Trump election: Michigan supreme Florida shooting: fatally shot court rejects ballot disqualification bid Sister over Christmas HiIndia Newsdesk
Michigan's Supreme Court has refused to hear an appeal by voters in the US state to disqualify Donald Trump from next year's presidential primary. They sought to invoke a clause in the US Constitution, barring anyone who has engaged in insurrection, over Mr Trump's role in the 2021 Capitol riots. The decision comes days after Colorado became the first state to rule that Mr Trump was not an eligible candidate. Michigan is considered a battleground state in the 2024 general election. Tradit iona l ly vot ing D emo crat, Michigan narrowly supported Mr Trump, a Republican, in his successful 2016 presidential campaign. But the state reverted to the Democrats when Joe Biden carried it by a margin of nearly

3% in 2020. Unlike in Colorado, the Michigan bid failed early on in the process, and the appeal to the state's supreme court was seen as having little chance of success. Mr Trump praised the decision on Truth Social on Wednesday, calling it a "pathetic gambit to rig the Election". The ruling means that his name will appear on the ballot for the Republican primary,
Ukraine war: US releases last military aid for Kyiv for now

Two teenage girls were stabbed by a man while ranting that he wants "all white people dead" at a New York restaurant on Christmas. The girls from South America were with their family at the Grand Central Terminal in Manhattan when the incident occurred on Monday. The girls - 14 and 16-year-olds - suffered non-lifethreatening wounds from the stabbing, the New York Post reported quoting police and sources. Police sources said Steven Hutcherson, the 36-year-old suspect, allegedly also yelled, "I want to sit next to the crackers."
set to be held on 27 February. Pro-democracy advocacy group Free Speech for People filed the lawsuit in September, and the group said in a statement that the ruling was a narrow and technical one that applied only to the state's Republican primary. "However, the Michigan Supreme Court did not rule out that the question of Donald Trump's disqualification for engaging in insurrection against the US Constitution may be resolved at a later stage," said Ron Fein, Free Speech For People's legal director. Lower courts in Michigan rejected the case on procedural grounds and did not examine the question of whether the Capitol riot 6 January 2021 qualified as an insurrection under the law and whether Mr Trump played a part in it. Supreme Court Justice Elizabeth Welch explained that Michigan's laws were different from Colorado's.

The White House has approved another tranche of US military aid to Ukraine worth some $250m (£195m). The latest package includes air defence, artillery and small arms ammunition, and anti-tank weapons, US officials say. But it marks the last funding available without fresh approval from Congress, where talks have stalled. Ukraine has warned that the war effort
and its public finances are at risk if further Western aid is not forthcoming. Amid a stalled counter-offensive in the east of the country and a little-changed line of control, Ukrainian officials are facing the prospect of a slowdown in aid from allies in Washington and Europe. Although the Ukraine war effort has broad support in the US Congress, an agreement on further arms has been stopped by Republicans who insist that tougher security measures on the US-Mexico border must be part of any military aid deal. An emergency spending measure that would have provided $50bn for Ukraine and $14bn for Israel was defeated in the Senate earlier this month, with every Republican voting against it - along with Bernie Sanders, an independent who usually votes with Democrats but has expressed concerns about Israel's war against Hamas.
FBI investigate threats against Colorado judges who ruled against Donald Trump HiIndia Newsdesk
Police in Colorado are investigating threats made against judges who ruled Donald Trump cannot be listed on the state's presidential primary ballot. Denver Police said they was providing extra patrols around the homes of justices in the city. The Denver FBI office said it was assisting local police. Colorado's Supreme Court ruled last week that Mr Trump is ineligible under a US Constitution clause that bars candidates who engage in insurrection. Mr Trump and his campaign criticised the 4-3 decision, calling it "deeply
flawed", and his campaign has vowed to appeal to the US Supreme Court. The ruling relied on Section 3 of the Constitution's 14th Amendment, which was enacted after the US Civil War to block Confederate secessionists from returning to power in the reunified country. The provision states that any official who "engaged in insurrection or rebellion" is disqualified from holding federal office.
The majority on the Colorado court ruled that Mr Trump's actions during the Capitol riot on 6 January 2021 amounted to insurrection. After news of the ruling came out, a slew of threats against the judges were posted online, according to Advance Democracy, a non-partisan research group that monitors proTrump networks. Some of the posts included personal details, such as the addresses and phone numbers of the judges, the group said. Threats to hang and shoot the judges were posted to X, formerly known as Twitter, as well as the messaging service Telegram, the Trump-owned Truth Social network and several other fringe websites. Some have been taken down, while some were still live on Tuesday.

