Major Alabama hospital pauses IVF after court rules frozen embryos are children HiIndia Newsdesk

A ruling from the Alabama Supreme Court that frozen embryos are considered children, and that a person could be held liable for accidentally destroying them, has opened up a new front in the US battle over reproductive medicine The southern US state's largest hospital has paused its in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) services in the wake of the decision, over fears it could expose them to criminal prosecution. But it said it would halt the next step in the IVF process, in which the eggs are fertilised with sperm before being implanted into the uterus. "We are saddened that this will impact our patients' attempt to have a baby through IVF," the leading state medical provider said in a statement.

"But we must evaluate the potential that our patients and our physicians could be prosecuted criminally or face punitive damages for following the standard of care for IVF treatments." Medical experts and reproductive advocacy groups warned the ruling could have negative consequences for fertility treatments in Alabama and beyond. Conservative groups welcomed the ruling, arguing that even the tiniest embryo deserved legal protection.

Beijing has repeatedly alleged that Chinese nationals with valid travel documents have been subject to aggressive interrogations and deportations at US airports. Beijing: China's public security minister urged the US homeland security secretary to stop alleged "harassment" of Chinese students entering the United States in a meeting between the two in Vienna, Beijing's state media reported Monday. In a readout of talks Sunday between Wang Xiaohong and Alejandro Mayorkas, Beijing urged Washington "to stop harassing and checking Chinese students for no apparent reason", state news agency Xinhua said. Beijing has repeatedly alleged that Chinese nationals with valid travel documents have been subject to aggressive interrogations and deportations at US airports, with its embassy in Washington last month urging Chinese travellers to avoid the capital's Dulles airport. In his meeting with Mayorkas, Wang urged the United States to "ensure that Chinese citizens enjoy fair entry treatment and full dignity," according to Xinhua.

US Says Russia Building Space Nuclear Weapon, Putin Denies Claim

HiIndia Newsdesk

Moscow: President Vladimir Putin said on Tuesday that Russia was against the deployment of nuclear weapons in space, and his defence minister flatly denied

U.S. claims that Russia was developing a nuclear capability for space. A source familiar with the matter told Reuters that Washington believes Moscow is developing a space-based anti-satellite nuclear weapon whose detonation could disrupt everything from military communications to phone-based ride services. "Our position is clear and transparent: We have always been categorically against and are now against the deployment of nuclear weapons in space," Putin told Sergei Shoigu, his defence minister.

Two teenagers have been arrested for breaking into a Secret Service car assigned to US President Joe Biden's granddaughter late last year. An agent tasked with protecting Naomi Biden fired his weapon at the thieves during the incident in Washington DC's wealthy Georgetown area. Ms Biden, 30, was not with the agents when the attempted robbery took place on the night of 12 November.

Israel Gaza: China condemns US veto of call for immediate ceasefire at UN

12 killed in Mexico gang clash: President

HiIndia Newsdesk

China has sharply criticised the US for vetoing a United Nations (UN) Security Council resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire in Gaza Beijing said the move sent the "wrong message" and effectively gave a "green light to the continued slaughter". The White House said the Algerianproposed resolution would "jeopardise" talks to end the war. The US has proposed its own temporary ceasefire resolution, which also warned Israel not to invade the city of Rafah. Algeria's resolution was backed by 13 of the 15 members of the UN Security Council - with the UK abstaining. Under the council's rules, any resolution that is vetoed by one of its five permanent members - which includes the US - is immediately thrown out. Israel launched its operations in Gaza

The southern city, which borders Egypt, was home to only 250,000 people before the war. Kiev: (IANS) The first group of four Ukrainian pilots will complete their training on the F-16 jets by summer, the media reported. The pilots started their training to fly F-16 jets in October last year in the US city of Tucson, Arizona, Xinhua news agency reported. The second and the third groups of four Ukrainian pilots each are expected to complete their F-16 training by the end of August.

China renews orange alert for cold waves

Japanese mafia boss conspired to traffic nuclear materials, says US

HiIndia Newsdesk

Beijing: (IANS) China's national observatory has renewed an orange alert for cold waves in various regions of south China, forecasting sharp temperature drops. The orange alert, the highest for cold waves, is for the period from 8 p.m. Wednesday to 8 a.m. Friday. Many parts of south China will see temperatures fall significantly, with average daily temperatures or lowest temperatures declining by 6 to 12 degrees Celsius.

