US economy shines on election eve amid robust consumer spending

The US economy likely maintained a solid pace of growth in the third quarter as subsiding inflation and strong wage gains powered consumer spending ahead of a contentious presidential election set to turn on pocketbook issues.

The Commerce Department’s advance estimate of thirdquarter gross domestic product on Wednesday will be published less than a week before Americans head to the polls on Nov. 5 to choose between Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic Party candidate, and former President Donald Trump. Polls show the race is a toss-up.

The economy has, however, stayed resilient despite 5.25 percentage points of interest rate increases in 2022 and 2023 from the Federal Reserve to tame inflation.

Americans, who list the economy as a top election issue, have chafed at high food and housing costs, even as the economy has defied forecasts of a recession and continues to outperform its global peers.

Surveys of voters have consistently given the edge to Trump when asked who would be a better steward of the economy, including in the latest Reuters/ IPSOS poll out on Tuesday.

The economy has, however, stayed resilient despite 5.25 percentage points of interest rate increases in 2022 and 2023 from the Federal Reserve to tame

inflation.

“It looks like it’s going to be a strong finish right before the election for the U.S. economy,” said Christopher Rupkey, chief economist at FWDBONDS. “There are some cross currents out there, but the economy is certainly better off than it was four years ago, and it shows no signs of slowing down.”

GDP likely increased at a 3.0% annualized rate in the July-September period, matching the April-June quarter’s pace, a Reuters survey of economists showed. Estimates ranged from a 2.0% pace to a 3.5% rate.

The survey was concluded before data on Tuesday showed the goods trade deficit surged to a 2-1/2-year high in September, which prompted the Atlanta Fed to lower its GDP estimate for last quarter to a 2.8% rate from an earlier estimate of 3.3%.

Trump's Election Stunt With Garbage Truck: "In Honour Of Kamala, Biden"

Green Bay:

Donald Trump pulled an election stunt with a garbage truck Wednesday as the White House campaign was forced off-piste by muddled remarks from President Joe Biden about the Republican's supporters that caused a headache for Democratic candidate Kamala Harris.

Harris had hoped to spend the day expanding on the final week "closing argument" she made at a huge Washington rally the night before -but found herself instead disavowing Biden's remark that appeared to label Trump supporters "garbage."

Trump -- who, unlike Harris, has recently called his political opponents "garbage" in public -- was on hand to exploit the misstep with a photo op,

climbing into a garbage truck at an airport in Wisconsin and answering questions from reporters.

The row started over the weekend when a warm-up speaker at a Trump rally called the US territory of Puerto Rico "a floating island of garbage," in remarks that initially put the Republican campaign on the defensive.

"How do you like my garbage truck?

This truck is in honor of Kamala and

Joe Biden," Trump said from the cabin of the vehicle.

"You can't be president if you hate the American people, which I believe they do," Trump added later at his rally in Green Bay, still wearing his highvisibility jacket.

But as Republicans voiced outrage over Biden's remarks, anti-Trump political group The Lincoln Project shared a video from the Republican's September 7 rally in Mosinee, Wisconsin -- verified by AFP -- in which he called "the people that surround" the vice president "garbage."

Trump had just attacked Harris over employment figures before he said: "And it's not her, it's the people that surround her. They're scum. They're scum, and they want to take down our country. They are absolute garbage."

Half Of America Feels Democracy Will Weaken No Matter Who Wins The Election

Washington: There are concerns brewing regarding the fragility of the world's oldest democracy.

American voters are increasingly anxious about the upcoming presidential election, with apprehension about political violence, attempts to overturn election results and the broader implications for democracy.

According to the findings of a poll conducted by The Associated PressNORC Centre for Public Affairs Research, 40% of registered voters say they are "extremely" or "very" concerned about violent attempts to overturn election results. Republican candidate Donald Trump's continued claims of election

Trump's claims of election fraud and forecasting that he can only lose if the election is rigged against him have contributed to these concerns

Top Economist Predicts Trump Victory in US Election

Republican nominee Donald Trump will win the November 5 US presidential elections, renowned economist

Christophe Barraud has predicted.