Two teenage brothers have been arrested after their sister was shot and died during a row over Christmas presents. The 23-year-old was shot in the chest by her teenage brother while she had her 10-month-old son in a carrier, the Florida sheriff 's office said. The boy was then shot by his older brother who took out his own gun, Pinellas County Sheriff 's Office said. It added that the shooting followed an argument over who was getting more presents. Sheriff Bob Gualtieri told reporters the older teenager, aged 15, ran from the scene and tossed his gun away. The younger brother, aged 14, was taken to hospital in a stable condition and will be taken into custody when he is released, police said.
Supreme Court declines to fast-track Trump immunity case
HiIndia Newsdesk
The US Supreme Court has declined, for now, to decide whether former President Donald Trump has immunity from prosecution for allegedly trying to overturn the 2020 election. Mr Trump's efforts to delay his trial appear to be working, as the case must now wind through the appeals process. Special counsel Jack Smith had asked the court to take up the case in an expedited manner. Mr Trump was indicted on election subversion charges earlier this year. The court did not explain its decision, instead issuing an unsigned order saying that Mr Smith's petition "is denied". The ruling is a setback for Mr Smith, who had asked the Supreme Court to intervene early for fear that the appeals process could delay the start of Mr Trump's trial, which was scheduled to begin on 4 March in Washington DC. Mr Smith's office declined to comment on the ruling. Mr Trump is being investigated for his alleged attempts to overturn the election leading up to the 6 January Capitol riot.

"Our relations have been very strong, very steady. And I think we have lived up to a special and privileged strategic partnership. This year we have already met six times, and this is our 7th meeting," he said, noting that forums like G20, the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, ASEAN, and BRICS allowed many more and many regular contacts. Paris, France: The Eiffel Tower, one of the world's top tourist attractions, was closed Wednesday after staff went on strike, the landmark's operator said. The one-day stoppage on the 100th anniversary of the death of engineer Gustave Eiffel, who built the tower, was to protest against "the current way it is managed", the hard-left CGT union said in a statement. The tower's operator SETE was "headed for disaster", it said.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Wednesday said that the relationship between India and Russia has been "very strong, very steady" as he met his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov to discuss bilateral cooperation in different spheres, the international strategic situation, conflicts and tensions.

Israel's war with Hamas militants in Gaza will continue for "many more months", Israel's army chief has said. "There are no magic solutions," Herzi Halevi told reporters. On Monday PM Benjamin Netanyahu warned that the campaign was "not close to being over". Israel says it hit more than 100 sites on Tuesday. It is reportedly extending ground operations to central Gaza. Gaza's Hamas-run health ministry says 20,915 Palestinians have been killed in more than 11 weeks of fighting. The war began on 7 October after Hamas led a
wave of deadly attacks on communities inside Israel. About 1.9 million have been internally displaced by Israeli bombardments since then, the UN says. Juliette Touma, a spokeswoman for the Unwra told the BBC: "We're seeing very worrying reports of hunger and starvation in some places, and meanwhile the war continues, the displacement continues and UN shelters are overcrowded and overwhelmed." Last week US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken called on Israel to lower the intensity of its strikes to limit "harm done to civilians".