US prosecutors have charged an alleged member of the Japanese mafia with conspiring to traffic nuclear materials. Takeshi Ebisawa, 60, tried to sell uranium and plutonium that he believed would be transferred to Iran to build a nuclear bomb, it is alleged. Mr Ebisawa and a Thai co-defendant were previously hit with weapons and drug charges in April 2022. He faces life imprisonment

if convicted of the latest charges. US authorities say Mr Ebisawa - who is being held in a Brooklyn jail - is a senior figure in the Japanese organised crime syndicate, known as the Yakuza, with operations in Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Thailand and the US. The US Department of Justice said Mr Ebisawa and his "confederates showed samples of nuclear materials in Thailand" to an undercover agent from the US DEA. The agent was posing as a drugs and weapons trafficker with links to an Iranian general. The nuclear samples - which came from Myanmar - were seized by Thai authorities and transferred to US investigators. A US laboratory confirmed the material contained uranium and weapons-grade plutonium.

Mexico City: (IANS) At least 12 people were killed in a confrontation between rival criminal gangs in Mexico's southern state of Guerrero, President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said. Investigation into the incident began on Tuesday and is ongoing, with National Guard troops already at the site, Lopez Obrador told reporters on Wednesday at the National Palace in Mexico City at a daily press conference as quoted by Xinhua news agency report. The President added the authorities will provide more details later on the deadly clash, according to local media.

England cricket team skipper Ben Stokes was taken aback by the pitch for the fourth Test match against India in Ranchi and said that he has "never seen anything like that before". The match starting Friday is a must-win for the visitors if they want to clinch the series as they currently trail 1-2 in the five-match series. In a recent interview, Stokes said that he found the appearance of the pitch in Ranchi quite deceptive as he felt it has a proper grass cover from a distance but on a closer inspection, the all-rounder found that there were several visible cracks and can be challenging for both the batting and bowling sides.

New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has received a seventh summons from the Enforcement Directorate (ED), officials told NDTV this morning. Mr Kejriwal has been asked to appear on February 26 for questioning in connection with the Delhi liquor excise policy case. On Monday, he did not appear for questioning with his party Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) terming the summons as "illegal" and asserting that the matter is now before the court. The probe agency had earlier this month approached a city court after Mr Kejriwal skipped its multiple summonses related to the case.

"E arlier als o we were ready for discussions, still we are ready and in the future also we will be ready. We don't have any problem, they are our 'Annadatas'...," he said.

The Union minister said that despite the increase in the prices of fertilizers across the world, the Centre has prevented the rise in fertilizer and urea costs, and the government provided subsidies amounting to Rs 3 lakh crore. He also said that the Centre worked continuously in the last three years and brought Nano Urea. The minister said, "I want to tell you that in the 10 years of UPA, Rs 5.50 lakh crore were spent on MSP for wheat, paddy, and oilseeds. The Modi government has allocated Rs 18 lakh 39 thousand crore, which is more than 3.50 times," AnuragThakur said.

HiIndia Newsdesk

London: (IANS) Members of the Sikh community in the UK have slammed the University of Birmingham for confusing them with Muslims in a social media post, saying that "these mistakes should not happen in 2024". The University deleted and apologised for the post incorrectly claiming that a recent 'langar (community meal)' event hosted by its Sikh students was part of an Islamic awareness week, The Birmingham Mail newspaper reported on Monday. Students within the university's Sikh Society hosted the event earlier this month, serving free vegetarian meals on the campus. But they were left disappointed when a staff member tagged their event in a post with the text 'Discover Islam Week', which is an annual awareness campaign run by the university's Islamic Society. "It is disappointing... There is clearly an issue with the training and education given to the staff," Jasveer Singh, a member of Sikh Press Association, told the newspaper. Singh said that aspects of Sikhism are taught at the University, which has lecturers from the community and regularly hosts Sikh events.

Streaming entertainment firms like Netflix, animated TV and film producers, and the computer games industry are all demanding more. "The VFX industry has surged due to an infusion of visual effects in almost all the entertainment sector," says Namit Malhotra, founder of Prime Focus, a giant Indian media firm which owns DNEG. India is a relatively cheap place to create such artwork and the adoption of cloud computing has made it easy for Indian workers to contribute to projects based overseas. "India has become a big market for outsourcing though not the entire movie - but parts of movies," says Ketan Mehta, founder of Cosmos Maya, a visual effects and animation studio. He says it's "only a matter of time" before Indian studios are handling all the visual effects for big global productions. But being plugged into the global market has its downside. India could not dodge the effects of the strikes in Hollywood, which shut down TV and film production for months last year. "The strike in Hollywood had a big impact on the Indian market. We could clearly see the ripple effects. There were layoffs and production houses downsized. A number of projects have got delayed and still the market is extremely slow with the

At the moment around 250,000 people work in the VFX and animation industry, according to the Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming and Comic (AVGC) Task Force. But it estimates that by 2032 that number will have ballooned to 2.2 million. To help supply those workers,

the AVGC is working with universities and colleges to come up with courses and qualifications. Ashish Kulkarni, a member of the AVGC Task Force, would like to see senior members of the industry get involved in education. "The child who has taken up this course should be motivated by well know people in the industry, so VFX and animation becomes popular, and parents are not reluctant to let children pick this field," he says.