Known as the “world's most accurate economist,” Mr Barraud's forecast is predicated on various metrics, including financial market signals, which he says indicate a Trump-led “GOP clean sweep” come November 5. “Looking at different metrics such as betting markets, polls, election modellers' forecasts, financial markets, as of now, the most probable outcomes are: Trump victory, GOP clean sweep,” he wrote on X. Mr Barraud, chief economist and strategist at Market Securities Monaco, has topped Bloomberg's economic forecast rankings for 11 of the past 12 years. At 38, he continues to maintain a remarkable track record, giving credence to his latest predictions. According to Mr Barraud, while the GOP will likely take control of the Senate, the House of Representatives could be a closer call, adding it's still leaning in favour of Republicans. In an interview with Business Insider, Mr Barraud suggested that a Trump presidency, combined with Republican control of Congress, could result in a temporary economic boost with GDP growth projected between 2.1 per cent and 2.3 per cent in 2025.

Apple Ships $6 Billion iPhones from India

that the loser of the presidential elections should concede once every state has finished counting votes and legal challenges are resolved. However, only one-third of voters expect that Trump will accept the results and concede.

Having said that, the views held by Democrats and Republicans are very disparate regarding Trump's willingness to concede. About two-thirds of Republican voters think Trump would concede, while only 1 in 10 Democrats agree. Conversely, nearly 8 in 10 voters believe Harris will accept the results and concede if she loses, including a majority of Republican voters. s far as democracy is concerned, Democrats and Republicans are divided regarding their views.

The US company exported nearly $6 billion of Indiamade iPhones, an increase of a third in value terms from a year earlier.

Apple Inc.'s iPhone exports from India jumped by a third in the six months through September, underscoring its push to expand manufacturing in the country and reduce dependence on China. The US company exported nearly $6 billion of India-made iPhones, an increase of a third in value terms from a year earlier, people familiar with the matter said, asking not to be named as the information is private. That puts annual exports on track to surpass the about $10 billion of fiscal 2024.

"Most Difficult Stage": Russia Begins Nuclear Drill

Moscow: Russia's nuclear forces today began a special exercise after orders were received from President Vladimir Putin. The move comes at a critical point in the Ukraine war after senior officials in Moscow termed it the "most difficult phase".

This is the second such military exercise initiated by Putin in a fortnight and the West-led NATO alliance is still unsure of how to deal with the escalating situation. The rise in tensions began after western forces, led by the US were planning to allow Ukraine the use of long-range cruise missiles to target territories deep inside Russia.

China declares success as its youngest astronauts reach space

A Chinese spacecraft with a threeperson crew, including the country's first female space engineer, has docked after a journey of more than six hours.

The crew will use the homegrown space station as a base for six months

to conduct experiments and carry out spacewalks as Beijing gathers experience and intelligence for its eventual mission to put someone on the Moon by 2030.

Beijing declared the launch of Shenzhou 19 a "complete success" - it is one of 100 launches China has planned in a record year of space exploration as it tries to outdo its rival, the United States.

The BBC was given rare access to the Jiuquan Satellite launch centre in Gansu and we were just over a kilometre away when the spacecraft blasted off.

Flames shot out of the rocket launcher as it took to the skies, lighting up the Gobi Desert with a deafening roar.

Hundreds of people lined the streets, waving and cheering the names of the taikonauts, China’s word for astronauts, as they were sent off.

Hezbollah's Naim Qassem Vows to Continue Nasrallah's War Plans

“I start with a verse from the holy Quran which guides us and points out what happened with the Jews throughout history,” said Qassem, according to a translation by Lebanon’s L’Orient Le Jour daily. “The Almighty said they will only inflict harm on you. And if they fight you, they will not be victorious. There will be harm inflicted. Great sacrifices will be made. However, in the end, they will flee, and victory will be for the faithful,” he continued.

“What is my plan? A continuation of my predecessor’s. We will carry on with the war program as it has been outlined so far.”

Qassem also addressed the possibility of a ceasefire. “If the Israelis decide to stop the aggression, we say that we accept, but according to the conditions that we see as suitable,” The Associated Press reported. “We will not beg for a ceasefire as we will continue (fighting)… no matter how long it takes.”

ewadiya, Gujarat: Targeting the Opposition, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said some powers are trying to weaken national unity for the sake of politics and called upon people to identify and fight against this "alliance of urban Naxals". The Prime Minister was speaking on National Unity Day, which coincided with Diwali this time, near Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel's grand statue at Kewadiya in Gujarat.