New Delhi, Dec 27 (IANS) In a heartwarming incident, a Sikh taxi driver in Australia returned around AUD 8,000 (Rs 4.53 lakh) to a passenger who left the cash in the back seat of his cab. Charanjit Singh Atwal, who has been working as a taxi driver in Melbourne for over three decades, said in an Instagram post by @bramalea.rd that he took the money to the police as soon as he found it. The Good Samaritan said that the thought of keeping the cash never crossed his mind, and that he keeps finding things left behind by passengers in his car. When he was asked if he got a reward from the owner, he replied, "No, I don't need a reward". As the story went viral on social media, netizens applauded Atwal, saying "Singh is king." “He is blessed, and his honesty and good deed will be returned to him tenfold,” an Instagram user said. "It’s always the good deeds, social services and sharing food etc that comes to mind when I hear about Punjabis, I hope and wish it remains like that," another user commented. In contrast, Pratik Patel was taken into custody a day later at the County Prosecutor’s Office. Following their arrests, all three defendants were transferred to the Hudson County Correctional Facility, awaiting their preliminary court hearings.

Kothandaraman cites the need to streamline operations by discontinuing contract manufacturing at two U.S. locations and resizing others. Despite
this move, the company aims to maintain a hiring and travel freeze through 2024 and reduce discretionary spending. Enphase, known for its solar micro-inverters, battery storage, and EV charging stations, has shipped over 48 million microinverters globally. Kothandaraman attributed the decision to challenges in the solar market, including decreased consumer demand in the U.S. due to high-interest rates and California’s NEM 3.0 transition. To align with anticipated demand, the company plans to reduce its manufacturing capacity from 10 million to 7.25 million units per quarter by closing sites in Romania and Wisconsin and resizing others.

New Delhi: Congress MP Rahul Gandhi tried to reach out to Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar Thursday evening, amid talk of yet more rifts in the INDIA bloc ahead of next year's election. Sources told NDTV Mr Gandhi could not speak to the Janata Dal (United) boss since he was in a meeting and then, when Nitish Kumar was free, Mr Gandhi was in the middle of a party huddle. The two are, however, expected to talk later today. The agenda of the call, when it happens, is not known, but there is speculation it will be on the fallout of Wednesday's meeting, at which Mr Kumar seemed to be overlooked as a possible
INDIA bloc convener and/or prime ministerial candidate. Meanwhile, Congress boss Mallikarjun Kharge has spoken to Nitish Kumar, and Rahul Gandhi has spoken to NCP patriarch Sharad Pawar, in what is being seen as damagecontrol for INDIA. Sources told NDTV Nitish Kumar clashed with INDIA leaders on several issues at Wednesday's meet, including renaming the bloc as 'Bharat'. That proposal was swiftly nixed by the Congress' Sonia Gandhi. He reportedly also got angry with Manoj Jha of the Rashtriya Janata Dal, a state ally, because Mr Jha translated his speech from Hindi to Tamil for the benefit of political leaders from the DMK. There was also talk Nitish Kumar lashed out at the Congress after its dismal performance in November's Assembly polls, which were widely seen as a dry run of INDIA's pull with voters. The Congress was routed in Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan - heartland states INDIA must win (at least some anyway) in order to defeat the BJP - after seat-sharing squabbles with allies.

The All India Tennis Association (AITA) on Tuesday sought the Sports Ministry's advise on the national team's travel to Pakistan for the Davis Cup World Group 1 Play-off tie against the neighbours at Islamabad in February next year. The AITA's move came after the International Tennis Federation Tribunal rejected its request to shift the tie to a neutral venue. "We have asked for Sports Ministry's advise as to what is the policy on travelling to Pakistan. It's
a World Cup of tennis. We are awaiting reply," AITA Secretary General Anil Dhupar told PTI. The tie is scheduled to be played at the Pakistan Sports Complex on February 3 and 4. Dhupar had earlier told PTI that the AITA will approach the Sports Ministry on Monday and seek guidance if they can send a team. India and Pakistan were last drawn against each other in 2019 and the tie was scheduled to take place across the border as the Indians had hosted the previous encounter in Mumbai in 2006. But the AITA managed to shift the tie to a neutral venue, Kazakhstan, citing political tensions between the two countries. The Indian Davis Cup team last travelled to Pakistan way back in 1964 when Akhtar Ali, Premjit Lall and SP Misra helped the visitors win the tie 4-0 in Lahore. The Indian cricket team last toured Pakistan in 2006 but since then the two sides have not played a bilateral series for more than a decade due to diplomatic tensions between the neighbouring nations.