But when Mr Cheeks presented his ticket to the Office of Lottery and Gaming (OLG), his claim was denied. Tear Gas Used At Punjab-Haryana Border, Centre Calls Farmers For Talks Again HiIndia Newsdesk

Protesting farmers and the government met in Chandigarh Sunday evening for a fourth round of talks, from which the five-year, A2+FL+ 50 per cent contract offer emerged.

Rahul Gandhi to deliver 2 lectures at Cambridge University

New Delhi: Tear gas shells were fired this morning at the Punjab-Haryana border, where thousands of farmers have gathered to march on a heavily fortified Delhi after rejecting the government's offer of a five-year MSP contract. A fifth round of talks is likely. Farmer groups have formed a human chain at the Shambhu border crossing. Dramatic visuals from the area show the two sides lined up against the other - on one side is an army of heavy earth-moving machines, or JCBs, and tractors, and on the other are the security forces, including paramilitary personnel with riot gear and equipment. Haryana Police have already fired one round of tear gas, and have warned the farmers - who number around 10,000 with 1,200 tractors/trolleys - to stand down. The farmers, a police statement said, are also "arming youth with sticks, stones, face masks (to protect against the tear gas) and iron shields to attack" security personnel.

The state's police force has also ramped up measures to stop farmers from reaching Delhi, which is around 200 km from Shambhu. This includes blocking highways with multiple layers of concrete barriers, barbed wire fences, and even nail strips, to stop tractors. The farmers, though, appear undaunted and, in a moment of innovation, constructed a makeshift 'tank' Tuesday evening - a JCB machine on a tractor with the driver/operator cabins covered with iron sheets as protection from tear gas shells and rubber pellets. AINMENT Arjun Rampal, who will be seen in the upcoming film Crakk, gets candid about how he underwent a rigorous regime to look ripped as the antagonist who locks horns with Vidyut Jammwal

A

ctor Arjun Rampal, who has left generations quaking with his undisputable thirst-trapping appearance in films, is back to ‘Crakk’ the big screen. Armed with a chiselled jawline, ripped physique, and a basso profondo voice, he has been packaged and delivered perfectly to lock horns with the athletic Vidyut Jammwal. In a candid tête-à-tête with mid-day.com Arjun sheds light on how he prepped for the film, having his partner Gabriella Demetriades turn costume designer for the same, and more. Over the years, Arjun has pulled off some of the most versatile roles with ease. He possesses the art of shape-shifting into a given character. Be it Mukesh "Mike" Mehra in `Om Shanti Om`, Joseph "Joe" Mascarenhas in `Rock On!!` or Arun Gawli in `Daddy`, one simply cannot ignore his charisma on the screen. When asked if he puts a conscious effort to stay fit to garner better roles and avoid any barriers in terms of playing a character after a certain age, Arjun says that being in good health is a part of his lifestyle. He

all,” the actor said. Sharing a word of wisdom for filmmakers the Gehraiyaan actor also said that the only hope for Hindi cinema to gain its lost glory is if filmmakers stop seeing it as a means of making money. Pointing out that there is no solution if people keep watching these kinds of movies, he advised ‘serious filmmakers’ to responsibly show today’s reality in a way that they don’t get in trouble with ED or have any fatwas coming their way. “There is hope for Hindi cinema only if we stop seeing them as a means to make money. But I feel it’s too late now. There is no solution any more because the films that are being watched by thousands will keep being produced and people will keep watching them, God knows till when. So those who want to make serious films, it’s their responsibility to show today’s reality and in such a way that they don’t get a fatwa, or the ED doesn’t come knocking on their doors,” Shah said.