"Countries are growing apart, but coming close to India. This is not ordinary, a new history is being written. The world is watching how India is resolving its issues. So we have to protect our unity," he said, after paying tributes to Sardar Patel, who played a key role in national integration

after India's Independence in 1947. "Some perverted powers are worried about India's rise. Within India, and outside it, such people are trying to create instability and anarchy. They want the wrong message to go to global investors. These people are targeting the forces, running misinformation campaigns. They are trying to divide (people) in the name of caste. They aim to weaken India's society and unity. They don't want India to be developed because the politics of 'poor India, weak India' suits them. So they are breaking India in the name of the Constitution. We have to identify this alliance of Urban Naxals and fight against them," the Prime Minister said.

Diwali Goes Bigger and Better in America

About two decades ago, when Sujata Kohli first came to the United States, her first Diwali in a Chicago suburb of Wilmette was spent feeling lonely and homesick. She recalls, “None of my neighbors knew anything about Diwali. I wore my Benarasi sari and got strange looks from people on the street, there were hardly any sweet shops I knew of selling mithai and towards evening when I placed a diya on my balcony, I was scared that my neighbors might think that I accidentally lit a fire.” But that was then, within a short span of a few years so much has changed in America that Diwali almost feels like a mainstream festival today. While awareness around Diwali has been on the rise for many years now, especially this year in America, it seems that Diwali has become grander and more unmissable. Diwali -- the festival of lights celebrated by more than one billion people across the world will fall on Thursday, October 31 this year.

Diwali Recognized as an Official Holiday in some states

As the Indian student and workingprofessionals population continues to swell in America, it is obvious that one would find more people celebrating the festival around the country. But as sociologists would tell you, the real marker of if any cultural practice is becoming mainstream is when you begin to see official acceptance. This year, many states across the United States created history by recognizing Diwali as an official holiday. Pennsylvania became the first U.S. state to declare Diwali an official public holiday.

On October 9, 2024, Pennsylvania Senate passed the bill to declare Diwali as an official state holiday. Under a bipartisan bill signed by Governor Josh Shapiro, Diwali according to the new law will be observed annually on the 15th day of Kartik according to Hindu calendar.

One of the most diverse cities in the U.S. – New York City also was not one to be left behind and has in many ways paved the way for other states. Last year, in 2023, New York Governor Kathy Hochul signed legislation so that Diwali would be declared a school holiday for public schools. The news came as a welcome change for families celebrating as the kids no longer would have to miss the school in order to mark the most important Hindu festival on the calendar.

Texas is another state with a sizable Indian population that has announced Diwali as an official public holiday along with New Jersey that too marks the festival in some official capacity.

Major Retailers Mark Diwali

A casual stroll across Costco – the multibillion-dollar global retailer would tell you that Halloween is not the only holiday that is around the corner. Costco welcomed the Diwali prep by including in its warehouses across the country with merchandise especially curated for the festival. So, while until a few years ago, patrons could be seen buying bulk chocolates around Diwali to exchange as gifts amongst family and friends, this year most Costco members reported

seeing at least three different types of Indian mithais – ranging from jalebi to laddoos available around this time of the year. Not just that, if you are planning to host during Diwali there are also specially curated paper plates complete with diyas to light up your festivities some more. At certain warehouses members also were delighted to find diyas being sold. Several new additions for the festival are not exclusive to Costco alone. At Walmart one could find everything from brass diyas to flowers meant for Rangoli. TJ Maxx, another big retailer is seeing things like ethnic table runners, rangolis and lanterns flying off the shelves.

Not just big-box American retail houses but even the desi stores like the famed

Biden Hosts Proud Diwali Celebration

US President Joe Biden hosted a Diwali celebration at the White House on Monday that was attended by more than 600 prominent Indian Americans. In a standing-only packed East Room of the White House, President Biden said, “It means a great deal to me,” emphasizing the key role South Asian Americans have played in his administration. “From Kamala to Dr. Murthy to so many of you here today, I’m proud that I kept my commitment to have an administration that looks like America,” he added.