"These precision strikes are a response to a series of attacks against US personnel in Iraq and Syria by Iranian-sponsored militias, including an attack by Iran-affiliated Kataeb Hezbollah and affiliated groups on Arbil Air Base earlier today," he said. Austin added that Washington "will not hesitate to take necessary action to defend the US, our troops, and our interests. There is no higher priority. This morning CPI (M) leader Brinda Karat underlined her party's decision to skip a programme that she described as the "politicisation of a religious programme". "No, we will not go. We respect the religious beliefs... but they are connecting a religious programme with politics. "Using religion as a political

On Tuesday, KJo took to his Instagram and shared a picture of himself with Alia and Ranveer Singh, who served as the lead pair on ‘Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani’. He heaped praises on Alia and Ranveer for their amazing performances. But, one thing that many people on the Internet resonated with was KJo calling ‘Highway’ the true launch of Alia. He penned a long note along with the picture, as he wrote: “Before the year wraps, I felt like sharing this with all of you… I hadn’t directed Alia since 2012 and the day she walked onto set In her @manishmalhotra05 plus @ mickeycontractor plus #flavian look I knew we had the Rani I had always envisaged …. What followed was an actor I wasn’t prepared for…. And I can take zero credit … will always be grateful to Imtiaz Ali for taking her on a highway of life and moulding her into the actor she finally became. SOTY is technically her launch but her true launch as an artist will always be highway… Alia is such a pride and pleasure on a film set (sic).” “She had a ticking mind constantly questioning Rani and trying her best to make her strong and yet identifiable and likeable … again for that I take no credit
“Ranveer Singh! The irreplaceable force of nature…. The actor prepares and never comes in your way … he never ever let me know the extent he was prepping to play Rocky Randhawa… he planned his prep with my team , spent months in Delhi, hung out in west Delhi, met the West Delhi gram boys , worked on his dialect like an obsessed artist ! Kept improvising dialogues till it reached perfection for him.” that is her evolution as an artist! Was blessed to have her as Rani Chatterjee and I do hope her character keeps resonating …. Love you @aliaabhatt.” The director was also in awe of Ranveer, who he feels is a terrific performer. Heaping praise on Ranveer, he wrote, “Ranveer Singh! Kept improvising dialogues till it reached perfection for him.” “I saw this as a bystander, a filmmaker in awe and was blown away by his process ( which initially can be daunting but when you see the dailies you’re sold and he’s won your heart) I feel like the perception of RS is so different from his labour and passion as a true artist! You see designer clothes on magazine covers I see a hungry actor only seeking love and validation from his audiences.” “ROCKY RANDHWA and RANVEER were irreplaceable! (styled impeccably by @ekalakhani)No one could have done what he did! Absolutely No one and I feel grateful for him and Alia! The three of us also built a friendship for the ages as a trio! This is not just an appreciation post as a filmmaker but a post of gratitude to the universe that bought these blessed artists to play my leads! Joe Biden calls for probe into US Steel sale to Japan's Nippon

The White House says Nippon Steel's plan to buy US Steel should be probed on national security grounds, even though Japan is a "close ally". It also expressed concern about the deal's potential impact on supply chain reliability in a Thursday statement. The $15bn (£12bn) purchase of the 122-year-old steelmaker would create one of the world's biggest steel companies. But the powerful United Steelworkers (USW) union also criticised the deal as "shortsighted". In a statement, Joe Biden's national economic adviser, Lael Brainard, said the US president believed that "the purchase of this iconic Americanowned company by a foreign entity— even one from a close ally—appears to deserve serious scrutiny". Ms Brainard added that President Biden views US Steel as a "core component" of overall domestic steel production. The USW has welcomed the White House's statement, saying that the deal could "impact the future of domestic steel production".

