabetes is a major drawback for society. "First, if there were no other diabetes patients, the family history for diabetes starts, secondly and most importantly, the productive age between 17 years and 40 years remains compromised due to the disease," said Usman. He suggested exercising daily for at least 40 minutes, maintaining a diet chart and eating what suits your body best.
T
ime spent watching television or playing computer games has measurable and long-term effects on children’s brain function, according to a review of 23 years of neuroimaging research, which while showing negative impacts also demonstrates some positive effects. However, the researchers stop short of advocating limits on screen time, which they say can lead to confrontation. Instead, they urged policymakers to help parents navigate the digital world by promoting programmes which support positive brain development. In particular, the research finds screen time leads to changes in the pre-frontal cortex of the brain, which is the base of executive functions such as working memory and the ability to plan or to respond flexibly to situations. It also finds impacts on the parietal lobe, which helps us to process touch, pressure, heat, cold, and pain; the temporal lobe, which is important for memory, hearing and language; and the occipital lobe, which helps us to interpret visual information. “It should be recognised by both educators and caregivers that children's cognitive development may be influenced by their digital experiences,” said Chair Professor Hui Li, from the Faculty of Education at The

The study, published in the peer-reviewed journal Early Education and Development, is based on an analysis of 33 studies which used neuroimaging technology to measure the impact of digital technology on the brains of children under the age of 12. In total, more than 30,000 participants are included.

Bellinger, chief scientific cholesterol, this study reveals the officer at Verve Therapeutics. potential for a new treatment option -- The study presented at the American
Heart Association's Scientific Sessions 2023 in Philadelphia, described the first human trial of VERVE-101, which included 7 men and 2 women in New Zealand, and the UK. Each participant was diagnosed with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia -- meaning they inherited one gene for the disorder from one parent -- and had extremely high bad cholesterol levels (average measure of 201 mg/dL) despite taking the maximum-tolerated LDL cholesterollowering medication. The majority of study participants had pre-existing severe coronary artery disease and had already experienced a heart attack, or undergone coronary bypass surgery or stenting to allow adequate blood flow to heart muscle. None were taking PCSK9 inhibitors while enrolled in the study. Each participant received a single intravenous infusion of VERVE-101, with the first cohort receiving a low dose of 0.1 mg/kg and other cohorts receiving
escalating doses, after consultation with an independent safety monitoring board. The highest dose received was 0.6 mg/kg. The study found that the highest-two VERVE-101 doses reduced LDL-C by 39 per cent and 48 per cent in the two participants receiving 0.45 mg/kg of the drug and 55 per cent in the sole participant receiving 0.6 mg/kg. It reduced blood PCSK9 protein levels by 47 per cent, 59 per cent and 84 per cent in the three participants receiving the 0.45 mg/kg or 0.6 mg/kg doses. The drug also reduced LDL-C at six months in the sole participant receiving 0.6 mg/kg, with follow-up ongoing. To date, most adverse events that occurred in the study were mild and unrelated to treatment. Serious adverse cardiovascular events, specifically a cardiac arrest, a myocardial infarction and an arrhythmia, occurred in two patients who had underlying advanced coronary artery disease, the study showed.