Patel Brothers that is the go-to for all Indians in the US as their store to shop for masalas and dals has also revamped its Diwali offerings. Even though Diwali had always been a big deal at ethnic stores like Patel Brothers, this year they did the most American thing – introducing Diwali themed tableware. Most Americans are accustomed to bringing out seasonal plates and cups whether it is for a game night or a fall event, so Indians thought why should Diwali be left behind.

Diwali Merchandise

Bigger brands are also noticing the spending power around the festival and are happy to cater to the customers. Mattel Toys launched a Barbie Doll themed around Diwali. The Barbie Diwali doll has been carefully curated complete with a stunning dark blue Indian outfit designed by Indian designer Anita Dongre. Author Chhavi Arya Bhargava came out with a book on Diwali titled, ‘A Kids Book About Diwali.’ Talking about her book, she says, “Diwali has never been bigger or more important in America than right now. To some degree, that made this the perfect moment to write and release a book like mine. From the beginning, we decided we would not solely target the South Asian diaspora with this book. In fact, the editorial and publishing team supporting the book came from a wide range of backgrounds, representing various cultures in addition to South Asian.”

Diwali

at the Games

If you are thinking Diwali is growing only because of the commercial aspect it brings along, then think again, it might also be gently becoming a pop culture phenomenon. This year, The Vancouver Canucks – a professional ice hockey team based in Vancouver, Canada have come up with new sports jerseys depicting a Diwali logo. Designed by Keerat Kaur, the logo features fireworks and peacock designs. According to the designer the blue backdrop represents the night sky, which transitions from turquoise to pink and culminates in a radiant yellow. Other firsts associated with the festival also include, Harris County in Texas becoming the first in the region to officially approve the sale of fireworks for the Diwali holiday season last week. As Hindu Americans get ready to celebrate the festival of lights, most confirm that the occasion seems more joyous seeing their adopted country embracing the festivities head-on.

For more information regarding polling place accessibility, please visit chicagoelections.gov or call 312-269-7976. Need to find your Polling Place? Visit chicagoelections.gov and click on “Your Voter Information.” If you are not yet registered, choose the ‘Address Only’ lookup to find your precinct polling place. If you are already registered, enter your name and address to check your voter registration status, find a sample ballot, locate your polling place and Early Voting locations, and/or check the status of your Vote By Mail request. On Election Night, this website will report unofficial election results for precincts in the City of Chicago.

Ro Khanna's Bill Targets Corporate Landlords, Boosts Affordable Housing

WASHINGTON, DC –Representatives Ro Khanna, Katie Porter, and Mark Takano reintroduced the Stop Wall Street Landlords Act on October 23 to prevent large institutional investors from using taxpayer funds to purchase singlefamily homes. The bill aims to counter rising rent and housing costs driven by investor ownership in states like California, Nevada, and Georgia. The housing market has seen institutional investors acquiring substantial shares—18% of all homes sold in the fourth quarter of this year, including 26% of the most affordable homes. Khanna highlighted that these investors are inflating prices, pushing homeownership out of reach for many Americans. “Homes should belong to people, not corporate landlords,” he said.

Porter, a single mother of three, expressed concern over housing affordability, especially in California, where her constituents struggle with high housing costs. Takano pointed out that corporate landlords are raising prices on essential goods, including housing, exploiting their market power.

The proposed bill would:

• Prohibit tax benefits for large investors, such as mortgage interest and insurance deductions.

"Nearly seven years ago, Mrs. Patel sought assistance from my office in her pursuit of justice for her husband. I have since advocated for her family throughout this process," said Congressman

Panaligan allegedly lured Patel to his law office under an alias. Authorities believe Panaligan arrived in disguise, as captured by nearby security cameras, and committed the murder on-site. Two days later, Panaligan was detained at the Canadian border for suspected firearm smuggling but was eventually allowed to return to the U.S., where Northbrook Police later interviewed him regarding Patel's death.

• Restrict agencies like Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac from supporting single-family home purchases by large investors.

• Introduce a 100% federal real estate transfer tax if properties aren’t sold within 18 months.

Revenue from the tax would fund affordable housing projects. The bill includes exemptions for small landlords, nonprofits, and developers focused on affordable housing, and is backed by advocacy groups like the California Democratic Renters Council and Churches United for Fair Housing.