Danish shipping giant Maersk has said it is preparing to resume shipping operations through the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. The move follows the deployment of an international military operation to prevent attacks on commercial ships by Yemen's Houthi rebels. Several firms have paused shipments via the Red Sea following the attacks. German shipping firm Hapag-Lloyd has said it will decide on Wednesday whether to resume using the route. The Red Sea is one of the world's most important routes for oil and liquefied
natural gas shipments, as well as for consumer goods. It is bookended by the Bab al-Mandab Strait - also known as the Gate of Tears - in the south near the coast of Yemen and the Suez Canal in the north. Houthis have declared their backing for Hamas in its war with the Israelis, and the rebels based in Yemen have said they are targeting vessels which they believe are heading for Israel. Some ships have come under attack from drones and rockets. The alternative route, around the Cape of Good Hope, adds about 3,500 nautical miles to the journey. This has led to fears of disruption to the supply of goods transported through the Suez Canal, and an increase in prices to cover the higher transport costs.

I am putting my medal on the letter written to PM Modi. I will not take this medal back home, says Punia Olympic wrestling medallist Bajrang Punia on Friday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi saying he was returning his Padma Shri in protest against the election of Sanjay Singh, an alleged loyalist of BJP parliamentarian and sexual harassment accused Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, as Wrestling Federation of India president. Around 5pm, police stopped Punia on Kartavya Path (Rajpath) as he headed for Parliament to meet Modi and hand over his Padma Shri medal and the letter. The wrestler then placed the medal on the pavement. “I am putting my medal on the letter written to PM Modi. I will not take this medal back home,” he told reporters. The police picked up both the letter and the medal. Several top men and women wrestlers had protested at Jantar Mantar for weeks earlier this year against Brij Bhushan, then WFI chief, accusing him of sexually harassing women wrestlers. After the protest was forcibly broken up, some of them had travelled to Haridwar to toss their medals into the Ganga but were dissuaded by well-wishers. Punia’s open letter to Modi, written in Hindi, says: “I can’t live my life as a Padma Shri awardee while our women wrestlers are insulted. Hence I return this award to you.” It adds: “Sports have empowered our women athletes and changed their lives but the situation is such that the women who could have been the brand ambassadors of Beti Bachao Beti Padhao are now leaving the sport. And we, the wrestlers who were awarded, could not do anything.”

New Delhi, Dec 23 (IANS) As the Narendra Modi government is set to complete its second term in office at the Centre, with several months left before the 2024 general elections scheduled to be held in May this year, aiming to target 350-plus Lok Sabha seats. The year 2024 is considered extremely crucial for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) since the party wants to consolidate power right from winning elections at the panchayat level while marching towards the Parliament. The BJP not only wants to form a government at the Centre with absolute majority for the third time by winning the 2024 general elections as it will send out a clear message that the people
of India have clearly reposed their faith in the government at the Centre under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi, adding that there is no political alternative to counter the BJP's politics of development in the country. After BJP comes back to power at the Centre by securing a third term in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the saffron party will create a new record in the country equalling that of the country's
first Prime Minister and Congress leader Jawaharlal Nehru, who became the PM for three consecutive terms by winning three consecutive Lok Sabha elections after India's independence in 1947. By coming back to power in 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will also equalise that record. The BJP, which single-handedly won 303 seats in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls by securing nearly 38 per cent votes, has set a target of winning 350 plus seats in BJP has set a target of 350 plus seats in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. For this, the party is working on several fronts simultaneusly. If BJP alone achieves the target of 350 plus seats then together with NDA allies, its seat tally in the upcoming general elections will reach around 400.