explains, “I don`t think I need to have a six-pack or an eight-pack all the time. I have good habits, and they outweigh the bad habits. You tip the scales in your favour for longevity, fitness, mental peace, morale, and confidence. For example, if I have to get really fat for a role, and put on a lot of weight, I would love to do it. But I would also be confident enough because of my knowledge of how I could lose that weight and come back. Because I like myself at a certain weight, it makes me comfortable with myself, I`m not doing it for anything else.” In ‘Crakk’, Arjun essays the role of a ruthless antagonist, who goes head-to-head with Vidyut Jammwal. Going by the film’s trailer, Arjun seems to have pulled off the stunts and high-octane action sequences with ease, but the actor maintains that the outcome doesn’t happen overnight. He states, “It takes work, because Vidyut is a phenomenal actor, and a professional athlete, for me to look like one I had to prepare myself physically in that manner to get to that level. With any film that you do, depending on the requirement, it is the job of the actor to go and prepare. There are a lot of sacrifices that need to be made. For me, it was paramount to spend time on agility, strength training, and a tremendous amount of cardiovascular.” Arjun’s ladylove Gabriella Demetriades has collaborated on this film as well by turning costume designer. On how she agreed to do the project, Arjun says, “When this part came to me, I wanted the guy to be very edgy, quirky, and different, be stylish but not like the clothes screaming out at you. I asked Gabriella ‘What do you think,’ Her first answer was not ‘Yeah I`d love to style you.’ She said, ‘I`d like to read the script.’ I was like wow that`s great. She read the script and said, ‘I know exactly what I`m going to do with you`.’ That really helped me. I think she did a spectacular job. And everybody was so impressed with her. I feel really proud that she did it. I didn`t want to be that guy who is saying take my wife or take my partner to do in this film for me. It just kind of makes me cringe when something like that would happen if I was a producer.” Arjun by all means is a family man, and just like any other fatherdaughter duo, his girls Mahikaa and Myra don’t shy away from opining on his work. He shares, “None of them made the choice for me (laughs). If they revisit some of my old films,

Indians to wait over 100 years for a Green Card: New Study

Zofeen Maqsood

A new study suggests that Indians would have to wait more than a century for a green card. The new study released by think tank Cato Institute says that the employmentbased green card backlog has grown to 1.8 million as of March 2023 — up from about 1.2 million in 2018. It also points out that in FY 2024, about 8 percent of pending employment-based applications will be approved for a green card. But most of these green cards will not go to the applicants who have waited the longest, says David J. Bier, Associate Director, Immigration Studies at the Cato Institute. Bier writes in a paper that “Indians — who make up half the applicants in the employersponsored categories —must wait more than a century for a green card.” He adds, “Congress should see these green card applicants as a historic opportunity to unleash the economic potential of immigrants.”

Only 3% to Get Green Cards in 2024, US Immigration Laws Under Scrutiny: Study HiIndia Newsdesk

A recent white paper from the Cato Institute has highlighted the significant challenges posed by the green card backlog in the United States, calling for a comprehensive overhaul of the system. The study reveals that only 3% of applicants are expected to obtain permanent residence in the fiscal year 2024, with the backlog swelling to approximately 34.7 million applications. The paper attributes this backlog primarily to restrictions on the number and categories of eligible immigrants, leading to a substantial accumulation of pending requests. Particularly concerning is the Employment-Based category, where only 8% or 1.8 million applicants are projected to attain citizenship. Despite temporary increases in the cap, demand consistently surpasses supply, resulting in lengthy wait times, notably for Indian applicants facing delays exceeding a century. To address this critical issue, the white paper advocates for several measures. It calls on Congress to eliminate restrictive rules and caps hindering green card approvals, proposing a gradual increase in annual legal immigration. Additionally, it emphasizes the need for a fairer distribution of green cards across different categories.

Despite temporary increases in the cap, demand consistently surpasses supply, resulting in lengthy wait times, notably for Indian applicants facing delays exceeding a century. The family-sponsored backlog, dating back to 1990, poses a significant challenge, with approximately seven million pending cases. The paper suggests a proportional increase in caps, potentially resolving 85% of the backlog by issuing six million additional green cards. Furthermore, the paper proposes

granting green cards to the 35 million applicants in 2024 and permanently increasing legal immigration to 5 million annually. This reform is expected to moderately increase the US immigrant population to around 40 million by 2033. The findings underscore the urgent need for comprehensive immigration reform in the United States, particularly highlighting the plight of Indian immigrants. As the debate on immigration reform continues, stakeholders and policymakers are urged to prioritize both human and economic considerations to establish a more efficient and inclusive immigration system.

HEALTH

Why light weights can help build and tone your muscles even better Try three times a week weight training with three times a week yoga, says holistic health expert Dr Mickey Mehta For long, many fitness enthusiasts have felt that lifting heavy weights is the only way to build muscle and strength. But lifting lighter weights, and increasing the repetitions, can be just as effective, according to new evidence. So if you were doing five to 12 lifts with heavier weights, you can build endurance with 30 lifts and lighter weights. Besides increasing strength, light weights also tone your body.

HOW TO PRACTISE YOUR LIGHT WEIGHTS ROUTINE?