Georgia-Based Tax Preparer Of Indian Descent Sentenced To Jail For Tax Evasion HiIndia Newsdesk
STATESBORO, GA – A 56-year-old tax return preparer, Samir Patel, has been sentenced to two years in prison after admitting guilt to tax evasion charges. In addition to his prison term, Patel was mandated to pay roughly $550,000 in restitution to the U.S., along with a fine amounting to $95,000. Once he completes his prison sentence, he will also be subjected to three years of supervised release. Jill E. Steinberg, the US Attorney for the Southern District of Georgia, emphasized the critical role of lawful tax participation. She stated, “The nation’s financial system relies significantly on citizens’ honest participation in the income tax process. Those who sidestep their obligations create undue burdens on others. This verdict underscores the severe repercussions for attempting to circumvent the system.” Court documents and testimonies reveal that Patel, while working as a tax return preparer for a renowned national
tax preparation business, acquired a franchise located in Claxton back in 2015. As the franchise owner, he took on responsibilities such as hiring, training, and supervising other tax preparers, while also directly managing customer tax returns. However, Patel knowingly submitted deceptive income tax returns, omitting over $1.28 million in income, notably nearly $1.18 million from a company named S&W Amusements. This evasion spanned the tax years of 2015, 2016, and 2017. S&W Amusements was identified as a company that installed coin-operated amusement machines in various convenience stores and gas stations. In light of his conviction, one of the stipulations of Patel’s sentence is a prohibition from preparing tax returns for others or any entities he doesn’t have a vested interest in during his supervised release period.

US President Joe Biden has announced pardons for certain federal marijuana convictions and clemency for 11 people imprisoned for non-violent drug crimes. The executive order covers those convicted under the federal law of simple possession, attempted simple possession or use of marijuana. It also applies to certain offences on federal lands. Mr Biden said in a statement: "Too many lives have been upended because of our failed approach to marijuana." "It's time that we right these wrongs." Mr Biden's more lenient approach marks a turnaround for the politician who as a senator wrote a 1994 crime bill that is widely blamed for mass incarceration, disproportionately of black people, for drug offences. The White House said thousands of people would be eligible for the pardons. They must submit applications to the justice department. The Democratic president's action expands on an executive order from last year, when his administration pardoned thousands of people who were convicted under federal law of possessing small amounts of marijuana. Twenty-four states and Washington DC have decriminalised or legalised marijuana use in some or all circumstances. But it remains illegal at the federal level. Earlier this year, the Health and Human S er vices Administration recommended that the Drug Enforcement Administration loosen federal restrictions on marijuana. Mr Biden's order does not cover individuals who have been convicted of

The sentence continues to affect her life, and she noted that individuals with criminal records may struggle to find housing or jobs because a conviction will appear on a background check. "I really wish he [Mr Biden] would just sit down and talk to someone who has an incarcerated parent, that has grown up without their parent because they're incarcerated, but at the same time can now walk down the street and see multiple dispensaries selling the same plant that their parents did," she said. The executive order, in Ms Shepard's view, was "just not enough".
state-level crimes, but he urged governors to take similar action. Sarah Gersten, executive director and general counsel for the Last Prisoner Project, called the executive order "largely symbolic". "As the president has acknowledged, the vast majority of people convicted of cannabis are at the state level," Ms Gersten said. She added that while "the number of people who have federal offences are very low, a pardon at the federal level doesn't effectuate the kind of record clearance we want to see". The order also did not cover other marijuana-related offences that carry prison time. It would not pardon, for example, Stephanie Shepard, the director of advocacy for the Last Prisoners Project. She was imprisoned for conspiracy to

JN.1: Is mass testing for Covid necessary in India?
New Delhi: (IANS) Despite Centre's advisory amid a spike in Covid-19 cases in India, testing rate in states remain low. Experts here on Monday said that while mass testing may not be practical looking at the logistics, it may help understand the exact cause of the respiratory illnesses currently seen across the country. According to Union Health Ministry data, India recorded a single-day rise of 628 new Covid-19 cases while the active caseload jumped to 4,054. The total fatalities were recorded at 5,33,334 with one new death reported from Kerala in the previous 24 hours, the data updated at 8 a.m. showed. As per a recent survey conducted by LocalCircles, only 1 in 9 Indians with Covid symptoms are taking a RT-PCR test. It noted that due to this India runs the risk of late identification of JN.1 variant in communities which can be an issue if it is causing severe disease in some people.