The methodology is simple. Breathe in during the relaxing part of the lift and breathe out in the contracting part. The movements should be super slow and a whole range of motion should be established. So how do you decide how light the weights you intend to lift should be? There’s a measure called a one-rep max (1RM), which refers to the maximum amount of weight you can lift for one repetition of a given exercise. This implies that you should aim for weights between 30 and 50 per cent of the

weight that you would lift for one repetition. This also depends on which method you are using to lift weights. For example, the squat uses bigger muscle groups than the overhead press. What seems light for a squat will probably feel heavy for an overhead press. 1) At home, dumbbells are good. Start with a weight that you can lift at least 10 to 15 times. Then raise the number of your repetitions. 2) Once you have adjusted to the weights and can lift them easily, you may increase the weight by five per cent. 3) Always rest between sets, take a minute. 4) Do not cross 45 minutes, that would lead to muscle fatigue and burnout. 5) Stretch yourself out after a session.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF LIFTING LIGHT WEIGHTS?

1) It increases muscle endurance, which improves your capacity to maintain contractions for a longer amount of time. 2) Lower weights enable you to concentrate more on form and technique. This focus on accuracy may lower the chance of injuries, enhance general movement patterns and help your joints. 3) Light weights can be easily combined with other body weight exercises or high-intensity interval training (HIIT). 4) For people who are new to strength training, it provides a less daunting starting point. 5) The ease of lifting lighter weights can have a beneficial psychological impact by encouraging motivation and a sense of accomplishment. This might be very motivating for people who are just beginning their fitness adventure.

WHAT SHOULD THE FREQUENCY OF LIGHTWEIGHT TRAINING BE?

Three times a week weight training with three times a week yoga adds maximum benefits of health, muscle build-up, agility, strength, endurance and stamina. For long-term success, as with any fitness regimen, consistency and adherence to individual preferences are paramount. Patience is the key. We don’t have to build bodies; we have to culture bodies.

Are rice, potato, pasta, bread and cookies pushing up your triglycerides? Find out the blood sugar connection

If you have excess carbohydrates — say a combination of rice, wheat chapati, starchy root vegetables like potatoes, breads, pasta, cookies and pastry — day after day, then you might be building up not only excess sugar levels but also triglycerides, a type of fat in your blood. And triglycerides are the reason that people with diabetes have a higher risk of heart attack.

factor for heart attacks and strokes. Triglycerides induce inflammation in the pancreas, leading to pancreatitis, severe abdominal pain and necrosis. Indians are prone to developing hypertriglyceridemia. High triglycerides and LDL can also be indicative of hypothyroidism. Correcting hypothyroidism may reduce triglycerides.

Uncontrolled diabetes is one of the major triggers for higher triglyceride levels. When glucose levels in the blood increase, insulin, the hormone responsible for balancing these out, stores extra glucose as glycogen in the liver. When there is too much glycogen in the liver, the glucose gets converted to fatty acids. These form triglycerides. A high triglyceride count further leads to insulin resistance, which is just a step away from developing Type 2 diabetes. This prevents the insulin from letting our cells absorb glucose. This results in higher than normal blood sugar levels. If you regularly eat more calories than you burn, particularly high-carbohydrate foods, you may have triglycerides. Their persistent high levels cause a condition called hypertriglyceridemia.

Controlling diabetes is the first and most crucial step because not only will it reduce triglycerides, it will get it down to normal. Avoid carbs, stay away from sugar, choose healthy fats, include fatty fish like salmon, olive oil, nuts, seeds and avocados. Exercise daily for at least 30 minutes, lose weight and stay away from alcohol. A single bout of binge-drinking can result in increased triglyceride levels the very next day. In some cases, hypertriglyceridemia can be familial and you may need drugs. Your doctor will then prescribe you a group of medicines called fibrates. The Indian-made drug Saroglitazar significantly reduces triglycerides, LDL cholesterol and increases HDL cholesterol. In addition, it reduces fasting plasma glucose and HBA1c (average blood sugar counts over three months).

HOW DIABETES LEADS TO TRIGLYCERIDES?

HOW TO REDUCE TRIGLYCERIDES

WHY TRIGLYCERIDES POSE A HIGHER CARDIAC RISK FOR PEOPLE WITH DIABETES

Usually high triglycerides are inversely associated with low levels of good cholesterol or high density lipoprotein (HDL). They are also closely linked to increased blood sugar, waist circumference and blood pressure. All these five abnormalities together increase the risk of heart attacks, disease and strokes. But most importantly, high triglyceride levels mean the bad cholesterol or low-density lipoprotein (LDL) in the blood tends to be smaller and denser. This is a big risk
